Will Smith enters a new phase, learns to ‘quiet the warrior’

LOS ANGELES — Things started to come into focus for Will Smith when “After Earth” bombed. Once the biggest movie star in the world, his $130 million sci-fi spectacle “After Earth” opened in June 2013 to a lousy $27.5 million and would only go on to make up less than half of its production budget, domestically, by the end of its run. For a man who once defined himself by his box office star power, the blow was crushing. “From the time I was in my early 20s, I had this goal that ‘I want to be the biggest movie star in the world,’” said Smith on a recent afternoon at a suburban Four Seasons Hotel, lowering his voice to a faux-macho level when he says the words “movie star.” “And I set out for conquer,” he said. “Smash! Smith, in a self-defined new phase, and Robbie right as she’s about to break out into the mainstream. “The Wolf of Wall Street,” where Robbie caught the attention of a wider audience playing the wife of Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, hadn’t even come out when she was cast in “Focus.” As she remembers it, “Focus” wrapped at 6 a.m. and she was attending the “Wolf” premiere that night. “We couldn’t be more opposite,” said Smith of his co-star, seated next to her in the hotel. “I wasn’t expecting to get along with him as well as we did. We didn’t have anything in common. He’s an ex-rapper. I’m from Australia,” added Robbie. “I, just like everyone, assumed he was really fun and funny. And he is really fun and funny. SINGARAJA - A resident of French nationality named Stephaneimmanuel Leopold Golpar, 66, living at Babakan Kanginan hamlet, Kubutambahan, was reported to Buleleng Police by victim doubling as his wife, Riyanti Br. Pakpahan, 41. The culprit Golpar was alleged to abduct two small children. At the beginning, the culprit took both children to go out. After eight days, they did not go home and their position was unknown. Based on information of the victim Riyanti to police officer, it began from the meeting of culprit Golpar around 12:00 a.m., Saturday (Feb. 14). He asked for permission to take out the children named Shyam Hari Lal Golpar and Soham Golpar. Without elaborating, the victim Riyanti agreed without any suspicion. At that time, the culprit Golpar promised to bring back both children on Sunday (Feb. 22). After waiting, both children did not come home and the victim began to worry. The culprit Golpar once made his time to return home to the victim’s house on Jalan Jalak Putih Singaraja. Unfortunately, both children were asked to wait in the car. Ultimately, the victim could not meet her children. When asked for his confirmation at his office, the Operations Division Head of the Buleleng Police, Michael R Risakotta, said on Tuesday (Feb. 24) to have received the report on the abduction of children. The case involving French citizen was still under investigation by the team of the Buleleng Police Criminal Investigation. “We are still investigating who owns the children. ICU at Tabanan Hospital fully occupied TABANAN - The problem faced by Tabanan Hospital is not only related to restricted beds for general patients resulting in a queue but also the restricted beds in ICU for patients requiring intensive treatment. Although the bed capacity of ICU was initially six, it has been increased to seven beds, but was fully occupied. To overcome this problem, the Tabanan Hospital attempts to stabilize patients in Emergency Room (ER) while waiting for beds in the ICU and referred patients to other hospitals offering ICU services. Director of Tabanan Hospital, Nyoman Susila, explained the fully occupied condition of the ICU room was in harmony with the booming public patients. In general, such condition was also experienced by other hospitals. Surely it needed additional beds to meet the demand in the ICU. However, such addition could not be made due to limited space at the Tabanan Hospital. As solution, the patients were referred to private hospitals providing similar ICU services. “We will train private hospitals that want to provide ICU services. When all have owned it, the

need can be satisfied,” he said. Subdivision Head of Outpatient, Inpatient and ICU Services of Tabanan Hospital, Doddy Setiawan, added that ICU patients required longer treatment than public patients. On average, the patients were treated for 5-7 days depending on the condition and diagnosis. On that account, it was very difficult to determine when the ICU beds would be available and could be occupied by new patient. Currently, added Doddy, almost every day there were patients who required ICU treatment received in Emergency Room. Since the bed was fully occupied, temporarily the Tabanan Hospital took step by stabilizing patients in Emergency Room until the bed was available. Another step taken was by providing integrated treatment so that patient’s condition could rapidly improve and the time of hospitalization in ICU would be shorter. In addition, the Tabanan Hospital also made an observation room at Bougainville Room for postoperative patients. “So, the postoperative patients can be treated in this room,” he said. For patients

who were stable but could not be moved to a regular room, the Tabanan Hospital prepared HCU room with eight beds. Though the ICU capacity had been increased, it remained fully occupied. “When the capacity

has been fully occupied, patients will be referred,” said Doddy. However, to refer patients requiring intensive care should comply with procedures. Hospital becoming the destination of the referral should have an empty bed and

Harris Café serves “Chicken Rice a là Kedewatan”

KUTA - The love of local and international travelers to Balinese cuisines makes many restaurants feature traditional menus as their main menus. One of them is the Harris Café located at Harris Hotel Raya Kuta. The restaurant open to public is now presenting ‘Chicken Rice a là Kedewatan’ created by Executive Chef, Maleachi.

The man familiarly called Chef Male said the adoption of the word ‘Kedewatan’ because it was already known as a favorite area in Ubud to enjoy chicken, especially the betutu (steamed chicken). “We feature chicken rice that tastes exactly like that of Kedewatan. However, we create it in a hotel style,” he said during a presentation in a media gathering. The menu included in the Chef’s Suggestion, said Chef Male, had the basic ingredients of chicken satay, (steamed) chicken betutu, Balinese assorted vegetables, chicken tum, dry fried chicken and boiled egg. The serving was combined with raw condiment, fried shallot, white rice and cerancam chicken soup. There were also additional raw vegetables consisting of tomatoes, cucumbers and cabbage. The menu presented at Harris Café came with the tagline ‘Healthy Lifestyle

Menu’ without MSG which was in line with the healthy lifestyle. Presenting menus with nutritional information was intended to control calories, where the food served was the result of cooperation with a nutritionist based in Indonesia. “Do not worry about the taste because every food has been adapted to local and foreign tongue,” he explained.

Now, chicken betutu is not only offered in Ubud, but has spread to almost all regions of Bali. In general, people usually prepare this menu when organizing a major holiday or ceremony. Seeing the development of tourism, the food can already be found whenever and it has even been appointed as a traditional menu in the diner at restaurant or café. (ocha)

Balinese food suit for foreign tourists Roasted suckling pig cannot only be found in Gianyar. Apparently, at the B’Couple Bar & Grill, Kuta Paradiso Hotel is also available. Its name is Babi Guling by Pa’Tut. Even, it is the only one throughout the region. Uniqueness of the roasted suckling pig of the Pa’Tut lay in the flavor that was not too spicy because it had been adjusted to the flavor of foreign tourists. It is not wrong if the roasted pig offered at the restaurant is excellent and most popular among foreign tourists. Executive Sous Chef, Ketut Wardama, said that his party offered three servings namely the Package Portion, Small Meat Portion and Large Meat Portion. “We offer Package Portion with some icons such as steamed white rice, cassava leaves, Balinese pork sausage, assorted vegetables with grated coconut spice, pork soup and pork crackers,” he explained. He said the roasted suckling pig was made in traditional method to produce tender meat, good taste and crispy pork skin. “The menu we serve on special dish made of rattan called ingko. Then,

a sheet of banana leaf is used as base on the ingko,” he explained. The roasted suckling pig, added Wardama, used complete spice a la B’Couple Bar & Grill. “We process the pork into crackers, mixed with cassava leaves, string bean lawar and Balinese sausage. The presentation is simple where all the icons are arranged in such

a way. Especially for the skin, we nicely pile it up on the menu. Then the soup is served separately,” he said. He said the menu was not only offered to the in-house guests, but also to the public. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Pill taken before, after sex Ngurah Rai Airport may prevent HIV: study installs double-decker air bridge to dock A380

LOS ANGELES - An HIV prevention pill taken by gay men before and after sex reduced the risk of virus transmission by 86 percent, according to the results of a clinical trial released Tuesday. Truvada contains HIV treatment drugs tenofovir and emtricitabine, and is made by Gilead Sciences in California. In the study Truvada was taken up to one day before sex and the two days after. The study, led by the French National HIV research agency ANRS, was presented at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) in Seattle. Until now, Truvada as a preventive measure has been prescribed only as a once-a-day regimen, not one that could be effective if taken around the time of sex. While the latest evidence on the technique known as preexposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, is not enough to change guidelines,

it was welcomed as a novel approach to HIV prevention. The study “provides the first evidence that an event-driven regimen is effective among highrisk MSM (men who have sex with men) with frequent sex,” said Jonathan Mermin, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for HIV/AIDS. Truvada was approved in 2012 by the US Food and Drug Administration as the first daily pill to help prevent human immunodeficiency virus in some high-risk groups. The latest trial, called IPERGAY, was a randomized, placebo-controlled study that began in February 2012 and was halted in October 2014 when an independent data safety review

board found it had a high rate of effectiveness. A total of 400 participants were enrolled. Those in the trial were considered to be at high-risk of acquiring HIV because they were having sex an average of 10 times per month, and with eight partners every two months. Some participants took a placebo, while others took Truvada two to 24 hours before sex, then again 24 and 48 hours later. The research team “reported that PrEP reduced HIV risk among the MSM who were prescribed this regimen by an average of 86 percent,” according to a statement. Previous research on Truvada to prevent HIV has found that those who took it regularly could

lower their risk of getting HIV by as much as 92 percent. Most of the men in the study were taking Truvada four days a week, and it remains to be seen if the regimen would be as effective among men having sex less frequently. Mermin cautioned that it remains unknown whether Truvada taken only in the hours before sex and the two days afterward could work in heterosexual men and women, or injection drug users, or outside a tightly controlled trial. “CDC continues to recommend only daily use of PrEP, as approved by the FDA,” Mermin said. “Daily, oral PrEP is recommended by CDC as an option for men who have sex with men, heterosexual men and women, and injection drug users.” A second study released at CROI by the UK Medical Re-

search Council found that daily oral PrEP using Truvada reduced risk of HIV transmission among gay men by 86 percent. A third study examined the use of a daily pill to prevent HIV among heterosexual couples in which one person is HIV positive and the other is not. Led by the University of Washington, the trial underway in Kenya and Uganda is probing the efficacy of PrEP as a transitional strategy, to protect one partner from HIV while the HIV-positive partner gets his or her viral load under control through antiretroviral medication. “Preliminary results show that this dual strategy reduced the risk of HIV infection by 96 percent,” Mermin said. “These findings together provide encouraging additional evidence of the power of PrEP to reduce the risk of HIV infection.” (afp)

TOKYO - Researchers in Japan say black tea could help treat osteoporosis, a bone condition affecting older people, but admit you need to drink an awful lot of it. Scientists say the humble brew contains an antioxidant that can prevent the loss of bone density commonly seen in old age that makes the elderly more vulnerable to fractures. The news is the latest claim for a drink that is a staple of countries around the world, and one over which never-ending arguments rage about how to brew the perfect cup. Researchers led by Keizo Nishikawa of Osaka University found that theaflavin-3 (TF-3), the antioxidant, works by inhibiting the function of an enzyme called DNA methyltransferase, which destroys bone tissue. The research, published in the online edition of the US journal Nature Medicine on Monday, found that mice suffering from osteoporosis who were given TF-3 showed recovering levels of bone volume, similar to those of healthy mice. But it might be a bit early to rush to put the kettle on -- the research found that a 60 kilogramme (130-pound) adult would have to drink 60 cups of tea over three days to see a noticeable difference, Jiji Press reported. Osteoporosis particularly affects women in later life and is a growing problem in rapidly ageing societies such as Japan. (afp)

KUTA - The Ngurah Rai International Airport has installed a double-decker air bridge in a bid to serve Airbus 380 jets, I Gusti Ngurah Ardita, the airport’s Co-General Manager of Angkasa Pura I, stated Wednesday. “The facility is provided in case the superjumbo plane has to make an emergency landing at the international airport,” he explained. However, the A380 cannot land at the airport due to space constraints. “The width of Ngurah Rai’s runway is 45 meters, while the A380 jet needs a 60-meter-wide runway,” Ngurah Ardita noted. Nevertheless, the airport management will prepare the runway to handle any emergency landing of the A380 aircraft at Ngurah Rai. Meanwhile, the length of the runway,

which is three thousand meters long, is sufficient to accommodate the 600passenger aircraft. According to Ngurah Ardita, the airport management has invested Rp3 trillion, or about US$232.6 million, in 2015 to build domestic and international terminals as well as aprons. In addition, the management, in collaboration with the Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) and Indonesia Port Corporations or Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo), will build access ways to and from the airport for connectivity to the Bali toll road.

A general aviation terminal for chartered flights will also be built and will be the first private jet terminal in Indonesia. Bali targets US$1.7 million form issuing foreign employee hiring permits DENPASAR - The administration of Bali province has set a target to earn IDR22 billion, or about US$1.7 million, in the form of taxes collected through the issuance of foreign employee hiring permits during 2015. “We are optimistic that the target will be realized, and it is proper as the target is in accordance with the number of foreign employees in Bali,” Head of Bali Labor and Transmigration Agency I. Gusti Agung Ngurah Sudarsana stated on Wednesday. According to him, the target was decided based on the assumption that there will be 1.8 thousand foreign employees working in Bali within a period of six months to a year. At the Amlapura Timur market, the price of local super C4 rice reached IDR 12,000 per kilogram with an increase of IDR 3,000 from the previous price. The price increase was alleged to happen due to scarcity of rice in the market. Traders at the Amlapura Timur market began to run out of rice stock due to empty rice stocks in several agent warehouses in Karangasem. On average, grocery traders in the market claimed to start running out of rice stock. Some traders even did not sell rice due to difficulty in obtaining supplies. “I have been looking for rice for two days everywhere but all rice warehouses are empty,” said a grocery trader at Amlapura Timur market, Ni Nyoman Rauh, from Bungaya village, Bebandem. The recent price hike of rice, according to her, was caused by rice stock starting to be empty in agent warehouses. Actually those agents had become the place for traders to take rice. Besides, the price increase was also caused by the price increase in the level of suppliers. Local C4 rice with super quality was sold for IDR 12,000 per kilogram. It increased as much as IDR 3,000 from the previous price at IDR 9,000. Furthermore, the C4 rice of second quality was sold for averagely IDR 11,000 per kilogram. Another grocery trader, Ni Wayan Serinten, from Paye, Subagan, admitted to be difficult to get rice. It happened due to empty rice stock in a number of agents since the past three days. “Now, it is hard to get rice because the agent warehouses have no rice stocks. Today most rice is brought in from Java. We just can get a sack because it must be divided equally,” she explained. Chairman of the Business Development Service (BDS) of Karangasem, I Nyoman Sudarsana, affirmed the scarcity of rice in the market should be immediately responded by the Industry and Trade Agency and the Agriculture Agency. They should intervene so that people would not face starvation as the price of rice was rising up out of reach. “Supposedly the Industry and Trade Agency as well as Agriculture Agency come down to stabilize the price. Of the three areas, a total of 135 holes of floating net cage owned by 10 fish farmer groups were reported to have severe damages. Meanwhile, approximately 150 floating net cages were displaced from its original position, but only suffered minor damages. Reform would let some foreign agents carry guns in Mexico

MEXICO CITY — President Enrique Pena Nieto on Tuesday proposed a reform that would allow some foreign agents to carry arms inside Mexico, a significant change in a country that has historically said the practice would violate its sovereignty. The bill, sent to Mexico’s Senate, would allow foreign customs and migration agents to carry guns in previously established zones. The main beneficiary would be the United States, which shares a long border with Mexico. It would also allow foreign leaders or heads of state to enter the country with armed security details. Mexican law currently prohibits any foreign agent or official from carrying weapons inside the country or participating in operations to arrest criminals. Authorities have always denied media reports of U.S. agents directly taking part in anti-drug trafficking operations inside Mexico.

Permits would be limited to revolvers or semi-automatic pistols with a caliber less than .40 and be granted by Mexico’s national defense department. The initiative would demand reciprocity, implying that the foreign government would also allow Mexican agents to carry guns in its territory. Officials say the presence of foreign agents in Mexico would speed up the joint inspection process and facilitate the flow of goods and people across borders. But they add that the foreign customs and migration agents may need guns to guarantee their security given the countries’ problems with drug and human traffickers. Some analysts think the law, if passed, could open the door to eventually allowing other U.S. security agencies, such as the Drug Enforcement Administration, to send armed agents into Mexico. (ap)

KABUL, Afghanistan — An Afghan official says dozens of people are feared dead in an avalanche that buried some 60 homes in the northeastern Panjshir Valley. Acting Gov. Abdul Rahman Kabiri said at least 30 people were killed and that rescuers were using their bare hands and shovels to try to reach survivors.

Emergency officials could not immediately be reached to confirm the toll, which is expected to rise. Large swathes of Afghanistan have been covered in snow over the past 24 hours as a major storm has interrupted an otherwise mild and dry winter. Avalanches are common in Afghanistan’s mountainous north. (ap)

The captives’ fate was unclear Tuesday, a day after they were seized, and relatives said mobile phone service was cut off and land lines also were not going through, adding to the fear and uncertainty about their loved ones. Heavy fighting was reported in the area. The Islamic State group has a history of killing captives, including foreign journalists, Syrian soldiers and Kurdish militiamen. Most recently, militants in Libya affiliated with the extremist group released a video showing the beheading of 21 Egyptian Christians. The group’s bloody campaign in Syria and Iraq, where it seeks to form a self-styled caliphate, has repeatedly targeted religious minorities since it took control of a third of both countries. The United States and coalition of regional partners are conducting a campaign of airstrikes against the group. The militants struck near the town of Tal Tamr in Hassakeh province, an area predominated by Assyrian Christians. Most of the captives came from Tal Shamiram and some from Tal Hurmiz.

Nuri Kino, the head of a group called A Demand For Action, said between 70 and 100 Assyrians were taken captive. About 3,000 people fled and have sought refuge in the cities of Hassakeh and Qamishli, he said, adding that his activist group based its information on conversations with villagers who fled the attack and their relatives. His group focuses on religious minorities in the Middle East. “Have they been slaughtered? Are they still alive? We’re searching for any news,” said an Assyrian Christian woman from Tal Shamiram who now lives in Beirut. BUSINESS US bank earnings drop 7.3 percent in 4Q WASHINGTON — U.S. banks’ earnings dropped 7.3 percent in the fourth quarter from a year earlier as a few big banks incurred increased costs to settle legal cases and the industry had declines in income from the mortgage business. The data issued Tuesday by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. showed a reversal of the trend of rising earnings as the industry has recovered from the financial crisis. The FDIC reported that U.S. banks earned $36.9 billion in the October-December period, down from $39.8 billion in the final quarter of 2013. Overall, growth in lending helped boost revenues at most banks. But that was outweighed by the big banks’ costs for settling cases related to sales of risky mortgage securities before the crisis and the mortgage income declines, the FDIC said. (ap)

The growth rate was just 2.3 percent in 2014, down from 2.9 percent the previous year and far slower than the three to four percent predicted in last year’s budget speech. Delivering his budget for 201516, finance secretary John Tsang said local industries had been damaged by the protests which began in late September last year and brought parts of the city to a standstill. “Prolonged political bickering is detrimental to public administration and the international image of Hong Kong as a stable, law-abiding and efficient city,” he said. “It may even dampen investors’ confidence in Hong Kong. Such self-inflicted harm does not serve the city well.” Tsang announced one-off measures to support sectors he said had been hit by the protests.

“The Occupy movement affected tourism, hotel, catering, retail and transport industries,” he said, with relief measures including the waiving of licence fees for restaurants, hotels and travel agents as well as waiving administrative fees for taxis and buses. Tsang predicted “even more vehement” disputes in the semiautonomous Chinese city as it grapples with how its next leader should be chosen. Beijing has promised that the public will for the first time be able to vote for the next chief executive in 2017. But it says candidates must be vetted by a loyalist committee. That decision sparked 79 days of street blockades in some areas by pro-democracy protesters. The economy’s disappointing growth was also due to the weak eurozone and Japan’s recession, said Tsang, adding that it was the

third consecutive year that growth had fallen short of the annual average of 3.9 percent expansion over the past decade. The year ahead would be “challenging” with predicted growth of one to three percent as expected US interest rate rises, volatile oil prices and uncertainties in Europe play a part. He announced a raft of measures to boost public spending after slashing it last year, as the government comes under increasing pressure over social inequality -- frustrations which also fuelled last year’s mass rallies. Measures include reductions to salaries tax and rent support for low-income families in public housing. Spanish premier trumpets economy, upgrades growth forecast

MADRID — Spain’s economy will grow by more than previously thought this year, the prime minister said Tuesday, as he laid out the credentials of his conservative government prior to elections later this year. Mariano Rajoy said Spain had moved from the edge of the abyss to being the eurozone country with the highest growth and job creation. He is predicting growth of 2.4 percent, up from the 2 percent prediction. “Nobody expected that three years ago,” said Rajoy. “It’s a nation that has come out of a nightmare. It has saved itself, recovered economic confidence, enjoys prestige and is once again attractive for investors,” Rajoy said at the opening of the annual two-day state-of-the-nation parliamentary debate. But opposition parties accused the prime minister of being triumphalist and out of touch with reality. Socialist party leader Pedro Sanchez said Rajoy had promised 3 million new jobs prior to his election in 2011, but there were fewer people with jobs now. He said that Rajoy’s government was one of cutbacks and that more people were now threatened with poverty. “What do you know about Spaniards? “Sanchez asked rhetorically. He called on Rajoy to “go out onto the street” and see the real Spain.

Despite the growth — Spain also grew 1.4 percent in 2014 — unemployment is still at 23.7 percent. Rajoy on Tuesday promised to create around 500,000 jobs this year, raising to 1 million the number created since taking office in 2011. Spain’s economy began to fall apart in 2008 with the collapse of its bloated real-estate sector. Government spending cuts and tax increases, along with wideranging economic reforms, have helped restore investor confidence and slash the country’s borrowing costs. Rajoy has to call elections by the end of the year. Opinions polls predict his Popular Party will come first, but it won’t win enough to ensure the absolute majority it now has in parliament. The prime minister said one of his administration’s biggest achievements was avoiding a public finances bailout like those for Portugal and Greece. But Spain, with Rajoy in charge, did take a bailout in 2012 to prop up ailing Spanish banks. Rajoy said it was time to compensate Spaniards for their sacrifices, but made no major announcements beyond promises of minor adjustments in social welfare payment discounts for hiring permanent workers, facilities for families to pay debts and a widening of subsidies for single parents. BANGLI - As one of the favorite tourist destinations in Bali, Bangli County retains the diversity of tourism spreading over four subdistricts. Tourism village has now become one of the alternative tourisms starting to draw the interest of travelers, especially foreign travelers. With the basis of potential nature, human resources and local wisdom, each tourism village offers different peculiarities. Unfortunately, among the several tourism villages spreading across the Bangli County, only some few can be categorized to survive. Meanwhile, most of the others fall short to thrive whereas the tourist arrival continues to grow. The Head of Bangli Culture and Tourism Agency, I Wayan Adnyana, said on Wednesday (Feb 11) that so far there were 22 tourism villages in Bangli spreading across the four subdistricts. Among them, only 5 tourist attractions could contribute greatly to the Bangli government, namely Batur, Penglipuran, Kehen, Penulisan and Trunyan village. When the Hindu community in Bali holds a ceremony, they always prepare lawar to be presented to God Almighty as an expression of gratitude. Lately, the lawar is widely on offer in restaurants and even in hotels. Well, Bali becoming a tourist destination of the world encourages its people to be more creative, so that it has an impact on the development of the menus. Such condition is also promoted in Kedonganan tourist area, where the Bali Sea Café serves a squid lawar to its guests. Ingredients used for making the lawar consist of squid, string beans, coconut, kaffir lime leaf, and oil for sautéing. Meanwhile, the seasonings to be prepared are onion, garlic, chili, coriander, nutmeg, aromatic ginger, ginger, galangal, shrimp paste, salt and brown sugar. How to prepare it? First of all, cut the string bean along ½ cm or to taste and boil. Bake the squid and coconut until smelling aromatic. Then, chop the squid and grate the coconut. Slice thinly the shallot, garlic as well as chili and fry. Meanwhile, ground finely or puree the other spices by blender and then fry. Afterward, mix the squid, string beans with the spice paste. DHAKA, Bangladesh — A Bangladesh court issued an arrest warrant Wednesday for exPrime Minister Khaleda Zia in two graft cases after she failed to appear in court for the fourth time. Judge Abu Ahmed Jamadder issued the decision in the nation’s capital, Dhaka, after he refused a bail plea by the defense, which sought more time, saying Zia was sick and concerned over her security because of political unrest. It was not clear immediately whether Zia will soon be arrested. The court order will go to a police station where the cases were registered. “The next measures will be taken by authorities in line with law,” said state counsel Mosharraf Hossain Kajol. The charges involved an alleged illegal fund used to buy land for a charity named after Zia’s late husband, former President Ziaur Rahman. Zia’s lawyers have rejected allegations that Zia illegally collected more than $1 million in donations for the charity, and say the charges are politically motivated, which authorities deny. Early last year, Zia was indicted in the cases, but chaos broke out when she arrived at the court on Jan. 24, when her supporters

attacked police and clashed with ruling party activists. Authorities said the violence was an attempt was to derail the trial process but Zia’s supporters say ruling party activists started the attacks. After that, Zia skipped four court hearings, including Wednesday, citing security concerns and sickness. “Today, we appealed to the court for more time for her appearance as she is sick. But the court rejected that and issued the arrest warrant,” defense lawyer Sanaullah Mia told reporters after the decision. Bangladesh law requires Zia to appear in this court to seek bail to avoid arrest. Zia’s elder son Tarique Rahman, the heir apparent to take over her Bangladesh Nationalist Party in a deeply rooted political dynasty, was also

indicted in the cases. Rahman lives in London. On Wednesday, the court ordered Rahman to appear before the court on March 4, lawyers said. Zia currently leads a 20-party opposition alliance, which has been enforcing a nonstop transportation blockade across the South Asian country since early January to demand the resignation of her arch-rival, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and that a new election be called. About 100 people have died, mostly in firebomb attacks allegedly by Zia’s supporters and hired goons, since the blockade began after a year of relative calm following a general election in January 2014, which was boycotted by Zia’s party. Overfishing driving slavery on Thailand’s seafood boats

SAMUT SAKHON — Urine pools under a bed where an emaciated Burmese man lies wearing only a T-shirt and a diaper. As he struggles to sit up and steady himself, he tears at his thick, dark hair in agitation. He cannot walk and doesn’t remember his family or even his own name. He speaks mostly gibberish in broken Indonesian — a language he learned while working in the country as a slave aboard a Thai fishing boat. Near death from a lack of proper food, he was rescued from a tiny island in Indonesia two months ago. He is just one of countless hidden casualties from the fishing industry in Thailand, the world’s third-largest seafood exporter. A report released Wednesday by the British nonprofit Environmental Justice Foundation said that overfishing and the use of illegal and undocumented trawlers have ravaged Thailand’s marine ecosystems and depleted fish stocks. Boats are now catching about 85 percent less than what they brought in 50 years ago, making it “one of the most overfished regions on the planet,” the report said. Shrinking fisheries in the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea have, in turn, pushed Thai fishing boats farther and farther from home. The group estimates that up to half of all fish labeled a “product of Thailand” is sourced from outside its borders — mainly in Asia, but as far away as Africa. The report, compiled from the group’s own research and the work of others, explains how Thailand’s vast seafood industry is almost wholly dependent on cheap migrant labor. Since few Thais are willing to take the dangerous, low-level jobs that can take them far from home, a sophisticated network of brokers and agents has emerged, regularly recruiting laborers from impoverished neighboring countries such as Myanmar and Cambodia, often through trickery and kidnapping. Men — and sometimes children as young as 13 — are sold onto boats where they typically work 18- to 20-hour days with little food and often only boiled sea water to drink, enduring beatings and sometimes even death at the hands in their captains. Most are paid little or nothing. They can be trapped at sea for months or years at a time; transshipment vessels are routinely used to pick up catches and deliver supplies. (ap)

Residents in Czech town honor 8 killed in shooting

PRAGUE — Hundreds of residents of a small town in southeastern Czech Republic have gathered to honor the victims of the worst shooting attack in the country’s history. Braving rain, they lit candles in front of the Druzba restaurant in Uhersky Brod on Wednesday, a day after the gunman opened fire during lunchtime, killing eight and seriously wounding a woman before he fatally shot himself. Following surgery, the 37-year-old woman, who was shot in the chest, wasn’t in life-threatening condition Wednesday, said Dana Lipovska, spokesman for the hospital in nearby Uherske Hradiste. Police identified the gunman as a 63-year-old local man who had no criminal record and had a gun license. A motive hasn’t yet been determined, but authorities ruled out terrorism. (ap)

INDONESIA State loses up to IDR65.1 trillion due to fake products

JAKARTA - Indonesia loses up to Rp65.1 trillion to distribution of fake products in 2014, according to a study by Indonesian Anti-Forgery Community (MIAP). The loss is up compared to the result of MIAP survey in 2010 that estimated the loss to IDR43.2 trillion, MIAP secretary general Justisiari P Kusumah said on Wednesday. “Nominally the number of forgery cases has risen 1.5 times with the last five years,” she said when presenting the result of a study on the impact of forgery on Indonesia’s economy in 2014. The study carried out in cooperation with the economic faculty of state Universitas Indonesia revealed seven commodities that have often been recorded to suffer the most forgery are software, cosmetics, pharmaceutical products, clothes, leather goods, food and beverages and printer ink. She said forgery of printer ink reached 49.4 percent, clothes 38.90 percent, leather goods 37.20 percent, software products

33.50 percent, cosmetics 12.60 percent, food and beverages 8.50 percent. Justisiari said the forgery of products has caused a loss on the economy especially on tax revenue reaching IDR424,856 million. The loss caused by fake food and beverage products in tax terms was recorded at IDR155,147 million, clothes and leather goods IDR191,993 million, pharmaceutical products and cosmetics IDR42,079 million, software and ink products IDR35,639 million. She said the state also suffered a loss of IDR3,395,887 million due to a loss of employment opportunities. She said the MIAP study involved end consumers and consumers in between sellers and retail traders.

The research, she said, was focused on two consumers namely the ones who bought for personal use and the ones who bought products to be traded. Adjunct Senior Commissioner Rusharyanto from the Sub-Directorate of Industry and Trade of the National Police Headquarters said his side had continued to conduct investigation and education against the use of brands illegally and fake products. “We successfully confiscated fake lubricating oils from shops and automotive shopping centers in various parts in Jakarta recently,” he said. He said the issue of fake products such as fake lubricating oil products was a serious one and had become the police’s focus because it did not only violate the rights of brand owners but also users. Trade ministry steps up efforts to combat rice mafia

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Trade, in cooperation with the Police and Military, is endeavoring to crack down on the rice mafia in a bid to control the fluctuating prices of rice, stated Trade Minister Rachmat Gobel. “We are cooperating with the National Police chief and the Military chief to combat the rice mafia,” Gobel remarked at Jakarta’s State Logistics Agency (Bulog) building on Wednesday. Gobel noted that he will take legal action and revoke the licenses of rice dealers found selling their stocks at inflated prices or involved in illegal stockpiling of rice allocated by the government for the poor. “If they are found hoarding the government’s rice, or raising the prices of rice, we will take the strongest possible action against them,” the trade minister remarked. Gobel revealed that in addition to curbing the rice mafia, the trade ministry will also conduct rice market operations in cooperation with Bulog. “With Bulog, we will continue to conduct rice market operations to control the fluctuating prices,” the minister added. Australia ‘very disappointed’ at Indonesia death row ruling SYDNEY - Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said Wednesday she was “very disappointed” at the failure of the latest bid to spare two Australians on death row in Indonesia, as Jakarta signalled that execution preparations were almost complete. An Indonesian court on Tuesday dismissed a bid by Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan to avoid execution by challenging President Joko Widodo’s rejection of their pleas for clemency. The pair, ringleaders of the socalled “Bali Nine” drug smuggling gang, were arrested for trying to traffic heroin out of Indonesia in 2005 and sentenced to death the following year. Their appeals for presidential clemency, typically the final chance of avoiding the firing squad, were recently rejected by Widodo. “We are very disappointed that the appeal was lost at this point,” Bishop told the Nine Network. “But I understand that the lawyers are considering a further legal avenue and they have about 14 days in which to do so.”

Lawyers for Sukumaran and Chan urged Attorney-General Muhammad Prasetyo to respect the rule of law and not execute the men pending an appeal. “We live in a state based on law and this is part of the legal process,” lawyer Todung Mulya Lubis told reporters. However, Prasetyo said later that preparations for a new round of executions, which would include the Australians, were “about 90 percent” complete and repeated the government’s tough line. “Despite the pressure, we will go ahead... this is about being consistent in enforcing the law and secondly about the sovereignty of the state,” he said, without giving an exact date when the executions would take place. Widodo insisted on Tuesday that foreign nations must not interfere in Indonesia’s right to use the death penalty. MELBOURNE - Veteran Australia midfielder Mark Bresciano has called time on his international career after celebrating the Socceroos’ Asian Cup triumph on home soil last month. The 35year-old, who scored 13 goals in 84 ‘A’ internationals, represented Australia in three consecutive World Cup finals campaigns in 2006, 2010 and last year in Brazil. Classy playmaker Bresciano, a fixture in Italy’s Serie A for a decade, made fewer starting appearances in the gold shirt of Australia in recent years but played important cameo roles to ensure the Socceroos kept their place at the World Cup table. “It is with an element of sadness but a lot of pride that I have decided to retire from the Socceroos,” Bresciano said in a statement on Wednesday. “Playing for my country in the sport I love has been an amazing experience and something I have cherished but never taken for granted.
