New host Seth Meyers lands at NBC’s ‘Late Night’ Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK — The monologue jokes were mostly thin and the host seemed stiff delivering them. But jokes about the Winter Olympics that already felt irrelevant, and a few opening-night butterflies for the guy voicing them, could be excused. Soon enough, Seth Meyers seemed to gain control of his inaugural edition of “Late Night.” Part of his subsequent comfort level had to be explained by his savvy choice of guests. Amy Poehler, his longtime pal and former “Weekend Update” deskmate on “Saturday Night Live” was the first guest of NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers.” His other guest: Vice President Joe Biden, who’s a talk show all by himself. When Biden arrived to join Poehler, it made for a cozy trio. After all, Biden and Poehler have a history of their own, reaching back to his cameo appearance last season on her NBC sitcom “Parks and Recreation.” “Amy really helped

me with the Secret Service,” said Biden, who reported that when he had finished shooting his “Parks and Recreation” scene and was making his departure, the smitten Poehler grabbed a Secret Service agent by the lapels and demanded, “You take care of him!” Poehler joked that she and Biden now plan to make a film together called “Snakes on a Train.” Then she declared that she was running for president in two years. But when Meyers asked Biden what his own 2016 political plans might be, he sidestepped the question. He said he had

meant to make a major announcement on the show, but changed his mind. As he explained to Meyers, “Tonight’s YOUR night. So I hope you’ll invite me back.” The premiere of “Late Night with Seth Meyers” (which taped Monday evening for airing at 12:35 a.m. EST/11:35 p.m. CST), represented the final step in NBC’s talk-show turnover. Meyers, who until early this month was an “SNL” veteran and co-anchor of its “Weekend Update” newscast, is filling the vacancy left by Jimmy Fallon after five years as “Late Night” host. Fallon, of course, moved up last week to be host of “The Tonight Show,” replacing Jay Leno.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

New Samsungs will appeal to fitness fans Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK — Samsung is banking on people shaping up this spring. The company on Monday unveiled its new Galaxy S5 smartphone, which is set to go on sale in April, along with a pair of fitness-themed watches. And many of the features included on the devices focus on fitness. Considering America’s continued fascination with fitness and fitness products, this is probably a good idea. What Samsung has attempted to do is combine the best attributes of the top-of-theline fitness trackers currently on the market with those of its own phones and smartwatches. The S5 and the watches were unveiled at an event at the Mobile World Congress wireless show in Barcelona, Spain. I had a chance to briefly test out all three products in New York on Monday. The S5 includes a built-in heart rate monitor, pedometer and fitness tracker, though I’m not sure how useful they actually are. For instance, to check your heart rate, you hold your finger over a sensor on the back of the phone — something I can’t imagine doing in the middle of a jog. True fitness buffs will probably head straight for Samsung’s Gear Fit smartwatch, which also does all of those things, but in a much

more user-friendly way. Want to check your heart rate? Just open up the app for that and it gives you a reading within seconds. While many people have become accustomed to wearing fitness bands either constantly or for their workouts, I think a lot of them would balk at going running with, or perpetually being tethered to, a phone as big as the S5. It’s worth mentioning too that the Fit Gear is very nicely styled. I have to admit, I wasn’t a fan of Samsung’s first Galaxy Gear smartwatch, because it felt heavy and clunky and was just too big for a normal-sized woman’s wrist. But the Fit solves that problem. It’s thin, light and features a curved color screen. If you don’t mind wearing something like a Fitbit Force or a Nike FuelBand, you won’t mind this product either. The trade-off is you can’t place or answer a call from the Fit, but it will notify you of things like calls, emails and text messages. There’s also no camera. Samsung’s new Gear 2 watch also comes with basic fitness features including the heart rate monitor and pedometer. While it’s still too chunky for me, it is significantly lighter and thinner than the original version. Unlike the Fit, you can still place calls from it and shoot pictures and video from its camera.

BARCELONA, Spain — BlackBerry will release a low-cost phone in Indonesia in April and plans a broader release of a phone that restores a beloved row of control keys with a track pad. The Indonesia phone, the Z3, will sell for less than $200 without subsidies, the company said Tuesday. It will later expand to other markets in southeast Asia. BlackBerry Ltd. CEO John Chen said a version with faster, 4G connectivity is planned for the rest of the world “sometime in the future before I die.” It’s the first phone made under a new five-year partnership with Foxconn, the Taiwanese company that assembles products in vast factories in China. Meanwhile, Chen said it will restore the keys in a new phone he termed “Classic.” He said the new Q20 is a response to lackluster sales of last year’s Q10, which has a physical keyboard but lacks the track pad or keys for functions such as going back. He said the company got many complaints about that. BlackBerry also announced plans to expand its services for businesses needing secure communications, particularly in regulated industries such as health care and financial services. There are plans, for instance, to go beyond securing just email and messaging. It’s part of the company’s plan

to focus on its strengths in business services. BlackBerry Ltd. strayed from that as it tried to lure consumers with new devices. The BlackBerry was the dominant smartphone for on-the-go business people and other consumers before Apple introduced the iPhone in 2007, showing that phones could handle much more than email and calls. BlackBerry was slow in modernizing its operating system, and once it did, the much-hyped system flopped. Chen was brought in as CEO late last year after talks to sell the company collapsed. Although he has been credited with turning around Sybase, a data company that was sold to SAP in 2010, Chen has acknowledged that reviving BlackBerry will be his most “complicated” challenge. The new partnership with Foxconn will help reduce much of BlackBerry’s manufacturing costs. Foxconn, known for its manufacturing contract work on Apple’s iPhones and iPads, will jointly design and manufacture most BlackBerry devices and manage inventory of the devices. Chen said BlackBerry will now target the heavily regulated industries that require greater security. It will simplify its pricing and let people upgrade to the latest systems for free this year. It will also offer free services this year for companies that had left BlackBerry for rivals.

German government to help Ubud resolve congestion Bali Post

GIANYAR - So far, the congestion in Ubud remains to become a problem. At least, this matter kindles the concerns of German government. Through the transportation institute established by German government, it wants to work together with the Customary Village Communication Forum (FKDPU) of Ubud subdistrict to reduce congestion in Ubud. It was revealed in a dinner meeting between the German Institute for Transportation and Gianyar Regent Anak Agung Gde Agung Bharata in the Ubud Grand Palace. Arrival of the entourage was to discuss about the Ubud Traffic Project, denoting an effort to address traffic congestion in the Ubud tourist area. A member getting involved in the group was Kadek Gunarta, doubling as customary village apparatus of Padangtegal, Ubud, and the element of the FKDPU. Meanwhile, the entourage from Germany consisted of Mr. Hans Ulrich Fuhrke, Mr. Devin Maeztri, Graf Nikolaus von Sandizell, Graefin Filipa von Sandizell and the companions like Amir Rabik and Murni Surbakti. In the meeting was revealed that the FKDPU and the German Institute for Transportation with Gianyar government had conducted surveys and feasibility studies related to the Ubud Traffic Project. NEW YORK — Ben Bernanke, who stepped down last month after eight years as chairman of the Federal Reserve, is planning a memoir. Bernanke told The Associated Press on Monday that he will focus not just on the defining moment of his time at the Fed, the 2008 financial crisis, but on the “Great Recession” that followed. “I want people to understand what we knew, when we knew it, how we made decisions and how we dealt with the enormous economic uncertainty,” said Bernanke, who expects to begin meeting with publishers within the next several weeks. Bernanke, 60, says he will cover his entire career at the Fed, starting in 2002, when he joined the Board of Governors. He was appointed chairman in 2006 by President George W. Bush, a Republican, and reappointed four years later by President Barack Obama, a Democrat. A former professor and head of the economics department at Princeton University, Bernanke is currently a fellow at the

Brookings Institution. Few Fed chairmen confronted such profound challenges or became so controversial. Under his leadership, the Fed invoked all its conventional tools to salvage the economy. Once those were exhausted, Bernanke turned to extraordinary steps never before tried by the Fed. Besides cutting a key short-term interest rate to a record low near zero, Bernanke launched a bond buying program that drove the Fed’s balance sheet above $4 trillion to try to accelerate growth and shrink high unemployment. LONDON - Former Ferrari race engineer Rob Smedley is following Brazilian driver Felipe Massa to the Williams Formula One team, where he will take on the new role of head of vehicle performance. Williams said on Tuesday that Smedley, whose radio conversations with Massa during races have made him an F1 personality, would start work before the Bahrain Grand Prix in April. The Briton had been expected to move to Williams after Massa, with whom he had forged a close working relationship, joined the team from Ferrari at the end of 2013. At the German Grand Prix in 2010, it was Smedley who gave Massa the message ‘Fernando is faster than you’ when Ferrari controversially decided to impose ‘team orders’ to ensure Spaniard Fernando Alonso won the race. The order, which has gone down in Formula One lore, was devastating for Massa who had been on course for his first win since 2008 - the year before he suffered a near-fatal head injury - but finished second. Massa’s race engineer this year will be Andrew Murdoch, who worked previously with departed Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado. Williams said Richard Lockwood had also joined the team from Marussia as head of race strategy. Technical head Pat Symonds said the latest appointments reflected the former champions’ determination to move back up the grid after a disappointing 2013 season. The Spanish champion said in a statement it paid the “complimentary” amount to cover any “eventual interpretations that could come out of the contracts signed relating to the transfer of Neymar. Meanwhile we are convinced of the legality of our initial fulfilment relating to our tax obligations.” Barcelona’s actions take the price of Neymar’s transfer to more than 100 million euros ($138 million) after the Catalan club initially said it paid 57.1 million euros ($74 million) for the Brazil forward. That sum does not include bonus payments made by Barcelona or the 22-year-old’s salary, meaning his total cost likely exceeds the record-breaking 100 million euros-plus spent by rival Real Madrid on Gareth Bale last summer. Spanish tax authorities charged Barcelona with fraud on Thursday, alleging it swindled the state of 9.1 million euros ($12.5 million) through payments to varying companies and false contracts. Of the initial transfer fee, Brazilian club Santos received 17.1 million euros ($23 million) while Neymar’s father, who also goes by Neymar, earned 40 million euros ($55 million).
