DUBAI - Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have opened an investigation into a visit by Kim Kardashian to a Dubai government children’s charity this month and suggested it undermined local values, a state-owned newspaper reported. Kardashian concluded a brief stay in the Gulf Arab emirate last weekend, shopping at the sprawling Mall of the Emirates and attending a masterclass there on makeup. However, the Emarat al-Youm newspaper quoted Ministry of Community Development official Wafa bin Suleiman as saying her visit to children at the Rashid Centre for the Disabled was not authorised and “had no goal from which students could benefit”. The ministry is investigating why the centre hosted Kardashian without its authorisation, bin Suleiman said, adding that the ministry would have rejected such a request because approval depends on “full commitment to the customs and traditions of the state”. It was not immediately clear whether all visits to government charities require approval or what element of Kardashian’s visit would have been contrary to custom. A video posted on the Disabled Centre’s Facebook page showed Kardashian, wearing torn jeans and a T-shirt, arriving at the charity greeted by smiling children who performed a folk dance in Emirati robes and headdresses. During the visit she donned a traditional black cloak and necklace as she talked to the adults and children present. The centre, also known as the Rashid Paediatric Therapy Centre, described it as an “amazing day” on its Facebook page. It could not immediately be reached for further comment. (rtr)

Trump moving forward with border wall, weighs refugee cuts

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump will begin rolling out executive actions on immigration Wednesday, beginning with steps to build his proposed wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, according to two administration officials. He’s also expected to target so-called sanctuary cities and is reviewing proposals that would restrict the flow of refugees to the United States. The president is expected to sign the first actions — including the measure to jumpstart construction of the wall — Wednesday during a trip to the Department of Homeland Security. Additional actions will be announced out over the next few days, according to one official.

Trump is said to still be weighing the details of plans to restrict refugees coming to the U.S. The current proposal includes at least a four-month halt on all refugee admissions, as well as temporary ban on people coming from some Muslim majority countries, according to a representa-

tive of a public policy organization that monitors refugee issues. The person was briefed on the details of that proposed action by a government official and outlined the expected steps for The Associated Press. The officials and the public policy organization’s representative insisted on anonymity in order to outline the plans ahead of Trump’s official announcements. On his personal Twitter account Tuesday night, Trump tweeted: “Big day planned on NATIONAL SECURITY tomorrow. Among many other things, we will build the wall!”

Trump campaigned on pledges to tighten U.S. immigration policies, including strengthening border security and stemming the flow of refugees. He also called for halting entry to the U.S. from Muslim countries, but later shifted the policy to a focus on what he called “extreme vetting” for those coming from countries with terrorism ties. While the specific of Trump’s orders were unclear, both administration officials said Wednesday’s actions would focus in part on the president’s plans to construct a wall along the southern border with Mexico. 30 traditional markets to be assessed

Go digital, tourism strategy in 2017 TOURISM of Indonesia and Bali in particular face many challenges in 2016 starting from security threats to natural disaster. However behind the challenges, the hard work of the entire tourism components remains to bear sweet fruit. It can be seen from domestic and foreign tourist visit having been on target, even before the yearend of 2016. “Up to November, according to the data of BPS, we’ve got 10.5 million foreign tourists. For Bali, the story is more exciting where the target of 4.5 million in 2016 was already achieved in November 2016,” said Deputy Foreign Tourism Marketing Development, Ministry of Tourism, I Gde Pitana, in an exclusive interview with Indonesia Network, BaliTV and Bali Post in Jakarta, recently. Pitana added that movement of domestic tourists is more remarkable. This is related to economic growth, ease of accessibility, lowcost carrier (LCC) as well as the security condition that is getting better. In 2016, the movement of domestic tourist reached 262 million in Indonesia. This achievement makes his ministry increasingly challenged in 2017. “2017 is a challenging year for us. Nevertheless, we’ve been getting around this with a variety of strategies including the new ones. The first strategy is utilizing the advances in information technology better known as ‘go digital movement,’” he added. According to Pitana, go digital means a variety of activities both tourism promotions, marketing as

well as the form of sales carried out with the approaches through digital platform. For instance, it can be carried out by making cooperation with various search engines in the world. Then, make collaboration with the platforms having become aggregators gathering those that will be traveling such as sea trips and working with Online Travel Agencies (OTA). “Well, there are various activities we do. As a marketer, his ministry must follow consumers because “who wins consumers, wins the game.” Data of the ministry of tourism showed that more than 75 percent of travelers plan their trips through digital media. Thus, going digital is a must. “Starting from the search where to go has been filled with digital

promotions. Then, when planning to select, they will also contact digital travel agencies. Then, when looking for airline ticket, for example, they book digitally, or through online. When arriving at the destination, where to eat in Bali, they will check via online first, and so on,” he explained. Nevertheless, added Pitana, tourism is an industry that is not only high-tech but also high touch in need of smiling and greeting. Here, the concept is online goes off-line. The off-line activities undertaken including the participation in overseas travel market like the ITB in Berlin, WTM in London, JATA in Japan, ATM in Arab and so on. His ministry also invites the industry to make direct sales overseas in what the so-called sales mission. “As information for Bali, for instance, on February 17 we’ll invite or cooperate with the BPPD Badung to perform sales mission to two cities in Australia. Then, in March we work together with the BPPD for sales mission to India. And so on, there are a lot of off-line efforts we do in addition to going digital today,” he concluded. (kmb32)

DENPASAR — Traditional markets managed by villages and PD Pasar Denpasar will be subject to assessment in the Village Market Festival. The assessment team of Denpasar under coordination of the community and people empowerment (DPMD) Denpasar has been ready to do the assessment to 30 village markets and the markets managed by the PD Pasar Denpasar. Several aspects of the assessment started to be finalized on Tuesday (Jan. 24) in the meeting involving the Organizations of Regional Agency (OPD) of Denpasar and the Food and Drug Control Agency (BPOM) Denpasar. In addition to assessing the aspect of culture, security, order, comfort, sanitation, beauty, health, sanitation, environment of market infrastructure, governance aspects of the market and market performance, it also puts emphasis on the distribution of food and snacks containing hazardous substances such as Rhodamine B and Metanil Yellow. “We finalize again the assessment criteria of Market Festival this time with the input of the BPOM Denpasar that agreed to jointly increase vigilance in responding to distribution of food containing hazardous substances,” said the Head of People and Village Empowerment, Ni Made Puspita Sari, after the meeting last Tuesday. Further, she emphasized the importance of discussion on the assessment criteria to unify the perspective in the direction for the arrangement of traditional markets together with the Denpasar Industry, Trade and Creative Economy Agency in accordance with the commitment of Denpasar Mayor I.B. Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra in the sustainability program for revitalization of traditional markets. Content of forbidden and hazardous ingredients such as Rhodamine B in food can be disseminated together to realize a healthy traditional market. The assessment will be held on Monday (Jan. 30) to Friday (Feb. 3) by targeting five markets in each assessment. “Aspects of assessment are the same as in the previous years and it struggles for the first to third winner and three consolation winners that will be handed over in the celebration of the 229th anniversary of Denpasar city,” she said Representative of BPOM Denpasar, Ery Bahari, said that almost the entire markets have been revitalized by the Denpasar municipality so that in this assessment it is required to increase the supervision against the foods using hazardous substances. Fresh snacks and other food sold in the market become one of the references in the assessments with shared commitment to improving the existence of traditional markets and maintaining public health. Although the BPOM has regularly carried out supervision by using roving vehicle, the assessment is expected to be enhanced in the matter of supervision and collective synergy that will educate merchants and management whose efforts can be seen at the end of the assessment. Many middle-aged workers face job problems due to physical frailty LONDON - Nearly a third of middle-aged workers suffer from some level of frailty, including fatigue, issues with walking and other physical limitations that make them less able to hold a job, according to a UK study. Frailty is more often something considered when treating elderly patients, but middle-aged patients may face some of the same symptoms, the study team writes in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Physical frailty leaves many people out of work entirely, while others take a lot of days off or struggle with physical demands, especially in manual labor jobs, the research team writes. “Lots of factors are encouraging people to work longer, but this may not be feasible for those with major health problems and, depending on circumstances, might be either good or bad for health,” lead author Keith Palmer of the University of Southampton told Reuters Health by email. To examine the link between frailty and employment, researchers recruited more than 8,000 people in their 50s and early 60s from 24 English general practices. The participants completed questionnaires about their work, health and home circumstances. In particular, the respondents answered ques-

tions about five measures of frailty. These included unintentional weight loss of more than 10 pounds over the past year, physical exhaustion during the past week and slow walking speed or inability to walk. The measures also included physical activity levels - whether respondents worked up a sweat during exercise in an average week - and weakness of grip, assessed by the ability to open jars. Overall, the researchers classified 4 percent of participants as frail, based on having three to five of the frailty symptoms, while nearly a third of participants were considered “pre-frail” because they reported one or two of the frailty symptoms. Frailty was tied to a large impact on employment. Three-quarters of frail people were not working at all and 60 percent had left their last job on health grounds. Compared with non-frail people, frail people were 30 times more likely to lose their jobs. Frail people were nearly 11 times more likely to have been out of work on prolonged sick leave in the

Healthy babies don’t need apps to monitor vital signs

PHILADELPHIA - Smartphone applications paired with sensors to monitor babies’ vital signs may appeal to parents anxious to make sure infants sleep safely through the night, but there’s no medical evidence proving these products work, a new paper suggests. These apps linked to sensors in babies’ socks, onesies, leg bands and diaper clips are marketed as tools to help parents keep tabs on things like breathing, pulse rate and oxygen levels in the blood and sound alarms when infants are in distress. But they aren’t tested or approved for U.S. sale like medical devices and there’s little evidence to suggest these monitors are safe or effective, said Dr. Christopher Bonafide, lead author of the opinion piece in JAMA. “I’ve been there myself, peeking in the door of my son’s room late at night, making sure I could hear him breathing,” Bonafide, a pediatrics researcher at the University of Pennsylvania and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, said by

But it still remains a leading cause of infant mortality, killing about 3,500 babies a year in the U.S. alone, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). The AAP advises parents not to use monitors like the ones paired with smartphone apps for home use because there’s no evidence this reduces the risk of SIDS. Instead, parents should rely on prevention efforts proven to work, like breastfeeding and sleeping in the same room with their babies, the AAP recommends. Ideally, babies should sleep in the same bedroom as their parents but not in the same bed - for at least six months to minimize the risk of sleep-related deaths. Development of foreigners stealing ATM data

Marijuana seized at their villa MANGUPURA - After being arrested related to the allegation of BNI ATM data theft at Canggu Mart, Echo Beach, Canggu, two foreigners from Turkey with the initials EG and AOA were taken to their villa. They stay at Surya Villa Gazebo on Jalan Yasa Bali Sujati, Dalung, North Kuta. “In the room of the perpetrator (AOA—Ed) is found suspected marijuana. The evidence is quite a lot,” said a source at Badung Police on Tuesday (Jan. 24). The source emphasized that the officers were initially only focusing on the development of the ATM data theft case. It is unthinkable if they are also involved in drug case. Furthermore, the search was carried out in their room. Police were surprised to find out two packets of suspected marijuana. Suspect AOA admitted that it belongs to his possession. “In addition to theft case, they are also involved in drug case. Whether they also just users or dealers, it is being explored by the officers,” said the source asking for anonymity. Chief of North Kuta Police Criminal Investigation, Putu Ika Prabawa, said that his institution was still checking the authenticity of the marijuana. Currently, marijuana samples have been taken to forensic laboratory. “It is still being developed. When it has finished, we will surely release it,” he said. Earlier, personnel of the North Kuta Police arrested Turkish citizens with the initials EG, 47, and AOA, 36, on Sunday (Jan. 22). Both suspects were alleged to have stolen ATM data at Canggu Mart, Echo Beach, on Jalan Batu Mejan, Canggu. Disclosure of this case began when the officers of Swadarma Sarana Informatika (SSI) monitored if the BNI ATM at the scene was off. Subsequently, on Sunday at 0:56, two SSI officers checked directly to the scene. Other than the ATM machine was off, trellis where to put modem on the ATM was already cut off, and the padlock was missing. Having been observed, it was found a white object similar to disk drive to copy data installed there. At 3:00, two suspects came in. Hundreds of false ecstasy secured on toll road

DENPASAR - Having been explored and examined by forensic laboratory, in fact, the 172 pills carried by Hariono and Edin Santana are false. However, the investigators of Bali Police Narcotic Investigation are still probing the origin of the goods. Allegedly, the false ecstasy was about to be circulated in South Badung. “In fact, the pill is named trihexyphenidyl and not included in the Law on Psychotropic and Narcotics,” said the Spokesman of Bali Police, Hengky Widjaja, on Tuesday (Jan. 24). Having been arrested by personnel of Bali Police Traffic Affairs, Hengky stressed out that the case has been handed over to the Directorate of Narcotic Investigation for further probes. The evidence was taken to National Police Headquarters Forensic Laboratory of Denpasar Branch located at Padangsambian. As a result, hundreds of the pills are medication for anxiety and mental disorders. “The pills are to cure Parkinson’s disease or neurological disorders. They are also commonly used to treat psychiatric disorders, emotional and anxiety,” he said. Hengky said that both project workers are still undergoing investigation and after that they are going to be released. “If there is no evidence, they will be released. Currently, the origin of the pills is being traced,” he said. Italy avalanche death toll rises to 23, six people still missing FARINDOLA - Rescuers workers have pulled five more bodies from the wreck of a hotel in central Italy that was razed by an avalanche one week ago, bringing the death toll to 23, the national fire brigade said on Wednesday. Three bodies were retrieved from the site overnight and a further two corpses were found during the morning. Six people are still missing. Eleven guests and workers at the Hotel Rigopiano survived the disaster. The last of them were pulled from the submerged ruins of the luxury spa early on Saturday, and hopes of finding anyone else alive are fading. Prosecutors in nearby Pescara have opened an investigation into the Jan. 18 avalanche in the Gran Sasso national park, which came after heavy snow storms and a flurry of powerful earthquakes. No deadline in search for missing Indonesian navy soldiers SURABAYA - Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Ade Supandi said the search for four soldiers who went missing, while they were guarding a seized Philippineflagged boat, would continue with no deadline until they were found. “The search effort would continue until they are found and with no deadline,” Ade said after a meeting with East Java Governor Soekarwo here on Tuesday. Since they were reported missing on December 14 last year, the whereabouts of the four member of the Indonesian Navy remained a mystery. As many as 12 navy ships were deployed to help the search and rescue team find the soldiers during the past 3 to 4 weeks, Ade stated, adding that there was no sign on where they were. However, the Navy would continue its coordination with the Philippines in the search operation. The Indonesian Navy would also intensify its search operation on land, and work in cooperation with related institutions. “There is a possibility that those personnel are already landing. We will make sure that search effort will continue until they are found,” he remarked. The men who were reported missing were identified as Second Lt. Faisal Dwi AR, Second Sgt. Mes Rizky Dwi Deptianto, Chief Seaman Amo Dian Mahendra and Second Seaman Isy Badnur Rohim. They went missing while they were guarding a seized Philippine-flagged boat “Nurhana” that had allegedly been fishing illegally in Talaud waters of North Sulawesi on December 13. TOKYO - Japan rejoiced on Wednesday as sumo wrestler Kisenosato became the first Japanese born and bred grand champion in nearly two decades, ending foreignborn wrestlers’ domination of the ancient sport’s top rank. Sumo, which features giant wrestlers clad only in loincloths, has seen such an influx of foreign grapplers over the last 50 years that prior to this week all three grand champions - known as yokozuna - were Mongolian. Hawaiian-born Americans have also held the rank. Until January 2016 a homegrown rikishi, as the wrestlers are known, hadn’t even won a tournament championship for a decade. But all this changed on Wednesday, when 30-year-old Kisenosato was promoted to yokozuna, becoming the first native Japanese to attain the sport’s most exalted rank since 1998. “I will do everything in my power and try not to bring shame to the name yokozuna,” said Kisenosato, wearing a formal kimono and bowing deeply during a ceremony where he accepted the promotion from ozeki, sumo’s second-highest rank. “I want to become even more focused,” he said after the ceremony. “I have grown as a person and want to be a yokozuna that is respected.” Standing 1.87 metre (almost

Although no official details of his new contract were revealed, media reports said the 24-year-old signed a five-and-a-half year extension that will keep him at Liverpool until 2022 and make him the club’s highest-paid player. “I will work much harder to repay the belief shown in me.
