It was then found out accused did not have the authority letter from Umar Santosa to sell the land and the certificate is still on Santosa, “In the agreement letter, it is stated if in 24 months no land is given, so money will be reimbursed.” For that it is no longer clear where the land is anymore, moreover the money as accused never gave it back. Felt being tricked, victim then reported the case to Badung Police. Sanglah Hospital Radiotherapy Services that’s always crowded by visitors seemed empty this week as the radiotherapy vital equipments have been broken since November and now can’t be used. 150 tumor/cancer patients now have to wait until it can be functional again. Met at Sanglah Hospital last Monday (24/ 1), Head of Radiology Department, dr. Nyoman Margiana, SpRad, confirmed the situation. It is said it started with the equipment that arranges the in and out source of the radiation light is not functioning, “This in and out source equipment is very vital in arranging the radiation light which is directed to the patient’s tumor area. If this is broken it could be dangerous not only for patients but those around it too.” After that, the ranger lamp that exacts the place to radiate also the TPS which arranges the dose did not function well. Sanglah Hospital then called up the distributor technician and turns out the damage can’t be fixed quickly as the spare part has to be ordered first from China and France, “As it’s broken we contact the distributor in Jakarta straight away and so the technician came to check it. This means in buying this type it needs a budget on reconstructing the building as well, “For now we are trying to fix it first so patients can be treated again.” Meanwhile for patients that are queuing, according to Margiani they have taken actions by going to other hospitals outside Bali like in Surabaya, Jakarta and Yogyakarta as in Bali, Nusa Tenggara and Banyuwangi the only place for radiotherapy is Sanglah Hospital. But for those who does not have the money to go outside Bali, Sanglah has been giving chemotherapy. Yet not all of them can do so, “If a patient has problems with chemotherapy, all they can do is wait.” It is admitted that this problem is a big problem for doctors and paramedics in Sanglah Hospital as if a cancer patient don’t get the radiotherapy, their cancer cells will keep growing and devastating. Yet the hospital can’t do much as radiotherapy uses equipment. Every day, around 30 new and old patients came for radiotherapy treatment in Sanglah Hospital. One patient needs 25 times shot in a scheduled time usually one shot a day. In Sanglah Hospital, the schedule is from Monday to Friday with total time three weeks for a patient to do radiotherapy. Mostly those who come were due to breast, nasopharyngeal, and cervix cancer with insurance and no insurance. One package of radiotherapy costs IDR 6 – 11 million depends on the treatment needed. Old banyan tree fall kill one and six others injured Gianyar (Bali Post) -

Violent winds hitting the Gianyar region on Monday (Jan 24) caused a gazebo, tower, power poles and several trees topple. Even, the brunt of the wind coming suddenly made a banyan tree of hundreds of years old uprooted, killing a man and injuring six others. The violent winds suddenly occurred at around 1:05 p.m. Local Time. The most severe loss due to the incident was at Pejengaji Hamlet, Tegallalang Village, Tegallalang Subdistrict. A century-old banyan tree with the height of approximately 25 meters befell a villager and building of the Pejengaji hamlet hall. Seven people were affected in the incident. The incident killed Ni Nyoman Puri, 48, and injured Nyoman Lanus, 75 (broken left leg), Nyoman Reca, 66 (broken right leg), while AA Gede Rai Oka, 66, Wayan Mukun, 61, Nyoman Bukayasa, 40, and I Made Warung, 51, only suffered from minor injuries. According to testimony of Made Padat, the incident took place so quickly. At that time, he just left the guard post located on the east side of banyan tree, facing westerly. The victim Ni Nyoman Puri had offered him porridge before leaving the location. She was in the east of banyan tree facing easterly while selling rice porridge. Meanwhile, in the guard post sat AA Gede Rai Oka in the westernmost row and then in the east side followed by Nyoman Reca and Nyoman Lanus. In the meantime, the others were relaxing around the venue. Soon the violent

winds blew and the banyan tree uprooted. Aside from befalling the guard post along with the people inside, the tree also hit the corner of the roof of Pejengaji Hamlet hall. The incident was shocking local residents and urged the residents to hit their wooden split bell incessantly. As consequence, many residents rushed to come out of the house and gave relief to the victims. Residents evacuated the victims in the midst of heavy rains. The victim Ni Nyoman Puri was found in a position of facing southerly where her chest faced down on the terrace of the guard post. Meanwhile, two other victims, namely Lanus and Reca, their legs were pinned and suffered injuries. They were rushed to be taken to Sanjiwani Hospital of Gianyar. In the meantime, Ni Nyoman Puri when given first help by the residents was still conscious. However, on the way to the health center nearby she breathed her last, recalled Made Padat. In the meantime, the Head of Tegallalang Public Health Center, AA Oka Barata, said from the results of external examination, the victim suffered serious wounds in the chest. Her ribs were crushed and estimated that her heart and lung suffered serious in-

juries, so that she could not be saved any longer. In response to the incident, a number of officials, the subdistrict head of Tegallalang, Head of the regional agency for disaster management (BPBD) visited the location. The banyan tree befalling crosswise caused congestion on the Tegallalang – Payangan road section. After the banyan tree was cut by residents and officials of the sanitation and landscaping services (DKP) at 4:00 p.m. the road access could be passed through by vehicles. Meanwhile, the Regent of Gianyar, Tjok Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati, accompanied by the Head of Gianyar Public Works, I Nyoman Nuadi, also made site inspection directly to location. The victim Ni Nyoman Puri was given compensation. After the disaster, the Regent called on all communities to increase their vigilance in such weather conditions. Communities living around the disaster-prone region, such as coastal areas and landslide-prone areas were appealed to better improve their vigilance. And for community dwelling around big trees were suggested to cut the twigs or tree branches so as to minimize the disaster.

Two weirs as provincial assets located at Berambang Village, Negara, were damaged as destroyed by massive flash flood last yearend. As a result, tens of hectares of rice fields at two subaks (Balinese irrigation cooperative) at Berambang Village, namely Subak Pangkung Jelepung and Subak Kelinci are under threat of drought because the water sources recede. Both weirs function to stem the flow and divert the river water into the tunnel heading for the irrigation gutter of the two subaks. Since they had now broken-down, it was ensured that in the next dry season the water would recede and the river water would decrease. As a result, the water would unable to enter the tunnel and flow into the trenches of rice fields. Recently, the farmers were still lucky as it rained intermittently so the water remained available even though the dam still did not work. However, the farmers worried if the weir was not repaired immediately upon entering the drought so the subak would lack of water. Irrigation channels used to drain the water into the fields would consequently dry up. Deputy Head of Subak Pangkung Jelepung, I Nyoman Dama, when met on Monday (Jan 24) said that so far the farmers in the two subak territories relied on the irrigation from the river. The collapse of their dam used to drain the river water into the subak irrigation made the farmers worry if their irrigation would be disturbed and their rice field would face drought. So far, the farmers had to rely on the rainwater for three planting seasons. The broken down dam irrigated about 65 hectares of land in the territory of Subak Pangkung Jelepung with the member of 130 people.

Aside from getting damaged, the weir had been shallow as buried by solid material. Breaking down of the weir had occurred since the last year’s flooding. Now, hundreds of farmers in the subak territory could only submit their fate to the tragedy and did hope that their weir could be immediately restored for the sustainability of agriculture in these two subak territories. MEANWHILE, based on the data collection made by the regional agency for disaster management related to violent winds sweeping Gianyar, there were eight points of incident. In addition to the befalling banyan tree at Pejengaji, a gazebo existing in the Gianyar customary village cemetery and Beng Customary Village also befell as hit by violent winds. Similarly, the Internet tower of the Gianyar Regency Government used for financial online system just launched by Gianyar Regent befell and afflicted the roof of the Office Administration Management (Tapem) building. A sufficiently blast sound made the employees of the office scrambled out from the second floor. Even, some of them immediately took shelter under the tables. Due to such an incident, the roof and ceiling of the building were damaged. Meanwhile, the other two points were only incidents of the falling trees blocking the road access to the village of Siangan and Pejeng. At Keliki Hamlet, Tegalalang, a sugar palm tree also befell a kitchen, rice granary and house compound wall owned by I Wayan Brata, 48. Then, a northern pavilion and entrance gates shrine of I Nyoman Kerug, 48, were also befallen by albasia tree, and a garage owned by I Made Sukaras, 36, was hit by albasia tree, too. (kmb16)

Violent winds tending to whirl at around 2:00 p.m. Local Time toppled a large tree at Bunut Pegatepan Hamlet, Gelgel, Klungkung. The falling tree covered the entire body of the road connecting several villages around it. Additionally, it also knocked down a part of the compound wall of vacant land owned by the hamlet and injured an 89-yearold grandfather, Ketut Pageh. Information in the field told that at the time of incident Pageh was sitting relaxingly in the existing guard post across the falling tree together with a friend, Wayan Kandel, 70. He saw the wind whirling and caused the tree as high as 40 meters with an estimated diameter of two meters to keep on rotating and the twigs and

leaves flew. Wayan Kandel tried to run away from the tree. Meanwhile, when Pageh was about to escape, some tree branches fell down and hit the roof of the guard post. They broke down the roof tiles and the debris befell his shoulder, hands and soles of his right hand until his skin peeled off. Afterward, the wound of Pageh was treated by his family by applying Balinese traditional herbs. In the meantime, to evacuate the trunk, branches and twigs of the tree estimated to have been 30-year-old impeding the road access, the officers of Klungkung Sanitation and Landscaping Services (DKP) directly intervened. Malaysia, SKorea seek to charge 12 Somali pirates Associated Press Writer

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Malaysia and South Korea announced plans Tuesday to prosecute 12 captured Somali pirates in what maritime officials praised as a move that might deter the hijacking of ships off East Africa. Somali pirates apprehended by authorities are often not brought to justice, but merely released after being disarmed. The international community has often depended on countries like Kenya and the Seychelles in the past to prosecute pirates, who took a record 1,016 hostages for ransom last year. Naval commandos from Malaysia and South Korea staged separate raids last Friday on a Malaysian chemical tanker and South Korean-operated cargo ship seized by pirates in the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea respectively. The commandos overpowered a total of 12 pirates and rescued 44 crew members. Eight pirates were killed by the South Korean team. Malaysia was transporting seven detainees to Kuala Lumpur and planned to hold them in police custody until investigations into the incident are completed, a

federal police spokesman said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to make public statements. Attorney General Abdul Gani Patail told The Associated Press he had not decided what charges might be filed. It would be the first trial in Malaysia involving Somali pirates. South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman Kim Minseok meanwhile said that his country’s “stance is to prosecute pirates rather than swapping them” for other fishermen being held by pirates in a separate hijacking case. Seoul also was considering bringing five captured Somalis to South Korea, Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan said, noting that it was natural for his country to handle the assailants who inflicted damage on South Koreans. Such prosecutions could help send a message to Somali pirates that they must pay for their crimes, said Noel Choong, head of the International Maritime Bureau’s piracy watch center in Kuala Lumpur. “The Somali pirates must realize that the world is serious about eradicating Somali pirates and would not hesitate to capture and charge them accordingly,” Choong told the AP.

Seven drug gang suspects, meanwhile, were killed in a series of gunbattles outside the northern city of Monterrey, the Defense Department said in a statement. Among those killed was a top operator of the Zetas drug gang known as “Comandante Lino,” the statement said. It did not provide the suspect’s full name, and Defense Department officials did not immediately respond to requests for details. The statement said “Comandante Lino” led the Zetas’ turf war against the Gulf cartel in the state of Nuevo Leon. MANILA, Philippines – A powerful explosion ripped through a passenger bus in the Philippine capital on Tuesday, killing at least two people and wounding at least 18 others, officials said. The explosion was so powerful that it punched a hole in a nearby concrete fence along metropolitan Manila’s main highway in suburban Makati city, Mayor Junjun Binay said. The bus was approaching a commuter railway station when the blast occurred inside the vehicle, taking

out half of its front windshield, punching holes in windows and immediately killing a female passenger near the center of the explosion, Binay said. He said the damage indicated that it was caused by a bomb. He said one hospital reported two people dead and 18 wounded. Metro Manila police chief Nicanor Bartolome said “an explosive” must have been placed under a passenger seat somewhere in the middle of the bus where it caused a “big hole” in the vehicle large enough for a man to pass through.

Bomb investigators were examining the debris to determine the type of explosives used, he said. Binay said he was one of the first at the scene, describing the carnage to reporters. “There were bones and flesh on the pavement. A bloodied body was still there. This is an act of terrorism,” he said. It wasn’t immediately clear how many people were on the bus, but some were unharmed. Officials temporarily blocked traffic on the highway, causing a massive gridlock on Manila’s busiest thoroughfare.

KEC Improves Quality of Members TODAY, the Kuta Executive Club (KEC) may be one of the most creative tourism organizations in Bali performing activities related to the building of Bali tourism image. After signing the MoU with the Integrated Police Community Radio (IPRC) of Bali intended to establish an integrated security system in the Bali tourism industry, KEC recently held a regular member meeting to improve the quality of members. “We are necessary to perform many things to maintain the quality of hotel products and Bali tourism in general,” said Chairman of KEC, Gusti Kade Sutawa, in the midst of the preparatory meetings of the KEC members at Puri Saron Hotel, Seminyak, recently. On that account, continued Goesde as he is familiarly greeted, KEC held a meeting with the party of the Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants Association (PHRI), bank and security forces in order to provide input related to the safety and comfort of tourism in Bali and Kuta in particular. KEC would continue to print booklets aiming to promote their respective product to guests at the member hotels of the KEC. Most importantly, he argued, was to discuss how to improve the quality of human resources, especially in the KEC. In addition, some inputs were also designed to be later given to the boards of the Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants Association of Badung Chapter. One of them was by organizing an enhancing activity for the members in order to advance the Badung tourism. Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. For his favor the defendant is still young and had resented his action, he said. The sentence was lighter than the prosecutor’s demand of 12 months in jail. The two other TNI members meanwhile received eight and nine months in jail respectively for being proven violating their superiors’ order.They are first private Thamrin Mahangiri and first private Yakson Agu. Their sentence is also lighter that the prosecutor’s demand of 9 months for Thamrin and 10 months for Yakson. In response to the verdicts the two also had asked for time to consider whether or not they would appeal. The case recieved a public secrutiny after the video was shown on the YouTube. On the video they were seen beating two Papuans believed to be involved in separatist movement.

Korean investors interested in constructing Dam in Bali Antara

DENPASAR - Korean investors are interested in constructing a dam in the Unda river’s estuary which was once a mining location, in Gunaksa village, Klungkung district, Bali, a local official said. “There has been a discussion between the Klungkung district administration and the Korean investors about the latter are wish to fund the dam project. But this time we are still conducting a survey on the location,” Tjokorde Gede Agung, Klungkung district deputy chief, said here Monday. Tjokorda Agung said the location of the proposed dam was once a sand mining site in Gunaksa village, Dawan sub district.

“About 100 hectares of land are needed for the project,” he added. The water reservoir was expected to meet the need of people in Gianyar district and Denpasar city,” Tjokorda Agung said. He said the discharge of waters flowing from the upstream to the dam can generate about 1,500 liters per second. The volume of the water discharge is expected to meet the need of clean water for the people in three districts and one city in Bali, he said. Tjokorda Agung said now the Korean investor team are conducting a survey and doing development engineering detail (DED). “To supply waters to the two ar-

eas, the investor will install pipe which will be in an approximately 38 kilometers long,” he explained. He said that if the survey is going according to the plan, the construction will hopefully start this year. “We hope in 2013 the dam will be operated and supply waters to Gianyar and Denpasar. The income from this project is expected to go to the Klungkung district’s original income,” Tjokorda Agung said. Besides receiving Unda River’s water, the dam will also be developed as a water tourist site, he added. “The district administration also plans to develop a water tourist site in the dam because its location is strategic,” he explained.

To prepare the dressing, combine chicken mince with 2 tbsp of chicken spice paste and mix well. Place minced chicken lengthwise in center of banana leaf and roll up very tightly. Place banana leaf roll on aluminum foil and roll up again very tightly. Turn sides simultaneously in opposite directions to tighten the roll. Steam roll for 20 minutes. Remove aluminum foil and banana leaf; break up with fork to its original minced form. Combine mince chicken with bean mixture; season to taste with salt pepper and limejuice. BUSINESS U.S. tax cuts give world growth a boost Reuters

JOHANNESBURG – A package of U.S. tax cuts should give a lift to a global economic recovery that had already begun to gain speed late last year, the IMF said on Tuesday as it revised its world growth forecast higher. In an updated World Economic Outlook report, the International Monetary Fund said the global economy would likely expand 4.4 percent this year, a touch higher than the 4.2 percent it forecast in October. It said it expected growth of 4.5 percent in 2012. Tax cuts enacted late last year will likely lift growth in the United States by half a percent this year, and a separate simulative package from Japan would also help sustain the moderate global recovery, the IMF said. “More generally, signs are increasing that private consumption — which fell sharply during the crisis — is starting to gain a foothold in major advanced economies,” it said. Advanced economies have been a drag on global growth since the financial crisis erupted in 2007. While they are beginning to offer a bigger contribution, the IMF said those economies still pose the biggest risk to the world recovery. In particular, it warned of downside risks from the debt crisis in Europe and the high debt levels in many other advanced economies. It said “comprehensive, rapid, and decisive policy actions” were needed to tackle troubles in the euro zone. In a separate report on Tuesday, the IMF called for an increase in the effective size of Europe’s financial rescue fund and rigorous stress-testing of the region’s banks. The Fund revised up its 2011 growth projection for advanced economies to 2.5 percent from an October forecast of 2.2 percent. It said growth would likely remain at 2.5 percent next year — a pace it warned was not sufficient to make a dent in high unemployment rates. The IMF said rich nations needed to keep in place loose monetary policies to support growth.

“As long as inflation expectations remain anchored and unemployment stays higher, this is the right policy from a domestic perspective,” it said. The Fund said the U.S. economy would likely grow 3.0 percent this year, a sharp upward revision from its 2.3 percent October forecast. The IMF expects growth in the world’s largest economy to ease slightly to 2.7 percent in 2012. For Japan, the IMF said growth was now expected to reach 1.6 percent this year, an upward revision from October, and 1.8 percent next year. It maintained its October forecast for the euro zone at 1.5 percent and estimated growth would accelerate to 1.7 percent next year. It upgraded its 2011 growth forecast for Germany to 2.2 percent from 2.0 percent due to stronger domestic demand. The IMF said it expects emerging and developing economies, which include China, India, Brazil and Russia, to keep up their brisk pace of growth, although it noted that inflation pressures were rising in these countries. It revised up its 2011 growth figure for emerging economies to 6.5 percent from an October projection of 6.4 percent, and said it sees similar growth next year. For China, the IMF maintained its 2011 growth forecast at 9.6 percent and said growth next year would slow slightly to 9.5 percent. The Fund revised up its 2011 forecast for Brazilian growth to 4.5 percent versus a previous projection of 4.1 percent. It said Brazil would likely grow 4.1 percent next year. The IMF said the surge in private investment flows into emerging market economies would likely remain strong, buoyed by low interest rates in mature markets and a strong investor appetite.

Spanish banks have been hobbled by loans to construction and real estate developers since the collapse of a property bubble and they are at the heart of market fears that the country could need a bailout from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund like the ones granted Ireland and Greece last year. While major Spanish banks like Santander or BBVA can comfortably cope with their bad realestate loans, there are fears that some regional savings banks known as “cajas” may not be able to do so and will need costly government help. Salgado said Spain will set the

core capital level for all lenders at 8.0 percent, more than the 7.0 percent required by 2018 under new, international “Basel III” rules agreed in September. “This ratio can be higher for lenders that are not listed or that do not have a significant presence of private investors and depend on the wholesale market for more than 20 percent of their assets,” she told a news conference. The amount needed to recapitalise the country?s banking system will not exceed 20 billion euros (27 billion dollars) and “all or part” of that sum will come from financial markets, the minister added. Lenders will have until September to boost their capital and the government will step in to take temporary stakes in those savings banks that do not meet the new requirements. To do this Spain’s banking regulations will be changed to allow the state-backed Fund for Orderly Bank Restructuring, or

FROB, to acquire direct equity stakes in the so-called cajas for up to five years, Salgado said. “We have deemed necessary to implement these set of measures to dispel doubts on the banks’ capacity to resist under adverse scenarios, so they could access markets and grant loans to the country’s economy,” she said. Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero stressed that any takeover of a stake in a savings bank would be short-lived. “If it happens, it will be very limited and of course the presence of the state will be strictly limited,” he said during an interview with Veo7 television. Many Spanish savings banks, notorious for being used by local politicians that control them to fund pet projects from football stadiums to airports, have been locked out of the wholesale market in recent months. The Bank of Spain has been forcing the savings banks into a round of mergers, reducing their number from 45 to 17.

While Marvel Entertainment has made no secret that a member of the quartet, which was introduced in August 1961, would die, exactly who among the group would fall has been a closely held secret, until the release of issue No. 587. It’s the Human Torch, leaving teammates Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman and the Thing to pick up the pieces and move forward. Fifty years after cosmic rays transformed him into a man ablaze, the Human Torch will burn no more as the pop culture purveyor of super heroes and villains embarks on an ambitious story line that ends the Fantastic Four. In the newest issue of one of the company’s longest-running comic books, Johnny Storm’s life is taken amid a massive battle that writer Jonathan Hickman has been scripting for a year-and-half. Illustrator Steve Epting did the art. Hickman, along with his editor, Tom Brevoort, have been unsurprisingly mum on what the future may hold for the characters, but one thing is certain, the end is nigh for the Fantastic Four next month. Brevoort, senior vice president for publishing at Marvel told The

Associated Press that “588 is the final issue of the Fantastic Four. Beyond that, we’re not ready to say exactly what we’re doing. There won’t be an issue 589.” All he would say about the future was that the various subplots and threads that Hickman has written “will converge in a new thing that will be exciting and different and yet, very familiar and very much the same.” Hickman told the AP that the death is part of the natural evolution of his ongoing story line. “In doing this, we’re going to elevate the other three and the family in general and going forward with the story that we want to tell,” he said. “I think it makes complete sense. It’s kind of a logical move.” Readers have weighed in online, on Twitter and in comic shops about the buildup to the new issue, debating about who should die and who should live. “Our readers get heavily involved

in the lives of these characters. They fight alongside them, they share their triumphs and pitfalls,” he said. “They live with them and they grasp them very tightly to their breast. They take them on in a very one to one, very personal sort of way.” But is death really the end and, more so, will it be permanent? After all, death has previously visited the Fantastic Four, which was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Sue Storm, the Invisible Woman, supposedly died, but that was just a ruse. Similarly, her husband, Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic, was thought dead after being caught in a blast with his archenemy, Dr. Doom. Instead of death, however, Richards and his nemesis were snatched away to another dimension.

PHOENIX – Officials at a Phoenix hospital say rocker Bret Michaels’ surgery to close a hole in his heart was successful. A surgical team at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix performed the procedure Monday. A hospital spokeswoman says Michaels is recuperating and remains in the hospital’s intensive care unit for observation. Doctors dis-

covered the hole in Michaels’ heart in April when he was treated for a brain hemorrhage. Doctors inserted a catheter into a vein in Michaels’ groin with a closure device, and tiny cameras assisted doctors as they operated to close the hole. The closure device will remain in Michaels’ heart permanently to stop abnormal blood flow between two chambers of his heart, which is thought to have caused the warning stoke he suffered.

Aging NASA Probe Headed to Second Comet LITTLETON, Colo. – NASA’s Stardust-NExT spacecraft is hoping for sweet science on Valentine’s Day when it makes a close flyby of the comet Tempel 1. Launched in February 1999, the industrious Stardust spacecraft zipped by comet Wild 2 in January 2004, flying through the comet’s coma and snagging particles from that celestial wanderer. Two years later the probe parachuted its sample-carrying capsule into the Utah Test and Training Range in the Utah desert. The still-operating craft — renamed Stardust-NExT, for “New Exploration of Tempel 1” — is en route to inspect Tempel 1, a task begun by NASA’s Deep Impact spacecraft six years ago. Stardust-NExT’s job is to obtain high-resolution images of the comet and, it is hoped, the crater that was made when Deep Impact’s impactor slammed into Tempel 1 in July 2005. At the time, the stirred-up debris cloud obscured the view of

any newly formed feature. Here at Lockheed Martin Space Systems, all is in readiness for the upcoming encounter. The aerospace firm has been NASA’s industrial partner for Stardust throughout its two-mission life, having designed, built, integrated and tested the spacecraft. WASHINGTON – Before there was Dr. Atkins, there was William Banting. He invented the low-carb diet of 1863. Even then Americans were trying out advice that urged fish, mutton or “any meat except pork” for breakfast, lunch and dinner — hold the potatoes, please. It turns out our obsession with weight and how to lose it dates back at least 150 years. And while now we say “overweight” instead of “corpulent” — and obesity has become epidemic — a look back at dieting history shows what hasn’t changed is the quest for an easy fix. “We grossly, grossly underestimate” the difficulty of changing behaviors that fuel obesity, says Clemson University sociologist Ellen Granberg, after examining archives at the Library of Congress. She believes it’s important to show “we’re not dealing with some brand new, scary phenomenon we’ve never dealt with before.” Indeed, the browning documents are eerily familiar. Consider Englishman William Banting’s account of losing almost 50 pounds in a year. He did it by shunning “bread, butter, milk, sugar, beer and potatoes, which had been the main (and I thought innocent) elements of my existence” in favor of loads of meat. His pamphlet, “Letter on Corpulence, Addressed to the Public,”

But just as doctors today bemoan a high-tech, immobile society, the emergence of trolleys, cars and other machinery in the late 19th century scaled back the sheer number of calories people once burned, Granberg explains. Increasing prosperity meant easier access to food. “An excess of flesh is to be looked upon as one of the most objectionable forms of disease,” the Philadelphia Cookbook declared in 1900. Low-cal cookbooks hadn’t arrived yet; the calorie wasn’t quite in vogue. By 1903, La Parle obesity soap that “never fails to reduce flesh” was selling at a pricey $1 a bar. The Louisenbad Reduction Salt pledged to “wash away your fat.” Soon came an exercise machine, the Graybar Stimulator to jiggle the pounds. Bile Beans promoted a laxative approach.

ASTANA – Kazakhstan on Tuesday extended a ban on hunting saiga antelopes until 2021 as the Central Asian nation seeks to save the endangered species. An order by the country’s agriculture ministry to extend the ban was issued in November 2010 and published in local media on Tuesday, effective immediately. The previous ban lasted until late

last year. Saiga antelopes, which have distinctive bulbous noses, are listed as a critically endangered species by WWF. The Kazakh agriculture ministry put the country’s saiga population at over 90,000 antelopes as of late 2010, although the WWF estimates the antelope’s entire number at 50,000, having shrunk from over a million in the 1990s. Its population fell drastically following the collapse of the

Soviet Union, due to uncontrolled hunting and demand for its horns in Chinese medicine. The introduction of the new ban follows an outbreak of pasteurellosis, an infectious disease that strikes the lungs and intestines, that claimed nearly 12,000 saiga antelopes in Kazakhstan last year. The antelopes migrate between Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, Turkmenistan and China.

Duncan went down with a left knee injury in the second quarter that had the entire Spurs bench stunned and shaken. He returned to finish with 16 points and seven rebounds, helping San Antonio rebound from a loss to New Orleans and calm any nerves about what initially appeared to be a serious fall. Tony Parker added 18 points and 11 assists, Antonio McDyess had 14 points and 10 rebounds and the NBA-best Spurs (38-7) cruised to an otherwise stress-free victory that clinched the Western Conference’s best record through games of Feb. 6. Duncan had to be helped up but eventually walked to the locker room under his own power. Apparently, he wasn’t hurt too badly. Duncan, diagnosed with a hyperflexed left knee, returned to start the third quarter and San Antonio found its spark. Duncan, Ginobili and Parker — the core of all those championship teams — helped San Antonio build an 83-70 lead. Duncan played his usual minutes and showed no signs of being hobbled. The Spurs had won eight in a row until losing to the Hornets in their previous game. San Antonio also has had winning streaks of 12 and 10 games this season.

PARIS – When cycling’s top rider, Alberto Contador, failed a drug test at the Tour de France last year, he joined a long list of athletes who have blamed positives on something they swallowed — from veal to whiskey to toothpaste. Whether cycling officials think Contador is lying with his claim that tainted steak caused him to flunk his dope test will soon become clear. Spain’s cycling federation says it should announce a decision within days or weeks. Whatever the ruling, Contador’s case highlights a growing concern among anti-doping scientists, coaches and athletes around the world. Even if the story given by the three-time Tour de France winner sounds tired to outsiders, there is a growing body of opinion that the drug Contador tested positive for — clenbuterol — can, in fact, be consumed unwittingly from eating bad meat. Unless anti-doping rules are changed, scientists warn, there’s a risk that innocent athletes who did not dope could be unfairly punished. Among the prominent people to raise questions about clenbuterol testing is Zhao Jian, deputy director-general of China’s Anti-Doping Agency. Clenbuterol burns fat and builds muscle. That makes it attractive for both dopers and farmers, who use it to bulk

up livestock. In China, in particular, its illegal use in farming is well documented. The Chinese nickname for the drug — “lean meat powder” — speaks of its muscle-building properties. To verify whether clenbuterol-contaminated meat can cause flunked tests, China’s anti-doping lab in 2009 bought pork, had lab workers eat it, and analyzed their urine. Some failed. Had they been athletes, they would have faced a ban. “We discovered that if the pork meat or liver is heavily contaminated, then you can test positive from eating it, but not every time,” Zhao said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. “It’s possible. That’s fact, scientifically proven. You can test positive from contaminated meat.” On its website, China’s agency advises athletes to avoid eating out, cautioning: “Our country’s anti-doping testing lab has done experiments which show that eating pork meat or pork liver containing ‘lean meat powder’ — clenbuterol — can trigger a positive result.” Part of the problem is that clenbuterol detection has become so good. To be accredited by the World Anti-Doping Agency, labs must be able to detect very small concentrations. Some, however, can spot concentrations far lower than WADA’s required minimum, traces tiny enough to possibly have come from food, not doping.

Mansell becomes Lotus ambassador NIGEL Mansell has become an ambassador for the Lotus car company, and will help play a development role with the company’s new T125 single-seater special. The former world champion will begin his duties with a test of the T125 in Abu Dhabi this week, where he will work alongside Jean Alesi and James Rossiter.

“Returning to Lotus in this capacity brings back a lot of memories for me,” Mansell said about his new role. “I will always be extremely grateful to Lotus and especially to Colin Chapman, who was so inspirational and almost like a second father to me. “I’ve been watching the developments taking place recently at Hethel with their ambitious race and road

Glock: Virgin will be stronger in ’11 TIMO Glock is adamant that Virgin Racing can enjoy a ‘much stronger’ campaign in 2011, after saying that any concerns he had about the outfit’s potential have been laid to rest. The German publicly expressed doubts about his future commitment to the team last year, on the back of a sometimes troubled debut campaign for the outfit. But following end-of-season discussions with senior management to talk through frustrations and map out the future, Glock says he is fired up about the team’s potential for 2011. “We had a good sit together in the last couple of races. John Booth and [CEO] Graeme Lowdon and myself spent quite a lot of time together, talking about the next year,” Glock told AUTOSPORT in an exclusive interview. “They had some quite positive things, which I think calmed the situation down a little bit, and made life a bit easier for everyone. So in the end there was no real discussion. “The team is moving in the right direction and we’ve got some good sponsors on board. Marussia is a big partner now. I think they are quite straightforward and they want some success in the future, and that’s good. That’s what the team needs,

and in the end we have to find out how quickly we can move up.” Glock believes that changes to the staffing structure, and the experience gained throughout 2010, will pay dividends. “The team has made a lot of changes in terms of the structure, people moving around, putting them in different positions, which I think has helped quite a lot already,” he said. “We’re much better, much stronger, than the same time last year. But

in the end you need a car which is quick to move forward, and that’s what we have to prove this year. “You can’t gain three seconds over the winter, that’s not possible, and we have to be realistic about what we have, and the budget we have. We have to try and find a way to move closer to Toro Rosso and all these guys and try to stay with Lotus, or whatever the team is called now! That has to be the target.”

Timo Glock is hoping for big strides from Virgin in 2011

I feel very lucky and very happy to be in MotoGP with Yamaha. “I’m the champion, but that’s the past. Now we start fighting again to be number one in 2011. We must concentrate fully.” Lorenzo believes the instant pace of new factory Honda rider Casey Stoner during November’s Valencia test is to be taken very seriously - and he places the 2007 world champion (for Ducati) above the likes of Rossi and last year’s runner-up Dani Pedrosa.

”I keep saying Casey is my closest competitor because we are the fastest now,” Lorenzo explained. “Seeing from the Valencia test result and how our best times were so close.” Stoner and Lorenzo were separated by just 0.113sec at the end of the Valencia test but, even if that form continues during the forthcoming pre-season tests, Lorenzo feels the unique nature of the Qatar night race means the opening round could see a surprise winner. ”Nobody knows what’s going to happen in Qatar. The night race is beautiful, but different and maybe in Qatar the winner is another rider. Not me or Casey,” he confessed. Attention then turned to former team-mate Rossi, who has left Yamaha after four titles in seven seasons to start a new challenge at Ducati.
