NEW YORK — “Mad Men” stars Christina Hendricks and John Slattery will be presenting a special award at the International Emmys Gala to the show’s creator and executive producer Matthew Weiner who’s preparing the final episodes of the 1960s Madison Avenue ad agency saga slated to air in spring 2015. Weiner will be receiving the honorary International Emmy Founders Award at Monday night’s ceremony at the Hilton New York. “’Mad Men’ has really come to define television for a whole generation of viewers,” said Bruce L. Paisner, president and CEO of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. “It’s an amazing global cultural phenomenon ... a force of nature as much as just a television series.” “Although these are stories in theory out of the ‘60s, part of the success of the show is that it’s a touchstone for how we think about ourselves and our own relationships even today.” The presentation to Weiner will be the centerpiece of the awards ceremony, hosted by British comedian Matt Lucas, creator of the comedy series “Little Britain,” a two-time International Emmy winner. A total of 40 nominees from 19 countries will be competing in 10 categories for International Emmys, established to honor excellence in TV programming outside the U.S. Britain had a leading six nominations, including best actor and actress nods for Stephen Dillane and Olivia Colman for their roles in popular crime dramas. Brazil had five nominations, including nods for three Globo TV productions: “The Mayor’s Wife” (comedy), “Precious Pearl” (tele-
novela) and “Alexander and Other Heroes” (TV movie/miniseries). Argentina, Canada and Japan each had three nominations. Dillane, who portrays Stannis Baratheon in “Game of Thrones,” was recognized for his role as an aging British police detective in the British/French crime drama “The Tunnel,” which as an entry from France was among the nominees for best drama series. Colman was nominated for her role in “Broadchurch” as a detective investigating the murder of an 11-year-old boy in a coastal Dorset town. Other British nominees include: the crime-thriller “Utopia” (drama series), “An Adventure in Space and Time” (TV movie/miniseries) about the creation and early years of the “Dr. Who” sci-fi series, “No Fire Zone: The Killing Fields of Sri Lanka” (documentary) and “Educating Yorkshire” (non-scripted entertainment). The Argentine drama “Television por la Justicia,” about cases inspired by real-life people harmed by b a d judicial rulings, had two nominations in t h e acting
categories — for Pablo Rago and Romina Gaetani. The other actor nominees were Canada’s Claude Legault for “19-2” and China’s Xiubo Wu for “The Orphan of Zhao.” Rounding out the actress nominees were Turkey’s Tuba Buyukustun for “20 Dakika” (“20 Minutes”) and the Netherlands’ Bianca Krijgsman for “De Nieue Wereld” (“The New World”). A new category was introduced this year to recognize non-English language U.S. prime-time programs. The nominees include three Telemundo Internacional productions — “Pasion Prohibida,” ‘’La Patrona” and “El Senor de los Cielos” — and Nat Geo Mundo’s “Temple de Acero.” Brazilian telenovela stars Gloria Pires and Milton Goncalves will present the honorary International Emmy Directorate Award to Roberto Irineu Marinho, chairman and CEO of the Globo Group of Companies, Brazil’s leading media and entertainment conglomerate. His father, Roberto Marinho, who received the same award in 1983, founded TV Globo, which will be celebrating its 50th anniversary next year.

AMLAPURA - Virgin Beach tourist attraction at Perasi village, Karangasem, starts to be visited by many travelers. Averagely the daily visit of foreign travelers to the white sandy beach reaches 200 people. Such tourism development makes the economy of Perasi village increasingly grow. However, amidst the tourism development, the Karangasem government is unable to participate in the development at that location. Although being very popular, Virgin Beach also known as the white sandy beach has not been able to develop optimally. It has no facilities as those that can be found in other tourist attractions in Karangasem. Even, to get to the location, visitors should pass through a steep and damaged road access. I Gede Suparjana, 32, one of the residents around the Virgin Beach claimed that the tourist visit to the beach reached 400 to 500 people each
day. Such a large number of visitors inspired him to provide a parking lot. “On holidays, the number of visitors can reach thousands of people, so that the existing parking lot can be fully occupied. Therefore, I open a parking lot service,” he said when met on Sunday (Nov 23). Other than Gede Suparjana, many other residents also offered parking services at their own land. With the average daily income reaching IDR 300,000, Gede Suparjana admitted
to have immediately left his job as a security guard in order to focus on managing the parking space. “On regular day I can earn IDR 300,000 from the parking services. But on religious holidays like Galungan, I can get IDR 800,000 a day,” he added. Unfortunately, when the Virgin Beach has been visited by many travelers, even there is no participation of Karangasem government in developing the tourism in the region, especially related to access to the beach
being famous for its white sand. In order to be able to access the beach, customary villagers worked together to clear the land so that it could be reached by vehicles. However, the road access made by residents was only still limited to a dirt road. Limited financing owned by customary village became a constraint for residents to make asphalt road. When asked for confirmation about the Virgin Beach, the Head of Karangasem Culture and Tourism Agency, I Wayan Purna, admitted that his party could not touch the tourist attraction. Other than due to the presence of investors, the attraction was also owned by the two villages namely the Perasi and Bugbug.
This condition caused a number of facilities such as road access or other development assistance could not be provided by the Karangasem government. “Investors have come in for several times. In addition, the location is owned by customary villages so that we are hard to get in,” he explained when confirmed. Although the government did not play its role, many tourist accommodations were already established on the naturally formed beach. Several buildings such as cafeteria or sundeck had been prepared by local people. “Now, the location has been managed by customary village, where it has also provided sunbathing bench on the beach and made other businesses,” he explained. Increase the love to local flowers

TABANAN - Flowers are the main requirements for the Hindus in Bali to be used in the making of ritual oblations. Tabanan itself has a region that produces flowers namely Baturiti. The Head of Tabanan Agriculture and Horticulture Agency, Nyoman Budana, said that farmer groups in Baturiti planted local flowers such as chrysanthemum, anthurium, heliconia and marigold. The local flowers, according to Budana, were no less beautiful than imported flowers when used in the flower arrangement.

It could yield 777 flower arrangements and got the award of the Indonesian World Record Museum (MURI). Previously, the title of MURI in flower arrangement was held by the Agency for Agricultural Research and Development, Ministry of Agriculture, which only managed to make 600 pieces of flower arrangements. The Regent of Tabanan, Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti, hoped that the potential owned by Baturiti could increase the income of farmers. “Local flowers owned by Tabanan cannot be found in other areas. NEGARA - After being stopped by the discipline, the theft of sea sand at Pekutatan village, Pekutatan subdistrict is rampant back. The Joint Decree (SKB) once issued in 2013 in the Asta Buana Stadium, Pekutatan seems no longer effective. Such theft was committed by playing a game of cat and mouse at night. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

CERN scientists discover 2 new subatomic particles

GENEVA — Scientists at the world’s largest smasher said Wednesday they have discovered two new subatomic particles never seen before that could widen our understanding of the universe. An experiment using the European Organization for Nuclear Research’s Large Hadron Collider found the new particles, which were predicted to exist, and are both baryons made from three quarks bound together by a strong force. In a statement last weekend,
officials at the lab known by its French acronym CERN announced the discovery, which could shed more light on how things work beyond the “Standard Model” physics theory explaining the basic building blocks of matter. The results also were submitted to the publication Physical Review
Letters. “Nature was kind and gave us two particles for the price of one,” said one of the CERN collaborators, Matthew Charles, of the CNRS’s LPNHE laboratory at Paris VI University. The new particles are more than six times as massive as the protons
that scientists have been deliberately crashing into each other in a 17-mile (27-kilometer) tunnel on the Swiss-French border near Geneva to see what they can discover about the makeup of the universe and its tiniest particles. The heavier weight of the two particles is due in part to their “spins” in opposite directions which is “an exciting result,” said Steven Blusk of Syracuse University in New York. CERN-based physicist Patrick Koppenburg said the study, using
data taken during 2011 and 2012, could help differentiate between Standard Model effects and “anything new or unexpected in the future.” Teams of thousands of CERN scientists also used the state-ofthe-art particle accelerator to discover the subatomic particle known as the Higgs boson, without which particles wouldn’t hold together and there would be no matter. The discovery helped Peter Higgs win the Nobel Prize by proving his theories right.

ITHACA, New York — Richard Johnson can see right through the masterpieces of Rembrandt and Van Gogh. The Cornell University electrical and computer engineering professor is a digital art detective, able to unlock
the mysteries of a work’s age and authenticity by analyzing its underlying canvas or paper. Using high-resolution X-ray images, the 64-year-old academic can actually determine if paintings came from the same bolt of hand-loomed canvas, each of which has a varying
thread density pattern that can be as unique as a fingerprint. Linking multiple pieces of canvas to the same bolt can shore up arguments for authenticity and even put works in chronological order. It’s a valuable service to worldclass museums that comes through

Eventually, Johnson and Rice University professor Don Johnson (no relation) developed digital “weave density maps” of canvases that added computational power to what had been a painstaking process that required scholars to study small samples with magnifying glasses. “It turns out with the eye, you make mistakes,” said Louis van Tilborgh, senior researcher at the Van Gogh museum. Van Tilborgh sees the weave maps as an important tool in the ongoing work of precisely dating and ordering all of Vincent Van Gogh’s paintings. Johnson in recent years has left the canvas to other researchers as he focuses on paper. He’s been analyzing the old-fashioned paper used by Rembrandt for his prints, which was made by laying pulp on screens. Scholars know the dates when Rembrandt etched the copper plates to make the prints, but they are often less sure when an individual print was made. Was it one of the initial prints or did it come years later after the artist’s death? Johnson is using high-resolution digital images of Rembrandt prints owned by Cornell’s museum to try to discern patterns that the screens impressed on the back of the prints. Separate prints cut from the same larger sheet of paper could be matched to provide the same sort of contextual information revealed by studying canvas. The details are different, but the idea of searching for useful patterns is the same, as is the idea of bridging the gap between art and tech. “My philosophy all along has been to convince both sides that this is worth doing and they should be talking to each other,” Johnson said.

BANGLI - The street lighting installed along the Penelokan-Kintamani tourism line does not function properly. Since the past two years, the street lighting in the region has gone out so that Penelokan road section is dark. Such condition has occurred after the payment was handed over by the government to each village. Deputy Chairman of the Bangli House, Komang Carles, said on Sunday (Nov 23) that the street lighting along the Penelokan-Kintamani line had went out since two years ago, exactly after the issuance of policy that handed over the payment of electricity bill from Bangli government to each village. According to Carles, the policy issued by the regent in 2012 was actually pretty good for budget efficiency. However, on the one hand, another problem emerged because
some villages had unclear borders. “According to village authority whose area passed through by the path did not dare turn on the street lighting because their boundaries are unclear,” said Carles. Not only that, the budget used to pay the street lighting was also very minimal compared to the number of lamps installed. With such condition, many villages ultimately chose not to turn on the lamps at their village path. Considering that such condition
occurred since the past few years, Carles hoped the street lighting payment system could be returned to the government as before. The reason, such kind of problem had never occurred when the street lighting payment was made by local government. “To avoid any problem, the street lighting payment should be returned to the Secretariat of Bangli government,” he said. Previously, similar case was also revealed by Deputy Chairman of the Bangli House, Nyoman Basma.
He claimed to be agreed if the street lighting payment system was returned to the previous one. Moreover, the contract agreement with the state-owned power company (PLN) was not between the PLN and the village, but between the PLN and the Bangli government. He judged this system would be more effective to restore the condition of the road in Bangli so that it would no longer be dark. PLN Bangli a total of 10 villages in Bangli were recorded to have street lighting arrears. The total arrears reached IDR 84,837,971 for the ten villages. Due to the arrears, the PLN had imposed firm sanction by dismantling the street lighting. Unfortunately, such firm action could not make the village having the arrears settle their obligations. We’re here because of the type of man he chose to be. We’re here because of his selflessness.” The 26-year-old man from Indianapolis was captured last year in eastern Syria while delivering relief supplies to refugees of Syria’s civil war. Kassig, a former U.S. Army ranger who had served in Iraq in 2007, had returned to the Mideast in 2012 and founded a relief organization to help war victims. His parents, Ed and Paula Kassig of Indianapolis, learned of their son’s capture last year, but did not disclose his captivity

In October, their son appeared in another video released by the Islamic State group that showed the beheading of a fellow aid worker, Britain’s Alan Henning. Tunisia polls give ex-regime figure the edge

TUNIS — A veteran politician from the previous regime that ran on a platform of restoring the prestige of the state took the lead in Tunisia’s first free and fair presidential election Sunday, according to exit polls. But there will still likely be a runoff next month. Beji Caid Essebsi, 87, replicated the success of his Nida Tunis (Tunisia’s Call) party in last month’s legislative elections by taking 47 percent of the vote, with outgoing interim president Moncef Marzouki following with 27 percent, according to one polling company. Other polls gave similar figures, indicating that the two men will go head to head in a second round set for Dec. 28. Marzouki’s staffers contested the polls, maintaining their candidate had the plurality. Official results are expected in the coming days. The electoral commission said 60 percent of the 5.3 million registered voters participated. The vote appeared to be a choice between fears over security and the freedoms brought by their revolution, with Essebsi representing the stability of the old ways and Marzouki the fervor of the revolution. The North African country’s transition has remained on track in sharp contrast to the upheavals brought by the Arab Spring elsewhere in the region, including the brutal military coup in Egypt and the conflicts in
Syria, Yemen and Libya. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry congratulated Tunisians for the vote, calling the country’s transition “an inspiration to all those in the region and around the world.” It hasn’t been easy for Tunisia, however, and the nearly four years since the revolution have been marked by social unrest, terrorist attacks and high inflation that has voters punishing the moderate Islamists that first came to power. “The thing I’m worried most about for the future is terrorism. Right now, we don’t know who’s coming into the country, and this is a problem,” said Amira Judei, 21, who voted in the southern city of Kasserine, near the border with Algeria and a point of terrorist attacks. Voting hours in the rural regions along the border were reduced because of security fears. But Judei insisted that “the most important priority is unemployment.” Tunisia’s revolution began in areas such as Kasserine in the impoverished south, and the country’s 15 percent unemployment rate

WASHINGTON - Climate change could undermine efforts to defeat extreme poverty around the globe, the World Bank warned Sunday. In a new report on the impact of global warming, the bank said sharp temperature rises would cut deeply into crop yields and water supplies in many areas and possibly set back efforts to bring populations out of poverty. “Climate change poses a substantial and escalating risk to development progress that could undermine global efforts to eliminate extreme poverty and promote shared prosperity,” the report said. “Without strong, early action, warming could exceed 1.5–2 degrees Celsius and the resulting impacts could significantly worsen intra- and intergenerational poverty in multiple
regions across the globe.” The bank said it is already likely that average temperatures will rise 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) from pre-industrial levels, based on the built-in impact of past and current greenhouse gas emissions. That means that extreme heat events, sea level rise and more frequent tropical cyclones may now be unavoidable. But without concerted action, the real danger is that the average global temperature increase could go to 4.0 degrees Celsius by the end of the century. The bank called that “a frightening world of increased risks and global
instability.” “Ending poverty, increasing global prosperity and reducing global inequality, already difficult, will be much harder with warming of two degrees Celsius, said World Bank President Jim Yong Kim. “But at four degrees, there is serious doubt whether these goals can be achieved at all.” The new report, “Turn Down the Heat: Confronting the New Climate Normal” focuses on the specific regional impacts of warming. Warming of two degrees could lower the yield of Brazil’s soybean crop by 70 percent. Andean cities would be threatened by melting gla-
ciers, and Caribbean and West Indian coastal communities could see their fish supplies dwindle. Two-degree warming could reduce yields of maize, wheat and grape crops in Macedonia by 50 percent. In northern Russia, it would mean substantial melting of the permafrost, causing a surge in damaging methane emissions, which would amplify the warming trend. The World Bank has set an ambitious target of eliminating extreme poverty around the world by 2030, and Kim says that can still be done if warming is limited to just two degrees. But temperatures have already increased 0.8 degree from the preindustrial mean, and the new study says it is likely already too late to forestall a 1.5-degree gain. The impacts of poverty exacer-
bated by climate change are wide and complex, the report shows. It will increase migration, though some people without means will be stuck with worse prospects in life. In the Middle East and North Africa, water resources and agriculture will be under severe threat from warming. And in turn, the impact could be political. The report cited two studies that linked the Arab Spring uprising to the drought impact of warming on food prices. Further climate change could add to security problems “by placing additional pressures on already scarce resources and by reinforcing such preexisting threats as political instability, poverty, and unemployment,” it said. “This creates the potential for social uprising and violent conflict.”

Bird attack is one of the factors that can kindle a crop failure of rice farmers in Bali. In harvest season, birds often compete to eat farmers’ grains. Unmitigatedly, they come in crowds with thousands of members. Now, farmers in Bali have a tradition to dismiss those naughty birds, namely by posting lelakut or scarecrow in the form of human figure to scare them. Scarecrows are usually installed when the milky rice stage occurred before harvest. They are installed on the rice field plot and embellished with colorful plastic tassels. Each is tied with a rope and connected to the main rope stretching from one end to another in the rice field. A more creative farmer sometimes makes movable scarecrows so that they can nod when blown by wind. Although their form and material are relatively simple, the scarecrow in rice field is just like a showcase of installation art. Its music is made by using cans filled with small gravels to make it vibrate. Sometimes it is accompanied by human cheers and shouts. However, mystically the scarecrow that has been given a mantra and special offering can serve as a catastrophe repellent. “Scarecrow can be made from various materials. If given a particular ritual and mantra, it can effectively resist black magic. Besides, it is also believed to keep the field from any disturbance of bad intention,” said I Wayan Sumajaya, Chief of Subak Mole, Tabanan. The man familiarly called Pan Padma said that farmers formerly believed if it was capable of keeping the rice field away from leak or black magic disturbance or those who envied to the rice field owner. Depending on the creations of farmers, it can be made into a spooky face with big and protruding teeth, large eyes and so on. To color it, farmers usually use whiting (white) and charcoal (black). These colors are used to form the eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth and teeth to make it look creepy. Sometimes, it is also given a hat made from palm leaves or damaged bamboo steamer, so that it looks like a real human. I Ketut Murdana, a lecturer at the ISI Denpasar, admitted the scarecrow was an expression of farmers in the fields. However, its aesthetic value was not emphasized because they needed to have a scary and spooky figure. The inspiration was very simple, namely to make something that could look spooky and drive birds away. “It indicates the Hindu community in Bali as an artist. As evidence, farmers are able to assemble the scarecrow without having to learn in particular,” he said. Since the birds were then increasingly stubborn, it was equipped with sounds like the music. Though the materials were simple like can, bamboo and clapping hands, the sound generated could help repel the birds. “In the past, it was very simple, but now it is combined with modern materials, such as plastic, clothes and so on,” he said.

Nepal bus crash death toll reaches 47 Associated Press
KATMANDU — Rescuers recovered 42 more bodies from the wreckage of a bus that plunged into a river in west Nepal raising the confirmed death toll to 47, police said Monday. Police said the bodies were recovered after the bus wreckage was pulled to the bank of the river on Sunday. The bus crashed Thursday into the Bheri river about 400 kilometers (250 miles) west of the capital, Katmandu, but it took days for rescuers to pull the wreckage out of the river. Five bodies were recovered earlier while 10 other people on board the bus were able to swim to safety. The bus was speeding on a narrow mountain road and plunged into the river when it tried to avoid crashing into a tractor. It took hours for rescuers to reach the rural road and divers struggled in the freezing water to pull out the wreckage. Accidents in the Himalayan nation are often caused by poorly maintained vehicles and narrow roads.

Mexico summons Uruguay’s ambassador over comment Associated Press
MEXICO CITY — Mexico summoned Uruguay’s ambassador on Sunday after the South American country’s president described Mexico as a kind of “failed state” in a magazine interview. President Jose Mujica’s comments were in response to a question about 43 college students missing in southern Mexico and appeared in Foreign Affairs’ Latin American edition. But late Sunday Mujica released a statement on Uruguay’s presidential website backing away from the comment and saying that Mexico wasn’t a failed state. “The crude news that reaches us about the consequences of drug trafficking in countries like Guatemala, Honduras and now Mexico shout to us a lesson of true pain that could show us our
own futures,” the left-leaning leader said. But “they are not, nor will be, these nations, innocuous or failed states...” Mujica expressed solidarity with Mexico, its political system and its government in the face of the September disappearance of the students in the city of Iguala, a case that has sparked widespread protests. Prosecutors say local police working for a drug gang probably turned the students over to gang members, who may have killed them and burned their bodies. foreign ministry released a statement expressing its “categorical rejection” of his original statements. TOKYO — Dozens of villagers remained in shelters Monday as aftershocks rattled a region in central Japan hit by a weekend earthquake that injured at least 41 people and destroyed more than 50 homes. The damage in a mountainous area that hosted the 1998 winter Olympics was worse than initially thought, though many were rejoicing at the lack of any deaths. At least 20 people, including one 2-year-old, were pulled from homes toppled by the magnitude-6.7 earthquake late Saturday night. Seven of the injured had broken bones, many after being crushed by heavy furniture as they slept on their tatami floors. Local experts said the structure of the mostly wooden houses, which are built to withstand loads of many feet of heavy, wet snow in the winter, helped prevent more casualties. Some said they used the flashlights on their mobile phones to find their way to safety in the pitch dark. “Words cannot express my gratitude,” Kimito Tsutaki, 73, told national broadcaster NHK after she was pulled from her quilt bedding. Neighbors used a car jack to lift collapsed timbers from on top of her. The quake, which struck west of Nagano city at a relatively shallow depth of 5 kilometers (3 miles), was in an area prone to strong earthquakes due to an active fault, experts of the Japan Meteorological Agency reported. INDONESIA Government bans state-owned enterprises’ CEOs from holding meeting in hotels Antara
JAKARTA - As a budget-saving measure, State-owned Enterprises Minister Rini Soemarno has instructed CEOs and directors of state-owned enterprises to hold meetings in their offices rather than in hotels. “Meetings must be held in the office. If there are official visits scheduled, the CEOs and directors must stay in budget hotels. All state-owned enterprises’ activities must be efficient,” Rini noted on Monday. According to the minister, the policy was in accordance with the
government’s plan to maximize budget efficiency. The Ministry of State Employees and Bureaucracy Reform had earlier banned state employees from conducting meetings in hotels and reducing the number of unnecessary official visits. Minister of State Employees and Bureaucratic Reform Yuddy Chris-
nandi earlier stated that the new efficiency policy implemented on governmental bodies could save up to 20 percent of the state budget. The efficiency policy will come into effect from December 1, 2014, and is applicable to all employees in the ministries, provincial governments, and district governments.

JAKARTA - Nearly 25 years ago, a global promise was made to uphold and protect the rights of children at all costs to ensure their all-round growth and well-being, so that they achieve their maximum potential. The pledge was marked with the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) by the UN General Assembly on 20 November, 1989. The Children’s Rights Convention stipulates four general principles: non-discrimination, the child’s best interests, their right to life, survival, and development, and respect for their views. “We will do everything in our power to protect and promote their rights to survive and thrive, to learn and grow, to make their voices heard, and to reach their full potential,” according to the UN on the occasion of Universal Children’s Day 2014. So, 25 years following the adoption of the CRC, the big question still remains whether the world now is a better place for children. The United Nations Children’s Funds (UNICEF) clearly stated that the world community must do more to protect children, particularly in conflict-ridden areas such as in Iraq, Syria, South Sudan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria. Therefore, while observing Universal Children’s Day on Nov. 20, 2014, the UN called on all nations to recommit themselves to advancing the rights of every child, especially those who have been overlooked. “We cannot say that the rights of all children are fulfilled when, despite our progress, some 6.3 million children under 5 years of age died in 2013, mostly from preventable causes; while 168 million children aged 5 to 17 were engaged in child labor in 2012, and 11 percent of girls are married before they turn 15,” UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon noted in his message on Universal Children’s Day 2014. Ban emphasized that all children are entitled to their rights. “Every child has the right to survive and thrive, to be educated, to be free from violence and abuse, to participate, and to be heard,” he remarked. In Indonesia, Universal Children’s Day was also observed by an NGO called Childcare Advocacy Network, to reaffirm its commitment to protect and push for children’s rights in line with Presidential Decree Number 36/1996. The function was attended by representatives of the Jakarta Legal Aid (LBH Jakarta), the National Alliance of National Diversity in Unity, the Indonesia Conference on Religion and Peace, the Rehabilitation Foundation, and the Task Force for Protection of Children, among others. “Hundreds of children from across the country participated in the celebration. We encourage them to strengthen and motivate each other and play together,” Nia Sjarifudin, the coordinator of the National Children’s Day celebrations, noted on Nov. 22, 2014. The commemoration, which marked the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the CRC, was held to express solidarity towards forgotten and abandoned children who have become victims of the community or state policies. “(They included) disabled children, those who were displaced because of forced evictions, those from very poor families or the victims of discrimination based on their religion, such as Ahmadiyah, Syiah-Sampang, Animism, and GKI Yasmin-HKBP Filadelfia, and the children in refugee camps,” she stated. Nia Sjarifudin claimed that the system has not paid attention to these children who are not offered optimal protection for their growth. The coordinator hoped that the commemoration could help to protect the children who face discrimination in this country. The condition of children in Indonesia has been rather gloomy, given the fact that during the past four years, from 2010 to 2014, some 21,689,797 cases involving violence against children were reported in 34 provinces and 179 districts and cities. Of the reported cases, 62 percent of them were related to sexual abuse, while the rest comprised physical violence, neglect, abduction, economic exploitation, trafficking for commercial sexual exploitation, and custody disputes. The National Commission for Child Protection (Komnas PA) had received as many as 2,726 reports related to violence against children during the period between January and September, this year.

Nico Rosberg hailed Lewis Hamilton as the best driver on the 2014 Formula 1 grid after losing the title to his Mercedes teammate in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. With pre-race championship leader Hamilton in front from the outset, Rosberg was looking unlikely to claim the championship even before an engine problem that ultimately dropped him to 14th place set in. “I’m very disappointed, a good chance was there today,” said Rosberg. “It didn’t work out, but in the end my race didn’t make a difference because Lewis won fair and square anyway. “I won’t dwell on my issue today - he deserved to win today and he deserved to win the championship. “He was this year that little bit better so it is fully deserved. He was the best driver on the grid this year. “It was a great battle
between us, and that’s what I race for. It was a very intense time of course, but also fantastic. The result in front of nearly 60,000 fans at the Mineirao Stadium in Belo Horizonte guaranteed the defending champion an insurmountable lead over second-place Sao Paulo, which defeated Santos 1-0 in Cuiaba to remain seven points behind with only six to be won. Cruzeiro is the first team to win consecutive titles since Sao Paulo won three in a row from 2006-08. Midfielder Ricardo Goulart and striker Everton Ribeiro scored a goal each to secure the team’s fourth league title with two rounds still to be played in the championship. The result in front of nearly 60,000 fans at the Mineirao Stadium in Belo Horizonte guaranteed the defending champion an insurmountable lead over second-place Sao Paulo, which defeated Santos 1-0 in Cuiaba to remain seven points behind with only six to be won. Cruzeiro is the first team to win consecutive titles since Sao Paulo won three in a row from 2006-08. Nepal bus crash death toll reaches 47 Associated Press
KATMANDU — Rescuers recovered 42 more bodies from the wreckage of a bus that plunged into a river in west Nepal raising the confirmed death toll to 47, police said Monday. Police said the bodies were recovered after the bus wreckage was pulled to the bank of the river on Sunday. The bus crashed Thursday into the Bheri river about 400 kilometers (250 miles) west of the capital, Katmandu, but it took days for rescuers to pull the wreckage out of the river. Five bodies were recovered earlier while 10 other people on board the bus were able to swim to safety. The bus was speeding on a narrow mountain road and plunged into the river when it tried to avoid crashing into a tractor. It took hours for rescuers to reach the rural road and divers struggled in the freezing water to pull out the wreckage. Accidents in the Himalayan nation are often caused by poorly maintained vehicles and narrow roads.

But late Sunday Mujica released a statement on Uruguay’s presidential website backing away from the comment and saying that Mexico wasn’t a failed state. “The crude news that reaches us about the consequences of drug trafficking in countries like Guatemala, Honduras and now Mexico shout to us a lesson of true pain that could show us our
own futures,” the left-leaning leader said. JAKARTA - As a budget-saving measure, State-owned Enterprises Minister Rini Soemarno has instructed CEOs and directors of state-owned enterprises to hold meetings in their offices rather than in hotels. “Meetings must be held in the office. If there are official visits scheduled, the CEOs and directors must stay in budget hotels. All state-owned enterprises’ activities must be efficient,” Rini noted on Monday. According to the minister, the policy was in accordance with the
government’s plan to maximize budget efficiency. The Ministry of State Employees and Bureaucracy Reform had earlier banned state employees from conducting meetings in hotels and reducing the number of unnecessary official visits. Minister of State Employees and Bureaucratic Reform Yuddy Chris-
nandi earlier stated that the new efficiency policy implemented on governmental bodies could save up to 20 percent of the state budget. The efficiency policy will come into effect from December 1, 2014, and is applicable to all employees in the ministries, provincial governments, and district governments.

JAKARTA - Nearly 25 years ago, a global promise was made to uphold and protect the rights of children at all costs to ensure their all-round growth and well-being, so that they achieve their maximum potential. The pledge was marked with the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) by the UN General Assembly on 20 November, 1989. The Children’s Rights Convention stipulates four general principles: non-discrimination, the child’s best interests, their right to life, survival, and development, and respect for their views. “We will do everything in our power to protect and promote their rights to survive and thrive, to learn and grow, to make their voices heard, and to reach their full potential,” according to the UN on the occasion of Universal Children’s Day 2014. So, 25 years following the adoption of the CRC, the big question still remains whether the world now is a better place for children. The United Nations Children’s Funds (UNICEF) clearly stated that the world community must do more to protect children, particularly in conflict-ridden areas such as in Iraq, Syria, South Sudan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria. Therefore, while observing Universal Children’s Day on Nov. 20, 2014, the UN called on all nations to recommit themselves to advancing the rights of every child, especially those who have been overlooked. “We cannot say that the rights of all children are fulfilled when, despite our progress, some 6.3 million children under 5 years of age died in 2013, mostly from preventable causes; while 168 million children aged 5 to 17 were engaged in child labor in 2012, and 11 percent of girls are married before they turn 15,” UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon noted in his message on Universal Children’s Day 2014. Ban emphasized that all children are entitled to their rights. “Every child has the right to survive and thrive, to be educated, to be free from violence and abuse, to participate, and to be heard,” he remarked. In Indonesia, Universal Children’s Day was also observed by an NGO called Childcare Advocacy Network, to reaffirm its commitment to protect and push for children’s rights in line with Presidential Decree Number 36/1996. The function was attended by representatives of the Jakarta Legal Aid (LBH Jakarta), the National Alliance of National Diversity in Unity, the Indonesia Conference on Religion and Peace, the Rehabilitation Foundation, and the Task Force for Protection of Children, among others. “Hundreds of children from across the country participated in the celebration. We encourage them to strengthen and motivate each other and play together,” Nia Sjarifudin, the coordinator of the National Children’s Day celebrations, noted on Nov. 22, 2014. The commemoration, which marked the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the CRC, was held to express solidarity towards forgotten and abandoned children who have become victims of the community or state policies. “(They included) disabled children, those who were displaced because of forced evictions, those from very poor families or the victims of discrimination based on their religion, such as Ahmadiyah, Syiah-Sampang, Animism, and GKI Yasmin-HKBP Filadelfia, and the children in refugee camps,” she stated. Nia Sjarifudin claimed that the system has not paid attention to these children who are not offered optimal protection for their growth. The coordinator hoped that the commemoration could help to protect the children who face discrimination in this country. The condition of children in Indonesia has been rather gloomy, given the fact that during the past four years, from 2010 to 2014, some 21,689,797 cases involving violence against children were reported in 34 provinces and 179 districts and cities. Of the reported cases, 62 percent of them were related to sexual abuse, while the rest comprised physical violence, neglect, abduction, economic exploitation, trafficking for commercial sexual exploitation, and custody disputes. The National Commission for Child Protection (Komnas PA) had received as many as 2,726 reports related to violence against children during the period between January and September, this year.

WASHINGTON - Climate change could undermine efforts to defeat extreme poverty around the globe, the World Bank warned Sunday. In a new report on the impact of global warming, the bank said sharp temperature rises would cut deeply into crop yields and water supplies in many areas and possibly set back efforts to bring populations out of poverty. “Climate change poses a substantial and escalating risk to development progress that could undermine global efforts to eliminate extreme poverty and promote shared prosperity,” the report said. “Without strong, early action, warming could exceed 1.5–2 degrees Celsius and the resulting impacts could significantly worsen intra- and intergenerational poverty in multiple
regions across the globe.” The bank said it is already likely that average temperatures will rise 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) from pre-industrial levels, based on the built-in impact of past and current greenhouse gas emissions. That means that extreme heat events, sea level rise and more frequent tropical cyclones may now be unavoidable. But without concerted action, the real danger is that the average global temperature increase could go to 4.0 degrees Celsius by the end of the century. The bank called that “a frightening world of increased risks and global
instability.” “Ending poverty, increasing global prosperity and reducing global inequality, already difficult, will be much harder with warming of two degrees Celsius, said World Bank President Jim Yong Kim. “But at four degrees, there is serious doubt whether these goals can be achieved at all.” The new report, “Turn Down the Heat: Confronting the New Climate Normal” focuses on the specific regional impacts of warming. Warming of two degrees could lower the yield of Brazil’s soybean crop by 70 percent. Andean cities would be threatened by melting gla-
ciers, and Caribbean and West Indian coastal communities could see their fish supplies dwindle. Two-degree warming could reduce yields of maize, wheat and grape crops in Macedonia by 50 percent. In northern Russia, it would mean substantial melting of the permafrost, causing a surge in damaging methane emissions, which would amplify the warming trend. The World Bank has set an ambitious target of eliminating extreme poverty around the world by 2030, and Kim says that can still be done if warming is limited to just two degrees. But temperatures have already increased 0.8 degree from the preindustrial mean, and the new study says it is likely already too late to forestall a 1.5-degree gain. The impacts of poverty exacer-
bated by climate change are wide and complex, the report shows. It will increase migration, though some people without means will be stuck with worse prospects in life. In the Middle East and North Africa, water resources and agriculture will be under severe threat from warming. And in turn, the impact could be political. The report cited two studies that linked the Arab Spring uprising to the drought impact of warming on food prices. Further climate change could add to security problems “by placing additional pressures on already scarce resources and by reinforcing such preexisting threats as political instability, poverty, and unemployment,” it said. “This creates the potential for social uprising and violent conflict.”

Bird attack is one of the factors that can kindle a crop failure of rice farmers in Bali. In harvest season, birds often compete to eat farmers’ grains. Unmitigatedly, they come in crowds with thousands of members. Now, farmers in Bali have a tradition to dismiss those naughty birds, namely by posting lelakut or scarecrow in the form of human figure to scare them. Scarecrows are usually installed when the milky rice stage occurred before harvest. They are installed on the rice field plot and embellished with colorful plastic tassels. Each is tied with a rope and connected to the main rope stretching from one end to another in the rice field. A more creative farmer sometimes makes movable scarecrows so that they can nod when blown by wind. Although their form and material are relatively simple, the scarecrow in rice field is just like a showcase of installation art. Its music is made by using cans filled with small gravels to make it vibrate. Sometimes it is accompanied by human cheers and shouts. However, mystically the scarecrow that has been given a mantra and special offering can serve as a catastrophe repellent. “Scarecrow can be made from various materials. If given a particular ritual and mantra, it can effectively resist black magic. Besides, it is also believed to keep the field from any disturbance of bad intention,” said I Wayan Sumajaya, Chief of Subak Mole, Tabanan. The man familiarly called Pan Padma said that farmers formerly believed if it was capable of keeping the rice field away from leak or black magic disturbance or those who envied to the rice field owner. According to this organic farmer, it was easy to make the scarecrow and the materials were easy to find. Typically, he made it from a dry woven straw and formed into a scarecrow. It can be made from straw with round shape and given palm fibers as the hair, or the head can also be made from empty coconut painted with human face. Depending on the creations of farmers, it can be made into a spooky face with big and protruding teeth, large eyes and so on. To color it, farmers usually use whiting (white) and charcoal (black). These colors are used to form the eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth and teeth to make it look creepy. Sometimes, it is also given a hat made from palm leaves or damaged bamboo steamer, so that it looks like a real human. I Ketut Murdana, a lecturer at the ISI Denpasar, admitted the scarecrow was an expression of farmers in the fields. However, its aesthetic value was not emphasized because they needed to have a scary and spooky figure. The inspiration was very simple, namely to make something that could look spooky and drive birds away. “It indicates the Hindu community in Bali as an artist. As evidence, farmers are able to assemble the scarecrow without having to learn in particular,” he said. Since the birds were then increasingly stubborn, it was equipped with sounds like the music. Though the materials were simple like can, bamboo and clapping hands, the sound generated could help repel the birds. “In the past, it was very simple, but now it is combined with modern materials, such as plastic, clothes and so on,” he said.

Street lighting out for two years

BANGLI - The street lighting installed along the Penelokan-Kintamani tourism line does not function properly. Since the past two years, the street lighting in the region has gone out so that Penelokan road section is dark. Such condition has occurred after the payment was handed over by the government to each village. Deputy Chairman of the Bangli House, Komang Carles, said on Sunday (Nov 23) that the street lighting along the Penelokan-Kintamani line had went out since two years ago, exactly after the issuance of policy that handed over the payment of electricity bill from Bangli government to each village. According to Carles, the policy issued by the regent in 2012 was actually pretty good for budget efficiency. However, on the one hand, another problem emerged because
some villages had unclear borders. “According to village authority whose area passed through by the path did not dare turn on the street lighting because their boundaries are unclear,” said Carles. Not only that, the budget used to pay the street lighting was also very minimal compared to the number of lamps installed. With such condition, many villages ultimately chose not to turn on the lamps at their village path. Considering that such condition
occurred since the past few years, Carles hoped the street lighting payment system could be returned to the government as before. The reason, such kind of problem had never occurred when the street lighting payment was made by local government. “To avoid any problem, the street lighting payment should be returned to the Secretariat of Bangli government,” he said. Previously, similar case was also revealed by Deputy Chairman of the Bangli House, Nyoman Basma.
He claimed to be agreed if the street lighting payment system was returned to the previous one. Moreover, the contract agreement with the state-owned power company (PLN) was not between the PLN and the village, but between the PLN and the Bangli government. PLN Bangli a total of 10 villages in Bangli were recorded to have street lighting arrears. The total arrears reached IDR 84,837,971 for the ten villages. Due to the arrears, the PLN had imposed firm sanction by dismantling the street lighting. Unfortunately, such firm action could not make the village having the arrears settle their obligations. INDIANAPOLIS — An American aid worker behead by Islamic State militants in Syria was praised for his humanitarian work Sunday during a memorial service attended by hundreds that included readings from the Bible and the Quran. Peter Kassig, who took the first name Abdul-Rahman after converting to Islam during captivity, was remembered as a good man, son, student and volunteer who dedicated himself to helping others and lived a short but full life. “We’re not here because of how he passed,” said Hazem Bata, executive director Islamic Society of North America in Plainfield. “We’re because of how he lived. We’re here because of the type of man he chose to be. We’re here because of his selflessness.” The 26-year-old man from Indianapolis was captured last year in eastern Syria while delivering relief supplies to refugees of Syria’s civil war. Kassig, a former U.S. Army ranger who had served in Iraq in 2007, had returned to the Mideast in 2012 and founded a relief organization to help war victims. His parents, Ed and Paula Kassig of Indianapolis, learned of their son’s capture last year, but did not disclose his captivity
while family and friends quietly worked to secure his release. In October, their son appeared in another video released by the Islamic State group that showed the beheading of a fellow aid worker, Britain’s Alan Henning. The militants vowed that Kassig would be next, leading his parents to plead publicly for mercy while stressing his humanitarian work and conversion to Islam. The Muslim community rallied around them, participating in prayer vigils and rallies urging his captors to follow the Quran’s teachings that prohibit Muslims from killing other Muslims. Speakers at Sunday’s 80minute service at Clowes Hall at Butler University, which Kassig briefly attended before moving to the Middle East, praised him for his humanitarian work and urged others to use his life as inspiration. “Our hearts broke with the news of not only his death, but the brutal and barbaric way in which it occurred,” said the Rev. Bill Hoopes, pastor of Epworth United Methodist Church in Indianapolis, which the Kassig family attends. “Many of us had hoped deeply that Peter would be the exception. It occurred when the two victims were in line at the Post Office of Payangan, Sunday (Nov 23) around 2:00 p.m. As a result, the two victims living at Lebah hamlet, Bukuan village, Payangan, should be undergoing a medical treatment at Sanjiwani Hospital, Gianyar. As provisional allegation, the stray bullet came from a military ceremony of police personnel at the village cemetery of Melinggih, Payangan
held at the same time. The incident started when I Wayan Sudana and I Nyoman Misi who came to Payangan Post Office to take their direct cash assistance (BLT) around two o’clock in the afternoon. Unexpectedly when queuing, both victims were screaming hysterically due to pain. “When queuing, Wayan Sudana who was in squatting position while Nyoman Misi was standing up suddenly cried out due to pain,” said a police source. covered in blood. Tunisia polls give ex-regime figure the edge

TUNIS — A veteran politician from the previous regime that ran on a platform of restoring the prestige of the state took the lead in Tunisia’s first free and fair presidential election Sunday, according to exit polls. But there will still likely be a runoff next month. Beji Caid Essebsi, 87, replicated the success of his Nida Tunis (Tunisia’s Call) party in last month’s legislative elections by taking 47 percent of the vote, with outgoing interim president Moncef Marzouki following with 27 percent, according to one polling company. Other polls gave similar figures, indicating that the two men will go head to head in a second round set for Dec. 28. Marzouki’s staffers contested the polls, maintaining their candidate had the plurality. Official results are expected in the coming days. The electoral commission said 60 percent of the 5.3 million registered voters participated. The vote appeared to be a choice between fears over security and the freedoms brought by their revolution, with Essebsi representing the stability of the old ways and Marzouki the fervor of the revolution. The North African country’s transition has remained on track in sharp contrast to the upheavals brought by the Arab Spring elsewhere in the region, including the brutal military coup in Egypt and the conflicts in
Syria, Yemen and Libya. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry congratulated Tunisians for the vote, calling the country’s transition “an inspiration to all those in the region and around the world.” It hasn’t been easy for Tunisia, however, and the nearly four years since the revolution have been marked by social unrest, terrorist attacks and high inflation that has voters punishing the moderate Islamists that first came to power. “The thing I’m worried most about for the future is terrorism. Right now, we don’t know who’s coming into the country, and this is a problem,” said Amira Judei, 21, who voted in the southern city of Kasserine, near the border with Algeria and a point of terrorist attacks. Voting hours in the rural regions along the border were reduced because of security fears. But Judei insisted that “the most important priority is unemployment.” Tunisia’s revolution began in areas such as Kasserine in the impoverished south, and the country’s 15 percent unemployment rate
nearly doubles when it comes to young people. Out of the nearly two dozen candidates for the presidency, Essebsi clearly captured people’s yearning for a return to stability after the disorder of the last few years. “He is a veteran politician with experience that can ensure security and stability,” said Mouldi Cherni, a driver living in Tunis’ Carthage suburb who voted for Essebsi. “The people are tired, life has grown expensive and Tunisians don’t even have enough to make an ojja,” the local omelet favored by the poor. The strikes, social unrest and occasional political assassinations have kept away foreign investment and the economy foundered after the revolution as an Islamist-led coalition government struggled with the country’s problems. In Kasserine, Deputy Mayor Ridha Abassi said his constituents had once voted Islamist but chose Essebsi’s Nida Tunis party in last month’s parliamentary elections — a choice that seems to have been replicated for the presidential contests.

CERN scientists discover 2 new subatomic particles

GENEVA — Scientists at the world’s largest smasher said Wednesday they have discovered two new subatomic particles never seen before that could widen our understanding of the universe. An experiment using the European Organization for Nuclear Research’s Large Hadron Collider found the new particles, which were predicted to exist, and are both baryons made from three quarks bound together by a strong force. In a statement last weekend,
officials at the lab known by its French acronym CERN announced the discovery, which could shed more light on how things work beyond the “Standard Model” physics theory explaining the basic building blocks of matter. The results also were submitted to the publication Physical Review
Letters. “Nature was kind and gave us two particles for the price of one,” said one of the CERN collaborators, Matthew Charles, of the CNRS’s LPNHE laboratory at Paris VI University. The new particles are more than six times as massive as the protons
that scientists have been deliberately crashing into each other in a 17-mile (27-kilometer) tunnel on the Swiss-French border near Geneva to see what they can discover about the makeup of the universe and its tiniest particles. The heavier weight of the two particles is due in part to their “spins” in opposite directions which is “an exciting result,” said Steven Blusk of Syracuse University in New York. CERN-based physicist Patrick Koppenburg said the study, using
data taken during 2011 and 2012, could help differentiate between Standard Model effects and “anything new or unexpected in the future.” Teams of thousands of CERN scientists also used the state-ofthe-art particle accelerator to discover the subatomic particle known as the Higgs boson, without which particles wouldn’t hold together and there would be no matter. the mysteries of a work’s age and authenticity by analyzing its underlying canvas or paper. Using high-resolution X-ray images, the 64-year-old academic can actually determine if paintings came from the same bolt of hand-loomed canvas, each of which has a varying

the unlikely cross-pollinating of traditional art history and contemporary computer science. “By mixing the two groups we’ve been able to do more than either group had been able to do separately studying the paintings,” Johnson said in a room full of Dutch paintings at Cornell’s Johnson Museum. “We’re not trying to replace the art historian, we’re trying to extend their reach.” Johnson is a tech whiz and an art lover — the rare person able to speak with authority about Rembrandt’s brush strokes and adaptive feedback systems theory. Although he didn’t make his first visit to an art museum until he was a student on fellowship in Germany, the rooms full of Rembrandts left him thunderstruck. Johnson melded the two worlds in 2007 with a stint as an adjunct research fellow at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. He began examining high-resolution X-ray images of the canvases used by the 19th century master. Eventually, Johnson and Rice University professor Don Johnson (no relation) developed digital “weave density maps” of canvases that added computational power to what had been a painstaking process that required scholars to study small samples with magnifying glasses. “It turns out with the eye, you make mistakes,” said Louis van Tilborgh, senior researcher at the Van Gogh museum. Van Tilborgh sees the weave maps as an important tool in the ongoing work of precisely dating and ordering all of Vincent Van Gogh’s paintings. The technique has also provided evidence to date Diego Velazquez’s “Sebastian de Morra.” A separate analysis of 24 Johannes Vermeer canvases supported the sometimes doubted attribution of one painting and provided fresh evidence to link two
paintings at the National Gallery in London as complementary works. “It’s one more technical tool in the box of studying pictures,” said Walter Liedtke, curator of European paintings at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan, who worked with Johnson on the Vermeers. “You take this added evidence and you join it with — in the case of the two Vermeers in London — pigment analysis, the iconography of the pictures, whether they were together in their history at earlier dates. “ Researchers have been conducting science-based analyses of artworks for some time. But it has become more common to use computers to analyze large amounts of digital data. It’s sometimes called computational art history and also includes assessing brushstrokes for distinctive patterns. Johnson in recent years has left the canvas to other researchers as he focuses on paper. He’s been analyzing the old-fashioned paper used by Rembrandt for his prints, which was made by laying pulp on screens. Scholars know the dates when Rembrandt etched the copper plates to make the prints, but they are often less sure when an individual print was made. Was it one of the initial prints or did it come years later after the artist’s death? Johnson is using high-resolution digital images of Rembrandt prints owned by Cornell’s museum to try to discern patterns that the screens impressed on the back of the prints. Separate prints cut from the same larger sheet of paper could be matched to provide the same sort of contextual information revealed by studying canvas. The details are different, but the idea of searching for useful patterns is the same, as is the idea of bridging the gap between art and tech. “My philosophy all along has been to convince both sides that this is worth doing and they should be talking to each other,” Johnson said.

In addition to persistent improvement made by the government, we also have different customer segments,” said the Chief of the Sudha Merta village market of Sidakarya, I Made Sarja. many residents are complaining because their water stock rushes to run out before getting water supply from the truck tank. TABANAN - Flowers are the main requirements for the Hindus in Bali to be used in the making of ritual oblations. Tabanan itself has a region that produces flowers namely Baturiti. The Head of Tabanan Agriculture and Horticulture Agency, Nyoman Budana, said that farmer groups in Baturiti planted local flowers such as chrysanthemum, anthurium, heliconia and marigold. The local flowers, according to Budana, were no less beautiful than imported flowers when used in the flower arrangement.

NEW YORK — “Mad Men” stars Christina Hendricks and John Slattery will be presenting a special award at the International Emmys Gala to the show’s creator and executive producer Matthew Weiner who’s preparing the final episodes of the 1960s Madison Avenue ad agency saga slated to air in spring 2015. Weiner will be receiving the honorary International Emmy Founders Award at Monday night’s ceremony at the Hilton New York. “’Mad Men’ has really come to define television for a whole generation of viewers,” said Bruce L. Paisner, president and CEO of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. “It’s an amazing global cultural phenomenon ... a force of nature as much as just a television series.” “Although these are stories in theory out of the ‘60s, part of the success of the show is that it’s a touchstone for how we think about ourselves and our own relationships even today.” The presentation to Weiner will be the centerpiece of the awards ceremony, hosted by British comedian Matt Lucas, creator of the comedy series “Little Britain,” a two-time International Emmy winner. A total of 40 nominees from 19 countries will be competing in 10 categories for International Emmys, established to honor excellence in TV programming outside the U.S. Britain had a leading six nominations, including best actor and actress nods for Stephen Dillane and Olivia Colman for their roles in popular crime dramas. Brazil had five nominations, including nods for three Globo TV productions: “The Mayor’s Wife” (comedy), “Precious Pearl” (tele-

She later received the first-ever Dick Clark Award for Excellence, presented by Diana Ross. “To the fans who went out and bought over a million copies of my last three albums, what you did by going out and investing in music and albums is you’re saying you believe in the same thing I believe in — that music is valuable and that music should be consumed in albums and albums should be consumed as art and appreciated,” said Swift, who recently removed her music from streaming service Spotify.

AMLAPURA - Virgin Beach tourist attraction at Perasi village, Karangasem, starts to be visited by many travelers. Averagely the daily visit of foreign travelers to the white sandy beach reaches 200 people. Such tourism development makes the economy of Perasi village increasingly grow. However, amidst the tourism development, the Karangasem government is unable to participate in the development at that location. Although being very popular, Virgin Beach also known as the white sandy beach has not been able to develop optimally. It has no facilities as those that can be found in other tourist attractions in Karangasem. Even, to get to the location, visitors should pass through a steep and damaged road access. I Gede Suparjana, 32, one of the residents around the Virgin Beach claimed that the tourist visit to the beach reached 400 to 500 people each
day. Such a large number of visitors inspired him to provide a parking lot. “On holidays, the number of visitors can reach thousands of people, so that the existing parking lot can be fully occupied. Therefore, I open a parking lot service,” he said when met on Sunday (Nov 23). Other than Gede Suparjana, many other residents also offered parking services at their own land. With the average daily income reaching IDR 300,000, Gede Suparjana admitted
to have immediately left his job as a security guard in order to focus on managing the parking space. “On regular day I can earn IDR 300,000 from the parking services. But on religious holidays like Galungan, I can get IDR 800,000 a day,” he added. Unfortunately, when the Virgin Beach has been visited by many travelers, even there is no participation of Karangasem government in developing the tourism in the region, especially related to access to the beach
being famous for its white sand. In order to be able to access the beach, customary villagers worked together to clear the land so that it could be reached by vehicles. However, the road access made by residents was only still limited to a dirt road. Limited financing owned by customary village became a constraint for residents to make asphalt road. When asked for confirmation about the Virgin Beach, the Head of Karangasem Culture and Tourism Agency, I Wayan Purna, admitted that his party could not touch the tourist attraction. Other than due to the presence of investors, the attraction was also owned by the two villages namely the Perasi and Bugbug.
This condition caused a number of facilities such as road access or other development assistance could not be provided by the Karangasem government. “Investors have come in for several times. In addition, the location is owned by customary villages so that we are hard to get in,” he explained when confirmed. Although the government did not play its role, many tourist accommodations were already established on the naturally formed beach. Several buildings such as cafeteria or sundeck had been prepared by local people. “Now, the location has been managed by customary village, where it has also provided sunbathing bench on the beach and made other businesses,” he explained.
