Indonesia belongs to the country whose development of HIV/AIDS epidemic rated the fastest in Asia. The number of HIV/AIDS case in Indonesia up to June 2011 reached 26,483 patients where the ratio of male to female is 3:1. Majority of the people living with HIV/AIDS are 20-29 years old or amount to12, 288 people. Meanwhile, Bali itself ranks third in Indonesia, in which from 1987 to April 2011, it was recorded 4,399 people suffering from HIV/AIDS. “The ratio of male to female sufferer is the same as the national ratio, namely 3:1 and most of them are from the age range of 20-29 years,â€? said Anak Agung Sagung Sawitri, denoting one of the speakers on the HIV/AIDS and Drug Workshop held on Tuesday (Nov 22) in the Medical Faculty of Udayana University. The national highest risk factor remained to be occupied by drug abuse. Sawitri added that in Bali the risk factor had begun to shift to sexual relationship. Transmission of HIV/AIDS through sexual contact in Bali reached 72.3 percent while through drug injection reached 17.6 percent. Many programs had been conducted to suppress the transmission of HIV/AIDS in the community. One of them was still rarely carried out, namely through cultural approach. According to Sawitri, the culture in a region was not only limited to a dance or musical instrument but also the LQĂ€XHQFH RI ORFDO OLIH DQG YDOXHV WKDW VKRXOG EH REH\HG “Why are men with HIV more than women in Indonesia? It had something to do with culture where in our country family gave more protection to women from going out at night. If found any girl going out at night, of course it would give negative impression,â€? said Sawitri. The culture in Indonesia also required men to try something new. Sometimes, the new thing was not good, so in this case man had greater potential to be affected by HIV/AIDS. By age, most of them belonged to 20-29 years old. Based on this, added Sawitri, it could be concluded the patients were infected when they remained in their teen or teenager. Why were they dominated by young age? It could be seen from our culture making it taboo for teenagers to talk about sex openly. As consequence, they tended to get incomplete information and have misperception on sex. Without being realized, actually there was a link between HIV, drug and culture. To that end, to make prevention efforts we had to consider the linkage of the three aspects. “We must pay attention to the culture. Do not adopt external theories and biomedical concepts. To maintain the prevention programs, we should pay attention to local culture,â€? said Sawitri. In Bali, prevention programs on HIV/AIDS could be undertaken through the hamlet system. “Bali has a banjar or hamlet system. Here, we can link the external concept to the one existing in Bali,â€? said Sawitri. Besides, it could also be undertaken by leaving a message through drama gong or puppet shadow play where one of them was the popular cenk blonk puppet shadow. Alternatively, the information could also be put through Balinese typical cartoons. Furthermore, Sawitri said that prevention of HIV/AIDS through traditional healers such as balian also needed to be done, where Balinese people also had a belief in traditional healing other than medical treatment. “So, the traditional healers can be given information about HIV/AIDS and they can pass them on to patients. Private institution only implemented popularity approach, while UNESCO put more emphasis on the approach of scientific studies by involving a number of scientists. “So, armed with scientific evidences, it was then made assessed strictly and continuously, not by vote via the Internet,� she said. According to her, the Indonesian cultural element proposed to be inscribed on the Urgent Safeguarding List (USL) was the Saman Dance from Gayo Lues district and surrounding areas in
Aceh Province. The intangible cultural heritage of Indonesia such as puppet, keris dagger, batik cloth and angklung music instrument had been inscribed on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage under the Convention 2003. “Other countries present in the meeting are also eagerly waiting for the decision of the Committee regarding the nominations they have proposed,� she said. She explained, to date, the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in need of Urgent Safeguarding consisting of 213 items of Intangible Cultural Heritage of 68 countries inscribed on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The Intangible Cultural Heritage included the practices and expressions transmitted from generation to generation such as the oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, rituals, festive events, knowledge
and practices concerning nature and the universe as well as traditional craftsmanship. “Only countries having ratified the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage can submit nominations requiring urgent safeguarding. To date, 137 countries have ratified the Convention of 2003,� she explained. Irina Bokova also explained there were four things to be done if the cultural heritage had been defined in the UNESCO list. Firstly, government and relevant stakeholders should have a real conservation program; secondly, do empowerment to local communities; thirdly, do promotion; and fourthly, establish governing agencies for cultural preservation. “In essence, preservation contains three elements, namely protection, maintenance and utilization,� she added. Medvedev: Russia may target missile defense sites Associated Press Writer
MOSCOW — Russia will deploy new missiles aimed at U.S. missile defense sites in Europe if Washington goes ahead with the planned shield despite Russia’s concerns, President Dmitry Medvedev said Wednesday. Russia will station missiles in its westernmost Kaliningrad region and other areas if Russia and NATO fail to reach a deal on the U.S.-led missile defense plans, he said in a tough statement that seemed to be aimed at rallying domestic support. Russia considers the plans for missile shields in Europe, including in Romania and Poland, to be a threat to its nuclear forces, but the Obama administration insists they are meant to fend off a potential threat from Iran. Moscow has agreed to consider NATO’s proposal last fall to cooperate on the missile shield, but the talks have been deadlocked over
how the system should operate. Russia has insisted that the system should be run jointly, which NATO has rejected. Medvedev also warned that Moscow may opt out of the New START arms control deal with the United States and halt other arms control talks if the U.S. proceeds. The Americans had hoped that the treaty would stimulate progress further ambitious arms control efforts, but such talks have stalled over tension on the missile plans. “The United States and its NATO partners as of now aren’t going to take our concerns about the European missile defense into account,” a stern Medvedev said, adding that if the alliance continues to “stonewall” Russia it will take retaliatory action. The U.S. plan calls for placing land- and sea-based radars and interceptors in European locations over the next decade and upgrading them over time.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Many sea border problems still unresolved : navy chief Antara
JAKARTA - Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Soeparno said Indonesia still had many unresolved sea border problems with other countries that had the potential of triggering conflicts. Although some border settlement agreements had been reached at the recent 19th ASEAN Summit, there were still other problems that had not yet been completely settled, Soeparno said in a prepared speech read out at by Navy Deputy Chief of Staff Vice Admiral Marsetio at a technical naval operations working meeting here Thursday. He said Indonesia`s strategic enviroment was subject to very
fast, complex and unpredictable developments at regional as well as national levels and this would only make its sea border problems with other countries more complicated. “Although some agreements at regional level were reached at the recent ASEAN summit, many sea border problems with neighboring countries still need to be resolved and continue to have the potential of causing conflicts,” he said.
Indonesia still had sea border problems with ten countries namely Timor Leste, Palau, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea and Australia, he said. Soeparno said besides sea border problems Indonesia also needed to pay attention to maritime security. “Illegal activities in the sea must be dealt with to uphold the Navy`s (TNI AL) existence as the enforcer of national territorial sovereignty and martime security guard,” he said. Therefore, he said, all elements of the navy had to remain alert and increase their professionalism
as part of the state`s defense apparatus. He said the TNI AL would continue conducting operations in border regions in the framework of safeguarding the country`s sovereignty and enforcing its maritime laws. “The quality and quantity of operations must be increased as part of the implementation of TNI AL`s responsibility in safeguarding national sovereignty and ensuring security for all Indonesian people as well as users of Indonesian waters against any violence, navigational danger and law violations,” he said.
The meeting is a forum of discussion for the evaluation of operations that have been carried out to see their problems and solutions. “Operations plan must be made with regard to development in the strategic enviroment and supported by readiness of all elements involved, logistics and professionalism,” he said. XL seeking to sell 7,000 BTS IBP
JAKARTA - Cellular phone operator PT XL Axiata Tbk is looking into the possibility of selling 7,000 of its base transceiver stations (BTS) for Rp14 trillion to Rp15 trillion. “We are still exploring the possibility of selling 7,000 (base transceiver) stations to investors,” XL President Director Hasnul Suhaimi said after addressing a seminar themed “Enduring and Growing amid Global Economic Turbulence by Excellent
Performance” here on Wednesday. To sell the 7,000 BTS, this publicly listed company had appointed Goldman Sachs as an arranger. However, he stopped short of revealing the investors who would buy the BTS. “Let`s wait....We are in the process of exploring (the possibility of selling them),” he said. XL tried to sell 7,000 BTS in 2009 but to no avail. He said XL intended to sell the BTS because it would focus on its business and would no longer think
of managing them on its own. To date, XL has 9,000-10,000 BTS nationwide. The contribution of BTS rent to the company`s revenues was relatively small reaching 4 percent of the overall income, he said. He said the company had set no date to complete the corporate action. “We have set no date to complete it. To be sure, we will continue to explore the possibility of selling them,” he said.
JAKARTA - Papua Acting Governor Syamsul Arief Rivai has denied allegations the province`s special autonomy had failed to bring progress for its people. “Papua`s special autonomy has not failed,” he said here citing data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) showing improvements in Papua`s economic conditions in past ten years and a district reduction in the region`s poverty level. “I believe in the statistical data because BPS is an official agency assigned to give standard measurements. So, what is the basis used by those who say that the implementation of the special autonomy law in Papua has failed,” he said. He said BPS had sent workers to the villages to collect data and therefore the government would stick to those data as its reference. There were indicators and operations that had been used to make decisions with regard to welfare improvements. For that purpose the government would only use accurate data as its reference, he said. “The government will not refer to unclear information collected through monitoring from afar. To make a conclusion on welfare improvement there are indicators and certain operations that have to be used. If there are other data for comparison let us sit and see how they have been collected,” he said. He said to collect accurate data the government had set up a Development Data Forum which was launched on Wednesday. He said all units of regional apparatus (SKPD) had to conduct coordination and synchronization of basic development data to build common perception and data for use as a basis for development planning, implementation, supervision and control. He said SKPDs also had to make communication breakthroughs and coordination the management of data vertically with districtlevel SKPDs and ministries concerned to create integration in the management and updating of data. “It is hoped the data forum will open the minds and hearts of all administrators so that every plan is based on data,” he said. Rivai hoped with the data forum all key problems and challenges could be solved and all parties could work better for the people. “I believe we still have strong foundation for starting to materialize the ideal of a new Papua which is peaceful, secure, just and prosperous,” he said.

said. He said the imposition of the common visa would enable a person to enter all countries in the region with a visa issued by one of the countries.
“Yet, the imposition of a common visa will correct slightly the growth in the use of visa on arrival,” he said. But Wijaya is of the view that the implementation of the
common visa would benefit the tourism sector in Indonesia, particularly the Island of gods, Bali. In the meantime, Secretary General of the Indonesia Restaurant and Hotel Association (IRHA) for Bali Perry Markus said that the reduction of income from the visa on arrival as a result of the common visa
policy could be solved with a multiple effect that would be created by the increasing number of visitors. “We will maximize it,” Perry said. He said that the imposition of the common visa would increase boost the development of creative industry which has the potential to support the tourism industry.

A Tourism Village Relying on Fruit Trees SINCE about a year ago, the name of Sudaji Village in Sawan Subdistrict seemed to have been very well-known. However, the village turns so famous is not because of its green area or sustainable forests, but due to various legal and political issues. For instance, it related to corruption of the national land certification program (Prona) and the fuss between the Village Representative Agency (BPD) and a group of residents whose case has not been resolved so far. Fortunately, in the midst of such political upheaval, a group of residents has a noble determination to develop the potential of the village by declaring Sudaji Village as a tourism village. It was conducted on Friday (Nov 11). The declaration was attended by leaders of customary village and tourism businesspeople of the village. Present on that occasion was the Head of Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency, Putu Tastra Wijaya, who gave full support to Sudaji as a tourism village. Putu Tastra Wijaya said that Sudaji Village had met the requirement as a tourism village. However, he also hoped it could be supported seriously by the entire community because some villages declared as tourism village were unable to continue with the visit of tourists. “I think Sudaji has qualified as having the potential nature and culture,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Sudaji Tourism Village Committee, Gede Suharsana, explained the idea to make Sudaji a tourism village was inseparable from the desire of residents to conserve the nature, art and culture of Sudaji. As a matter of fact, Sudaji had abundant potential of nature and culture. Now, they just stayed to be preserved and promoted. Regarding the wealth of nature, Sudaji Village indeed realized the potential they had. Since long time ago, their ancestors indeed liked to cultivate many kinds of fruits plants, chiefly local fruits. Around 1960-1970s, the famous fruits of Sudaji were Malaysian mango and lanzone. After the hybrid seedlings of durian and rambutan came to Bali, residents of the village bordering with Suwug Village in the north and verdant hills in the south set to cultivate Acehnese rambutan and Bangkok durian. So, please do not be surprised if Sudaji has tens of thousands of fruit trees. From the existing data, at the end of 1998 were recorded 1,000 rambutan trees, 1,000 lanzone trees, 200 Malaysian mango trees, 200 mangosten trees, 5,000 coconut trees, 1,000 durian trees and 500 mango trees. (Pepes Jamur Kuping) Ingredients 100 gram cloud ear mushroom, soaked in hot water until soft, then drained 1 egg, beaten 125 ml medium thick coconut milk from Âź coconut banana leaves Spice Paste Ingredients: 10 red chilies 10 bird shit chilies (prik kii nuu) 7 small shallots 3 small cloves garlic 5 candlenuts 2 tomatoes 1 cm fresh galangal (langkuas) 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. palm sugar or brown sugar Directions Slice the mushroom in 1 cm lengths and mix together with the egg, santan and the spice paste blend. Devide the mixture among 20 packets made of banana leaves. Fold the ends of the packets and seal. Steam the packets for about 25 minutes until done. Remove and set aside. Broil the packets over medium heat until liquid has evaporated.
Sweet Eggplant Stew (Semur Terong) Ingredients 1 lb. eggplant 4 Tbs. vegetable oil 1 Tbs. shallots 1 clove garlic, sliced ½ cup water 1 Tbs. sweet soy sauce ½ tsp. pepper Ÿ tsp. nutmeg 1 tsp. vinegar ½ tsp. salt 1 tsp. sugar Directions Cut the unpeeled eggplant into ½-inch-thick slices, and then cut the slices in half. Fry lightly in 2 Tbs. of oil for 2 minutes, or until light brown and softened. Set aside. Stir fry the shallots and garlic in the remaining oil until light brown. Add the water, sweet aoy sauce, pepper, nutmeg, vinegar, salt and sugar. Let all of these ingredients cook for approximately 3 minutes to prepare the sauce. Cook the eggplant slices in the sauce for additional 2 minutes to distribute the avors. Shake the pan several times to mix but not mash the eggplant. Serve hot or at room temperature.

What was in the thoughts of the Italian surfer’s mind when he discovered and named this beach a great many years ago? Well, he surely named this beach perfectly to my imaginative delight. Have you ever been here? I’m sure you will ďŹ nd it as heavenly as I do‌ If you’re staying somewhere in the Kuta area, I will suggest that you rent a motorbike or a car. Although it is possible to travel by taxi, the problem the issue of ďŹ nding your way back without your own ride. It is not that easy to catch a cab from the beach itself. Also remember to prepare all that you need; sunscreen, a bathing suit, a surfboard, a nice book to read and a pair of sunglasses. Off you go then! Dreamland is on the south side of Bali, about 30 to 40 minutes from Kuta. There are 2 alternative ways to go to Dreamland. You can either go through the Jimbaran Bay area or pass through the Dwipayana University
(a well-known public university in Bali); both ways are easy to follow. If you do get lost, ask for directions to Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK). It’s a famous cultural park located in Bukit Unggasan, Jimbaran. Here you can ďŹ nd a 75 meter-high and 60-meter wide ďŹ gure of god Visnu, one of the Trimurti symbols in Hinduism. The status is made by I Nyoman Nuarta, and is now still unďŹ nished. When it is done, it will be taller than the Statue of Liberty in New York! About 15 minutes from GWK, you will ďŹ nd a big statue of Garuda (the symbol of Indonesia), on the right side of the road. That means you’re just a stone throw’s away from Dreamland Beach. Dreamland Beach is located on a big-deserted property, a failed Pecatu Graha development. You will probably have to pay about Rp 5000 for the entry. When you get to the end of the road, you will be on top of a cliff, with the big blue ocean’s sky in front of you. Look down! That’s Dreamland Beach‌ You have to walk a little then down
a path of stairs to reach the beach.. Once on the sand, you will ďŹ nd rented umbrellas and beach benches facing the beach. You can also order food and drinks from the local traditional cafĂŠs available all around the beach. The cafes might seem common and usual, but many of them actually serve European dishes which is out of the ordinary for this setting. Planning to spend the night? Some of the local cafes offer humble accommodations at a reasonable price (ranged between Rp 50,000 to Rp 200,000 per night). In the evening, enjoy the sunset whilst several tourists build a campďŹ re on the beach, or just play a light game of beach ball. As for me, I prefer swimming offshore and enjoy the sunset from there. There are not many activities to be done here at night. The electricity is turned off after 10 pm and thus candles are lit to chase away the deep darkness of the night. After having dinner, the best thing you can do is to read a book or have a draft of cold beer. Otherwise, you

can go upstairs to where most of the rooms are and enjoy the scenery. The moon’s reection dancing in a urry of lights on the ocean’s surface is simply breathtaking. During the peak season (July and December), some of the rooms on this oor will be more packed so at least you are not alone and will have company to chat with along with your own group
of friends. It is always interesting meeting other travelers and sharing experiences. When you ďŹ nally feel like sleeping, go back to your room and snuggle under the blanket. The lullaby of tides breaking on the shore is such a peaceful sound to sleep to. Being in Dreamland is like being in a dream you wish you will never wake up from.

NEW YORK - Stocks suffered a sixth straight day of losses on Wednesday as frustration over the euro zone’s debt crisis, coupled with weak Chinese factory data, further dented investor sentiment. A weak German bond sale sparked fears the debt crisis was even beginning to threaten Berlin, with the leaders of France and Germany still at odds over a longer-term structural solution. The poor demand for German government bonds showed that investors viewed investing in the euro zone as being too risky. ‘Idol’ producer: No major changes for new season Associated Press Writer
NEW YORK — “American Idol” executive producer Nigel Lythgoe says don’t expect any major changes when the hit Fox TV show returns in January after undergoing an extensive makeover last season. Lythgoe, who helped transform Britain’s “Pop Idol” into the American TV juggernaut in 2002, returned as executive producer last season to usher in the post-Simon Cowell era. That ended a two-year hiatus that allowed him to focus on “So You Think You Can Dance,” which he produces and helps judge. For the 10th “American Idol” season, Lythgoe introduced new judges, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler, to join holdover Randy Jackson. Veteran music producer Jimmy Iovine, chairman of Interscope-Geffen-A&M, was brought in as an in-house mentor for the contestants. All of them are back for Season 11, Lythgoe said.
“I think we made a lot of tweaks last year,” Lythgoe said. “I’m not sure that we want to make too many more tweaks this year.” Lythgoe said the most significant change introduced last year had nothing to do with the judges: It was a decision to avoid those fish-out-of-water moments that forced very talented singers to sing in styles that didn’t suit them. “The biggest change we made last year was to say, ‘OK, if you’re a country singer you can sing any of these genres in your country style,’” Lythgoe said. “’We’re not going to force you to do rock or anything you can’t do. You can take a Michael Jackson song and turn it country.’” That resulted in singers such as Casey Abrams and Haley Reinhart advancing much deeper into the competition than they might have in previous years. The two teenage finalists, Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina, were country singers.

The Minnesota congresswoman received a personal letter from NBC’s vice president for late night programming, Doug Vaughan, a day after she appeared on the show. As Bachmann walked onstage, the show’s band had played a snippet of a 1985 Fishbone song entitled “Lyin’ Ass B----.” Vaughan wrote that the incident was “not only unfortunate but also unacceptable,” Bachmann spokeswoman Alice Stewart told The Associated Press. She said Vaughn offered his sincerest apologies and said the band had been “severely reprimanded.” Fallon also apologized to Bachmann when they spoke earlier Wednesday, she said. He’d tweeted earlier, saying he was “so sorry about the intro mess.” “He was extremely nice and friendly and offered his apology, and she accepted it,” Stewart said, adding that

JOHANNESBURG — Imagine the savannas of South Africa’s flagship Kruger Park so choked with brush, viewing what game is left is nearly impossible. The Cape of Good Hope without penguins. The Karoo desert’s seasonal symphony of wildflowers silenced. Climate change could mean unthinkable loss for South Africa, which hosts talks on global warming that will bring government negotiators, scientists and lobbyists from around the world to the coastal city of Durban next week. Guy Midgley, the top climate change researcher at the South African National Biodiversity Institute, said evidence gleaned from decades of recording weather data, observing flora and fauna and conducting experiments makes it possible for scientists to “weave a tapestry of change.” Change is, of course, part of the natural world. But the implications
of so much change happening at once pose enormous questions, said Midgley, who has contributed to the authoritative reports of the United Nations’ Nobel Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. In the Karoo, for example, where plants found nowhere else in the world have adapted to long, dry summers and winter rainfall, the weather pattern is changing. Scientists have noted large die-offs linked to the stress of drought among one iconic Karoo denizen, the flowering quiver tree, a giant aloe that often is the only large plant visible across
large stretches of desert. Quiver trees attract tourists, and insects, birds and mammals eat their flowers. “Any change in climate is going to affect the flowers,” said Wendy Foden, a southern African plant specialist with the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Barend Erasmus, an ecologist at Johannesburg’s University of the Witwatersrand, worked on some of the first efforts to model how Africa might be affected by climate change. He led a 2001 study that raised the possibility that up to two-thirds of the species studied might disappear from Kruger National Park. Research done since has made Erasmus less fearful for Kruger’s animal population. But he predicts profound effects should a changing climate encourage the growth of thick shrubs, squeezing out zebra, antelope and cheetah.

MOSCOW — The European Space Agency has received the first signal from an unmanned Russian spacecraft bound for a moon of Mars since it got stuck in Earth’s orbit two weeks ago, officials said Wednesday, raising hope the mission might be saved. Russia’s space agency said an ESA tracking facility in Australia got the signal from the PhobosGround probe early Wednesday in the western city of Perth. ESA’s teams of flight dynamics technicians, who calculate the orbits, and the operational center staff, who actually send up the signal, had been helping to try to communicate with the Russian probe for the past 10 days, said Bernhard von Weyhe a spokesman for ESA, based at its operational headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany. Roscosmos said in a statement that Russian and European space
experts will coordinate further attempts to contact the probe. Weyhe said the next try would occur later Wednesday when the spacecraft is expected to pass over the satellite dishes in Australia. Weyhe said that technicians in Perth used a little side antenna rigged with a cone to send up a wide, but weak, signal — only 3 watts — to the probe. The strength resembled a signal that would be used to communicate with the craft once it reaches deep space, which is what it was programmed for. “We did it as if the probe was on Mars, not only 200 to 340 kilometers (125 to 210 miles) away from Earth,” Weyhe said. The $170 million craft became stranded in orbit after its thrusters failed to fire following the Nov. 9 launch to send it on its path to one of Mars’ two moons, Phobos. The initial contact raised hopes of preventing the probe from crashing back to Earth.

A New Zealand scientist was sentenced to home detention Thursday for helping his terminally ill mother to die in an act a judge said was motivated by “compassion and love”, rather than personal gain. Sean Davison, a South African-based forensic specialist, admitted helping his 85-year-old mother Patricia commit suicide in the South Island city of Dunedin in 2006 by giving her a drink laced with crushed morphine tablets. He originally faced up to 14 years’ jail when he was put on trial for attempted murder in the High
Court last month but agreed to plead guilty after prosecutors downgraded the charge to “counselling and procuring suicide”. High Court judge Christine French sentenced Davison to five months’ home detention, saying the 50-year-old knew he was committing a crime in helping his mother die but the offence was “at the lower end of the scale”. “Although in my view there was significant premeditation, you acted out of compassion and love and not for any personal gain,” French said. Davison’s mother had refused to eat in the weeks leading up to her death, hoping to speed up her demise, and French said she had
remained strong-willed to the last, pressuring her son to end her life. Outside the court, Davison said his case should never have been prosecuted and called for legal changes to allow voluntary euthanasia. “This trial was not about justice, it was about getting a conviction at all costs,” he told reporters. “I feel the law should be about humanity.” Davison was arrested in September 2010 but, in an unusual move, he was granted bail, allowing him to return to South Africa after he pledged to return to Dunedin for his trial, partially on the strength of a character reference from Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Didier Drogba had fired Chelsea ahead with a low drive three minutes into the second half but substitute Eren Derdiyok levelled with a far-post header in the 73rd minute. That was still looking a good result for Chelsea but they lost their concentration from a stoppage-time corner when Friedrich connected with a solid header. G e r m a n y ’s L e v e r k u s e n , who face Genk in their last group match in December, top the group on nine points, one ahead of Chelsea and Valencia and are guaranteed progress because of their record against both Chelsea and the Spaniards, who thrashed Genk 7-0 on Wednesday. them through while a score draw or defeat would see the Spaniards into the last 16. “It is always a bit lucky if you score in the last minute but we believed in it, we have a young team,� Leverkusen’s Ballack said after victory over his former club. “During the game I didn’t feel we believed that we could win the game. NEW YORK — Talks aimed at ending the NBA lockout have resumed, two people with knowledge of the situation said Wednesday, with a quick settlement necessary to start the season by Christmas. The discussions began quietly Tuesday and are expected to continue through the Thanksgiving holiday, the people told The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the talks were supposed to remain confidential. The talks between representatives of the owners and players are now centered on settling their lawsuits: The players filed an antitrust lawsuit against the league in Minnesota and the league filed a pre-emptive suit in New York, seeking to prove the lockout was legal. Neither side commented on the talks, first reported by Yahoo Sports, though the league said in a statement it “remains in favor of a negotiated resolution� to the lockout.
The news revived the hopes of saving the Christmas slate, when the league schedules some marquee matchups to kick off its national TV package. The NBA finals rematch between Dallas and Miami was to headline three games this season The league had wanted to open a 72-game schedule on Dec. 15, pushing the start of the playoffs and finals back a week, if players had agreed to the last offer. But players rejected the owners’ most recent proposal on Nov. 14, announcing instead they were disbanding the union to pave the way to sue the league. The plan now would be for 66 games if a resolution comes soon. The league played a 50-game schedule in 1998-99 during its last lockout, when a deal didn’t come until January, so there’s still hope of some games this season even if it doesn’t include Christmas. Commissioner David Stern has said it would take about 30 days from an agreement to the start of the regular season.

McLaren focused on Mercedes future McLaren insists that it is fully focused on a future with current partner Mercedes-Benz, despite recent speculation linking it with a switch to Honda. Although McLaren and MercedesBenz’s relationship has shifted from equity partners to customers in recent years, with the German car manufacturer’s primary efforts now on its own works team, there appears to be every intention for the relationship to continue. McLaren managing director Jonathan Neale told a Vodafone phone-in on Wednesday that talk of it working towards a Honda deal was incorrect, and that there is every intention of it continuing its tie-up with Mercedes-Benz. “That is all wide of the mark,” said Neale about the Honda speculation. “We are very

Brawn open to new deal for Schumacher MERCEDES GP boss Ross Brawn has not ruled out a new deal for Michael Schumacher after his current one expires.
