Pink’s ‘Beautiful Trauma’ tops Billboard, one of 2017’s biggest debuts
LOS ANGELES - Pop star Pink soared to the top of the U.S. Billboard 200 album chart on Monday with one of the year’s biggest album sales debut, beating out new albums from rapper Gucci Mane and rocker Beck. “Beautiful Trauma,” Pink’s seventh studio album, sold 408,000 album units in its first week. This comprised sales from albums and songs and streaming consumption, according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan. The strong first week sales is the biggest debut for a female artist this year and the fourth biggest album debut of 2017, coming in behind Kendrick Lamar’s “Damn.,” Drake’s
“More Life” and Ed Sheeran’s “Divide.” The Billboard 200 chart tallies units from album sales, song sales (10 songs equal one album) and streaming activity (1,500 streams equal one album). Gucci Mane’s “Mr. Davis” debuted at No. 2 with sales of 70,000 album units while Beck’s “Colors” opened at No. 3 with 46,000 album units. Singer-songwriter St. Vincent

NEW YORK - The celebrity chef Cat Cora on Monday sued the operator of the four-month-old Fatbird restaurant in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, saying it reneged on its agreement to pay her for the right to use her name, likeness and recipes. Cora, the first female Iron Chef on the Food Network’s “Iron Chef America,” said she had contracted in February with Fatbird Restaurant Group LLC and Fatbird I LLC for a 10 percent equity stake plus $400,000, but has not received her first four installment payments of $25,000 each. She also said the restaurant has operated in a “substandard manner,” receiving “numerous” negative reviews from diners and food critics, and offering menu items that she did not approve and which were inconsistent with its southern food concept. “Cora has received the brunt of the blame for the restaurant’s lackluster performance, which has caused, and continues to cause, irreparable injury to Cora’s brand, good will and reputation as a world class chef and restaurateur,” according to the complaint filed in state court in Manhattan. A man who identified himself by phone as Fatbird’s general manager declined to comment. Contact information for the restaurant’s lawyers was not immediately available. Cora said she revoked Fatbird’s right to use her name and likeness on Oct. 20. The lawsuit seeks an injunction against such use, plus at least $400,000 in damages and interest. “Cat expended a significant amount of time, effort, energy and expense on this project,” her lawyer Terrence Oved said in an emailed statement. “This suit seeks to recover for her what she was promised.” Two other Food Network stars have also made news recently in connection with New York City restaurants. AMLAPURA - The ongoing threat Mount Agung erupting that began over a month ago on September 22nd, has paralyzed Karangasem’s business sector. The turnover rate of small businesses is estimated to have dropped by 90 percent, causing many entrepreneurs to be facing bankruptcy as they are not able to pay interest on their bank loans.Facing such conditions Karangasem entrepreneurs decided to form the Small Entrepreneur Association of Karangasem (Hipkar) who met with the Regent of Karangasem, I Gusti Ayu Mas Sumatri, in her office along with the Head of Cooperative and SME Agency Gede Ngurah Yudiantara and Division Head of Economic Affairs Hadi Susila, on Monday (Oct. 23).
One small-business entrepreneur named Gusti Gariada, explained that Karangasem business owners need to be given dispensation by the banks so that they can delay payments of their loan interest for the next few months. The HIPKAR is asking the regent of Karangasem to facilitate this process with the banks. “Out turnover has dropped 90 percent. If we continue to pay interest to the bank, we will use up all our capital just paying the interest on our loans without any income. Our business will not be able to survive more that 2 or 3 months”, said the owner of Kumendel Restaurant. Another entrepreneur named Kadek Dwi Jayantha, conveyed that each entrepreneur has tried to coordinate with the bank individually, however the banks have responded saying that these businesses will only be
assisted and prioritized for credit amnesty once the warning status for Mount Agung has been in effect for one month and that loan payments are due.“We have received the same answer from the banks who say that no disaster has occurred. We have contacted the Finance Service Authority (OJK) who have the authority over all banks in this matter. Based on the experience of the eruption of Mount Merapi in Java, we hope that dispensation of interest payment can be applied to Karangasem with regards to the potential eruption of Mount Agung” said Dwi Jayantha. Regent of Karangasem I Gusti Ayu Mas Sumatri requested that both the Cooperative and SME Agency and the Division of Economic Affairs facilitate the interests of the small entrepreneur with OJK. Small business entrepreneurs in Karangasem she emphasized contribute to the growth of Karangasem’s economy by providing jobs and reviving Karangasem’s microeconomics.According to the Regent of Karangasem, small businessman can write to OJK through HIPMI or Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) Karangasem. The government is also ready to facilitate the request to respond immediately. Chairman of Kadin Karangasem, Ida Wayan Cakra, also claimed to be ready to help small businesses to correspond with the OJK of Bali Representative in Denpasar, to immediately provide solutions according to the initial coordination with the OJK. “We are requesting that we be allowed to forgo paying interest on our loans during this situation. TABANAN - Tabanan’s Tunjuk village has a traditional dance known as Leko that has been submitted to the Ministry of Education and Culture as a national intangible cultural heritage. Head of the Tabanan Culture Agency, I Gusti Ngurah Supanji has been following the process of determination since September and explained on Monday (Oct 23) that: “there has already been an agreement about the determination of this art form as an intangible heritage, now we are just waiting for the decree”, he said. Supanji further explained that Tabanan submitted three different traditional arts for recognition by the Ministry in 2017: Leko from Tunjuk Village, Mandolin from the sub-district of Pupuan and Mesuryak from Bongan Village.As head of the Tabanan Culture Agency, Supanji was summoned for the Leko Dance” he explained. National intangible cultural heritages can also be culinary specialties, performing arts, fabric patterns, heirlooms, building styles and healing methodes. In the futur, Tabana plans to
propose Tabanan’S culinary treasures such as gondo (gooseweed) vegetable and red rice, but studies need to be conducte first, so it may take some time.“Proposed heritages must be unique and distinctive to the district in question. This is meant to prevent this intangibleheritages from being claimed by other regions, to be duplicated by others (a kind of copyright), as well as a way to underline the fact that Tabanan has unique qualities”, explained Supanji. The Leko dance of Tunjuk village, Tabanan has experienced ups and downs over the years according to the times. IN 1957 after having almost dissappeared, Leko dance was brought back to life by dacners and gamelan players from Tujunk Kelod and has continued to flourish over the years.Leko is can performed for manusha yajna, (life passage ceremonies) or as entertainment. “Leko art is usually dedicated to people having paid a vow (offerings—Ed) or to display as entertainment”, said Supanji. The Ayodya Resort Bali was summoned to Jakarta to be recognized by the Indonesia’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ignasius Jonan, as a recipient of a 2017 Subroto Award. The awards, named in honor of Indonesia’s Minister of Mining and Energy from 19781988, was given on the 72nd anniversary of the founding of the Indonesian Ministry in charge of mining and mineral resources. Those called to receive Subroto Awards are individuals, groups, organizations and journalists who have demonstrated a commitment to advance the energy and mineral resources sector in Indonesia. Attending the 2017 award ceremony was Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Ignasius Jonan, former Minister for Mining and Energy Subroto, and the new Director General of Energy Rida Mulyana. Minister Ignasius Jonan told the audience in attendance in the Ballroom of the Djakarta Theatre Building that this was the first time the Subroto Award was given to heroes in the energy sector. “After much discussion, it was decided that this would be called the Subroto Awards to be commenced in 2017. I hope that Bapak (Subroto) will attend every year,” said Jonan.Minister Jonan said the theme for the 2017 awards would be “justice in energy.” This theme is in keeping with the direction provided by President Joko Widodo to follow the principles of 1945 State Constitution to unfailingly work to improve the quality of the people’s welfare. The awards were bestowed across a number of categories including national energy efficiency; good conservation practice while protecting worker’s health and welfare in the field of geothermal energy; energy innovation; safety in the oil and gas sector (Migas); and excellence in energy reporting. The Ayodya Bali Resort received the second prize in the sub-category of retrofitted energy-saving buildings, with first place going to Sumarecon
Plaza (PT Summarecon Agung) and third place to the Graha Merah Putih Telkom Building (PT Telkom Indonesia). The three winners were judged to have achieved a high level of energy efficiency and energy conservation in their occupancy of the buildings that house their operations. The Ayodya Resort Bali was judged to have successfully implemented an efficient ecomanagement system in operation since 2010. Focused at every level on sustainable energy practice the Resort’s green building practice offers natural ventilation and light through the use of large windows. Landscaping design favours large trees that provide natural shade and cooling for the hotel’s guests. Using LED and
energy saving lighting, while energy-saving key-cards reduce electrical consumption whenever a room is left unoccupied reduces electrical consumption. Policies are also in place to minimize the consumption of paper products, reduce and eliminate the use of non-recyclable plastics, and discourage food wastage. “I love Bella very, very much. She’s helpful ... she does a lot of things for me and I’m so happy she’s in my house,” said Richards. Except Bella isn’t like most animals. As well as being able to talk, Bella checks if Patricia has taken her medication, plays the rock ‘n’ roll music she likes and reassures her when she is feeling anxious. Because Bella is a digital pet that exists on a tablet. She was created by Care Coach, a social enterprise that is competing with traditional models of care for the elderly in terms of cost, flexibility and resources. In the United States, advances in healthcare and a public better informed about healthy lifestyles has lead to an increasingly aging population. One in five of the nation’s population will be 65 or older by 2030, according to a 2014 government report.
Richards’ welfare is managed by healthcare organisation Element Care, which has engaged Care Coach to provide the pets. Element is now looking to increase the 15 current users because of the benefits that have resulted. Not only has Richards’ wellbeing improved but the company has saved money on the cost of her care, it says. She was selected for the digital pet because of repeated visits to the hospital whilst suffering anxiety and a shortage of breath related to smoking. Richards had also suffered the loss of a family member which added to the anxiety, so was calling on therapists and care staff more often, partly for solace and partly for company. “Our highest success is some of these lonely individuals who just need a little bit of extra help and attention,” said Kendra Seavey, the project administrator for the initiative. The pet also provides 24-hour care, whereas the care centre she attends is only open during office hours Monday to Friday. Richards will now talk to the pet if she is short of breath. Bella will guide her through breathing exercises and play music to calm her down. This has prevented 13 hospital visits to the emergency department so far, Seavey said. SAN FRANCISCO - The launch of Alphabet Inc’s second-generation Google Pixel smartphones has been hampered by display screen problems and pricing and shipping issues, prompting the company to open an investigation and issue multiple apologies to customers. The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, which start at $649 and debuted in stores on Thursday, are the lynchpin of Google’s efforts to take on Apple Inc’s iPhone directly. Early Pixel 2 users have voiced frustration with mishaps, including a potentially serious problem with the screen. Google said on Sunday it is investigating whether graphics are burning into the display of the Pixel 2, following a report on the AndroidCentral blog detailing the issue after a week of use. Burn-in, which usually becomes a problem only after several years of activity, can make it difficult to see information on the display. Google likely would need to halt production if there is problem, said Ryan Reith, a mobile device analyst at research firm IDC. “We take all reports of issues very seriously, and our engineers investigate quickly,” Mario Queiroz, Google’s vice president for Pixel product management, said in an emailed statement to Reuters. “We will provide updates as soon as we have conclusive data.” The investigation follows

Buleleng Hospital handles case of conjoined twins
SINGARAJA — A birth case with conjoined twin deformity is currently handled by Buleleng Hospital. Two babies belonging to the couple Syamsudin, 48, and Asini, 39, residents of Alas Sari hamlet, Pacung, Tejakula, were born in conjoined twins condition on Friday (Oct. 20) around 17:00. The birth of the fifth baby was through Caesarean section. After the birth, both baby girls are conjoined twin on chest to abdomen. Both unnamed infants weigh 2.9 kilograms. In the meantime, in postpartum the doctors are still treating them in NICU of the Buleleng Hospital emergency room before being referred to Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar. Director of Buleleng Hospital, Gede Wiartana, accompanied by Deputy Director in charge of Medical Services Putu Sudarsana justified that the hospital is dealing with the birth of conjoined twins. Wiartana said that such birth case is rare and has high risks when further action is taken. Nevertheless, it has handled patients pursuant to the standard operating procedure (SOP). The patient was immediately referred to Sanglah Hospital. “The labor has been done through Caesarean section and before the birth it was suspected of being conjoined twins. After birth, their condition is stable and now still in preparation to be referred to Sanglah,” he said. According to him, the case of conjoined twin baby happens purely due to genetic factors. After 13 days of fertilization process, there is a failure of separation at the stage of metaphase. After the failed separation or can be called by the term of ovulation, the fetus continues to develop into conjoined twins. To follow up the case of conjoined twins, the next measure is performing a separation operation.
This operation can be done after the baby’s weight is declared eligible and their health condition is stable and meets some other medical requirements. “Further treatment is the operation. We consult with the doctors in Sanglah Hospital and it can be done a surgery. So, we make our preparation and the family of patients have agreed. Incubator has also been prepared,” he explained. In the meantime, Syamsudin, baby’s father admitted not to expect if the birth of his fourth child are conjoined twins. He submitted to the doctor at the hospital handling the birth of his babies. He is also ready with the doctor’s decision referring his babies to Sanglah Hospital, so the baby can be saved. “For the sake of children, if they must be referred I am always ready for the best,” he said. On the other hand, Syamsudin said that during pregnancy, his wife already checked her pregnancy regularly to midwife at her village. By the time of their birth, his wife got twice USG examination. During the examination, the doctor mentioned that she has twin babies. Unfortunately, the examining physician did not mention in details that his wife had conjoined twins. In addition, this man having profession as merchant claimed to have had an uneasy feeling before his wife gave birth to the babies. At that time, he suddenly got a whisper if his wife had conjoined twins. “Every 10 days, we have checked and never used drugs other than those given by the doctor. The first USG examination and the one before birth are not explained if our babies are conjoined twins. Police officers crack down on thuggery at two markets in Susut
BANGLI — Dozens of police officers from Bangli Police and Susut Police Station held a thuggery operation in Kayuambua Market and Animal Market in Susut on Monday (Oct. 23). These activities are held to keep safe and conducive condition in the community especially ahead of the Galungan and Kuningan.
The operations of thuggery in the two markets were led directly by Deputy Chief of Bangli Police, Pius X. Ferry Aceng Loda, accompanied by Division Head of Operations and unit chief. The operations carried out by dozens of police officers began at 05:00. It was implemented by combing the parking lot of the market and the Kayuambua Market. After that, it was resumed to Kayuambua Cattle Market. From the results of combing conducted by the officers, there was no action of thuggery or criminal
acts occurred in the two markets. Nevertheless, police officers continue to provide guidance to all visitors in order to always maintain the security and order. Deputy Chief of Bangli Police, Pius X. Ferry Aceng Loda, said the operation was carried out to follow up the orders of Bangli Police Chief, IGN Agung Panji Anom, regarding the thuggery operation and other criminal acts in the area of Bangli police station. This activity will continue to be implemented to suppress criminal action especially thuggery ahead of Galungan holiday. This activity is expected to maintain the favorable condition of Bangli region. Similar opinion was also conveyed by Chief of Susut Police, Ida Bagus Ketut Karyawan. KUALA LUMPUR - Handcuffed, wearing bulletproof vests and under heavily armed guard, the two women accused of murdering the half-brother of North Korea’s leader were pushed around a Malaysian airport in wheelchairs on Tuesday during a court visit to the crime scene. Indonesian Siti Aisyah, 25, and Doan Thi Huong, 28, a Vietnamese, are charged with murdering Kim Jong Nam by smearing his face with VX, a chemical nerve agent, at Kuala Lumpur’s budget international terminal on Feb. 13. Defence lawyers say the women thought they were involved in a prank for a reality TV show when they encountered a man at the airport and did not know they were handling poison. The two women were brought back to the scene as part of an entourage of court officials, led by trial judge Azmi Ariffin and accompanied by over 200 police officers and dozens of journalists, on a visit to retrace the events that unfolded before, during and after Kim Jong Nam’s death. Defence lawyers requested the visit after video recordings of the women on airport closed-circuit television were screened in court. Gooi Soon Seng, Siti Aisyah’s lawyer, said the visit was necessary to verify the surroundings and locations where the prosecution say the murder took place.

BEIJING - China’s ruling Communist Party enshrined President Xi Jinping’s political thought into its constitution on Tuesday, putting him in the same company as the founder of modern China, Mao Zedong, and cementing his power ahead of a second five-year term. A key Xi ally, top corruption fighter Wang Qishan, will not be on the new Politburo Standing Committee, the apex of power in China, to be revealed on Wednesday as he was not among those named on Tuesday to the 204-member Central Committee. Whether or not the powerful Wang would remain on the Standing Committee, which currently has seven members, despite being beyond the customary retirement age of 69, had been among the key questions to be answered at the week-long party congress, which ended on Tuesday. Wang could still assume another senior role over the next few months. As expected, the party unanimously passed an amendment to
include “Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era” as one of its guiding principles. The party will announce its new Standing Committee, headed by Xi, at around midday (0400 GMT) on Wednesday, culminating a twice-adecade leadership reshuffle. As expected, the amended constitution affirmed that Xi’s signature fight against corruption, which has ensnared more than 1.3 million officials, will continue. BUSINESS At Riyadh jamboree, Saudis may struggle to lure foreign funds in recession
RIYADH - With low oil prices and austerity pushing Saudi Arabia into recession, the government may struggle to persuade international business leaders this week to pour billions of dollars of badly needed investment into the kingdom. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the 32-year-old architect of reforms designed to end Saudi Arabia’s reliance on oil exports, will make a rare public address to hundreds of bankers, businessmen and government officials from around the world at a three-day conference starting on Tuesday. Arranged by Saudi Arabia’s main sovereign wealth fund, the $180 billion Public Investment Fund (PIF), the event is labelled the Future Investment Initiative - an effort to present the world’s top oil exporter as a leading global investment destination. Four thousand people have registered to attend the event at an opulent Riyadh conference centre, and the scheduled speakers control assets worth $22 trillion, the PIF estimates. In some ways, Prince Mohammed has a strong story to tell. He has taken politically brave steps, such as public sector pay cuts and the introduction of new taxes, to begin cutting a massive state budget deficit that totalled $98 billion in 2015. Officials hope a privatisation programme, including the sale of 5 percent of oil giant Saudi Aramco, will raise $300 billion. Riyadh is cutting red tape and removing barriers to investment; on Sunday, it said it would let strategic foreign investors own more than 10 percent of listed Saudi companies. The PIF, which once operated as
a sleepy holding company for stateowned enterprises, is being pressed into service to jump-start tens of billions of dollars of projects in non-oil sectors such as real estate development, recycling and technology. One of Prince Mohammed’s biggest reforms is last month’s decision to remove a ban on women driving. This could reshape Saudi society. India approves $32.4 billion state bank recapitalization plan

NEW DELHI - The Indian government approved on Tuesday a state bank recapitalization plan of 2.11 trillion rupees ($32.43 billion) over the next two years, in a bid to clean banks’ books and revive investment in a slowing economy. Of the planned sum, recapitalization bonds will account for 1.35 trillion rupees, while 760 billion rupees will come from budgetary support and equity issuance, said Rajiv Kumar, India’s financial services secretary. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley
said the recapitalisation of state banks would be followed by a series of reforms. He did not give details. While banks remain the main source of funding for India’s companies, the stubborn bad debt problem has eaten into bank profits and choked off new lending, especially to smaller firms, at a time when an economy that depends on them is stalling. Twenty one state-run banks account for more than two-thirds of India’s banking assets. But they also account for a bulk of the record 9.5 trillion Indian rupees
($145 billion) of soured loans. In addition to repairing their balance sheets, the banks also need billions of dollars in new capital to meet global Basel III banking rules, due to fully kick in by March 2019. Fitch Ratings estimates Indian banks will need $65 billion of additional capital by March 2019 to meet Basel III global banking rules. Moody’s expects the top 11 state lenders alone will need nearly $15 billion. The government has just $3 billion left in its budget for bank recapitalisation. (rtr)

Besakih Temple Sits at the Foot of Mount Agung

Mount Agung in Balinese language is also known as Giri To Langkir to express its majesty. Giri means ‘mountain,’ To means ‘person,’ while Langkir means ‘towering.’ R. Goris, a literary scholar, compares the word to meaning ‘person’ to the family of languages ??found in other places having almost identical spellings that indicate the original equation. For example, the people of Bugis, Makassar and Toraja mention the person with the word ‘tou’ or ‘tow,’ the Sasak people on Lombok Island say ‘tau,’ the Bima people on Sumbawa Island say ‘dou,’ while the Filipinos say ‘tawuw.’ The word Langkir in Sanskrit can also be interpreted as the Mahadev or Supreme God (Master Plan for the Besakih Temple Development). In the Sangkul Putih palm-leaf manuscript is mentioned: “… Kang um is the ring tolangkir Bhatara Pasupati Ngaran …” means: “… the deity abiding on Mount Agung is named Bhatara Pasupati …” The word Tolangkir is derived from the word to (tu) meaning ‘honorable’ and langkir meaning ‘stepping’ or ‘the glorified or honored mountain’ as the abode of (Lord) Hyang Pasupati most honored by Balinese people (Pasar Agung Temple development committee). Mount Agung is called Giri To Langkir because of its size and height, another word for explaining the Supreme. Considering the majesty of Mount Agung, it was then established the abode of Hyang Pasupati named Besakih Temple. Besakih Temple belongs to Sad Kahyangan (six main temples) of Bali. This temple consists of 86 groups of temples. This group is divided into 18 (eighteen) common temples, 4 Catur Lawa temples, 11 Padharman temples, 6 non-Padharman temples, 29 clan temples and 11 temples do not belong to the group. All groups of the temples were built in stages. They were estimated to be first built by King Wira Dalem Kesari Warmadewa (913 AD), and then continued by Sri Kesari Warmadewa whose wife is Sri Gunapriya Dharmapatni (1007 AD). Rapid development occurred during the administration of Dalem Waturenggong where Danghyang Nirartha and Empu Kuturan played great role (Nala, 1996: 1). Chronicle of Gunung Agung dated Çaka 11 noted the eruption in the same year and displacement of four mountains stated as Candra Sangkala or chronogram reading Rudhira Bumi. Rudhira and Bumi respectively means number 1 (one) so that Rudhira Bhumi means number 11 (eleven) or 89 AD. The Çaka Year 13 stated as chronogram of
Gni Bhudara: Gni means ‘number three’ and Bhudara means ‘one,’ so that in the Çaka 13 meaning 92 AD it is said to erupt again. At Besakih Temple, there is worship for gods namely; Kiduling Kreteg Temple where to worship Lord Brahma; Gelap Temple (Lord Ishvara), Ulun Kulkul Temple (Lord Mahadev), and Batumadeg Temple (Lord Vishnu). Penataran Agung Temple is located in the middle because it is considered the most distinguished. Here is where Hindu devotees say prayers every year in the ceremony known as Bhatara Turun Kabeh falling on full moon of the tenth month in Balinese calendar (April). Then, every ten years is held a ceremony known as Panca Wali Krama and most importantly is the ceremony held every 100 (one hundred) years, known as the Eka Dasa Rudra. When Did Mount Agung Erupt? In the chronicle of Mount Agung is mentioned that Mount Agung erupted for the second time in Çaka Year 70 or 148 AD, Friday (Sukra) Kliwon Wuku Tolu of the fifth month according to Balinese calendar. Meanwhile, in the crater of the Mount Agung was found a substance called Salodaka (sulfur). It is considered to have supernatural power by residents in Bali and used as a means of grandiose Hindu rituals. Then, Mount Agung erupted for the third time in Çaka 111 (one hundred eleven) with the chronogram

of Wak Çasih Wak where each word means number 1 (one) or 189 AD. At this time was held the first Eka Dasa Rudra at Besakih Temple. Later, the Eka Dasa Rudra was not performed for several times. The next Eka Dasa Rudra was held in 1963 AD precisely on March 18, 1963, falling on full moon of the tenth month (Balinese calendar), Sukra Pon Julungwangi Çaka 1885, but was then not cancelled. At that time (1963), a great eruption of Mount Agung happened and caused the Island of Bali to be in pitch black. According to traditional mythological sources, a figure named Sri Wira Dalem Kesari founding the Merajan Selonding approximately in 250 AD located in the west of Penataran Agung Temple, where the Selonding gamelan instrument is now stored. He is said to have repaired the Besakih Temple. The word Dalem is the title of a king in Bali. Thus, the meaning of Dalem Kesari is most likely the King Kesari Warmadewa who ruled around 917 AD. This is indicated by inscriptions at Puseh Penempahan Temple and Belanjong (Sanur). Among the inscriptions, only those at Belanjong that have the date or chronogram: Cara Wahni Murti. Cara means ‘the star’ and has number 5, Wahni means ‘fire’ number 3, murti means the body of Lord Shiva has number 8. Therefore, after being read from the rear, the whole chronogram shows Caka 835 or 913 AD. During the reign of Sri Udaya-
na, Besakih Temple also received great attention. This can be found in two inscriptions whose copy is now stored in Merajan Selonding and Gedung Sakti inscription in Selat (Karangasem). It has chronogram ‘Nawa Sangapit Lawang’ and ‘Lawang Apit Lawang.’ Both chronograms have the same meaning: nawa means 9, apit means 2 and lawang means 9 (symbol of 9 holes in human body). The whole chronogram becomes Caka Year 929 or 1007 AD. Since the year 1007 belongs to the era of Udayana Warmadewa, apparently the king paid enough attention to Besakih Temple. During the reign of the kings belonging to descendants of Sri Kresna Kepakisan, Besakih Temple received more special arrangement. This can be found in the palmleaf manuscript of Raja Purana Besakih that specifies the type of ceremony, name of shrine, land property, composition of the pangemong (supporting devotees) and well-organized ceremonial levels. Other than two inscriptions dating 1444 AD and 1454 AD that carry the inauguration of the autonomy of “Desa Hila-hila Hulundang Ing Besuki” it is also carried that outsiders as well as royal officers are not allowed to collect taxes in the region of Besakih Temple and the people of Besakih have duty to maintain Besakih Temple and the shrine of Sasuhunan Kidul. Such a condition continued until the conquest of the Klungkung kingdom by the Dutch in 1908. During the Dutch colonial era,
the Dutch government paid great attention to Besakih Temple as proved in 1918-1923 when natural disasters destroyed many buildings; the government held a massive restoration. Furthermore, after Indonesian got its independence, the local government of Bali handled the repair and ceremonies at Besakih Temple. In 1967 supervision and maintenance of Besakih Temple by the governor of Bali was submitted to the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) and was then mandated again to Prawartakan Besakih Foundation. This foundation then carried out the repairs to damages caused by natural disasters. Great attention of the Bali government along the district and municipal government across Bali is given to the improvements that continue until now. Other than the attention of customary and religious institutions through meetings of Sulinggih and Walaka, religious seminars and other meetings on the ceremonies at Besakih Temple should be carried out in accordance with the norms including the implementation of grandiose rituals held periodically such as the Eka Dasa Rudra in 1979 (Çaka 1900), Panca Walikrama in 1989 (Çaka 1910) and Candi Narmada at Batu Klotok, Panca Walikrama in Lake Batur and Tri Bhuana Ritual in 1993, Eka Bhuana Ritual in 1996 in the courtyard of Besakih Temple as a series of the Eka Dasa Rudra. Catalonia warns of civil disobedience as Madrid readies direct rule
MADRID - Catalonia said on Monday it was confident all officials including police would defy attempts by Madrid to enforce direct rule on the region in a dispute that is raising fears of unrest among Spain’s European allies. The Spanish government has invoked special constitutional powers to fire the regional government and force elections to counter an independence drive. A vote in the national Senate to implement direct rule is due on Friday. But leaders of the secessionist campaign said a referendum on Oct. 1, in which 43 percent of the electorate voted, gave them a mandate to claim independence from the rest of Spain. “It’s not that we will refuse (orders). It is not a personal decision. It is a seven million-person decision,” Catalonia’s foreign affairs chief Raul Romeva told BBC radio. Romeva was asked whether he believed all institutions, including the police, would follow orders from Catalan institutions rather than obey the Spanish government. “And from that perspective, I
have no doubt that all civil servants in Catalonia will keep following the instructions provided by the elected and legitimate institutions that we have right now in place (in Catalonia),” he said. Catalan authorities said about 90 percent of those who took part in the referendum on Oct. 1 voted for independence. But only 43 percent of the electorate and 1 in 3 Catalans participated, with most opponents of secession staying at home. Indonesia passes law to ban organisations deemed against its ideology
JAKARTA - Around 1,000 Indonesians, led by hardline Islamist groups, protested outside parliament on Tuesday as lawmakers approved a presidential decree banning any civil organisations deemed to go against the country’s secular state ideology. Tuesday’s approval puts into law a policy President Joko Widodo set in a decree in July. The policy was aimed at containing hardline groups who have cast a shadow over the long-standing reputation for religious tolerance in the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation.
“We have seen mass organisations that are against the Pancasila (state ideology) and have created social conflict,” said Arya Bima, a lawmaker in favour of the policy. “This law doesn’t impede freedom of organisation or assembly, it strengthens it.” In late 2016 and early this year, groups such as Hizb-ut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) and the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), which call for Islamic law to be imposed in Indonesia, led mass street rallies attacking Jakarta’s governor, a Christian, whom they accused of insulting Islam. Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, who in April lost an election to get a new term, was jailed one month
later after being convicted of blasphemy, in a court ruling widely criticised in Indonesia and overseas as unjust. The presidential decree Widodo signed in July ordered the disbanding of all organisations deemed to be in conflict with the secular state ideology. HTI, which seeks to establish an Islamic caliphate, was the first organisation to be disbanded under the policy. Pancasila or ‘five principles’ is Indonesia’s state ideology, which includes belief in god, the unity of the country, social justice and

Under the new law, anyone who “embraces, develops of spreads ideology that is in conflict with the (state ideology) Pancasila” can face imprisonment of six months to life, according to a copy of the draft law reviewed by Reuters. Rights activists and civil organisations have decried the move, saying it harks back to the era of authoritarian ruler Suharto, who demanded loyalty to Pancasila and took repressive
measures against some opponents. Opposition lawmaker Al Muzamil Yusuf said the new law could “violate democratic rights and remove checks and balances on the government”. During the protest outside parliament on Tuesday, around 5,200 police and military personnel stood guard around the complex in central Jakarta. MEXICO CITY - Indycar has ruled out using a head protection device similar to Formula One’s halo but a screen could yet be introduced some time next season, according to series chief executive Mark Miles. “It could be next year. It’s not going to be in March but it could be during the season,” he told reporters at the weekend’s U.S. Grand Prix in Austin, Texas -- a double-header with Sunday’s Mexican F1 race. The 2018 Indy car was presented at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in July without any device in place. However a prototype screen is being developed and could be tested on track before the end of the year. “We think greater head protection is important. We’re working on it. It won’t be a halo, it will be some form
of a windscreen,” said Miles. “We’re making real progress on something that won’t really alter the look of our car. Drivers will be able to see through it, over it. “Forget what each of us may think about it aesthetically or otherwise, it’s pretty clear that since we’re on ovals and they’re banked, the driver couldn’t see up through it (the halo). You’ve got to be able to see up,” added Miles. Formula One is due to introduce its halo cockpit protection system from next season after also testing transparent shield concepts. Unlike IndyCar, Formula One does not race on oval circuits. The ‘halo’, which is fixed at three points including a central pillar in front of the driver that supports a
protective loop above his head, has been criticised by some fans and drivers for its looks. It will also be used in Formula Two next year and other FIA-sanctioned junior series at later dates. The push for increased head protection has gathered urgency following the deaths in 2015 of British Indy Car driver Justin Wilson and French Formula One driver Jules Bianchi. Wilson died after being hit on the head by debris from another car while competing at Pennsylvania’s Pocono Raceway, while Bianchi suffered severe head injuries in the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix when his car hit a recovery tractor. MEXICO CITY - Indycar has ruled out using a head protection device similar to Formula One’s halo but a screen could yet be introduced some time next season, according to series chief executive Mark Miles. “It could be next year. It’s not going to be in March but it could be during the season,” he told reporters at the weekend’s U.S. Grand Prix in Austin, Texas -- a double-header with Sunday’s Mexican F1 race. The 2018 Indy car was presented at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in July without any device in place. However a prototype screen is being developed and could be tested on track before the end of the year. “We think greater head protection is important. We’re working on it. It won’t be a halo, it will be some form
of a windscreen,” said Miles. “We’re making real progress on something that won’t really alter the look of our car. Drivers will be able to see through it, over it. “Forget what each of us may think about it aesthetically or otherwise, it’s pretty clear that since we’re on ovals and they’re banked, the driver couldn’t see up through it (the halo). You’ve got to be able to see up,” added Miles. Formula One is due to introduce its halo cockpit protection system from next season after also testing transparent shield concepts. Unlike IndyCar, Formula One does not race on oval circuits. The ‘halo’, which is fixed at three points including a central pillar in front of the driver that supports a
protective loop above his head, has been criticised by some fans and drivers for its looks. It will also be used in Formula Two next year and other FIA-sanctioned junior series at later dates. The push for increased head protection has gathered urgency following the deaths in 2015 of British Indy Car driver Justin Wilson and French Formula One driver Jules Bianchi. Wilson died after being hit on the head by debris from another car while competing at Pennsylvania’s Pocono Raceway, while Bianchi suffered severe head injuries in the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix when his car hit a recovery tractor. WELLINGTON - New Zealand could become the first country in the Asia-Pacific region to legalise cannabis for personal use after an unlikely alliance of populist, centrist and leftist parties put drug policy immediately on the agenda of the incoming government. Recreational marijuana use is legal in several U.S. states and European nations including the Netherlands and Spain, but countries in the Asia-Pacific tend to have strict prohibitions. Australia recently introduced laws freeing up access to cannabis for medicinal use, but does not allow recreational use. Labour’s prime minister-designate Jacinda Ardern said on Tuesday she agreed with a Greens proposal for a referendum to legalise use of recreational cannabis. “We agreed that what we are doing now simply isn’t working, so we have said yes to having that referendum,” Ardern told reporters in Wellington. There is no timeframe for possible legalisation, which would represent the first major reform of drug laws since the 1970s, but would depend on the public first voting to back reforms. “Anything that helps shift New Zealand drug laws out of the dinosaur age is going to be a good thing,”
Ross Bell, executive director of the charitable NZ Drug Foundation, told Reuters. “Arguably it is better for the sustainability of the reform to have a broad church like we’ve got with this government, so that it is not just seen as some sort of fringe liberal policy,” Bell said in a telephone interview. Drug law reforms figured in talks to form New Zealand’s new government after a Sept. 23 election failed to yield a majority for either the governing National Party or opposition Labour, although neither major party had such a campaign plank. The centre-left Labour will govern with support from its new junior coalition member, the populist NZ First, which supports holding referendums on controversial issues. The Greens have offered “confidence and supply” and the diverse group of parties is already starting to deliver a melange of policies, from potential relaxation of drug laws to tighter immigration controls. Catalonia warns of civil disobedience as Madrid readies direct rule
MADRID - Catalonia said on Monday it was confident all officials including police would defy attempts by Madrid to enforce direct rule on the region in a dispute that is raising fears of unrest among Spain’s European allies. The Spanish government has invoked special constitutional powers to fire the regional government and force elections to counter an independence drive. A vote in the national Senate to implement direct rule is due on Friday. But leaders of the secessionist campaign said a referendum on Oct. 1, in which 43 percent of the electorate voted, gave them a mandate to claim independence from the rest of Spain. “It’s not that we will refuse (orders). It is not a personal decision. It is a seven million-person decision,” Catalonia’s foreign affairs chief Raul Romeva told BBC radio. Romeva was asked whether he believed all institutions, including the police, would follow orders from Catalan institutions rather than obey the Spanish government. “And from that perspective, I
have no doubt that all civil servants in Catalonia will keep following the instructions provided by the elected and legitimate institutions that we have right now in place (in Catalonia),” he said. Catalan authorities said about 90 percent of those who took part in the referendum on Oct. 1 voted for independence. But only 43 percent of the electorate and 1 in 3 Catalans participated, with most opponents of secession staying at home. The crisis over the wealthy Catalan region has raised fears among European countries of a spillover to other parts of the continent. Two wealthy regions of northern Italy voted overwhelmingly on Sunday for greater autonomy, though those referendums were held in line with the constitution and were not binding on Rome. Separatists are active in Belgium’s Flanders region, and France’s Corsica has long been home to a secessionist movement. Indonesia passes law to ban organisations deemed against its ideology
JAKARTA - Around 1,000 Indonesians, led by hardline Islamist groups, protested outside parliament on Tuesday as lawmakers approved a presidential decree banning any civil organisations deemed to go against the country’s secular state ideology. Tuesday’s approval puts into law a policy President Joko Widodo set in a decree in July. The policy was aimed at containing hardline groups who have cast a shadow over the long-standing reputation for religious tolerance in the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation.
“We have seen mass organisations that are against the Pancasila (state ideology) and have created social conflict,” said Arya Bima, a lawmaker in favour of the policy. “This law doesn’t impede freedom of organisation or assembly, it strengthens it.” In late 2016 and early this year, groups such as Hizb-ut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) and the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), which call for Islamic law to be imposed in Indonesia, led mass street rallies attacking Jakarta’s governor, a Christian, whom they accused of insulting Islam. Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, who in April lost an election to get a new term, was jailed one month
later after being convicted of blasphemy, in a court ruling widely criticised in Indonesia and overseas as unjust. The presidential decree Widodo signed in July ordered the disbanding of all organisations deemed to be in conflict with the secular state ideology. HTI, which seeks to establish an Islamic caliphate, was the first organisation to be disbanded under the policy. Pancasila or ‘five principles’ is Indonesia’s state ideology, which includes belief in god, the unity of the country, social justice and
democracy, and which enshrines religious diversity in an officially secular system. VIOLATION OF RIGHTS?
Under the new law, anyone who “embraces, develops of spreads ideology that is in conflict with the (state ideology) Pancasila” can face imprisonment of six months to life, according to a copy of the draft law reviewed by Reuters. Rights activists and civil organisations have decried the move, saying it harks back to the era of authoritarian ruler Suharto, who demanded loyalty to Pancasila and took repressive
measures against some opponents. Opposition lawmaker Al Muzamil Yusuf said the new law could “violate democratic rights and remove checks and balances on the government”. During the protest outside parliament on Tuesday, around 5,200 police and military personnel stood guard around the complex in central Jakarta. A hashtag supporting Widodo’s policy was a top trending topic on Indonesian Twitter. “This policy is not about (Widodo) or any political party, it’s about safeguarding the unity of the country,” said user @ Senopati. BUSINESS At Riyadh jamboree, Saudis may struggle to lure foreign funds in recession
RIYADH - With low oil prices and austerity pushing Saudi Arabia into recession, the government may struggle to persuade international business leaders this week to pour billions of dollars of badly needed investment into the kingdom. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the 32-year-old architect of reforms designed to end Saudi Arabia’s reliance on oil exports, will make a rare public address to hundreds of bankers, businessmen and government officials from around the world at a three-day conference starting on Tuesday. Arranged by Saudi Arabia’s main sovereign wealth fund, the $180 billion Public Investment Fund (PIF), the event is labelled the Future Investment Initiative - an effort to present the world’s top oil exporter as a leading global investment destination. Four thousand people have registered to attend the event at an opulent Riyadh conference centre, and the scheduled speakers control assets worth $22 trillion, the PIF estimates. In some ways, Prince Mohammed has a strong story to tell. He has taken politically brave steps, such as public sector pay cuts and the introduction of new taxes, to begin cutting a massive state budget deficit that totalled $98 billion in 2015. Officials hope a privatisation programme, including the sale of 5 percent of oil giant Saudi Aramco, will raise $300 billion. Riyadh is cutting red tape and removing barriers to investment; on Sunday, it said it would let strategic foreign investors own more than 10 percent of listed Saudi companies. The PIF, which once operated as
a sleepy holding company for stateowned enterprises, is being pressed into service to jump-start tens of billions of dollars of projects in non-oil sectors such as real estate development, recycling and technology. One of Prince Mohammed’s biggest reforms is last month’s decision to remove a ban on women driving. This could reshape Saudi society. Just removing the need for women to hire foreign chauffeurs could save Saudis billions of dollars. RESISTANCE TO REFORMS “A few years ago, when oil was high, we were a rich country but nothing was happening, nobody was interested,” a senior executive at a major Saudi investment firm told a meeting in Dubai last week. “Now we’re not as rich but foreign investors are more interested because of the opportunities that have been created.” Other aspects of the reforms are troubling, however. India approves $32.4 billion state bank recapitalization plan

NEW DELHI - The Indian government approved on Tuesday a state bank recapitalization plan of 2.11 trillion rupees ($32.43 billion) over the next two years, in a bid to clean banks’ books and revive investment in a slowing economy. Of the planned sum, recapitalization bonds will account for 1.35 trillion rupees, while 760 billion rupees will come from budgetary support and equity issuance, said Rajiv Kumar, India’s financial services secretary. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley
said the recapitalisation of state banks would be followed by a series of reforms. He did not give details. While banks remain the main source of funding for India’s companies, the stubborn bad debt problem has eaten into bank profits and choked off new lending, especially to smaller firms, at a time when an economy that depends on them is stalling. Twenty one state-run banks account for more than two-thirds of India’s banking assets. But they also account for a bulk of the record 9.5 trillion Indian rupees
($145 billion) of soured loans. In addition to repairing their balance sheets, the banks also need billions of dollars in new capital to meet global Basel III banking rules, due to fully kick in by March 2019. Fitch Ratings estimates Indian banks will need $65 billion of additional capital by March 2019 to meet Basel III global banking rules. Moody’s expects the top 11 state lenders alone will need nearly $15 billion. The government has just $3 billion left in its budget for bank recapitalisation. (rtr)

Besakih Temple Sits at the Foot of Mount Agung

Mount Agung in Balinese language is also known as Giri To Langkir to express its majesty. Giri means ‘mountain,’ To means ‘person,’ while Langkir means ‘towering.’ R. Goris, a literary scholar, compares the word to meaning ‘person’ to the family of languages ??found in other places having almost identical spellings that indicate the original equation. For example, the people of Bugis, Makassar and Toraja mention the person with the word ‘tou’ or ‘tow,’ the Sasak people on Lombok Island say ‘tau,’ the Bima people on Sumbawa Island say ‘dou,’ while the Filipinos say ‘tawuw.’ The word Langkir in Sanskrit can also be interpreted as the Mahadev or Supreme God (Master Plan for the Besakih Temple Development). In the Sangkul Putih palm-leaf manuscript is mentioned: “… Kang um is the ring tolangkir Bhatara Pasupati Ngaran …” means: “… the deity abiding on Mount Agung is named Bhatara Pasupati …” The word Tolangkir is derived from the word to (tu) meaning ‘honorable’ and langkir meaning ‘stepping’ or ‘the glorified or honored mountain’ as the abode of (Lord) Hyang Pasupati most honored by Balinese people (Pasar Agung Temple development committee). Mount Agung is called Giri To Langkir because of its size and height, another word for explaining the Supreme. Considering the majesty of Mount Agung, it was then established the abode of Hyang Pasupati named Besakih Temple. Besakih Temple belongs to Sad Kahyangan (six main temples) of Bali. This temple consists of 86 groups of temples. This group is divided into 18 (eighteen) common temples, 4 Catur Lawa temples, 11 Padharman temples, 6 non-Padharman temples, 29 clan temples and 11 temples do not belong to the group. All groups of the temples were built in stages. They were estimated to be first built by King Wira Dalem Kesari Warmadewa (913 AD), and then continued by Sri Kesari Warmadewa whose wife is Sri Gunapriya Dharmapatni (1007 AD). Rapid development occurred during the administration of Dalem Waturenggong where Danghyang Nirartha and Empu Kuturan played great role (Nala, 1996: 1). Chronicle of Gunung Agung dated Çaka 11 noted the eruption in the same year and displacement of four mountains stated as Candra Sangkala or chronogram reading Rudhira Bumi. Rudhira and Bumi respectively means number 1 (one) so that Rudhira Bhumi means number 11 (eleven) or 89 AD. The Çaka Year 13 stated as chronogram of
Gni Bhudara: Gni means ‘number three’ and Bhudara means ‘one,’ so that in the Çaka 13 meaning 92 AD it is said to erupt again. The eruption caused a tremendous earthquake accompanied by incessant heavy rains day and night for two months. At Besakih Temple, there is worship for gods namely; Kiduling Kreteg Temple where to worship Lord Brahma; Gelap Temple (Lord Ishvara), Ulun Kulkul Temple (Lord Mahadev), and Batumadeg Temple (Lord Vishnu). Penataran Agung Temple is located in the middle because it is considered the most distinguished. Here is where Hindu devotees say prayers every year in the ceremony known as Bhatara Turun Kabeh falling on full moon of the tenth month in Balinese calendar (April). Then, every ten years is held a ceremony known as Panca Wali Krama and most importantly is the ceremony held every 100 (one hundred) years, known as the Eka Dasa Rudra. When Did Mount Agung Erupt? In the chronicle of Mount Agung is mentioned that Mount Agung erupted for the second time in Çaka Year 70 or 148 AD, Friday (Sukra) Kliwon Wuku Tolu of the fifth month according to Balinese calendar. Meanwhile, in the crater of the Mount Agung was found a substance called Salodaka (sulfur). It is considered to have supernatural power by residents in Bali and used as a means of grandiose Hindu rituals. Then, Mount Agung erupted for the third time in Çaka 111 (one hundred eleven) with the chronogram

of Wak Çasih Wak where each word means number 1 (one) or 189 AD. At this time was held the first Eka Dasa Rudra at Besakih Temple. Later, the Eka Dasa Rudra was not performed for several times. The next Eka Dasa Rudra was held in 1963 AD precisely on March 18, 1963, falling on full moon of the tenth month (Balinese calendar), Sukra Pon Julungwangi Çaka 1885, but was then not cancelled. At that time (1963), a great eruption of Mount Agung happened and caused the Island of Bali to be in pitch black. According to traditional mythological sources, a figure named Sri Wira Dalem Kesari founding the Merajan Selonding approximately in 250 AD located in the west of Penataran Agung Temple, where the Selonding gamelan instrument is now stored. He is said to have repaired the Besakih Temple. The word Dalem is the title of a king in Bali. Thus, the meaning of Dalem Kesari is most likely the King Kesari Warmadewa who ruled around 917 AD. This is indicated by inscriptions at Puseh Penempahan Temple and Belanjong (Sanur). Among the inscriptions, only those at Belanjong that have the date or chronogram: Cara Wahni Murti. Cara means ‘the star’ and has number 5, Wahni means ‘fire’ number 3, murti means the body of Lord Shiva has number 8. Therefore, after being read from the rear, the whole chronogram shows Caka 835 or 913 AD. During the reign of Sri Udaya-
na, Besakih Temple also received great attention. This can be found in two inscriptions whose copy is now stored in Merajan Selonding and Gedung Sakti inscription in Selat (Karangasem). It has chronogram ‘Nawa Sangapit Lawang’ and ‘Lawang Apit Lawang.’ Both chronograms have the same meaning: nawa means 9, apit means 2 and lawang means 9 (symbol of 9 holes in human body). The whole chronogram becomes Caka Year 929 or 1007 AD. Since the year 1007 belongs to the era of Udayana Warmadewa, apparently the king paid enough attention to Besakih Temple. During the reign of the kings belonging to descendants of Sri Kresna Kepakisan, Besakih Temple received more special arrangement. This can be found in the palmleaf manuscript of Raja Purana Besakih that specifies the type of ceremony, name of shrine, land property, composition of the pangemong (supporting devotees) and well-organized ceremonial levels. Other than two inscriptions dating 1444 AD and 1454 AD that carry the inauguration of the autonomy of “Desa Hila-hila Hulundang Ing Besuki” it is also carried that outsiders as well as royal officers are not allowed to collect taxes in the region of Besakih Temple and the people of Besakih have duty to maintain Besakih Temple and the shrine of Sasuhunan Kidul. Such a condition continued until the conquest of the Klungkung kingdom by the Dutch in 1908. During the Dutch colonial era,
the Dutch government paid great attention to Besakih Temple as proved in 1918-1923 when natural disasters destroyed many buildings; the government held a massive restoration. Furthermore, after Indonesian got its independence, the local government of Bali handled the repair and ceremonies at Besakih Temple. In 1967 supervision and maintenance of Besakih Temple by the governor of Bali was submitted to the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) and was then mandated again to Prawartakan Besakih Foundation. This foundation then carried out the repairs to damages caused by natural disasters. Great attention of the Bali government along the district and municipal government across Bali is given to the improvements that continue until now. Other than the attention of customary and religious institutions through meetings of Sulinggih and Walaka, religious seminars and other meetings on the ceremonies at Besakih Temple should be carried out in accordance with the norms including the implementation of grandiose rituals held periodically such as the Eka Dasa Rudra in 1979 (Çaka 1900), Panca Walikrama in 1989 (Çaka 1910) and Candi Narmada at Batu Klotok, Panca Walikrama in Lake Batur and Tri Bhuana Ritual in 1993, Eka Bhuana Ritual in 1996 in the courtyard of Besakih Temple as a series of the Eka Dasa Rudra. Burn-in, which usually becomes a problem only after several years of activity, can make it difficult to see information on the display. Buleleng Hospital handles case of conjoined twins
SINGARAJA — A birth case with conjoined twin deformity is currently handled by Buleleng Hospital. Two babies belonging to the couple Syamsudin, 48, and Asini, 39, residents of Alas Sari hamlet, Pacung, Tejakula, were born in conjoined twins condition on Friday (Oct. 20) around 17:00. The birth of the fifth baby was through Caesarean section. After the birth, both baby girls are conjoined twin on chest to abdomen. Both unnamed infants weigh 2.9 kilograms. In the meantime, in postpartum the doctors are still treating them in NICU of the Buleleng Hospital emergency room before being referred to Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar. Director of Buleleng Hospital, Gede Wiartana, accompanied by Deputy Director in charge of Medical Services Putu Sudarsana justified that the hospital is dealing with the birth of conjoined twins. Wiartana said that such birth case is rare and has high risks when further action is taken. Nevertheless, it has handled patients pursuant to the standard operating procedure (SOP). The patient was immediately referred to Sanglah Hospital. “The labor has been done through Caesarean section and before the birth it was suspected of being conjoined twins. After birth, their condition is stable and now still in preparation to be referred to Sanglah,” he said. According to him, the case of conjoined twin baby happens purely due to genetic factors. After 13 days of fertilization process, there is a failure of separation at the stage of metaphase. After the failed separation or can be called by the term of ovulation, the fetus continues to develop into conjoined twins. To follow up the case of conjoined twins, the next measure is performing a separation operation.
This operation can be done after the baby’s weight is declared eligible and their health condition is stable and meets some other medical requirements. “Further treatment is the operation. We consult with the doctors in Sanglah Hospital and it can be done a surgery. So, we make our preparation and the family of patients have agreed. Incubator has also been prepared,” he explained. In the meantime, Syamsudin, baby’s father admitted not to expect if the birth of his fourth child are conjoined twins. He submitted to the doctor at the hospital handling the birth of his babies. He is also ready with the doctor’s decision referring his babies to Sanglah Hospital, so the baby can be saved. “For the sake of children, if they must be referred I am always ready for the best,” he said. On the other hand, Syamsudin said that during pregnancy, his wife already checked her pregnancy regularly to midwife at her village. By the time of their birth, his wife got twice USG examination. During the examination, the doctor mentioned that she has twin babies. Unfortunately, the examining physician did not mention in details that his wife had conjoined twins. In addition, this man having profession as merchant claimed to have had an uneasy feeling before his wife gave birth to the babies. At that time, he suddenly got a whisper if his wife had conjoined twins. “Every 10 days, we have checked and never used drugs other than those given by the doctor. The first USG examination and the one before birth are not explained if our babies are conjoined twins. At that time, there was a feeling that my babies are conjoined twins and indeed the condition is like that, so whatever they are we should still accept them,” he explained. (kmb38)
Police officers crack down on thuggery at two markets in Susut
BANGLI — Dozens of police officers from Bangli Police and Susut Police Station held a thuggery operation in Kayuambua Market and Animal Market in Susut on Monday (Oct. 23). These activities are held to keep safe and conducive condition in the community especially ahead of the Galungan and Kuningan.
The operations of thuggery in the two markets were led directly by Deputy Chief of Bangli Police, Pius X. Ferry Aceng Loda, accompanied by Division Head of Operations and unit chief. The options of stuffing include tuna, chicken, meat or mix. The outlet she opened in early 2017 is located at Alam Dewata Shopping Complex on Jalan Bedugul Dewata No.31 South Denpasar. Small booths are planned to be opened in other areas with a franchise system. Thus, everyone can become an entrepreneur. Adult people also like this food because it offers typical green condiment. With a small packing of yellow boxes, the happy rice is very simple to carry anywhere and presented in any event. Once upon a time, people thought the green condiment is a vegetable. “However, when consumed, it was very spicy,” she recalled. The spicy flavor is also combined with anchovies having become the typicality of her happy rice. Indonesian Siti Aisyah, 25, and Doan Thi Huong, 28, a Vietnamese, are charged with murdering Kim Jong Nam by smearing his face with VX, a chemical nerve agent, at Kuala Lumpur’s budget international terminal on Feb. 13. Defence lawyers say the women thought they were involved in a prank for a reality TV show when they encountered a man at the airport and did not know they were handling poison. The two women were brought back to the scene as part of an entourage of court officials, led by trial judge Azmi Ariffin and accompanied by over 200 police officers and dozens of journalists, on a visit to retrace the events that unfolded before, during and after Kim Jong Nam’s death. Defence lawyers requested the visit after video recordings of the women on airport closed-circuit television were screened in court. Gooi Soon Seng, Siti Aisyah’s lawyer, said the visit was necessary to verify the surroundings and locations where the prosecution say the murder took place.

BEIJING - China’s ruling Communist Party enshrined President Xi Jinping’s political thought into its constitution on Tuesday, putting him in the same company as the founder of modern China, Mao Zedong, and cementing his power ahead of a second five-year term. A key Xi ally, top corruption fighter Wang Qishan, will not be on the new Politburo Standing Committee, the apex of power in China, to be revealed on Wednesday as he was not among those named on Tuesday to the 204-member Central Committee. Whether or not the powerful Wang would remain on the Standing Committee, which currently has seven members, despite being beyond the customary retirement age of 69, had been among the key questions to be answered at the week-long party congress, which ended on Tuesday. Wang could still assume another senior role over the next few months. As expected, the party unanimously passed an amendment to
include “Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era” as one of its guiding principles. The party will announce its new Standing Committee, headed by Xi, at around midday (0400 GMT) on Wednesday, culminating a twice-adecade leadership reshuffle. As expected, the amended constitution affirmed that Xi’s signature fight against corruption, which has ensnared more than 1.3 million officials, will continue. Unexpectedly, Xi’s “Belt and Road” initiative, an ambitious programme to build infrastructure linking China with its neighbours and beyond, was also included in the party constitution. Also included was a commitment to supply-side industrial reforms, and giving play to the “decisive role” of market forces in resource allocation, a commitment Xi had made early in his first terms that many investors say he has failed to deliver on.
“The party exercises overall leadership over all areas of endeavour in every part of the country,” the party said in a statement reflecting Xi’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the party and its place in contemporary Chinese society. The turnover rate of small businesses is estimated to have dropped by 90 percent, causing many entrepreneurs to be facing bankruptcy as they are not able to pay interest on their bank loans.Facing such conditions Karangasem entrepreneurs decided to form the Small Entrepreneur Association of Karangasem (Hipkar) who met with the Regent of Karangasem, I Gusti Ayu Mas Sumatri, in her office along with the Head of Cooperative and SME Agency Gede Ngurah Yudiantara and Division Head of Economic Affairs Hadi Susila, on Monday (Oct. 23).
One small-business entrepreneur named Gusti Gariada, explained that Karangasem business owners need to be given dispensation by the banks so that they can delay payments of their loan interest for the next few months. The HIPKAR is asking the regent of Karangasem to facilitate this process with the banks. “Out turnover has dropped 90 percent. If we continue to pay interest to the bank, we will use up all our capital just paying the interest on our loans without any income. Our business will not be able to survive more that 2 or 3 months”, said the owner of Kumendel Restaurant. Another entrepreneur named Kadek Dwi Jayantha, conveyed that each entrepreneur has tried to coordinate with the bank individually, however the banks have responded saying that these businesses will only be
assisted and prioritized for credit amnesty once the warning status for Mount Agung has been in effect for one month and that loan payments are due.“We have received the same answer from the banks who say that no disaster has occurred. We have contacted the Finance Service Authority (OJK) who have the authority over all banks in this matter. Based on the experience of the eruption of Mount Merapi in Java, we hope that dispensation of interest payment can be applied to Karangasem with regards to the potential eruption of Mount Agung” said Dwi Jayantha. Regent of Karangasem I Gusti Ayu Mas Sumatri requested that both the Cooperative and SME Agency and the Division of Economic Affairs facilitate the interests of the small entrepreneur with OJK. Small business entrepreneurs in Karangasem she emphasized contribute to the growth of Karangasem’s economy by providing jobs and reviving Karangasem’s microeconomics.According to the Regent of Karangasem, small businessman can write to OJK through HIPMI or Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) Karangasem. The government is also ready to facilitate the request to respond immediately. TABANAN - Tabanan’s Tunjuk village has a traditional dance known as Leko that has been submitted to the Ministry of Education and Culture as a national intangible cultural heritage. Head of the Tabanan Culture Agency, I Gusti Ngurah Supanji has been following the process of determination since September and explained on Monday (Oct 23) that: “there has already been an agreement about the determination of this art form as an intangible heritage, now we are just waiting for the decree”, he said. Supanji further explained that Tabanan submitted three different traditional arts for recognition by the Ministry in 2017: Leko from Tunjuk Village, Mandolin from the sub-district of Pupuan and Mesuryak from Bongan Village.As head of the Tabanan Culture Agency, Supanji was summoned for the Leko Dance” he explained. National intangible cultural heritages can also be culinary specialties, performing arts, fabric patterns, heirlooms, building styles and healing methodes. In the futur, Tabana plans to
propose Tabanan’S culinary treasures such as gondo (gooseweed) vegetable and red rice, but studies need to be conducte first, so it may take some time.“Proposed heritages must be unique and distinctive to the district in question. This is meant to prevent this intangibleheritages from being claimed by other regions, to be duplicated by others (a kind of copyright), as well as a way to underline the fact that Tabanan has unique qualities”, explained Supanji. The Leko dance of Tunjuk village, Tabanan has experienced ups and downs over the years according to the times. Focused at every level on sustainable energy practice the Resort’s green building practice offers natural ventilation and light through the use of large windows. Landscaping design favours large trees that provide natural shade and cooling for the hotel’s guests. Using LED and
energy saving lighting, while energy-saving key-cards reduce electrical consumption whenever a room is left unoccupied reduces electrical consumption. Policies are also in place to minimize the consumption of paper products, reduce and eliminate the use of non-recyclable plastics, and discourage food wastage. A reverse osmosis system provides fresh water to the Resort that endeavours at every opportunity to reduce water consumption. At the core of the Ayodya Resort Bali’s commitment to sustainability and the environment is a high degree of “green – mindedness” among all members of the hotel’s team. The Ayodya Resort Bali was the only hotel in Bali recognized in the 2017 Subroto Awards.

Pink’s ‘Beautiful Trauma’ tops Billboard, one of 2017’s biggest debuts
LOS ANGELES - Pop star Pink soared to the top of the U.S. Billboard 200 album chart on Monday with one of the year’s biggest album sales debut, beating out new albums from rapper Gucci Mane and rocker Beck. “Beautiful Trauma,” Pink’s seventh studio album, sold 408,000 album units in its first week. This comprised sales from albums and songs and streaming consumption, according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan. The strong first week sales is the biggest debut for a female artist this year and the fourth biggest album debut of 2017, coming in behind Kendrick Lamar’s “Damn.,” Drake’s
“More Life” and Ed Sheeran’s “Divide.” The Billboard 200 chart tallies units from album sales, song sales (10 songs equal one album) and streaming activity (1,500 streams equal one album). Gucci Mane’s “Mr. Davis” debuted at No. 2 with sales of 70,000 album units while Beck’s “Colors” opened at No. 3 with 46,000 album units. Singer-songwriter St. Vincent

NEW YORK - The celebrity chef Cat Cora on Monday sued the operator of the four-month-old Fatbird restaurant in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, saying it reneged on its agreement to pay her for the right to use her name, likeness and recipes. Cora, the first female Iron Chef on the Food Network’s “Iron Chef America,” said she had contracted in February with Fatbird Restaurant Group LLC and Fatbird I LLC for a 10 percent equity stake plus $400,000, but has not received her first four installment payments of $25,000 each. She also said the restaurant has operated in a “substandard manner,” receiving “numerous” negative reviews from diners and food critics, and offering menu items that she did not approve and which were inconsistent with its southern food concept. “Cora has received the brunt of the blame for the restaurant’s lackluster performance, which has caused, and continues to cause, irreparable injury to Cora’s brand, good will and reputation as a world class chef and restaurateur,” according to the complaint filed in state court in Manhattan. A man who identified himself by phone as Fatbird’s general manager declined to comment. Contact information for the restaurant’s lawyers was not immediately available. Cora said she revoked Fatbird’s right to use her name and likeness on Oct. 20. The lawsuit seeks an injunction against such use, plus at least $400,000 in damages and interest. “Cat expended a significant amount of time, effort, energy and expense on this project,” her lawyer Terrence Oved said in an emailed statement. “This suit seeks to recover for her what she was promised.” Two other Food Network stars have also made news recently in connection with New York City restaurants. Ronaldo retains FIFA award for world’s best player LONDON - Real Madrid’s Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo was crowned the best soccer player in the world for the second year running at FIFA’s The Best awards gala on Monday. The four-time Ballon d’Or winner won a La Liga and Champions League double with the Madrid club this year, striking twice against Juventus in the European Cup final to help Real become the first team to retain the trophy in its current format.
