‘The Goldfinch’ is a tale of art and loss Associated Press Writer
This absorbing novel begins when an ordinary excursion to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City by 13-year-old Theo Decker and his mother erupts in a sudden, senseless act of violence. In the mayhem that follows, Decker’s mother is killed and he somehow picks up and walks away with a priceless piece of artwork from the 1600s, “The Goldfinch” by Carel Fabritius. The scene unfolds slowly in harrowing detail and sets in motion nearly every subsequent event in the novel. Suddenly motherless, Decker’s quiet life becomes tumultuous. He is taken in by his friend’s wealthy and kind but distant family, and later goes to live with his estranged, gambling-addicted father
and his cocktail waitress girlfriend on the semi-abandoned outskirts of Las Vegas. There he meets Boris, a charming but unhinged ex-pat with Ukrainian and Russian roots who becomes his best friend, introducing Decker to a larger world via both Russian novels and drugs. As he grows older, he continues to secretly protect the painting, both as a work of beauty he has grown to cherish and as the only link to life before the tragedy. Establishing himself as an
antiques dealer back in New York as an adult, Decker strives for a calm life, but soon Boris re-emerges and everything he thought was in his past comes back in full force to haunt him. Tartt, in her third novel after “The Secret History” and “The Little Friend,” paints the many different strata of life that Decker floats through with vivid detail, including the dissolute Vegas gambling scene, high-society Manhattan, the world of antique furniture dealing and shady underworld art dens. The author trains an acute eye on the moral ambiguity of all of her characters in “The Goldfinch”: Decker, for example, can be deeply sympathetic but also proves capable of shocking acts both unethical and violent.

NEW DELHI — Famed playback singer Manna Dey, who recorded nearly 4,000 songs and can be heard in scores of Bollywood films, died in a Bangalore hospital early Thursday. He was 94. Dey was hospitalized in May and was being treated for a kidney infection when his organs failed, said K. Vasuki, an official of the Narayana Institute of Cardiac Sciences. Dey’s deep voice and mastery in singing classical music-based songs
enthralled millions of music lovers. He started his singing career in 1942. He sang mainly in Hindi and Bengali languages and his peak period was 1953-1980. He also lent his voice to songs in several Indian regional languages — Bengali, Assamese, Gujrati and Malayalam. The White House, rattled by the latest exposure based on leaks from intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, said it is not now listening in on Merkel, but did not deny the possibility her communications may have been intercepted in the past. In the wake of Snowden’s ongoing revelations, several more key US countries have already complained about American electronic surveillance, and the White House is struggling to stem the diplomatic damage. A spokesman for Merkel, who has registered strong disapproval at US National Security Agency activities in the past, said his boss had called Obama after Germany received information that US intelligence may be spying on her mobile phone. Steffen Seibert said in a statement that Merkel “made clear that she unequivocally disapproves of such practices, should they be confirmed, and regards them as completely unacceptable”. She had demanded “an immediate and comprehensive explanation” from Washington, the statement said. “Among close friends and partners, as the Federal Republic of Germany and the US have been for decades, there should be no such monitoring of the communications of a head of government,” the statement added, indirectly citing Merkel’s comments to Obama.

The art market building owned by Mengwi customary village has not been operated. Even, the building having been completed about a year ago starts to look dormant. Until now, there is no certainty when the building will be operated. “The art market has been dormant long enough. The building was accomplished in 2012, but has not been in operation so far. It is said the management has not been handed over to customary village. It’s unclear why it has not been functioned so far,” said one of the Mengwi residents. Though being not too extensive, the art market is actually quite interesting because it applied the Balinese architectural style. This market place is also quite strategic situated approximately 30 meters from the west gate of Taman Ayun. However, since it has been too long empty, a few residents worry if the newly established building will even be damaged because it has not been taken care of properly.
When asking for confirmation about this matter to subdistrict head of Mengwi, Made Sudarcita, on Monday (Oct 21), he did not know exactly when the market started to be operated. So far, the customary village was still waiting for the handover of the market. According to him, the market was carried out by the working unit of Bali Province. Similar opinion was also expressed by Director of PD Pasar Badung, I Ketut Golak. He mentioned the Mengwi Art Market was not under the management of PD Pasar Badung. Even, he also admitted not to know about the owner and who would manage the market. “I really do not know, maybe it is owned by Mengwi customary village,” he said. (kmb25)
Health field, in fact, is inseparable from waste production. The institution of health service providers, either hospital, clinic or health center produces two kinds of waste, namely liquid and solid medical waste. If each type of waste is not recycled, it will kindle a threat to public health and environmental pollution. Before discharged into the environment, the solid medical waste must be managed first by burning it in incinerator equipment so that it turns to ashes. Unfortunately, the incinerator is only available in government-owned hospitals. On the other hand, Bali has at least 54 hospitals, 118 community health centers as well as more clinics and private practice doctor. Obviously, restricted number of incinerator is feared to cause the occurrence of medical solid waste disposal into the environment without prior process. Then, what about the effects of solid medical waste when disposed directly into the environment without prior process? According to Section Head of Wangaya Hospital Non-Medical Support, Made Dwi Sukenrini, accompanied by hospital sanitation staff Sofwatul Mufidah said that disposal of unprocessed solid medical waste into the environment was definitely hazardous, not only for people but also for the environment. According to Mufidah, if the solid medical waste consisting of syringes, infusion bags and other broken thermometers was discarded without processed, the first people afflicted by the impact was the rubbish collector. They might be punctured by syringes or other medical items. “The most hazardous is the puncture of syringe exposed to infection. Moreover, the syringe was formerly used for patient suffering infectious diseases such as HIV,” said Mufidah. If the solid waste was disposed directly into the environment without processed, it would endanger the public in the form of threats of infectious due to the wastes. “Another threat, people may be exposed to mercury contained in several solid waste such as thermometers or blood pressure measuring device,”
she said. For the environment, the unmanaged solid waste would pollute groundwater and air. On that account, it was very important for each health service institution to manage its solid waste before it was disposed into the environment. According to Sukenrini, for Wangaya Hospital, the solid medical waste was managed first in incinerator before discharged into the environment. Within two days, the Wangaya Hospital incinerated at least 200 kilograms of solid medical waste consisting of solid medical waste of Wangaya Hospital, community health centers in Denpasar and several other health institutions. Other than maintaining the security of solid medical waste disposal, the incinerator management also included preserving the incinerator exhaust gas threshold generated so that it was safe for the environment and local communities while spreading into the air. In order the smoke of the burning did not pollute the environment she said the authority of Wangaya Hospital made a threshold examination to the incinerator exhaust gas once in six months. “So far, the exhaust gas of the Wangaya incinerator is still below the threshold and does not get complaints from the surrounding community,” she said. Incinerator exhaust gas was one of the problems often protested by residents. It was revealed by Chairman of the Indonesia Hospital Association (Persi) of Bali, Wayan Sutarga. On that account, he suggested the government to build a unit of incinerator that could be used jointly by the health services, especially those having not owned an incinerator. “The construction should be safe and away from residential neighborhoods,” he said. Construction of the incinerator that could be used together, according to Sutarga, was very important considering the availability of incinerator in Bali was limited and did not cover all the health services in Bali. The body of I Made Suka Prabudita Wasesa, 26, has not been found after he was swept away by sea current under the Benoa toll bridge, Sunday (Oct 20). Allegedly, the angler slipped and fell while exploring the beams of toll bridge. Since the current was strong enough, the body of the victim having the address on Jalan Dewi Sri Gang Jeruk, Batubulan, Gianyar, immediately disappeared. As information, the victim with four friends was about to angle at the scene. They explored the beams beneath the toll bridge to find appropriate location for fishing. “Since the tide was low, they explored the pathway amidst the toll bridge beams. However, when arriving at fisherman base, approximately 500 meters from the Benoa Toll Gate, the victim fell,” the source said on Monday (Oct 21). Victim fell when he tried to cross from one
beam to another beam. Allegedly, the victim’s legs slipped so that he fell. Once fell, the victim’s body was immediately swept away and his friends attempted to help. However, their efforts seemed fruitless and the victim was not seen. The accident was then reported to police station and the officers of Bali Marine Police and National SAR Agency promptly came down to location to do a search. Marin Police Section Head of Bali Police, Nyoman Sukasena, said on Monday (Oct 21) the sea current at the scene was indeed strong enough when the tide was low. Even, the water reached a waist-deep and the current was very strong. According to a friend of Suka, Nyoman Suparta, 40, the victim slipped. “The location is indeed very hazardous due to strong currents. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Voila! Brooklyn backdrop suits Gaultier exhibit

NEW YORK — Jean Paul Gaultier can barely contain his enthusiasm to be in Brooklyn. Make that his enthusiasm for New York. And life, in general. In a single conversation, seemingly a single breath, he covers the Chrysler Building; the 1940s film “Falbalas” that started his love affair with fashion; his beloved grandmother who inspired his fascination with corsetry; and the Broadway production of “Nine” that reminded him of it. A joie de vivre oozes with each word. It leaves one wondering, is there anything Gaultier — he of the famous cone bras, tongue-in-cheek catwalks and rock-star collaborations — isn’t exploding to talk about? But back to Brooklyn. Until he arrived this week to christen the Brooklyn Museum exhibit “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk,” he had visited the now-hipster borough twice: once to a fish restaurant that was “very good,” he says, and once to visit the nightclub where John Travolta wore his sharp white suit in the 1977 movie “Saturday Night Fever.” “I’m so impressed with Brooklyn,” he says in his thick French accent and occasionally broken English, “and this museum is absolutely fabulous. Voila!” This is no static fashion exhibition with gowns behind glass. It seems there was no other way to put Gaultier’s 30-plus-year career on display than on mannequins that
cry, laugh and speak. They do it so realistically that passers-by surely will do a double take. They’ll probably drive the security guards crazy at night. Some of the outfits, including the “cancan” bustier dress lined with photo-printed legs that gives the illusion that an entire dance line is hiding under the full skirt, are on a revolving runway that aims to mimic the models on parade at a fashion show. “Fashion is not clothes on the hanger, it was always about dressing somebody. Somebody has to be inside,” the 61-year-old Gaultier says. Seeing the childhood teddy bear that he used as his first model, complete with its bra top and red lipstick, in the same space as the iconic concert costumes he created for Madonna, Beyonce and Kylie Minogue “is a privilege of age,” Gaultier says. “It’s a very strong sensation.” Yet, Gaultier wasn’t completely sold on a retrospective when ThierryMaxime Loriot, curator of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, presented the idea in 2010. “My god, at first I thought this was only for people that were dead, like a monument! I am not an artist like the painter or something like that, so I feel a little humbled. ... Friday night’s fashion show in La Paz also revived the corset and the traditional petticoat of indigenous Andean women, who are commonly called cholitas in Bolivian slang. “Our modeling isn’t what is common; our culture is different and respecting it, we want to show that the cholita can by sexy, beautiful and elegant,” said designer Rosario Aguilar of Promociones Rosario, which organized the fashion show with 25 Aymara models. Palm sugar (brown sugar) makers at Besan Village, Dawan, Klungkung, have difficulty to get raw materials or wine seepage of coconut tree. It happens because within the past few days, in Klungkung, particular at Besan, it always rains. Actually, before Galungan and Kuningan the demand for brown sugar (also called Balinese sugar) increases. The price rises as well. During rainy season, sugar makers only acquire a small amount of wine. “Similarly, we do not dare to climb coconut trees, because it is slippery,” said sugar maker from Dawan, Nengah Koyog, at his home. According to Koyog and his wife, Nengah Yasa, they would get much sap of coconut tree during dry season. Climbing the coconut tree was not too worrisome because the trunk was dry. On that account, every day the sugar maker could harvest wine for two times, in the morning and afternoon. However, during rainy season, they could only climb once. Even, it highly depended on the condition of coconut trees. In dry season, a tree could produce 2 liters of wine. “But, in rainy season it only produces a little, nearly 1 liter,” said Koyog.
However, the 65-year old man admitted if he no longer dared to climb because he was already old enough. Activity to slit into the bud of coconut tree for collecting its sap or wine had now been continued by his son, Nengah Sutarna. In normal condition, Koyog said, the wine obtained from nine coconut trees in his backyard reached up to 25 liters taken twice daily (morning and afternoon). Results of the wine seepage were directly boiled and could produce 4 kilogram of brown sugar. “Before Galungan and Kuningan, the price is rising. If previously was only IDR 13,000 per kilogram, now it reaches IDR 15,000 per kilogram,” said Koyog who also collected sugar product of the surrounding residents. Other than marketed in traditional markets across Klungkung, brown sugar produced by Besan Village was also sold to outside Klungkung such as Denpasar. Unfortunately, due to difficulty to get raw materials, this sweet sugar was tasted ‘bitter’ by the sugar makers. “I myself have a regular customer from Renon. In once delivery, it can reach hundreds of kilogram,” he said.

Moscow - The Russian government has dismissed the head of the consumer protection agency, a notorious official best known for waging apparent trade wars against the country’s neighbours. Gennady Onishchenko, 63, who had been at the helm of the consumer protection agency Rospotrebnadzor since 2004, has been relieved of his duties, the government said late Wednesday. Onishchenko has been appointed as an aide to Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, according to a government statement. His deputy Anna Popova was appointed his temporary replacement. Under Onishchenko, the consumer protection agency, which enforces sanitary norms, was widely seen as a tool to punish Russia’s neighbours for seeking closer ties with the West or other perceived transgressions. MADRID - Spain announced Thursday a dip in its towering unemployment rate in the latest sign that the eurozone’s fourth-largest economy is battling its way out of a long recession. The jobless rate eased for the second straight quarter to a still high 25.98 percent in the third quarter of 2013, a report by the National Statistics Institute showed. The news dovetailed with a Bank of Spain assessment the previous day that Spain had emerged from recession in the third quarter with timid 0.1-percent economic growth. That was enough to send world stock markets higher as investors hoped for a broader recovery in the eurozone after five years of economic crisis. The number of people out of work in Spain dipped by 72,800 to 5.9 million in the third quarter, lowering the unemployment rate from the previous quarter’s 26.26 percent. It was the second straight quarter showing a drop in the unemployment rate, which peaked at a staggering 27.16 percent in the first three months of 2013. Spain is still struggling to overcome the aftermath of a decade-long property bubble that imploded in 2008, throwing millions of people out of work, racking up huge debts for the government, banks and people, and plunging the economy into a double-dip recession. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s right-leaning government, which took power in December 2011, has enacted economic reforms and austerity policies so as to curb annual deficits and rein in the national debt. But the painful impact of the spending squeeze, high unemployment, and a slew of corruption scandals have sparked angry street protests. For young people, the employment news remains bleak with 54.39 percent of 16- to 24-year-olds out of work, according to the latest report. Every member of some 1.8 million Spanish households is out of work, it said. Rajoy’s government is promising better times ahead, however, forecasting an overall economic decline in Spain of 1.3 percent in 2013 and then a return to growth of 0.7 percent over 2014. It forecasts an unemployment rate of 26.6 percent this year and 25.9 percent in 2014. The International Monetary Fund has warned that Spain’s unemployment rate will stay above 25 percent until 2018 unless Rajoy’s government undertakes deeper labour market reforms. The positive data from Spain -- which was a focus of anxieties for the eurozone’s stability last year -- reflected signs of recovery in European countries hit by the financial crisis, such as Greece, Ireland and Portugal. France, the eurozone’s second-biggest economy, has confirmed that it exited recession in the second quarter. A recent estimate by statistics institutes in France, Germany and Italy forecast that the eurozone overall would return to timid growth of 0.1 percent in the third quarter.

WASHINGTON - Boeing raised its 2013 earnings forecast Wednesday after third-quarter profits soared, saying it would boost production of its flagship 787 Dreamliner aircraft. Net earnings totaled $1.16 billion for the July-September quarter, an increase of 12 percent from $1.03 billion in the same period in 2012, the US aerospace and defense giant said. Earnings per share came in at $1.51 compared with $1.35 a year ago. Adjusted earnings per share, excluding certain pension expenses, increased 16 percent to $1.80, well above Wall Street analysts’ average estimate of $1.55. Revenues also beat expectations, rising 11 percent to $22.13 billion, reflecting higher commercial airplane deliveries. “Consistently strong operating performance is driving higher earnings, revenue and cash flow as we deliver on our record backlog and return increased value to shareholders,” said Jim McNerney, Boeing’s chairman, president and chief executive. Boeing raised its 2013 core earnings outlook to a range of between $6.50 and $6.65 per share, from the prior estimate of $6.20-$6.40 range. It maintained its
revenue forecast of $83-86 billion. Investors cheered, pushing Boeing shares to new all-time highs despite an overall lower market. The Dow component’s stock closed 5.3 percent higher at $129.02, shy of its intraday high at $129.99. In the year to date, Boeing shares have spiked 67 percent, after trading steadily in the $70 range in 2012. Boeing said it expected to deliver 635 to 645 new commercial aircraft in the year, including more than sixty 787s, at an operating margin revised to above 10 percent, an increase of a half percentage point. The Chicago-based company, which employs more than 170,000 people in the US and in 70 countries, said it had third-quarter operating cash flow before voluntary pension contributions of $4.31 billion, up from $2.35 billion a year ago. booked during the quarter. Third-quarter profits from its Commercial Airplanes subsidiary soared 40 percent to $1.62 billion, while revenues rose 15 percent to $13.99 billion. Despite technical glitches that have plagued Boeing’s new 787 Dreamliner , the company reported “continued strong demand” for its cutting-edge plane, which entered service two years ago. The company said it planned to increase its 787 production rate for 2016 to 12 airplanes per month from 10, and would raise that 14 airplanes per month before the end of the decade. But McNerney, in a conference call with analysts, expressed dissatisfaction with the 787’s performance. “Improving dispatch reliability of the 787 is at the top of our priorities,” he said, referring to the ratio of the number of flights delayed because of technical problems to the total number of flights. Boeing booked 200 net aircraft orders in the third quarter. Deliveries accelerated to 170 airplanes from 149 a year ago, as the pace of 787 deliveries nearly doubled. The bus driver lost control of the vehicle before it fell about 30 meters (98 feet) into the ravine on a curvy rural road in Wang Nuea district in Lampang province on Wednesday, police Col. Somdet Tossaporn said. The driver was among 16 people injured. The travelers had visited the temple to make merit, a Buddhist ritual of performing good deeds or other acts. Most of those killed were women. Somdet said the driver is facing charges of causing deaths by reckless driving, which carry a maximum jail term of 10 years. Lampang is a mountainous area 600 kilometers (372 miles) north of Bangkok. Up to 26,000 people are killed in road accidents every year in Thailand, according to the Interior Ministry.

SYDNEY — A pilot trying to fight one of several raging Australian wildfires died when his plane crashed Thursday, in the second fatality resulting from the fires that have ripped through the nation’s most populous state over the past week. The 43-year-old man was the only person on board and was trying to drop water onto a blaze in extremely rugged terrain near Ulladulla, south of Sydney, when his plane went down, Rural Fire Service commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said. “He’s a husband with young children and we’re all acutely aware that there’s a family suffering ... because their dad hasn’t come home,” an emotional Fitzsimmons said, pausing to compose himself. “We’re also feeling for the firefighting community.” More than 100 wildfires have killed one resident and destroyed more than 200 homes in New South Wales state this month. In its report “Licence to Kill”, Greenpeace said that Singapore-based Wilmar, the world’s biggest palm oil processor, was sourcing its oil from illegally cleared land and destroying the habitat of critically endangered Sumatran tigers. “Until Wilmar commits to a no-deforestation policy, their trade of palm oil to big household brands... makes consumers unwitting accomplices in the extinction of Indonesia’s 400 remaining Sumatran tigers,” said head of Greenpeace’s Forest Campaign in Indonesia, Bustar Maitar. Wilmar supplies more than a third of the world’s palm oil, according to the company’s website, and Greenpeace said Wilmar’s oil can be found in Oreo cookies, Gillette shaving cream and Clearasil face wash, among an array of grocery items in more than 50 countries. The report accused Wilmar of continuing to source palm fruit from plantations on illegally cleared land within Sumatra island’s protected Tesso Nilo National Park, prime tiger habitat. It also called on Wilmar to take responsibility for a fire that hit the permit area of another of its suppliers in June, when blazes swept through Sumatra’s forests for weeks, covering Singapore and Malaysia in a blanket of hazardous smog.
Indonesian officials said most fires, which sent high levels of carbon into the atmosphere, were deliberately lit to clear forested land and grow palm oil. Wilmar denied suggestions its supplier had deliberately lit land-clearing fires, saying in a statement the blaze was on a plantation that was likely ignited by surrounding flames. “We are currently reviewing our business practices, including our sourcing policy, working with certain international supply chain experts,” Wilmar spokesperson Lim Li Chuen told AFP. The company said it had issued “a stern reminder to all staff” of its policy to only source palm fruit grown legally and that any supplier trying to sell illegally grown fruit would be “dropped altogether”. Greenpeace said that around one million hectares of tiger habitat had already been designated by the government for production purposes, urging Wilmar to protects forest that lies within its permit zones. A forest area designated to a Wilmar subsidiary for production is a crucial corridor for the tiger and other endangered animals to move from one part of the island to another in order to survive, Greenpeace said.
JAKARTA - Although the rainy season has just begun in Indonesia, parts of the country such as North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Jakarta, and Maluku have already witnessed floods. Every year, several regions in the country get flooded during the rainy season, which usually begins in August or September. This year, the rains arrived a little late, but they have already wreaked havoc in parts of the country. Earlier in the week, continuous and heavy rainfall caused the Batang Timbalun River to overflow, leading to floods in three villages in the sub-district of Bungus Teluk Kabung, Padang, West Sumatra Province. A joint team of the Padang Disaster Mitigation Office and the Padang Red Cross are still evacuating the flood-hit who were residing near the river. At least 1,500 houses were submerged by the deluge in the sub-district. Floodwaters, reaching a height of up to 1.5 meters, inundated public facilities such as schools, roads, and mosques. The Padang municipal authorities have temporarily shut several schools in the sub-district due to flooding. The floods submerged 11 elementary schools, a junior high school, and a senior high school in East, West and South Bungus villages in the sub-district. “Floods have submerged a number of elementary, junior, and senior high schools in Bungus. So, for the time being, we are closing the schools,” said Mayor Fauzi Bahar last Saturday while visiting the flood-affected areas. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall also triggered floods in parts of North Sumatra Province - Tebing Tinggi District, Langkat District, Simalungun District, Pematang Siantar town, and Binjai.
In Tebing Tinggi, floods hit four subdistricts - Bajenis, Tebing Tinggi, Rambutan, and Padang Hulu, said Wahid Sitorus, the Head of the Tebing Tinggi disaster mitigation agency. At least 1,500 houses were inundated in Tebing Tinggi town after the Padang and Bahilang Rivers overflowed. About 6,000 people were forced to move to higher ground after floodwaters, reaching a height of up to 1.5 meters, submerged their houses. Local authorities set up emergency tents in Tanjung Marula Hilir, Rambutan Sub-district, and North Bandar, Tebing Tinggi. Tebing Tinggi Mayor Umar Zunaidi Hasibuan visited the flood-affected areas and ordered the distribution of relief aid, such as instant noodles and mineral water, for flood victims without delay. In Langkat District, floods triggered by continuous rains inundated 4,249 houses in the sub-districts of Stabat, Batang Serangan, Secanggang, Wampu, Tanjungpura, and Padang Tualang. Indonesia’s capital city of Jakarta is also bracing for floods, which are routine every year. Last year, 23 people died due to flooding and more than 100,000 families had to be evacuated after heavy rains struck Jakarta. The floods inflicted material losses of Rp1 trillion, or US$14 million. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) plans to hold a joint exercise to prepare for possible flooding in Jakarta province. “The joint exercise will help us prepare an evacuation process, determine the amount of logistics to be deployed, and decide on which areas we need to send humanitarian aid,” the spokesman for the agency, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said recently.

TOKYO — Japan is scaling down the planned main stadium for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, following an uproar from some prominent architects who think it’s too big and expensive. Hakubun Shimomura, the minister in charge of education, sports and science, told Parliament Wednesday the stadium designed by award-winning British-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid would cost 300 billion yen ($3 billion), and that was “too massive a budget.” The 80,000-seat, futuristic-looking stadium has been billed as costing 130 billion yen ($1.3 billion). The minister’s updated estimate
includes surrounding construction and infrastructure costs. “We need to rethink this to scale it down,” he said in response to a question from a ruling party lawmaker. “Urban planning must meet people’s needs.” The plans for the stadium were approved earlier this year by the city and central governments. Shimomura’s remarks signal a policy change.
He did not give specifics on how construction will be trimmed, but he stressed that the design concept will be kept. He also said the new stadium will still have all the basic features needed to host the Olympics. It is replacing the smaller 54,000-seat main stadium that was used for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki, a recipient of the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize, recently criticized the new stadium’s size and urged that it be reworked to “a more sustainable stadium.”
Renault says it warned Formula 1 rivals a long time ago that there could be a problem with the weight limit of next year’s cars, but its concerns were ignored. Amid a likelihood that an increase in the minimum weight of F1 cars from 642kg to 690kg will not be enough to make up for the heavier V6 turbo power units, there have been concerns that heavier drivers are going to be penalised next year. Renault F1’s deputy managing director Rob White says the French car manufacturer feared there was going to be a weight issue months ago but said rivals were adamant at the time that it would not be a problem. TOKYO — Japan is scaling down the planned main stadium for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, following an uproar from some prominent architects who think it’s too big and expensive. Hakubun Shimomura, the minister in charge of education, sports and science, told Parliament Wednesday the stadium designed by award-winning British-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid would cost 300 billion yen ($3 billion), and that was “too massive a budget.” The 80,000-seat, futuristic-looking stadium has been billed as costing 130 billion yen ($1.3 billion). The minister’s updated estimate
includes surrounding construction and infrastructure costs. “We need to rethink this to scale it down,” he said in response to a question from a ruling party lawmaker. “Urban planning must meet people’s needs.” The plans for the stadium were approved earlier this year by the city and central governments. Shimomura’s remarks signal a policy change.
He did not give specifics on how construction will be trimmed, but he stressed that the design concept will be kept. He also said the new stadium will still have all the basic features needed to host the Olympics. It is replacing the smaller 54,000-seat main stadium that was used for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki, a recipient of the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize, recently criticized the new stadium’s size and urged that it be reworked to “a more sustainable stadium.”
Renault says it warned Formula 1 rivals a long time ago that there could be a problem with the weight limit of next year’s cars, but its concerns were ignored. Amid a likelihood that an increase in the minimum weight of F1 cars from 642kg to 690kg will not be enough to make up for the heavier V6 turbo power units, there have been concerns that heavier drivers are going to be penalised next year. JAKARTA - Oreo cookies and Gillette shaving cream are among products driving the destruction of Indonesia’s forests, Greenpeace said Tuesday, accusing agri-giant Wilmar International of supplying “dirty palm oil” to make the grocery items. In its report “Licence to Kill”, Greenpeace said that Singapore-based Wilmar, the world’s biggest palm oil processor, was sourcing its oil from illegally cleared land and destroying the habitat of critically endangered Sumatran tigers. “Until Wilmar commits to a no-deforestation policy, their trade of palm oil to big household brands... makes consumers unwitting accomplices in the extinction of Indonesia’s 400 remaining Sumatran tigers,” said head of Greenpeace’s Forest Campaign in Indonesia, Bustar Maitar. Wilmar supplies more than a third of the world’s palm oil, according to the company’s website, and Greenpeace said Wilmar’s oil can be found in Oreo cookies, Gillette shaving cream and Clearasil face wash, among an array of grocery items in more than 50 countries. The report accused Wilmar of continuing to source palm fruit from plantations on illegally cleared land within Sumatra island’s protected Tesso Nilo National Park, prime tiger habitat. It also called on Wilmar to take responsibility for a fire that hit the permit area of another of its suppliers in June, when blazes swept through Sumatra’s forests for weeks, covering Singapore and Malaysia in a blanket of hazardous smog.
Indonesian officials said most fires, which sent high levels of carbon into the atmosphere, were deliberately lit to clear forested land and grow palm oil. Wilmar denied suggestions its supplier had deliberately lit land-clearing fires, saying in a statement the blaze was on a plantation that was likely ignited by surrounding flames. “We are currently reviewing our business practices, including our sourcing policy, working with certain international supply chain experts,” Wilmar spokesperson Lim Li Chuen told AFP. The company said it had issued “a stern reminder to all staff” of its policy to only source palm fruit grown legally and that any supplier trying to sell illegally grown fruit would be “dropped altogether”. Greenpeace said that around one million hectares of tiger habitat had already been designated by the government for production purposes, urging Wilmar to protects forest that lies within its permit zones. A forest area designated to a Wilmar subsidiary for production is a crucial corridor for the tiger and other endangered animals to move from one part of the island to another in order to survive, Greenpeace said.

Every year, several regions in the country get flooded during the rainy season, which usually begins in August or September. This year, the rains arrived a little late, but they have already wreaked havoc in parts of the country. Earlier in the week, continuous and heavy rainfall caused the Batang Timbalun River to overflow, leading to floods in three villages in the sub-district of Bungus Teluk Kabung, Padang, West Sumatra Province. A joint team of the Padang Disaster Mitigation Office and the Padang Red Cross are still evacuating the flood-hit who were residing near the river. At least 1,500 houses were submerged by the deluge in the sub-district. Floodwaters, reaching a height of up to 1.5 meters, inundated public facilities such as schools, roads, and mosques. The Padang municipal authorities have temporarily shut several schools in the sub-district due to flooding. The floods submerged 11 elementary schools, a junior high school, and a senior high school in East, West and South Bungus villages in the sub-district. “Floods have submerged a number of elementary, junior, and senior high schools in Bungus. So, for the time being, we are closing the schools,” said Mayor Fauzi Bahar last Saturday while visiting the flood-affected areas. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall also triggered floods in parts of North Sumatra Province - Tebing Tinggi District, Langkat District, Simalungun District, Pematang Siantar town, and Binjai.

MADRID - Spain announced Thursday a dip in its towering unemployment rate in the latest sign that the eurozone’s fourth-largest economy is battling its way out of a long recession. The jobless rate eased for the second straight quarter to a still high 25.98 percent in the third quarter of 2013, a report by the National Statistics Institute showed. The news dovetailed with a Bank of Spain assessment the previous day that Spain had emerged from recession in the third quarter with timid 0.1-percent economic growth. That was enough to send world stock markets higher as investors hoped for a broader recovery in the eurozone after five years of economic crisis. The number of people out of work in Spain dipped by 72,800 to 5.9 million in the third quarter, lowering the unemployment rate from the previous quarter’s 26.26 percent. It was the second straight quarter showing a drop in the unemployment rate, which peaked at a staggering 27.16 percent in the first three months of 2013. Spain is still struggling to overcome the aftermath of a decade-long property bubble that imploded in 2008, throwing millions of people out of work, racking up huge debts for the government, banks and people, and plunging the economy into a double-dip recession. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s right-leaning government, which took power in December 2011, has enacted economic reforms and austerity policies so as to curb annual deficits and rein in the national debt. But the painful impact of the spending squeeze, high unemployment, and a slew of corruption scandals have sparked angry street protests. For young people, the employment news remains bleak with 54.39 percent of 16- to 24-year-olds out of work, according to the latest report. Every member of some 1.8 million Spanish households is out of work, it said. Rajoy’s government is promising better times ahead, however, forecasting an overall economic decline in Spain of 1.3 percent in 2013 and then a return to growth of 0.7 percent over 2014. It forecasts an unemployment rate of 26.6 percent this year and 25.9 percent in 2014. The International Monetary Fund has warned that Spain’s unemployment rate will stay above 25 percent until 2018 unless Rajoy’s government undertakes deeper labour market reforms. The positive data from Spain -- which was a focus of anxieties for the eurozone’s stability last year -- reflected signs of recovery in European countries hit by the financial crisis, such as Greece, Ireland and Portugal. France, the eurozone’s second-biggest economy, has confirmed that it exited recession in the second quarter. A recent estimate by statistics institutes in France, Germany and Italy forecast that the eurozone overall would return to timid growth of 0.1 percent in the third quarter.

Net earnings totaled $1.16 billion for the July-September quarter, an increase of 12 percent from $1.03 billion in the same period in 2012, the US aerospace and defense giant said. Earnings per share came in at $1.51 compared with $1.35 a year ago. Adjusted earnings per share, excluding certain pension expenses, increased 16 percent to $1.80, well above Wall Street analysts’ average estimate of $1.55. Revenues also beat expectations, rising 11 percent to $22.13 billion, reflecting higher commercial airplane deliveries. “Consistently strong operating performance is driving higher earnings, revenue and cash flow as we deliver on our record backlog and return increased value to shareholders,” said Jim McNerney, Boeing’s chairman, president and chief executive. Boeing raised its 2013 core earnings outlook to a range of between $6.50 and $6.65 per share, from the prior estimate of $6.20-$6.40 range. It maintained its
revenue forecast of $83-86 billion. Investors cheered, pushing Boeing shares to new all-time highs despite an overall lower market. The Dow component’s stock closed 5.3 percent higher at $129.02, shy of its intraday high at $129.99. In the year to date, Boeing shares have spiked 67 percent, after trading steadily in the $70 range in 2012. Boeing said it expected to deliver 635 to 645 new commercial aircraft in the year, including more than sixty 787s, at an operating margin revised to above 10 percent, an increase of a half percentage point. The Chicago-based company, which employs more than 170,000 people in the US and in 70 countries, said it had third-quarter operating cash flow before voluntary pension contributions of $4.31 billion, up from $2.35 billion a year ago. booked during the quarter. Third-quarter profits from its Commercial Airplanes subsidiary soared 40 percent to $1.62 billion, while revenues rose 15 percent to $13.99 billion. Despite technical glitches that have plagued Boeing’s new 787 Dreamliner , the company reported “continued strong demand” for its cutting-edge plane, which entered service two years ago. The company said it planned to increase its 787 production rate for 2016 to 12 airplanes per month from 10, and would raise that 14 airplanes per month before the end of the decade. But McNerney, in a conference call with analysts, expressed dissatisfaction with the 787’s performance. “Improving dispatch reliability of the 787 is at the top of our priorities,” he said, referring to the ratio of the number of flights delayed because of technical problems to the total number of flights. Boeing booked 200 net aircraft orders in the third quarter. Deliveries accelerated to 170 airplanes from 149 a year ago, as the pace of 787 deliveries nearly doubled. Commercial Airplanes had a backlog of nearly 4,800 airplanes valued at $345 billion.

He hoped the pioneering party remained to make synergy with the Buleleng government to realize the Pemuteran village as a mascot of Buleleng County. “Indeed, to preserve coral reefs must be through a good synergy among the four pillars namely the role of the expert, private sector, public
and government,” he said. Moscow - The Russian government has dismissed the head of the consumer protection agency, a notorious official best known for waging apparent trade wars against the country’s neighbours. Gennady Onishchenko, 63, who had been at the helm of the consumer protection agency Rospotrebnadzor since 2004, has been relieved of his duties, the government said late Wednesday. Onishchenko has been appointed as an aide to Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, according to a government statement. His deputy Anna Popova was appointed his temporary replacement. Under Onishchenko, the consumer protection agency, which enforces sanitary norms, was widely seen as a tool to punish Russia’s neighbours for seeking closer ties with the West or other perceived transgressions. Voila! Brooklyn backdrop suits Gaultier exhibit

NEW YORK — Jean Paul Gaultier can barely contain his enthusiasm to be in Brooklyn. Make that his enthusiasm for New York. And life, in general. In a single conversation, seemingly a single breath, he covers the Chrysler Building; the 1940s film “Falbalas” that started his love affair with fashion; his beloved grandmother who inspired his fascination with corsetry; and the Broadway production of “Nine” that reminded him of it. A joie de vivre oozes with each word. It leaves one wondering, is there anything Gaultier — he of the famous cone bras, tongue-in-cheek catwalks and rock-star collaborations — isn’t exploding to talk about? But back to Brooklyn. Until he arrived this week to christen the Brooklyn Museum exhibit “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk,” he had visited the now-hipster borough twice: once to a fish restaurant that was “very good,” he says, and once to visit the nightclub where John Travolta wore his sharp white suit in the 1977 movie “Saturday Night Fever.” “I’m so impressed with Brooklyn,” he says in his thick French accent and occasionally broken English, “and this museum is absolutely fabulous. Voila!” This is no static fashion exhibition with gowns behind glass. It seems there was no other way to put Gaultier’s 30-plus-year career on display than on mannequins that

Seeing the childhood teddy bear that he used as his first model, complete with its bra top and red lipstick, in the same space as the iconic concert costumes he created for Madonna, Beyonce and Kylie Minogue “is a privilege of age,” Gaultier says. “It’s a very strong sensation.” Yet, Gaultier wasn’t completely sold on a retrospective when ThierryMaxime Loriot, curator of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, presented the idea in 2010. “My god, at first I thought this was only for people that were dead, like a monument! I am not an artist like the painter or something like that, so I feel a little humbled. ... Until now, there is no certainty when the building will be operated. “The art market has been dormant long enough. The building was accomplished in 2012, but has not been in operation so far. It is said the management has not been handed over to customary village. It’s unclear why it has not been functioned so far,” said one of the Mengwi residents. Though being not too extensive, the art market is actually quite interesting because it applied the Balinese architectural style. This market place is also quite strategic situated approximately 30 meters from the west gate of Taman Ayun. However, since it has been too long empty, a few residents worry if the newly established building will even be damaged because it has not been taken care of properly.
When asking for confirmation about this matter to subdistrict head of Mengwi, Made Sudarcita, on Monday (Oct 21), he did not know exactly when the market started to be operated. So far, the customary village was still waiting for the handover of the market. According to him, the market was carried out by the working unit of Bali Province. Similar opinion was also expressed by Director of PD Pasar Badung, I Ketut Golak. He mentioned the Mengwi Art Market was not under the management of PD Pasar Badung. Obviously, restricted number of incinerator is feared to cause the occurrence of medical solid waste disposal into the environment without prior process. Then, what about the effects of solid medical waste when disposed directly into the environment without prior process? According to Section Head of Wangaya Hospital Non-Medical Support, Made Dwi Sukenrini, accompanied by hospital sanitation staff Sofwatul Mufidah said that disposal of unprocessed solid medical waste into the environment was definitely hazardous, not only for people but also for the environment. According to Mufidah, if the solid medical waste consisting of syringes, infusion bags and other broken thermometers was discarded without processed, the first people afflicted by the impact was the rubbish collector. They might be punctured by syringes or other medical items. “The most hazardous is the puncture of syringe exposed to infection. Moreover, the syringe was formerly used for patient suffering infectious diseases such as HIV,” said Mufidah. If the solid waste was disposed directly into the environment without processed, it would endanger the public in the form of threats of infectious due to the wastes. “Another threat, people may be exposed to mercury contained in several solid waste such as thermometers or blood pressure measuring device,”
she said. For the environment, the unmanaged solid waste would pollute groundwater and air. On that account, it was very important for each health service institution to manage its solid waste before it was disposed into the environment. According to Sukenrini, for Wangaya Hospital, the solid medical waste was managed first in incinerator before discharged into the environment. Within two days, the Wangaya Hospital incinerated at least 200 kilograms of solid medical waste consisting of solid medical waste of Wangaya Hospital, community health centers in Denpasar and several other health institutions. Other than maintaining the security of solid medical waste disposal, the incinerator management also included preserving the incinerator exhaust gas threshold generated so that it was safe for the environment and local communities while spreading into the air. Swept away by sea current, an angler vanishes under Benoa toll bridge Denpasar (Bali Post)—
The body of I Made Suka Prabudita Wasesa, 26, has not been found after he was swept away by sea current under the Benoa toll bridge, Sunday (Oct 20). Allegedly, the angler slipped and fell while exploring the beams of toll bridge. Since the current was strong enough, the body of the victim having the address on Jalan Dewi Sri Gang Jeruk, Batubulan, Gianyar, immediately disappeared. As information, the victim with four friends was about to angle at the scene. They explored the beams beneath the toll bridge to find appropriate location for fishing. “Since the tide was low, they explored the pathway amidst the toll bridge beams. However, when arriving at fisherman base, approximately 500 meters from the Benoa Toll Gate, the victim fell,” the source said on Monday (Oct 21). Victim fell when he tried to cross from one
beam to another beam. Allegedly, the victim’s legs slipped so that he fell. Once fell, the victim’s body was immediately swept away and his friends attempted to help. However, their efforts seemed fruitless and the victim was not seen. The accident was then reported to police station and the officers of Bali Marine Police and National SAR Agency promptly came down to location to do a search. Marin Police Section Head of Bali Police, Nyoman Sukasena, said on Monday (Oct 21) the sea current at the scene was indeed strong enough when the tide was low. Even, the water reached a waist-deep and the current was very strong. According to a friend of Suka, Nyoman Suparta, 40, the victim slipped. “The location is indeed very hazardous due to strong currents. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

‘The Goldfinch’ is a tale of art and loss Associated Press Writer
This absorbing novel begins when an ordinary excursion to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City by 13-year-old Theo Decker and his mother erupts in a sudden, senseless act of violence. In the mayhem that follows, Decker’s mother is killed and he somehow picks up and walks away with a priceless piece of artwork from the 1600s, “The Goldfinch” by Carel Fabritius. The scene unfolds slowly in harrowing detail and sets in motion nearly every subsequent event in the novel. Suddenly motherless, Decker’s quiet life becomes tumultuous. He is taken in by his friend’s wealthy and kind but distant family, and later goes to live with his estranged, gambling-addicted father
and his cocktail waitress girlfriend on the semi-abandoned outskirts of Las Vegas. There he meets Boris, a charming but unhinged ex-pat with Ukrainian and Russian roots who becomes his best friend, introducing Decker to a larger world via both Russian novels and drugs. As he grows older, he continues to secretly protect the painting, both as a work of beauty he has grown to cherish and as the only link to life before the tragedy. Establishing himself as an
antiques dealer back in New York as an adult, Decker strives for a calm life, but soon Boris re-emerges and everything he thought was in his past comes back in full force to haunt him. Tartt, in her third novel after “The Secret History” and “The Little Friend,” paints the many different strata of life that Decker floats through with vivid detail, including the dissolute Vegas gambling scene, high-society Manhattan, the world of antique furniture dealing and shady underworld art dens. The author trains an acute eye on the moral ambiguity of all of her characters in “The Goldfinch”: Decker, for example, can be deeply sympathetic but also proves capable of shocking acts both unethical and violent.

NEW DELHI — Famed playback singer Manna Dey, who recorded nearly 4,000 songs and can be heard in scores of Bollywood films, died in a Bangalore hospital early Thursday. He was 94. Dey was hospitalized in May and was being treated for a kidney infection when his organs failed, said K. Vasuki, an official of the Narayana Institute of Cardiac Sciences. Dey’s deep voice and mastery in singing classical music-based songs
enthralled millions of music lovers. He started his singing career in 1942. He sang mainly in Hindi and Bengali languages and his peak period was 1953-1980. He also lent his voice to songs in several Indian regional languages — Bengali, Assamese, Gujrati and Malayalam. The White House, rattled by the latest exposure based on leaks from intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, said it is not now listening in on Merkel, but did not deny the possibility her communications may have been intercepted in the past. In the wake of Snowden’s ongoing revelations, several more key US countries have already complained about American electronic surveillance, and the White House is struggling to stem the diplomatic damage. A spokesman for Merkel, who has registered strong disapproval at US National Security Agency activities in the past, said his boss had called Obama after Germany received information that US intelligence may be spying on her mobile phone. Steffen Seibert said in a statement that Merkel “made clear that she unequivocally disapproves of such practices, should they be confirmed, and regards them as completely unacceptable”. She had demanded “an immediate and comprehensive explanation” from Washington, the statement said. “Among close friends and partners, as the Federal Republic of Germany and the US have been for decades, there should be no such monitoring of the communications of a head of government,” the statement added, indirectly citing Merkel’s comments to Obama.
