British actor Colin Firth gets dual Italian citizenship after Brexit vote ROME - British actor Colin Firth, who has often played the role of a quintessential Englishman in his many films, has become an Italian citizen, Italyâs Interior Ministry said. âThe very famous actor, who won an Oscar for the film âThe Kingâs Speechâ, is married to a citizen from our country and has often declared his love for our land,â the ministry said in a statement. Firth said he would remain a dual national, adding that his Italian-born wife would also be seeking British nationality. âWe never really thought much about our different passports,â the actor said in a statement. âBut now, with some of the uncertainty around, we thought it sensible that we should all get the same,â he added, in an apparent reference to last yearâs British vote to leave the European Union. Firth has been married to Italian film producer Livia Giuggioli since 1997 and the couple live with their two sons in Britain. Unlike some other EU countries, Italy and Britain both allow dual nationality. âMy wife and I are both extremely proud of our own countries,â Firth said. A number of EU countries, including Germany, France and Ireland, have reported a surge in British citizens seeking a new nationality in the wake of the Brexit vote. The Italian announcement came just hours after British Prime Minister Theresa May flew to Florence to make a keynote speech to try to revive stalled Brexit negotiations and reassure worried business leaders. Rodarte sisters go deep into the woods for film debut âWoodshockâ
LOS ANGELES - When the sisters behind high-fashion label Rodarte decided to make their debut film âWoodshock,â they looked for inspiration where they have always searched - in the redwood forests by their Northern California coastal home. Laura Mulleavy, 38, and Kate Mulleavy, 37, took the majestic and ethereal wooded landscapes near their hometown of Aptos, California, to write and direct a dark poetic thriller of a young womanâs psychological descent after the death of her mother. âWe were always very inspired by nature,â Laura Mulleavy told Reuters. âIn writing our first film, we definitely were really looking at nature through a microscope, the idea that weâre so connected to the natural world and yet we have completely, as human beings. In a lot of ways weâve cut ourselves off from that connection.â âWoodshock,â out in U.S. movie theaters on Friday, follows Theresa (Kirsten Dunst), who works at a
marijuana shop in a rural coastal California town and drifts like a wood nymph in a weed haze through the redwood trees that are slowly being cut down. Made for around $5 million, the Mulleavys brought their years of running a successful independent fashion label to the business of independent filmmaking. âHaving run (Rodarte) for 12 years, you really learn to be a creative protector of the ideas and the vision behind what youâre doing and that is something we could very solidly bring into film,â Kate Mulleavy said. The striking visuals of the eerie forests, misty tree tops and vibrant flora of Humboldt County, California play a starring role in Theresaâs journey, as well as echoing
the bohemian California aesthetic that marks the Rodarte runway collections. Rodarteâs most recent Spring/ Summer 2018 collection featured models in delicate lace dresses accented with babyâs breath flowers draped through their hair, detailed flower embroidery and vibrant flora prints. The film has received mixed reviews, with some praising the artistic visuals and dream-like sequences, while others found the plot to be slumberous. âWhen you make anything thatâs not homogenous and not cookie-cutter and understandable in the typical straightforward way, that will be provocative and thatâs exciting,â Kate Mulleavy said. Volcano on Indonesiaâs Bali island at highest alert level, thousands evacuated
DENPASAR - Thousands of residents were evacuated from villages near an active volcano on the Indonesian island of Bali, officials said on Friday, as the alert status was raised to the highest level, meaning an eruption could be imminent.
Authorities warned tourists and residents to avoid camping or hiking within a 9 km (6 mile) radius of the crater as seismic tremors rattled some areas and smoke rose above one of the worldâs most popular tourist spots. âVolcanic activity remains high and there are indications of magma rising to the surface and causing tremors,â said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho of the National Disaster Management Agency. âThere should be zero public activity within the specified radius in case there is an eruption,â Nugroho said. However, flights at Baliâs inter-
national airport were operating as normal and there was little disruption to tourism operators across the rest of the island, authorities said. Nearly 10,000 people have been evacuated so far and that number was expected to rise, officials said. Others packed their belongings into trucks for evacuation, while more stopped to watch as clouds of white smoke rose from the crater, which is around 3,000 metres (9,840 feet) above sea level. Indonesia straddles the âPacific Ring of Fireâ, where several tectonic plates meet and cause 90 per-
cent of the worldâs seismic activity, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Indonesia has nearly 130 active volcanoes, more than any other country. A series of eruptions at Mount Agung between 1963 and 1964 killed more than 1,000 people and injured hundreds.(rtr) News can also be heard in âBali Imageâ at Global Radio FM 96.5 from 9.30 until 10.00 am.
