The actor and dancer, who played a personal presidential aide on “The West Wing,” got a chance to perform a song Monday night for President Barack Obama and other world leaders attending the U.N. General Assembly session. Hill and cast members of the upcoming Broadway show “After Midnight,” a musical celebrating Duke Ellington’s years at the famous Cotton Club nightclub in Harlem, sang a few numbers at the Waldorf Astoria, a swanky Park Avenue hotel. Hill sang “I’ve Got the World on a String,” and cast members sang the songs “Devil and the Deep Blue Sea” and “Creole Love Call.” “I really enjoyed it,” Hill said afterward. “I never thought this would ever happen. Litigants battle over photos of legendary bluesman

JACKSON, Mississippi — A legal battle over profits from the only two known photographs of legendary Delta bluesman Robert Johnson — who is said to have sold his soul to the devil for prowess on the guitar — now rests with the Mississippi Supreme Court. Johnson, whose songs have influenced a host of famous musicians, was destitute when he died in Mississippi in 1938 at age 27. His estate is valuable, partly because of a collection of his recordings that won a Grammy in 1990. Three justices heard arguments Monday in the dispute about the photos, one of which is a studio portrait taken of the Mississippi bluesman by Hooks Brothers Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. The other photo, known as “the dime store portrait” or “the photo booth self-portrait,” was taken by Johnson himself. Presiding Justice Jess H. Dickinson said he and his colleagues will take time to consider the case. He didn’t say when they will rule. On one side are descendants of Johnson’s late half-sister, Carrie Harris Thompson. Their attorney, Stephen E. Nevas, argued the photos were Thompson’s personal property but others profited from them.

Bali News Residents around Jalan Legian, Kuta, Badung, were shocked by a shooting incident, Sunday (Sep 22). One of the restaurants was shot by an unknown culprit. Allegedly, the culprit rode an automatic motorcycle armed with an airsoft gun. No casualties were reported in the incident. However, a television mounted on the restaurant broke out due to the shooting. Information at police station on Monday (Sep 23) told the shooting occurred around 9:00 in the morning. Earlier, the culprit came to the scene with an automatic motorcycle. He stopped in front of the restaurant and met with one of the local security guards. “The culprit was alone. He asked the other guard with the initial J. It was unknown why he asked J,” said the source. Because J did not come to work, the security guard told the truth. However, the answer given by the security guard was apparently not trusted, so that it kindled a quarrel. Well, when the quarrel took place, the culprit suddenly took something out of his shirt. Apparently, it was a weapon. “Possibly, it was an airsoft gun. The culprit fired the gun at the restaurant,” he said while having his name made secret. The shooting was directed at a television mounted in the scene. After the shooting, the culprit ran away southwardly. Meanwhile, the case was reported to police station. Police officers immediately conducted a crime scene investigation and examined a number of witnesses. Even, police had also seized the CCTV footage. “The footage of CCTV installed around the restaurant has been confiscated by police. Probably, the culprit could have been recorded,” he explained. So far, police had not known the culprit and its motif. The officers were still hunting down the culprit. Meanwhile, Chief of Criminal Detective Unit of Kuta Police, Wahyu Setyo, when asked for his confirmation on Monday admitted the case was handled by the Criminal Detective Unit of Denpasar Metro Police. “The case is handled by Denpasar Metro Police,” he dodged. Irrigation repaired, 400 hectares of paddy field in drought Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Dry season having started to happen lately has not showed a significant impact on the agriculture in Denpasar. However, hundreds of hectares of paddy fields in North Denpasar are in drought. It happens due to repair activities to the irrigation dam at Tanah Putih, Gerih, Badung County. Are at least, 400 hectares of farmland are affected by the drought. The Head of the Denpasar Agriculture and Horticulture Agency, I Gede Ambara Putra, said on Monday (Sep 23) there had been no paddy fields drying out due to drought in Denpasar. However, the drought was a result of the irrigation channel repair at Gerih. It was said the repair to the irrigation channel had been worked on since May 2013 and would be completed in December 2013. It was the project of the Bali government. “Hopefully, the schedule of completion could meet the specified time, so that the impact is not

getting longer,” said Ambara. The subak experiencing such a drought included the Subak Dalem, Subak Pakel 1, Subak Pakel 2 and other subak areas around Peguyangan. Actually, if there was no repair of irrigation channel, farmers at this subak got its turn to grow paddy because they had previously planted crops. “As consequence, they are unable to grow paddy now,” he said. Aside from the matter of drought, the greatest threat experienced by farmers in Denpasar was land conversion. Each year, the land conversion was predicted to reach 198 hectares. It was triggered by the high demand of land for housing in Denpasar. Since the past few years, the land conversion had been increasing. “Within the past five years, the wetland conversion occurred in Denpasar is from 2,717 hectares to 2,519 hectares or shows a land reduction of 198 hectares,” said Ambara Putra. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Burger King launching lower-calorie french fry Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK — Burger King wants people to feel less guilty about gobbling up its french fries. The world’s No. 2 hamburger chain is launching a new crinkle-cut french fry on Tuesday that it says has 20 percent fewer calories than its regular french fries. The chain says a small order of the new “Satisfries” clocks in at 270 calories because of a new batter that doesn’t absorb as much oil. By comparison, a small order of its regular fries, sans crinkles, has 340 calories. The concept of taking an indulgent food and removing some of the guilt isn’t new, of course. Supermarkets are filled with baked Lay’s potato chips, 100-calorie packs of Oreos cookies and other less fattening versions of popular treats. Such creations play on people’s inability to give up their food vices, even as they struggle to eat better. The idea is to create something that skimps on calories, but not on taste. Burger King executives say people won’t be able to tell that Satisfries are lower in calories. It says they use exactly the same ingredients as its regular fries — potatoes, oil and batter. To keep kitchen operations simple, they’re even made in the same fryers and cooked for the same amount of

time as regular fries. The difference, Burger King says, is that it adjusts the proportions of different ingredients for the batter to block out more oil. The company declined to be more specific. Another difference, the crinkle-cut shape, is in part so workers will be able to easily distinguish them from the regular fries when they’re deep frying them together. “You need to make things as simple as possible,” says Eric Hirschhorn, Burger King’s chief marketing officer. LIMA, Peru — A Peruvian congressman has joined animal rights activists to try and halt the consumption of barbecued cat at an annual religious festival. The activists say at least 100 cats will be eaten at this weekend’s festival of Santa Efigenia in La Quebrada, a town south of Lima. Congressman Juan Urquiza joined activists this year to write the district mayor and Peru’s health minister and demand a ban on cat-eating under a domestic animal protection law. Activists also claim that dining on felines is a public health danger. Health Minister Midori de Habich says the practice should be halted. But she has taken no action. La Quebrada residents defend their tradition and say the cats sacrificed are specially bred with only a handful killed and eaten.

Autopsy confirms US patient had rare brain disease Associated Press Writer

CONCORD, New Hampshire — New Hampshire public health officials say an autopsy has confirmed a patient who may have exposed others to the rare brain disease Creutzfeldt-Jakob died of it. After the patient died in August officials suspected Creutzfeldt-Jakob, an always-fatal disease characterized by rapidly progressive dementia. But the only way to confirm it is through

a brain biopsy or autopsy. The patient had brain surgery at Catholic Medical Center in Manchester in May. Officials warned eight other patients they may have been exposed because the proteins that cause the disease survive standard techniques used to sterilize surgical equipment. Five others in Massachusetts and Connecticut also were notified because the equipment was rented and used elsewhere. But officials say such transmission is extremely rare. AP Photo/Jim Cole

Government urged to take action fairly Bali Post

MANGUPURA - Central and local governments are asked to act fairly in including the Besakih Temple in the National Tourism Strategic Area (KSPN). Moreover, relevant authorities still do not clarity on the direction of the program. “We have not known yet what to do in Besakih Temple related to the KSPN program, whether the tourist object will be arranged or included in the category of tourist destination,” said the lecturer of Bali Tourism Institute (STP) Nusa Dua Bali, I Made Mandra. According to him, the definition of destination arrangement was different from the tourist object arrangement. Arrangement of tourist object was defined as the arrangement to an area that was previously chaotic into the more comfortable one such as by the construction of pedestrian and gazebo shelter. By contrast, the destination arrangement included the development of accommodation like hotels. “If it refers to the arrangement of object, it’s surely good. However, if it refers to destination arrangement is inappropriate because in a destination there must be certainly an accommodation. Meanwhile, Besakih is a sacred area, not a tourism area. On that account, it is required the firmness of the government in outlining the program,” he said. He argued the KSPN program should involve local community aside from involving local government and central government. “The community should be involved in this arrangement and the government cannot do it independently,” he said.

JAKARTA - The Indonesian island resort of Bali will soon host an international conference on the sources, effects, and the risks of ionising radiation, said an official. Anhar Riza Antariksawan, a researcher at the National Nuclear Energy Agency (BATAN), mentioned on Tuesday that BATAN will hold the conference in collaboration with the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR). “The seminar will be held a few days after the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting in Bali from October 10 to 11,” added Antariksawan. Ionising radiation is high-frequency radiation that has enough energy to ionise an electron from an atom or molecule and damage the DNA in cells, which in turn may lead to cancer. He noted that the conference aims to collect data and spread scientific findings associated with the sources,

effects, and risks of ionising radiation, besides stepping up good communication among the stakeholders. Antarisawan said the discussion in the conference will be on the emission of natural radiation, the emission of the work of medical radiation, the impact of radiation on health and environment, and emergency response and alertness against nuclear reaction and radiology. “We will cooperate with neighbouring countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, and Australia in the conference because we need a lot of data on radiation and its effects,” he noted. He added that the speakers in the conference include UNSCEAR Secretary Malcolm Crick, UNSCEAR Chairman Carl-Magnuss Larsson, Argentine delegation leader at UNSCEAR Abel Gonzales, Ohtsura Niwa of Fukushima Medical University, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) expert Peter Zagyvai, Indonesian Radiation Oncology Society Chairman Soehartati Ghondowiardjo, and BATAN deputy chief Anhar R Antariksawan.

He further said he hoped people were aware of the traffic signs put up by PT Jasamarga Bali Tol to ensure driving security. The chief pointed out that people’s awareness about traffic signages was important in order to avoid traffic accidents on the first toll road built in Bali. “People should obey the traffic signs and drive safely to avoid accidents,” Putra said. set up several CCTV cameras, which were connected to the Traffic Police Officers, who in turn could monitor traffic conditions on the highway. Putra said the CCTV camera could also monitor any incidents occurring on the toll road, which could be confirmed by the Traffic Police officers. “I saw there were several broken road lamps. I have asked PT Jasamarga Bali Tol to repair the lamps and turn them on at night,” Putra revealed. Previously, the Managing Director of PT Jasamarga Bali Tol Akhmad Tito Karim had said the Bali Toll Road is the first highway to be constructed above sea level, which is 24 meters wide and has three lanes including one for motorcycles. Karim added that the toll road was 10 kilometers long and was being constructed above the sea level and also included two kilometers of land highway for the Benoa Seaport gate.

KMHDI Karangasem rejects Besakih to be included in KSPN

A series of rejections against the inclusion of Besakih Temple in the national tourism strategic areas (KSPN) continue to expand. After the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI Bali) and several Balinese figures that care about the sanctity of Besakih Temple, similar rejection was also revealed by the Hindu Dharma Student Union of Indonesia (KMHDI Karangasem), Monday (Sep 23). Coordinator of the KMHDI Karangasem, Wayan Budiasa, decisively rejected the Besakih Temple to be included in the KSPN. Reasons for rejecting the inclusion, he said, because in the Government Regulation No.50/2011 on the National Tourism Development Master Plan (RIPPN), in fact, the KSPN did not include the place of worship at all, including temples. On that account, the inclusion of Besakih Temple in the KSPN clearly violated the Government Regulation No.50/2011 because temple had socio-religious function for the Hindus. Besakih Temple belonged to kahyangan jagat or universal temple. Besides, it was also the biggest temple in Southeast Asia and highly sanctified. He said that based on the Government Regulation on the national tourism master plan, the area referred to in the KSPN was the one having primary function or having the potential for the development of national tourism with significant effect in one or more impacts such as on the economic growth, socioculture, empowerment of natural resources, environmental carrying capacity as well as resilience and security. He added the KSPN did not include the place of worship. “Including temple as a place of worship that has social and spiritual function for the Hindus is a violation against the Government Regulation No.50. Therefore, the KMHDI Karangasem expressly rejects the inclusion of Besakih Temple in the KSPN,” he said. Other than the reason, he said, the KMHDI also worried if Besakih Temple had been included in the KSPN it could be managed separately, for example, through an agency or authority. The Hindus were very worrying if one day their worship to temple would be restricted or could even be directed to ask for permission to the KSPN authority. Budiasa said the Hindus needed to think comprehensively for the sake of the future of the Hindus themselves in relation to the function of Besakih Temple. Budiasa added that it was unsuitable and inappropriate if temple or temple area was included in the KSPN because the Government Regulation No.50/2011 on the RIPPN clearly did not mention any spiritual or social function of the place of worship. Temple as a worshipping place for the Hindus should not be confused with archaeological sites or coastal areas that could be made a tourism area. “If Besakih Temple is included in the KSPN, we very much worry if in the long term will lead to the degradation of temple sanctity and change the mindset on the temple sanctity as place of worship whose sanctity and sacredness should be maintained,” he affirmed. Actually, all this time when the Besakih Temple was included in the tourist attraction, the temple was thronged by tourists. Even, the contestants of Miss World were invited to visit it. Actually, temple posed a place of worship of the Hindus, while people frequently came just to travel, not to worship. From the observation on Monday (Sep 23), at least five trash bins in the civic center area were damaged like the one near the Jagatnatha Temple and Pecangakan Stadium. Even, they only remained in the form of supporting poles. Meanwhile, the 3-compartment trash bins lining up were no longer intact. Previously, the 3-compartment trash bins had been intentionally installed to support the government program to sort plastic waste. Therefore, it would be easier for the officers to further process in the composting plant. Unfortunately, such an effort no longer worked and all kinds of waste were then mixed. The boom in non-conventional petroleum in 2012 added nearly 500,000 direct jobs, according to a study by research firm IHS. The total impact from the sector was 2.1 million jobs added including workers in oilrelated lodging, food, transportation and construction. IHS estimates that in 2012, the industry generated nearly $75 billion in federal and state tax revenue and contributed $283 billion to the US gross domestic product. OTTAWA - Tech pioneer BlackBerry made a last roll of the dice Monday and agreed to a probable $4.7 billion buyout by a consortium planning to take the struggling smartphone maker private. BlackBerry was once a leader in mobile tech but has been squeezed by rivals Android and Apple, which coincidentally announced record sales of its latest iPhone on Monday. The Ontario-based company said it had signed a letter of intent with a group led by Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited, which has offered to acquire the company. Fairfax, a Canadian firm headed by billionaire Prem Watsa, is already BlackBerry’s largest shareholder with approximately 10 percent of its shares. Watsa resigned from BlackBerry’s board in August when it announced a search for a suitor. Watsa said the sale “will open an exciting new private chapter for BlackBerry, its customers, carriers and employees.”

“We can deliver immediate value to shareholders while we continue the execution of a long-term strategy in a private company.” Ironically, the announcement came on the same day Apple said it sold a record nine million iPhones in three days after launching two new versions of its smartphone last week. Under the proposed BlackBerry-Fairfax deal, the consortium would offer $9 for each outstanding share, and Fairfax would contribute its own shares in the transaction. BlackBerry said its board supports the plan. A firm deal, once due diligence is completed, is expected by November 4. It also hinges on the consortium obtaining financing. BlackBerry said it would continue a search for a possibly better suitor in the interim. BlackBerry stock was down six percent to $8.23 before trading was halted just prior to its announcement. Its shares bounced back in afternoon trading to close at $9.08 but remain far below the stock’s historical high.

NEW DELHI - Lawyers for four men sentenced to death for raping and murdering a young woman on a New Delhi bus challenged the verdicts at a High Court hearing Tuesday. The brutal attack in December sparked public debate and fury over chronic sexual violence faced by women in India. “I am challenging this verdict,” said A.P. Singh, who has defended all four men at various times. All death penalty cases in India must be confirmed by a higher court. As part of the proceedings for that, the High Court said Wednesday it would begin hearing prosecution arguments supporting the guilty verdicts and death penalties issued earlier this month, while the defense lawyers file their appeals. “We have to deal with this as expeditiously as possible because the sword of death is hanging over them,” Judge Pratibha Rani said.

It could take weeks or months for the court to hear arguments, review evidence and consider the appeals before deciding whether to confirm the execution orders. For Tuesday’s hearing, the men walked under police escort from a bus into the High Court complex. Three had their faces uncovered in public for the first time since the crime, while one wore a handkerchief tied over his nose and mouth. MEXICO CITY - Human nature is sharing the blame with Mother Nature in Mexico for the destruction spawned by twin storms, with critics pointing to shoddy construction, endemic corruption and political wheelingand-dealing. The country was thrashed last week by a rare tag team of tropical storms on opposite coasts, Manuel and Ingrid, that killed at least 123 people, damaged 72 roads and affected 1.5 million homes to various degrees. A further 63 people are still missing, authorities said in the latest tally late Monday. The interior minister has estimated the final death toll could reach 200, with some 1.5 million homes affected. While some experts say there was little Mexico could do against the first double storm assault since 1958, critics argue that the disaster was exacerbated by bad urban planning, poorly designed roads and widespread illegal logging. “It’s not surprising. GROSSETO, Italy - The captain of the wrecked Costa Concordia, now on trial over the deadly disaster, blamed his helmsman Monday for botching a last-minute corrective maneuver that he contends could have prevented the massive cruise ship’s collision with a reef off an Italian island. Capt. Francesco Schettino is charged with manslaughter, causing the shipwreck and abandoning ship before the luxury cruise liner’s 4,200 passengers and crew could be evacuated on Jan. 13, 2012. Thirty-two people died that night. Last week, the capsized ship was raised upright in a major salvage operation. Critics have depicted Schettino as a negligent coward. But Schettino insists he is being made a scapegoat and that errors by other Costa Crociere SpA crew and mechanical problems exacerbated the tragedy that occurred near the Tuscan island of Giglio. The Concordia crashed into a reef, took on water and capsized when Schettino steered it dangerously close to Giglio. It was an off-route maneuver that the captain is alleged to have taken in part because he wanted to impress his passengers with a close-up view of the island’s twinkling lights. Schettino told the court that as the Concordia came perilously close to Giglio’s rocky coastline, he ordered his helmsman to steer the rudder to the left, but the crewman reacted too slowly and shifted to the right instead. The jagged reef sliced a 70-meter (230-foot) gash in the ship’s hull. “If it weren’t for the helmsman’s error, to not position the rudder to the left ... the swerve (toward the reef) and the collision wouldn’t have happened,” said Schettino, who risks 20 years in prison if convicted. Schettino also has said the reef wasn’t on his charts, and that the company should shoulder some blame. Investigators have said language problems between the Italian captain and the Indonesian-born helmsman may have played a role in the botched maneuver. A maritime expert, however, told the court that although the helmsman was slow to react and had indeed erred, in the end it didn’t matter. “The helmsman was 13 seconds late in executing the maneuver, but the crash would have happened anyway,” Italian naval Adm. Giuseppe Cavo Dragone said Monday.

Mangindaan said the project was signed in Montreal, Canada, on Monday and included the ICAO assisting Indonesia with the implementation of the new aviation emission reduction initiatives. “This cooperation project between the Ministry of Transportation and ICAO is of great importance for Indonesia because it reflects the country’s seriousness in resolving issues related to the air transportation sector,” Mangindaan stated. East Timor bans martial arts clubs amid killings Associated Press

DILI — East Timor police say there will be zero tolerance against those who continue to practice a local martial art after the government banned all clubs following deadly gang violence, an official said Monday. At least 12 East Timorese have been killed and more than 200 injured in the past two years as a result of fighting among rival pencak silat clubs, said Armando Monteiro, National Police detective chief. Two were killed in neighboring Indonesia, while other deaths and injuries have occurred as far away as England and Ireland. He said the number of casualties is likely higher since many people are afraid to report gang activity or go to the hospital for treatment. “Any martial arts clubs members that violate the government resolution will be dealt with under the law,” Monteiro said. There will be “zero tolerance for martial arts activities in the country.” Schools and clubs for pencak silat, an adapted form of the Indonesian martial art, have a long history in East Timor, with

many students in the past fighting against Indonesia’s military occupation. They also became active clandestine members in supporting guerrilla fighters and some made significant contributions toward winning the country’s independence in 2002. Later, martial arts students became rivals and began killing each other in the streets as happened in 2006 during a violent political crisis that left dozens dead and tens of thousands displaced in the tiny half-island nation. In many villages across East Timor, students start learning pencak silat at age 13. Less popular martial arts, such as karate, kung fu, taekwondo and judo, are not banned. Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao issued a resolution outlawing the popular clubs two months ago. He said he has tried to work with the groups for years to allow them to continue to operate peacefully, but said the original purpose and philosophy of martial arts has been lost in East Timor. “I have no more mercy and no more patience,” said Gusmao, who added he has tried to work with the groups since becoming the country’s first president in

2002. “I cannot tolerate the situation anymore, and I cannot permit it anymore.” Gusmao said police and members of the military have been told to leave martial arts groups or be fired. Some clubs have publicly handed over their uniforms to police in front of government officials, but police say some members continue to conduct their training secretly at night. Monteiro said anyone caught violating the resolution will be punished under the law. Seven martial arts clubs were registered, but many others exist without the government’s knowledge making it difficult to estimate the number of members nationwide. Last month, one East Timorese student was killed at Widyagama University in Malang, Indonesia, and another had his hand cut off with a samurai sword by a martial arts gang member. “I need justice because the suspects who cut off my hand have not yet been captured by the police,” said Jacinto Cipriano Ximenes, 25, a final-year telecommunications student who plans to return to school and finish his studies this year.

Damian Cudlin will return to MotoGP at Aragon this weekend to replace Yonny Hernandez in the Paul Bird Motorsport CRT team. Hernandez has moved to Pramac Ducati for the rest of the season in place of the injured Ben Spies. Australian rider Cudlin takes Hernandez’s place alongside Michael Laverty in the PBM line-up. The 30-year-old is currently second in Germany’s IDM Superbike series. Cudlin made a couple of MotoGP appearances in late 2011 as a substitute rider. He was called up by Pramac for Motegi after Loris Capirossi suffered a dislocated shoulder at Misano, and impressed by running 12th before crashing out of the race. That performance prompted Aspar to recruit Cudlin for the next round at Phillip Island, as its regular rider Hector Barbera had been hurt at Motegi. But Cudlin did not get to start his home grand prix as he had a heavy crash of his own in practice. He had a couple of races in Moto2 the following year before departing the grand prix paddock.
