Owen Wilson says his father suffers from Alzheimer’s
DALLAS — Dallas-born actor Owen Wilson says that while his father having Alzheimer’s disease is “a rough thing,” he also knows that there are things to be grateful for, including that his father is being cared for at home and has people around who love him. “It is a rough thing,” Wilson told the Dallas Morning News in his first public comment about his 74-year-old father’s illness. “It’s one of those things where if somebody had said 10 years ago, when my dad and I were joking around, having a putting match, that this is the position your dad’s going to be in, where he basically needs 24-hour care, you’d think, ‘Gosh, I won’t be able to handle that. That’s just not possible,’” Wilson said. The actor, who grew up in Dallas, added: “You just have to do your
best to deal with it. You’ve got no choice but to accept it. And then, you sort of still look for the things to be grateful for.” His father, Robert A. “Bob” Wilson, is a longtime Dallas executive. He took charge of Dallas’ public television affiliate, KERA, in 1967. He hired Jim Lehrer from the Dallas Times Herald and put him in charge of public affairs programming. That led to the creation of a local news program with Lehrer as host that became the forerunner of a national staple, “The News Hour With Jim Lehrer.” “For me and my brothers, there just wasn’t a bigger influence on us,” Owen Wilson, who has starred in movies including “Wedding Crashers,” told the newspaper. His brothers are actors Luke and Andrew Wilson. Owen Wilson plays a father in his new movie “No Escape,” a thriller about a businessman who unwittingly transports his wife and two young daughters into a country where the government is being toppled in a coup. Wilson, 46, said it’s a role he couldn’t have played without first becoming a father himself. He has two sons, ages 4½ and 1½. (ap)

Hugh Jackman brings Broadway to Australia
SYDNEY - Hollywood star Hugh Jackman revealed Monday he will return to the stage in a personal show in Australia inspired by his successful Broadway performances. The Australian, best known for his role of Wolverine in the “X-Men” movies, said “Broadway to Oz” would be an “intimate look at my life, the stuff that I love”. “It’s pretty much all about me,” the Golden Globe, Emmy and Tony Award winner told reporters in Sydney. “You are going to get to know the real me in that show. I will tell you what it’s like being in my shoes.” The show will be based on his 2011 Broadway show, “Hugh Jackman: Back on Broadway” and will map his journey from Australia to Hollywood as well as pay tribute to classic musicals. “I’m a big lover of movie musicals,” Jackman said, naming “Singing in the Rain” as the greatest in that category. The 46-year-old said it had always been his intention to bring the Broadway show to Australia, saying “the end game for me was being here”. Featuring 150 dancers, musicians, singers and a choir, the show will tour Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth in November and December. (afp)
Police probe Mel Gibson’s ‘angry tirade’ at Australian photographer
SYDNEY - Police were investigating claims on Monday that controversial Hollywood star Mel Gibson allegedly shoved and verbally abused an Australian photographer during an angry altercation. Kristi Miller, a news photographer with Sydney’s Daily Telegraph, said she had taken two pictures of Gibson leaving a cinema in the city with Rosalind Ross, 24, on Sunday evening when the actor aggressively confronted her.
“I took two frames and then I ran to get in front of them,” she told the newspaper. “I turned around with my back to them and ran forward and the next thing I knew he had shoved me in the back from behind.” Miller described the actor as “out of control” as he charged after her, spitting in her face and calling her a “dog”. “I was just shocked that I was being pushed, shoved in the back,” she claimed.
New South Wales police said they were investigating the incident but did not specify what, if any, charges were being pursued. “Police were told a man became involved in an altercation with a photographer. He allegedly pushed the photographer,” they said in statement to AFP. “We would urge anyone who might have witnessed the incident and is yet to speak to police to come forward.”
Gibson’s management in the United States denied any physical contact between the star of “Braveheart” and “Lethal Weapon” and the photographer. “There was no physical contact whatsoever with this photographer, who was harassing my client and his friend,” the actor’s representative, Alan Nierob, told the Telegraph in an email. Miller alleged Gibson, 59 continued to lash out at her until he was led away by an apologetic Ross.
“I thought he was going to punch me in the face,” Miller said, adding that Gibson was using offensive language. The Oscar winner, who is in Australia to direct World War II drama “Hacksaw Ridge”, has not been without controversy in recent years. In a high-profile case, he was caught on tape in 2006 making an anti-Semitic rant at a US sheriff’s deputy who had arrested him for drunken driving. (afp)

Weak regulations regarding the management of tourism have allowed a lot of grey areas in the law, that makes it easy for venture capitalists to make a profit at the expense of many. Tourism also invites all sorts of people to come to Bali, ranging from real estate investors to tuyul or evil spirits bearing wads of cash. Many fear that the uncontrolled expansion of tourism in Bali will mean that the next generation will no longer be Balinese. Prof. Sutjaya recently spoke of Bali’s position in the midst of tourism saying: “Bali has been wildly exploited. Unclear
regulations for the protecting of Bali, have caused tourism to be managed with an approach that prioritizes financial interests and allows for collusion. This is a bleak period of Balinese civilization,” he said mournfully. Sutjaya, former professor at Udayana University, said he would like to clear up the public mis-perception that has been implanted and which states that tourism has spurred the growth of Bali’s economy. Today, tourism in Bali is controlled by people from outside of Bali and profit seekers from overseas, and is being severely exploited. “The exploitation of both the nature and culture of Bali has already surpassed the threshold of sustainability and the development of tourism in Bali is making Balinese people themselves increasingly marginalized. Resistance on the part of Balinese people will continue to weaken due to their fragile economic position,” he said. Sutjaya predicts that if Balinese people who truly understand about their culture, do not take their moral responsibility -to make sure that this culture will be passed on to the next generation, very seriously, in just one generation the culture will be lost. This prediction will come true, he said, if Balinese people do not immediately become aware of the need to protect their territory from the grips of greedy capitalist and evil spirits who are invading the island. He also said that those who are only interested in making a profit are currently in control of the strategic sectors of the economy and also of the physical space of Bali, while evil spirits are beguiling the people of Bali through money laundering, drug trafficking and prostitution. Prof. Sutjaya affirms that the Bali tourism pie is now not only being eaten by people from Jakarta, and that much of the profits have also fled overseas. Tourism in Bali is also being managed with modernization in mind, and neglects Balinese architectural norms and values. The large numbers of people flocking to Bali are also squeezing Balinese locals out of the job market. What’s more, evil spirits are bringing in money and brokers, whose ventures are facilitated under various pretexts and by various means. Money laundering under the guise of investments are also driving up the prices of land and leave many with little choice but to sell their land which in turn causes many Balinese to become increasingly materialistic and engaged in consumer culture. Rather quickly Balinese people are being driven to live in the life of ‘modern civilization’. Prof. Sutjaya added that the rapid growth of tourism has also made Bali a strategic drug market. Drugs are ensnaring the younger generation of Bali who will inherit the Hindu culture in Bali. This fleeting pleasure will lead the youth of Bali to behave in ways that prioritizes pseudo-enjoyment. Tourism expansion and an increasingly large drug market, also fostered prostitution. Flourishing prostitution in Bali is presently being ignored by authorities. One of the impacts of wide spread prostitution that is already being felt is that AIDS is an ever increasing threat to young people. This and the aforementioned threats and pressures that Balinese people are now facing, are making the resistance of the people of Bali weak. Increasing economic competition and lack of skilled human resources are also threats to the Balinese way of life. For all of these reasons, the people of Bali need to be alert. “Balinese people must not allow themselves to be dissolved though the enjoyment of physical (tangible) pleasures and ignore their psychic (intangible) responsibilities,” he advised. External influences threaten local culture and spirituality
GIANYAR - Undeniably, Bali has become a tourist attraction due to the cultural and spiritual activities of Balinese people. But what will becomes of this Paradise Island, that tourists and travellers come to visit, if various external economic-based challenges continue to shift the culture? Ida Pedanda Made Gunung addressed his concern over such conditions, saying that Bali only has one Balinese generation left if things do not change for the better. This spiritual leader from Blahbatuh, Gianyar, mentioned that the world values Bali fro the activities, ways of life and religiosity that are unique to the island. “Maintaining Bali means that Balinese people show their compassion for nature, for humans and in their communication with God,” explained Ida Pedanda Made Gunung from Yogadiparamaguhya Ashram. He added that Balinese culture as we know it was created through the adoption of external influences such as we see in the Barong Landung, perforated coins as well as in vari-
ous types of carvings. “Around the twelfth century, external influences were incorporated into our culture. But now I see that external influence tend to be orientated towards economic aspects which are threaten to eliminate local values,” he said. The most worrying external influence that presently threatens Balinese values is the proposed inclusion of Besakih in the national tourism strategic plan (KSPN) that would allow hotel accommodations to be built near the sacred site, as well as the Benoa Bay reclamation project that threatens Bali environment. According to Ide Pedanda Gunung, these two plans could significantly impact the lives of balinese people. “We’d like to remind everyone that tourism on Bali can only survive and
thrive thanks to the religious and cultural activities of Bali, and not due to grand of tourist accommodation. In fact far more luxurious ones can be found in other countries,” he explained. Seeing this threat, Pedanda appealed to parents, educators and governments to focus on keeping young people on track by instilling Balinese values and traditions. Otherwise, Balinese people -who themselves are the basis of tourism in Bali, will no exist as Balinese people within just one generation. “Now, the role of catur guru (four-teacher concept) depends on parents guiding their children, and teachers cultivating traditional values and with the the government as policy makers,” he affirmed. Balinese Temple Ceremony
Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Mexico finds main skull rack at Aztec temple complex
MEXICO CITY — Archaeologists have found the main trophy rack of sacrificed human skulls at Mexico City’s Templo Mayor Aztec ruin site, scientists said Thursday. Racks known as “tzompantli” were where the Aztecs displayed the severed heads of sacrifice victims on wooden poles pushed through the sides of the skull. The poles were suspended horizontally on vertical posts. Eduardo Matos, an archaeologist at the National Institute of Anthropology and History, suggested the skull rack in Mexico City “was a show of might” by the Aztecs. Friends and even enemies were invited into the city, precisely to be cowed by the grisly display of heads in various stages of decomposition. Paintings and written descriptions from the early colonial period showed descriptions of such racks. But institute archaeologists said the newest discovery was different. Archaeologist Raul Barrera said that “there are 35 skulls that we can see, but there are many more” in underlying layers. “As we continue to dig the number is going to rise a lot.” Barrera noted that one Spanish writer soon after the conquest described mortared-together skulls, but none had been found before. University of Florida archaeologist Susan Gillespie, who was not involved in the project, wrote that “I do not personally know of other instances of literal skulls becoming architectural material to be mortared together to make a structure.” The find was made between February and June on the west-
ern side of what was once the Templo Mayor complex. The platform was partly excavated under the floor of a three-story colonial era house. Because the house was historically valuable, archaeologists often worked in narrow excavation wells six feet (two meters) under the floor level suspended on their stomachs on a wooden platform. Periodic excavations carried out since 1914 suggested a ceremonial site was located near the site. Barrera said the location fit very well with the first Spanish descriptions of the temple complex. Gillespie said archaeologists have found other tzompantli, which she said might be better translated as “head rack” instead of “skull rack” because the heads were put up for display while still fresh. But experts had long been searching for the main one. (ap)
Study sees dying wildlife, bigger fires if drought lasts SAN FRANCISCO — The carcasses of salmon, trout and more than a dozen other newly extinct native species lie in dry streambeds around California. Exhausted firefighters in the Sierra Nevada battle some of the biggest wildfires they’ve ever seen. And in Central Valley farm towns, more and more parents hear the squeal of empty pipes when they turn on water taps to cook dinner. A new report by the Public Policy Institute of California nonprofit think-tank paints that distressing picture of California for the next two years if the state’s driest four years on record stretches further into the future. Written by water and watershed experts working at the policy center, at the University of California, Davis, and elsewhere, the report urges California to do more now to deal with what researchers project to be the biggest drought crises of 2016
and 2017 — crashing wildlife populations, raging wildfires and more and more poor rural communities running out of water entirely. A separate study published Thursday in the journal of the American Geophysical Union warns that climate change is making drought the new normal in California. By the 2060s, climate models show California in a condition of semi-permanent drought, broken only by short, hard rains, researchers said. Already, higher temperatures from climate change have made the current drought at least 15 percent worse, they said. So far, of all the sectors dealing with the current drought, California cities are doing relatively well thanks to the lessons of past droughts, researchers said in the analysis by the Public Policy Institute of California.
Meanwhile, farms have been able to turn to pumping well water to make up for having half as much surface water for irrigation as normal. With California wildlife, by contrast, “we’re really looking at widespread crisis” if the drought continues, Ellen Hanak, director of the think-tank’s water policy center, said in an interview Wednesday. California’s fresh-water habitats and forests, along with their wildlife, have experienced the most severe impacts of the drought so far, the study concluded. Lack of water means 18 species of native California fish, including most native salmon and steelhead trout, face an immediate threat of going extinct in the wild, the report said. Greatly reduced water deliveries to bird refuges and rice fields — the flooding of which provides crucial habitat — means there is danger-
ously little room and food for the 5 million migratory birds that fly through the Central Valley each year and a high risk of deadly disease for the birds, the study said. For California’s environment, officials should be thinking more strategically about how best to use what water is left for wildlife, and preparing “conservation hatcheries” to safeguard native fish species that are on the verge of extinction in the wild, it said. Hanak also called wildfires a tremendous risk as overgrown forests dry in the drought. Fire and forest agencies already are working to reduce the overgrowth that contributes to making those fires bigger and harder to control, researchers said. After the environment, rural communities have been hardest-hit by the drought, the study said. As of last month, more than 2,000 domestic wells were reported to have gone
dry, mostly in the Central Valley and Sierra Nevada. More than 100 small public-water systems around the state have been cited as needing emergency water supplies. State and federal efforts to help those communities have been increasing but remain stop-gap, the study concluded. It urges the state to do more to track areas in need of help and come up with longer-term water supplies to replace wells that have likely gone dry for good. The study advises against counting on El Nino, a sporadic weather pattern that can bring strong storms, to break the drought. State water officials similarly have tried to temper public hopes for a wet El Nino year. El Nino is historically associated with wetter winters in California only half the time, and climate change makes that even more uncertain, the state Department of Water Resources has said. (ap)

Water crisis threatens Simantri livestock
BANGLI - The water crisis of the dry season is not only affecting members of the community but is also affecting the integrated agricultural system (SIMANTRI) of several villages, including Suter, Kintamani. Over the last few months, cattle there have had less and less water to consume every day so they have not grown to optimally. The group head of Suter’s local Simantri, I Nengah Nyeneng, said that they have had a lot of trouble finding drinking water for their cattle for the last two months. “Cattle need to drink a lot of water every day, but since the start of the dry season, we have had trouble providing them with enough to drink,” he explained. Nyeneng added that currently, the group raises 31 heads of cattle consisting of 21 parents and 10 calves. Every day, each cow needs about 20 liters of water. But because they there has been a water shortage they have had to reduce the amount of water that they give their cows, which in turn has meant that they have not reached optimum weight. “Farmers are forced to reduce the water volume for the cattle consumption. Finally, the
cattle have become slightly thinner than usual,” he said. Nyeneng explained that in order to maintain the health of their cattle, many farmers have been forced to carry water form their homes. Water which they obtained through assistance given by the Bangli Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) and the Province of Bali. The headman of Suter also helped provide water from the supply meant for public consumption.
“Some breeders bring water from their homes -about one jerry-can because they are worried about their cattle not drinking,” he said. Before the water crisis hit, the breeders relied on rainwater collected in two 3,300 liters tanks. Nyeneng hopes that the water supplied by government can not only be focused on public consumption, but can also be provided for their livestock. “We can only hope that the government will also
supply water for our livestock. Otherwise, yeah... we will use the water we have as best we can,” he sighed. Apart from the water crisis, Nyeneng said that farmers are also struggling to deal with the dwindling supply of cattle fodder. Elephant grass that is used as the main fodder has started to dry out and so have other grasses. “Our fodder stocks have been running thin. This will cause the weight of our cattle to decline,” he added. When asked about such conditions, Head of the Bangli Livestock Agency, I Wayan Sukartana, confirmed that a number of farmers in some regions, especially the Simantri group members, are having trouble finding drinking water for their livestock. In response to
such conditions, Sukartana said that he will immediatly coordinate with the BPBD Bangli and Social Services, who both have vehicles to transport water tanks. “We will coordinate immediately with Social Services and the BPBD to ask for help to supply water for cattle raising groups,” he said. A crispy snack with typical flavor Gilimanuk Police confiscate contraband dogs When traveling on the Island of the Gods, try to enjoy the peculiarities of loteng sela (a peanut brittle made from cassava). This traditional food is a kind of snack having become a favorite for the Hindu community in Bali. Moreover, farming communities that live in rural areas used to eat rice with side dish like this loteng sela. It is often called crackers or potato chips because it is made from cassava as the main ingredient. In other areas, this loteng sela is called peanut brittle. It is oval and thin with the size of about 10-15 cm x 15-20 cm, so that it becomes crispier when being fried. In the 1980s, it was famous snack in Tabanan area. Children, teenagers and adults made this food as their refreshment enjoyed while chatting in the afternoon until night. Other than being cheap, it is also very easy to get. Virtually all families can make it. It happens because farmers used to grow cassava other than rice. They prefer to grow this cassava because it can be used to mix with rice for daily food. Recently, the mixed rice seems to have been abandoned. People prefer to eat pure rice (rice without mixture). Likewise the cassava starts to be abandoned and people prefer modern instant food. Children also assume the loteng sela an old fashioned food. Nevertheless, the loteng sela is
still produced by the community so far. It can be found at stalls, food stores and supermarket. It has been served in beautiful plastic packaging and the price is already determined. The main ingredient used is cassava. After being peeled out, it is grated and squeezed to reduce the water content. Its spice consists of garlic, aromatic ginger, turmeric, chili, coriander, chili and salt. For those wishing to get a different taste, it can be added with flavoring to taste.
All the spices are grounded and then mixed together with grated cassava. After that, stir it until finely blended. Put some amount of the batter on a banana leaf pre-smeared with coconut oil and then flattened. Make oval shape and press again and again to make it thinner. Steam and dry under the sun to dry. Having dried out, remove from the banana leaf and fry on preheated pan to be cooked and tasteful. Now, it is ready to be served.
NEGARA - The ranks of the Gilimanuk Marine Police conducted inspections at the checkpoint of the entrance to Bali at Gilimanuk where they confiscated five contraband dogs last weekend. There were three Belgian malinois and two dobermen. The owners of the dogs who were transporting the animals form Surabaya to Denpasar, were not in posesion of health certificate from the region of origin. The dogs were being transported in a metallic green Toyota Land Cruiser vehicle with license plate B 1202 YA driven by Lucky Lee J. Tahuttu, 43, from Sengguan Kawan hamlet, Gianyar subdistrict. The driver and the evidence are are being held by the officers of Gilimanuk Marine Police for further processing. \Chief of the Gilimanuk Marine Police, Nyoman Wirya Sucipta, accompanied by Chief of Criminal Investigation Unit Julkifli Ritonga with permission from the Chief of Jembrana Police confirmed the arrest. Kayuambua Market overloaded, vendors peddle on roadside

BANGLI - The number of vendors at Kayuambua Market, Susut subdistrict, has exceeded capacity, forcing hundreds of vendors to sell their wares on the roadside thereby giving a rundown, crowded and chaotic look to the area.
Upon entering the market area, the chaos is immediately felt. Hundreds of vendors fill the courtyard and sidewalks leaving no space for pedestrians. Apparently the vendors have no concern for people being forced to walk in the street. In addition, garbage heaps were also seen to be disturbing the market. Head of Kayuamba Market, Wayan Sukarma, did not dismiss the fact that capacity of the market is overloaded causing vendors to spread out onto the courtyard and side walks. “The market has 836 vendors, only 500 of which have access to market stalls” he explained. Sukrama added, that in addition to making the market look chaotic, the overload of vendors is also causing problems for the janitors who cannot keep up with the amount of garbage produced. “Janitors now have to deal with garbage left on the roadside,” said Sukarma from his office. He admitted that the vendors that have set up shop in the courtyard are still subject to a levy, but they pay less than those who have stalls in the market. As for the possibility of creating market stalls for the all of the vendors, Sukarma said that the challenge is the lack of space. For the time being, the market is trying to make do. “We are trying to maximize the use of the existing location while we wait for repairs to and expansion of the market,” he said.

Three foreigners conspire to steal a bag
MANGUPURA - Three foreign citizens with the initials JJY, 60, SPR, 60, and RV, 59, were arrested by security guards at a hotel in Seminyak, Kuta on Sunday (Aug. 23). The three tourists from Peru were allegedly involved in the theft of a bag belonging to hotel guest, Rafael Signes Reine, while having breakfast at the hotel restaurant. According to the officer from the Denpasar Police, the theft occurred on Friday (Aug. 14) at 7:40 a.m. While the victim went to get food at the buffet, she left her
bag at there table. When she returned, her bag that contained an iPhone 6, wallet, cash worth IDR 1,350,000, EUR 400, CNY 1,200 and credit cards was gone. The case was then reported to the Kuta police. On Sunday morning around 7:15 a.m., Jurianto, the hotel security guard who was on duty at the time, saw three people who had similar characteristics to the thieves that he had seen on the CCTV footage two dys before. Jurianto then invited his colleague Manhuni to keep an eye on them. After a few minutes, one of
the culprits rushed out of the lobby and was immediately intercepted by the two security guards. While the security guards were asking him for his address, the two other culprits approached and were identified as being the same people that were seen on the CCTV footage. “The three culprits were immediately secured and the incident was then reported to Kuta Police,” said Jurianto. The Kuta Police Operations Unit led by Eka Wisada, came down to the scene of the crime. While being interrogated by
the police, the three well dressed suspects claimed to come form Peru and be staying in Sanur. Then were then taken to the police station. When asked about the incident, Chief of Kuta Police Criminal Investigation Unit, Dewa Tagel Wijarsa, with permission from the police chief, confirmed that the three men who were arrested, were in fact the thieves. Bangkok blast probe hindered by broken security cameras BANGKOK — Up to 75 percent of the security cameras were broken along the getaway path taken by the main suspect in last week’s deadly Bangkok bombing, Thailand’s police chief said Monday, revealing a major obstacle to an investigation that has only fuzzy images of the still-unidentified man. Investigators are trying to “put pieces of the puzzle together” but have had to use their imagination to fill holes left by cameras that failed to record his movements, said national police chief Somyot Poompanmoung, openly frustrated as he spoke to reporters one week after the blast. “For example, the perpetrator was driving away — escaping — and there are CCTV cameras following him. Police have questioned a motorcycle taxi driver believed to have driven the suspect away. The driver told police the man handed him a piece of paper saying “Lumpini Park,” the city’s largest park which is near the shrine. But none of the security cameras worked along the route to the park, Somyot said. Police have tried to chase a report that after the suspect got off the motorcycle at the park, he went into a nearby hospital and changed into a grey T-shirt, Somyot said. “We went to see if this is true and checked the CCTV cameras at Chulalungkorn Hospital. Kiev celebrates Ukrainian Independence Day
KIEV, Ukraine — Thousands of servicemen marched in downtown Kiev on Monday to mark Ukraine’s Independence Day. The troops carried rifles but, unlike last year, the parade did not feature any of the more powerful weaponry which could be viewed as sensitive as Ukraine is mired in a conflict between government forces and Russia-backed separatists. The conflict in the east, which has claimed more than 6,800 lives since it began in April 2014, saw a major uptick in violence last week with nine civilians and soldiers killed in just one day. Speaking at the parade, President Petro Poroshenko said Ukraine would continue to increase its troop numbers in order to fend off the attacks of separatist rebels. The press office of the Ukrainian military operation in the
east said Monday that the rebels violated the cease-fire 82 times overnight, in some cases with large-caliber weapons that should have been withdrawn in line with a truce signed in February. In Rome, Pope Francis made his latest appeal for the end of fighting on the eve of the Independence Day. “I renew my heartfelt appeal, so that the commitments undertaken to achieve pacification are respected, and with the help of organizations and people of good will, the humanitarian emergency in the country is responded to,” Francis told tens of thousands of people gathered Sunday at the Vatican in St. Peter’s Square for his traditional window appearance. “May the Lord give peace to the beloved Ukrainian land, which is preparing to celebrate the national holiday tomorrow.” (ap)
Pakistan rescues Chinese tourist held by the Taliban
ISLAMABAD — A Chinese tourist held hostage for months by the Taliban has been freed in a government operation, Pakistani Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said. Khan made the announcement in a press conference late Sunday night that was broadcast Monday on multiple TV channels. He said the man will be handed over to Chinese authorities soon. “Our intelligence agencies are proud of rescuing the captive,” he said. “Chinese authorities, whenever we meet, would always ask about the captive. Thank God, now, we have him.” There was no immediate comment from the Chinese embassy in Islamabad on the rescue operation. Khan did not identify the Chinese national and did not provide details
on the rescue. The only Chinese national known to be held by the Taliban is Hong Xudong, who was abducted in May 2014 near the northwestern Pakistani city of Dera Ismail Khan. Hong had entered the country from India and had been travelling around Pakistan by bicycle. The kidnapping was claimed by a splinter group of the Pakistani Taliban. A video released in May 2015 showed a man identified as Hong asking the Chinese government to honor his kidnappers’ unspecified ransom demands. The Pakistani Taliban is an umbrella group of various local Islamic militant groups bent upon overthrowing the government to install their own harsh brand of Islamic law.(ap)

Oil prices also fell further after sliding below $40 a barrel before the weekend for the first time in six years. “China’s contribution to a potential global slowdown has unsettled markets again this morning,” said Richard Hunter, head of equities at Hargreaves Lansdown Stockbrokers. He added that the downward move was “exacerbated by light volumes as the City (London’s
financial district) waits to return to full strength at the end of this holiday month.” Shanghai shares collapsed on Monday as Beijing’s latest intervention failed to restore confidence, with concern mounting about the stalling economy. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index closed down 297.83 points at 3,209.91 points, after falling as much as nine percent during trading. Tokyo’s Nikkei index was also swept lower as worries deepened about China’s economy. The Nikkei 225 entered a correction as it dived 4.61 percent, or 895.15 points, to end at 18,540.68 -- its lowest point since February. In the latest move at the weekend, China said it will allow its huge state pension fund to invest up to 30 percent of its assets in stocks. Survey: Most economists say Fed will raise rates in 2015
NEW YORK — The vast majority of business economists expect the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates before the end of the year, according to a survey released Monday. Minutes from the Fed’s meeting in late July showed that officials could raise rates as early as September. Seventy-seven percent of survey respondents believe the Fed will raise rates from their current near-zero levels, but only 37 percent of respondents believe it will happen as soon as next month. The survey was done by the National As-
sociation of Business Economics. When it surveyed its members in March, 71 percent of economists believed the Fed would raise rates in 2015. “A large and growing majority of business economists expects the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) to raise its target for the federal funds rate before the end of 2015,” NABE President John Silvia, chief economist at Wells Fargo, said in a statement. With only two more appropriate Fed meetings left in 2015, most NABE economists believe the Fed will raise rates at
their December meeting. The Fed’s next scheduled meeting is September 16 and 17, which will be followed by a news conference by Fed Chair Janet Yellen. Fed policymakers have said they greatly prefer raising rates at a meeting where a news conference is scheduled. The next one would be December 15 and 16. If the U.S. economy continues to improve at its current pace, economists say the Fed’s interest rate will eventually top out at 3 percent. Inflation is also expected to remain relatively low, according to the
survey, with 73 percent of respondents expecting inflation to rise to 2 percent — the Fed’s goal — by 2019. Half of economists surveyed believed the government’s current spending levels were “about right” while 29 percent said government spending was “too restrictive.” A slight majority of economists said policymakers should look at places like Medicare and Medicaid, defense spending and other entitlement programs as places to cut spending long-term. The delivery is only made once a month amounting to 2,000 pieces of crafts in the form of bamboo root masks. When asked about the cause of the decline in the orders, Sudanco suspected that it happens due to economic crisis in the country of destination. “Exactly I do not know what causes the orders to diminish. Police also arrested a drug dealer deliberately coming from Java to Bali, SAM (21), Saturday (Aug. 22) on Jalan Ciung Wanara Renon, Denpasar. He arrived in Denpasar four days before being captured on Jalan Pulau Galang Pemogan, Denpasar. China plans to boost penalties for sex with girls under 14 BEIJING — Chinese state media say China is planning harsher penalties for men who have sex with girls under 14, following public outrage over high-profile offenders including teachers. Under the new law, all such cases would be considered rape because another criminal charge that served as a loophole for some offenders would be eliminated. The state-run China News Service said Monday the crime of
“prostitution with underage girls” would be removed from China’s penal code under the revision being considered by lawmakers. If the bill is approved, any sex with girls under 14 would be considered rape and subject to harsher penalties, including death. The coast guard said it had rescued six people and recovered the body of two men, and was searching the area for the missing. It was alerted after a fishing boat picked up one person off the island’s eastern coast Monday morning, and a second managed to swim to the island. The two told authorities they had been in a boat carrying about 15 people when it overturned. Greece has been overwhelmed by an influx of mainly refugees reaching its islands from Turkey. The Greek coast guard said it had picked up 877 people in 30 search and rescue operations from Friday morning to Monday morning near the islands of Lesbos, Chios, Samos and Kos. The figures do not include the hundreds to manage to make it to the islands themselves, mostly in inflatable dinghies. (ap)

JAKARTA - Chief Commissioner General Anang Iskandar of the National Narcotic Agency (BNN) has warned Indonesian migrant workers abroad against accepting drugs and other items entrusted to them by unfamiliar people. “The Indonesian migrant workers abroad should focus on earning money for their families at home and should not get involved in drug syndicates,” Iskandar noted in a press statement on Monday. Acquainting Indonesian migrant workers in Hong Kong with the dangers of drugs, the BNN chief shed light on the various modus operandi used by drug syndicates for recruitment, and tips on what they should do to anticipate it. Iskandar expressed hope that the migrant workers would increase their understanding and awareness of the dangers of drug circulation and not be easily tempted by lucrative wages offered by drug syndicates. He remarked that of all the drug cases unveiled by the BNN, some of them are related to smuggling and involved Indonesian migrant workers abroad, especially women. Among the destination countries of migrant workers, Hong Kong is one of the countries often exploited by international drug syndicates to recruit Indonesian migrant workers as couriers for trafficking illicit materials. According to the Indonesian Consulate Office, some 28 migrant workers are currently residing in Hong Kong, and 53 were involved in drug-related legal cases in 2014. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has been in crisis since the results of thousands of blood tests were leaked in early August, forcing it to defend the sport against allegations of widespread doping. In that context, the blue riband sprint at the 15th world championships was variously cast as a morality play, a fight between good and evil and a nine-point-something seconds battle for the soul of the sport. It pitched Bolt, whose status as a sporting icon was recently compared to that of the boxer Muhammad Ali by IAAF president-elect Seb Coe, against American Justin Gatlin, who has lost five years of his career to doping bans. On Sunday, the Jamaican delivered victory in a time of 9.79 seconds that was far from his fastest but with a gutsy performance that will rank as one of his greatest. Bolt had already rejected a role as the saviour of his sport and he was no more inclined to accept the mantle after beating Gatlin into second place by one hundredth of a second. “That’s for you guys to decide,” the 29-year-old said. “You guys are the ones that have been saying I need to save the sport so you have to write about that. “For me I came here to add to my legendary status, to win and to continue my championship rights, so that’s the focus.” UNBEATEN RUN The victory maintained an unbeaten run in major global sprints

Furious Sebastian Vettel says Pirelli ‘unacceptable’
Sebastian Vettel has called Formula 1 tyre supplier Pirelli’s performance “unacceptable” after a blowout on his Ferrari cost him third in the Belgian Grand Prix. Ferrari was attempting a unique one-stop strategy in the Spa F1 race, with Vettel changing from softs to mediums on lap 14 and then running to the finish on lap 43. He was fending off Romain Grosjean for third place on the penultimate lap when his right rear tyre gave way on the Kemmel Straight. A furious Vettel said he could have been badly injured had the tyre blown at Eau Rouge. “Things like that are not allowed to happen,” he told the BBC. “If it happened 200 metres earlier, I’m not standing here now, I’d be stuck in Eau Rouge. “I don’t know what else needs to happen. “I tell you what’s upsetting. Scolari looking for elusive Asian title with Guangzhou
SEOUL, South Korea — Guangzhou Evergrande coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has a point to prove after past failures in the Asian Champions League, and with his star studded Chinese team in fine form, there is much to be confident about going into the quarterfinals. The 2002 World Cup winning coach was hired by Uzbekistan’s Bunyokdor in 2009 charged with delivering the continental crown. The Tashkent team was eliminated at the 2009 quarterfinals and only made it as far as the second round in 2010 before the Brazilian left. Scolari returned to Asia in June to succeed Fabio Cannavaro as coach of Guangzhou, a team that has won the last four Chinese Super League titles and the 2013 Asian Champions League. “The last time I fought on this stage was in 2010, but now the strangeness and equally the familiarity is coming back to me following my experience with Bunyodkor,” Scolari was quoted on the Asian Football Confederation’s official website. “I’m excited to be back with a team like Guangzhou. Guangzhou have a strong squad full of top players.” Guangzhou is regarded as the front runner among the eight teams remaining in the tournament, especially after strengthening its squad in the summer with the signing Brazilian internationals Paulinho and Robinho. Brendan Rodgers has defended the perceived change in Liverpool’s playing style brought on by the inclusion of Christian Benteke and said the tall Belgian striker gives his side an element of unpredictability they were lacking last season. Scolari looking for elusive Asian title with Guangzhou
SEOUL, South Korea — Guangzhou Evergrande coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has a point to prove after past failures in the Asian Champions League, and with his star studded Chinese team in fine form, there is much to be confident about going into the quarterfinals. The 2002 World Cup winning coach was hired by Uzbekistan’s Bunyokdor in 2009 charged with delivering the continental crown. The Tashkent team was eliminated at the 2009 quarterfinals and only made it as far as the second round in 2010 before the Brazilian left. Scolari returned to Asia in June to succeed Fabio Cannavaro as coach of Guangzhou, a team that has won the last four Chinese Super League titles and the 2013 Asian Champions League. “The last time I fought on this stage was in 2010, but now the strangeness and equally the familiarity is coming back to me following my experience with Bunyodkor,” Scolari was quoted on the Asian Football Confederation’s official website. “I’m excited to be back with a team like Guangzhou. Guangzhou have a strong squad full of top players.” Guangzhou is regarded as the front runner among the eight teams remaining in the tournament, especially after strengthening its squad in the summer with the signing Brazilian internationals Paulinho and Robinho. In that context, the blue riband sprint at the 15th world championships was variously cast as a morality play, a fight between good and evil and a nine-point-something seconds battle for the soul of the sport. It pitched Bolt, whose status as a sporting icon was recently compared to that of the boxer Muhammad Ali by IAAF president-elect Seb Coe, against American Justin Gatlin, who has lost five years of his career to doping bans. On Sunday, the Jamaican delivered victory in a time of 9.79 seconds that was far from his fastest but with a gutsy performance that will rank as one of his greatest. Bolt had already rejected a role as the saviour of his sport and he was no more inclined to accept the mantle after beating Gatlin into second place by one hundredth of a second. “That’s for you guys to decide,” the 29-year-old said. “You guys are the ones that have been saying I need to save the sport so you have to write about that. “For me I came here to add to my legendary status, to win and to continue my championship rights, so that’s the focus.” UNBEATEN RUN The victory maintained an unbeaten run in major global sprints

China plans to boost penalties for sex with girls under 14 BEIJING — Chinese state media say China is planning harsher penalties for men who have sex with girls under 14, following public outrage over high-profile offenders including teachers. Under the new law, all such cases would be considered rape because another criminal charge that served as a loophole for some offenders would be eliminated. The state-run China News Service said Monday the crime of
“prostitution with underage girls” would be removed from China’s penal code under the revision being considered by lawmakers. If the bill is approved, any sex with girls under 14 would be considered rape and subject to harsher penalties, including death. JAKARTA - Chief Commissioner General Anang Iskandar of the National Narcotic Agency (BNN) has warned Indonesian migrant workers abroad against accepting drugs and other items entrusted to them by unfamiliar people. “The Indonesian migrant workers abroad should focus on earning money for their families at home and should not get involved in drug syndicates,” Iskandar noted in a press statement on Monday. Acquainting Indonesian migrant workers in Hong Kong with the dangers of drugs, the BNN chief shed light on the various modus operandi used by drug syndicates for recruitment, and tips on what they should do to anticipate it. Iskandar expressed hope that the migrant workers would increase their understanding and awareness of the dangers of drug circulation and not be easily tempted by lucrative wages offered by drug syndicates. He remarked that of all the drug cases unveiled by the BNN, some of them are related to smuggling and involved Indonesian migrant workers abroad, especially women. Among the destination countries of migrant workers, Hong Kong is one of the countries often exploited by international drug syndicates to recruit Indonesian migrant workers as couriers for trafficking illicit materials. According to the Indonesian Consulate Office, some 28 migrant workers are currently residing in Hong Kong, and 53 were involved in drug-related legal cases in 2014. Oil prices also fell further after sliding below $40 a barrel before the weekend for the first time in six years. “China’s contribution to a potential global slowdown has unsettled markets again this morning,” said Richard Hunter, head of equities at Hargreaves Lansdown Stockbrokers. He added that the downward move was “exacerbated by light volumes as the City (London’s

Survey: Most economists say Fed will raise rates in 2015
NEW YORK — The vast majority of business economists expect the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates before the end of the year, according to a survey released Monday. Minutes from the Fed’s meeting in late July showed that officials could raise rates as early as September. Seventy-seven percent of survey respondents believe the Fed will raise rates from their current near-zero levels, but only 37 percent of respondents believe it will happen as soon as next month. The survey was done by the National As-
sociation of Business Economics. When it surveyed its members in March, 71 percent of economists believed the Fed would raise rates in 2015. “A large and growing majority of business economists expects the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) to raise its target for the federal funds rate before the end of 2015,” NABE President John Silvia, chief economist at Wells Fargo, said in a statement. With only two more appropriate Fed meetings left in 2015, most NABE economists believe the Fed will raise rates at
their December meeting. The Fed’s next scheduled meeting is September 16 and 17, which will be followed by a news conference by Fed Chair Janet Yellen. Fed policymakers have said they greatly prefer raising rates at a meeting where a news conference is scheduled. The next one would be December 15 and 16. If the U.S. economy continues to improve at its current pace, economists say the Fed’s interest rate will eventually top out at 3 percent. Inflation is also expected to remain relatively low, according to the
survey, with 73 percent of respondents expecting inflation to rise to 2 percent — the Fed’s goal — by 2019. Half of economists surveyed believed the government’s current spending levels were “about right” while 29 percent said government spending was “too restrictive.” A slight majority of economists said policymakers should look at places like Medicare and Medicaid, defense spending and other entitlement programs as places to cut spending long-term. Kayuambua Market overloaded, vendors peddle on roadside

BANGLI - The number of vendors at Kayuambua Market, Susut subdistrict, has exceeded capacity, forcing hundreds of vendors to sell their wares on the roadside thereby giving a rundown, crowded and chaotic look to the area.
Upon entering the market area, the chaos is immediately felt. Hundreds of vendors fill the courtyard and sidewalks leaving no space for pedestrians. Apparently the vendors have no concern for people being forced to walk in the street. In addition, garbage heaps were also seen to be disturbing the market. Head of Kayuamba Market, Wayan Sukarma, did not dismiss the fact that capacity of the market is overloaded causing vendors to spread out onto the courtyard and side walks. “The market has 836 vendors, only 500 of which have access to market stalls” he explained. Sukrama added, that in addition to making the market look chaotic, the overload of vendors is also causing problems for the janitors who cannot keep up with the amount of garbage produced. “Janitors now have to deal with garbage left on the roadside,” said Sukarma from his office. He admitted that the vendors that have set up shop in the courtyard are still subject to a levy, but they pay less than those who have stalls in the market. As for the possibility of creating market stalls for the all of the vendors, Sukarma said that the challenge is the lack of space. For the time being, the market is trying to make do. “We are trying to maximize the use of the existing location while we wait for repairs to and expansion of the market,” he said.

Three foreigners conspire to steal a bag
MANGUPURA - Three foreign citizens with the initials JJY, 60, SPR, 60, and RV, 59, were arrested by security guards at a hotel in Seminyak, Kuta on Sunday (Aug. 23). The three tourists from Peru were allegedly involved in the theft of a bag belonging to hotel guest, Rafael Signes Reine, while having breakfast at the hotel restaurant. According to the officer from the Denpasar Police, the theft occurred on Friday (Aug. 14) at 7:40 a.m. While the victim went to get food at the buffet, she left her
bag at there table. When she returned, her bag that contained an iPhone 6, wallet, cash worth IDR 1,350,000, EUR 400, CNY 1,200 and credit cards was gone. While the security guards were asking him for his address, the two other culprits approached and were identified as being the same people that were seen on the CCTV footage. “The three culprits were immediately secured and the incident was then reported to Kuta Police,” said Jurianto. the police, the three well dressed suspects claimed to come form Peru and be staying in Sanur. Then were then taken to the police station. When asked about the incident, Chief of Kuta Police Criminal Investigation Unit, Dewa Tagel Wijarsa, with permission from the police chief, confirmed that the three men who were arrested, were in fact the thieves. Bangkok blast probe hindered by broken security cameras BANGKOK — Up to 75 percent of the security cameras were broken along the getaway path taken by the main suspect in last week’s deadly Bangkok bombing, Thailand’s police chief said Monday, revealing a major obstacle to an investigation that has only fuzzy images of the still-unidentified man. Investigators are trying to “put pieces of the puzzle together” but have had to use their imagination to fill holes left by cameras that failed to record his movements, said national police chief Somyot Poompanmoung, openly frustrated as he spoke to reporters one week after the blast. “For example, the perpetrator was driving away — escaping — and there are CCTV cameras following him. Sometimes there were 20 cameras on the street but only five worked,” Somyot said. “Fifteen were broken, for whatever reason, they didn’t work.” “The footage jumps around from one camera to another, and for the missing parts police have had to use their imagination,” he said. “We’ve had to waste time connecting the dots.” Another challenge is that investigators lack sophisticated equipment like police use on the popular TV
crime series CSI to render blurry video clear, he said. “Have you seen CSI?” Somyot asked reporters. “We don’t have those things.” One week after last Monday’s bombing at the capital’s revered Erawan Shrine, which left 20 people dead and more than 120 injured, police appeared no closer to tracking down suspects or determining a motive for the attack. Police have faced criticism for sending mixed messages and stating theories as if they were fact, only to later retract them. Somyot said Monday that investigators were still trying to determine the suspect’s nationality and whereabouts. Asked if the suspect was still in Thailand, Somyot said, “I don’t know.” “I still believe he is in Thailand because I have no evidence to confirm otherwise,” he said. Over the weekend, police spokesman Prawut Thawornsiri said he suspected the man may have left the country.
Police have released an artist’s sketch of the suspect who was seen in security camera video from the open-air shrine leaving a backpack at a bench and walking away 15 minutes before the explosion. A separate camera showed the suspect, wearing a yellow T-shirt, on the back of a motorcycle taxi leaving the site. Police have questioned a motorcycle taxi driver believed to have driven the suspect away. The driver told police the man handed him a piece of paper saying “Lumpini Park,” the city’s largest park which is near the shrine. But none of the security cameras worked along the route to the park, Somyot said. Police have tried to chase a report that after the suspect got off the motorcycle at the park, he went into a nearby hospital and changed into a grey T-shirt, Somyot said. “We went to see if this is true and checked the CCTV cameras at Chulalungkorn Hospital. But we found that all the cameras were broken,” he said, laughing nervously, and asking for understanding because police had been working nonstop and were tired. (ap)

Kiev celebrates Ukrainian Independence Day
KIEV, Ukraine — Thousands of servicemen marched in downtown Kiev on Monday to mark Ukraine’s Independence Day. The troops carried rifles but, unlike last year, the parade did not feature any of the more powerful weaponry which could be viewed as sensitive as Ukraine is mired in a conflict between government forces and Russia-backed separatists. The conflict in the east, which has claimed more than 6,800 lives since it began in April 2014, saw a major uptick in violence last week with nine civilians and soldiers killed in just one day. Speaking at the parade, President Petro Poroshenko said Ukraine would continue to increase its troop numbers in order to fend off the attacks of separatist rebels. The press office of the Ukrainian military operation in the
east said Monday that the rebels violated the cease-fire 82 times overnight, in some cases with large-caliber weapons that should have been withdrawn in line with a truce signed in February. In Rome, Pope Francis made his latest appeal for the end of fighting on the eve of the Independence Day. “I renew my heartfelt appeal, so that the commitments undertaken to achieve pacification are respected, and with the help of organizations and people of good will, the humanitarian emergency in the country is responded to,” Francis told tens of thousands of people gathered Sunday at the Vatican in St. Peter’s Square for his traditional window appearance. “May the Lord give peace to the beloved Ukrainian land, which is preparing to celebrate the national holiday tomorrow.” (ap)
Pakistan rescues Chinese tourist held by the Taliban
ISLAMABAD — A Chinese tourist held hostage for months by the Taliban has been freed in a government operation, Pakistani Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said. Khan made the announcement in a press conference late Sunday night that was broadcast Monday on multiple TV channels. He said the man will be handed over to Chinese authorities soon. “Our intelligence agencies are proud of rescuing the captive,” he said. “Chinese authorities, whenever we meet, would always ask about the captive. Thank God, now, we have him.” There was no immediate comment from the Chinese embassy in Islamabad on the rescue operation. Khan did not identify the Chinese national and did not provide details
on the rescue. The only Chinese national known to be held by the Taliban is Hong Xudong, who was abducted in May 2014 near the northwestern Pakistani city of Dera Ismail Khan. Hong had entered the country from India and had been travelling around Pakistan by bicycle. The kidnapping was claimed by a splinter group of the Pakistani Taliban. A video released in May 2015 showed a man identified as Hong asking the Chinese government to honor his kidnappers’ unspecified ransom demands. The Pakistani Taliban is an umbrella group of various local Islamic militant groups bent upon overthrowing the government to install their own harsh brand of Islamic law.(ap)

Mexico finds main skull rack at Aztec temple complex
MEXICO CITY — Archaeologists have found the main trophy rack of sacrificed human skulls at Mexico City’s Templo Mayor Aztec ruin site, scientists said Thursday. Racks known as “tzompantli” were where the Aztecs displayed the severed heads of sacrifice victims on wooden poles pushed through the sides of the skull. The poles were suspended horizontally on vertical posts. Eduardo Matos, an archaeologist at the National Institute of Anthropology and History, suggested the skull rack in Mexico City “was a show of might” by the Aztecs. Friends and even enemies were invited into the city, precisely to be cowed by the grisly display of heads in various stages of decomposition. Paintings and written descriptions from the early colonial period showed descriptions of such racks. But institute archaeologists said the newest discovery was different. Archaeologist Raul Barrera said that “there are 35 skulls that we can see, but there are many more” in underlying layers. “As we continue to dig the number is going to rise a lot.” Barrera noted that one Spanish writer soon after the conquest described mortared-together skulls, but none had been found before. University of Florida archaeologist Susan Gillespie, who was not involved in the project, wrote that “I do not personally know of other instances of literal skulls becoming architectural material to be mortared together to make a structure.” The find was made between February and June on the west-
ern side of what was once the Templo Mayor complex. The platform was partly excavated under the floor of a three-story colonial era house. Because the house was historically valuable, archaeologists often worked in narrow excavation wells six feet (two meters) under the floor level suspended on their stomachs on a wooden platform. Periodic excavations carried out since 1914 suggested a ceremonial site was located near the site. Barrera said the location fit very well with the first Spanish descriptions of the temple complex. Gillespie said archaeologists have found other tzompantli, which she said might be better translated as “head rack” instead of “skull rack” because the heads were put up for display while still fresh. But experts had long been searching for the main one. (ap)
Study sees dying wildlife, bigger fires if drought lasts SAN FRANCISCO — The carcasses of salmon, trout and more than a dozen other newly extinct native species lie in dry streambeds around California. Exhausted firefighters in the Sierra Nevada battle some of the biggest wildfires they’ve ever seen. And in Central Valley farm towns, more and more parents hear the squeal of empty pipes when they turn on water taps to cook dinner. A new report by the Public Policy Institute of California nonprofit think-tank paints that distressing picture of California for the next two years if the state’s driest four years on record stretches further into the future. Written by water and watershed experts working at the policy center, at the University of California, Davis, and elsewhere, the report urges California to do more now to deal with what researchers project to be the biggest drought crises of 2016
and 2017 — crashing wildlife populations, raging wildfires and more and more poor rural communities running out of water entirely. A separate study published Thursday in the journal of the American Geophysical Union warns that climate change is making drought the new normal in California. By the 2060s, climate models show California in a condition of semi-permanent drought, broken only by short, hard rains, researchers said. Already, higher temperatures from climate change have made the current drought at least 15 percent worse, they said. So far, of all the sectors dealing with the current drought, California cities are doing relatively well thanks to the lessons of past droughts, researchers said in the analysis by the Public Policy Institute of California.
Meanwhile, farms have been able to turn to pumping well water to make up for having half as much surface water for irrigation as normal. With California wildlife, by contrast, “we’re really looking at widespread crisis” if the drought continues, Ellen Hanak, director of the think-tank’s water policy center, said in an interview Wednesday. California’s fresh-water habitats and forests, along with their wildlife, have experienced the most severe impacts of the drought so far, the study concluded. Lack of water means 18 species of native California fish, including most native salmon and steelhead trout, face an immediate threat of going extinct in the wild, the report said. Greatly reduced water deliveries to bird refuges and rice fields — the flooding of which provides crucial habitat — means there is danger-
ously little room and food for the 5 million migratory birds that fly through the Central Valley each year and a high risk of deadly disease for the birds, the study said. For California’s environment, officials should be thinking more strategically about how best to use what water is left for wildlife, and preparing “conservation hatcheries” to safeguard native fish species that are on the verge of extinction in the wild, it said. Hanak also called wildfires a tremendous risk as overgrown forests dry in the drought. Fire and forest agencies already are working to reduce the overgrowth that contributes to making those fires bigger and harder to control, researchers said. After the environment, rural communities have been hardest-hit by the drought, the study said. As of last month, more than 2,000 domestic wells were reported to have gone
dry, mostly in the Central Valley and Sierra Nevada. More than 100 small public-water systems around the state have been cited as needing emergency water supplies. State and federal efforts to help those communities have been increasing but remain stop-gap, the study concluded. It urges the state to do more to track areas in need of help and come up with longer-term water supplies to replace wells that have likely gone dry for good. The study advises against counting on El Nino, a sporadic weather pattern that can bring strong storms, to break the drought. State water officials similarly have tried to temper public hopes for a wet El Nino year. El Nino is historically associated with wetter winters in California only half the time, and climate change makes that even more uncertain, the state Department of Water Resources has said. (ap)

Water crisis threatens Simantri livestock
BANGLI - The water crisis of the dry season is not only affecting members of the community but is also affecting the integrated agricultural system (SIMANTRI) of several villages, including Suter, Kintamani. Over the last few months, cattle there have had less and less water to consume every day so they have not grown to optimally. The group head of Suter’s local Simantri, I Nengah Nyeneng, said that they have had a lot of trouble finding drinking water for their cattle for the last two months. “Cattle need to drink a lot of water every day, but since the start of the dry season, we have had trouble providing them with enough to drink,” he explained. Nyeneng added that currently, the group raises 31 heads of cattle consisting of 21 parents and 10 calves. Every day, each cow needs about 20 liters of water. But because they there has been a water shortage they have had to reduce the amount of water that they give their cows, which in turn has meant that they have not reached optimum weight. “Farmers are forced to reduce the water volume for the cattle consumption. Finally, the
cattle have become slightly thinner than usual,” he said. Nyeneng explained that in order to maintain the health of their cattle, many farmers have been forced to carry water form their homes. Water which they obtained through assistance given by the Bangli Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) and the Province of Bali. The headman of Suter also helped provide water from the supply meant for public consumption.
“Some breeders bring water from their homes -about one jerry-can because they are worried about their cattle not drinking,” he said. Before the water crisis hit, the breeders relied on rainwater collected in two 3,300 liters tanks. Nyeneng hopes that the water supplied by government can not only be focused on public consumption, but can also be provided for their livestock. “We can only hope that the government will also
supply water for our livestock. Otherwise, yeah... we will use the water we have as best we can,” he sighed. Apart from the water crisis, Nyeneng said that farmers are also struggling to deal with the dwindling supply of cattle fodder. Elephant grass that is used as the main fodder has started to dry out and so have other grasses. “Our fodder stocks have been running thin. This will cause the weight of our cattle to decline,” he added. When asked about such conditions, Head of the Bangli Livestock Agency, I Wayan Sukartana, confirmed that a number of farmers in some regions, especially the Simantri group members, are having trouble finding drinking water for their livestock. In response to
such conditions, Sukartana said that he will immediatly coordinate with the BPBD Bangli and Social Services, who both have vehicles to transport water tanks. “We will coordinate immediately with Social Services and the BPBD to ask for help to supply water for cattle raising groups,” he said. Earlier, the Head of the BPBD Bangli, I Wayan Karmawan, also acknowledged that the water supply for Suter village has prioritized human consumption and added that the needs of their livestock will be addressed later. “When we supply water to people’s homes, some farmers also expect to be given water for their cattle. We will respond to this after coordinating with relevant agencies,” he said. (kmb45)

A crispy snack with typical flavor Gilimanuk Police confiscate contraband dogs When traveling on the Island of the Gods, try to enjoy the peculiarities of loteng sela (a peanut brittle made from cassava). This traditional food is a kind of snack having become a favorite for the Hindu community in Bali. Moreover, farming communities that live in rural areas used to eat rice with side dish like this loteng sela. It is often called crackers or potato chips because it is made from cassava as the main ingredient. In other areas, this loteng sela is called peanut brittle. It is oval and thin with the size of about 10-15 cm x 15-20 cm, so that it becomes crispier when being fried. In the 1980s, it was famous snack in Tabanan area. Children, teenagers and adults made this food as their refreshment enjoyed while chatting in the afternoon until night. Other than being cheap, it is also very easy to get. Virtually all families can make it. It happens because farmers used to grow cassava other than rice. They prefer to grow this cassava because it can be used to mix with rice for daily food. Recently, the mixed rice seems to have been abandoned. People prefer to eat pure rice (rice without mixture). Likewise the cassava starts to be abandoned and people prefer modern instant food. Children also assume the loteng sela an old fashioned food. Nevertheless, the loteng sela is
still produced by the community so far. It can be found at stalls, food stores and supermarket. It has been served in beautiful plastic packaging and the price is already determined. The main ingredient used is cassava. After being peeled out, it is grated and squeezed to reduce the water content. Its spice consists of garlic, aromatic ginger, turmeric, chili, coriander, chili and salt. For those wishing to get a different taste, it can be added with flavoring to taste.
All the spices are grounded and then mixed together with grated cassava. After that, stir it until finely blended. Put some amount of the batter on a banana leaf pre-smeared with coconut oil and then flattened. Make oval shape and press again and again to make it thinner. Steam and dry under the sun to dry. Having dried out, remove from the banana leaf and fry on preheated pan to be cooked and tasteful. Now, it is ready to be served.
NEGARA - The ranks of the Gilimanuk Marine Police conducted inspections at the checkpoint of the entrance to Bali at Gilimanuk where they confiscated five contraband dogs last weekend. There were three Belgian malinois and two dobermen. The owners of the dogs who were transporting the animals form Surabaya to Denpasar, were not in posesion of health certificate from the region of origin. The dogs were being transported in a metallic green Toyota Land Cruiser vehicle with license plate B 1202 YA driven by Lucky Lee J. Tahuttu, 43, from Sengguan Kawan hamlet, Gianyar subdistrict. The driver and the evidence are are being held by the officers of Gilimanuk Marine Police for further processing. \Chief of the Gilimanuk Marine Police, Nyoman Wirya Sucipta, accompanied by Chief of Criminal Investigation Unit Julkifli Ritonga with permission from the Chief of Jembrana Police confirmed the arrest. Resistance on the part of Balinese people will continue to weaken due to their fragile economic position,” he said. Sutjaya predicts that if Balinese people who truly understand about their culture, do not take their moral responsibility -to make sure that this culture will be passed on to the next generation, very seriously, in just one generation the culture will be lost. This prediction will come true, he said, if Balinese people do not immediately become aware of the need to protect their territory from the grips of greedy capitalist and evil spirits who are invading the island. He also said that those who are only interested in making a profit are currently in control of the strategic sectors of the economy and also of the physical space of Bali, while evil spirits are beguiling the people of Bali through money laundering, drug trafficking and prostitution. Prof. Sutjaya affirms that the Bali tourism pie is now not only being eaten by people from Jakarta, and that much of the profits have also fled overseas. Tourism in Bali is also being managed with modernization in mind, and neglects Balinese architectural norms and values. The large numbers of people flocking to Bali are also squeezing Balinese locals out of the job market. What’s more, evil spirits are bringing in money and brokers, whose ventures are facilitated under various pretexts and by various means. Money laundering under the guise of investments are also driving up the prices of land and leave many with little choice but to sell their land which in turn causes many Balinese to become increasingly materialistic and engaged in consumer culture. Rather quickly Balinese people are being driven to live in the life of ‘modern civilization’. Prof. Sutjaya added that the rapid growth of tourism has also made Bali a strategic drug market. Drugs are ensnaring the younger generation of Bali who will inherit the Hindu culture in Bali. This fleeting pleasure will lead the youth of Bali to behave in ways that prioritizes pseudo-enjoyment. Tourism expansion and an increasingly large drug market, also fostered prostitution. Flourishing prostitution in Bali is presently being ignored by authorities. One of the impacts of wide spread prostitution that is already being felt is that AIDS is an ever increasing threat to young people. This and the aforementioned threats and pressures that Balinese people are now facing, are making the resistance of the people of Bali weak. Increasing economic competition and lack of skilled human resources are also threats to the Balinese way of life. For all of these reasons, the people of Bali need to be alert. “Balinese people must not allow themselves to be dissolved though the enjoyment of physical (tangible) pleasures and ignore their psychic (intangible) responsibilities,” he advised. External influences threaten local culture and spirituality
GIANYAR - Undeniably, Bali has become a tourist attraction due to the cultural and spiritual activities of Balinese people. But what will becomes of this Paradise Island, that tourists and travellers come to visit, if various external economic-based challenges continue to shift the culture? Ida Pedanda Made Gunung addressed his concern over such conditions, saying that Bali only has one Balinese generation left if things do not change for the better. This spiritual leader from Blahbatuh, Gianyar, mentioned that the world values Bali fro the activities, ways of life and religiosity that are unique to the island. “Maintaining Bali means that Balinese people show their compassion for nature, for humans and in their communication with God,” explained Ida Pedanda Made Gunung from Yogadiparamaguhya Ashram. He added that Balinese culture as we know it was created through the adoption of external influences such as we see in the Barong Landung, perforated coins as well as in vari-
ous types of carvings. “Around the twelfth century, external influences were incorporated into our culture. But now I see that external influence tend to be orientated towards economic aspects which are threaten to eliminate local values,” he said. The most worrying external influence that presently threatens Balinese values is the proposed inclusion of Besakih in the national tourism strategic plan (KSPN) that would allow hotel accommodations to be built near the sacred site, as well as the Benoa Bay reclamation project that threatens Bali environment. According to Ide Pedanda Gunung, these two plans could significantly impact the lives of balinese people. “We’d like to remind everyone that tourism on Bali can only survive and
thrive thanks to the religious and cultural activities of Bali, and not due to grand of tourist accommodation. In fact far more luxurious ones can be found in other countries,” he explained. Seeing this threat, Pedanda appealed to parents, educators and governments to focus on keeping young people on track by instilling Balinese values and traditions. Otherwise, Balinese people -who themselves are the basis of tourism in Bali, will no exist as Balinese people within just one generation. “Now, the role of catur guru (four-teacher concept) depends on parents guiding their children, and teachers cultivating traditional values and with the the government as policy makers,” he affirmed. Balinese Temple Ceremony
Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Owen Wilson says his father suffers from Alzheimer’s
DALLAS — Dallas-born actor Owen Wilson says that while his father having Alzheimer’s disease is “a rough thing,” he also knows that there are things to be grateful for, including that his father is being cared for at home and has people around who love him. “It is a rough thing,” Wilson told the Dallas Morning News in his first public comment about his 74-year-old father’s illness. “It’s one of those things where if somebody had said 10 years ago, when my dad and I were joking around, having a putting match, that this is the position your dad’s going to be in, where he basically needs 24-hour care, you’d think, ‘Gosh, I won’t be able to handle that. That’s just not possible,’” Wilson said. The actor, who grew up in Dallas, added: “You just have to do your
best to deal with it. You’ve got no choice but to accept it. And then, you sort of still look for the things to be grateful for.” His father, Robert A. “Bob” Wilson, is a longtime Dallas executive. He took charge of Dallas’ public television affiliate, KERA, in 1967. He hired Jim Lehrer from the Dallas Times Herald and put him in charge of public affairs programming. That led to the creation of a local news program with Lehrer as host that became the forerunner of a national staple, “The News Hour With Jim Lehrer.” “For me and my brothers, there just wasn’t a bigger influence on us,” Owen Wilson, who has starred in movies including “Wedding Crashers,” told the newspaper. His brothers are actors Luke and Andrew Wilson. Owen Wilson plays a father in his new movie “No Escape,” a thriller about a businessman who unwittingly transports his wife and two young daughters into a country where the government is being toppled in a coup. Wilson, 46, said it’s a role he couldn’t have played without first becoming a father himself. He has two sons, ages 4½ and 1½. (ap)

Hugh Jackman brings Broadway to Australia
SYDNEY - Hollywood star Hugh Jackman revealed Monday he will return to the stage in a personal show in Australia inspired by his successful Broadway performances. The Australian, best known for his role of Wolverine in the “X-Men” movies, said “Broadway to Oz” would be an “intimate look at my life, the stuff that I love”. “It’s pretty much all about me,” the Golden Globe, Emmy and Tony Award winner told reporters in Sydney. “You are going to get to know the real me in that show. I will tell you what it’s like being in my shoes.” The show will be based on his 2011 Broadway show, “Hugh Jackman: Back on Broadway” and will map his journey from Australia to Hollywood as well as pay tribute to classic musicals. “I’m a big lover of movie musicals,” Jackman said, naming “Singing in the Rain” as the greatest in that category. The 46-year-old said it had always been his intention to bring the Broadway show to Australia, saying “the end game for me was being here”. Featuring 150 dancers, musicians, singers and a choir, the show will tour Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth in November and December. (afp)
Police probe Mel Gibson’s ‘angry tirade’ at Australian photographer
SYDNEY - Police were investigating claims on Monday that controversial Hollywood star Mel Gibson allegedly shoved and verbally abused an Australian photographer during an angry altercation. Kristi Miller, a news photographer with Sydney’s Daily Telegraph, said she had taken two pictures of Gibson leaving a cinema in the city with Rosalind Ross, 24, on Sunday evening when the actor aggressively confronted her.
“I took two frames and then I ran to get in front of them,” she told the newspaper. “I turned around with my back to them and ran forward and the next thing I knew he had shoved me in the back from behind.” Miller described the actor as “out of control” as he charged after her, spitting in her face and calling her a “dog”. “I was just shocked that I was being pushed, shoved in the back,” she claimed.
New South Wales police said they were investigating the incident but did not specify what, if any, charges were being pursued. “Police were told a man became involved in an altercation with a photographer. He allegedly pushed the photographer,” they said in statement to AFP. “We would urge anyone who might have witnessed the incident and is yet to speak to police to come forward.”
Gibson’s management in the United States denied any physical contact between the star of “Braveheart” and “Lethal Weapon” and the photographer. “There was no physical contact whatsoever with this photographer, who was harassing my client and his friend,” the actor’s representative, Alan Nierob, told the Telegraph in an email. Miller alleged Gibson, 59 continued to lash out at her until he was led away by an apologetic Ross.
“I thought he was going to punch me in the face,” Miller said, adding that Gibson was using offensive language. The Oscar winner, who is in Australia to direct World War II drama “Hacksaw Ridge”, has not been without controversy in recent years. In a high-profile case, he was caught on tape in 2006 making an anti-Semitic rant at a US sheriff’s deputy who had arrested him for drunken driving. (afp)

Many fear that the uncontrolled expansion of tourism in Bali will mean that the next generation will no longer be Balinese. Prof. Sutjaya recently spoke of Bali’s position in the midst of tourism saying: “Bali has been wildly exploited. Unclear
regulations for the protecting of Bali, have caused tourism to be managed with an approach that prioritizes financial interests and allows for collusion. This is a bleak period of Balinese civilization,” he said mournfully. Sutjaya, former professor at Udayana University, said he would like to clear up the public mis-perception that has been implanted and which states that tourism has spurred the growth of Bali’s economy.
