CHICAGO — Popular 1980s band Duran Duran is suing its own fan club. The group known for hits like “Notorious” and “Hungry Like the Wolf” accuses the suburban Chicago-based club of breaching contract by not paying the band promised revenue. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Duran Duran’s lawsuit names Glenview-based Worldwide Fan Clubs, Inc. as the defendant. The suit was filed in Cook County Circuit Court this week. It says the band entered a 2010 contract allowing the club to collect memberships and sell

merchandise. The contract also allegedly stipulates Duran Duran would get 75 percent of the profits. Someone who answered the phone Wednesday at the Glenview office of Worldwide Fan Clubs said the company had no comment.

NEW YORK — Taylor Swift, Coldplay and One Direction are part of the star-studded lineup for this year’s iHeartRadio Music Festival. Clear Channel announced Wednesday that Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, Iggy Azalea and Ed Sheeran will also perform at the festival, to be held Sept. 19-20 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Tickets go on sale Saturday. Other performers include Lorde, Usher, Motley Crue, Zac Brown Band, Paramore, Eric Church and Calvin Harris. The festival, now in its fourth year, will broadcast live across Clear Channel radio stations.

Progressive tax revenue reaches IDR 100 each day Bali Post

DENPASAR - The Head of Bali Revenue Service (Dispenda), Wayan Suarjana, stated that since the implementation of progressive tax, the regional revenue reached about IDR 100 million each day. However, the application of progressive tax was not solely to pursue revenue. However, many positive effects could be obtained, including reducing congestion and air pollution as well as checking vehicle more easily in case of any criminal act.

Suarjana said the progressive taxation could provide added value for increasing regional revenue through vehicle taxes. Besides, this tax could give a sense of justice for people. “When people have more vehicles (cars—Ed), the greater tax will be paid. If they only have one vehicle, it is not subject to progressive taxation. However, the vehicle registration must be appropriate with the identity of the vehicle owner,” said Suarjana, Wednesday (Jul 23). Previously, many people complained about

the application of progressive tax. In addition to the time considered too short, the system in use was often problematic, so that taxpayers were often late and imposed with fine. Although most people considered the progressive tax good, there were still many things needing to be addressed. “The taxation is nice, but the system must be addressed. Congestion on Jalan Eni cancels to fly MH17, survives Gunung Agung unresolved as passport wet in the rain The efforts of Denpasar Transportation Agency to tackle congestion on Jalan Gunung Agung, Denpasar failed. The plan to divert the traffic at the location was strongly opposed by the public. Actually the high flow of vehicles passing through the road section becomes a major obstacle to resolve the congestion at peak hours. Traffic Affairs Division Head of the Denpasar Transportation Agency, I Nyoman Sustiawan, revealed the congestion on Jalan Gunung Agung occurred at peak hours of traffic at 07:00 to 08:30 a.m. and in the afternoon at 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. At the peak hours, the flow of vehicles passing through the road section reached approximately 2,500 units each hour. The peak of traffic happened before and after school hours considering that Jalan Gunung Agung belonged to school area. Denpasar Transportation Agency had conducted a meeting a few months ago to do a traffic diversion at peak hours. But the plan got stuck as could not reach any agreement with surrounding communities. “The public could not accept the traffic diversion plan,” said Sustiawan, Tuesday (Jul 22). Other than traffic diversion, his party had attempted a prohibition from parking at one of the roadsides. However, the short-term measure taken was, according to him, not optimal to overcome the bottlenecks. In addition, the parking space at Gunung Agung Flea Market also had a major contribution to congestion.

The market spreading across an area of 2,000 square meters did not have parking lot so it then used the road body. Such condition made the congestion even worse because the road access was getting narrower. “To be frankly, our obstacles here are the road section belongs to school area and the flea market does not provide parking space,” he added. Separately, Director of PD Pasar Denpasar, I Made Westra, admitted the difficulty to make a parking lot in the flea market. He said the market area had been fully occupied by around 125 traders. He denied if the on-street parking of vehicles was the cause of congestion on Jalan Gunung Agung. During school holidays for two weeks, no congestion occurred even though the parking of flea market was still using the road body. “We’ve deployed some officers to monitor in the field. In fact, during school holidays, there was no congestion. From the results of monitoring, the congestion occurred because the traffic density,” he explained. In addition, the efforts to revitalize and relocate the flea market could not be done so far as hampered by location and budget matters. Based on the data owned by the Denpasar Transportation Agency, the increasing number of vehicles ranged from 7 percent to 12 percent each year. In 2013, there were 1,377,836 units of motorcycles, 220,052 units of passenger vehicle and 56,425 units of freight vehicle. (dwa)

SINGARAJA - Deadly accident can happen to anyone and any time, such as the shooting down of MH17 plane belonged to the Malaysia Airlines as a result of missile shot by the rebels at the border of Ukraine. Luh Eni Kerti Asih, 27, was very lucky as she did not fly MH17 because her passport was wet in the rain. Eni is a friend of Ketut Wiartini—affectionately known as Wiwik—denoting one of the victims of the MH17 crash plane occurred on Thursday (Jul 17). She planned to go home and fly with the same airline as Ketut Wiartini. Indeed, Eni had not purchased ticket yet on the same day. But, Wiwik in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and Eni in Belgium had promised to go home together with the same plane as per contact via Facebook message. When wishing to book a ticket, it was rainy in Belgium and her passport was wet as exposed to rainwater. Eni then called the Malaysia Airlines, but she got information if the ticket had sold out. “My passport was wet as exposed to rain at that time. Then, when I booked a ticket, I was told if the ticket has sold out. If my passport was not wet, probably I’ll go home with Wiwik,” she said, Tuesday night (Jul 22). During in Belgium, Eni said she was on holiday. As per communication on Facebook with Wiwik, they were going to meet in Bali in case they could fly with the same flight.

“I know her a year ago when participating in subdistrict hiking activity on August 17,” said Eni, an alumnus of the Department of Biology at Ganesha University of Education, Singaraja. Wiwik had sent a message of prayers to Eni when they canceled to go home together at that time. “If later on we could not fly together, let’s meet in Bali, but Wiwik will send the angels and ask the Lord Jesus to protect Eni,” said Eni quoting the Facebook message from Wiwik. At that time, Eni always remembered the message of her mother in order to always pray prior to doing any activity. Her departure to Belgium was in private holiday and to fill the time with colleagues who were active in the field of environmental research. She knew the flight carrying Wiwik from social media. “I got a post on the plane crash from social media when I was in Belgium. I was very sad and could not say anything,” said the teacher of Bali Mandara high school. The memory came to the mind of Eni when arriving at Ngurah Rai Airport was a blue kebaya which would be given to Wiwik after arriving in Bali. “I traveled from Belgium to Bali alone. Indeed, a fear haunted me, but I kept on praying. On hearing the sad news regarding the plane boarded by Wiwik crashed, it’s only this blue kebaya I kept. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

The hourglass-shaped “Bonbon” or “Sweetie” dress -- one of more than 100 haute couture outfits that have just gone on display at a new exhibition in Paris -- fitted the bill perfectly. Dubbed the “New Look” by Harper’s Bazaar magazine, this return to feminine curves was an immediate hit although the amount of fabric Dior’s new designs required caused outrage. During the war years, dresses were typically made from just three yards (metres) of material. By contrast, one of Dior’s new evening dresses required no less than 25 yards of taffeta. Police seize ten counterfeit paintings

DENPASAR - The Boeing 777 tasked with shepherding its passengers from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, held the promise of beginnings and endings for many on board: the thrill of a new adventure or dream vacation for some, and the comfort of going back home for others. It was love and a fresh start that had lured Willem Grootscholten aboard. The burly, 53-year-old divorced former soldier from the Netherlands — a gentle giant of a man — had sold his house and was moving to Bali to build a new life with his darling Christine, a guesthouse owner. He’d met her by chance on a trip to the Indonesian island last year. Christine, who like many Indonesians has only one name, had heard through a friend that some guy had fallen off a cliff and hurt his back. She told her friend to take him to a traditional healer she knew. The next day, Grootscholten called Christine to thank her. They connected over coffee. Grootscholten had to return to the Netherlands, where he was working as a bouncer at a pot-selling cafe. But the two stayed in touch online, and their relationship blossomed. On New Year’s Eve, he surprised her by showing up at her doorstep. He stayed three weeks. The father of Christine’s two children, 14-year-old Dustin and 8-year-old Stephanie, had died six years ago, and they quickly bonded with Grootscholten, calling him “Daddy.” The four stayed in touch online. Almost every day, they shared meals via Skype by placing their iPads on their tables during dinner for Christine’s family and lunch for Grootscholten. The complainant claimed to have been deceived because before purchasing the paintings, the defendant declared if those paintings were original works of Arie Smith, a Dutch painter who had long lived in Ubud. Additionally, the defendant also claimed if those paintings were obtained for free from Arie Smith. The paintings were given for services of the defendant claiming to be a former protégé of the painter who is famous for his young artist style.

After the transaction accomplished, the complainant was surprised after checking and knowing if the paintings were counterfeit. “The complainant claimed to have come to the studio of Arie Smith while presenting a photograph of the paintings purchased from the defendant. In fact, Aris Smith stated if the paintings are counterfeit,” he said. To follow up on the painting forgery report, his party chose to be careful. Other than asking for information to witnesses, the investigators would also involve a number of people who were competent in the field of painting. DENPASAR - When shopping to food stalls and bring home the food, the traders infrequently wrap the food in a white container such as styrofoam. This packaging is quite practical because it is light and looks classy. However, within certain limits it can be bad for health where the chemical substance used as the basic material of styrofoam will unwittingly switch to food.

The Head of National Agency of Food and Drug Control (BBPOM) of Bali, Endang Widowati, when met on Wednesday (Jul 24) said that styrofoam was actually a trademark of product made from styrene granules processed using benzene. The benzene itself belonged to substance that could cause various diseases. When consumed, the benzene itself would be absorbed by blood cells and over time would damage the function of the spinal marrow. Another effect of benzene was the reduction of immune system resulting in lower resistance to diseases. “Some of the diseases that can arise are the problem in the thyroid gland and disruption in nervous system which can cause fatigue, accelerated heartbeat, trembling, restlessness and sleeping difficulty,” said Endang. Admitted Endang, no country in the world prohibited the use of the styrofoam on the basis of health consideration although having been processed. “The standards of WHO for styrene monomer as the basic material of styrofoam is not considered to harm the health if the residue does not exceed 5,000 ppm,” said Endang. On that account, though it was not prohibited, the BPOM always checked the feasibility of styrofoam circulating in the community. Recently, according to Endang, her party made a test on 17 types of food packaging using styrofoam.

TABANAN - The driver of ARtrans bus serving the route Solo, Yogyakarta, Bandung and Jakarta was arrested by Tabanan Police Narcotics Unit in a urine test against public transport drivers in relation to the Eid Security Operation 2014 in the rest area of Soka Indah, Antap village, Selemadeg, Wednesday (Jul 23). The driver of ARtrans bus with license plate B 7999 VGA on behalf of Gandu Hariono, 54, a resident of Malang, was caught carrying a brown roll wrapped in plastic admitted to be crystal meth stored in front right small pouch of his pants. The arrest started from the suspicion of the officers that saw the driver’s gestures during the urine test. Even, when asked to write down his name by the officer, the offender could not write with a reason not to bring his glasses. Ultimately, the offender was told to pee in the toilet. Taiwan airline suspects bad weather caused crash

TAIPEI, Taiwan — An airline said Thursday it suspected typhoon weather caused one of its planes to crash land on a small Taiwanese island, killing 48 people. The ATR-72 operated by Taiwan’s TransAsia Airways was carrying 58 passengers and crew when it crashed into houses on the Penghu island chain in the Taiwan Strait between Taiwan and China late Wednesday, authorities said. The plane was on a flight from the city of Kaohsiung in southern Taiwan. Two people killed on the plane were French citizens and the rest Taiwanese, an airline representative, Phoebe Lu, told The Associated Press on Thursday. The airline identified the French passengers as Jeromine Deramond and Penelope Luternauer. The airline said one of the injured 10 survivors had gone home, and that five local residents had been hurt on the ground but they were also treated and released. The twin-engine turboprop crashed while making a second landing attempt, Taiwan transportation Minister Yeh Kuang-shih told reporters. Penghu, a scenic chain of 64 islets, is a popular tourist site about 150 kilometers (90 miles) southwest of the Taiwanese capital, Taipei. The crash of Flight GE222 was Taiwan’s first fatal air accident in 12 years and came after Typhoon Matmo passed across the island, causing heavy rains that continued

into Wednesday night. About 200 airline flights had been canceled earlier in the day due to rain and strong winds. The government’s Central News Agency cited Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau as saying there were thunderstorms in the area at the time of the crash. Lu said TransAsia suspected typhoon weather caused the crash, but was waiting for aviation authorities to finish an investigation to say for sure. The plane showed no defects and had ample visibility to land safely, Civil Aeronautics Administration spokesman Lee Wan-lee said. The airline said family members had taken a charter flight on Thursday morning to Magong airport, near where the crash happened. They would then be taken to a morgue to identify victims. “All the bodies have been dug out,” said Chen Tung-yi, a section chief with the Penghu disaster response center. “We’re cleaning up the site now and also doing appraisals of the situation and trying to identify victims.” The plane crashed into eight houses, including some built from coral harvested off the coast, Chen said.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Argentina’s embattled Vice President was back in court Wednesday, this time over false data in documents for an old car that he bought about 20 years ago. Amado Boudou appeared before a federal judge and presented a written statement instead of speaking in his defense. Boudou is accused of transferring a Honda CRX automobile to his name irregularly in 2003. The judge is expected to decide in 10 days whether to charge Boudou or dismiss the case for lack of evidence. In a separate case, the vice president was charged last month with bribery and conducting business incompatible with public office. He is accused of using shell companies and secret middlemen

to gain control of a company that was given contracts to print Argentine currency as well as material for President Cristina Fernandez’s election campaign. Boudou is the first sitting Argentine vice president to face such charges. If convicted, he could be sentenced to between one and six years in prison and be banned for life from elective office. The charges against the vice president come as Fernandez is struggling to curb double-digit inflation and court rulings in the United States that threaten to force Argentina into default on its debts. Fernandez has remained loyal to Boudou even as the allegations have made him Argentina’s least popular politician. His falling fortunes have left the government without a clear presidential successor ahead of next year’s elections. Fernandez has yet to speak publicly about the cases.

NEW DELHI - The World Bank on Wednesday offered India up to $18 billion in financial support over the next three years while lavishly praising new right-wing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “ambitious vision” for the country. Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party was elected in May with the biggest electoral majority in three decades on pledges to revive India’s sluggish economy, ousting the scandal-tainted, left-leaning Congress party. Speaking at the end of a three-day visit to India, World Bank president Jim Yong Kim told reporters he was hugely impressed with Modi’s “comprehensive and extremely ambitious vision for the country”. “I am more optimistic leaving (about India’s prospects) than when I arrived,” Kim said following talks with Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to discuss the new government’s development priorities. Modi, 63, “has an extreme sense of urgency”, Kim said, as he outlined an offer to India of “financial support worth $15 billion to $18 billion over the next three years” to help lift hundreds of millions of Indians out of poverty. India is already the Bank’s largest cumulative borrower. “His (Modi’s) intention is to grow this economy quickly, grow the number of jobs quickly and demonstrate to the Indian people you can do things at scale with great speed,” Kim said. Uniquely, it could be played by children in the nuance of past Bali. Artistic expression became a subtle part of Balinese daily life. Accompanied with a simple musical instrument made from bamboo, the kid artists were able to integrate the art with the world of its own. They played and sang as if they hinted an inner awareness that the journey of human life from birth had been armed with a contradictory character. There were goodness and badness, delicateness and wildness. These intricacies of human behavior with different characters were featured in a religious and aesthetic art in the arja operetta collaboration. Commenced with a meow-meow game, the resumed the performance by going up to the stage and watched the arja operetta. After saying prayers, the children chanted wargasari psalmody in line with the ritual procession.

Afterward, it was resumed with the performance of panglembar by presenting Hard Mask and Old Mask Dance symbolizing the journey of human life which was born, grew and developed intelligence and became the paragon in old age. This art presentation was accompanied by Manik Swari Dance Studio Batuyang directed by Made Gde Mandra. The next scene was the life journey of romance, where Galuh and Liku equally fell in love with Raden Mantri Manis, a crown prince of a kingdom. Here, Galuh showed off the expertise in religiosity in the form of psalmody of dharma and literary appreciation. Meanwhile, the Liku featured contemporary dance movement showing off the passion of the young and modernity. Before staging, the activity was commenced with a workshop presenting speakers from the circle of practitioners and artists such as I Nyoman Cerita, I Nyoman Arjana Adiputra and education practitioner I Gde Rudia Adiputra. NEW YORK — It isn’t a household name, but the company at the center of a food scandal in China helps make some of the world’s most popular foods, including the Big Macs and Quarter Pounders served at McDonald’s locations. OSI Group, a privately held company based in Aurora, Illinois, was thrust into the spotlight this weekend when a Chinese TV station reported that one of its Shanghai plants repackaged old beef and chicken and slapped new expiration dates on them. The scare has ensnared chains including McDonald’s, KFC, Burger King and Starbucks, all of which got ingredients from a unit of OSI in the region called Husi Food Co. The controversy deepened Wednesday when five workers for Husi, were detained by police. An official with China’s food safety regulator told the Xinhua News Agency that some of the illegal conduct it uncovered was an arrangement “organized” by Husi. None of OSI’s more than 50 other plants around the world have been implicated and CEO Sheldon

Lavin noted in a statement that authorities in China have inspected and found no issues at its other facilities. He called what happened at the Shanghai location “completely unacceptable.” The scandal is a blemish for OSI, which began as a family-run meat market in 1909 and prides itself on its high standards. The company notes on its website that it has a “strong heritage of quality and service” and that food safety and quality assurance are “guiding principles.” Its business took off after Ray Kroc tapped it in the 1950s to be a beef supplier for McDonald’s Corp. OSI grew alongside McDonald’s as the hamburger chain expanded around the world, and even helped create the McRib. OSI doesn’t have to report financial information, but according to PrivCo, which researches privately held companies, it had $6.13 billion in sales last year. OSI doesn’t publicly disclose all of its clients either, but it supplies numerous big-name chains including Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc., for which it cooks some beans and carnitas and barbacoa meats. In the U.S., OSI has said it has

systems in place to ensure products can be located and taken out of the system within two hours if any issues arise. NEGARA - Amerthasari Temple located about 1.5 km south of Negara town is one of the Dang Khayangan temples in Jembrana. From time immemorial to the present, the temple situating amid the customary settlement of Lokasari, or precisely Mertasari hamlet, Loloan Timur, Negara, is venerated by the subak members. It is reflected at the beginning of each planting season. To keep away their plants from diseases, residents are always saying prayers and starting their activities from the temple. It is a universal temple because it is used to venerate a great religious teacher, Danghyang Nirartha and closely associated with his pilgrimage to the Island of Bali. Building of this temple has been renovated in 1961 but in 1965 the temple building was abandoned and the renovation was totally discontinued. Ultimately, on July 14, 1976, the entire building collapsed as hit by earthquake. The current temple priest, denoting the third generation, mentioned the meaning of Amerthasari was that Amertha meant

the whole foods, while Sari meant the essence. Mangku Nendra is the successor of the previous temple priest, namely Nengah Netra who was also his deceased father. Meanwhile, the first was still unclear because the temple was still not restored at that time. At the moment, the Dang Khayangan Amerthasari Temple has some shrines, namely the Ratu Nyoman, Padmasana, Meru, Pepelik, Taksu and Dewa Ayu Manik Galih dedicated to venerate the Goddess Sri. Genesis of the temple has something to do with Danghyang Nirartha. When arriving in Bali, Pedanda Sakti taught religion at Gede Perancak Temple where currently the Dang Khayangan Perancak Temple has been moved to Tanjung Tangis. At that time, he asked the monkeys where there was another village. The monkey responded by facing north and there laid a village called Budeng. There lived black monkey or Ijah. As soon as arriving at the village, he asked again where there was a village, and the monkeys were facing the west, now becoming the location of the Merthasari Temple. When arriving at the village, he taught the people about agriculture, farming and trade. The Telaga Taman was a very fertile area. Religious life was quite good. In this area, there were

five sanctums. In the long run, it turned into Amerthasari village and is now called Mertasari. Now, the temple whose anniversary falls on Anggara Kasih (Tuesday) Perangbakat is venerated by four customary villages namely the Lokasari (Mertasari), Dauh Waru, Pendem and Batu Agung. Mangku added that other than the temple, there was also the Taman Temple that formerly was a pond. “In days of yore, there was a temple located beneath the banyan tree,” explained Nendra. Aside from the six shrines existing today, the temple sitting on the area of 1800 square meters also has a Peselang pavilion to place gamelan instrument, Piasan, storing chamber and the easternmost is pavilion of Banten Piodalan (oblation). In the past, most of the supporting devotees were farmers, but now they are from four customary villages and even from beyond Bali. As the existing plan, this temple area will be expanded to the current parking lot. After the land acquisition, it will become about 3,000 square meters. Renovation and expansion of the temple area will include the temple building, construction of base fence, parking lot expansion, the arrangement of temple landscaping, as well as the wantilan hall. ALGIERS, Algeria — An Air Algerie flight from Burkina Faso to Algiers disappeared from radar early Thursday, the official Algerian news agency said. Air navigation services lost track of the plane after 0155 GMT, or 50 minutes after takeoff, the agency said. That means that Flight AH5017 had been missing for hours before the news was made public. “In keeping with procedures, Air Algerie has launched its emergency plan,” the agency quoted the airline as saying. The flight path of the plane from Ouagadougou, the capital of the west African nation of Burkina Faso, to Algiers was not immediately clear. Ougadougou is in a nearly straight line south of Algiers, passing over Mali where unrest continues in the north. However, a senior French official said it was unlikely that fighters in Mali had weaponry that could shoot down a plane. FAA lifts ban on US flights to Tel Aviv airport Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON — The Federal Aviation Administration has lifted its ban on U.S. flights in and out of Israel, which the agency had imposed out of concern for the risk of planes being hit by Hamas rockets. The decision was effective at 11:45 p.m. EDT Wednesday. “Before making this decision, the FAA worked with its U.S. government counterparts to assess the security situation in Israel and carefully reviewed both significant new information and measures the government of Israel is taking to mitigate potential risks to civil aviation,” the FAA said. “The agency will continue to closely monitor the very fluid situation around Ben Gurion Airport and will take additional actions as necessary.” The FAA instituted a 24-hour prohibition Tuesday in response to a rocket strike that landed about a mile from Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv. The directive, which was extended Wednesday, applied only to U.S. carriers. The FAA has no authority over foreign airlines operating in Israel, although the European Aviation Safety Agency late Tuesday said it “strongly recommends” that airlines refrain from operating flights to and from Tel Aviv. Some European carriers, including Air France and Lufthansa, extended flight cancelations through Thursday.

The FAA’s flight ban was criticized by the Israeli government and by Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, who questioned whether President Barack Obama used a federal agency to impose an economic boycott on Israel. Delta Air Lines, which diverted a jumbo jet away from Tel Aviv before Tuesday’s ban by the FAA, will not necessarily resume flights to Israel even if U.S. authorities declare the area safe, the airline’s CEO said before the FAA lifted the ban. BANGKOK — Thailand’s railway authority said on Thursday it will re-launch women- and children-only carriages in main routes nationwide after a 13-year-old girl was raped and killed in her berth on an overnight train earlier this month. The State Railway of Thailand said in a statement that the special carriages will start operating on trains traveling to the north, the northeast and the south on Aug. 1. Female passengers and boys younger than 10 and shorter than 150 centimeters (4 feet 11 inches) can ride in the carriages, which will be run by female employees. The move followed public furor over the assault allegedly carried out by the train’s staff in early July. One employee was arrested in the rape and murder and a second was arrested as an accomplice. The national railway governor also was sacked by sThailand’s military government. The railway authority said the new carriage service will ensure the safety and convenience of female and children passengers. Since the girl’s death, alcohol testing has begun on railway employees, and public health agencies have called for alcohol to be banned on trains altogether. The women-only carriages had been canceled previously due to profit losses.

A peaceful transfer of power in Indonesia, the country with the world’s largest Muslim population, would go against a worrying trend in the region of flawed elections and military meddling. Over the past year, there have been disputed elections in Malaysia and Cambodia, where this week the opposition agreed to end a parliamentary boycott. Thailand, once an example of democratic progress, is facing its most repressive period of military rule in decades. Authoritarian governments prevail in Laos and Vietnam, and reforms seem to be stalling in former pariah state Myanmar. Political change has been comparatively smooth in Indonesia, the largest country in Southeast Asia, over the past decade and a half. Widodo’s emergence appears to reflect how far the country has come since popular protests ended the 30-year rule of former dictator Suharto in 1998. Widodo, the 53-year-old Jakarta governor, was the first candidate in a direct presidential election without ties to Suharto. He won by 8 million votes, or 6 percent, over Prabowo Subianto, a former general and son-in-law of the late dictator. Dovizioso extends Ducati MotoGP deal

Andrea Dovizioso has extended his Ducati MotoGP deal for two more seasons, while team-mate Cal Crutchlow insists he will honour the second year of his contract. Both riders had been linked to seats with the returning Suzuki factory squad for 2015. But during the ‘World Ducati Week’ event at Misano on Saturday, Dovizioso announced a contract extension, and Crutchlow denied suggestions that he was seeking an early release from his current two-year deal. Dovizioso joined Ducati to replace Yamaha returnee Valentino Rossi at the start of 2013. Although the Italian team has still not won a race since Casey Stoner’s 2010 Australian Grand Prix victory, Dovizioso said he was encouraged that the changes being instigated by new project chief Gigi Dall’Igna would pay off in time.

“We’ve reached an agreement and this is because it’s an interesting project which is beginning to bear fruit with the arrival of Dall’Igna,” said Dovizioso. “We’ve had two podiums already this season and we are fourth in the world championship. “The current situation is really exciting, especially with the plans for 2015 in mind.” Crutchlow has struggled since joining Ducati from Tech 3 Yamaha this season and is currently only 14th in the championship, but during the press conference at Misano he insisted there were no doubts about him continuing with the team. PLA D’ADET, France — On the last of four Pyrenees ascents, Rafal Majka winked at a French TV camera and tugged playfully at a motorcycle’s antenna. Even this late in the Tour de France, the Polish rider made winning look easy as he took Stage 17 on Wednesday. For Vincenzo Nibali, the second ride in the mountains on France’s border with Spain was more serious. “The Shark” nibbled yet more seconds away from several of his closest challengers, and the yellow jersey that he has worn for all but two days of the race seemed to fit just a little more tightly ahead of the finish Sunday in Paris. Nibali was even businesslike with his own prime minister, imploring him not to get too ahead of himself in celebration. “It’s true that I received a text message from Matteo Renzi, who invited me to Chigi Palace to celebrate my victory,” the cautious Sicilian said about the premier’s official residence. “I replied that only after winning — if I do so — I’ll be able to say that I’ll be present.” The 124.5-kilometer (77-mile) trek Wednesday was the shortest stage in this year’s Tour. He also rejected any calls for a boycott. “A boycott in sport only rarely yields results and therefore I don’t think much of such suggestions,” Zwanziger told Handelsblatt, adding that Fuchs’ comments sounded populistic. “Sport must go places even if it is painful. Only then can it stand up for its values and convictions such as tolerance, fairness and peaceful cooperation,” said Zwanziger. Several Western nations, including the United States, boycotted the Moscow Olympic Games in 1980, in protest against the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan.

There were limited chances until Borriello volleyed in a corner from in front of goal. “Both teams played with young players,” Roma coach Rudi Garcia said via a translator. “I am quite happy with the development we had.” For the second time in three years, Fenway, the home of the Boston Red Sox, was transformed into the home of Liverpool, which is owned by Fenway Sports Group. John Henry, owner of the Red Sox, also is the controlling partner of Fenway Sports Group. Roma beat Liverpool 2-1 at Fenway two years ago. “It’s the second time in the last couple of years,” Liverpool coach Brendan Rodgers said. “It was a great atmosphere. The support was great. I think it was for both — fantastic. For a preseason game, it was a very, very good game.” Roma is by NBA team, the Boston Celtics, minority owner Jim Pallotta.
