Book by ‘Game of Thrones’ author to be animated film

NEW YORK - Warner Bros is set to produce an animated film based on an early book by the author of the “Game of Thrones” saga, a source familiar with the matter told AFP Wednesday. The report, which first appeared on the specialty website Deadline, says that author George R.R. Martin will produce the film based on “The Ice Dragon,” published in 1980. The book, written for young people, appeared well ahead of Martin’s “Game of Thrones” series and does not take place in the land of the Seven Kingdoms, the setting of the “Thrones” medieval fantasy series.George R.R. Martin fans are eagerly awaiting the sixth “Game of Thrones” series, titled “The Winds of Winter,” which has been promised since 2012.

Bantar Gebang at full capacity in 10 years: Sanitation agency

The Bantar Gebang garbage dump in Bekasi, West Java, will be at full capacity within 10 years as a result of a lack of waste treatment facilities, an official has said. Currently, 7,000 tons of waste from Jakarta are dumped at Bantar Gebang every day.

ing the landfill and to prevent the escape of landfill gas. The produced methane gas could be effectively used to convert the waste into energy, Asep said. MADRID - A Spanish rapper whose three-and-a-half-year sentence for “glorifying terrorism” and insulting the crown caused an outcry said Wednesday he would defy authorities just a day before he was due in prison, amid reports he may have fled the country. Jose Miguel Arenas Beltran -- better known as Valtonyc -- was sentenced last year for lyrics that Spain’s National Court felt warranted prison, and the Supreme Court upheld this in February. Lyrics included: “Let them be as frightened as a police

Division Head of Customer Relations of the PDAM Tabanan, I.B. Marjaya Wirata, said on Wednesday (May 23) that PDAM Tabanan currently serves 56,200 household connections. These connections are served by 32 water sources consisting of springs and surface water to produce about 500 liters per second. “Normally, our discharge is 500 liters per second. But during the dry season, this discharge can reduce to five to ten percent,” he said. This reduced water discharge, he said, varies in one service area, depending on the water source and the height of the area. The most extreme reduction occurs at Belimbing village where to serve this area the water source comes from Mekori springs. “During dry season, the flow of water produced by Mekori springs

decreases by 50 percent,” said Wirata. However, the drastic reduction in water discharge during dry season only occurs in the service area of Belimbing village while in other areas are not so significant and can be served normally. Although there are no rotating schedules for water use during dry season, Wirata admitted that during rush hours some points will experience a little water or not be flowing at all. This does not happen because the water is off but at certain hours all the connections served by the PDAM are open or used so that the use at that time is quite high. The busy hours in the morning last from 06:00 until 08:00 while in the afternoon from 18:00 until 20:00. “At these hours, all the connections totally amounting to 56,200 are open. Therefore, people are expected to collect water during the running hours,” explained Wirata. Water usage is also predicted to increase ahead of Galungan holiday celebration. So, the public is advised to monitor whether there is a leakage of pipeline connection and immediately report to the PDAM for immediate repair. (kmb24)

BANGLI - The wooden jetty built by the government in front of the village cemetery of Terunyan, Kintamani, is now no longer usable due to be severely damaged. Although it has happened few years ago, until now there has been no repair made by the government. In order to be able to board and drop off tourists, Terunyan villagers are forced to build an emergency jetty made from bamboo independently. Terunyan Rowing Boat Group Leader, Wayan Warjaya, when contacted on Wednesday (May 23) said the construction of the emergency jetty by residents denoting the members of three tourism organizations at Terunyan village namely the rowing boat group, boat owners and tour guides last Thursday. The emergency jetty measuring 4x14 meters was built floating by using bamboo and barrel. Construction of the emergency jetty costs up to IDR 26 million. Warjaya explained that construction of the emergency jetty was done by residents because the current wooden jetty is badly damaged. So, it can no longer be used by passengers to board and alight. The increase occurred in the price of young coconut leaf and flowers for offerings. In Gianyar Market on Thursday (May 23), a bunch of young coconut leaf cost IDR 17,000 or increased as much as IDR 2,000 from previously. Marigold increased from IDR 7,000 to IDR 12,000 and garden balsam increased from IDR 17,000 to IDR 20,000. The price increase also happened to hydrangea from IDR 8,000 to IDR 10,000 per kg and bougainvillea from IDR 15,000 to IDR 20,000. According to one of the flower merchants, the price hike of ritual paraphernalia is a regular phenomenon ahead of the Galungan holiday. Price hike can even occur several times due to high demand.

A coconut merchant at Gianyar Market, Ketut Darmini, said that although the supply of young coconut leaf is abundant, the price is still rising. This happened due to the booming demand. According to her, the price will continue to rise until the day before Galungan. Meanwhile, the Head of the Gianyar Industry and Trade Agency, I Wayan Suamba, stated that the price hike of ritual paraphernalia remains in the fairness limit. The increase is not significant and still affordable to the community. In order to anticipate the price hike of the ritual paraphernalia and basic needs ahead of Galungan and Kuningan, Gianyar district government has implemented several programs. One of them is by organizing cheap market in public market in every subdistrict. The cheap market has been going on since the beginning of this month. Therefore, his division will add ATCS in 2018. “So, there are deficiencies for 21 intersections having not owned the ATCS yet. We are going to establish at ten points,” said Tofan Priyanto, on Wednesday (May 5). According to him, the ATCS development has entered the third phase with the budget of reaching IDR 9.3 billion more. The project is under tender stage through the Electronic Procurement Service (PLSE). In accordance with the plan, the ATCS will be built at ten points. “The development at the ten points is the new one,” he said. He explained the placement will include the intersection of Beraban in Kuta, Nakula in Kuta, Camplung Tanduk in Kuta, Batu Bolong in North Kuta, Kwanji in North Kuta, Bangsal in North Kuta, LPD Dalung in North Kuta, Pererenan in Mengwi, Seseh in Mengwi and Abianbase in Mengwi. “Likewise, there are additions of facilities to a number of points because the infrastructure has already been installed. Najib’s coalition suffered a defeat at the May 9 poll which ended their six-decade hold on power, beaten by a reformist alliance led by Mahathir Mohamad. Mahathir, who first served as premier from 1981-2003 and came out of retirement aged 92 to take on Najib, campaigned on claims that the former leader and his cronies looted sovereign wealth fund 1MDB. Billions of dollars were allegedly stolen from the fund in a sophisticated fraud, and used to buy everything from artworks to high-end real estate. Since Najib’s ouster, police have seized cash reportedly amounting to at least $25 million, plus jewels and handbags in raids on properties linked to him and his unpopular wife. Najib pushed through a huge media scrum at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters in the administrative capital of Putrajaya as he arrived to be quizzed about 1MDB money allegedly ending up in his personal bank accounts. He smiled and waved at journalists as he went into the building. He had already been questioned at the agency for over four hours on Tuesday. Najib is being probed by the anti-corruption body over SRC International, an energy company that was originally a subsidiary of 1MDB. (afp)

Death toll from south India protests rises to 13

TUTICORIN - A protester shot during demonstrations against a copper plant in southern India died of his injuries Thursday, officials said, the 13th victim killed by police fire. A curfew remained in pockets of Tuticorin city in Tamil Nadu state where police used live ammunition to disperse protesters this week, provoking international outrage and demands for an immediate investigation. Calls for the copper smelting plant owned by British mining giant Vedanta Resources to be closed had been building in recent months, with residents complaining it was polluting their city. The resistance came to a head Tuesday when police stopped a crowd of thousands from protesting outside the factory. Cars and buildings were set ablaze and rocks hurled at police, who responded with live fire.

Eleven demonstrators were shot dead and many people injured in the melee, including 20 police. Another protester died Wednesday when he was struck by rubber bullets in a second day of protests. The latest victim died in hospital Thursday, two days after being injured, doctors said. “He was brought in a critical condition with bullet injuries and died today,” a doctor at the local hospital told AFP. The chief minister of Tamil Nadu has ordered an inquiry but defended the actions of police, which the state’s opposition leader called “mass murder”. “The police have a duty during protests to maintain law and order, but lethal force can only be used if there is an imminent threat to life,” Meenakshi Ganguly, South Asia director at Human Rights Watch, said.

“Tamil Nadu authorities need to carry out a prompt and credible investigation to determine if police used excessive force.” Internet services have been blocked across the city for five days. Police justified the blackout to stop the spread of information that could incite further violence as they search for those behind Tuesday’s arson attacks. Environmentalists and locals say the factory contaminates water and air, claims its owners deny. The company has sought to renew the licence of the temporarily non-operational plant and hopes to double its production capacity. But a state court Wednesday ordered that it cease any further construction at the new site. The ruling came just hours after Tamil Nadu’s pollution board ordered the existing plant be shut and its power supply cut until a verdict is made on its licensing application. (afp)

BUSINESS EU says US car import threat ‘difficult to understand’

A top EU official on Thursday expressed deep surprise at the fresh threat by the Donald Trump administration to hit European auto imports with tariffs as transatlantic trade tensions worsened.

In an email to AFP, a commission spokesman said: “Invoking national security would be even more farfetched in the case of the car industry.” The response came after the US launched an investigation into the auto sector -- which would provide the legal basis to impose punishing tariffs on imports if a threat to US national security was found. The shock move against the likes of Volkswagen or Mercedes came as a June 1 deadline approaches for the US to decide whether the EU wins an exemption from duties on steel and aluminium that are also based on alleged national security dangers. Babakan hamlet in Sukawati, Gianyar, is known for having many puppeteers and this hamlet located adjacent to the Sukawati Art Market is also famous as being home to many art maestros. Wayan Wija is one puppeteer whose name is familiar to art lovers from his distinct telling fhte storu of Tantri. Wayan Nartha and Nyoman Granyam are two other well known pupeterrs from Bebakan hamlet. Granyam became famous after President Soekarna invited him to stage a puppet show at the Ubud Palace in 1962. There are many other puppeteers from this hamlet who are well known in the area and in many other parts of Bali and beyond. I Ketut Sudiana, who is a descendant of a Nyoman Nartha, explained that Babakan is famous as a puppet art village. From time immemorial puppeteers have thrived here. Currently there are approximately 20 third generation puppeteers in Babakan hamlet who perform various types of puppet shows. “Babakan Sukawati became a center of art during the kingdom era”, he said. The people of Babakan have remained highly creative developing all manner of traditional puppets with Wayan Madra being a famous example. Many foreign scholars come to Babakan to research Balinese puppets, explained this lecturer from the Faculty of Performing Arts, ISI Denpasar. Babakan village is also famous for silver handicrafts, drawing many buyers. The late Wayan Sobrat was a famous bade tower (used to haul body in cremation ceremony) and lion artist and his skills have been passed down to his children who still make these beautiful sculptures. Most interestingly, the Babakan community is still diligent in preserving their palm-

leaf manuscripts as a source of inspiration for their performing arts. The legacy of the palm-leaf manuscript is also varied. “The manuscripts are a very useful reference for puppeteers for the story material in puppet performances. Sometimes specific stories are requested so they must be prepared carefully”, said Sudiana. Today, there are many young creative puppeteer, explained this winner of the Bali Little Puppeteer 1983, because the arte environment of the hamlet is conducive to creativity. He hiself became a puppeteer because he

was encouraged by his family, like when he had to perform in the Bali Little Puppeteer Festival to represent Gianyar district. In the competition held by Cultural Development and Advisory Council (Listibya), this Gianyar-born man on March 29, 1970 won first place. From then on, he became a famous child puppeteer who received many requests to perform. At Sukawati village, there are many puppeteers with different specific skills. Puppeteers must pay attention to rhetoric, the dialogue of the puppets when arguing

and dancing technique of the puppets is also very important. There are many young puppeteers today even outside of Sukawati who are enticed by the many arts including in this one art form. In addition to actively performing and making puppets, Sudiana also teaches in the Puppetry Department of the Faculty of Performing Arts at the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar. “In the past, most puppet craftsmen were also a puppeteers. Hundreds of villagers from Daup Customary Villagers, Kintamani, thronged the outermost court-

yard of the Bale Agung Temple on Wednesday afternoon (Jun. 28) at around 14:00 to eat together. This

shared meal is part of the traditional ngaturang lakon procession that was carried out by ten former leaders of Daup customary village. Jero Penyarikan Payu accompanied by headman of Daup, Dewa Nyoman Saliawan, when met last Wednesday explained that ngaturang lakon is a tradition that must be executed by former customary leaders of Daup customary village in the position of Jero Kubayan, Jero Bau, Jero Singgukan, Jero Nyarikan and Jero Mangku (temple priest). On Wednesday there were a total of ten residents who took part in the ngaturang lako, seven of whom had served as Jero Kubayan, two as Jero Bau and one as Jero Mangku. “This ngaturang lakon signifies a kind of returning of the of-

ferings that were accepted when they were serving as leaders” explained Saliawan. According to the customs of the ngaturang lakon, residents who once served as kubayan (the highest position in the ulu apad system), are obliged to offer certain oblations including two pigs. Those who served as Jero Bau and temple priests (Jero Mangku) only offer a pig. “This year a total of 17 pigs are being offered”, he said. Jero Penyarikan Payu explained that the ngaturang laku begins with the negtegang procession, followed by nanceb taring and ngingsah. The procession was commenced three days ago and on Wednesday, the mapiuning (notifying) procession took place at the Puseh Temple in the morning when the pigs were

brought to the temple. Later in the afternoon, after performing the mapiuning, the participants went back to the Bale Agung to slaughter the pigs and prepared for various purposes. “Some of the pork is processed for offerings, some divided up for malang (divided equally amongst all the heads of family) and the remaining is made dishes like lawar, sate to be eaten together” Payu explained. Jero Penyarikan Payu went on to explained that the ngaturang lakon tradition is not actually a necessity, however, if it is not implemented the former leaders are considered to have a spiritual debt. “Usually people give up their position as customary leaders (pedulan) once all their children have gotten married” he added. Poisoned ex-spy’s daughter says wants to return to Russia ‘in future’

“I was discharged from hospital on April 9th but my treatment is continuing,” Yulia Skripal said in a video statement to Reuters which was broadcast on national television in Russia. “In the future I hope to return home back to my country,” said the 33-year-old woman who wore a light blue dress and a visible scar on her throat. Yulia Skripal, who is under the protection of the British government, spoke in Russian from an undisclosed location and smiled as she began to speak. “It’s still hard for me to come to terms with the thought that we came under such an attack,” she said, adding she was in a coma for 20 days. “I woke to the news that we had both been poisoned,” she said.

“The fact that a nerve agent was used to do this is shocking,” she added. “We are very lucky to have survived this assassination attempt.” She said she was grateful to Russian diplomats for their help but said she “was not ready” to accept assistance from the Russian embassy at this stage. “I don’t want to go into details but I would just like to say that the treatment was invasive and deeply depressing,” she said in her first media appearance since the March 4 poisoning in the British cathedral city of Salisbury. “I try to take one day at a time and want to help my father until he fully recovers,” she added. “My life has been turned upside down and right now I am trying to come to terms with incredible changes in my life, both physical and emotional.” She called on everyone to respect her family’s privacy and thanked all those who helped her. “My recovery and that of my father remain my priority,” she said. Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson says a rousing speech by manager Jurgen Klopp following defeat in the Europa League final laid the foundations for their exhilarating Champions League run. The England midfielder said he has inspired by the manager’s motivational words after the bitter disappointment of Liverpool’s 2016 loss to Sevilla in the showpiece in Basel, where he was an unused substitute because he was not fully fit. Ndidi recovering ‘faster than expected’ for Nigeria

Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has recovered “faster than expected” from a hamstring injury and will soon join Nigeria’s full World Cup training, an official said Thursday. Ndidi has been training on his own in the southern city of Uyo, where the squad have their training camp, since the World Cup camp opened officially on Tuesday. Super Eagles spokesman Toyin Ibitoye said Ndidi’s recovery has been ahead of schedule and he will soon join the squad’s full training. “In a couple of days, he will join the full training,” Ibitoye disclosed. “He is running well without any pains, he has recovered faster than we expected. “He is now being loaded slowly and gradually to build his match fitness.” Ibitoye said the friendlies against DR Congo (May 28) and England (June 2) may be coming a little too soon for the Foxes star, but “he will be ready for the World Cup”.
