Natalie Portman says backed out of prize over Netanyahu
Hollywood actress Natalie Portman said she was backing out of a Jerusalem ceremony where she was to receive a $2 million prize to protest against the policies of Israel’s prime minister. “I chose not to attend because I did not want to appear as endorsing Benjamin Netanyahu, who was to be giving a speech at the ceremony,” Portman said in a statement posted late Friday on Instagram.
She also denied accusations by Israeli Culture Minister Miri Regev who on Friday said Portman subscribed to the ideology of the antiIsrael Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. “I am not part of the BDS movement and do not endorse it,” the Oscar-winning USIsraeli actress said. “Like many Israelis and Jews around the world, I can be critical of the leadership in Israel without wanting to boycott the entire nation,” she said. Netanyahu’s Likud party hit back on Saturday, accusing Portman of “hypocrisy”. It blasted Portman for “talking about human rights but participating in festivals in countries that censor films and whose respect for human rights is much worse than that of Israel”. On Friday the Genesis Prize Foundation said that Portman had cancelled her participation in a Jerusalem ceremony slated for the end of June. One of Portman’s representatives informed the foundation that she was troubled by “recent events” in Israel and “does not feel comfortable participating in any public event in Israel,” the foundation said. The foundation did not say which events distressed Portman. Portman said her decision to stay away from the award ceremony had been “mischaracterised”, insisting that she wanted to set the record straight and “speak for myself”. “Israel was created exactly 70 years ago as a haven for refugees from the Holocaust. But the mistreatment of those suffering from today’s atrocities is simply not in line with my Jewish values,” she said. “Because I care about Israel, I must stand against violence, corruption, inequality and abuse of power,” Portman added. Portman did not go into details, but her decision came amid a series of controversies for Netanyahu and his government. The army has come under scrutiny over its use of live fire over the past three weeks during protests and clashes along the blockaded Gaza Strip’s border with the Jewish state. In
a fourth straight Friday of mass demonstrations, four Palestinians were shot dead by Israeli forces, bringing the total death toll since March 30 to 38. Netanyahu also recently reversed a controversial deal with the UN refugee agency aimed at avoiding the forced deportations of thousands of African migrants. The Israeli premier is also the subject of a series of corruption investigations. Police in February recommended he be indicted in two of the cases and a third is ongoing. The Genesis prize, launched in 2013, is
awarded to “extraordinary individuals who serve as an inspiration to the next generation of Jews,” according to foundation’s website. Recipients contribute their winnings to causes of their choice, and Portman has said she intended to dedicate the money to programmes advancing women’s equality. At least 10 people died after a man plowed a rental van into a crowd of pedestrians in Canada’s biggest city Toronto on Monday, in what police dubbed a deliberate attack. The incident took place in broad daylight around 16 kilometers (10 miles) from a conference center hosting a meeting of G7 ministers, but officials said they had no evidence of a link to the event. “The actions definitely looked deliberate,” Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders told journalists. Ralph Goodale, the minister of public security, added that “on the basis of all available information at the present time, there would appear to be no national security connection to this particular incident.” “Horrible day in Toronto,” he had posted earlier on Twitter. “Senseless violence takes heavy toll.” Police arrested a suspect at the scene -- who police identified later as 25-year-old Alek Minassian from a northern Toronto suburb -- of the attack, whose initial death

To track waste source, DLHK will use colored fluids

The boy ran away from his Sydney home after a row with his mother, flying first to the Western Australian city of Perth on budget airline Jetstar and then on to Bali, according to commercial broadcaster Channel Nine. “He just doesn’t like the word ‘no’, and that’s what I got, a kid in Indonesia,” his mother, Emma, told Channel Nine in a programme that aired late Monday. “It’s too easy, it’s way too easy. There’s a problem in our system,” she said, calling for tighter controls on air travel by young people. The family had previously visited Bali on holiday and Emma said her son had already tried to book flights there on his own but had been knocked back by airlines because he did not have a letter from her. “We screamed, we begged for help (from Australian authorities) for weeks on end,” Emma added. “When the first attempt to Indonesia took place, we were told his passport was going to be flagged.” The boy, who “wanted to go on an adventure”, said he was told by airline staff this time that he did not need permission from his parents to board the flights. Being a leading commodity, Buleleng boosts tobacco production
BULELENG district is one of the regions in Bali having long been a producer of Virginia tobacco. Since the emergence, the tobacco cultivation has been run by farmers in partnership with the company. In line with the development, tobacco cultivation in North Bali experiences high fluctuations. This happens due to weather condition and operating costs, especially LPG for drying up tobacco. The data collected from the Buleleng Agriculture Agency mentioned the total area of planting season for tobacco cultivation in North Bali reaches 610 hectares. Farmers that cultivate the land of such area are in cooperation with two companies namely PT. Gudang Garam in the area of 350 hectares and Bringin Bali across the area of 200 hectares. When compared to planting season in 2017 with the cultivated land area of 436 hectares, this year shows an increase in terms of land acreage namely as much as 174 hectares. Tobacco cultivation in this area experiences the development of varieties. Nevertheless, the variety of Virginia tobacco since the beginning of the cultivation has always dominated. Meanwhile, other varieties such as White Burly tobacco and chopped tobacco shoots are still relatively few. As evidence, this year the cultivation area of chopped tobacco just reaches 60 hectares. Head of the Buleleng Agriculture Agency, Nyoman Genep, accompanied by acting Estate Division Head Agung Adnyana said the current development of tobacco cultivation remains in early process. Farmer groups
are still preparing their land and seedling of tobacco to be planted. For land preparation, farmers usually look for leased land. The potential land is located in some villages of Sukasada, Buleleng and Sawan sub-district. The land is leased per hectare and the lease price depends on the land and the irrigation availability. “We have set the tobacco land cultivation, and now we are in early preparations. Usually after the paddy harvest, we survey the land, cultivate and plant the seeds,” he said. Genep added that the government has not confirmed the target of tobacco production yielded by farmers in the harvest season. This happens because the production depends on the weather condition in the field. He pointed out that a few years earlier, the production of Buleleng tobacco dropped due to unfavorable weather. This triggered farmers to lose money to hundreds of millions of rupiahs. However, the season in 2017 when the weather was favorable, the tobacco production jumped again and farmers got maximal profits. In the middle of that risk, Genap reminded farmers to keep considering the weather before starting to cultivate. “Tobacco cultivation is risky, but if the weather supports, farmers can get profit as expected. Through coaching provided by Field Agricultural Extension officer (PPL) we reminded the farmers to consider well, especially the weather, so that farming having become the leading effort can bring in profits to farmers,” said Genep. Production decreases 30 percent
DENPASAR — Lack of chicken supply that occurred lately is caused by reduced day old chicken (DOC). The reduction happens because one of the DOC producers does not produce. Division Head of Breeding and Livestock Production at Bali Livestock and Animal Health Agency, IKG Nata Kusuma, said the needs for broiler DOC in Bali is supplied by three units of breeding farm production in Bali. The three units produce 6 million DOCs. In addition, Bali also receives 950,000
DOCs from outside Bali. So, there is 6.95 million DOCs in Bali per month. “The total DOC production from breeding farm reaches about 6 million if the capacity of the three units is running,” he said on Monday (Apr. 23). However, one breeding farm is not operating so the DOC sup-
ply reduces by 30 percent as each hatchery produces 30 percent of DOC or about 2 million. Non operation of one of the breeding farms happens because it has not comply with the requirements as a poultry slaughterhouse. In the meantime, DOC needed in Bali reaches 5 million. The excess
of about 1.95 million is distributed to outside Bali like to East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). “If the needs here increase, it is impossible to be sold outside,” he said. A total of 6 million DOCs are generated from 160,000 parent stock per unit per month. This parent stock produces 2.5 million eggs. The 2.5 million eggs can produce around 2 million DOCs. The 6 million DOCs can produce
5,940 tons of carcasses and 4,752 tons of pure meat. If multiplied by a year, the chicken meat production in Bali amounts to 57,024 tons. Meanwhile, the need for chicken meat in Bali amounts to 25,275 tons per year based on Bali Food Resilience Agency Data 2017. With the stability of such demand and supply, he hoped there will be price stability and can be afforded by general public. (kmb42)
Residents of Munduk Ranti complain about fly attack NEGARA — A number of residents at Munduk Ranti hamlet, Tukadaya, Melaya, complained about flies attacking to their residence. Due to such many flies, people feel uncomfortable, and it even disrupts people’s daily activities. Though some efforts to eradicate flies have been made by residents, the attack continues to occur. Allegedly, the flies are the impact of chicken coop around the residences. Some residents who met on Monday (Apr. 23) revealed that about four days ago the chicken coop was harvested, so the attack of flies is very much. Yesterday seemed to have reduced, but remained to exist. Almost all residents around the location
are attacked by flies. The mostly affected is people having a food business. Mrs. Agus, a grocer at Munduk Ranti, admitted that her house is also attacked by flies. However, this time it has begun to decrease. Mrs. Agus showed the boxes of merchandise also attacked by a lot of flies. To overcome it temporarily, she installed fly glue but has now been discarded. In addition, a stall owner admitting to sell food claimed not dare to put food outside to avoid the impact on the buyers. Not only outside, flies also rushed up indoors. According to him, before 35 days, there should be no flies. The area under the coop has already been handled. The concreted floor is kept dry all the times. He also ensured there are no larvae of flies in the coop because the area has been sprayed and handled properly. He suspected the flies come from other similar coops.
According to him, there are several coops in the Tukadaya region including at Pangkung Jajang. However, he admitted the closest coop at Munduk Ranti belongs to him. He suspected the attack of flies is caused by chicken harvest carried out almost coincidently. His coop has been sprayed with pesticides so the growth of flies not to mature. Meanwhile, headman of Tukadaya, Made Budi Utama, when asked for his confirmation claimed to have an affair to Pulukan. “I have not got any information about the attack the flies. After dragging foreigner, recidivist grabber beaten up by people
MANGUPURA - The grabbing case in Kuta targeting foreign citizens has not been able to be suppressed. The victim, Margaretha Den Ouden, 76, from the Netherlands, was dragged on Jalan Braban, Seminyak Kuta, last Thursday (Apr. 12). After the incident, police arrived at the scene and hunted the perpetrator, Made Roy, 44. Finally, the perpetrator was arrested at the intersection of Jalan Kunti and Jalan Sunset Road, Seminyak. People seeing the perpetrator immediately beat up making him black and blue.
“The perpetrator is recidivist grabber and was once arrested by Kuta Police in 2015,” said Chief of Kuta Police, I Nyoman Wirajaya, accompanied by Chief of Criminal Investigation Unit Ario Seno Wiboko on Monday (Apr. 23). Fellow Pashtuns have rallied behind Manzoor Pashteen in a dramatic outpouring of frustration over accusations of discrimination and extrajudicial killings at the hands of men in uniform. Hundreds of thousands of them have had to leave their homes near the border with Afghanistan in the last decade, fleeing fighting that erupted when the army began what the Pashtun Protection Movement (PTM) says was a selective clampdown on the militants that took refuge there after the 2001 US-led ousting of the Taliban. Echoing accusations by Washington and Kabul, PTM activists say the military continues to allow these extremists a safe haven from which to launch attacks in Afghanistan, while targeting insurgents that have turned their guns on Pakistan. “This policy... it’s very dangerous for us,” Pashteen, the movement’s 26-year-old leader, told AFP during a recent interview. The Rodong Sinmun newspaper, the mouthpiece of the ruling party, carried a front-page on Kim’s actions, including pictures of him in a doctor’s white coat, holding the two survivors’ hands as they lay in their hospital beds. Although such a move might be unsurprising in other countries, it is an unusual portrayal of Kim, who is usually shown presiding over formal meetings or visiting work or army units. Kim “said that the unexpected accident brought bitter sorrow to his heart and that he couldn’t control his grief at the thought of the bereaved families who lost their blood relatives,” KCNA reported. The North Korean leader said his people “take the tragic accident as their own misfortune”, it added.
The fulsomeness of Kim’s comments reflects the importance of China -- and its tourists -- to his country and economy. Beijing is Pyongyang’s sole major ally, providing an important economic and political buffer against international opprobrium. Their relationship was forged in the blood of the Korean War, and while it has soured more recently, with China increasingly exasperated by the North’s nuclear antics and enforcing UN Security Council sanctions against it, there has been an improvement in recent weeks. Last month, Kim embarked on his first overseas trip since inheriting power in 2011 to finally pay his respects to Chinese President Xi Jinping, and was warmly welcomed in Beijing. China is by far the biggest source of tourists for the North, with direct flights and a long land border connecting the neighbour, and tens of thousands are believed to visit every year, many crossing via train through the Chinese border city of Dandong. For some, North Korea provides a window into what Communist China may have looked like decades ago. In contrast Western visitors to the North once averaged around 5,000 a year, but numbers have been hit recently by a US travel ban –- Americans accounted for around 20 percent of the market –- and official warnings from other countries. million, it’s a large loss,” Baker told a press conference. But he said that the national carrier is not in danger of a collapse.
“You can see although that we are predicting a loss, we are still expanding, we are still investing, we are still buying airplanes.”We will keep on expanding, keep on recruiting not firing people, not parking airplanes, (and) shrinking the network, doing exactly the opposite.” Barring Qatar Airways from using its neighbours’ airspace has increased costs for the company during the 10 months since the
crisis erupted. The airline made a profit of $540 million last year and new results will be announced in June. Qatar Airways has a fleet of around 200 aircraft and over 100 more on firm orders. The outspoken Baker accused neighbouring former allies of “bullying” Qatar after they cut all ties with the emirate last June. Taking a swipe at American carriers, he said they hide behind US bankruptcy
protection laws whereas Qatar Airways does not enjoy this benefit. Baker also confirmed that plans to expand Doha’s Hamad International Airport in time for the 2022 World Cup would go ahead. But he denied recent claims in Norwegian media about labour abuse at the airport, run by Qatar Airways. “As far as the welfare of employees is concerned, we are really a role model,” he said. (afp)

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) became the first Indian company in a decade to breach the $100-billion market value barrier after stocks in the IT giant soared on Monday. Shares in India’s largest software exporter rose more than 4 percent following positive earnings results to hit a high of 3,557 rupees ($53.53) on the Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex index. The surge propelled the firm’s market capitalisation value to 681 trillion rupees, above $100 billion, as TCS became just the second Indian company in history to cross the symbolic mark. Reliance Industries, the energy-to-telecoms conglomerate owned by Asia’s richest man Mukesh Ambani, was the first Indian group to breach the $100-billion marker, back in 2008. “It is an important milestone, which not only gives us something to cheer but also changes the perspective and sentiment toward other Indian software makers,” Gaurang Shah, head investment strategist at Geojit Financial Services Ltd. in Mumbai, told Bloomberg News. The shares were spurred by a TCS earnings report released on Thursday which showed that the technology company had enjoyed a 4.4 per cent rise in consolidated net profit year-onyear for the quarter ending March. TCS recorded net profits of 69.04 billion rupees, beating many analysts’ expectations. The IT services exporter has also been boosted by a weakening rupee. TCS was at the forefront of India becoming a back office to the world as companies -- largely in developed nations -subcontracted work, taking advantage of the country’s skilled English-speaking workforce. Armenia celebrates as veteran leader quits amid protests YEREVAN - Armenia’s veteran leader Serzh Sarkisian resigned on Monday after mass protests against his election as prime minister with sweeping powers, sparking celebrations across the impoverished country. Last week lawmakers voted for Sarkisian as prime minister after he served a decade as Armenia’s president, triggering political turmoil in the Moscow-allied nation of 2.9 million people. The opposition said the move was designed to extend his chokehold on power under a new parliamentary system of government, with tens of thousands taking to the streets of the capital Yerevan and other cities in recent days in largely peaceful protests. On Monday evening the health ministry said one demonstrator, a 36-year-old man, died of heart failure after a celebratory rally in Yerevan. “Our velvet revolution has won but this is only the first step,” protest leader Nikol Pashinyan told supporters at the rally in Yerevan’s Republic Square. “Our revolution cannot stop halfway and I am hoping that you will persevere until the final victory.” The 42-year-old leader of the Civil Contract party said he would meet with the acting head of government, Karen Karapetyan, on Wednesday to discuss the transfer of power. Pashinyan -- who was hurt in the protests last week and sported a bandaged hand -- said parliament would have to elect a new prime minister “within a week” and new parliamentary elections were also in the cards. Earlier in the day the 63-year-old Sarkisian -- who previously refused to step down -- stunned the country by saying he was in the wrong and resigning. “I am leaving the post of the country’s leader,” Sarkisian was quoted as saying by his office. “Nikol Pashinyan was right,” he said. “I was wrong.” Sarkisian implied that there were several ways to resolve the crisis and that he could have used force to break up protests but chose not to. “This is not in my nature,” he added. Sarkisian quit after a number of serving and former soldiers joined the protests. The patient was severely injured by a blast from an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan several years ago, Lee said. The entire penis, scrotum without testicles and partial abdominal wall came from a deceased donor. “It’s a real mind-boggling injury to suffer; it is not an easy one to accept,” said a statement from the recipient, who asked to remain anonymous. “When I first woke up, I felt

The man lost his testicles in the explosion and did not get them restored as part of his transplant. “The testicles were not transplanted because we had made a decision early in the program to not transplant germline tissue, that is to say not transplant tissue that generates sperm because this would raise a number of ethical questions,” said JHU plastic surgeon Damon Cooney. “In particular, the ability of the recipient of the transplant to have children would result in genetic material being transmitted from the donor of the transplanted tissue to the recipient’s offspring,” Cooney added. “And we just felt there were too many unanswered ethical questions with that.” Doctors said they are hopeful

Bonita, four years old tigress, which had roamed around in human settlements and plantations since January 2018, had killed one woman and one man. On April 20, Bonita was capture alive, after being shot twice with tranquilizer, Riau Natural Resources Conservation Agency head Suharyono said in the provincial capital of Pekanbaru on Saturday. Sunarta also explained that this tourist attraction is managed by the local ‘tourism awareness group” (Porkdawis). Before that the waterfall attraction had been managed by the Undisan Kelod customary youth club. Because so many local youths have left the village for either work or further education, the management of the waterfall was taken over by the Pordawis. The funds generated from the entrance tickets, are used to construct supporting structures such
as a guard post, toilets and changing rooms fro visitors who come to melukat (purification rite). As of yet, the changing room is still quite rudimentary, but Sunarta explained that once they have enough funds, they will make further improvements, including creating a concrete guard post, instead of the bamboo one that stands there now. He added that
he hopes to have government assistance for enlarging the road to the waterfall so that cars will be able to pass through it. “Hopefully, the government will be able to provide assistance so that the road can be widened. SYDNEY - Gymnastics Australia on Tuesday unveiled new child safety guidelines and appointed its first coordinator to educate those involved in the sport about appropriate behaviour, in the wake of the US abuse scandal. The governing body said that, with 91 percent of the sport’s more than 220,000 athletes aged under 12, “child safety is the highest priority”. Gymnastics Australia (GA) chief Kitty Chiller told national broadcaster ABC the new National Child Safety Commitment Statement would be added to existing guidelines. “What we are doing now is formalising practices that have already been in place,” Chiller said, adding that the sport did not have ongoing issues with child abuse. “This is obviously very much in the media and the public space, it’s had a lot more exposure in the last recent months because of the Larry Nassar case.” A once highly-regarded US gymnastics national team doctor, Nassar was accused of abusing more than 260 athletes over two decades and was sentenced to up to 175 years in prison in January. The commitment statement pledges that national, state and ter-
ritory bodies will take a “zero tolerance approach” to any child abuse. It promises to go beyond policies and procedures to create a “culture of safety” that allows all members to feel comfortable when reporting inappropriate behaviour. The new child safety coordinator Phoebe Pownall, who will also serve in a similar role for the state body Gymnastics Victoria, said part of her job will be to educate clubs, coaches, parents and gymnasts about what constituted abuse. “I don’t think people in the community are really aware of what abuse is. We tend to think it is on the margins of society. It is not,” Pownall told The Australian newspaper Tuesday. “It is prevalent everywhere. It is about teaching people that it is a risk and empowering them to make a change and make it safe for kids.” A royal commission established in 2012 by Canberra to investigate institutional child sex abuse said in its final report released last year that more than 4,000 institutions were accused of abuse. Unstoppable Ronaldo the sole survivor of Real’s ‘BBC’ Reunions aplenty as Bayern and Real clash in Champions League semis
Two of Europe’s greatest clubs will go head to head in the Champions League on Wednesday as Bayern Munich host Real Madrid in the first leg of their semi-final. These star-studded teams are hardly strangers to the latter stages of Europe’s premier tournament and there are four men who know how it feels to represent both the white of Real and the red of Bayern. Here we look at their experiences at both clubs. Jupp Heynckes Heynckes secured a place in the hearts of Real Madrid fans by leading Los Blancos to their seventh European Cup in 1998, and their first in 32 years, with a 1-0 victory over a Juventus side that included Zinedine Zidane. Fifteen years later, Heynckes was a European champion again as coach of Bayern, who also won the Bundesliga and the German Cup under his stewardship that season. It remains Bayern’s only treble in the club’s history, although Heynckes could still repeat the feat this term, before he retires -- for a second time -- in the close season. Arjen Robben Robben moved to Real from Chelsea as one of the deadliest attackers in the world but his time in the Spanish capital is remembered more for the injuries he accumulated than the goals. After scoring only 11 times in 50 league games for Real, he found his rhythm again at Bayern, whom he joined in 2009. The Dutchman has won seven Bundesliga titles with the German giants, as well as the Champions League in 2013, and recently followed Franck Ribery in signing a contract extension until 2019. Toni Kroos Kroos began in Bayern’s youth set-up as a teenager and was the youngest player to make his debut for the club when the German played aged 17. He went on to win three Bundesliga titles and the Champions League at Bayern, but a contract dispute in 2014 opened the door to a surprise switch to Real. Forming a strong partnership alongside Luka Modric in midfield, Bayern’s loss has been Real’s gain, as Kroos has clinched two European triumphs since, as well as the Spanish title last year. James Rodriguez When James lit up the 2014 World Cup with a stunning volley for Colombia against Uruguay, it seemed almost inevitable Real would come calling. But the Colombian struggled to live up to his huge price tag and issues off the field began to chime with his disappointing performances on it. But while Ronaldo has enjoyed a fresh spurt in his new role of predatorial centre-forward, his two partners have found their responsiblities reduced ahead of the first leg at the Allianz Arena. Bale’s decline began first. After returning from injury earlier this year, he was on the bench for both legs against Paris Saint-Germain and the first leg against Juventus. In the second leg, he did start, only to endure the humiliation of being taken off at half-time. Benzema’s fall has been more surprising given the striker had been Zinedine Zidane’s preferred partner for Ronaldo, his work rate and supply highly valued despite the Frenchman’s lack of goals. But Benzema’s link-up play has slackened, thrusting that dry patch -- one goal in 10 games and only four in 24 -- more clearly into view. - ‘A little blip’ “He does suffer a little bit, when he misses chances he suffers but the solution is easy,” Zidane said. “He has to keep working. It is just a little blip he is in at the moment.” Bale and Benzema’s dip has coincided with Ronaldo’s golden run, a parallel that may not be entirely coincidental. Ronaldo in a Real team centred on playing to his strengths is nothing new, but as the Portugese has grown narrower in his scope, perhaps his team-mates have had to sharpen their focus in providing service to him. Zidane has often deployed 4-4-2 in the biggest games this season, with Lucas Vazquez and Marco Asensio preferred on the flanks for their defensive discipline and willingness to send crosses into the box. Bale is not viewed as conscientious enough in the wide midfielder role while Benzema’s key selling point was his link-up play. When that broke down, his appeal diminished.

Toffees chairman Bill Kenwright apologised for a gaffe that added to the perception Allardyce is on borrowed time with Everton. Against that troubled backdrop, Allardyce -- who has lifted Everton away from the relegation zone in his brief reign -- couldn’t afford to see his side’s winless run extend to four matches against the club that
sacked him 10 years ago. Argentine Biglia’s World Cup in doubt after back injury
AC Milan midfielder Lucas Biglia could miss the World Cup this summer with Argentina after suffering a severe back injury during the Italian club’s defeat to Benevento at the weekend. The 32-year-old was forced off the pitch after 72 minutes in Milan’s shock defeat to 10-man Benevento and the club confirmed Biglia has fractured two vertebrae in his back. “AC Milan inform that Lucas Biglia reported a severe lumbar trauma due to an injury during Saturday’s match against Benevento,” the club said in a statement. “The player has undergone medical examinations that highlighted a fracture of the transverse processes of the first two lumbar vertebrae. Sunarta also explained that this tourist attraction is managed by the local ‘tourism awareness group” (Porkdawis). Before that the waterfall attraction had been managed by the Undisan Kelod customary youth club. Because so many local youths have left the village for either work or further education, the management of the waterfall was taken over by the Pordawis. The funds generated from the entrance tickets, are used to construct supporting structures such
as a guard post, toilets and changing rooms fro visitors who come to melukat (purification rite). As of yet, the changing room is still quite rudimentary, but Sunarta explained that once they have enough funds, they will make further improvements, including creating a concrete guard post, instead of the bamboo one that stands there now. He added that
he hopes to have government assistance for enlarging the road to the waterfall so that cars will be able to pass through it. “Hopefully, the government will be able to provide assistance so that the road can be widened. SYDNEY - Gymnastics Australia on Tuesday unveiled new child safety guidelines and appointed its first coordinator to educate those involved in the sport about appropriate behaviour, in the wake of the US abuse scandal. The governing body said that, with 91 percent of the sport’s more than 220,000 athletes aged under 12, “child safety is the highest priority”. Gymnastics Australia (GA) chief Kitty Chiller told national broadcaster ABC the new National Child Safety Commitment Statement would be added to existing guidelines. “What we are doing now is formalising practices that have already been in place,” Chiller said, adding that the sport did not have ongoing issues with child abuse. “This is obviously very much in the media and the public space, it’s had a lot more exposure in the last recent months because of the Larry Nassar case.” A once highly-regarded US gymnastics national team doctor, Nassar was accused of abusing more than 260 athletes over two decades and was sentenced to up to 175 years in prison in January. The commitment statement pledges that national, state and ter-
ritory bodies will take a “zero tolerance approach” to any child abuse. It promises to go beyond policies and procedures to create a “culture of safety” that allows all members to feel comfortable when reporting inappropriate behaviour. The new child safety coordinator Phoebe Pownall, who will also serve in a similar role for the state body Gymnastics Victoria, said part of her job will be to educate clubs, coaches, parents and gymnasts about what constituted abuse. “I don’t think people in the community are really aware of what abuse is. We tend to think it is on the margins of society. It is not,” Pownall told The Australian newspaper Tuesday. “It is prevalent everywhere. It is about teaching people that it is a risk and empowering them to make a change and make it safe for kids.” A royal commission established in 2012 by Canberra to investigate institutional child sex abuse said in its final report released last year that more than 4,000 institutions were accused of abuse. Armenia celebrates as veteran leader quits amid protests YEREVAN - Armenia’s veteran leader Serzh Sarkisian resigned on Monday after mass protests against his election as prime minister with sweeping powers, sparking celebrations across the impoverished country. Last week lawmakers voted for Sarkisian as prime minister after he served a decade as Armenia’s president, triggering political turmoil in the Moscow-allied nation of 2.9 million people. The opposition said the move was designed to extend his chokehold on power under a new parliamentary system of government, with tens of thousands taking to the streets of the capital Yerevan and other cities in recent days in largely peaceful protests. On Monday evening the health ministry said one demonstrator, a 36-year-old man, died of heart failure after a celebratory rally in Yerevan. “Our velvet revolution has won but this is only the first step,” protest leader Nikol Pashinyan told supporters at the rally in Yerevan’s Republic Square. “Our revolution cannot stop halfway and I am hoping that you will persevere until the final victory.” The 42-year-old leader of the Civil Contract party said he would meet with the acting head of government, Karen Karapetyan, on Wednesday to discuss the transfer of power. Pashinyan -- who was hurt in the protests last week and sported a bandaged hand -- said parliament would have to elect a new prime minister “within a week” and new parliamentary elections were also in the cards. Earlier in the day the 63-year-old Sarkisian -- who previously refused to step down -- stunned the country by saying he was in the wrong and resigning. “I am leaving the post of the country’s leader,” Sarkisian was quoted as saying by his office. “Nikol Pashinyan was right,” he said. “I was wrong.” Sarkisian implied that there were several ways to resolve the crisis and that he could have used force to break up protests but chose not to. “This is not in my nature,” he added. Sarkisian quit after a number of serving and former soldiers joined the protests. Andrew Lee, professor and director of plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, told reporters on a conference call. The patient was severely injured by a blast from an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan several years ago, Lee said. The entire penis, scrotum without testicles and partial abdominal wall came from a deceased donor. “It’s a real mind-boggling injury to suffer; it is not an easy one to accept,” said a statement from the recipient, who asked to remain anonymous. “When I first woke up, I felt

The man lost his testicles in the explosion and did not get them restored as part of his transplant. “The testicles were not transplanted because we had made a decision early in the program to not transplant germline tissue, that is to say not transplant tissue that generates sperm because this would raise a number of ethical questions,” said JHU plastic surgeon Damon Cooney. “In particular, the ability of the recipient of the transplant to have children would result in genetic material being transmitted from the donor of the transplanted tissue to the recipient’s offspring,” Cooney added. “And we just felt there were too many unanswered ethical questions with that.” Doctors said they are hopeful

Sumatran tigers could be found in Ulu Masen National Park, Kerumutan sanctuary, Rimbang Baling, Bukit Tiga Puluh, and up to Lampung, Wiratno, director general for Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation Affairs of the ministry said here, recently. Panthera tigris sumatrae, one of the six remaining tiger species in the world, is currently in the brink of extinction due to conversion of Sumatran forests, he remarked. He called for protection of the tiger habitats and food cycles in their habitats on Sumatra Island. “There is a drastic change of
forest function in Sumatra,” he stated. In Riau Province, some 190 Sumatran tigers exist, or one third of the total tiger population on Sumatra Island. When I say we will be declaring a large loss, for me, after making profit, then even if I lost only 10
million, it’s a large loss,” Baker told a press conference. But he said that the national carrier is not in danger of a collapse.
“You can see although that we are predicting a loss, we are still expanding, we are still investing, we are still buying airplanes.”We will keep on expanding, keep on recruiting not firing people, not parking airplanes, (and) shrinking the network, doing exactly the opposite.” Barring Qatar Airways from using its neighbours’ airspace has increased costs for the company during the 10 months since the

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) became the first Indian company in a decade to breach the $100-billion market value barrier after stocks in the IT giant soared on Monday. Shares in India’s largest software exporter rose more than 4 percent following positive earnings results to hit a high of 3,557 rupees ($53.53) on the Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex index. The surge propelled the firm’s market capitalisation value to 681 trillion rupees, above $100 billion, as TCS became just the second Indian company in history to cross the symbolic mark. Reliance Industries, the energy-to-telecoms conglomerate owned by Asia’s richest man Mukesh Ambani, was the first Indian group to breach the $100-billion marker, back in 2008. “It is an important milestone, which not only gives us something to cheer but also changes the perspective and sentiment toward other Indian software makers,” Gaurang Shah, head investment strategist at Geojit Financial Services Ltd. in Mumbai, told Bloomberg News. The shares were spurred by a TCS earnings report released on Thursday which showed that the technology company had enjoyed a 4.4 per cent rise in consolidated net profit year-onyear for the quarter ending March. TCS recorded net profits of 69.04 billion rupees, beating many analysts’ expectations. The IT services exporter has also been boosted by a weakening rupee. TCS was at the forefront of India becoming a back office to the world as companies -- largely in developed nations -subcontracted work, taking advantage of the country’s skilled English-speaking workforce. After dragging foreigner, recidivist grabber beaten up by people
MANGUPURA - The grabbing case in Kuta targeting foreign citizens has not been able to be suppressed. The victim, Margaretha Den Ouden, 76, from the Netherlands, was dragged on Jalan Braban, Seminyak Kuta, last Thursday (Apr. 12). Fellow Pashtuns have rallied behind Manzoor Pashteen in a dramatic outpouring of frustration over accusations of discrimination and extrajudicial killings at the hands of men in uniform. Hundreds of thousands of them have had to leave their homes near the border with Afghanistan in the last decade, fleeing fighting that erupted when the army began what the Pashtun Protection Movement (PTM) says was a selective clampdown on the militants that took refuge there after the 2001 US-led ousting of the Taliban. In a rare admission of negative news from North Korea’s tightly controlled propaganda network, the KCNA news agency on Tuesday said Kim met personally with the Chinese ambassador in Pyongyang and later visited survivors in hospital. The Rodong Sinmun newspaper, the mouthpiece of the ruling party, carried a front-page on Kim’s actions, including pictures of him in a doctor’s white coat, holding the two survivors’ hands as they lay in their hospital beds. Although such a move might be unsurprising in other countries, it is an unusual portrayal of Kim, who is usually shown presiding over formal meetings or visiting work or army units. Kim “said that the unexpected accident brought bitter sorrow to his heart and that he couldn’t control his grief at the thought of the bereaved families who lost their blood relatives,” KCNA reported. The North Korean leader said his people “take the tragic accident as their own misfortune”, it added.
The fulsomeness of Kim’s comments reflects the importance of China -- and its tourists -- to his country and economy. Beijing is Pyongyang’s sole major ally, providing an important economic and political buffer against international opprobrium. Their relationship was forged in the blood of the Korean War, and while it has soured more recently, with China increasingly exasperated by the North’s nuclear antics and enforcing UN Security Council sanctions against it, there has been an improvement in recent weeks. Last month, Kim embarked on his first overseas trip since inheriting power in 2011 to finally pay his respects to Chinese President Xi Jinping, and was warmly welcomed in Beijing. China is by far the biggest source of tourists for the North, with direct flights and a long land border connecting the neighbour, and tens of thousands are believed to visit every year, many crossing via train through the Chinese border city of Dandong. For some, North Korea provides a window into what Communist China may have looked like decades ago. Production decreases 30 percent
DENPASAR — Lack of chicken supply that occurred lately is caused by reduced day old chicken (DOC). The reduction happens because one of the DOC producers does not produce. Division Head of Breeding and Livestock Production at Bali Livestock and Animal Health Agency, IKG Nata Kusuma, said the needs for broiler DOC in Bali is supplied by three units of breeding farm production in Bali. The three units produce 6 million DOCs. In addition, Bali also receives 950,000
DOCs from outside Bali. So, there is 6.95 million DOCs in Bali per month. “The total DOC production from breeding farm reaches about 6 million if the capacity of the three units is running,” he said on Monday (Apr. 23). However, one breeding farm is not operating so the DOC sup-
ply reduces by 30 percent as each hatchery produces 30 percent of DOC or about 2 million. Non operation of one of the breeding farms happens because it has not comply with the requirements as a poultry slaughterhouse. In the meantime, DOC needed in Bali reaches 5 million. The excess
of about 1.95 million is distributed to outside Bali like to East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). “If the needs here increase, it is impossible to be sold outside,” he said. A total of 6 million DOCs are generated from 160,000 parent stock per unit per month. This parent stock produces 2.5 million eggs. The 2.5 million eggs can produce around 2 million DOCs. The 6 million DOCs can produce
5,940 tons of carcasses and 4,752 tons of pure meat. If multiplied by a year, the chicken meat production in Bali amounts to 57,024 tons. Meanwhile, the need for chicken meat in Bali amounts to 25,275 tons per year based on Bali Food Resilience Agency Data 2017. Allegedly, the flies are the impact of chicken coop around the residences. are attacked by flies. The mostly affected is people having a food business. Mrs. Agus, a grocer at Munduk Ranti, admitted that her house is also attacked by flies. He suspected the attack of flies is caused by chicken harvest carried out almost coincidently. His coop has been sprayed with pesticides so the growth of flies not to mature. Meanwhile, headman of Tukadaya, Made Budi Utama, when asked for his confirmation claimed to have an affair to Pulukan. “I have not got any information about the attack the flies. Being a leading commodity, Buleleng boosts tobacco production
BULELENG district is one of the regions in Bali having long been a producer of Virginia tobacco. Since the emergence, the tobacco cultivation has been run by farmers in partnership with the company. In line with the development, tobacco cultivation in North Bali experiences high fluctuations. This happens due to weather condition and operating costs, especially LPG for drying up tobacco. The data collected from the Buleleng Agriculture Agency mentioned the total area of planting season for tobacco cultivation in North Bali reaches 610 hectares. Farmers that cultivate the land of such area are in cooperation with two companies namely PT. Gudang Garam in the area of 350 hectares and Bringin Bali across the area of 200 hectares. When compared to planting season in 2017 with the cultivated land area of 436 hectares, this year shows an increase in terms of land acreage namely as much as 174 hectares. Tobacco cultivation in this area experiences the development of varieties. Nevertheless, the variety of Virginia tobacco since the beginning of the cultivation has always dominated. Meanwhile, other varieties such as White Burly tobacco and chopped tobacco shoots are still relatively few. As evidence, this year the cultivation area of chopped tobacco just reaches 60 hectares. Head of the Buleleng Agriculture Agency, Nyoman Genep, accompanied by acting Estate Division Head Agung Adnyana said the current development of tobacco cultivation remains in early process. are still preparing their land and seedling of tobacco to be planted. For land preparation, farmers usually look for leased land. The potential land is located in some villages of Sukasada, Buleleng and Sawan sub-district. The land is leased per hectare and the lease price depends on the land and the irrigation availability. “We have set the tobacco land cultivation, and now we are in early preparations. Usually after the paddy harvest, we survey the land, cultivate and plant the seeds,” he said. Genep added that the government has not confirmed the target of tobacco production yielded by farmers in the harvest season. This happens because the production depends on the weather condition in the field. He pointed out that a few years earlier, the production of Buleleng tobacco dropped due to unfavorable weather. This triggered farmers to lose money to hundreds of millions of rupiahs. However, the season in 2017 when the weather was favorable, the tobacco production jumped again and farmers got maximal profits. In the middle of that risk, Genap reminded farmers to keep considering the weather before starting to cultivate. “Tobacco cultivation is risky, but if the weather supports, farmers can get profit as expected. Through coaching provided by Field Agricultural Extension officer (PPL) we reminded the farmers to consider well, especially the weather, so that farming having become the leading effort can bring in profits to farmers,” said Genep. Natalie Portman says backed out of prize over Netanyahu
Hollywood actress Natalie Portman said she was backing out of a Jerusalem ceremony where she was to receive a $2 million prize to protest against the policies of Israel’s prime minister. “I chose not to attend because I did not want to appear as endorsing Benjamin Netanyahu, who was to be giving a speech at the ceremony,” Portman said in a statement posted late Friday on Instagram.
She also denied accusations by Israeli Culture Minister Miri Regev who on Friday said Portman subscribed to the ideology of the antiIsrael Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. “I am not part of the BDS movement and do not endorse it,” the Oscar-winning USIsraeli actress said. “Like many Israelis and Jews around the world, I can be critical of the leadership in Israel without wanting to boycott the entire nation,” she said. Netanyahu’s Likud party hit back on Saturday, accusing Portman of “hypocrisy”. It blasted Portman for “talking about human rights but participating in festivals in countries that censor films and whose respect for human rights is much worse than that of Israel”. On Friday the Genesis Prize Foundation said that Portman had cancelled her participation in a Jerusalem ceremony slated for the end of June. One of Portman’s representatives informed the foundation that she was troubled by “recent events” in Israel and “does not feel comfortable participating in any public event in Israel,” the foundation said. The foundation did not say which events distressed Portman. Portman said her decision to stay away from the award ceremony had been “mischaracterised”, insisting that she wanted to set the record straight and “speak for myself”. “Israel was created exactly 70 years ago as a haven for refugees from the Holocaust. But the mistreatment of those suffering from today’s atrocities is simply not in line with my Jewish values,” she said. “Because I care about Israel, I must stand against violence, corruption, inequality and abuse of power,” Portman added. Portman did not go into details, but her decision came amid a series of controversies for Netanyahu and his government. The army has come under scrutiny over its use of live fire over the past three weeks during protests and clashes along the blockaded Gaza Strip’s border with the Jewish state. In
a fourth straight Friday of mass demonstrations, four Palestinians were shot dead by Israeli forces, bringing the total death toll since March 30 to 38. Netanyahu also recently reversed a controversial deal with the UN refugee agency aimed at avoiding the forced deportations of thousands of African migrants. The Israeli premier is also the subject of a series of corruption investigations. Police in February recommended he be indicted in two of the cases and a third is ongoing. The Genesis prize, launched in 2013, is
awarded to “extraordinary individuals who serve as an inspiration to the next generation of Jews,” according to foundation’s website. Recipients contribute their winnings to causes of their choice, and Portman has said she intended to dedicate the money to programmes advancing women’s equality. At least 10 people died after a man plowed a rental van into a crowd of pedestrians in Canada’s biggest city Toronto on Monday, in what police dubbed a deliberate attack. The incident took place in broad daylight around 16 kilometers (10 miles) from a conference center hosting a meeting of G7 ministers, but officials said they had no evidence of a link to the event. “The actions definitely looked deliberate,” Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders told journalists. Ralph Goodale, the minister of public security, added that “on the basis of all available information at the present time, there would appear to be no national security connection to this particular incident.” “Horrible day in Toronto,” he had posted earlier on Twitter. “Senseless violence takes heavy toll.” Police arrested a suspect at the scene -- who police identified later as 25-year-old Alek Minassian from a northern Toronto suburb -- of the attack, whose initial death

officer in the western city of Edmonton before slamming his van into a group of pedestrians, hurting four people. And in Quebec in October 2014, a Canadian man ran over two soldiers in a parking lot with his car, killing one of them. The driver was shot dead by police when he attacked them with a knife.
