‘Fate of the Furious’ Stays on Top; ‘Unforgettable,’ ‘The Promise’ Bomb

LOS ANGELES - “The Fate of the Furious” is racing to defend its title at the top of the box office, while a number of new releases including “The Promise” and “Unforgettable” are being left in the dust.

Universal’s eighth installment in the Fast and Furious franchise proved to be a global box office titan when it opened last weekend to a record-shattering $532.5 million. This time around looks to tell mostly the same story -- while domestic grosses slipped 61% from its first to second weekend, the movie is still easily topping the box office with $38.7 million from 4,329 locations. But slipping domestic earnings (and lower U.S. grosses than “Furious 7,” which pulled over $250 million in its first two weekends versus “Fate’s” current sum of $163.6 million) are majorly overshadowed by the movie’s international appeal. A bankable, diverse cast including Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel and Charlize Theron is leading the film, directed by F. Gary Gray, to a two-frame global total of $744.8 million and worldwide sum of $908.4 million. While studios wait for summer season to commence, there are no surprise hits to come of this weekend’s releases. Warner Bros.’ “Unforgettable” seems to have

slipped audiences’ minds, earning $4.8 million in its first weekend from 2,417 theaters. “It just didn’t resonate with the intended audience,” said Jeff Goldstein, the president of domestic distribution at Warner Bros. Goldstein stressed that the movie was made for a moderate price, and the marketing was “targeted and appropriate” for the audience. The directorial debut of Denise Di Novi stars Katherine Heigl as a scorned ex-wife, and Rosario Dawson as a woman who is newly engaged to the same man. In his review for Variety, critic Peter Debruge lauded Heigl’s “terrific” performance, and wrote that her casting “savvily exploits the actress’s prickly reputation within the industry.” “Unforgettable” joins a string of so-so to disappointing releases from Warner Bros. so far this year, including “Chips” and “Fist Fight.” At least the Heigl movie had a low production budget ( about $12 million) to minimize losses. “The Promise,” too, couldn’t follow through, despite a social media push from stars including Leonardo DiCaprio, the Kardashian sisters and Cher. The movie, from Open Road Films on behalf of Survival Pictures, looks to round out the weekend with about $4.1 million from 2,251 locations -- barely cracking the top ten for the weekend. (rtr)

Hillary Clinton makes surprise appearance at New York film panel

NEW YORK - Hillary Clinton, who until recently had avoided the spotlight in the wake of her election defeat in November, made a surprise appearance at New York’s Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday as a panelist to discuss illegal elephant poaching. The discussion followed the premiere of Academy Award-winning director Kathryn Bigelow’s virtual reality documentary “The Protectors: Walk in the Rangers’ Shoes.” The eight-minute film allows viewers to experience what it is like to work as a park ranger trying to save elephants in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. “We’ve got to bust this market,” Clinton said of the global ivory trade. The unexpected public appearance on Earth Day was one of several Clinton has made recently, following a period of silence after the former Democratic presidential candidate lost the November election to President Donald Trump. Clinton said she first began focusing on the “horrific slaughter” of elephants when she was secretary

of state and later helped launch an anti-poaching initiative at her family’s nonprofit Clinton Global Initiative. More than 30,000 elephants are killed by poachers every year in Africa. In addition to endangering vulnerable elephant populations, trafficking also provides financial support to extremist militant groups, Clinton said. “When we were looking at this, we thought there were three overriding goals: stop the killing, stop the trafficking and stop the demand,” she said. While China is the world’s biggest market for illegal ivory, the United States ranks No. 2, Clinton said, requiring Americans to take a leading role in fighting elephant poaching. Clinton also mentioned the March for Science, which took place in Washington and other cities around the world earlier on Saturday. Ahead of Sunday’s vote, markets had been contemplating a variety of nightmare scenarios for them, including one in which Le Pen would go through to a runoff against the far left’s Jean-Luc Melenchon. The communist-backed candidate, who made a late surge in opinion polls, finished in fourth place. Le Pen will be keen to avoid a repetition of 2002 when her father and National Front founder, JeanMarie Le Pen, got through to the second round in a surprise vote but went on to lose in a humiliating landslide against right-wing president Jacques Chirac. Analysts say Le Pen’s best chance of hauling back Macron’s big lead in the polls is to paint him as a part of an elite aloof from ordinary French people and their problems. Part of that strategy would be to remind voters of Macron’s former role as a deal-maker in investment banking and economy minister under Hollande. Without waiting for figures from the count, two defeated candidates - conservative Francois Fillon and socialist Benoit Hamon - urged their supporters now to throw their energies into backing Macron to stop any chance of victory by Le Pen, whose anti-immigration and anti-Europe policies they said spelled disaster for France. Melenchon declined to back either of the two. Manuel Valls, a former Socialist prime minister on the right-wing of the party who broke with Hamon’s campaign after failing to beat him for the party ticket, said he would be ready to work with Macron. “We must help him (Macron) as much as we can to ensure Le Pen is kept as low down as possible,” Valls said on France Inter radio.

Bali named World’s Best Destination 2017 by TripAdvisor

BALI becomes the first Asia’s tourist destination reaching first rank as the World’s Best Destination in the TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Award and beat out 418 other leading destinations around the world. TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Award was received by Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, represented by Assistant of Economy and Development Administration of Bali Provincial Secretary, I Dewa Putu Sunartha, in Seminyak, on Thursday (Apr. 20). Governor Pastika in his speech read by Sunartha expressed that the award is the choice of travelers and TripAdvisor users from around the globe that certainly have come to Bali and considered Bali as a tourist destination worth visiting. “With this award, I hope more and more travelers will visit Bali. It is not enough to just come once, but come again and again because various interesting objects and attractions have been waiting for them in Bali,” he said. Deputy of Tourism Marketing Development, Ministry of Tourism, I Gde Pitana, who represented the central government, said the award will strengthen Indonesia’s position as a country that prioritizes tourism. According to him, this award gives Bali three things that he called as 3C, namely Credibility, Confidence and Calibration. “All the awards given by international agencies are not delivered as such, but have definite and measurable indicators because tourism is a global industry, so that it applies global standards,” he said. As award-giver, Sarah Matthews, Head of Destination Marketing for TripAdvisor Asia Pacific, said the winners of the TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Award were selected based on millions of reviews and opinions made by travelers around the world within 12 months. Globally, the reviews and objective opinions on the TripAdvisor have surpassed 500 million, with 290 contents per minute every day, said the woman claimed to travel to Bali for the first time 30 years ago. “Bali is a tourist destination with the best experience for various types of travelers, such as nature, cultural and gastronomic tourism so that it is not strange if they want to share their experience with the world,” he said. CAPE CANAVERAL - NASA’s Cassini spacecraft soared past Saturn’s biggest moon for the last time on Saturday, tapping its gravity to slingshot into a series of exploratory dives inside the planet’s rings, followed by a final fatal plunge into the gas giant. After nearly 20 years of traveling in space, Cassini used the gravitational tug of Titan, a moon resembling primordial Earth, to hurl itself into a new orbit that will pass through an unexplored region between Saturn’s cloud tops and its rings. The spacecraft is expected to make the first of 22 dives between the planet and its rings on Wednes-

day. During the last dive on Sept. 15, Cassini is slated to destroy itself by flying directly into Saturn’s crushing atmosphere. Cassini’s final run was set into motion early on Saturday by its 127th and final pass by Titan, the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration said. At its closest approach, NASA

projections had Cassini flying 608 miles (979 km) above Titan, zipping by at a relative speed of 13,000 miles per hour (21,000 km per hour), “Titan’s gravity will bend Cassini’s orbit around Saturn, shrinking it slightly, so that instead of passing just outside the rings, the spacecraft will begin its finale dives which pass just inside the rings,” NASA

said in a statement on Wednesday. During the dives, Cassini will measure how much ice and other materials are in the rings and determine their chemical composition. That information will help scientists learn how the rings formed. Cassini also will study Saturn’s atmosphere and take measurements to determine the size of the planet’s rocky core. Cassini has been probing Saturn, the sixth planet from the sun, and its entourage of 62 known moons

since July 2004, but is running low on fuel. NASA plans to crash the spacecraft into Saturn to avoid any chance Cassini could someday collide with Titan, the ocean-bearing moon Enceladus or any other moon that has the potential to support indigenous microbial life. By destroying the spacecraft, NASA will ensure that any hitchhiking Earth microbes still alive on Cassini will not contaminate the moons for future study. (rtr)

China’s first cargo spacecraft docks with orbiting space lab SHANGHAI - China’s first cargo spacecraft docked successfully with the Tiangong-2 space lab on Saturday, the official Xinhua news agency reported, marking a major step towards Beijing’s goal of establishing a permanently manned space station by 2022. President Xi Jinping has prioritised advancing China’s space programme to strengthen national security. The Tianzhou-1 cargo resupply spacecraft made the automated docking process with the orbiting space lab after it had taken off on Thursday evening from the Wenchang Satellite Launch Centre in the southern island province of Hainan. The Tiangong-2 space laboratory, or “Heavenly Palace 2”, was home to two astronauts for a month last October in China’s longest ever manned space mission. The cargo spacecraft mission provides an

“important technological basis” to build a Chinese space station, state media have said. It can reportedly carry 6 tonnes of goods, 2 tonnes of fuel and can fly unmanned for three months. Despite the advances in China’s space programme for military, commercial and scientific purposes, China still lags behind the United States and Russia. In late 2013, China’s Jade Rabbit rover landed on the Moon to great national fanfare, but ran into severe technical difficulties. The U.S. Defense Department has highlighted China’s increasing space capabilities, saying it was pursuing activities aimed at preventing other nations from using spacebased assets in a crisis. Division Head of Road Traffic, Gede Ngurah Sarjaya, said at his office on Wednesday (Apr. 19) that the trial period on the first and second day could only draw the interest of a few students to ride school bus. Seeing this result, his agency has made evaluation. Students are said to be reluctant to ride the school bus for fear of being charged a ticket. In addition, during school hours students generally spread, so that school bus cannot reach more students. Different situation happens after school hours, where students gather at school, so that once the bus arrives they can be served in greater numbers. “Indeed, we just served not more than ten students on the first and second day. We have evaluated and at the beginning of the trial students did not want to ride because they worry about having to pay ticket. Besides, there are no gathering points at the two departure locations of the bus,”

he said. On the third day of trial, students begin to be interested to ride a bus when going to school or leaving school. Last Wednesday the whole seats of both buses were fully occupied. Moreover, some students had to stand up with the help of handrails prepared in the bus. Above the result, Sarjaya is getting more optimistic if the school bus program has begun to be utilized by students. He reminded the bus crews to keep serving students according to the existing procedures. In order to more convince the free service, bus crews are asked to disseminate it to students that have ridden school bus and also asked the students to spread this information to their friends of the same school or different schools. “From the beginning, the fixed procedures are already well implemented by bus crews. Now, there are more and more passengers, and our bus crews are asked to keep disseminating this service, so that in the future the service provided can be optimally utilized by students whose school is passed through by route of the school bus,” he explained.

One school bus leaves Sukasada Terminal (Sukasada) and passes through Jalan Jelatik Gingsir, Veteran, Ngurah Rai, Lieutenant Colonel Wisnu, Gajah Mada, Diponegoro, Erlangga and ends at Penarukan Terminal (Buleleng subdistrict). Then, another bus departs from Penarukan Terminal passes through Jalan Surapati, Imam Bonjol, Sutomo, Pramuka, Ngurah Rai, Veteran, Jelatik Gingsir and ends at Sukasada Terminal. The total distance covered by the school bus reaches approximately 20 kilometers with 18 school locations consisting of elementary, junior high and high school or vocational school. When operating, each bus consumes 15 liters of fuel, so that every day the fuel consumption reaches about 30 liters. Fuel purchases, bus maintenance and bus operating costs are fully allocated in the Buleleng regional budget. After the trial period ends, the transportation agency will evaluate to find out the obstacles faced in the field. Perforated coins inscribed in Chinese scripts have existed since hundreds of years ago and used as a legal means of payment in their home country. Meanwhile, the perforated coins with Balinese scripts have began to exist and produced since 2004 at Tojan village, Klungkung. I Made Sukma Swacita is one of the artisans at Tojan village who produces perforated coins with Balinese scripts. He said that perforated coins inscribed with Balinese scripts have been produced for the needs of ritual and souvenirs. The products intended for ritual needs have three types, namely the one inscribed with five Balinese scripts of Sa, Ba, Ta, A, and I; the one inscribed with Ang and Ah script; and another one with Padma image or lotus symbolizing sanctity. Swacita stated that pursuant to the result of seminar regarding the perforated coins presented by some higher priests in 2003, the perforated coins for ritual needs are produced by melting five metal materials or better known as pancha datu. The five metals include gold, silver, brass, copper and iron. In accordance with Hindu religious belief in Bali,

these five metals contain five powers influenced by the powers of the gods so that they are used for ceremonies. Swacita said although the use of perforated coins made from pancha datu for complementary means of ritual has been proclaimed since the leadership of Dewa Barata, until now not all people want to use it. Society, said Swacita, many people still choose to use fake perforated coins that are not made from pancha datu material. This happens because the price is much cheaper compared to perforated coins made from pancha datu. He mentioned that perforated coin is sold for IDR 1 million per 1,000 pieces; while the fake perforated coins that are not made from pancha datu material can be obtained by the community at a very cheap price of only IDR 50,000 per 1,000 pieces. “Most people prefer to purchase cheap coins because many of them still do not understand about the core matter of the pancha datu,” he explained. He revealed that all this time the perforated coins that are not made from pancha datu widely circulating in the market are brought in from Java. Swacita acknowledged that circulation of the perforated coins from Java is considered to adequately rival the marketing of pancha datu coins made by Tojan artisans. “So, in the future there should be provision on the understanding regarding the purpose of using perforated coins made of pancha datu in ritual,” he said. Province prepares IDR 300 billion for road maintenance and improvement

DENPASAR - This year, Bali provincial government is ready to prepare budget around IDR 300 billion for road improvement and maintenance. The budget is only to handle the road along 743.34 km from 850.63 km last year. This happens due to the road section of Besakih and Sakah-Tampaksiring is taken over by central government. “It means that at least at the end of 2018 we are targeted to complete where 84 percent of the roads are in steady condition. Previously, it was ready 82 percent,” said the Head of the Bali Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency, I Nyoman Astawa Riadi, in Denpasar, recently. Astawa added that road maintenance has been regularly held. Without maintenance, the road condi-

As the monitoring, the provincial road is prone to damage at the road section of Petang (Badung), Kintamani (Bangli) and Pupuan (Tabanan). “We will handle the points in the areas like Petang as they are prone to disaster, especially landslides. “Australia first” fortifies position of country’s prime minister

SYDNEY - Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has recorded a rise in voter support just days after tightening rules for foreigners seeking work and citizenship under an “Australia first” policy, a newspaper poll showed on Monday. Xi told Trump that China resolutely opposes any actions that run counter to U.N. Security Council resolutions, a Chinese foreign ministry statement said. China “hopes that all relevant sides exercise restraint, and avoid doing anything to worsen the tense situation on the peninsula”, the statement paraphrased Xi as saying. The nuclear issue can only be resolved quickly with all relevant countries pulling in the same direction, and China is willing to work with all parties, including the United States, to ensure peace, Xi said. The issue has gained added urgency as North Korea prepares to celebrate the 85th anniversary of the foundation of its Korean People’s Army on Tuesday. BUSINESS Restored Saudi state perks may avert recession, help economic reforms

DUBAI - The decision by Saudi Arabia’s King Salman to restore cuts to financial allowances for civil servants and military personnel is being seen as helping the kingdom avoid recession this year while smoothing the path toward economic reforms. Last September, the government sharply reduced financial perks for employees in the public sector, where most Saudis work, in one of its most drastic steps yet to curb a huge budget deficit caused by low oil prices.

Analysts have estimated that restoring the financial perks would put around 50 billion to 80 billion riyals ($13.3 billion to $21.3 billion) annually in consumers’ pockets. Finance Minister Mohammed al-Jadaan told Al Arabiya television that payments would start by the end of May, just before the holy month of Ramadan, when Saudis traditionally splurge on holiday items and travel. Deputy Economy Minister Mohammed al-Tuwaijri said restoring the allowances was possible because Riyadh had made faster-than-expected progress in cutting its deficit. The gap was 26 billion riyals in the first quarter of 2017, well below the government’s projection of 54 billion riyals, he said. Riyadh has forecast a deficit of 198 billion riyals in 2017 and aims to eliminate the gap by 2020. However, the boost to consumer spending from the restored public will eventually be offset by new austerity measures. A tax on tobacco and sugary drinks will be introduced in coming weeks, raising up to 10 billion riyals annually. Officials also aim to hike domestic fuel and water prices in coming months, raising an additional 29 billion riyals. And a 5 percent value-added tax on most products is to be imposed at the start of 2018. Nevertheless, Sfakianakis estimated restoring the public perks would add half a percentage point to the non-oil economy this year, bringing its growth to around 1 percent. That could be enough for Saudi Arabia to avoid recession -- an important achievement for the economic reformers. A Reuters poll of analysts this month found them forecasting median Saudi gross domestic product growth of just 0.5 percent in 2017. A 1.4 percent rise in the Saudi stock index on Sunday, led by retailing companies, showed investors expect a boost to consumer spending. Authorities also signalled on Saturday that they intended to move ahead with a part of the reform programme that is popular among many ordinary Saudis: reducing corruption and making the government more transparent. A royal decree dismissed the kingdom’s information and civil service ministers and set up a committee to investigate allegations of abuse of the civil service office. DUBAI — Emirati and Malaysian officials said Monday they reached a deal to resolve a legal dispute over the indebted and troubled Malaysian investment fund 1MDB, with the United Arab Emirates set to receive $1.2 billion over this year. The deal, which still would need to be approved by an arbitration panel in London, resolves merely one part of the sprawling, worldwide investigation into 1MDB. Money from the fund, which was to develop Malaysia’s economy, instead found itself funneled through a global embezzlement and money-laundering scheme involving people close to Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, luxury properties and the production of the 2013 film “The Wolf of Wall Street,” U.S. investigators allege. In 2016, the Abu Dhabi-based International Petroleum Investment Co. alleged 1MDB defaulted on more than $1.1 billion in debt it owed to the sovereign wealth fund and its subsidiary, Aabar Investments. It filed a case against the fund in the London Court of International Arbitration.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak started the fund shortly after taking office in 2009 to promote economic development projects, but the fund accumulated billions in debt. Najib has denied any wrongdoing, but the scandal sparked a mass rally in November against his government. In the UAE, the former head of IPIC, Khadem al-Qubaisi, is named in a series of court documents filed by U.S. federal prosecutors as receiving money from the 1MDB scam and buying luxury properties. He resigned from IPIC in April 2015 and his current whereabouts are unknown. In June, Abu Dhabi’s crown prince, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, ordered that IPIC merge with the Mubadala Development Co., another of the emirate’s sovereign wealth fund, amid a cash crunch brought on low global oil prices. KABUL - Eight days after the U.S. military dropped its largest ever conventional bomb on suspected Islamic State fighters in eastern Afghanistan, Taliban militants breached an army base in the north of the country and killed scores of local soldiers. To Afghan and other critics of President Donald Trump’s apparent indecision over how to win a seemingly intractable war, Friday’s assault - the worse of its kind since the Taliban were ousted in 2001 - was evidence he was getting it wrong.

“The biggest threat to the security and stability of this country is the Taliban insurgents, not Daesh forces,” said Mirwais Yasini, an influential Afghan member of parliament from Nangarhar province, using an Arabic term for Islamic State. “You drop your biggest bomb on Daesh, but what about the Taliban who kill dozens of our people every day?” The American military command in Kabul did not respond to a request for comment, but in the wake of the base attack the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, General John Nicholson, promised to “continue to stand” with Afghan security forces. Nearly 9,000 U.S. troops remain in Afghanistan, some 7,000 of them to train and assist local forces that Washington has spent billions of dollars to build virtually from scratch in the hope of one day handing over control completely. While the advisers are seldom involved in direct combat with the Taliban or other militants, a smaller counter-terrorism unit of about 1,500 soldiers does engage insurgents, but its main targets are pockets of al Qaeda and Islamic State fighters. They are estimated to number in their hundreds, while the Taliban number thousands or tens of thousands and have gained swathes of territory in the last few years. France’s Macron favourite for presidency in runoff with Le Pen

PARIS - Centrist Emmanuel Macron took a big step towards the French presidency on Sunday by winning the first round of voting and qualifying for a May 7 runoff alongside far-right leader Marine Le Pen. Though Macron, 39, is a comparative political novice who has never held elected office, new opinion polls on Sunday had him easily winning the final clash against the 48-year-old Le Pen. Sunday’s outcome is a huge defeat for the two centre-right and centre-left groupings that have dominated French politics for 60 years, and also reduces the prospect of an anti-establishment shock on the scale of Britain’s vote last June to quit the European Union and the election of Donald Trump as U.S. president. JAKARTA - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi and PT Pelabuhan Indonesia II President Director Elvyn G Masassya welcomed the arrival of the largest container ship CMA CGM Otello which berthed at Jakarta International Container Terminal here, Sunday. PT Pelabuhan Indonesia II/ Indonesian Port Corporation II (IPC) has previously welcomed the 8,238 TEUs capacity container ship for the first time on April 9, 2017. The ship belongs to French shipping lines Compagnie Maritime dAffretement-Compagnie Generali Maritime (CMA-CGM). The arrival of the ship is in conjunction with the cooperation to serve a new route with the Java South East Asia Express Services (JAX Service). It will serve the route from Tanjung Priok (Jakarta) to West Coast, Los Agneles and Oakland of the United States with a routine Sunday berth system.
