Misfortune was experienced by a Japanese tourist named Eri Asano, 25, Wednesday (Mar 23). When paying a visit to Kerthagosa tourist attraction, Klungkung, she lost her wallet causing a loss of cash worth JPY 35,000. Accompanied by her boy friend who is also a Japanese citizen, Eri Asano reported the case to Klungkung Police Headquarters. Eri Asano admitted to be very keen to visit the Dutch heritage tourist object (Kerthagosa) showing off the splendor of Kamasan puppet painting style that told stories about the court system in the past. However, when having a look at some corners around 11:00 a.m. Local Time, she was not aware if her red wallet had vanished. She rushed to do a search around the location. Unfortunately, she failed. The volume of seawater along the coastal territory of Klungkung starting from Tegalbesar, Banjarangkan (west) to Goa Lawah, Dawan (east) increases. Even, the high tides reached five meters to the beach. The condition caused more than one hundred people looking for pebble mesh to lose their job. Likewise, fishermen turned anxious because the high tides had reached the parking lot of traditional boats. Even, some fishing boats were virtually crashed due to high tides. One of the high tides was seen on the Segara Beach, Kusamba, Wednesday (Mar 23). The area habitually overwhelmed by seekers of pebble mesh was deserted then. Similarly, the area of pebble mesh mine looked to have narrowed. A number of fishermen found at location mentioned that high tides had occurred since last Saturday (Mar 19) coinciding with the full moon in the tenth month of Balinese calendar. “By and large, the high tides occurred at 10:00 a.m. until 16:00 p.m. Local Time every day since the full moon,” said a fisherman from Pancingan Hamlet, Kusamba, Dawan, Nengah Kasih. According to Kasih, high tides indeed occurred in the tenth month of Balinese

calendar. The sea water rose some 57 meters to the beach. “Therefore, the beach usually overwhelmed by pebble mesh seekers is now deserted because the site of pebble mesh mine was inundated and so was the parking lot of fishing boats,” he said. Such conditions, added Kasih, made fishermen carry out extra tight supervision against their boats to prevent them from being crashed or drifted due to high tides. “Last year, many traditional boats were damaged as they were clashing each other due to the high tides. We do not want if it happens again,” he said. So far, they recognized the tides did not inhibit their activity to go down to sea. High tides did not have an impact on the waves. “The waves stay stable or normal. However, the result of our catch is only some few because today is not the fishing season,” he said. Typically, the Segara Beach was overwhelmed by more than one hundred seekers of pebble mesh consisting of women, men, children and adults. On average, by amassing pebble mesh they could earn IDR 10,000 to IDR 20,000 every day. (kmb20)

Transmission of deadly disease in Bangli Regency is increasingly apprehensive. Aside from being faced with rabies cases claiming four lives, the spread of deadly sexually transmitted diseases like HIV and AIDS in Bangli is no less ferociously compared to rabies. Even, they have increased significantly through the years. Just imagine, from the data collected in the Bangli Health Services and AIDS Prevention Commission of Bangli Regency on Wednesday (Mar 23), the number of people living with HIV/AIDS was only 4 people. But, at the end of 2010 the number of positive cases to HIV/ AIDS has increased significantly reaching 48 positive cases (data of Health Services). More ironically, the number boosted based on voluntary

counseling and testing (VCT) in Bangli Hospital. Out of the 44 cases suspected to be HIV, in fact 30 people were declared to be positive to HIV/AIDS. On that account, the number of people living with HIV/AIDS in Bangli had been recorded to reach 78 cases and seven patients died. Of the four subdistricts in Bangli, the one with highest HIV /ADS cases was occupied by subdistrict of Kintamani, and then followed by Susut subdistrict. The Head of Bangli Health Services, I Gusti Ngurah Rai, said that based on provincial data on HIV/AIDS by the end of December as many as 44 cases were found in Bangli. The number was detected after sick people were referred to VCT in Sanglah Hospital and finally found that number. However, after the Bangli Hospital was equipped with VCT for HIV/ AIDS, in fact out of 44

HIV/AIDS suspects as many as 30 were tested positive. According to him, those cases had emerged recently. It was estimated, there were some cases seemingly left undetected. It was said the average of those tested positive to HIV/ AIDS were of productive ages. Among the four subdistricts in Bangli, the most cases of HIV AIDS occurred in Kintamani. Possibly, it was caused by the activities of local community. For instance, as a driver or businessman they often travelled to outside the region while getting in touched with prostitutes there. In years to come, local community was appealed to declare a fight against the deadly disease by keeping away from unhealthy behaviors. Indonesian Arrival Targets still 7 million tourists

Development of tourism village hampered by accommodation Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Bali has tremendous rural potentials to be developed. However, the development of current tourism village is not supported by the provision of adequate accommodation. Trustee Chairman of the Association of Bali Ecological Tourism Village (DWE), I Gede Ardika, said the development of tourism village should be increased especially in the provision of accommodation, so that tourists spending holiday in Bali got interested to stay in the village. “Actually we have had many tourism villages, but they are still lacking in the provision of accommodation and other supporting facilities,” said Ardika in Denpasar, Wednesday (Mar 23). According to him, the village tourism was a tourism dedicated to improve the household incomes of Balinese community by persistently implementing local cultural values in maintaining the environment and social life based on mutual agreement of the society. Establishment of fair rural community life and residents having the capability of addressing the tourism development would provide increased prosperity and preservation of culture and environment. “This type of tourism is conducted at villages, not in town, as a territory controlled, managed and used by a group of people with clear rules,” he said. Ardika also explained that tourism village by community-based tourism (PIR) scheme was defined as a rural area offering the unique and interesting ambience that reflected the authenticity of countryside, social and economic life, social culture, customs, daily life, architecture,

spatial structure of a typical village and economic activities. Additionally, village tourism also had potential for the development of various tourism components such as attractions, accommodation, food, beverages and other travel needs. “Ecological tourism village puts more emphases on the unity of village territory owned by the community and had particular rules in the management and spatial utilization in it. It is inseparable from the elements specified in tourism village,” he said. Nevertheless, the ecological tourism village and communitybased tourism had the same goal namely to achieve sustainable tourism. Embodiment of this scheme was pursued in three ways such as by proposing a discourse and strategy towards social movements; strengthening civil society organizations and societal movements oriented to reinforcement of base community capacity and strategy of resources decentralization; and by bringing a gender perspective flows from the periphery to mainstream. “Internationally, the world tourism code of conduct has been de-

cided in the thirteenth general assembly of the World Tourism Organization setting forth the principles in the development of tourism. The ethical code is a reference for tourism stakeholders,” he said. The codes of ethic, as recognized by Ardika, aimed to minimize the negative impact of tourism on the environment and cultural heritage, to maximize the improvement in sustainable development with poverty eradication and to create harmony among people. Meanwhile, the Head of Bali Government Tourism Office, IB Kade Subhiksu, said that Bali had dozens of tourism village that were ready to receive tourists. However, he did not deny if there was also a means of tourism village that had not yet fulfilled all requirements specified. Pengelipuran Village in Bangli Regency, said Subhiksu, was one of the existing tourism villages that had been long enough to receive the visit of domestic and foreign tourists. “We will continue working to improve the infrastructure and other supporting facilities, so the visit to tourism village will increase,” he said. DENPASAR - Indonesia’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism will not be revising its ambitious 7.7 million target for foreign visitors in 2011 despite predictions from many quarters that Japanese arrivals to Indonesia will be negatively impacted for at least six months following the cataclysmic earthquake and tsunami that devastated northern Japan. Indonesia’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Jero Wacik, told the press just five days after the Japanese natural disaster that he remains optimistic foreign tourist arrivals will remain strong, increasing 10% to 7.7 million in 2011. Said Wacik, “there is no revision because the tourists will come from other places and will continue to grow.” The Minister also reaffirmed his belief that Japanese arrivals will rebound after a pause of 6 months. Wacik said that Japanese produce an average of 400,000 visi-

tors each year for Indonesia. He predicted the recent disaster would only depress Japanese arrivals by 10%. Bali by the Numbers - the regular analysis of arrival numbers published by Balidiscovery.com, shows that Japanese arrivals to Bali declined 22.85% in 2010 totaling 246,465. January 2011 arrival figures from Japan, covering a period before the March 11th disaster, show tourism arrivals from Japan were in still in a continual decline. January arrivals were down 13.14% month-onmonth at 16,748. The Minister also dismissed the possibility that several letter bombs recently found in Jakarta will affect tourism arrivals. Wacik said terrorist bombs were not exclusive to Indonesia. He said that Bali suffered an instant drop in arrivals after the Bali bombings, but he was confident that tourist have now become largely immune to such news.

Rampant poultry from outside Bali in Buleleng Alleged to enter through traditional ports Singaraja (Bali Post)—

Though Buleleng remains to be declared as a region being free from bird flu infections, the people of the Northern Bali still worry. Their fear is reasonable because a good few of outside poultry enters into Buleleng without strict supervision. Allegedly, the consignment of the poultry from outside Bali entered into Buleleng through several traditional ports in the northern coast. Head of Buleleng Agricultural and Animal Husbandry Services, Putu Mertha Jiwa, confirmed on Wednesday (Mar 23) the allegation on entry of a number of poultry from outside Bali through traditional ports. His party claimed to have difficulties in doing surveillance due to limited number of officials and there were many traditional ports in Buleleng. “Indeed, the consignment of poultry from outside Bali was alleged through traditional ports. Sometimes there are ships carrying bananas but they also bring along chicken to Buleleng. To sum up, it is difficult to control them,” he said. According to Mertha Jiwa, to prevent the consignment of poul-

try through traditional ports his party expected the participation of communities living on the coastal area or fishermen living around the ports to oversee the landing ships. If found any ship unloading poultry or other animals, people were asked to report the matter to the officer of Animal Husbandry Services or to the nearest police station. “Since the number of supervising officers is very restricted, we ask the participation of community living on the coastal area to participate in supervising the entry of poultry from outside Bali to Buleleng,” he explained. Mertha Jiwa added, so far his party indeed had commitment to carry out preventive measures against the transmission of bird flu virus in Buleleng. Among others, his party continued to do spraying by disinfectant targeting poultry cages owned by the community. In addition, if there was a positive indication on the transmission of bird flu virus, the Animal Husbandry Services would perform extermination. “We keep on watching and alerting disinfectant to prevent the transmission of H5N1 viruses,” he said. Western air strikes fail to dislodge Gaddafi armor Reuters

TRIPOLI – Western warplanes hit Libya for a fifth night on Thursday, but so far have failed to stop Muammar Gaddafi’s tanks shelling rebel-held towns or dislodge his armor from a strategic junction in the east. Gaddafi’s tanks rolled back into Misrata under the cover of darkness and began shelling the area near the main hospital, residents and rebels said, resuming their attack after their guns were silenced in daylight hours by Western airstrikes. Government snipers in the city, Libya’s third largest, were undeterred by the bombing raids though and had carried on firing indiscriminately throughout, residents said. A rebel spokesman said the snipers had killed 16 people. “Government tanks are closing in on Misrata hospital and shelling the area,” said a doctor in Misrata who was briefly reached by phone before the line was cut off. It was impossible to independently verify the reports. A loud explosion was heard in the Libyan capital Tripoli early on Thursday and smoke could be seen rising from an area where a military base is situated.

Libyan officials took journalists to a Tripoli hospital early on Thursday to see what they said were the charred bodies of 18 military personnel and civilians killed by Western warplanes or missiles overnight. The U.S. military said it had successfully established a no-fly zone over Libya’s coastal areas and had moved on to attack Gaddafi’s tanks. The allies flew 175 sorties in 24 hours, with the U.S. flying 113 of those, a U.S. commander said. Britain said on Thursday it had launched guided Tomahawk missiles from a Trafalgar class submarine at air defense targets as part of the coalition plan to enforce the resolution. French Defense Minister Gerard Longuet said France had destroyed some 10 Libyan armored vehicles over three days. The U.N. Security Council resolution he said, “stipulates that the coalition has all means available to protect the civilians. What’s threatening the population today is the tanks and artillery,” he said in an interview with Le Figaro. The Libyan government denies its army is conducting any offensive operations and says troops are only defending themselves when they come under attack.

The poll of 2,409 people found the public would prefer Charles to be the next king by a 45 to 37 margin, a reversal of a similar survey in 2005 which backed William by 41-37. scrapping the monarchy had ebbed away. Shortly after the death of Charles’s wife Diana in 1997, when there was widespread anger at the royal family, a quarter of Britons wanted to get rid of them. The survey found that figure was down to 13 percent. There was also strong support for an overhaul to a 300-year-old law which gives primacy to male heirs to the British throne. The poll showed that by a 75-17 percent margin, the public thought the eldest child of the monarch, whatever their sex, should succeed.

BELGRADE, Serbia – Small and cuddly or looking like wolves, curled in filthy makeshift cages or roaming the streets in packs: Stray dogs are everywhere in Serbia, a country where even people struggle with hunger and have little sympathy for animals. The numbers are staggering, fueled by years of war, poverty and the lack of any government strategy to neuter or control strays. In the capital Belgrade, strays have doubled in recent years to about 15,000, according to government estimates — a huge burden for a city of only 2 million. In contrast, Moscow has five times more people and about 26,000

stray dogs. “There are more and more dogs out there every day,” says Jelena Jankovic, whose Center for Mixed Dogs group has run a small shelter in Belgrade since 1996. While there are no exact figures for the rest of Serbia, officials estimate there could be around 50,000 dogs out there, many facing hunger, cold, diseases, harassment and sometimes unimaginable cruelties. Officials who had been preoccupied with postwar and global economic issues have been forced to announce urgent measures to try to deal with the problem of strays. “We must attack this from all sides,” said Predrag Petrovic, who heads the newly formed special commission addressing the issue in Belgrade. “We have a difficult task

ahead of us.” “We are all responsible for such an immense number of abandoned animals,” says Budimir Plavsic, senior official at Serbia’s agriculture ministry. The scope of the problem was highlighted by a tragedy earlier this month, when a woman who singlehandedly ran a makeshift dog shelter in northern Serbia died in a fire. She left behind about 500 dogs and 60 cats who are now in the hands of local authorities. At the shelter, 60 miles (100 kilometers) north of Belgrade, hundreds of dogs are fenced off amid debris and mud, chewing at raw meat leftovers provided by food factories. Local officials and animal rights activists said it could take months before the dogs are resettled.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

DENPASAR - Head of the Bali Tourism Agency Ida Bagus Kade Subhiksu said the number of Japanese coming to Bali in the wake of the devastating quake and subsequent deadly tsunami in Japan has lowered considerably. “The drop was apparent from the cancellation of more than 1,000 hotel room reservations,” he said here Wednesday. After attending a seminar and workshop on the development of tourist villages and areas, he said many other hotels besides those in Nusa Dua, Kuta and Sanur, may also cancelled their hotel room reservations of Japanese tourists. He said that despite the highest drop in the number of tourists after Australians, he will continue promoting tourism both by way of the Internet and overseas promotion. “We will continue promoting like attending the world’s biggest tourist exhibition, the International

Tourism Bourse (ITB) in Berlin, and the tourism exhibition and bourse JATA World Travel Fair,” he said. He said the effort is a means of the promotion of Indonesian tourism in Bali particularly, because the number of German and Japanese tourists to the island paradise (Bali) had been increasing. On a different occasion, chairman of Bali’s Association of Tourist Travel (Asita) Al Purwa said he had yet to receive more reports from travel offices on the cancellations. Indonesian Coconut Beef Ingredients * 1 1/2 lb Boneless sirloin steak, -trimmed * 3 tb Corn oil * 1 lg Spanish onion, sliced * 1 Garlic clove, crushed * 1 ts Ground ginger * 1 ts Ground cumin * 1 ts Ground coriander * 1 ts Chili seasoning * 2/3 c Shredded coconut * 2 ts Light-brown sugar * 1 tb Lemon juice * 1 1/4 c Beef stock * Thin slivers red bell pepper * Chopped green chilies * Small onion slices

Directions Cut steak in 1/2" thick strips. Heat oil in a saucepan. Add Spanish onion slices and garlic and fry gently until soft. Add beef and fry, stirring, until brown. Add spices to beef and cook 2 minutes. Add coconut, brown sugar, lemon juice and beef stock; stir well. Simmer gently, uncovered, 30-35 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until mixture is thickened and dry. Stir mixture more frequently towards end of cooking time to prevent sticking. Bernanke argued the DoddFrank reform legislation will address the issue of firms perceived as too big to fail by restricting their activities, raising their capital requirements and enhancing regulators’ ability to wind them down. “A financial system dominated by too-big-to-fail firms cannot be a healthy financial system,” Bernanke told a group of community bankers in a speech that did not touch on the broader eco-

Judge Keith Schwartz never publicly detailed the terms of his offer to Lohan, but said if she pleaded no contest or guilty in the case, he would sentence her to jail. Prosecutors are also seeking jail time for the “Mean Girls” star, who was on probation for a 2007 drunken driving case when a store in Venice told police that Lohan had taken a necklace without permission in January. Lohan’s attorney Shawn Holley notified the prosecutor handling the case that Lohan would not be taking Schwartz’s plea offer, district attorney’s spokeswoman Jane Robison said. Wednesday was the deadline for Lohan to notify Schwartz of her intentions and she will now be required to appear in court on April 22 for a preliminary hearing. The hearing will be conducted by a new judge — the fourth one Lohan has faced in the past year — who will determine whether there is enough evidence for Lohan to stand trial on the felony grand theft charge. If the judge rules Lohan should stand trial, the actress could immediately be sentenced for a probation violation and sent to jail for the fourth time. The actress, 24, has pleaded not guilty to the charge and denied wrongdoing.

LONDON – As former “saviours of rock’n’roll” The Strokes release their fourth album this week, nowhere is the search for rock’s new standard bearers more intense than in Britain. But who is up to the task? The 2001 release of the US band’s debut “Is This It” and the emergence of compatriots The White Stripes sparked a renaissance in guitar music, but with both bands slipping from view it is up to younger bands to fill the void. Theoretically Britain is the place to look, being the country which gave the world The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie and Sex Pistols — but salvation may be far off. One band garnering much recent attention are London quartet The Vaccines, whose tuneful album “What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?” is also released this week. Although a competent debut that is set to chart in the top two, Guardian reviewer Alexis Petridis doubted its generation-defining potential, saying it had been “hyped more than their catchy retro indie deserves”. BUENOS AIRES – Fossils of a recently discovered dinosaur species in Argentina is a “missing link” in the evolution of the long-necked giants that roamed the earth millions of years ago, paleontologists said. Long-neck, long-tail plant-eaters like Diplodocus, Brachiosaurus and Brontomerus — the largest land creatures ever to walk on earth — are dinosaurs known as sauropods. They lived some 170 million years ago. Paleontologists see the recently discovered Leonerasaurus Taquetransis as the connection between the smaller prosauropods — also known as near-sauropods — like Sellosaurus and Plateosaurus from the Triassic period (248-205 million years ago) to their much larger descendants, the sauropods. Leonerasaurus lived some 10 million years before the sauropods and measured a mere three meters (yards) long, said Diego Pol with

the Egidio Feruglio Museum of Paleontology. “The importance of this find is that it is a new species. It gives us information on the origin of the sauropods,” Pol told AFP. Leonerasaurus is “a very primitive species... that helps us understand the evolutionary tree of the giants that appeared later,” Pol said. Later, in 1993, scientists found remains of the Giganotosaurus Carolinii, a T-Rex type creature that is the largest known carnivorous dinosaur ever found. Pol is the co-author of an article announcing the Leonerasaurus discovery that appeared January in the journal Plos One.

MEXICO CITY – The Mexican government argued Wednesday that a Mayan-style statue auctioned for a record $4 million (2.9 million euros) this week is a fake. Auctioneers insisted it is genuine and charged Mexico wants to quash legal sales of preHispanic artifacts. The stakes in the dispute are high — and not just because of the cash laid down by the as-yet unidentified buyer. A debate has been renewed about whether there is a place, if any, for sales of ancient artifacts. The Paris-based Binoche Et Giquello auction house that sold the stucco figure of a shield-toting stucco warrior said the attack on its authenticity is an attempt by Mexican officials to shake confidence in the auction market for pre-Hispanic artifacts. “They want to ruin the market for pre-Hispanic art, that is my opinion,” said auctioneer Alexandre Giquello. Damaging the legal market could push such pieces onto the unregulated black market, he said. Auction houses are subject to public scrutiny, provenance and ownership challenges, while “on the black market, you have no control at all,” Giquello said. He said the statue — 5 feet (1.56 meters) tall and colored in blue, green and orange — has been publicly written about since 1976. The piece has been examined by experts, exhibited and discussed in professional forums

and publications, he said. Titled “seated divinity,” the figure was dated by the auction house to between A.D. 550 and 950. Mexico’s ministry in charge of archaeology disputed that. “It is a recently manufactured piece that does not belong to any of Mexico’s pre-Hispanic cultures,” the National Institute of Anthropology and History said in a statement. The institute’s experts described the fierce-looking warrior as a sort of “freestyle” mishmash of elements that never existed in one single culture, like lace-up sandals of a kind the Mayas didn’t use. The experts also said the knees-bent position of the statue didn’t match Maya styles, though Giquello said the figure had been seated on a throne that was now missing. The Mexican agency acknowledged it judged the statue’s authenticity based solely on photos, a practice that experts say is questionable.

MADRID – Spain striker David Villa is confident that victories in their upcoming games against the Czech Republic and Lithuania will practically guarantee the reigning champions a place in Euro 2012. Having won the previous competition as well as the World Cup last summer in South Africa, Spain are the team to beat in international football with talent in abundance. First under coach Luis Aragones and now Vicente Del Bosque, Spain have adopted the quick passing movement which has brought so much success to Barcelona and with so many of the Catalan club’s players being home grown they have stepped up effortlessly into the national team. They now play the Czech Republic, second in the group with three points less, in Granada on Friday, and then travel to Lithuania next week. LONDON – Welsh hopes of scoring an upset over England in this weekend’s Euro 2012 qualifier have suffered a major blow after the withdrawal of Gareth Bale with a hamstring injury, it was confirmed Thursday. The Tottenham winger has suffered a recurrence of an injury which had been bothering the player before he joined up with the Wales squad ahead of Saturday’s encounter at the Millennium Stadium, a statement said. “Due to a hamstring problem, Gareth Bale has had to withdraw from the Wales squad to face England on Saturday,” the Football Association of Wales said. “He felt tight last week during training with his club. After playing 90 minutes on Saturday he felt some muscle tightness. Initially,

this was expected to be muscle soreness after playing his first game. “On joining-up with the Welsh squad he was kept off his feet in training for two days to recover. As he still felt tight in the warm-up on Tuesday, Gareth was pulled-out of the session. “He did not train at all on Wednesday and was sent for a scan. The scan revealed that Gareth picked-up his injury last week.” Bale had only recently returned to action for Spurs after a six-week lay-off with a back injury before being hit with a hamstring problem. Bale’s absence deprives Wales of one of their main attacking outlets. The flying winger has been in outstanding form for Tottenham this season, most notably in the Champions League where he singlehandedly destroyed Inter Milan in a victory at White Hart Lane.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Dwyane Wade scored 24 points and Chris Bosh added 23 to help the Miami Heat rally for a 100-94 win over the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night. LeBron James had 19 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for Miami, which has won six of seven following a five-game losing streak. The Heat trailed by 11 late in the third quarter before Mike Miller made a 3-pointer in the final seconds. Miami then scored the first 15 points of the fourth to take an 88-81 lead. Detroit had the ball down by four in the final minute, but Greg Monroe missed a layup, forcing the Pistons to foul. Richard Hamilton led Detroit with 27 points. Hamilton made back-to-back 3pointers from the same spot in the left corner late in the third to give the Pistons a 78-70 lead. Mike Bibby appeared to answer with a 3-pointer of his own with the shot clock running out, but the Miami guard’s shot ended up being disallowed between quarters. Detroit led 81-73 after three, but went scoreless until Tracy McGrady made a shot from the top of the key with 6:25 left in the game. In his previous game at Detroit, James made news by taking a heckler to task early in Miami’s win over the Pistons. The focus was on the court this time, and although James wasn’t at his best, the Heat had enough offensive balance to pull through once they started shutting down Detroit early in the final quarter. Bibby made his first start for Miami in his 11th game with the team, scoring five points. The Heat are without guard Mario Chalmers (sprained right knee) and center Zydrunas Ilgauskas (right foot infection). Miller finished with 13 points for Miami. Monroe had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Pistons, while Tayshaun Prince added 13 points and Chris Wilcox scored 10.

TOKYO – Former world number one Kim Clijsters has withdrawn from the Pan Pacific Open to be held in Tokyo in September over the ongoing nuclear emergency at an atomic plant. Clijsters said she hoped to play in Japan “when it’s possible”, after earlier tweeting concerns over radiation from the Fukushima plant which was damaged in the massive March 11 earthquake and tsunami. “I always have felt that I have a close connection to Japan. I have really good memories of playing doubles with Ai Sugiyama in Japan,” the 27-year-old world number two said in a message to organisers. “I wish everybody a lot of courage, a lot of strength and I look forward to coming back to Tokyo when it’s possible.” Three days after the disaster that struck northeast Japan, the Belgian expressed some of her concerns on popular micro-blogging service Twitter. “So sad to see all the suffering that Japanese are going through. First earthquake, tsunami now the radiation problems!” Clijsters wrote on March 14. “Winds from Japan hitting US West coast containing radioactive material...?? On the news this morning! I don’t think I want to be here,” she wrote later that day. LONDON – Japan is still considering a bid to host the 2020 Olympics despite the triple blow caused by the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear radiation crisis, a senior national Olympic committee official said Wednesday. The Japanese Olympic Committee said it was “very surprised” at the recent comments made by Italian IOC member Mario Pescante, who said he was told by Japan’s ambassador in Rome that Japan had decided not to pursue a bid because of the disasters. “The JOC is considering the 2020 bid. We (have) not changed our policy,” Yasuhiro Nakamori, the JOC’s international relations director, said in an e-mail to The Associated Press. Nakamori said the JOC will hold a strategy meeting next Tuesday and make a final decision on whether to bid in July. “We (still) have a lot of things to do to make a decision, even though we have experience, some knowledge and planning through the 2016 bid activities,” he said. Tokyo, which staged the 1964 Olympics, bid unsuccessfully for the 2016 Games, which were awarded to

If we had been beaten by Tokyo, we would still have had reason to celebrate.” Hiroshima and Nagasaki — the two Japanese cities hit by atomic bombs in World War II — have also expressed interest in a joint Olympic bid. Japan has been forced to give up the World Figure Skating Championships, which were scheduled to be held in Tokyo this week. McLaren duo hopeful on chances McLaren duo Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton are optimistic that their revamped McLaren will be much better in Australia than it was in pre-season testing. With the Wokingbased outfit having reverted to a simpler exhaust system for this weekend following troubles with its more radical design in testing, the team is hoping that it can deliver a strong result.

Massa aims for fresh start in 2011 FELIPE Massa says he is aiming to have a “completely different championship” than last year ahead of the start of the season this weekend. “For sure, the goal is to have a completely different championship than 2010 in every direction,” said Massa on Thursday in Australia. “Being at the top and fighting for the top in every qualifying session and race which was not the case last year and I am really confident we can do that.” Massa endured a disappointing 2010, failing to win any races and being overshadowed by Ferrari teammate Fernando Alonso in the standings. But the Bra-

zilian admits he is more optimistic for this year thanks to the Pirelli tyres suiting his style more. “I am much more confident because the tyres works a little bit better in the direction to be a higher temperature and a better grip on the front, which is something I suffered with in qualifying,” he said. “This is something that makes me a lot more confident and I hope as I said, that the q and race will be very different this race. “You could stop three or four times in the race depending on the track. Last year we were stopping once! It is up to us to learn and have a very good strategy because the races will be different to last year.” Massa said he was also positive about Ferrari’s form following a very strong winter of testing. “I don’t remember the winter from last year, but what I can say is that this winter it was positive. Looking that at all the changes in the rules and we were the team that did the most kilometres on the track compared to the other teams. On many days we saw cars running like 60 laps, cars having many problems and we were doing a minimum of 100 laps everyday so I think that’s positive. “Talking about the performance it is very difficult to say because we never on low fuel at the same time and soft tyres at the same time. We didn’t do that so this is something we don’t know but I can say we were one of the strongest over the winter. “So if you put everything together I think we have a good car. But now we are going to be sure how good the car is and how sure Red Bull, Mercedes, McLaren all the other teams and how we compare to them. For sure I expect Red Bull to be strong, but how much, even Red Bull doesn’t know.”

Button is upbeat that the developments will deliver a step forward in form from its disappointing performance in testing. “With the new exhaust system, if everything goes to plan, and with a few other tweaks on the car, we hopefully have made up quite a bit of ground,” he said at Albert Park on Thursday. “Whether it is enough to really challenge the top teams we will have to wait and see, but I like the approach though. I like the aggressive approach of bringing a new exhaust system here, and really fighting for it. “If you just settle into a position and think, ‘we will pick up a few points here and that will be enough’, I think that is the wrong attitude. And it is not good for the guys who have been working hard all winter. The aggressive approach is a good approach.” Hamilton also praised the efforts that McLaren has put in to the car to try and improve its situation for the first race of the season. “We are always faced with difficulties and we are faced with a challenge - but we are looking at it positively,” he said. “What I like to see is that my guys have not given up and said ‘okay, this is all we have and we must deal with it.’ They have made every attempt to improve the car. “We come here and hopefully we won’t be too far behind. I’ve won a race in every season I’ve raced, so we’ve had the ability to pull through whatever circumstances have been and win races. “Maybe we won’t be on the first row this weekend but it doesn’t mean in one, two or three races

we can’t be competing for more wins.” Jenson Button thinks Formula 1 fans are going to be ‘shocked’ by the amount of overtaking in the Australian Grand Prix as drivers struggle to look after their tyres in the closing stages of the race. Amid growing excitement about the impact that Pirelli’s new tyres are going to have on the racing, Button thinks that the stage is set for the final laps in particular to produce real thrills. “I think you will see so much overtaking in the last stint here that it will shock everyone,” explained Button. “It is going to go to the last corner in this race, which is great. I don’t know if all of the races will be like that, but this one will because we don’t understand the tyres yet.” Button believes that the key to victory will be in looking after the tyres in the final stage of the race - when drivers will have to ensure that their tyres stay in good shape until the chequered flag. “For me the last stint is important to look after the tyres - the first two or three not so much because the important thing, as everyone knows, is to stop one lap before everyone else. “If you do that you will overtake them because you will put new tyres on and go three seconds per lap quicker. It will be an interesting one. The main thing is who is going to be brave enough to stop the earliest, because you might think you have made a lot of ground up after the first stop, but you could lose it all again on the last stop or last stint. “It is a balancing act and it is going to take a few races to work out what the best strategy is.”
