This becomes a very strategic discourse for Balinese people to get an ideal leader for Bali. At least, the next leader of Bali must be clean, bold and visionary as well as takes side in the Bali’s interest. Assuredly, such terms are not enough because there are many other indicators to be met. Prof Lasmawan said that Bali’s next leader must be a figure with positive track record in defending the interests of Bali. In this context, Bali’s future leader must be free and clean so that it can take decisive measures in managing bureaucrats. “Requirements of Bali’s leader must be certainly honest and having ethics that reflects Hindu customs and traditions. It is important to be made into requirements considering that comprehension of Bali’s leader for the territory and the people chaired should also be clear,” he said. He also reminded the people of Bali to consider social investment of the candidates. In this case, the interaction of candidates with their constituents and the people of Bali should be clear. “The figures that only appear when struggling for power must be necessarily alerted. Their motive to become a leader must also be questioned,” he said. Lasmawan said that socio-cultural investment of the candidates can become the strength in moving the development of Bali. Sutawa underlined that visionary in the leadership of Bali must be interpreted into real actions to overcome the classic problems of Bali. Congestion, environmental, abrasion, litter and potential of water crisis problem must be analyzed by the leader of Bali. “If people do not have a solution to overcome the problems, they should not be aiming for the position of Bali’s governor,” he said. Besides, the threat of marginalization and erosion of Balinese humans and their culture should also become a strategic requirement. “Candidates that do not support the commitment of Balinese people to maintaining their nature should be

PARIS — In a city hit by chronic pollution and traffic problems, Paris officials are experimenting with a self-driving shuttle linking two train stations in the French capital.
Two electric-power EZ10 minibuses, which can carry up to six seated passengers, were put into service Monday and will be tested until early April between the Lyon and Austerlitz stations in Paris. The GPS-guided vehicle is free and will be running seven days a week. “To respond to the pollution emergency in big urban
zones it is urgent to innovate with new transportation systems that are more environmentally friendly,” said Catherine Baratti-Elbaz, head of the local district where the test is taking place. Jean-Louis Missika, a Paris deputy mayor in charge of innovation, said self-driving vehicles “will change the urban landscape in a spectacular fashion” within the next 20 years. Conceived by the French company Easymile, the EZ10 will also be tested between two main green spaces in southern Paris later this year. The company said fleets of the small shuttle are already operating in several countries across the
world including the United States. “Let’s see how people will adopt them, how they will react in a vehicle without a driving wheel and no driver,” Missika said. With a commercial speed of 15 kph (9 mph), the shuttle has been designed for public transportation to cover short distances. Equipped with a system detecting objects, the EZ10 can adjust its trajectory to avoid obstacles and does not need heavy infrastructure to be operated. On the Charles de Gaulle bridge linking the two train stations, the shuttles are running on separate lanes and don’t mix with other vehicles in traffic. (ap)

Pursuant to the reports of the BNNP Bali, there were 172 people of voluntary addicts following the rehabilitation program and 802 people undergoing prosecution. “They are self-reporting not based on their own accord, but taken by their parents, relatives or friends. So, the addicts having self-report remain low. Strangely, the reporting by family happens because they are overwhelmed by family members who use drugs,” he said. This month, the BNNP arrested eight suspects and the investigation is being processed. On that account, there is an increase when compared to January 2016 with zero arrest. “There has been an action. The phenomenon shows if the BNNP performance increases,” he said. The effort of mapping out the prone areas and drug-untouched areas has been already implemented. MANGUPURA - Heading for a smart city, the government of Badung in the regional budget 2017 is going to realize a command center. Three-tiered control room will be built in the area of Badung civic center with a budget of around IDR 50 billion. Head of the Badung Infocom Agency, Wayan Weda Darmaja, said that physical development of the project will be worked on by relevant agency, in this case the Badung Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency (PUPR). “The entire equipment in the command
room will be prepared by Infocom Agency with a budget of around IDR 23 billion, including the provision of facilities such as computer, monitor, network, operator and others,” said Weda Darmaja on Monday (Jan. 23). According to him, the control center will display all the analysis results of the digital monitoring data of Badung. No less important, the collected data will be used as a basis for decision making. “Tasks of the Infocom Agency are currently heavier because it serves the entire agencies, the community as well as manages public communications, including the
information on the programs of Badung regent that touches people. The entire statistical data in Badung are hosted by our agency,” he explained. A sharecropper, Wayan Sudiarsa, said that a housing complex and tofu factory in the upstream of paddy fields have an impact on the quality of rice and development of paddy plants. Now, the acreage is converted again. “If carried out to non-productive land, it actually does not matter. However, the paddy field here is still productive,” he said. In the meantime, as seen on the project signboard mounted in the paddy field backfilled, it will be plotted. A substantial number of subak members in the subdistrict of Jembrana and Negara who met recently admitted the temptation to agricultural land conversion is very tantalizing. However, some subak areas apply awig-awig (bylaw) on the limitation of paddy field area so as not to be converted like the Subak Mertasari, at Loloan Timur, that has already been besieged by settlement. Subak (irrigation cooperative) hoped there is a policy to terminate the sale of
agricultural land for conversion. Subak does not make it a problem as long as the land sold remains to be functioned for agricultural purposes, not converted into concrete area. In the meantime, a member of Commission B of the Jembrana House of Representatives, Ketut Catur, recently said that farmland in Jembrana is threatened by land conversion so that he hoped this can get a concern. Moreover, in 2015 it was already issued the Regional Bylaw No.5/2015 on the Protection of Agricultural Land for Sustainable Food (PLP2B). This bylaw sets forth the area of agricultural land, so that it just needs to be implemented the guarantee farmers. He hoped the bylaw is not just limited to regulations on paper without implementation. Hopefully, the establishment of sustainable food agricultural land could slow down the rapid land conversion. Likewise, the control of agricultural land is also shored up for the sake of productivity of farmers. Deni explained that she gets bamboo raw materials by purchasing at IDR 40,000 per stalk. And it is also adjusted to the quality of bamboo purchased. “If belonging to super quality, it is more expensive because the bamboo has been well selected,” said Deni. According to Deni, a piece of large-sized sokasi will take her quite long time because the workmanship starting from slicing bamboo to painting is still worked on manually by hand and brush. In the current
rainy season, she has trouble in drying out. If it rains like this, it takes a long time to dry out the paint because there is no sunlight. “If the bamboo is not dry at all, the results will not be good in the finishing process. So it should be absolutely dry before being woven. A sokasi can be completed maximally in three days because the process is quite complicated. A small-sized sokasi can be completed in a day, but a larger one in three days,” she added. She explained that the selling price depends on the size of sokasi. BEIJING - China said on Tuesday it had “irrefutable” sovereignty over disputed islands in the South China Sea after the White House vowed to defend “international territories” in the strategic waterway. White House spokesman Sean Spicer in his comments on Monday signaled a sharp departure from years of cautious U.S. handling of China’s assertive pursuit of territorial claims in Asia. “The U.S. is going to make sure that we protect our interests there,” Spicer said when asked if Trump agreed with comments by his secretary of state nominee, Rex Tillerson. On Jan. 11, Tillerson said China should not be allowed access to islands it has built in the contested South China Sea. “It’s a question of if those islands are in fact in international waters and not part of China proper, then yeah, we’re going to make sure that we defend international territories from being taken over by one country,” he said. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a regular news briefing on Tuesday “the United States is not a party to the South China Sea dispute”. China claims most of the South China Sea, while Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Brunei claims parts of the sea that

BAR ACCESS TO ISLANDS Tillerson’s remarks at his Senate confirmation hearing prompted Chinese state media to say at the time that the United States would need to “wage war” to bar China’s access to the islands, where it has
built military-length air strips and installed weapons systems. Tillerson was asked at the hearing whether he supported a more aggressive posture toward China and said: “We’re going to have to send China a clear signal that, first, the island-building stops and, second, your access to those islands also is not going to be allowed.” The former Exxon Mobil Corp chairman and chief executive did not elaborate on what might be done to deny China access to the islands. But analysts said his comments, like those of Spicer, suggested the possibility of U.S. military action, or even a naval blockade. LONDON - British Prime Minister Theresa May must give parliament a vote before she can formally start Britain’s exit from the European Union, the UK Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday, giving lawmakers who oppose her Brexit plans a chance to amend or hinder them. By a majority of eight to three, the Supreme Court decided May could not use executive powers known as “royal prerogative” to invoke Article 50 of the EU’s Lisbon Treaty and begin two years of divorce talks. “The Supreme Court today rules that the government cannot trigger Article 50 without an act of parliament authorising it to do so,” said Supreme Court President David Neuberger. However, the judges did remove one major potential obstacle, saying May did not need the approval of the UK’s devolved assemblies in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland before triggering Brexit. May has said she intends to invoke Article 50 before the end of March but the ruling means she must bring legislation before parliament before she can go ahead. That opens up the Brexit process to scrutiny from lawmakers, the majority of whom had wanted to stay in the EU. However, the main opposition Labour Party said it would not block Brexit although it would try to amend the legislation. “Labour will seek to build in the principles of full, tariff-free access to the single market and maintenance of workers’ rights and social and environmental protections,” said party leader Jeremy Corbyn. Attorney General Jeremy Wright, the government’s top lawyer who argued its case, said ministers would implement the court’s ruling. “Of course the government is disappointed with the outcome,” Wright said outside the Supreme Court. “The government will comply with the judgment of the court and do all that is necessary to implement it.” May said the decision did nothing to change the path of Brexit. “The British people voted to leave the EU, and the government will deliver on their verdict - triggering Article 50, as planned, by the end of March,” her spokesman said. Last week May set out her stall for negotiations, promising a clean break with the world’s largest trading bloc as part of a 12-point plan to focus on global free trade deals, setting a course for a so-called “hard Brexit”. Some investors and those who backed the “remain” campaign hope that lawmakers, most of whom wanted to stay in the EU, will force May to seek a deal which prioritises access to the European single market of 500 million people, or potentially even block Brexit altogether. Sterling initially rose on the news that the government had lost its appeal, but it then fell over half a cent to hit day’s lows against the dollar and euro after the ruling that the devolved assemblies did not need to give their assent. U.S. President Donald Trump formally withdrew the United States from the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal on Monday, distancing America from its Asian allies as China’s influence in the region rises. Fulfilling a campaign pledge to end American involvement in the 2015 pact, Trump signed an executive order in the Oval Office pulling the United States from the 12-nation TPP. “Great thing for the American worker,” Trump said as he signed the order on his third full day in office. The Republican says the trade deal would have damaged U.S. manufacturing. The accord, backed heavily by U.S. business, was negotiated by former President Barack Obama’s administration but never approved by Congress. It had been the main economic pillar of the Obama administration’s “pivot” to the AsiaPacific region to counter China. Trump has sparked worries in Japan and elsewhere in the Asia-Pacific with his opposition to the TPP and his campaign demands for U.S. allies to pay more for their security. Harry Kazianis, Director of Defense Studies at the Center for the National Interest think tank in Washington, said Trump must now
find an alternative way to reassure allies in Asia. “This could include multiple bilateral trade agreements. Japan, Taiwan and Vietnam should be approached first as they are key to any new Asia strategy that President Trump will enact,” he said. U.S. BUSINESS LEADERS The new president also met with a dozen American manufacturers at the White House on Monday, pledging to slash regulations and cut corporate taxes, but warning them he would take action on trade deals he felt were unfair. Trump, who took office on Friday, has promised to bring manufacturing plants back to the United States - an issue he said helped him win the Nov. 8 election. He has not hesitated to call out by name companies that he thinks should bring
outsourced production back home. He said those businesses that choose to move factories outside the country would pay a price. “We are going to be imposing a very major border tax on the product when it comes in,” Trump said. Trump asked the group of chief executives from companies including Ford, Dell Technologies, Tesla and others to make recommendations in 30 days to stimulate manufacturing, Dow Chemical CEO Andrew Liveris told reporters. Liveris said the CEOs discussed the border tax “quite a bit” with Trump, explaining “the sorts of industry that might be helped or hurt by that.” “Look: I would take the president at his word here. He’s not going to do anything to harm competitiveness. He’s going to actually make us all more competitive,” Liveris said. At a portion of the meeting observed by reporters, Trump provided no details on how the border tax would work. The U.S. dollar fell to a seven-week low against a basket of key world currencies on Monday and global stock markets

going to have your approvals really fast,” Trump said, referring to Mark Fields, CEO of Ford, who sat around the boardroom-style table in the Roosevelt Room. Fields said he was encouraged by the tone of the meeting. “I know I come out with a lot of confidence that the president is very, very serious on making sure that the United States economy is going to be strong and have policies - tax, regulatory or trade - to drive that,” he said. Trump told the executives that companies were welcome to negotiate with governors to move production between states, but Trump was scheduled to hold a meeting later on Monday with labor leaders and U.S. workers, the White House said. Between winning the presidential election in November and taking office, Trump hosted a number of U.S. CEOs in meetings in New York, including business leaders from defense, technology and other sectors. JAKARTA - Indonesia’s fire-prone Riau province declared a state of emergency on Tuesday, the disaster mitigation agency said, after President Joko Widodo urged regional authorities to avoid a repeat of fires that smothered Southeast Asia in smog in 2015. Indonesia faces global pressure to put an end to slash-and-burn land clearances for palm and pulp plantations which send clouds of toxic smoke over the region each year. JAKARTA - Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Army (TNI) General Mulyono expressed hope that the US-made Apache helicopter ordered by the TNI would be displayed at its 72nd anniversary on Oct 5. “I hope on that day the helicopter can be brought in physically and be displayed as part of the armys programs that should be carried out,” Mulyono stated at the Army Headquarters, Central Jakarta, on Monday. The TNI has signed a contract worth US$295.8 million to purchase eight Apache helicopters. The procurement process of the helicopters is still underway. “It is a lengthy process. We are communicating intensively with the manufacturer, so the helicopters can be immediately delivered in the country,” Mulyono noted. Eight units of the Apache AH64E Guardian, ordered from the US manufacturer Boeing, were expected to be delivered gradually between 2016 and 2018. The upgraded specifications of the Boeing Apache AH-64E helicopter include improved digital connectivity, Joint Tactical Information Distribution System, and a more powerful T700-GE-701D machine, with face gear transmission to accommodate more power. Boeing claims that the AH64 Apache is the worlds most advanced multi-role combat helicopter and is used by the US Army and a growing number of international defense forces. Boeing has delivered more than 2,200 Apache helicopters to customers around the world since the aircraft entered production.(ant)

Rescue helicopter crashes near Italy avalanche disaster site
ROME - A rescue helicopter carrying six people has crashed in Italy near the site of the Abruzzo hotel avalanche disaster, Italian media reports. Reports say it came down near the Campo Felice ski station. It had been sent to rescue an injured skier from pistes close to the epicentres of the recent earthquakes and last week’s deadly avalanche. It is not thought the helicopter was linked to the ongoing rescue operation at the Rigopiano hotel. Six more bodies have been found in the ruins of the hotel, which was engulfed in snow and ice.The known death toll now stands at 14 and rescuers say hopes are fading of finding alive any of the other 15 people still missing. Rescue crews’ spirits were raised on Monday when three of the Hotel Rigopiano’s resident puppies were found alive. But they were found in a boiler room a long way from where the missing are thought to be. The latest bodies to be discovered were found in the snow-covered bar and kitchen area after excavators were used to dig a pathway through the ice and
rubble. Firefighter spokesman Alberto Maiolo said: “Logically, hopes fade as time passes, but we are continuing to search and trying to do it as quickly as possible.” Rescuers who have been working around the clock have not completely ruled out finding more survivors. They believe some rooms they are trying to reach by tunnelling through thick stone walls may be almost intact, so people could still be alive if they have managed to stay warm. Nine people, including four children, were found alive on Friday. They were dug out of the snow and ice two days after the avalanche engulfed the remote hotel. Prosecutors have opened a preliminary manslaughter investigation into the disaster. They are looking into whether environmental risks were properly taken into account during the building and subsequent renovation of the hotel. The four-star hotel and spa facility, where George Clooney once stayed, was built into a hillside high on the eastern slopes of Monte Gran Sasso. BAGHDAD - Iraqi officials said on Monday government forces had taken complete control of eastern Mosul, 100 days after the start of their U.S.-backed campaign to dislodge Islamic State militants from the city. The deputy parliament speaker announced the capture of the east of the city, Islamic State’s last major stronghold in Iraq, after a meeting with Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi. “We completed the total liberation of the left bank of Mosul and this is a gift to the Iraqi people,” said Sheikh Humam Hamoudi in a statement, quoting Abadi at the meeting. The army on Sunday entered Rashidiya, the last district under the control of the militants on the east bank of the Tigris, said military spokesman Brigadier-General Yahya Rasool. LONDON - Bernie Ecclestone’s ousting as Formula One supremo will take the sport in a different, digital direction under new American owners Liberty Media but there is much work to be done in the months and years ahead. “F1 has huge potential with multiple untapped opportunities,” said new chief executive Chase Carey after ending 86-year-old Ecclestone’s 40-year reign on Monday. “We will work...to enhance the racing experience and add new dimensions to the sport and we look forward to sharing these plans over time.” Carey, appointed Formula One chairman in September after serving as vice-chairman of Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox, and Liberty Media’s chief executive Greg Maffei have both said there is a lot they want to do differently. Maffei has spoken of more races in Latin America, Asia and the United States while Carey has indicated that Liberty wants to safeguard the sport’s historic venues in Europe, ramp up marketing efforts and engage the fans more. West Ham United striker Andy Carroll is poised to enter the best stretch of his career if he can stay fit, according to manager Slaven Bilic. Carroll’s career has been plagued by injury problems and the 28-year-old missed more than four months of the current season, from mid-August to December, with West Ham winning just three of 12 league games in that period. LONDON - Bernie Ecclestone’s ousting as Formula One supremo will take the sport in a different, digital direction under new American owners Liberty Media but there is much work to be done in the months and years ahead. “F1 has huge potential with multiple untapped opportunities,” said new chief executive Chase Carey after ending 86-year-old Ecclestone’s 40-year reign on Monday. “We will work...to enhance the racing experience and add new dimensions to the sport and we look forward to sharing these plans over time.” Carey, appointed Formula One chairman in September after serving as vice-chairman of Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox, and Liberty Media’s chief executive Greg Maffei have both said there is a lot they want to do differently. Maffei has spoken of more races in Latin America, Asia and the United States while Carey has indicated that Liberty wants to safeguard the sport’s historic venues in Europe, ramp up marketing efforts and engage the fans more. There has been talk of treating every race like a Super Bowl, creating a buzz that extends far beyond the racetrack, but without ‘Americanising’ the sport’s fundamentals or alienating the purists. Liberty Media has plenty of experience and resources, with interests in the Atlanta Braves baseball team, satellite radio service Sirius XM, entertainment group Live Nation and minority interests in Time Warner and Viacom. Where Ecclestone’s business model was based on television rights and ever-increasing hosting fees that have left circuits with little chance of making a profit, Liberty have emphasised a shift towards sustainability and new revenue streams. “Less than one percent of revenues are from digital,” Maffei said in September after Liberty agreed to acquire the commercial rights from CVC Capital Parthers. “They really have no organised digital effort. I think there’s a lot of things that can be done around gaming, VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality). “There’s an enormous amount of video feed and data about the races that we are already capturing that we are not in any way processing incrementally for the dedicated fan,” he added. Where Ecclestone was often at odds with the teams, adopting a divide and rule approach, Carey has sounded more collegiate and inclusive with talk of cost controls and ensuring a fairer share of the spoils. That will be easier said than done, with the likes of glamour team Ferrari in particular handsomely rewarded for historic performances while smaller teams struggle to survive. Rescue helicopter crashes near Italy avalanche disaster site
ROME - A rescue helicopter carrying six people has crashed in Italy near the site of the Abruzzo hotel avalanche disaster, Italian media reports. Reports say it came down near the Campo Felice ski station. It had been sent to rescue an injured skier from pistes close to the epicentres of the recent earthquakes and last week’s deadly avalanche. It is not thought the helicopter was linked to the ongoing rescue operation at the Rigopiano hotel. Six more bodies have been found in the ruins of the hotel, which was engulfed in snow and ice.The known death toll now stands at 14 and rescuers say hopes are fading of finding alive any of the other 15 people still missing. Rescue crews’ spirits were raised on Monday when three of the Hotel Rigopiano’s resident puppies were found alive. But they were found in a boiler room a long way from where the missing are thought to be. The latest bodies to be discovered were found in the snow-covered bar and kitchen area after excavators were used to dig a pathway through the ice and
rubble. Firefighter spokesman Alberto Maiolo said: “Logically, hopes fade as time passes, but we are continuing to search and trying to do it as quickly as possible.” Rescuers who have been working around the clock have not completely ruled out finding more survivors. They believe some rooms they are trying to reach by tunnelling through thick stone walls may be almost intact, so people could still be alive if they have managed to stay warm. Nine people, including four children, were found alive on Friday. They were dug out of the snow and ice two days after the avalanche engulfed the remote hotel. Prosecutors have opened a preliminary manslaughter investigation into the disaster. They are looking into whether environmental risks were properly taken into account during the building and subsequent renovation of the hotel. The four-star hotel and spa facility, where George Clooney once stayed, was built into a hillside high on the eastern slopes of Monte Gran Sasso. BAGHDAD - Iraqi officials said on Monday government forces had taken complete control of eastern Mosul, 100 days after the start of their U.S.-backed campaign to dislodge Islamic State militants from the city. The deputy parliament speaker announced the capture of the east of the city, Islamic State’s last major stronghold in Iraq, after a meeting with Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi. “We completed the total liberation of the left bank of Mosul and this is a gift to the Iraqi people,” said Sheikh Humam Hamoudi in a statement, quoting Abadi at the meeting. The army on Sunday entered Rashidiya, the last district under the control of the militants on the east bank of the Tigris, said military spokesman Brigadier-General Yahya Rasool. Mopping-up operations were still under way on Monday to flush
out remaining militants in a pocket in this northeastern district, he said in a statement. A resident of Rashidiya said the army had stormed the area after air strikes destroyed a tank and car bomb the militants had been preparing to attack the advancing forces. Trump pulls U.S. out of Pacific trade deal, loosening Asia ties
U.S. President Donald Trump formally withdrew the United States from the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal on Monday, distancing America from its Asian allies as China’s influence in the region rises. Fulfilling a campaign pledge to end American involvement in the 2015 pact, Trump signed an executive order in the Oval Office pulling the United States from the 12-nation TPP. “Great thing for the American worker,” Trump said as he signed the order on his third full day in office. The Republican says the trade deal would have damaged U.S. manufacturing. The accord, backed heavily by U.S. business, was negotiated by former President Barack Obama’s administration but never approved by Congress. It had been the main economic pillar of the Obama administration’s “pivot” to the AsiaPacific region to counter China. Trump has sparked worries in Japan and elsewhere in the Asia-Pacific with his opposition to the TPP and his campaign demands for U.S. allies to pay more for their security. Harry Kazianis, Director of Defense Studies at the Center for the National Interest think tank in Washington, said Trump must now
find an alternative way to reassure allies in Asia. “This could include multiple bilateral trade agreements. Japan, Taiwan and Vietnam should be approached first as they are key to any new Asia strategy that President Trump will enact,” he said. U.S. BUSINESS LEADERS The new president also met with a dozen American manufacturers at the White House on Monday, pledging to slash regulations and cut corporate taxes, but warning them he would take action on trade deals he felt were unfair. Trump, who took office on Friday, has promised to bring manufacturing plants back to the United States - an issue he said helped him win the Nov. 8 election. He has not hesitated to call out by name companies that he thinks should bring
outsourced production back home. He said those businesses that choose to move factories outside the country would pay a price. “We are going to be imposing a very major border tax on the product when it comes in,” Trump said. Trump asked the group of chief executives from companies including Ford, Dell Technologies, Tesla and others to make recommendations in 30 days to stimulate manufacturing, Dow Chemical CEO Andrew Liveris told reporters. Liveris said the CEOs discussed the border tax “quite a bit” with Trump, explaining “the sorts of industry that might be helped or hurt by that.” “Look: I would take the president at his word here. He’s not going to do anything to harm competitiveness. He’s going to actually make us all more competitive,” Liveris said. At a portion of the meeting observed by reporters, Trump provided no details on how the border tax would work. The U.S. dollar fell to a seven-week low against a basket of key world currencies on Monday and global stock markets
declined amid investor concerns about Trump’s protectionist rhetoric. “A company that wants to fire all of its people in the United States, and build some factory someplace else, and then thinks that that product is going to just flow across the border into the United States - that’s not going to happen,” he said. CUT TAXES AND REGULATIONS The president told the CEOs he would like to cut corporate taxes to the 15 percent to 20 percent range, down from current statutory levels of 35 percent - a pledge that will require cooperation from the Republican-led U.S. Congress. But he said business leaders have told him that reducing regulations is even more important. “We think we can cut regulations by 75 percent. Maybe more,” Trump told business leaders. “When you want to expand your plant, or when Mark wants to come in and build a big massive plant, or when Dell wants to come in and do something monstrous and special – you’re
going to have your approvals really fast,” Trump said, referring to Mark Fields, CEO of Ford, who sat around the boardroom-style table in the Roosevelt Room. Fields said he was encouraged by the tone of the meeting. “I know I come out with a lot of confidence that the president is very, very serious on making sure that the United States economy is going to be strong and have policies - tax, regulatory or trade - to drive that,” he said. Trump told the executives that companies were welcome to negotiate with governors to move production between states, but Trump was scheduled to hold a meeting later on Monday with labor leaders and U.S. workers, the White House said. Between winning the presidential election in November and taking office, Trump hosted a number of U.S. CEOs in meetings in New York, including business leaders from defense, technology and other sectors. He also met with leaders of several labor unions, including the AFL-CIO.

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s fire-prone Riau province declared a state of emergency on Tuesday, the disaster mitigation agency said, after President Joko Widodo urged regional authorities to avoid a repeat of fires that smothered Southeast Asia in smog in 2015. Indonesia faces global pressure to put an end to slash-and-burn land clearances for palm and pulp plantations which send clouds of toxic smoke over the region each year. JAKARTA - Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Army (TNI) General Mulyono expressed hope that the US-made Apache helicopter ordered by the TNI would be displayed at its 72nd anniversary on Oct 5. “I hope on that day the helicopter can be brought in physically and be displayed as part of the armys programs that should be carried out,” Mulyono stated at the Army Headquarters, Central Jakarta, on Monday. The TNI has signed a contract worth US$295.8 million to purchase eight Apache helicopters. The procurement process of the helicopters is still underway. “It is a lengthy process. We are communicating intensively with the manufacturer, so the helicopters can be immediately delivered in the country,” Mulyono noted. Eight units of the Apache AH64E Guardian, ordered from the US manufacturer Boeing, were expected to be delivered gradually between 2016 and 2018. The upgraded specifications of the Boeing Apache AH-64E helicopter include improved digital connectivity, Joint Tactical Information Distribution System, and a more powerful T700-GE-701D machine, with face gear transmission to accommodate more power. Boeing claims that the AH64 Apache is the worlds most advanced multi-role combat helicopter and is used by the US Army and a growing number of international defense forces. Boeing has delivered more than 2,200 Apache helicopters to customers around the world since the aircraft entered production.(ant)

It was reported that the local authority of North Darfur arrested Indonesian police belonging to the hybrid peacekeeping mission in Darfur for smuggling arms through El-Fasher airport on Friday (Jan 20) local time. The information from Sudanese Media Center stated that the weapons and am-
munition seized were concealed in dust and stones. The customs unit seized several weapons such as 29 Kalashnikovs, four guns, six GM3 guns and 61 pistols. However, there is yet any confirmation on the involvement of Indonesian police in the arms smuggling attempt, Nasir stated. “According to the initial report we re-
ceived from the Indonesian police personnel, the smuggled stuff does not belong to the Indonesian Police troops,” Nasir added. A sharecropper, Wayan Sudiarsa, said that a housing complex and tofu factory in the upstream of paddy fields have an impact on the quality of rice and development of paddy plants. Now, the acreage is converted again. “If carried out to non-productive land, it actually does not matter. However, the paddy field here is still productive,” he said. In the meantime, as seen on the project signboard mounted in the paddy field backfilled, it will be plotted. A substantial number of subak members in the subdistrict of Jembrana and Negara who met recently admitted the temptation to agricultural land conversion is very tantalizing. However, some subak areas apply awig-awig (bylaw) on the limitation of paddy field area so as not to be converted like the Subak Mertasari, at Loloan Timur, that has already been besieged by settlement. Subak (irrigation cooperative) hoped there is a policy to terminate the sale of
agricultural land for conversion. Subak does not make it a problem as long as the land sold remains to be functioned for agricultural purposes, not converted into concrete area. In the meantime, a member of Commission B of the Jembrana House of Representatives, Ketut Catur, recently said that farmland in Jembrana is threatened by land conversion so that he hoped this can get a concern. Moreover, in 2015 it was already issued the Regional Bylaw No.5/2015 on the Protection of Agricultural Land for Sustainable Food (PLP2B). This bylaw sets forth the area of agricultural land, so that it just needs to be implemented the guarantee farmers. He hoped the bylaw is not just limited to regulations on paper without implementation. Hopefully, the establishment of sustainable food agricultural land could slow down the rapid land conversion. Likewise, the control of agricultural land is also shored up for the sake of productivity of farmers. Though currently the region has been self-sufficient in rice, they are hoped not to be complacency. Optimization of agricultural land also needs to

Deni explained that she gets bamboo raw materials by purchasing at IDR 40,000 per stalk. And it is also adjusted to the quality of bamboo purchased. “If belonging to super quality, it is more expensive because the bamboo has been well selected,” said Deni. According to Deni, a piece of large-sized sokasi will take her quite long time because the workmanship starting from slicing bamboo to painting is still worked on manually by hand and brush. In the current
rainy season, she has trouble in drying out. If it rains like this, it takes a long time to dry out the paint because there is no sunlight. “If the bamboo is not dry at all, the results will not be good in the finishing process. So it should be absolutely dry before being woven. A sokasi can be completed maximally in three days because the process is quite complicated. A small-sized sokasi can be completed in a day, but a larger one in three days,” she added. She explained that the selling price depends on the size of sokasi. BEIJING - China said on Tuesday it had “irrefutable” sovereignty over disputed islands in the South China Sea after the White House vowed to defend “international territories” in the strategic waterway. White House spokesman Sean Spicer in his comments on Monday signaled a sharp departure from years of cautious U.S. handling of China’s assertive pursuit of territorial claims in Asia. “The U.S. is going to make sure that we protect our interests there,” Spicer said when asked if Trump agreed with comments by his secretary of state nominee, Rex Tillerson. On Jan. 11, Tillerson said China should not be allowed access to islands it has built in the contested South China Sea. “It’s a question of if those islands are in fact in international waters and not part of China proper, then yeah, we’re going to make sure that we defend international territories from being taken over by one country,” he said. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a regular news briefing on Tuesday “the United States is not a party to the South China Sea dispute”. LONDON - British Prime Minister Theresa May must give parliament a vote before she can formally start Britain’s exit from the European Union, the UK Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday, giving lawmakers who oppose her Brexit plans a chance to amend or hinder them. By a majority of eight to three, the Supreme Court decided May could not use executive powers known as “royal prerogative” to invoke Article 50 of the EU’s Lisbon Treaty and begin two years of divorce talks. “The Supreme Court today rules that the government cannot trigger Article 50 without an act of parliament authorising it to do so,” said Supreme Court President David Neuberger. However, the judges did remove one major potential obstacle, saying May did not need the approval of the UK’s devolved assemblies in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland before triggering Brexit. May has said she intends to invoke Article 50 before the end of March but the ruling means she must bring legislation before parliament before she can go ahead. That opens up the Brexit process to scrutiny from lawmakers, the majority of whom had wanted to stay in the EU. However, the main opposition Labour Party said it would not block Brexit although it would try to amend the legislation. “Labour will seek to build in the principles of full, tariff-free access to the single market and maintenance of workers’ rights and social and environmental protections,” said party leader Jeremy Corbyn. PARIS — In a city hit by chronic pollution and traffic problems, Paris officials are experimenting with a self-driving shuttle linking two train stations in the French capital.
Two electric-power EZ10 minibuses, which can carry up to six seated passengers, were put into service Monday and will be tested until early April between the Lyon and Austerlitz stations in Paris. The GPS-guided vehicle is free and will be running seven days a week. “To respond to the pollution emergency in big urban
zones it is urgent to innovate with new transportation systems that are more environmentally friendly,” said Catherine Baratti-Elbaz, head of the local district where the test is taking place. Jean-Louis Missika, a Paris deputy mayor in charge of innovation, said self-driving vehicles “will change the urban landscape in a spectacular fashion” within the next 20 years. Conceived by the French company Easymile, the EZ10 will also be tested between two main green spaces in southern Paris later this year. The company said fleets of the small shuttle are already operating in several countries across the
world including the United States. “Let’s see how people will adopt them, how they will react in a vehicle without a driving wheel and no driver,” Missika said. With a commercial speed of 15 kph (9 mph), the shuttle has been designed for public transportation to cover short distances. Equipped with a system detecting objects, the EZ10 can adjust its trajectory to avoid obstacles and does not need heavy infrastructure to be operated. Pursuant to the reports of the BNNP Bali, there were 172 people of voluntary addicts following the rehabilitation program and 802 people undergoing prosecution. “They are self-reporting not based on their own accord, but taken by their parents, relatives or friends. So, the addicts having self-report remain low. Strangely, the reporting by family happens because they are overwhelmed by family members who use drugs,” he said. This month, the BNNP arrested eight suspects and the investigation is being processed. On that account, there is an increase when compared to January 2016 with zero arrest. “There has been an action. The phenomenon shows if the BNNP performance increases,” he said. The effort of mapping out the prone areas and drug-untouched areas has been already implemented. MANGUPURA - Heading for a smart city, the government of Badung in the regional budget 2017 is going to realize a command center. Three-tiered control room will be built in the area of Badung civic center with a budget of around IDR 50 billion. Besides, the threat of marginalization and erosion of Balinese humans and their culture should also become a strategic requirement. “Candidates that do not support the commitment of Balinese people to maintaining their nature should be

HAMBURG - A bird flu outbreak in north Germany this week was of a new subtype called H5N5, the first time the strain has been confirmed on a German farm, the country’s national animal disease centre said on Tuesday.
