NEW YORK — In a life that has been notable for its many metamorphoses — screen starlet, Goth vixen, United Nations ambassador, mother of six, breast cancer awareness advocate — Angelina Jolie’s latest incarnation is as filmmaker. Rarely has an actor, particularly of Jolie’s stature, so fully given over to the other side of the camera. On Thursday, she’ll release her second directorial effort, the inspirational World War II survival tale “Unbroken,” which follows her Bosnian War drama “In the Land of Blood and Honey.” She has already shot her next movie (an intimate marriage drama in which she also co-stars with her husband, Brad Pitt), and made plans for her fourth film, “Africa,” about elephant poaching. Meanwhile, she’s virtually disappeared from the screen, starring in only one live-action film (“Maleficent”) in the last four years. The transformation is complete, even if the new title gives her some hesitation. “I’m shy to call myself a director still. When someone says,

‘What do you do for a living?’ I don’t know if I’ve earned that,” Jolie said in a pair of recent interviews, one in a Manhattan hotel, the other by phone. “I do love directing. I much prefer it to acting.” It’s admittedly unlikely that Jolie is beset by queries about her occupation (“And this Mr. Pitt, is he in show business as well?”). But if there were any doubt, the scope of “Unbroken” — a classical epic that spans war and sea, a prestige picture with major below-the-line talent, a Christmas Day release amid awards season — certainly makes clear Jolie’s ambition. “If you would have said to me a few years ago, ‘What kind of film are you looking for?’ I would have never said a film with shark attacks and bombing raids and the Olympics,” says Jolie.

“I would have picked something very intimate and character driven. But I fell in love with this story.” The story is of Louis Zamperini, who before enlisting in the Air Force to fight in World War II was a track star who ran in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. During the war, his B-24 bomber crashed in the Pacific. He and two crewmates survived on a raft at sea for 47 days, only to be captured by the Japanese and put into a brutal prisoner-of-war camp. Zamperini’s incredible life was chronicled in a 2010 bestseller by Laura Hillenbrand, though his tale had been kicking around in Hollywood since 1956, when Universal Pictures bought the rights to Zamperini’s memoir with plans for Tony Curtis to star in the film. Jackie Chan’s son hit with China drug charge BEIJING - The son of kung fu star Jackie Chan has been charged with providing a venue for others to use drugs, the state Xinhua news agency reported Monday, citing prosecutors. Jaycee Chan, who like his father has worked as an actor and singer, was detained in August after police said they found 100 grams of marijuana in his Beijing home. Prosecutors will now bring the evidence against Chan to a court, which can still decide whether or not to accept the case. Prosecutors had no information on the latest development on their website late Monday. The younger Chan and Ko Chen-tung, a Taiwanese actor also known as Kai Ko, both tested positive for marijuana, according to Xinhua. Chan has featured in several films but has not so far won the acclaim earned by his father, one of Asia’s best-known actors with a string of Hollywood hits to his name. Shortly after his son’s detention, Chan’s father said in a post on China’s Twitter-like Sina Weibo service that he is “extremely angry and extremely shocked”. “As a public figure, I am ashamed. As a father I feel terrible,” he said in August.

Justin Lin to direct third ‘Star Trek’ film

LOS ANGELES — The USS Enterprise is about to get a little faster. “Fast & Furious” director Justin Lin is taking the helm of the third installment in Paramount’s rebooted “Star Trek” franchise. Lin’s rep confirmed the news Monday. Lin is no stranger to franchises. He directed several of Universal’s “Fast & Furious”

films, including the massively successful “Fast & Furious 6,” which made more than $788 million worldwide. J.J. Abrams directed the first two films in the rebooted “Star Trek” series. Roberto Orci was the co-writer on those first two films. He was slated to step into the director’s chair after Abrams left to work on “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” but he exited that role in early December. Over 3.4 million foreign tourists visit Bali

DENPASAR - Foreign tourist arrivals in Indonesia’s tourist resort province of Bali this year can exceed 3.5 million as 3.4 million arrivals have already been recorded for the January-November 2014 period, noted a tourism observer. “Bali still remains the main foreign tourists’ destination in Indonesia,” tourism observer Tjok Gede Agung noted. He remarked that foreign tourists preferred Bali as their destination, which is evident by the number of international travelers arriving at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport. He emphasized that Bali’s target to attract 3.5 million foreign tourists in 2015 was easily achievable as the target was too small, taking into consideration the current up-

ward trend. The tourism observer said that Badung, Bali’s most visited district by foreign tourists, has even set up a Tourism Promotion Board (BPPD). The district will undeniably implement aggressive strategies to lure more foreign tourists. “I think the target of 3.5 million arrivals is too low,” he said. He forecast that in the last month of 2014, the number of foreign tourists will further increase by 300 thousand, thereby reaching a total of 3.7 million annual foreign

visitors. Agung noted that Bali will still attract about 3.5 million foreign tourists in 2015 even without promotional campaigns. He affirmed that most of the tourists arriving in Bali this year were Australians reaching 893,873 visitors or 26.15 percent, followed by Chinese with 539,252 tourists, and Malaysians with 197,052 visitors. The Bali provincial administration had earlier hoped of seeing an increase of 500 thousand in the

number of foreign tourists visiting the island in 2015. “At least, we hope to chalk up an increase of 500 thousand to around 4 million in 2015,” head of the regional tourism office Anak Agung Gede Yuniarta Putra remarked on Thursday. This year, the number of foreign visitors to Bali is forecast to reach 3.5 million, Yuniarta remarked. He revealed that his office will launch promotional campaigns to ensure that the target will be reached. He forecast that an increase is expected in the number of visitors from the five countries of Australia, Japan, China, South Korea, and

Russia, whose citizens are offered visa-free facility.

The number of Indian tourists visiting Bali reached 78,023 during January-November 2014, or an increase of 36.72 percent from 57,068 recorded during the same period in 2013. The increase was the largest reported over the past five years, Made Sudana, an observer and businessman of the tourism industry, stated on Tuesday. Both Indians and Balinese are mostly Hindus, and their cultures are similar, he affirmed. Increasing number of Balinese also visited India, particularly to see the Gangga River, he added. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Gangnam becomes hot spot for Korean startups

SEOUL — The uber-trendy Seoul neighborhood made famous by the “Gangnam Style” K-pop hit is known for status-conscious people, plastic surgery clinics and Ivy League prep schools. Now it’s making a name as a bustling center for tech startups. Many young South Koreans, some educated overseas, are going to Gangnam to start mobile or Internet businesses. Venture capitalists from Silicon Valley and Japan are opening offices in the area to find promising Korean services or apps to bet their money on. Hardly a day passes in Gangnam without a meeting or event related to startup businesses. As one of the most wired places on earth, Seoul has been a crucible for several startup scenes. The government is even aiming to make a town south of Seoul a Korean Silicon Val-

ley. But it is in the 40 square kilometers of land south of the Han river where the growth of Internet and mobile startups has been most evident and the related culture most vivid. Despite its reputation as a beacon for the shallow and status-obsessed, Gangnam has a special significance in South Korea as the place where a globalized youth culture emerged from a generation that had opportunities to travel and study abroad. The present day Gangnam is still seen as the place that brings foreign culture and ideas to the rest of the country.

“Gangnam has the best of the New York city and Silicon Valley,” said Steven Baek, a marketing director at FuturePlay, an incubator for startups. Silicon Valley is “tech-centric, with a lot of nerdy and geeky people but it doesn’t have much diversity,” he said. “Gangnam’s benefit is diversity. New York has lots of fun clubs and rich consumer-based culture like Gangnam but it doesn’t have many engineers.” Another common reason for startups going to Gangnam is that everyone else is there, which makes networking effortless.

Near Gangnam’s Teheran-ro boulevard, many Gangnam startups, venture capitalists and startup incubators have opened offices in the past year, with more arriving in coming months. All three major media companies dedicated to covering startup stories are there too. Around 2000, South Korea’s first wave of Internet companies dotted this 4-kilometer-long street. After the dot.com bubble burst, most of the big Internet portals and online game firms that survived moved to the south of Seoul, but left a legacy. Engineers and developers live near or in Gangnam and older entrepreneurs from the dot. com era became angel investors and startup mentors such as FuturePlay’s CEO Ryu Jung-hee.

Recent openings of two spaces for startups accelerated the startup boom and revived the Internet scene on Teheran-ro. D.Camp opened in 2013 and Maru180 earlier this year a few blocks from Teheran-ro to rent cheap spaces to startup companies and investors. These Silicon Valley-style communal work spaces regularly host meet-ups. Maru even has showers and bunk beds. The spaces are designed to enable serendipitous, accidental meetings in communal areas. Next year, Google is opening its first campus in Asia in Gangnam, giving mentorship and offering spaces for entrepreneurs to hang out. AMLAPURA - Having searched some bars, cafés and shops in the area of Candidasa tourist attraction, Karangasem, police officers of Karangasem Police Headquarters could finally secure 12 bottles of alcoholic beverage of high level, where 11 of them were imported products. They were sold without Liquor Trade Permit (SIUP-MB). Dozens of those liquors were taken from Café Tample at Candidasa and then they were secured to Karangasem Police Headquarters. Around 1:30 p.m., Karangasem Subdistrict Police officers carried out a check to a number of entertainment venues at Candidasa tourist attraction by targeting about ten locations, Monday (Dec 22). From a number of locations, the Café Tample was found selling imported liquor. During the investigation, the café owner, I Gusti Ayu Nyoman Sukendri, 49, from Tengah hamlet, Nyuh Tebel village, Manggis, could not present the license to sell liquor. Furthermore, police officers secured some of the liquors on sale, where nine bottles of liquor had brand name Hatten Wine, a bottle of Mansion House, a bottle of Red Label and a bottle of Balinese arrack Cap Pura. “When checked, the owner could not present the liquor trade permit. After that, we charged her with misdemeanor for violating Article 3 (1) of the Bali Regional Bylaw (Perda) No.5/2012 on the control against the circulation of alcoholic beverages,” said Chief of Karangasem Subdistrict Police, I.B. BUSINESS MOSCOW — Russia has bailed out a mid-sized bank for about $500 million to save it from bankruptcy— a clear sign that the slide in the value of the ruble in the wake of falling oil prices is straining the banking system.

The Central Bank said Monday that it will provide a 30-billion ruble loan to help the Trust Bank to continue operating as normal. It will also place Trust Bank under its own supervision until it finds an investor. Major Russian banks said they had no interest in acquiring Trust, a top 30 Russian bank with about $5 billion in assets. The problems afflicting Trust Bank follow a tumultuous period for the ruble, which this year has shared the title of the world’s worst performing currency with the Ukrainian hryvnia. President Vladimir Putin acknowledged Monday that the Russian economy is facing “uneasy times,” but vowed that the country has enough resources to overcome the problems. Earlier, a respected former Russian finance minister warned that the country is headed for “a full-blown economic crisis.” The ruble has lost about half of its value this year, pushed down by slumping oil prices and Western sanctions over Moscow’s course on Ukraine. Last week, its descent gathered pace, sparking a consumer rush that saw worried Russians flocked to shops to buy cars and durable goods before prices rose further. Still, deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov said Monday he expects the ruble to rally following some signs of stability over the past few trading sessions. He also sought to soothe the market fears by saying the government is not planning to introduce currency controls on Rus-

Alexei Kudrin, a well-respected former Russian finance minister, said oil prices weren’t the main reason why the ruble has suffered this year. In comments to reporters, he said low oil prices account for as little as a quarter of the ruble decline whereas the sanctions imposed on the country could be contributing up to 40 percent of the collapse. Kudrin warned that Russia will enter recession even if oil prices are as high as $80. “We are entering or have already entered a full-blown economic crisis, and we’re going to feel it to the full next year,” Kudrin said. For the first time since 2000, according to Kudrin, disposable income in Russia is going to drop significantly, by about 4 percent. Putin has overseen an oil-driven economic growth boosted by high oil prices and the expanding consumer market, but the collapse of the ruble and a surge in inflation could quickly erode the foundation of his 15-year rule. He retains strong public support at the moment amid the patriotic fervor fueled by Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula. Putin voiced hope that oil prices will rebound soon, but added that the country needs to concentrate its resources to meet the current challenge. SUKABUMI - The government’s decision to ban official meetings at hotels will help to save trillions of rupiah, stated Minister for the Empowerment of State Apparatuses and Administrative Reforms Yuddy Chrisnandi. “In the past two months, the ministry that I lead has saved billions of rupiah, following the issuance of the ban. If all ministries and offices at provincial and district levels would not easily decide to hold meetings at hotels, trillions would be saved,” he informed on Tuesday. Yuddy admitted that several tourism businessmen, especially hotel operators, have raised objections to the policy, but he pointed out that most importantly, the decision did not negatively impact the nation. Even with regard to the policy, he said the funds used to hold meetings could be diverted to other more important projects.

Yuddy explained that the funds allocated for the meeting could be used for several other purposes such as building schools, providing subsidy for the poor, development of health facilities and roads, among others. So, if the ban is implemented for the next five years, a significant amount of funds could be saved, and it would certainly benefit the state, he noted. “Every service, government office, and ministry has been provided with a meeting room that can accommodate hundreds of people. So, it would be regrettable if the facility is not utilized and only becomes a

symbol. I appeal to all state apparatuses to only use the budget for important purposes,” Yuddy emphasized. He stated that the funds derived from the meeting and official travel budget savings could be used for improving educational and health services or providing new employment opportunities. Yuddy said he believed that hotel owners had ways to cover their losses. “What is important now is that the benefits from budget saving could be felt by all people. Another 200 will be deported on Wednesday, Indonesia’s ambassador to Malaysia Herman Prayitno said, adding that more illegal workers may be sent back next year. Muhammad Arifuddin, who worked as a labourer in construction for four years in Malaysia before being arrested, said he hopes to return to seek legal employment. “I will try to get the legal documents and return to Malaysia to work,” the 36-year-old told AFP. Malaysia draws migrants from across the region and even from South Asian nations such as India, Nepal and Bangladesh. More than six million foreign migrants, most of them illegals, are thought to work in factories, plantations, restaurants and in other jobs largely shunned by more affluent Malaysians. But Yeah Kim Leng, dean of Malaysia University of Science and Technolgy, said it looked like authorities were clamping down on illegal workers as growth has started to slow. “The Malaysian economy is softening. India’s BJP looks set to make gains in state polls

SRINAGAR, India — India’s ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janta Party looked poised Tuesday to emerge as an important political player in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir, as votes in local elections were being counted. The party had led an ambitious campaign aiming for a majority in India’s only Muslim-majority state, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi visiting and addressing rallies four times. The BJP’s gains are seen as a confirmation of Modi’s popularity and are likely to help him push through the economic reforms he has promised. By midday Tuesday, the BJP had won 18 seats and was leading in another six in the region’s 87-strong state legislature, a significant jump from the 11 seats it currently holds. DHAKA — A special tribunal in Bangladesh on Tuesday sentenced a former Cabinet member to death after convicting him of collaborating with the Pakistani army to help carry out several killings of civilians during Bangladesh’s 1971 independence war. Judge Obaidul Hasan announced the verdict against 73-year-old Syed Mohammed Kaiser in a packed courtroom in Dhaka. Bangladesh blames Pakistani soldiers and local collaborators for the deaths of 3 million people during the nine-month war. An estimated 200,000 women were raped and about 10 million people were forced to take shelter in refugee camps in neighboring India. Two separate tribunals in Bangladesh have been handling war crimes trials since 2010. Kaiser, the junior minister for agriculture under former military dictator H.M. Ershad, who ruled the country for nine years until 1990, was in the court for Tuesday’s verdict and sentencing. The prosecution welcomed the verdict, while defense said it would appeal.
