Santana reunites with ex-bandmate, now homeless

OAKLAND, California — A news reporter for a San Francisco television station has reunited rock guitarist Carolos Santana with a former bandmate he hadn’t seen in decades and who now lives on the streets of Oakland. Reporter Stanley Roberts ran into percussionist Marcus “The Magnificent” Malone while working on a story about illegal dumping last week, KRON-TV in San Francisco reported.

Although he initially was skeptical of the homeless man’s claim that the Santana Blues Band got its start in his mother’s garage in the late 1960s, Roberts checked out the story and confirmed it. And on Friday, he took Santana for a surprise visit to the camper where Malone has been staying. “You don’t know how afraid I am to let you see me,” Malone said softly after he and the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer embraced. “We cherish you,” Santana replied. “It’s an honor to be in

your presence.” Santana has credited Malone with being an important influence on his AfroLatin sound, according to former Rolling Stone magazine writer Ben Fong-Torres’ book “Not Fade Away: A Backstage Ticket to 20 Years of Rock & Roll.” Malone played congas on Santana’s eponymous first album, but left the band in 1969 shortly before its seminal performance at Woodstock when he was imprisoned for manslaughter, according to Fong-Torres.

SINGARAJA - When entering the rainy season, a group of residents in Buleleng independently did fogging to eradicate mosquito nests. As planned, the fogging would be implemented for five days starting on Sunday. “Fogging is our shared responsibility, not just waiting for the government,” he said. Such independent fogging was also carried out by residents in the housing complex of Graha Panji Asri, Bangah hamlet, Panji village, Sukasada subdistrict. Neighborhood head of Graha Panji Asri, Roy, said that puddles frequently occurred in the residential area during the rainy season. It was feared to be a nest of mosquito transmitting dengue. DENPASAR - The pursuit against the murder culprit of a Bali Police cop, I Putu Suarsa, by a joint team of Bali Police, Denpasar Metro Police and South Denpasar Police was not in vain. The murderer named M. Subahan, 35, could be arrested in a chicken coop at Kumuk Leleng hamlet, Sebaman village, Kalisat subdistrict, Jember, East Java, Sunday (Dec 22) at 5:45 a.m. local time. After the arrest, the suspect was immediately taken to Denpasar Metro Police. Chief of Denpasar Metro Police, Djoko Hariutomo, said the arrest of the cop murderer was due to the hard work of the joint team. After the incident, a number of personnel were immediately assigned to Jember to track the whereabouts of the suspect. “The suspect was arrested while he was asleep in the chicken coop. He could not move when arrested,” explained Chief Djoko Hariutomo on Sunday while saying the suspect arrived at 5:00 p.m. After murdering the victim, the suspect immediately fled to Jember by public transportation to Ubung terminal and then boarded a bus to Jember. When he was a fugitive of police, the suspect was hiding in Jember. “He (the suspect) did not go anywhere but hid in Jember. Fortunately, members of the joint team could catch him,” he told media crews on Sunday. Previously, police had rummage through the location alleged to be-

It was unknown what happened then, they were involved in physical fights and squabbles to end up with hacking. Finally, the victim was killed by the suspect. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Congress eyes spy review in surveillance logjam WASHINGTON — A White House review of U.S. surveillance programs has given Congress some temporary political cover after lawmakers failed this year to overhaul spy operations, and could break the legislative snarl that followed months of global outrage over privacy intrusions. Since last summer, a deeply divided Congress has tussled over competing plans to protect Americans’ privacy rights by limiting National Security Agency powers to track terrorists. But a presidential advisory panel’s 46 tough recommendations, released this past week by the White House, offer a way ahead for lawmakers who face the voters next fall. They can point to the suggestions to save face politically with security-minded constituents if surveillance is scaled back aggressively. “The American public is expressing an opinion that it feels safer, and we don’t need as many of these intrusive-sounding programs as we needed a decade ago,” said Tom Newcomb, a former CIA officer and lawyer who served as a counterterrorism adviser to President George W. Bush. “The political risk, as I see it, is all of this changes if we get a terrorist attack or a significant attempt that scares us again,” said Newcomb, who’s now a criminal justice and political science professor at Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio. “And then Congress, which has generally taken it upon itself to assign blame, will blame those who reformed.” At the least, the review finally could prod Congress into defining the extent to which the U.S. should spy on its citizens and foreign allies. The recommendations “reaffirm what many of my colleagues and I have been saying since June — the NSA has gone too far,” said Republican Rep. James F. Sensenbrenner. The review group adopted the central part of legislation that he is pushing — barring the NSA from its massive daily sweep of U.S. telephone records. Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden said he found a lot in the report “for a reformer to like.”

By late Sunday, ice and snow had knocked out power to 440,000 homes and businesses in Michigan, upstate New York and northern New England — about half of whom had their power back by early Monday. The storm also left more than 400,000 people without electricity in eastern Canada. At least nine deaths in the U.S. were blamed on the storm, including five people killed in flooding in Kentucky and a woman who died after a tornado with winds of 130 mph struck in Arkansas.

MOSCOW - Russia has sent 25 armored trucks and 50 other vehicles to Syria to help transport toxins that are to be destroyed under an international agreement to rid the nation of its chemical arsenal, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Monday. In a report to President Vladimir Putin, Shoigu said Russian aircraft delivered 50 Kamaz trucks and 25 Ural armored trucks to the Syrian port city of Latakia on December 18-20 along with other equipment, staterun news agency RIA reported. “The Defence Ministry has very swiftly implemented actions to deliver to Syria equipment and materiel to provide for the removal of Syrian chemical weapons and their destruction,” Shoigu was quoted as saying. Syria has agreed to abandon it chemical weapons under a deal proposed by Russia to avert potential U.S. military action after a deadly August 21 sarin gas attack the United States blamed on President Bashar al-Assad’s government.

Sea Shepherd criticised the move, with Australian chairman Bob Brown describing it as a “pretty, cowardly” backdown by the conservative government in a bid to appease Japan due to ongoing free trade negotiations. “They’ll fly over and look from a great height. What are they going to do if something’s going wrong down there? Where are they going to send a vessel from? NEW YORK - A man involved in a custody dispute who was supposed to turn his 3-year-old son over to the boy’s mother instead threw the child off the roof of a 52-story Manhattan apartment building before jumping to his death, police said. Officers responding to an emergency call reporting two jumpers from the building on the Upper West Side around noon Sunday found Dmitriy Kanarikov, 35, and the boy on the lower rooftops of two separate nearby buildings. The man was pronounced dead at the scene and his son, Kirill Kanarikov, was pronounced dead at a hospital, police said. A witness said the boy was wearing Christmas pajamas. The boy’s mother had custody of the child and the father, who had visitation rights, was supposed to hand the boy over to the mother at a police precinct Sunday afternoon, authorities said. Luis Ortiz told the New York Post that he was at the hospital when paramedics rushed the boy there and that they were pumping his chest and working on him. “You could tell he was slipping away. They said the father was up there, but they didn’t bring anyone else in. It was just heartbreaking. I have two kids of my own. They tried to do the best they could,” Ortiz told the newspaper. Ortiz told the New York Daily News that the tot was dressed in Christmas pajamas. Authorities said the father did not live in the building listed as South Park Tower, which is a short distance away from Columbus Circle and Lincoln Center. Police investigating the deaths left the building in the mid-afternoon to photograph a gray Lexus RX350 parked nearby. It’s the second time this year that a parent and child have been involved in a fatal plunge from a New York apartment building. In March, a woman clutching her baby son in her arms plunged eight stories out of a Harlem apartment window to her death, but the 10-month-old survived. Authorities found a suicide note in her home.

Indonesia sees better investment prospects The Indonesian government has predicted that the country’s investment target, set at Rp390 trillion this year, could be achieved, expressing optimism that interest by foreign investors in Indonesia will increase in 2014.

Deputy Finance Minister Mahendra Sirgar said he was optimistic that the 2013 investment target of Rp390 trillion will be achieved, regardless that the country’s economic growth was slowing. “If we look at the figure, we can achieve it. I can see that the investment target at Rp390 trillion for the entire year of 2013 can be realized,” Mahendra said during a recent seminar. In the meantime, head of the Finance Ministry’s Macro Economic Study Center, Luky Alfirman, said on Thursday that interest by foreign businesses in investing capital in Indonesia would increase in 2014. “Indonesia will remain a main target for investments by foreign investors,” Luky Alfirman said. He added that the strong interest by foreign investors to make investments in Indonesia was inseparable from the country’s promising potential and domestic economic growth, which could exceed five percent. “Besides that, Indonesia has investment opportunities which are better than those found in other countries,” Alfirman said. Yet, Mahendra, who is also the head of the BKPM, said that the growth of investment in 2014 could increase by 15 percent, even through economic growth would still face constraints. “I believe the investment growth will reach 15 percent in 2014. But I will do my best to exceed 15 percent,” the BKPM chief said on Dec. 4. Mahendra noted that the increase in investment could be boosted by investment in downstream industries or in the mineral resources processing industry, in line with the law on mineral and coal development. The law is expected to be put into effect next year. He also expressed hope that domestic investment next year will reach 40 percent of total investment values in Indonesia, or almost the same as the values of foreign investment, which always dominated portfolio investments. “We hope domestic investment in 2014 would reach 40 percent of total investment values. Like the BPKM, HSBC Indonesia has also predicted that Indonesia will still see positive investment growth in 2014, despite the discouraging trend of an economic slowdown. Investment would continue to grow because of proper handling of inflation and the trade balance by the government, HSBC Indonesia Managing Director of Global Markets, Ali Setiawan, said during a seminar last month entitled “HSBC Global Economic Outlook 2014”. “Bank Indonesia (the central bank) has taken a series of steps and the government has been consistent in its policy in dealing with structural problems and redressing the trade balance,” Ali said. He said Japan still places Indonesia on top of its investment destination list. “Indonesia has done a good job in the eye of the international community. Indonesia is the most interesting, not only for Japanese investors. European and US investors also are similarly interested,” he said. The investment market is still large in Indonesia, he added, citing Java remaining open for new investments, such as in infrastructure. “In the infrastructure sector we are still lagging behind neighboring countries. Fundamentally, the Indonesian economy is still growing, therefore, there was cause for much concern,” he said. The government, however, needs to be more transparent and consistent in carrying out its policies, he emphasised.

PYONGYANG, North Korea — Dennis Rodman may not get to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on his latest visit to the country, but he said that won’t stop him from coming back on Kim’s birthday next month to hold an exhibition game with other former basketball stars. On the night before he was due to leave Pyongyang, Rodman told The Associated Press on Sunday that he had not yet had a meeting with Kim. The flamboyant Hall of Famer said that he didn’t expect to meet the leader every time he comes to North Korea, and that his current trip was for training North Korean basketball players who will take part in the match Rodman is organizing for Kim’s birthday on Jan. 8. “I’m not just coming over here to meet the leader,” Rodman said. “I came over here to meet the basketball team, to prepare a great game for the leader for his birthday. And people need to understand that it’s not important for me to meet him every time I come over because he has another greater job to do for his country, and I respect that, but

this trip was basically to come over to train the team, so we can have a great, great, game.” Rodman’s visit comes just after the dramatic purge and execution of Kim’s once-powerful uncle, which has sparked speculation among some foreign analysts over how stable Kim’s regime is. But officials here say that there is no instability and that Kim remains firmly in control. Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic gave PSG the lead in the 36th minute with a 25-yard free kick that took a deflection off the Lille wall. But Lille captain Rio Mavuba pounced on a low cross from Salomon Kalou to level with a first-time effort in the 44th before Kalou converted a penalty in the 53rd. The hosts equalized with an own goal from Lille centerback Marko Basa in the 72nd. “The boys had an outstanding game and they showed their season is no fluke,” Lille coach Rene Girard said. “For us, it’s like a victory.” Lille stayed in third place, one point behind Monaco.
