Backstreet Boy Nick Carter denies 2002 rape allegation

LOS ANGELES - Backstreet Boy singer Nick Carter on Wednesday denied an allegation that he raped a teen pop singer 15 years ago, saying he was “shocked and saddened” by the accusation. Melissa Schuman, who was a member of girl group Dream in the late 1990s, claimed in a lengthy blog post earlier this month that Carter forced her to have oral sex and raped her in 2002 when she was 18 and he was 22. Reuters was unable to independently confirm Schuman’s allegation. “I am shocked and saddened by Ms. Schuman’s accusations,” Carter, now 37, said in a statement that was emailed to media outlets. “Melissa never expressed to me while we were together or at any time since that anything we did was not consensual.

“It is contrary to my nature and everything I hold dear to intentionally cause someone discomfort or harm,” he said in the statement. Schuman could not immediately be reached for comment on Carter’s statement. She left Dream in 2002, and after the band made a brief comeback in 2015, it disbanded again in 2016. She wrote on her blog in a Nov. 2 post titled “Melissa Explains It All” that she had decided to come forward after women made accusations against other prominent men in entertainment and politics, and the #MeToo social media movement. The Backstreet Boys were one of the biggest boy bands of the late 1990s and early 2000s, with hits like “Quit Playing Games With My Heart.” Carter and the band are currently playing a concert residency in Las Vegas that is scheduled to run through February 2018. BERLIN - German police presented on Tuesday diaries, pairs of glasses and other items belonging to late Beatle John Lennon that were stolen from his widow Yoko Ono in 2006 and eventually ended up in Berlin. Police arrested a man in Berlin on Monday suspected of receiving the 86 stolen items, which include Lennon’s last diary that ended on the day he was shot and killed in New York on Dec. 8, 1980. “This day contains the entry that on that morning John Lennon and Yoko Ono had an appointment with Annie Leibovitz to take a photo which I think is world famous,” Berlin prosecutor Michael von Hagen told a news conference. The Leibovitz portrait of a naked Lennon curled up around Ono on their bed ran on the January 1981 cover of Rolling Stone magazine. Hagen rejected suggestions that Ono might have lent or given away the objects: “The diaries especially ... were also treated by Yoko Ono as something sacred. And the idea that she would have given away three original diaries, especially the one that ends on the very day Lennon died, can be completely ruled out.” Carsten Pfohl, head of property crime for Berlin police, said investigators had found one of the pairs of glasses and a receipt in Lennon’s name hidden in the trunk of the car of the accused on Monday. Police suspect that the items were stolen by Ono’s former driver and then taken to Turkey and were only brought to Berlin in 2013 or 2014. Another suspect lives in Turkey, they said. (rtr)

Mugabe granted immunity, assured of safety in Zimbabwe -sources

HARARE - Zimbabwe’s former president Robert Mugabe was granted immunity from prosecution and assured that his safety would be protected in his home country as part of a deal that led to his resignation, sources close to the negotiations said on Thursday. Mugabe, who had led Zimbabwe from independence in 1980, stepped down on Tuesday after the army seized power and the ruling party turned against him. Emmerson Mnangagwa, the former vice president sacked by Mugabe earlier this month, is set to be sworn in as president on Friday. A government source said Mugabe, who is 93, told negotiators he wanted to die in Zimbabwe and had no plans to live in exile. “It was very emotional for him and he was forceful about it,” said the source, who is not authorised to speak on the details of the negotiated settlement. “For him it was very important that he be guaranteed security

to stay in the country...although that will not stop him from travelling abroad when he wants to or has to,” the source said. Mugabe resigned on Tuesday as parliament began a process to impeach him, sparking wild celebrations in the streets. His rapid downfall after 37 years in power was triggered by a battle to succeed

him that pitted Mnangagwa against Mugabe’s much younger wife Grace. “The outgoing president is obviously aware of the public hostility to his wife, the anger in some circles about the manner in which she conducted herself and approached ZANU-PF party politics,” a second source said. “In that regard, it became necessary to also assure him that his whole family, including the wife, would be safe and secure.” Mugabe had clung on to power for a week after the military intervened. He angered many Zimbabweans when he did not resign in a televised address on Sunday as many had anticipated. The government source said the tipping point for him was the realisation that he would be impeached

and ousted in an undignified way. “When the process started, he then realised he had lost the party,” the source said. Mugabe will receive a retirement package that includes a pension, housing, holiday and transport allowance, health insurance, limited air travel and security. The ageing former president was “rugged and drained” by events of the past week and may travel to Singapore for medical checks in the coming weeks, the source said. He had been due to leave for Singapore in mid-November before the military put him under house arrest. Mugabe has maintained that he leads a frugal life and that he does not possess any wealth or properties outside Zimbabwe But last month a legal quarrel

between Grace and a Belgian-based businessman over a $1.3 million diamond ring lifted a veil on the wealthy lifestyle of Mugabe and his wife, nicknamed “Gucci Grace” for her reputed dedication to shopping. Mount Agung’s puff of smoke not expected to disturb tourism

DENPASAR —Grey smoke from Mount Agung caused by a phreatic eruption emerging from Mount Agung is not expected to interfere with tourism in Bali even though previous volcanic activity did lead to a decrease in the number of tourists arriving to Bali. This was especially noticeable after the alert level for the highest mountain in Bali was raised to level IV warning. “There was a 15 percent decrease in tourist arrivals from August to September”, said the Head of Bali Tourism Office, A.A. Gede Yuniartha Putra, in Denpasar, on Wednesday (Nov. 22). According to Yuniartha, this decline in number was probably due to many tourists delaying their trip to Bali due to the threat of an eruption by Mount Agung. Delays, however are not the same as cancelations, he added. “Cancelling is not so easy and it means not getting a refund. So in my opinion, many tourists just delay their trip but it mean a decrease in the number of visitors”, he explained. There was in fact a 25 percent increase in the number of visitors this September, said Yuniartha, compared to the previous year. All parties- including the mass media, are therefore being asked to be careful about how they approach this topic and not be excessive in their coverage. Ngurah Rai Airports flight activities also remain normal, he added. “Do not say ‘ the mountain erupted”, because our this has a bad effect on tourism. ‘ A cloud of smoke’ – say it like that. Yuniartha said that he is optimistic that the target of 5. 5 million tourists by the end of the year will be reached and even exceeded – despite the alert level for Mount Agung. “As of October there have been 5 million more than the target of 5.5 million and there are still two months left in the year. On average there are 15,000 tourists who come to Bali every day, which is 450,000 a month -multiplied by two months, is 900,000. So, we may very well exceed the target”, he said. Meanwhile, Deputy Governor of Bali, I Ketut Sudikerta, is appealing to the public to remain calm regarding the puffs of grey smoke. A volcanic eruption cannot be avoided and it is not known for sure when it will happen. “I therefore, invite everyone to remain calm an careful with regards to the alert levels for Mount Agung. Our disaster team has been alerted and is monitoring progress at the location”, he said. Regarding the possibility of people being evacuated again, Sudikerta admitted that he had coordinated with the Head of Logistics Agency, Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Bali and regent of Karangasem related to the availability of supplies and has scheduled direct monitoring of evacuation sites. Angels or demons? Politics in the air as Victoria’s Secret show hits China

SHANGHAI - Victoria’s Secret’s glitzy annual fashion show hit the stage in China for the first time on Monday, though without several of its “Angels” and star names who had been expected to attend, including model Gigi Hadid and pop singer Katy Perry. At a packed Shanghai stadium, British singer Harry Styles opened a 45-minute show of singers, dancers and lighting theatrics - along with a line-up of models sporting the brand’s flamboyant and racy lingerie. The run-up to the show, however, was dominated by Hadid’s withdrawal and reports about visas being denied over political sensitivities - a headache for the underwear brand as it looks to grow in China. Perry and Hadid have both drawn criticism in China. At a 2015 concert, Perry appeared to show support for Taiwan, a self-governed

island that China considers a wayward province yet an integral part of its territory. Mentally ill woman secured by police after making tourists in Ubud uneasy

GIANYAR — Gianyar’s Municipal Police secured a 60 yearol mentally ill woman named Jero Lasia on Tuesday (Nov. 21) after she had been rampaging around Ubud Palace making local residents and tourists uneasy. The mentally ill woman from Ubud Kelod attempted to resist the police’s efforts to secure her. Operations officer of Gianyar Municipal Police, Wayan Nasta, explained that last Tuesday Jero Lasia left her house located to the south of the headman of Ubud’s office. She headed to the heart of Ubud, wandering around Ubud Palace. “Jero Lasia was carrying used clothes which she then spread out on the sidewalk annoying passing tourists”, said Nasta. This is not the first time that Lasia has disturbed tourists in Ubud, explained, Officer Wayan Nasta. Occasionally she has been known to scream hysterically thus disturbing people in the heart of Ubud. “Her acts have disturbed public order. Moreover, she has done so near the Ubud Palace which is crowded with tourists”, he explained. Having received information about Jero Lasia having disturbed tourists and residents around the Ubud Palace, the headman of Ubud reported the incident to the Gianyar Municipal Police. “After receiving the report, we went to Ubud to secure Mrs. Lasia”, said Officer Nasta. Wayan Nasta, who is known for being gifted at dealing with mentally ill people, explained that when he first approached Jera Lasia she recoiled and then tried to fight back when the officers took her hand. “ She then ran amuck, but we gradually persuaded her to come with us”, he said. While running amuck, Jero Lasia screamed hysterically ignoring her son who had joined the security team. Her son told the officers to ignore her screaming and they gradually persuaded her to get into the Gianyar Municipal Police vehicle. The elderly widow was taken directly form Ubud to the Bangli Mental Hospital (RSJ) for treatment. Wayan Nasta added that Jero Lasia had been secured by the Municipal Police last year due to similar disturbances. Lasia’s menatl illness he added was brought on after the death of her husband. “When her husband died, she immediately became very stressed”, explained Officer Nasta. (kmb35)

Suwiantara is the third child of seven, born to Nengah Sumendra and Ketut Sintang. When met at his home on Tuesday (Nov. 21), he explained that he has had this illness since junior high school. At first his fingers became stiff, but over time the symptoms have gotten worse but he prefers to be treated at home where he can continue being active. When Suwiantara was 17 years old, he started learning to make furniture like tables, chairs cuboards and the like. “ I used to be able to make big pieces like cupboards, but now that my condition has made me weaker I

Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG)’s Volcanic Subdivision Head for Eastern Region, Kamil Devy Syahbana, confirmed that there had in fact been ash coming out of Mount Agung. BANGLI — The Mount Agung Disaster Relief Command in the district of Bangli District continuously collects data on the number of evacuees in Bangli. The latest data as of Wednesday (Nov. 22) showed that the number of evacuees in Bangli had not increased from the 124 that were there before the phreatic eruption of Mount Agung on Tuesday (Nov 20). Commander of the Bangli Mount Agung Disaster Response Post, Andy Pranoto, said that as of Wednesday: “no additional evacuees have arrived. The number of evacuees in Bangli remains at 124 people”, he explained. Nevertheless, according to the results of meeting held with his ranks last Wednesday afternoon, they are still anticipatory measures in preparation of a possible surge in the number of evacuees. There are rooms at the Kubu evacuation post that are ready to receive evacuees even if they arrive at night. Signs have also been set up at important points along the route that evacuees may arrive from so that if there is an increase in the alert level of Mount Agung again people will be no confusion in Bangli about how to get to the Kubu and SKB posts.

“Each section will continue to follow developments of the situation through existing communication networks such as social media, so that we can respond quickly at anytime if needed”, he explained. Evacuees who are already in Bangli continue to be served, said Pranoto, adding that the Kubu has enough stock to last for two weeks. The Logistics Division continues to inventory the the stock of food and to make sure that food does not exceed expiry dates. “Amongst other things we have been applying the first in first out principle”, he explained. The inventorying of medicines is also ongoing to make sure that necessary medicines are being procured, as this will become very important if the number of evacuees suddenly increases due to further volcanic activity from Mount Agung. Health officers at the Kubu post are only on duty from morning until noon for now, with afternoon service available on call or through the Kubu Health center. “Officers from all involved government agencies have had their duties adjusted for the sake of effectiveness and efficiency”, explained Pranoto. The forms that the refugees will have to fill include names of family members, their previous address in Myanmar, date of birth and a disclaimer that they are returning voluntarily, said Myint Kyaing. He said that based on the 1992-1993 agreement, Myanmar would accept those who could present identification documents issued to the Rohingya by Myanmar governments in the past. Those include the currently distributed national verification cards, as well as now-withdrawn “white cards”, as well a s receipts the Rohingya received when returning their “white cards”, he said. Diplomats and aid workers have said the key elements of the deal will be the criteria of return and the participation of the international community, such as the United Nations refugee agency, in the process. BUSINESS Whether new dawn or another false one, euro zone economy is full of surprises

LONDON - The surprise economic star of 2017, when it wraps up next month, will have been the euro zone: growth looks set to come in at 2.2 percent compared with a forecast this time last year of just 1.4 percent. Combine this with four years of falling unemployment and inflation well out of the deflation-worry zone, and policymakers and politicians have something to crow about. But is something substantial going on, or this another false dawn for an economy that has managed less than 1.6 percent average annual growth in its 18-year history? A sceptic might say it is all just cyclical, soon to reverse. Or that it is simply the result of 2.2 trillion euros in alreadybeing-rolled-back European Central Bank stimulus forcing a famously sclerotic economy to budge. Both have certainly played a role -- but although there are risks that does not mean the growth impetus is not different from previous upswings or that it will end quickly. The cyclical argument, for example, stems from the euro zone’s proclivity to lag the U.S. economy, tending to start a takeoff just as the latter is stalling. Indeed, the current euro zone cycle is four years behind the U.S. one. With some signs the long U.S. economic recovery might be peaking -- recent surveys have been flat to lower, and bonds are giving warning signals -- the sceptic could claim that in typical fashion the euro zone has started just as the Top Gun has finished. But there are differences from, say, 2006 when after four years of lagging growth the euro zone surpassed the United States only to tumble as the financial crisis hurt both countries. One, says Paola Subacchi, a senior fellow at Chatham House, is Europe’s acceptance that growth sometimes needs help. “There is now an understanding -- even in (fiscally hardline) Germany -- that demand needs to be supported,” she said. “Unlike 10 years ago, or even five years ago, there is an understanding that you can’t just sit and wait for growth.” It is not that austerity measures introduced after the financial collapse have been dumped wholesale, rather that some

governments are more willing to add spending to the mix -especially after many voters deserted mainstream parties. Germany, for example, has increased public spending on roads and bridges, faster internet and social housing -- turning state spending into one of the most important growth drivers in the euro zone’s economic powerhouse over the past two years.

MOMENTUM

Some structural reforms have been undertaken after years of being called for in vain by central bankers, the International Monetary Fund and others. More flexible labour laws -- notably in Spain and Ireland -- have helped prompt growth, notes Florian Hense, European economist at Berenberg bank. “What keeps things going are employment gains,” he said. The argument here for a continuation of growth is that there is plenty of spare capacity in the work force. Although well off its mid-2013 high of 12.1 percent, the euro zone’s unemployment rate is still 8.9 percent -- enough, Hense reckons, for two more years before there is any labour shortage. Attempts are also being made to keep such reform coming. In France, President Emmanuel Macron has already signed decrees to cap payouts on unfair dismissals, while also giving companies greater freedom to hire and fire. The balance for euro zone reformers will be how to achieve their plans against a wave of anti-establishment sentiment among voters angry at being left out of the post-financial crisis recovery. The euro zone’s new growth climate has also been fostered by the ECB’s stimulus, but its withdrawal may not be as damaging as it was in 2011-2012. Sarah Hewin, chief economist for Europe at Standard Bank, says the ECB pulled stimulus too early then and that its balance sheet -- the assets it holds -- was shrinking in 2012-2014, when the euro zone slipped into its second recession. But that was also the height of the euro zone debt crisis, much of which has been patched up. The ECB’s recent decision to halve what it buys has caused little angst because it is moving slowly. Stimulus will continue -- balanced against growth -- and low interest rates are pretty much a euro zone fixture.

So is everything rosy? No. Risks remain, including broad ones like a China-led global slowdown. The latest worry is the prospect of political disruption in Germany given Chancellor Angela Merkel’s failure to build a coalition government. Add to that possible electoral upheaval in Italy next year and you have the same kind of political uncertainty as at the beginning of 2017, when there were concern about anti-euro zone candidates winning in the Netherlands, France and Germany. But for now, economists appear to see this as just noise, banking on the foundations of euro zone growth to call for just a gentle slowing next year after this year’s surprise. “It would require a major policy upset somewhere around the world (to end this),” Berenberg’s Hense said. Fog was descending on Wanagiri village, Sukasada, Buleleng, when we arrived and soon it started to drizzle and cool air swept in, even though it was high noon. Although the weather was not ideal for taking pictures, we were enthusiastic about taking selfies at the Black Bamboo Tower. This location is one of eight selfie attractions in the customary hamlet of Bhuana Sari, in Wanagiri Village. The iconic Black Bamboo Tower stands on the edge of a cliff by the side of the road with Lake Bunyan and verdant hills as a backdrop.

Operator of Bhuana Sari customary hamlet, Ketut Darma, said that bamboo belonging to the local customary village was used to make the iconic selfie attraction and that three security guards are on duty everyday to ensure the security of the increasing number of visitors who come to Black Bamboo Tower. “On a quiet day we get about 3040 visitors but on holidays there is a 80 percent increase in the number of people who come to take pictures here. According to the customary hamlet’s agreement, visitors are charged IDR 15,000 per person to take as many pictures as they want”, explained Darma. Black Bamboo Tower is not the only selfie attraction at Bhuana Sari customary hamlet. There are four other selfie spots along 15 meters of this road each offering a different style and which support one and other. There are plans to build another one soon so that more visitors can be accommodated. “Security is guaranteed. Yesterday, a sub-district police chief investigated the location and determined that it was safe”, said Darma. Asah’s hamlet Panji, Ketut Suwena, said that all of

the selfie attractions that have been developed over th past 7 years in Wanagiri Village are actually located in protected forest areas. However, the local villages submitted a request to the National Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) asking that they be allowed to utilize this area. So far, the BKSDA has granted one selfie tourist attraction per customary hamlet. Wanagiri village has 4 customary hamlets namely; Bhuana Sari, Yeh Ketipat, Asah Panji Kaja, and Asah Panji Kelod. “In short, of the eight selfie attractions in Wanagiri village, only the ones at Bhuana Sari customary hamlet have been granted permission by the BKSDA. The others have no agreement with the customary village’s selfie-site management group”, said Suwena. According to Suwena, the BKSDA has limited the number of selfie-sites to four and has stipulated that such sites should not be managed by individuals or private groups as this could lead to jealousy. This limit is also meant to prevent a saturation of such sites as this could create chaos as lead to possible security risks. “Let the BKSDA determine the limits on such buildings including how far they can jut out off the cliff, how they should be designed and so forth. So far only Bhuana Sari has been given the ok from the BSKDA”, explained Suwena. Division Head of Tourist Destinations for the Bali Tourism Office, Ida Bagus Adi Laksana, said he strongly supports local people creating selfie tourist attractions adding that management issues should be resolved through discussions. Each village should also have clear guidelines so as to prevent the mushrooming of such sites. “Hopefully such guidelines can be made clear by governing bodies that will be established under village authorities. Search for missing Argentine submarine reaches ‘critical phase’

MAR DEL PLATA - The search for an Argentine navy submarine missing in the South Atlantic for one week reached a “critical phase” on Wednesday as the 44 crew on board could be running low on oxygen, a navy spokesman said. Dozens of planes and boats were searching for the ARA San Juan, a mission that has plunged relatives of the sailors into an anguished wait for news and transfixed the South American country of 44 million people. If the German-built submarine, in service for more than three decades, had sunk or was otherwise unable to rise to the surface since it gave its last location on Nov. 15, it would be using up the last of its seven-day oxygen supply. “We are in the critical phase...particularly with respect to oxygen,” navy spokesman Enrique Balbi told reporters. “There has been no contact with anything that could be the San Juan submarine.” Relatives of the crew members have gathered at a naval base in Mar del Plata, where the search is coordinated. Their concern grew as the hours ticked by. The craft was probably on the seabed because the mechanism to surface either failed or was not activated by a crew member, naval investigator Fernando Morales told Reuters in a telephone interview. “If the captain stayed at the bottom because he thought it was more prudent to stay at the bottom, it’s one thing. His own human rights record also stirs hostility in many Zimbabweans. He was in charge of internal security when rights groups say 20,000 civilians were killed in the 1980s. Restoring the country’s fortunes and international standing will be a challenge. Human rights abuses and flawed elections prompted many Western countries to impose sanctions in the early 2000s that further hurt the economy, even with Chinese investment to soften the blow. Indonesian startup wages war on plastic with edible seaweed cups

JAKARTA - Jakarta food and beverages retailer Ong Tek Tjan sells ice cream in cups his customers can eat afterwards, instead of throwing away - they are made from seaweed and taste like jelly, in flavours from peppermint to green tea. Indonesian startup Evoware, which makes the cups, as well as other containers, from farmed seaweed free of chemicals, is relying on its biodegradable alternative to plastic packaging to reduce contamination of the environment.

THE HAGUE - A U.N. tribunal on Wednesday convicted ex-Bosnian Serb military commander Ratko Mladic of genocide and crimes against humanity for massacres of Bosnian Muslims and ethnic cleansing campaigns to forge a “Greater Serbia”, and jailed him for life. Mladic was hustled out of the court minutes before the verdict for angrily shouting, “This is all lies, you are all liars!” The outburst occurred after Mladic returned to the courtroom from what his lawyers described as a visit to the bathroom, then a blood pressure test which held up proceedings. The U.N. Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) found Mladic guilty of 10 of 11 charges, including the slaughter of 8,000 Muslim men and boys at Srebrenica and the 43-month siege of the Bosnian capital Sarajevo, in which more than 10,000 civilians were killed by shelling, mortar and sniper fire. The killings in Srebrenica of men and boys after they were separated from women and taken away in buses or marched off to be shot amounted to Europe’s worst atrocity since World War Two. “The crimes committed rank among the most heinous known to humankind, and include genocide and extermination as a crime against humanity,” Presiding Judge Alphons Orie said in reading out a summary of the judg-

ment. “Many of these men and boys were cursed, insulted, threatened, forced to sing Serb songs and beaten while awaiting their execution,” he said. Mladic had pleaded not guilty to all charges. His legal team said he would appeal against the verdict. Chelsea’s European campaign suffered a setback last month with a 3-0 defeat at AS Roma but they regained top spot in Group C after Wednesday’s 4-0 win over Qarabag in Azerbaijan. “This group is showing great character,” Conte told reporters after the match. “From the start we faced a lot of problems this season. Our answer was positive, almost always positive. For sure, the second half against Roma was bad. “These players show me every day great commitment, great will, desire to fight.” Conte has questioned the lack of preparation time between domestic and European fixtures and raised the issue again as Chelsea turn their attention to Saturday’s Premier League trip to Liverpool. “To have only one day to rest and only one day to prepare (for) this big game is not simple, is not easy. Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is pleased with the way his side have reacted to setbacks this season and says the players have shown great character to reach the last 16 of the Champions League. Search for missing Argentine submarine reaches ‘critical phase’

MAR DEL PLATA - The search for an Argentine navy submarine missing in the South Atlantic for one week reached a “critical phase” on Wednesday as the 44 crew on board could be running low on oxygen, a navy spokesman said. Dozens of planes and boats were searching for the ARA San Juan, a mission that has plunged relatives of the sailors into an anguished wait for news and transfixed the South American country of 44 million people. If the German-built submarine, in service for more than three decades, had sunk or was otherwise unable to rise to the surface since it gave its last location on Nov. 15, it would be using up the last of its seven-day oxygen supply. “We are in the critical phase...particularly with respect to oxygen,” navy spokesman Enrique Balbi told reporters. “There has been no contact with anything that could be the San Juan submarine.” Relatives of the crew members have gathered at a naval base in Mar del Plata, where the search is coordinated. Their concern grew as the hours ticked by. The craft was probably on the seabed because the mechanism to surface either failed or was not activated by a crew member, naval investigator Fernando Morales told Reuters in a telephone interview. “If the captain stayed at the bottom because he thought it was more prudent to stay at the bottom, it’s one thing. But at this point we have to think that if he’s at the bottom, it’s because he could not emerge,” Morales said. In an evening news conference, Balbi said an unusual noise was detected on Nov. 15, near where the submarine last reported its position. The voice of the people is the voice of God,” Mnangagwa told thousands of supporters gathered outside the ruling ZANU-PF party’s offices in the capital. The army appears to have engineered a trouble-free path to power for Mnangagwa, who was for decades a faithful lieutenant of Mugabe and member of his elite. His own human rights record also stirs hostility in many Zimbabweans. He was in charge of internal security when rights groups say 20,000 civilians were killed in the 1980s. Restoring the country’s fortunes and international standing will be a challenge. Human rights abuses and flawed elections prompted many Western countries to impose sanctions in the early 2000s that further hurt the economy, even with Chinese investment to soften the blow. Staging clean elections next year will be key to winning fresh funds. In its first official comments since Mugabe resigned, the opposition Movement for Democratic Change said it was cautiously optimistic that a Mnangagwa presidency would not “mimic and replicate the evil, corrupt, decadent and incompetent Mugabe regime”. JAKARTA - Jakarta food and beverages retailer Ong Tek Tjan sells ice cream in cups his customers can eat afterwards, instead of throwing away - they are made from seaweed and taste like jelly, in flavours from peppermint to green tea. Indonesian startup Evoware, which makes the cups, as well as other containers, from farmed seaweed free of chemicals, is relying on its biodegradable alternative to plastic packaging to reduce contamination of the environment.

THE HAGUE - A U.N. tribunal on Wednesday convicted ex-Bosnian Serb military commander Ratko Mladic of genocide and crimes against humanity for massacres of Bosnian Muslims and ethnic cleansing campaigns to forge a “Greater Serbia”, and jailed him for life. Mladic was hustled out of the court minutes before the verdict for angrily shouting, “This is all lies, you are all liars!” The outburst occurred after Mladic returned to the courtroom from what his lawyers described as a visit to the bathroom, then a blood pressure test which held up proceedings. The U.N. Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) found Mladic guilty of 10 of 11 charges, including the slaughter of 8,000 Muslim men and boys at Srebrenica and the 43-month siege of the Bosnian capital Sarajevo, in which more than 10,000 civilians were killed by shelling, mortar and sniper fire. The killings in Srebrenica of men and boys after they were separated from women and taken away in buses or marched off to be shot amounted to Europe’s worst atrocity since World War Two. “The crimes committed rank among the most heinous known to humankind, and include genocide and extermination as a crime against humanity,” Presiding Judge Alphons Orie said in reading out a summary of the judg-

ment. “Many of these men and boys were cursed, insulted, threatened, forced to sing Serb songs and beaten while awaiting their execution,” he said. Mladic had pleaded not guilty to all charges. Skin that is exposed to volcanic ash can become hot and itchy as a result of substances found in the ash. “ We are also asking that people in the area to have glasses, hats and such at the ready so as to avoid direct exposure to the ash will likely fall again soon”, explained Arimbawa. BPBD Karangasem has masks at the ready and some residents of KBR III have already been given masks in anticipation of further eruption of Mount Agung. If there is a shortage we will acquire additional masks. “At the disaster post warehouse there are disaster preparedness bags that contain a raincoat, mask and flashlight that will be reserved for children, since they do not understand much about safety precautions”, explained Arimbawa. Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG)’s Volcanic Subdivision Head for Eastern Region, Kamil Devy Syahbana, confirmed that there had in fact been ash coming out of Mount Agung. After receiving reports about the ash-fall, officers from the PVMBG went to see for themselves and found the reports ot be true. “There has in fact been volcanic ash-fall, but it remains to be quite converge on the ground”, Devy Syahbana. The latest data as of Wednesday (Nov. 22) showed that the number of evacuees in Bangli had not increased from the 124 that were there before the phreatic eruption of Mount Agung on Tuesday (Nov 20). Commander of the Bangli Mount Agung Disaster Response Post, Andy Pranoto, said that as of Wednesday: “no additional evacuees have arrived. The number of evacuees in Bangli remains at 124 people”, he explained. He said that based on the 1992-1993 agreement, Myanmar would accept those who could present identification documents issued to the Rohingya by Myanmar governments in the past. Those include the currently distributed national verification cards, as well as now-withdrawn “white cards”, as well a s receipts the Rohingya received when returning their “white cards”, he said. Diplomats and aid workers have said the key elements of the deal will be the criteria of return and the participation of the international community, such as the United Nations refugee agency, in the process. Mentally ill woman secured by police after making tourists in Ubud uneasy

GIANYAR — Gianyar’s Municipal Police secured a 60 yearol mentally ill woman named Jero Lasia on Tuesday (Nov. 21) after she had been rampaging around Ubud Palace making local residents and tourists uneasy. The mentally ill woman from Ubud Kelod attempted to resist the police’s efforts to secure her. Operations officer of Gianyar Municipal Police, Wayan Nasta, explained that last Tuesday Jero Lasia left her house located to the south of the headman of Ubud’s office. She headed to the heart of Ubud, wandering around Ubud Palace. “Jero Lasia was carrying used clothes which she then spread out on the sidewalk annoying passing tourists”, said Nasta. This is not the first time that Lasia has disturbed tourists in Ubud, explained, Officer Wayan Nasta. Occasionally she has been known to scream hysterically thus disturbing people in the heart of Ubud. “Her acts have disturbed public order. Moreover, she has done so near the Ubud Palace which is crowded with tourists”, he explained. Having received information about Jero Lasia having disturbed tourists and residents around the Ubud Palace, the headman of Ubud reported the incident to the Gianyar Municipal Police. “After receiving the report, we went to Ubud to secure Mrs. Lasia”, said Officer Nasta. Wayan Nasta, who is known for being gifted at dealing with mentally ill people, explained that when he first approached Jera Lasia she recoiled and then tried to fight back when the officers took her hand. “ She then ran amuck, but we gradually persuaded her to come with us”, he said. While running amuck, Jero Lasia screamed hysterically ignoring her son who had joined the security team. Her son told the officers to ignore her screaming and they gradually persuaded her to get into the Gianyar Municipal Police vehicle. The elderly widow was taken directly form Ubud to the Bangli Mental Hospital (RSJ) for treatment. Wayan Nasta added that Jero Lasia had been secured by the Municipal Police last year due to similar disturbances. Lasia’s menatl illness he added was brought on after the death of her husband. “When her husband died, she immediately became very stressed”, explained Officer Nasta. (kmb35)

When Suwiantara was 17 years old, he started learning to make furniture like tables, chairs cuboards and the like. “ I used to be able to make big pieces like cupboards, but now that my condition has made me weaker I

just work on small products’ he explained. The Social Agency provided Suwiantara with tools to work, however despite being quite talented, he does not have any capital, so he just works when he gets orders. “ I get my materials from other people and only receive a salary of what people pay, so the amount is uncertain”, he said. Due to the economic constraints, he is unable to purchase medications or walking sticks. Last Tuesday, however he was given walking sticks by humanitarian volunteers. Accompanied by his parents,

Suwiantara said that he hopes to receive medical assistance at his home because he does not have a health insurance (KIS / BPJS) card and he cannot afford to pay for medical treatment. “I am not strong enough to walk”, he explained. His legs have wounds that need to be treated properly. Hamlet chief of Tengah, Made Ardiana, who came to Suwiantara’s house to accompany the humanitarian volunteers, acknowledged the condition of his fellow hamlet resident saying that he proposed that Suwiantara get a KIS card so that he can receive optimal medical treatment. Mount Agung’s puff of smoke not expected to disturb tourism

DENPASAR —Grey smoke from Mount Agung caused by a phreatic eruption emerging from Mount Agung is not expected to interfere with tourism in Bali even though previous volcanic activity did lead to a decrease in the number of tourists arriving to Bali. This was especially noticeable after the alert level for the highest mountain in Bali was raised to level IV warning. “There was a 15 percent decrease in tourist arrivals from August to September”, said the Head of Bali Tourism Office, A.A. Gede Yuniartha Putra, in Denpasar, on Wednesday (Nov. 22). According to Yuniartha, this decline in number was probably due to many tourists delaying their trip to Bali due to the threat of an eruption by Mount Agung. Delays, however are not the same as cancelations, he added. “Cancelling is not so easy and it means not getting a refund. So in my opinion, many tourists just delay their trip but it mean a decrease in the number of visitors”, he explained. There was in fact a 25 percent increase in the number of visitors this September, said Yuniartha, compared to the previous year. All parties- including the mass media, are therefore being asked to be careful about how they approach this topic and not be excessive in their coverage. On average there are 15,000 tourists who come to Bali every day, which is 450,000 a month -multiplied by two months, is 900,000. So, we may very well exceed the target”, he said. Meanwhile, Deputy Governor of Bali, I Ketut Sudikerta, is appealing to the public to remain calm regarding the puffs of grey smoke. A volcanic eruption cannot be avoided and it is not known for sure when it will happen. “I therefore, invite everyone to remain calm an careful with regards to the alert levels for Mount Agung. Our disaster team has been alerted and is monitoring progress at the location”, he said. Regarding the possibility of people being evacuated again, Sudikerta admitted that he had coordinated with the Head of Logistics Agency, Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Bali and regent of Karangasem related to the availability of supplies and has scheduled direct monitoring of evacuation sites. LOS ANGELES - Backstreet Boy singer Nick Carter on Wednesday denied an allegation that he raped a teen pop singer 15 years ago, saying he was “shocked and saddened” by the accusation. Melissa Schuman, who was a member of girl group Dream in the late 1990s, claimed in a lengthy blog post earlier this month that Carter forced her to have oral sex and raped her in 2002 when she was 18 and he was 22. Reuters was unable to independently confirm Schuman’s allegation. “I am shocked and saddened by Ms. Schuman’s accusations,” Carter, now 37, said in a statement that was emailed to media outlets. “Melissa never expressed to me while we were together or at any time since that anything we did was not consensual.

Police arrested a man in Berlin on Monday suspected of receiving the 86 stolen items, which include Lennon’s last diary that ended on the day he was shot and killed in New York on Dec. 8, 1980. “This day contains the entry that on that morning John Lennon and Yoko Ono had an appointment with Annie Leibovitz to take a photo which I think is world famous,” Berlin prosecutor Michael von Hagen told a news conference. The Leibovitz portrait of a naked Lennon curled up around Ono on their bed ran on the January 1981 cover of Rolling Stone magazine. Hagen rejected suggestions that Ono might have lent or given away the objects: “The diaries especially ... were also treated by Yoko Ono as something sacred. And the idea that she would have given away three original diaries, especially the one that ends on the very day Lennon died, can be completely ruled out.” Carsten Pfohl, head of property crime for Berlin police, said investigators had found one of the pairs of glasses and a receipt in Lennon’s name hidden in the trunk of the car of the accused on Monday. Police suspect that the items were stolen by Ono’s former driver and then taken to Turkey and were only brought to Berlin in 2013 or 2014. Another suspect lives in Turkey, they said. (rtr)

Mugabe granted immunity, assured of safety in Zimbabwe -sources

HARARE - Zimbabwe’s former president Robert Mugabe was granted immunity from prosecution and assured that his safety would be protected in his home country as part of a deal that led to his resignation, sources close to the negotiations said on Thursday. Mugabe, who had led Zimbabwe from independence in 1980, stepped down on Tuesday after the army seized power and the ruling party turned against him. Emmerson Mnangagwa, the former vice president sacked by Mugabe earlier this month, is set to be sworn in as president on Friday. A government source said Mugabe, who is 93, told negotiators he wanted to die in Zimbabwe and had no plans to live in exile. “It was very emotional for him and he was forceful about it,” said the source, who is not authorised to speak on the details of the negotiated settlement. “For him it was very important that he be guaranteed security

to stay in the country...although that will not stop him from travelling abroad when he wants to or has to,” the source said. Mugabe resigned on Tuesday as parliament began a process to impeach him, sparking wild celebrations in the streets. His rapid downfall after 37 years in power was triggered by a battle to succeed

him that pitted Mnangagwa against Mugabe’s much younger wife Grace. “The outgoing president is obviously aware of the public hostility to his wife, the anger in some circles about the manner in which she conducted herself and approached ZANU-PF party politics,” a second source said. “In that regard, it became necessary to also assure him that his whole family, including the wife, would be safe and secure.” Mugabe had clung on to power for a week after the military intervened. He angered many Zimbabweans when he did not resign in a televised address on Sunday as many had anticipated. The government source said the tipping point for him was the realisation that he would be impeached

and ousted in an undignified way. “When the process started, he then realised he had lost the party,” the source said. Mugabe will receive a retirement package that includes a pension, housing, holiday and transport allowance, health insurance, limited air travel and security. The ageing former president was “rugged and drained” by events of the past week and may travel to Singapore for medical checks in the coming weeks, the source said. He had been due to leave for Singapore in mid-November before the military put him under house arrest. Mugabe has maintained that he leads a frugal life and that he does not possess any wealth or properties outside Zimbabwe But last month a legal quarrel

between Grace and a Belgian-based businessman over a $1.3 million diamond ring lifted a veil on the wealthy lifestyle of Mugabe and his wife, nicknamed “Gucci Grace” for her reputed dedication to shopping.
