MANGUPURA - Tourism sector, especially hotels industry, is expected to pioneer the use of Balinese language and script as one of the added value of Bali tourism. The tourism industry in Thailand, for example, has done it. Even, Switzerland has used four languages to draw the intrigue of tourists. “It will be remarkably lovely if a variety of information in hotels use Balinese script, Balinese language and English. Other countries have done so because aside from being unique and giving added value, this measure can encourage the pride of its people,” said the humanist I Gede Ardika. The former Minister of Culture and Tourism said that he was concerned about the younger generation who were unable to speak the local language familiarly. Stakeholders and the public were expected to maintain, preserve, use and develop the local language as well as other cultural heritages so they would not be undergoing extinction. “The wealth of art and culture has widely inspired the creative economic
activities that had supported the Bali tourism,” he said. Meanwhile, the Regent of Gianyar Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati in the seminar was also sad to see the shift in the concept of cultural tourism that must actually be sustainable, community-based, and on a small scale. “Now, the industry has grown bigger. CAIRO - Egypt’s army chief, seeking to defuse street protests that have left 37 dead, promised a swifter handover to civilian rule but failed to convince thousands of hardcore demonstrators, some of whom battled police through the night. One man was killed in clashes early on Wednesday in the second city Alexandria, one of several towns that saw unrest. Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, who has run the ruling military council since mass protests unseated his long-time ally Hosni Mubarak in February, made a faltering televised address on Tuesday in which he promised a civilian president would be elected in June, about six months sooner than planned. Confirming Egypt’s first free parliamentary election in decades will start on Monday, the council also accepted the resignation of the civilian prime minister and his cabi-

Relatives of 57 people killed in the Philippines’ worst political massacre called on authorities Wednesday to speed up the suspects’ trial as they marked the second anniversary of the murders. Leaders of a feared clan are on trial over the killings but the proceedings have become bogged down, while another 100 suspects -- including other members of the Ampatuan family clan, policemen and soldiers -- are on the run. Converging on a remote hill in the southern province of Maguindanao, where the massacre took place, families of the dead offered flowers and

Underscoring the fragile security in the area and the sensitivity of the case, police said they found and defused two bombs left by the side of the highway leading to the solemn site. The devices were not strong enough to badly hurt or kill but were intended to send a warning, they said. “It has been two years and there is still no justice. Some (suspects) have been arraigned (brought to court) but others are still out there,” said Reginald Dalmacio, 28, brother of one of the victims. While leaders of the Ampatuan clan, who are accused of orchestrat-
ing the killings, have been charged, their trial is still in its early stages and prosecutors fear it could take years more before anyone is punished. Relatives of the victims have complained that witnesses are being killed, intimidated or bribed. Philippine politics is well known for its violence, but the events of November 23, 2009 in a remote farming area in Maguindanao shocked the world. Andal Ampatuan Jnr allegedly led a group of about 100 gunmen in stopping a convoy of cars carrying relatives of a rival political candidate, their lawyers and accompanying journalists, then massacring them.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Indonesia police arrest 2 in orangutan killings Associated Press
JAKARTA — Two Indonesian plantation workers have been arrested for allegedly killing at least 20 endangered orangutans and proboscis monkeys as a means of “pest control,” police said Wednesday. Col. Antonius Wisnu Sutirta, a police spokesman, said the suspects admitted to chasing down the primates with dogs, then shooting, stabbing or hacking them to death with machetes. The men allegedly told authorities the owners of several palm oil plantations on Borneo island, eager to protect lucrative crops from being raided, offered $100 for every orangutan killed and $20 for every long-nosed proboscis monkey. If found guilty of violating the Law on National Resources Conservation, they face up to five years in jail, Sutirta said. Indonesia — home to 90 percent of the orangutans left in the wild — has lost half of its rain forests in the last half century in its rush to supply the world with timber, pulp, paper and, more recently, palm oil. The remaining 50,000 to 60,000 apes live in scattered, degraded
forests, putting them in frequent, and often deadly, conflict with humans. A study published this month in the journal PLoSOne said villagers in Kalimantan, the Indonesian portion of Borneo, admitted to slaughtering at least 750 orangutans over a yearlong period — a figure much higher than previously thought. Some were killed to protect crops, others because villagers thought the animals were dangerous. A much smaller number were hunted for their meat, the survey showed. “The simple conclusion is that orangutans will be hunted to extinction unless someone stops the killings,” said Erik Meijaard, main author of the study. “It’s a blatant infringement of Indonesia’s conservation laws,” he said. “I really hope that both the perpetrators and the plantation
managers who ordered the killings will be punished accordingly.” The two men were arrested Sunday at their homes in Muara Kaman, a village in east Kalimantan, after the bones of several orangutans and proboscis monkeys were recovered. Yaya Rayadin, a researcher from Mulawarman University in the Kalimantan town of Samarinda, said the bones were scattered in 15 different places and that tests in his lab indicated the deaths were violent. Most had hack marks on their skulls, jaws and ribs, he said. Rayadin said he believes many more people were involved in the killings. He said he first told authorities in 2008 that palm oil plantations were offering rewards to locals who slaughtered orangutans or monkeys — with pictures or video offered as proof — but that until now no action had been taken. “The fact police have arrested two people is a sign of remarkable progress,” he said. “But the main thing now is to find a way to protect the orangutans that are still alive.”

JAKARTA - The House of Representatives (DPR) on Tuesday approved Bank Indonesia (the central bank/ BI)`s operational budget proposal for 2012 and hoped the realization of receipt budget next year would exceed its target. At a meeting led by Deputy Chairman of the House Commission XI Harry Azhar Aziz, Bank Indonesia Governor Darmin Nasution proposed a receipt budget of Rp27.37 trillion and expenditure budget of Rp5.23 trillion for 2012. The 2012 receipt budget is higher than that of 2011 when the figure was set at Rp22.63 trillion with the expected realization of Rp25.4 trillion. Meanwhile, the 2012 expenditure budget is smaller than that of 2011 when the figure stood at Rp5.27 trillion with the expected realization of Rp4.33 trillion. Darmin said the expenditure budget would be used among others for salaries and other income estimated at Rp2.13 trillion, human resources development and maintenance Rp1.54 trillion, logistics Rp537 billion, supporting activities Rp346 billion, taxes Rp428 billion and unpredictable expenses Rp249 billion. Last year, the expenditure budget for salaries stood at Rp1.99 trillion, human resources development and maintenance Rp1.79 trillion and logistics Rp519.8 billion. NEW YORK — If you ever see Vince Gill shirtless at one of his concerts, you can likely place the blame on Sting. Bare-chested singing is a regular affair for the rocker, and when Gill was asked if he’d go shirtless for the pair’s CMT “Crossroads” special, Sting chimed in: “He will tonight. I’m going to encourage him.” “What a thought. You know I haven’t eaten in six weeks preparing for this gig because of this yardstick over here,” said Gill, looking at Sting before laughing: “Going to look like Laurel and Hardy up there.” “I’ve never been described as a yardstick. Is that a compliment?” asked Sting, joining in the laughter. The good vibes between the two translate onstage during the special, which will air on Thanksgiving at 8 p.m. and was pre-taped in September. The rock and country veterans had worked together once before, at the 2004 Grammy Awards in tribute to the Beatles. Both said linking up musically was easy because they
have “similar registers. “That’s always appealing — to find guys with guts enough to sing like girls,” said Gill, laughing again. The “Crossroads” series has featured collaborations from James Taylor and the Dixie Chicks to John Mayer and Keith Urban. This one-hour concert will have Gill and Sting performing hits like “Shape of My Heart,” ‘’Every Breath You Take” and “Don’t Let Our Love Start Slippin’ Away.” While the singers — who own a combined 36 Grammy Awards — say the collaboration was a comfortable one, they admit there were some challenges, too, when it came to covering the other’s songs. “When you immerse yourself in somebody else’s work and the more you get to know the song, you recognize these little inflections in the melody, which you hadn’t noticed the first time,” Sting said. “It demands a lot of respect, a lot of care and attention.” Gill knew it would be tough to cover Sting’s material, and he told the rock singer he’d need him to step in during some moments.

Nolan told the British film magazine that the prologue is “basically the first six, seven minutes of the film” and will serve as “an introduction to Bane, and a taste of the rest of the film.” (Representatives for the movie’s studio, Warner Bros., weren’t available for further comment or confirmation.)
Nolan also told Empire that “The Dark Knight Rises” would be set eight years after its predecessor. Curiosity will be “the largest and most complex piece of equipment ever placed on the surface of another planet,” said Doug McCuistion, director of NASA’s Mars exploration program. Ten feet long, 9 feet wide and 7 feet tall at its mast, Curiosity is about twice the size of previous rovers Spirit and Opportunity, weighs 1 ton and is loaded with 10 science instruments. Its formal name: Mars Science Laboratory, or MSL. In a spacecraft first, Curiosity will be lowered to Mars’ surface via a jet pack and a tether system similar to the sky cranes used by helicopters to insert heavy equipment in inacces-
sible spots on Earth. No bouncing air bags like those used for the Mars Pathfinder lander and rover in 1997 and for Spirit and Opportunity in 2004 — Curiosity is too heavy for that. It is the kind of precision landing that officials said will benefit future human explorers on Mars. The rover is scheduled to arrive at the mineral-rich Gale Crater next August, 8½ months after embarking on the 354-million-mile voyage aboard an Atlas V rocket. It’s a treacherous journey to Mars, and the road is littered with failures. In all, more than three dozen missions have aimed over the decades at the most Earth-like planet known, and fewer than half have succeeded. Of this flotilla, only one lander is still working on the dry, barren, cold surface — Opportunity — and only three craft still are observing the planet from orbit.
LOS ANGELES — Houdini the dog lived up to his name. The labshepherd mix, known as a crafty escape artist, was placed in a foster home by Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah. Despite his new owner’s best efforts to keep him close, the dog pushed an air conditioner out of a window and made his getaway. Fortunately the staff at Best Friends anticipated Houdini’s wandering ways and had outfitted his collar with a GPS tracking device. The device worked as promised, and Best Friends adoption manager Kristi Littrell found the errant dog in an overgrown lot in Kanab. About half of the pets that enter animal shelters each year are strays or lost animals, but the growing use of GPS technology may offer owners a new option for trying to track down roaming cats, missing dogs and other runaway pets. Several GPS devices are now being marketed that attach to collars and can be monitored by handsets, cellphones or computers with relative ease. Kristi Littrell, adoption manager at Best Friends, said Houdini was “the same color as the weeds” in the lot where she found him. “I would never have found him without the GPS device on his collar,” she added. Best Friends is still hoping to find a home for Houdini, and plans to give the GPS device to the new owners to help make sure that if he ever does get out again, he’ll be easily tracked down. “It’s great these devices are available to us now,” Littrell said. “They will undoubtedly help in a lot of cases where pets would otherwise not be found and returned home.” Best Friends uses a device called Loc8tor to keep track of Houdini. A handset picks up a signal from a tag attached to the pet’s collar and indicates which way to go to locate the tag. It’s designed to work within a range of 400 feet, though obstacles like walls and floors can reduce the range. Another GPS tracking device designed for pets is Tagg The Pet Tracker. Its fans include Jessica Vogelsang, a San Diego veterinarian who received a free Tagg for review on her blog, Dr. V at Pawcurious.com.

At 34.3 births per 1,000 among teens, that marks “a record low for the nation,” said the report. Teenage birth rates have been falling steadily since 1991, and are now 44 percent lower than they were 20 years ago. “I am
aware of no other social problem that has improved so dramatically over so many years,” said Sarah Brown, chief executive officer of The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy. “The magic formula of less sex and more contraception is responsible for this great good news.” Tough economic times, combined with some popular reality television shows that have
spotlighted the lives of teenage mothers, have also helped bring down the birth rates. “But at the end of the day, the thanks and admiration go to teens themselves,” said Brown. Women 20 to 24 years old also saw a drop of six percent in birth rate compared to 2009, with 2010’s rate of 90 per births per 1,000 making it the “lowest level ever reported for the United States.”

Massa advises Rubens Barrichello to retire FELIPE Massa has advised Rubens Barrichello to retire from Formula 1 if he needs to be searching for sponsors to secure a drive for next year. Williams driver Barrichello has no deal in place for the 2012 season ahead of the final race of the year in Brazil this weekend. Barrichello has admitted he is not facing his home race as his final F1 grand prix, as he is still hopeful he will secure a drive for next year, which will be his 20th season in Formula 1. Ferrari driver Massa, however, believes Barrichello has had what he labelled as an incredible career, and he reckons his compatriot should use
this weekend’s race to have a “proper” retirement from the sport. “I did give him an advice: to quit,” the Brazilian told TotalRace in an interview. “To me, Barrichello had an incredible career in F1: the driver who competed in most GPs and with many wins under his belt. It is a career most drivers would dream to have. “He raced for the best teams in F1. I haven’t advise him to quit because I feel he is old or something like that. But today in F1 there are 12 teams, and five or six are asking for money to give a seat. I think this is absurd. “My opinion, which I told him, is that I can’t see Barrichello searching
for sponsors to race after all he had achieved in F1. “I told him to quit and to use this last race to have a proper ending. The Pole said that, despite his recovery going well, it is too early to commit to the 2012 season. “Even if I’ve been working very, very hard over the course of the last few weeks, I came to the conclusion that I am not yet certain to be ready for the 2012 season,” said Kubica in a Renault statement. “I have called the team and I have informed them of the situation. This was a difficult decision to make, but it is the most reasonable one. “I also know that LRGP need to prepare for next year, and further extending deadlines would not have been the right thing to do. On a personal level, my recovery is still very encouraging and my doctors keep being impressed. I just need more time, as I want to be 100 per cent ready before I commit to anything driving related. “Finally, I regret not having been able to provide more news and not having appeared in the papers, and I thank my friends of the media for understanding that this has been the best way for me to cope with what has been the most difficult period of my life.” Renault said Kubica can now walk freely, and move his hand and elbow. The team also said that it “remains committed to helping Robert as much as possible in his recovery process.” Renault said it has a test car ready for
