Head of BKSDA, Sumarsono, stated the raid was done after complain was received from the public about the shop. At least 4 skulls and 37 pieces of skins from river crocodiles, 26 sanca snake skins and 7 wallets made of crocodile skin.

flashed victory signs. “We broke the back of the rebels. It was a trap. We gave them a hard time, so we are winning,” he said. “Take up arms today,” Saif told cheering supporters waiting to be given weapons. “Inshallah (God willing), we will attack the rats today.” Saif’s arrest had been reported both by rebels and the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, and his reappearance raised questions about the rebels’ credibility. Buleleng Govt asked to pay attention to gong kebyar GONG kebyar gamelan music born in Buleleng is not merely a medium of art. Gong kebyar has historical value because it is inseparable from the historical passage of our nation. To that end, Buleleng Government is asked to pay attention to the life and development of gong kebyar troupes in Buleleng. If the gong kebyar is ignored, Buleleng and the national history will turn incomplete. One of the oldest gamelan troupes in Buleleng is the Eka Wakya gamelan troupe at Paketan Hamlet, Paket Agung Village. When the gong kebyar developed around the 1930s, this troupe had wandered successfully up to outside Bali. A number of natural artists in Buleleng, Karangasem and Jembrana could foster this troupe. Pan Wandres from Jagaraga Village, for instance, once trained the troupe in 1939 and then continued by Gede Mendra from Paketan Hamlet in 1940. Meanwhile, in 1959 a number of great artists trained the troupe such as Ketut Supatra from Munduk Village, Gede Dasna from Munduk Village, I Gusti Bagus Nyoman Panji from Bungkulan, I Gusti Agung Kertha from Tegal
Cangkring, Jembrana, Made Kranca from Jagaraga, Gede Adnya from Sawan Village. Then, in 1982 appeared the names like Gede Utama from Sarimekar Village, Wayan Pasek Suasana from Karangasem, I Made Pasca Wirsutha from Paketan Hamlet and I Putu Tegeh Kertiasa from Paketan, too. A total of 12 artists mentioned above are gamelan artists of Buleleng whose names were inseparable from the triumph of gong kebyar gamelan music in Northern Bali until now. They were given awards and certificates by Eka Wakya gamelan troupe when commemorating its triumph on Sunday (Aug 21) night. Representative of Cudamani Art Studio, Ubud, Gianyar, Cokorda Raka Swastika, who attended the
awards presentation stated that gong kebyar of Eka Wakya gamelan troupe was one that always accompanied the presence of Bung Karno to Bali in the pastime. The presence of gamelan troupe had become a witness of the struggle of Bung Karno in preserving the art and culture of the archipelago. To that end, Cok Kertiyasa reminded the Buleleng Government to give serious attention to the existence of kebyar gong. Moreover, Buleleng was actually a forerunner to the birth of gong kebyar. “Guests coming to Bali are looking for the arts and culture, instead of looking for another. For that purpose, Buleleng Government should pay attention to the art troupes growing and developing in the society,” he appealed. (ole)

To prepare personnel in securing ahead of Idul Fitri, the ranks of Jembrana Police deployed troops in relation to the Ketupat Agung operation 2011 in the maneuver courtyard of Gilimanuk Harbor on Monday (Aug 22). Such deployment of troops was followed by personnel of Jembrana Police, National Armed Forces, Mobile Brigade, community protection as well as other relevant agencies getting involved in securing the homecoming flows of Idul Fitri. This condition was highlighted by the Chief of Jembrana Police and he asked in order it could be addressed quickly so as not to disrupt the homecoming flows. In response to this matter, Sudhiarsa directly made coordination and the demolition of levy post was no longer using manpower but heavy equipment or bulldozer so that it could be accomplished faster. “I do hope it can be completed this evening,” he said. In addition, various other facilities had also been renovated. After monitoring the condition ahead of this year’s Idul Fitri, Chief of Jembrana Police said that his party had alerted 2/3 of existing personnel to be stationed in five posts from Pangyangan to Gilimanuk. Regional leaders asked to check readiness of tourist objects Jakarta (Bali Post)—
Minister of Culture and Tourism, Jero Wacik, sent a circular letter to regional leaders including governors, regents and mayors to check the readiness of tourist object in the respective region in the face of this year’s Idul Fitri holiday. “I have written to regional leaders to check and ensure the readiness of tourist object in their regions in welcoming the Idul Fitri feast day,” said Wacik after making site inspection to Ragunan Zoo and Indonesia Miniature Park (TMII) in Jakarta, Monday (Aug 22). Wacik said the regional leaders were expected to have repaired and re-checked the tourist destinations in the region, especially at vulnerable points to tourists. According to Wacik, the period of Idul Fitri feast day was a good opportunity for the region including hoteliers and restaurateurs to increase their incomes. “I appeal the hoteliers, restaurateurs and operators of tourist objects not to differentiate services to foreign tourists and domestic tourists,” he said. Restaurateurs were asked to maintain the hygiene of food that would be served to their guests. Additionally, the operators of coastal, lake, and other marine tourism should always alert their lifeguards to anticipate the occurrence of accidents. Likewise, he requested the op-
erators of tourist object to pay attention to the capacity of destination so they would not overload that potentially resulted in hazard to visitors. “I also hope that tourism employees including hotels and restaurants will not take day-off for two weeks during the Idul Fitri holidays to provide optimum services to community,” he said while appealing people to also check their readiness to face the holiday including readiness of vehicle and health. Government estimated that money in circulation would reach IDR 61 trillion during the Idul Fitri feast day. “The money as much as IDR 61 trillion will circulate during the Idul Fitri holidays and this suggests the holiday period is able to generate the people’s economy extraordinarily,” explained the Minister of Culture and Tourism. The Mekepung which could become tourism attraction in Jembrana Regency
Makepung, buffalo race à la Jembrana Negara (Bali Post)—
The tradition of agrarian society of Jembrana such as makepung or buffalo race is inherent in Jembrana Regency. It is not only an opportunity to showcase the racing buffalo, but it also evolves into a prestige among the region of West and East Ijo Gading. The most prestigious regular annual event today is the Regent Cup. Earlier, in a year there were more than two competitions and the most prestigious was the Governor Cup. However, since 2009, the event held since the administration of Governor IB Mantra was abolished by the province. As a matter of fact, it was the prestige of the tournament sought by the owners of buffalo races. Despite competing for grand prize, in truth it is not comparable to the cost of caring and training their buffaloes. The passion for racing at the racecourse and prestige of the area are more important than the prize. Based on information of the Jembrana Education, Cultural and Tourism Agency, makepung is once included in the 12 rare arts in the effort to the inventory and development of native art and culture to Jembrana. This inventory mentions the buffalo race attraction is estimated to have started around 1920s. Unfortunately, it does not mention where this attraction first appeared. Since then, the buffalo race has developed from generation to generation in Jembrana society having nearly 90 units of subak organization. The buffaloes used to pull a cart in transporting rice were very familiar and easily found among
the local peasants at that time. As consequence, the population of buffaloes in Jembrana was in large number. Allegedly, the buffalo race has grown along with the Jegog art at ancient villages in Jembrana that have adequately extensive rice field area such as Sangkar Agung, Dauh Waru, Sebual, Mendoyo, Lateng, Kaliakah and Baluk. Formerly, territory of these villages was dominated by rice field and had a very good irrigation. At some villages, it was very easy to encounter Jineng (rice granary with seating place on lower part), buffaloes and buffalo-drawn carts. Those buffaloes and carts were used for the conveyance of agricultural products either rice or crops as the rice fields were quite wide. Rich farmers definitely had 2-5 hectares of farmland and would have buffaloes for transportation. They were transporting their rice hand in hand from the fields to rice barn. Some of them were racing each other to make it faster and the yields could be immediately transported out. This tradition then kindled the birth of buffalo race or makepung. Nevertheless, there are several other stories mentioning about the embryo of buffalo race. One of them is the process of cultivating the farmers’ soil from plowing until leveling where farmers did it through mutual assistance with some buffaloes. On the sidelines of the works, farmers raced one other. However, such buffalo race was simpler and unlike the ones contested today. At that time, the jockey only rode the plow without
a cart and wheels. Buffalo race was only carried out in the area of wet rice fields. Therefore, it was commonly called makepung betenan or makepung lampit that literally means race in wetland or race by means of harrow drawn by buffaloes. This tradition remains survive at number of subak organizations such as at Peh Hamlet of Kaliakah Village, Negara and Manistutu. Group Head of West Jogading, Made Mara, not long ago said that buffalo race was now packaged into a tourist attraction. The conditions were then adjusted, from large cart to smaller and lean size for a single jockey. In Jembrana, the buffalo race was held annually in July to November. The most prestigious event was the Regent Cup initiated since IB Ardana served as the Regent of Jembrana. Meanwhile, Governor Cup launched during the reign of Governor Prof. IB Mantra had no longer been held since 2009. An event is divided into two groups, namely East Ijo Gading and West Ijo Gading. Ijo Gading itself is the name of a great river dividing the city of Negara. East and West show the origin of the group, where the West represents the area of west of the river (Melaya) and the East represent the area located in the east of the river (Mendoyo, Pekutatan and Jembrana). Each annual event involves some 500 pairs of buffalo. In Jembrana itself there are five locations of buffalo race circuit namely Kaliakah Village Circuit, Awen Village Circuit, Mertasari Village Circuit, Delod Berawah Village Circuit and Tuwed Village Circuit. TOKYO - Unpopular Prime Minister Naoto Kan will likely resign on August 30, his economics minister said on Tuesday, but who will succeed him as Japan confronts a nuclear crisis and a long list of economic difficulties remained up in the air. The race to become Japan’s sixth leader in five years was blown wide open on Monday when former foreign minister Seiji Maehara, 49, decided to run. That cut sharply into the chances of Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda, a fiscal conservative. The support base for the two men overlaps in the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) — and whoever is elected next week as leader of the party with control of the lower house will become prime minister. Japan’s new leader will have to grapple with a soaring yen that threatens exports, step up efforts to rebuild from the March earthquake and tsunami and end a radiation crisis at the Fukushima nuclear plant — all while trying to curb
public debt and cure the ills of a fast-aging society. But concerns run deep as to whether the next prime minister will fare any better than his predecessors in the face of a divided parliament and ruling party split by policies and personal feuds. “The chances of a stable government capable of doing the bold and decisive things needed to deal with the problems in Tohoku (northeast Japan) and revitalize Japan are very, very low,” said Columbia University professor Gerry Curtis. He suggested the next government could also be shortlived. Kan, whose voter support has sunk below 20 percent, pledged in June to step down after achieving certain tasks. With key bills expected to pass this week, the DPJ is

been living in self-imposed exile abroad to avoid a jail term. Japanese officials said Tokyo granted Thaksin a visa after receiving a request for assistance from the Thai government. Thaksin said his sister had “nothing to do” with his trip to Japan.
TEHRAN - Iran has begun moving machines that enrich uranium to an underground bunker near the holy city of Qom, a senior official said, a move likely to fan Western fears of an Iranian advance toward nuclear weapons capability. His announcement was a further sign of the Islamic state’s determination to press ahead with enrichment in defiance of international demands that it desist from such activity, which Tehran says will be for peaceful applications only. “Transferring Natanz centrifuges to Fordow (near Qom) is under way with full observance of standards,” Fereydoun AbbasiDavani told state broadcaster IRIB. “Fordow’s facilities are being prepared and some centrifuges have been transferred.” Iran announced in June that it would shift its production of higher-grade uranium from its main enrichment complex in the central city of Natanz to the subterranean site at Fordow. Iran, the world’s No. 5 oil exporter, denies Western accusations it is seeking to develop nuclear bombs, saying its enrichment program is meant solely to provide an alternative source of electricity or isotopes for medicine and
agriculture. Iran only disclosed the existence of Fordow to the U.N. nuclear watchdog in September 2009 after learning that Western intelligence agencies had detected the mountain site. Moving enrichment activity to the underground bunker could offer greater protection against any attacks by Israel or the United States, which have both said they do not rule out pre-emptive strikes to stop Iran getting nuclear weapons.
In Vienna, a senior Western diplomat criticized Iran’s move. “The announcement calls attention to Iran’s continuing refusal to abide by its international obligations, including the U.N. Security Council’s prohibition against Iran installing or operating any centrifuges,” the diplomat said. “Iran’s provocative behavior reinforces the need to fully implement international sanctions against Iran.”

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

SANTO DOMINGO - Hurricane Irene strengthened into a Category 2 hurricane as it swept north of the Dominican Republic on Monday and could hit the Southeast United States as a larger and more powerful storm during the weekend, forecasters said. The U.S. National Hurricane Center ’s five-day forecast showed the first hurricane of the 2011 Atlantic season swinging parallel to Florida’s east coast on Thursday for a possible landfall in North or South Carolina on Saturday. Irene, the ninth named storm of the busy 2011 Atlantic season, looks set to be the first hurricane to hit the United States since Ike savaged the Texas coast in 2008. It could also be the catalyst that the insurance industry has been seeking in its quest for across-theboard premium increases, in what already promises to be the costliest year in history for natural disasters around the globe. Authorities along the U.S. Atlantic seaboard, from Miami to New York, were closely watching Irene’s possible path, with at
least some computer forecast models showing it might even sweep up near New York City early next week. President Barack Obama was briefed about Irene while on vacation on the Massachusetts island of Martha’s Vineyard, White House officials said. At 11 p.m. EDT (0300 GMT) Irene had top winds of 100 miles per hour (160 km per hour) and was 100 miles east of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. Irene was expected to strengthen further into a Category 3 hurricane on the fivestep Saffir-Simpson intensity scale, with winds over 111 mph, before hitting the southeast U.S. coast by the weekend, the Miami-based hurricane center said. The storm was off the northern coast of the Dominican Re-

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who took an early gamble on the rebels and may now reap diplomatic benefits, called on the Gaddafi loyalists “to turn their back on the criminal and cynical blindness of their leader by immediately ceasing fire.” Late on Monday, Sarkozy spoke to Britain’s David Cameron by telephone about Libya, and they agreed to “pursue efforts in supporting the legitimate Libyan authorities as long as Colonel Gaddafi refuses to surrender arms,” a French statement read. The post will be available for the travelers between D-7 until D+7. ‘’We are preparing posts for travelers to support government on monitoring homecoming traffic during this Idul Fitri,” explained Director of Tokobagus.com Arnold Sebastian Egg and Remco Lupker on Tuesday. These monitoring activities will be held in several spots in Indonesia, from Aceh to Jayapura. Bali Today Plane passenger could increase up to 17% Antara
Denpasar – The officer of PT Angkasa Pura I in Ngurah Rai International Airport, predicted that the number of airplane passengers will increase 17% during the Idul Fitri Day. “Currently there is already some increase in the number of passangers,” said the General Manager of PT Angkasa Pura I, Purwanto, in Tuban on Tuesday, August 23, 2011. He said that all airlines already anticipate the increase by preparing 1,237 extra seats for domestic flights and 220 seats for the international one. There are three airlines that already gave the flight schedule. Purwanto said that the people shouldn’t be afraid to run out of tickets. The extra seats and flights are enough to accommodate the increasing number of passengers. He added that the airport authority has prepared Idul Fitri post to assist the passengers in any problems. He said he has so far trained around 200 would-be pilots in some flight schools in the country to meet demand during bridging period until the end of 2011. “We are optimistic the number of cadets could finish their training by the end of this year to reduce the number of foreign pilots in the company in line with his commitment to using local pilots to fly all the company`s planes,” he said. Emirsyah said the 23 new pilots have been ready to join Garuda. “They will follow advanced training for six months in type rating to adapt themselves to the types of aircraft they would fly,” he said. Emirsyah said Garuda has been cooperating with BIFA and STPI Curug in procuring pilots. BIFA has so far produced around 100 pilots with the Class One received by Garuda in March
2010. “The pilots of BIFA Class One and Two have already flown Garuda planes as first officers. The Class Three pilots meanwhile are still following a type rating training at Garuda Training Center,” he said. He said 75 people grouped in Class Five, Six and Seven are still following training at BIFA. “In 2011 we are expecting the delivery of 11 aircraft consisting of nine B-737-800NGs and two Airbus 330-200s. We have also even opened Makassar as the hub for Indonesian eastern regions to strengthen the company`s network to 15 cities around it,” he said. BIFA chief Robby Djohan said the cooperation with Garuda has gone for more than two years and has produced around 100 pilots. “We are proud to be part of the national flag carrier`s transformation program especially in supporting Garuda Indonesia realize its vision of becoming an increasingly competitive airlines,” he said.

Bukakak Ritual to Invoke Safety of Plants Bali has a variety of distinctive rituals to invoke safety of the farmer-owned plants. In the Badung and Tabanan region, local farmers often organize Nangluk Merana or pest prevention and mouse Ngaben cremation. Meanwhile, at the Giri Mas Customary Village, Sawan Subdistrict, people also hold a unique and matchless ritual in the so-called Ngusaba Uma or better known as the Bukakak procession. Thousands of residents, ranging from farmers to employees and officials organized the Bukakak ritual procession along the village and subak road. Most residents consisted of supporting devotees of Subak Temple and Giri Mas Dangin Yeh customary villagers, Sawan Subdistrict. The procession drew extensive attention of residents in Buleleng so that many residents from outside the Giri Mas Customary Village were also present to enliven the festive ceremony. From the morning, thousands of people had come down to the streets of the village. They were preparing themselves to carry the ritual paraphernalia called Bukakak. The procession of parading the Bukakak was really awaited by citizens, both those getting involved in the procession and those who only watched the procession. Bukakak was made from materials such as bamboo and young palm leaves. The Bukakak paraphernalia contained oblation and roasted suckling pig. The ingre-
dients themselves were then carried hilariously by local youth and followed by other citizens. Before carrying the ritual paraphernalia, teenagers and other villagers attended a purificatory ritual in order they could run the biennial procession successfully. Bukakak procession is indeed a tradition celebrated in a solemnity and delight through generations. It is conducted as a form of devotional offerings to Goddess Sri for the safety handed down to subak members and customary villagers of Mas Giri. As an agrarian society, the ceremony is certainly aimed at pleading for crops especially the rice plant that supports the life of local residents and those of other village could survive from the attack of pests and diseases. “We believe, by organizing this offering our rice and other crops can survive from the dangers of disease,” said Jero Mangku Subrata. To hold the ceremony, supporting devotees estimated to reach more than a thousand families paid a donation. Preparation of the ceremony had been made since last week. As other ceremonies, the Bukakak ritual was also preceded by a Melasti procession and then resumed with Ngusaba Uma, ngembang and picking up the deities. After the procession, it was held the Ngusaba Dalem Segara and peak of the ritual right on the full moon in the tenth
month of Balinese calendar and the procession ended with the implementation of Bukakak procession. Procession of the ritual was preceded by fetching the deities abiding in Gunung Sekar Temple. It is about 100 meters to the east of the Subak Temple. All paraphernalia including the Bukakak were paraded from the Subak Temple to Gunung Sekar Temple. From the Gunung Sekar the paraphernalia were then paraded back to a number of temples in the Sawan subdistrict such Sangsit Village Temple, Beji Temple and Beten Bekul Temple. In the meantime, the local residents had confidence that their plants would survive from plant disease as their regions had been passed through by the Bukakak procession. “Local villagers here believe that crops in the areas traversed by the procession would be fertile, so that many residents requested in order their plants could be trampled by the youth carrying the Bukakak,” said Jro Mangku Subrata. As the end of the series of Ngusaba Uma ritual, it was resumed with the closing ceremony. In the closing ritual, residents danced while delivering plaus oblation as an expression of devotion because they had successfully implemented the whole series of ceremony. (BTN/kmb)

BASE RUJAK: 6 tbsp tamarind pulp 1-cup palm sugar syrup 1tsp dried shrimp paste, roasted 6 bird’s eye chilies, left whole ½ tsp salt ½ cup water PREPARATION: Combine all ingredients in a heavy pan and bring slowly to the boil. SINGAPORE - Spot gold soared to an all-time high above $1,910 on Tuesday, scoring a record top for a fourth consecutive session, as persistent worries about global economic growth burnished bullion’s safe-haven appeal. The precious metal was headed for a seventh straight session of rise and a monthly gain of more than 16 percent, highest since September 1999. Spot gold gained 0.8 percent to strike an unprecedented $1,911.46 an ounce, before easing to trade flat at $1,897.05 by 2:26 a.m. EDT. U.S. gold rose 1.4 percent to a record high of $1,917.90, and retraced to $1,900.80. Investors are waiting for flash purchasing managers’ index (PMI) data for Germany, France and the euro zone later in the day, with a weak number likely to exacerbate fears about bailing out the bloc’s indebted peripheral states. “We are not hearing much good news out of Europe or the United States,” said Darren Heathcote, head of trading at Investec Australia. “The picture looks pretty bleak in the short term... For the time being investors are happy looking at gold as safe haven in these troubled times, and will continue to do so until we see something positive and sustainable.” On the chart, gold has been in
the overbought territory since early August, with the Relative Strength Index hovering about 83. Technical analysis suggested gold could pull back to $1,860 during the day, said Reuters market analyst Wang Tao. The Shanghai Gold Exchanges said it will raise trading margins on three of its gold spot deferred contracts to 12 percent from 11 percent starting August 26, and widen the daily trading limits to 9 percent from 7 percent. Shanghai gold T+D contract fell less than 2 yuan from a high of 391.85 yuan per gram at the news, but has since stabilized around 391 yuan, or $1,900.02 an ounce. Traders are eyeing potential hikes in U.S. gold futures margins. They were last raised on August 11 by 22 percent, triggering a correction in gold prices. But concerns about the world’s economic growth soon offset the impact of the margin hike, and gold embarked on another leg of record-setting rally just a week later. “Everyone says that gold has been rising too fast, beware, beware, beware!” said Ronald Leung,

SINGAPORE - Developing Asia needs to create more high quality jobs if the region is to sustain the rapid economic expansion seen over the past two decades, the Asian Development Bank said on Tuesday. “Asia has outstripped other regions in growth and employment creation since 1990,” ADB Chief Economist Changyong Rhee said at a press conference in Singapore. But “Asia still remains home to most of the world’s poor.” “I don’t want to downplay the importance of economic growth, but on the quality job front, progress has been less impressive,” he added. Citing figures compiled by the Manila-based development bank, Rhee said the two-thirds of workers in developing Asia, which excludes Japan, were employed in the informal sector in 2008, little changed from 1990. In India, the proportion of informal workers rose to 82 percent of the workforce, from 80 percent between 1991 and 2008. However, Thailand’s percentage of informal workers dropped to 54 percent in 2008 from 70 percent in 1990, while
Malaysia saw a drop to 22 percent from 31 percent over the same period. In contrast, informal workers made up 12 percent of the workforce in developing Europe in 2008, and 33 percent in Latin America and the Caribbean region. ADB said informal work is usually a sign of underemployment and lower incomes as well as the absence of social safety nets. The bank urged low-income Asian countries to make it easier for workers to move from rural to urban areas in search of higher-paying jobs, as well as support activities to increase productivity in the rural nonfarm sector. It also recommended extending basic levels of social protection to informal workers. Looking ahead, Rhee said Asia will be able to ride out the slowdown in the United States and Europe so long as there’s no repeat of the 2008 financial crisis. “We believe that Asian economic growth at this moment is robust and resilient enough to cope with a slowdown in the advanced economies unless this becomes a full-blown crisis which is very unlikely,” he said.

Figures released in the southern Chinese territory Monday showed inflation hit 7.9 percent year-on-year in July, the highest level since November 1995, when it stood at 8.4 percent. The hike, up from 5.6 percent in June, was driven largely by rises in rent and food prices as well as fees for overseas package tours thanks to the weakening US dollar, to which the HK dollar is pegged, the Census and Statistics Department said in a statement. BWC Capital Markets Chief Economist Daniel Chan told AFP he expects inflation to continue to worsen, rising easily above six
percent in the next few months on account of rental prices, food costs and the HK-US dollar peg. “Inflation will continue to rise in Hong Kong and the situation will worsen,” he said Tuesday. “In the past months, property prices have risen significantly, which has bumped up the price of housing rentals. This and soaring food costs will keep inflation at high levels.” Consumers should “brace themselves” as the city is “likely to see more price hikes in the coming months”, he added. Likewise, a government spokesman said in a press statement: “Inflation is likely to remain notable in the near term, on the back of still-elevated global food prices as well as higher domestic cost pressures. “The government will continue to monitor the movements of global food and commodity prices, and remain vigilant about the local inflation situation, particularly its impact on the lower-income people,” he added.

Kate Winslet escapes fire at Branson’s island home Associated Press Writer
LONDON — Guests including Academy Award-winning actress Kate Winslet escaped uninjured when fire destroyed Richard Branson’s Caribbean home during a tropical storm Monday, said the British businessman. The Virgin Group boss said about 20 people, including Winslet and her children, were staying in the eight-bedroom Great House on Necker, his private isle in the British Virgin Islands. Branson said he was staying in another property around 100 yards (meters) away with his wife, Joan and son Sam, 25. He said the fire broke out around 4 a.m. during a tropical storm with lightning and high winds, and Sam managed to help evacuate Winslet and other guests from the house. Tropical Storm Irene walloped the Virgin islands and headed towards Puerto Rico late Sunday and early Monday, strengthening into a hurricane Monday with winds of about 80mph (130 kph), according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. Branson said the guests, including his 90-year-old mother and his daughter Holly, 29, all managed to get out safely. “Kate Winslet, her boyfriend and her family were there and Holly and some of her friends were also staying,” Branson said. “My mother was there and they managed to get her out and she is fine.” Winslet’s spokeswoman, Sara Keene, confirmed the actress was unharmed. Branson said the house was “completely destroyed” and the fire was not
entirely out Monday. “My office was based in the house and I have lost thousands of photographs which is very sad,” Branson said. He said he planned to rebuild the house “as soon as we can.” “We’ll all stay here for the time being,” he said. “There’s a lot of damage and we won’t be able to stick it back together again right away.” Virgin said the cause of the fire was still being investigated but lightning was the likely culprit. Branson, 60, bought the island in the early 1980s and began building the Great House in 1982. He also has developed an exclusive eco-resort on the island showcasing renewable energy technology. Winslet, 35, shot to international stardom with her appearance opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in James Cameron’s “Titanic,” and sealed her reputation with a best actress Academy Award in 2009 for “The Reader.” She has two children, 10-year-old Mia and Joe, 7, from marriages to directors Jim Threapleton and Sam Mendes.

NEW YORK — Aretha Franklin is already a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but this fall, she’ll be honored by the hall once again, as part of its American Music Masters series. The Queen of Soul will be the subject of a week-long celebration by the hall and Case Western Reserve University. It kicks off Oct. 31, includes an all-day symposium and ends with an all-star tribute concert on Nov. 5. Performers for that show have yet to be announced. In a statement released Tuesday, the 69-year-old Franklin said she was “thrilled and delighted” to be honored and planned to take part in the festivities. Franklin returned to the concert scene this year after surgery for an undisclosed condition. Past honorees include Bessie Smith, Les Paul, Janis Joplin and Woody Guthrie.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Richard Hatch, the winner of the first season of “Survivor,” is claiming he’s “destitute” as he seeks a court-appointed lawyer to help him appeal a nine-month sentence for failing to settle his tax bill in his tax-evasion case. Filings in U.S. District Court in Providence made public last week show Richard Hatch believes he should be given free legal representation to fight the prison sentence handed down in March. Hatch, 50, of Newport, had been returned to prison for violating terms of his release from prison for failing to pay taxes on his $1 million winnings from the CBS reality show. U.S. Magistrate Judge Lincoln D. Almond is recommending Hatch be denied free legal counsel. He says the appeal is not “taken in good faith.” Hatch is appealing to the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston. The federal court in Rhode Island, however, is expected to rule on whether Hatch is entitled to free legal representation. In his handwritten court filing, Hatch says he is “financially destitute” and rejects assertions that his appeal is not in good faith and his own issues frivolous. Hatch also claims the Internal Revenue Service has yet to inform him how much he owes on his winnings from 10 years ago. He also says he has new evidence indicating the taxes are due to the government of Malaysia, where the first season was filmed, and not to the United States. He
says the U.S. Tax Court is reviewing that development. Hatch spent more than three years in prison for not paying taxes on “Survivor” winnings. He was released in 2009 and ordered to refile his 2000 and 2001 taxes and pay what he owed. Smith ruled he never did and returned him to prison. Hatch is behind bars at FCI-Morgantown in West Virginia. He is expected to be released in December.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — NASA’s humanoid robot has finally awakened in space. Ground controllers turned Robonaut on Monday for the first time since it was delivered to the International Space Station in February. The test involved sending power to all of Robonaut’s systems. The robot was not commanded to move; that will happen next week. “Those electrons feel GOOD! One small step for man, one giant leap for tinman kind,” Robonaut posted in a Twitter update. (All right, so a Robonaut team member actually posted Monday’s tweets under AstroRobonaut.) The four visible light cameras that serve as Robonaut’s eyes turned on in the gold-colored head, as did the infrared camera, located in the robot’s mouth and needed for depth perception. One of Robonaut’s tweets showed the view inside the American lab, Destiny. “Sure wish I could move my head and look around,” Robonaut
said in the tweet. Robonaut — the first humanoid robot in space — is being tested as a possible astronaut’s helper. The robot’s handlers at Mission Control in Houston cheered as everything came alive. The main computers — buried inside Robonaut’s stomach — kicked on, as did the more than 30 processors embedded in the arms for controlling the joints. “Robonaut behaved himself,” said deputy project manager Nicolaus Radford. “Oh, Robonaut definitely got an ‘A.’ He won’t be held back a grade, if that’s what you want to know.” “It was just very ex-
citing,” he said. “It’s been a long time coming to get this thing turned on.” The robot was delivered on space shuttle Discovery’s final flight. It took this long for the operating software to get up there, and for the astronauts to have enough time to help with the experimentOn Sept. 1, controllers will command Robonaut to move its fingers, hands and arms. “It’s been asleep for about a year, so it kind of has to stretch out a little bit,” Radford told The Associated Press. “Just like a crew member has to kind of acclimate themselves to zerogravity, our robot has to do a very similar thing, kind of wiggle itself and learn how it needs to move” in weightlessness. For now, Robonaut exists from the waist up. It measures 3 feet 4 inches tall and weighs 330 pounds. Each arm is 2 feet 8 inches long. A pair of legs currently are being designed and should be launched in 2013.

How Dogs Beat Doctors in Identifying EarlyStage Lung Cancer WITH a little training, your dog could have a promising future as a biochemist. A new study in the European Respitory Journal shows that dogs are better at sniffing out the early markers of lung cancer than the latest medical technologies at our disposal. Lung cancer is the second most frequent form of cancer in men and women across the United States and Europe, accounting for approximately 500,000 deaths per year. Part of the reason for the high mortality rate is that lung cancer is notoriously difficult to identify early. In many cases, the patient doesn’t show any symptoms and detection of the diseases happens by chance. If someone isn’t that lucky, the cancer is likely to have already progressed by the time it is found. The study investigated whether dogs could be trained to reliably identify specific volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are linked to the presence of lung cancer. The latest medical methods for identifying lung cancer VOCs are generally unreliable because there is a high risk of interference in the results, espe-
cially from the residuals of tobacco smoke, and the results can take a long time to process. Trained dogs were asked to sniff out a study group that included lung cancer patients, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients, and healthy volunteers. The dogs successfully identified 71 samples of lung cancer out of a possible 100. They also correctly detected 372 samples that did not have lung cancer out of a possible 400 — a 93% success rate. As impressive, the dogs were able to detect lung cancer markers independently from COPD and tobacco smoke – showing that Fido, unlike our latest technologies, can separate out lung cancer markers from the most confounding variables. The major takeaways from this study are twofold. First, thanks to the pooches, we now know for sure that there is an independent, stable marker for lung cancer, which in and of itself is a big step forward. Second, until our medical tech can get up to speed with a wet nose, dogs can add yet another remarkable ability to their resumes.

The flash drive for the 8GB iPhone 4 is being manufactured by a Korean company, one of the people said Tuesday, declining to name the company. Apple currently sources its flash drives from Japan’s Toshiba and South Korea’s
Samsung Electronics. The sources declined to be identified because the information has not been made public. Apple, which demands high levels of secrecy and security from suppliers and employees, declined to comment. Samsung also declined to comment. The existing iPhone 4 was first launched in June 2010 with 16 GB and 32 GB versions, with a white version added to the lineup in April. The 8GB version is expected to launch within weeks, the sources said. Some analysts said the cheaper

Zico on verge of taking charge of Iraq team Reuters
RIO DE JANEIRO - Brazil great Zico has agreed terms with Iraq to take charge as their coach for the 2014 World Cup qualifiers and is close to signing a contract. “Everything’s agreed, I and my lawyers have sent a draft contract there (to Iraq). It’s all ok as far as I’m concerned, all that remains is to sign the contract,” Zico told Reuters on Monday. The former Brazil midfielder will steer the 2007 Asian champions through the third round of the continent’s qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup finals. Iraq are in Group A with Jordan, China and Singapore for the stage that starts next month. Zico, hailed as the white Pele during his playing days, said the draft contained two options: to coach Iraq in the World Cup qualifiers or beyond until the finals in Brazil in 2014. “They are thinking of a longer project and I think we should tend towards 2014,” said Zico, who steered Japan to the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany. Zico, 58, said he was highly motivated by this new coaching opportunity and was not afraid of the violence in Iraq. “It’s the big challenge of my life. SOCHAUX, France - Sochaux have asked FIFA to act over Newcastle United’s pursuit of unsettled striker Modibo Maiga, the French Ligue 1 club said on Tuesday. “Sochaux sent a referral on Monday to FIFA asking that Newcastle United stop their contact with
Modibo Maiga, contractually bound to Sochaux until 2014,” said a statement on the club’s website (www.fcsochaux.fr). The Mali international, 23, refused to play in Sochaux’s last two Ligue 1 matches and the Europa League playoff game against Metalist Kharkov. He has also stopped attending training.
“The move comes after Sochaux twice formally but unsuccessfully asked the English club to end their actions,” the club statement added. Djokovic confident of regaining fitness for U.S. Open Reuters
MASON, Ohio - World number one Novak Djokovic was confident he would be fit enough to play in the U.S. Open despite a worsening shoulder problem that forced him to quit Sunday’s Cincinnati Open final against Andy Murray. Djokovic was looming as the overwhelming favorite to win the last grand slam of the year, starting in New York on August 29, but his preparations were thrown into disarray because of the niggling injury. Djokovic was in clear discomfort in Sunday’s final against Murray. The Serbian called for a medical time-out after losing the opening set 6-4 then threw in the towell when he fell 3-0 behind in the second set. His withdrawal immediately raised concerns about his prospects at the U.S. Open but he later said it was just a precaution and he expected to play at Flushing Meadows after a week of rest. “I am confident that I can recover and be ready for the U.S. Open,” he told reporters. “It’s unfortunate that I had to finish this
way. “I apologize to the tournament. I apologize to the people who came here today to watch the match. I really tried (but) it didn’t make sense for me to continue.” Djokovic has been heavily criticized in the past for quitting matches but the 24-year-old said it made no sense to continue against Murray. He service speed was below his normal standards and his groundstrokes were erratic and lacking power. In the first set alone, he made more than 20 unforced errors. “The reason (I retired) is shoulder pain. I just could not serve. I
served an average 90 miles per hour the first serve, and I could not play forehands,” he said. “I could have maybe played another couple of games, but what for? I cannot beat a player like Murray today with one stroke.” Djokovic, whose only previous defeat this year was to Roger Federer in the semi-finals of the French Open, won last week’s Masters event in Montreal and decided to back up in Cincinnati even though his body was already showing signs of wear and tear. “It has been there for about ten days,” he said.

Maracana workers end strike, World Cup work resumes Reuters
RIO DE JANEIRO - Construction workers refurbishing the Maracana stadium for the 2014 World Cup finals have ended their strike for better conditions, their union and the consortium in charge of the site said on Monday. The workers went on strike last Wednesday after a colleague was badly burnt and suffered leg injuries when an oil barrel with chemical residue exploded on site. Their union said the consortium in charge of the work agreed to most of the workers’ demands including improved security and pay. “We’re satisfied, that’s why we’ve returned to work today,” union leader Romildo Vieira told
Reuters. “Negotiations ended like this: the health plan will be only for the workers (at first) but we’re going to look into the possibility of extending it to their families. “The deadline to finish the work on the Maracana is December of next year. The days of stoppage won’t delay the work. If necessary we’ll work more hours,” Vieira added. He said there could be up to 3,000 men involved in the work over that period of time. At present there are 2,000 working in three shifts. The work on the stadium, set to hold Confederations Cup matches in 2013 and expected to stage the World Cup final a year later, are estimated will cost about one billion reais ($630 million).

Yamaha: Lorenzo needs to win Indianapolis GP JORGE Lorenzo needs to win this weekend’s Indianapolis Grand Prix if he is to stand any chance of defending his MotoGP world title, according to his Yamaha team manager Wilco Zeelenberg. Lorenzo, who lies second in the title race, has won only twice this year and saw the gap to Casey Stoner increase to 32 points as the Honda rider took his sixth victory of 2011 at Brno last time out. Zeelenberg is adamant that with only seven races remaining, his charger must begin reducing the gap immediately. “If we want to win the world championship, we need to win races and start beating Casey. It’s going to be a big challenge, but we’re ready for it,” he said. World champion Lorenzo won at Indianapolis two years ago and believes that the slow twisty nature of the circuit will play to the strengths of his Yamaha, which is renowned as having the best-handling chassis in MotoGP. “Indy is a track I really enjoy. I treasure wonderful mo-
ments like the podiums in 2008 and 2010, and my victory in 2009 wearing Captain America’s helmet,” said the 24-year-old Spaniard. “I am now in good shape and am ready to regain the ground we lost in Brno, where a mistake put a distance between Casey and I. I hope the good energy I feel in this track will still help us to fight for the title. I am really looking forward to going back to the US and riding my M1.”

Force India has better car says Mallya Force India may be unlikely to repeat its starring Belgian Grand Prix pole position performance at Spa this weekend, but team principal Vijay Mallya has no doubts the outfit has a much stronger car on its hands right now. Giancarlo Fisichella caused a major upset in 2009 when he delivered pole position and battled Kimi Raikkonen for victory, at a time when Force India’s car was optimised for low-drag circuits. Since then the team has worked hard on ensuring its challengers are suited to all types of tracks. And although that means it will not be perfect for Spa, Mallya believes the outfit is in much better position overall. “I always enjoy coming to Spa. Not only is it an evocative and historic venue, it’s also the scene of our greatest success to date and I have many happy memories of our podium two years ago,” Mallya said. “The big difference this year is that we arrive at the Belgian Grand Prix with a car that is much more complete. In the past our great strength was straightline speed, but the car is now strong in all areas. The proof of that can be seen in our recent results with one car in Q3 at the last four races and 14 points from the last two. “So we enter the second half of the season in high spirits.
The drivers are pushing each other hard and are extremely motivated. The car is delivering good performance and we are taking the fight to the big teams. It was hard to imagine we would be in this position after our slow start to the year, but I never stopped believing. When you consider how competitive Formula 1 is, everyone in the team can be proud of where we are. “We’re well aware there is much hard work ahead to maintain this and we still have a big task facing us in the constructors’ championship. But following the August break we come back refreshed and ready to deliver again this weekend.” Force India is just nine points behind Sauber in the constructors’ championship, and Adrian Sutil believes its recent step forward in form can help it close the gap further. “I think we can have another competitive weekend because the last couple of races have shown what we are capable of. We seem to have a car that is working well everywhere and our qualifying and race pace has been strong. We just need to keep up the momentum and keep picking up the points,” he said. Paul di Resta added: “Spa is a track that has historically been strong for us. And our recent form gives us every reason to believe we can carry on where we left off in Hungary. We know our competitors won’t have stood still, but we’re still pushing hard with development and determined to get as much performance from the car before the focus shifts to next year.”
