“A sub-branding to support Wonderful Indonesia is needed. For example, there is Bali Shanti at Wonderful Indonesia. The Wonderful will be strong if there is a strong support underneath. The strengthening of the great ten is a must to

support the Wonderful Indonesia,” said the Executive Director of Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) Badung I Made Sulasa Jaya in Focus Group Discussion (FGD) “Wonderful Indonesia” in Badung Government Office on Wednesday, June 22. According to Sulasa, there are three things that are needed to be considered in branding the Wonderful Indonesia. The first is commitment; in this case, the commitment of the

current government is very clear. The huge amount of fund for tourism promotion shows the commitment of Indonesian Government on tourism. “The second is structure. The regulation to support tourism must be clear. The central government cannot work by themselves and for that reason; there must be support from the other part of the government. So, the structure must be clear,” he added. The third one is the human resources. As tourism practitioners, he appreciated the appointment of Aref Yahya as the Minister of Tourism. Sulasa thinks that Arief has the ability to manage Indonesian tourism. “The Regent of Badung must

play his part in managing the tourism in Badung so it can develop properly,” he explained. Meanwhile, the Secretary General of PHRI Badung Gede Sukarta appreciated the policy of the government in promoting tourism. However, the government also must give feedback on it for example if there is news about one of the tourism destination, the government must give news for the visitors. “For that reason, there is a need of a consultant to handle the negative issues striking tourism sector. This is a common thing because the competition in tourism is very tight,” he added.

Sukarta said that currently, the government is not actively promoting Bali. The one who is doing it is the practitioners or the businessmen. “For example is my hotel. Annually, we use up to 300 million rupiah for promotion alone. The government maybe doesn’t know it so the government must use their funding to support our promotion,” he explained. The cooperation between the government and the businessmen must be very solid. Both sides must work together to develop tourism in Indonesia through Wonderful Indonesia. “The cooperation must be intensified so we can work together,” he said.(kmb32)

SINGARAJA - Gunung Nona motor vessel from Sapeken Island experienced a technical problem in the waters of the Java Sea. An examination was performed by the crews. Finally they found if the axis of the vessel was broken. The vessel originally headed for Kampung Baru Singaraja, even got trouble to moor at the edge of the pier. Condition of the Gunung Nona fishing boat stagnated at 19 miles from the nearest mainland. Vessel crews along with passengers were frightened in the middle of the sea. Rescue effort of passengers was carried out by two crewmembers. They put the boat down to look for help hoping there

were fishermen around the vessel. Luckily, fate of the crews along with passengers did not find any accident. They tried to mutually calm down in the middle of the sea. Khairil, 45, skipper of the Gunung Nona motor vessel, finally could moor the vessel at fish landing port (PPI) at Sangsit village. Initially the vessel transported fish catch to be sold to Kam-

pung Baru, Singaraja. With three crews and 23 passengers on board the vessel sailed at 16:00, Monday (Jun. 20). “We began to suspect because the vessel suddenly went unbalanced. Precisely early Tuesday when arriving in the Java Sea the vessel was damaged. Crews went down to check the condition of vessel. In fact, the axis of vessel broke and was not known what caused it. We also carried the passengers, whereas they were about to get off in Singaraja to continue their journey to Denpasar,” he said, Wednesday (Jun. 22). To prevent from unwanted incidents, the crews were forced to look for help by using lifeboat. A fisherman was seen from a distance. However, the fish-

erman asked for help even escaped as if he was afraid. Ultimately, skipper called a friend on Sapeken Island. Two other vessels then came to help the crews and passengers. “Thankfully, two vessels came to help around 10:00 (Wednesday—Ed). All the passengers were evacuated to PPI Sangsit,” he explained. The damaged vessel was then towed by using other vessel. Fish owner is estimated to suffer losses reaching tens of millions because about 300 kg of fish aboard died and perished due to sailing for a few days at sea. “Food aid is given by SAR team. We have not eaten for more than a day. Our drinking water stock aboard has run out. Gratefully we are rescued on the high seas,” said Khairil. (kmb34)

Livestock Agency checks pesticides alleged to be counterfeit

SINGARAJA - Complaints of grape growers at Banjar village related to the circulation of pesticides alleged to be counterfeit gets serious response from the Buleleng Agriculture and Livestock Agency. To ensure the problem, the agency comes down to discover the complaint of farmers. The agency will find out the solution so that farmers can get pesticides with good quality. The Head of the Buleleng Agriculture and Livestock Agency, Nyoman Swatantra, amid the opening of the Twin Lakes Festival (TLF) at Lake Buyan, Pancasari village, Sukasada, Wednesday (Jun. 22), said that so far his agency has not received any complaints from farmers regarding the allegation of counterfeit pesticide trafficking. However, the agency

has often found the habit of farmers tending to be less careful in buying pesticides to eradicate the pest attacking their grapevines. For instance, farmers may not be attentive to the types of pest attack but farmers even apply inappropriate pesticides. In addition, farmers often do not pay attention to the label of dosage on the packaging of pesticides when to be used. This behavior triggers the application of pesticides seems less optimal. Related to surveillance, the agency has the authority to do so. The search effort to the level of farmers is done to protect them. “We have not got any reports from farmers or extension officers. However, we will find out the types of pesticides used and whether the dosage is appropriate with the type of pests and diseases attacking the

plants,” he said. Other than farmers are less careful, Swatantra found that the types of pest attack are diverse, while the symptoms are almost similar. With this situation, any less careful use of pesticide will give less optimal result. To that end, the agency will provide optimal understanding and guidance for farmers to pay attention to the types of pests attacking, so that the pesticide used will be appropriate. “Now, the pests and diseases are numerous and often go unnoticed. When farmers apply inappropriate pesticides, the result is not optimal,” he said. As reported earlier, the wine growers at Banjar village, Banjar, complained about the low quality of pesticides. Farmers began to suspect if the pesticides are counterfeit. Besides, the price of

the pesticides is also expensive and increases for many times. For instance, the price of a pesticide reaches IDR 150,000 and there is even a type of pesticide sold for IDR 900,000. Due to this condition, farmers are forced to apply pesticide with higher dosage than usual. Moreover, the spraying is done repeatedly so that the attacking pests can really be eradicated and no longer disturb the development of the plant itself. Even though the situation is difficult, farmers in this region are still buying the pesticides. It is done because the viticulture has become a livelihood for family’s income. All this time, farmers have not received any assistance from relevant agency related how to get quality and suitable pesticides to be used. (kmb38)

Out of fashion: how men could fall off the catwalk

MILAN - Men are in danger of falling off the catwalk in Europe. Menswear shows, traditionally held months before the women hit the runways later in the year, are being slowly airbrushed from the fashion industry’s calendar and folded into the women’s events, almost as an accessory. In Milan, where male models are strutting their stuff in shows that began on Friday for men’s fashion week, 10 designers have decided not to showcase their collections this year including Calvin Klein, Ermenegildo Zegna and Kering’s Brioni and Bottega Veneta. Other brands, including Burberry, Gucci and Tom Ford, have announced in recent months that they plan to stage combined events in future. Most said this would allow them to show buyers and customers both collections at the same time, giving a more complete idea of their designs. But some industry insiders and analysts say separate men’s fashion shows, which can cost up to hundreds of thousands of dollars each, are no longer worth the money for luxury brands, which have been hit by a global sales slowdown. Menswear pulls in far less money than womenswear, in terms of sales, and men’s shows generate a fraction of the global publicity of women’s. “They (brands) are focusing on what has the highest return on investment,” said Bernstein analyst

In contrast, men’s catwalk don’t turn as many heads with their low-key guest lists. The warning signs for male models flashed four months ago when both Burberry and Tom Ford said they would hold combined shows. Italian luxury brand Gucci followed suit in April, announcing it would merge its collections and shows starting next year. Bottega Veneta also said it would integrate its shows for its 50th anniversary, though not confirming whether it would continue doing so in the future. “Although menswear has acquired more of a standing over the years, the women’s shows are still the most important ... with many more brands focusing on women,” said Vick Mihaci, President of Elite Management, a leading model

agency. But industry experts explain that fashion shows are not as cost-effective as they once were and that the industry has to pay greater attention to costs as world demand for luxury goods has

weakened. Social media is heavily influencing the industry, speeding up demand for new products but also allowing fashion brands to reach out to potential customers more directly and inexpensively.

I salute to the regent of Buleleng for educating residents to enliven the TLF. Trees and flowers are produced by local community. DENPASAR - Children from Dharma Panji Lestari Studio, Payangan, Gianyar, participated in enlivening the Ayodya Stage of the Bali Arts Festival (BAF), on June 22nd. Children aged between seven and fourteen years performed a janger creation dance entitled ‘Living in Bali’. Art director of the janger dance, Ni Nyoman Sukerni, said that the choreography entitled ‘Life in Bali’ was inspired by the janger dance frequently staged in Ubud with the storyline of Arjuna Wiwaha. However, she also added creative games to the janger dance. “This choreography tells about the life of Balinese people with strong traditions and culture, especially in terms of preservation traditional performing arts by passing it down to futur generations through our children”, she said. Budiasa, said that the art troupe involves 12 janger dancers, 16 kecak dancers and 14 gamelan players. Since the dancers and gamelan players are children, he finds challenges in training. Actually, it takes him three months to make preparation for the performance. “It needs extraordinary patience because children are obviously joking and playing and do not yet know about responsibility. We must guide them patiently, provide motivation, encouragement and set a good example,” he said. Another choreographer, A.A. Gde Putra Wicaksana, added that children di let learn well under pressure. When it is time for children to play, they are given freedom to play. Nevertheless, they are still able to give the best performance. One challenge is memorizing dialogues even though there are some improvisations. (kmb)

NEGARA - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has plans to increase the length of the breakwater at the Nusantara Fishery Port (PPN) of Pengambengan. The impact. on thw surrounding needs to be considered. Since the construction of the existing breakwater, fishing communities around PPN have been impacted by coastal abrasion which people believe is the direct result of the breakwater. During a recent inspection of PNN Pengambangan’s breakwater, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Susi Pudjiastuti, asked that the length of the breakwater be increased because the mooring pond has silt and sand deposits which hampera the entrance of boata into.the harbour. When asked about the impact of abrasion, the minister mentioned that a breakwater at the fiahermen’s settlement was also necessary.“Apparently a breakwater must also be installed at that location, we will examine the conditions”, she said. N.Korea leader says missile launch shows ability to attack U.S. in Pacific SEOUL - North Korea leader Kim Jong Un said after supervising the test launch of an intermediate-range missile that the country now has the capability to attack U.S. interests in the Pacific, official media reported on Thursday.

South Korean and U.S. military officials have said the North launched what appeared to be two intermediate-range missiles dubbed Musudan on Wednesday. The first of the two was considered a failure. The second reached a high altitude in the direction of Japan before plunging into the sea about 400 km (250 miles) away, they said. The test-fire was successful without putting the security of neighbouring countries at risk, the North’s KCNA news agency said, referring to the missile as a “Hwasong-10.” Hwasong is Korean for Mars. “We have the sure capability to attack in an overall and practical way the Americans in the Pacific operation theatre,” KCNA quoted Kim as saying.

The missile, which is fired from mobile launchers, has a design range of more than 3,000 km (1,860 miles), meaning all of Japan and the U.S. territory of Guam are potentially within reach. A spokesman for South Korea’s military, Jeon Ha-gyu, said the second launch demonstrated “technical progress in terms of its engine capacity”. However, Jeon said it would not be meaningful to discuss whether it was a success because it was not a normal flight. Japan and South Korea said the missile flew to a height of 1,000 km (620 miles). Experts said it appeared North Korea had deliberately raised the angle of the launch to avoid hitting any territory of Japan. South Korea and the United States condemned the launch as an unacceptable violation of U.N.

VIENNA - A heroin “epidemic” is gripping the United States, where cheap supply has helped push the number of users to a 20year high, increasing drug-related deaths, the United Nations said on Thursday. According to the U.N.’s World Drug Report 2016, the number of heroin users in the United States reached around one million in 2014, almost three times as many as in 2003. Heroin-related deaths there have increased five-fold since 2000. “There is really a huge epidemic (of) heroin in the U.S.,” said Angela Me, the chief researcher for the report which was released on Thursday. “It is the highest definitely in the last 20 years,” Me said, adding that the trend was continuing. The rise could be linked to U.S. legislation introduced in recent years which makes it harder to abuse prescription opioids such as oxicodone, a powerful painkiller that can have similar effects to heroin, Me said. The law meant the texture of the pills was changed to make it more difficult to crush them and inject them into the blood stream, Me said. “This has caused a partial shift from the misuse of these prescription opioids to heroin.” Another reason for the increase in the use of heroin, which in the United States mainly comes from Mexico and Colombia, is greater supply that has depressed prices in recent years, Me said. The United States has also seen a spike in deaths related to fentanyl, a synthetic opioid 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times more so than morphine, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Fentanyl has been named as the drug that killed pop singer Prince this year. At least 207,000 deaths globally were drug-related in 2014, with heroin use and overdose-related deaths increasing sharply also over the last two years, according to the Vienna-based U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). “Heroin continues to be the drug that kills the most people and this resurgence must be addressed urgently,” Yury Fedotov, the executive director of the UNODC, said. Yellen faces GOP criticism over weak economic growth

WASHINGTON — Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen came under fire Wednesday from House Republicans who charged that the central bank’s policies to promote low interest rates have not boosted economic growth and have left financial markets confused about the Fed’s next moves. House Financial Services Committee Chairman Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, said that the Fed and the Obama administration have failed to produce the strong growth the country has needed over the past seven years in the wake of the 20072009 recession. “What is clear and verifiable is that this weak economy doesn’t work for millions of working Americans,” Hensarling told Yellen. “The Fed has been the facilitator and accommodator of the administration’s disastrous national debt policy and has regrettably lent its shrinking credibility to advancing the administration’s social agenda.” While Republicans on the committee joined in Hensarling’s criticism, Democrats defended Yellen. They noted that the unemployment rate has fallen from 10 percent to 4.7 percent, and 14 million jobs have been created despite modest overall growth. Yellen said the Fed has used the tools it has available to keep interest rates low as a way to bolster job creation. Testifying for a second day before Congress, Yellen reiterated that the Fed plans to be very cautious in raising interest rates. She said the economy faces a mixed picture, with growth restrained by lackluster investment spending but bolstered by a solid rebound in consumer spending.

Yellen said she was “very hopeful” that job growth, which slowed sharply in April and May, will rebound in coming months. “There are some headwinds but we do have strengths. Consumer spending is particularly strong,” Yellen said. “I don’t want to send a message of pessimism about the economy and where we are going.” The Fed left a key interest rate unchanged at a low level of 0.25 percent to 0.5 percent at its meeting last week. It was the fourth time it has passed up a chance to raise rates after nudging rates up by a quarterpoint last December. Hensarling and other Republicans used Yellen’s appearance to criticize the Fed’s current operations. Republicans in the House are pushing legislation that would require the central bank to adopt a formula using inflation and other measures to guide its decisions on interest rates. Yellen has called such an approach unworkable. She has also voiced objections to another GOP proposal that would give congressional auditors the chance to review Fed decisions on interest-rate policies, saying that would impinge on the political independence the Fed needs to conduct monetary policy. But Hensarling said the current confusion in markets about the central bank’s next move underscored the need for reforms.

In April, the international lending agency had forecast 2.4 percent growth for 2016. Still, IMF managing director Christine Lagarde, citing a healthy job market, says “the U.S. economy is in good shape.” U.S. unemployment fell last month to an eight-year low 4.7 percent. Employers have added a solid 200,000 jobs a month over the past year.

The U.S. is growing faster than most other advanced economies. The IMF foresees 1.5 percent growth this year for the 19 countries that use the euro currency, and 0.5 percent growth for Japan. The American economy got off to a slow start this year, expanding at a lackluster 0.8 percent annual pace from January through March. Police arrests five suspects for spurious vaccines JAKARTA - The National Police has arrested five persons suspected of manufacturing and distributing spurious vaccines for babies. “We have arrested a pharmacy owner, MF, and two couriers whose initials are TH and ER,” Director of Special Economic Crime Directorate of the National Police, Brigadier General Agung Setya, said here on Wednesday. The suspects were arrested during a raid on a pharmacy located in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta on Tuesday. Police found some leads which led them to a house used to make spurious vaccines in Puri Bintaro Hijau complex, Pondok Aren, Tangerang.

Govt discusses national energy plan

JAKARTA - The government, at the third plenary meeting of the National Energy Council, will formulate a national energy general plan to last up to 2050 for energy development in the country. “The main focus of the National Energy Councils Third Plenary Meeting this afternoon is to formulate the general plan, increase the number of the councils meetings and discuss other strategic issues,” President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said while opening the plenary meeting at the Presidential Office here on Wednesday. The president pointed out that the general plan will provide a direction and a road map to develop national energy policy till the specified time. He argued that a comprehensive planning and development of the energy sector was required and there is a need to adopt a long term vision so that it serves as a guiding principle for the central government, the regional governments, state-owned companies and other stakeholders.

The head of state also stressed the importance of synergy between the central government and regional administrations in national energy development. The fall in the world crude price needs should spur the nation to do two things simultaneously: improve the way the oil sector is governed, and reorder the upstream and downstream oil sector. “The low crude price should give an opportunity to develop the countrys energy resilience by adding to the buffer energy reserves in anticipation of future development,” he added. Jokowi expressed the hope that by 2025, the countrys new and renewable energy mix would have reached 23 percent through five acceleration stages of the program. NEBRASKA - Michael Phelps will be a busy man at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials, and he’ll have plenty of company among elite American swimmers. Phelps is entered in five events at the trials, which begin Sunday in Omaha, Neb., and run through July 3. Four of those races — the 100- and 200-meter freestyle, the 100-meter butterfly and the 200meter individual medley — could produce head-to-head matchups with longtime rival Ryan Lochte, who is set for six events himself. Phelps has won three consecutive Olympic golds in the 200 IM

and in the 100 butterfly. He’ll also race the 200 butterfly, which he won in 2004 and 2008 before being upset and placing second in 2012. Lochte will round out his program with the 400 IM, which he won in London, and the 200 backstroke, which has netted him a gold (2008) and bronze (2012) in Olympic competition. While the most visible U.S. male swimmers will showcase a variety of strokes, Katie Ledecky will look to solidify her status as perhaps the world’s most dominant swimmer in the freestyle events. race — 50, 100, 200, 400 and 800 — in additon to the 400 IM. She is the reigning world champion in the 200, 400, 800 and 1,500 freestyle, the latter of which is not an Olympic event for women. Goalkeeper doubts revived in Spain after loss to Croatia

SAINT-MARTIN-DE-RE — Three matches into the European Championship and Spain again is talking about its goalkeepers.

The doubts that surrounded the team before Euro 2016 apparently had been put to rest when coach Vicente Del Bosque named David De Gea as the starter in place of veteran Iker Casillas. But a shaky performance by the Manchester United player against Croatia re-ignited questions about whether he is the right choice in goal for the twotime defending champions. De Gea was criticized for failing to make a stop in Croatia’s winning goal in Bordeaux on Tuesday, an 87th-minute low shot by Ivan Perisic that got past the goalkeeper at the near post. De Gea outstretched his right leg to try to make the save but was not able reach the ball. Even though the shot deflected slightly off Gerard Pique’s foot, De Gea appeared to be out of position to protect the near side. The goal gave Croatia a 2-1 win and dropped Spain to second place in Group D, which means that it will have to play Italy in the round of 16 in a rematch of the final won by the Spaniards four years ago. Some contend that De Gea could also be blamed for Croatia’s first goal, saying he should have done more to try to intercept a cross that allowed Nikola Kalinic to score an equalizer from in front of the goal just before halftime. “You only lose if you give up hope,” De Gea said on Twitter a day after the match. “Thanks for the criticism, it motivates me. We’ll keep fighting.” Del Bosque, who waited until the last minute to give De Gea the starting role in France, defended the goalkeeper. “We can’t blame De Gea for the goals,” Del Bosque said. “If we lose, it’s everybody’s fault.” But Spanish media immediately began speculating about whether Del Bosque would bring back Casillas, the indisputable starter for Spain as it won the last two European Championships and the 2010 World Cup. There had already been talk about

Casillas starting against Croatia because Spain had qualified in advance, but in the end Del Bosque decided to keep the same 11 from the first two matches and did not give any rest to the regular starters. Striker Manuel “Nolito” Agudo dedicated his goal in the match against Turkey to the 35-year-old Casillas. “Casillas remains well respected within the group,” Spain midfielder Cesc Fabregas said. “He is still acting as our captain even though he is not playing.” Spain hadn’t conceded a goal in seven straight European Championship games, but it had lost 1-0 to Georgia in its final warm-up match ahead of Euro 2016, when the 25-year-old De Gea was in goal. He got to make his senior tournament debut in France despite getting embroiled in an off-the-field controversy just three days before the opening match, when his name appeared in a police investigation into a Spanish pornographic filmmaker. LONDON - Leicester City struck an early blow ahead of the new Premier League season when leading striker Jamie Vardy signed a four-year contract extension with the champions on Thursday. England international Vardy, whose 24 goals propelled Claudio Ranieri’s side to a fairytale title, had been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal. “Leicester City have today agreed with the representatives of Jamie Vardy to extend the England international’s contract with the Premier League champions for a further four years,” the club said in a statement. “Both parties hope that this announcement will end recent speculation regarding Jamie’s future and confirm his long term commitment to Leicester City Football Club.” There were fears that Vardy’s departure could have sparked an exodus of Leicester’s key players such as PFA Player of the Season Riyad Mahrez and N’Golo Kante. Instead, the 29-year-old has signalled his intent to consolidate Leicester’s new-found status and lead them in their first Champions League campaign.
