LOS ANGELES — Hip-hop music mogul Diddy was released from jail late Monday night after an alleged assault with a weightroom kettlebell at the athletic facilities of UCLA, where his son is on the football team, police said. Diddy, 45, whose real name is Sean Combs, was freed after posting bail, several hours after his afternoon arrest, jail records showed. Officials did not identify the victim of the assault or say what led to it. No one was seriously injured, campus police said in a statement. The jail records show that Combs’ bail was $160,000, but sheriff’s officials reached by phone said he posted $50,000. The reason for the discrepancy wasn’t clear. Combs’ son Justin Combs is a redshirt junior defensive back on the UCLA football team, which has been working out on campus. He has played in just a handful of games in his three years with the team. The son of another major rap star also plays football for the Bruins. Snoop Dogg’s son Cordell Broadus is a wide receiver who signed with the team this year. Football coach Jim Mora thanked his staff for their professionalism in handling the situation. “This is an unfortunate incident

for all parties involved,” Mora said in the statement from campus police. “While UCPD continues to review this matter, we will let the legal process run its course and refrain from further comment at this time.” Combs’ representatives did not immediately respond to requests for details or comment. The arrest, first reported by TMZ, is the latest of several allegations of violence by Combs. He was acquitted of bribery and weapons-related charges in connection with a 1999 shooting at a New York nightclub. A jury cleared Combs of firing a weapon during the dispute that wounded three bystanders, as well as bribing his chauffeur to take the rap. Combs was arrested in 1999 for his involvement in the beating of former Interscope executive Steve Stoute in New York. Combs apologized, the charges were reduced, and he was ordered to attend an anger management class. Combs and Stoute have since mended their relationship, appearing on stage together at Cannes in 2013. Earlier this year, an Arizona man accused Combs of punching him in the face at a Super Bowl party. Combs was not arrested. (ap)

In accordance with the blueprint for the long-term development plan (RPJP) and the regional mid-term development plan (RPJMD), a number of programs have been designed to alleviate poverty. Most of these programs are a continuation of the previous year’s programs in the fields of education, health and economics. “Education and health issues are the embryo of poverty, so that basically the programs designed to deal with people’s health, as sickness often leads to poverty. Ignorance can also cause people to become or to remain poor,” said the Head of the Regional Development Planning Board (Bappeda) Bali, I Putu Astawa on Monday (Jun. 22).

On that account, improvements are being made to the health care system including the development of two provincial hospitals; Indra Hospital and Pratama Hospital, the strengthening of health care centers and provisions are also being made for the assistance of ambulance services other than those available through the Bali Mandara Health

In the field of education, the Bali Mandara high school and vocational school is offering scholarships for the poor and assistance for educational facilities in other schools is also being provided. “We are improving the economy through the integrated rural development movement (Gerbangsadu)

Turtle trafficker arrested, policeman allegedly involved in turtle business

DENPASAR - Unit IV of the Denpasar Police Criminal Investigation team uncovered a turtle smuggling operation in Bali. Three traffickers were arrested in the area of Penatih, Denpasar, on Sunday night (Jun. 21) one of the alleged criminals is himself a Bali Police officer with the initials P.R. The next day, Hery Wiyanto, spokesperson for the Bali Police, said that he had not received any reports about the case. “There has been no reporting of such a case that I know of. I was in a meeting all day so I haven’t had time to ask about any such report,” he added. As for the alleged involvement of a police officer in the trafficking of turltes. Wiyanto asserted that if this in fact so and there is evi-

dence to prove it, the case must be processed according to procedure. “We have internal institutional laws that will be put into process if our

BANGLI - The selling price of tomatos at the level of farmers in Songan village, Kintamani, has plummeted over the past few weeks causes many farmers to suffer losses. One of the tomato farmers at Dalem hamlet, Songan village, Kintamani, Jero Ledang, said on Monday (Jun. 22) that the selling price of most tomatoes (at the farmer level) is less than IDR 1,000 per kg. Super high quality tomatoes are being sold for IDR 1,000 to IDR 1,500 per kg. The current prices are far less than what they were three

weeks ago. “Previously, tomato was sold for about IDR 3,000 to IDR 5,000 per kg. But, now the prices have really plummeted with each kg is being sold for under IDR 1,000,” he said. According to Jero Ledang, the drop in price is due to the current tomato harvest having coincided with the tomato harvests of farmers outside of Bali. As a result, the supply of non Balinese tomatoes has flooded the market here. With the free-falling price of tomatoes that they see happening right now, he and a number of other tomato

growers in his village are suffering great losses. The production costs of this agricultural commodity is quite high, especially for pesticides. Based on his calculations, to avoid suffering losses, local farmers need to be selling their tomatoes for at least IDR 2,000 per kg. Even though prices are still dropping, Jero Ledang admitted that he is still willing to harvest his tomatoes rather than letting them rot on the vine, so as to cut his losses. “As long as there are people buying, I will pick my tomatos” he said. Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Vibrating, rollicking 4-D seats in theaters growing

LOS ANGELES — Mike Koenig sat back in his seat for a recent screening of “Mad Max: Fury Road.” But this was no ordinary theater chair. As the theater darkened and death machines rumbled across the desert on screen, Koenig’s chair rumbled with them. As bullets whizzed by Furiosa, the movie’s heroine played by Charlize Theron, puffs of air shot out of Koenig’s headrest. Wall-mounted fans in the theater gusted desert winds and fog machines pumped smoke from the mayhem. The 46-year-old software salesman’s Wednesday matinee was a “4-D” movie experience, the kind of rollicking thrill factory once reserved for theme park rides. With domestic movie theater attendance stagnant in recent years, more theater owners are looking to provide these immersive jolts to goose both moviegoers and box office revenues. “I loved it,” Koenig said, having forked over $26.25 for a “4DX” ticket at Regal Cinemas L.A. Live Stadium 14 in downtown Los Angeles. “If you ever rode bumper cars as a kid, you’d like this.” Motion seats touting a “4-D” experience can sometimes occupy a row or two in an otherwise normal theater. More souped-up models like the one at L.A. Live can take up an entire auditorium decked out with strobe lights and pneumatic lifts. With the summer movie season in full swing, movies like “San Andreas,” ‘’Jurassic World,” ‘’Ant-Man” and “Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation” are being

programmed by motion artists with the bumps and sways necessary for the seats to come to life. It’s one way for theater owners to offer something that can’t be experienced at home for the average fan. Shelby Russell, vice president of marketing for L.A. Live, says the 100-seat auditorium that was retrofitted with the 4DX system last June has tripled its revenues, thanks both to greater attendance and the $8 ticket upcharge, not to mention the $4 add-on if the movie is also shown in 3-D. The setup has helped attract visitors to L.A. who come for the theme parks and studio tours and drop by the 4DX theater for another thrill, he said. 4DX is backed by Korean conglomerate CJ Group, which has set up 170 theaters in 33 countries, but just one in the U.S. at L.A. Live. Another company, Torrance, California-based MediaMation Inc., has outfitted about two dozen theaters worldwide with its similar “MX4D” system, but there’s just

one in the U.S. in the L.A. suburb of Oxnard. Canada’s D-Box Inc. leads the pack with nearly 330 installations of its “MFX” seats at theaters worldwide, including 175 in North America, most of which are in the U.S. However, its seats only sway, vibrate and jostle, and are usually placed among non-moving seats in auditoriums. While the less-expensive installation cost has helped D-Box grow quickly at theaters, there’s no snow, fog, scents or strobe lights. The range of motion is more subtle, though the company argues it’s also more refined than newer entrants. When multiple vibrations are layered on top of each other, for example — say when a rumbling tank fires off a shot and you feel the shell exploding — D-Box encoders take care to avoid harmonic distortions by keeping vibration frequencies at least an octave apart, Auclair said. The company also has thousands of pre-set rumbles, which speaks to its experience in the field. (ap)

WASHINGTON - Twitter said Friday it was testing a new way to use the messaging platform for shopping by promoting “products and places” in its feeds, as it looks to boost revenues. “We’re starting to experiment with a small number of products and places,” Twitter product manager Amaryllis Fox said in an official blog post. “As we test, within your timeline you may see pages and collections of pages that are shared by influencers and brands.” The move will expand the platform beyond tweets to pages with product information and in some cases “buy” buttons. The revamp also allows for designated “curators” to connect with users in a manner beyond the 140character tweet. “We’ve invited a group of curators to share collections of some of their favorite places and things,” Fox said. “You’ll be able to browse rich collections from influencers you care about and get more information about the products or places you find interesting.” This could include sponsored

messages from HBO about its “Game of Thrones” television series or from actress Reese Witherspoon about her Draper James line of apparel, Fox listed in her post as examples. Other partners in the program include sportswear group Nike, retailer Target and the online news site TechCrunch. The move comes with Twitter looking to improve growth and engagement as it seeks a new top executive to replace Dick Costolo, who is stepping down. Costolo was under tremendous pressure from investors to prove his worth by increasing the ranks of Twitter users and revenues brought in by the globally popular one-tomany messaging service. Twitter’s most recent update showed it has some 300 million active users, but growth has been sluggish compared with other social networks and it has yet to show a profit. WASHINGTON - Google said Friday it was taking steps to remove from search results “revenge porn,” or sexually explicit images of people posted without their consent. The Internet search giant said it would soon put up an online form that will allow victims to make requests to remove these items from Google search queries. “We’ve heard many troubling stories of ‘revenge porn’: an expartner seeking to publicly humiliate a person by posting private images of them, or hackers stealing and distributing images from victims’ accounts,” Google search vice president Amit Singhal said in a blog post. “Some images even end up on ‘sextortion’ sites that force people to pay to have their images removed. Our philosophy has always been that search should reflect the whole web. But revenge porn images are intensely personal and emotionally damaging, and serve only to degrade the victims -- predominantly women.” Singhal said Google will “honor

requests from people to remove nude or sexually explicit images shared without their consent from Google search results.” He said it was “a narrow and limited policy, similar to how we treat removal requests for other highly sensitive personal information, such as bank account numbers and signatures,” that may surface in search results. “We know this won’t solve the problem of revenge porn -- we aren’t able, of course, to remove these images from the websites themselves -- but we hope that honoring people’s requests to remove such imagery from our search results can help.” Twitter implemented a similar policy earlier this year, banning “intimate photos or videos that were taken or distributed without the subject’s consent.” Reddit also moved to curb the posting of explicit images without consent of the people in them, after the online bulletin board was criticized for allowing the distribution of hacked nude pictures of Hollywood stars. TABANAN - The potential of Yeh Gangga Beach as one of the tourist destinations, especially marine tourist destination in Tabanan, is increasingly greater. The beach located at Sudimara village is started to be glanced by domestic and foreign surfers. Even though being glanced by surfers, the Yeh Gangga Beach has not been arranged beautifully and still looks dirty.

Holiday season, tourist visit to Subak Museum increases five times

TABANAN - On entering school holidays, the tourist visit to Subak Museum Tabanan increases at least by five times more than usual visit. The increase started to happen in May until June. Chief of the Subak Museum Tabanan, Ida Ayu Nyoman Ratna Pawitrani, said at her office on Monday (Jun. 22) that as seen from the graph, the number of tourist visit in May and June shows a sharp increase. The increase started to be seen ahead of school holidays where most visitors are the group of schools either from Bali or outside Bali. “Before grade promotion, school students usually make a sightseeing tour. During that period the tourist visit shows an increase,” said Ratna. Based on data throughout 2015, the tourist visit to Subak Museum in January amounted to 146 people, February (132), March (314), April (102), May (571), and up to June 22 has reached 2,587 people. From the data of tourist visit, they indicate an increase in visit from April to May and May to June respectively fivefold. The increasing visit is also caused by revitalization of the museum in 2012 and 2014. Previously, many museum facilities were damaged. BANGLI - Since the school holidays started, the tourist area of Mount Batur, Kintamani has been visited by many travelers. In one day, there is an average of 240 people climbing Mount Batur. Chairman of the Association of Mount Batur Guides (P3GB), I Nyoman Alit Adiana, said on Monday (Jun. 22) that the increased number of visitors to Mount Batur happens every year during the school holidays. Typically, the increase in the number of travelers begins in June to September. “Peak of tourist visit occurs in August,” he said. During school holiday this time, the number of travelers climbing the mountain with the altitude of 1,717 meters above sea level, said Alit, reaches an average of 240 people each day. This number is a four=fold increase over normal days, in other words during the rest of the year there is an average of about 60 people per day climbing Mount Batur. In addition to foreign travelers, climbing tours are also enjoyed by many domestic visitors. “As this time of year, it is mostly students on holiday who visit the mountain,” he explained. Alit explained that most people start their trek up Mount Batur at 4 o’clock in the morning and are usually accompanied by a guide so as not to get lost. It takes about two hours to reach the summit. Along the way, the panoramic view of the blue expanse of Lake Batur is enjoyed by those climbing the mountain. Japan navy drill in South China Sea may lead to larger role

PUERTO PRINCESA, Philippines — A tiny military exercise in the Philippines this week may presage something much bigger: the entry of Japan into the tussle for control of the South China Sea. A Japanese surveillance plane and about 20 troops conducted the first of two days of joint training with the Philippine navy on Tuesday off the coast of Palawan, a strategically important island not far from contested islands claimed by several countries including China and the Philippines. While the P-3C plane was being used for maritime search-andrescue drills and disaster relief drills, the aircraft is also a mainstay of Japan’s anti-submarine and other aerial surveillance efforts. In theory, it could help the U.S. keep an eye on the Chinese navy in the South China Sea. Some experts think that’s a possibility in coming years. “It’s likely we will see Japan doing joint surveillance and reconnaissance in the South China Sea in the coming years,” said Narushige Michishita, a defense expert at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Tokyo. “It is going to be with the U.S., Australia, the Philippines and others.” Others are less certain. Such a move would raise tensions with China, with which Japan already has a major territorial dispute over

islands farther north in the East China Sea. It would face public opposition at home from those who want Japan’s military to avoid getting entangled in overseas disputes. The military is already stretched, keeping an eye for example on North Korea and China in the East China Sea. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang expressed concern about the exercise. “We hope that the sides in question do not play up and create tensions on purpose, and that any interactions between those countries would actually contribute to regional peace and stability, rather than the opposite,” Lu told reporters at a regular briefing. Philippine naval personnel flew on board the Japanese P-3C to observe operations and learn techniques and procedures, Col. Jonas Lumawag of the Philippine navy told reporters. The P-3C communicated with a smaller Philippine plane on a hypothetical search mission for a missing ship or plane. Islamic group plans an Indonesian car PALEMBANG - Fed up with capitalists plundering Indonesia’s riches, members of the country’s second-largest Islamic group have drawn up plans to launch a “people’s power” movement. On top of their list: build a national car. If realised, the Muhammadiyah group’s ambition would revive a project launched by autocratic leader Suharto’s son, Tommy, in 1996 but halted during the Asian financial crisis just two years later. As yet, though, its plans for the car are sketchy. A century-old Islamic group in the country which has the largest number of Muslims in the world, Muhammadiyah is known mainly for its ubiquitous schools and hospitals. But it also has ambitions to break into tourism, food and the fishing sectors. The group’s push to become a force in the economic and corporate spheres has been spurred by the success of its so-called “constitutional jihad”, which has dealt legal blows to private participation in the energy and water sectors and now threatens to reverse the convertibility of the currency. Muhammadiyah, which has some 30 million followers, believes it has a mission to protect Southeast Asia’s largest economy from globalisation and capitalistic policies that favour foreign investors over Indonesians. But its campaign could derail President Joko Widodo’s already stumbling efforts to attract desperately needed investment from abroad. “Muhammadiyah is now in the middle of a struggle between a capitalist economic system and a socialist economic system,” said Syafrudin Anhar, head of the group’s economic committee. “The world will not reach peace and prosperity through political intrigue, but rather through economic balance.” Indonesia’s largest Islamic group, Nahdlatul Ulama, also funds schools and hospitals, but is not overtly political. Muhammadiyah, thee years ago, challenged parts of the oil and gas law, saying they violated a constitutional tenet that all land, water and natural resources must be controlled by the state. Its victories in that case became the opening salvo in what became known as a “constitutional jihad”. The group now has 115 laws in its sights, including legislation on foreign exchange, investment and the power sector, and also plans to challenge Widodo’s decision to scrap fuel subsidies, his boldest policy step so far. “We are not against foreign investors as long as there are clear limitations on foreign involvement in economic sectors,” Anhar said. Anhar and a small group of mainly Muhammadiyah economic professors gathered this month for a three-day conference in the town of Palembang to draft an economic battle plan for the next five years. Once finalised, the blueprint will be submitted for approval at the group’s national congress in August. The plan is to consolidate small Muhammadiyah businesses into industry-specific companies that will receive initial funding through a network of micro-financing cooperatives. Muhammadiyah sees opportunities to cash in on the growing demand for halal food and halal tourism in Indonesia. As for the national car, its vocational schools have already built several proto-types of a model called the Esemka, which was used by Widodo as his official vehicle when he was mayor of the city of Surakarta or Solo. One proto-type can run on solar energy, said Bambang Setiadji, professor at Solo’s Muhammadiyah University (UMS). “To establish such an industry, it is not that difficult,” he said. “UMS has given birth to many automotive industry engineers whose quality competes with those of China’s.” The group hopes to get Widodo’s backing to start mass production of the Esemka this year under a partnership between an Indonesian and a Chinese company that would aim to source up to 80 percent of its components from Indonesia. “We want our own companies and to make products for the middle and lower class,” said Nadrattuzaman Hosen of the group’s economic council. “The difference will be that our profits will not go to the rich overseas, but will remain at home and go to our people.” (rtr)

Police bust international drug ring, seizing 72.6 kg of meth

JAKARTA - Jakarta Metro Jaya Police have arrested six suspected members of ChinaIndonesia international drug ring and have seized 72.6 kilograms of methamphetamine worth Rp106 billion, or around US$ eight million. “The suspects committed the crime by hiding the meth inside reflexology machines,” Chief of Jakarta Metro Police (Polda Metro Jaya) Inspector General Tito Karnavian revealed on Tuesday. The joint task force of the Indonesian Police Headquarter and Polda Metro Jaya Police has arrested four Indonesians: DEB, KYT, LY, TYS; and two Nigerian nationals: DB and OK, who were believed to be members of an international drug ring. Director of Detective and Drugs of Polda Metro Jaya Senior Commissioner Eko Daniyanto stated that the investigation into the case

began after the police seized 27.2 kilograms of meth at DEB’s house in Tebet, South Jakarta. During the course of the investigation, DEB admitted that the meth belonged to a Nigerian national DB, who was later arrested along with LY. The police managed to confiscate 3.5 kilograms of meth from the two foreigners. The police thereafter arrested OK and KYT at Mercure Hotel in Ancol, North Jakarta. OK was believed to be the mastermind, while LY and KYT were the receivers of the expedited packages.

The police then arrested TYS in Bekasi, West Java Province, and after some follow-ups managed to seize 1.1 kilograms of meth from a boarding house in Karet Street, North Jakarta. The police are still on the lookout for two other Nigerian suspects: EK and DJ. The suspects will be charged under Article 114, paragraph (2) subsidiary Article 112, paragraph (2) of Law No. 35 of 2009 on narcotics and will be subject to a minimum sentence of five years imprisonment and will face a maximum penalty of death. Far-right surges in Croatia as EU disappointment spreads

ZAGREB, Croatia — It was one of the biggest nights in Croatia’s sporting calendar: a European Championship soccer qualifying match with Italy. Seconds after kick-off in a game beamed around the world, a gigantic swastika materialized on the pitch under the shocked gaze of European soccer officials. The swastika, sprayed by an unknown vandal with a chemical that became visible only when floodlights went on to start the game, has become the most potent symbol of a rise in ultra-nationalist sentiment that appears to be bleeding into the mainstream population in the European Union’s newest member state. But it’s not the only one. In the mixed ethnic towns of eastern Croatia, road signs in the Serbian Cyrillic alphabet have been destroyed and Serbian Orthodox churches have been vandalized with a “U’’ symbol representing the Nazi-linked World War II Ustasha regime. On weekends, Ustasha chants echo at sports venues and rock concerts. The appearance of such symbols is perhaps unsurprising for a country that during World War II which sent tens of thousands of Serbs, Jews and Gypsies to death camps. But the Balkan state’s current leaders have called for change after the global outcry prompted by the swastika on the field. “This act has inflicted immeasurable damage on the reputation of Croatian citizens and their homeland all over the world,” said Croatia’s

new conservative president, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic. “Therefore, we must finally put a stop to such things.” The rise of the right in Croatia has been fueled by deep economic hardship and growing public anger over the inability of the left-leaning government to deal with it, even after the country entered the EU two years ago, fueling dreams of sudden riches that have not materialized. Minorities, especially Serbs, have complained of fears for their safety since Grabar-Kitarovic was elected president in December. The AntiSerb graffiti has evoked memories of the bloodshed that engulfed the region during the 1990s Balkans wars that tore apart the former Yugoslavia. At an event last month in southern Austria, Croatian ultranationalist Ivica Safaric proudly brandished the “U’’ Ustasha symbol on a medallion around his neck. His companions in black shirts raised their right arms high in a Nazi salute, shouting out a dreaded battle call “For the homeland — Ready!” used by wartime Croatian fascist troops.

“I respect the Ustasha movement because it created the independent state of Croatia,” said Safaric, who fought for Croatia’s independence in the 1990s. The gathering in Bleiburg was a memorial to tens of thousands of proNazi soldiers, their families, children and civilians killed by communist guerrillas at the end of the war in 1945. Commemorations for the Bleiburg massacre victims are held every year in May, but last month’s gathering was by far the largest ever, with an estimated 40,000 people participating. It happened as much of Europe marked the 70th anniversary of liberation from the Nazis, and the pro-Nazi imagery at Bleiburg was met by muted response from Croatia’s politicians. Grabar-Kitarovic endorsed the Bleiburg commemorations and honored the victims just days ahead of the main event, but did not go there when the crowds gathered. Niagara recalls bottled spring water on E. coli concern NEW YORK — Niagara Bottling has recalled 14 brands of bottled spring water produced at two Pennsylvania manufacturing plants after the operator of one of its contracted springs failed to reveal evidence of E. coli bacteria at the spring source. The company said E. coli bacteria was found in the water supply on June 10, but that there has been no E. coli contamination detected in its finished products or in the spring water delivered to its bottling facility. It has not received any complaints of injury or illness. E. coli can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramping, nausea and vomiting. Niagara Bottling LLC is recalling spring water products made at two plants in Pennsylvania between 3

a.m. Eastern on June 10 and 8 p.m. on June 18. The facilities are located in Hamburg and Allentown. The water is labeled under brands including Acadia, Acme, Big Y, Best Yet, 7-11, Niagara, Nature’s Place, Pricerite, Superchill, Morning Fresh, Shaws, Shoprite, Western Beef Blue and Wegman’s. Consumers should not drink the affected water without boiling it first to kill bacteria and other organisms. The company also suggests using other bottled water. Farmers are more inclined to raise cattle as opposed to implementing technology transfer. This cannot sustainably increase the income of farmers, let alone attract young people to become farmers, as is the stated purpose of the Simantri program. “How are people going to become interested in becoming farmers? The Simantri program has been widely advertised but nobody is interested. People remain in the same situation. It is not a matter of the program being unsuitable, but rather that the program does not function as it was designed to. If people are just raising cattle, there is no need to work through the Simantri program,” he explained. There are also other problematic issues with the Simantri program added Adnyana, such as the expensive biogas devices that are not

utilized and thus are an ineffective use of the budget. As for the Gerbangsadu program, many funds allocated through the program have evaporated and sometimes even used by the recipients, to gamble. According to Adnyana, this is allowed to happens because there is lack of supervision which makes it so that the intention of the program is not on track. “There are many impromptu programs. The governor allocates these funds because many families are poor. However, the headman of many villages and the villagers themselves are not adequately prepared for these ideas and programs, which are in fact good,” he added. Adnyana said that that poverty is unlikely to be eradicated as it has not even been reduced very much over the years even though Bali is ranked second nationally in terms of poverty alleviation. “‘Good’ is a term used in comparison to the rest of Indonesia, but in terms of Bali itself, only the complete alleviation of poverty can be said to be a success. Poverty here increases then decreases then increases again. Of course there is always potential for new families to fall into poverty through marriage, tragedy and disaster but these are a small percentage of the overall cause of poverty. Obviously, such cases can never be entirely eradicated,” he said. Adnyana concluded that in order for the government programs to comply with the blueprint for poverty alleviation, assistance in the form of adequate skills and understanding must be provided to the communities in question. Also, people must have a desire to work and generate increased revenue. In this way, lives can be changed and the problem of poverty in Bali can be resolved. (kmb32)

Pedrosa says arm surgery saved his MotoGP career

Dani Pedrosa says his Catalunya Grand Prix podium proves his radical arm surgery has paid off and saved his MotoGP career. The Honda factory rider withdrew from MotoGP after the season-opener in Qatar after repeated attempts to cure an ‘arm pump’ problem had failed. He underwent “complicated and aggressive” surgery in which the fascia around the muscle in his right forearm was completely moved. Having missed three races, he returned for Le Mans last month and then made his first podium appearance of 2015 with third at Barcelona earlier this month. “I’ve had to take some difficult decisions and everything looked against me but I followed my heart and actually it was the right thing to do,” said Pedrosa. “Since I came back, every race I feel better and better so it is clear that I have a positive progression in my physical condition. “For the mind it’s also important because you get more confident and I can start to forget more about

it and attack more in riding.” The 29-year-old Spaniard, who has been part of Honda’s works MotoGP team since 2006, admitted his career had been in jeopardy before the surgery. “I knew if I couldn’t recover my arm there would be no meaning in racing in a situation where I cannot grab the handlebars and be focused on the riding,” said Pedrosa. “That’s why I stopped because I knew it was a difficult situation to continue that way and I needed to keep clear for my future racing activities.” Although Pedrosa was third in Spain, he was 19 seconds adrift of the factory Yamahas. “It’s obvious that we are far from them in race pace but we can’t do everything in one day,” he said. “We know we have some problems but little by little we hope to get closer in the next races. “Hopefully we can learn more about where to improve the bike and some tracks will suit our bike more.” (rtr)

Neymar out of Copa America after Brazil accepts his ban

SANTIAGO, Chile — Neymar will play no further part in the Copa America after Brazil chose to accept the four-match suspension handed to its captain and star player following his red card in the group stage.

The Brazilian Football Confederation said Monday that a decision not to appeal against the sanction was taken after a meeting between Neymar and the coaching staff on Sunday — a day after national-team coach Dunga said that Brazil likely would make an appeal. Neymar, one of the world’s best players, was sent off after kicking the ball toward Colombia’s Pablo Armero after the referee blew for fulltime in a Group C game on Wednesday, which Brazil lost 1-0. Neymar also appeared to head-butt another player who came to confront him. CONMEBOL, the governing body of South American football, said the referee’s report also showed he insulted the referee after the match and grabbed him by the arms. Neymar will be leaving the squad in Chile on Monday. “I waited for this moment with a lot of faith and hope for the possibility of playing with the Brazilian team in this Copa America. Unfortunately, it won’t be possible,” Neymar said on his Instagram account. “I know my presence in the group is important, just like every other player, who will need more than ever your thoughts for the games

Qatar group to push sports integrity in US even as World Cup award faces probes

NEW YORK/LONDON - FIFA’s granting of rights to Qatar to host the World Cup in 2022 is a focus of U.S. and Swiss probes into alleged corruption at soccer’s governing body, but that isn’t stopping a group financed by the tiny nation from coming to Washington this week to talk about cleaning up sports. The Doha-based International Centre for Sport Security (ICSS), which is largely funded by the Qatari government, will talk about its efforts to boost transparency in bidding processes for major sporting events and combat financial malpractice in professional sport at an event it is holding at the National Press Club on Wednesday. The group, which is headed by two former officials from Qatar’s military, includes FIFA’s former head of security as an executive director and Interpol’s former president as a member of its advisory board. The event comes on the heels of the indictment by U.S. authorities of nine current or former FIFA officials and five executives in sports marketing or broadcasting on May 27. They face charges of bribery, money laundering and wire fraud involving more than $150 million. That investigation is also examining allegations that there was corruption in the awarding of World Cup hosting rights to Russia for 2018 and Qatar four years later, according to a U.S. law enforcement official. The Swiss authorities have their own criminal probe into those decisions. “The ICSS encourages and supports any proactive action that targets corruption in sport governing bodies by law enforcement agencies,” the organization said in a statement on its website. Its budget is 70 percent financed by the government of Qatar and the rest is income from projects, said ICSS spokesman Stuart Hodge. ICSS couldn’t immediately say how large that budget is. Critics say the organization has a public perception problem because of the investigations into the allegations about how it’s main patron won enough support from FIFA’s 24-member executive committee in 2010 to get the 2022 hosting rights. It had faced competing bids from the U.S., South Korea, Japan and Australia. “There is no question that a Qatari entity faces some reputational challenges as it sets out to clean up sports,” said Alexandra Wrage, an anti-corruption expert and founder of the Annapolis, Maryland-based TRACE International. “Qatar is investing heavily in projects designed to enhance its public image. Whatever its other goals, I am sure the ICSS was established in part for this reason,” said Wrage, who resigned in frustration from FIFA’s Independent Governance Committee in 2013, saying calls for change went unheeded. And Jens Sejer Andersen, the director of Danish government-funded sports integrity group Play the Game, said the ICSS clearly had a credibility problem “when serious suspicions are floating in the air surrounding Qatar’s 2022 bid due to the corrupt culture in FIFA at the time.” ICSS, though, says it is independent. “There is no external influence or input put on the ICSS from the government of Qatar in terms of how we are run and our activities,” said Hodge. Both Russia and Qatar have vehemently denied there was any wrongdoing in the way they won the World Cup hosting rights.
