LOS ANGELES - Pop star Ariana Grande said on Monday she was “broken” five hours after a bombing killed 19 people and wounded dozens of others at her concert in Manchester, England.

Land conversion reduces Hotel management asked to stake care farmland in Badung of turtle nests Turtle egg nest location

MANGUPURA - Government of Badung district must immediately realize the program of rural and urban property tax (PBB P2). It is following the land conversion continuously eroding the green open land. Moreover, the land conversion occurred in Badung in 2016 already reached 36 hectares.

Head of the Badung Agriculture and Food Agency, IGAK Sudaratmaja, when confirmed on Monday (May 22) admitted that land conversion remains to occur. “We do not deny it (land conversion—Ed). This happens because residents sell their paddy fields and then are turned into residential areas,” he said. According to him, the largest land conversion takes place in the area of North Kuta. In addition to switching to settlements and industrial estates, the development of tourist accommodation also contributes to the extensive land conversion occurred in the region. “Construction of tourist accommodation such as villa also contributes to the addition of land conversion, other than turning into a settlement,” he said. In order to compensate the shrinking land, Sudaratmaja said that his agency has succeeded in creating 25 hectares of paddy fields in 2015 and 5 hectares in 2016 located at Subak Pangsut Sari, Belok Sidan village, Petang, despite the target of creating new paddy fields amounts to 100 hectares. “In 2015 the diversion and or addition of land area

In 2014, land conversion reached 160 hectares transformed into housing estate, with details that 123 hectares located in North Kuta, 33 hectares in Mengwi, 3 hectares in Kuta and 1 hectare in Abiansemal. In 2015, land conversion took place over 40 hectares into residential area, with details that 17 hectares are located in Kuta Utara, 12 hectares in Mengwi, 7 hectares in Kuta and 4 hectares in Abiansemal. In 2016, the land conversion reached 36 hectares transformed into residential area, with details that 17 hectares are located in North Kuta, 14 hectares in Mengwi, and 5 hectares in Abiansemal. Thus, in the past three years or in the period of 2013-2016 the remaining land in the Badung area covers an area of 9,975 hectares. (kmb27)

MANGUPURA - South Bali coastal area is indeed a suitable location for turtle to lay eggs, especially for olive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea). The turtle laying area extends from Kuta to Nusa Dua, though most of the turtle egg laying happens along the coast of Nusa Dua. . In fact many of the turtle lay their eggs on the beach in front of Nusa Dua hotels. According to date from the Nusa Dua Reef Foundation, there were 33 turtle nests in Nusa Dua last year. As of May 2017, a total of seven nests have been recorded. These seven nests are scattered in several locations: 5 nests on Mengiat Beach, 1 in front of the Club Med hotel and 1 in front of Conrad Hotel. “So far this year, we have found seven turtle egg nests, however we estimate that this number will increase considering than in 2016 we recorded a total of 33 turtle egg nests” explained Pariama Hutasoit, from the Nusa Dua Reef Foundation when contacted on Monday (May 22). The Nusa Dua Reef Foundation plans to continuously provide guidance to hotel managers around Nusa about how to deal with turtle egg nests. Hotel managers are asked to put up a sign near any turtle nests that they encounter and to cordon off the nest area as a means of protecting the eggs from damage. “We appeal to hotel management to take care of the turtle nests by putting up signs that explain what kind of turtle egg is there, the date that the eggs were laid and the estimated time of hatching. The incubation period for sea turtles is somewhere between 45-55 days” explained Pariama. In order to work sustainably with the turtles, hotels are also expected not to collect and raise the turtle hatchlings themselves as this disrupts the eco-system. Once hatched, turtles must be release no more than

three days later. The Nusa Dua Reef foundation provides information about how to release hatchlings. “ The releasing of turtle hatchlings into their natural habitat can involve the participation of tourists from the hotels and can thus serve as a tourist attraction” he said. In the area of Mengiat Beach, the Yasa Segara Mengiat supervisory community patrols the beach every night during spawning season. When turtles are found getting ready to lay eggs, they are secured and relocated to an area of Mengiat Beach that is managed by the village cooperative (KUD) and the supervisory community group. Although they relocate the nesting location of the turtles for the security of the eggs, they do not plan to create an artificial nesting site “ IT is not recommended as it is preferable to remain as natural as possible” said Pariama. The Nusa Dua Reef Foundation’s concern for the environment and care for the coral reef also extends to working with tourism stakeholders especially when it comes to turtel conservation. The foundation is actively involved in providing information to hotels and in searching our turtle nests. The government is also involved in this endeavour, through the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries” Center for Coastal and Marine Resources (PBSPL) Denpasar who also provide coaching. When contacted separately, Chief of Yasa Segara Mengiat supervisory community group, Ketut Koder, said that the community group consisting of 29 members who work around the clock. The members are divided in 4 groups of 7 people who generally deal with the tourism sector in the morning and supervise the area at night. Because the month of May is turtle nesting season, constant supervision is required. (kmb23)

MANGUPURA - Mekotek is one of Munggu Village’s, traditional catastrophe-repelling art forms that will be presented in this year’s Bali Arts Festival (BAF). Mekotek is an ancestral heritage art that is carried out every six months on Saturday Kliwon Kuningan. Head of the Badung Culture Office, Ida Bagus Anom Bhasma, explained that the art of mekotekan or ngerebek has been recognized as

an intangible cultural heritage and will soon be registered as such with UNESCO. “In the mean time, we will show this traditional art at the BAF so that more people will know that this art form exists in Badung” said Anom Bhasma on Monday (May 22). The Badung Culture Office will involve hundreds of artists in the annual cultural extravaganza organized by the government of

Bali at the Denpasar Art Center. “There are about 500 artists from Badung involved in the BAF including dancers and traditional music performers. This cultural event will go on for a whole month so we can show off a number of different arts”, he added. The district of Badung representatives will be appearing from June 10- July and are still preparing for the festival. “In addition to presenting the me-

The World’s First Robot Police Officer Just Debuted in Dubai

DUBAI - From fast food cooks to concierges at restaurants and hotels, robots are slowly infiltrating the workforce in nearly every industry. Most recently, the world welcomed its first operational robot policeman.

“Robocop,” the newest member of the Dubai police force, debuted on May 22 at the Fourth Gulf Information Security Expo and Conference, where it greeted guests. At approximately 70 inches tall and weighing nearly 220 pounds, Robocop seeks to engage with city residents and tourists. Featuring an “emotion detector,” the robot can recognize a person’s gestures and body language from nearly five feet away. Robocop’s skills don’t stop there -- the emotionally intelligent bot can detect if a person is happy, sad and even angry by studying his or her facial expression. And just like your human friends would do, if Robocop sees you’re unhappy, it will try to lift your spirits. More importantly, when it comes to fighting crime, the robot uses the internet of things, artificial intelligence and other smart technologies to spot offenders using facial recognition. Its navigation skills grant it the ability to map out areas and travel on its own. Equipped with a built-in tablet, Robocop can communicate with people, speak six languages, respond to public queries, shake hands and even military salute. “With an aim to assist and help people in the malls or on the streets,” said BrigadierGeneral Khalid Nasser Al Razzouqi, director-general of smart services at Dubai Police, “the Robocop is the latest smart addition to the force and has been designed to help us fight crime, keep the city safe and improve happiness levels.” (IBP/net)

WUZHEN — A computer defeated China’s top player of the ancient board game go on Tuesday, earning praise that it might have finally surpassed human abilities in one of the last games machines have yet to dominate. Google’s AlphaGo won the first of three planned games this week against Ke Jie, a 19-year-old prodigy, in this town west of Shanghai. But now I feel its understanding of go and the judgment of the game is beyond our ability.” Go players take turns putting white or black stones on a rectangular grid with 361 intersections, trying to capture territory and each other’s pieces by surrounding them. Competitors play until both agree there are no more places to put stones or one quits. The game, which originated in China more than 25 centuries ago, has avoided mastery by computers even as they surpassed humans in most other games. They conquered chess in 1997 when IBM Corp.’s Deep Blue system defeated cham-

pion Garry Kasparov. Go, known as weiqi in China and baduk in Korea, is considered more challenging because the near-infinite number of possible positions requires intuition and flexibility. Players had expected it to be at least another decade before computers could beat the best humans due to go’s complexity and reliance on intuition, but AlphaGo surprised them in 2015 by beating a European champion. Last year, it defeated South Korea’s Lee Sedol. AlphaGo was designed to mimic such intuition in tackling complex tasks. Google officials say they want to apply those technologies to areas such as smartphone assistants and solving real-world problems. AlphaGo defeated Lee in four out of five games during a weeklong match in March 2016. Lee lost the first three games, then won the fourth, after which he said he took advantages of weaknesses including AlphaGo’s poor response to surprises. Following Lee’s surprise victory, “we went back to try and improve the architecture and the system,” said Hassabis. “We believe we have fixed that knowledge gap but of course there could be many other new areas that it doesn’t know and that we don’t know either.” Go is hugely popular in Asia, with tens of millions of players in China, Japan and the Koreas. Google said a broadcast of Lee’s 2016 match with AlphaGo was watched by an estimated 280 million people. (ap)

THIS small but very strong exhibition of paintings is a testament to the power of Balinese tradition to maintain its distinctive and essential qualities while stretching to meet contemporary aesthetics and issues. The Batuan style of painting underwent its first dramatic shift in the 1930’s with foreign artists, new materials and an emerging art market making their prescience felt. The works of 22year old I Wayan Aris Sarmantra’s mark the second great shift in the Batuan style. Though clearly rooted in the aesthetic and thematic traditions of the Batuan School of art, these paintings also speak clearly of both local and global issues in a distinct personal style that breaks free from the more general characteristic of the Batuan style reaching towards a broader mode of expression. The very fact that Sarmantra has carved out such a unique style tells us something about the influence that the outside world has had on Bali in general and on this artist in particular. And while while Sarmantra is certainly not the first

Balinese artist to have developed such a distinctive style, his works are a particularly good example of how the most outstanding features of a traditional art practice can be elaborated on through the great talent of an individual to bring to life fine art that can be appreciated by a larger audience. The Batuan School of painting has been characterized by the somber tone of both colours and content, most often depicting scenes drawn from Balinese religious lore, filling the pictorial space with intricate drawings of the darker forces of life. While the paintings shown in Rebirth also draw on themes taken from Balinese religious lore, they are more that simple representation these scenes. Instead this iconography is taken as a point of reference to speak of broader issues.

The somber colours for which the Batuan style is known have been replaced with a stunningly colourful palette in Sarmantas works. This is not to say that the content of theses paintings lacks the somber quality for which this style is known, but more playful at times paradoxical modes of expression are used. Sarmantra’s depictions of the darker forces are presented more as light entertainment, perhaps speaking to the insidious way that these forces make their way into our lives or perhaps simply a

reflection of the general tendency of Balinese people to approach even the darkest aspects of life with a light heart. U.S., Japanese firms collaborating on new missile defence radars-sources

Those who are serious about cultivating mushrooms will sometimes search for good seeds outside of Bali to make sure that they are getting the quality they need.

SEMARAPURA — There is a large demand for mushrooms in the district of Klungkung and yet very few people there grow mushrooms. Most of the mushrooms consumed in Klungkung come from growers in Bangli. Made Juli Astuti is a mushroom seed seller from Pikat village, Pangi, Dawan, and she explained that the reason that resident of Klungkung are reluctant to cultivate fungi is because they think the process is complicated. Also, if people do not start off with good seeds, their crops may not be optimal which could cause them to suffer losses. “The harvest yield depends on the seeds. Those who are serious about cultivating mushrooms will sometimes search for good seeds outside of Bali to make sure that they are getting the quality they need” she said. Astuti who was working for

the Klungkung government saw a potential market and so she started to cooperate with a retired army official who has been selling mushrooms seeds in Singaraja since 2009. This cooperation proved to be a success and Astuti now sells 3,000 log bags of white oyster

mushrroms every 15 days. “ I sell each log bag for IDR 3,000. Since my mushrooms are are very good quality, I receive orders not only from around Klungkung, but also from Karangasem, Denpasar and other districts”, she explained. In order to explaind her busi-

ness, Astuti plans to open a nursery warehouse with a capacity of 10,000 log bags and also hopes to a “mushroom house” to provide consultation to farmers wanting to cultivate mushrooms. “ The profits from mushroom cultivation are pretty good, each IDR 3,000 bag can produce 100 grams of mushrooms every 15 days and be harvested up to six times. I usually sell 200 grams for IDR 5,000 to my office mates, but more to farmers” she said. Astusti added that cultivating

oyster mushrooms is not as complicated as people sometimes imagine. The newly purchased log bags must be place din a room with a temperature of 28-30 degrees Celsius and watered every two days in the afternoon when the roots have filled the bag ¾ full. “After 40 days, the mushrooms can be harvested. The hard part is making the mushroom seeds because they need to be fed a special formula. If the formula is not correct, the mushrooms grown from these seeds will not be suitable”, she concluded. Lelambatan gamelan music maestro in critical condition at Ari Santi ICU GIANYAR — Wayan Djebeg is one of the natural artists from Batur hamlet, Batubulan, Sukawati and has a wealth of experience as a maestro of lelambatan gamelan composing. He has toured all over Indonesia and received dozens of awards for his talent as a traditional music artist. Now 85 years old, Grandpa Djebeg as he is familiarly known has become ill and on Monday May 22 started undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Ari Santi Hospital in Mas village, Ubud. Grandpa Djebeg’s grandson, Wayan Eka Jaya Suputra, explained that the maestro’s is lying unconscious due to illness. “My grandfather is now being treated in the ICU, no one is allowed to visit except for the family”said Saputra

on Monday afternoon from the Wantilan Hall of Batubulan village, Sukawati. Grandson Saputra explained that Djebeg’s illness came on quite suddenly and that he was rushed to the emergency room of Ganesha hospital on Sunday May 14 at around 02:00. “ He received treatment there but since he was only diagnosed with an ulcer he was discharged a two hours later” said Saputra. A few hours after arriving home, at around 06:00 Grandpa Djebeg (husband of the late Ni Wayan Lembon) started convulsing, so his family immediately brought him to Ari Shanti hospital in Mas, Ubud. “The doctors told us that there seem to be a lesion on Grandpa’S head

and that he was suffering form obstruction of the uretha and that his nerves were not functioning properly”, explained his grandson. The doctors added that this was likely caused by fatigue brought on by the fact that despite the maestro’s advanced years, he continued to think about art activities. “Before this, our grandfather was never sick so he remained busy teaching gamelan music and attending a number of barong performances”, said Saputra. Wayan Djebeg started school at the age of 7 years but due to economic difficulties could not pursue his education past “sekolah rakyat” as it was called at the time – now known as elementary school. However, armed with great vivacity, diligence and hard work,

Djebeg became a gandrung (male dancer) in 1942. “Grandfather is a self-taught artist, creating works of art without the special guidance of an instructor and was the only person in his neighbourhood to start creating art” he explained. Djebeg’s artistic activities brought him to Europe and in 1999 Wayan Djebeg performed lelambatan gamelan compositions in India. Saputra added that his grandfather has become a well known lelambatan gamelan music maestro. “My grandfather told me that lelambatan gamelan music has in fact existed for a long time, but that his compositions added variety to this genre that made it popular in many artistic circles” explained Saputra. After wandering for a long time

in the field of traditional gamelan music, Wayan Djebeg finally married Ni Wayan Lambon and together they had seven children. After giving borth to Ni Wayan Darni their next two children died. Ni Wayan later gave birth to child Ni Ketut Nadi, I Wayan Sudiarti, Ni Made Kormi and Ni Nyoman Sukanti. When asked about government assistance for the lelambatan gamelan maestro known as Grandpa Djebeg, Saputra said that there has been none and that even now as this great maestro lies in the ICU of Ari Shanti hospital, no official from the district of Gianyar has visited the 85 year old artist. “We have not received any assistance of any kind, not even from the government” he concluded. U.S. starts “extreme vetting” at Australia’s offshore detention centres

SYDNEY - U.S. Homeland Security officials have begun “extreme vetting” interviews at Australia’s offshore detention centres, two sources at the camps told Reuters on Tuesday, as Washington honours a refugee swap that U.S. President Donald Trump had called “a dumb deal”. The Trump administration said last month the agreement to offer refuge to up to 1,250 asylum seekers in the centres would progress on condition that refugees satisfied strict checks. In exchange, Australia has pledged to take Central American refugees from a centre in Costa Rica, where the United States has expanded intake in recent years, under the deal struck with former President Barack Obama. The first security interviews finished last week at Papua New Guinea’s Manus Island detention centre, two refugees who went through the process told Reuters. The refugees told Reuters that interviews began with an oath to God to tell the truth and then proceeded for as long as six hours, with in-depth questions on associates, family, friends and any interactions with the Islamic State militant group.

“They asked about why I fled my home, why I sought asylum in Australia,” said one refugee who declined to be named, fearing it could jeopardise his application for U.S. resettlement. The security interviews are the last stage of U.S. consideration of applicants. Manus Island is one of two Australian-operated detention centres, which hold nearly 1,300 people who were intercepted trying to reach Australia by boat. Human rights groups have condemned the intercept policy and the harsh conditions of the camps. Australia says offshore processing is needed as a deterrent after thousands of people drowned at sea before the policy was introduced in 2013. A decision on the fate of the first 70 people interviewed is expected to be reached within the next month, a different source who works with refugees said.

A spokesman for Australia’s immigration minister refused to comment on the resettlement process. The U.S. State Department and White House did not immediately respond to questions. U.S. President Donald Trump’s plans for extreme vetting have extended to those travelling to the United States from Muslim countries. Australia’s relationship with the new administration in Washington got off to a rocky start when Trump lambasted Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull over the resettlement arrangement, which Trump labelled a “dumb deal”. Details of an acrimonious phone call between the pair soon after Trump took office made headlines around the world. Australia is one of Washington’s staunchest allies and has sent troops to fight alongside the U.S. military in conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. TOKYO - Raytheon Co and Lockheed Martin Corp are working with Japanese partners on rival projects to develop new radars that will enhance Japan’s shield against any North Korean missile strike, government and defence industry sources in Tokyo told Reuters. As nuclear-armed Pyongyang builds ever more advanced missiles with the ability to strike anywhere in Japan, Tokyo is likely to fund a ground version of the ship-based Aegis defence system deployed on warships in the Sea of Japan, other sources had said earlier. Raytheon is allied with Mitsubishi Electric Corp on the project while Lockheed is working with Fujitsu Ltd. The intent is to extend the range of Japan’s detection and targeting radars multiple times beyond range of models currently deployed at sea, the five government and industry sources said. “Japan’s government is very interested in acquiring this capability,” said one of the sources with knowledge of the radar plans. The sources asked not to be identified because they were not authorised to speak to the media. “Japan wants to have Aegis Ashore operational by 2023 at the latest,” said another of the sources. Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and Mitsubishi Electric declined comment, while Fujitsu did not respond to requests for comment. A spokesman for Japan’s Ministry of Defence said Tokyo did not currently have any concrete plans to collaborate with the United States on Aegis radars. “It is not our place to discuss the activities of corporations,” the spokesman added. The proposed Aegis Ashore radars would be variants of models already developed by Raytheon and Lockheed, the sources said. They would include components using gallium nitride, an advanced material fabricated separately by Mitsubishi Electric and Fujitsu that can amplify power far more efficiently than conventional siliconbased semiconductors. Nuclear-capable North Korea has a fast accelerating missile development programme and Japanese officials have been worried that its ballistic missile defences (BMD) could be overwhelmed by swarm attacks or be circumvented by warheads launched on lofted trajectories. In the latest snub to demands it end its weapons programme, North Korea on Sunday fired what it described as a intermediaterange ballistic missile that flew about 500 km (311 miles), falling into waters off its east coast. It had tested another missile the previous Sunday. North Korea said that launch tested the capability to carry a “large-size heavy nuclear warhead” and put the U.S. mainland within “sighting range.” Japan would likely need three Aegis Ashore batteries to cover the whole country, each of which would cost around $700 million without missiles, one of the sources said. BRUSSELS — Europe’s economic recovery is showing surprising strength, as key surveys of business activity and optimism hit their highest levels in years. The data released Tuesday hold out hope that the region is set to see a sustained and marked decline in its unemployment rate from the current 9.5 percent. And the good economic news could well add pressure on the European Central Bank to signal a withdrawal of its extraordinary stimulus measures. One of the indicators the ECB looks at when assessing its policy stance is the monthly survey of business activity from financial information company IHS Markit. Once again, it was strong, with the purchasing managers’ index — a broad gauge of economic activity — for the 19 countries that use the euro currency unchanged at a sixyear high of 56.8 in May. The results are consistent with quarterly economic growth of 0.6-0.7 percent, higher than the first quarter’s 0.5 percent growth. Chris Williamson, IHS Markit’s chief economist, says the consensus forecast for second-quarter growth of 0.4 percent may prove “overly pessimistic.” He also noted that job creation has surged to the secondhighest in nearly a decade as firms expand capacity and meet rising demand. The strong purchasing managers’ survey comes on top of the 26-year high reached by Germany’s Ifo monthly confidence index. It rose to 114.6 points for May from 113.0 in April. Economists had forecast that it would increase, but only to 114.1. Ifo said that was the highest

figure since 1991 and, along with other data, points to growth of 0.6 percent in the second quarter, matching the quarter-on-quarter growth figure of 0.6 percent for the January-March period. “Today’s strong German data add to the evidence that, not only the German economy, but the entire eurozone economy could become the positive growth surprise of 2017,” ING-Diba economist Carsten Brzeski said. “This sentiment is also spreading across financial markets, with many market participants now realizing that the eurozone economy had been written off too early.” The eurozone grew 0.5 percent in the first quarter compared to the quarter before, and 1.7 percent compared to the yearago quarter. Germany has been the main engine behind the region’s recovery from recession which began four years ago. It’s been buoyed by strong exports of its cars and machinery. style and costume of Janger Menyali changed under the influenced of other arts including “Janger Kreasi”. “The songs and dance movements are similar but the costumes for “Janger Kresi” are quite different. Janger Menyali is rarely ever performed anymore and was on the verge of disappearing all together before this reconstruction was put together. There was one staging of this dance not too long ago in Lombok”, said Headman Harta. The reconstruction of Janger

Menyali started in Febuary 2017. It was considered to be important to revive this dance as it is believed to be a sacred dance (sanghyang dance). Harta and others are therefor committed to preserving the Janger Menyali dance. “We have to preserve this ancestral heritage from the Dutch era. S.Korea fires at suspected drone at border with North amid missile crisis

SEOUL - South Korea’s military fired warning shots at a suspected drone from North Korea on Tuesday amid tension over Pyongyang’s latest missile test which drew international condemnation and a warning from China.

The identity of the object remained unclear, the military said, but Yonhap news agency said it was possibly a drone, more than 90 shots were fired in return and it disappeared from radar screens. The incursion came with tension already high on the Korean peninsula after the North’s test-launch of a ballistic missile test on Sunday which Pyongyang said proved advances in its pursuit of building a nucleartipped weapon that can hit U.S. targets. The United States has been trying to persuade China, North Korea’s lone major ally, to do more to rein in North Korea, which has conducted dozens of missile launches and tested two nuclear bombs since the start of last year, in defiance of U.N. Security Council sanctions and resolutions. The North has made no secret of its plans to develop a missile capable of striking the United States and has ignored calls to halt its weapons programmes, even from China. It says the programme is necessary to counter U.S. aggression. “We urge North Korea to not do anything to again violate U.N. Security Council resolutions,” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in a statement posted on the Foreign Ministry’s website on Tuesday. “At the same time, we hope all parties can maintain restraint, not be influenced by every single incident,

...persist in carrying out Security Council resolutions on North Korea and persevere with the resolution of the issue through peaceful means, dialogue and consultation.” Wang was responding to reporters’ questions on Monday while in Ivory Coast, according to the statement. Security Council condemned the launch and again expressed its concern over the North’s behaviour. The Security Council is due to meet behind closed doors later on Tuesday. Ahok dropped appeal for interests of all: Veronica Tan

Two men publicly caned in Indonesia for having gay sex

BANDA ACEH - Religious police in Indonesia caned two men for gay sex on Tuesday, with hooded men inflicting 82 lashes on each of them as hundreds of people watched the punishment ordered by an Islamic court. Cheers and applause went up from a crowd gathered outside a mosque in the city of Banda Aceh, capital of the conservative province of Aceh, as the masked men took turns to flog the pair on a raised platform. The men stood quietly, their heads down, as spectators heckled them and shouted insults. The punishment, condemned by rights groups, marked the first application of anti-homosexuality laws introduced in the province in 2014. Aceh has long had a reputation as Indonesia’s most conservative region. It is the only province that criminalises same-sex relations and that uses Islamic law as its legal code in addition to the national criminal code. Up to 1,000 people, many filming with smartphones, watched as the two men received 82 lashes each. Many others watched the punishment being meted out on a livestream video. Some in the crowd carried banners rejecting the presence of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community in Aceh. “I hope there won’t be any more such cases of homosexuality, it is shocking,” said Eni Tri Ret-

naningsih, a 20-year-old student who said she had watched others caned before for other offences such as adultery. At least eight other men and women were caned for other offences ahead of the punishment of the two found guilty of having gay sex. Police separated men and women in the crowd as proceedings began, with 10 men in brown robes and hoods preparing a bundle of canes in case any broke during the flogging. UNDER PRESSURE

The beatings were delivered on the clothed backs of the men and women, some of whom cried out in pain with each stroke. In some cases, the caning was suspended briefly if the offender signalled they were in too much pain. At the end of the lashing, the two men were helped off the platform. They were free to return to their families, authorities said. Aceh is Indonesia’s most westerly province, on the northern tip of Sumatra island, where Islam first took hold in the archipelago. The province caned 339 people in 2016 for a range of crimes, according to Human Rights Watch. Indonesia has the world’s largest population of Muslims but is officially a secular country. Former MotoGP champion Hayden dies after cycling accident ROME - Former MotoGP champion Nicky Hayden has died five days after the American was hit by a car while cycling in eastern Italy, his Honda World Superbike team said in a statement on Monday. “It is with great sadness that Red Bull Honda... has to announce that Nicky Hayden has succumbed to injuries suffered during an incident while riding his bicycle last Wednesday,” the team said. “Nicky passed away at 19.09 (local time) this evening at Maurizio Bufalini hospital in Cesena. His fiancee Jackie, mother Rose and brother Tommy were at his side.” The 35-year-old had been in intensive care with severe brain damage since he was struck by a car while training on his bicycle along Italy’s Adriatic Coast. The force of the impact shattered the car windscreen. MotoGP promoters Dorna joined in tributes from across the world of motorsport for the ‘Kentucky Kid’ who won the 2006 world title for Honda. “A true Champion on and off track, Hayden will be deeply missed,” they said. “Hayden will be deeply missed by the paddocks he has graced throughout an incredible career, his millions of fans around the world, and by all those closest to him.” The last medical bulletin from the

hospital, dated May 20, said Hayden remained in a critical condition. The hospital had previously said he had suffered serious brain damage in the accident. Hayden last raced in the MotoGP championship in Spain in September 2016 as a stand-in for injured Australian Jack Miller at the privately-run Marc VDS Honda team. He started 216 races between 2003 and 2015, winning three. “Although this is obviously a sad time, we would like everyone to remember Nicky at his happiest riding a motorcycle,” said his brother Tommy in the team statement. “He dreamed as a kid of being a pro rider and not only achieved that but also managed to reach the pinnacle of his chosen sport in becoming world champion. We are all so proud of that.” Italian newspapers reported on Monday that investigators had found video of the accident from a camera on a house overlooking the road. WHEN the ATP Race standings were updated this week Andy Murray, the world number one, languished down at 13th. It is not a statistical anomaly either. Unlike the actual world ranking that is a rolling 12-month points total, the Race standings are a gauge of form since January when everybody starts on zero. On current form 13th is probably generous. With the French Open starting on Sunday, Murray has accrued 1,210 to the 4,915 of Rafael Nadal and looks a pale imitation of the player who won his last 24 matches of 2016 to knock Novak Djokovic off his pedestal and seize power in men’s tennis. Not since Pete Sampras in 1999 has a world number one had a worse start to a year with Murray’s win percentage at a fairly modest 70.8 percent -- a figure that actually disguises just how bad the slump has become of late. There was an encouraging run to the semi-finals in Barcelona where he lost to Dominic Thiem but in

Madrid, where he went down with a whimper against Borna Coric, and in Rome where he was defending champion he was outclassed by Fabio Fognini. Last year, when Murray won nine titles including a second Wimbledon, a second Olympic title and the ATP Tour Finals in London, he suffered nine losses all season. This time his win-loss record reads 16-7 and it’s only May. Murray seems muddled and at a loss to explain his struggles. But with a huge haul of ranking points to defend in the next couple of months, starting at Roland Garros where he lost to Djokovic in last year’s final after his best claycourt season, he needs a solution fast. “There is no reason for it from my end,” Murray said. “I’m just not playing good tennis and I need to try and work out how to turn that around. Last couple of weeks have been a struggle and a long way from where I’d like to be.” It is the nature of the defeats that

is most surprising. At the start of the European claycourt swing in Monte Carlo Murray lost to Spaniard Albert RamosVinolas having led 4-0 in the final set. In Madrid he was bullied by the 20-year-old Coric and in Rome he was flattered by the 6-2 6-4 scoreline against an inspired Fognini. Earlier in his career Murray was criticised for being too passive with his game -- a preference for playing counter-attacking tennis based on rock-solid defence and superhuman court coverage rather than taking it on. With the help of coach Ivan Lendl, he became more forceful, leading to breakthrough titles at the 2012 U.S. Open and Wimbledon in 2013 and Lendl’s second stint as coach spurred Murray to become world number one. However, he seems to have slipped back into lock-down mode and has paid the price especially against aggressive opponents who enjoy playing on the front foot such as Thiem and Fognini. (rtr)

So long, Wayne?: Cup final may be Rooney’s last United game

MANCHESTER — Wayne Rooney could finish his Manchester United career by hoisting a European trophy, surrounded by jubilant teammates and with fireworks exploding around him. Still, it wouldn’t be quite the end he would have envisioned after 13 years at the English club. Rooney is set to be a substitute for United on Wednesday in the Europa League final against Ajax in Stockholm, a role which the club’s captain and record scorer has become increasingly accustomed to this season. Depending on the situation in the match, he might not even come on. That’s how it’s been for most of this season, watching from afar at a club where he was once the main man. Talk about United’s key players ahead of a final that means so much to the English club, and many would say Marcus Rashford or Paul Pogba or Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Few would say Rooney. That’s the reason why this game might be his last for United despite having two years left on his contract, why he has been linked for much of the past few months with a return to former club Everton, a move to MLS in the United States, or a short spell in the Chinese league. United is moving on under Jose Mourinho and Rooney is being left behind. Speculation grows that James Rodriguez will be moving to Old Trafford from Real Madrid, adding to the list of attackers who will be ahead of Rooney in the pecking order next season. There was a symbolic moment Sunday on the final day of the Premier League season. Rooney was one of the few senior players picked for a virtually meaning-

less match against Crystal Palace — Mourinho rested most of his Europa League starters — and he was replaced in the final minutes by 16-year-old attacking midfielder Angel Gomes, who became the first player born this millennium to play in the Premier League. Rooney applauded all corners of Old Trafford and walked off with his head down. Was he saying goodbye to the stadium he has played at since 2004, when — at 18 — he made a spectacular debut by scoring a hat trick in a Champions League game against Fenerbahce? Since then, he has racked up 253 goals for United to surpass Bobby Charlton’s longstanding club record. He is also England’s record scorer with 53 goals, again overtaking Charlton. He has won the Premier League title five times, the FA Cup once, the League Cup three times and the Champions League once. That last trophy came in 2008 when he was part of the famous frontline containing Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez. Rooney is no longer the force of old, unable to influence matches in the same way or tear around the field harassing opponents. Games can pass him by and there is the fear that, after 15 years in the spotlight of the soccer world, he is simply burnt out. In his last appearance at a news conference, prior to the second leg of the Europa League semifinals against Celta Vigo, Rooney said his priority at this stage of his career was to “play football.” When asked if that meant at United, he added: “Of course.” He will end this season likely having started 25 of United’s 64 games. Often, he was an unused substitute. Mourinho said he would not sell Rooney against his wishes, so it is for the player to decide if Wednesday is the last time he dons a United jersey. Whether he actually makes it onto the field remains to be seen. (ap)

Despite an average age of 22, the Dutch side led by manager Peter Bosz have displayed no sign of nerves in beating Schalke 04 and Olympique Lyonnais to reach their first European final since 1996. “They have played the same system. They have the same philosophy and they know what to do when the game starts,” Van der Sar told the Times. “Sometimes you know what they can do but in other clubs they don’t get the opportunity to show it. At Ajax, you get the opportunity. “You saw it in the games against Schalke (in the quarter-final) and Lyon (in the semi-final). I never saw in those

games that these boys could not play in the final.” Ajax have often had to sell their best players to richer rivals in England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. And while 19-year-old striker Kasper Dolberg and captain Davy Klaassen have already linked with moves at the end of the season, Van der Sar said academy prospects were already groomed to replace any outgoing players. “At a certain point, at 24-25, they are ready to take the next step to a different club and we know that. Ex-Barcelona president Rosell held in money laundering probe

MADRID — Spanish authorities say former Barcelona president Sandro Rosell and his wife have been detained in a probe over his businesses in Brazil. The detentions early Tuesday are part of a money laundering investigation related to buying television rights for past matches of Brazil’s national team.

Three other people have been detained, but their identities were not immediately released by authorities. Police raided offices, homes, and businesses in Barcelona and other locations in Spain as part of “Operation Rimet,” in reference to former FIFA President Jules Rimet.

Authorities said the operation used information from the FBI following the U.S. case against high-level FIFA officials in 2015. Rosell is already standing trial for fraud and corruption charges involving the 2013 transfer of Brazilian striker Neymar. (ap)
