In fourth was “Super Troopers 2” -- the longawaited sequel to the 2001 film about a ne’er-do-well group of cops -- in which the protagonists are tasked with replacing a Mountie unit in a Canadian town that is found to be part of the US. The partially crowd-funded film made $14.7 million on its first weekend. NEW YORK - After a prolific half-century in music that has earned him the unofficial title of America’s foremost living composer, Philip Glass could be forgiven if he were to decide to slow down. But the 81-year-old not only remains active, he is determined to challenge himself. Far better known as a composer, Glass believes it is crucial also to be a performer. Glass this month is making his long-awaited performance debut at the Kennedy Center, the national monument to the performing arts in Washington, which has long showcased his work but where he has yet to play. He will take to the piano and

keyboard for two of his works, including the soundtrack to the experimental film “Koyaanisqatsi” as part of Direct Current, an inaugural festival at the Kennedy Center exploring contemporary music. “I actually like playing,” Glass told AFP, adding that he feels fortunate not to have become afflicted by arthritis or other scourges of age. “I think it’s a very good reality check for composers to play your own music in front of all kinds of publics.” Glass said that performing at top venues such as the Kennedy Center or Carnegie Hall in his home of New York amounted to a kind of acceptance. French MPs adopt controversial immigration bill

France’s National Assembly has adopted a controversial immigration bill that speeds up the asylum process and accelerates deportations after a fierce debate that exposed divisions in President Emmanuel Macron’s party. After 61 hours of discussion, the legislation, which was slammed by the left as too tough and the right as too soft, was approved late Sunday by 228 votes in favour to 139 against. Fourteen members of Macron’s centrist Republic on the Move (LREM) party were among the 24 MPs who abstained, and one dissident quit the LREM parliamentary group after joining the naysayers -- a rare display of defiance in the usually on-message movement. Jean-Michel Clement, a former member of the Socialist Party who joined Macron’s party last year, said he had voted with his “conscience”. Opposition was strongest on the right, with the conservative Republicans and far-right National Front (FN) leading a failed charge for much tougher controls on immigration. FN leader Marine Le Pen, who won 36 percent of the vote in last year’s presidential election run-off, said the law would lead to a “flood of migration”. But NGOs were also up in arms. Fuzzy crab, shiny-eyed shrimp discovered on Java expedition

SINGAPORE - A hermit crab, a shiny-eyed shrimp and a crab with fuzzy spines are among over a dozen new species discovered in a deep-sea expedition off the Indonesian island of Java, scientists said. The team from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) carried out the expedition for 14 days between March and early April. The area covered included a long stretch of the Indian Ocean off Java’s southern coast as well as the Sunda Strait that separates the island from Sumatra. “This is a part of the Indian Ocean that has been never been sampled for deep-sea animals so we really didn’t know what to find,” said Peter Ng, a crab expert and head of the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum at NUS. “We were very surprised by the findings,” he told AFP on Thursday, adding that the team had expected to discover creatures from the Indian Ocean and the surrounding areas already known to scientists. But the discovery of species entirely new to science “tells us that there are things happening in that part of Indonesia that we don’t know,” said Ng, who co-led the expedition. The researchers examined 63 sites as they sailed from Jakarta to Cilacap town in southern Java and back. Three new species of spider crabs were discovered during the expedition, the scientists said in a statement. One of them had a plate protecting its eyes which resembled oversized ears while another was bright orange in colour. Another discovery was a new species of hermit crab with bright green eyes, according to Indonesian scientist Dwi Listyo Rahayu, also a crab expert and the expedition’s co-leader. One new species of shrimp had shiny eyes that reflect light, the scientists said. Ng, the NUS professor, said the scientists will carry out a detailed study of the more than 12,000 creatures from 800 species they had picked up on the expedition and publish their findings in 2020. They expect to discover more new species as they go along, he said. The reason they immediately identified the new species of crabs, prawns and lobsters is that the scientists involved are experts in this field, he added. (afp)

Ants that ‘explode’ to fight foes discovered on Borneo

To prevent it from extinction, the people of Dalem Tamblingan four customary villages recently began to move and make an effort restore one of the orchid species. People did it by re-planting the local stems in the forest habitat belonging to Buyan-Tamblingan Nature Tourism Park. that Amerta Jati forest serves as the endemic habitat to this family. Since the past, this forest constitutes a buffer of Lake Tamblingan along with the wealth of flora and fauna in the vicinity. Unfortunately, since around the 2000s this orchid population began to be getting rare. It is said to happen because at that time many people were looking for the stalks of the local orchids into the forest. Alice Laciny, a scientist from Vienna Natural History Museum who was involved in the study, said the ant “explodes” by contracting “its body until enough pressure is built up to tear the body wall, then the secretion exits with a small squirt or pop”.

She told AFP that such a phenomenon was “very rare in nature” and only a handful of “social” insects -- such as ants and bees -- were known to sacrifice themselves in such a fashion. “The colony is like a superorganism and the individual animal like a cell in a body with its special role to play,” she said. The new ant species, which lives in trees, will be an important point of reference for future study, said the researchers. Joint personnel consisting of all units in the district police and subdistrict police will be prepared for the success of the IMF-World Bank Annual Meeting 2019 to be held in Bali. The training provided by native instructor includes basic English-language course starting from self-introduction to problem solving. Chief of Jembrana Police, Priyanto Priyo Hutomo, and a number of officers appeared to mingle with other personnel to attend the course. In addition to police elements, the training was also followed by personnel from the Health and Fire Agency as well as municipal police of Jembrana. “This training is meant to provide services for foreigners, both

tourists and IMF-World Bank delegates making emergency call to number 110 of Jembrana Police. At least, they master Basic English language,” said Priyanto on the sidelines of the training. The personnel must be prepared from the beginning to succeed the international event in Bali. “We prepare them to secure and serve, including when the delegates are in Jembrana territory,” he added. Of the total 70 participants, some actively interacted. By directly bringing in native instructor, the participants can practice their English orally. Thousands of delegates from 189 countries will be coming to Bali to attend the IMF-World Bank annual meeting next October. There is possibility if the activities will also be conducted in West Bali. Buleleng Beach still eroded along dozens of kilometers

SINGARAJA - Until these days, the coastal damage in Buleleng due to abrasion cannot be thoroughly handled. Evidently, from the length of the beach in this region of 172,301 kilo meters approximately 29.33 kilometers of coast line remains to get eroded. Constraint of handling the abrasion happens due to inadequate budget. It is exacerbated by the condition where local government does not allocate any budget to handle the abrasion in the region. This happens because the authority policy of managing coastal area lies in the province. In accordance with the data collected in the field, since the emergence of coastal abrasion, the central government

assigned the Bali-Penida River Agency (BWS) to overcome the damage to the beach due to the abrasion. Based on the record of 2015, the coastal area of Buleleng spreads along 172,301 kilometers from Tejakula subdistrict in Gerokgak subdistrict. Of the total length of the beach, BWS found that along 69.96 kilometers of the beach in North Bali are hit by abrasion. This damage spreads with varying degrees from light, moderate to severe abrasions. Aside from eroding the land belonging to residents, the coastal abrasion itself also damaged the temple environment and venue of melasti ritual. Not only that, the damage to the coastal edge also damage tourist areas like in Buleleng as happened in Air Sanih bathing pool, Bukti village, Kubutambahan.

So far, the BWS has handled the abrasion. As indicated by the latest data, the handling of coastal abrasion in Buleleng has been done along 40.63 kilometers. With that result, the BWS has the ‘remaining’ length of abrasion to be handled as long as 29.33 kilometers. When contacted on Sunday (Apr. 22), Unit Working Chief of the BWS, Putu Edy, said the handling of coastal abrasion cannot be left entirely to the BWS. Although local government no longer has the authority to manage coastal areas, the other relevant stakeholders is expected to participate in resolving the issues. To that end, the BWS through the Coastal Management Coordination team is now still discussing about the support of the government, private sector and community so as to participate according to the ability to handle. “The matter of authority is being reviewed by the BWS team. In essence, the handling of abrasion needs the support of government, private sector and local communities. If everything is submitted to BWS, it certainly cannot work on all the coastal damages occurred in this area,” he said. He said that technically the abrasion occurs because of reduced volume of sand on the verge of the beach. Such reduction can happen due to pounding of sea waves or other factors. The sand volume can actually be maintained if the watershed (DAS) from the upstream area runs with sedimentation that empties out into the beach in large volumes. However, from his observations, the supply of sedimentation from the watershed and the decreasing volume of sand on the beach are not the same, so the sea waves will be easy to crush the land on mainland. “Based on our observations and technical studies, the abrasion happens because the sand in the mainland increasingly reduces, so the sea waves erode the land on the mainland. If only the sedimentation supply from watershed to the beach is maximal, the sand volume on the beaches will be well maintained, so the abrasion reduces as well,” he explained. Meanwhile, the Head of the Buleleng Public Works and Housing Agency (PUPR), Ketut Suparta Wijaya, said although some beaches in the area are hit by abrasion the PUPR cannot do much to overcome. This happens because the management of coastal areas has been transferred to the province. If his agency allocates a budget for abrasion handling, he worried the program will violate regulations. “We have no authority. If budgeted, we worried to be blamed on. So we just wait for policies and handling program by those who are authorized to manage the coastal areas,” he said. (kmb38)

Being prone to drugs, BNNK targets Seminyak

MANGUPURA - Seminyak village received special attention from the Central National Narcotics Agency (BNN) because it is listed as a drug-prone area. To that end, the BNNP Bali and BNNK Badung will target to clear the area from the circulation of such illicit goods. Various efforts will be made to raise public awareness of the drug hazards and how to combat them. Head of the BNNK Badung, Ni Ketut Masmini, said on Sunday (Apr. 22) that Seminyak is recorded by BNN as a drug-prone area based on the data of high case disclosure in the region and the rehabilitated addicts are high enough. tigations and surveys conducted by BNN. “The data are obtained from police as well as BNNP Bali and BNNK Badung. From the results, Seminyak village is set as drugprone area,” he said. Following up the status, her agency with the BNNP Bali will work on Seminyak in cooperation with local government and related institutions. Each program on drug eradication owned by related agency will be integrated according to its capacity. Thus, it can realize Seminyak to be free from drugs. “Such condition is a negative impact of tourism. We will do this effort gradually. Kutuh village, for instance, formerly had the same status where it is prone to drugs.

After we handle together, finally the drugs can be eradicated. Ultimately, they are independent in fighting drugs,” she said. She said there are eight main indicators determining drug-prone areas namely the presence of drug case, crime or violence, drug dealers, production, users, evidence, drug entry points and courier or intermediary of the illicit goods. Meanwhile, the supporting factor is the presence of few night entertainment spots, residence with high privacy, high poverty rate, lacking of public facility and low social interaction of society. To make Seminyak clean from drugs in the future, the BNN program and its staff are expected to

be getting more effective so as to empower the community to be clean from drugs. In addition, there is firmness in the implementation of entertainment business permits so the operating hours must be in accordance with the specified time limit. Communities are expected to sit together with relevant agencies (local governments, law enforcement agencies, and the private sector) to find out the root causes and solutions. “Regent of Badung committed to implementing the P4GN to suppress drugs in Badung. Grief turns to anger over Kabul suicide attack

KABUL - Hundreds of grieving Afghans buried their loved ones in Kabul on Monday amid growing anger over a suicide attack on a voter registration centre that killed 57 people including children and wounded over 100. The bomber blew himself up on Sunday morning in a large crowd queueing to collect national ID certificates so they could register to vote in long-delayed legislative elections scheduled for October. The blast, which was claimed by the Islamic State group, caused carnage in the street in the heavily Shiitepopulated western neighbourhood. Pools of blood and body parts mixed with shattered glass, bloodstained ID documents and passportsized photos on the ground. More than 40 of the wounded, including children, were taken to a trauma hospital run by Italian NGO Emergency, which said at least 20 people required “major surgeries”. Anguish quickly turned to anger on social media as Afghans blamed the Kabul government for failing to protect its people -- a constant refrain after such attacks. “They (the government) arrests them and then releases them to kill innocent people,” Ahmad Ahmadi wrote on Facebook. A Facebook user called Aminullah posted: “This government is intentionally creating chaos to continue their term illegally. The only way forward is to vote and get rid of this corrupt government.” Another wrote: “We don’t know what the solution is; they keep killing people. Are you guys still going to vote? We voted last time to be killed now.”

Funerals for some of the victims began hours after the attack on Sunday and more people were buried on Monday. At one of the city’s largest Shiite cemeteries, hundreds of mourners accompanying half a dozen coffins entered the grounds on Monday morning. Around 10 freshly dug graves could be seen. The attack was the latest in a series of assaults on voter registration centres across the country, fuelling concern over the impact on turnout in the upcoming parliamentary and district council elections. Centres in the central province of Ghor and the northwestern province of Badghis have been attacked since voter registration began on April 14. Over the next two months, authorities hope to register up to 14 million adults at more than 7,000 polling centres for the parliamentary and district council elections. Officials have been pushing people to register amid fears a low turnout will undermine the credibility of the polls, which are seen as a test run for next year’s presidential vote. Independent Election Commission (IEC) spokesman Shafi Jalali said Sunday’s attack would not interrupt preparations. “We hold meetings with security forces almost every day and they have assured us that they will provide security for all voter registration centres,” Jalali told AFP. “The process has not been interrupted and it will continue.” But IEC member Mohazullah Daulati acknowledged that officials were concerned about security and low voter turnout. It is a herculean task exposing fake news before it spreads like wildfire in India, where an estimated quarter of a billion people use Facebook, WhatsApp and other social media platforms. Small teams of myth busters must compete with huge volumes of content being shared in a multitude of languages, in many cases by first-time internet users unskilled in discerning fact from fiction. Independent fact checkers know the stakes are especially high in India, where fake news has quickly ignited violence. Erroneous rumours of a salt shortage sparked panic across four states in November, triggering stampedes outside marketplaces that left one woman dead and countless injured. Angry mobs in eastern India beat seven men to death in May after they were accused of child trafficking in unverified messages circulated on social media. - Velocity creates veracity -

Govindraj Ethiraj, founder and editor of Boom, a fact-checking website, said his team encountered at least a dozen instances of fake news a day “that can cause serious harm”. “India is perhaps the only country where there are

such violent outcomes of fake news,” he told AFP. “The way it manifests itself in India, I don’t think it happens in any other country. We are worst affected by this menace.” Boom, which revealed the viral clip of the alleged child rape victim to be a fake, has just six people on its staff and is one of a handful of independent factchecking teams in India. Facebook this week announced a partnership with Boom to monitor state polls in Karnataka, its first such initiative in India, as the social media giant faces global scrutiny over its platform being misused to meddle in elections. India is one of the world’s largest and fastestgrowing internet markets, with just over a third of its 1.25 billion people connected to the web. Cheap data packages and inexpensive smartphones are bringing millions of new users online who are often unable to detect real news from fake, said Pratik Sinha, founder of “anti-propaganda site” AltNews. “Suddenly people, especially from rural areas, are inundated with information and are unable to distinguish what is real from what is not,” he told AFP. “They tend to believe whatever is sent to them.” Many of the hoaxes debunked by AltNews have incendiary potential: false allegations of low-caste Indians going on a destructive rampage, or Hindu women being taunted by Muslims in a hotbed state. Ethiraj said this content often swirled “in corners of the country that we don’t even know about”, going viral in one of India’s myriad regional languages. Dutch electronics giant Philips Monday posted a 27 percent drop in first quarter profits, hit partly by the costs of restructuring and some acquisitions as it evolves its portfolio. Net income fell in the first three months to 94 million euros ($115 million) compared to 128 million euros over the same period in 2017, the company reported in a statement. Best known for the manufacture of light bulbs, electrical appliances and television sets, the Amsterdam-based company has gradually pulled out of these activities in face of fierce competition from Asia. It focuses now more on high-end medical and health technology, such as computer tomography and molecular imaging, as well as household appliances. Sales in the first quarter stood at 3.9 billion euros, 2.0 percent down on 4.03 million euros in 2017. But the company stressed that was a comparable growth of 5.0 percent taking into account such issues as currency fluctuations, and the shedding of the Philips Lighting arm. “While there is more work to be done, 2018 started well,” said chief executive office Frans van Houten. Restructuring and acquisition charges came to a hefty 64 million euros in the first quarter of 2018, compared to just 24 million in the same period last year. Karadzic was born in the poor Montenegrin village of Petnjica in June 1945 -- the same year that Josip Broz Tito’s communist Yugoslavia came into being at the end of the World War II. In 1960 Karadzic went to ethnically mixed Sarajevo, where he studied medicine, met his wife Ljiljana and later served a year in prison for fraud. A keen poet, Karadzic was said to live a bohemian lifestyle and have Muslim friends, working as a football team psychiatrist and showing few nationalist tendencies. His professional mentor, psychiatrist Ismet Ceric, told the US TV programme Frontline that Karadzic had “a thousand different faces” and likely a personality disorder. “He doesn’t live in reality,” said Ceric. Police in the Tennessee city of Nashville said the suspect in the country’s latest mass shooting may have had “mental issues,” and the incident led the city’s mayor to issue an unusually blunt call for “comprehensive gun reform.” The Metro Nashville Police Department said Taurean Sanderlin, 29, Joe Perez, 20, and Deebony Groves, 21, were shot dead at the all-night Waffle House restaurant in the suburb of Antioch at 3:25 am (0825 GMT). The fourth victim, 23-year-old Akilah Dasilva, died in hospital. Meanwhile Shanita Waggoner, 21, and Sharita Henderson, 24, were wounded and taken to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. Police identified the suspect

as 29-year-old Travis Reinking and said he could be armed with a rifle and a handgun, after firing an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle at the restaurant, where he was nude except for a green jacket. James Shaw, 29, told a press conference that he and his friend had sat down in the diner after visiting a nightclub, when they thought a pile of plates had crashed. “I saw the Waffle House employees scatter. Then I looked back and I saw a person laying on the ground right at the entrance of the door,” said Shaw, wearing a brown suit jacket and with his right forearm bandaged. Shaw said he slid from his

table and moved toward the door, which the gunman was trying to enter after apparently firing through the glass. “I’m pretty sure he grazed my arm,” said Shaw. “I kind of made up my mind, because there’s no way to lock that door, that if it was gonna come down to it, he was gonna have to work to kill me.” As the shooter was either reloading, or the weapon jammed, Shaw ran and hit him with the swivel door, leading to a scuffle. “I managed to get him with one hand on the gun, and then I grabbed it from him and threw it over the countertop,” before getting the suspect outside, Shaw said. Vessel explodes in Seribu sand Islands, injuring nine people JAKARTA - A vessel exploded at the main quay of Panggang island in Seribu Islands district on Sunday morning, leaving nine people injured. “It`s true the vessel exploded on its engine,” Chief of the National Police Public Relations Division Inspector General Setyo Wasisto said in a short message text on Sunday. The vessel owned by the transportation office of the Seribu Islands district exploded when it was about to return to Pramuka island. All the victims have been rushed to a regional general hospital in Pramuka Island for treatment, he said. Police are still investigating the cause of the explosion.(ant)

The boat was drowned after crashing into a tank in the waters of the Sei Lumut, Commissioner Victor Sibarani, confirmed when contacted here. The entourage in the boat survived, but Chandra went missing, Sibarani disclosed. Chandra embarked the wooden boat after attending the wedding party of the second child of Labuhanbatu District head in Panai Hilir sub-district. Chandra`s body was brought to the Tanjung Sarang Elang area in Panai Hulu sub-district and arrived at the location at 10:20 a.m. local time. House speaker calls on govt to monitor money circulation

JAKARTA - Speaker of the House of Representatives Bambang Soesatyo has called on the government to watch closely money circulation ahead the simultaneous regional election and the Eid al-Fitr, to anticipate circulation of counterfeit money. “Because usually counterfeit money circulation will increase ahead the regional election and Eid al-Fitr,” Bambang Soesatyo said in a statement here on Sunday. Soesatyo made his statement in response to the disclosure of a syndicate that produce and circulate counterfeit money in Rp100,000 notes. The case has been investigated further by the crime investigation unit (Bareskrim) of the Indonesian Police. The House speaker has also called on the Finance Ministry, the Central Bank (BI) and the Counterfeit Money Eradication Coordination Agency (Botasupal) to monitor money circulation.

He also called on the public to increase awareness on counterfeit money circulation and only exchange their currencies in banks and authorized money changers. “The public must be aware of this, to minimize counterfeit money circulation,” he said, adding that the police should investigate the case thoroughly and impose appropriate punishment for the perpetrators. Previously, the police has named AP as a suspect in counterfeit money

circulation. He was allegedly funded the production of counterfeit money. Deputy Director of special economic crime Senior Commissioner Daniel Tahi Monang Silitonga said, AP has confessed he committed the crime to pay his debt. “Daniel said, the police has named three other suspects AK (56), AD (62), and AM (35) who played different roles to design and print the money. TOKYO - A successful Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang has “raised the bar” for Tokyo 2020, the International Olympic Committee said Monday, warning organisers to brace for difficult questions and criticism as the Games approach. IOC coordination commission chairman John Coates paid tribute to a “very, very successful” Games in South Korea as he started two days of meetings with Tokyo 2020 officials. “The bar has been raised for you,” said Coates as he recalled the “fantastic sporting achievement” and “historic moments with the two Koreas walking together”. With around two-and-a-half years until the Tokyo Olympics, Coates advised organisers that their preparation would come under increasing scrutiny. Tokyo came under fire from some quarters at a recent meeting of top sporting officials, who raised some “very pertinent questions”, Coates said. According to specialist outlet Inside the Games, around 10 world governing body representatives raised concerns over different aspects of the Games preparations at the meeting in Bangkok.

“You have to be prepared to answer these questions when they are raised and if you don’t, these are the sorts of things that can impact the confidence of our stakeholders in your ability to host the Games,” warned Coates. “That’s very hard to come back from when that momentum starts to build... when these questions come, they have to be answered,” stressed the Australian. After a difficult start -- with budgetary problems and a series of PR disasters -- Tokyo 2020 organisers say they have wrestled the Games back on track. “Everything is going very smoothly and I can clearly say that most of the competition venues are on track and they will be completed as scheduled,” said Tokyo 2020 chief executive officer Toshiro Muto in a recent news conference. Organising committee president Yoshiro Mori said Monday that “budget reduction is the highest priority action for us,” after fury over the high price tag of the Games. In December, organisers announced a “significant” cut of $1.4 billion in the budget, bringing the overall bill to 1.35 trillion yen ($12.5 billion). (afp)

The 25-year-old Spaniard was a winner from the pole in all five prior Austin races, taking his first MotoGP win at the track in 2013, and led qualifying for a sixth consecutive year. But Marquez only started fourth on the grid after a three-spot penalty for slow riding and disturbing Vinales on a fast lap in Saturday qualifying. Marquez jumped to second at the start, was in the lead before the first lap ended and stayed in front to the finish. “It was my strategy to start and just push,” Marquez said. “I didn’t have confidence to battle. I just push and open a gap and hopefully I go away. “A race like this is not normal. You don’t expect to get such a big lead.”

Marquez said he was ill and concerned he might not be up for a fight at the finish. “I felt a little bit sick and I didn’t know how I would feel at the end of the race,” Marquez said. “I was just pushing. Today after all the things I just wanted to get a lead and open a gap if it was possible.” Marquez, chasing his fifth career world MotoGP crown, jumped to second in the driver points standings, his 45 points one shy of Italy’s leader Andrea Dovizioso and four ahead of Vinales after the third of 19 season races. And that’s after Marquez was blanked earlier this month in Argentina. “I lose some positions in Argentina but I always felt I was there because I’m happy with the bike in all the conditions,” Marquez said. “Now we have to get ready and go to Europe where the tracks are a little bit different.” Marquez, who won his 10th consecutive MotoGP race on US tracks, started alongside Valentino Rossi, the Yamaha rider who finished fourth, after having knocked over the Italian icon in Argentina. But it is my opinion, the opinions of the players could be different.
