Sequels multiply in summer movie season

NEW YORK — “I’ll be back,” the line Arnold Schwarzenegger first uttered more than 30 years ago in that indelible manly monotone, belongs to the Terminator, of course. But it also might as well be the official slogan of the summer movie season. It’s the time of year when Hollywood’s older, reliable brands, with the tenacity of Schwarzenegger’s lethal cyborg, claw their way back onto the big screen in a popcorn parade of big-budget sequels, reboots and re-dos. That’s nothing new, but the extent of the sequel spinning is.

Cruise wows CinemaCon with look at ‘Mission’ stunts

LAS VEGAS — Tom Cruise revealed Tuesday at a surprise appearance at CinemaCon in Las Vegas that he actually hung off the side of an airplane in the film “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation.” The actor said he performed the stunt, which involved a massive Airbus A400M taking off and flying to 5,000 feet (1,500meters), eight times with a harness attaching him to the aircraft. Cruise said he was terrified throughout, having to worry about particles from the runway, jet fuel fumes and even birds. “I want to keep audiences on the edge of their seats,” he said. Cruise introduced two new clips from the film as part of Paramount

Pictures’ presentation to the nation’s theater owners previewing its upcoming movies. The first shows Cruise escaping from captivity with skillful martial arts moves alongside Rebecca Ferguson. The second is a comedic car chase with co-star Simon Pegg in the passenger’s seat. Ferguson and Pegg joined Cruise on stage but neither wore a microphone, making it even more clear that Cruise was the main event. The film is set to pen on July 31. CinemaCon is a preview of some of the year’s most anticipated fare and an assurance to the people who own the theaters that the big films will be making money for them. (ap)

The sequel expansion — as headlong as Tom Cruise in the “Mission: Impossible” movies — runs in all directions, stretching into prequels, second-try reboots, spinoffs and franchises that are less linear, roman-numeral progressions than (as in the brimming Marvel world) whole universes of overlapping characters: fantasy realms to visit, not just stories to follow. To fuel the proliferation, Hollywood is dipping ever deeper into its vaults: 10 of this summer’s most anticipated blockbusters have origins dating back more than three decades, including “Fantastic Four,” ‘’The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,” ‘’Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Terminator: Genisys,” the fifth film in the series created by James Cameron in 1984. Schwarzenegger is back to say that he’s back. Nostalgia and familiarity mingle with updated special effects and new cast members in these films to render something that hopefully feels fresh to moviegoers. As the “Fast and Furious” series (more profitable in its seventh installment than ever before) has proven this spring, the lifespan of the sequels no longer adheres to the old rules of inevitable decay — at least for now. The ever-lengthening life of franchises can make for

some strange off-screen realities, and not just for 67-year-old Terminators. “Mad Max: Fury Road” (May 15), is returning decades later with its original creator, the Australian director George Miller. “One of the most jolting experiences of my life was to go to SXSW and watch ‘Road Warrior: Mad Max 2’ in a newly minted print for the first time in 32 years and then showing scenes from ‘Fury Road’ all these years later,” says Miller. “It was a kind of a time travel. It was a strange but powerful experience.” There is blunt mathematics behind the proliferating franchises. The top six summer films at the box office in 2013 were sequels. Last summer, all of the top 10 movies were sequels, reboots or hailed from well-known properties. This summer, the box-office seems nearly certain to be led by “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (May 1), the sequel to the 2012 superhero team-up original, the highest grossing-summer movie ever. With $1 billion-plus in box office assured, the financial imperative is, of course, enormous. “Age of Ultron” writer-director Joss Whedon says “making more money would be swell,” but a creative purpose is still necessary.

“Magic Mike,” made for just $7 million, opened in June 2012 with a remarkable $39.1 million and went on to gross $167 million worldwide. A male stripper romp that winks to the real past of producer-star Channing Tatum, it returns July 1 with “Magic Mike XXL.” It’s the classic kind of sequel — a road trip — albeit one with an especially untraditional destination: a Florida stripper convention Tatum attended before his acting career took off. The premise still makes director Gregory Jacobs chuckle. “Magic Mike XXL” is joined by a handful of sequels that come from fairly recent films: the teen musical “Pitch Perfect 2” on May 15; the “Despicable Me” spinoff “Minions” on July 10; Seth MacFarlane’s comedy “Ted 2” on June 26. But the bulk of the summer season will depend on older franchises, some of which are counting on moviegoer amnesia. (ap)

BRUSSELS — European Union leaders could double their spending on saving lives in the Mediterranean and use military resources to capture and destroy vessels that they suspect will be used for trafficking, according to a draft agreement prepared for an emergency summit Thursday called after hundreds of migrants drowned in the space of a few days. The latest draft statement, obtained by The Associated Press, would pledge the 28 nations to “increase search and rescue possibilities” and to “undertake systematic efforts to identify, capture and destroy vessels before they are used by traffickers.” It said EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini would immediately start preparing an operation that would likely have a military component. “We will take action now. Europe is declaring war on smugglers,” said the EU’s top migration official, Dimitris Avramopoulos, who was in Malta to attend the funeral of 24 migrants who perished at sea. Italian Premier Matteo Renzi agreed. “European Union naval operations in the Horn of Africa have successfully fought piracy — and a similar initiative must be developed to effectively fight against human

trafficking in the Mediterranean,” Renzi wrote in a New York Times opinion piece. “Trafficking vessels should be put out of operation.” A civil-military mission to do the job would face many legal hurdles and already proved controversial ahead of the summit. The draft statement also said the nations want to “set up a first voluntary pilot project on resettlement, offering at least 5,000 places to persons qualifying for protection.” That resettlement plan would amount to about half of the number which arrived in just the last week and a tiny fraction of the tens of thousands likely to arrive this year. The draft statement also proposes cutting the time needed to process would-be migrants, which can now take up to a year before a person is processed and deemed

legitimate to stay. Under the plans that would be cut to as little as two months. The leaders are under great pressure to react after more than 10,000 migrants were plucked from seas between Italy and Libya in a week. EU President Donald Tusk urged the summit “to agree on very practical measures,” including “strengthening search-and-rescue possibilities, by fighting the smugglers and by discouraging their victims from putting their lives at risk, while reinforcing solidarity.” The leaders are also to assess a concern raised by U.N. secretarygeneral Ban Ki-moon, who called for a stronger EU search-and-rescue operation and more legal migration channels. “We all have a moral imperative to act swiftly,” Ban says in a letter to Tusk obtained by The Associated Press. EU officials say the leaders will commit to doubling the size of the European border agency effort in the Mediterranean, but those operations are designed for monitoring migrant movements, not necessarily saving lives. and Doctors Without Borders want a multinational rescue effort launched to help the thousands fleeing conflict and poverty from places like Syria, Eritrea and Somalia. “The stakes are very high. The number of hours, literally, that it takes to take action will make the difference between life and death,” Iverna McGowan, acting director of Amnesty’s European Institutions Office told The Associated Press. Some lawmakers are concerned that the leaders may stump up rescue assets while the media spotlight is on their summit, but that commitments to solidarity could quickly fade away, as they have in the past. “I fear that what will happen ... is that they will try to water down a few of the points and the actual reason why they are meeting — to urgently seek solutions to what is happening today — will not be the focus of the deal,” Roberta Metsola, the leading EU parliament lawmaker on migration, told the AP. According to the UN’s refugee agency, 219,000 refugees and migrants crossed the Mediterra-

nean last year, and at least 3,500 died trying. More than 1,000 are believed to have died already this month alone. Critics blame the increased deaths on the phasing-out of Italy’s big rescue operation in 2013-14, Mare Nostrum, which worked close to the coast of Libya — the biggest migrant transit route. A smaller EU mission dubbed Triton was left to fill the vacuum. It has no mandate for rescue work, although it does respond to distress calls under international obligations and has saved thousands of lives since its launch late last year. Amazing Giant Ribs at Favehotel Padjajaran

Gong kebyar placed at four points, spectators amuzed

FOR the first time a performance of gong kebyar was staged with the concept of nyatur desa. In other words, the gong kebyar played by children were placed in the four cardinal directions. This alternate placement of the performers that includesfour gong kebyar gamelan troupes is called nyatur desa in reference to the four cardinal directions. With four different stages, alternately performing, spectators have to rotate their position to see each performance. The nyatur desa gong kebyar performance was part of the the 244th anniversary celebrations of the town of Gianyar, which took place on Tuesday night (Apr. 21) in the Astina Raya Square. Stage one located in the west of the field (open stage) featured the Widya Kumara Kids Gong Kebyar troupe from Peninjoan village, Batuan, Sukawati, who were sent as Gianyar’s envoy to the in the 37th Bali Arts Festival (BAF) 2015, presented a gamelan composition entitled Tabuh Pat Lelambatan Cakra Wahyu and games. Stage two located in the north presented the Kembang Dharma Putra Gong Kebyar Troupe from Tulikup, Gianyar. Stage three located in the east, performed the Sapta Widya Budaya Art Studio from Guwang village, Sukawati, and stage four in the south presented the Kumara Panji Mas Kids Gong Kebyar Troupe from Belega village, Blahbatuh, Gianyar. The nyatur desa concept is a brand-new staging of gong kebyar. Until now, people only knew about the mebarung concept that involves two gamelan troupes. But now people can also enjoy the gong

kebyar art from that involves four gamelan troupes. Interestingly, the audience, situated in the middle of all four troupes, just needs to reorient themselves toward the stage that is active. A gamelan player from Blahbatuh, Jero Mangku Arsana, very much appreciated the nyatur desa concept. The concept is an innovation in the development of gong kebyar in Gianyar. This concept provides more opportunities for children to perform. In addition, the audiences gets to enjoy a new spectacle both in terms of gamelan music and dance as well. The gong kebyar art is staged as a spectacle meant to entertain the community. To that end, it is performed in a harmonious spirit -there should be no intention to seek victory or to taunt each other. “The gong kebyar show is meant for the audience not for the troupes to show off to each other” said Jero Mangku Arsana. I Wayan Sira, a spectators from Bona, assessed that the performance could be improved by moving the stages closer to one and other so that there could be more communication between the the

gamelan players. According to Professor and art critic Dr. I Wayan Dibia, the nyatur desa concept is a creative innovation made by art lovers in Gianyar and inspired by the Catus Pata or ‘central intersection’ which, in Bali is a symbol of the sacred cycle of time that turns around the four directions of the north, east, south and west. This new concept also indicates that the art of gong

kebyar, over 100 years that it has been around, has been able to provide a contribution to the community of the Island of the Gods. “Gianyar plays an important role in the development of gong kebyar in Bali. This new concept poses an innovative staging of pairing patterns of gong kebyar and provides la way for young people to learn about different styles of gamelan music compositio,” said Wayan Dibia.

Similarly, this concept is able to foster a vibrant competitive spirit in the performing arts of dance and gamelan music as well as able to rekindle the passion of the arts. In addition, it can inspire new developments in costume design and makeup art for the gamelan players who tend to be elegantly dressed with lively attire including modified headdresses, and sarong style. Amlapura — The production of broiler in Karangasem is often constrained by fodder. In addition, it is also hampered by the fears of the development and transmission of avian diseases such as the avian influenza. It was announced by the Head of the Karangasem Livestock, Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, Ketut Artama, in Karangasem, Wednesday (Apr. 22), responding to the limited supply of broiler in the market.

Artama said that the constraint of fodder happens due to the factories of fodder are in Java. Therefore, the supply and the price of fodder cannot be controlled by the government of Karangasem. “Production and distribution of chicken fodder is beyond our control. The supply of poultry feed is mostly carried out directly to the core of plasma farmers,” he said. Lately, the matter of day-oldchicken (DOC) production also

depends on the production in Bali. Breeders in Bali have not been allowed to bring in from Java. It is meant to anticipate and prevent the transmission of bird flu to Bali from outside the region. According to him, the broiler farming is carried out in Manggis subdistrict such as at Pesedahan and Nyuh Tebel as well as at other villages like Bugbug. BSMP celebrate the contributions made by women

GIANYAR - The 136th anniversary of the birth of the Indonesian heroine Raden Ajeng Kartini and her fight for human rights in colonial Indonesia is celebrated every April 21st. A Javanese woman of noble birth, Kartini championed women’s education and maintained an active correspondence with Dutch colonial officials, now preserved in print, defending the emancipation of women, and rallying against the stifling constraints imposed by both the colonial and traditional Javanese society on Indonesian woman of the day. Suffering a premature death in childbirth at the age of 25 in 1904, her letters published posthumously and her success in setting up a progressive school for Javanese girls just one year prior to her death have formed a lasting legacy in Indonesian history. Her teachings served as a precursor for the Indonesian independence and earned her a lasting notoriety in Indonesian history with her words and life story familiar to every Indonesian student more than a century after her death. In order to honor the role played by woman in modernday Indonesia and in the successful operation of the awardwinning animal park, the management and staff of the Bali Safari & Marine Park (BSMP) recently organized blood donor programs and free Pap smear examinations. Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

De la Renta unveils first bridal line since designer’s death

NEW YORK - Oscar de la Renta unveiled its first collection since the death of its founder with a beautiful debut of Latininspired elegance made fresh by British creative director Peter Copping. “In this, my first collection, I hope to honour Oscar’s legacy and also to start a new chapter for the house,” wrote Copping in a brief note. He was appointed just weeks before de la Renta’s death from cancer cut short their hopes of collaborating on the 2015 fall/winter collection. Copping said never having the chance to work with Oscar was “something I deeply regret” but said he was “immensely proud” to have been appointed. Hair was swept back in elegant chignons. There were beautiful skirt suits for the lady who lunches, high necklines and delicate bows at the throat, stylish fur coats in monochrome, or brown with a hint of orange. Lines were clean and elegant, full skirts were cut just above the knee. There were creamy, blue-flower prints, checks and tweed in white, black, red, burgundy, purple, orange and brown. Sequins, beads and fur-trim gave a refined, lady-like elegance.

The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) is an agreement among the ten ASEAN countries to open up the flow of goods, services and investment among the country members, without exception for tourism. “When facing the AEC, we from tourism sector are actually quite optimistic. Drizzles, building roof of SDN 2 Subagan collapses

Amlapura — Building roof of the SDN 2 Subagan elementary school suddenly collapsed amid the cloudy and drizzly condition, Wednesday afternoon (Apr. 22). The incident shocked the residents of Subagan village, Karangasem. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m., where it was first known by the local hamlet chief, Gede Suparda. Incidentally, the house of local hamlet chief is only separated by a border wall of the school. “I was surprised to hear the sound like a collapsing building from home. Having been checked out, in fact the school building collapsed,” he said when met at the school area. Building on the north, of the three main buildings in the school area, immediately drew the attention of hundreds of people at surrounding area. Residents had a closer look at the building condition at firsthand and then attempted to help evacuate valuable objects from inside the building. The school building facing south and extending from east to west consists of three rooms. The easternmost is used for teacher’s room, the middle for principal’s office and the westernmost room is used for the infirmary. Of the three rooms, the principal’s office suffered the most serious damage, where the point of damaged roof occurred

right above the room. The roof collapsed as triggered by the condition of old hood where the trestle is already fragile due to the age. “This building was last renovated in 1984,” explained Suparda amid the crowd of Subagan people. Principal of the SDN 2 Subagan elementary school, A.A. Gede Rai, was shocked to see one of the buildings collapsed. However, he ascertained that there were no casualties in the incident, while valuable objects such as three units of personal computer, four printers and a variety of important administrative documents belonging to teachers and principal could be evacuated. “Right now, only laser jet printer is left inside,” he said. This incident, he said, would be reported to the Karangasem Education Agency. He predicted the collapse of the building roof caused a loss of about IDR 200 million. Chief of the Karangasem Subdistrict Police, Anwar Sasmito, who came down to the scene on Wednesday afternoon asked residents or school authority not to go

into the room because the other buildings were worried to suddenly collapse as condition of the building construction is similar. A.A. Gede Rai added that his party will use the other building for the room of teachers and principal. He ascertained that the teaching and learning activities will not be interrupted by the incident. Besides, he hoped that the Karangasem Education Agency can help further the rehabilitation process, so that it can be used more quickly and the school condition will return to normal. The incident got the attention from the Karangasem Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) and the Indonesian Military (TNI). Some personnel were immediately deployed to the scene. Currently, the BPBD are on standby at all times because the weather condition has begun to deteriorate since the beginning of this week. Of the nine county police stations under the Bali Police, Denpasar Police were ranked first, followed by Gianyar and Buleleng. “For the 21 days before the operation, there were 73 cases of traffic accidents and 77 cases during the operation. Casualties decrease from 35 people, 23 people during the operation” he added. The majority of traffic accident occured in residential areas. Therefore, the Bali Police Chief hopes to build security awareness in these areas by providingg guidance to people, encouraging them to slow down, seeing as the police can be everywhere 24 hours a day. “Violations of traffic rules contribute in large part to incidents of accidents. BEIRUT — Several hard-line Syrian rebel groups pushed a new offensive against government forces in northwestern Syria on Thursday, less than a month after seizing control of the provincial capital there. The conservative Islamic factions, including the al-Qaida-affiliated Nusra Front, are coordinating a multi-pronged campaign whose main target appears to be the town of Jisr al-Shughour in Idlib province. Opposition fighters are also attacking government checkpoints in a sprawling agricultural plain south of the town as well as nearby military facilities. BUSINESS Global growth outlook steady despite oil fall, stimulus burst

LONDON/BENGALURU - A collapse in oil prices that gave a windfall to the world’s energy consumers and a flurry of policy easing from central banks might have been expected to brighten the outlook for global economic growth. But Reuters polls of more than 250 economists across Europe and North America show only modest upgrades to growth forecasts and a reluctance to relinquish a depressed inflation view, despite the rush of rate cuts and central bank cash that most respondents believe is far from over. The biggest policy change, sovereign bond buying by the European Central Bank that started in March, has lit a fire under European stock markets and government bonds but has boosted the economic growth outlook only a little. Germany’s DAX index has rallied more than 20 percent since the start of the year alongside a plummeting euro that has given way to an ascendant dollar. Most of Germany’s sovereign bonds are so expensive they are now paying a negative yield. And yet the expected quarterly growth rate for the euro zone has only

moved up to a modest 0.4 percent pace across the forecast horizon certainly better than prospects for no growth but not enough to make sizeable reductions in high unemployment. The outlook for inflation, which the ECB wants to get back from near zero to its target of just below 2 percent, is more benign for 2015 than it was at the start of the year before QE even began. And the spectre of Greece leaving the euro zone is hovering. “The world economy is looking increasingly surreal, so much so that

policymakers are really struggling to deliver the economic outcomes they’d ideally like to see,” noted Stephen King, chief global economist at HSBC. The consensus for global growth this year has fallen to 3.4 percent from 3.7 percent polled back in July, around the start of the collapse in oil prices that was meant to give a boost to consumer spending even while hurting major oil exporters. The outlook for 2016 has only risen by 0.2 percentage points over the same roughly nine-month period to 3.7 percent.

In the meantime, the dollar has soared over 20 percent against a basket of currencies. Economists singled it out as the biggest threat to growth this year in the United States, which has been leading the global expansion. The Federal Reserve appears strongly inclined to raise rates from the zero bound this year, but the latest poll shows that the expected start date keeps slipping as does how high rates are likely to climb over the coming year. German government raises 2015 growth forecast to 1.8 percent

BERLIN — The German government says it expects the country’s economy to grow by 1.8 percent this year, an improvement on its January forecast of 1.5 percent.

Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel says growth in 2016 is predicted to also reach 1.8 percent, up from the 1.6 percent previously predicted.

The figures are lower than those released by independent forecasters last week. Gabriel told reporters in Berlin on Wednesday that the government wants to “stay on the safe

NEW YORK — Coca-Cola reported a quarterly profit Wednesday that beat Wall Street expectations as the world’s largest beverage maker raised prices to offset slower growth. The maker of Sprite, Dasani, Powerade and other drinks said its global volume rose 1 percent, reflecting gains in both soda and non-carbonated drinks. In its flagship North America market, overall volume was flat. The company sold 1 percent less soda, reflecting the ongoing move away from traditional carbonated drinks. One recent drag on soda has been the fading popularity of Diet Coke. The drink declined 5 percent in the region, while Coke Zero, a newer diet soda, declined 1 percent, said Kathy Waller, Coke’s chief financial officer. “We’re doing a lot of work in North America to understand what’s going on,” Waller said of the decline of diet sodas. The overall soda decline in North America was offset by a 2 percent increase in noncarbonated drinks, such as bottled teas. Higher pricing helped drive up revenue.

Coca-Cola Co. says it is focusing less on volume growth and instead focusing on driving up revenue by mixing up the type of packages it sells. For instance, the Atlanta-based company has been pushing its mini-cans and glass bottles more aggressively, which are positioned as premium offerings and tend to fetch higher prices per ounce. Waller said the company is continuing to roll out the mini-cans more broadly in the U.S. The company has also said it would work on slashing costs to improve its financial performance amid slowing growth. CEO Muhtar Kent has called 2015 a “transition year” for the company. For the three months ended April 3, Coke said it earned $1.56 billion, or 35 cents per share. Not including one-time items, it earned 48 cents per share. That was more than the 43 cents per share analysts expected, according to Zacks Investment Research. One of the salt farmers, I Ketut Pula, when met near his hut at Lebah hamlet, Wednesday, admitted that he has no longer produced salt. Other than due to aging, the result is uncertain. Meanwhile, the demand for life need is getting higher in line with the soaring prices of basic necessities. “In the past, the salt farmer amounted to hundreds of people, but now only seven people still survive. They can hold out as it becomes a side job,” said Pula while taking his livestock in the area of traditional salt production. Not far from the hut, hectares of land seem to have been overgrown by bushes. Currently, their traditional device used to make salt only remain seven pieces. Its condition is already obsolete having been not in use for long time due to unfavorable weather condition for farmers to produce salt. “Now, it is still sasih kadasa (April). The auspicious time for them (seven salt farmers) to produce is sasih ketiga (September),” said Pula. Currently, many salt farmers switch profession into construction worker because the result is good to cover the family needs. “As a salt farmer, we are just able to earn money after four days.

Within four days, farmers can produce 40 kg of salt,” said Pula. The current price of salt is only IDR 3,000 per kg. The income from salt farming is considered inadequate to meet daily needs. The current result of salt farmers at Amed and Lebah hamlet has increased due to the assistance of a particular institution. And with the help, the local salt production had been exported to some countries such as France, Japan and Malaysia. Today, after many salt farmers have switched professions, most of the lands have been converted into buildings such as restaurants, cafés and tourist accommodation. Headman of Purwakerti, I Wayan Sentuni Artana, when contacted on Thursday admitted that formerly there were hundreds of salt farmers at Amed village coalesced into 80 groups. However, due to the lack of empowerment, one by one they eventually left the profession. Recognizing that salt farming poses one of the potentials owned by the village, his party claimed to make re-empowerment with certain institutions. “Salt production of farmers should be able to get a label or patent, so that the results can be recognized and have a higher selling price,” he said. The headman also hoped that local government can help them empower and revive the potential of salt farmers at Amed and Lebah hamlet. Memories haunt both sides of Gallipoli tragedy, 100 years on

GALLIPOLI, Turkey — Whenever he leaves the house, Kenan Ersoz hides the bayonet his father used to defend the crumbling Ottoman Empire against the British-led invasion of Gallipoli a century ago. The father saw it as a friend that kept him alive. The son keeps it as his most prized possession. The campaign is no less present for descendants of soldiers from Australia and New Zealand who played a leading role for the other side. John Carnell traveled from Sydney with his wife, Carol, and two children, Kate and Tom, to visit spots where his great-grandfather landed on the peninsula — and where he was mortally wounded months later. In the lottery to obtain tickets for the 100th anniversary commemoration this week, Carnell wanted his children to come more than he wanted to come himself. “People only really die when the living stop talking about them,” he said. “I can bang on about my ancestor for another 20 years or so. My children can do it for 50 and they can tell their grandchildren.” As world leaders gather Thursday and Friday with the descendants, the memories of one of the most harrowing campaigns of the 20th century have come surging back to life. The doomed Allied offensive to secure a naval route from the Mediterranean to Istanbul through the Dardanelles, and take the Ottomans out of the war, resulted in over 130,000 deaths on both sides. It came to be seen as a folly of British war planning. The campaign’s enduring poignancy may be that it forged national identities for countries on both sides.

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk used his prominence as a commander at Gallipoli, known as Canakkale to the Turks, to vault into prominence, lead Turkey’s War of Independence — and ultimately found the Turkish Republic. Similarly, the tragic fate of troops from Australia and New Zealand, who played a key role in the campaign, is said to have inspired an identity distinct from Britain. The anniversary of the start of the land campaign on April 25, known as ANZAC Day, after the Australia and New Zealand Army Corps, is marked as a coming of age for both nations. Carnell’s great-grandfather, Francis George Carnell, was so eager he had to lie about his age. That was a common ploy for teenagers of the day. But Francis was 55 — and too old to enlist. He had already fought in wars in South Africa for the British. After being promoted to lance corporal in training, he landed at what is now known as Anzac cove among the early waves of soldiers. On April 25, 1915, they were rowed in at dawn to narrow beaches with scant cover only to encounter rugged hills and scorching fire by well concealed Turkish defenders.

John Carnell knows little about what happened next, except that somehow his ancestor, despite his age, made it up the beach to fight in one of the iconic battles of the campaign. The fight for the Turkish position of “Lone Pine” — launched by Australian battalions — cost heavy losses on both sides. On Saturday, Australians will commemorate that battle following a dawn service at Anzac Cove, near a memorial with the names of dead soldiers, including. F.G. Carnell. On Aug. 7, Francis George Carnell was wounded and evacuated to a hospital ship. He died on Aug. 10, according to John Carnell, and was buried at sea. He left behind a wife and one son, who had thirteen children. That same summer, Mehmet Emin Ersoz — Kenan’s father — was also gravely injured. The father talked little of the war, and Kenan thinks it was because he wanted to spare the children his suffering. But there was no hiding it. “We could see the ugly side of war on my father’s body,” he said. “His feet were full of wounds. There were callused pieces between his flesh and bones.” (ap)

Some police in US looking to body cameras on their own NEW RICHMOND, Ohio — The dramatic body camera video shows the slaying suspect charging at the officer, screaming — pleading, even — for him to open fire. “Shoot me!” yells Michael Wilcox to the backpedaling officer, who keeps the suspect at bay until he ultimately surrenders when backup arrives. The widely circulated video from Officer Jesse Kidder’s own personal body camera illustrates not only the kind of life-or-death moments officers can face, but also how some in law enforcement are getting cameras on their own if their departments can’t. While some police around the United States have balked at the use of body cameras, saying they would subject them to an unreasonable level of monitoring, interest in supplying them to officers is growing. Studies of camera use by police in Rialto, California, and Mesa, Arizona, showed steep declines in citizen complaints and in use of force by officers. In the Ohio village of New Richmond, where Kidder’s restraint last week in the face of a potentially deadly suspect has drawn wide acclaim, police chief Randy Harvey said the video shows why he’d like to have the wearable cameras for all his officers. But he needs to figure out to pay for them, an issue for many departments, large and small. “It’s all out there for everybody to see — it eliminates any questioning or second-guessing or speculation as to what really occurred,” said Harvey, a police officer for more

India suspends Al-Jazeera broadcasts for 5 days over maps NEW DELHI — The TV network Al-Jazeera was off the air in India on Thursday following a 5-day suspension ordered by the government over maps of the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir. India is deeply sensitive about how Kashmir, which is divided between India and Pakistan but claimed by both, is portrayed on maps. A government report said that in the Al-Jazeera maps a portion of Kashmir had “not been shown as a part of Indian territory.” The suspension began Wednesday and is to last until next Monday. On Thursday, a message displayed on the Al-Jazeera channel said that

“as instructed by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting this channel will not be available.” The Qatar-based network condemned the suspension and asked for talks with the Indian government. According to Al-Jazeera, the maps were produced by outside software and were revised shortly after Indian authorities complained. “This ban is a disproportionate response to an issue that we fixed promptly after it was pointed out,” Al Anstey, managing director of AlJazeera English, said in a statement. “It needlessly deprives Indian viewers of our global news.” (ap)

INDONESIA Police probing death of witness in slavery cases

JAKARTA - Indonesian police are investigating the death of a local official in the Ministry of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs to see if it is linked to a slavery probe in the remote, eastern island village of Benjina, a government official said Wednesday. Yoseph Sairlela’s body was found Saturday at a hotel in a leafy neighborhood of the capital, said Asep Burhanudin, director general of sea and fishery resources. Although there was a wound on the side of the victim’s face and a bruise on his forehead, an initial examination determined that they were not the cause of death and Sairlela died of a heart attack, Asep said. He said the results of an autopsy are still pending and the police investigation is continuing. Minister Susi Pudjiastuti, meanwhile, has launched an internal investigation into the case, he said, noting that Sairlela was supposed to be a key witness in a case surrounding the use of forced labor by Thai-run fishing trawlers in Indonesia’s Maluku islands. Court rejects death row Ghanaian’s appeal JAKARTA - Indonesia’s Supreme Court has rejected an appeal by a Ghanaian on death row, an official said Wednesday, one of several foreign drug convicts expected to face the firing squad soon. Martin Anderson’s request for a judicial review was rejected on Tuesday, the same day the court dismissed an appeal by Serge Atlaoui, a Frenchman on death row, said a spokesman for the attorney-general’s office. Death row convicts can pursue appeals in other courts -- and several in the group facing execution are doing so -- but they are seen as having little chance of success, and authorities say such efforts simply amount to condemned prisoners seeking to buy time. “I give two thumbs up to the S u p r e m e C o u r t ’s d e c i s i o n , ” said spokesman Tony Spontana, referring to the rejection of Atlaoui’s and Anderson’s appeals. Spontana said he hoped they would not try any other “manoeuvres” to avoid their impending execution. There is now only one convict, an Indonesian, in the group of drug offenders who still has

an appeal outstanding at the Supreme Court, said Spontana, adding he hoped the legal bid would be rejected this week. In the agreement, President Joko Widodo lauded the Singaporean Government for the protection granted to Indonesian migrant workers and its citizens in Singapore. Singapore has become one of the largest contributors of foreign direct investment into Indonesia during the last five years. participants in the war armed with thorny pandanus leaf. If you want to watch, simply come in June precisely at two o’clock in the afternoon. Pandanus war is a form of respect showed by the villagers to Lord Indra as the God of War. When the pandanus war is held,

all the villagers put on customary attires of Tenganan better known as Pegringsingan. Meanwhile, the participants of pandanus war put on sarong, shawl and headband. Before starting, the residents of Tenganan perform ngelawang procession or traveling around the village to beg salvation.

GALLIPOLI, Turkey — Whenever he leaves the house, Kenan Ersoz hides the bayonet his father used to defend the crumbling Ottoman Empire against the British-led invasion of Gallipoli a century ago. The father saw it as a friend that kept him alive. The son keeps it as his most prized possession. The campaign is no less present for descendants of soldiers from Australia and New Zealand who played a leading role for the other side. John Carnell traveled from Sydney with his wife, Carol, and two children, Kate and Tom, to visit spots where his great-grandfather landed on the peninsula — and where he was mortally wounded months later. In the lottery to obtain tickets for the 100th anniversary commemoration this week, Carnell wanted his children to come more than he wanted to come himself. “People only really die when the living stop talking about them,” he said. “I can bang on about my ancestor for another 20 years or so. My children can do it for 50 and they can tell their grandchildren.” As world leaders gather Thursday and Friday with the descendants, the memories of one of the most harrowing campaigns of the 20th century have come surging back to life. The doomed Allied offensive to secure a naval route from the Mediterranean to Istanbul through the Dardanelles, and take the Ottomans out of the war, resulted in over 130,000 deaths on both sides. It came to be seen as a folly of British war planning. The campaign’s enduring poignancy may be that it forged national identities for countries on both sides.

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk used his prominence as a commander at Gallipoli, known as Canakkale to the Turks, to vault into prominence, lead Turkey’s War of Independence — and ultimately found the Turkish Republic. Similarly, the tragic fate of troops from Australia and New Zealand, who played a key role in the campaign, is said to have inspired an identity distinct from Britain. The anniversary of the start of the land campaign on April 25, known as ANZAC Day, after the Australia and New Zealand Army Corps, is marked as a coming of age for both nations. Carnell’s great-grandfather, Francis George Carnell, was so eager he had to lie about his age. That was a common ploy for teenagers of the day. But Francis was 55 — and too old to enlist. He had already fought in wars in South Africa for the British. After being promoted to lance corporal in training, he landed at what is now known as Anzac cove among the early waves of soldiers. On April 25, 1915, they were rowed in at dawn to narrow beaches with scant cover only to encounter rugged hills and scorching fire by well concealed Turkish defenders.

John Carnell knows little about what happened next, except that somehow his ancestor, despite his age, made it up the beach to fight in one of the iconic battles of the campaign. The fight for the Turkish position of “Lone Pine” — launched by Australian battalions — cost heavy losses on both sides. On Saturday, Australians will commemorate that battle following a dawn service at Anzac Cove, near a memorial with the names of dead soldiers, including. F.G. Carnell. On Aug. 7, Francis George Carnell was wounded and evacuated to a hospital ship. He died on Aug. 10, according to John Carnell, and was buried at sea. He left behind a wife and one son, who had thirteen children. That same summer, Mehmet Emin Ersoz — Kenan’s father — was also gravely injured. The father talked little of the war, and Kenan thinks it was because he wanted to spare the children his suffering. But there was no hiding it. “We could see the ugly side of war on my father’s body,” he said. “His feet were full of wounds. There were callused pieces between his flesh and bones.” (ap)

While some police around the United States have balked at the use of body cameras, saying they would subject them to an unreasonable level of monitoring, interest in supplying them to officers is growing. Studies of camera use by police in Rialto, California, and Mesa, Arizona, showed steep declines in citizen complaints and in use of force by officers. In the Ohio village of New Richmond, where Kidder’s restraint last week in the face of a potentially deadly suspect has drawn wide acclaim, police chief Randy Harvey said the video shows why he’d like to have the wearable cameras for all his officers. India suspends Al-Jazeera broadcasts for 5 days over maps NEW DELHI — The TV network Al-Jazeera was off the air in India on Thursday following a 5-day suspension ordered by the government over maps of the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir. India is deeply sensitive about how Kashmir, which is divided between India and Pakistan but claimed by both, is portrayed on maps. A government report said that in the Al-Jazeera maps a portion of Kashmir had “not been shown as a part of Indian territory.” The suspension began Wednesday and is to last until next Monday. On Thursday, a message displayed on the Al-Jazeera channel said that

“as instructed by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting this channel will not be available.” The Qatar-based network condemned the suspension and asked for talks with the Indian government. According to Al-Jazeera, the maps were produced by outside software and were revised shortly after Indian authorities complained. “This ban is a disproportionate response to an issue that we fixed promptly after it was pointed out,” Al Anstey, managing director of AlJazeera English, said in a statement. “It needlessly deprives Indian viewers of our global news.” (ap)

INDONESIA Police probing death of witness in slavery cases

JAKARTA - Indonesian police are investigating the death of a local official in the Ministry of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs to see if it is linked to a slavery probe in the remote, eastern island village of Benjina, a government official said Wednesday. Yoseph Sairlela’s body was found Saturday at a hotel in a leafy neighborhood of the capital, said Asep Burhanudin, director general of sea and fishery resources. Although there was a wound on the side of the victim’s face and a bruise on his forehead, an initial examination determined that they were not the cause of death and Sairlela died of a heart attack, Asep said. He said the results of an autopsy are still pending and the police investigation is continuing. Minister Susi Pudjiastuti, meanwhile, has launched an internal investigation into the case, he said, noting that Sairlela was supposed to be a key witness in a case surrounding the use of forced labor by Thai-run fishing trawlers in Indonesia’s Maluku islands. Court rejects death row Ghanaian’s appeal JAKARTA - Indonesia’s Supreme Court has rejected an appeal by a Ghanaian on death row, an official said Wednesday, one of several foreign drug convicts expected to face the firing squad soon. Martin Anderson’s request for a judicial review was rejected on Tuesday, the same day the court dismissed an appeal by Serge Atlaoui, a Frenchman on death row, said a spokesman for the attorney-general’s office. Death row convicts can pursue appeals in other courts -- and several in the group facing execution are doing so -- but they are seen as having little chance of success, and authorities say such efforts simply amount to condemned prisoners seeking to buy time. “I give two thumbs up to the S u p r e m e C o u r t ’s d e c i s i o n , ” said spokesman Tony Spontana, referring to the rejection of Atlaoui’s and Anderson’s appeals. Spontana said he hoped they would not try any other “manoeuvres” to avoid their impending execution. There is now only one convict, an Indonesian, in the group of drug offenders who still has

In the agreement, President Joko Widodo lauded the Singaporean Government for the protection granted to Indonesian migrant workers and its citizens in Singapore. On the occasion, President Joko Widodo also invited investors to avail investment opportunities in the field of infrastructure. Singapore has become one of the largest contributors of foreign direct investment into Indonesia during the last five years. In addition, the two leaders agreed to provide a wider market for agricultural products in Indonesia. So far, Singapore is the third-largest trading partner of Indonesia, after China and Japan. Some sectors of cooperation need to be improved and prioritized between the two countries, one of which is the development of logistics. BUSINESS Global growth outlook steady despite oil fall, stimulus burst

LONDON/BENGALURU - A collapse in oil prices that gave a windfall to the world’s energy consumers and a flurry of policy easing from central banks might have been expected to brighten the outlook for global economic growth. But Reuters polls of more than 250 economists across Europe and North America show only modest upgrades to growth forecasts and a reluctance to relinquish a depressed inflation view, despite the rush of rate cuts and central bank cash that most respondents believe is far from over. The biggest policy change, sovereign bond buying by the European Central Bank that started in March, has lit a fire under European stock markets and government bonds but has boosted the economic growth outlook only a little. Germany’s DAX index has rallied more than 20 percent since the start of the year alongside a plummeting euro that has given way to an ascendant dollar. Most of Germany’s sovereign bonds are so expensive they are now paying a negative yield. And yet the expected quarterly growth rate for the euro zone has only

moved up to a modest 0.4 percent pace across the forecast horizon certainly better than prospects for no growth but not enough to make sizeable reductions in high unemployment. The outlook for inflation, which the ECB wants to get back from near zero to its target of just below 2 percent, is more benign for 2015 than it was at the start of the year before QE even began. And the spectre of Greece leaving the euro zone is hovering. “The world economy is looking increasingly surreal, so much so that

policymakers are really struggling to deliver the economic outcomes they’d ideally like to see,” noted Stephen King, chief global economist at HSBC. The consensus for global growth this year has fallen to 3.4 percent from 3.7 percent polled back in July, around the start of the collapse in oil prices that was meant to give a boost to consumer spending even while hurting major oil exporters. The outlook for 2016 has only risen by 0.2 percentage points over the same roughly nine-month period to 3.7 percent.

In the meantime, the dollar has soared over 20 percent against a basket of currencies. Economists singled it out as the biggest threat to growth this year in the United States, which has been leading the global expansion. The Federal Reserve appears strongly inclined to raise rates from the zero bound this year, but the latest poll shows that the expected start date keeps slipping as does how high rates are likely to climb over the coming year. That is based on a series of disappointing data since the start of the year, a pattern that has repeated itself several times in the long recovery back from the financial crisis and has left many analysts and investors sceptical. “While the commitment to keep the monetary sluice gates open is

alive and well in many parts of both the developed and the emerging world, the Federal Reserve is, in effect, the elephant in the room,” wrote King. The latest Reuters poll forecast the price index for consumer spending tracked by the Federal Open Market Committee will be benign this year before rising towards the central bank’s 2 percent target next year. The same goes for Britain, where the consensus for a first interest rate hike from a record low near zero has slipped to the first quarter of next year -- and even then it’s a close call. Much will depend on how much China, the world’s second largest economy, is set to slow this year. German government raises 2015 growth forecast to 1.8 percent

BERLIN — The German government says it expects the country’s economy to grow by 1.8 percent this year, an improvement on its January forecast of 1.5 percent.

Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel says growth in 2016 is predicted to also reach 1.8 percent, up from the 1.6 percent previously predicted.

The figures are lower than those released by independent forecasters last week. Gabriel told reporters in Berlin on Wednesday that the government wants to “stay on the safe

NEW YORK — Coca-Cola reported a quarterly profit Wednesday that beat Wall Street expectations as the world’s largest beverage maker raised prices to offset slower growth. The maker of Sprite, Dasani, Powerade and other drinks said its global volume rose 1 percent, reflecting gains in both soda and non-carbonated drinks. In its flagship North America market, overall volume was flat. The company sold 1 percent less soda, reflecting the ongoing move away from traditional carbonated drinks. One recent drag on soda has been the fading popularity of Diet Coke. The drink declined 5 percent in the region, while Coke Zero, a newer diet soda, declined 1 percent, said Kathy Waller, Coke’s chief financial officer. “We’re doing a lot of work in North America to understand what’s going on,” Waller said of the decline of diet sodas. The overall soda decline in North America was offset by a 2 percent increase in noncarbonated drinks, such as bottled teas. Higher pricing helped drive up revenue.

Coca-Cola Co. says it is focusing less on volume growth and instead focusing on driving up revenue by mixing up the type of packages it sells. For instance, the Atlanta-based company has been pushing its mini-cans and glass bottles more aggressively, which are positioned as premium offerings and tend to fetch higher prices per ounce. Waller said the company is continuing to roll out the mini-cans more broadly in the U.S. The company has also said it would work on slashing costs to improve its financial performance amid slowing growth. CEO Muhtar Kent has called 2015 a “transition year” for the company. For the three months ended April 3, Coke said it earned $1.56 billion, or 35 cents per share. Not including one-time items, it earned 48 cents per share. That was more than the 43 cents per share analysts expected, according to Zacks Investment Research. Total revenue was $10.71 billion, which also came in above the $10.66 billion analysts expected. Shares of Coke rose 3 percent to $42.10. (ap)

Meanwhile, the demand for life need is getting higher in line with the soaring prices of basic necessities. “In the past, the salt farmer amounted to hundreds of people, but now only seven people still survive. They can hold out as it becomes a side job,” said Pula while taking his livestock in the area of traditional salt production. Not far from the hut, hectares of land seem to have been overgrown by bushes. Currently, their traditional device used to make salt only remain seven pieces. Its condition is already obsolete having been not in use for long time due to unfavorable weather condition for farmers to produce salt. “Now, it is still sasih kadasa (April). The auspicious time for them (seven salt farmers) to produce is sasih ketiga (September),” said Pula. Currently, many salt farmers switch profession into construction worker because the result is good to cover the family needs. “As a salt farmer, we are just able to earn money after four days.

Within four days, farmers can produce 40 kg of salt,” said Pula. The current price of salt is only IDR 3,000 per kg. The income from salt farming is considered inadequate to meet daily needs. The current result of salt farmers at Amed and Lebah hamlet has increased due to the assistance of a particular institution. And with the help, the local salt production had been exported to some countries such as France, Japan and Malaysia. Today, after many salt farmers have switched professions, most of the lands have been converted into buildings such as restaurants, cafés and tourist accommodation. Headman of Purwakerti, I Wayan Sentuni Artana, when contacted on Thursday admitted that formerly there were hundreds of salt farmers at Amed village coalesced into 80 groups. However, due to the lack of empowerment, one by one they eventually left the profession. Recognizing that salt farming poses one of the potentials owned by the village, his party claimed to make re-empowerment with certain institutions. “Salt production of farmers should be able to get a label or patent, so that the results can be recognized and have a higher selling price,” he said. Drizzles, building roof of SDN 2 Subagan collapses

Amlapura — Building roof of the SDN 2 Subagan elementary school suddenly collapsed amid the cloudy and drizzly condition, Wednesday afternoon (Apr. 22). The incident shocked the residents of Subagan village, Karangasem. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m., where it was first known by the local hamlet chief, Gede Suparda. Incidentally, the house of local hamlet chief is only separated by a border wall of the school. “I was surprised to hear the sound like a collapsing building from home. Having been checked out, in fact the school building collapsed,” he said when met at the school area. Building on the north, of the three main buildings in the school area, immediately drew the attention of hundreds of people at surrounding area. Residents had a closer look at the building condition at firsthand and then attempted to help evacuate valuable objects from inside the building. The school building facing south and extending from east to west consists of three rooms. The easternmost is used for teacher’s room, the middle for principal’s office and the westernmost room is used for the infirmary. Of the three rooms, the principal’s office suffered the most serious damage, where the point of damaged roof occurred

right above the room. The roof collapsed as triggered by the condition of old hood where the trestle is already fragile due to the age. “This building was last renovated in 1984,” explained Suparda amid the crowd of Subagan people. Principal of the SDN 2 Subagan elementary school, A.A. Gede Rai, was shocked to see one of the buildings collapsed. Compared to 2014, the result showed a decrease of 6 percent from 82 cases to 77 cases of traffic offenders. There were 34 offenders who were aged 60 or older. “The fact that so many offending motorists are 60 or older, means that they need to be reminded to be aware of their actions” said the Chief of Bali Police, Ronny F. Sompie, on Wednesday (Apr. 22). The Directorate of Traffic Affairs for the Bali Police revealed that their were 23 casualties due to traffic offences, 18 serious injuries, and 93 minor injuries. Of the nine county police stations under the Bali Police, Denpasar Police were ranked first, followed by Gianyar and Buleleng. “For the 21 days before the operation, there were 73 cases of traffic accidents and 77 cases during the operation. Casualties decrease from 35 people, 23 people during the operation” he added. The majority of traffic accident occured in residential areas. Therefore, the Bali Police Chief hopes to build security awareness in these areas by providingg guidance to people, encouraging them to slow down, seeing as the police can be everywhere 24 hours a day. “Violations of traffic rules contribute in large part to incidents of accidents. BEIRUT — Several hard-line Syrian rebel groups pushed a new offensive against government forces in northwestern Syria on Thursday, less than a month after seizing control of the provincial capital there. FOR the first time a performance of gong kebyar was staged with the concept of nyatur desa. In other words, the gong kebyar played by children were placed in the four cardinal directions. This alternate placement of the performers that includesfour gong kebyar gamelan troupes is called nyatur desa in reference to the four cardinal directions. With four different stages, alternately performing, spectators have to rotate their position to see each performance. The nyatur desa gong kebyar performance was part of the the 244th anniversary celebrations of the town of Gianyar, which took place on Tuesday night (Apr. 21) in the Astina Raya Square. Stage one located in the west of the field (open stage) featured the Widya Kumara Kids Gong Kebyar troupe from Peninjoan village, Batuan, Sukawati, who were sent as Gianyar’s envoy to the in the 37th Bali Arts Festival (BAF) 2015, presented a gamelan composition entitled Tabuh Pat Lelambatan Cakra Wahyu and games. Stage two located in the north presented the Kembang Dharma Putra Gong Kebyar Troupe from Tulikup, Gianyar. Stage three located in the east, performed the Sapta Widya Budaya Art Studio from Guwang village, Sukawati, and stage four in the south presented the Kumara Panji Mas Kids Gong Kebyar Troupe from Belega village, Blahbatuh, Gianyar. The nyatur desa concept is a brand-new staging of gong kebyar. Until now, people only knew about the mebarung concept that involves two gamelan troupes. But now people can also enjoy the gong

kebyar art from that involves four gamelan troupes. Interestingly, the audience, situated in the middle of all four troupes, just needs to reorient themselves toward the stage that is active. A gamelan player from Blahbatuh, Jero Mangku Arsana, very much appreciated the nyatur desa concept. The concept is an innovation in the development of gong kebyar in Gianyar. This concept provides more opportunities for children to perform. In addition, the audiences gets to enjoy a new spectacle both in terms of gamelan music and dance as well. The gong kebyar art is staged as a spectacle meant to entertain the community. To that end, it is performed in a harmonious spirit -there should be no intention to seek victory or to taunt each other. “The gong kebyar show is meant for the audience not for the troupes to show off to each other” said Jero Mangku Arsana. I Wayan Sira, a spectators from Bona, assessed that the performance could be improved by moving the stages closer to one and other so that there could be more communication between the the

gamelan players. According to Professor and art critic Dr. I Wayan Dibia, the nyatur desa concept is a creative innovation made by art lovers in Gianyar and inspired by the Catus Pata or ‘central intersection’ which, in Bali is a symbol of the sacred cycle of time that turns around the four directions of the north, east, south and west. This new concept also indicates that the art of gong

kebyar, over 100 years that it has been around, has been able to provide a contribution to the community of the Island of the Gods. “Gianyar plays an important role in the development of gong kebyar in Bali. This new concept poses an innovative staging of pairing patterns of gong kebyar and provides la way for young people to learn about different styles of gamelan music compositio,” said Wayan Dibia.

Similarly, this concept is able to foster a vibrant competitive spirit in the performing arts of dance and gamelan music as well as able to rekindle the passion of the arts. On Kartini Day

BSMP celebrate the contributions made by women

GIANYAR - The 136th anniversary of the birth of the Indonesian heroine Raden Ajeng Kartini and her fight for human rights in colonial Indonesia is celebrated every April 21st. A Javanese woman of noble birth, Kartini championed women’s education and maintained an active correspondence with Dutch colonial officials, now preserved in print, defending the emancipation of women, and rallying against the stifling constraints imposed by both the colonial and traditional Javanese society on Indonesian woman of the day. Suffering a premature death in childbirth at the age of 25 in 1904, her letters published posthumously and her success in setting up a progressive school for Javanese girls just one year prior to her death have formed a lasting legacy in Indonesian history. Her teachings served as a precursor for the Indonesian independence and earned her a lasting notoriety in Indonesian history with her words and life story familiar to every Indonesian student more than a century after her death. In order to honor the role played by woman in modernday Indonesia and in the successful operation of the awardwinning animal park, the management and staff of the Bali Safari & Marine Park (BSMP) recently organized blood donor programs and free Pap smear examinations. Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Sequels multiply in summer movie season

NEW YORK — “I’ll be back,” the line Arnold Schwarzenegger first uttered more than 30 years ago in that indelible manly monotone, belongs to the Terminator, of course. But it also might as well be the official slogan of the summer movie season. It’s the time of year when Hollywood’s older, reliable brands, with the tenacity of Schwarzenegger’s lethal cyborg, claw their way back onto the big screen in a popcorn parade of big-budget sequels, reboots and re-dos. That’s nothing new, but the extent of the sequel spinning is.

Cruise wows CinemaCon with look at ‘Mission’ stunts

LAS VEGAS — Tom Cruise revealed Tuesday at a surprise appearance at CinemaCon in Las Vegas that he actually hung off the side of an airplane in the film “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation.” The actor said he performed the stunt, which involved a massive Airbus A400M taking off and flying to 5,000 feet (1,500meters), eight times with a harness attaching him to the aircraft. Cruise said he was terrified throughout, having to worry about particles from the runway, jet fuel fumes and even birds. “I want to keep audiences on the edge of their seats,” he said. Pictures’ presentation to the nation’s theater owners previewing its upcoming movies. The first shows Cruise escaping from captivity with skillful martial arts moves alongside Rebecca Ferguson. The second is a comedic car chase with co-star Simon Pegg in the passenger’s seat. Ferguson and Pegg joined Cruise on stage but neither wore a microphone, making it even more clear that Cruise was the main event. The film is set to pen on July 31. CinemaCon is a preview of some of the year’s most anticipated fare and an assurance to the people who own the theaters that the big films will be making money for them. (ap)

The sequel expansion — as headlong as Tom Cruise in the “Mission: Impossible” movies — runs in all directions, stretching into prequels, second-try reboots, spinoffs and franchises that are less linear, roman-numeral progressions than (as in the brimming Marvel world) whole universes of overlapping characters: fantasy realms to visit, not just stories to follow. To fuel the proliferation, Hollywood is dipping ever deeper into its vaults: 10 of this summer’s most anticipated blockbusters have origins dating back more than three decades, including “Fantastic Four,” ‘’The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,” ‘’Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Terminator: Genisys,” the fifth film in the series created by James Cameron in 1984. Schwarzenegger is back to say that he’s back. Nostalgia and familiarity mingle with updated special effects and new cast members in these films to render something that hopefully feels fresh to moviegoers. As the “Fast and Furious” series (more profitable in its seventh installment than ever before) has proven this spring, the lifespan of the sequels no longer adheres to the old rules of inevitable decay — at least for now. The ever-lengthening life of franchises can make for

some strange off-screen realities, and not just for 67-year-old Terminators. “Mad Max: Fury Road” (May 15), is returning decades later with its original creator, the Australian director George Miller. “One of the most jolting experiences of my life was to go to SXSW and watch ‘Road Warrior: Mad Max 2’ in a newly minted print for the first time in 32 years and then showing scenes from ‘Fury Road’ all these years later,” says Miller. “It was a kind of a time travel. It was a strange but powerful experience.” There is blunt mathematics behind the proliferating franchises. The top six summer films at the box office in 2013 were sequels. Last summer, all of the top 10 movies were sequels, reboots or hailed from well-known properties. This summer, the box-office seems nearly certain to be led by “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (May 1), the sequel to the 2012 superhero team-up original, the highest grossing-summer movie ever. With $1 billion-plus in box office assured, the financial imperative is, of course, enormous. “Age of Ultron” writer-director Joss Whedon says “making more money would be swell,” but a creative purpose is still necessary.

“Magic Mike,” made for just $7 million, opened in June 2012 with a remarkable $39.1 million and went on to gross $167 million worldwide. A male stripper romp that winks to the real past of producer-star Channing Tatum, it returns July 1 with “Magic Mike XXL.” It’s the classic kind of sequel — a road trip — albeit one with an especially untraditional destination: a Florida stripper convention Tatum attended before his acting career took off. The premise still makes director Gregory Jacobs chuckle. “Magic Mike XXL” is joined by a handful of sequels that come from fairly recent films: the teen musical “Pitch Perfect 2” on May 15; the “Despicable Me” spinoff “Minions” on July 10; Seth MacFarlane’s comedy “Ted 2” on June 26. But the bulk of the summer season will depend on older franchises, some of which are counting on moviegoer amnesia. (ap)

EU leaders discuss more and faster action on Med migrants

BRUSSELS — European Union leaders could double their spending on saving lives in the Mediterranean and use military resources to capture and destroy vessels that they suspect will be used for trafficking, according to a draft agreement prepared for an emergency summit Thursday called after hundreds of migrants drowned in the space of a few days. The latest draft statement, obtained by The Associated Press, would pledge the 28 nations to “increase search and rescue possibilities” and to “undertake systematic efforts to identify, capture and destroy vessels before they are used by traffickers.” It said EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini would immediately start preparing an operation that would likely have a military component. “We will take action now. Europe is declaring war on smugglers,” said the EU’s top migration official, Dimitris Avramopoulos, who was in Malta to attend the funeral of 24 migrants who perished at sea. Italian Premier Matteo Renzi agreed. “European Union naval operations in the Horn of Africa have successfully fought piracy — and a similar initiative must be developed to effectively fight against human

trafficking in the Mediterranean,” Renzi wrote in a New York Times opinion piece. “Trafficking vessels should be put out of operation.” A civil-military mission to do the job would face many legal hurdles and already proved controversial ahead of the summit. The draft statement also said the nations want to “set up a first voluntary pilot project on resettlement, offering at least 5,000 places to persons qualifying for protection.” That resettlement plan would amount to about half of the number which arrived in just the last week and a tiny fraction of the tens of thousands likely to arrive this year. The draft statement also proposes cutting the time needed to process would-be migrants, which can now take up to a year before a person is processed and deemed

legitimate to stay. Under the plans that would be cut to as little as two months. The leaders are under great pressure to react after more than 10,000 migrants were plucked from seas between Italy and Libya in a week. EU President Donald Tusk urged the summit “to agree on very practical measures,” including “strengthening search-and-rescue possibilities, by fighting the smugglers and by discouraging their victims from putting their lives at risk, while reinforcing solidarity.” The leaders are also to assess a concern raised by U.N. secretarygeneral Ban Ki-moon, who called for a stronger EU search-and-rescue operation and more legal migration channels. “We all have a moral imperative to act swiftly,” Ban says in a letter to Tusk obtained by The Associated Press. EU officials say the leaders will commit to doubling the size of the European border agency effort in the Mediterranean, but those operations are designed for monitoring migrant movements, not necessarily saving lives. and Doctors Without Borders want a multinational rescue effort launched to help the thousands fleeing conflict and poverty from places like Syria, Eritrea and Somalia. “The stakes are very high. The number of hours, literally, that it takes to take action will make the difference between life and death,” Iverna McGowan, acting director of Amnesty’s European Institutions Office told The Associated Press. Some lawmakers are concerned that the leaders may stump up rescue assets while the media spotlight is on their summit, but that commitments to solidarity could quickly fade away, as they have in the past. “I fear that what will happen ... is that they will try to water down a few of the points and the actual reason why they are meeting — to urgently seek solutions to what is happening today — will not be the focus of the deal,” Roberta Metsola, the leading EU parliament lawmaker on migration, told the AP. According to the UN’s refugee agency, 219,000 refugees and migrants crossed the Mediterra-

nean last year, and at least 3,500 died trying. More than 1,000 are believed to have died already this month alone. Critics blame the increased deaths on the phasing-out of Italy’s big rescue operation in 2013-14, Mare Nostrum, which worked close to the coast of Libya — the biggest migrant transit route. A smaller EU mission dubbed Triton was left to fill the vacuum. It has no mandate for rescue work, although it does respond to distress calls under international obligations and has saved thousands of lives since its launch late last year.
