Indian film awards arrive in Tampa, but why? Associated Press Writer
TAMPA, Florida — The so-called Bollywood Oscars have been held in Macau, Singapore, London and now ... Tampa? Starting on Wednesday, hundreds of Indian film stars and thousands of Bollywood fans are expected to flood this city for the International Indian Film Academy’s awards extravaganza, four days of song-and-dance performances and movie screenings. The event caps off with the awards ceremony Saturday.

Even though Tampa has hosted four Super Bowls and the 2012 Republican National Convention, its small Indian population makes it an unusual choice for the awards. The event has been held in big cities across the globe as the success of Bollywood has grown, but it’s the first time in its 15-year history that the group has gathered in the United States. About 800 million people will watch the ceremony on television or the Internet, according to organizers. Shades of Bollywood are everywhere in the area. The top floor of the Tampa International Airport parking garage was transformed into a reception area for Bollywood bigwigs and autograph-seeking fans. Shahid Kapoor, an actor with 4 million followers on Twitter, arrived to a small crowd at the VIP area Monday. He is scheduled to co-host the awards ceremony. Elsewhere, security was trained on how best to handle enthusiastic fans and service workers were taught how to accommodate Indian visitors (tip: “just because you don’t recognize them, doesn’t mean they aren’t famous”). Tampa was chosen because city and tourism leaders were aggressive. Sabbas Joseph, the director of the academy and entertainment company Wizcraft International, said Tampa officials even took a few jabs at the competition, telling him: “Orlando mice, Miami Vice and Tampa nice.” Tourism leaders are thrilled and hope to draw more wealthy Indian tourists to the area. Some 30,000 people are
expected. Hollywood superstar Kevin Spacey will teach a master acting class and John Travolta will be honored at the awards show as the “Most Popular All Time International Star In India.” Santiago Corrada, the president and CEO of Visit Tampa Bay, the area’s tourism arm, said a private donor gave about $9 million to help bring the awards to the area. The county and state provided about $1.1 million to promote the event and market Florida. The city has shown there’s an appetite for Indian glitter and glam, despite having a small Indian-American population. Cheap seats at Raymond James Stadium, usually where the Tampa Bay Buccaneers football team plays, start at $93. Pricier options run all the way up to $3,295. Nearly all of 25,000 available tickets have been sold.

DENPASAR - Activists of the Balinese People Forum Rejecting Reclamation (ForBali) flew kites rejecting reclamation in conjunction with the celebration of the Earth Day on Mertasari Beach, Sanur, Tuesday (Apr 22). Not only ForBali, such an action was also followed by musicians as well as elements of the community who expressed their rejection against the reclamation plan. Spokesperson of ForBali, Komang Sastrawan, said the kites flying in the sky of Mertasari had become a symbol of complaint to the sky. Primarily it related to the insistence of the government and investors who wanted to rape the mother earth in many ways. “Reclamation plan clearly rules out the adverse effects on the environment and the future of the earth of Bali Island. We have seen a lot of bad effects due to reclamation in various areas, so that through this kite we want to complain to the sky about the plan of the government and the investors to rape the earth,” explained Sastrawan. This Advocacy and Campaign Division Head of the Friends of the Earth (Walhi) of Bali added the government had also made massive efforts to change the regulations inhibiting the reclamation plan at Benoa Bay. Central government, Bali government and Badung government were said to conspire in order to revise the Presidential Regulation No. 45/2011 on Spatial Planning of Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar and Tabanan (Presidential Regulation on Sarbagita) where the control of amendment acceleration was taken over by central government through the MP3EI scheme. “The government considers the conservation status of Benoa Bay in article 55 paragraph 5 inhibits the reclamation plan by PT TWBI, so the Presidential Regulation, according to the government, should be revised. If the government wants to revise the Presidential Regulation just to accommodate the reclamation plan by PT TWBI, then the government should also know that the Presidential Regulation on Sarbagita can only be reviewed in 5 years,” he said.

MANGUPURA - Equity of Badung government in the Municipal Waterworks (PDAM Tirta Mangutama) until 2017 worth IDR 235,741,840,337 is expected not only to be directed to improvement of services in the area of South Badung. The circles of Badung House reminded the government not to ignore the needs of people in the North Badung. “Indeed, the priority is given to the South Badung due to its tourism sector. But logically, the North Badung must not be ignored,” said the member of PDI-P Faction in the Badung House, Wayan Regep, Tuesday (Apr 22). He said the clean water crisis services did not only take place in the South Badung. In the North Badung, particularly in Petang subdistrict, many people remained untouchable by the service of Municipality Waterworks. This problem had been going on for years. Clean water services, he said, posed a basic requirement for everyone. On that account, the government also needed to take strategic measure to perform equalization in the provision of infrastructure across the Badung County. Regep denoting the Chairman of Commission A of the Badung House asserted that equalization of water service should absolutely be done. Moreover, the population growth ran rapidly in the
North Badung area. His party admitted to worry if the services were only focused on South Badung and it would result in an impression that the government only paid attention to the needs of tourism industry. “There should be equity in order that inequality will not be getting wider. Water services are expected to be proportional by equally accommodating the needs of people in the North Badung,” he said. When confirmed separately, Managing Director of the Badung Municipality Waterworks, Made Subarga Yasa, explained the equity was used for the construction of water service infrastructure, not only for the South Badung but also for the North Badung. According to him, the infrastructure development was carried out by Badung government through the Human Settlement Agency. The Municipality Waterworks could only operate when the infrastructure had been built.
As reported previously, in the plenary session of the Badung House where one of the agendas was the explanation on the regional bylaw draft on the equity of regional government in the Municipality Waterworks, the Regent Gde Agung explained that capital investment was to build new transmission and distribution system, through construction of reservoirs, installation of main pipe networks and pipeline distribution network. Construction of the transmission and distribution system was expected to improve the quality of service and increase the coverage of services in North Badung and South Badung. Equity participation in the Municipality Waterworks totally amounted to IDR 235,741,840,337. In details, the capital investment budgeted for 4 years in the regional budget 2014 to 2017 amounted to IDR 137.02 billion plus previous equity worth IDR 98,721,840,337. (kmb25)
MANGUPURA - As being desperate to torture her stepson, a woman from Sumbawa, Nurhalimah aka Upa, 21, was arrested by Badung Police Criminal Investigation, Tuesday (Apr 22). Ironically, Ahmad Rifai aka Fai, 4, remaining a toddler had to die after receiving treatment at Sanglah Hospital, Saturday early morning (Apr 19). Then, the suspect was examined in the Badung Police. When met during the examination in the Women and Children Protection (PPA) unit, Upa officially admitted to be a stepmother after marrying the victim’s father, Ismail Marsuki at the end of 2009 in Sumbawa. Despite knowing Marsuki was a widower, Upa was determined to resume her intention to establish a marital bond. “When coming to Bali at the end of 2010, I was preparing to take care of Fai who was still a baby,” she said while looking down and shutting her face with hands. As the age grew, Upa complained about the nature of Fai that was often fussy. Due to being annoyed, she admitted to frequently scold at the victim as well as to hit the thigh and buttock of the victim with her bare hands. At the end of 2013, Upa starting to be pregnant was more sensitive to the nature of Fai. Even, this five-month pregnant woman was increasingly sadistic and hit Fai with various objects around her like a broom stick and slippers. “Fai was often fussy, hard to be asked to eat and take a bath. Therefore, I hit him at the thigh and buttock. Because of being so upset, I also hit his head and body with a broom stick for several times,” said the thin-boned woman. Furthermore, added Upa, a few days before being taken to hospital, Upa and the victim got traffic accident when riding a motorcycle at Pemenang hamlet, Kukuh village, Marga, Tabanan. Due to such accident, the victim got injuries to his temple and feet, but he was not taken to the doctor. “After the accident, in fact the wound in his temple swelled. Besides, he could complain about headache and stomach ache on Friday morning. However, I ignored him because I think it was not severe,” she said. On the following day, Saturday (Apr 12), Fai was taken to Badung Hospital and then referred on Wednesday (Apr 16). Meanwhile, Upa who was panic even ignored him and intended to go home to Sumbawa. However, the intention was cancelled because she had no money. Ultimately, she only kept silence for four days at Padang Bai Harbor. “I only had money worth IDR 150,000. Since it was not enough, I was just sitting in the harbor from Monday to Thursday. Even, I should sell my earrings for IDR 150,000 for daily consumption,” she said. On Friday, she was back to her boarding house at Batu Lumbung hamlet, Gulingan village, Mengwi, Badung. However, on Saturday (Apr 19), she got information on the death of Rifai. It made Upa fear and she decided to hide in the house of friend at Sanggulan Kediri, Tabanan. “On Monday morning, my husband (Marsuki) called and he told that I was chased by police. Then, I was called again in the afternoon to surrender. Finally, I surrendered at Kediri Police,” she said while adding the officers of Kediri Police making coordination with the Badung Police took the suspect to headquarters of Badung Police. Meanwhile, the Chief of Badung Police Criminal Investigation, Wisnu Wardana, when met in his office on Tuesday (Apr 22) confirmed that the offender was still undergoing the investigation, while the evidence of the torture such as sandals and a broom stick had been secured in Badung Police. In addition, his party was still awaiting the medical report from the hospital. “We are still investigating the offender. Besides, we have not received the medical report and hopefully this case can be accomplished as soon as possible,” he said with permission from the Chief of Badung Police Komang Suartana. (nik)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Saudi Arabia reports 11 new cases of MERS virus, first in Mecca Reuters
ABU DHABI - Saudi Arabia said on Wednesday it had discovered 11 more cases of the potentially deadly Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), including what appeared to be the first case in the Muslim holy city of Mecca. A health ministry statement said eight of the people were in intensive care, two were stable, including a 24-year-old Saudi man from the “holy capital” Mecca, and one showed no symptoms. Three of those affected worked in health care, it said. Saudi Arabia has witnessed a jump in the rate of infection with the virus in recent weeks, with many of the new cases recorded in Jeddah, the kingdom’s second largest city. Of Wednesday’s 11 new cases, four were recorded in the Saudi capital Riyadh, six in Jeddah - the second largest city and the main entry point for pilgrims visiting nearby Mecca - and one in Mecca itself, the statement said. The jump in Saudi cases is of particular concern as the country is expected to see a large influx of pilgrims from around the world in July during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, followed in early October by the arrival of millions of people to perform the
annual Haj in Mecca and Medina. The latest cases bring the total number of confirmed cases in the kingdom to 272, of whom 81 have died. MERS emerged in the Middle East in 2012 and is from the same family as the SARS virus, which killed around 800 people worldwide after first appearing in China in 2002. MERS can cause coughing, fever and pneumonia. Although the worldwide number of MERS infections is fairly small, the more than 40 percent death rate among confirmed cases and the spread of the virus beyond the Middle East is keeping scientists and public health officials on alert. replaced the health minister on Monday amid growing public disquiet at the spread of the disease. A day before his dismissal, Abdullah al-Rabeeah said there were no cases of the virus in Mecca. Labour Minister Adel Fakieh, who has been appointed as acting health minister, said on Wednesday he had just returned from a visit to the King Fahd hospital in Jeddah where a number of coronavirus patients are being treated. Fakieh said he was pleased that a number of patients, including doctors, were recovering but said that there were a few critical cases still receiving medical care.
NEW YORK - Strength training, traditionally favored by body builders seeking to bulk up, has become the go-to regimen for athletes, weekend warriors and exercise enthusiasts determined to slim down. Fitness experts say metabolic strength training, a high-intensity, full-body interval workout, can add definition to the shape of runners, cyclists and other cardio devotees willing to put some muscle into it. Florida-based trainer Nick Tumminello believes strength training should be the primary form of exercise for everyone except beginners. “If you’re looking to lose fat, go with strength training,” said Tumminello, author of “Strength Training for Fat Loss.” “Watch your diet to reveal your shape, and strength train to improve that shape.” It is not your grandfather’s body-building program. While traditional strength training uses free weights or weight machine to build endurance and muscles, metabolic strength training combines high-intensity interval circuits with changing combinations and repetitions using free weights, kettlebells, barbells, dumbbells and resistance bands to increase the metabolic rate after and during the workout. “The body-building model is great for maximizing body building, but for the average individual looking for fat loss, or to feel better, or to improve general fitness, this creates more of a metabolic disturbance,” he said. DENPASAR - The number of foreign tourists visiting Bali rose 14.87 percent to 835,099 in the first quarter of this year from 727,013 in the same period last year. “The fairly significant growth was attributable to success in a number of international conferences in Bali in 2013,” tourism observer Dewa Nyoman Putra said on Wednesday. Dewa Nyoman said 95 percent of people spending holidays in Bali repeated visits to the country’s main tourist destination. He said despite the global crisis, the number of visitors to Bali from Europe and the United States, which are the worst hit by the crisis, rose in the first quarter of this year. An increase was also recorded in the number of visitors from other ASEAN countries, he said. Based on the official record of the Bali tourism office, the number of visitors from other ASEAN countries rose from 32,521 in January, to 34,840 in February and to 36,417 in March, 2014. The number of Europeans visiting Bali reached 155,674 in the January-March period of 2014 or 18.64 percent of the total number of visitors to the island and those form the United States totaled 41.690 visitors. Bali is still one of the favorite destinations for international holiday makers, Dewa Nyoman Putra said.

DENPASAR - Air pollution in urban areas is increasingly alarming. It is triggered by the high air pollution caused by various factors. One of the causes of high air pollution in urban areas is the vehicle exhaust. On that account, Denpasar Municipality through the Environment Agency (BLH) continues its efforts to prevent the increasing air pollution through vehicle emission testing. Even, this year the Environment Agency targets at least 1,000 vehicles so their exhaust gas content can be seen. The Head of Denpasar Environment Agency, AA Bagus Sudharsana, when met on the sidelines of emission testing at Renon, Tuesday (Apr 22), said that at this time the emission test also involved the police element, Transportation Agency and companies selling motor vehicles. “The motor vehicle emission test is carried out with regard to the Earth Day and the environment,” said Sudharsana. He claimed the motor vehicle test had been carried out regularly every year. Implementation of the emission test at this time was conducted four days in succession. In 2013, the emission test targeted 2,000 motor vehicles where the results of emission test indicated that 86 percent of the vehicles passed the emission test, while the remaining vehicles did not qualify. NEGARA - Extermination to 31 race dogs worth millions of rupiahs by Quarantine Office at Gilimanuk at the beginning of last week reaped condemnation from animal lovers. Such an action was considered barbaric and should not be done, let alone be committed on the Island of Bali. Some groups of animal lovers revealed last weekend their disappointment with the action taken by the officers that accidentally killed dozens of animals known to be human best friend. Ironically, they heard there was an allegation of blackmail committed by individual of the Quarantine Officer staff related to the capture of contraband dogs. A source from Kuta, Ss, who was about receiving a dog, deplored the attitude of the quarantine officers said to blackmail because the dogs detained for a week in the Quarantine Office were actually not infected by rabies. “My friend (Quarantine) had come, but requested some amount of money on the grounds of document submission, but the value is very much so we rejected it,” he explained. This source also denied if the dogs had no owners because the names of recipient had been clearly written on the cage. According to him, the local officials at Gilimanuk gave an offer between IDR 9 million and IDR 45 million. Since the value was high enough, the owners refused. However, a day after the rejection, the dogs were instantly exterminated. Meanwhile, condemnation action against the extermination also appeared on social media. A video on the extermination uploaded in YouTube got a lot of sympathy from site visitors. The video with duration of 16 minutes
contained the footage of extermination to dozens of race dogs with injection by quarantine officers. Since the video was uploaded on April 17, it has been viewed for 4,800 times and got hundreds of comments that entirely blasphemed such an action. The sad side in the video was seen when a female officer photographed the dogs using a mobile phone camera before the dogs were euthanized. After all the 31 dogs died, they were dried in a row at the courtyard of the Quarantine Office. Section Head of Monitoring and Enforcement, the Denpasar Agricultural Quarantine Office, IB Eka Ludra, told reporters on Sunday (Apr 20) that the extermination had been based on procedures of the Quarantine passing through several stages. The Quarantine Office had also attempted to summon the owners or shippers of the dogs, but they did not come until the specified deadline. According to him, since there were no people claim to be responsible until the deadline, his party decided to exterminate the dogs. He added the extermination was done on Tuesday afternoon (Apr 15), but the day after the arrest or on Sunday (Apr 13) the officers at Gilimanuk had made denial where the animals were denied from entering Bali because there was a ban. According to him, the delivery was not equipped with necessary document. Regarding the allegation of blackmail, Ludra strongly denied. His party was ready to be confronted with the people claiming to be blackmailed. But if there was quarantine officer at Gilimanuk who blackmailed, Ludra asked the name for easy inspection. Dengue spreads, dozens of residents hospitalized

SEMARAPURA - Dengue (DB) spreads again in Klungkung County. Dozens of residents from various villages had to be treated in Klungkung Hospital and Bintang Hospital, Tuesday (Apr 22). Ironically, five of which were the family of Klungkung Regent, Nyoman Suwirta, living at his private residence at Siku hamlet, Kamasan village, Klungkung. Information compiled from Klungkung Hospital on Tuesday mentioned if the patients with dengue symptoms had significantly increased since last February. In February, there were 40 patients treated at local hospital consisting of 20 men and 20 women. Then, the number of patients with dengue symptoms increased to 48 patients in March, consisting of 28 male patients and 28 female patients. Administration Division Head of Klungkung Hospital, Siti Sunari, with permission from Director of the Klungkung Hospital, Tuesday (Apr 22), said that during this April, until the middle of the month, there were 37 patients. A patient was treated at VIP room, another in Room A, three other people at Room F and five patients in the Room E. Meanwhile, the remaining patients had gone home. One of the patients in Room E, Ni Komang Suarjani, 21, from Bajing hamlet, Tegak village, admitted she initially got fever and had outpatient for three days and the temperature had dropped. However, on the fourth day, temperature of her body was deteriorating, so she was rushed to Klungkung Hospital and hospitalized. She claimed that in her own home neighborhood, a total of three men were attacked by dengue. Meanwhile, outside of the home, there were about five people who had similar conditions. “After a lot of people were attacked by dengue, fogging at that location has been intensified,” she said. Meanwhile, another patient with dengue symptoms, Putu Hendri Suryawan, 27, from Gembalan hamlet, Selat village, claimed to have been treated in Klungkung Hospital since April 17. As far as my knowledge, fogging has not been done,” said his wife Ni Putu Dari. Two of them had been treated first at the Klungkung Hospital and known to have been recovered and returned home. Meanwhile, three others, Ari Wahyudi, remaining at grade 2 of high school was still treated at Bintang Hospital, while Sastra Dinata of grade 3 at high school and Rezi of first grade of high school were also still treated in Klungkung Hospital. Regent of Klungkung, Nyoman Suwirta, admitted to reporters on Monday (Apr 21) that his relatives were hit by dengue. All the three relatives had been hospitalized since Sunday (Apr 20). However, their condition was said to have improved and gradually recovered. It was said the Health Agency had fogged the neighborhood immediately at Siku, Kamasan village. Meanwhile, other areas having been affected by dengue were not yet known because the Head of Health Agency, Gusti Ngurah Agung Swastika, when asked for his confirmation on Tuesday was not willing to respond. Siti Sunari added that Klungkung Hospital had provided maximal services for patients. Thus, none of the patients were treated in hallways. “If patients cannot be handled, we are ready to coordinate with the hospital network, so that patient can be quickly handled,” she explained. DENPASAR - The officers of Sub-directorate II Directorate of Special Criminal Investigation, Bali Police, have uncovered the duplication case of thousands of DVDs on April 15, 2014. The three suspects including Putu Krismantara, 27, Hendri Gunawan, 21, and Abdul Rozak, 22, were arrested along with the evidence in the form of computer, printer, hard disk, modem and Tiki delivery receipts. Based on police investigation, the suspects could sell porn DVDs to the regions throughout Indonesia with turnover reaching IDR 1.1 billion more a year. Director of Bali Police Special Criminal Investigation, Suryanbodo Asmoro, accompanied by the Spokesman of Bali Police Hery Wiyanto explained on Tuesday (Apr 22) the disclosure of the case was based on information from the community saying there was a website offering pornographic DVDs. The website claimed itself as the largest DVD seller in Indonesia. “When we browsed by deploying the member of Cyber Crime Unit IV, Sub-directorate II Directorate of Special Criminal Investigation, location of the
DVD duplication was found at Taman Asri Housing Complex No. 3X, Jalan Batuyang, Batubulan, Gianyar,” said Suryanbodo. He said to have conducted a raid to the house. The three suspects were found at the location with a number of electronic goods (DVD duplicator). The three suspects and the evidence were then secured to the Bali Police. From the results of examination, the three suspects claimed to have undergone such illegal business since 2013. They produced pornographic DVDs and sold them through online media. Apparently such a business was highly favored, so the sales were fairly in demand. As proof, the average monthly sales reached IDR 90 million. If the sale was totaled, it reached over IDR
1.1 billion a year. “It was the first disclosure in Bali,” he told the media crews. The three suspects had their respective role. The suspect Krismantara, doubling as the owner and manager, had a role as provider of DVD duplicators. Not only that, he was also handling the delivery service as subagent of Tiki in Bangli. All this time, he had owned over 1,500 consumers across Indonesia. “He claimed to acquiare IT knowledge through autodidactic learning. He did not have IT school background,” said the former Denpasar Police Chief. Meanwhile, the suspect Hendri and Rozak were the employees of Krismantara. Both suspects served as the operator of the DVD duplicator to produce the pornographic DVDs. Due to the actions of the three suspects, they would be charged with article 29 in conjunction with Article 4 (1) with subsidiary Article 31 and subsidiary Article 32 of Law No. 44/2008 concerning with pornography with maximal penalty of 12 years in prison. “We are still developing the case,” he said. CANBERRA, Australia — Unidentified material that has washed ashore in southwestern Australia is being examined for any link to the lost Malaysian plane, authorities said Wednesday. Police secured the material, which washed ashore 10 kilometers (6 miles) east of Augusta in Western Australia state, the search coordination center said in a statement, without describing the material found. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is examining photographs to assess whether further investigation is needed and if the material is relevant to Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. Augusta is near Australia’s southwestern tip, about 310 kilometers (190 miles) from Perth, where the search has been headquartered. Meanwhile, Australia’s prime minister said Wednesday that failure to find any clue in the most likely crash site of the lost jet would not spell the end of the search, as officials plan soon to bring in more powerful sonar equipment that can delve deeper beneath the Indian Ocean. The search coordination center said a robotic submarine, the U.S. Navy’s Bluefin 21, had scanned more than 80 percent of the 310square-kilometer (120-square-
mile) seabed search zone off the Australian west coast, creating a three-dimensional sonar map of the ocean floor. Nothing of interest had been found. The 4.5-kilometer (2.8-mile) deep search area is a circle 20 kilometers (12 miles) wide around an area where sonar equipment picked up a signal on April 8 consistent with a plane’s black boxes. But the batteries powering those signals are now dead. Defense Minister David Johnston said Australia was consulting with Malaysia, China and the United States on the next phase of the search for the plane, which disappeared March 8. Details on the next phase are likely to be announced next week. Johnston said more powerful towed side-scan commercial sonar equipment would probably be deployed, similar to the remotecontrolled subs that found RMS Titanic 3,800 meters (12,500 feet) under the Atlantic Ocean in 1985 and the Australian WWII wreck HMAS Sydney in the Indian Ocean off the Australian coast, north of the current search area, in 2008. “The next phase, I think, is that we step up with potentially a more powerful, more capable side-scan sonar to do deeper water,” Johnston told The Associated Press.
KATMANDU, Nepal — Dozens of Sherpa guides packed up their tents and left Mount Everest’s base camp Wednesday, after the avalanche deaths of 16 of their colleagues exposed an undercurrent of resentment by Sherpas over their pay, treatment and benefits. With the entire climbing season increasingly thrown into doubt, the government quickly announced that top tourism officials would fly to base camp Thursday to negotiate with the Sherpas and encourage them to return to work. But while Nepal’s government has been heavily criticized for not doing enough for the Sherpas in the wake of last week’s disaster, the deadliest ever on the mountain, one top official blamed the walkout on “hooligans.” “It was crowd behavior — some hooligans were creating problems, but things are getting back to normal,” said Sushil Ghimire, secretary of Nepal’s Tourism Ministry. He and other top officials were to fly by helicopter Thursday to base camp. While it was unclear just how many of the 400 or so Sherpas on the mountain had joined the walkout, a number of expedition companies have already canceled their climbs, and the lucrative climbing season is in disarray. Most attempts to reach Everest’s summit are made in mid-May, when a brief window normally offers better weather. Without the help of the Sherpas,
who are key guides and also haul tons of gear up the mountain, it would be nearly impossible for climbers to scale the mountain. Many climbers will have to forfeit most or all of the money they have spent to go up Everest — at a cost of $75,000 or more. “It is just impossible for many of us to continue climbing while there are three of our friends buried in the snow,” said Dorje Sherpa, an experienced Everest guide from the tiny Himalayan community that has become famous for its high-altitude skills and endurance. Thirteen bodies were recovered after the avalanche. Three Sherpas were still missing in the ice and snow, and are presumed dead. “I can’t imagine stepping over them,” Dorje Sherpa said of the three guides. American climber Ed Marzec, 67, said by phone from base camp that Sherpas were loading their equipment onto a helicopter.
“There are a lot of Sherpas leaving this morning, and in the next two days there will be a huge number that will follow,” said Marzec, 67, who is from California. He said he had already decided to abandon his climb. But Marzec said some smaller companies were hoping to go ahead with their summit attempts. Tusli Gurung, a guide who was at base camp Wednesday, estimated that nearly half the Sherpas had left. Seattle-based Alpine Ascents International announced it was calling off its expedition. “We have all agreed the best thing is to not continue this season’s climb, so that all can mourn the loss of family, friends and comrades in this unprecedented tragedy,” the company said on its website. New Zealand-based Adventure Consultants also said it was canceling its expedition.

NUSA DUA - State-owned toll road operator PT Jasa Marga Tbk has signed an agreement with foreign partners to build toll roads in the country. Jasa Marga signed a memorandum of understanding with toll road companies from Japan, South Korea and Malaysia, its President Adityawarman said after the signing of the agreement at an international business forum of Road Engineering Association of Asia and Australia) on Tuesday. The companies are West Nippon Expressway Company Limited and Japan Expressway International Company Limited from Japan, POSCO Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd from South Korea and CMS Works International Limited from Malaysia. Adityawarman said Jasa Marga is the leader in toll road business in Indonesia, but it still needs to cooperate with other companies. “We could learn from them and there will be transfer of technology in toll road development,” he said. He cited an example, Indonesia needs to learn from Japan the technology in building toll bridges over the sea. “In the partnership, Jasa Marga will retain the majority share,” he said.

GENEVA - Drugmakers Novartis and GlaxoSmithKline announced an extreme makeover Tuesday, unveiling multi-billion-dollar deals also involving US group Eli Lilly in a major shakeup of the pharmaceutical sector. The string of takeovers and ventures by the three giant healthcare groups will see Novartis sharpen its focus on the high-grossing cancer sector, GSK boost its share in vaccines and Eli Lilly strengthen its animal health unit. The mega deals come as the global pharmaceutical industry is quickly shifting to deal with a raft of challenges, including deep cuts in government healthcare spending worldwide. The fast-changing sector was also abuzz Tuesday with speculation that the biggest deal in pharma history could be in the making after a report that US giant Pfizer was interested in buying its British competitor AstraZeneca for a reported $100 billion, sending
the latter’s share price soaring more than 6.0 percent. While that remains a rumour, market observers said Thursday’s deals were a logical rejigging of the market. In the biggest of the deals announced Thursday, Novartis said it plans to buy GSK’s oncology (cancer treatment) business for $16 billion (11.5 billion euros) in cash, including $1.5 billion that would depend on future performance. In exchange, the Swiss group would sell its vaccines division, excluding flu vaccines, to the British company for up to $7.1 billion, also in cash. The two groups further announced a joint venture to create “a world-leading consumer healthcare business,” focused on wellness, oral health, nu-
trition and skin health and expected to book around $10 billion in annual sales. Non-prescription drugs like Novartis’s Nicotinell products aimed at helping people stop smoking and its Voltaran Dolo back pain relief medication, and GSK’s Panadol pain-relief tablets will fall under the joint venture. “The geographic footprint would span all regions, with scale and commercial presence in the developed world as well as in key emerging markets, such as Brazil, China, Mexico and Russia,” Novartis said. Novartis would also sell its animal health division to Eli Lilly for $5.4 billion -- turning the US group into the world’s second biggest market of such products in terms of revenue.
“We believe the divestment of our smaller vaccines and animal health divisions will enable us to realise immediate value from these businesses for our shareholders, and those divisions will benefit from being part of large, global businesses that are also leaders in their segments,” Novartis chief executive Joseph Jimenez said. But more importantly for the Swiss group, the deals enable it to secure ownership of a range of top-line cancer drugs, as it bids to catch up with world leader Roche in oncology treatment. TOKYO - Japan’s Toyota, the world’s biggest auto maker, sold more than 10 million vehicles in the year to March for the first time, it said Wednesday, with last-minute buying ahead of a sales tax increase at home helping it break the key level. The announcement comes despite the firm struggling to recover its reputation for safety after the recall of millions of cars around the world for various problems. The firm said it shifted 10.13 million units in the 12 months to the end of March, a rise of 4.5 percent year on year and likely setting an industry record. Its closest rivals -- Germany’s Volkswagen and US-based General Motors -- report their sales on a calendar-year basis but analysts said it was unlikely they had sold over 10 million vehicles in any 12-month period. The Japanese giant also holds the title of world’s top automaker for 2013 after selling 9.98 million vehicles. Toyota pointed to strong sales at home and in key overseas markets, including China, now the world’s biggest vehicle market. Group sales in Japan rose 3.9 percent to a record 2.4 million units, the third consecutive fiscal year increase, Toyota said. “Rush demand ahead of the consumption tax increase in April this year led to strong sales in Japan for us,” a Toyota spokesman said in an e-mail. MOKPO, South Korea — A colleague calls Capt. Lee Joon-seok the nicest person on the ship. With more than 40 years’ experience at sea, Lee could speak with eloquence about the romance and danger of a life spent on ships. But his reputation now hinges on the moments last week when he delayed an evacuation and apparently abandoned the ferry Sewol as it went down, leaving more than 300 people missing or dead, most of them teenagers. “He was generous, a really nice guy,” said Oh Yong-seok, a 57year-old helmsman, adding that the captain always asked about his wife and kids and was happy to dispense personal and professional advice. “He was probably the nicest person on the ship.” Still, there is no getting away from a video of Lee — on the day his ferry sank with hundreds of people trapped inside — being treated onshore after allegedly landing on one of the first rescue boats. Lee and eight members of his crew have been arrested on suspicion of negligence and abandoning people in need. On Saturday, the handcuffed captain was paraded before flashing cameras, his face hidden beneath the dark hood of a windbreaker. He brusquely denied fleeing the ship, without elaborating, and said he delayed evacuation because of worries about sending passengers into cold waters and fast currents before rescuers arrived. The fall from grace stands in stark contrast to Lee’s striking portrayal, in interviews given to local media over the last decade, of a resilient and adventurous life spent at sea. It gives a chilling irony to his appearance on a 2010 travel show aired on cable broadcaster OBS, where he captained the

He was then captain of another Incheonto-Jeju ferry. “The first ship I sailed on was a hardwood ship that flipped over in waters near Okinawa, Japan. The Japanese Self-Defense Forces saved me with their helicopters,” Lee recalled. “If I hadn’t been saved then, I wouldn’t be here today.” Lee said there were times he thought about giving up sailing. “When I got caught in a storm at sea, I told myself I would never get on a ship again. But the human mind is cunning. After getting over
one crisis, I would forget about such thoughts, and I’ve been sailing on ships until this day,” he told Jeju Today. With a poetic flair, Lee spoke of the countless sunrises and sunsets he’d seen at sea. “When the sun rises, the sea seems to bubble up and roar, but at sunset it’s calm and quiet,” Lee said. “I become solemn, and I think about past memories.” Lee also spoke of his pride in his work, even if it meant time away from his own family. “I take comfort in carrying people on the ferry who are visiting their hometowns, helping them so they can spend happy times with their family, something that’s not granted to me,” Lee told Jeju Today. “Today or tomorrow, I will be with the ship.” The Sewol was a nearly 7,000ton ship with a capacity of 921 passengers. Its owner, Chonghaejin Marine Co. Ltd., had three captains, including Lee, who took control of Sewol just 10 days each month when another captain went on vacation, said an official at Incheon Regional Maritime Affairs & Port Administration. The official declined to be identified, saying he was not authorized to speak about the case while prosecutors are investigating.
DONETSK, Ukraine — Pro-Russian gunmen in eastern Ukraine admitted on Wednesday that they are holding an American journalist who has not been seen since early Tuesday. Simon Ostrovsky, a journalist for Vice News, has been covering the crisis in Ukraine for weeks and was reporting about groups of masked gunmen seizing government buildings in one eastern Ukrainian city after another. Pro-Russia insurgents who have been occupying police stations and other public buildings in eastern Ukraine for more than a week are defying the accords that Russia and Ukraine signed last week, urging all parties in Ukraine to lay down the arms and vacate the public offices. Members of the nationalist Right Sector movement have also been occupying two buildings in the capital, Kiev, for months, but authorities have said the priority is to get the gunmen in eastern Ukraine to vacate the buildings they hold. Stella Khorosheva, a spokeswoman for the pro-Russian insurgents in the eastern city of Slovyansk, confirmed Wednesday that Ostrovsky was being held at the local branch of the Ukrainian security service that they seized more than a week ago. “He’s with us. He’s fine,” Khorosheva told The Associated Press. When asked why Ostrovsky was held captive, Khorosheva said he is “suspected of bad activities,” which she refused to explain. She says the insurgents are holding Ostrovsky pending their own investigation. In a statement, Vice News said it “is in contact with the U.S. State Department and other appropriate government authorities to secure the safety and security of our friend and colleague, Simon Ostrovsky.” Ukraine has been engulfed in its biggest political crisis since the fall of the Soviet Union. The acting government has accused Russia of orchestrating the unrest in eastern Ukraine which it fears Moscow could use as a pretext for an invasion. “These women were promised work as maids or in salons with high salaries here in Malaysia, but were forced to work as prostitutes. They were sent to Malaysia using a passport with fake identity details, especially for their age,” sated Indonesian Ambassador to Malaysia Herman Prayitno, in a press release received here on Wednesday. Seven of the nine trafficking victims are reported to be under age, and they were departed from Indonesia through an individual agent who was known as F.Z or ‘Ina’. The victims explained that there are many more under aged girls who have been forced to work as prostitutes and the revelation of this case is just like the tip of the ice berg phenomena. According to data from the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, the number of human trafficking cases has been on an increase every year from just two cases in 2012, to seven in 2013 and three cases in the
first quarter of 2014. Currently, the Indonesian Embassy is continuously coordinating with the Malaysian Anti-Trafficking Division police to rescue the remaining victims. On April 22, the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur also received three human trafficking victims who worked as prostitutes, where one of them was just 15 years old. The three victims are yet to be repatriated because their information is required to investigate different human trafficking network cases. Currently, the Embassy in Kuala Lumpur continues to work intensively with relevant agencies in Indonesia, especially the Directorate General of Immigration and the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, which has been responding rapidly to support the handling of this case. The response from both Indonesian institutions is to strengthen
passport issuance supervision at the Immigration Offices across Indonesia. Malaysian authorities are now still pursuing the human trafficking perpetrator “Ina” whose identity as well as the Malaysian address has been compromised. “The embassy in Kuala Lumpur invites all parties to work together in prevention of such incidences in the future by conducting public awareness campaigns among all potential migrant workers before working abroad, especially when the agency offers a huge salary,” explained Herman. The Embassy is continuously strengthening its coordination and cooperation with the Malaysian authorities, particularly with the Anti-Trafficking Division police and the Malaysian Immigration to crack down human trafficking networks in Malaysia and provide protection, especially for under age victims.
DUBAI - Indonesia’s most wanted Islamist militant, Santoso, has issued a new call for attacks on anti-terror police, whom he accused of being Australian and US agents, a monitoring group said Tuesday. Santoso, also known as Abu Wardah, who heads a group called the East Indonesia Mujahedeen from the mountains of Central Sulawesi, urged followers to show no mercy against elite counter-terror unit Detachment 88, the US-based SITE Intelligence Group said. “Poison them, if you are not able to kill with the sword. If you have a weapon, then kill,” it quoted him as saying in a 20-minute video published on jihadist forums. “They are invaders of this country, and they want to
apostatise the Islamic Ummah.” Detachment 88 was established after the Bali bombings on Bali that killed 202 people in 2002, mostly Western tourists. It has gained strong public support in Indonesia after claiming the scalps of some of the region’s most-wanted extremists. But it has also faced allegations of torture and unlawful killings that have sparked concerns it is fuelling the jihadist cause. Santoso, who is himself suspected of multiple murders of police, claimed that the unit was “the Australian army, not the Indonesian army, and not a defender of the country of Indonesia”. “They are defending Australia and America.... to destabilise the existing system in Indonesia,” he said. JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) seized several electronic documents while searching the offices of the home affairs ministry and private company to probe the alleged corruption charges in procuring electronic identification cards (e-KTP), on Tuesday. “During the search in several places, investigators seized several documents in paper and electronic forms. So we only seized documents,” KPK spokesman Johan Budi stated here on Wednesday. On Tuesday, KPK investigators searched several places related to the alleged graft case, including the home affairs minister’s room, the office of the Directorate General of Demography and Vital Statistics at the Home Affairs Ministry and the office of PT Quadra Solution on the seventh floor of Menara Duta building in South Jakarta. Johan predicted that the alleged graft case led to a state loss of Rp1.1 trillion. “According to rough calculation at investigation level, the loss reaches Rp1.12 trillion. The budget allocation for the project was disbursed in two phases, with the first phase involving around Ep2 trillion in 2011 and the second phase involving more than Rp3 trillion in 2012. In total, the budget allocation reached Rp6 trillion,” he explained. The KPK alleged that the project was marked up particularly when
it came to unit prices used in the procurement of e-KTP, he pointed out. Also on Tuesday, the KPK named the Director of Demographic Administration Information Management, identified by the initial S, as a suspect in the case. The KPK believes that S had abused his power in the project, which was worth Rp6 trillion. “As usual, the KPK will expand its probe to check the involvement of other parties. But, all this will depend on the result of the investigation to decide whether there are two pieces of adequate evidence that point to the involvement of other parties,” Johan explained. Information about the alleged graft case came to light after the KPK received tip-offs from the public in 2012. “This is the public’s complaint. Of course, one of the pieces of information might come from M. Nazaruddin, but the report did not serve as a basis for conducting investigation. A group of people have reported it (the alleged graft case) to the KPK,” he stated, referring to the former treasurer of the Democrat Party, who is currently serving prison term on a corruption conviction. In September 2013, Nazaruddin informed the KPK about alleged corruption in the procurement of E-KTP, including the alleged flow of funds to a number of House of Representatives (DPR) members.

Crutchlow forced to miss Argentina Ducati MotoGP rider Cal Crutchlow will miss this weekend’s race in Argentina after it emerged that the injuries he sustained at Austin were worse than originally thought. The Briton was diagnosed with a dislocated little finger after crashing during the Grand Prix of the Americas, but further medical checks revealed that the finger was also fractured, requiring surgery. Crutchlow had been expected to be fit to ride in Argentina, but the pain in his hand means he cannot use the front brake properly so he will be replaced by Ducati test rider Michele Pirro. “I’m very sad to let the team down like this because I was really looking forward to racing in Argentina,” said Crutchlow. “Unfortunately I’m still feeling too much pain in my right hand, my knuckles are the most painful part and I’m not in condition to race this weekend. “Now I’m going back to the UK to continue treatment and try and get ready for the race at Jerez [on May 4].” Crutchlow underwent surgery on his hand to have a stabilising pin inserted into his finger.

Darren Fletcher is a disciplined player and a solid shielder of the
defence but his lack of creativity will always be exposed at the highest level while Tom Cleverley has failed to show the necessary quality. The signing of Marouane Fellaini from Moyes’s former club Everton, a panic buy for 27 million pounds ($45.4 million) at the end of the pre-season transfer window, will go down in history as a microcosm of the manager’s doomed stay at the club. The lanky long-haired midfielder has looked like a fish out of water at United, failing to score a goal and frequently lumbering ineffectively around the centre of the pitch. He must also be moved on along with Japanese playmaker Shinji Kagawa who has had limited opportunities to prove his worth but looks too similar to Mata to be accommodated in the same team. Moyes rarely played with two wingers, a cornerstone of Ferguson’s success, but the emergence of 19-year-old Adnan Januzaj was a beacon of hope in a depressing season. HIGHLY INCONSISTENT

Perhaps Moyes’s best achievement at United was persuading England striker Wayne Rooney to stay and his form has been consistently good in a difficult season. United have been linked with some of the best players in the world. MADRID - Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho returned to Spain with an ultra-cautious approach as his team earned a 0-0 draw with surprise Champions League semi-finalists Atletico Madrid in a first leg lacking in excitement on Tuesday. The stalemate at the Vicente Calderon, which Atletico coach Diego Simeone believes gives Chelsea a slight advantage in next week’s return at Stamford Bridge, came at a cost for the 2012 winners, however.

Crutchlow forced to miss Argentina Ducati MotoGP rider Cal Crutchlow will miss this weekend’s race in Argentina after it emerged that the injuries he sustained at Austin were worse than originally thought. The Briton was diagnosed with a dislocated little finger after crashing during the Grand Prix of the Americas, but further medical checks revealed that the finger was also fractured, requiring surgery. Crutchlow had been expected to be fit to ride in Argentina, but the pain in his hand means he cannot use the front brake properly so he will be replaced by Ducati test rider Michele Pirro. “I’m very sad to let the team down like this because I was really looking forward to racing in Argentina,” said Crutchlow. “Unfortunately I’m still feeling too much pain in my right hand, my knuckles are the most painful part and I’m not in condition to race this weekend. “Now I’m going back to the UK to continue treatment and try and get ready for the race at Jerez [on May 4].” Crutchlow underwent surgery on his hand to have a stabilising pin inserted into his finger.

MOKPO, South Korea — A colleague calls Capt. Lee Joon-seok the nicest person on the ship. With more than 40 years’ experience at sea, Lee could speak with eloquence about the romance and danger of a life spent on ships. But his reputation now hinges on the moments last week when he delayed an evacuation and apparently abandoned the ferry Sewol as it went down, leaving more than 300 people missing or dead, most of them teenagers. “He was generous, a really nice guy,” said Oh Yong-seok, a 57year-old helmsman, adding that the captain always asked about his wife and kids and was happy to dispense personal and professional advice. “He was probably the nicest person on the ship.” Still, there is no getting away from a video of Lee — on the day his ferry sank with hundreds of people trapped inside — being treated onshore after allegedly landing on one of the first rescue boats. Lee and eight members of his crew have been arrested on suspicion of negligence and abandoning people in need. On Saturday, the handcuffed captain was paraded before flashing cameras, his face hidden beneath the dark hood of a windbreaker. He brusquely denied fleeing the ship, without elaborating, and said he delayed evacuation because of worries about sending passengers into cold waters and fast currents before rescuers arrived. The fall from grace stands in stark contrast to Lee’s striking portrayal, in interviews given to local media over the last decade, of a resilient and adventurous life spent at sea. It gives a chilling irony to his appearance on a 2010 travel show aired on cable broadcaster OBS, where he captained the

He was then captain of another Incheonto-Jeju ferry. “The first ship I sailed on was a hardwood ship that flipped over in waters near Okinawa, Japan. The Japanese Self-Defense Forces saved me with their helicopters,” Lee recalled. “If I hadn’t been saved then, I wouldn’t be here today.” Lee said there were times he thought about giving up sailing. “When I got caught in a storm at sea, I told myself I would never get on a ship again. But the human mind is cunning. After getting over
one crisis, I would forget about such thoughts, and I’ve been sailing on ships until this day,” he told Jeju Today. With a poetic flair, Lee spoke of the countless sunrises and sunsets he’d seen at sea. “When the sun rises, the sea seems to bubble up and roar, but at sunset it’s calm and quiet,” Lee said. “I become solemn, and I think about past memories.” Lee also spoke of his pride in his work, even if it meant time away from his own family. “I take comfort in carrying people on the ferry who are visiting their hometowns, helping them so they can spend happy times with their family, something that’s not granted to me,” Lee told Jeju Today. “Today or tomorrow, I will be with the ship.” The Sewol was a nearly 7,000ton ship with a capacity of 921 passengers. Its owner, Chonghaejin Marine Co. Ltd., had three captains, including Lee, who took control of Sewol just 10 days each month when another captain went on vacation, said an official at Incheon Regional Maritime Affairs & Port Administration. The official declined to be identified, saying he was not authorized to speak about the case while prosecutors are investigating.

“These women were promised work as maids or in salons with high salaries here in Malaysia, but were forced to work as prostitutes. They were sent to Malaysia using a passport with fake identity details, especially for their age,” sated Indonesian Ambassador to Malaysia Herman Prayitno, in a press release received here on Wednesday. Seven of the nine trafficking victims are reported to be under age, and they were departed from Indonesia through an individual agent who was known as F.Z or ‘Ina’. The victims explained that there are many more under aged girls who have been forced to work as prostitutes and the revelation of this case is just like the tip of the ice berg phenomena. According to data from the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, the number of human trafficking cases has been on an increase every year from just two cases in 2012, to seven in 2013 and three cases in the
first quarter of 2014. Currently, the Indonesian Embassy is continuously coordinating with the Malaysian Anti-Trafficking Division police to rescue the remaining victims. On April 22, the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur also received three human trafficking victims who worked as prostitutes, where one of them was just 15 years old. The three victims are yet to be repatriated because their information is required to investigate different human trafficking network cases. Currently, the Embassy in Kuala Lumpur continues to work intensively with relevant agencies in Indonesia, especially the Directorate General of Immigration and the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, which has been responding rapidly to support the handling of this case. The response from both Indonesian institutions is to strengthen
passport issuance supervision at the Immigration Offices across Indonesia. Malaysian authorities are now still pursuing the human trafficking perpetrator “Ina” whose identity as well as the Malaysian address has been compromised. “The embassy in Kuala Lumpur invites all parties to work together in prevention of such incidences in the future by conducting public awareness campaigns among all potential migrant workers before working abroad, especially when the agency offers a huge salary,” explained Herman. The Embassy is continuously strengthening its coordination and cooperation with the Malaysian authorities, particularly with the Anti-Trafficking Division police and the Malaysian Immigration to crack down human trafficking networks in Malaysia and provide protection, especially for under age victims.
DUBAI - Indonesia’s most wanted Islamist militant, Santoso, has issued a new call for attacks on anti-terror police, whom he accused of being Australian and US agents, a monitoring group said Tuesday. JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) seized several electronic documents while searching the offices of the home affairs ministry and private company to probe the alleged corruption charges in procuring electronic identification cards (e-KTP), on Tuesday. “During the search in several places, investigators seized several documents in paper and electronic forms. So we only seized documents,” KPK spokesman Johan Budi stated here on Wednesday. On Tuesday, KPK investigators searched several places related to the alleged graft case, including the home affairs minister’s room, the office of the Directorate General of Demography and Vital Statistics at the Home Affairs Ministry and the office of PT Quadra Solution on the seventh floor of Menara Duta building in South Jakarta. Johan predicted that the alleged graft case led to a state loss of Rp1.1 trillion. “According to rough calculation at investigation level, the loss reaches Rp1.12 trillion. The budget allocation for the project was disbursed in two phases, with the first phase involving around Ep2 trillion in 2011 and the second phase involving more than Rp3 trillion in 2012. In total, the budget allocation reached Rp6 trillion,” he explained. The KPK alleged that the project was marked up particularly when
it came to unit prices used in the procurement of e-KTP, he pointed out. Also on Tuesday, the KPK named the Director of Demographic Administration Information Management, identified by the initial S, as a suspect in the case. The KPK believes that S had abused his power in the project, which was worth Rp6 trillion. “As usual, the KPK will expand its probe to check the involvement of other parties. But, all this will depend on the result of the investigation to decide whether there are two pieces of adequate evidence that point to the involvement of other parties,” Johan explained. Information about the alleged graft case came to light after the KPK received tip-offs from the public in 2012. “This is the public’s complaint. Of course, one of the pieces of information might come from M. Nazaruddin, but the report did not serve as a basis for conducting investigation. A group of people have reported it (the alleged graft case) to the KPK,” he stated, referring to the former treasurer of the Democrat Party, who is currently serving prison term on a corruption conviction. In September 2013, Nazaruddin informed the KPK about alleged corruption in the procurement of E-KTP, including the alleged flow of funds to a number of House of Representatives (DPR) members.

NUSA DUA - State-owned toll road operator PT Jasa Marga Tbk has signed an agreement with foreign partners to build toll roads in the country. Jasa Marga signed a memorandum of understanding with toll road companies from Japan, South Korea and Malaysia, its President Adityawarman said after the signing of the agreement at an international business forum of Road Engineering Association of Asia and Australia) on Tuesday. The companies are West Nippon Expressway Company Limited and Japan Expressway International Company Limited from Japan, POSCO Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd from South Korea and CMS Works International Limited from Malaysia. Adityawarman said Jasa Marga is the leader in toll road business in Indonesia, but it still needs to cooperate with other companies. “We could learn from them and there will be transfer of technology in toll road development,” he said. He cited an example, Indonesia needs to learn from Japan the technology in building toll bridges over the sea. “In the partnership, Jasa Marga will retain the majority share,” he said.

GENEVA - Drugmakers Novartis and GlaxoSmithKline announced an extreme makeover Tuesday, unveiling multi-billion-dollar deals also involving US group Eli Lilly in a major shakeup of the pharmaceutical sector. The string of takeovers and ventures by the three giant healthcare groups will see Novartis sharpen its focus on the high-grossing cancer sector, GSK boost its share in vaccines and Eli Lilly strengthen its animal health unit. The mega deals come as the global pharmaceutical industry is quickly shifting to deal with a raft of challenges, including deep cuts in government healthcare spending worldwide. The fast-changing sector was also abuzz Tuesday with speculation that the biggest deal in pharma history could be in the making after a report that US giant Pfizer was interested in buying its British competitor AstraZeneca for a reported $100 billion, sending
the latter’s share price soaring more than 6.0 percent. While that remains a rumour, market observers said Thursday’s deals were a logical rejigging of the market. In the biggest of the deals announced Thursday, Novartis said it plans to buy GSK’s oncology (cancer treatment) business for $16 billion (11.5 billion euros) in cash, including $1.5 billion that would depend on future performance. In exchange, the Swiss group would sell its vaccines division, excluding flu vaccines, to the British company for up to $7.1 billion, also in cash. The two groups further announced a joint venture to create “a world-leading consumer healthcare business,” focused on wellness, oral health, nu-
trition and skin health and expected to book around $10 billion in annual sales. Non-prescription drugs like Novartis’s Nicotinell products aimed at helping people stop smoking and its Voltaran Dolo back pain relief medication, and GSK’s Panadol pain-relief tablets will fall under the joint venture. “The geographic footprint would span all regions, with scale and commercial presence in the developed world as well as in key emerging markets, such as Brazil, China, Mexico and Russia,” Novartis said. Novartis would also sell its animal health division to Eli Lilly for $5.4 billion -- turning the US group into the world’s second biggest market of such products in terms of revenue.
“We believe the divestment of our smaller vaccines and animal health divisions will enable us to realise immediate value from these businesses for our shareholders, and those divisions will benefit from being part of large, global businesses that are also leaders in their segments,” Novartis chief executive Joseph Jimenez said. But more importantly for the Swiss group, the deals enable it to secure ownership of a range of top-line cancer drugs, as it bids to catch up with world leader Roche in oncology treatment. TOKYO - Japan’s Toyota, the world’s biggest auto maker, sold more than 10 million vehicles in the year to March for the first time, it said Wednesday, with last-minute buying ahead of a sales tax increase at home helping it break the key level. The announcement comes despite the firm struggling to recover its reputation for safety after the recall of millions of cars around the world for various problems. The firm said it shifted 10.13 million units in the 12 months to the end of March, a rise of 4.5 percent year on year and likely setting an industry record. Its closest rivals -- Germany’s Volkswagen and US-based General Motors -- report their sales on a calendar-year basis but analysts said it was unlikely they had sold over 10 million vehicles in any 12-month period. The Japanese giant also holds the title of world’s top automaker for 2013 after selling 9.98 million vehicles. Toyota pointed to strong sales at home and in key overseas markets, including China, now the world’s biggest vehicle market. Group sales in Japan rose 3.9 percent to a record 2.4 million units, the third consecutive fiscal year increase, Toyota said. “Rush demand ahead of the consumption tax increase in April this year led to strong sales in Japan for us,” a Toyota spokesman said in an e-mail. Japan raised its national sales tax to 8.0 percent from 5.0 percent on April 1 -- the first levy hike since the late 1990s as Tokyo works to bring down one of the rich world’s biggest debt burdens. The participants were not only came from Begawan Foundation but also local community leaders, King of Sibang I Gusti Ngurah Agung Watusila, Sibang Community and some local students of SD 1 Sibang and SMP 3 Sibang. Breeding and Release Manager Mehd said Bali Starling is the icon of the island and become part of Indonesia. Therefore he hoped Bali Starling should be always conserved by all communities. “Besides Bali Starling, we also conserve rare bird,” he said.
Although there were still some people who sold rare bird freely, he urged to constantly focus on conserving rare animal. “We know this is not easy, so we need support from the society,” he asserted. Previously, 65 Bali Starling bred by Begawan Foundation were released in 2006 and 2007 in Nusa Penida. In 2010, Begawan Foundation brought its remaining captive stock along with their enclosures to set up the foundation’s new breeding facilities at Sibang.

Dengue spreads, dozens of residents hospitalized

SEMARAPURA - Dengue (DB) spreads again in Klungkung County. Dozens of residents from various villages had to be treated in Klungkung Hospital and Bintang Hospital, Tuesday (Apr 22). Ironically, five of which were the family of Klungkung Regent, Nyoman Suwirta, living at his private residence at Siku hamlet, Kamasan village, Klungkung. Information compiled from Klungkung Hospital on Tuesday mentioned if the patients with dengue symptoms had significantly increased since last February. In February, there were 40 patients treated at local hospital consisting of 20 men and 20 women. Then, the number of patients with dengue symptoms increased to 48 patients in March, consisting of 28 male patients and 28 female patients. Administration Division Head of Klungkung Hospital, Siti Sunari, with permission from Director of the Klungkung Hospital, Tuesday (Apr 22), said that during this April, until the middle of the month, there were 37 patients. A patient was treated at VIP room, another in Room A, three other people at Room F and five patients in the Room E. Meanwhile, the remaining patients had gone home. One of the patients in Room E, Ni Komang Suarjani, 21, from Bajing hamlet, Tegak village, admitted she initially got fever and had outpatient for three days and the temperature had dropped. However, on the fourth day, temperature of her body was deteriorating, so she was rushed to Klungkung Hospital and hospitalized. She claimed that in her own home neighborhood, a total of three men were attacked by dengue. Meanwhile, outside of the home, there were about five people who had similar conditions. “After a lot of people were attacked by dengue, fogging at that location has been intensified,” she said. Meanwhile, another patient with dengue symptoms, Putu Hendri Suryawan, 27, from Gembalan hamlet, Selat village, claimed to have been treated in Klungkung Hospital since April 17. This big man having full tattoo looked limp on treatment bed of the hospital. Temperature of his body had not gone down. “Around the neighborhood, there are also residents suffering dengue. As far as my knowledge, fogging has not been done,” said his wife Ni Putu Dari. In addition to the two patients, five families (nephew) of Klungkung regent living at Siku hamlet, Kamasan village were also attacked by dengue. Two of them had been treated first at the Klungkung Hospital and known to have been recovered and returned home. Meanwhile, three others, Ari Wahyudi, remaining at grade 2 of high school was still treated at Bintang Hospital, while Sastra Dinata of grade 3 at high school and Rezi of first grade of high school were also still treated in Klungkung Hospital. Regent of Klungkung, Nyoman Suwirta, admitted to reporters on Monday (Apr 21) that his relatives were hit by dengue. All the three relatives had been hospitalized since Sunday (Apr 20). However, their condition was said to have improved and gradually recovered. It was said the Health Agency had fogged the neighborhood immediately at Siku, Kamasan village. Meanwhile, other areas having been affected by dengue were not yet known because the Head of Health Agency, Gusti Ngurah Agung Swastika, when asked for his confirmation on Tuesday was not willing to respond. Siti Sunari added that Klungkung Hospital had provided maximal services for patients. Thus, none of the patients were treated in hallways. “If patients cannot be handled, we are ready to coordinate with the hospital network, so that patient can be quickly handled,” she explained. DENPASAR - The officers of Sub-directorate II Directorate of Special Criminal Investigation, Bali Police, have uncovered the duplication case of thousands of DVDs on April 15, 2014. The three suspects including Putu Krismantara, 27, Hendri Gunawan, 21, and Abdul Rozak, 22, were arrested along with the evidence in the form of computer, printer, hard disk, modem and Tiki delivery receipts. Based on police investigation, the suspects could sell porn DVDs to the regions throughout Indonesia with turnover reaching IDR 1.1 billion more a year. Director of Bali Police Special Criminal Investigation, Suryanbodo Asmoro, accompanied by the Spokesman of Bali Police Hery Wiyanto explained on Tuesday (Apr 22) the disclosure of the case was based on information from the community saying there was a website offering pornographic DVDs. The website claimed itself as the largest DVD seller in Indonesia. “When we browsed by deploying the member of Cyber Crime Unit IV, Sub-directorate II Directorate of Special Criminal Investigation, location of the
DVD duplication was found at Taman Asri Housing Complex No. 3X, Jalan Batuyang, Batubulan, Gianyar,” said Suryanbodo. He said to have conducted a raid to the house. The three suspects were found at the location with a number of electronic goods (DVD duplicator). The three suspects and the evidence were then secured to the Bali Police. From the results of examination, the three suspects claimed to have undergone such illegal business since 2013. They produced pornographic DVDs and sold them through online media. Apparently such a business was highly favored, so the sales were fairly in demand. As proof, the average monthly sales reached IDR 90 million. If the sale was totaled, it reached over IDR
1.1 billion a year. “It was the first disclosure in Bali,” he told the media crews. The three suspects had their respective role. The suspect Krismantara, doubling as the owner and manager, had a role as provider of DVD duplicators. Not only that, he was also handling the delivery service as subagent of Tiki in Bangli. All this time, he had owned over 1,500 consumers across Indonesia. “He claimed to acquiare IT knowledge through autodidactic learning. He did not have IT school background,” said the former Denpasar Police Chief. Meanwhile, the suspect Hendri and Rozak were the employees of Krismantara. Both suspects served as the operator of the DVD duplicator to produce the pornographic DVDs. Due to the actions of the three suspects, they would be charged with article 29 in conjunction with Article 4 (1) with subsidiary Article 31 and subsidiary Article 32 of Law No. 44/2008 concerning with pornography with maximal penalty of 12 years in prison. “We are still developing the case,” he said. CANBERRA, Australia — Unidentified material that has washed ashore in southwestern Australia is being examined for any link to the lost Malaysian plane, authorities said Wednesday. Police secured the material, which washed ashore 10 kilometers (6 miles) east of Augusta in Western Australia state, the search coordination center said in a statement, without describing the material found. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is examining photographs to assess whether further investigation is needed and if the material is relevant to Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. Augusta is near Australia’s southwestern tip, about 310 kilometers (190 miles) from Perth, where the search has been headquartered. Meanwhile, Australia’s prime minister said Wednesday that failure to find any clue in the most likely crash site of the lost jet would not spell the end of the search, as officials plan soon to bring in more powerful sonar equipment that can delve deeper beneath the Indian Ocean. The search coordination center said a robotic submarine, the U.S. Navy’s Bluefin 21, had scanned more than 80 percent of the 310square-kilometer (120-square-
mile) seabed search zone off the Australian west coast, creating a three-dimensional sonar map of the ocean floor. Nothing of interest had been found. The 4.5-kilometer (2.8-mile) deep search area is a circle 20 kilometers (12 miles) wide around an area where sonar equipment picked up a signal on April 8 consistent with a plane’s black boxes. But the batteries powering those signals are now dead. Defense Minister David Johnston said Australia was consulting with Malaysia, China and the United States on the next phase of the search for the plane, which disappeared March 8. Details on the next phase are likely to be announced next week. Johnston said more powerful towed side-scan commercial sonar equipment would probably be deployed, similar to the remotecontrolled subs that found RMS Titanic 3,800 meters (12,500 feet) under the Atlantic Ocean in 1985 and the Australian WWII wreck HMAS Sydney in the Indian Ocean off the Australian coast, north of the current search area, in 2008. “The next phase, I think, is that we step up with potentially a more powerful, more capable side-scan sonar to do deeper water,” Johnston told The Associated Press.
KATMANDU, Nepal — Dozens of Sherpa guides packed up their tents and left Mount Everest’s base camp Wednesday, after the avalanche deaths of 16 of their colleagues exposed an undercurrent of resentment by Sherpas over their pay, treatment and benefits. With the entire climbing season increasingly thrown into doubt, the government quickly announced that top tourism officials would fly to base camp Thursday to negotiate with the Sherpas and encourage them to return to work. But while Nepal’s government has been heavily criticized for not doing enough for the Sherpas in the wake of last week’s disaster, the deadliest ever on the mountain, one top official blamed the walkout on “hooligans.” “It was crowd behavior — some hooligans were creating problems, but things are getting back to normal,” said Sushil Ghimire, secretary of Nepal’s Tourism Ministry. He and other top officials were to fly by helicopter Thursday to base camp. While it was unclear just how many of the 400 or so Sherpas on the mountain had joined the walkout, a number of expedition companies have already canceled their climbs, and the lucrative climbing season is in disarray. Most attempts to reach Everest’s summit are made in mid-May, when a brief window normally offers better weather. Without the help of the Sherpas,
who are key guides and also haul tons of gear up the mountain, it would be nearly impossible for climbers to scale the mountain. Many climbers will have to forfeit most or all of the money they have spent to go up Everest — at a cost of $75,000 or more. “It is just impossible for many of us to continue climbing while there are three of our friends buried in the snow,” said Dorje Sherpa, an experienced Everest guide from the tiny Himalayan community that has become famous for its high-altitude skills and endurance. Thirteen bodies were recovered after the avalanche. Three Sherpas were still missing in the ice and snow, and are presumed dead. “I can’t imagine stepping over them,” Dorje Sherpa said of the three guides. American climber Ed Marzec, 67, said by phone from base camp that Sherpas were loading their equipment onto a helicopter.
“There are a lot of Sherpas leaving this morning, and in the next two days there will be a huge number that will follow,” said Marzec, 67, who is from California. He said he had already decided to abandon his climb. But Marzec said some smaller companies were hoping to go ahead with their summit attempts. Tusli Gurung, a guide who was at base camp Wednesday, estimated that nearly half the Sherpas had left. Seattle-based Alpine Ascents International announced it was calling off its expedition. “We have all agreed the best thing is to not continue this season’s climb, so that all can mourn the loss of family, friends and comrades in this unprecedented tragedy,” the company said on its website. New Zealand-based Adventure Consultants also said it was canceling its expedition.

Saudi Arabia reports 11 new cases of MERS virus, first in Mecca Reuters
ABU DHABI - Saudi Arabia said on Wednesday it had discovered 11 more cases of the potentially deadly Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), including what appeared to be the first case in the Muslim holy city of Mecca. A health ministry statement said eight of the people were in intensive care, two were stable, including a 24-year-old Saudi man from the “holy capital” Mecca, and one showed no symptoms. Three of those affected worked in health care, it said. Saudi Arabia has witnessed a jump in the rate of infection with the virus in recent weeks, with many of the new cases recorded in Jeddah, the kingdom’s second largest city. Of Wednesday’s 11 new cases, four were recorded in the Saudi capital Riyadh, six in Jeddah - the second largest city and the main entry point for pilgrims visiting nearby Mecca - and one in Mecca itself, the statement said. The jump in Saudi cases is of particular concern as the country is expected to see a large influx of pilgrims from around the world in July during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, followed in early October by the arrival of millions of people to perform the
annual Haj in Mecca and Medina. The latest cases bring the total number of confirmed cases in the kingdom to 272, of whom 81 have died. MERS emerged in the Middle East in 2012 and is from the same family as the SARS virus, which killed around 800 people worldwide after first appearing in China in 2002. MERS can cause coughing, fever and pneumonia. Although the worldwide number of MERS infections is fairly small, the more than 40 percent death rate among confirmed cases and the spread of the virus beyond the Middle East is keeping scientists and public health officials on alert. Fakieh said he was pleased that a number of patients, including doctors, were recovering but said that there were a few critical cases still receiving medical care.
NEW YORK - Strength training, traditionally favored by body builders seeking to bulk up, has become the go-to regimen for athletes, weekend warriors and exercise enthusiasts determined to slim down. Fitness experts say metabolic strength training, a high-intensity, full-body interval workout, can add definition to the shape of runners, cyclists and other cardio devotees willing to put some muscle into it. Florida-based trainer Nick Tumminello believes strength training should be the primary form of exercise for everyone except beginners. “If you’re looking to lose fat, go with strength training,” said Tumminello, author of “Strength Training for Fat Loss.” “Watch your diet to reveal your shape, and strength train to improve that shape.” It is not your grandfather’s body-building program. While traditional strength training uses free weights or weight machine to build endurance and muscles, metabolic strength training combines high-intensity interval circuits with changing combinations and repetitions using free weights, kettlebells, barbells, dumbbells and resistance bands to increase the metabolic rate after and during the workout. “The body-building model is great for maximizing body building, but for the average individual looking for fat loss, or to feel better, or to improve general fitness, this creates more of a metabolic disturbance,” he said. Because the combinations are intense, Tumminello recommends starting at once or twice a
week and building up gradually to three or four times. “You do need recovery time,” he said, adding that too many beginners tend to take an all-or-nothing approach. “Try to set a realistic goal.” Jenn Burke, a San Franciscobased personal trainer and fitness manager at Crunch, a national chain of gyms, said that steady cardiovascular activity, such as running or cycling, is great for burning lots of calories at a time and increasing heart rate and lung capacity. But unlike cardio activity, strength training will continue to burn calories up to 72 hours after the exercise is over through a phenomenon called after-burn. Modern strength training, she said, is less about how much weight you can lift than it is about how to make the body more efficient, lean, toned and strong. “Strength training is about the quality of life,” Burke said. “You can be skinny but not have the ability to lift your suitcase.” Although research has shown people cannot spot reduce, such as targeting just the thighs or arms for slimming, Burke said it is possible to enhance an area of the body with strength training. “Men are generally drawn to body building seeking size or presence,” she said. “Women come for toned and sculpted arms, legs and butts.” Muscle strength, increased bone mineral density and increased strength in the connective tissues or tendons and ligaments are among the benefits of strength training, according to Jacque Ratliff, an exercise physiologist with the American Council on Exercise.

DENPASAR - The number of foreign tourists visiting Bali rose 14.87 percent to 835,099 in the first quarter of this year from 727,013 in the same period last year. “The fairly significant growth was attributable to success in a number of international conferences in Bali in 2013,” tourism observer Dewa Nyoman Putra said on Wednesday. Dewa Nyoman said 95 percent of people spending holidays in Bali repeated visits to the country’s main tourist destination. He said despite the global crisis, the number of visitors to Bali from Europe and the United States, which are the worst hit by the crisis, rose in the first quarter of this year. An increase was also recorded in the number of visitors from other ASEAN countries, he said. Based on the official record of the Bali tourism office, the number of visitors from other ASEAN countries rose from 32,521 in January, to 34,840 in February and to 36,417 in March, 2014. The number of Europeans visiting Bali reached 155,674 in the January-March period of 2014 or 18.64 percent of the total number of visitors to the island and those form the United States totaled 41.690 visitors. Bali is still one of the favorite destinations for international holiday makers, Dewa Nyoman Putra said.

DENPASAR - Air pollution in urban areas is increasingly alarming. It is triggered by the high air pollution caused by various factors. One of the causes of high air pollution in urban areas is the vehicle exhaust. On that account, Denpasar Municipality through the Environment Agency (BLH) continues its efforts to prevent the increasing air pollution through vehicle emission testing. Even, this year the Environment Agency targets at least 1,000 vehicles so their exhaust gas content can be seen. The Head of Denpasar Environment Agency, AA Bagus Sudharsana, when met on the sidelines of emission testing at Renon, Tuesday (Apr 22), said that at this time the emission test also involved the police element, Transportation Agency and companies selling motor vehicles. “The motor vehicle emission test is carried out with regard to the Earth Day and the environment,” said Sudharsana. He claimed the motor vehicle test had been carried out regularly every year. Implementation of the emission test at this time was conducted four days in succession. In 2013, the emission test targeted 2,000 motor vehicles where the results of emission test indicated that 86 percent of the vehicles passed the emission test, while the remaining vehicles did not qualify. For the year 2014, his party targeted the emission test to 1,000 motor vehicles. NEGARA - Extermination to 31 race dogs worth millions of rupiahs by Quarantine Office at Gilimanuk at the beginning of last week reaped condemnation from animal lovers. Such an action was considered barbaric and should not be done, let alone be committed on the Island of Bali. Some groups of animal lovers revealed last weekend their disappointment with the action taken by the officers that accidentally killed dozens of animals known to be human best friend. Ironically, they heard there was an allegation of blackmail committed by individual of the Quarantine Officer staff related to the capture of contraband dogs. A source from Kuta, Ss, who was about receiving a dog, deplored the attitude of the quarantine officers said to blackmail because the dogs detained for a week in the Quarantine Office were actually not infected by rabies. “My friend (Quarantine) had come, but requested some amount of money on the grounds of document submission, but the value is very much so we rejected it,” he explained. This source also denied if the dogs had no owners because the names of recipient had been clearly written on the cage. According to him, the local officials at Gilimanuk gave an offer between IDR 9 million and IDR 45 million. Since the value was high enough, the owners refused. However, a day after the rejection, the dogs were instantly exterminated. Meanwhile, condemnation action against the extermination also appeared on social media. A video on the extermination uploaded in YouTube got a lot of sympathy from site visitors. The video with duration of 16 minutes
contained the footage of extermination to dozens of race dogs with injection by quarantine officers. Since the video was uploaded on April 17, it has been viewed for 4,800 times and got hundreds of comments that entirely blasphemed such an action. The sad side in the video was seen when a female officer photographed the dogs using a mobile phone camera before the dogs were euthanized. After all the 31 dogs died, they were dried in a row at the courtyard of the Quarantine Office. Section Head of Monitoring and Enforcement, the Denpasar Agricultural Quarantine Office, IB Eka Ludra, told reporters on Sunday (Apr 20) that the extermination had been based on procedures of the Quarantine passing through several stages. The Quarantine Office had also attempted to summon the owners or shippers of the dogs, but they did not come until the specified deadline. According to him, since there were no people claim to be responsible until the deadline, his party decided to exterminate the dogs. He added the extermination was done on Tuesday afternoon (Apr 15), but the day after the arrest or on Sunday (Apr 13) the officers at Gilimanuk had made denial where the animals were denied from entering Bali because there was a ban. According to him, the delivery was not equipped with necessary document. Regarding the allegation of blackmail, Ludra strongly denied. His party was ready to be confronted with the people claiming to be blackmailed. But if there was quarantine officer at Gilimanuk who blackmailed, Ludra asked the name for easy inspection. According to him, the infrastructure development was carried out by Badung government through the Human Settlement Agency. The Municipality Waterworks could only operate when the infrastructure had been built.
As reported previously, in the plenary session of the Badung House where one of the agendas was the explanation on the regional bylaw draft on the equity of regional government in the Municipality Waterworks, the Regent Gde Agung explained that capital investment was to build new transmission and distribution system, through construction of reservoirs, installation of main pipe networks and pipeline distribution network. Construction of the transmission and distribution system was expected to improve the quality of service and increase the coverage of services in North Badung and South Badung. Equity participation in the Municipality Waterworks totally amounted to IDR 235,741,840,337. MANGUPURA - As being desperate to torture her stepson, a woman from Sumbawa, Nurhalimah aka Upa, 21, was arrested by Badung Police Criminal Investigation, Tuesday (Apr 22). Ironically, Ahmad Rifai aka Fai, 4, remaining a toddler had to die after receiving treatment at Sanglah Hospital, Saturday early morning (Apr 19). Then, the suspect was examined in the Badung Police. When met during the examination in the Women and Children Protection (PPA) unit, Upa officially admitted to be a stepmother after marrying the victim’s father, Ismail Marsuki at the end of 2009 in Sumbawa. Despite knowing Marsuki was a widower, Upa was determined to resume her intention to establish a marital bond. “When coming to Bali at the end of 2010, I was preparing to take care of Fai who was still a baby,” she said while looking down and shutting her face with hands. As the age grew, Upa complained about the nature of Fai that was often fussy. Due to being annoyed, she admitted to frequently scold at the victim as well as to hit the thigh and buttock of the victim with her bare hands. At the end of 2013, Upa starting to be pregnant was more sensitive to the nature of Fai. Even, this five-month pregnant woman was increasingly sadistic and hit Fai with various objects around her like a broom stick and slippers. “Fai was often fussy, hard to be asked to eat and take a bath. Therefore, I hit him at the thigh and buttock. Because of being so upset, I also hit his head and body with a broom stick for several times,” said the thin-boned woman. Furthermore, added Upa, a few days before being taken to hospital, Upa and the victim got traffic accident when riding a motorcycle at Pemenang hamlet, Kukuh village, Marga, Tabanan. Due to such accident, the victim got injuries to his temple and feet, but he was not taken to the doctor. “After the accident, in fact the wound in his temple swelled. Besides, he could complain about headache and stomach ache on Friday morning. However, I ignored him because I think it was not severe,” she said. On the following day, Saturday (Apr 12), Fai was taken to Badung Hospital and then referred on Wednesday (Apr 16). Meanwhile, Upa who was panic even ignored him and intended to go home to Sumbawa. However, the intention was cancelled because she had no money. Ultimately, she only kept silence for four days at Padang Bai Harbor. “I only had money worth IDR 150,000. Since it was not enough, I was just sitting in the harbor from Monday to Thursday. Even, I should sell my earrings for IDR 150,000 for daily consumption,” she said. On Friday, she was back to her boarding house at Batu Lumbung hamlet, Gulingan village, Mengwi, Badung. However, on Saturday (Apr 19), she got information on the death of Rifai. It made Upa fear and she decided to hide in the house of friend at Sanggulan Kediri, Tabanan. “On Monday morning, my husband (Marsuki) called and he told that I was chased by police. Then, I was called again in the afternoon to surrender. Finally, I surrendered at Kediri Police,” she said while adding the officers of Kediri Police making coordination with the Badung Police took the suspect to headquarters of Badung Police. Meanwhile, the Chief of Badung Police Criminal Investigation, Wisnu Wardana, when met in his office on Tuesday (Apr 22) confirmed that the offender was still undergoing the investigation, while the evidence of the torture such as sandals and a broom stick had been secured in Badung Police. In addition, his party was still awaiting the medical report from the hospital. “We are still investigating the offender. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Indian film awards arrive in Tampa, but why? Associated Press Writer
TAMPA, Florida — The so-called Bollywood Oscars have been held in Macau, Singapore, London and now ... Tampa? Starting on Wednesday, hundreds of Indian film stars and thousands of Bollywood fans are expected to flood this city for the International Indian Film Academy’s awards extravaganza, four days of song-and-dance performances and movie screenings. The event caps off with the awards ceremony Saturday.

Even though Tampa has hosted four Super Bowls and the 2012 Republican National Convention, its small Indian population makes it an unusual choice for the awards. The event has been held in big cities across the globe as the success of Bollywood has grown, but it’s the first time in its 15-year history that the group has gathered in the United States. About 800 million people will watch the ceremony on television or the Internet, according to organizers. Shades of Bollywood are everywhere in the area. The top floor of the Tampa International Airport parking garage was transformed into a reception area for Bollywood bigwigs and autograph-seeking fans. Shahid Kapoor, an actor with 4 million followers on Twitter, arrived to a small crowd at the VIP area Monday. He is scheduled to co-host the awards ceremony. Elsewhere, security was trained on how best to handle enthusiastic fans and service workers were taught how to accommodate Indian visitors (tip: “just because you don’t recognize them, doesn’t mean they aren’t famous”). Tampa was chosen because city and tourism leaders were aggressive. Sabbas Joseph, the director of the academy and entertainment company Wizcraft International, said Tampa officials even took a few jabs at the competition, telling him: “Orlando mice, Miami Vice and Tampa nice.” Tourism leaders are thrilled and hope to draw more wealthy Indian tourists to the area. Some 30,000 people are
expected. Hollywood superstar Kevin Spacey will teach a master acting class and John Travolta will be honored at the awards show as the “Most Popular All Time International Star In India.” Santiago Corrada, the president and CEO of Visit Tampa Bay, the area’s tourism arm, said a private donor gave about $9 million to help bring the awards to the area. The county and state provided about $1.1 million to promote the event and market Florida. The city has shown there’s an appetite for Indian glitter and glam, despite having a small Indian-American population. Cheap seats at Raymond James Stadium, usually where the Tampa Bay Buccaneers football team plays, start at $93. Pricier options run all the way up to $3,295. Nearly all of 25,000 available tickets have been sold.

DENPASAR - Activists of the Balinese People Forum Rejecting Reclamation (ForBali) flew kites rejecting reclamation in conjunction with the celebration of the Earth Day on Mertasari Beach, Sanur, Tuesday (Apr 22). Not only ForBali, such an action was also followed by musicians as well as elements of the community who expressed their rejection against the reclamation plan. Spokesperson of ForBali, Komang Sastrawan, said the kites flying in the sky of Mertasari had become a symbol of complaint to the sky. Primarily it related to the insistence of the government and investors who wanted to rape the mother earth in many ways. “Reclamation plan clearly rules out the adverse effects on the environment and the future of the earth of Bali Island. We have seen a lot of bad effects due to reclamation in various areas, so that through this kite we want to complain to the sky about the plan of the government and the investors to rape the earth,” explained Sastrawan. This Advocacy and Campaign Division Head of the Friends of the Earth (Walhi) of Bali added the government had also made massive efforts to change the regulations inhibiting the reclamation plan at Benoa Bay. Central government, Bali government and Badung government were said to conspire in order to revise the Presidential Regulation No. 45/2011 on Spatial Planning of Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar and Tabanan (Presidential Regulation on Sarbagita) where the control of amendment acceleration was taken over by central government through the MP3EI scheme. “The government considers the conservation status of Benoa Bay in article 55 paragraph 5 inhibits the reclamation plan by PT TWBI, so the Presidential Regulation, according to the government, should be revised. If the government wants to revise the Presidential Regulation just to accommodate the reclamation plan by PT TWBI, then the government should also know that the Presidential Regulation on Sarbagita can only be reviewed in 5 years,” he said.
