LOS ANGELES - Spice Girl Melanie ‘Mel B’ Brown filed for divorce from her husband after nearly 10 years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. Court papers filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday show that British pop star Brown, 41, and husband Stephen Belafonte, a TV producer, have been separated since December. Brown requested joint legal and physical custody of the couple’s daughter, five-year-old Madison Brown Belafonte. Representatives for Brown did not immediately respond to Reuters for comment and efforts to reach Belafonte were
unsuccessful. Brown, best known as Scary Spice in 1990s British pop group Spice Girls, married Belafonte in June 2007. Brown has two other children from previous relationships. LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department apologized on Tuesday for briefly detaining Grammy-winning hip hop artist Wyclef Jean in handcuffs during a robbery investigation, after Jean said he was “treated like a criminal” by law enforcement officers. The sheriff’s department released a statement describing its investigation in the early hours of Monday morning into a violent robbery in West Hollywood, a trendy municipality neighboring Los Angeles, and apologized “for any inconvenience this process caused Mr. Jean.” “It is unfortunate that Mr. Jean was detained for six minutes during this investigation, as he had no involvement whatsoever in this violent crime,” the sheriff’s depart-
ment said. Representatives for Jean did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The sheriff’s department said the suspects allegedly attacked and held up a man and a woman at gunpoint and robbed them of their possessions before driving away. Jean was pulled over shortly after the incident because the vehicle he was in matched the description of the suspects’ car. The statement said Jean was placed in handcuffs because he displayed “furtive movements and demeanor,” such as walking towards the trunk of the car despite deputies asking him not to. The suspects in the robbery were later arrested. In tweets and video of the incident posted to his Instagram and
Twitter feed, Jean, the Haitian-born former Fugees singer, said he appeared to have been the victim of “another case of mistaken identity” and threatened to sue. “I was treated like a criminal until other police showed up and pointed out they had wrong person,” Jean, 47, wrote on Twitter. “I am sure no father wants his sons or daughters to see him in Handcuffs especially if he is innocent,” he added. Jean emigrated to the United States from Haiti at the age of 9 but has maintained his Haitian citizenship. Tuesday’s incident comes amid heightened sensitivity about racial issues and the U.S. justice system following a spate of shootings by police of unarmed black people. (rtr)

Minister of tourism criticizes waste problem in Bali DENPASAR - Garbage problem having become the scourge of the Island of the Gods was sharply criticized by the Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya, more specifically the mounting piles of garbage in the Suwung landfill. Such poor spectacle is clearly visible from the aircraft that will land at Ngurah Rai Airport. This can surely give a negative impression to travelers. “Waste problems are never resolved and many a time I’ve got angry. As soon as landing, the piles of garbage is visible below,” he said amid the Development Planning Meeting (Musrenbang) for Formulation of Development Plan (RKPD) of Bali Province 2018 at Wiswasabha Utama, the office of the governor, on Tuesday (Mar. 21). Arief added that annual meeting of the IMF and World Bank to be held in Bali in October 2018 should be used to resolve the garbage problem. Similarly, the congestion problem is equally critical to waste problem. Moreover, there will be 15,000 participants from around the world that will attend
the meeting. “Economic core of Bali is tourism. We have also agreed that the main problem lies in the infrastructure and basic utilities. We need to build roads, water, electricity and internet plus resolving garbage problem,” he added. For road problem, according to Arief, Bali can send a letter to the ministry for maritime considering that Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs, Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, will become the coordinator related to the IMF and the World Bank meeting. Another problem is related to the existence of one international airport in Bali. According to him, the airport in North Bali must be soon realized because in principle the minister of transportation, minister of tourism, and the governor of Bali have agreed. “This should be immediately realized. The location is available and so is the investor. It is too critical for Bali with single airport. If there is something urgent, flight cannot land here,” he concluded. (kmb32)

According to him, Bali should lead the utilization of geothermal resources. Bali is expected not to depend on the supplies of Java. If any time there is an unresolved problem, he hoped Bali will not be getting dark. Hopefully, there is always a standalone backup. The Government Regulation No.12/2017 opens broad opportunities for investors to invest in solar power plant. “It is not just in Bali but also across Indonesia,” he said. Dozens of houses and three shrines damaged by earthquake
NEGARA - An earthquake with the magnitude of 6.4 shook Bali on Wednesday (Mar. 22) at 7:10 with the epicenter at 8.88 South Altitude, 115.24 East Longitude and 23 km Southeast of Denpasar at a depth of 117 km affected up to Jembrana.

Regent strives for repair in amended budget
BANGLI - Destruction of the candi bentar (split gates) at Kehen Temple due to earthquake on Wednesday morning (Mar. 22) received the attention of the Regent of Bangli, I Made Gianyar. With the Division Head of Public Welfare, Jro Widarta, Made Gianyar came down immediately to inspect the damage to the temple building belonging to the cultural heritage. Regent said to immediately restore the damage in this year’s amended regional budget. When met after his site inspection to Kehen Temple, Gianyar stated that the earthquake damaging several temple and house buildings is a natural disaster. The regent urged the community to contemplate on the successive natural disasters occurred in Bangli recently. “Disasters occur everywhere. After hit by floods and landslides, there has been an earthquake. As the lyric of pop song by Ebiet G Ade, it is worth becoming our reflection,” he said last Wednesday. In addition to Kehen Temple, the regent got information if the earthquake last Wednesday also damaged a number of shrines and houses in several other locations. To know the exact amount of the damages, he claimed to have asked the regional disaster mitigation
agency (BPBD) and village authorities to conduct data collection. Regarding the repairs to damages caused by the earthquake, Regent Made Gianyar declared it certainly should be done immediately. “Who should repair them? If they belong to individual capacity, it should be done by the individual itself. Those belonging to domain of the government will surely be restored by local government both due to landslides and earthquakes including the Kehen Temple belonging to domain of district government,” he said. Gianyar said that his government will seek to repair the damages to the entrance gates of Kehen Temple immediately in this 2017 amended regional budget. Moreover, next year there is a plan to implement grandiose ritual at Kehen Temple. “So, prior to the grandiose ritual, such damage should have been fixed,” he added. Meanwhile, Jero Gede Kehen when interviewed last Wednesday said the entrance gates at Kehen Temple were built in 1965. Since the construction, the entrance gates made from rocks were never restored completely. To repair the damage due to the earthquake, he is going to perform rehabilitation included the shifting of the entrance gates. (kmb40)
The earthquake lasting about 10 seconds almost destroyed dozens of homes and family shrines owned by residents, and a resident got minor injury due to falling roof. It occurred at Kaleran hamlet, Yehembang, Mendoyo. Headman of Yehembang, Mendoyo, Made Semadi, stated that there are 50 homes suffered damage roof. Fallen roof of people’s houses occurred at the end of their hood. In addition, three shrine buildings belonging to residents are badly damaged. The worst damage happened to family shrine owned by Wayan Nestra, 65, a resident of Kaleran hamlet, Yehembang. His padma shrine was broken on the upper part while many other shrines turned sloping and their compound wall cracked. In addition, Wayan Suadnyana, 33, a local resident, also became a victim. He suffered lacerations on his forehead as a result of the fallen roof tile of his house when the earthquake occurred. He told at that time he was in the house with small children. When the earthquake happened, he ran out of the house while carrying his child. Roof of his house fell onto his forehead. “Luckily, my son is okay,” he said when visited by headman of Mendoyo and Yehembang police chief. Headman of Yehembang, Made Semadi, said that after the incident he immediately checked and collected data regarding the residents who became the victims. He said that at least 50 residents’ houses suffered minor damages. All houses suffered roof damages because the roof fell out. Each house suffered fallen roof. He also confirmed that three family shrines of residents were damaged. Besides, a building of SDN 4 Yehembang elementary school also suffered damages to the roof and plafond and their walls cracked. He has taken measures by providing modest assistance to the victims to repair their roof tiles that fell out and reported the incident to the government of Jembrana. Meanwhile, two houses at Pohsanten village, Mendoyo, were also reported to suffer fallen roof. Likewise, some houses at Yeh Sumbul, Mendoyo, suffered similar condition as well. (120)

DENPASAR - To reduce the number of vehicles on the road, Denpasar police traffic unit makes synergy with municipal government of Denpasar by designing a school transport service, especially for students in Denpasar. This transport service is intended for elementary, junior high and high school students. In the first phase, the route prepared is for North Denpasar and East Denpasar. This program will be realized at the beginning of 2017/2018 academic year. “This breakthrough is made in order to support one of the programs of the Denpasar municipality in creating security, safety, traffic order and smoothness. The service will be free of charge as being subsidized by the Denpasar municipal government,” said Denpasar Police Traffic Unit, Heri Supriawan, on Wednesday (Mar. 22). Dissemination of the school transport services, continued Heri, is carried out in collaboration with stakeholders and just targets some schools. According to him, it was commenced on Monday (Mar. 20) at SMPN 8 Denpasar junior high school, while at SMPN 3 Denpasar was held on Wednesday (Mar. 22) and then at SMPN 1 Denpasar will be held on Saturday (Mar. 25). “Special vehicle with special interior design has been prepared. It is meant that students can feel comfortable and safe,” he said. The program is intended to provide the ease, smoothness and comfort for students to use public transport. In addition, it is an educational means for students that using school transport can reduce the pick-up of students by using private car and reduce traffic density as well as real manifestation of the government and police’s role in providing school transport and traffic smoothness. It is one of the direct assistance services (BLP) of the Denpasar municipality to alleviate the cost of education. The route of North Denpasar and surrounding areas include Jalan Tunggul Ametung - Ahmad Yani - Gatot Subroto - Nangka Selatan Pattimura - Belimbing - Surapati and Kamboja. Then the route of East Denpasar and surrounding areas include from University of Ngurah Rai - Jalan Padma - Kemuda - Seroja - Ratna - Plawa - Pacar - Jepun and Kamboja. “Those having interest to use the facility must register and fill in the form that must be approved by parents and the principal. The vehicle has very good condition with a special design both interior and exterior. Additionally, it is equipped with CCTV, Wi-Fi, full air conditioning and other amenities. Chief of Tabanan Health Agency, Nyoman Suratmika, said on Wednesday (Mar. 22) that some time ago the pig samples put in the same pigsty suspected of spreading the Streptococcus suis bacteria is negative. On the other hand, if the result of the pig sample is negative surely there will be another question regarding the origin of the Streptococcus suis bacteria that infected three village residents of Pengayehan, Gubug, Tabanan, where one of the patients is confirmed to be positive to MSS. “Two other patients are still suspects and they indeed indicate the symptoms of MSS. However, since the laboratory results for these two patients are not clear, it is required to perform VCR checks to Singapore,” said Suratmika.
Since the source of bacteria is not known for certain whether it is from pigs or other mammals, Suratmika appealed to the public to apply clean and healthy behaviors, especially in preparing food. “Please prepare foods particularly meat until well done. Such a method is safe and killing bacteria with the temperature above 56 degrees for 30 minutes,” he said. Streptococcus suis bacteria itself can live outside the body of its host. In contrast to viruses, they depend on the host. These bacteria can be found in a free environment, especially in the infected animal feces. Akie had been set to be honorary principal of the school, which was to open in April with a curriculum based on prewar patriotism that taught students to be subjects, not citizens. She cut her ties after the scandal broke. The group currently runs a kindergarten with a similar curriculum. Kagoike, in testimony to an upper house budget committee under oath - which means he could face perjury charges if he is later found to have lied - said he received money from Abe’s wife in 2015 when the two of them were alone in a room. “She said ‘please, this is from Shinzo Abe,’ and gave me an envelope with 1 million yen in it,” Kagoike said. “Abe’s wife apparently says she doesn’t remember this at all, but since this was a matter of honour to us, I remember it quite vividly.” His testimony was broadcast live on four of Japan’s six television networks. BUSINESS Philippine economy seen growing 6.5-7.0 pct in Q1 minister
MANILA - The Philippine economy is expected to expand between 6.5 and 7.0 percent in the first quarter or faster, the economic planning minister said on Thursday, putting the government on track to meet its full-year target. The Southeast Asian economy is among the world’s fastest growing with gross domestic product expanding by 6.8 percent in 2016, a three-year high. Robust consumption and increased infrastructure spending, which spurred last year’s growth, continued to fuel economic activity, Ernesto Pernia told Reuters. They should also bolster the country’s defences against any economic fallout from Brexit, potential protectionist measures in the United States and divergent monetary policies around the world, Pernia said. “First quarter growth will be in the neighbourhood of 6.5-7.0 percent, maybe even more,” he said. The government has pledged to raise infrastructure spending to 5.2 percent of GDP this year from the projected 5 percent of GDP last year. Pernia expects exports to perform better this year after declining 4.4 percent in 2016, as the government anticipates increased demand from China and Russia. President Rodrigo Duterte has carried out a stunning U-turn in the Philippines’ foreign policy since assuming office last year, aggressively pursuing tighter business and defence ties with China and Russia and weaning the country off dependence on longtime ally the United States. “China is ramping up its importation of (Philippine) products and Russia said it will increase its demand for agriculture products,” Pernia said. China said on Wednesday it signed $1.74 billion worth of contracts to import Philippine products, such as fruits and lumber, during Vice Premier Wang Yang’s recent trip to Manila. Pernia said full-year growth could be in the “midpoint” of the government’s 6.5-7.5 percent forecast range, bolstering expectations the central bank may raise rates for the first time this year in more than two years to temper rising inflation. Annual inflation was 3.3 percent in February, the fastest pace in 27 months. While it remains within the central bank’s preferred range, the rate has moved closer to the top end of its 2-4 percent target. The central bank is expected to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged later on Thursday, but some economists said it would likely pull the rate-hike trigger at its next policy meeting in May. Tight supply, higher prices weigh on U.S. home sales
WASHINGTON - U.S. home resales fell more than expected in February amid a persistent shortage of houses on the market that is pushing up prices and sidelining prospective buyers. The National Association of Realtors said on Wednesday existing home sales declined 3.7 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.48 million units last month after hitting a 10-year high in January. Sales were up 5.4 percent from February 2016, underscoring the sustainability of the housing market recovery despite the supply constraints. The median house price surged 7.7 percent from a year ago to $228,400 in February. That marked the 60th consecutive month of year-on-year price gains. “There is a small supply of homes for sale and great demand for them, and that’s driving prices higher in many markets. We believe the strong appetite for homes will continue, people just need more homes to choose from,” said Gino Blefari, president at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices in Orange County, California. Economists had forecast sales decreasing 2.0 percent last month. In February, houses typically stayed on the market for 45 days, down from 59 days a year ago. Despite February’s sales drop, the housing market was on track to again contribute to economic growth in the first quarter through increases in homebuild-
ing and broker commissions. U.S. financial markets were little moved by the data as investors focused instead on potential delays to President Donald Trump’s economic agenda, including his pledge to cut taxes. British police arrest seven in probe into attack on parliament
LONDON - Police arrested seven people in the investigation into a lone-wolf attacker who killed three people and injured 40 before being shot dead by police near parliament in London, Britain’s most senior counter-terrorism officer said on Thursday. Mark Rowley said there were four dead including the attacker and 29 people still being treated in hospital, seven of whom were in a critical condition. Police had said on Wednesday that the death toll was five in the worst such attack in Britain since 2005. The attacker sped across Westminster Bridge in a car, ramming pedestrians along the way, then ran through the gates of the nearby parliament building and stabbed a policeman before he was shot dead. Authorities have described the attack as a “marauding terrorist incident” and said they were working on the assumption that it was Islamist-related. Britons have been left shocked by the fact that the attacker was able to cause such mayhem equipped with nothing more sophisticated than a hired car and a knife. Police believe they know the identity of the attacker but have not named him. Rowley said police had searched six addresses in London, Birmingham and other parts of the country in their investigation. “It is still our belief ... that this attacker acted alone and was inspired by international terrorism. At this stage we have no specific information about further threats to the public,” Rowley said. He said there was a mix of nationalities among the dead but gave no details. The victims were the policeman who was stabbed and two members of the public, a woman in her mid-40s and a man in his mid-50s. The fourth dead was the assailant. Three French high-school students aged 15 or 16,
who were on a school trip to London with fellow students from Brittany, were among the injured. French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault was expected to arrive in London to visit them at hospital, French media reported. There were also five South Koreans among the injured, South Korea’s foreign ministry said in Seoul.

Leave.EU, a group that has campaigned for immigration to be severely restrained as part of Britain’s exit from the European Union, accused mainstream politicians of facilitating acts of terror by failing to secure borders. “We are sick, tired but perhaps even more so we are angry that recent governments across Europe have enabled these attacks through grossly negligible policies that have left us vulnerable,” the group said in a statement. BATAM - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), who was visiting Batam, said he had asked to speed up completion of the Sei Gong dam in Galang, Batam. The plan was the dam with a capacity of holding 11 million cubic meters of water was to be completed by the end of 2018, but Jokowi said it could be finished in mid 2018. “I have talked with the contractor that it could be completed in mid 2018,” the president said when inspecting the project on the Galang island on Thursday. Construction of the Sei Gong which will have a production capacity of 400 liters per second will cost around Rp238 billion. Currently , construction, which started in 2016, is around 35 percent completed, he said. Public Works and Housing Minister Basuki Hadimulyo, who accompanied the president in the visit, said the Sei Gong dam is one of 49 new dams to be built by the government until 2019. “It is a an estuary dam as it is located in a river estuary,” Basuki said. KINGSTON - Reigning Commonwealth Games 400 metres hurdles champion Kaliese Spencer denied on Wednesday that she “refused or evaded a drug test” and plans to legally challenge the assertion by the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission. Spencer’s denial came less than 24 hours after Jamaican athletics officials said they were notified by the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission of rule violations by Spencer and 2011 World Championship relay bronze medallist Riker Hylton. “Ms. Spencer categorically refutes any assertion that she has refused or evaded a drug test,” Spencer’s manager, Marvin Anderson, said in a statement. “This allegation is simply false, as Ms. Spencer has always made herself available to be tested by JADCO.” According to the statement, Spencer intends to pursue all legal channels necessary to protect her name. Jamaica’s Spencer won gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014 and was also a world championship silver medallist in the 4x400m relay in Berlin in 2009. Anderson, speaking on Jamaican radio station Hitz 92fm on Tuesday, said Spencer was never notified that she had been selected for testing. Hylton on Monday also refuted the claim and said he had not been properly informed that he had been selected for testing and only found out that he had been accused of declining to provide a sample after he had left the stadium. BUENOS AIRES — Benjamin Palandella dribbles around a bigger boy who comes charging at him and shoots to the goal with shocking force for a 7-year-old player. Nearby, children jump to head a ball tethered on a rope, tip-toe over hoops and dribble around orange cones. The kids training in this concrete court in a Buenos Aires working class neighborhood play for Club Social Parque. It’s the same soccer talent factory where international stars like Diego Maradona, Carlos Tevez and Juan Roman Riquelme polished their skills as children. Spain’s “La Masia” youth academy may be the famed bedrock of Barcelona’s success and where Lionel Messi started training at 13 when he emigrated from Argentina. But Club Social Parque, a humble youth academy in Messi’s native country, has perhaps produced more world-class players than any other. At least 40 have become major international stars. During practice, many of the children wore Messi’s Barcelona jersey and dream of becoming Argentina’s next soccer great. The coach often credited for the academy’s success oversees their drills from the sideline. “At Club Parque, we work a lot on the fundamentals, the technique. We recognize talent from a young age and our eye has been sharpening with time,” said Ramon Maddoni, head scout at Parque and at the Boca Juniors club children’s division. “We’ve discovered more players than La Masia.” The 75-year-old coach likes to recite the names of the dozens of kids — more than 200 by his count — that he has coached and who went on to play with Argentina’s national team, local and Europe’s top clubs. He recalls how he promised Tevez that he’d be a world-class striker long before he became a top goal scorer for clubs in England and Italy. Or how Juan Pablo Sorin would cry when Maddoni would line him up on defense, because he wanted to score goals. Sorin later played left back for Barcelona and Paris Saint Germain, and invited Maddoni on an all-expenses paid trip to Germany to watch him play with Argentina in the 2006 World Cup. These days, he recites names of new young talent. “Benjamin is different from the group,” he said about Palandella. “He can pass with his back turned, he uses both legs. I see some of Riquelme in the way he moves the ball. I see some of ‘Carlitos’ Tevez, in how he uses his hands and leans backward... He’s different.” After the training game, Benjamin changed into a Barcelona shirt adorned with Messi’s number 10 and continued to kick the ball even after the other kids had gone home.
“I want to be like Messi and play for Barcelona,” he said. He likes how the Barcelona star “steps” on the ball, scores and shoots free kicks. Like Messi, “Benjamin is very shy, but he transforms himself on the field,” his father, Gaston Pallandela said. Former players say that the secret to Parque is Maddoni’s eye for spotting young talent. But also his insistence on practicing skill sets in reduced spaces and imperfect surfaces where kids learn how to react faster, giving them a competitive advantage when they eventually reach large professional fields. Players stay in touch with him, and often invite him to dinner when they come to Buenos Aires after playing with European clubs. “I often thought about Parque when I needed to resolve a situation on the field. I’d have these flashbacks of advice from the coach. And you incorporate all of that naturally because you’ve repeated it so many times,” said Cesar Lapaglia, a former professional player for Boca Juniors and Spain’s Tenerife, who played at Parque under Maddoni from the ages of seven to 13. Club Social Parque was founded in 1949 when two smaller clubs made up of newspaper delivery men and factory workers merged in the neighborhood of Villa del Parque. Today, about 150 children as young as 6, and from all economic levels, train together twice a week and compete on the weekends in “Baby,” a popular soccer division played in small indoor courts. Some of the academy’s best talent blossomed under agreements to transfer its young players to clubs Argentinos Juniors and Boca Juniors. The deal with Boca was brokered in the 1990s by then-team president Mauricio Macri, a millionaire businessman turned politician who was elected Argentina’s president last year. Argentina is home to some of the world’s greatest players, but also corruption. Several generations of soccer bosses, trainers and scouts run the popular, lucrative and often unregulated business of discovering and selling young promises. There are hundreds of clubs like Parque in the capital alone. For the thousands of talented youngsters like Palandella, only a small percentage will become elite players. Some will struggle along the way to overcome injuries. Others will fall to the psychological pressure at home or on the field. An economic and governance crisis at the Argentine Football Association prompted FIFA to take control from its leadership last year and help pick an emergency panel to manage its affairs. Professional players recently waged
a strike over unpaid wages that delayed the local league’s kickoff. “Unfortunately in this country, there are a lot of extreme circumstances where it seems the mark of happiness or success is all about money, and often, parents associate soccer with this,” said former professional player Lionel Gancedo, who began his career at Parque at age 5. “During this early stage of a young player, it’s critically important that they have responsible people taking care of their development.” During a recent youth league game played in the outskirts of Buenos Aires, some parents clung to a metal fence and cheered as if they were witnessing the World Cup final. A coach barked orders at their kids on the sideline. Sitting on the green turf next to him was Thiago Perugini, one of the top young players at Parque. The 12-year-old with long, curly brown hair is so talented that he has was invited that weekend to play with kids two years older than him for another club. On the field, Perugini showed some of the ball control, precise passes and vision praised by Maddoni. “The environment is very competitive,” said Thiago’s mom, Karina Estrada. “These kids have a lot pressure from all the parents screaming from the sidelines of the field. And even if they don’t have the pressure, the nerves on edge play against them.” Back home, Thiago has dozens of trophies stacked high in the shelves of his room. He recently transferred to the youth division of San Lorenzo and his parents had painted the walls in the red and blue colors of the club that is beloved by Argentina-born Pope Francis. A framed picture shows images of “Coco” dribbling and kicking next to similar images of Maradona during moments of brilliance that helped Argentina win the 1986 World Cup. “I’d like to be like Maradona,” he said. Like Maradona, Thiago is a classic playmaker. He knows that he wants to be a professional soccer player. But what would he do, if he doesn’t end up going pro? After a long silence, he shrugs his shoulders, smiles and answers: “I don’t know.” He trains three days a week with San Lorenzo and Parque, and often gets invited to play up to four tournament games over the weekend. “The day that he doesn’t want to play anymore, it all ends right here. He has to be a good person and study and he has the support of his parents,” said Thiago’s dad, Diego Perugini, a former lower division soccer player who is a coach at Parque. “But seeing him play five minutes with the national team would be awesome. Chris Wondolowski thankful for call-up to national team SAN JOSE, Calif. — Chris Wondolowski didn’t have to travel far when he got the call to join the U.S. national team ahead of two key World Cup qualifiers. The U.S. will be playing Honduras on the home field of Wondolowski’s San Jose Earthquakes on Friday night as the Americans look to bounce back from an 0-2 start in the final round of the North and Central American and Caribbean region. “To represent your country is the ultimate pinnacle, especially as a soccer player in a World Cup qualifier in your hometown,” Wondolowski said. “I couldn’t have drawn it up any better. I’m very excited. I’m very honored to be a part of such a big game. It’s not necessarily the place we want to be, but it is an exciting place for U.S. Soccer right now. We have meaningful games in meaningful places.” And Wondolowski might need to play a meaningful role with the U.S. short-handed at forward headed into the games against Honduras and then at Panama next Tuesday. Croatia PM appeals for no hooliganism at Ukraine game ZAGREB — Croatia’s prime minister appealed to soccer fans to behave during Friday’s World Cup qualifying match against Ukraine. Andrej Plenkovic urged all state institutions to make sure that the game in Zagreb passes without incidents. It is the first time Croatia fans will be allowed into a home match in this World Cup qualifying program. FIFA ordered the Maksimir Stadium closed to fans when Croatia hosted Turkey and Iceland last year as punishment for previous incidents of racism and disorder. “We must all take responsibility so that everything passes in order,” Plenkovic said Thursday. Plenkovic’s appeal comes only weeks after a masked man chased a referee with a metal bar during a local league match between Hajduk and Rijeka. Hajduk was fined over the incident and ordered to play two games in an empty stadium. There have been other incidents in the past involving Croatian fans, some as a protest against soccer federation leaders, including at the European Championship in France last June. A Euro 2016 game against the Czech Republic in Saint-Etienne was stopped for several minutes when fans threw flares on the field. But also his insistence on practicing skill sets in reduced spaces and imperfect surfaces where kids learn how to react faster, giving them a competitive advantage when they eventually reach large professional fields. Players stay in touch with him, and often invite him to dinner when they come to Buenos Aires after playing with European clubs. “I often thought about Parque when I needed to resolve a situation on the field. I’d have these flashbacks of advice from the coach. And you incorporate all of that naturally because you’ve repeated it so many times,” said Cesar Lapaglia, a former professional player for Boca Juniors and Spain’s Tenerife, who played at Parque under Maddoni from the ages of seven to 13. Club Social Parque was founded in 1949 when two smaller clubs made up of newspaper delivery men and factory workers merged in the neighborhood of Villa del Parque. Today, about 150 children as young as 6, and from all economic levels, train together twice a week and compete on the weekends in “Baby,” a popular soccer division played in small indoor courts. Some of the academy’s best talent blossomed under agreements to transfer its young players to clubs Argentinos Juniors and Boca Juniors. The deal with Boca was brokered in the 1990s by then-team president Mauricio Macri, a millionaire businessman turned politician who was elected Argentina’s president last year. Argentina is home to some of the world’s greatest players, but also corruption. Several generations of soccer bosses, trainers and scouts run the popular, lucrative and often unregulated business of discovering and selling young promises. There are hundreds of clubs like Parque in the capital alone. For the thousands of talented youngsters like Palandella, only a small percentage will become elite players. Some will struggle along the way to overcome injuries. Others will fall to the psychological pressure at home or on the field. a strike over unpaid wages that delayed the local league’s kickoff. “Unfortunately in this country, there are a lot of extreme circumstances where it seems the mark of happiness or success is all about money, and often, parents associate soccer with this,” said former professional player Lionel Gancedo, who began his career at Parque at age 5. “During this early stage of a young player, it’s critically important that they have responsible people taking care of their development.” During a recent youth league game played in the outskirts of Buenos Aires, some parents clung to a metal fence and cheered as if they were witnessing the World Cup final. A coach barked orders at their kids on the sideline. Sitting on the green turf next to him was Thiago Perugini, one of the top young players at Parque. The 12-year-old with long, curly brown hair is so talented that he has was invited that weekend to play with kids two years older than him for another club. On the field, Perugini showed some of the ball control, precise passes and vision praised by Maddoni. “The environment is very competitive,” said Thiago’s mom, Karina Estrada. “These kids have a lot pressure from all the parents screaming from the sidelines of the field. And even if they don’t have the pressure, the nerves on edge play against them.” Back home, Thiago has dozens of trophies stacked high in the shelves of his room. He recently transferred to the youth division of San Lorenzo and his parents had painted the walls in the red and blue colors of the club that is beloved by Argentina-born Pope Francis. A framed picture shows images of “Coco” dribbling and kicking next to similar images of Maradona during moments of brilliance that helped Argentina win the 1986 World Cup. “I’d like to be like Maradona,” he said. Like Maradona, Thiago is a classic playmaker. He knows that he wants to be a professional soccer player. But what would he do, if he doesn’t end up going pro? After a long silence, he shrugs his shoulders, smiles and answers: “I don’t know.” He trains three days a week with San Lorenzo and Parque, and often gets invited to play up to four tournament games over the weekend. “The day that he doesn’t want to play anymore, it all ends right here. He has to be a good person and study and he has the support of his parents,” said Thiago’s dad, Diego Perugini, a former lower division soccer player who is a coach at Parque. “But seeing him play five minutes with the national team would be awesome. Croatia PM appeals for no hooliganism at Ukraine game ZAGREB — Croatia’s prime minister appealed to soccer fans to behave during Friday’s World Cup qualifying match against Ukraine. Andrej Plenkovic urged all state institutions to make sure that the game in Zagreb passes without incidents. It is the first time Croatia fans will be allowed into a home match in this World Cup qualifying program. FIFA ordered the Maksimir Stadium closed to fans when Croatia hosted Turkey and Iceland last year as punishment for previous incidents of racism and disorder. “We must all take responsibility so that everything passes in order,” Plenkovic said Thursday. Plenkovic’s appeal comes only weeks after a masked man chased a referee with a metal bar during a local league match between Hajduk and Rijeka. Hajduk was fined over the incident and ordered to play two games in an empty stadium. There have been other incidents in the past involving Croatian fans, some as a protest against soccer federation leaders, including at the European Championship in France last June. A Euro 2016 game against the Czech Republic in Saint-Etienne was stopped for several minutes when fans threw flares on the field. KINGSTON - Reigning Commonwealth Games 400 metres hurdles champion Kaliese Spencer denied on Wednesday that she “refused or evaded a drug test” and plans to legally challenge the assertion by the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission. Spencer’s denial came less than 24 hours after Jamaican athletics officials said they were notified by the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission of rule violations by Spencer and 2011 World Championship relay bronze medallist Riker Hylton. “Ms. Spencer categorically refutes any assertion that she has refused or evaded a drug test,” Spencer’s manager, Marvin Anderson, said in a statement. “This allegation is simply false, as Ms. Spencer has always made herself available to be tested by JADCO.” According to the statement, Spencer intends to pursue all legal channels necessary to protect her name. Jamaica’s Spencer won gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014 and was also a world championship silver medallist in the 4x400m relay in Berlin in 2009. Anderson, speaking on Jamaican radio station Hitz 92fm on Tuesday, said Spencer was never notified that she had been selected for testing. Hylton on Monday also refuted the claim and said he had not been properly informed that he had been selected for testing and only found out that he had been accused of declining to provide a sample after he had left the stadium. British police arrest seven in probe into attack on parliament
LONDON - Police arrested seven people in the investigation into a lone-wolf attacker who killed three people and injured 40 before being shot dead by police near parliament in London, Britain’s most senior counter-terrorism officer said on Thursday. Mark Rowley said there were four dead including the attacker and 29 people still being treated in hospital, seven of whom were in a critical condition. Police had said on Wednesday that the death toll was five in the worst such attack in Britain since 2005. The attacker sped across Westminster Bridge in a car, ramming pedestrians along the way, then ran through the gates of the nearby parliament building and stabbed a policeman before he was shot dead. Authorities have described the attack as a “marauding terrorist incident” and said they were working on the assumption that it was Islamist-related. Britons have been left shocked by the fact that the attacker was able to cause such mayhem equipped with nothing more sophisticated than a hired car and a knife. Police believe they know the identity of the attacker but have not named him. Rowley said police had searched six addresses in London, Birmingham and other parts of the country in their investigation. “It is still our belief ... that this attacker acted alone and was inspired by international terrorism. At this stage we have no specific information about further threats to the public,” Rowley said. He said there was a mix of nationalities among the dead but gave no details. The victims were the policeman who was stabbed and two members of the public, a woman in her mid-40s and a man in his mid-50s. The fourth dead was the assailant. Three French high-school students aged 15 or 16,
who were on a school trip to London with fellow students from Brittany, were among the injured. French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault was expected to arrive in London to visit them at hospital, French media reported. There were also five South Koreans among the injured, South Korea’s foreign ministry said in Seoul.

But anti-immigration groups were quick to make links between immigration and the attack. Leave.EU, a group that has campaigned for immigration to be severely restrained as part of Britain’s exit from the European Union, accused mainstream politicians of facilitating acts of terror by failing to secure borders. “We are sick, tired but perhaps even more so we are angry that recent governments across Europe have enabled these attacks through grossly negligible policies that have left us vulnerable,” the group said in a statement. France’s Fillon says government is behind media leaks against him
PARIS - Right-wing presidential candidate Francois Fillon, hit by new damaging disclosures, accused the Socialist government on Wednesday of organising a campaign of media leaks about his financial affairs to neutralise him as a force in the election. BATAM - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), who was visiting Batam, said he had asked to speed up completion of the Sei Gong dam in Galang, Batam. The plan was the dam with a capacity of holding 11 million cubic meters of water was to be completed by the end of 2018, but Jokowi said it could be finished in mid 2018. “I have talked with the contractor that it could be completed in mid 2018,” the president said when inspecting the project on the Galang island on Thursday. Construction of the Sei Gong which will have a production capacity of 400 liters per second will cost around Rp238 billion. Currently , construction, which started in 2016, is around 35 percent completed, he said. Public Works and Housing Minister Basuki Hadimulyo, who accompanied the president in the visit, said the Sei Gong dam is one of 49 new dams to be built by the government until 2019. “It is a an estuary dam as it is located in a river estuary,” Basuki said. We will continue to do our best,” the minister said following a meeting with representatives of the Federation of All-Indonesia Labor Unions in the Cigarette, Tobacco, Food and Beverage Industries (BP RTMM-SPSI) at the Manpower Ministry here on Wednesday. Some 5.8 million Indonesians are currently employed in the cigarette and tobacco industry, consisting of 2.3 tobacco farmers, 1.5 million clove growers, 600 thousand tobacco workers and 1
million retailers. In the formal sector, 401,989 Indonesians are employed in the cigarette industry, with threequarters or 291,824 of them being employed in manual clove-blended cigarette industry which constitutes labor-intensive industry. BUSINESS Philippine economy seen growing 6.5-7.0 pct in Q1 minister
MANILA - The Philippine economy is expected to expand between 6.5 and 7.0 percent in the first quarter or faster, the economic planning minister said on Thursday, putting the government on track to meet its full-year target. The Southeast Asian economy is among the world’s fastest growing with gross domestic product expanding by 6.8 percent in 2016, a three-year high. Robust consumption and increased infrastructure spending, which spurred last year’s growth, continued to fuel economic activity, Ernesto Pernia told Reuters. They should also bolster the country’s defences against any economic fallout from Brexit, potential protectionist measures in the United States and divergent monetary policies around the world, Pernia said. “First quarter growth will be in the neighbourhood of 6.5-7.0 percent, maybe even more,” he said. The government has pledged to raise infrastructure spending to 5.2 percent of GDP this year from the projected 5 percent of GDP last year. Pernia expects exports to perform better this year after declining 4.4 percent in 2016, as the government anticipates increased demand from China and Russia. President Rodrigo Duterte has carried out a stunning U-turn in the Philippines’ foreign policy since assuming office last year, aggressively pursuing tighter business and defence ties with China and Russia and weaning the country off dependence on longtime ally the United States. “China is ramping up its importation of (Philippine) products and Russia said it will increase its demand for agriculture products,” Pernia said. China said on Wednesday it signed $1.74 billion worth of contracts to import Philippine products, such as fruits and lumber, during Vice Premier Wang Yang’s recent trip to Manila. Tight supply, higher prices weigh on U.S. home sales
WASHINGTON - U.S. home resales fell more than expected in February amid a persistent shortage of houses on the market that is pushing up prices and sidelining prospective buyers. The National Association of Realtors said on Wednesday existing home sales declined 3.7 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.48 million units last month after hitting a 10-year high in January. Sales were up 5.4 percent from February 2016, underscoring the sustainability of the housing market recovery despite the supply constraints. The median house price surged 7.7 percent from a year ago to $228,400 in February. That marked the 60th consecutive month of year-on-year price gains. “There is a small supply of homes for sale and great demand for them, and that’s driving prices higher in many markets. We believe the strong appetite for homes will continue, people just need more homes to choose from,” said Gino Blefari, president at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices in Orange County, California. Economists had forecast sales decreasing 2.0 percent last month. In February, houses typically stayed on the market for 45 days, down from 59 days a year ago. He said that at least 50 residents’ houses suffered minor damages. All houses suffered roof damages because the roof fell out. Each house suffered fallen roof. He also confirmed that three family shrines of residents were damaged. Besides, a building of SDN 4 Yehembang elementary school also suffered damages to the roof and plafond and their walls cracked. He has taken measures by providing modest assistance to the victims to repair their roof tiles that fell out and reported the incident to the government of Jembrana. Minister of tourism criticizes waste problem in Bali DENPASAR - Garbage problem having become the scourge of the Island of the Gods was sharply criticized by the Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya, more specifically the mounting piles of garbage in the Suwung landfill. Such poor spectacle is clearly visible from the aircraft that will land at Ngurah Rai Airport. This can surely give a negative impression to travelers. “Waste problems are never resolved and many a time I’ve got angry. As soon as landing, the piles of garbage is visible below,” he said amid the Development Planning Meeting (Musrenbang) for Formulation of Development Plan (RKPD) of Bali Province 2018 at Wiswasabha Utama, the office of the governor, on Tuesday (Mar. 21). Arief added that annual meeting of the IMF and World Bank to be held in Bali in October 2018 should be used to resolve the garbage problem. Similarly, the congestion problem is equally critical to waste problem. Moreover, there will be 15,000 participants from around the world that will attend
the meeting. “Economic core of Bali is tourism. We have also agreed that the main problem lies in the infrastructure and basic utilities. We need to build roads, water, electricity and internet plus resolving garbage problem,” he added. For road problem, according to Arief, Bali can send a letter to the ministry for maritime considering that Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs, Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, will become the coordinator related to the IMF and the World Bank meeting. Another problem is related to the existence of one international airport in Bali. According to him, the airport in North Bali must be soon realized because in principle the minister of transportation, minister of tourism, and the governor of Bali have agreed. “This should be immediately realized. LOS ANGELES - Spice Girl Melanie ‘Mel B’ Brown filed for divorce from her husband after nearly 10 years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. Court papers filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday show that British pop star Brown, 41, and husband Stephen Belafonte, a TV producer, have been separated since December. Brown requested joint legal and physical custody of the couple’s daughter, five-year-old Madison Brown Belafonte. Representatives for Brown did not immediately respond to Reuters for comment and efforts to reach Belafonte were
unsuccessful. Brown, best known as Scary Spice in 1990s British pop group Spice Girls, married Belafonte in June 2007. Brown has two other children from previous relationships. LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department apologized on Tuesday for briefly detaining Grammy-winning hip hop artist Wyclef Jean in handcuffs during a robbery investigation, after Jean said he was “treated like a criminal” by law enforcement officers. The sheriff’s department released a statement describing its investigation in the early hours of Monday morning into a violent robbery in West Hollywood, a trendy municipality neighboring Los Angeles, and apologized “for any inconvenience this process caused Mr. Jean.” “It is unfortunate that Mr. Jean was detained for six minutes during this investigation, as he had no involvement whatsoever in this violent crime,” the sheriff’s depart-
ment said. Representatives for Jean did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The sheriff’s department said the suspects allegedly attacked and held up a man and a woman at gunpoint and robbed them of their possessions before driving away. Jean was pulled over shortly after the incident because the vehicle he was in matched the description of the suspects’ car. The statement said Jean was placed in handcuffs because he displayed “furtive movements and demeanor,” such as walking towards the trunk of the car despite deputies asking him not to. The suspects in the robbery were later arrested. In tweets and video of the incident posted to his Instagram and
Twitter feed, Jean, the Haitian-born former Fugees singer, said he appeared to have been the victim of “another case of mistaken identity” and threatened to sue. “I was treated like a criminal until other police showed up and pointed out they had wrong person,” Jean, 47, wrote on Twitter. “I am sure no father wants his sons or daughters to see him in Handcuffs especially if he is innocent,” he added. Jean emigrated to the United States from Haiti at the age of 9 but has maintained his Haitian citizenship. Tuesday’s incident comes amid heightened sensitivity about racial issues and the U.S. justice system following a spate of shootings by police of unarmed black people. (rtr)
