‘Insurgent’ seizes top spot; ‘The Gunman’ misfires

LOS ANGELES — Sean Penn’s “The Gunman” was no match for the rebel kids of “Insurgent.” The second installment in the “Divergent” series easily topped the box office with $54 million from 3,875 theaters, according to Rentrak estimates Sunday. Penn’s geopolitical thriller stumbled with only $5 million.

While the second films in both the “Hunger Games” and the “Twilight” series boasted opening weekend gains over the first, “Insurgent’s” opening nearly matches that of its predecessor, “Divergent,” which debuted to $54.6 million just last year. Many predicted a bit of growth for this second film, which sees the return of stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, and Kate Winslet to author Veronica Roth’s dystopian world. But, both distributor Lionsgate and box office analysts see the consistency as a good thing. “We’re extremely pleased with the outcome,” said Lionsgate’s President of Domestic Distribution Richie Fay. “I think this is exactly where we thought we’d be,” he added. “We attracted a few more males this time around, and I think we’re headed in the right direction. The uptick from Friday to Saturday was considerably higher than it was for ‘Divergent.’ That, the A- CinemaScore and what’s coming into the marketplace will allow us to grow very nicely.” According to Lionsgate, 60 percent of audiences were female. for the strong repeat performance. “It’s really about driving a very fickle audience, that teen, YA — whatever you want to call them — they’re really tough to get a handle on. Their tastes change like the wind,” he said. “The key is keeping the young adult audience engaged, excited and enthusiastic.” “Insurgent” also performed well overseas, taking in $47 million from 76 markets, bringing its worldwide total to $101 million. Disney’s live-action “Cinderella,” meanwhile, fell 49 percent in Week 2 to take second place with $34.5 million. The PG-rated film has earned an impressive $122 million domestically to date. Also in its second weekend in theaters, the R-rated Liam Neeson-led action film “Run All Night,” managed a slight edge over Open Road’s “The Gunman.” Neeson’s film, a Warner

Bros. release, dropped 54 percent with its $5.1 million weekend, while Penn’s film debuted in fourth place with only $5 million. “You have a lot of R-rated competition out there right now,” noted Dergarabedian, who also added that Penn’s foray into the action genre has not garnered the best reviews. “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” one of the better performing R-rated releases in recent weeks, rounded out the top five with $4.6 million in its sixth weekend in theaters. The 20th Century Fox film has now earned over $114.6 million domestically. “Over the past couple of weeks, films driven by the female audience have done much better than films driven by the male audience. SINGAPORE - Singapore plunged into mourning and world leaders united in tribute Monday after the death of Lee Kuan Yew, the iron-fisted politician who forged a prosperous citystate out of unpromising beginnings. His son, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, issued a statement before dawn announcing the passing of his 91-year-old father at Singapore General Hospital following a long illness. “He fought for our independence, built a nation where there was none, and made us proud to be Singaporeans. We won’t see another like him,” the prime minister said in an emotional televised address. US President Barack Obama led foreign leaders in hailing Lee, who turned a small territory lacking natural resources into a world player in finance, trading and ship-

ping -- all the while with a heavy political grip that was long decried by rights campaigners. His mix of economic reform allied with political authoritarianism was of particular appeal to communist China as it opened up in the 1980s, and the ethnic-Chinese Lee’s advice was held in high esteem in Beijing. President Xi Jinping praised Lee as an “old friend of the Chinese people” and said he was “widely respected by the international community as a strategist and a statesman”. After news broke of Lee’s death, hundreds of Singaporeans, some

weeping, visited the gates of the Istana state complex to leave flowers and cards, and sign a condolence board. Some chanted “Mr Lee, Mr Lee” as a hearse carrying his body drove into the compound for a two-day private family wake, after which his coffin will be borne on a gun carriage to lie in state at Parliament House. A tearful Sharon Tan, 39, and her five-year-old son Ryan Mackay were among the first to arrive. “I brought Ryan here to share an important part of Singapore’s history to him and also to help him understand why mummy is so sad,” she said. A state funeral service will be held at the National University of Singapore on Sunday before Lee is cremated, ending seven days of

national mourning. Lee, whose health rapidly deteriorated after his wife of 63 years, Kwa Geok Choo, died in 2010, was in hospital for nearly seven weeks with severe pneumonia. Despite growing anticipation of his death, sales manager June Tay Mae Sann, 37, said “it was still very different when it happened”. Lee served as prime minister from 1959, when colonial ruler Britain granted self-rule, to 1990, leading Singapore to independence in 1965 after a brief and stormy union with Malaysia. Singapore now has one of the world’s highest per capita incomes and its residents enjoy near-universal home ownership, low crime rates and first-class infrastructure. The opposition Workers’ Party,

whose leaders were among those harried for years by Lee under his unyielding rule, joined the rest of the nation of 5.5 million people in mourning him. “His contributions to Singapore will be remembered for generations to come,” it said in a statement. BANGLI - The waste produced by residents of Bangli on Pengerupukan, -the day before Nyepi, Friday (Mar. 20), was considerably more than on normal days, amounting to about 180 cubic meters, compared to the average of about 125 cubic meters. The added trash meant that janitors were burdened with overtime lasting well into the night, said Head of Bangli Urban Planning Agency, Ida Ayu Yudi Sutha on Sunday (Mar. 22). “On Pengrupukan Nyepi, the amount of waste produced increased by about 50 cubic meters, mostly as a result of the ogoh-ogoh parade” explained said Sutha, who went on to explain that 70 percent of the waste was inorganic mostly refuse from the papier macho demons, with only 30 percent being organic waste that is attributed to household refuse produced in preparation for Nyepi. The increase in waste happened on Nyepi, she said, which means that many more hours are spent cleaning and more trucks are need to transport the increased refuse. “The trucks have an added 2 cubic meters or 4 extra trucks and janitors work up to 6 hours over-time,” she said. To speed up the transportation of the waste, Sutha said that at least 80 janitors are deployed, most of whom are borrowed from the Bangli Urban Planning Agency. The extra waste results from both the ogoh-ogoh themselves as well as general refuse left behind by those attending the parade. Janitors focus their attention on cleaning up the streets where the ogoh ogoh have passed, they then move onto public spaces such as fields and such. “More janitorial officers are focused on the points of ogoh-ogoh parade,” she explained. Sutha said the number of janitors and trucks insufficient to deal with the huge amount of waste (up to 180 cubic meters), so to overcome this problem, they have the trucks working more quickly than usual. Also, “To speed up the transport and sorting of the waste, we also cooperate with scavengers who help us to gather plastic waste that can be brought to junk banks,” she concluded. (kmb45)

DENPASAR - School authorities are now making preparation to draft the passing grade to determine students’ graduation. They are expected to be cautious and do not rashly determine the passing grade. They may not set the passing grade too low so as the students can reach graduation of 100 percent or even on the contrary, may not be too high. “We have conveyed to principal colleagues not to rashly determine the passing grade,” said the Head of Karangasem Education Agency, Gede Ariyasa. He said that Karangasem Education Agency already summoned the principals of junior, senior high and vocational schools in Karangasem to follow up the issuance of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) of national exam and Regulation of the Minister of Education No.5/2015 concerning the Criteria of Student Passing Grade, Implementation of National Exam and School Exam or Education of Equality for junior high, senior high and vocational school or respective equivalence. Principals were emphasized to examine the national exam and regulation of the Minister of Education and Culture. Then, each school was asked to agree together how much the passing grade is and the scoring between school exam and the average score of report cards. He added that to determine the passing grade, schools must examine the ability of students at the school concerned. Do not set the passing grade too high, while the ability of students is below the passing grade. Actually it will hurt the students. Similarly, the passing grade must not be set too low, below the average of the student’s ability in general. “If a passing grade is too low, it will make the quality of our education not well-guaranteed. Finally, all the students can pass but are inappropriate with their actual ability,” he said. Ariyasa admitted that his side will not question if the passing grade between one school and another is different. Indeed the ability of schools and students at different location is different. Moreover, the existing rule allows the differences in passing grade. Data on the passing grade and scoring at each school will be duly deposited to Karangasem Education Agency. Separately, a member of Commis-

sion IV of the Bali House, Nyoman Parta, in charge of education, also asked the schools not to arbitrarily determine the passing grade for students’ graduation. The passing grade must not be designed to enable the graduation of 100 percent without considering the actual ability of students. “Do not let all the schools make a low passing grade so that they can solely pass their students 100 percent. It is dangerous and a setback for the education in Bali,” said Parta doubling as Chairman of the PDI-P Faction in the Bali House. Parta added that determination of the passing grade is given to schools and the graduation of students is determined by the Teacher Council. On one side, this can become a step forward. Its positive side, public schools in urban and rural areas can make different passing grade according to their own ability. Likewise, public schools and private schools in rural areas are equally able to make the passing grade corresponding to their school conditions. “However, it has the disadvantages where schools can set the passing grade too low for fear that their students will not pass 100 percent,” he added. Another weakness, added the PDI-P politician from Gianyar, if the passing grade is different among the schools, the government will have difficulty in making an evaluation on the quality of education in the region. Besides, the government will have difficulty to make a mapping on the teacher quality as well as the quality and quantity of infrastructure at a school. “This may happen because the weakness of a school will be covered up by the 100 percent graduation,” said Parta. As reported previously (Mar. 18), schools are given the authority and flexibility in determining the graduation of students based on passing grade (minimum score criteria) determined by the schools from the combination of school test scores and score of report cards whose composition is determined by the schools. Graduation of students is determined by the score of the school which is a combination of school test scores and the average score of the report card with the composition of 30 percent to 50 percent of school test scores and 50 percent to 70 percent of the average score of report cards. Unique jars attract French travelers Behind the widespread development of hotel and restaurant business in Bali, in fact, the jar business also begins to draw the interests of foreign tourists. Even, the jar commonly just functioning to hold drinking water, rice and ritual paraphernalia becomes an attractive ornament for foreign tourists that will be used for decorations such as flower pots, flower vases or just put as indoor or outdoor decoration. A jar showroom entrepreneur of Duuran Gemilang, I Wayan Wirthawan, became interested in developing jar business in Bali. According to him, the business pioneered in 2004 with family was considered rare because it could still be counted on fingers. “In the first year, we only the sold ready-to-use jars and the buyers were still around local community. Then, in harmony with the passage of time, we started our self-production and did promotion not only locally but also abroad,” he said friendly. The first showroom, said Wirthawan, was located on Jalan Raya Kerobokan, Kuta. As a result, the business he pioneered started to grow and began to draw the interests of foreign tourists. Since then, he opened a branch at Lukluk area. “Since there are foreign tourists so we need to increase the production and more spacious location.

Currently, 80 percent of the consumers are French travelers,” said the businessman from Singaraja. Aside from French tourists, continued Wirthawan, his jars were also ordered by many Australian travelers. Even lately, Indian travelers were also getting interested. “In Bali, our jars were usually ordered by hotels, villas, restaurants, offices and the expatriate community. So other than using export system, consumers usually come in person to our showroom,” he explained. Jars belonging to Wirthawan are unique, ranging from the material processing to painting and they are entirely done manually. However, the products yielded are no less good, even have better quality and the result is slicker. “The process of making jars here is almost the same as making tiles. However, it is made directly by skilled hands and wooden craft tools,” he explained. In the first phase, said Wirthawan, was the pulping of clay. “Clay is pulping with enough water and then mixed with the processed white sand especially earmarked for jars. After that, it is shaped in accordance with the order and dried under the sun. Then, burning is made approximately for 5 hours. Ultimately, it is resumed with the coloring process like into yellow, black, brown, blue and green or according to taste,”

Currently, with the help of 12 employees, Duuran Gemilang can produce jars up to hundreds of pieces every month with varied sizes and about 50 motifs such as floral, leaf, animal and much more. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Neanderthals shape up as globe’s first jewellers ZAGREB - The widely-held vision of Neanderthals as brutes may need a stark rethink after research found they crafted the world’s earliest jewellery from eagle talons 130,000 years ago, long before modern humans appeared in Europe. “While reviewing eight, whitetailed eagle talons and an associated phalanx, on the latter I noticed numerous cut marks and a revelation just struck me -- they were made by a human hand,” Davorka Radovcic, a curator at Croatia’s Natural History Museum, told AFP. The revelation came in late 2013 while reviewing the Krapina Neanderthal collection she had just taken over, items from a site once inhabited by the extinct people in what is modern-day Croatia. “I knew immediately what might be the implication of that finding,” said the anthropologist, carefully holding one of the talons that are kept in a small box. An international study began with the research published earlier this month by the PLOS peer-reviewed international online scien-

tific publication. The Krapina site, some 50 kilometres (31 miles) north of Zagreb, has yielded the world’s richest collection of Neanderthal fossils. The site containing the remains of some 80 individuals, and including the talons, was discovered in 1899 by Croatian palaeontologist Dragutin Gorjanovic-Kramberger. But it took 115 years to establish that the talons and phalanx at the Zagreb museum were jewellery, and therefore used for a symbolic purpose. “I simply had a fresh eye,” Radovcic said modestly of her find that for decades had escaped the numerous scientists visiting to study the rich collection. She initiated the research conducted along with two Croatian colleagues -- Ankica Oros Srsen

and Jakov Radovcic -- as well US anthropology professor David Frayer from the University of Kansas. The four scientists for months carefully reviewed the specimens that had cut marks, polished facets and abrasions suggesting they had been mounted into jewellery. They could not determine their symbolic value for Neanderthals or how they wore them, as a necklace or a bracelet. But there is evidence they collected the remains of eagles, as in the Krapina talon assemblage they identified at least three individual birds. “This is, at least for the time being, the world’s earliest jewellery,” Radovcic said. Up until now early jewellery was linked to anatomically modern humans -- estimated to be up to

110,000 years old -- and consisting of shell beads found at prehistoric sites in Israel. The researchers also say the Krapina jewellery indicates that contrary to long-held beliefs, Neanderthals possessed the capacity for complex cognitive thinking. “This is an example of abstract thinking. It proves that Neanderthals possessed a symbolic culture some 80,000 years before the appearance of more modern human forms in Europe,” Radovcic emphasised. Eagles, with a wingspan of more than two meters (seven feet), were among the most impressive flying predators in the Neanderthal environment, and the mighty birds apparently had special value. “I believe they were admiring eagles .... This jewellery is a message. We don’t know what it means, but perhaps they wanted to give themselves the characteristics of an eagle,” the young woman said.

Others believe they were outsmarted by the more sophisticated Homo sapiens who moved into Neanderthal territory from what is now Africa. British DNA gives window into ancient past, Vikings and all NEW YORK — Genetic samples collected from across the United Kingdom are shedding light on the ancient past, including Viking invasions and a mystery about the arrival of the Anglo-Saxons, researchers report. The DNA also suggests that, genetically speaking, people in Wales are the closest matches to early settlers of Britain after the last ice age, people who began showing up some 10,000 to 11,000 years ago. That’s because the Welsh genetic material has been the least affected by later migrations, said Peter Donnelly of Oxford University, a key author of the research. The work is presented in a paper released Wednesday by the journal Nature. The researchers studied DNA samples from 2,039 white residents of Britain and Northern Ireland, chosen for their family roots in rural areas. The DNA they inherited from their grandparents reflects the genetic landscape of those areas in the late 1880s, researchers said. To identify signs of ancient immigrations, the researchers consulted DNA samples taken from continental Europeans. Analysis showed that Danish Vikings, who occupied and controlled a large part of England after invading in the year 865, have left no clear genetic heritage today. That suggests they didn’t settle in large numbers, Donnelly said in an email. The study also weighed in on the question of what happened after Anglo-Saxons migrated into Britain from Europe, which began in the fifth century. After they showed up, their language, cereal crops and pottery styles replaced those of the existing British population. So was the British population wiped out or elbowed aside? Five teenagers arrested by pecalang

For wandering in rice fields on Nyepi SEMARAPURA - Celebrations of Nyepi on Satruday (Mar 21), in the region of Klungkung generally took place smoothly and safely. However, the peacefulness of the day was colored by delinquency that took place at Sangkanbuana customary village, Klungkung. Five teenagers living at BTN Penasan, Banjarangkan, were arrested by the pecalang or customary guards of Sangkabuana because they were caught wandering in the rice fields of Subak Jro Kuta on the day of Nyepi. As result, the five teenagers were arrested by the pecalang and brought to the village hall of Sangkanbuana. According to information obtained in the field, the five teenagers arrested by the pecalang consisted of college students as well as junior and high school students named; Gde Adi Putra, 19, Dewa Gde Rai, 19, Putu Gde Julian Yuan Primary, 16, Sang Kadek Widya Jati, 18, and Jodi Sura Semadi, 15. The five teenagers that live at BTN Penasan were arrested by the pecalang of Banjarangkan around 3:30 p.m.The arrest of the five teenagers occurred after the hamlet chief of Sangkanbuana, Nengah Sukana, along with a few pecalang guards thought they saw some people picking flowers in a nearby rice paddy. As they got closer to the rice field, they clearly saw five suspicious people strolling along the embankment of the Subak Jro Kuta paddy field. Not knowing who these suspicious people were, the pecalang of Sangkabuana called out to them. Not only did they not answer but they proceeded to attempt to escape into the middle of the rice field. The pecalang guards then chased down the five teenagers, some of whom fell down as they tried to run away. The five youths were finally apprehended and brought to the village hall of Sangkanbuana for questioning.

WASHINGTON - The United States will struggle to follow through on threats to impose deeper sanctions on the Russian energy sector, as European fears over collateral economic damage leave President Barack Obama’s administration with diminished options. Energy is the economic lifeblood of Russia, which vies with the United States and Saudi Arabia to be the world’s top oil producer, and the sector is the main target of Western sanctions over Moscow’s role in the conflict in Ukraine. But current sanctions have already hit the easiest targets in Russia’s high-tech exploration projects in the Arctic, Siberian shale, and deep-sea. That leaves the United States with less palatable options, such as trying to target the country’s oil exports, as it has done with Iran. Even though global oil prices have dropped by roughly half since last year, the United States’ European allies remain skittish over any damaging repercussions on energy supplies. Russia could respond by squeezing the gas exports on which Europe relies heavily. “If you start playing around with oil prices, Russia is going to play around with gas, and there’s no way Europe is going to go along with it,” said Carlos Pascual, who until last August was the top energy diplomat at the U.S. State Department. Dozens detained in Turkey over alleged cheating scandal

ANKARA — Turkey’s state-run news agency says police have detained dozens of people as part of an investigation into alleged fraud and cheating in a national exam in 2010 for prospective civil servants. The Anadolu Agency says more than 60 suspects were detained in Ankara and 13 other cities on Monday. It said police had arrest warrants for a total of 82 people. The investigation stems from

allegations of cheating in the Public Personnel Selection Examination in which a surprisingly large number of candidates scored top marks. The government has suggested that a movement led by U.S.based Muslim cleric may have carried out fraud in a bid to place followers into key public sector positions. Uganda shuts down 5 madrassas over training extremists

KAMPALA — Five madrassas in Uganda have been shut down over allegations they are training students to become extremists, a Ugandan police official said Monday. A Muslim leader denied the allegations. The Islamic schools targeted for closure have been training children to become fighters in a rebel group opposed to Uganda’s government, Patrick Onyango, a spokesman for police in the Ugandan capital of Kampala, told The Associated Press. “They are brainwashing the children, training them to become recruits in a rebel group,” he said. “The plan is that when they reach the right age they will be taken to become rebels.” He said three of the schools ordered shut are located in Uganda’s central region while two of them are in the east. Uganda’s Daily Monitor newspaper reported Monday that a senior Ugandan Muslim leader, Kassim Nakibinge, had criticized the police’s actions, saying Islamic schools are being unfairly targeted by the authorities. He reportedly accused the police of

“hiding behind security to close our (madrassas).” Local police link the madrassas to the Allied Democratic Forces, a Congo-based armed group whose fugitive Ugandan leader is wanted by Interpol over terror allegations. Jamil Mukulu, who is widely believed to be hiding in eastern Congo, has also been sanctioned by the U.S. over his alleged role in violence there. Ugandan authorities have been warning of the growing threat of home-grown Islamic extremism that stems in part from Uganda’s military involvement in Somalia, where Ugandan forces are part of an African Union force fighting al-Shabab extremists. At least five Ugandans are currently on trial for their alleged roles in the July 2010 bombings in Kampala that killed more than 70 people who were watching the 2010 soccer World Cup final on TV. Sidetapa, an old and unique Bali’s village by Nyoman Suwela SINGARAJA - Sidetapa is a village, located in the hilly area of North Bali and is acknowledged as one among several old and unique Bali’s villages of North Bali, namely the village of Cempaga, Tigawasa, Pedawa, Julah and Sembiran. All of these villages are believed of having different characteristic such as its tradition, dialect and home lay-out even though that all of them are Hindu devotees. Sidetapa derives its name from two words “sida” and “tapa”. Sida literally in English means “wounded” and tapa means “meditation”. How this village got its name related to these two words, as told by the prominent people in the village that it has a long story and has become a legend and the people of the village still adhere until recently. The legend has it that ancestors of the people many centuries ago were living in Java and after the advent of Islam then it advanced widely and most Javanese Hindu people converted into Muslim, a few refused to covert and they fled to Bali and eventually they settled down in the what is now the site of Besakih Mother Temple. It was told that three families out of them went to the north and they dwelt in an area on the eastern part of the current village of Sidetapa and latter on they were followed by the rest of families and settled on the southern part. What happened then, the first families coming to this area was scared by a colony of ants and they decided to

move to assemble with other families which had become the centre of a new settlement or village which was called “ Gunung Sari Munggah Tapa” literally in English is “Flower Mountain Climbing to Meditation”. The legend further has it that when the people were building a shrine of which all materials of the structure mostly consisted of bamboo and they did it in the spirit of “togetherness” what is now called “gotong royong”, everyone was taking part in the process of doing something without pay. A century ago, the village was so isolated and it now has changed due to the development and it now is also facing of challenges of modernization and globalization. The village is currently easily accessible by car. The road has been paved either directly from Singaraja or Denpasar. From tourism point of view, the village of Sidetapa, actually has a lot to offer and it can possibly be a tourist destination in Bali even in the

world. The uniqueness of the village is an asset owned by the village can be promoted to be a tourist attraction and if the promotion and tourism development in the village would be conducted whether by governments either central, province, regency, local or even by investor must be carefully designed and conducted in such a way without sacrificing the interest of the people in the village. What is going to happen in the future of this unique and interesting village will entirely in the hand of the people of the village. Many villagers there are now more educated and so they can donate their knowledge and experiences for the benefit of the whole people of Sidetapa. We do hope that the future of the village would be better. Time will tell the truth. We keep our fingers crossed for the better future of the village of Sidetapa.

Tunisian prime minister fires security chiefs after attack TUNIS, Tunisia — Tunisia’s prime minister has fired five leading security officials after three gunmen attacked a renowned Tunis museum, killing 21 in the deadliest attack on tourists in Tunisia in 13 years, the government said Monday. The ousted officials include the director of Tunisia’s tourist police and the police chief for the neighborhood around the National Bardo Museum, government spokesman Mufdi Mseddi told The Associated Press. The decision was made after the prime minister visited the neighborhood of the attack and noted security problems, the spokesman said. The gunmen opened fire on tourists getting out of buses and then entered the museum, apparently unimpeded, and fired on more tourists inside. Two gunmen were killed in a shootout with police. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for attacking the museum — a trove of Roman mosaics and Tunisia’s leading historical museum. Police identified the two dead attackers as Tunisians in their 20s who had trained in Libya. Several well-armed groups in neighboring and chaotic Libya have pledged allegiance to IS. The 11 children, four women and one man, detained in the Turkish border town of Gaziantep, are the latest example of Indonesians heading to battlegrounds in the Middle East. Fears have been growing about the influence of IS in Indonesia, which is the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation and has long struggled with Islamic militancy. Hundreds of Indonesians are feared to have joined the jihadists. In a series of raids in and around Jakarta at the weekend, elite antiterror police rounded up the five men, who are suspected of helping the 16 people who were recently caught. The men are accused of involve-

ment in “coaching, guidance, and recruitment of sympathisers of IS to depart to Iraq and Syria... and the collection and distribution of funds for the activities of IS volunteers in Indonesia,” said national police spokesman Rikwanto, who goes by one name, late Sunday. Four were charged specifically with helping arrange documents for the group to depart for Turkey, as well as previously helping another 21 Indonesians who went to join IS. One of the suspects faced a separate charge of urging people to join IS on his website, as well as creating and uploading a video online of children being trained by the jihadists. Police did not name any of the

suspects. They also confiscated items including nine mobile phones, eight million rupiah ($600) and $5,300 in US dollars. The 16 recently arrested are still in detention in Turkey. Jakarta has already banned support for IS, which controls vast swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria, although experts have called on authorities to take further steps to stop the flow of fighters. Indonesia has waged a crackdown on Islamic militant groups for more than a decade following attacks on Western targets, including the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people. Cabinet Secretary Andi Widjajanto in a press release on Monday from Tokyo, Japan, stated that the president will attend the funeral of former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew after his visit to Malaysia on March 29, 2015. “On March 29, President Joko Widodo will go to Singapore to attend the state funeral,” he remarked. President Joko Widodo stated that the government and the people of Indonesia expressed their deepest sympathies over the death of Singaporean founding father Lee Kuan Yew. “Lee Kuan Yew, known as the founding father of modern Singapore, was a close friend of Indonesia,” the president said.

He noted that as a leader, Lee is also known as one of the influential political figures in Asia. “Under his leadership, Singapore has transformed into a major economic hub in Asia and is at par with other developed countries,” he emphasized. The president said the government and the people of Indonesia prayed for the bereaved family and the people of Singapore to give them strength and fortitude in the face of grief over the death of Lee. “The government and people of Indonesia believe that the people of Singapore can pass through this difficult time,” he noted. Earlier, Lee Kuan Yew had been hospitalized for several weeks as he was suffering from pneumonia and was on life support before he passed away in the early hours of Monday morning. (ant)

JAKARTA - A survey showed that Megawati Soekarnoputri is no longer favored by the public to lead the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan). “The public acknowledged Megawati’s success in leading PDI Perjuangan but the majority of them no longer want her to lead the party,” Haryadi, a lecturer at the state University of Airlangga in Surabaya, said quoting a survey held ahead of the party congress in April. The party would next month hold a national congress, which is expected to confirm that Megawati would remain at the helm of the party a position already unanimously agreed earlier in a party meeting. The daughter of the country’s founding father President Soekarno, had been the chairperson of the party since it was formed after the fall of the dictatorial government of President Suharto. Haryadi said that what the public want might not be the same as what the cadres of the party want. “This shows a disconnection of interest between the public and the cadres and the sympathizers of PDI Perjuangan. Most of the public have quasi information from the mass

media,” he said. Therefore, it is natural that the majority of the public have their own perception of parties based on the mass media information, he said. Meanwhile cadres and sympathizers of PDI Perjuangan have experience and authentic knowledge about the party dynamics. Ducati’s 2015 MotoGP bike is “stronger and more competitive” than the machines with which Casey Stoner won 23 grands prix and a championship between 2007 and ‘10, reckons Andrea Dovizioso. Although Ducati’s win-less streak now stretches back to Stoner’s 2010 Australian GP triumph, the restructured team topped the final pre-season test in Qatar last week with Dovizioso and team-mate Andrea Iannone. Asked by Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport how the revitalised Ducati compared to Stoner’s era, Dovizioso replied: “I believe nowadays we are stronger and more competitive. “Back then Casey would dominate, but it was mostly down to himself making the difference, as in fact the second Ducati was nowhere near. That means the bike wasn’t so competitive. “Now, instead, the GP15 is competitive, it’s basically normal and it works.
