Princess Diana’s dresses go on display in London, 20 years after her death
LONDON - Gowns worn by Princess Diana for everything from meeting diplomats to dancing with movie stars feature in an exhibition celebrating the fashion of one of Britain’s favourite royals, which opens in London this week. The collection of 25 dresses will be displayed from Friday for the rest of the year in Kensington Palace, where she lived for over 15 years. The exhibition coincides with the 20th anniversary of her death. It features an ink-blue velvet gown worn by Diana when she danced with actor John Travolta at
the White House in 1985, as well as her “Elvis” dress - high-collared and encrusted with pearls. The collection also shows Diana’s “understanding of how to deploy fashion as a diplomatic tool,” organisers said, including one dress that incorporates the national bird of Saudia Arabia, the falcon.
“Our exhibition explores the story of a young woman who had to quickly learn the rules of royal and diplomatic dressing, who in the process put the spotlight on the British fashion industry and designers,” said Eleri Lynn, curator of “Diana: Her Fashion Story”. Diana, mother to Princes William and Harry, was married to heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles between 1981 and 1996 when the couple divorced. She died in a car crash in Paris in 1997. (rtr)

JAKARTA — A report on inequality in Indonesia says its four richest men now have more wealth than 100 million of the country’s poorest people.
The report released Thursday by Oxfam said Indonesia, with a population of more than 250 million, has the sixth-worst inequality in the world. Within Asia, only Thailand is more unequal. It blames “market fundamentalism” that has allowed the richest to capture most of the benefits of nearly two decades of strong economic growth, concentration of land ownership and pervasive gender inequality. The INVESTMENT RETURNS on the wealth of just one of the four richest, which according to the Forbes rich list include cigarette tycoons Budi Hartono, Michael Hartono and Susilo Wonowidjojo, would eliminate extreme poverty in a year. The report said extreme poverty
of less than $1.90 a day in income has declined sharply since 2000 but 93 million Indonesians still live on less than $3.10, which is defined by the World Bank as the moderate poverty line. Oxfam said social instability could increase if the government doesn’t tackle the gap between rich and poor. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has said that reducing inequality is a top priority for his government. A 2015 World Bank survey showed high levels of public concern about the wealth gap. The report said Indonesia’s tax collection is the second-lowest in Southeast Asia and the tax system is “failing to play its necessary role in redistributing wealth.”
To increase the tax take, so low spending on public services such as education and health can be increased, Indonesia needs a higher tax rate on the top incomes, higher inheritance tax and a new wealth tax, it said. Stench fluid directly discharged into river
Water of lake overflows every nearing festival at Dalem temple

WATER of Lake Batur has been overflowing back since three weeks ago. As a result, the lake water submerges the paving block pathway so that the road access at the lakeside of Terunyan including people’s house is submerged in lake water.
A villager of Terunyan, I Nengah Guantara, said on Tuesday (Feb. 22) that water of Lake Batur overflowed about three weeks ago. When it rained, the lake water has begun to rise. However, the flood just happens this time to close road access at lakeside and overflows into people’s settlement of Terunyan. He stated that similar incident also occurred about five years ago and was even more severe than the current condition. At that time, people’s house was submerged in water with the height of adult waist. As a result, people could no longer occupy their house because of being submerged in the lake water. Ultimately all people had to be evacuated to higher and more secure location while waiting for the lake water to recede. “Every year ahead of the temple festival or piodalan at Dalem Temple, the water of Lake Batur always rises. Festival at this temple will be held next March. So, the overflowing lake water is a regular incident every year. And this year it also re-submerges the home of Terunyan villagers,” he said. He said there are many factors causing the lake
water to overflow back such as the very high rain intensity as well as the silting of lake bed due to landslide materials carried by the flows into the lake. So, when it rains the lake water will be likely to rise. According to him, local people are accustomed to facing the overflowing lake water incident like this, so that it no longer makes them worried. “Now, the lake water has reached home’s plain. The water level reaches half a meter from bed. Nevertheless, people still sleep there because they have no other house. Since their bed is in higher position, the lake water does not reach theirs. In essence, local residents are still quiet because they are accustomed to facing something like this,” he said. He did not know for sure how long the lake water will continue to soak people’s houses as the rainfall remains high. “Rain is estimated to take place until the end of February. However, it stays to rain. If the rain continues the lake water will rise. Then, it will usually subside in hot season,” he explained. Another resident, I Wayan Bona, admitted that actually much lake water has been sucked by people to flush their farmland. Though having been sucked, the lake water remains high. “Besides, the lake water is also sucked at Songan and brought to behind the hill, namely Alengkong hamlet for farming. Nevertheless, the lake water is still high,” added Wayan Bona. (nan)
MANGUPURA - White liquid alleged to be scented waste is flowing from drainage channel to the flow of Mati River. It could be seen in the flow of Mati River around the Gelora Samudera Stadium, Kuta, on Wednesday (Feb. 22). A local resident, Made Surya, passing around the location claimed that the liquid waste is alleged to have exuded a very pungent odor. This condition is surely very disturbing people passing in the area. Surya requested the relevant agency to check and take action. “Hopefully, relevant agencies could take action as it exudes scents,” he said. When confirmed related to the waste, the Head of Badung Environment and Sanitation Agency (DLHK), Putu Eka Merthawan, promised to assign a team to the location next week. The waste problem, according to him, would get serious attention from the DLHK. As is known, the DLHK is currently focusing on the waste problem as well as on sanitation. “Related to sanitation issue, Badung has been relatively clean. Then, we will continuously monitor the waste and this has become our priority. Besides, we also pay attention to the unmonitored waste of hotel, restaurant, businesses and the public,” he said. For waste issue, his agency has begun to prepare an adequately
tight standard operating procedure (SOP). As planned, this breakthrough will be realized in March. “We have prepared the SOP. Hopefully, it could be ready in March,” he said. Following up on this, environmental issues will refer to the Law No.32/2009 on the environment. With the enforcement of the law, the offenders could be subject to sanctions maximally IDR 5 billion and the revocation of their environmental permit. “We will absolutely guard this case. The sanction is very severe, namely three monthimprisonment with a fine of IDR 5 billion plus revocation of environmental permit. When environmental permit is revoked, automatically the principle permit, business permit and building permit will also terminate,” he explained. To implement the actions, surely there are some stages and will not take severe measure against the violation arbitrarily. His agency will also cooperate with prosecutor and police authority in this case. The agency will implement environmental management system as applied in Batam. It becomes the benchmark for handling environmental monitoring system in Batam, and becomes the best in Indonesia. “This t year, we will provide training first. Gucci’s magic garden kick off Milan Fashion week
MILAN - The curtain went up on Milan’s fashion week on Wednesday with Gucci’s enchanted garden inspired looks and Fay’s 1990s rock chick styles paraded for the womenswear autumn and winter 2017/2018 season. After New York and London, the Italian capital of fashion will be the setting for six days of runway shows, exhibitions, parties and events as the fashion elite, designers, bloggers and media flock to the city. Gucci, the biggest brand of French luxury giant Kering , kicked off the extravaganza showcasing clothes with flowers, insects, animals and symbols, with
models walking on an elevated glass runway surrounding a silver pyramid. Outfits by Alessandro Michele, creative director since January 2015, were inspired by an “alchemist’s garden, a magical place ... where apparent contradictions live together”, the style note said. The first model wore a long white pleated skirt matched with a long white and black cardigan and a red top with a big pearl necklace, in a classical look. But the conservative style was soon broken as she was followed by girls covering themselves with wide parasols, carrying arrows, wearing glitter leggings, long
ruffled and flowered dresses, models with their heads covered in balaclavas, men in shorts and embroidered capes as well as models looking like farmers and maids. Michele, who has been able to relaunch the brand giving it a new strong identity and a vintage, geeky yet chic look, dwells on the “complexity of existence and on its ambivalence and dualisms”, the note added. Just across the street, models for Fay, part of Italian luxury group Tod’s, wore masculine looks, inspired by the fashion of the 1990s. Looks were mainly made from tartans, Prince of Wales check

Bukti Beach revetment collapses
Air Sanih pool threatened by inflow of seawater
SINGARAJA - The coastal revetment in Bukti village, Kubutambahan, collapsed after being eroded by large waves during the harsh rainy season. Since the collapse of the revetment, the Air Sanih public bathing pool has become threatened by pounded ocean waves located as it is right near the beach. In order to avoid disruption to tourism activities, the pool must be repaired immediately. The Bukti Beach revetment collapsed along some 5-10 meters and the river stones that were installed to lessen the impact of ocean waves have broken off. Inevitably, the concrete revetment that rigidly stretching from east to west now seems to be breaking apart near the pool. In fact when there are large waves, seawater enters the bathing pool. Naturally this is disruptive to tourists visiting East Buleleng who wish to swim in Air Sanih pool. After the revetment broke, the surroudings started to look quite chaotic. Although this in itself is not necessarily a problem, salt water entering the pool, certainly is. The only way to prevent a disruption to tourism activities here is to
repair the damaged breakwater. Head of the Buleleng Tourism Office, Nyoman Sutrisna, when contacted on Tuesday (Feb. 21) said that the damage to the revetment to the north of the swimming pool has been reported to the regional disaster mitigation agency (BPBD) of Buleleng. He added that he hopes that it can be dealt with immediately si that the damage does not worsen and that the area around the Air Sanih tourist attraction will not remain chaotic for long. “Overall, the incident has not disrupt the infrastructure of the tourist attraction, but the supporting infrastructure like the revetment to the north of the pool has collapsed.
We have reported this to the BPBD and are confident that the damage will be addressed shortly” he said. Sutrisna admitted that the environment around the tourist attraction has been disturbed but added that there is no inflow of seawater into the pool unless there are extremely large waves at sea. “Currently, the situation is back to normal, normal waves will not splash into the pool because the pool wall remains intact. The collapsed revetment has caused a
slight disturbance to the environment around the tourist attraction”, he explained. However, he also added that since recent bout of extremely heavy rains have cause floods and landslides, the tourism agency has sent letters out to the management of tourist attractions throughout North Bali, reminding them to pay close attention to weather conditions and to do their best to prevent any visitors from having a bad experience.
If the weather is not conducive to safety, toursim managers are advised to temporarily close down their operations. “Our letters of appeal have been received. Even though the weather is back to normal, we suggest that tourism managers remain vigilant. If the weather changes for the worse, they should not force themselves to operate as normal and should think carefully about the safety of visiting travellers”, added Sutrisna. (kmb38)

Waves back to normal, marine tourism still lacks visitors SINGARAJA - Waves along the coast of Buleleng in areas like Lovina retruned to normal a week ago after reaching heights of some 2 meters previously. However, marine tourists are still scarce causing tourism entrepreneurs in the area to become frustrated. As observed on Tuesday (Feb. 21), the sea had returned to normal and fishing boats that had been brought inland have been placed back along the shore. Catur Bhakti Karya Segara Kalibukbuk fishermen group leader, Putu Budista, revealed that the ocean’s waves calmed down a week ago so marine tourism activities can resume as normal. “It is now possible to go dolphin watching. The waves are back to normal”, he explained. He added however that both foreign and domestic tourists remain scarce. This is perhaps due in part to the limited time of the holiday season. Tourism operators are also
reluctanctly accepting these conditions. “Now the waves are back to normal but there are very few visitors” , he said. When contacted separately, Head of the Buleleng Tourism Office, I Nyoman Sutrisna, confirmed that there had been a drop in the number of tourists to the region – particularly tourist interested in marine activities as many still worry about possible tidal waves. “Security factor
are at play. Now the waves are back to normal, but there is still the potential for higher waves to return”, he said. Sutrisna predicted that there will be an increase in the number of tourists visiting the area in March and over the holidays “There is always a high season and a low season for foreign travellers, normally there are crowds of visitors in March, July and August”, he said. Cuba says it foiled plot to destabilize country, slams dissidents and OAS
HAVANA - Communist-ruled Cuba on Wednesday said it had foiled a serious plot aiming to destabilize the country by preventing the chief of the Organization of American States traveling to the island to attend an award ceremony organized by dissidents. The opposition group, which the government called “anti-Cuban and illegal,” had invited OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro to Havana to honor him for shining a light on violations of human rights in the Americas.

AMLAPURA - The government of Karangasem hopes the Tanah Ampo cruise ship can soon be functioned by persistent lobbying the budget to central government. But lately, continuation of the cruise pier construction is increasingly uncertain. Central government had been providing budget but so far there are no indications to disburse it. The disconcerting condition was recognized by the Head of the Karangasem Transportation Agency, I.B. Putu Swastika. His agency had time to check the budget plan to the ministry of transportation but the budget item is till marked with asterisk. “I do not understand what the asterisk means,” he said on Wednesday (Feb. 22). Continuation program of the project commencing under the leadership of Regent Wayan Gere-
deg is the construction of breakwater and jetty ramp door. Central government through the ministry of transportation plans to disburse as much as IDR 52 billion. Swastika added the next process is delegated to the chief of Padangbai harbor authority (KSOP) serving as the working unit of the Tanah Ampo harbor development. Though having been dealt by working unit, the government of Karangasem remains to make approach so that the project can have been worked on in 2017. Separately, the KSOP Padangbai, I Ketut Gede Sudarma, admitted that the development budget of the ramp door and breakwater is still asterisked. He said it indicates that some files have not been completed and the working unit is still waiting for further information related to the files considered
incomplete. “We are still awaiting a review from central government,” he said. Though still having administrative obstacles, Sudarma is optimistic that the program to optimize the cruise harbor in 2017 can be implemented. The conviction emerged because the budget of IDR 52 billion has been set forth and entered in the budgetary implementation list (DIPA) of the ASDP Padangbai. The Tanah Ampo port was built in 2008 and has been inactive for long enough. The harbor spending budget of hundreds of billions of rupiahs cannot be moored by yacht because the dock is not long enough, only about 150 meters. The jetty ramp door is the solution for lifeboat to moor, while the breakwater is meant to get around the strong currents of the sea. (117)

The dissident group that had organized the award ceremony is led by the daughter of late democracy activist Oswaldo Paya, who died in a 2012 car accident. Rosa Maria Paya accuses the Cuban government of causing the crash, a charge it denies. Paya went ahead with the ceremony on Wednesday in the Paya family home in Havana as planned, although she said she would keep his prize until he could pick it up in person. That looks unlikely to happen soon. In its statement on the events, Cuba denounced a recent neo-liberal, imperialist offensive against certain Latin American countries that had plunged millions back into poverty. “Where has the OAS been, that has always kept a complicit silence facing these realities?” the ministry asked, reiterating that Cuba would never rejoin the organization. Malaysia requests Interpol alert on four N.Koreans over airport murder
KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia has requested Interpol to put an alert out to apprehend four North Korean suspects in the murder of Kim Jong Nam, Malaysia’s police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said on Thursday. The estranged half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was killed in Kuala Lumpur’s main airport last week, in what South Korean and U.S. officials say was an assassination carried out by North Korean agents. Khalid said on Thursday that two women - one Vietnamese, one Indonesian - arrested last week had been paid for carrying out the fatal assault on Kim Jong Nam using a fast-acting poison, but declined to say if they were working for a spy agency. Police are also holding one North Korean man, but are seeking another seven in connection with the murder. Three of them - a diplomat, a state airline official, and another man - are believed to still be inMalaysia. The other four are believed to have fled Malaysia on Feb. 13, the day of the killing. Khalid told reporters that a request had been made to Interpol to put out an alert to apprehend
the four suspects, who they believe have already made their way back to North Korea. Khalid also said the police have sent an official request to the North Korean embassy requesting to interview the embassy’s second secretary and the airline official, having released their names on Wednesday. “If you have nothing to hide, you should not be afraid to cooperate, you should cooperate,” Khalid told reporters. Khalid said an arrest warrant will not be issued for the second secretary, as he has diplomatic immunity, but that “the process of the law will take place” if the airline official does not come forward. Police have still to receive DNA samples from Kim Jong Nam’s next of kin, Khalid said. He also denied that Malaysian police officers had been sent to Macau, the Chinese territory where Kim Jong Nam and his family had been living under Beijing’s protection. North Korea’s ambassador has said the Malaysian investigation cannot be trusted, and the embassy issued a statement on Wednesday saying that the three suspects that have been detained should be released. BERLIN - Germany posted a record budget surplus last year helped by rising tax revenues and employment and low debt costs, creating conditions for solid economic growth in 2017 underpinned by higher state and household spending. Mexico bristles at ‘hostile’ Trump deportation rules before U.S. talks
MEXICO CITY - Mexico reacted with anger on Wednesday to what one official called “hostile” new U.S. immigration guidelines hours before senior Trump administration envoys began arriving in Mexico City for talks on the volatile issue. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security unveiled plans on Tuesday to consider almost all illegal immigrants subject to deportation, and will seek to send many of them to Mexico if they entered the United States from there, regardless of nationality. The tension over the timing of the rules mirrors an outcry when President Donald Trump said on Twitter Mexico should pay for his planned border wall shortly before Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto was due at a Washington summit in January. However, White House spokesman Sean Spicer said in Washington U.S.-Mexico ties were “phenomenal right now” and that he expected a “great discussion.” Other senior officials also put on a brave face, telling reporters the trip was aimed at building a close working relationship. Trump, who took office last month, campaigned on a pledge to get tougher on the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States, playing on fears of violent crime while promising to build the wall and stop potential terrorists from entering the country. U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson landed in Mexico City on Wednesday afternoon. He was joined by Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly later for talks the White House said would “walk through” the implementation of Trump’s immigration orders. Kelly signed the guidelines issued by his department on Monday. Mexico’s lead negotiator with the Trump administration, Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray, said there was no way Mexico would accept the new rules, which among other things seek to deport non-Mexicans

Homeland Security’s guidance to immigration agents is part of a broader border security and immigration enforcement plan in executive orders that Trump signed on Jan. 25. In Guatemala on Wednesday, Kelly denied the administration was embarking on mass deportations. Jason Marczak, director of the Atlantic Council’s Latin America Economic Growth Initiative, said the Republican president appeared to have timed the unveiling of deportation measures as a negotiating tactic aimed at unsettling Mexico. Astronomers find seven Earth-size planets where life is possible CAPE CANAVERAL - Astronomers have found a nearby solar system with seven Earth-sized planets, three of which circle their parent star at the right distance for liquid surface water, bolstering the prospect of discovering extraterrestrial life, research published on Wednesday showed. The star, known as TRAPPIST-1, is a small, dim celestial body in the constellation Aquarius. It is located about 40 light years away from Earth, close by astronomical standards, but about 44 million years away at the average cruising speed of a commercial passenger jet. Researchers said the proximity of the system, combined with the proportionally large size of its planets compared to the small star, make it a good target for follow-up studies. They hope to scan the planets’ atmospheres for possible chemical fingerprints of life. “The discovery gives us a hint that finding a second Earth is not just a matter of if, but when,” NASA chief scientist Thomas Zurbuchen said at a news conference on Wednesday. The discovery, published in this week’s issue of the journal Nature, builds on previous research showing three planets circling TRAPPIST-1. They are among more than 3,500 planets discovered beyond the solar system, or exoplanets. “This is the first time that so many Earth-sized planets are found around the same star,” lead researcher Michael Gillon, with the University of Liege in Belgium, told reporters. Researchers have focused on finding Earth-sized rocky planets with the right temperatures so that water, if any exists, would be liquid, a condition believed to
be necessary for life. “I think that we’ve made a crucial step towards finding if there is life out there,” University of Cambridge astronomer Amaury Triaud said on a conference call with media on Tuesday. The diameter of TRAPPIST-1 is about 8 percent of the sun’s size. That makes its Earth-sized planets appear large as they parade past. From the vantage point of telescopes on Earth, the planets’ motions regularly block out bits of the star’s light. Scientists determined the system’s architecture by studying these dips. “The data is really clear and unambiguous,” Triaud wrote in an email to Reuters. Because TRAPPIST-1 is so small and cool, its so-called “habitable zone” is very close to the star. Three planets are properly positioned for liquid water, Gillon said. “They form a very compact system,” Gillon told reporters on Tuesday. “They could have some liquid water and maybe life.” Even if the planets do not have life now, it could evolve. TRAPPIST-1 is at least 500 million years old, but has an estimated lifespan of 10 trillion years. The sun, by comparison, is about halfway through its estimated 10-billion-year life. In a few billion years, when the sun has run out of fuel and the solar system has ceased to exist, TRAPPIST-1 will still be an infant star, astronomer Ignas Snellen, with the Netherlands’ Leiden Observatory, wrote in a related essay in Nature. “It burns hydrogen so slowly that it will live for another 10 trillion years,” he wrote, “which is arguably enough time for life to evolve.” (rtr)

Indonesia allows Freeport to carry out exports for one year
JAKARTA - The Indonesian government has given PT Freeport a chance to carry out concentrate exports for one year, although it is still negotiating the continuation of the US-based companys license to operate in Indonesia.
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has issued a recommendation for PT Freeport to export raw minerals for a period of one year. However, according to the Ministry of Trade, PT Freeport has yet to submit application for the export agreement letter (SPE). Based on the recommendation, Freeport is allowed to export 1,113,105 wet metric tons of copper concentrates. The permit allows it to carry out exports from Feb 17, 2017 to Feb 16, 2018. According to Finance Minister Sri Mulyani, the reluctance of Freeport to carry out the export of copper concentrates when it is offered an option could have negative impact on its performance in the long run. “Freeport is a public company; if it stops (exports), its stocks will fall. So, in this case, no party will lose or win,” Mulyani stated in Jakarta on Wednesday. The Indonesian government is still continuing its negotiation process with Freeport to seek the best solution for the national economy and for the continuation of Freeports investment in Indonesia. “We can mutually look at facts contained in the Work of Contract (WoC) and those in the mining law. Since it is difficult to agree to it, the best option indeed is to safeguard our common interest,” Mulyani added. PT Freeport Indonesias parent company Freeport McMoRan Inc, said it would continue to operate in the country despite disagreement on its contract status with the government of Indonesia. “We are committed to staying in Indonesia. It decided to ban the export of unprocessed mineral ores as of January 2014 in a bid to encourage miners to process ore domestically. However, after protest from the industry, the implementation of the ban was pushed back to January 11, 2017, to give an opportunity to mining companies to build smelters. Recently, the government issued Government Regulation (PP) No. 1 of 2017 necessitates mining companies to change their contract of work (CoW) status to a special mining business license (IUPK), if they want to continue exporting concentrates. But they are given a five year deadline to build smelters. Freeport has called for applying old regulations that were used when it was operating under a CoW status. Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Ignatius Jonan however noted that if it changes the status into an IUPK, several provisions (of the CoW) will also be altered. “If (the status of a company) is changed into an IUPK, it will have many provisions. Let the finance minister review which old regulations can be used as this falls under the domain of the tax law similar to the regional government laws, levies, and others,” Minister Ignatius Jonan remarked. The 36-year-old, China’s most successful basketball export, became the first non-government official to lead the sport’s national governing body, state news agency Xinhua said. Yao was confirmed president at a CBA congress in Beijing on Thursday, a report posted on the CBA’s Weibo account said. Local media said he was elected unanimously. The 7ft-6in Shanghai-born centre Yao was the top overall draft pick in 2002 and played nine seasons for the Rockets until retiring in 2011 after injuries began taking their toll. He bought the professional Shanghai Sharks team in 2009 and has been an active power-broker in Chinese basketball since retiring from the NBA. Yao said at the congress he would sell his stake in the Shanghai Sharks before next season and pursue a reform agenda for the professional league, state media reported. “After being regrouped as a full-fledged non-governmental organisation, we have to better study our own situation while learning from overseas expertise to work out our way to develop the game in China,” the China Daily quoted him as saying. MADRID - Real Madrid suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat at struggling Valencia on Wednesday as they missed the opportunity to extend their lead at the top of La Liga after losing for only the second time in the league this season. Simone Zaza, who endured an unhappy loan spell at West Ham United earlier this season, gave Valencia the lead in the fifth minute with a brilliant shot on the turn and Fabian Orellana added the second in the ninth. Cristiano Ronaldo headed Real back into contention just before halftime, but the visitors were unable to build on their momentum after the break. Real remained top on 52 points, one ahead of Barcelona and three clear of Sevilla in third, and still have one game in hand on both of their title rivals. “The truth is we lost the game in 10 minutes. We started well with the ball, we had chances but we made two errors and they scored two goals. We had 80 minutes to rescue the game and tried but we lacked many things today,” Real coach Zinedine Zidane told reporters. “We had the chance to pick up points and we didn’t do it. I hope this has no psychological effect on us. We need to be more focused in future games because if you don’t concentrate you get punished. BEIJING - Former Houston Rockets centre Yao Ming was elected president of the Chinese Basketball Association on Thursday. The 36-year-old, China’s most successful basketball export, became the first non-government official to lead the sport’s national governing body, state news agency Xinhua said. Yao was confirmed president at a CBA congress in Beijing on Thursday, a report posted on the CBA’s Weibo account said. Local media said he was elected unanimously. The 7ft-6in Shanghai-born centre Yao was the top overall draft pick in 2002 and played nine seasons for the Rockets until retiring in 2011 after injuries began taking their toll. He bought the professional Shanghai Sharks team in 2009 and has been an active power-broker in Chinese basketball since retiring from the NBA. Yao said at the congress he would sell his stake in the Shanghai Sharks before next season and pursue a reform agenda for the professional league, state media reported. “After being regrouped as a full-fledged non-governmental organisation, we have to better study our own situation while learning from overseas expertise to work out our way to develop the game in China,” the China Daily quoted him as saying. Mexico bristles at ‘hostile’ Trump deportation rules before U.S. talks
MEXICO CITY - Mexico reacted with anger on Wednesday to what one official called “hostile” new U.S. immigration guidelines hours before senior Trump administration envoys began arriving in Mexico City for talks on the volatile issue. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security unveiled plans on Tuesday to consider almost all illegal immigrants subject to deportation, and will seek to send many of them to Mexico if they entered the United States from there, regardless of nationality. The tension over the timing of the rules mirrors an outcry when President Donald Trump said on Twitter Mexico should pay for his planned border wall shortly before Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto was due at a Washington summit in January. However, White House spokesman Sean Spicer said in Washington U.S.-Mexico ties were “phenomenal right now” and that he expected a “great discussion.” Other senior officials also put on a brave face, telling reporters the trip was aimed at building a close working relationship. Trump, who took office last month, campaigned on a pledge to get tougher on the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States, playing on fears of violent crime while promising to build the wall and stop potential terrorists from entering the country. U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson landed in Mexico City on Wednesday afternoon. He was joined by Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly later for talks the White House said would “walk through” the implementation of Trump’s immigration orders. Astronomers find seven Earth-size planets where life is possible CAPE CANAVERAL - Astronomers have found a nearby solar system with seven Earth-sized planets, three of which circle their parent star at the right distance for liquid surface water, bolstering the prospect of discovering extraterrestrial life, research published on Wednesday showed. The star, known as TRAPPIST-1, is a small, dim celestial body in the constellation Aquarius. It is located about 40 light years away from Earth, close by astronomical standards, but about 44 million years away at the average cruising speed of a commercial passenger jet. Researchers said the proximity of the system, combined with the proportionally large size of its planets compared to the small star, make it a good target for follow-up studies. They hope to scan the planets’ atmospheres for possible chemical fingerprints of life. “The discovery gives us a hint that finding a second Earth is not just a matter of if, but when,” NASA chief scientist Thomas Zurbuchen said at a news conference on Wednesday. The discovery, published in this week’s issue of the journal Nature, builds on previous research showing three planets circling TRAPPIST-1. They are among more than 3,500 planets discovered beyond the solar system, or exoplanets. “This is the first time that so many Earth-sized planets are found around the same star,” lead researcher Michael Gillon, with the University of Liege in Belgium, told reporters. Researchers have focused on finding Earth-sized rocky planets with the right temperatures so that water, if any exists, would be liquid, a condition believed to
be necessary for life. “I think that we’ve made a crucial step towards finding if there is life out there,” University of Cambridge astronomer Amaury Triaud said on a conference call with media on Tuesday. The diameter of TRAPPIST-1 is about 8 percent of the sun’s size. That makes its Earth-sized planets appear large as they parade past. From the vantage point of telescopes on Earth, the planets’ motions regularly block out bits of the star’s light. Scientists determined the system’s architecture by studying these dips. “The data is really clear and unambiguous,” Triaud wrote in an email to Reuters. Because TRAPPIST-1 is so small and cool, its so-called “habitable zone” is very close to the star. Three planets are properly positioned for liquid water, Gillon said. “They form a very compact system,” Gillon told reporters on Tuesday. “They could have some liquid water and maybe life.” Even if the planets do not have life now, it could evolve. TRAPPIST-1 is at least 500 million years old, but has an estimated lifespan of 10 trillion years. The sun, by comparison, is about halfway through its estimated 10-billion-year life. In a few billion years, when the sun has run out of fuel and the solar system has ceased to exist, TRAPPIST-1 will still be an infant star, astronomer Ignas Snellen, with the Netherlands’ Leiden Observatory, wrote in a related essay in Nature. “It burns hydrogen so slowly that it will live for another 10 trillion years,” he wrote, “which is arguably enough time for life to evolve.” (rtr)

Indonesia allows Freeport to carry out exports for one year
JAKARTA - The Indonesian government has given PT Freeport a chance to carry out concentrate exports for one year, although it is still negotiating the continuation of the US-based companys license to operate in Indonesia.
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has issued a recommendation for PT Freeport to export raw minerals for a period of one year. However, according to the Ministry of Trade, PT Freeport has yet to submit application for the export agreement letter (SPE). Based on the recommendation, Freeport is allowed to export 1,113,105 wet metric tons of copper concentrates. The permit allows it to carry out exports from Feb 17, 2017 to Feb 16, 2018. According to Finance Minister Sri Mulyani, the reluctance of Freeport to carry out the export of copper concentrates when it is offered an option could have negative impact on its performance in the long run. “Freeport is a public company; if it stops (exports), its stocks will fall. So, in this case, no party will lose or win,” Mulyani stated in Jakarta on Wednesday. The Indonesian government is still continuing its negotiation process with Freeport to seek the best solution for the national economy and for the continuation of Freeports investment in Indonesia. “We can mutually look at facts contained in the Work of Contract (WoC) and those in the mining law. Since it is difficult to agree to it, the best option indeed is to safeguard our common interest,” Mulyani added. PT Freeport Indonesias parent company Freeport McMoRan Inc, said it would continue to operate in the country despite disagreement on its contract status with the government of Indonesia. “We are committed to staying in Indonesia. However, after protest from the industry, the implementation of the ban was pushed back to January 11, 2017, to give an opportunity to mining companies to build smelters. Recently, the government issued Government Regulation (PP) No. 1 of 2017 necessitates mining companies to change their contract of work (CoW) status to a special mining business license (IUPK), if they want to continue exporting concentrates. But they are given a five year deadline to build smelters. Freeport has called for applying old regulations that were used when it was operating under a CoW status. Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Ignatius Jonan however noted that if it changes the status into an IUPK, several provisions (of the CoW) will also be altered. “If (the status of a company) is changed into an IUPK, it will have many provisions. Let the finance minister review which old regulations can be used as this falls under the domain of the tax law similar to the regional government laws, levies, and others,” Minister Ignatius Jonan remarked. growth to slow to a still robust 1.4 percent in 2017. “The German economy is on a solid growth path,” the finance ministry said in its monthly report, also released on Thursday, adding that indicators signaled a continuation of the economic upswing in 2017. “Consumption will probably remain an important driver of economic growth,” the ministry said, pointing to job creation, pay hikes, low interest rates and moderate, albeit rising energy prices. The ministry’s report supported readings in Wednesday’s Ifo index, which showed German business morale rose in February, boosting hopes for a robust start to 2017 despite worries about U.S. trade policies and the outcome of elections in France due in April and May.

Suggesting it might weaken, a survey showed on Thursday that the mood among German consumers worsened more than expected heading into March to reach its lowest level in four months. The survey by the Nurembergbased GfK institute cited rising inflation and economic risks linked to the policies of U.S. President Donald Trump as the main factors for the dip. Its consumer sentiment indicator, based on a survey of around 2,000 Germans, fell to 10.0 going into March. A Reuters poll had expected a fall to 10.1 from 10.2 a month earlier.(rtr)

AMLAPURA - The government of Karangasem hopes the Tanah Ampo cruise ship can soon be functioned by persistent lobbying the budget to central government. But lately, continuation of the cruise pier construction is increasingly uncertain. Central government had been providing budget but so far there are no indications to disburse it. The disconcerting condition was recognized by the Head of the Karangasem Transportation Agency, I.B. Putu Swastika. His agency had time to check the budget plan to the ministry of transportation but the budget item is till marked with asterisk. “I do not understand what the asterisk means,” he said on Wednesday (Feb. 22). Continuation program of the project commencing under the leadership of Regent Wayan Gere-
deg is the construction of breakwater and jetty ramp door. Central government through the ministry of transportation plans to disburse as much as IDR 52 billion. Swastika added the next process is delegated to the chief of Padangbai harbor authority (KSOP) serving as the working unit of the Tanah Ampo harbor development. Though having been dealt by working unit, the government of Karangasem remains to make approach so that the project can have been worked on in 2017. Separately, the KSOP Padangbai, I Ketut Gede Sudarma, admitted that the development budget of the ramp door and breakwater is still asterisked. He said it indicates that some files have not been completed and the working unit is still waiting for further information related to the files considered
incomplete. “We are still awaiting a review from central government,” he said. Though still having administrative obstacles, Sudarma is optimistic that the program to optimize the cruise harbor in 2017 can be implemented. The conviction emerged because the budget of IDR 52 billion has been set forth and entered in the budgetary implementation list (DIPA) of the ASDP Padangbai. The Tanah Ampo port was built in 2008 and has been inactive for long enough. The harbor spending budget of hundreds of billions of rupiahs cannot be moored by yacht because the dock is not long enough, only about 150 meters. The jetty ramp door is the solution for lifeboat to moor, while the breakwater is meant to get around the strong currents of the sea. (117)

Cuba, which views the Washington-based OAS as an imperialist instrument of the United States despite its fledgling detente with its Cold War foe, denied Almagro and other international invitees visas and issued a blistering statement. The incident comes at an awkward time as U.S. President Donald Trump considers whether to continue normalizing relations with the Caribbean island. “The plan ... consisted of mounting in Havana an open and serious provocation against theCuban government, generating internal instability, damaging the country’s international reputation,” the statement by the foreign ministry read. The ministry accused Almagro of “an ambition agenda of auto promotion with attacks against progressive governments like those of Venezuela, Bolivia and Ecuador.” In a letter to the dissidents, Almagro said he had assured the Cuban authorities he did not have an anti-Cuban agenda. The OAS’s only interest was to “help move Cuba closer to the values and principles upheld by the organization in relation to democracy and human rights,” he said. Cuba had earlier prevented other international invitees, including a former Chilean minister and an ex-president of Mexico, from traveling to Cuba to attend the award ceremony, stoking tensions across Latin America. Chile said it was recalling its ambassador to Cuba for consultation while Mexico’s foreign ministry said on its Twitter account that it “regretted” Cuba’s decision. The Cuban foreign ministry defended
its move as “impeccable act of transparency,” saying it had contacted the countries from which invitees were traveling to inform them of the plot, hoping they could be dissuaded from traveling. “There was no lack of declarations by defenders of the false persecuted, allies of past dictatorships and unemployed politicians willing to ally themselves with vulgar mercenaries in the service of foreign interests,” the ministry said. The dissident group that had organized the award ceremony is led by the daughter of late democracy activist Oswaldo Paya, who died in a 2012 car accident. Rosa Maria Paya accuses the Cuban government of causing the crash, a charge it denies. Paya went ahead with the ceremony on Wednesday in the Paya family home in Havana as planned, although she said she would keep his prize until he could pick it up in person. That looks unlikely to happen soon. In its statement on the events, Cuba denounced a recent neo-liberal, imperialist offensive against certain Latin American countries that had plunged millions back into poverty. “Where has the OAS been, that has always kept a complicit silence facing these realities?” the ministry asked, reiterating that Cuba would never rejoin the organization. Fidel Castro, a leading Cold War figure who built a communist state on the doorstep of the United States and defied U.S. attempts to topple him, died in November at the age of 90, eight years after handing the presidency over to his younger brother, Raul. Malaysia requests Interpol alert on four N.Koreans over airport murder
KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia has requested Interpol to put an alert out to apprehend four North Korean suspects in the murder of Kim Jong Nam, Malaysia’s police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said on Thursday. The estranged half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was killed in Kuala Lumpur’s main airport last week, in what South Korean and U.S. officials say was an assassination carried out by North Korean agents. Khalid said on Thursday that two women - one Vietnamese, one Indonesian - arrested last week had been paid for carrying out the fatal assault on Kim Jong Nam using a fast-acting poison, but declined to say if they were working for a spy agency. Police are also holding one North Korean man, but are seeking another seven in connection with the murder. Three of them - a diplomat, a state airline official, and another man - are believed to still be inMalaysia. The other four are believed to have fled Malaysia on Feb. 13, the day of the killing. Khalid told reporters that a request had been made to Interpol to put out an alert to apprehend
the four suspects, who they believe have already made their way back to North Korea. Khalid also said the police have sent an official request to the North Korean embassy requesting to interview the embassy’s second secretary and the airline official, having released their names on Wednesday. “If you have nothing to hide, you should not be afraid to cooperate, you should cooperate,” Khalid told reporters. Khalid said an arrest warrant will not be issued for the second secretary, as he has diplomatic immunity, but that “the process of the law will take place” if the airline official does not come forward. Police have still to receive DNA samples from Kim Jong Nam’s next of kin, Khalid said. He also denied that Malaysian police officers had been sent to Macau, the Chinese territory where Kim Jong Nam and his family had been living under Beijing’s protection. North Korea’s ambassador has said the Malaysian investigation cannot be trusted, and the embassy issued a statement on Wednesday saying that the three suspects that have been detained should be released. Gucci’s magic garden kick off Milan Fashion week
MILAN - The curtain went up on Milan’s fashion week on Wednesday with Gucci’s enchanted garden inspired looks and Fay’s 1990s rock chick styles paraded for the womenswear autumn and winter 2017/2018 season. After New York and London, the Italian capital of fashion will be the setting for six days of runway shows, exhibitions, parties and events as the fashion elite, designers, bloggers and media flock to the city. Gucci, the biggest brand of French luxury giant Kering , kicked off the extravaganza showcasing clothes with flowers, insects, animals and symbols, with
models walking on an elevated glass runway surrounding a silver pyramid. Outfits by Alessandro Michele, creative director since January 2015, were inspired by an “alchemist’s garden, a magical place ... where apparent contradictions live together”, the style note said. The first model wore a long white pleated skirt matched with a long white and black cardigan and a red top with a big pearl necklace, in a classical look. But the conservative style was soon broken as she was followed by girls covering themselves with wide parasols, carrying arrows, wearing glitter leggings, long
ruffled and flowered dresses, models with their heads covered in balaclavas, men in shorts and embroidered capes as well as models looking like farmers and maids. Bukti Beach revetment collapses
Air Sanih pool threatened by inflow of seawater
SINGARAJA - The coastal revetment in Bukti village, Kubutambahan, collapsed after being eroded by large waves during the harsh rainy season. Since the collapse of the revetment, the Air Sanih public bathing pool has become threatened by pounded ocean waves located as it is right near the beach. In order to avoid disruption to tourism activities, the pool must be repaired immediately. The Bukti Beach revetment collapsed along some 5-10 meters and the river stones that were installed to lessen the impact of ocean waves have broken off. Inevitably, the concrete revetment that rigidly stretching from east to west now seems to be breaking apart near the pool. In fact when there are large waves, seawater enters the bathing pool. Naturally this is disruptive to tourists visiting East Buleleng who wish to swim in Air Sanih pool. After the revetment broke, the surroudings started to look quite chaotic. Although this in itself is not necessarily a problem, salt water entering the pool, certainly is. The only way to prevent a disruption to tourism activities here is to
repair the damaged breakwater. Head of the Buleleng Tourism Office, Nyoman Sutrisna, when contacted on Tuesday (Feb. 21) said that the damage to the revetment to the north of the swimming pool has been reported to the regional disaster mitigation agency (BPBD) of Buleleng. He added that he hopes that it can be dealt with immediately si that the damage does not worsen and that the area around the Air Sanih tourist attraction will not remain chaotic for long. “Overall, the incident has not disrupt the infrastructure of the tourist attraction, but the supporting infrastructure like the revetment to the north of the pool has collapsed.
We have reported this to the BPBD and are confident that the damage will be addressed shortly” he said. Sutrisna admitted that the environment around the tourist attraction has been disturbed but added that there is no inflow of seawater into the pool unless there are extremely large waves at sea. “Currently, the situation is back to normal, normal waves will not splash into the pool because the pool wall remains intact. The collapsed revetment has caused a
slight disturbance to the environment around the tourist attraction”, he explained. However, he also added that since recent bout of extremely heavy rains have cause floods and landslides, the tourism agency has sent letters out to the management of tourist attractions throughout North Bali, reminding them to pay close attention to weather conditions and to do their best to prevent any visitors from having a bad experience.
If the weather is not conducive to safety, toursim managers are advised to temporarily close down their operations. “Our letters of appeal have been received. Even though the weather is back to normal, we suggest that tourism managers remain vigilant. If the weather changes for the worse, they should not force themselves to operate as normal and should think carefully about the safety of visiting travellers”, added Sutrisna. (kmb38)

Waves back to normal, marine tourism still lacks visitors SINGARAJA - Waves along the coast of Buleleng in areas like Lovina retruned to normal a week ago after reaching heights of some 2 meters previously. However, marine tourists are still scarce causing tourism entrepreneurs in the area to become frustrated. As observed on Tuesday (Feb. 21), the sea had returned to normal and fishing boats that had been brought inland have been placed back along the shore. Catur Bhakti Karya Segara Kalibukbuk fishermen group leader, Putu Budista, revealed that the ocean’s waves calmed down a week ago so marine tourism activities can resume as normal. “It is now possible to go dolphin watching. The waves are back to normal”, he explained. He added however that both foreign and domestic tourists remain scarce. This is perhaps due in part to the limited time of the holiday season. Tourism operators are also
reluctanctly accepting these conditions. “Now the waves are back to normal but there are very few visitors” , he said. When contacted separately, Head of the Buleleng Tourism Office, I Nyoman Sutrisna, confirmed that there had been a drop in the number of tourists to the region – particularly tourist interested in marine activities as many still worry about possible tidal waves. “Security factor
are at play. Now the waves are back to normal, but there is still the potential for higher waves to return”, he said. Sutrisna predicted that there will be an increase in the number of tourists visiting the area in March and over the holidays “There is always a high season and a low season for foreign travellers, normally there are crowds of visitors in March, July and August”, he said. Stench fluid directly discharged into river
Water of lake overflows every nearing festival at Dalem temple

WATER of Lake Batur has been overflowing back since three weeks ago. As a result, the lake water submerges the paving block pathway so that the road access at the lakeside of Terunyan including people’s house is submerged in lake water.
A villager of Terunyan, I Nengah Guantara, said on Tuesday (Feb. 22) that water of Lake Batur overflowed about three weeks ago. When it rained, the lake water has begun to rise. However, the flood just happens this time to close road access at lakeside and overflows into people’s settlement of Terunyan. He stated that similar incident also occurred about five years ago and was even more severe than the current condition. At that time, people’s house was submerged in water with the height of adult waist. As a result, people could no longer occupy their house because of being submerged in the lake water. Ultimately all people had to be evacuated to higher and more secure location while waiting for the lake water to recede. “Every year ahead of the temple festival or piodalan at Dalem Temple, the water of Lake Batur always rises. Festival at this temple will be held next March. So, the overflowing lake water is a regular incident every year. And this year it also re-submerges the home of Terunyan villagers,” he said. He said there are many factors causing the lake
water to overflow back such as the very high rain intensity as well as the silting of lake bed due to landslide materials carried by the flows into the lake. So, when it rains the lake water will be likely to rise. According to him, local people are accustomed to facing the overflowing lake water incident like this, so that it no longer makes them worried. “Now, the lake water has reached home’s plain. The water level reaches half a meter from bed. Nevertheless, people still sleep there because they have no other house. Since their bed is in higher position, the lake water does not reach theirs. In essence, local residents are still quiet because they are accustomed to facing something like this,” he said. He did not know for sure how long the lake water will continue to soak people’s houses as the rainfall remains high. “Rain is estimated to take place until the end of February. However, it stays to rain. If the rain continues the lake water will rise. Then, it will usually subside in hot season,” he explained. Another resident, I Wayan Bona, admitted that actually much lake water has been sucked by people to flush their farmland. Though having been sucked, the lake water remains high. “Besides, the lake water is also sucked at Songan and brought to behind the hill, namely Alengkong hamlet for farming. Nevertheless, the lake water is still high,” added Wayan Bona. (nan)
MANGUPURA - White liquid alleged to be scented waste is flowing from drainage channel to the flow of Mati River. It could be seen in the flow of Mati River around the Gelora Samudera Stadium, Kuta, on Wednesday (Feb. 22). A local resident, Made Surya, passing around the location claimed that the liquid waste is alleged to have exuded a very pungent odor. This condition is surely very disturbing people passing in the area. Surya requested the relevant agency to check and take action. “Hopefully, relevant agencies could take action as it exudes scents,” he said. When confirmed related to the waste, the Head of Badung Environment and Sanitation Agency (DLHK), Putu Eka Merthawan, promised to assign a team to the location next week. The waste problem, according to him, would get serious attention from the DLHK. As is known, the DLHK is currently focusing on the waste problem as well as on sanitation. “Related to sanitation issue, Badung has been relatively clean. Then, we will continuously monitor the waste and this has become our priority. Besides, we also pay attention to the unmonitored waste of hotel, restaurant, businesses and the public,” he said. For waste issue, his agency has begun to prepare an adequately
tight standard operating procedure (SOP). As planned, this breakthrough will be realized in March. “We have prepared the SOP. Hopefully, it could be ready in March,” he said. Following up on this, environmental issues will refer to the Law No.32/2009 on the environment. With the enforcement of the law, the offenders could be subject to sanctions maximally IDR 5 billion and the revocation of their environmental permit. “We will absolutely guard this case. The sanction is very severe, namely three monthimprisonment with a fine of IDR 5 billion plus revocation of environmental permit. When environmental permit is revoked, automatically the principle permit, business permit and building permit will also terminate,” he explained. To implement the actions, surely there are some stages and will not take severe measure against the violation arbitrarily. His agency will also cooperate with prosecutor and police authority in this case. The agency will implement environmental management system as applied in Batam. It becomes the benchmark for handling environmental monitoring system in Batam, and becomes the best in Indonesia. “This t year, we will provide training first. Then in 2018, should there be any violations, we will immediately impose sanctions,” he said. (kmb23)

Princess Diana’s dresses go on display in London, 20 years after her death
LONDON - Gowns worn by Princess Diana for everything from meeting diplomats to dancing with movie stars feature in an exhibition celebrating the fashion of one of Britain’s favourite royals, which opens in London this week. The collection of 25 dresses will be displayed from Friday for the rest of the year in Kensington Palace, where she lived for over 15 years. The exhibition coincides with the 20th anniversary of her death. It features an ink-blue velvet gown worn by Diana when she danced with actor John Travolta at
the White House in 1985, as well as her “Elvis” dress - high-collared and encrusted with pearls. The collection also shows Diana’s “understanding of how to deploy fashion as a diplomatic tool,” organisers said, including one dress that incorporates the national bird of Saudia Arabia, the falcon.
“Our exhibition explores the story of a young woman who had to quickly learn the rules of royal and diplomatic dressing, who in the process put the spotlight on the British fashion industry and designers,” said Eleri Lynn, curator of “Diana: Her Fashion Story”. Diana, mother to Princes William and Harry, was married to heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles between 1981 and 1996 when the couple divorced. She died in a car crash in Paris in 1997. (rtr)

JAKARTA — A report on inequality in Indonesia says its four richest men now have more wealth than 100 million of the country’s poorest people.
The report released Thursday by Oxfam said Indonesia, with a population of more than 250 million, has the sixth-worst inequality in the world. Within Asia, only Thailand is more unequal. It blames “market fundamentalism” that has allowed the richest to capture most of the benefits of nearly two decades of strong economic growth, concentration of land ownership and pervasive gender inequality. The INVESTMENT RETURNS on the wealth of just one of the four richest, which according to the Forbes rich list include cigarette tycoons Budi Hartono, Michael Hartono and Susilo Wonowidjojo, would eliminate extreme poverty in a year. The report said extreme poverty
of less than $1.90 a day in income has declined sharply since 2000 but 93 million Indonesians still live on less than $3.10, which is defined by the World Bank as the moderate poverty line. Oxfam said social instability could increase if the government doesn’t tackle the gap between rich and poor. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has said that reducing inequality is a top priority for his government. A 2015 World Bank survey showed high levels of public concern about the wealth gap. The report said Indonesia’s tax collection is the second-lowest in Southeast Asia and the tax system is “failing to play its necessary role in redistributing wealth.”
To increase the tax take, so low spending on public services such as education and health can be increased, Indonesia needs a higher tax rate on the top incomes, higher inheritance tax and a new wealth tax, it said.
