The deliberate slip of the tongue acknowledged the striking absence of nonwhite performers among this year’s crop of Academy Award nominees. Clearly relishing his Oscar duties, Harris went on to spoof Michael Keaton’s underwear scene in “Birdman” -- which went on to win best picture -- appearing on stage in white briefs, black socks and nothing else. “Benedict Cumberbatch,” he said in another joke later in the evening, introducing the best-actor nominee for “The Imitation Game.” “It’s not only the most awesome name in
show business, it’s also the sound you get when you ask John Travolta to pronounce Ben Affleck.” When “Citizenfour” won best documentary, Harris couldn’t help making a play on words, saying intelligence whistleblower Edward Snowden “could not be here tonight for some treason.” But not all Harris’s gags worked. ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ stays on top Blanchett leaving Sydney LOS ANGELES — “Fifty Shades of Grey” didn’t relinquish control of the box office. Universal’s erotic drama starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan earned $23.2 million at No. 1 in its second weekend at the box office, according to studio estimates Sunday. The adaptation of E.L. James’ bestselling novel earned an additional $68.1 million overseas. Despite the victory, director Sam Taylor-Johnson’s “Fifty Shades of Grey” plummeted a steep 73 percent from its record-breaking $85 million three-day debut over President’s Day weekend. “There was a pent-up demand and excitement for ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ last weekend, so this was its destiny after it broke the box-office record for the biggest opening in February and didn’t have the added bonus of a holiday weekend,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box office firm Rentrak. The action spy film “Kingsman: The Secret Service” and the family friendly “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water” similarly maintained their respective No. 2 and No. 3 spots at the box office in their second weekend.
Fox’s “Kingsman” nabbed $17.5 million, while Paramount’s “SpongeBob” soaked up another $15.5 million. A trio of newcomers failed to crack the top three. SYDNEY - Australian Oscar winner Cate Blanchett plans to leave her Sydney home and move to the United States where her artistic director husband Andrew Upton will pursue freelance writing opportunities, a report said Monday. The in-demand actress, who won Oscars for her roles in “The Aviator” and Woody Allen’s “Blue Jasmine”, will make the move later this year. “It was a very hard decision,” Upton, the artistic director of the Sydney Theatre Company, told the Sydney Morning Herald. “But the deciding factor was that our children are still of an age where they can be mobile without disrupting their education too much. “We spent nine years living in England and we loved it. But now we’d like to try America. They have terrific (opportunities in) television there and Cate has a very strong film career there, too, obviously.” Blanchett started out as a theatre actress in Sydney, where she won critical and popular acclaim with a string of successes for the Sydney Theatre Company. She was also joint artistic director with Upton of the company from 2008 to 2012 and is patron of the Australian Film Institute.
Upton said he wanted to return to writing while in the United States. “I want to get back into the freelance writing lifestyle, which I have been missing,” he said. “I am interested in writing for television and film, as well as theatre.” (afp)

Tribal tattoo found on the corpse of foreign citizen
DENPASAR - The body of a foreign citizen was discovered on Uluwatu Beach, South Kuta, on Sunday (Feb. 22) and was immediately taken to the mortuary of Sanglah Hospital and examined. Results of the external examination revealed that the body (labeled code 012) was an adult male foreign citizen “wearing cream-colored Billabong surf shorts and a plaid shirt” explained the local officer.
Thee victim’s right arm was tattooed with a tribal motif, his abdomen was black and his hands and legs were covered with abrasions including an open wound on the palm of his right hand, “Allegedly these
wounds were caused by stripping on a rock or some such object” added the officer. It was estimated that the victim had drowned approximately twelve hours before being found. (kmb42)

Flood hits Bali
Governor said nature is angry
DENPASAR – Governor of Bali Made Pastika spoke out about the flooding that occurred over the last few days in Bali and particularly Denpasar. According to the governor, the flooding was caused by the lack of public awareness regarding nature, and also by rainfall, which was indeed very heavy. “Nature is angry because we have have been haphazardly cutting down trees, polluting, litttering , not wanting to plant tress nor pay attention to the sanitation of city gutters,” he said in Denpasar, on Sunday (Feb. 22). Pastika perceived that few people want to clear garbage from the gutters that is clogging the drains. He also called on people to, at the very least not throw garbage into a drains or rivers. Such a
littering can lead to flooding. “Garbage piling up in gutters can cause clogging and lead to flooding. For this reason, I appeal to the people not to litter. Other than causing a dirty enviroenment, it also contributes to flooding,” he said. The Governor also invited all levels of society, ranging from Bali’s provincial to county, municipal,village and hamlets level officials to be more concerned about nature. When flooding happens, people should not complain but should rather think about what has clogged the drain. “Let’s allow for green open spaces and comply with the existing rules if we want nature to be friendly towards us,” he said. Losses from disaster estimated to be in the billions of rupiahs BANGLI - Material losses due to strong winds that hit almost all parts of Bangli on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 22) have begun to be calculated by the Bangli Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD). Although the figures are not exact, losses due to the damage to dozens of houses and temples is estimated to be substancial. “Yesterday, wind storm is estimated to have caused billions of Rupiah in damages,” said Head of the BPBD Bangli, Wayan Karmawan, when asked for his confirmation, on Sunday (Feb. 22). According to Karmawan, estimated losses include damage to houses and public facilities throughout Bangli. He said that the afternoon storm severely damaged at least 50 buildings, including homes, schools, sacred buildings and public facilities. The most severe damage hit three villages in Kintamani, namely Subaya village, Kutuh village and Kubu Salya hamlet at Sukawana village. The three villages were hit by the brunt of the typhoon, with two families having to be evacuated because their homes were destroyed and could no longer be occupied. The BPBD is still collecting
data in order to come up with more precise figures regarding the extent of the damage caused by the typhoon. “Today, we will continue our efforts to deal with the disaster as well as collect date,” he added. In Bangli subdistrict, the strong winds caused a banyan tree at Tamanbali to fall and topple over six stalls in the vicinity. The incident also caused a traffic-jam at the Bangli-Gianyar road section. In Tamanbali, a falling tree hit a house at Sidawa hamlet, and a temple at Uma Anyar village. At Sidembunut hamlet, Cempaga village, a tree toppled over a house. A shrine in the middle courtyard of Kehen Temple, was also damaged by a falling tree. Meanwhile, in Susut subdistrict, tress fell at the junction of Demulih, at the route of Tanggahan Peken-Kayuambua and at Manuk hamlet that caused traffic jam in each of these areas. In addition, at Tanggahan hamlet, Demulih village, the house of a local resident was severely damaged by a fallen tree. At Serokadan hamlet, Apuan village the shrine of a resident was toppled over by tree. At Demulih-Sala, a fallen tree caused a traffic-jam. Then,
at Penglumbaran village, a fallen tree toppled over a resident breaking his leg as ascertained after being rushed to hospital. In Tembuku subdistrict, a tree at Nyanglan Kaja hamlet, Bangbang village, collapsed and caused traffic jams on the BangbangKlungkung road section. In addi-

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Antarctica: Mystery continent holds key to mankind’s future
DECEPTION ISLAND, Antarctica — Earth’s past, present and future come together here on the northern peninsula of Antarctica, the wildest, most desolate and mysterious of its continents.
Clues to answering humanity’s most basic questions are locked in this continental freezer the size of the United States and half of Canada: Where did we come from? Are we alone in the universe? What’s the fate of our warming planet? The first explorers set foot in Antarctica 194 years ago hunting 19th century riches of whale and seal oil and fur, turning tides red with blood. Since then, the fist-shaped continent has proven a treasure chest for scientists trying to determine everything from the creation of the cosmos to how high seas will rise with global warming. “It’s a window out to the universe and in time,” said Kelly Falkner, polar program chief for the U.S. National Science Foundation. For a dozen days in January, in the middle of the chilly Antarctic summer, The Associated Press followed scientists from different fields searching for alien-like creatures, hints of pollution trapped in ancient ice, leftovers from the Big Bang, biological quirks that potentially could lead to better medical treatments, and perhaps most of all, signs of unstoppable melting. The journey on a Chilean navy ship along the South Shetland islands and vulnerable Antarctic Peninsula, which juts off the continent like a broken pinky finger, logged 833 miles (1,340 kilometers) and allowing the AP team a firsthand look at part of this vital continent. About 98 percent of it is covered by ice, and that ice is constantly moving. Temperatures can range from above zero in the South Shetlands and Antarctic Peninsula to the unbearable frozen lands near the South Pole. As an active volcano, Deception Island is a pot of extreme conditions. There are spots where the sea boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit (100 degrees Celsius), while in others it can be freezing at below 32 (0 degrees Celsius). And while the sun rarely shines on the long, dark Antarctic winters, nighttime never seems to fall on summer days. While tourists come to Antarctica for its beauty and remoteness, scientists are all business. What they
find could affect the lives of people thousands of miles away; if experts are right, and the West Antarctic ice sheet has started melting irreversibly, what happens here will determine if cities such as Miami, New York, New Orleans, Guangzhou, Mumbai, London and Osaka will have to regularly battle flooding from rising seas. Antarctica “is big and it’s changing and it affects the rest of the planet and we can’t afford to ignore what’s going on down there,” said David Vaughan, science director of the British Antarctic Survey. Often, scientists find something other than what they were looking for. Last year researchers calculated that ice on the western side of the continent was melting faster than
expected. Last month, scientists researching vital geology in that melting were looking a half mile under the ice in pitch dark and found a surprise: fish a half foot (15 centimeters) long and shrimp-like creatures swimming by their cameras. Geologists are entranced by Antarctica’s secrets. On a recent scientific expedition led by Chile’s Antarctic Institute, Richard Spikings, a research geologist at the University of Geneva, wielded a large hammer to collect rock samples in the South Shetlands and the Antarctic Peninsula. Curious members of a penguin colony on Cape Legoupil watched as he pounded on slabs of black granite and diorite rising out of the southern ocean. By the end of the two-week
trip, his colleagues had jokingly begun calling him “Thor.” “To understand many aspects in the diversity of animals and plants it’s important to understand when continents disassembled,” Spikings said. “So we’re also learning about the real antiquity of the Earth and how (continents) were configured together a billion years ago, half a billion years ago, 300 million years ago,” he said, adding that the insights will help him understand Antarctica’s key role in the jigsaw of ancient super continents. With names like Rodinia, Gondwana and Pangaea, scientists believe they were significant landmasses in Earth’s history and were periodically joined together through the movement of plates. (ap)

University’s School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences. “This may not seem like a lot, but it represents a big jump.” Body-size increases have occurred since animals first appeared in the fossil record, some 550 million years ago, according to the study. “We’ve known for some time now that the largest organisms alive today are larger than the largest organisms that were alive when life originated or even when animals first evolved,” said Jonathan Payne, a paleobiologist at the same Stanford school who
led the research. But it was not known if the average size of animals had changed over time and whether this reflected an evolutionary trend in body size, he added. The phenomenon does not apply to all animal lineages, but it was particularly evident in those that were the largest and most diverse in the early evolutionary record, according to the researchers. “For reasons that we don’t completely understand, the classes with large body size appear to be the ones that over time have become differentially more di-
verse,” Payne said. The computer-modelled research reinforces the so-called Cope rule, named after the 19thcentury paleontologist who determined that biological lineages tended to evolve to larger sizes over time. Edward Cope observed that mammals like horses grew larger over generations. Scientists had previously tried to verify Cope’s theory in other groups of animals but the findings were mixed. Corals and dinosaurs seemed to confirm the theory, but birds and insects did not.
As a result, some scientists questioned whether or not the trend in terrestrial animals was a true evolutionary phenomenon. Payne’s team set about to conduct the most comprehensive-ever test of Cope’s theory, compiling a database of more than 17,000 groups, or genera, of marine animals including arthropods and mollusks spanning the last 542 million years. “Nearly 75 percent of all of marine genera in the fossil record and nearly 60 percent of all the animal genera that ever lived are included in our dataset,” Heim said. “Free visa negotiation is underway by considering the aspects of reciprocity, advantages and security,” said Foreign Affairs Ministry’s acting director of Central and East Europe Directory Ibnu Hadi recently. In terms of visa-free arrangement on a reciprocal basis, Hadi mentioned that Russia had implemented it with Thailand, “Then why don’t they do the same with Indonesia?” Since early January 2015, Indonesia has officially waived visa requirements for visitors from Australia, China, Japan, South Korea and Russia wishing to travel to the country. Hadi said Russia is among the countries which have the potential to become one of the major markets for the Indonesian tourism. According to data from the Tourism Ministry, Russia is one of the top twenty sources of tourist arrivals in Indonesia. In 2013, a total of 93,622 Russian nationals visited Indonesia, and in 2014 the number decreased to 88,775. The decrease, Hadi said, was caused by some factors, such as no direct flight from Indonesia to Russia and the sluggish Russian economy which caused Rubel currency to
depreciate against the US dollar. The Russian honorary consular based in Denpasar, Bali, Chairul Nuku Hamka, explained that almost 72 thousand Russian tourists visited Bali Island in 2014. “On average about four to five thousand Russian tourists visit Bali per month,” he said. In 2015, the Indonesian government plans to cooperate with Russia, China, Japan, South Korea, and Australia in implementing visa-free arrangement on a reciprocal basis. The government has set itself the target of raising the number of tourist arrivals to 20 million by 2019 through the visa-free arrangement. However, Ibnu Hadi said not all states used reciprocity in implementing free visa policy and Australia is one of the examples. Nationally, Indonesia recorded 9,435,411 tourist arrivals in 2014, up 7.2 percent from 8,802,129 recorded in 2013. Promoting tourism abroad is part of Indonesian representatives’ economic diplomatic efforts, as proclaimed by President Joko Widodo. Australians on death row ask Indonesia to let them live DENPASAR - Two Australians on death row appealed to Indonesian president Joko Widodo on Sunday to let them live so they can continue helping fellow prisoners in a rehabilitation programme, their brothers said. The kin of drug smugglers Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan made a statement to the media after visiting the pair in Kerobokan prison on Bali island. “We see and hear many prisoners doing courses go on to jobs and better lives. Our brothers’ great wishes for the President is to allow them to continue this help, to rebuild the lives of many more Indonesians for many more years to come,” Michael Chan told reporters outside the prison. The statement comes after Indonesia authorities delayed their execution by up to a month, backtracking on an earlier pledge to put the two men before the firing squad by the end of February. Australia’s government has voiced strong opposition to the planned executions. “Our brothers are very grateful for the support and kindness shown to them by so many people, and we are amazed at their strength and resilience during this stressful time,”

North Korea has been under increasing pressure from the U.N. over its human rights record and is facing new sanctions from Washington over its alleged involvement in the massive hack attack on Sony Pictures in December. Japan’s farm minister resigns amid political funds questions
TOKYO — Japan’s agriculture minister stepped down Monday following questions over political funding contributions, the latest in a series of such resignations. Koya Nishikawa resigned as head of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries saying he wanted to avoid disruptions to parliamentary proceedings. Questions arose over an alleged 1 million yen ($8,400) donation to a ruling Liberal Democratic Party chapter headed by Nishikawa from a company run by a sugar manufacturers association that had received government subsidies. “No matter how much I explain the situation, if people don’t understand they don’t understand,” Nishikawa told reporters. “There is absolutely no conflict with the law, but people can still use this to tarnish my image.” Nishikawa and other government officials said earlier that he had returned the money. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters that he had resisted, but in the end accepted Nishikawa’s resignation. “He was determined to quit, and I have to respect his wishes. I think it’s really regrettable,” Abe said. He said he was asking lawmaker Yoshimasa Hayashi, who preceded Nishikawa as farm minister before a Cabinet reshuffle in September, to resume the post. Abe praised Nishikawa for working on agricultural reforms and Japan’s efforts toward forming a pan-Pacific trade pact, called the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Japan’s protection of its sugar industry is one of five sensitive areas in negotiations with the U.S. toward the trade agreement. Political funding scandals are a chronic problem in Japanese politics and questions over Nishikawa’s situation surfaced last fall. Asian markets mostly higher on Greek debt deal TOKYO - Asian stocks broadly rose Monday as investors cheered a tentative deal to extend Greece’s bailout, giving Athens a last-minute lifeline to pay its bills and avoid a damaging default. Japan’s ANA joins bid to rescue bankrupt Skymark Airlines
TOKYO - Japan’s All Nippon Airways on Monday announced plans to help turn around bankrupt Skymark Airlines, reportedly joining a string of other firms offering a lifeline to the struggling carrier. Skymark, Japan’s third-largest airline, filed for bankruptcy protection in late January in the face of potentially massive penalties over a cancelled $2.2 billion jet order with Airbus. “This morning, we submitted documents to show our intention to participate in the sponsorship (of Skymark), but we can’t comment further now,” said a spokeswoman for ANA Holdings, the airline’s parent company. Japanese media reported the rescue plan would include codesharing and joint procurement of fuel, while Kyodo News agency said Tokyo-based investment fund Integral has decided to extend a 9.0 billion yen ($76 million) loan to Skymark. Some 20 other firms have so far
applied to back Skymark’s rehabilitation, including leasing firm Orix and major travel agency H.I.S., Kyodo said. Skymark plans to draw up its final list of sponsors this month and will present its rehabilitation plan to Tokyo District Court by May 29, it added. Skymark confirmed last month that it was in talks with ANA and Japan Airlines about code-sharing -when airlines jointly operate a flight route -- as well as with domestic and overseas funds over a possible investment deal. Shares in Skymark tumbled 12.82 percent to close at 34.0 yen. The stock, which has fluctuated wildly since the bankruptcy announcement, is being delisted from the Tokyo exchange next week. Refinery workers strike spreads to biggest US location The first nationwide oil refinery strike in more than 30 years was poised to expand this weekend in a labor dispute that may start having more of an impact on the price consumers pay for gasoline. The United Steelworkers union said Saturday that workers at the largest refinery in the U.S., the Motiva Enterprises refinery in Port Arthur, Texas, started their strike at midnight Friday. Employees at two other refineries and a chemical plant in Louisiana planned to strike at the end of Saturday. The union said in a statement that it expanded the strike that started Feb. 1 at refineries largely in Texas and California because the industry has refused to “meaningfully address” safety issues through good-faith bargaining. The union also wants to discuss staffing levels and is seeking limits on the use of contractors to replace union members in doing daily maintenance work. The union started negotiating a new contract Jan. 21 with
Shell Oil Co., which is serving as the lead company in national bargaining talks. Shell spokesman Ray Fisher said in an email that his company was “extremely disappointed” with the latest development. “We believe this move sets the wrong tone for both parties to move forward and reach an agreement,” Fisher wrote. “We remain committed to continued safe operations and productive negotiations.” United Steelworkers represents about 30,000 workers at refineries, terminals, petrochemical plants and pipelines across the U.S. The strike started with about 3,800 workers at nine refineries and then expanded to include locations in Indiana and Ohio. This latest expansion adds another 1,350 workers to the strike. The workers who were to begin striking Saturday at midnight work at Motiva refineries in Convent and Norco, Louisiana, and a Shell Chemical plant in Norco. The Port Arthur site is a joint venture between Shell and Saudi Refining Inc. It produces more
than 600,000 barrels per day. Oil companies and energy experts have said that improved plant technology and strikecontingency plans should ease the blow to production from these strikes. But economists say pockets of the country served by refineries targeted in these strikes have likely already seen some impact to gas prices. That includes California, which depends more on in-state refineries for its fuel, said Amy Myers Jaffe, an energy economist at the University of California, Davis. “The price of gasoline didn’t soar in California, but it went up a little bit after the strike,” she said. She added that the labor dispute’s influence on price may grow as refineries finish the maintenance work they typically do at this time of year and start preparing to increase gasoline production. “The longer it goes on, then the more likely it is going to influence gas prices,” she said. Through the garbage collection action, they could amass a total of 30 plastic bags of plastic waste conducted along the area of trekking path. According to Ariawan, Buruan village had made cooperation with Bedulu village since some time ago by opening a nature tourist attraction, such as trekking path. The attraction opened was not a competitor, but even a distribution of tourism pie having been opened in Bali, especially in Gianyar. In the matter of Wanayu–Bangunliman trekking tourism development, the local government through the Tourism Agency already knew in line with the village tourism development program. However, the obstacle encountered was the shortage of promotion by county government on the existence of the tourist attraction. Families of 3 missing UK girls urge ‘Please come home!’
LONDON — The families of three missing British schoolgirls believed to have fled to Syria to join the Islamic State extremist group have issued emotional public appeals urging them to come home, as police said Monday they were still searching for them in Turkey. The girls, all 15 to 16 years old and said to be “straight-A students” from the same east London school, disappeared from home Tuesday without leaving any messages. Authorities said they boarded a plane to Istanbul. The relatives of Shamima Begum and Amira Abase, both 15, and Kadiza Sultana, 16, broke down in tears as they spoke of their shock and fear in televised interviews on British media. “We miss you. We cannot stop crying,” said Abase Hussen, Amira’s father, clutching a teddy bear Amira gave to her mother on Mother’s Day. “Please think twice. Don’t go to Syria.” The case has captured wide attention in Britain, where authorities have
warned that the threat is growing from Britons travelling to Syria to fight with Islamic State militants. Officials say at least 500 people have left for Syria, and police say there is a growing trend of young girls and women interested in joining the group. Authorities have been criticized after it emerged that, before the girls disappeared, Begum had had online contact with a fourth girl who left for Syria in 2013 to become a “jihadi bride” — to marry a militant fighter.
All the families said there were no signs that the girls were interested in extremism or of what they were planning. Scotland Yard said its officers were working closely with Turkish authorities in their investigation. Egypt postpones retrial of 2 Al-Jazeera English journalists CAIRO — The retrial of two AlJazeera English journalists who face terror-related charges in a case widely criticized by human rights organizations and media groups has been postponed to March 8. The decision Monday comes after a brief hearing for acting bureau chief Mohamed Fahmy and Egyptian producer Baher Mohammed. They were freed earlier this month to await trial, though they’ve had to check in with police each day. Phased Iran-US nuclear deal taking shape GENEVA — The United States and Iran are shaping the contours of a deal that would initially freeze Tehran’s nuclear program but would allow it to slowly ramp up activities that could be used to make nuclear arms over the last years of the agreement’s duration. Officials from some of the six-power talks with Iran said details still needed to be agreed on, with U.S. and Iranian officials meeting Monday for the third straight day ahead of an end-of-March deadline for a framework agreement. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry joined the negotiations after arriving Sunday. A breakthrough was not expected before Kerry returns to Washington later Monday. But Western officials familiar with the talks cited long-awaited progress on some elements that would have to go into a comprehensive deal. They described the discussions as a moving target, however, meaning changes in any one area would have repercussions for other parts of the negotiation. The idea would be to reward Iran for good behavior over the last years of any agreement, by gradually lifting constraints on its uranium enrichment program imposed as part of a deal that would also would slowly ease sanctions on the Islamic Republic. Iran says it does not want nuclear arms and needs enrichment only for energy, medical and scientific purposes, but the U.S. fears Tehran could re-engineer the program to its other potential use — producing the fissile core of a nuclear weapon. The U.S. initially sought restrictions lasting for up to 20 years; Iran had pushed for less than a decade. Iran could be allowed to operate significantly more centrifuges than the U.S. administration first demanded, though at lower capacity than they currently run. Several officials spoke of 6,500 centrifuges as a potential point of compromise. If the sides agree on 15 years, for instance, the strict controls could be in place for 10 years with gradual lifting over five. Possible easing of the controls could see Iran increasing the number of enriching centrifuges back toward the 10,000 or so it now has operating, and increasing the level of enrichment while keeping it well below levels approaching weapons-grade. The officials represent different countries among the six world powers negotiating with Iran — the United States, Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk publicly about the negotiations. INDONESIA Government to go ahead with death penalty JAKARTA - The Indonesian government will go ahead with the implementation of death penalty on major drug offenders, despite protests from the governments of Australia and Brazil, Vice President Jusuf M. Kalla stated. “We have reiterated many times that we have the sovereignty and will carry out the executions. Remember that the death penalty is based on a court verdict and is not a presidential instruction,” Kalla noted on Monday. He understands if a country lodges a strong protest over the execution of its citizen. Indonesia also protested when its citizens were about to be executed in other countries, he said. However, he was of the viewpoint that the diplomatic incident, in which Brazil delayed the acceptance of credentials of Indonesia’s designated ambassador, was unnecessary. “The executions will be held at the right time,” he noted. Taking a firm stance against drug deal-
ers in January, the government of President Joko Widodo recently executed six convicted drug dealers on death row. Besides one of its own citizens, the convicts were from Malawi, Nigeria, Vietnam, Brazil, and the Netherlands. The executions prompted Brazil and the Netherlands to recall their ambassadors in protest. The government will soon execute 11 other convicts sentenced to death, including nine drug convicts, two of whom are Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran from Australia. The two Australians were members of the “Bali Nine” drug ring, a group of drug traffickers who were arrested on April 17, 2005, in Bali while attempting to smuggle out 8.3 kilograms of heroin worth Rp40 billion to Australia.

President inaugurates special tourism zone
PANDEGELANG - President Joko Widodo inaugurated the special economy zone (KEK) for tourism in Tanjung Lesung, Panimbang Sub-District, Banten, on Monday, an official source informed. During the event, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be signed between the industrial estate developer, Jababeka-BWJ and the investors. The Tanjung Lesung tourism region, which is built in the coastal tourism area, is based on the water city tourism master design in 2020, similar to the one in Venice, Italy. Tanjung Lesung is one of the popular tourism areas in Banten, besides the Carita Beach and other coastal tourism locations. Tanjung Lesung also has the Ujung Kulon National Park (TNUK) located on the westernmost tip of Java, where Mount Krakatoa is also located. The KEK for tourism covers an area of 1.3 thousand hectares, which will have various tourism infrastructure and facilities, including hotels, tourism vocational schools, and others. (ant)
Government declares emergency status due to Riau fires JAKARTA - The government has declared a state of emergency to prevent and handle forest fires in Riau Province, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB). “The step is aimed to anticipate forest and field fires in 2015,” Chief of Public Relations and Information Center of the agency Sutopo Purwo Nugroho stated on Sunday. According to Sutopo, Riau Province bears the brunt of forest fires every year. Based on the hotspot data for the 20062014 period, forest fires occurred twice every year in Riau between February to April and June to October. The disaster continues unabated every year, despite the government having recognized the modus operandi and purpose of starting forest fires and having established regulations to prevent them. Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya has sought assistance from the BNPB to take emergency steps after the potential spread of hotspots and fires in Bengkalis District of Riau Province. “The first effort is that we will carry out cloud-seeding
operations in the near future,” Sutopo affirmed. The agency will also support the construction of canal partitions in peat land areas to prevent the fires from spreading to wider areas. The agency will also deploy a patrol helicopter to monitor the areas and conduct water bombing for a period of three months. Sutopo stated that the BNPB will also deploy several personnel from the central and regional agencies to extinguish the fires. The agency noted that forest and land fires occurring in Riau Province between February and April 2014 caused economic losses worth more than Rp20 trillion. The haze disaster triggered by the fires disrupted around 30 percent of economic activities and led to monetary losses in Riau. The BNPB had spent around Rp164 billion, or one-third of its budget, to deal with the fires nationally. The fires also damaged the environment as more than 21.9 thousand hectares of forest and plantation areas were gutted by the fires. (ant)

Rosberg says best lap was not impressive Nico Rosberg insists he was not too impressed with his performance in Formula 1 testing on Sunday that appeared to send an ominous message about the pace of Mercedes. The German produced a best effort of 1m24.321s on medium tyres, which was just 0.254 seconds slower than Romain Grosjean’s fastest time of the day on super softs. But with there being up to two seconds per lap difference in the performance of the super soft and the medium, it showed that Mercedes could have gone much quicker if it had tried the softer tyre compounds. Although Rosberg’s lap has been highlighted as the first indication of how far ahead Mercedes could be, Rosberg was not too blown away by the performance. Rosberg says best lap was not impressive Nico Rosberg insists he was not too impressed with his performance in Formula 1 testing on Sunday that appeared to send an ominous message about the pace of Mercedes. The German produced a best effort of 1m24.321s on medium tyres, which was just 0.254 seconds slower than Romain Grosjean’s fastest time of the day on super softs. But with there being up to two seconds per lap difference in the performance of the super soft and the medium, it showed that Mercedes could have gone much quicker if it had tried the softer tyre compounds. Although Rosberg’s lap has been highlighted as the first indication of how far ahead Mercedes could be, Rosberg was not too blown away by the performance. LONDON — The families of three missing British schoolgirls believed to have fled to Syria to join the Islamic State extremist group have issued emotional public appeals urging them to come home, as police said Monday they were still searching for them in Turkey. The girls, all 15 to 16 years old and said to be “straight-A students” from the same east London school, disappeared from home Tuesday without leaving any messages. Authorities said they boarded a plane to Istanbul. The relatives of Shamima Begum and Amira Abase, both 15, and Kadiza Sultana, 16, broke down in tears as they spoke of their shock and fear in televised interviews on British media. “We miss you. We cannot stop crying,” said Abase Hussen, Amira’s father, clutching a teddy bear Amira gave to her mother on Mother’s Day. “Please think twice. Don’t go to Syria.” The case has captured wide attention in Britain, where authorities have
warned that the threat is growing from Britons travelling to Syria to fight with Islamic State militants. Officials say at least 500 people have left for Syria, and police say there is a growing trend of young girls and women interested in joining the group. Authorities have been criticized after it emerged that, before the girls disappeared, Begum had had online contact with a fourth girl who left for Syria in 2013 to become a “jihadi bride” — to marry a militant fighter.
All the families said there were no signs that the girls were interested in extremism or of what they were planning. Phased Iran-US nuclear deal taking shape GENEVA — The United States and Iran are shaping the contours of a deal that would initially freeze Tehran’s nuclear program but would allow it to slowly ramp up activities that could be used to make nuclear arms over the last years of the agreement’s duration. Officials from some of the six-power talks with Iran said details still needed to be agreed on, with U.S. and Iranian officials meeting Monday for the third straight day ahead of an end-of-March deadline for a framework agreement. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry joined the negotiations after arriving Sunday. A breakthrough was not expected before Kerry returns to Washington later Monday. But Western officials familiar with the talks cited long-awaited progress on some elements that would have to go into a comprehensive deal. They described the discussions as a moving target, however, meaning changes in any one area would have repercussions for other parts of the negotiation. The idea would be to reward Iran for good behavior over the last years of any agreement, by gradually lifting constraints on its uranium enrichment program imposed as part of a deal that would also would slowly ease sanctions on the Islamic Republic. Iran says it does not want nuclear arms and needs enrichment only for energy, medical and scientific purposes, but the U.S. fears Tehran could re-engineer the program to its other potential use — producing the fissile core of a nuclear weapon. The U.S. initially sought restrictions lasting for up to 20 years; Iran had pushed for less than a decade. Iran could be allowed to operate significantly more centrifuges than the U.S. administration first demanded, though at lower capacity than they currently run. Several officials spoke of 6,500 centrifuges as a potential point of compromise. If the sides agree on 15 years, for instance, the strict controls could be in place for 10 years with gradual lifting over five. Possible easing of the controls could see Iran increasing the number of enriching centrifuges back toward the 10,000 or so it now has operating, and increasing the level of enrichment while keeping it well below levels approaching weapons-grade. The officials represent different countries among the six world powers negotiating with Iran — the United States, Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia. INDONESIA Government to go ahead with death penalty JAKARTA - The Indonesian government will go ahead with the implementation of death penalty on major drug offenders, despite protests from the governments of Australia and Brazil, Vice President Jusuf M. Kalla stated. “We have reiterated many times that we have the sovereignty and will carry out the executions. Remember that the death penalty is based on a court verdict and is not a presidential instruction,” Kalla noted on Monday. He understands if a country lodges a strong protest over the execution of its citizen. Indonesia also protested when its citizens were about to be executed in other countries, he said. However, he was of the viewpoint that the diplomatic incident, in which Brazil delayed the acceptance of credentials of Indonesia’s designated ambassador, was unnecessary. “The executions will be held at the right time,” he noted. Taking a firm stance against drug deal-
ers in January, the government of President Joko Widodo recently executed six convicted drug dealers on death row. Besides one of its own citizens, the convicts were from Malawi, Nigeria, Vietnam, Brazil, and the Netherlands. The executions prompted Brazil and the Netherlands to recall their ambassadors in protest. The government will soon execute 11 other convicts sentenced to death, including nine drug convicts, two of whom are Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran from Australia. The two Australians were members of the “Bali Nine” drug ring, a group of drug traffickers who were arrested on April 17, 2005, in Bali while attempting to smuggle out 8.3 kilograms of heroin worth Rp40 billion to Australia.

PANDEGELANG - President Joko Widodo inaugurated the special economy zone (KEK) for tourism in Tanjung Lesung, Panimbang Sub-District, Banten, on Monday, an official source informed. During the event, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be signed between the industrial estate developer, Jababeka-BWJ and the investors. The Tanjung Lesung tourism region, which is built in the coastal tourism area, is based on the water city tourism master design in 2020, similar to the one in Venice, Italy. Tanjung Lesung is one of the popular tourism areas in Banten, besides the Carita Beach and other coastal tourism locations. Tanjung Lesung also has the Ujung Kulon National Park (TNUK) located on the westernmost tip of Java, where Mount Krakatoa is also located. The KEK for tourism covers an area of 1.3 thousand hectares, which will have various tourism infrastructure and facilities, including hotels, tourism vocational schools, and others. (ant)
Government declares emergency status due to Riau fires JAKARTA - The government has declared a state of emergency to prevent and handle forest fires in Riau Province, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB). “The step is aimed to anticipate forest and field fires in 2015,” Chief of Public Relations and Information Center of the agency Sutopo Purwo Nugroho stated on Sunday. According to Sutopo, Riau Province bears the brunt of forest fires every year. Based on the hotspot data for the 20062014 period, forest fires occurred twice every year in Riau between February to April and June to October. The disaster continues unabated every year, despite the government having recognized the modus operandi and purpose of starting forest fires and having established regulations to prevent them. Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya has sought assistance from the BNPB to take emergency steps after the potential spread of hotspots and fires in Bengkalis District of Riau Province. “The first effort is that we will carry out cloud-seeding
operations in the near future,” Sutopo affirmed. The agency will also support the construction of canal partitions in peat land areas to prevent the fires from spreading to wider areas. The agency will also deploy a patrol helicopter to monitor the areas and conduct water bombing for a period of three months. Sutopo stated that the BNPB will also deploy several personnel from the central and regional agencies to extinguish the fires. The agency noted that forest and land fires occurring in Riau Province between February and April 2014 caused economic losses worth more than Rp20 trillion. The haze disaster triggered by the fires disrupted around 30 percent of economic activities and led to monetary losses in Riau. The BNPB had spent around Rp164 billion, or one-third of its budget, to deal with the fires nationally. The fires also damaged the environment as more than 21.9 thousand hectares of forest and plantation areas were gutted by the fires. (ant)

Japan’s ANA joins bid to rescue bankrupt Skymark Airlines
TOKYO - Japan’s All Nippon Airways on Monday announced plans to help turn around bankrupt Skymark Airlines, reportedly joining a string of other firms offering a lifeline to the struggling carrier. Skymark, Japan’s third-largest airline, filed for bankruptcy protection in late January in the face of potentially massive penalties over a cancelled $2.2 billion jet order with Airbus. “This morning, we submitted documents to show our intention to participate in the sponsorship (of Skymark), but we can’t comment further now,” said a spokeswoman for ANA Holdings, the airline’s parent company. Japanese media reported the rescue plan would include codesharing and joint procurement of fuel, while Kyodo News agency said Tokyo-based investment fund Integral has decided to extend a 9.0 billion yen ($76 million) loan to Skymark. Some 20 other firms have so far
applied to back Skymark’s rehabilitation, including leasing firm Orix and major travel agency H.I.S., Kyodo said. Skymark plans to draw up its final list of sponsors this month and will present its rehabilitation plan to Tokyo District Court by May 29, it added. Skymark confirmed last month that it was in talks with ANA and Japan Airlines about code-sharing -when airlines jointly operate a flight route -- as well as with domestic and overseas funds over a possible investment deal. Shares in Skymark tumbled 12.82 percent to close at 34.0 yen. The stock, which has fluctuated wildly since the bankruptcy announcement, is being delisted from the Tokyo exchange next week. Refinery workers strike spreads to biggest US location The first nationwide oil refinery strike in more than 30 years was poised to expand this weekend in a labor dispute that may start having more of an impact on the price consumers pay for gasoline. The United Steelworkers union said Saturday that workers at the largest refinery in the U.S., the Motiva Enterprises refinery in Port Arthur, Texas, started their strike at midnight Friday. Employees at two other refineries and a chemical plant in Louisiana planned to strike at the end of Saturday. The union said in a statement that it expanded the strike that started Feb. 1 at refineries largely in Texas and California because the industry has refused to “meaningfully address” safety issues through good-faith bargaining. The union also wants to discuss staffing levels and is seeking limits on the use of contractors to replace union members in doing daily maintenance work. The union started negotiating a new contract Jan. 21 with
Shell Oil Co., which is serving as the lead company in national bargaining talks. Shell spokesman Ray Fisher said in an email that his company was “extremely disappointed” with the latest development. “We believe this move sets the wrong tone for both parties to move forward and reach an agreement,” Fisher wrote. “We remain committed to continued safe operations and productive negotiations.” United Steelworkers represents about 30,000 workers at refineries, terminals, petrochemical plants and pipelines across the U.S. The strike started with about 3,800 workers at nine refineries and then expanded to include locations in Indiana and Ohio. This latest expansion adds another 1,350 workers to the strike. The workers who were to begin striking Saturday at midnight work at Motiva refineries in Convent and Norco, Louisiana, and a Shell Chemical plant in Norco. The Port Arthur site is a joint venture between Shell and Saudi Refining Inc. It produces more
than 600,000 barrels per day. Oil companies and energy experts have said that improved plant technology and strikecontingency plans should ease the blow to production from these strikes. But economists say pockets of the country served by refineries targeted in these strikes have likely already seen some impact to gas prices. That includes California, which depends more on in-state refineries for its fuel, said Amy Myers Jaffe, an energy economist at the University of California, Davis. “The price of gasoline didn’t soar in California, but it went up a little bit after the strike,” she said. She added that the labor dispute’s influence on price may grow as refineries finish the maintenance work they typically do at this time of year and start preparing to increase gasoline production. “The longer it goes on, then the more likely it is going to influence gas prices,” she said. While no cases of Ebola have been reported anywhere near North Korea, the country shut its doors on foreign tourists in October with some of the strictest Ebola regulations in the world. North Korean media have suggested Ebola was created by the U.S. military as a biological weapon. Nick Bonner, co-founder of Beijing-based Koryo Tours, said he did not think the decision reflected any deeper problems in the North’s secretive and often enigmatic government, though the news comes amid reports leader Kim Jong Un has called for increased combat readiness and, at a meeting of senior party and military leaders, described tensions on the peninsula as graver than ever before. North Korea has been under increasing pressure from the U.N. over its human rights record and is facing new sanctions from Washington over its alleged involvement in the massive hack attack on Sony Pictures in December. Japan’s farm minister resigns amid political funds questions
TOKYO — Japan’s agriculture minister stepped down Monday following questions over political funding contributions, the latest in a series of such resignations. Koya Nishikawa resigned as head of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries saying he wanted to avoid disruptions to parliamentary proceedings. Questions arose over an alleged 1 million yen ($8,400) donation to a ruling Liberal Democratic Party chapter headed by Nishikawa from a company run by a sugar manufacturers association that had received government subsidies. “No matter how much I explain the situation, if people don’t understand they don’t understand,” Nishikawa told reporters. “There is absolutely no conflict with the law, but people can still use this to tarnish my image.” Nishikawa and other government officials said earlier that he had returned the money. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters that he had resisted, but in the end accepted Nishikawa’s resignation. “He was determined to quit, and I have to respect his wishes. I think it’s really regrettable,” Abe said. He said he was asking lawmaker Yoshimasa Hayashi, who preceded Nishikawa as farm minister before a Cabinet reshuffle in September, to resume the post. Abe praised Nishikawa for working on agricultural reforms and Japan’s efforts toward forming a pan-Pacific trade pact, called the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Japan’s protection of its sugar industry is one of five sensitive areas in negotiations with the U.S. toward the trade agreement. Political funding scandals are a chronic problem in Japanese politics and questions over Nishikawa’s situation surfaced last fall. DECEPTION ISLAND, Antarctica — Earth’s past, present and future come together here on the northern peninsula of Antarctica, the wildest, most desolate and mysterious of its continents.
Clues to answering humanity’s most basic questions are locked in this continental freezer the size of the United States and half of Canada: Where did we come from? Are we alone in the universe? What’s the fate of our warming planet? The first explorers set foot in Antarctica 194 years ago hunting 19th century riches of whale and seal oil and fur, turning tides red with blood. Since then, the fist-shaped continent has proven a treasure chest for scientists trying to determine everything from the creation of the cosmos to how high seas will rise with global warming. “It’s a window out to the universe and in time,” said Kelly Falkner, polar program chief for the U.S. National Science Foundation. For a dozen days in January, in the middle of the chilly Antarctic summer, The Associated Press followed scientists from different fields searching for alien-like creatures, hints of pollution trapped in ancient ice, leftovers from the Big Bang, biological quirks that potentially could lead to better medical treatments, and perhaps most of all, signs of unstoppable melting. And while the sun rarely shines on the long, dark Antarctic winters, nighttime never seems to fall on summer days. While tourists come to Antarctica for its beauty and remoteness, scientists are all business. What they
find could affect the lives of people thousands of miles away; if experts are right, and the West Antarctic ice sheet has started melting irreversibly, what happens here will determine if cities such as Miami, New York, New Orleans, Guangzhou, Mumbai, London and Osaka will have to regularly battle flooding from rising seas. Antarctica “is big and it’s changing and it affects the rest of the planet and we can’t afford to ignore what’s going on down there,” said David Vaughan, science director of the British Antarctic Survey. Often, scientists find something other than what they were looking for. Last year researchers calculated that ice on the western side of the continent was melting faster than
expected. Last month, scientists researching vital geology in that melting were looking a half mile under the ice in pitch dark and found a surprise: fish a half foot (15 centimeters) long and shrimp-like creatures swimming by their cameras. Geologists are entranced by Antarctica’s secrets. On a recent scientific expedition led by Chile’s Antarctic Institute, Richard Spikings, a research geologist at the University of Geneva, wielded a large hammer to collect rock samples in the South Shetlands and the Antarctic Peninsula. Curious members of a penguin colony on Cape Legoupil watched as he pounded on slabs of black granite and diorite rising out of the southern ocean. By the end of the two-week
trip, his colleagues had jokingly begun calling him “Thor.” “To understand many aspects in the diversity of animals and plants it’s important to understand when continents disassembled,” Spikings said. “So we’re also learning about the real antiquity of the Earth and how (continents) were configured together a billion years ago, half a billion years ago, 300 million years ago,” he said, adding that the insights will help him understand Antarctica’s key role in the jigsaw of ancient super continents. As animals evolve, they grow larger WASHINGTON - As animals evolve they tend to get larger over time, researchers concluded in a sweeping study released Friday that tracked thousands of creatures over a half-billion-year period. The mean body size of marine animals, for example, increased 150-fold over the past 542 million years, according to the study published in the US journal Science. “That’s the size difference between a sea urchin that is about two inches (five centimeters) long versus one that is nearly a foot (30 cm) long,” said Noel Heim, a post-doctoral researcher at a lab at Stanford

University’s School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences. “This may not seem like a lot, but it represents a big jump.” Body-size increases have occurred since animals first appeared in the fossil record, some 550 million years ago, according to the study. “We’ve known for some time now that the largest organisms alive today are larger than the largest organisms that were alive when life originated or even when animals first evolved,” said Jonathan Payne, a paleobiologist at the same Stanford school who
led the research. But it was not known if the average size of animals had changed over time and whether this reflected an evolutionary trend in body size, he added. The phenomenon does not apply to all animal lineages, but it was particularly evident in those that were the largest and most diverse in the early evolutionary record, according to the researchers. “For reasons that we don’t completely understand, the classes with large body size appear to be the ones that over time have become differentially more di-
verse,” Payne said. The computer-modelled research reinforces the so-called Cope rule, named after the 19thcentury paleontologist who determined that biological lineages tended to evolve to larger sizes over time. Edward Cope observed that mammals like horses grew larger over generations. Scientists had previously tried to verify Cope’s theory in other groups of animals but the findings were mixed. Corals and dinosaurs seemed to confirm the theory, but birds and insects did not.
As a result, some scientists questioned whether or not the trend in terrestrial animals was a true evolutionary phenomenon. Payne’s team set about to conduct the most comprehensive-ever test of Cope’s theory, compiling a database of more than 17,000 groups, or genera, of marine animals including arthropods and mollusks spanning the last 542 million years. “Nearly 75 percent of all of marine genera in the fossil record and nearly 60 percent of all the animal genera that ever lived are included in our dataset,” Heim said. “Free visa negotiation is underway by considering the aspects of reciprocity, advantages and security,” said Foreign Affairs Ministry’s acting director of Central and East Europe Directory Ibnu Hadi recently. In terms of visa-free arrangement on a reciprocal basis, Hadi mentioned that Russia had implemented it with Thailand, “Then why don’t they do the same with Indonesia?” Since early January 2015, Indonesia has officially waived visa requirements for visitors from Australia, China, Japan, South Korea and Russia wishing to travel to the country. Hadi said Russia is among the countries which have the potential to become one of the major markets for the Indonesian tourism. According to data from the Tourism Ministry, Russia is one of the top twenty sources of tourist arrivals in Indonesia. In 2013, a total of 93,622 Russian nationals visited Indonesia, and in 2014 the number decreased to 88,775. The decrease, Hadi said, was caused by some factors, such as no direct flight from Indonesia to Russia and the sluggish Russian economy which caused Rubel currency to
depreciate against the US dollar. The Russian honorary consular based in Denpasar, Bali, Chairul Nuku Hamka, explained that almost 72 thousand Russian tourists visited Bali Island in 2014. “On average about four to five thousand Russian tourists visit Bali per month,” he said. In 2015, the Indonesian government plans to cooperate with Russia, China, Japan, South Korea, and Australia in implementing visa-free arrangement on a reciprocal basis. The government has set itself the target of raising the number of tourist arrivals to 20 million by 2019 through the visa-free arrangement. However, Ibnu Hadi said not all states used reciprocity in implementing free visa policy and Australia is one of the examples. Nationally, Indonesia recorded 9,435,411 tourist arrivals in 2014, up 7.2 percent from 8,802,129 recorded in 2013. Promoting tourism abroad is part of Indonesian representatives’ economic diplomatic efforts, as proclaimed by President Joko Widodo. Australians on death row ask Indonesia to let them live DENPASAR - Two Australians on death row appealed to Indonesian president Joko Widodo on Sunday to let them live so they can continue helping fellow prisoners in a rehabilitation programme, their brothers said. The kin of drug smugglers Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan made a statement to the media after visiting the pair in Kerobokan prison on Bali island. “We see and hear many prisoners doing courses go on to jobs and better lives. Our brothers’ great wishes for the President is to allow them to continue this help, to rebuild the lives of many more Indonesians for many more years to come,” Michael Chan told reporters outside the prison. The statement comes after Indonesia authorities delayed their execution by up to a month, backtracking on an earlier pledge to put the two men before the firing squad by the end of February. Australia’s government has voiced strong opposition to the planned executions. “Our brothers are very grateful for the support and kindness shown to them by so many people, and we are amazed at their strength and resilience during this stressful time,”
Michael Chan said. “As they reflect on their past they are also thankful to the Indonesian government, the prison officials and many volunteers that have allowed them to create a holistic rehabilitation programme that is now the envy of most prisons worldwide,” he added. DENPASAR - The body of a foreign citizen was discovered on Uluwatu Beach, South Kuta, on Sunday (Feb. 22) and was immediately taken to the mortuary of Sanglah Hospital and examined. Results of the external examination revealed that the body (labeled code 012) was an adult male foreign citizen “wearing cream-colored Billabong surf shorts and a plaid shirt” explained the local officer.
Thee victim’s right arm was tattooed with a tribal motif, his abdomen was black and his hands and legs were covered with abrasions including an open wound on the palm of his right hand, “Allegedly these
wounds were caused by stripping on a rock or some such object” added the officer. It was estimated that the victim had drowned approximately twelve hours before being found. (kmb42)

Governor said nature is angry
DENPASAR – Governor of Bali Made Pastika spoke out about the flooding that occurred over the last few days in Bali and particularly Denpasar. According to the governor, the flooding was caused by the lack of public awareness regarding nature, and also by rainfall, which was indeed very heavy. “Nature is angry because we have have been haphazardly cutting down trees, polluting, litttering , not wanting to plant tress nor pay attention to the sanitation of city gutters,” he said in Denpasar, on Sunday (Feb. 22). Pastika perceived that few people want to clear garbage from the gutters that is clogging the drains. He also called on people to, at the very least not throw garbage into a drains or rivers. Such a
littering can lead to flooding. “Garbage piling up in gutters can cause clogging and lead to flooding. For this reason, I appeal to the people not to litter. Other than causing a dirty enviroenment, it also contributes to flooding,” he said. The Governor also invited all levels of society, ranging from Bali’s provincial to county, municipal,village and hamlets level officials to be more concerned about nature. When flooding happens, people should not complain but should rather think about what has clogged the drain. “Let’s allow for green open spaces and comply with the existing rules if we want nature to be friendly towards us,” he said. Losses from disaster estimated to be in the billions of rupiahs BANGLI - Material losses due to strong winds that hit almost all parts of Bangli on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 22) have begun to be calculated by the Bangli Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD). Although the figures are not exact, losses due to the damage to dozens of houses and temples is estimated to be substancial. “Yesterday, wind storm is estimated to have caused billions of Rupiah in damages,” said Head of the BPBD Bangli, Wayan Karmawan, when asked for his confirmation, on Sunday (Feb. 22). According to Karmawan, estimated losses include damage to houses and public facilities throughout Bangli. He said that the afternoon storm severely damaged at least 50 buildings, including homes, schools, sacred buildings and public facilities. The most severe damage hit three villages in Kintamani, namely Subaya village, Kutuh village and Kubu Salya hamlet at Sukawana village. The three villages were hit by the brunt of the typhoon, with two families having to be evacuated because their homes were destroyed and could no longer be occupied. The BPBD is still collecting
data in order to come up with more precise figures regarding the extent of the damage caused by the typhoon. “Today, we will continue our efforts to deal with the disaster as well as collect date,” he added. In Bangli subdistrict, the strong winds caused a banyan tree at Tamanbali to fall and topple over six stalls in the vicinity. The incident also caused a traffic-jam at the Bangli-Gianyar road section. In Tamanbali, a falling tree hit a house at Sidawa hamlet, and a temple at Uma Anyar village. At Sidembunut hamlet, Cempaga village, a tree toppled over a house. A shrine in the middle courtyard of Kehen Temple, was also damaged by a falling tree. Meanwhile, in Susut subdistrict, tress fell at the junction of Demulih, at the route of Tanggahan Peken-Kayuambua and at Manuk hamlet that caused traffic jam in each of these areas. In addition, at Tanggahan hamlet, Demulih village, the house of a local resident was severely damaged by a fallen tree. At Serokadan hamlet, Apuan village the shrine of a resident was toppled over by tree. At Demulih-Sala, a fallen tree caused a traffic-jam. Then,

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ stays on top Blanchett leaving Sydney LOS ANGELES — “Fifty Shades of Grey” didn’t relinquish control of the box office. Universal’s erotic drama starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan earned $23.2 million at No. 1 in its second weekend at the box office, according to studio estimates Sunday. The adaptation of E.L. James’ bestselling novel earned an additional $68.1 million overseas. Despite the victory, director Sam Taylor-Johnson’s “Fifty Shades of Grey” plummeted a steep 73 percent from its record-breaking $85 million three-day debut over President’s Day weekend. “There was a pent-up demand and excitement for ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ last weekend, so this was its destiny after it broke the box-office record for the biggest opening in February and didn’t have the added bonus of a holiday weekend,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box office firm Rentrak. The action spy film “Kingsman: The Secret Service” and the family friendly “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water” similarly maintained their respective No. 2 and No. 3 spots at the box office in their second weekend.

SYDNEY - Australian Oscar winner Cate Blanchett plans to leave her Sydney home and move to the United States where her artistic director husband Andrew Upton will pursue freelance writing opportunities, a report said Monday. The in-demand actress, who won Oscars for her roles in “The Aviator” and Woody Allen’s “Blue Jasmine”, will make the move later this year. “It was a very hard decision,” Upton, the artistic director of the Sydney Theatre Company, told the Sydney Morning Herald. “But the deciding factor was that our children are still of an age where they can be mobile without disrupting their education too much. “We spent nine years living in England and we loved it. But now we’d like to try America. They have terrific (opportunities in) television there and Cate has a very strong film career there, too, obviously.” Blanchett started out as a theatre actress in Sydney, where she won critical and popular acclaim with a string of successes for the Sydney Theatre Company. She was also joint artistic director with Upton of the company from 2008 to 2012 and is patron of the Australian Film Institute.
Upton said he wanted to return to writing while in the United States. “I want to get back into the freelance writing lifestyle, which I have been missing,” he said. “I am interested in writing for television and film, as well as theatre.” (afp)
