There had been no word from Donna Manning since her workplace came crumbling down Tuesday during a magnitude-6.3 quake that has killed at least 75 people and left some 300 missing. But she was tough, her 18-year-old daughter Lizzy insisted through tears, a “Superwoman” who would do anything to survive. Then a police officer approached. She knelt before Lizzy and her 15year-old brother Kent in the rain.
And she began to speak: “I have some horrible news ...” The teens’ faces crumpled, and their father wrapped them in an embrace. There was no hope left for anyone trapped inside the building, the officer said gently. Donna, a television presenter — their Superwoman — was gone. It was one of the darkest moments of Wednesday’s desperate hunt for any signs of life in the twisted rubble in the city of Christchurch, as Prime Minister John Key declared the
quake a national disaster and analysts estimated its cost at up to $12 billion. Hundreds of troops, police and emergency workers raced against time and aftershocks that threatened to collapse more buildings. They picked gingerly through the ruins, poking heat-seeking cameras into gaps between tumbles of bricks and sending sniffer dogs over concrete slabs. More teams rushed in from Australia, Asia, the United States and Britain, along with a military field hospi-
tal and teams to help repair power, water and phone lines that were damaged in all corners of the city of some 350,000 people.The news was grim at the Canterbury Television building, a seven-story concrete-and-glass structure that housed the regional TV network where Manning was a morning presenter and other businesses, including an English language school used by young visitors from Japan and South Korea.

Bali News Men have greater potential to be affected by coronary heart problem Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Over the past ten years, coronary heart is recorded as the highest cause of death nationally. Everyone can be affected by coronary heart if he does not make a healthy lifestyle during their lives. According to the Division Head of Cardiology and Vascular Medicine, School of Medicine Udayana University/Sanglah Hospital, I.G.N. Putra Gunadhi, when met on Tuesday (Feb 22), men had a greater potential to be affected by coronary heart disease than women. In terms of age factor, men potentially affected by coronary heart were at the age of 40 years and above, women at the age of 50 and over or when the woman entered the menopause period. Why were women potentially affected by coronary heart disease at menopause? This could happen because while in childbearing age women still produced estrogen hormone which prevented the formation of plaque in the heart. Gunadhi explained that coronary heart disease was caused by narrowing of coronary arteries due to plaque formation in these vessels. Formation of plaque made the blood flow supplying food and oxygen to the heart disrupted so it resulted in heart attack. “Plaque is not formed in a year or two years but in a long time, from childhood to adulthood in accordance with one’s lifestyle,” said Gunadhi. Risk factors that could cause plaque as the cause of coronary heart, according to Gunadhi, were the age, hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol, smoking, lack of exercise, stress and heredity. “Unhealthy eating patterns can later on affect the high cholesterol levels and ultimately lead the formation of plaque causing the coronary heart disease,” said Gunadhi. There were typical symptoms for patients with coronary heart disease, such as pain in the middle or left chest and then spread like pins and needles in left arm and neck as being choked and having cold sweat. Men over the age of 40 years and women of fifty years with risk factors having these symptoms
should be wary and immediately check the heart condition. Coronary heart turned dangerous because it could cause death either with or without early symptoms. Someone who looked healthy might suddenly have a coronary heart attack and eventually died. According to Gunadhi, if percentage of the plaque formation in coronary heart was not high or about 30 percent, it usually had no symptoms. “However, if patient takes an extreme activity or beyond the habit or he is in unfit condition and then forced to perform activities like extreme sports, this plaque can rupture and form blood clots that trigger heart attacks,” said Gunadhi. The more harmful case was if the heart indicated a rhythm disturbance called ventricular fibrinase. Ninety percent of people who had experienced the symptom died. Meanwhile, plaque in coronary arteries, according to Gunadhi, could not be eliminated. Indeed there had been a treatment used to flatten the plaque for smooth blood flow and drugs to lighten the cardiac activities. But, all these treatments were very expensive. On that account, preventing before falling sick was the best advice for this disease. The coronary heart disease was caused by unhealthy lifestyle and the only way to prevent the disease was by adopting a healthy lifestyle. Then, keeping diet, no stress and no smoking were a must. “At least, have an exercise for three times a week. The easiest one is by taking 30-minute brisk walk,” said Gunadhi. Cases of coronary heart disease in the community, continued Gunadhi, showed an increasing rate from year to year. On average, Emergency Room of Sanglah Hospital received 10-15 patients a day. “There is the possibility that coronary heart disease is suffered by younger age. As a case, there was male patient of 35 years who has been hit by this disease,” he added. (kmb24)

Few tourists spend Nyepi holiday in Bali Mangupura (Bali Post)—
The Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants Association (PHRI) of Badung Chapter responded the appeal of Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI Bali) to suppress the activity in hotel during Nyepi. Business perpetrators coalesced into the association stated that Nyepi package heavily promoted within the past two weeks would not significantly boost the occupancy rate. Given, the Nyepi Day was only regarded as regular holiday by tourists. “Tourists just assume Nyepi as a day to meditate. They know about Nyepi where people should not go out and not allowed to turn on lighting. Their attitude toward Nyepi is different from their response to welcome Christmas and New Year holidays,” said Chairman of PHRI Badung IGN Rai Suryawijaya, Tuesday (Feb 22). Suryawijaya predicted the occupancy rates of hotels in Badung on Nyepi celebration would only reach 70 percent. This could be
seen from the trend of occupancy rates in the recent years. The celebration falling on the upcoming Saturday (March 5), would not significantly contribute to the occupancy rate of hotels in Bali, especially in Badung. “Only few tourists are staying in hotel just to luxuriate in the moment of Nyepi. Meanwhile, Nyepi itself is not an exceptional attraction for tourists,” he said. Nevertheless, tourists would not be checking out earlier because of Nyepi. Likewise, travelers would not accidentally come swarming to Bali just to experience the moments of Nyepi. “So, the situation is as usual, not crowded and not quiet,” he observed. PHRI Badung, as recognized by Suryawijaya, had informed all members to have lighting as needed. In addition, the hotels belonging to PHRI members were also asked not to open a restaurant located on the side of a highway. “If it should open a restaurant, simply open the one located within
the hotel, not on the roadside. Lighting in use must also be minimized, so as not to disrupt the implementation process of Nyepi,” he said. In the meantime, Public Relations Manager of Aston Hotel & Convention Center, Denpasar, Adina Ashrinintya, stated that her party took advantage of the Nyepi celebration as one of the tourist attractions to boost the occupancy rate of the hotel. “So far, there are still few tourists both foreign and local staying in hotel during the Nyepi festivity. Therefore, we offer a Nyepi package to attract tourists,” she said. According to her, based on previous experiences, tourists rarely spent Nyepi holiday in Bali. Although it had been already offered, it was unlike the celebration of Idul Fitri, Christmas and New Year. Again, Foreigner Robbed
Bag Taken in Candidasa Amlapura (Bali Post) –
After two cases of robbing bags and other robberies from tourists in Karangasem, last Tuesday (22/2) another reported as victim in Candidasa, a German grandma, Sysilvaine Madeleine Odile (78) got robbed after being hit on the head and having her eye stabbed. Puri Bagus Candidasa Hotel worker, Wayan Suastika (35), reported his guest was robbed last Sunday (20/2) around 3 pm. In Karangasem Police Headquarters he stated he just knew it actually happened so there’s lateness in reporting it. At first victim was found wounded in front of the hotel and so was brought to IRD Karangasem Hospital. The medical team there then gave up and brought her to BIMC Hospital, Denpasar. When found, victim couldn’t be questioned as she is weak. When witness took care of victim in Denpasar, then there was an information that victim was hit and robbed. Karangasem Public Relation Police Commissioner Wayan Wirata as permitted by Karangasem Police, confirmed has received witness’ report. Police have taken further investigation yet it can’t be assured that victim was actually robbed knowing there is no on location witness yet. Meanwhile victim is still intensively treated and can’t be asked for statements yet.
It is stated that victim is experiencing internal bleeding from the nose and ears. Both eyeballs are swollen suspected to have been stabbed by robbers. Suastika stated that she was on her own and enjoying the afternoon atmosphere in a quiet road which then an unknown person approached her and hit her from the back of her head. To remain unknown, robbers than stabbed both victim’s eyes and took the little bag victim has been carrying. It is not known yet what was taken and how much loss is experienced as no statements can be given yet from victim. Last month a woman tourist reported have been pushed and robbed around Kubu when going by a protocol road riding a bike in the afternoon. Then there were two tourist couple who’s staying in their villa at Jasri Baech, Karangasem robbed at night time. One of the victim experienced wounds when attacked by robbers while he was defending himself and a number of cash was taken. Until now theses cases still can’t be revealed yet by the police. (013)
Government Vehicles Emission Examine Denpasar (Bali Post)-
One of the contributors to air pollution was vehicles gas emission. What’s more the number of vehicles passing by the streets is increasing threatens the air to be even more polluted. Which so it needs to be controlled and supervised so it won’t go over its limit. To minimize so Denpasar City Living Environment Board (BLH) last Tuesday (22/2) held an emission examination around Sugianyar Street targeting red plated vehicles. The Head of the Baord, A.A. Bagus Sudharsana, stated this has been done before on three locations which are Mahendradata Street, Raya Sesetan Street and Hayam Wuruk Street. the hundreds red plated two and four wheels vehicles were all examined using Kapelex and Branbee equipment. Most of them passed the examination.
To pass it so vehicles made before 2007 its CO contain has to reach 4,5 percent while those made above 2007 has to contain 1,5 percent, “And for solar fueled four wheels vehicle has to reach 7,0 percent and for two wheels its limit would be 5,5 percent.” It is not hard to reach this numbers as long the owner routinely checked up their vehicle. A well machine has a smooth sound. A not optimal functioning plug, vacuum holed or mixed fuels cause high gas emission besides a very dirty oil machine which blocks the machine and comes out through the exhaust. He also stated those which did not pass is given warning to the institution who owns the cars. The ecosystem condition in Bali such as beach shores, lakes and forests, came to a worrying situation according to Udayana University Rector, Prof. DR. dr. I Made Bakta, Sp.PD (KHOM) last Tuesday (22/ 2). This is caused by the uncontrollable fast growing economy which comes to damage the environment, “Bali’s environment needs to anticipate as the small Bali with high population causing its support sources used to the max.” Mada Bakta explained that the exploitation of forests and changing functions on land causing open spaces disappear. Empty Banners Blinding Singaraja (Bali Post) –
In a number of strategic locations at Singaraja City it has been filled by empty banners with no image or promotion message, just white zinc blinding eyes. The situation caused some vehicle users to complain especially those facing protocol roads. For example two banners that placed in the entrance to Buleleng Harbor. When the two reflected the sunlight it is blinding road users around it.
An information stated that these banners are owned by an advertising company which usually rented to product owners with variety prices depends on where and how big the banner is. Yet it is suspected no one has rented them after the previous rents period has finished and left empty. Gung De who lives in Supratman Street, Singaraja, suggested having these empty banners to have public services messages so it won’t blind
road users and damaging the city’s view, “These banners owner should have an initiative to put up social messages to the people before it is going to be rented again.” What’s more worrying in the east of the empty banner, exactly next to Buleleng River bridge there has been a damaged advertising board. JERUSALEM – Two Iranian warships sailed from the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean on Tuesday, the first such trip in at least three decades, eliciting Israeli charges that Tehran is seeking to dominate the Middle East. The vessels headed toward Syria, but were expected to remain in international waters as they passed the Israeli coast. The voyage took the frigate Alvand and the supply Kharq close to NATO’s southern flank and could further destabilize the Middle East, a region already reeling from an unprecedented wave of anti-government rebellions. In Tehran, the deputy commander of the Iranian navy said that Iran has “suprised the Zionist regime” with the journey to the Mediterranean. “The world arrogance (U.S.) should know that the army of the Islamic Republic is fully prepared to defend the holy ideals of the Islamic Republic and this readiness grows day by day,” Brigadier-General Abdolrahim Mousavi told the official Iranian news agency IRNA. In Washington, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley refused to say whether the transit in and of itself, or the Egyptian decision to allow it, were provocations. “We will be watching carefully to see where these ships go and the implications of that,” he said. Egypt is the gatekeeper of the strategic canal which links the Red Sea and the Mediterranean. Egypt’s new military rulers, who took power from ousted President Hosni Mubarak on Feb. 11, appeared to have no choice but to allow the passage. An international convention regulating shipping says the canal must be open “to every vessel of commerce or of war.” Iranian warships have not passed through the Suez Canal since 1979. In sending warships to the Mediterranean now, Iran was asserting itself as a regional power and testing whether Egypt’s new rulers will stick to the proWestern line of the Mubarak government. Some said the voyage also signals that Iran is ready to come to the aid of regional allies, including Syria and Iranian proxies Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denounced Iran late Tuesday, but he did not refer directly to the two warships. “Iran seeks to exploit the earthquake” now shaking the region, he said. “It is seeking to bring down democratic reform. It is seeking to prevent it. It is seeking to shut down the lights and create another era of darkness like the one we have in Tehran.” Vice Premier Silvan Shalom accused Iran of trying to dominate the entire region.

BEIJING – An online campaign has urged people in 13 Chinese cities to rally every Sunday to press for government transparency and free expression, following a call last week for Middle East-style protests. The new call, posted this week on a blog run by overseas-based human rights website Boxun.com, appeared to be from the same group behind a mysterious web campaign for protests last Sunday that echoed those rocking the Arab world. The earlier call sparked a heavy police turnout at designated protest sites in Beijing and other cities. The events appeared lightly attended, however, and free of major incidents. “What we need to do now is to put pressure on the Chinese ruling (Communist) party,” said the renewed appeal. “If the party does not conscientiously fight corruption and accept the supervision of the people, then will it please exit the stage of history.” Apparently attempting to make a statement without falling foul of China’s security forces, participants were urged not to take overt action but to merely show up for the 2:00 pm “strolling” protests. “We invite every participant to stroll, watch, or even just pretend
to pass by. As long as you are present, the authoritarian government will be shaking with fear,” it said. China’s government has indicated growing unease over the unrest in the Arab world, heavily censoring or blocking media reports and online discussion of the upheaval, which has toppled presidents in Tunisia and Egypt. The call for weekly “Jasmine rallies” — a reference to Tunisia’s “Jasmine Revolution” — was labelled as an “open letter” to China’s rubberstamp parliament. The National People’s Congress opens its annual session on March 5. Defiant Gaddafi vows to die as martyr, fight revolt Reuters TRIPOLI – A defiant Muammar Gaddafi said he was ready to die “a martyr” in Libya, vowing to crush a growing revolt which has seen eastern regions break free of his 41-year rule and brought deadly unrest to the capital. Swathed in brown robes, Gaddafi seethed and banged a podium on Tuesday outside one of his residences that was damaged in a 1986 U.S. air strike aiming to kill him. Next to him stood a monument of a fist crushing a U.S. fighter jet. “I am not going to leave this land. I will die here as a martyr,” Gaddafi said on state television, refusing to
bow to calls from some of his own ministers, soldiers and protesters who braved a fierce crackdown to clamor for him to go. Protests in Libya’s neighbors Egypt and Tunisia toppled entrenched leaders, but Gaddafi said he would not be forced out by the rebellion sweeping through his oil-producing nation of 7 million stretching from the Mediterranean into the Sahara. “I shall remain here defiant,” said Gaddafi, who has ruled the mainly desert country with a mixture of populism and tight control since taking power in a military coup in 1969. In New York, the U.N. Security Council condemned the use of violence and called for those responsible for attacks on civilians to be held to ac-

The turmoil in Libya, which pumps nearly 2 percent of world oil output, sent Brent crude prices above $108 a barrel to a 2 1/2 year high and triggered Wall Street’s worst day since August as investors dumped stocks. The White House said global powers must speak with one voice in response to the “appalling violence” in Libya. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Washington would take “appropriate steps” in time. But Washington has little leverage over Libya, a U.S. adversary for most of Gaddafi’s rule until it agreed in 2003 to abandon a weapons-of-mass-destruction program and moved to settle claims from the 1988 Lockerbie bombing.
Gaddafi was unrepentant. Protesters were “rats and mercenaries” who deserved the death penalty, he said in the rambling, 75-minute speech. Gaddafi said he would call on people to “cleanse Libya house by house” unless protesters surrendered. He urged supporters to take to the streets. “All of you who love Muammar Gaddafi, go out on the streets, secure the streets, don’t be afraid of them ... In a sign of his growing isolation, Libyan diplomats at the U.N. and several countries broke ranks and urged foreign nations to help stop the violence. Peru, which does not have a Libyan embassy but does have an ambassador in Tripoli, suspended diplomatic relations with Libya “for as long as violence against the population continues”. Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

4 American hostages killed by pirates off Somalia Associated Press Writer
NAIROBI, Kenya – A U.S. Navy destroyer was shadowing a hijacked yacht with four Americans aboard when a pirate fired a rocket-propelled grenade, followed by bursts of gunfire. U.S. special forces scrambled onto the occupied vessel only to find the four Americans fatally wounded. The yachting enthusiasts from California and Washington killed off the coast of East Africa on Tuesday were the first Americans slain by Somali pirates since a wave of attacks began six years ago. One of the American couples had been sailing around the world since 2004 handing out Bibles. The deaths of the four travelers, all in their late 50s or 60s, appeared to underscore an increasingly brutal and aggressive shift by pirates in their treatment of hostages. Killing hostages “has now become part of our rules,” said a pirate who identified himself as Muse Abdi. He referred as a turning point to last week’s sentencing of a pirate to 33 years in prison for the 2009 attack on the U.S. cargo vessel the Maersk Alabama — just two days before the
hijacking. “From now on, anyone who tries to rescue the hostages in our hands will only collect dead bodies,” Abdi said. “It will never, ever happen that hostages are rescued and we are hauled to prison.” Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton strongly condemned the killing of the Americans as “deplorable,” saying in a statement the slayings underscored the need for international cooperation in fighting the scourge of piracy in waters off the Horn of Africa. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said it handed out some 6,000 dust masks to residents of Irosin, one of three towns affected by the ashfall, including nearly 500 people at an evacuation centre there. The health ministry meanwhile distributed face masks in the nearby town of Bulan, where a two-year-old boy died from an asthma attack aggravated by ashfalls caused by the eruption, it said in a statement. Government doctors are checking the medical condition of people in affected areas, it added. Volcanic ash can cause nose, throat, eye and skin irritation as well as contaminate tap water, while prolonged exposure can cause lung disease, according to the health ministry. RI, Singapore agree to step up intelligence cooperation Antara JAKARTA - The Indonesian National Defence Forces (TNI) and Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) have agreed to step up cooperation including intelligence to secure the two countries‘ territorial waters. At TNI-SAF annual staff meeting here on Tuesday, TNI Chief of Staff for General Affairs Vice Marshal Edy Harjoko said the Indonesia-Singapore Joint Coordinated Committee (ISJCC) had successfully overcome piracy around Philips Strait and Singapore Strait. Yet the success served as a challenge for both TNI and SAF to make constant efforts to ensure “zero incidents” in the two straits, he said. “Therefore, the intelligence communities need to increase their role to overcome the incident as early as possible,” he said. He instructed the Maritime Security Task Force (MSTF) and Police Coast Guard (PCG) to always work hard to step up security by among others updating intelli-
gence data in support of the operations. He further said the civic mission conducted by TNI and SAF since a few years ago also had contributed to the success of both sides‘ coordinated patrol for sea security. “Basically, all illegal activities at sea are planned on land. That`s why, as one of the efforts to prevent crimes at sea both sides conduct civic mission which is also aimed at promoting the living standard of local people,” he said. President, US parliament discuss democracy in Egypt Antara
JAKARTA - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and the United States Parliament discussed the democracy in Egypt here on Wednesday. In a one-hour meeting with a delegation of US Parliament led by David Drier at the presidential office, both sides discussed a possibility of Indonesia to play its important role for the future of Egyptian democracy. Presidential spokesman for foreign affairs Teuku Faizasyah said the US Parliament at the meeting with President Yudhoyono also asked about Ahmadiyah case. Thus to the delegation of US Parliament, Teuku said the Indonesian government was trying to find a win-win solution with Ahmadiyah and to apply an unequivocal legal process to anyone engaged in violent acts. Meanwhile, David Drier said after the meeting with President Yudhoyono that Indonesia as a democratic and the world‘s most populous Muslim country had a 12-year transitional experience from authoritarian country to democratic country. Dries said that although there were a lot of differences between Indonesia and Arab countries, he expressed optimism that Arab countries would take a lesson from Indonesian democracy. “Latest development in Egypt was mentioned at the meeting and how the two countries cooperate in directing the transition process from Indonesia‘s experience. In various experiences and opportunities, Indonesia and the United States will play their enthusiastic roles,” Drier said. Cikeusik incident was planned, organized Antara
JAKARTA - Temporary findings from National Commission for Human Rights (Komnas HAM) showed the recent sectarian violence which happened in Cikeusik subdistrict, Banten province, was planned and organized by certain people. The statement was made by Nurcholis, a member of Komnas HAM, here on Wednesday at a hearing with members of Commission VIII of the House of Representatives. Nurcholis said he had visited the location to interview local government and the victims. Based on investigation in the location, he said, there was an indication that police‘s intelligence data was weak and that the attack was done by outsiders, not by locals. “Next week we will send a team to Banten to meet with district police chief and provincial police chief,” he said adding that he would also meet with people who allegedly launched the attack. Nurcholis said Komnas HAM would also investigate whether onduty security personnel at the time had actively tried to secure the situation or not.
A series of attacks on Ahmadiyah religious sect followers and their properties have occurred in some parts of Indonesia over the past two years. The latest incident happened in Umbulan village Cikeusik subdistrict, Pandeglang district, Banten province, on February 6, killing three people. Earlier, the Indonesian Council of Ulemas (MUI) stated the government must show a firm stance on Ahmadiyah to halt tension in the society. “The root cause of the recent Cikeusik incident was first of all triggered by the society members` dissatisfaction with the government`s weak stance on the Ahmadiyah problem,” MUI`s Chairman Sahal Mahfudh said. He said MUI had actually issued a fatwa against misleading Ahmadiyah . “Now, it is up to the government to take any necessary action. It is wrong
if MUI has involved too much in the government`s authority,” he said. Sahal Mahfudh said the state‘s firm regulation on the Ahmadiyah had firmly been revealed by Law No 1/1965 on the prevention of misuse of and/or religious blasphemy. The government had also issued a joint decree of three ministers regarding the Ahmadiyah question, he said. However, as a result of the government‘s lenient stance and the lack of firmness to ban this sect, as mandated by Law No 1/1965, several groups of people in the society had lost their patience. They then made their own decision by punishing the Ahmadiyah followers who were free to propagate their misleading teachings with their own, he said.

Thus, Prof. Dr. Wayan Dibia, a professor of the Indonesia Institute of Arts (ISI) Denpasar, revealed during the preparatory meeting of Bali Arts Festival 2011 in the office of Bali Cultural Services, Tuesday (Feb 22). There were some excellent programs expected to give something different from the previous Bali Arts Festival, namely the art of reconstruction, revitalization and innovation. According to him, the art of construction included the art that formerly existed, but it was no longer active. Such an art was rebuilt, and then displayed in the BAF. Meanwhile, the art of revitalization was to boost the existing art so it could last sustainably. Then, the art of innovation posed a new art form obtained from the development of prior arts. “For instance, we will adopt a new format to our Arja operetta and Mask as artistic innovation. We are going to perform this innovative art in the third and the fourth week of the BAF 2011. Arja operetta and Mask will be performed in contemporary genre. Storyline is not necessarily taken from the Chronicle. We
will try to perform Arja in two hours— intensive-content without losing the essence,” said Dibia. By doing so, there would be something new that could be appreciated by the community. Besides, the 33rd Bali Arts Festival would also strive to display the uniqueness of art presented by regencies/city, so people got something different from what they had ever witnessed. “We hope that BAF can serve as a venue for the creation of new things other than preserving and evoking the existing arts. That was the reason why preparatory meetings of BAF had been held with the hope the implementation would run in accordance with expectation. Promotion of the 33rd BAF had also been carried out earlier, so that its echoes would be wider. “In this regard, we have designed a branding of the 33rd Bali Arts Festival,” he said. From One Green to Some other Greens Advancement of science of technology does not answer all problems encountered by human life. In agriculture, for instance, modern farmers can now have boosted the quantity of production, even in multiple amounts. On the one hand, it’s a great success but on the other hand it still leaves a problem on the decline of environmental and human health quality. Green revolution occurred between 1943 and 1970s through the implementation of chemical fertilizer and good irrigation system has conjured up the rice production. In short term, it became an efficacious medicine to resolve the famine in tropical countries. Few decades later, it had an impact on the reduction of environmental quality, like pollution in water, land and others. Apart from the impact on the environment, it was also had an impact on human health like the rise of some new cancers. Realizing these facts, now Bali has an initiative to become a green province and implement the integrated farming system (Simantri). Hopefully, implementation of the system could realize the Bali Organic plan and consequently minimize the environmental destruction. Green province campaign includes some aspects, namely green culture, green economy and Bali green and clean. Green culture is intended to change the societal behavior in managing their waste management and environment. Green economy hints that all economic activities should be in the eco-friendly orientation. These two aspects will empty out into the initiative of Bali Organic.

Through breeding local cows, for instance, farmers are expected to get maximal benefits. Other than increasing the number of cows, they will be able to take advantage the cow dung and urine for organic fertilizers. In the long run, it will reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Of course, this endeavor will reduce the production cost that should be spent by farmers and at the same time increase the quality of rice as well as improve the environmental quality. As a matter of fact, simple practice of this concept could have been seen around 1970s. Farmers using cows to cultivate their land could also take advantage of their cow dung. It was spread out onto the rice field and its efficacy could last for at least for two planting seasons. In terraced rice field, it could uniquely be managed by establishing a cowshed in the upper stream. Later on, the collected dry cow dung was channeled to rice field through the water gutter. However, since being urged by the demand to multiple the rice production, farmers left the method. Introduction of hand tractor and chemical fertilizers gradually replaced the role of cows. The new method was expected to accelerate the land cultivation process. As consequence, cows were only serving as ‘family saving’ for farmers. So implementing the chemical fertilizers and pesticide means to oppose God and will result in bad impact to human. Cow dung and urine as well as compost are three beneficial ingredients being enough for farming both on irrigated and non-irrigated land. By doing so, he claims it is a ‘zero budget of natural farming’ as in his trilogy book entitled Philosophy of Spiritual Farming. To sum up, all movements at least refer to the same keywords namely green, natural and eco-friendly concept. They denote milestone of new awareness on modern human to reorientate their food production in quality. This awareness has triggered the orientation in the quality of life and environment. Hopefully, the aspiration of Bali as Green Province and other green concepts could be realized supported by entire community based on their awareness of a better quality life! (BTN/punia)
Stuffed Pancake Roll (Dadar Gulung) Ingredients * Stuffing 2 cups fresh-grated coconut * 10 Tbs. grated Java dark brown sugar * 1 Tbs. granulated sugar * 1 3-inch cinnamon stick, broken in half * ¼ tsp. salt
Directions Stuffing: Mix the grated coconut, grated Java dark brown sugar and granulated sugar, cinnamon and ½ tsp salt together. Fry the mixture in a dry pan over medium/low heat, constantly stirred for approximately 5 minutes, or until the mixture is dry. Remove the cinnamon stick, and set it aside.
Ingredients * Pancake 1 cup rice flour * ½ cup cornstarch * 1¾ cups coconut milk * ½ tsp. salt * 1 egg, beaten * 3 drops green food coloring (optional) * Vegetable oil
Directions Pancake: Mix the rice flour, cornstarch, coconut milk, ½ tsp. salt, green food coloring and egg into a smooth batter. Lightly oil an 8-inch frying pan, and pour 3 tablespoon of the batter into the pan. Make sure the pan is equally covered with the batter so it becomes a thin layer pancake. Fry for one minute, turn the pancake over and fry for another minute. Remove and set aside. Place 2 Tbs. of the coconut mixture on the near edge of the pancake. BUSINESS BOJ upbeat on economy, exports show seasonal dip Reuters
TOKYO/AOMORI – Bank of Japan Deputy Governor Hirohide Yamaguchi said the country’s economy will soon pull out of its torpor, despite a near-stalling of export growth in January, but warned that risks remain from rising commodity prices. Annual export growth slowed to its weakest pace in more than a year in January as shipments to China lost steam before the Lunar New Year, but economists said the central bank’s forecast for an export-led recovery remained intact as underlying demand overseas was still strong. “Exports were weaker than expected but the overall trade data does not alter the scenario that the economy is emerging from a lull in the January-March quarter,” said Yoshimasa Maruyama, economist at Itochu Corporation in Tokyo. Yamaguchi, a career central banker and a close aide to Governor Masaaki Shirakawa, said Japan was making progress toward an end to deflation with annual rises in consumer prices seen accelerating toward the year starting in April 2012. Still, the government and the central bank are unlikely to draw much comfort as turmoil in Libya and a recent spike in commodity prices cloud the outlook. Yamaguchi also warned against excessive optimism over the U.S. economy. “Exports are resuming an uptrend,” Yamaguchi said in a speech to business executives in Aomori, northern Japan, on Wednesday. “I expect Japan’s economy to soon emerge from a lull and resume a moderate recovery path on strong overseas growth.” His comments are in line with the BOJ’s assessment last week that Japan’s economy was gradually emerging from a slowdown and heading toward a moderate recovery. Yamaguchi warned that there was a chance that financial markets’ optimistic view on the U.S. economy may be reversed given the huge balance sheet adjustment it needs to go through. His comments “suggest optimism about the economy from a short-term viewpoint but he rather stressed downside risks for the mediumterm, especially about the U.S. economy,” said Seiji Shiraishi, chief economist at HSBC Securities Japan. “The BOJ is examining how such risks will develop. While the economic cycle is recovering, if downside risks materialize, there is a possibility the BOJ will expand its easing steps,” Shiraishi said. The central bank is closely monitoring oil prices, which have soared due to spreading unrest in the Middle East and North Africa, but it sees no reason yet to alter its forecasts, Yamaguchi later told reporters. Should this trend continue, it could stymie monetary policy because it could both harm growth and possibly hasten an exit from defla-
tion. “Commodity-driven inflation exacerbates terms of trade and weighs on economy, but if commodity price hikes don’t accelerate that would keep core consumer prices from approaching levels that the BOJ sees as desirable,” said Azusa Kato, economist at BNP Paribas in Tokyo. “The BOJ will stand pat on monetary policy for foreseeable future, regardless of commodity prices.” Japan’s exports in January rose 1.4 percent from a year earlier, the lowest growth since November 2009 and much slower than the median forecast for a 7.4 percent annual increase, Finance Ministry data showed. Shipments to China, Japan’s largest trading partner, increased 1.0 percent from a year earlier, a small fraction of the 20.1 percent annual increase in the previous month and also the smallest increase since October 2009. The slowdown was mainly due to the Lunar New Year holidays in the first week of February, which are observed in China and some other Asian countries including South Korea, a ministry official said. In comparison, South Korea’s exports to China rose 15.4 percent in January. While the number, reported earlier this month, was far stronger than Japan’s, it was also the lowest growth since October 2009 and well below the more than 40 percent overall growth. “I think this is a temporary phenomenon,” said Yoshikiyo Shimamine, chief economist at Dai-Ichi Life Research Institute in Tokyo. “Exports of microchips and other electronics devices to Asia slowed substantially, but the inventory situation is improving. U.S. consumer sentiment seems to be picking up as well.” The trade balance showed a deficit of 471.4 billion yen ($5.67 billion), its first deficit in 22 months. That compared with the median forecast for a 60.0 billion yen surplus. The purchasing managers index for January lends some support to optimism over exports, showing new export orders grew for the first time in four months. The BOJ last week raised its assessment of the economy, signaling that no imminent monetary easing is on the horizon. Still, the central bank is set to maintain its ultra-easy policy and keep interest rates in a range of zero to 0.1 percent unless a rise in consumer prices of around 1 percent seems likely. The BOJ last year cut interest rates effectively to zero and set up a fund to buy assets ranging from government bonds to private debt, aiming to help the economy and end deflation.

TOKYO – Surging oil prices due to political turmoil in the Middle East spell “very, very big challenges” for airlines, International Air Transport Association chief Giovanni Bisignani said on Wednesday. The political unrest that has swept the key oil-producing Middle East and North African region, including Libya, Bahrain, Yemen and Iran, has stoked fears of disruption to global crude supplies and led to price spikes. The troubles have kept oil at two-year highs, with Brent North Sea crude for delivery in April up 22 cents at $106 a barrel. New York’s main contract, light sweet crude for April, rose four cents to $95.46. “Oil is a big problem because it could change completely the picture” for the sector, said the chief of IATA, which represents some 230 airlines comprising 93 percent of scheduled international air traffic. Bisignani said high energy prices could turn what had been “forecast to be a profitable year into a very complicated year”. Airlines are facing “very very big challenges” due to the high oil prices, he told a press conference in Tokyo.
IATA recently predicted passenger traffic would grow for the second consecutive year after its crisis-driven drop in 2008, but it said net profits for airlines as a whole would fall 40 percent to $9.1 billion in 2011. The forecast was based on an oil price of $84 per barrel for Brent crude. Libya was gripped by turmoil as leader Moamer Kadhafi on Tuesday ordered his supporters to crush an uprising and warned he would fight to the death to remain in charge of the country he has ruled since 1969. “This is my country, my country,” he raged on national television. “I will fight to the last drop of my blood.” The violence across the country — inspired by the toppling of the leaders of Tunisia and Egypt — has seen scores of people killed at the hands of Kadhafi’s henchmen, which has met with international outrage. Uprisings have broken out across the region, including in Morocco, Yemen, Bahrain and Iran. However, further crude oil price rises could be capped after Saudi Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi said the OPEC oil cartel would step in to meet any supply shortage caused by the turmoil.

SINGAPORE – From surging rivers to volcanic steam, Southeast Asia is blessed with abundant sources of renewable energy but governments are not doing enough to exploit them, experts and activists say. Private firms are willing to invest in renewable energy, which could help rein in climate change, but are bogged down by policies that make it hard to reduce dependence on traditional sources like oil and coal, they said. The recent eruptions of Mount Merapi in Indonesia and Mount Bulusan in the Philippines underscored the amount of geothermal power waiting to be tapped for electricity in Southeast Asia. But harnessing renewable energy — which also includes solar, wind and hydroelectric power as well as biomass fuels — is costlier than building a fossil-fuelled power plant. Paul Curnow, a partner at law firm Baker & McKenzie who specialises in climate change policy, said most investments in “renewables” in Asia have so far gone to China and India, which have moved well ahead of Southeast Asia. “When you look across Southeast Asia, there are gaps in terms of climate and renewables policy,” Curnow told AFP. To develop renewable energy sources, it is crucial to have a critical mass of customers after a power plant has been put
up, said Rafael Senga of the environmental group WWF International. Governments have to mandate utilities to buy power generated from renewables for a certain period during which the cost of electricity is fixed at a level called “feedin tariffs”, he said. “This will ensure that cash flow and return on investment is secured for the investors,” said Senga, WWF’s energy policy manager for the Asia-Pacific. The Southeast Asian renewables market is varied, said Marc Lohoff, president of Asia Pacific and the Middle East at German solar systems manufacturer Conergy. Thailand, whose sun-kissed beaches on islands like Phuket and Krabi are a major tourist draw, has the best prospects at the moment, especially for solar energy. The Philippines and Malaysia have “enormous potential” because both have renewable energy legislation in place, Singapore-based Lohoff said. He said the growth of renewable energy in Southeast Asia “strongly depends on the development of incentives for investors,” especially feed-in tariffs with long durations. Feed-in tariffs must be backed by purchase contracts lasting 10 years or more to ensure a healthy return on investment, he said. “Most investors are just waiting for governments to announce and implement their feed-in tariff systems before they get involved,” he said.

During her arraignment Feb. 9, Lohan’s attorney indicated the actress may be willing to take a plea deal if the terms are right. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Keith Schwartz was expected to get reports on Lohan’s probation and decide whether the case can be resolved before trial. He has indicated that he thinks Lohan violated her probation on a 2007 drunken driving case, but has not indicated how he will handle the matter. He also has threatened to jail the actress if she encountered any other problems. “Everybody else has to follow the law,” Schwartz told Lohan this month. “You’re no different than anyone else. So please, don’t push your luck.” The necklace case has become the latest courthouse issue for Lohan, who was sent to jail twice and rehab twice last year for violating her probation. She spent three months in rehab at the Betty Ford Center and was accused by a rehab worker there of misdemeanor battery during a December argument. Prosecutors in Riverside County have not yet decided whether to pursue charges in that case. World’s Smallest Computer Created Researchers recently unveiled the first complete millimeter-scale computing system that is about the size of the letter “N” on the back of a penny (or about the same size as the letter in this sentence). This tiniest computer to date is a prototype of an implantable eye pressure monitor for glaucoma patients. Key to this unit linking up with other computers to form wireless sensor networks is a compact radio that needs no tuning to find the right frequency. One day, these Lilliputian computers could track pollution, monitor structural integrity, perform surveillance, or make virtually any object smart and traceable. Nearly invisible millimeterscale systems could enable ubiquitous computing by following the trajectory of Bell’s Law, a corollary to Moore’s Law. (Moore’s Law says that the number of transistors on an integrated circuit doubles every two years, roughly doubling processing power.) Bell’s Law says a new class of smaller, cheaper computers comes along about every decade. With each new class, the volume shrinks by two orders of magnitude and the number of systems per person increases. The law has held from 1960s’ mainframes through the ’80s’ personal computers, the ’90s’ notebooks and
the new millennium’s smartphones. [Read also: 10 Revolutionary Computers] “When you get smaller than hand-held devices, you turn to these monitoring devices,” said David Blaauw, a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of Michigan who is working on the new tiny computer. “The next big challenge is to achieve millimeter-scale systems, which have a host of new applications for monitoring our bodies, our environment and our buildings.” The new system is targeted toward medical applications, focusing on a pressure monitor designed to be implanted in the eye to conveniently and continuously track the progress of glaucoma, a potentially blinding disease. years from now.) In a package that’s just over one cubic millimeter, the system fits an extremely low-power microprocessor, a pressure sensor, memory, a thin-film battery, a solar cell and a wireless radio with an antenna that can transmit data to an external reader device that

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Malaysian researchers are testing whether three young orangutans reared in captivity can adapt to life in the wild outside Borneo, while activists insisted Wednesday the experiment was a flawed way of trying to help the endangered primates. The project is spearheaded by a private foundation that runs Orangutan Island, a research center and tourist attraction in northern peninsular Malaysia. The facility has bred orangutans in captivity over the past decade despite criticism by animal rights groups that conservation programs should focus instead on protecting existing orangutans in the jungles of Borneo and Sumatra. D. Sabapathy, the center’s senior manager, said researchers released three captive orangutans on a neighboring island last week. They are expected to remain there for up to six years before officials determine whether they can be let loose, either in peninsular Malaysia or Borneo. The project marks the first time that orangutans have been allowed to roam on their own in peninsular Malaysia. Activists estimate some 50,000 orangutans live in the wild in Malaysian and Indonesian territory in Borneo, while another 7,000 can be found on Indonesia’s Sumatra island. The three apes include Sonia, born at the center eight years ago, and two others — Ah Ling, 17, and Nicky, 23 — found by wildlife authorities in Borneo a decade ago and brought to the center. Sabapathy said he was not sure whether Ah Ling and Nicky had lost their mothers or were rescued from poachers. “It’s a rehabilitation program,” Sabapathy said. “It’s not that we simply will release them anywhere.” The orangutans’ lives are expected to
change dramatically. On Orangutan Island, they were kept in a 5-acre (2-hectare) enclosure, where they were fed by workers and observed by tourists. During their stay on the neighboring island, they will enjoy freedom across a 14acre (6-hectare) forested area, where workers have hidden bananas and tapioca for them to find until they are accustomed to obtaining food such as wild fruit and termites on their own.
LONDON – A new dinosaur named “Thunder Thighs” has been identified by British and US scientists who said its huge, muscular legs would have given it a fierce kick. Researchers retrieved bones from two incomplete skeletons — an adult and a juvenile — from a previously looted quarry in Utah in the western United States. Scientists found that the Brontomerus — Latin for thunder thighs — had a uniquely shaped hip bone, which was unusually large when compared to similar long-necked sauropod dinosaurs like the Diplodocus and Brachiosaurus. The bone provided a proportionally massive area for the attachment of muscles, leading researchers to say its thighs were like a “dinosaur four-wheel drive”. The dinosaur, Brontomerus mcintoshi, was also named after US paleontologist John “Jack” McIntosh.
“Brontomerus mcintoshi is a charismatic dinosaur and an exciting discovery,” said Mike Taylor, a researcher in the Department of Earth Sciences at University College London. “When we recognised the weird shape of the hip, we wondered what its significance might be, but we concluded that kicking was the most likely. “The kick would probably have been used when two males fought over a female, but given that the mechanics were all in place it would be bizarre if it wasn’t also used in predator defence.” Paleontologists believe the larger specimen was the mother of the younger and would have weighed around six tons — about the size of a large elephant — and measured 14 metres in length. Puel hopeful despite away goal disappointment Agence France Presse
LYON, France – Lyon coach Claude Puel believes his side can still reach the Champions League quarter-finals despite having conceded an away goal to Real Madrid in the first leg of their last 16 tie. Lyon old boy Karim Benzema came back to haunt his former employers by scoring the opening goal in Tuesday night’s match at Stade Gerland, before Bafetimbi Gomis atoned for a shocking first-half miss with an 83rd-minute equaliser. With an away goal to their name, Real are now favourites to go through ahead of the return leg in Madrid, which would bring an end to a six-year run of consecutive last-16 exits for the ninetime European champions. Lyon were left to rue their failure to capitalise on a dominant first-half showing on home turf but Puel said they were still optimistic ahead of the trip to the Bernabeu on March 16. “We produced a very encouraging performance from a collective and defensive perspective but we also knew how to create opportunities and we weren’t far away from taking them,” he said. “It therefore gives us enough confidence ahead of the return
leg as anything will be possible there, even though a 1-1 draw is always annoying because of the away goal scored by your opponents.” Lyon are bidding to oust Real in the last 16 for the second season running, having prevailed 21 on aggregate in last season’s competition. Puel refused to speculate on where the balance of power lay in the tie after the first leg but did express hope that his team would be able to repeat their exploits of 2010. “... “It’s up to us to seize these opportunities because we’re not just here to play Real but to beat them.” Puel’s words were echoed by Gomis, who also said he was pleased to have atoned for the 34thminute miss that saw him spoon the ball over an open goal after Iker Casillas had spilled a Michel Bastos cross at his feet. “After we conceded the goal, we showed character and we were able to come back, which gives us a chance for the return leg,” said the former Saint-Etienne frontman. “It’s my goal but my friends helped me a fair bit. I was lucky to get a nice flick-on from Cris. “After my chance in the first half, I knew that I’d get another one and that I’d have to keep my cool.”

WASHINGTON – Lawmakers are going another round in their fight to get a posthumous presidential pardon for the world’s first black heavyweight champion, who was imprisoned nearly a century ago because of his romantic ties with a white woman. New York Rep. Peter King and Arizona Sen. John McCain, both Republicans, plan to reintroduce a congressional resolution urging a pardon for boxer Jack Johnson. Another supporter, Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., said he will talk to President Barack Obama’s new chief of staff, William Daley, and Attorney General Eric Holder about the cause. “It’s an injustice that shouldn’t fall through the cracks, and it looks like that’s exactly what happened here,” Rangel said. Johnson became the first black heavyweight champion a century before Obama was elected the nation’s first black president. The boxer’s flamboyant lifestyle and his relationships with white women inflamed white sensibilities. Racial resentment boiled over after he de-
feated a white boxer in the “Fight of the Century” 100 years ago last summer. Three years later, Johnson was convicted of violating the Mann Act, which made it illegal to transport women across state lines for immoral purposes. One of Johnson’s great-great nieces, Linda Haywood of Chicago, is writing to Obama about the case. “I think having a letter from a family member will help put a face on our plea,” Haywood said. “Many people didn’t realize he had nieces and nephews. For years, the rest of my family was so ashamed, no one ever spoke of him because of the stigma attached to him being in prison.” King said he was surprised that Obama didn’t act during the last session of Congress, when the House and Senate passed the resolution. But the congressman said he’s still optimistic. “With last year’s elections, there seems to be a clear intent by the president to try to be more bipartisan,” King said. “Everything is there to correct an historic wrong and also, in a small way but significant way, help to bring the country together now.”

DENVER – For one night, the Denver Nuggets didn’t need Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups or any of their new acquisitions. J.R. Smith’s 26 points helped short-handed Denver beat the Memphis Grizzlies 120-107 on Tuesday, hours after the Nuggets finalized a blockbuster deal that sent Anthony and Billups to the New York Knicks. Tony Allen had 26 points and O.J. Mayo added 21 for the Grizzlies, who had their four-game winning streak halted. The Nuggets had only nine players on the bench following a three-team trade that also involved Minnesota. In the 13-player swap, the Knicks picked up Anthony, who has long been thought to want to play in the Big Apple, along with Billups, Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter and Renaldo Balkman. But New York had to pay a steep price, sending Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov and a 2014 firstround draft pick to the Nuggets, who get additional picks and cash. Denver also acquired center Kosta Koufos from the Timberwolves. The moves reshaped Denver’s roster by giving the team a bevy of talented young players. Felton, Mozgov, Chandler and Gallinari received the biggest ovation of the night without even stepping on the floor. They waved to the crowd from the side of the court after spending most of the game watching from a luxury suite as their new teammates picked apart the
Grizzlies. Coming out with an early intensity, the Nuggets jumped out to a 24-point lead in the first half and never glanced back. Smith hit a 33foot 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the third quarter, increasing the lead to 102-76. That was just the way the night was going for the Nuggets. No Anthony meant more shots to go around for everyone, especially Smith, who’s never been bashful to pull up and take a jumper. He finished 9 of 22 as he stepped into Anthony’s starting spot. However, Smith hobbled off the court late in the game favoring his right leg. In a pregame news conference, team president Josh Kroenke went out of his way to express remorse that the trade had to include Billups, a hometown favorite. “He is Denver basketball,” Kroenke said. But speedy Ty Lawson efficiently ran the team in place of Billups, scoring 21 points and dishing out seven assists. Nuggets coach George Karl relished the thought of coaching a depleted squad, pondering different moves
and scoring options all day. “I’ve been told by a lot of owners that I coach better when I have a shorter bench,” Karl said. “I think everybody knows I enjoy these type of games where you have to mix and match some situations and circumstances and find some success.” With the Nuggets comfortably up, a chorus of “Who needs ‘Melo?” began to ring through the crowd. With Anthony, though, went 25 points a game — a difficult total to make up. “We lost a superstar and superstars are hard to find in this league,” general manager Masai Ujiri said. “Chauncey and ‘Melo were the ultimate — they brought smiles and excitement and greatness to this basketball organization. “Do I feel there’s a future here? Absolutely. I feel very confident that things will work out and people will love watching these young kids play basketball here.” The Nuggets have 24 more games to reassemble the pieces in an effort to make the playoffs for an eighth straight season. The team entered the night in seventh place in the Western Conference, just ahead of Memphis and Utah.

Stoner tops Sepang test, Rossi sidelined Casey Stoner set the fastest time in Moto GP testing at Sepang today, while Valentino Rossi missed the day due to illness. Rossi was at the circuit during the morning but did not ride and returned to his hotel in the afternoon to rest ahead of Thursday’s third and final day of the test. In his absence, and in the searing Malaysian heat with the track temperature climbing above 60ºC, the three factory Honda riders filled the first three places. Stoner was just half a tenth faster than Dani Pedrosa and Andrea Dovizioso another three tenths behind. “We tested a lot of different things including the 2011 fork and new shocks and we found quite a lot of chattering with them,” said
Stoner. “We spent 90% of the day on one bike trying different configurations, changing the geometry to get the new fork working with the bike but didn’t find anything that felt really good, but these things are necessary to do before the start of the season. “We’re slowly starting to lean more towards the standard frame but tomorrow will give us more confirmation on this. We found the new
forks to be quite amazing in the braking points, in hard breaking I didn’t need to use half as much pressure and I was able to stop for the corner much quicker, but found a lot more chattering in the last part of the corner. “We managed to reduce this but we just seemed to lack the extra feeling that the alternative forks were giving”. Trulli: Pirellis lacking development Jarno Trulli believes Pirelli’s tyres are still lacking development, the Italian claiming this year’s rubber is proving too inconsistent. Pirelli is returning to Formula 1 this year for the first time since 1991, and the company has stated several times that its tyres have been designed to wear quickly enough for drivers to have to make two pitstops in each race. Trulli, however, reckons the tyres are lacking balance. “I think something is still missing in the development, because the tyres aren’t balanced yet,” Trulli was quoted as saying by Autosprint magazine. “I think this is the biggest problem to face at the moment. Pirelli says that this is what the FIA asked them to do, to have tyres that wear quickly, but I don’t think this is the problem. “In my opinion tyre wear is secondary compared to the tyre’s bal-
ance problems, because at the moment you get on the track with a new tyre that initially is understeering, and after three laps the behaviour is the opposite, that is impossible oversteering.” The Italian driver admitted he is also sceptical about the moveable rear wing producing more passing this year. “Are we sure there will be more overtaking, as many people say? I’d wait for the first races to really understand how everything works. “I have no opinion yet simply because I haven’t had the chance to test it all in race conditions yet. Let’s wait for the first race, then we’ll see whether it’s a positive new thing, or if it’s something we could have done without.” And Trulli claimed Formula 1’s constant changes in the rules are actually counterproductive, as they confuse the fans. “I strongly believe that For-
mula 1 changes too often,” he said. “My opinion is clear: there should be a discussion with all involved parties for one year, or even two if necessary, and then introduce a set of regulations that may well be revolutionary, but with many years of stability. “Each change is a cost for the teams, and if the top teams can afford investments in the short term too, for the other teams it’s a financial drain. Another thing I want to highlight is that every change is a cost for the big audiences, the ones that watch on Sundays. “A spectator can’t always be chasing the changing regulations, like refuelling, number of pit stops, F-duct and KERS. Can a spectator get passionate about KERS? People at home want to understand, and if we carry on changing the regulations every year we are just creating confusion.”
