LOS ANGELES - Adventure movie “Transformers: The Last Knight” led nominations on Monday for the annual Razzie Awards for the worst films on a list packed with previous Oscar winners Jennifer Lawrence, Tom Cruise, Mel Gibson and Russell Crowe. The tongue-in-cheek Razzies, created in 1980, serve as an antidote to Hollywood’s Oscars ceremony. Winners of the year’s worst films -- if they turn up -- are given a gold, spray-painted trophy at a ceremony held on the eve of the Academy Awards in March. “Transformers: The Last Knight,” the latest in the action franchise based on toys that change from robots to vehicles, earned nine nominations, including worst picture and worst acting nods for many of its star-studded cast, including Anthony Hopkins and Mark Wahlberg. Despite lackluster reviews, the 5th film in the series earned a healthy $605 million at the worldwide box office in 2017. Razzie founder John Wilson called “Fifty Shades Darker,” based on the best-selling erotic novels, “more sleep-inducing than sexy,” while the reboot of “Baywatch” was among the worst picture contenders. Johnny Depp -- a perennial Razzie target -- was singled out for what Wilson called “his worn out drunk routine” in “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” the fifth entry in the franchise in a summer of Hollywood sequels and remakes. Lawrence and director Darren Aronofsky also felt some Razzie wrath for their horror movie “Mother!,” which some movie reviewers viewed as the work of a genius and others found laughable. The movie earned a rare F score from audiences and less than $45 million at the global box office. Cruise and Crowe were among the worst actor nominees for “The Mummy,” while Gibson got a Razzie nod for his role in “Daddy’s Home 2.” Nominees and winners of the Razzies are voted for online by around 1,000 Razzie members from 24 countries, who sign up online and pay a $40 membership fee. Tsunami warning after huge Alaska quake

ANCHORAGE - A magnitude 7.9 earthquake hit the Gulf of Alaska in the early hours of Tuesday, prompting warnings of a possible tsunami down the Canadian and U.S. west coast and as far away as Hawaii. Local radio on the Alaskan island of Kodiak, close to the epicenter, urged listeners to move away from coastal areas.

A tsunami watch for the entire U.S. west coast and Hawaii were issued. “Based on all available data a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be destructive on coastal areas even far from the epicenter,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. If a tsunami is generated, it could reach Hawaii by 4:23 a.m. (1423 GMT) at the earliest, it added. Parts of Alaska and the west coast Canada have been issued with a tsunami warning and a tsunami watch is in place for the entirety of the the US west coast, includ-

ing California and Oregon, part of Washington state and Hawaii, with “hazardous tsunami waves” possible within the next three hours. Among the major cities on tsunami watch are Anchorage and Juneau in Alaska, Canada’s British Columbia and Vancouver, and Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego in the US.

Rabies vaccination coverage reaches 87.56 percent

Certainly this achievement can be attained due to active cooperation of Denpasar communities in providing vaccines to their pet dog. This was conveyed by the Head of Denpasar Agriculture Agency, I Gede Ambara Putra. “This achievement is certainly the result of good cooperation of responsive communities, and the team that surely always provides dissemination related to the danger of rabies,” he said. Rabies is known to the public as a ‘crazy dog disease’ which is a zoonotic disease caused by infectious virus and can cause death. Until now, this rabies disease has no medication. The animal belonging to rabies carrier include dog, cat, and monkey where they can

transmit the virus through the saliva of animal with an intermediate of bite or wound contact. Furthermore, the Head of the Denpasar Agriculture Agency, I Gede Ambara Putra, delivered that rabies virus infection can cause death as attacking the central nervous system. “People should be educated on this matter, especially about the vaccine and the action needing to be done. Fortunately, in Denpasar the city officials and the community can work together to handle this,” he said. Actually, the transmission of this virus is very preventable and Denpasar municipality through the Agriculture Agency always disseminates this information in order to increase public awareness by routinely conducting vaccination for pet dogs or the dogs tied or put into cage, stop abandoning dogs in the streets, and report immediately to the officer when to find animals infected or indicated to rabies carrier in order to avoid the bites. Bali still haunted by school dropout rate

Provincial govt proposes revision of National Education Law

DENPASAR - So far, dropout rate still haunts Bali, especially in secondary education, although the percentage is small and tends to decrease. A number of factors caused the dropout rates to remain on the Island of the Gods. They range from economic problems to difficult access to schools due to geographical factors. “There are still students dropping out of schools. From year to year, the number tends to decline, but still exists despite the existence of school operating fund (BOS) and assistance fund from provincial government,” said the Head of Bali Education Agency, Tia Kusuma Wardhani, in Education Workshop at Wiswa Sabha of Bali governor’s office on Monday (Jan. 22). Based on the latest data of the academic year 2015/2016, continued TIA, at elementary level there are 247 children quitting school. In junior high school, it is recorded to reach 217 children as well as 441 children in high school. She said the dropout rate in secondary education remains high mainly due to economic factors. In other words, Bali remains to have very-very poor families. “In addition, parents still have low understanding on the importance of education so that school-aged children have started working,” she added. TIA revealed that less harmonious family relationships also affect the dropout rate. Similarly, this condition is triggered by early marriage due to influence of social media and online games as well as geographical constraints. Meanwhile, Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, said that Bali needs to start e-learning to open access to cheaper and faster learning that is accommodating

more students. Especially in high school or vocational school, the number of students tends to be less when compared to elementary or junior high school students. The data at the Bali Education Agency in 2017, elementary school students amounted to 399,224 people, while the number of students in junior high school reaches 194,687 people as well as 86,466 people in high school and 96,684 people in vocational school. If the number of high school and vocational school students is added, the number is still lower than the number of junior high school students. “Many people cannot enjoy the education. They have dropped out at elementary school. So, the number in junior high school will increasingly reduce, let alone in college because everything is expensive and far. People have to work and so forth. This should be cut with a different education system, namely e-learning,” he said. According to Pastika, the online education system requires political policy. In this case, he wanted a revision to the Law No.20/2003 on National Education System. The amendment of the law has something to do with legal instrument and creation of competitiveness considering that education for all people without exception is one of the ways to eradicate poverty. “The law has been 15 years old. At that time, probably the development of technology has not been like the current one. Our children are not like the current generation. In 2003, the generation born in 2000 was just 3 years old. Now, they have been already 18 years old. Apparently, it must be changed and adjusted to the development of the world if we want to compete,” he said. (kmb32)

Schneider Electric says bug in its technology exploited in hack

MIAMI BEACH - Schneider Electric SE said on Thursday that hackers had exploited a flaw in its technology in a watershed incident discovered last month that halted operations at an undisclosed industrial facility. News of the breach surfaced on Dec. 14, when cyber security firms disclosed that hackers, likely working for a nation state, had invaded one of Schneider’s Triconex safety systems. Neither Schneider nor cyber experts have identified the target. Schneider initially told customers it believed the hack did not exploit a bug in the Triconex system. The system is used in nuclear facilities, oil and gas plants, mining, water treatment facilities and other plants to safely shut down industrial processes when hazardous conditions are detected. It is the first reported cyber attack on this type of system. While the target’s identity is unknown, one cyber security firm, Dragos, has said it occurred in the Middle East. Others have speculated it was in Saudi Arabia. Cyber experts have called it a watershed incident because it demonstrates how hackers might cause physical damage to a plant, or even kill people, by sabotaging safety systems before attacking industrial plants. France-based Schneider said in a customer advisory released on Thursday that hackers had exploited a pre-

viously unknown vulnerability in an older version of the Triconex firmware that allowed attackers to install a remote-access Trojan as “part of a complex malware infection scenario.” The advisory urged customers to follow previously recommended protocols for securing Triconex systems, which it said would have blocked the attack. The malware is capable of scanning and mapping an industrial network to provide reconnaissance and can also give hackers remote control over those systems, the advisory says. Schneider said it was developing tools to identify and remove the malware, which are expected to be released in February. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is also investigating the attack, according to Schneider. A DHS spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment. Schneider’s Triconex technology is used globally. DHS helps investigate attacks and vulnerabilities that have the potential to impact critical infrastructure, businesses and consumers in the United States. The company plans to release a software update to fix the security bug, Schneider’s global cyber security architect, Paul Forney, said in an interview on the sidelines of the S4 security conference in Miami Beach, Florida. After #MeToo, phone app allows you to legally consent to sex LONDON - A Dutch startup is launching an app which will allow people to give legal consent to sex via their mobile in an initiative spurred by Sweden’s plans to bolster its rape law. The LegalFling app, which lets users set out which practices they are and are not comfortable with, records sexual consent in a legally binding agreement. “Sex should not only be fun, but also safe,” LegalFling creator Rick Schmitz, chief executive of tech company LegalThings, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation on Thursday. “You’re not going to ask someone to sign a contract before sex - LegalFling is an easy way to clearly set and communicate rules and boundaries before having sex.” The app’s creators said they came up with the idea as a practical response to Sweden’s proposal to introduce legislation requiring explicit consent for sexual contact later this year. The launch - due in three weeks - comes amid heated public debate over issues around consent triggered by the #MeToo social media campaign against sexual harassment and assault which has seen a slew of allegations against Hollywood stars. The app uses blockchain, the technology behind the cryptocurrency bitcoin, making it impos-

sible for anyone to tamper with the agreement. Users can stipulate sexual dos and don’ts as well as rules on the use of condoms, disclosure of sexually transmitted diseases and the taking of photos and videos. The app allows both parties to agree on a penalty if footage is shared. Acts of revenge porn if the relationship broke down would be a breach of contract and easy to take to court, the developers say. The idea of such an app was ridiculed by actress Catherine Deneuve and other French women in a recent open letter which said the #MeToo campaign had gone too far and Sweden’s plans “bordered on ridiculous”.. “Next thing you know, two adults wanting to sleep together will have to specify beforehand, via an app ... which practices they do and don’t consent to,” they wrote, apparently unaware of LegalFling. Other commentators have raised concerns about the ethics and workability of the app. Writing on tech site Gizmodo, journalist Melanie Ehrenkranz said consent was not a “one-time checklist” but should occur continually throughout a sexual encounter and could also be withdrawn. GIANYAR — Residents were stunned by the collapse of the main gate into Langon Temple at Gianyar village on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 20). As a result of the incident, Bale Patok building measuring 3x3 meters at the temple venerated by the family of Gianyar Grand Palace also collapsed. No casualties were reported in the incident, while the losses were estimated to reach hundreds of millions of rupiahs. Collapse of the main gate with the height of five meters occurred on Saturday afternoon around 17:00. This incident is suspected to occur due to old age as was built in 1917. Aggravated with the flush of heavy rain these days, foundation of this old building was unable to withstand the burden. “Yesterday, the rain was quite heavy from 10:00. Until Saturday afternoon, it just subsided. Well, when the rain subsided the main gate collapsed,” said Dewa Mangku Langon when met at his residence on Monday (Jan. 22). He said the main gate at the temple venerated by Regent Gianyar, A.A. Gde Agung Bharata, has long been damaged, leaning towards the north. As a result, the entrance into the building cannot be opened properly. “When there is prayer or piodalan, we must use the west door. The main gate has been long not in use for fear when passing,” he explained. The incidence on the collapse of the main gate toward the northern side toppled over the Bale Patok located about 2.5 meters away. Dewa Mangku Langon also admitted to receive information if the temple area will be renovated but he did not know for sure when it can be realized. “As the information received, there will be a renovation, but I do not know when it will be as it is handled by the palace,” he explained. One of them is the road in the forest area of Cekik and Klatakan, Sumbersari. In addition to driver factor, the traffic accidents in this area also occur due to road conditions and natural factors.

This long-haired man was drilling wood with modern equipment carefully and meticulously. It is the activity carried out every day as a part of making tedung. His expertise to make the craft was obtained directly from his parents taught since his childhood. “I have been familiar with the making of tedung since my childhood as taught by my parents,” he explained on Monday (Jan. 22). TOKYO - At least 12 people were injured, some critically, when rocks from an erupting volcano rained down on skiers at a mountain resort in central Japan on Tuesday and an avalanche soon after the eruption engulfed about a dozen skiers. Six of those trapped were members of Japan’s Ground Self Defence Force (SDF) engaged in winter training manoeuvres, Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera said. The military said Humam Abdul Najib escaped from Marawi City, which the militants had hoped to establish as a stronghold for Islamic State in Southeast Asia, before it was recaptured by the military in October after five months of ferocious battles and aerial bombardment. Since then, Najib, also known as Abu Dar, has used the booty looted from bank vaults, shops and homes in Marawi to win over boys and young men in the impoverished southern province of Lanao del Sur, military officers in the area said. Hardened mercenaries are also joining, lured by the promise of money. As a result, Islamic State followers remain a potent threat in Southeast Asia even though hundreds of militants were killed in the battle for Marawi, the officers said. “Definitely they haven’t abandoned their intent to create a caliphate in Southeast Asia,” Colonel Romeo Brawner, the deputy commander of Joint Task Force Marawi, told Reuters. “That’s the overall objective, but in the meantime while they are still trying to recover and build up again - fighters and weapons - our estimate is they are going to launch terrorist attacks.” On Saturday, militants wounded eight soldiers in two attacks in Lanao del Sur, Brawner said, the first such violence since the recapture of Marawi. GENEVA - Global foreign direct investment (FDI) fell by 16 percent in 2017 to an estimated $1.52 trillion, a surprise downturn led by steep reversals in Britain and the United States, United Nations data showed on Monday. FDI, which largely comprises cross-border mergers and acquisitions and investment in start-up projects abroad, is a bellwether of globalisation and a potential sign of growth of corporate supply chains and future trade ties. But it can also go into reverse as companies pull investments out of foreign projects or repatriate earnings. “We had called a modest recovery in 2017, but it was not the case. It declined by 16 percent, a big

decline,” James Zhan, investment chief at UNCTAD, the U.N.’s trade and development agency told a news conference. “This is in striking contrast with the other macroeconomic variables such as global GDP and trade growth, which saw substantial improvements in 2017.” FDI going into the United States fell by a third to $310 billion. Flows into Britain, where there is business uncertainty about the future because of its decision to quit the European Union, shrank by 90 per-

cent to $19.4 billion. This did come against unprecedented investment in 2016 led by some mega-deals, however. Overall flows into China rose by 8 percent to reach a record $144 billion, although Zhan said multinational firms had also restructured and made significant divestments in China, which would have reduced the total stock of net FDI in China. The figures are preliminary but the overall trends are likely to be borne out in the final data, he said.

Global FDI may recover to the 2016 level as the global economy grows, but there are geopolitical risks and uncertainty over policy, including the impact of U.S. tax reforms, Zhan said. The net flow of FDI into the United States would be cut by remittances, such as Apple’s announcement last week that it would repatriate $38 billion, but it should also be boosted by investment attracted by U.S. tax cuts, he said. The UNCTAD figures also showed announcements of new for-

eign-owned “greenfield” projects in developing countries appeared to have slumped in 2017, retreating from a bumper 2016. MONROVIA - George Weah, the former international soccer star who won the presidency of Liberia last month, promised a crackdown on endemic corruption as he was sworn in on Monday in the country’s first peaceful change of power in seven decades.

PT PAL Indonesia`s President Director Budiman Saleh said here on Monday the number of warships to be produced in 2018 increased compared to that of the previous two years. “Our target for this year is to build four 60 meterlong missile ships ordered by the Indonesian Navy. We expect to export two missile boats to Malaysia, one missile boat to Thailand and several missile boats to African countries,” Budiman said. The production of the 60-meter missile boats is the second of its kind ordered by the Indonesian Navy after PT PAL has completed three missile ships and delivered to the institution. In addition to missile boats, PT PAL also manufactures missile destroyer ship and landing platform deck (LPD) for national marine defense equipment. “With regard to exports, we have penetrated the Southeast Asian market including Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines, and the African market including Senegal, Congo, Guinea Bissau and Burkina Faso,” he said. MANCHESTER - Manchester United signed Chile forward Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in a swap deal with midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan after a protracted transfer saga finally ended on Monday. The 29-year-old Sanchez, who was out of contract at Arsenal at the end of the season, has joined the Old Trafford club after local rivals Manchester City had pulled out of the race. British media reported that Sanchez, who will wear United’s iconic No. 7 shirt, has joined the club on a 4-1/2year deal, while Arsenal announced that Armenia captain Mkhitaryan, who turned 29 on Sunday, had signed a longterm contract. Sanchez said: “I am thrilled to be joining the biggest club in the world. The chance to play in this historic stadium and to work with Jose Mourinho was something I could not turn down. “I am very proud to be the first Chilean player ever to play for United’s first team and I hope I can show our fans all around the world why the club wanted to bring me here.” Sanchez missed Arsenal’s 4-1 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday to have a medical in Manchester on Sunday.
