Singer Madonna defends ‘blowing up the White House’ remark
WASHINGTON - Pop singer Madonna, who said in a profanity-laced speech at Saturday’s Women’s March in Washington, D.C., that she had thought about “blowing up the White House,” said on Sunday that she was speaking metaphorically.
Madonna’s speech, which was criticized on social media, led some television networks to abruptly stop their live feeds of the march, which drew hundreds of thousands of people in demonstrations across the United States to protest the election of Donald Trump as president. “I am not a violent person,” the singer songwriter said on Instagram. “I spoke in metaphor and I shared two ways of looking at things - one was to be hopeful, and one was to feel anger and outrage, which I have personally felt.” The 58-year-old led the crowd on Saturday in chants of, “Yes, we’re ready” to take on policies promoted by Trump, who alienated many women during the election campaign with comments’ about rivals’ attractiveness and promises to outlaw or diminish abortion rights. Trump’s comments in a decade-old video declaring that women would allow him, as a celebrity, to kiss and grope them without their consent further outraged many women. But Madonna preceded the chants with coarse words for critics of the march. “To our detractors that insist that this march will never add up to anything, fuck you,” the pop star said. SEOUL - Samsung Electronics Co Ltd indicated on Monday that its latest flagship Galaxy S smartphone could be delayed as it pledged to enhance product safety following an investigation into the cause of fires in its premium Note 7 devices. Wrapping up its months-long probe, the world’s top smartphone maker said faulty batteries from two suppliers were to blame for a product failure that wiped $5.3 billion off its operating profit. Samsung mobile chief Koh Dong-jin said procedures had been put in place to avoid a repeat of the fires as the South Korean firm prepares to launch the Galaxy S8, its first premium handset since the Note 7’s demise. “The lessons of this incident are deeply reflected in our culture and process,” Koh told reporters at a press briefing. “Samsung Electronics will be working hard to regain consumer trust.” Koh said the Galaxy S8 would not be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona

Samsung said later on Monday it has not decided whether to reuse parts in the recovered Note 7s or resell any recalled phones. A person familiar with the matter told Reuters reselling some Note 7s as refurbished phones was an option. The firm said it has recovered 96 percent of the 3.06 million Note 7s sold to consumers. Investigations by internal and independent experts ruled out problems with the Note 7’s hardware and software. Instead, they said the batteries, which came from two suppliers, featured different manufacturing defects or design flaws that caused them to short-circuit. “The odds that two different suppliers had issue with the same phone is an extremely low likelihood and may signal we have reached an in-
flection point in smartphone battery technology,” said Patrick Moorhead, president of technology analyst and advisory firm Moor Insights & Strategy. Samsung did not name the suppliers on Monday but previously identified them as affiliate Samsung SDI Co Ltd and China’s Amperex Technology Ltd (ATL). SDI said separately it would invest 150 billion won ($129 million) to improve product safety and expected to continue supplying batteries for Samsung phones. ATL declined to comment. Samsung said it accepted responsibility and would not take legal action against suppliers. The company touted longer battery life and fast charging as major improvements when it launched the Note 7. “The current situation is not largely different from that of the first recall, when Samsung pointed the finger at battery defects,” said Park Chul-wan, a former director of
the Center for Advanced Batteries at the Korea Electronics Technology Institute. Among other measures to boost safety, Samsung said it had implemented an eight-point battery check system to avoid any such problems going unnoticed again. Freeze-dried food and 1 bathroom: 6 simulate Mars in dome
HONOLULU — Crammed into a dome with one bathroom, six scientists will spend eight months munching on mostly freeze-dried foods — with a rare treat of Spam — and have only their small sleeping quarters to retreat to for solace. The simulated stay on Mars with a carefully selected crew of researchers embarked on a mission Thursday to gain insight into the psychological toll a similar real-life voyage would have on astronauts. It’s part of a NASAfunded human-behavior experiment that could help the space agency send humans to the red planet in the next 20 years. The man-made dome that the four men and two women call home is outfitted with futuristic white walls and an elevated sleeping platform on the world’s largest active volcano in Hawaii. The vinyl-covered shelter spans 1,200 square feet, or about the size of a small, two-bedroom house. A video released by the group shows the six scientists in matching red polo shirts arriving and entering the dome to farewell handshakes from program associates. Except for the presence of the white van that brought the group, the scene was reminiscent of the red planet — the dome set in a barren, rock-strewn and reddish landscape with distant hills giving the feel of a wind-swept and forbidding environment. “I’m looking forward to building relationships with my crew,” said mission commander James Bevington, a space scientist. “I fully anticipate coming out with five new best friends.” They will have no physical contact with people in the outside world and will work with a 20-minute delay in communications with their support crew — the time it would take for an email to reach Earth from Mars. The project will study the psychological difficulties with living in isolated, confined conditions for an extended period. NASA hopes to send humans to an asteroid in the 2020s and Mars by the 2030s. “We’re hoping to figure out how best to select individual astronauts, how to compose a crew and how to support that crew on long-duration space missions,” said principal investigator Kim Binsted, a University of Hawaii science professor.
The team members include engineers, a computer scientist, a doctoral candidate and a biomedical expert. They were selected from 700 applicants subjected to personality tests, background checks and extensive interviews. “When I started, my biggest fear was that we were going to be that crew that turned out like Biosphere 2, which wasn’t a very pretty picture,” Bevington said. The experimental greenhouse-like habitat in Arizona became a debacle in the 1990s. It housed different ecosystems and a crew of eight to try to understand what would be needed for humans to live on other planets. The participants were supposed to grow their own food and recycle their air inside the sealed glass space. But the experiment soon spiraled out of control, with the carbon dioxide level rising dangerously and plants and animals dying. The crew members grew hungry and squabbled so badly that by the time they emerged two years later, some of them weren’t speaking to each other. The University of Hawaii operates the dome, called Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation, or HISEAS, and NASA has dedicated more than $2 million to the various stages of the project. Scientists previously lived in the dome for two other long-term NASA-funded stays — one of them lasting a year, the other eight months — to study food requirements and crew cohesion. A number of other Mars simulation projects exist around the world, but one of the chief advantages of the Hawaii experiment is the rugged, Mars-like landscape, on a rocky, red plain below the summit of the world’s largest active volcano, the Big Island’s Mauna Loa. The dome has a kitchen, laboratory and bathroom, plus small sleeping quarters for each member. Unlike Biosphere 2, it won’t be airtight. To maintain the crew’s sense of isolation, bundles of food, including some canned goods and snacks, will be dropped off a distance from the dome, and the team members will send a robot to retrieve them. The participants will not be confined but will wear spacesuits whenever they step outside for geological expeditions, mapping studies or other tasks. They will wear instruments measuring their moods and proximity to other team members and use virtual reality devices to simulate familiar and comforting surroundings. (ap)

Trump’s victory creates uncertainty for wind and solar power
HONOLULU — President Donald Trump has disputed climate change, pledged a revival of coal and disparaged wind power, and his nominee to head the Energy Department was once highly skeptical of the agency’s value. What this means for states’ efforts to promote renewable energy is an open question. States that are pushing for greater reliance on wind and solar power are not quite sure what to expect as Trump takes over. Many of them depend heavily on federal renewable-energy tax credits, grants and research, much of which comes from the Energy Department. Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Trump’s pick to lead the department, presents a contradictory figure: A Texas oil promoter, he also oversaw a huge expansion of wind-energy production while governor. When he ran for president in 2011, he included Energy on a list of departments he thought should be abolished, though he disavowed the idea Thursday at his Senate confirmation hearing. “We don’t know what version of Perry is going to show up,” said Michael Webber, deputy director of the Energy Institute at the University of Texas, Austin. Renewable energy accounts for about 15 percent of the electricity generated in the United States. And 29 states have set targets for boosting their reliance on such power. Officials, experts and advocates in more than a half-dozen states with some of the most ambitious goals told The Associated Press that they are on course to meet their targets. Most said that while Trump policies could slow the expansion, they won’t stop it.
The price of harnessing the power of the sun and wind has dropped so much that in many areas of the country, experts say it could be competitive with traditional power sources such as coal and natural gas even without federal subsidies. Further, they do not expect a fast repeal of the key federal tax credits that have propelled the industry for years. Still, policies aimed at bringing more renewable power online quickly are not expected while Trump is in office. “We need to be moving faster, not slower,” said Jeff Forward, president of the trade group Renewable Energy Vermont. “I fear we’re tapping on the brakes right now.” Those who promote renewable energy are concerned because Trump has expressed doubts about whether climate change is real, even though scientists agree that it is happening and that the burning of fossil fuels is a major reason for it. Trump also has called for reviving the coal industry, which has struggled in part because of the rise of renewable energy. And he has criticized wind turbines near Palm Springs, California, both for killing birds and for looking like a “junkyard.” Perry, at his confirmation hearings, said he believes climate change is happening and that some of it is caused by human activity. He also said he favors an “all of the above” energy policy, the way he did in Texas, and wants the federal government to continue research on renewable energy. Arrangement of riverbanks continues DENPASAR - Arrangement to a number of riverbanks in Denpasar conducted by Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency (DPUPR) has been running since the past few years. This year, the arrangement program of riverbanks continues. It is meant to minimize waste disposal into the river and make the river flow function properly. This was confirmed by the Division Head of the Denpasar Public Works Agency for Water Resources and Spatial Planning, I Gusti Ngurah Putra Sanjaya, recently. He said that in 2016 the riverbanks arranged are the Loloan River, Tagtag River and Badung River (under the bridge of Jalan Gajah Mada). The other arrangement is also conducted by the Spatial Planning and Housing
Agency (DRTP). The arrangement handled by DTRP is the riverbank of Bindu River, while the riverbank of Punggawa River is arranged by Sidakarya village. According to Putra Sanjaya, this year his division has an agenda to continue the arrangement of a number of riverbanks funded by central government. The riverbanks to be arranged include the continuation of Badung River, Tagtag River (under Youth Park) as well as the downstream of Badung River (fishing park area). In addition, the bank of Mati River will also be arranged this year. As is known, to realize cleaner and more beautiful riverbanks, the municipal government has made arrangement through the DPUPR. The riverbanks having been ar-
ranged include the banks of Bindu River at Ujung hamlet, Kesiman, Badung River from under the bridge of Jalan Gajah Mada and Tagtag River in the east of SMPN 10 Denpasar junior high school. As the initial stage of the arrangement, each is worked on along 80 meters on the right and left side of the river flow. In addition to the installation of paving block in combination with mosaic stones, the area is also featured with a garden light. “This installation of paving block and mosaic stones at riverbanks is meant to eliminate the slum and haunted image of the river so that it becomes something interesting, beautiful and clean,” said the Head of DPUPR Denpasar, I Ketut Winarta. Piles of rubbish at Kidul Market complained by people BANGLI - Several people in the neighborhood of Pule hamlet complained about the mounting piles of rubbish in the area behind Kidul Market, Bangli. Stench of the rubbish is very disturbing residents, especially those living near the waste disposal site. As the information compiled, the mounting piles of rubbish spread stench because they have never been transported by janitor since the past five days. A resident of Pule hamlet, Made Darma, said on Friday (Jan. 20) that existence of the piles of rubbish in the back area of Kidul Market precisely on the north of Nataran Er Malet Temple is disturbing the comfort of residents. Due to the piles of rubbish consisting of various merchandise remnants owned by market merchants exuded the stench to a radius of several meters. Darma said that the rubbish is usually taken regularly by janitor every afternoon. However, since the past five days the rubbish in the containers has never been transported, and was allowed to accumulate to overflow onto the streets.
“The rubbish has not been transported for five days. I do not know whether the officers are on strike or other. The stench is already disturbing,” he said. As a resident, he strongly objected to the piles of rubbish that are not transported. He also hoped that relevant agencies could immediately come down to deal with the problem. Other than Made Darma, the piles of rubbish having not been transported for the past five days are also complained by merchants of food stall located not far from the location of temporary disposal site. The merchant who was reluctant to be named claimed that stench of the rubbish causes decline in the number of visiting shoppers. Responding to such condition, he claimed to have delivered to one of the janitors so as to immediately transport the rubbish. Unfortunately, the report did not get any follow up. “It happened because the garbage truck is damaged. I suggest if the truck is damaged why it does not rent a truck to transport it? It is said that it has no budget for it,” he said. In the meantime, the head of
the Bangli Environment Agency, Ida Ayu Gede Yudi Sutha, as confirmed last Saturday admitted that the rubbish transportation in Bangli and Kayuamba cannot be done optimally recently due to limitations of the fleet. So far, the government of Bangli has a total of 12 garbage trucks, where five of them are now out of order and being repaired at workshop. “They have been damaged from 5 to 6 days ago. Now, they are repaired at workshop,” he said. Yudhi Sutha said that damages to the garbage trucks happen due to age factor of the vehicles. On average, the garbage trucks owned by the Bangli Environment Agency have been over twenty years old. Nevertheless, so far her agency has been already trying to maximize the existing trucks to transport the rubbish, including at the Kidul Market. As reported, the field officers at Kidul Market have routinely transported the rubbish every day. “Maybe it is the new pile. However, I have now ordered my officers to immediately transport the waste at the market,” she concluded. (kmb40)

From his observation, the provincial roads considered prone to damage especially happen to road section of Petang (Badung), Kintamani (Bangli) and Pupuan (Tabanan). “These areas are prone to natural disasters, especially landslides. In Petang, for instance, we will handle the road. In 2017, we have just made the planning,” he explained.
According to Astawa, his agency planned the construction of bridge after the landslide eroded the road connecting Petang to Pelaga in late 2016. The budget needed approximately reaches IDR 60-70 billion for the establishment of bridge with the length of around 100 meters. “For permanent solution, we are going to build a bridge because it will probably get eroded by landslides in the area,” he added. Abrasion at Pebuahan increasingly serious
NEGARA - Abrasion on Pebuahan Beach, Banyubiru, Negara, is now getting worse. This has been taking place beach since the 2010s. Aside from devastating the coastline of about 2 kilometers, several buildings of Islamic school and residences, including grilled fish stalls and fishing boat moorings are also ferociously eroded by waves. Moreover, tidal waves on new moon hit again the coastal areas of Pebuahan.
The severity of impact and damage occurred in southern coastal areas of Jembrana due to abrasion has not yet got a quick handling from the government. Moreover, the handling carried out so far is considered less maximal and comprehensive so that the damage caused by tidal waves is increasingly more serious and washes away the land and threatens the life of coastal communities. As observation, such condition caused a number of buildings of grilled fish stalls owned by local residents to collapse due to brunt abrasion taking place in the evening. Similarly, the revetment built by stall owners to protect the remaining buildings was also damaged as swept away by the waves. Moreover, every full moon and new moon, the seawater is ensured to come ashore and the newly-paved village roads is also threatened to drift. This can be observed when getting into the entrance of culinary grilled fish area, where partial road section along the coast has been eroded and it is only two meters from the shoreline. A resident of Pebuahan, Suyanto, claimed that four units of his gazebo have disappeared after washed away by the waves. On last new moon, not long ago, the seawater went up again. Residents are working hard to create a makeshift breakwater, but it remains to get eroded due to swift waves. Head of the Jembrana Public Works, Spatial Planning and Settlement Agency, I Gusti Putu Merthadana, when confirmed on Sunday (Jan. 22) said that although the local government has submitted proposal for the handling of the entire beach experiencing abrasion in Jembrana to central government, until now there has been no reply from the central public works, chiefly the Bali-Penida River Agency. He said the last handling to the abrasion was carried out in 2015, namely on the beach of Cupel and Baluk village. He suspected that a number of other regions in Bali also experience abrasion so that the handling requires great budget. Therefore, his agency can only wait for the turn of the handling. The handling of coastal abrasion at Pebuahan, he added, has been proposed several years ago and studies have been undertaken for several times by Bali-Penida River Agency. However, there is no certainty regarding the handling so far. Other proposals of the abrasion handling will be submitted again to central government in 2017. Hopefully, the coastal abrasion handling at Pebuahan could be realized this year. He mentioned that along the 72 km of coastline owned by Jembrana spreading from Gilimanuk to Pengeragoan there are 22 damaged points due to abrasion. It also includes some tourist areas such as Medewi, Pekutatan and Pebuahan. According to him, his agency has proposed improvement to the Ministry of Public Works through the Bali-Penida River Agency for the handling of coastal abrasion. Migrant worker from Buleleng arrested by police in America SINGARAJA - An Indonesian migrant worker (TKI) from Buleleng is reported to get involved in a legal case overseas. The worker identified as Gede ST, 26, was alleged to get involved in a case of sexual abuse against minor in the United States. Gede ST was arrested by police to undergo further investigation. Allegation on the immoral case was at issue on one of the local news portals, 10-ABC, that reported if Gede ST from Giri Emas village, Sawan, was arrested by Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) at Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was arrested on suspicion of child sexual abuse against a 15year-old American citizen. The incident occurred on Sunday (Jan. 15) aboard where he works. At the beginning, Gede ST met a 15-year-old girl whose identity was made secret. Both were kissing in the hallway of the ship and then resumed into the toilet on the 12th floor. Interestingly, Gede ST and the girl made consensual love. Nevertheless, the incident was protested by the girl’s parents. The parents with anonymity then reported the case on Thursday (Jan. 19) with charges of sexual abuse against minor. The report was then followed up by police authority and resumed with the arrest on Friday (Jan. 20). Police have not explained whether the case will be further processed or not. Sunarsa, confirmed on Sunday (Jan. 22) that one of his residents faced legal problem in the United States. He said that so far the issue is still confusing, so that he could not give definite information related to the case. The information told that his resident is in Houston area, Texas, and is undergoing the legal process there. Currently Sunarsa is still waiting for official information from the government, so there is clarity regarding the fate of his resident. “So far, the information obtained from his friends aboard remains mazy. There is no clarification from the agent. Similarly, we do not know for sure regarding the charges of the case,” he said. In the meantime, Spokesperson of the government of Buleleng, Made Supartawan, did not dare to respond to the news. So far, he is still trying to get information through the Buleleng Manpower and Transmigration Agency in order to ascertain the truth of the case. If the case really happened, local government will give serious attention because it concerns with the fate of Buleleng resident working overseas. “We have made coordination with Manpower and Transmigration Agency and the certainty of the information is now still being traced. SHANGHAI - China’s decision to allow all couples to have two children instead of one has resulted in birth rates rising to the highest level since 2000, a government official said. New births in the world’s most populous nation reached 17.86 million in 2016, up around 1.4 million compared to the 2011-2015 average, said Yang Wenzhuang of the National Health and Family Planning Commission. “While the total number of women of childbearing age fell by 5 million, the number of births increased significantly, showing that the family planning policy adjustments were extremely timely and extremely effective,” he told reporters on Sunday. Worried about the costs of supporting an increasingly ageing population, China issued new guidelines in late 2015 allowing all
parents to have two children. China began implementing its controversial “one-child policy” in the 1970s in order to limit population growth, but authorities are now concerned that the country’s dwindling workforce will not be able to support an increasingly ageing population. Yang said the number of women of childbearing age was expected to decline by about 5 million a year over the 2016-2020 period, but China was hoping to keep birth rates at around 17-20 million a year. China has already made provisions to increase medical staff and the number of hospital beds in order to handle the rising number of births. The apology was the clearest admission yet of the blacklist of cultural and media figures critical of the impeached leader that has led to the arrests of her former chief of staff and the culture minister at the weekend for abuse of power. “It is distressing and shameful that the ministry, which should have been the bulwark for freedom of artistic expression and creativity, has caused questions of fairness in assisting culture and arts with a list of artists to be excluded from public support,” Vice Culture Minister Song Soo-keun said. The blacklist, part of which was seen by Reuters, contains the names of thousands of actors, writers, film directors and others. It includes acclaimed film directors like Cannes award winner Park Chan-wook, Venice Film Festival top prize winner Kim Ki-duk and actors Moon So-ri and Song Gang-ho. None was immediately available for comment. Faced with a political crisis earlier in her term, the government and state entities used the blacklist as “guidelines” to penalise artists and censor content, a special prosecutor’s office investigating an influence-
peddling scandal said last week. Park’s former chief of staff, Kim Ki-choon, and Culture Minister Cho Yoon-sun, who was the first sitting cabinet member ever to be arrested before she resigned from her post at the weekend, are charged with abuse of power and perjury. Both have denied the existence of the list, or in playing a role in drawing it up, although Cho later said she had heard of such a list. The presidential Blue House has also denied that a blacklist exists. Park was impeached by parliament in December after accusations that she colluded with long-time friend Choi Soon-sil to pressure big businesses to donate to two foundations set up to back the president’s policy initiatives. The special prosecutor’s office said on Monday it planned to investigate other conglomerates after finishing its probe of Samsung Group, the largest, whose leader has been named a suspect in the graft scandal surrounding Park. Prosecution office spokesman Lee Kyu-chul did not elaborate on when the investigation into Samsung may end or what other conglomerates the office planned to investigate. Lee also said the office may question more Samsung officials, but it was not clear whether he meant those who already had been called for questioning. LONDON - Emerging stocks gained and Mexico’s peso led a currencies rally on Monday as markets took a breather following Donald Trump’s inauguration as U.S. president, but Turkey’s lira remained under pressure ahead of a crucial central bank meeting.
MSCI’s emerging markets index snapped a two-day losing streak to rise 0.6 percent, lifted by bourses in Asia and gains in South Africa. The gains came in the wake of the dollar sliding broadly to touch its weakest level in six weeks after Trump struck a protectionist tone in his debut speech, sowing doubts on the upbeat outlook for the U.S. economy which had been fuelled by his pledges of tax cuts and stimulus. “The pressure remains on the dollar, and that is causing a general positive sentiment towards emerging markets ... investors are starting to doubt just how much he will deliver,” said Per Hammarlund, chief emerging markets strategist at SEB. “It is just a temporary breather, it is unlikely to last. As we have sen before, he may be quiet for a short time or shift his focus to something else, but ... we will not see him backtrack on his suspicious attitude on trade with cheaper countries such as China and Mexico.” Mexico’s peso, which had born the brunt of investor
angst over Trump’s policies, led the rally across currencies, gaining nearly 1 percent and trading at its strongest in 13-days. It had chalked up its biggest gains in more than two months on Friday after Trump did not mention the country directly in his inauguration speech. South Africa’s rand nearly matched those gains while Russia’s rouble struggled 0.4 percent stronger despite oil prices reversing their initial gains and falling 1 percent. Turkey’s lira remained the exception however, weakening as much as 0.5 percent as investors showed nerves ahead of a central bank meeting on Tuesday widely seen as a major credibility test in the face of a tumbling currency. Fifteen out of 18 economists polled by Reuters expect the central bank to increase its benchmark repo rate, with nine of them forecasting an increase of 50 basis points. “The lira has stabilised in the last few days ... There is a substantial risk that the central bank will not hike at all,” said Hammarlund. “The problem is: It will then just be a matter of time before there will be another run on the lira.” Israel’s central bank is expected to keep interest rates at a record low of 0.1 percent for the 23rd month in a row when it announces it decision later in the day. China, Philippines agree to cooperate on 30 projects worth $3.7 bln
BEIJING - China has agreed to cooperate with the Philippines on 30 projects worth $3.7 billion focusing on poverty reduction, the two countries said after a meeting in Beijing on Monday. Chinese Commerce Minister Gao Hucheng announced the deals without giving details, saying it was an “initial batch” of projects that still needed to be finalised and paperwork still needed to be processed by the banks involved. Philippine Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez said he had a “very productive” meeting with Gao and they had discussed large projects in rural areas, as well as some smaller projects. The deal is the first announcement from a two-day visit by a Philippine cabinet delegation to China that comes three months after President Rodrigo Duterte visited Beijing to pave the way for new commercial alliances. China has welcomed Duterte’s foreign policy shift away from traditional ally the United States and towards doing more regional deals for loans and business under his “pro-Filipino” policy. Relations between the Philippines and China “fully recovered” after Duterte’s visit, and “China supports president Duterte to lead the Philippines people in developing their economy,” Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a regular news briefing on Monday.
Chinese Vice Premier Wang Yang told the Philippines’ delegation that the two countries were friends and there was enormous potential to develop trade and business ties, state news agency Xinhua said. Both countries should continue to push for the healthy development of relations, Wang added. Chinese officials pledged $15 billion of investment to the Philippines during Duterte’s visit in October, according to the Philippine finance department. Asked whether U.S. President Donald Trump’s economic policies would affect commercial ties between China and the Philippines, Dominguez said: “It’s better to be with good friends.” “I’m not sure at this moment exactly what the new U.S. policies, but I believe that the reorientation of our president to our neighbours really was very smart,” Dominguez told reporters. The Philippine delegation is due to meet Vice Premier Wang Yang at Zhongnanhai, the Beijing complex that houses China’s central government, later on Monday. The Philippine team on the trip includes Duterte’s finance, budget, economic, public works and transport secretaries. Ultimately this art disappeared and is forgotten. Now, the number of wayang wong art troupe can be counted on fingers.Karangasem records to still have three wayang wong art troupes namely at the clan temple of Batur Paketan at Tengah hamlet, Selumbung, Ban village and Duda village. The wayang wong art at this village has been revitalized with the help of an art college in Denpasar in November 2015. The wayang wong art troupe is still running as related to wali dance that should be performed in certain ceremonies at temples. All this time, before there was revitalization of wayang wong either playing the Mahabharata or Ramayana epic story, it was often held pursuant to the existing condition in order to still survive. However, after the revitalization local residents are happy because amid the globalization and instant art today, if worked on and danced well, the wayang wong is still able to amaze the audience. As evidence, the wayang wong art troupe making performance with the title of ‘Kumbakarna Seized’ was capable
of stunning local residents. One of the oldest dancers in the wayang wong art troupe at Selumbung is Wayan Nurasih, 65. As at Ban village, the wayang wong dancers only remain several people. “It needs to be revitalized by training the cadre of dancers as the successor,” he said. In Bangli we know an artist of wayang wong from Sulahan, Susut, I Dewa Gede Bakti. He explained that based on its genre the wayang wong belongs to bebali (semi sacred) art. The wayang wong is usually performed at temples in relation to religious ceremonies. Based on its storyline, the wayang wong is divided into two, namely the Ramayana and the parwa. Wayang wong of Ramayana is a puppet show whose storyline is taken from the Ramayana epic, while the parwa tells about the storyline of Mahabharata epic. Ordinarily, the parwa dancers do not use the property like mask as found in the wayang wong of Ramayana. Further, he explained that the dancers of wayang wong make bilingual conversations namely in Old Javanese and Balinese language in the show. Old Javanese language is spoken by the dancers playing the main characters, while Balinese language is spoken by dancers portraying as clown. “Clown has the most difficult role. Apart from having to make jokes, he must also serve as an interpreter,” he explained. According to this artist who is also the Secretary in the Bangli Culture and Tourism Agency, though wayang
wong has existed since the days of Waturenggong administration, until now he recognized that this art still exists. It is evident from the persistence of wayang wong in temple ceremonies at several villages in Bangli. READ Topeng Panca of Denpasar City Moreover, he had confidence that wayang wong will remain to persist considering at several villages the property used in wayang wong performance like masks are sanctified and danced in the implementation of ceremony. “At Sulahan village, for instance, the wayang wong is still staged because the masks are
sanctified by local residents,” he explained. Nevertheless, Dewa Bakti recognized that it is quite difficult to regenerate the wayang wong dancer in several villages. Habitually the current younger generation is rarely interested in learning this art because is it hard to learn the languages, namely the Old Javanese and Balinese language. “Thankfully younger generation at Sulahan village has quite high interest in becoming the successors of wayang wong dancers, so that wayang wong can remain to survive until these days,” he said. Storms continue slamming U.S. South after killing at least 18
TAMPA - A dangerous weekend weather system killed at least 18 people in the U.S. South, with Georgia officials reporting more than a dozen deaths on Sunday after severe thunderstorms and tornadoes buffeted several states. Seven people died in Cook County, Georgia, state emergency managers said, with a mobile home park particularly hard hit, according to reports. Photos showed collapsed buildings, destroyed rooftops, toppled trees and debris-littered fields. Georgia Governor Nathan Deal declared an emergency for seven counties in the south-central part of the state, warning that dangerous conditions persisted as wind and flood warnings remained in effect for much of the state early on Monday. “I urge all Georgians to exercise caution and vigilance in order to remain safe and prevent further loss of life or injuries,” Deal said in a news release. First Baptist Church Adel, located in the Cook County seat near the Florida-Georgia state line, was sheltering more than 50 people, said pastor Bill Marlette, who had just helped inform a family that two of their relatives were among the dead.
“There’s a lot of hurting people right now,” he said in a telephone interview. “There’s just a sense of shock.” The storms in Georgia, which killed 14 people, followed a predawn tornado in Mississippi on Saturday that killed four. Severe weather also injured more than 50 others and damaged about 480 homes in Mississippi. A few storms continued to threatened coastal areas in Georgia on Sunday night, said Mark McKinnon, a spokesman for the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency. The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Rome and Calhoun until 3.30 a.m. EST, advising residents to move to higher ground. The system prompted forecasters to issue a rare “high risk” warning of severe storms threatening parts of southern Georgia, north and central Florida and Alabama on Sunday, the first such warning since 2014. South Carolina could also see severe weather. In Alabama, some 29,000 power outages were reported as of Sunday afternoon, Alabama Power said. World must not miss early signals of any flu pandemic - WHO GENEVA - The World Health Organization called on all countries to monitor closely outbreaks of deadly avian influenza in birds and poultry and to report promptly any human cases that could signal the start of a flu pandemic. Different strains of bird flu have been spreading across Europe and Asia since late last year, leading to large-scale slaughtering of poultry in certain countries and some human deaths in China. Nearly 40 countries have reported new outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza in poultry or wild birds since November, according to the WHO. “The rapidly expanding geographical distribution of these outbreaks and the number of virus strains currently co-circulating have put WHO on high alert,” Margaret Chan told the start of the U.N. agency’s 10-day executive board. The new H5N6 strain causing severe outbreaks in Asia was created by gene-swapping among four different viruses, she said. The world is better prepared for the next influenza pandemic - fol-
lowing the H1N1 pandemic that circled the world in 2009-2010 “but not at all well enough”, Chan said. In China, there has been a “sudden and steep increase” in human cases of H7N9 since December and the WHO has not been able to rule out limited human-to-human spread in two clusters of human cases although no sustained spread has been detected thus far, she said. BENGKULU - The Natural Resource Conservation Agency (BKSDA) of Bengkulu Province has estimated that only 17 Sumatran tigers (Panthera tigris sumatra) exist in the provinces forest. Coordinator of Forest Ecosystem Control of BKSDA BengkuluLampung Said Jauhari stated here on Monday that based on last years observation and data gathered from human-animal conflict reports and patrol, it was estimated that the population of Sumatran tigers in Bengkulu reached 17. The government has set a target to increase the population of Sumatran tigers by three percent every year, Jauhari noted. However, fragmentation of the forest area due to illegal logging to make way for plantation areas and rampant poaching activities have become major challenges in the preservation of the Sumatran tiger population, Jauhari remarked. Moreover, the conflict between humans and the big cat species is also high. The BKSDA has prioritized a program to restore 1,500 hectares of land in the conservation area into a forest to provide a suitable habitat for the wildlife. The local authority also proposed to the government to declare Taman Buru Semidang Bukit Kabu as a wildlife reserve area. “Since there are other protected animals apart from the Sumatran tigers, such as siamang (an arboreal black-furred gibbon) and sun bears in the area,” Jauhari stated. By offering the right habitat, the population of the critically endangered species would increase and prevent them from becoming extinct, Jauhari added. The Sumatran tiger is a rare subspecies that inhabits the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The big cat has been listed as a critically endangered animal on the IUCN Red List, as its population is showing a declining trend. The Sumatran tiger is the only surviving member of the Sunda Islands group of tigers that included the now extinct Bali tiger and Javan tiger. (ant)

Raja Ampat to organize various festivals to lure tourists

SORONG - The district administration of Raja Ampat in West Papua Province will organize various festivals to lure tourists to the island.
The planned festivals will be part of the tourism campaign for the region, according to the Head of Raja Ampat tourism office, Yusdi Lamatenggo, on Saturday (Jan. 21). This years list of festivals include a maritime festival, a flute and drum festival, the Wonderful Misol festival, the Wonderful Salawati festival, the Wonderful Waigeo festival, a fish cooking festival and a Red and White festival. There will also be a spiritual festival, a blue sea festival, the Raja Ampat Fair and the Raja Ampat childrens reading festival. The events are also intended to preserve and promote the regions local culture and arts, he added. In an effort to improve transportion access to Raja Ampat, the government has also launched several key infrastructure projects on the islands. Regular transportation will be made available from the regional capital of Waisai to other islands, includ-
ing Misol Island. “Foreign and local tourists will now be able to visit the islands without having to hire expensive speedboats,” explained Lamatenggo. The Wing Air Lion Group will also operate direct return flights from Jakarta to Manado and Waisai to improve the access to West Papua from outside the region, he said. “At the moment, tourists wishing to visit Raja Ampat have to take a long flight from Jakarta to Sorong,” he added. The Indonesian archipelago of Raja Ampat, fondly called the Living Eden or Paradise on Earth, was a lesser-known tourist destination and was familiar only to intrepid travelers and avid divers. Considered to be a crown jewel in Indonesia, Raja Ampat has crystal clear turquoise waters and islands covered by dense green forests and mangrove swamps. Located in an area called the “Coral Triangle” between the Pacific and Indian oceans in eastern Indonesias West Papua province, the world is now taking notice of Raja Ampat after the Indonesian government intensified its tourism campaign to promote the region. The Dallas Mavericks blitzed Los Angeles in the second quarter and handed the Lakers the worst loss in franchise history, 122-73. “We have teaching points, but what I say to them behind those doors, that is between us,” Lakers coach Luke Walton said. “I think they understand and would agree and would feel inside the same way that I feel.” It was the Mavericks’ largest margin of victory and 13th consecutive win against the Lakers. The Dallas Mavericks blitzed Los Angeles in the second quarter and handed the Lakers the worst loss in franchise history, 122-73. “We have teaching points, but what I say to them behind those doors, that is between us,” Lakers coach Luke Walton said. “I think they understand and would agree and would feel inside the same way that I feel.” It was the Mavericks’ largest margin of victory and 13th consecutive win against the Lakers. Dallas missed its first 50-point victory since a win over Philadelphia on Nov. 13, 2014. Storms continue slamming U.S. South after killing at least 18
TAMPA - A dangerous weekend weather system killed at least 18 people in the U.S. South, with Georgia officials reporting more than a dozen deaths on Sunday after severe thunderstorms and tornadoes buffeted several states. Seven people died in Cook County, Georgia, state emergency managers said, with a mobile home park particularly hard hit, according to reports. Photos showed collapsed buildings, destroyed rooftops, toppled trees and debris-littered fields. Georgia Governor Nathan Deal declared an emergency for seven counties in the south-central part of the state, warning that dangerous conditions persisted as wind and flood warnings remained in effect for much of the state early on Monday. “I urge all Georgians to exercise caution and vigilance in order to remain safe and prevent further loss of life or injuries,” Deal said in a news release. First Baptist Church Adel, located in the Cook County seat near the Florida-Georgia state line, was sheltering more than 50 people, said pastor Bill Marlette, who had just helped inform a family that two of their relatives were among the dead.
“There’s a lot of hurting people right now,” he said in a telephone interview. “There’s just a sense of shock.” The storms in Georgia, which killed 14 people, followed a predawn tornado in Mississippi on Saturday that killed four. Severe weather also injured more than 50 others and damaged about 480 homes in Mississippi. A few storms continued to threatened coastal areas in Georgia on Sunday night, said Mark McKinnon, a spokesman for the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency. The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Rome and Calhoun until 3.30 a.m. EST, advising residents to move to higher ground. The system prompted forecasters to issue a rare “high risk” warning of severe storms threatening parts of southern Georgia, north and central Florida and Alabama on Sunday, the first such warning since 2014. South Carolina could also see severe weather. In Alabama, some 29,000 power outages were reported as of Sunday afternoon, Alabama Power said. World must not miss early signals of any flu pandemic - WHO GENEVA - The World Health Organization called on all countries to monitor closely outbreaks of deadly avian influenza in birds and poultry and to report promptly any human cases that could signal the start of a flu pandemic. Different strains of bird flu have been spreading across Europe and Asia since late last year, leading to large-scale slaughtering of poultry in certain countries and some human deaths in China. Nearly 40 countries have reported new outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza in poultry or wild birds since November, according to the WHO. “The rapidly expanding geographical distribution of these outbreaks and the number of virus strains currently co-circulating have put WHO on high alert,” Margaret Chan told the start of the U.N. agency’s 10-day executive board. The new H5N6 strain causing severe outbreaks in Asia was created by gene-swapping among four different viruses, she said. The world is better prepared for the next influenza pandemic - fol-
lowing the H1N1 pandemic that circled the world in 2009-2010 “but not at all well enough”, Chan said. In China, there has been a “sudden and steep increase” in human cases of H7N9 since December and the WHO has not been able to rule out limited human-to-human spread in two clusters of human cases although no sustained spread has been detected thus far, she said. Under the International Health Regulations, a binding legal instrument, WHO’s 194 member states are required to detect and report human cases promptly, Chan said, adding: “We cannot afford to miss the early signals.” China’s delegation, led by Zhang Yang of the National Health and Family Planning Commission, told the Geneva meeting China would carry out its obligations on communicating and responding to any outbreaks. “Currently H7N9 overall statistics remains the same,” Zhang said. “China will continue to strengthen its cooperation and exchange with WHO in this regard.” (rtr)
BENGKULU - The Natural Resource Conservation Agency (BKSDA) of Bengkulu Province has estimated that only 17 Sumatran tigers (Panthera tigris sumatra) exist in the provinces forest. Coordinator of Forest Ecosystem Control of BKSDA BengkuluLampung Said Jauhari stated here on Monday that based on last years observation and data gathered from human-animal conflict reports and patrol, it was estimated that the population of Sumatran tigers in Bengkulu reached 17. The government has set a target to increase the population of Sumatran tigers by three percent every year, Jauhari noted. However, fragmentation of the forest area due to illegal logging to make way for plantation areas and rampant poaching activities have become major challenges in the preservation of the Sumatran tiger population, Jauhari remarked. Moreover, the conflict between humans and the big cat species is also high. Seluma District has recorded the highest incidents of human-tiger conflict, followed by North Bengkulu District. “To increase the population of this critically endangered animal, we are prioritizing the protection of forests, which serve as their
habitat,” Jauhari pointed out. Taman Buru Semidang Bukit Kabu, which covers an area of 9,000 hectares in Seluma District, is considered to be the home of the Sumatran tigers. The BKSDA has prioritized a program to restore 1,500 hectares of land in the conservation area into a forest to provide a suitable habitat for the wildlife. The local authority also proposed to the government to declare Taman Buru Semidang Bukit Kabu as a wildlife reserve area. “Since there are other protected animals apart from the Sumatran tigers, such as siamang (an arboreal black-furred gibbon) and sun bears in the area,” Jauhari stated. By offering the right habitat, the population of the critically endangered species would increase and prevent them from becoming extinct, Jauhari added. The Sumatran tiger is a rare subspecies that inhabits the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The big cat has been listed as a critically endangered animal on the IUCN Red List, as its population is showing a declining trend. The Sumatran tiger is the only surviving member of the Sunda Islands group of tigers that included the now extinct Bali tiger and Javan tiger. (ant)

Raja Ampat to organize various festivals to lure tourists

SORONG - The district administration of Raja Ampat in West Papua Province will organize various festivals to lure tourists to the island.
The planned festivals will be part of the tourism campaign for the region, according to the Head of Raja Ampat tourism office, Yusdi Lamatenggo, on Saturday (Jan. 21). This years list of festivals include a maritime festival, a flute and drum festival, the Wonderful Misol festival, the Wonderful Salawati festival, the Wonderful Waigeo festival, a fish cooking festival and a Red and White festival. There will also be a spiritual festival, a blue sea festival, the Raja Ampat Fair and the Raja Ampat childrens reading festival. The events are also intended to preserve and promote the regions local culture and arts, he added. In an effort to improve transportion access to Raja Ampat, the government has also launched several key infrastructure projects on the islands. Regular transportation will be made available from the regional capital of Waisai to other islands, includ-
ing Misol Island. “Foreign and local tourists will now be able to visit the islands without having to hire expensive speedboats,” explained Lamatenggo. The Wing Air Lion Group will also operate direct return flights from Jakarta to Manado and Waisai to improve the access to West Papua from outside the region, he said. “At the moment, tourists wishing to visit Raja Ampat have to take a long flight from Jakarta to Sorong,” he added. The Indonesian archipelago of Raja Ampat, fondly called the Living Eden or Paradise on Earth, was a lesser-known tourist destination and was familiar only to intrepid travelers and avid divers. Considered to be a crown jewel in Indonesia, Raja Ampat has crystal clear turquoise waters and islands covered by dense green forests and mangrove swamps. Located in an area called the “Coral Triangle” between the Pacific and Indian oceans in eastern Indonesias West Papua province, the world is now taking notice of Raja Ampat after the Indonesian government intensified its tourism campaign to promote the region. LONDON - Emerging stocks gained and Mexico’s peso led a currencies rally on Monday as markets took a breather following Donald Trump’s inauguration as U.S. president, but Turkey’s lira remained under pressure ahead of a crucial central bank meeting.
MSCI’s emerging markets index snapped a two-day losing streak to rise 0.6 percent, lifted by bourses in Asia and gains in South Africa. The gains came in the wake of the dollar sliding broadly to touch its weakest level in six weeks after Trump struck a protectionist tone in his debut speech, sowing doubts on the upbeat outlook for the U.S. economy which had been fuelled by his pledges of tax cuts and stimulus. “The pressure remains on the dollar, and that is causing a general positive sentiment towards emerging markets ... investors are starting to doubt just how much he will deliver,” said Per Hammarlund, chief emerging markets strategist at SEB. “It is just a temporary breather, it is unlikely to last. As we have sen before, he may be quiet for a short time or shift his focus to something else, but ... we will not see him backtrack on his suspicious attitude on trade with cheaper countries such as China and Mexico.” Mexico’s peso, which had born the brunt of investor
angst over Trump’s policies, led the rally across currencies, gaining nearly 1 percent and trading at its strongest in 13-days. It had chalked up its biggest gains in more than two months on Friday after Trump did not mention the country directly in his inauguration speech. South Africa’s rand nearly matched those gains while Russia’s rouble struggled 0.4 percent stronger despite oil prices reversing their initial gains and falling 1 percent. Turkey’s lira remained the exception however, weakening as much as 0.5 percent as investors showed nerves ahead of a central bank meeting on Tuesday widely seen as a major credibility test in the face of a tumbling currency. Fifteen out of 18 economists polled by Reuters expect the central bank to increase its benchmark repo rate, with nine of them forecasting an increase of 50 basis points. “The lira has stabilised in the last few days ... There is a substantial risk that the central bank will not hike at all,” said Hammarlund. “The problem is: It will then just be a matter of time before there will be another run on the lira.” Israel’s central bank is expected to keep interest rates at a record low of 0.1 percent for the 23rd month in a row when it announces it decision later in the day. China, Philippines agree to cooperate on 30 projects worth $3.7 bln
BEIJING - China has agreed to cooperate with the Philippines on 30 projects worth $3.7 billion focusing on poverty reduction, the two countries said after a meeting in Beijing on Monday. Chinese Commerce Minister Gao Hucheng announced the deals without giving details, saying it was an “initial batch” of projects that still needed to be finalised and paperwork still needed to be processed by the banks involved. Philippine Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez said he had a “very productive” meeting with Gao and they had discussed large projects in rural areas, as well as some smaller projects. The deal is the first announcement from a two-day visit by a Philippine cabinet delegation to China that comes three months after President Rodrigo Duterte visited Beijing to pave the way for new commercial alliances. China has welcomed Duterte’s foreign policy shift away from traditional ally the United States and towards doing more regional deals for loans and business under his “pro-Filipino” policy. Relations between the Philippines and China “fully recovered” after Duterte’s visit, and “China supports president Duterte to lead the Philippines people in developing their economy,” Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a regular news briefing on Monday.
Chinese Vice Premier Wang Yang told the Philippines’ delegation that the two countries were friends and there was enormous potential to develop trade and business ties, state news agency Xinhua said. Both countries should continue to push for the healthy development of relations, Wang added. Chinese officials pledged $15 billion of investment to the Philippines during Duterte’s visit in October, according to the Philippine finance department. Asked whether U.S. President Donald Trump’s economic policies would affect commercial ties between China and the Philippines, Dominguez said: “It’s better to be with good friends.” “I’m not sure at this moment exactly what the new U.S. policies, but I believe that the reorientation of our president to our neighbours really was very smart,” Dominguez told reporters. The Philippine delegation is due to meet Vice Premier Wang Yang at Zhongnanhai, the Beijing complex that houses China’s central government, later on Monday. The Philippine team on the trip includes Duterte’s finance, budget, economic, public works and transport secretaries. In Bangli we know an artist of wayang wong from Sulahan, Susut, I Dewa Gede Bakti. He explained that based on its genre the wayang wong belongs to bebali (semi sacred) art. The wayang wong is usually performed at temples in relation to religious ceremonies. Based on its storyline, the wayang wong is divided into two, namely the Ramayana and the parwa. Wayang wong of Ramayana is a puppet show whose storyline is taken from the Ramayana epic, while the parwa tells about the storyline of Mahabharata epic. Ordinarily, the parwa dancers do not use the property like mask as found in the wayang wong of Ramayana. Further, he explained that the dancers of wayang wong make bilingual conversations namely in Old Javanese and Balinese language in the show. Old Javanese language is spoken by the dancers playing the main characters, while Balinese language is spoken by dancers portraying as clown. “Clown has the most difficult role. Apart from having to make jokes, he must also serve as an interpreter,” he explained. According to this artist who is also the Secretary in the Bangli Culture and Tourism Agency, though wayang
wong has existed since the days of Waturenggong administration, until now he recognized that this art still exists. It is evident from the persistence of wayang wong in temple ceremonies at several villages in Bangli. Habitually the current younger generation is rarely interested in learning this art because is it hard to learn the languages, namely the Old Javanese and Balinese language. “Thankfully younger generation at Sulahan village has quite high interest in becoming the successors of wayang wong dancers, so that wayang wong can remain to survive until these days,” he said. Abrasion at Pebuahan increasingly serious
NEGARA - Abrasion on Pebuahan Beach, Banyubiru, Negara, is now getting worse. This has been taking place beach since the 2010s. Aside from devastating the coastline of about 2 kilometers, several buildings of Islamic school and residences, including grilled fish stalls and fishing boat moorings are also ferociously eroded by waves. Moreover, tidal waves on new moon hit again the coastal areas of Pebuahan.
The severity of impact and damage occurred in southern coastal areas of Jembrana due to abrasion has not yet got a quick handling from the government. Moreover, the handling carried out so far is considered less maximal and comprehensive so that the damage caused by tidal waves is increasingly more serious and washes away the land and threatens the life of coastal communities. As observation, such condition caused a number of buildings of grilled fish stalls owned by local residents to collapse due to brunt abrasion taking place in the evening. Similarly, the revetment built by stall owners to protect the remaining buildings was also damaged as swept away by the waves. Moreover, every full moon and new moon, the seawater is ensured to come ashore and the newly-paved village roads is also threatened to drift. This can be observed when getting into the entrance of culinary grilled fish area, where partial road section along the coast has been eroded and it is only two meters from the shoreline. A resident of Pebuahan, Suyanto, claimed that four units of his gazebo have disappeared after washed away by the waves. On last new moon, not long ago, the seawater went up again. Residents are working hard to create a makeshift breakwater, but it remains to get eroded due to swift waves. Head of the Jembrana Public Works, Spatial Planning and Settlement Agency, I Gusti Putu Merthadana, when confirmed on Sunday (Jan. 22) said that although the local government has submitted proposal for the handling of the entire beach experiencing abrasion in Jembrana to central government, until now there has been no reply from the central public works, chiefly the Bali-Penida River Agency. He said the last handling to the abrasion was carried out in 2015, namely on the beach of Cupel and Baluk village. He suspected that a number of other regions in Bali also experience abrasion so that the handling requires great budget. Therefore, his agency can only wait for the turn of the handling. The handling of coastal abrasion at Pebuahan, he added, has been proposed several years ago and studies have been undertaken for several times by Bali-Penida River Agency. However, there is no certainty regarding the handling so far. Other proposals of the abrasion handling will be submitted again to central government in 2017. Hopefully, the coastal abrasion handling at Pebuahan could be realized this year. He mentioned that along the 72 km of coastline owned by Jembrana spreading from Gilimanuk to Pengeragoan there are 22 damaged points due to abrasion. It also includes some tourist areas such as Medewi, Pekutatan and Pebuahan. According to him, his agency has proposed improvement to the Ministry of Public Works through the Bali-Penida River Agency for the handling of coastal abrasion. Migrant worker from Buleleng arrested by police in America SINGARAJA - An Indonesian migrant worker (TKI) from Buleleng is reported to get involved in a legal case overseas. The worker identified as Gede ST, 26, was alleged to get involved in a case of sexual abuse against minor in the United States. Gede ST was arrested by police to undergo further investigation. Allegation on the immoral case was at issue on one of the local news portals, 10-ABC, that reported if Gede ST from Giri Emas village, Sawan, was arrested by Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) at Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was arrested on suspicion of child sexual abuse against a 15year-old American citizen. The incident occurred on Sunday (Jan. 15) aboard where he works. At the beginning, Gede ST met a 15-year-old girl whose identity was made secret. Both were kissing in the hallway of the ship and then resumed into the toilet on the 12th floor. Interestingly, Gede ST and the girl made consensual love. Nevertheless, the incident was protested by the girl’s parents. The parents with anonymity then reported the case on Thursday (Jan. 19) with charges of sexual abuse against minor. The report was then followed up by police authority and resumed with the arrest on Friday (Jan. 20). Police have not explained whether the case will be further processed or not. Sunarsa, confirmed on Sunday (Jan. 22) that one of his residents faced legal problem in the United States. He said that so far the issue is still confusing, so that he could not give definite information related to the case. The information told that his resident is in Houston area, Texas, and is undergoing the legal process there. Currently Sunarsa is still waiting for official information from the government, so there is clarity regarding the fate of his resident. “So far, the information obtained from his friends aboard remains mazy. There is no clarification from the agent. Similarly, we do not know for sure regarding the charges of the case,” he said. In the meantime, Spokesperson of the government of Buleleng, Made Supartawan, did not dare to respond to the news. So far, he is still trying to get information through the Buleleng Manpower and Transmigration Agency in order to ascertain the truth of the case. If the case really happened, local government will give serious attention because it concerns with the fate of Buleleng resident working overseas. “We have made coordination with Manpower and Transmigration Agency and the certainty of the information is now still being traced. SHANGHAI - China’s decision to allow all couples to have two children instead of one has resulted in birth rates rising to the highest level since 2000, a government official said. New births in the world’s most populous nation reached 17.86 million in 2016, up around 1.4 million compared to the 2011-2015 average, said Yang Wenzhuang of the National Health and Family Planning Commission. “While the total number of women of childbearing age fell by 5 million, the number of births increased significantly, showing that the family planning policy adjustments were extremely timely and extremely effective,” he told reporters on Sunday. Worried about the costs of supporting an increasingly ageing population, China issued new guidelines in late 2015 allowing all
parents to have two children. China began implementing its controversial “one-child policy” in the 1970s in order to limit population growth, but authorities are now concerned that the country’s dwindling workforce will not be able to support an increasingly ageing population. Yang said the number of women of childbearing age was expected to decline by about 5 million a year over the 2016-2020 period, but China was hoping to keep birth rates at around 17-20 million a year. China has already made provisions to increase medical staff and the number of hospital beds in order to handle the rising number of births. The apology was the clearest admission yet of the blacklist of cultural and media figures critical of the impeached leader that has led to the arrests of her former chief of staff and the culture minister at the weekend for abuse of power. “It is distressing and shameful that the ministry, which should have been the bulwark for freedom of artistic expression and creativity, has caused questions of fairness in assisting culture and arts with a list of artists to be excluded from public support,” Vice Culture Minister Song Soo-keun said. The blacklist, part of which was seen by Reuters, contains the names of thousands of actors, writers, film directors and others. It includes acclaimed film directors like Cannes award winner Park Chan-wook, Venice Film Festival top prize winner Kim Ki-duk and actors Moon So-ri and Song Gang-ho. None was immediately available for comment. Faced with a political crisis earlier in her term, the government and state entities used the blacklist as “guidelines” to penalise artists and censor content, a special prosecutor’s office investigating an influence-
peddling scandal said last week. Park’s former chief of staff, Kim Ki-choon, and Culture Minister Cho Yoon-sun, who was the first sitting cabinet member ever to be arrested before she resigned from her post at the weekend, are charged with abuse of power and perjury. Both have denied the existence of the list, or in playing a role in drawing it up, although Cho later said she had heard of such a list. The presidential Blue House has also denied that a blacklist exists. Park was impeached by parliament in December after accusations that she colluded with long-time friend Choi Soon-sil to pressure big businesses to donate to two foundations set up to back the president’s policy initiatives. The special prosecutor’s office said on Monday it planned to investigate other conglomerates after finishing its probe of Samsung Group, the largest, whose leader has been named a suspect in the graft scandal surrounding Park. Lee also said the office may question more Samsung officials, but it was not clear whether he meant those who already had been called for questioning. Freeze-dried food and 1 bathroom: 6 simulate Mars in dome
HONOLULU — Crammed into a dome with one bathroom, six scientists will spend eight months munching on mostly freeze-dried foods — with a rare treat of Spam — and have only their small sleeping quarters to retreat to for solace. The simulated stay on Mars with a carefully selected crew of researchers embarked on a mission Thursday to gain insight into the psychological toll a similar real-life voyage would have on astronauts. It’s part of a NASAfunded human-behavior experiment that could help the space agency send humans to the red planet in the next 20 years. The man-made dome that the four men and two women call home is outfitted with futuristic white walls and an elevated sleeping platform on the world’s largest active volcano in Hawaii. The vinyl-covered shelter spans 1,200 square feet, or about the size of a small, two-bedroom house. A video released by the group shows the six scientists in matching red polo shirts arriving and entering the dome to farewell handshakes from program associates. Except for the presence of the white van that brought the group, the scene was reminiscent of the red planet — the dome set in a barren, rock-strewn and reddish landscape with distant hills giving the feel of a wind-swept and forbidding environment. “I’m looking forward to building relationships with my crew,” said mission commander James Bevington, a space scientist. “I fully anticipate coming out with five new best friends.” They will have no physical contact with people in the outside world and will work with a 20-minute delay in communications with their support crew — the time it would take for an email to reach Earth from Mars. The project will study the psychological difficulties with living in isolated, confined conditions for an extended period. NASA hopes to send humans to an asteroid in the 2020s and Mars by the 2030s. “We’re hoping to figure out how best to select individual astronauts, how to compose a crew and how to support that crew on long-duration space missions,” said principal investigator Kim Binsted, a University of Hawaii science professor.
The team members include engineers, a computer scientist, a doctoral candidate and a biomedical expert. They were selected from 700 applicants subjected to personality tests, background checks and extensive interviews. “When I started, my biggest fear was that we were going to be that crew that turned out like Biosphere 2, which wasn’t a very pretty picture,” Bevington said. The experimental greenhouse-like habitat in Arizona became a debacle in the 1990s. It housed different ecosystems and a crew of eight to try to understand what would be needed for humans to live on other planets. The participants were supposed to grow their own food and recycle their air inside the sealed glass space. But the experiment soon spiraled out of control, with the carbon dioxide level rising dangerously and plants and animals dying. The crew members grew hungry and squabbled so badly that by the time they emerged two years later, some of them weren’t speaking to each other. The University of Hawaii operates the dome, called Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation, or HISEAS, and NASA has dedicated more than $2 million to the various stages of the project. Scientists previously lived in the dome for two other long-term NASA-funded stays — one of them lasting a year, the other eight months — to study food requirements and crew cohesion. A number of other Mars simulation projects exist around the world, but one of the chief advantages of the Hawaii experiment is the rugged, Mars-like landscape, on a rocky, red plain below the summit of the world’s largest active volcano, the Big Island’s Mauna Loa. The dome has a kitchen, laboratory and bathroom, plus small sleeping quarters for each member. Unlike Biosphere 2, it won’t be airtight. To maintain the crew’s sense of isolation, bundles of food, including some canned goods and snacks, will be dropped off a distance from the dome, and the team members will send a robot to retrieve them. The participants will not be confined but will wear spacesuits whenever they step outside for geological expeditions, mapping studies or other tasks. They will wear instruments measuring their moods and proximity to other team members and use virtual reality devices to simulate familiar and comforting surroundings. (ap)

Trump’s victory creates uncertainty for wind and solar power
HONOLULU — President Donald Trump has disputed climate change, pledged a revival of coal and disparaged wind power, and his nominee to head the Energy Department was once highly skeptical of the agency’s value. What this means for states’ efforts to promote renewable energy is an open question. States that are pushing for greater reliance on wind and solar power are not quite sure what to expect as Trump takes over. Many of them depend heavily on federal renewable-energy tax credits, grants and research, much of which comes from the Energy Department. Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Trump’s pick to lead the department, presents a contradictory figure: A Texas oil promoter, he also oversaw a huge expansion of wind-energy production while governor. When he ran for president in 2011, he included Energy on a list of departments he thought should be abolished, though he disavowed the idea Thursday at his Senate confirmation hearing. “We don’t know what version of Perry is going to show up,” said Michael Webber, deputy director of the Energy Institute at the University of Texas, Austin. Renewable energy accounts for about 15 percent of the electricity generated in the United States. And 29 states have set targets for boosting their reliance on such power. Officials, experts and advocates in more than a half-dozen states with some of the most ambitious goals told The Associated Press that they are on course to meet their targets. Most said that while Trump policies could slow the expansion, they won’t stop it.
The price of harnessing the power of the sun and wind has dropped so much that in many areas of the country, experts say it could be competitive with traditional power sources such as coal and natural gas even without federal subsidies. Further, they do not expect a fast repeal of the key federal tax credits that have propelled the industry for years. Still, policies aimed at bringing more renewable power online quickly are not expected while Trump is in office. “We need to be moving faster, not slower,” said Jeff Forward, president of the trade group Renewable Energy Vermont. “I fear we’re tapping on the brakes right now.” Those who promote renewable energy are concerned because Trump has expressed doubts about whether climate change is real, even though scientists agree that it is happening and that the burning of fossil fuels is a major reason for it. Trump also has called for reviving the coal industry, which has struggled in part because of the rise of renewable energy. And he has criticized wind turbines near Palm Springs, California, both for killing birds and for looking like a “junkyard.” Perry, at his confirmation hearings, said he believes climate change is happening and that some of it is caused by human activity. He also said he favors an “all of the above” energy policy, the way he did in Texas, and wants the federal government to continue research on renewable energy. Arrangement of riverbanks continues DENPASAR - Arrangement to a number of riverbanks in Denpasar conducted by Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency (DPUPR) has been running since the past few years. This year, the arrangement program of riverbanks continues. It is meant to minimize waste disposal into the river and make the river flow function properly. This was confirmed by the Division Head of the Denpasar Public Works Agency for Water Resources and Spatial Planning, I Gusti Ngurah Putra Sanjaya, recently. He said that in 2016 the riverbanks arranged are the Loloan River, Tagtag River and Badung River (under the bridge of Jalan Gajah Mada). The other arrangement is also conducted by the Spatial Planning and Housing
Agency (DRTP). The arrangement handled by DTRP is the riverbank of Bindu River, while the riverbank of Punggawa River is arranged by Sidakarya village. According to Putra Sanjaya, this year his division has an agenda to continue the arrangement of a number of riverbanks funded by central government. The riverbanks to be arranged include the continuation of Badung River, Tagtag River (under Youth Park) as well as the downstream of Badung River (fishing park area). In addition, the bank of Mati River will also be arranged this year. As is known, to realize cleaner and more beautiful riverbanks, the municipal government has made arrangement through the DPUPR. The riverbanks having been ar-
ranged include the banks of Bindu River at Ujung hamlet, Kesiman, Badung River from under the bridge of Jalan Gajah Mada and Tagtag River in the east of SMPN 10 Denpasar junior high school. As the initial stage of the arrangement, each is worked on along 80 meters on the right and left side of the river flow. Piles of rubbish at Kidul Market complained by people BANGLI - Several people in the neighborhood of Pule hamlet complained about the mounting piles of rubbish in the area behind Kidul Market, Bangli. Stench of the rubbish is very disturbing residents, especially those living near the waste disposal site. As the information compiled, the mounting piles of rubbish spread stench because they have never been transported by janitor since the past five days. A resident of Pule hamlet, Made Darma, said on Friday (Jan. 20) that existence of the piles of rubbish in the back area of Kidul Market precisely on the north of Nataran Er Malet Temple is disturbing the comfort of residents. Due to the piles of rubbish consisting of various merchandise remnants owned by market merchants exuded the stench to a radius of several meters. Darma said that the rubbish is usually taken regularly by janitor every afternoon. However, since the past five days the rubbish in the containers has never been transported, and was allowed to accumulate to overflow onto the streets.
“The rubbish has not been transported for five days. I do not know whether the officers are on strike or other. The stench is already disturbing,” he said. As a resident, he strongly objected to the piles of rubbish that are not transported. He also hoped that relevant agencies could immediately come down to deal with the problem. Other than Made Darma, the piles of rubbish having not been transported for the past five days are also complained by merchants of food stall located not far from the location of temporary disposal site. The merchant who was reluctant to be named claimed that stench of the rubbish causes decline in the number of visiting shoppers. Responding to such condition, he claimed to have delivered to one of the janitors so as to immediately transport the rubbish. Unfortunately, the report did not get any follow up. “It happened because the garbage truck is damaged. I suggest if the truck is damaged why it does not rent a truck to transport it? It is said that it has no budget for it,” he said. In the meantime, the head of
the Bangli Environment Agency, Ida Ayu Gede Yudi Sutha, as confirmed last Saturday admitted that the rubbish transportation in Bangli and Kayuamba cannot be done optimally recently due to limitations of the fleet. So far, the government of Bangli has a total of 12 garbage trucks, where five of them are now out of order and being repaired at workshop. “They have been damaged from 5 to 6 days ago. Now, they are repaired at workshop,” he said. Yudhi Sutha said that damages to the garbage trucks happen due to age factor of the vehicles. On average, the garbage trucks owned by the Bangli Environment Agency have been over twenty years old. Nevertheless, so far her agency has been already trying to maximize the existing trucks to transport the rubbish, including at the Kidul Market. As reported, the field officers at Kidul Market have routinely transported the rubbish every day. “Maybe it is the new pile. According to Astawa, his agency planned the construction of bridge after the landslide eroded the road connecting Petang to Pelaga in late 2016. The budget needed approximately reaches IDR 60-70 billion for the establishment of bridge with the length of around 100 meters. “For permanent solution, we are going to build a bridge because it will probably get eroded by landslides in the area,” he added. BANGLI - Thick fog shrouding the area of Penelokan tourist attraction, Kintamani, in the past few days seems to greatly impact the tourist visit. Moreover, foggy condition of the area causes reduction in tourist arrival to Kintamani by 15 percent. This was expressed by the Head of Destination Development at the Bangli Culture and Tourism Agency, I Wayan Bona, on Sunday (Jan. 22). “Well, thick fog has indeed shrouded Kintamani area in the past few days. Such foggy condition obviously causes a decrease in the travelers wishing to spend holidays at the destination,” he said Bona estimated that tourist visit to Penelokan decreased by 15 percent from regular days with fine weather condition. Obviously, such condition greatly affects the daily income. “It has an impact on the revenue. If tourist visit decreases, obviously the revenue will also
declines,” he said He said that travelers making a visit to Penelokan because they want to see the object of Lake Batur and Mount Batur. If it is foggy, travelers cannot enjoy the scenery below. “At Penelokan we’re selling lake view to visitors. If mountain, lake and other views are not visible due to covered in fog what do they want to see? They come because definitely want to see the panorama underneath,” he said. Such thick fog deeply impacts visitors’ visibility as it is only reaching 20-30 meters. On that account, motorcyclists and car drivers are hoped to remain cautious when driving, so that no accidents will occur due to the short visibility. “Motorcyclists should turn on the lights of their vehicle. Singer Madonna defends ‘blowing up the White House’ remark
WASHINGTON - Pop singer Madonna, who said in a profanity-laced speech at Saturday’s Women’s March in Washington, D.C., that she had thought about “blowing up the White House,” said on Sunday that she was speaking metaphorically.
Madonna’s speech, which was criticized on social media, led some television networks to abruptly stop their live feeds of the march, which drew hundreds of thousands of people in demonstrations across the United States to protest the election of Donald Trump as president. “I am not a violent person,” the singer songwriter said on Instagram. “I spoke in metaphor and I shared two ways of looking at things - one was to be hopeful, and one was to feel anger and outrage, which I have personally felt.” The 58-year-old led the crowd on Saturday in chants of, “Yes, we’re ready” to take on policies promoted by Trump, who alienated many women during the election campaign with comments’ about rivals’ attractiveness and promises to outlaw or diminish abortion rights. Trump’s comments in a decade-old video declaring that women would allow him, as a celebrity, to kiss and grope them without their consent further outraged many women. But Madonna preceded the chants with coarse words for critics of the march. “To our detractors that insist that this march will never add up to anything, fuck you,” the pop star said. SEOUL - Samsung Electronics Co Ltd indicated on Monday that its latest flagship Galaxy S smartphone could be delayed as it pledged to enhance product safety following an investigation into the cause of fires in its premium Note 7 devices. Wrapping up its months-long probe, the world’s top smartphone maker said faulty batteries from two suppliers were to blame for a product failure that wiped $5.3 billion off its operating profit. Samsung mobile chief Koh Dong-jin said procedures had been put in place to avoid a repeat of the fires as the South Korean firm prepares to launch the Galaxy S8, its first premium handset since the Note 7’s demise. “The lessons of this incident are deeply reflected in our culture and process,” Koh told reporters at a press briefing. “Samsung Electronics will be working hard to regain consumer trust.” Koh said the Galaxy S8 would not be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona

A person familiar with the matter told Reuters reselling some Note 7s as refurbished phones was an option. The firm said it has recovered 96 percent of the 3.06 million Note 7s sold to consumers. Investigations by internal and independent experts ruled out problems with the Note 7’s hardware and software. Instead, they said the batteries, which came from two suppliers, featured different manufacturing defects or design flaws that caused them to short-circuit. “The odds that two different suppliers had issue with the same phone is an extremely low likelihood and may signal we have reached an in-
flection point in smartphone battery technology,” said Patrick Moorhead, president of technology analyst and advisory firm Moor Insights & Strategy. Samsung did not name the suppliers on Monday but previously identified them as affiliate Samsung SDI Co Ltd and China’s Amperex Technology Ltd (ATL). SDI said separately it would invest 150 billion won ($129 million) to improve product safety and expected to continue supplying batteries for Samsung phones. ATL declined to comment. Samsung said it accepted responsibility and would not take legal action against suppliers. The company touted longer battery life and fast charging as major improvements when it launched the Note 7. “The current situation is not largely different from that of the first recall, when Samsung pointed the finger at battery defects,” said Park Chul-wan, a former director of
the Center for Advanced Batteries at the Korea Electronics Technology Institute. Among other measures to boost safety, Samsung said it had implemented an eight-point battery check system to avoid any such problems going unnoticed again.
