‘Star Wars’ overtakes ‘Jurassic World’ for biggest global debut

LOS ANGELES - The new “Star Wars” movie has set a global opening weekend record, smashing past the previous record holder “Jurassic World” to rake in $529 million, Disney said on Monday. “With final numbers now in, ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ rose above estimates to post an all-time industry-high $248 million domestically plus $281 million internationally for an all-time record global debut of $529 million since opening December 16,” the company said in a statement. It said the figure does not include box office receipts from India and Greece, where the movie opens this week or from China, the world’s second biggest film market where it opens on January 9. “Jurassic World” previously held the record for global launch with $524.9 million. “Our sole focus has been creating a film that delivers that one-of-a-kind Star Wars experience, and director J.J. Abrams, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and the Lucasfilm team have outdone themselves,” Disney chairman Alan Horn said at the weekend. The highly anticipated seventh installment of the space saga has blazed a record-setting trail since its domestic debut last Thursday, taking the prize for highestgrossing domestic opening night with $57 million and biggest domestic single-day

sales Friday with $120.5 million. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” previously held both records at $43.5 million for an opening night and $91 million for a first day. As far as all-time box office sales, two films by James Cameron hold the record -- “Avatar” ($2.78 billion) and “Titanic” ($2.18 billion), and it is expected that “The Force Awakens” might unseat both. “’Star Wars’ is officially the biggest thing to happen in the known box office universe now that it has taken the best debuts records -- domestic and worldwide -- from ‘Jurassic World’,” said Jeff Bock, box office analyst at Exhibitor Relations. “The industry is expecting amazing holds this upcoming weekend and through the holidays, and if that happens, ‘Avatar’ and its records may be the next thing to fall in the face of the power of the force.” Disney said the galactic success of the movie has already enabled the company to cross the $5 billion mark in global box office receipts in a calendar year for the first time ever, surpassing the previous record of $4.73 billion set in 2013. “The Force Awakens” picks up the inter-

galactic story of good versus evil 30 years on from “The Return of the Jedi,” the last episode of the original trilogy. The trio of heroes who appeared in the first of the blockbusters in 1977 -- smuggler Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), leader of the rebel alliance, and her twin brother Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) -- are all back and played by the actors that “Star Wars” first made famous. Also debuting at the box office in the top 10 this weekend were four other films, whose numbers seemed miniscule compared to the “Star Wars” hauling. The animated “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip,” came in second place in its first weekend, with $14.3 million, according to box office tracker Exhibitor Relations. In third and also in its debut weekend was “Sisters,” starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as two siblings throwing one last party in their childhood home before it is sold. It earned only $14 million. “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay -- Part 2,” the fourth and last movie in the blockbuster franchise that turned Jennifer Lawrence into a Hollywood megastar, earned $5.7 million, falling to fourth place in its fifth week in theaters. Security conditions affect tourism

DENPASAR - Security condition greatly affects the survival of a tourist destination, and Bali is no exemption. No tourist attraction can rely solely on its natural surroundings, or its social and cultural life as unique selling points, when competing against other destinations. “Bali has become a leading tourist destination in Indonesia and is known throughout the world because its has a unique culture that is inspired by the noble values of Hinduism, integrated with nature and sustainable preservation and supported by the friendliness of its people. These unique attributes of Bali however are in vain if security and comfort are disrupted,” said Chairman of the Indonesian Tourism Intellectuals Association (ICPI) Bali, I Putu Anom, recently. “Towards the end of 2015, there were in fact some disruptions to tourism in Bali, with the eruption of Mt, Raung in East java and later the eruption of Mt. Baturiti in Lombok, both of which grounded many international and local flights into Bali’s Ngurah Rai Internatinoal Airport. Many airlines had to cancel their flights from overseas,” said Anom. He added that there were also “external distractions that occurred in the aftermath of the devastating bombings in France. The issue of terrorism and the radical group known as ISIS that is threatening the world also impacted Indonesia and its leading tourist destination: Bali.” Anom explained that recent disturbances are also related to security, citing the recent clashes between two major gangs in Bali that resulted in a some casualties. Such incidents, he said, can tarnish the image of Bali that is famous for its friendliness changing it instead to one of brutality. On that account, Balinese people have to be aware that such clashes, conflict and violence are detrimental to everyone. “Let us always maintain security and comfort so that Bali remains peaceful. It is everyone’s duty to maintain security and comfort -including the military, police officers, political officials, employers, employees as well as all other members society,” he said. (kmb32)

Wiraputra expressed their views saying that, given the size of the budget, Bali’s bureaucrats are expected to dare to make breakthroughs and that synergistic management across districts should

become habituated, in-lieu of sectorial ego battles. It is expected that the management of the budget be of service to rescuing the space, culture and people of Bali from their present struggles. Bureaucrats in Bali are also reminded to do adequate mapping of the load and problems of Bali in 2016, and to focus on the scale of priorities and also that de-

velopment targets need to be clear and measurable. The most serious problem to be addressed is the safeguarding of Bali’s space and culture. Given that both of these are the backbone of the spirit of development in Bali, issues related to their preservation are in urgent need of being resolved. Another problem that needs attention is the lack of policy regarding

rural-based infrastructure development. Bureaucrats and parliamentarians in Bali need to position and give space to the resurrection of Balinese human resources so that it can become competitive in nabbing economic opportunities. “Bali should dare to make breakthroughs using the budget that is allocated. Pursuing revenue target, Badung taxes illegal villas

THE LARGE amount of potential taxes that are lost - especially in the tourism sector have made the Badung Revenue Services (Dispenda) become more diligent in reaching their target. In order to maximize potential revenues, not only are taxpayers such as hotels and restaurants being pursued, but now illegal villas in the region are being scrutinized. According to Head of the Badung Revenue Service, I Wayan Adi Arnawa, they are no longer distinguishing between licensed and unlicensed properties, because the hotel and restaurant tax in tourist accommodations is calculated based not the number of transactions that occur. “I think that villas in Badung must be taxed whether they are licensed or not. We are functioning according to the principal that when there is a transaction, it is obligatory that it be taxed” said Arnawa. Whether an accommodation has an operational permit or not is irrelevant he affirmed. “It (the licensing—Ed) is not our business but when when they are not collected tax losses occur,” he said. The commitment of the Badung Revenue Service to imposing the hotel and restaurant tax regardless of legality, received positive a response from the Chairman of the Bali Villa Association (BVA), Mangku Wayan Sutedja. Moreover, he encouraged the government to not only see things in terms of tax revenues but also in terms of business legality. “I agree with the measures being taken by the Revenue Service, that will help make the existence of accommodations -especially

villas in Badung, clearer. They should snot be allowed to operate without a license and not pay taxes anyway,” said Suteja. He argued that by imposing taxes on all villas that are operating as accommodations, necessarily their legality on terms of being a business, will be revealed. “If they have been taxed, automatically their license can be known. If they’re unlicensed, yes ... direct them to immediately submit a request for a license from the government. If they are violation of business zones, they can be disciplined. Also if they do have a license but have not paid their taxes, they scan then be immediately made to do so,” he explained. Currently, said Suteja, there are approximately 1,200 villas in Bali, 700 villas of which are located in Badung, in areas like Legian, Seminyak and Kuta, while the remaining 500 villas are scattered about in Tabanan, Buleleng, Klungkung, Gianyar and other areas. Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

NEW YORK — The latest iPhones come with the ability to turn still images into video — just like magic — but sharing options had been limited to other Apple apps. That’s changing as Facebook, one of the leading forums for photo sharing, adds Apple’s Live Photos feature to Facebook’s iPhone and iPad app. Facebook will start offering it Monday to a limited number of users initially, with a broader rollout planned in the coming weeks. Facebook’s support follows a similar move by Yahoo’s Tumblr service. With Live Photos on the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, every still shot is accompanied by a threesecond video, with sound. For instance, you can snap a shot of your kid blowing out birthday candles — and get video showing the flame going out as everyone sings “Happy Birthday.” The phone automatically records video in the background when the camera app is open. The recording is immediately discarded if you do nothing. When you snap a shot, the phone saves a second and

a half of video leading to that shot and continues recording until you get three seconds in all. Why not just take video? You might not know ahead of time when you’ll encounter a scene lending itself to video. With Live Photos, you always get the video option — unless you turn the feature off. But sharing had been limited to certain Apple apps — such as the texting app Messages, but not Mail. With tools Apple is making available to third parties, sharing can now be done through Facebook and Tumblr, too. Your friend merely needs to tap and hold the photo to watch the image animate. The iPhone 6s models are required for creating Live Photos, but viewing can also be done on older iPhones and iPads with the latest operating system. On Android and Web browsers, you get only the still images. Besides Facebook and Tumblr, Getty Images is also offering a selection of Live Photos through its app. It’s a curated selection, though, rather than a mechanism for sharing photos with friends. (ap)

It depicts the target as a red dot moving around the room, occupying a chair and speeding up or slowing down. The wireless signals used to track a person’s motions also can measure the individual’s breathing and heart rate — and potentially identify the person based on the shape of his or her skeleton, said researcher Zach Kabelac. “The person won’t be wearing anything on them, and the person it’s tracking doesn’t even need to know the device is there,” Kabelac said. “If something unfortunate happens to them, like a fall, the device will contact the caregiver that they chose to alert” by generating a text message or an email, he added. That makes health care applications especially interesting, Katabi said. But she also sees military and

law enforcement possibilities — particularly in hostage situations. “You don’t want to send the police inside without knowing where the people are standing or where the hostages are,” she said. “If there is someone with a gun, where they are standing?” A company set up to market the technology, now dubbed Emerald, will spin out of the MIT lab next year, with a goal of marketing the device early in 2017, and it’s expected to sell for $250 to $300, Adib said. The team is working to make the device smaller and to develop an interface that will let users configure it through a smartphone app, Katabi added. The technology raises questions about privacy rights and intrusion, and Adib said the team gave serious thought to those implications. “The user interface will be friendly for setting it up and using it at home, but it will be very hard to use it to track someone just by pointing it at their wall,” he said. Number of British tourists visiting Bali up 28.82 percent DENPASAR - Bali provincial tourism office has noted that the number of British travelers visiting Bali rose by 28.82 percent, with the maximum number of foreign tourists visiting Bali in October 2015. “This is very encouraging for Bali’s tourism sector at a time when economic growth has been less favorable,” Bali tourism observer Made Sudana said. The number of British tourists flying directly from their country to Bali during January-October 2015 was 138,795, a 28.82 percent increase compared to the same period in 2014 when the number was recorded at 107,745 people. The British tourists accounted for 4.13 percent of the total 3.3 million international tourists visiting during January-October 2015. British tourists figured among the top foreign nationality tourists, following those from Korea, Singapore and Taiwan. Made Sudana explained that during January-October 2015, the number of British tourists visiting Bali was the highest among those

from the European region, followed by France (115,288), Germany (103,799) and the Netherlands (69,213). During January-October 2015, the number of travelers from Europe to Bali was 712,917. He added that foreign tourist arrivals in Bali had until now remained dominated by those from Australia, China, and Japan. Disparda appeals to tourism management to increase security

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — X-ray vision, a comic book fantasy for decades, is becoming a reality in a lab at MIT. A group of researchers led by Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Dina Katabi has developed software that uses variations in radio signals to recognize human silhouettes through walls and track their movements. Researchers say the technology will be able to help health care providers and families keep closer tabs on toddlers and the elderly, and it could be a new strategic tool for law enforcement and the military. “Think of it just like cameras, except that it’s not a camera,” said Fadel Adib, a researcher on the MIT team developing the device. “It’s a sensor that can monitor people and allow you to control devices just by pointing at them,” he said. Work began in 2012 to determine how wireless signals could be used to “see” what’s happening in another room, said Katabi, who directs the MIT Wireless Center. “At first we were just interested ... can you at all use wireless signals to detect what’s happening in occluded spaces, behind a wall, couch, something like that,” Katabi said. “It turned out that we were able to detect that. Japan says armed Chinese vessel spotted off disputed islands

TOKYO — Japan said it spotted for the first time Tuesday an armed Chinese coast guard ship near islands at the center of a long-running territorial dispute between the two Asian giants. Chinese ships regularly sail around the uninhabited islands, known as the Senkaku in Japanese and the Diaoyu in Chinese, but a Japanese coast guard spokesman said it was the first time an armed Chinese coast guard vessel had been sighted in the area. “We don’t know China’s intentions, but our response will remain unchanged, and we’ll act calmly and decisively for Japan’s safety,” said Yosuke Watanuki, a spokesman for the regional unit covering Japan’s remote southern islands. The Japanese coast guard released a photo of the ship sailing in the East China Sea. It was one of four Chinese coast guard vessels spotted in the waters Tuesday, but was the only one that was armed. DENPASAR - The project to revitilize I Gusti Ngurah Made Agung Puputan Square being carried out the provincial working unit has been going on for some time. After replacing the paving blocks, toilets started to be installed in the southeast corner of the square. Work on the project has, however been delayed for the last few weeks. Head of the Denpasar Public Works Agency, Ketut Winarta, said that the project is being carried out by the province through the PIU, therefor the Public Works agency does not know to what extent the work has been completed. “The project is not being carried out by the Denpasar Public Works,” he said. Working unit policy maker of the Bali Settlement Area Development and Building Arrangement, A.A. Budi Arnaya, when asked for his confirmation stated that there has been a delay in the execution of the project but only a slight delay, he said. “There has been a slight delay on the construction of the bathrooms,” he explained. The project with contract number KU.03.03/ PKPPB-Bali/PPK-PB/015.8 using IDR 4, 865, 116,000 worth of State Budget (APBN) funds, that was issued by the Ministry of Public Works through the Bali Public Works Agency, should have been completed by December 9, 2015.

However, on Monday work was still visibly underway. Arnaya recognizes that the project should have been completed on December 9 and explained that: “most of the work has been completed, it is just the bathrooms that haven’t been finished yet. We will fine the contractor according to the relevant Presidential Decree,” he stated. The Puputan Badung Square revitalization project was started on June 12th and according to the signboard at the site of the project, the project was scheduled to have been completed in 180 days from that date. Arnaya explained that the project fund worth IDR 4.8 billion was used to green the environment in Puputan Badung Square -especially on the north side, to make drains on Jalan Kaliasem, to repair sidewalks, replace paving block in the north, repair the stage in the south, arrange the elderly track, organize sports areas and build a new bathroom.

SHENZHEN, China - Rescuers pulled one body from a mountain of rubble on Tuesday after working through the night with drones and heavy machinery in search of more than 80 people missing since a giant flow of mud and construction waste engulfed buildings in southern China. IOM says more than 800,000 crossed into Greece from Turkey, including more than 455,000 from Syria and over 186,000 from Afghanistan. Nearly 3,700 others died trying to cross the Mediterranean in Europe’s worst refugee crisis since World War II. For nearly a decade, shoppers have been more cautious and practical about their spending, doing more bargain shopping and hunting for deals. But recently, shoppers have taken that practice a step further. They’re becoming more open to buying gifts that in the past might have been considered downright cheap. JAKARTA - Indonesian police said Monday they were on their highest terror alert after foiling plans for a suicide attack in Jakarta and arresting radicals linked to the Islamic State group. Three-day raids across Java ending Sunday saw the confiscation of explosive materials, an IS-inspired flag and nine arrests. Several of the arrested men were allegedly linked to a planned suicide bombing in Jakarta during the New Year celebrations, according to documents seized in the raids. A total of five suspects were arrested from a cell linked to the Islamic State, and four more from a cell linked to the Jemaah Islamiyah terror network behind several major assaults in Indonesia. Captain Yohanis Humiang and his five crew were taking 65 mostly Sri Lankan migrants to New Zealand when they were intercepted by Australian authorities in late May, who allegedly paid them $32,000 to return to Indonesia. WASHINGTON — Donald Trump on Monday accused Hillary Clinton of lying when she said the Islamic State group used videos of his comments about Muslims to recruit militants. The Republican presidential front-runner also took to Twitter to demand an apology from his leading Democratic opponent. “She’s a liar!” Trump told more than 6,000 people at a rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Chinese lawyer gets suspended sentence in online speech case BEIJING — One of China’s most prominent human rights lawyers is set to be freed after a Beijing court on Tuesday gave him a suspended prison sentence in a case involving online comments critical of the ruling Communist Party. The court convicted Pu Zhiqiang on charges of disturbing public order and inciting ethnic hatred, and sentenced him to three years in prison but said the sentence will be suspended for three years. Still, the guilty verdict disqualifies Pu from practicing law, and he must comply with certain restrictions and not commit crimes during the three-year period or risk being jailed. Human rights group Amnesty International welcomed the suspended sentence but condemned the guilty verdict. “Clearly it is positive that Pu Zhiqiang is unlikely to spend another night in jail, yet that cannot hide the gross injustice against him,” said William Nee, China researcher at Amnesty International in a written statement. “He is no criminal and this guilty verdict effectively shackles one of China’s bravest champions of human rights from practicing law.” The verdict also stirred mixed feelings from Pu’s supporters, who were celebrating Pu’s pending release but also argue it was an injustice to find him guilty. “After all, an innocent man has been locked up for 19 months. Under the suspended sentence, he finally can get out,” said supporter Ren Jianyu. “It’s good news but with a feeling of helplessness.” Pu’s supporters believe the case was politically driven to punish the outspoken lawyer who has become a leading figure among China’s human rights lawyers. Pu was active in defending free speech and represented artist Ai Weiwei in a tax evasion case that Ai’s supporters said was politically motivated. He also was instrumental in pushing for the eventual abolishment of the labor camp system, which allowed police to lock up people for up to four years without a trial. Since coming to power in 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping has spearheaded crackdowns on civil activists, rights lawyers and online freedom of expression, in moves aimed at snuffing out any potential threats to the Communist Party’s grip on power. Pu was detained shortly after attending a May 2014 meeting to discuss commemorating 25 years since the Tiananmen Square massacre, at a time when authorities were keeping a lid on any public commemorations of the event. Hundreds, possibly thousands, of protesters were killed in the crackdown, and the topic remains taboo in China. After a prolonged investigation, Pu stood trial on Dec. 14 — after more than 19 months in detention — for several of his online comments that questioned Beijing’s ethnic policies and poked fun at some political figures. SINGAPORE - Stan Wawrinka showed his class in both singles and doubles to lead the Singapore Slammers to victory in the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) final in front of a delighted home crowd at the Indoor Stadium on Sunday. Matches in the Asia-based mixed team tennis league are decided by games won in five one-set shootouts over various formats and Switzerland’s Wawrinka played brilliantly to ensure the Slammers overcame the Indian Aces 26-21 in a gripping finale. Renault spurned Red Bull’s efforts to help improve its Formula 1 engine because its heart was already set on reviving its works team before 2015 began, reckons Christian Horner. Talk that Renault wanted to move beyond its engine supplier role and run its own team for a third time surfaced early in the 2015 season, and Horner believes those intentions influenced its relationship with Red Bull.

“I never felt that Renault fully embraced the technical capability and simulation capability that we tried to offer and it was very clear early on that Renault weren’t happy just being a supplier,” he said. “From the back end of last year they’d been looking at becoming an entrant again.” Dissatisfied with the performance and progress of Renault’s F1 power unit project, Red Bull brought in Ilmor chief Mario Illien and set up its own engine group to try to assist.

Ilmor will continue working with Renault as it takes over Lotus to relaunch its factory F1 team next year, but Horner said the French firm had initially been against Illien being involved. “Renault went through some management changes towards the end of last year and there was an awful lot of talk going on,” said Horner. “We introduced Mario Illien to them. There was resistance to using Mario initially.

“We created an engine group to support. There was not the smoothest of relationships between Milton Keynes and Viry, and out of that obviously grew frustration. “There was always a reluctance to fully embrace Red Bull as a technical partner and there was a difference of opinion technically and over where the weaknesses of the engine were. “Mario developed a concept for Renault and Renault, in parallel, ran

their own projects - the outcome of which was the D-spec. “We invested quite a lot into creating a group and employing some specialists and making capacity available, so it’s frustrating that that didn’t really bring anything to fruition.” With concerted efforts to secure an alternative engine supply having all failed, Red Bull will continue with Renault next season after all, but running TAG Heuer-badged V6s in a restructured deal. Arsenal beats title rival Man City 2-1 in Premier League LONDON — Arsenal boosted its Premier League title hopes and dented Manchester City’s with a 2-1 victory over its rival at the Emirates Stadium on Monday. Theo Walcott gave Arsenal the lead with a ferocious low strike from the edge of the penalty area in the 33rd minute, and Olivier Giroud doubled the advantage with a clinical finish on the stroke of halftime. Yaya Toure pulled a goal back with a first-time, left-footed strike eight minutes from the end, but City could not find an equalizer. The win moves second-place Arsenal to 36 points, two behind leaders Leicester on 38. City is third on 32. “For us it was a vital game,” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. “It is too early to say to win the league but it strengthens our

belief. You earn the right to win these games and it is important to realize you must fight for every game.” In the only bad news of the night for Gunners fans, Alexis Sanchez was scheduled to be named as a substitute against City but Wenger said he now expects the Chilean to return on Jan. 10. The striker has had a setback in recovering from a hamstring injury which has kept him out since Nov. 29. City welcomed striker Sergio Aguero back to the starting lineup for the first time since November and the first half was an intriguing encounter at times, with both teams passing the ball around confidently.

Arsenal probed patiently against City’s defense, which in turn looked to build counterattacks by swiftly playing the ball to creative midfielders David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne whenever possession was recovered. It was that tactic from Manuel Pellegrini’s side which should have yielded the opening goal, moments before it fell behind. City swept forward on the break in the 32nd, Aguero flicking the ball into the path of the onrushing De Bruyne, who had surged far beyond his marker, Nacho Monreal. As De Bruyne closed in on goal, he had Silva unmarked to his left, who would have had a simple tap-in.

Instead, he decided to shoot and his effort rolled the wrong side of the post. It turned out to be a decisive moment in the match as Arsenal ruthlessly punished the miss a minute later. Mesut Ozil brought the ball into the final third and played a low pass into Walcott, who shifted onto his right foot and whipped a shot low into the far corner, beyond the reach of outstretched City goalkeeper Joe Hart. The second came on the stroke of halftime. Ozil, the king of assists, was again the provider by steering a pass neatly into the stride of Giroud, who drilled a left-footed shot through Hart’s legs and into the far corner for his 10th league goal this season. The Foxes were rock bottom for most of last season but pulled off a great escape to stay up after winning seven of their last nine matches to finish 14th. Claudio Ranieri’s men now head into Christmas as top of the pack, two points ahead of second-placed Arsenal after 17 games. Five of the last six teams who have topped the league at Christmas have gone on to lift the trophy come May. “We are underdogs at the moment and people are waiting for us to fail. PRAGUE — Former Newcastle goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek collapsed while running after suffering a cardiac arrest Sunday night and is in an induced coma in the Czech Republic. The 47-year-old Srnicek made 150 appearances for the Magpies 1991 to 1998 and was part of the Newcastle squad that finished runner-up in the Premier League in 1996. He also played for his country 49 times.

His agent Steve Wraith tweeted “I can confirm that Pavel has suffered cardiac arrest whilst running (in Ostrava) and is in critical condition in hospital.” Wraith says the goalkeeper remains unconscious and will be in an induced coma until Wednesday. JAKARTA - Indonesia is punishing more than 20 companies in an unprecedented move for starting deadly forest fires that killed 19 people, a government official said Tuesday.

After a secretive policy meeting that ended Monday, China’s economic planners said they would combat local government debt and push on with changes in the housing sector to try to shore up

growth. They also said they would “strengthen structural reforms” and called for more flexibility in monetary policy, state news agency Xinhua reported.
