Can âThe Force Awakensâ become the biggest movie ever?
LOS ANGELES â Riding galaxy-sized expectations, the new âStar Warsâ movie is already setting records for pre-opening ticket sales, with still a month to go. But does that mean the movieâs destined to be the biggest of all time?

The movie is on track to have the biggest December opening ever, topping âThe Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,â which took in $85 million in the U.S. and Canada on its opening weekend in December 2012. Ticket seller Fandango says advance ticket sales for âStar Wars: Episode VII â The Force Awakensâ has already topped every other movie, though it didnât provide figures. Imax says it has sold $18 million domestically, double the previous record. Imax receipts account for a third of pre-release sales
for this movie, putting the domestic total at more than $50 million. Whether it bests the biggest grosser of all time â âAvatar,â with $2.8 billion worldwide â depends on word of mouth and whether fans love it enough to watch it multiple times through the new year. âStar Warsâ will have the advantage of having weak competition for months. Marvelâs âDeadpoolâ doesnât come out until mid-February, while Warner Bros.â âBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justiceâ isnât out until late March. âI think itâs going to own January,â said Erik Davis, managing editor of Fandango, one of the nationâs
largest online ticket retailers. âI know one guy who has nine tickets to see it in the first week alone. Thatâs what weâre talking about.â A single ticket in big cities can cost $25 or more after paying for extras like Imax and 3-D. Social media activity is also off the charts, according to entertainment news website Moviepilot Inc. Exactly a month from release, âThe Force Awakensâ had 405 million trailer and teaser views on Facebook and YouTube. Thatâs 87 percent more than this summerâs âJurassic World,â which opened domestically with a record $208.8 million in ticket sales and owns the all-time No. 3 spot with $1.7 billion worldwide. No. 2 is âTitanic,â at $2.1 billion. Whatâs more, the 178,000 weekly searches for the movie on Google is more than three times as high as âJurassic World,â which had 51,800 weekly searches a month from release, according to Moviepilot. âPeople are searching and craving and demanding content,â Moviepilot CEO Tobi Bauckhage said. âThatâs a very strong signal.â To be sure, December releases tend to be smaller than in the summer, so coming out on top may take a marathon rather than a sprint. As for the all-time high, one thing âAvatarâ had going for it: It rode a wave of consumer interest in 3-D, which costs a few dollars more than regular tickets. That frenzy has largely cooled off. Traditionalists with a nostalgia for the originals might prefer 2-D screenings, especially with director J.J. Abramsâ use of more realistic-looking special effects like puppetry. The Walt Disney Co., which owns âStar Warsâ maker Lucasfilm, declined to comment. (ap)

TAIPEI â The film âThe Assassinâ by the veteran Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien has grabbed five awards, including the best director and best feature film, at the Golden Horse Awards. The Golden Horse awards are considered the equivalents of the Oscars for Chinese-language movies. Another âmeansâ needed to preserve Besakih THE PLAN to include Besakih in the National Tourism Strategic Area (KSPN) has been revoked by the governor of Bali and it has been submitted to the Ministry of Tourism. Other than Besakih, two other areas excluded from the Government Regulation No. 50/2011 on the KSPN are the West Bali National Park and Menjangan Island. âThe governor as a representation of Balinese people has appointed the representative figures of Bali having credibility and loyalty to Bali and commitment to preserving Bali. They have decided the three areas of KSPN in Bali should be revoked and the governor has submitted it to the Ministry of Tourism. So, it has become a final decision of Balinese community to reject the KSPN of Besakih, West Bali National Park and Menjangan Island,â he affirmed in the Bali Bicara program at Bale Banjar Bali Global Shankara organized by Bali TV in collaboration with the Mark Plus Center for Tourism and Hospitality. The program hosted by Hermawan Kartajaya discussed about the KSPN and Tri Hita Karana (THK). Nine Balinese dances proposed to become WCH
DENPASAR - Bali proposed nine dances to be set as the World Cultural Heritage (WCH) by UNESCO in its session in Namibia, Africa early December. The nine Balinese dances proposed include the Barong Ket, Joged Dance, Legong Kraton, Wayang Wong Ballet, Gambuh, Sidakarya Mask, Baris Upacara, Sanghyang Dance and Rejang Dance. âThe determination session by the UNESCO will be made on December 1-2, 2015. We sincerely hope the nine dances can be set as the World Cultural Heritage so
that it will not be easily claimed by other parties,â said the Head of Bali Culture Agency, Dewa Putu Beratha recently. Beratha added that Bali will send
three dancers to the session. The three dancers are going to present nine dances having been previously proposed. Their departure will be accompanied by a lecturer from the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar, Prof. I Wayan Dibia. âIf the nine dances have got determination from the UNESCO, it will become the obligation of all parties in Bali to take care of them,â he continued.
Beratha added that on October 20, the nine dances already got the certificate of Immaterial Cultural Heritage of Indonesia handed over by the Minister of Basic and Secondary Education and Culture Anies Baswedan. At that time, Bali received certificate of the Immaterial Cultural Heritage of Indonesia for the 12 cultural products. Nine of them are dances and three others are cultural products in the form
