Kardashian has been by Odom’s side since he was found in extremely critical condition Oct. 13 at the Love Ranch brothel in the rural community of Crystal, Nevada, and hospitalized in Las Vegas. He regained consciousness Friday and was transported to Los Angeles on Monday. Kardashian posted a statement to her website Tuesday saying Odom made “incredible strides” at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas and thanking the doctors and nurses “for their kindness and diligent work.” The hospital and Odom’s relatives have not revealed his prognosis, but the family has hinted at a long road ahead, saying they realize his “continued improvement” won’t be easy. The brothel said workers saw him drink alcohol and take supplements sold as “herbal Viagra.” The Food and Drug Administration issued a warning in 2013 against one brand he took, Reload, after it was found to contain sildenafil, the active ingredient in prescription Viagra. He also told at least one of the women that he had done cocaine, but the brothel says it did not see him take any drugs. Love Ranch owner Dennis Hof has said that Odom arrived Oct. 10 for a four-day stay and spent $75,000 on two women who accompanied him in a VIP suite. Test results from blood samples obtained through a warrant still are pending, and authorities have not ruled out the possibility of taking action against the brothel or Odom. (ap)

Chris Rock to host Oscars
LOS ANGELES - US comedian and actor Chris Rock will return to host the Oscars in February for a second time, organizers announced on Wednesday. “Chris Rock is truly the MVP of the entertainment industry,” David Hill and Reginald Hudlin, the producers of the show that will be held February 28 in Los Angeles, said in a statement. “Comedian, actor, writer, producer, director, documentarian – he’s done it all. He’s going to be a phenomenal Oscar host!” The 50-year-old Rock -- a veteran of “Saturday Night Live” and star of several films -- confirmed his appearance with a tweet that said “Look who’s back.” Rock last hosted the Oscars in 2005 when “Million Dollar Baby” won best picture. He got mixed reviews, with some panning his performance and others praising his biting humor. Many at the time took offense to his attacks against several actors including Jude Law and Colin Farrell. Rock most recently wrote and starred in rom-com “Top Five” and directed Amy Schumer’s stand-up comedy special on HBO. Last year’s Oscars was hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, who struggled through the show. It was the lowest-rated Oscars telecast in six years. (afp)

It is not that their testicles will be removed,” the minister stated after attending the opening of the ASEAN Law Ministers’ Meeting (ALAWMM) on Thursday. Laoly said his ministry is study-
ing the matter with the relevant parties, such as the Attorney General’s Office, the Ministry of Women and Children Empowerment, the Ministry of Social Affairs, the Ministry of Health, non-governmental organizations, and other related agencies. He remarked that the discourse
on castration to reduce the libido of pedophiles could be implemented. Referring to a proposal on the need to issue a government regulation in lieu of law (Perppu), the minister stated that it is also under study to decide whether sexual crimes against children come under the emergency category. He affirmed that sexual crimes against children are grave in nature, and the victims suffer long-term trauma. “It is (sexual violence against
children) quite dangerous as its impacts are intangible. If there is no stern law, pedophiles will come here,” he added. In mid September their were only 7 villages that lacked water, but now more than ten villages having water problems as a result of the worsening drought in the area. The Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) and other related agencies are overwhelmed trying to provide water to all those in need. Head of BPBD Bangli, I Wayan Karmawan, accompanied by Division Head of Emergency and Logistics, I Ketut Agus Sutapa, explained that since the beginning of the dry season in July until about mid-September, villages in Kintamani subdistrict such as; Abang Batudinding, Suter, Trunyan, Bantang and Songan A have been facing drought conditions. Villages in Susut subdistrict including Yangapi village, and Landih village in Bangli are also short of water. As of mid-October, Jehem and Peninjoan villages in Tembuku have been added to the list of villages struck with severe water shortages along with Buahan, Abang Songan and Serai in Kintamani. “Tembuku is the worst hit by the lack of water along with Bangli. He added that the water shortage is due to the severe drought but another contributing factor is the leak in the PDAM (municipal waterworks) pipeline currently under repair and the lack of natural water sources in these areas. “The lack of water is not entirely caused by drought, the faulty PDMA infrastructure is another factor,” explained Karmawan. To address this issue, Karmawan said that BPBD Bangli can only take short term measures such as supplying water through cooperation with BPBD Bali, the Social Agency, PDAM and the Urban Planning Agency. For a more long term solution BPBD Bangli is looking for water sources near the villages in need. Once these are discovered they will attempt to syphon the water using a pump. “While distributing water supplies, we also look for available springs.
In the case where their are such springs, village authorities use need to submit an official proposal for us to pump out the water to fill the reservoirs. We will surely facilitate this process,” he said. Karmawan also mentioned that this long-term solution cannot be undertaken solely by the government, but villagers also need to provide relevant information. “If any village can find a solution, please let us know. Villagers need to be pro-active,” he said. Karmawan also added that based on recent data, only three villages have submitted proposals for help in handling the water crisis; Buahan village, Serai village and Dalak Tiying at Landih village. “We are waiting for the other villages to apply or assistance,” he said, adding that a total of 73 tanks of water have been distributed to a number of areas. The water crisis not only threatens the fate of the individuals but also has a negative impact on
agriculture as seen in Pengiangan village, Susut. Their irrigation channel is getting shallower all the time so farmers there are forced to purchase water just to water their tomato plants. One local farmers, I Wayan Asa, said that in previous dry seasons, the water flow in the irrigation channels was fairly good. However, this year the water channels have slowed to a mear trickle. As a result, agricultural lands in the area are drying up so farmers are forced to buy water for IDR 15,000 per 1,100 liters, a day of their plants. “I am forced to buy water to water my tomatoes because there isn’t enough water in the irrigation channels,” he said. Although it may appear that the cost of the water for his plants is not very much, when added up over two months, it is still a substantial sum. “It would be alright if it was just one day, but this has been going on for two months, so I have spent a lot of money just on water,” he said while shaking head.

Water crisis threatens Kuta and South Kuta GIVEN how much we depend on water as one of our basic needs, people tend to be anxious about the possibility of being cut off. Residents of Kuta and South Kuta feeling this anxiety partly because the estuary dam in Suwung has is starting to silt. The Suwung dam is the main supply of water for customers of the Municipal Waterworks or PDAM Tirta Mangutama.
Managing Director of PDAM Tirta Mangutama, I Made Subarga Yasa, accompanied by his ranks, said that the estuary dam that supplies their water is vital and that of the 500 liters per second of water that it can provide, PDAM Badung uses 350 liters per second. “Water from the dam is distributed to customers in Kuta and South Kuta,” he said. According to Yasa, the surface of the water has been depleting due to silting. Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

A video intro featuring Kendall Jenner riding a futuristic subway with dancers voguing kicked off the runway show. Models showing the collection featured Jenner again along with Gigi and Bella Hadid, Karlie Kloss and Jourdan Dunn. “I think the models I chose are my friends,” said Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing. “All the girls that I love that can grab my hand and just say, ‘Don’t worry, It’s gonna be fun.’ It’s a night of love and of friendship and of fun.” The collection included beaded jackets, draped trousers and genie pants. Greatness of Ubud due to art and culture
GIANYAR - The number of tourist that visit Ubud continues to increase every year. Nowadays, this area that has consistently maintained Balinese cultural practices, is filled with groups of visitors. The progress of Ubud is slightly staggering having become a kampong of tourists when compared to the early days of tourism in Ubud. Chairman of the Institute for Community Empowerment (LPM) of Ubud, Dr. Tjokorda Gede Raka Sukawati, explained that tourism in Ubud began to develop in the 1930s when the daily activities of many Ubudiana was painting. At that time everyone was painting in a traditional manner. Then the leader of Ubud Palace at the time -Tjok Gede Agung Sukawati, invited foreign artists to provide education about painting techniques to the undagi or artists in Ubud. “The late Tjok Gede Agung Sukawati invited some painters such as Walter Spies, Rudolf Bonet and Antonio Blanco to stay at Campuan and teach various art techniques there,” he explained. Since then, there have been collaboration between local artists using their typical cultural style and westerners using their more dynamic style. “Even though there was collaboration it was essentially based on the traditions of Bali, from sketches, ngapat to ngabur techniques. And Bali remained the inspiration for and spirit of each work, so this collaboration is known as traditional modern art,” said Dr. Tjokorda Gede Raka Sukawati. After producing various works, a number of these “new Balinese paintings” were included in inter-
national exhibitions overseas. As a result, many foreign artists became interested in these works, and decided to come to Ubud themselves. “After a lot of works were produced, around 1955, Museum Puri Lukisan was built to store some of these paintings so that they would not all be sold overseas,” he explained. Over the years more and more people visited Ubud with hundreds of thousands having visited by the 1970’s. At that time, various tourist accommodations like guest houses started to be built. “Previously travelers tended to stay in Denpasar at hotels owned by the Dutch. In the 1980s, more and more travelers were coming so more guesthouses were built,” Dr. Tjokorda Gede Raka Sukawati explained. Despite the increasing number of tourist accommodations being built in Ubud, locals were encouraged to maintain their cultural practices. According to Tjokorda Raka, preserving culture provides a positive vibration and allows Bali to survive. “We are doing well because we are all practicing tradition and culture. One example is that Ubud was chosen as the world’s best destination by Travel Choice 2014. This is because of nothing other culture,” he said. (kmb35)

New Atlanta fashion museum opens with Oscar de la Renta show ATLANTA (AP) — A new museum focusing on international fashion has opened in Atlanta. The first exhibition at SCAD FASH features more than 80 Oscar de la Renta designs and opened to the public this month on the Atlanta campus of the Savannah College of Art and Design. The pieces come from the school’s permanent collection and donations from collectors and celebrities who worked with de la Renta before his death in 2014. De la Renta was a frequent donor to SCAD’s collections and the natural choice for the opening, said Laurie Ann Farrell, executive director of museums and exhibitions and curator of the showing. She hopes visitors whether casual observer or
devoted student will learn something about design. “Everybody selects their clothes as one way of signifying their identity,” Farrell said. “Even if somebody doesn’t consider themselves a fashion aficionado, I think they can come in and be inspired by what different designers have done through the years.” The pieces on display in Atlanta until Dec. 31 cover decades of work, from a 1965 black cashmere dress with a white satin collar and waist bow to a silk color-block gown designed by creative director Peter Copping for fall 2015 and worn at the Emmy awards by actress Maggie Gyllenhaal. Student-docents hold iPads with
information about each garment as they guide visitors through the 10,000 square-foot space, winding through curved galleries and small rooms featuring a source of inspiration for the designer. A white, mirrored room contains romantic wedding gowns and a silk-patterned dress inspired by Marie Antoinette while a nearby platform holds a gathering of black and red flamenco-inspired garments with dramatic ruffles and other flourishes. De la Renta’s technique and influence is the exhibition’s focus, but the people once inside the garments add to each item’s appeal for visitors. De la Renta received a lifetime achievement award from SCAD in 2001, beginning a relationship with the school. De la Renta donated pieces to SCAD’s permanent collection in the years following the recognition. Immediately outside the museum doors, SCAD Atlanta’s fashion students have moved into new classrooms and can closely examine or even take apart items from the school’s permanent collection inside a fashion resource library. SINGARAJA - Climate change is one of the factors causing the decrease of fish catches out at sea. High seas make fishermen vulnerable even though Indonesia remains the best fish -producing country in the world. Volatile climactic conditions have triggered a decline in the profits of the fishery sector. Fishermen at Anturan village, Buleleng, are feeling the pinch with their catches of fish having been reduced by as much as 50 percent. Climate change and nature’s susceptibility to change have an impact on ocean fish reproduc-
tion. Allegedly changes in weather patterns are caused by the rising temperatures of the ocean’s surface and changes in the direction of sea breezes. Fishermen at Anturan village say that their catches of fish have drastically declined lately. “Last year, we could catch 10-15 quintals of fish each time we went out to sea. By the middle of this year, this amount decreased to about 3-4 quintals. This is a sharp decrease, but we still go out to sea,” said local fisherman, Gede Subawa. Subawa does not know for sure why there are less fish in the North
Bali seas now but suspects that it may be because many fishermen are now using FAD’s that lure fish into large fishing nets that are placed in shallow waters, allowing these fishermen to catch enormous amounts of fish at a time. He feels that this method is not good because there should be more fish in the open sea. Subawa also wonders it the declining number of fish is due to the presence of large fishing boats from Java that fish in North Bal waters. For just one trip out to sea, he needs to buy IDR 780,000 worth of fuel (120 litters at IDR 6,500 a
litter) . “Indeed, there have been far fewer fish over the last few months, but we don’t know why. This lack of fish means that our income also greatly declines,” said Subawa. Due to the declining number of fish, Subawa’s income has dropped from about IDR 8 million a month to just IDR 3 million a month. “Many of us suspect that the large Javanese fishing boats are to blame, but there is no definite evidence that this is the cause. Thousands of Batudawa residents do melasti
AMLAPURA - About five thousand customary villagers of Batudawa, Kubu, participated in the melasti procession to local beach on Wednesday (Oct. 21) in relation to the karya padudusan and manawa ratna at local Pura Puseh. During the ritual takes place, the village area is made sterile from campaign props. It was announced by ritual committee chairman, Ketut Winatayama, accompanied by chief of customary village, Nengah Putu, Wednesday. It is meant to make all the customary villagers focus on activities related to devotional works. “During the ritual takes place, we have sterilized the village from billboards, banners or other campaign props. It is meant to prevent all the customary villagers from disintegration into some political affiliations. After the ritual, it does not matter, but the unity must be well maintained. Never break out at the village just because of different political affiliation,” said Winatayama. Other than the karya padudusan and manawa ratna ritual on next full moon or Tuesday (Oct. 27), it has been preceded with the tabuh gentuh animal sacrifice as well as other processions such as ngenteg linggih and mendem pedagingan. Nengah Putu said that customary villagers have done devotional works to Pura Puseh since four months ago. Male villagers made additional temporary buildings like tetaring and sanggah catur shrine, while female villagers make different types of cakes for bebantenan oblation. They also made suci offerings no less than 1,000 pieces. Melasti procession on Wednesday is estimated to involve more than 5,000 pilgrims. They all looked to throng and stop their regular activities at home, stalls and other businesses. All members of the family including grandparents and toddlers were participating in the melasti procession. “Sanctified effigies of the Pura Desa and clan temples reaching 28 are carried in palanquin,” said Putu. The melasti procession was officiated over by Ida Pandita Mpu Budha Maharsi Alit Parama Daksha from Griya Agung Salahin, Susut, Bangli, and Ida Pandita Mpu Nabe Tri Daksha Natha from Griya Ababi, Karangasem. Pakelem procession out to sea was officiated over by Ida Pandita Maharsi Alit. Banten pakelem oblation including bagia pulakerti and pakelem animals like buffalo and other animals are placed on raft with ballasts made from a number of sandbags. In the sea of fishermen village, the oblations are drowned. The villagers escorting the mapekelem ritual are transported by nine fisherman boats. Thousands of the villagers on mainland continued cheering and clapping. Chief of customary village Nengah Putu delivered that the pakelem procession is considered to have taken place properly and got graces. It is marked off by the sealed bottle used to invoke holy water or tirtha amrita at the bottom of the ocean has been fully contained whereas the bottle has been closed and glued. Having been informed if their melasti procession has obtained graces and fluency, all villagers welcomed it by applause. (013)

Subak to serve as an example of cultural heritage site management for UNESCO
DENPASAR - Subak as a traditional Balinese method of agricultural management is indeed very popular. UNESCO is proposing a pilot project for the management of world cultural heritage sites in Southest Asia using the subak system as a model. This pilot project aims at assisting cultural heritage sites to develop sustainable tourism strategies in order to strengthen the participation of stakeholders in the planning, development and governance of sustainable tourism, based on the context and the needs of local communities. The plan for this pilot project was revealed during a workshop on Sustainable Tourism at World Cultural Heritage Sites that was held by the UNESCO in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Culture, in Sanur on Wednesday (Oct. 21). Director of UNESCO Jakarta, Shabaz Khan, said that the workshop serves as a forum for sharing knowledge and experience, in an effort to ensure the continuity of tourism. If tourism and cultural heritage sites are managed in a responsible manner, social and economic development will be well supported, he said. Apart from
the subak, of Bali, UNESCO also chose the sites of Melaka and George Town in Malaysia, and the rice terraces in the Cordilleras, Philippines as models for site management pilot projects in Asia. “Through study and comparative analysis, the knowledge gained can be developed into the best practices for sustainable tourism management and empowerment of local communities,” said Khan. Director General of Culture for the Ministry of Education and Culture, Kacung Marijan, explained that the management of subak in Bali should be integrated, comprehensive and cross-sectoral by in-
volving all relevant ministries. Similarly, the management of subak should involve the entire community as well as provincial and county governments. “Community is the core of the subak system. On that account, the government must continue to support community-based management in preserving the subak system,” he explained. Deputy Governor of Bali, Ketut Sudikerta, said that the biggest challenge faced in maintaining the subak as a world cultural heritage is ensuring the continuity of the upstream and downstream areas including the social, economic, cultural and ecological aspects. In the upstream areas, action is required to preserve the sources of water, while in the downstream area policies are needed in order to prevent the conversion of agricultural lands into other functions. “Actions like preserving water sources and preventing land conversion through policy are not easy things to do,” he said. An obsessive bunch penetrates North Korea’s totalitarian fog
LONGMONT, Colo. — In an anonymous office building in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains, in a part of Colorado where cattle ranches fade into strip malls, a gravel-voiced man with a Brooklyn accent is moving through the streets of Pyongyang. Joe Bermudez is staring into a computer screen at a detailed satellite image, maneuvering his cursor past guarded checkpoints and into restricted neighborhoods where the North Korean elite live behind high concrete walls. Looking down on the city from more than 250 miles up, he lingers over what he believes is the private airport of Kim Jong Un, North Korea’s young leader, pointing out a pair of VIP helicopters and a Soviet-era biplane. He moves north, jumping across the countryside and picking out hidden tunnels, walled compounds and a small flotilla of military hovercraft designed to storm South Korea’s beaches. “Driving around,” he calls it when he follows roads in search of something new, humming absentmindedly as his eyes flick across the screen. Bermudez is a watcher, one of the largely anonymous tribe of researchers who study North Korea,
one of the world’s most isolated nations. There’s Michael Madden, a largely self-taught analyst with an encyclopedic knowledge of the government elite, and Curtis Melvin, whose research ranges from monetary policy to electricity grids and who shambles through the buttoned-down Washington think tank where he works in jeans and a frayed T-shirt. There’s Adam Cathcart at Britain’s University of Leeds and Cheong Seong-Chang at the Sejong Institute outside Seoul. There’s the longtime U.S. intelligence officer, a man quietly revered by many in these circles, who now writes Pyongyang crime novels under the pseudonym James Church. They are university professors, think tank analysts and writers for a string of North Korea-centric websites. They are collaborators and competitors. They are the Kremlinologists of Pyongyang. And
they insist North Korea is nowhere near as mysterious as you think it is. At least not always. “North Korea is a very secretive place. But it’s not as secretive as many people believe,” says Andrei Lankov, a Russian-born professor at Kookmin University in Seoul. “It’s much, much easier now to get information.” The chaos that swept North Korea during a mid-1990s famine dramatically changed how information flows in and out of the country, while policy changes have eased restrictions on visitors. Still, North Korea remains like nowhere else. It is a repressive and deeply isolated nation where the Internet is limited to a tiny elite and most outsiders are under nearconstant government surveillance. It has been ruled by one family for more than six decades, with the founder worshipped as a neardeity. It has no political opposition, no free press and no freedom of movement. It has an archipelago of political prison camps that rights groups estimate hold at least 80,000 people. (ap)
WARSAW, Poland — Poland’s upcoming general elections are making history by having three women campaigning to lead the nation, with one almost certain to win. But the appearance of major social change in this conservative nation may be slightly deceptive. Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz of the ruling Civic Platform is fighting to keep her job against a surging Beata Szydlo, who leads the conservative opposition party Law and Justice. The third woman candidate leads a cluster of leftwing groups, and is not considered a serious contender. The situation may seem startling in a nation known for traditional family values, but some see the dominance of women in the race as a reflection of Poland’s old male power structure. Unpopular party barons, experts say, are pushing the women forward to capitalize on voter weariness with a maledominated political culture that has been defined by infighting, drinking parties and scandals. “Women have become instruments in a political game,” said political analyst Kazimierz Kik. “The party chiefs know that many voters are against them and that they cannot win. They know that women have softer manners and will not threaten their position as leaders, and put them forward. Women are to give victory to their boss’ parties; they are not to win as individual politicians. It’s a political game.” Polls show Law and Justice with a strong lead over Civic Platform, meaning Szydlo, a 52-year-old ethnologist and relatively new figure on Poland’s political scene, is considered the top contender to be
the next prime minister. However, there is widespread speculation that Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the sometimes radical party leader and former prime minister, could ultimately decide to take that job himself. Though Kaczynski has kept in the background early on in the campaign, he has been vigorously and openly active in recent days, fueling speculation that he is only using Szydlo as a softer face of the party to win votes. Even though three women vying at once to lead the nation is unusual, women have had top leadership roles in Poland before. One of the first prime ministers in the early years of democracy was Hanna Suchocka, and women have held the roles of parliament speaker, central bank head and Warsaw mayor. On the whole women in Poland are better educated than men and often hold down jobs and support their families. “I think it is a good move to have women decide about the direction that our country will take,” said Mariusz Makus, 54, an interior decorator. “We are sick of men politicians. We have heard and seen enough of them. Women are softerspoken than men.” The female political surge began when former Prime Minister Donald Tusk left Poland last year to take the top European Union job in Brussels. He appointed Kopacz, a loyal ally, to be his successor as both party leader and prime minister. Kik said Kopacz’s loyalty was a guarantee to Tusk that she would not undermine him should he return to political life in Poland. Apple chief shrugs off China’s economic slowdown
SHANGHAI - US technology giant Apple will keep investing in China despite slowing growth in the world’s second-largest economy, chief executive Tim Cook said, as the company prepares to open its newest store in the mainland. “I know some people are worried about the economy. We’ll continue to invest,” Cook told the official Xinhua news agency, according to a report late Wednesday. “China is a superb place to be. Nothing has changed that,” Cook said while on a visit to the country. China’s economy logged its worst performance in the third quarter since the global financial crisis six years ago, with gross domestic product growing just 6.9 percent, the government said Monday. Cook has previously said that he expects China one day to surpass the United States to become Apple’s largest market. The launch of the company’s large-screen iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus last year boosted its sales in China, though it faces sharp competition from domestic competitors such as Xiaomi and Huawei. On his Chinese Sina Weibo -- or microblog -- account, Cook on Wednesday posted a photo of himself climbing the Great Wall and said he was “Happy to be back” in China. The US company will open its 21st mainland China store in the northeastern city of Dalian on Saturday, according to its website. SAN FRANSISCO - Twitter chief executive Jack Dorsey said Wednesday that the struggling messaging platform is in the midst of “rebooting” as it seeks to fulfil what he sees as its vital mission as a rapid source of information. Speaking at the Twitter developers conference in San Francisco, Dorsey said the relationship with Twitter and third-party developers had become strained, but promised to work to improve the situation. “Somewhere along the line, our relationship with developers became a little bit complicated,” he said. “I apologize for our confusion,” he said, adding that “we want to
reset our relationship, make sure we are learning, we are listening, we are rebooting.” Dorsey said the developers play a key role in helping Twitter fulfil its important role in the global community. “Twitter is unique because it is a brand, a bird, a logo that just about everyone on the planet has seen. It stands for something,” he said. “Twitter empowers the conversation that the world needs to see.” Dorsey also told the 1,500 developers that Twitter would make available analytical tools that can help them get better data on how people use applications. Hundreds of hectares of paddy fields dry out after illegal quarry avalanches
GIANYAR - Drought is affecting hundreds of hectares of paddy fields in seven villages in Blahbatuh. Unfinished repairs to the irrigation channel has made things even worse. Farmers from subak Bonibiu, Saba have started to abandon their paddy fields, resigned to the dire conditions.
As seen at Subak Bonbiu on Wednesday (Oct. 21), many hectares of agricultural land are overgrown with weeds and the soil has begun to crack as the fields have not been irrigated for some time. “After the planting season, 1 and a half months ago, we began to have trouble with the flow of irrigation water,” said local farmer, I Wayan Karya. Karya said that the irrigation channel was damaged by a landslip that was caused by illegal mining in the area. “Now, repair work is being carried out upstream, but it has been over a month and the repairs are not finished. Water is however still being drained into fields by turn and only once was it totally cut off, that was two months ago,” he said. Wayan Karya added that there was appeal to farmers not to plant rice because of the repairs being down to the irrigation channel. But because planting season had come, farmers continued their habit of rice, assuming that it would start raining in September. “But in reality, until now (late October—Ed) it has yet to rain and while repairs are ongoing the water supply has been shut off. That’s why our paddy plants have shrivelled up,” he complained. Member of Commission IV of the Gianyar House of Representatives, Ni Made Ratnadi, accompanied by Blahbatih’s subdistrict head, I Made Kriya Gunarta, recently inspected the conditions of farmlands at Bonbiu. Ratnadi expressed her deep concerned about the drought at Subak Bonbiu which not only affects crop yields but also contributes to social problems. According to data collected, on average farmers suffer losses of about IDR 2 million to IDR 2.5 million. “If we multiply this by the number of farmers and then include fish farmers who are also suffering losses, we can begin to imagine the scope of the problem,” said Ratnadi.
An avalanches blocked some part of the river in Gianyar and it cause draught in a few areas. She added that similar conditions are being felt in Keramas village, Blahbatuh, where 20 day old paddy seedlings are dying from the drought. “Hundreds of hectares of paddy plants in seven villages located throughout Blahbatuh subdistrict are facing similar conditions, they are: Blahbatuh, Belega, Bona, Keramas, Medahan, Pering and Saba,” Ratnadi informed. The drought is caused by an avalanche of an illegal quarry that buried the irrigation
tunnel under 12 meters of rubble. The main flow of water is now flowing directly into the river instead of irrigating fields in the area. “A similar incident occurred in 2011 and was equally disruptive to farmers but because the illegal quarry was not reprimanded, another avalanche occurred recently. The government of Gianyar should be more aggressive in curbing illegal mining,” she hoped. Head of the Gianyar Public Works, I.B. Sudewa, said that the authority to repair the

Subak Bonbiu infrastructure lies with the Bali-Penida River Agency. As far as Sudewa has been informed, repairs to the irrigation channel, that was crushed by the collapsed illegal quarry, are ongoing. “After checking the upstream area of Subak Bonbiu, we found that repairs appear to be in progress. Until September this year, the highest number of tourist visit occurred last August reaching 26,599 visitors. Coordinator of the Pura Gunung Kawi tourist attraction, Tampaksiring, I Made Yuliarta, said on Wednesday (Oct. 21)
that the number of tourist visits in August reached 25,097 adults and 1,502 children. According to him, the high tourist visit during the month happened due to coinciding with holiday season. In September, the tourist visit decreased quite dramatically reaching 18,194 people. However, the figure is relatively high when compared to the number of tourist visits at the beginning
of the year. In the first three months of this year, the monthly average of tourist visits reached approximately 7,800 people. “After that, in April the number of visits reached 10,000 people,” he said. He explained that tourist visits to Gunung Kawi attraction, especially those from Europe are dominated by French, Italian and German travelers. Yuliarta said
that those guests are very interested in natural beauty and historical value of Gunung Kawi. “For European travelers, the promotion usually happens through word of mouth. They are eager to explore directly what the cliff temple of Gunung Kawi actually looks like. In contrast, Asian travelers very rarely visit this attraction,” he said. He said further that both the
management and local community continue to improve the quality of tourist attraction. For example, it has been done through establishment of adequate public facilities, including skill development and provision of better services for travelers. “Hopefully the tourist visit to Gunung Kawi will be on the rise. Israeli soldiers kill Jewish man mistaken for ‘terrorist’
JERUSALEM — An Israeli soldier shot and killed a Jewish man he suspected was a Palestinian “terrorist” in Jerusalem, police said Thursday, in a reflection of the jittery mood that has gripped Israelis amid a spate of near-daily Palestinian stabbing attacks. Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said soldiers deployed in Jerusalem to reinforce police demanded late Wednesday that the man show them his ID. The man refused, scuffled with the soldiers and then attempted to seize one of their weapons. One soldier shot the man, who later died of his wounds, Rosenfeld said. “The soldiers had high suspicions that he was a terrorist,” he said. Israeli media said the man had asked for the soldiers’ IDs first, but Rosenfeld was not able to confirm that detail. He said the incident is under investigation. The Palestinian attacks have Israelis on edge. When an Arab citizen of Israel opened fire at a bus station in southern Israel on Sunday, killing an Israeli soldier and wounding several people, a private security guard shot an Eritrean migrant he thought was an attacker. As the Eritrean lay on the ground, a mob of people cursed him, kicked him and hit him with objects. He later died
of his wounds. Police said the autopsy showed the man died from gunshot wounds and that four suspects would appear in court Thursday over the beating. “This is not the Wild West,” Israeli opposition legislator Tzipi Livni told Israeli Army Radio. “The suspicion there is now, the fear and the hate lead to brutal and very difficult results.” Israelis have scrambled to purchase pepper spray for selfdefense and some government officials have called for citizens to carry firearms for protection. Israel has beefed up security, sending hundreds of soldiers to back up thousands of police officers. Police have erected concrete barriers and checkpoints at the entrance to Arab areas of east Jerusalem, where many of the attackers are from. The violence has continued unabated. Police say two Palestinians stabbed an Israeli at a bus stop on Thursday after they tried to board a bus ferrying children to school. Police shot the two
men, one of whom later died while the other was seriously wounded. Police said the Israeli man was moderately wounded. Ten Israelis have been killed over the last month, mainly in stabbing attacks. On the Palestinian side, 48 people have been killed, 27 of them identified by Israel as attackers, the others killed in clashes with Israeli forces. The violence erupted a month ago, fueled by rumors that Israel was plotting to take over a sensitive Jerusalem holy site revered by both Jews and Muslims. The violence was initially confined to traditionally Arab east Jerusalem but soon spread deep into Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. The Palestinians say the violence is rooted in frustration at decades of living under Israeli occupation, while Israel accuses Palestinian leaders of inciting the unrest. Diplomatic efforts have kicked off in a bid to quell the violence. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met with Israeli and Palestinian leaders during a visit to the region this week and then offered the Security Council a grim assessment of prospects for defusing the violence. NEW DELHI — One of the world’s most polluted capitals, New Delhi, closed a major stretch of a road to private cars for a few hours Thursday, hoping to give its citizens a brief breath of fresh air by observing a car-free day. Only public transport was allowed on the road from Old Delhi to the doorstep of Parliament. The city’s top elected official, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his cabinet colleagues, led hundreds of cyclists as they pedaled the route to encourage people to use public transport. “All of us have to do our bit to decongest the roads and to reduce pollution. People should leave their cars and start using public transport and bicycles,” Kejriwal said as he prepared to lead the cyclists. Although the event covered only a six-kilometer (4-mile) stretch, many people hailed the government’s effort as a first step to clean the city’s heavily polluted air. “Even though it’s only for a few hours, it’s a very good start. One million house program only reaches 45 percent of target
JAKARTA - Secretary General of the Ministry of Public Works and Housing Taufik Widjoyono said progress made in the implementation of the program to build one million units of houses has reached only 45 percent so far this year. Implementation of the program for low cost houses has been smooth as scheduled,as the project is handled by the ministry itself, Taufik said. There was, however, problem in the implementation for the program to build houses for middle to high income people, he said. Houses for middle to high income people are to be built by the private sector. “Sales of houses for middle and high income people fell short of target amid the present condition of uncertainty. Consumers choose to wait and see and put off plan to buy houses,” he said. The East Java branch of the Real Estate Indonesia (REI) said the program to build one million units of house launched by President Joko Widodo is not up to expectation in
implementation. “There are a number of hurdles faced by developers in carrying out the program. One is land clearing,” deputy chairman of thye East Java REI Dibya K Hidayat. Dibya said the prices of land soared in the city of Semarang slowing the process of land clearing. “With the prices skyrocketing it is impossible for developers to build low cost houses in Semarang,” he said. Dibya adding, “it is possible if the project is outside the city.” He called on the government to help provide infrastructure for housing projects in the regions. “Ideally, the government builds infrastructure in new settlement centers as satellite cities,” he said. He said the government and developers have not reached a consensus on the provision of infrastructure in new housing projects. There are still a lot to be faced such as policies not yet synchronized between the center and the regions, he said, citing policy on processing tariff at the land office. (ant)

BANDA ACEH - Gay people caught having sex in Indonesia’s staunchly Islamic Aceh province will from Friday be punished by 100 strokes of the cane, an official said, despite criticism of the “inhumane” law. Under an Islamic bylaw, anal sex between men and “the rubbing of body parts between women for stimulation” is outlawed. The rule applies to all Muslims including foreigners, provincial sharia chief Syahrizal Abbas told AFP. The regulation was passed in 2014 amid outrage from rights groups, but officials took a year to educate the public about the new law before it came into effect. “The law is to safeguard human dignity. It is to protect Aceh’s Muslims from committing immoral acts,” Abbas said Thursday, adding it would come into effect the following day. Gay sex is not illegal in the rest of the country, which mainly follows a criminal code inherited from former colonial ruler the Netherlands. Aceh province, the only part of the world’s most populous Muslimmajority nation that is allowed to implement Islamic sharia law, already carries out public canings for gam-
bling, drinking alcohol and fraternising with the opposite sex outside of marriage. The new law in the western province also makes adultery punishable by 100 lashes and punishes those who accuse others of adultery without proof with 80 lashes. Canings -- which are carried out with thin rattan sticks in public and aimed at humiliating rather than causing physical pain -- can be substituted with payments of pure gold or jail time. Ismail Hasani, from prominent Indonesian rights group the Setara Institute for Democracy and Peace, criticised the law as “cruel, inhumane and against the constitution” and called for it to abolished. “The government should not meddle in private affairs and instead guarantee individual rights such as freedom,” he added. Aceh gained a degree of autonomy in 2001 in a deal with Jakarta aimed at quelling a decades-long separatist movement, and has been slowly implementing sharia law ever since. JAKARTA - Indonesia’s biggest e-commerce companies will meet high-profile Silicon Valley venture capitalists next week, a cabinet minister said, when they accompany President Joko Widodo on a U.S. trip to woo investment in the country’s fledgling tech sector. Widodo, who just marked a year in office, is keen to attract much-needed foreign investment to kickstart Southeast Asia’s largest economy, which has been growing at its slowest pace in six years. Start-ups like Gojek, a motorcycle taxi hailing app, and Tokopedia, an online store, will be among over five companies seeking investments of hundreds of millions of dollars from firms like Sequoia, Communications Minister Rudiantara said. “The president’s visit to Silicon Valley is a totally different ballgame to his visit to the east coast of the U.S.,” Rudiantara told Reuters in an interview. He said the visit to the world-
renowned tech hub was aimed specifically at attracting private sector investment. Apple is looking to invest in sustainable tin mining in Indonesia, the world’s biggest tin exporter, and in setting up research and development facilities there, according to cabinet ministers. MADRID — Saul Niguez, Jackson Martinez and substitute Oliver Torres scored a goal each as Atletico Madrid defeated Astana 4-0 to take the Group C lead in the Champions League on Wednesday. Niguez opened the scoring with a back-heel finish following a corner in the 23rd minute. Martinez then fired home in the 29th and Torres added another in the 63rd to put the game out of reach at the Vicente Calderon Stadium in Madrid. MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — The proposed Copa America Centenario in the United States could get back on track after soccer’s governing bodies for both South America and for North and Central America and the Caribbean announced they have ended their relationships with the marketing company Datisa. U.S. federal prosecutors said in May that CONMEBOL, South America’s governing body, reached an agreement in 2013 with Datisa, a newly created company, on a $240 million contract for rights to the Copa America in 2015, 2019 and 2023.
They said CONMEBOL agreed the following year to a $112.5 million deal for the 2016 Copa America Centenario. After an indictment was unsealed against 14 soccer executives and marketing officials, prosecutors said as part of its deals Datisa agreed to pay $110 million in bribes to South American soccer officials. CONMEBOL said Wednesday its commercial rights contract related to Copa America Centenario has been terminated. MADRID — Saul Niguez, Jackson Martinez and substitute Oliver Torres scored a goal each as Atletico Madrid defeated Astana 4-0 to take the Group C lead in the Champions League on Wednesday. Niguez opened the scoring with a back-heel finish following a corner in the 23rd minute. Martinez then fired home in the 29th and Torres added another in the 63rd to put the game out of reach at the Vicente Calderon Stadium in Madrid. The fourth goal came when Astana defender Denys Dedechko turned the ball into his own net while trying to clear a low cross in the 89th. The victory leaves Atletico with six points from three matches in Group C. Benfica, which lost 2-1 at Galatasaray, also has six points but trails the Spanish club on goal difference. PARIS — Cristiano Ronaldo could not find the target for Real Madrid and Zlatan Ibrahimovic put in an even less impressive performance for Paris Saint-Germain as the Group A leaders drew 0-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday. Perfect in their two previous group games, PSG and Real produced a largely sterile match at the Parc des Princes. The three-time defending French champions lacked imagination and pace to break through the 10-time European champions’ defense, with Madrid happy to sit back and play on the counterattack. In the absence of the injured Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and James Rodriguez, Madrid coach Rafa Benitez had to field a largely reshuffled team that still created the best chances. The most entertaining moment came in the dying moments of the match when a supporter evaded security and ran onto the pitch to give Ronaldo a quick hug. 2016 Copa could move forward after marketing deals end
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — The proposed Copa America Centenario in the United States could get back on track after soccer’s governing bodies for both South America and for North and Central America and the Caribbean announced they have ended their relationships with the marketing company Datisa. U.S. federal prosecutors said in May that CONMEBOL, South America’s governing body, reached an agreement in 2013 with Datisa, a newly created company, on a $240 million contract for rights to the Copa America in 2015, 2019 and 2023.
They said CONMEBOL agreed the following year to a $112.5 million deal for the 2016 Copa America Centenario. After an indictment was unsealed against 14 soccer executives and marketing officials, prosecutors said as part of its deals Datisa agreed to pay $110 million in bribes to South American soccer officials. CONMEBOL said Wednesday its commercial rights contract related to Copa America Centenario has been terminated. Israeli soldiers kill Jewish man mistaken for ‘terrorist’
JERUSALEM — An Israeli soldier shot and killed a Jewish man he suspected was a Palestinian “terrorist” in Jerusalem, police said Thursday, in a reflection of the jittery mood that has gripped Israelis amid a spate of near-daily Palestinian stabbing attacks. Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said soldiers deployed in Jerusalem to reinforce police demanded late Wednesday that the man show them his ID. The man refused, scuffled with the soldiers and then attempted to seize one of their weapons. One soldier shot the man, who later died of his wounds, Rosenfeld said. “The soldiers had high suspicions that he was a terrorist,” he said. Israeli media said the man had asked for the soldiers’ IDs first, but Rosenfeld was not able to confirm that detail. He said the incident is under investigation. The Palestinian attacks have Israelis on edge. When an Arab citizen of Israel opened fire at a bus station in southern Israel on Sunday, killing an Israeli soldier and wounding several people, a private security guard shot an Eritrean migrant he thought was an attacker. As the Eritrean lay on the ground, a mob of people cursed him, kicked him and hit him with objects. He later died
of his wounds. Police said the autopsy showed the man died from gunshot wounds and that four suspects would appear in court Thursday over the beating. “This is not the Wild West,” Israeli opposition legislator Tzipi Livni told Israeli Army Radio. “The suspicion there is now, the fear and the hate lead to brutal and very difficult results.” Israelis have scrambled to purchase pepper spray for selfdefense and some government officials have called for citizens to carry firearms for protection. Israel has beefed up security, sending hundreds of soldiers to back up thousands of police officers. Police have erected concrete barriers and checkpoints at the entrance to Arab areas of east Jerusalem, where many of the attackers are from. The violence has continued unabated. Police say two Palestinians stabbed an Israeli at a bus stop on Thursday after they tried to board a bus ferrying children to school. Police shot the two
men, one of whom later died while the other was seriously wounded. Police said the Israeli man was moderately wounded. Ten Israelis have been killed over the last month, mainly in stabbing attacks. On the Palestinian side, 48 people have been killed, 27 of them identified by Israel as attackers, the others killed in clashes with Israeli forces. The violence erupted a month ago, fueled by rumors that Israel was plotting to take over a sensitive Jerusalem holy site revered by both Jews and Muslims. The violence was initially confined to traditionally Arab east Jerusalem but soon spread deep into Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. The Palestinians say the violence is rooted in frustration at decades of living under Israeli occupation, while Israel accuses Palestinian leaders of inciting the unrest. Diplomatic efforts have kicked off in a bid to quell the violence. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met with Israeli and Palestinian leaders during a visit to the region this week and then offered the Security Council a grim assessment of prospects for defusing the violence. NEW DELHI — One of the world’s most polluted capitals, New Delhi, closed a major stretch of a road to private cars for a few hours Thursday, hoping to give its citizens a brief breath of fresh air by observing a car-free day. Only public transport was allowed on the road from Old Delhi to the doorstep of Parliament. The city’s top elected official, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his cabinet colleagues, led hundreds of cyclists as they pedaled the route to encourage people to use public transport. “All of us have to do our bit to decongest the roads and to reduce pollution. People should leave their cars and start using public transport and bicycles,” Kejriwal said as he prepared to lead the cyclists. Although the event covered only a six-kilometer (4-mile) stretch, many people hailed the government’s effort as a first step to clean the city’s heavily polluted air. “Even though it’s only for a few hours, it’s a very good start. We have to get people thinking about the harm air pollution is doing to our health,” said
Sunil Kumar, an environmental activist who cycled to the event. Others said closing just one road for five hours would not make a dent in the heavy, particulate-ridden air in the capital. Delhi’s Transport Minister Gopal Rai said the idea was change peoples’ mindsets about using public transport. “We want to encourage people to use buses, the metro, rickshaws and other public transport so that pollution levels can be brought down in Delhi,” Rai told reporters. The sources of New Delhi’s air pollution are numerous — from the burning of agricultural fields of neighboring farmland states to the smoking factories and brick kilns on the city’s outskirts. Another major cause is blamed on crude cooking stoves fueled by burning biomass, kerosene or cow dung in villages around Delhi. And car ownership is climbing rapidly in the country of 1.2 billion, up from 20 million in 1991 to 140 million in 2011. It is expected to reach 400 million by 2030. (ap)

One million house program only reaches 45 percent of target
JAKARTA - Secretary General of the Ministry of Public Works and Housing Taufik Widjoyono said progress made in the implementation of the program to build one million units of houses has reached only 45 percent so far this year. Implementation of the program for low cost houses has been smooth as scheduled,as the project is handled by the ministry itself, Taufik said. There was, however, problem in the implementation for the program to build houses for middle to high income people, he said. Houses for middle to high income people are to be built by the private sector. “Sales of houses for middle and high income people fell short of target amid the present condition of uncertainty. Consumers choose to wait and see and put off plan to buy houses,” he said. The East Java branch of the Real Estate Indonesia (REI) said the program to build one million units of house launched by President Joko Widodo is not up to expectation in
implementation. “There are a number of hurdles faced by developers in carrying out the program. One is land clearing,” deputy chairman of thye East Java REI Dibya K Hidayat. Dibya said the prices of land soared in the city of Semarang slowing the process of land clearing. “With the prices skyrocketing it is impossible for developers to build low cost houses in Semarang,” he said. Dibya adding, “it is possible if the project is outside the city.” He called on the government to help provide infrastructure for housing projects in the regions. “Ideally, the government builds infrastructure in new settlement centers as satellite cities,” he said. He said the government and developers have not reached a consensus on the provision of infrastructure in new housing projects. There are still a lot to be faced such as policies not yet synchronized between the center and the regions, he said, citing policy on processing tariff at the land office. (ant)
Aceh to start caning gays caught having sex
BANDA ACEH - Gay people caught having sex in Indonesia’s staunchly Islamic Aceh province will from Friday be punished by 100 strokes of the cane, an official said, despite criticism of the “inhumane” law. Under an Islamic bylaw, anal sex between men and “the rubbing of body parts between women for stimulation” is outlawed. The rule applies to all Muslims including foreigners, provincial sharia chief Syahrizal Abbas told AFP. The regulation was passed in 2014 amid outrage from rights groups, but officials took a year to educate the public about the new law before it came into effect. “The law is to safeguard human dignity. It is to protect Aceh’s Muslims from committing immoral acts,” Abbas said Thursday, adding it would come into effect the following day. Gay sex is not illegal in the rest of the country, which mainly follows a criminal code inherited from former colonial ruler the Netherlands. Aceh province, the only part of the world’s most populous Muslimmajority nation that is allowed to implement Islamic sharia law, already carries out public canings for gam-
bling, drinking alcohol and fraternising with the opposite sex outside of marriage. The new law in the western province also makes adultery punishable by 100 lashes and punishes those who accuse others of adultery without proof with 80 lashes. Canings -- which are carried out with thin rattan sticks in public and aimed at humiliating rather than causing physical pain -- can be substituted with payments of pure gold or jail time. Ismail Hasani, from prominent Indonesian rights group the Setara Institute for Democracy and Peace, criticised the law as “cruel, inhumane and against the constitution” and called for it to abolished. “The government should not meddle in private affairs and instead guarantee individual rights such as freedom,” he added. Aceh gained a degree of autonomy in 2001 in a deal with Jakarta aimed at quelling a decades-long separatist movement, and has been slowly implementing sharia law ever since. Indonesia to woo American investment in e-commerce sector
JAKARTA - Indonesia’s biggest e-commerce companies will meet high-profile Silicon Valley venture capitalists next week, a cabinet minister said, when they accompany President Joko Widodo on a U.S. trip to woo investment in the country’s fledgling tech sector. Widodo, who just marked a year in office, is keen to attract much-needed foreign investment to kickstart Southeast Asia’s largest economy, which has been growing at its slowest pace in six years. Start-ups like Gojek, a motorcycle taxi hailing app, and Tokopedia, an online store, will be among over five companies seeking investments of hundreds of millions of dollars from firms like Sequoia, Communications Minister Rudiantara said. “The president’s visit to Silicon Valley is a totally different ballgame to his visit to the east coast of the U.S.,” Rudiantara told Reuters in an interview. He said the visit to the world-
renowned tech hub was aimed specifically at attracting private sector investment. Widodo’s visit to California will come after meetings with President Barack Obama, U.S. congressional leaders and executives from energy and mining companies in Washington. Indonesia recently announced it is considering revising its negative investment list to allow foreign investment in the e-commerce sector. Apple is looking to invest in sustainable tin mining in Indonesia, the world’s biggest tin exporter, and in setting up research and development facilities there, according to cabinet ministers. U.S. Ambassador Robert Blake told reporters earlier on Wednesday that a wide range of agreements was set to be signed by Widodo and Obama next week to “expand cooperation in maritime, energy and defense sectors”. Apple chief shrugs off China’s economic slowdown
SHANGHAI - US technology giant Apple will keep investing in China despite slowing growth in the world’s second-largest economy, chief executive Tim Cook said, as the company prepares to open its newest store in the mainland. “I know some people are worried about the economy. We’ll continue to invest,” Cook told the official Xinhua news agency, according to a report late Wednesday. “China is a superb place to be. Nothing has changed that,” Cook said while on a visit to the country. China’s economy logged its worst performance in the third quarter since the global financial crisis six years ago, with gross domestic product growing just 6.9 percent, the government said Monday. Cook has previously said that he expects China one day to surpass the United States to become Apple’s largest market. The launch of the company’s large-screen iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus last year boosted its sales in China, though it faces sharp competition from domestic competitors such as Xiaomi and Huawei. On his Chinese Sina Weibo -- or microblog -- account, Cook on Wednesday posted a photo of himself climbing the Great Wall and said he was “Happy to be back” in China. The US company will open its 21st mainland China store in the northeastern city of Dalian on Saturday, according to its website. SAN FRANSISCO - Twitter chief executive Jack Dorsey said Wednesday that the struggling messaging platform is in the midst of “rebooting” as it seeks to fulfil what he sees as its vital mission as a rapid source of information. Speaking at the Twitter developers conference in San Francisco, Dorsey said the relationship with Twitter and third-party developers had become strained, but promised to work to improve the situation. “Somewhere along the line, our relationship with developers became a little bit complicated,” he said. “I apologize for our confusion,” he said, adding that “we want to
reset our relationship, make sure we are learning, we are listening, we are rebooting.” Dorsey said the developers play a key role in helping Twitter fulfil its important role in the global community. “Twitter is unique because it is a brand, a bird, a logo that just about everyone on the planet has seen. It stands for something,” he said. “Twitter empowers the conversation that the world needs to see.” Dorsey also told the 1,500 developers that Twitter would make available analytical tools that can help them get better data on how people use applications. Hundreds of hectares of paddy fields dry out after illegal quarry avalanches
GIANYAR - Drought is affecting hundreds of hectares of paddy fields in seven villages in Blahbatuh. Unfinished repairs to the irrigation channel has made things even worse. Farmers from subak Bonibiu, Saba have started to abandon their paddy fields, resigned to the dire conditions.
As seen at Subak Bonbiu on Wednesday (Oct. 21), many hectares of agricultural land are overgrown with weeds and the soil has begun to crack as the fields have not been irrigated for some time. “After the planting season, 1 and a half months ago, we began to have trouble with the flow of irrigation water,” said local farmer, I Wayan Karya. Karya said that the irrigation channel was damaged by a landslip that was caused by illegal mining in the area. “Now, repair work is being carried out upstream, but it has been over a month and the repairs are not finished. Water is however still being drained into fields by turn and only once was it totally cut off, that was two months ago,” he said. Wayan Karya added that there was appeal to farmers not to plant rice because of the repairs being down to the irrigation channel. But because planting season had come, farmers continued their habit of rice, assuming that it would start raining in September. “But in reality, until now (late October—Ed) it has yet to rain and while repairs are ongoing the water supply has been shut off. That’s why our paddy plants have shrivelled up,” he complained. Member of Commission IV of the Gianyar House of Representatives, Ni Made Ratnadi, accompanied by Blahbatih’s subdistrict head, I Made Kriya Gunarta, recently inspected the conditions of farmlands at Bonbiu. Ratnadi expressed her deep concerned about the drought at Subak Bonbiu which not only affects crop yields but also contributes to social problems. According to data collected, on average farmers suffer losses of about IDR 2 million to IDR 2.5 million. “If we multiply this by the number of farmers and then include fish farmers who are also suffering losses, we can begin to imagine the scope of the problem,” said Ratnadi.
An avalanches blocked some part of the river in Gianyar and it cause draught in a few areas. She added that similar conditions are being felt in Keramas village, Blahbatuh, where 20 day old paddy seedlings are dying from the drought. “Hundreds of hectares of paddy plants in seven villages located throughout Blahbatuh subdistrict are facing similar conditions, they are: Blahbatuh, Belega, Bona, Keramas, Medahan, Pering and Saba,” Ratnadi informed. The drought is caused by an avalanche of an illegal quarry that buried the irrigation
tunnel under 12 meters of rubble. The main flow of water is now flowing directly into the river instead of irrigating fields in the area. “A similar incident occurred in 2011 and was equally disruptive to farmers but because the illegal quarry was not reprimanded, another avalanche occurred recently. The government of Gianyar should be more aggressive in curbing illegal mining,” she hoped. Head of the Gianyar Public Works, I.B. Sudewa, said that the authority to repair the

GIANYAR - Gunung Kawi attraction in Tampaksiring becomes one of the prominent tourist attractions of Gianyar. Until September this year, the highest number of tourist visit occurred last August reaching 26,599 visitors. Coordinator of the Pura Gunung Kawi tourist attraction, Tampaksiring, I Made Yuliarta, said on Wednesday (Oct. 21)
that the number of tourist visits in August reached 25,097 adults and 1,502 children. According to him, the high tourist visit during the month happened due to coinciding with holiday season. In September, the tourist visit decreased quite dramatically reaching 18,194 people. However, the figure is relatively high when compared to the number of tourist visits at the beginning
of the year. In the first three months of this year, the monthly average of tourist visits reached approximately 7,800 people. “After that, in April the number of visits reached 10,000 people,” he said. He explained that tourist visits to Gunung Kawi attraction, especially those from Europe are dominated by French, Italian and German travelers. Yuliarta said
that those guests are very interested in natural beauty and historical value of Gunung Kawi. “For European travelers, the promotion usually happens through word of mouth. They are eager to explore directly what the cliff temple of Gunung Kawi actually looks like. In contrast, Asian travelers very rarely visit this attraction,” he said. He said further that both the
management and local community continue to improve the quality of tourist attraction. For example, it has been done through establishment of adequate public facilities, including skill development and provision of better services for travelers. “Hopefully the tourist visit to Gunung Kawi will be on the rise. Thousands of Batudawa residents do melasti
AMLAPURA - About five thousand customary villagers of Batudawa, Kubu, participated in the melasti procession to local beach on Wednesday (Oct. 21) in relation to the karya padudusan and manawa ratna at local Pura Puseh. During the ritual takes place, the village area is made sterile from campaign props. It was announced by ritual committee chairman, Ketut Winatayama, accompanied by chief of customary village, Nengah Putu, Wednesday. It is meant to make all the customary villagers focus on activities related to devotional works. “During the ritual takes place, we have sterilized the village from billboards, banners or other campaign props. It is meant to prevent all the customary villagers from disintegration into some political affiliations. After the ritual, it does not matter, but the unity must be well maintained. Never break out at the village just because of different political affiliation,” said Winatayama. Other than the karya padudusan and manawa ratna ritual on next full moon or Tuesday (Oct. 27), it has been preceded with the tabuh gentuh animal sacrifice as well as other processions such as ngenteg linggih and mendem pedagingan. Nengah Putu said that customary villagers have done devotional works to Pura Puseh since four months ago. Male villagers made additional temporary buildings like tetaring and sanggah catur shrine, while female villagers make different types of cakes for bebantenan oblation. They also made suci offerings no less than 1,000 pieces. Melasti procession on Wednesday is estimated to involve more than 5,000 pilgrims. They all looked to throng and stop their regular activities at home, stalls and other businesses. All members of the family including grandparents and toddlers were participating in the melasti procession. “Sanctified effigies of the Pura Desa and clan temples reaching 28 are carried in palanquin,” said Putu. The melasti procession was officiated over by Ida Pandita Mpu Budha Maharsi Alit Parama Daksha from Griya Agung Salahin, Susut, Bangli, and Ida Pandita Mpu Nabe Tri Daksha Natha from Griya Ababi, Karangasem. Pakelem procession out to sea was officiated over by Ida Pandita Maharsi Alit. Banten pakelem oblation including bagia pulakerti and pakelem animals like buffalo and other animals are placed on raft with ballasts made from a number of sandbags. In the sea of fishermen village, the oblations are drowned. The villagers escorting the mapekelem ritual are transported by nine fisherman boats. Thousands of the villagers on mainland continued cheering and clapping. Chief of customary village Nengah Putu delivered that the pakelem procession is considered to have taken place properly and got graces. It is marked off by the sealed bottle used to invoke holy water or tirtha amrita at the bottom of the ocean has been fully contained whereas the bottle has been closed and glued. Having been informed if their melasti procession has obtained graces and fluency, all villagers welcomed it by applause. (013)

Subak to serve as an example of cultural heritage site management for UNESCO
DENPASAR - Subak as a traditional Balinese method of agricultural management is indeed very popular. UNESCO is proposing a pilot project for the management of world cultural heritage sites in Southest Asia using the subak system as a model. This pilot project aims at assisting cultural heritage sites to develop sustainable tourism strategies in order to strengthen the participation of stakeholders in the planning, development and governance of sustainable tourism, based on the context and the needs of local communities. The plan for this pilot project was revealed during a workshop on Sustainable Tourism at World Cultural Heritage Sites that was held by the UNESCO in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Culture, in Sanur on Wednesday (Oct. 21). Director of UNESCO Jakarta, Shabaz Khan, said that the workshop serves as a forum for sharing knowledge and experience, in an effort to ensure the continuity of tourism. If tourism and cultural heritage sites are managed in a responsible manner, social and economic development will be well supported, he said. Apart from
the subak, of Bali, UNESCO also chose the sites of Melaka and George Town in Malaysia, and the rice terraces in the Cordilleras, Philippines as models for site management pilot projects in Asia. “Through study and comparative analysis, the knowledge gained can be developed into the best practices for sustainable tourism management and empowerment of local communities,” said Khan. Director General of Culture for the Ministry of Education and Culture, Kacung Marijan, explained that the management of subak in Bali should be integrated, comprehensive and cross-sectoral by in-
volving all relevant ministries. Similarly, the management of subak should involve the entire community as well as provincial and county governments. “Community is the core of the subak system. On that account, the government must continue to support community-based management in preserving the subak system,” he explained. Deputy Governor of Bali, Ketut Sudikerta, said that the biggest challenge faced in maintaining the subak as a world cultural heritage is ensuring the continuity of the upstream and downstream areas including the social, economic, cultural and ecological aspects. In the upstream areas, action is required to preserve the sources of water, while in the downstream area policies are needed in order to prevent the conversion of agricultural lands into other functions. “Actions like preserving water sources and preventing land conversion through policy are not easy things to do,” he said. LONGMONT, Colo. — In an anonymous office building in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains, in a part of Colorado where cattle ranches fade into strip malls, a gravel-voiced man with a Brooklyn accent is moving through the streets of Pyongyang. Joe Bermudez is staring into a computer screen at a detailed satellite image, maneuvering his cursor past guarded checkpoints and into restricted neighborhoods where the North Korean elite live behind high concrete walls. Looking down on the city from more than 250 miles up, he lingers over what he believes is the private airport of Kim Jong Un, North Korea’s young leader, pointing out a pair of VIP helicopters and a Soviet-era biplane. He moves north, jumping across the countryside and picking out hidden tunnels, walled compounds and a small flotilla of military hovercraft designed to storm South Korea’s beaches. “Driving around,” he calls it when he follows roads in search of something new, humming absentmindedly as his eyes flick across the screen. Bermudez is a watcher, one of the largely anonymous tribe of researchers who study North Korea,
one of the world’s most isolated nations. There’s Michael Madden, a largely self-taught analyst with an encyclopedic knowledge of the government elite, and Curtis Melvin, whose research ranges from monetary policy to electricity grids and who shambles through the buttoned-down Washington think tank where he works in jeans and a frayed T-shirt. There’s Adam Cathcart at Britain’s University of Leeds and Cheong Seong-Chang at the Sejong Institute outside Seoul. There’s the longtime U.S. intelligence officer, a man quietly revered by many in these circles, who now writes Pyongyang crime novels under the pseudonym James Church. They are university professors, think tank analysts and writers for a string of North Korea-centric websites. They are collaborators and competitors. They are the Kremlinologists of Pyongyang. And
they insist North Korea is nowhere near as mysterious as you think it is. At least not always. “North Korea is a very secretive place. But it’s not as secretive as many people believe,” says Andrei Lankov, a Russian-born professor at Kookmin University in Seoul. “It’s much, much easier now to get information.” The chaos that swept North Korea during a mid-1990s famine dramatically changed how information flows in and out of the country, while policy changes have eased restrictions on visitors. Still, North Korea remains like nowhere else. It is a repressive and deeply isolated nation where the Internet is limited to a tiny elite and most outsiders are under nearconstant government surveillance. It has been ruled by one family for more than six decades, with the founder worshipped as a neardeity. It has no political opposition, no free press and no freedom of movement. But the appearance of major social change in this conservative nation may be slightly deceptive. Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz of the ruling Civic Platform is fighting to keep her job against a surging Beata Szydlo, who leads the conservative opposition party Law and Justice. The third woman candidate leads a cluster of leftwing groups, and is not considered a serious contender. The situation may seem startling in a nation known for traditional family values, but some see the dominance of women in the race as a reflection of Poland’s old male power structure. Unpopular party barons, experts say, are pushing the women forward to capitalize on voter weariness with a maledominated political culture that has been defined by infighting, drinking parties and scandals. “Women have become instruments in a political game,” said political analyst Kazimierz Kik. “The party chiefs know that many voters are against them and that they cannot win. They know that women have softer manners and will not threaten their position as leaders, and put them forward. Women are to give victory to their boss’ parties; they are not to win as individual politicians. On the whole women in Poland are better educated than men and often hold down jobs and support their families. “I think it is a good move to have women decide about the direction that our country will take,” said Mariusz Makus, 54, an interior decorator. “We are sick of men politicians. We have heard and seen enough of them. Women are softerspoken than men.” The female political surge began when former Prime Minister Donald Tusk left Poland last year to take the top European Union job in Brussels. He appointed Kopacz, a loyal ally, to be his successor as both party leader and prime minister. Kik said Kopacz’s loyalty was a guarantee to Tusk that she would not undermine him should he return to political life in Poland. Balmain H&M collaboration draws Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid NEW YORK — An event Tuesday in New York to launch the new Balmain x H&M collection turned the typical runway show up about 10 notches to a full-on party. A video intro featuring Kendall Jenner riding a futuristic subway with dancers voguing kicked off the runway show. Models showing the collection featured Jenner again along with Gigi and Bella Hadid, Karlie Kloss and Jourdan Dunn. “I think the models I chose are my friends,” said Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing. “All the girls that I love that can grab my hand and just say, ‘Don’t worry, It’s gonna be fun.’ It’s a night of love and of friendship and of fun.” The collection included beaded jackets, draped trousers and genie pants. At the end of the runway portion of the presentation, the Backstreet Boys performed a medley of some of their hits. Greatness of Ubud due to art and culture
GIANYAR - The number of tourist that visit Ubud continues to increase every year. Nowadays, this area that has consistently maintained Balinese cultural practices, is filled with groups of visitors. The progress of Ubud is slightly staggering having become a kampong of tourists when compared to the early days of tourism in Ubud. Chairman of the Institute for Community Empowerment (LPM) of Ubud, Dr. Tjokorda Gede Raka Sukawati, explained that tourism in Ubud began to develop in the 1930s when the daily activities of many Ubudiana was painting. At that time everyone was painting in a traditional manner. Then the leader of Ubud Palace at the time -Tjok Gede Agung Sukawati, invited foreign artists to provide education about painting techniques to the undagi or artists in Ubud. “The late Tjok Gede Agung Sukawati invited some painters such as Walter Spies, Rudolf Bonet and Antonio Blanco to stay at Campuan and teach various art techniques there,” he explained. Since then, there have been collaboration between local artists using their typical cultural style and westerners using their more dynamic style. “Even though there was collaboration it was essentially based on the traditions of Bali, from sketches, ngapat to ngabur techniques. And Bali remained the inspiration for and spirit of each work, so this collaboration is known as traditional modern art,” said Dr. Tjokorda Gede Raka Sukawati. After producing various works, a number of these “new Balinese paintings” were included in inter-
national exhibitions overseas. As a result, many foreign artists became interested in these works, and decided to come to Ubud themselves. “After a lot of works were produced, around 1955, Museum Puri Lukisan was built to store some of these paintings so that they would not all be sold overseas,” he explained. Over the years more and more people visited Ubud with hundreds of thousands having visited by the 1970’s. At that time, various tourist accommodations like guest houses started to be built. “Previously travelers tended to stay in Denpasar at hotels owned by the Dutch. In the 1980s, more and more travelers were coming so more guesthouses were built,” Dr. Tjokorda Gede Raka Sukawati explained. Despite the increasing number of tourist accommodations being built in Ubud, locals were encouraged to maintain their cultural practices. According to Tjokorda Raka, preserving culture provides a positive vibration and allows Bali to survive. “We are doing well because we are all practicing tradition and culture. One example is that Ubud was chosen as the world’s best destination by Travel Choice 2014. This is because of nothing other culture,” he said. (kmb35)

New Atlanta fashion museum opens with Oscar de la Renta show ATLANTA (AP) — A new museum focusing on international fashion has opened in Atlanta. The first exhibition at SCAD FASH features more than 80 Oscar de la Renta designs and opened to the public this month on the Atlanta campus of the Savannah College of Art and Design. The pieces come from the school’s permanent collection and donations from collectors and celebrities who worked with de la Renta before his death in 2014. De la Renta was a frequent donor to SCAD’s collections and the natural choice for the opening, said Laurie Ann Farrell, executive director of museums and exhibitions and curator of the showing. She hopes visitors whether casual observer or
devoted student will learn something about design. “Everybody selects their clothes as one way of signifying their identity,” Farrell said. “Even if somebody doesn’t consider themselves a fashion aficionado, I think they can come in and be inspired by what different designers have done through the years.” The pieces on display in Atlanta until Dec. 31 cover decades of work, from a 1965 black cashmere dress with a white satin collar and waist bow to a silk color-block gown designed by creative director Peter Copping for fall 2015 and worn at the Emmy awards by actress Maggie Gyllenhaal. Student-docents hold iPads with
information about each garment as they guide visitors through the 10,000 square-foot space, winding through curved galleries and small rooms featuring a source of inspiration for the designer. A white, mirrored room contains romantic wedding gowns and a silk-patterned dress inspired by Marie Antoinette while a nearby platform holds a gathering of black and red flamenco-inspired garments with dramatic ruffles and other flourishes. SINGARAJA - Climate change is one of the factors causing the decrease of fish catches out at sea. High seas make fishermen vulnerable even though Indonesia remains the best fish -producing country in the world. Volatile climactic conditions have triggered a decline in the profits of the fishery sector. Fishermen at Anturan village, Buleleng, are feeling the pinch with their catches of fish having been reduced by as much as 50 percent. Climate change and nature’s susceptibility to change have an impact on ocean fish reproduc-
tion. Allegedly changes in weather patterns are caused by the rising temperatures of the ocean’s surface and changes in the direction of sea breezes. Fishermen at Anturan village say that their catches of fish have drastically declined lately. “Last year, we could catch 10-15 quintals of fish each time we went out to sea. By the middle of this year, this amount decreased to about 3-4 quintals. This is a sharp decrease, but we still go out to sea,” said local fisherman, Gede Subawa. Subawa does not know for sure why there are less fish in the North
Bali seas now but suspects that it may be because many fishermen are now using FAD’s that lure fish into large fishing nets that are placed in shallow waters, allowing these fishermen to catch enormous amounts of fish at a time. He feels that this method is not good because there should be more fish in the open sea. Subawa also wonders it the declining number of fish is due to the presence of large fishing boats from Java that fish in North Bal waters. For just one trip out to sea, he needs to buy IDR 780,000 worth of fuel (120 litters at IDR 6,500 a
litter) . “Indeed, there have been far fewer fish over the last few months, but we don’t know why. This lack of fish means that our income also greatly declines,” said Subawa. Due to the declining number of fish, Subawa’s income has dropped from about IDR 8 million a month to just IDR 3 million a month. “Many of us suspect that the large Javanese fishing boats are to blame, but there is no definite evidence that this is the cause. He added that the water shortage is due to the severe drought but another contributing factor is the leak in the PDAM (municipal waterworks) pipeline currently under repair and the lack of natural water sources in these areas. “The lack of water is not entirely caused by drought, the faulty PDMA infrastructure is another factor,” explained Karmawan. To address this issue, Karmawan said that BPBD Bangli can only take short term measures such as supplying water through cooperation with BPBD Bali, the Social Agency, PDAM and the Urban Planning Agency. For a more long term solution BPBD Bangli is looking for water sources near the villages in need. Once these are discovered they will attempt to syphon the water using a pump. “While distributing water supplies, we also look for available springs.
In the case where their are such springs, village authorities use need to submit an official proposal for us to pump out the water to fill the reservoirs. We will surely facilitate this process,” he said. Karmawan also mentioned that this long-term solution cannot be undertaken solely by the government, but villagers also need to provide relevant information. “If any village can find a solution, please let us know. Villagers need to be pro-active,” he said. Karmawan also added that based on recent data, only three villages have submitted proposals for help in handling the water crisis; Buahan village, Serai village and Dalak Tiying at Landih village. “We are waiting for the other villages to apply or assistance,” he said, adding that a total of 73 tanks of water have been distributed to a number of areas. The water crisis not only threatens the fate of the individuals but also has a negative impact on
agriculture as seen in Pengiangan village, Susut. Their irrigation channel is getting shallower all the time so farmers there are forced to purchase water just to water their tomato plants. One local farmers, I Wayan Asa, said that in previous dry seasons, the water flow in the irrigation channels was fairly good. However, this year the water channels have slowed to a mear trickle. As a result, agricultural lands in the area are drying up so farmers are forced to buy water for IDR 15,000 per 1,100 liters, a day of their plants. “I am forced to buy water to water my tomatoes because there isn’t enough water in the irrigation channels,” he said. Although it may appear that the cost of the water for his plants is not very much, when added up over two months, it is still a substantial sum. “It would be alright if it was just one day, but this has been going on for two months, so I have spent a lot of money just on water,” he said while shaking head.

Residents of Kuta and South Kuta feeling this anxiety partly because the estuary dam in Suwung has is starting to silt. The Suwung dam is the main supply of water for customers of the Municipal Waterworks or PDAM Tirta Mangutama.
Managing Director of PDAM Tirta Mangutama, I Made Subarga Yasa, accompanied by his ranks, said that the estuary dam that supplies their water is vital and that of the 500 liters per second of water that it can provide, PDAM Badung uses 350 liters per second. “Water from the dam is distributed to customers in Kuta and South Kuta,” he said. According to Yasa, the surface of the water has been depleting due to silting. The celebration is very colorful. The brothel said workers saw him drink alcohol and take supplements sold as “herbal Viagra.” The Food and Drug Administration issued a warning in 2013 against one brand he took, Reload, after it was found to contain sildenafil, the active ingredient in prescription Viagra. He also told at least one of the women that he had done cocaine, but the brothel says it did not see him take any drugs. Love Ranch owner Dennis Hof has said that Odom arrived Oct. 10 for a four-day stay and spent $75,000 on two women who accompanied him in a VIP suite. Test results from blood samples obtained through a warrant still are pending, and authorities have not ruled out the possibility of taking action against the brothel or Odom. (ap)

Chris Rock to host Oscars
LOS ANGELES - US comedian and actor Chris Rock will return to host the Oscars in February for a second time, organizers announced on Wednesday. “Chris Rock is truly the MVP of the entertainment industry,” David Hill and Reginald Hudlin, the producers of the show that will be held February 28 in Los Angeles, said in a statement. “Comedian, actor, writer, producer, director, documentarian – he’s done it all. He’s going to be a phenomenal Oscar host!” The 50-year-old Rock -- a veteran of “Saturday Night Live” and star of several films -- confirmed his appearance with a tweet that said “Look who’s back.” Rock last hosted the Oscars in 2005 when “Million Dollar Baby” won best picture. He got mixed reviews, with some panning his performance and others praising his biting humor. Many at the time took offense to his attacks against several actors including Jude Law and Colin Farrell. AREAS in Bangli that are experiencing water shortages and drought are becoming increasingly widespread. In mid September their were only 7 villages that lacked water, but now more than ten villages having water problems as a result of the worsening drought in the area. The Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) and other related agencies are overwhelmed trying to provide water to all those in need. Head of BPBD Bangli, I Wayan Karmawan, accompanied by Division Head of Emergency and Logistics, I Ketut Agus Sutapa, explained that since the beginning of the dry season in July until about mid-September, villages in Kintamani subdistrict such as; Abang Batudinding, Suter, Trunyan, Bantang and Songan A have been facing drought conditions. Villages in Susut subdistrict including Yangapi village, and Landih village in Bangli are also short of water. As of mid-October, Jehem and Peninjoan villages in Tembuku have been added to the list of villages struck with severe water shortages along with Buahan, Abang Songan and Serai in Kintamani. “Tembuku is the worst hit by the lack of water along with Bangli.
