LAS VEGAS — Miley Cyrus can’t stop. The pop singer was a crowd favorite at the iHeartRadio music festival day event Saturday in Las Vegas. Before she hit the stage, the crowd of a few hundred chanted: “Miley! Miley! Miley!” The 20-year-old emerged onstage in all white, wearing a tight corset and high wasted shorts that revealed some of her backside. Her four-song set opened with the anthemic “We Can’t Stop,” where people onstage were dressed in flower, mushroom and rainbow costumes. She gyrated and slapped a dwarf-sized dancer’s butt onstage. She followed the colorful performance with “Party In the USA.” But it was her emotional rendition of “Wrecking Ball” that was her set’s highlight. Cyrus’ mascara was running as she left the stage after the song and the performance comes days after she announced she was no longer engaged to actor Liam Hemsworth. She thanked the audience for helping the song top the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week. “I couldn’t have done it without all you guys,” she said. DENPASAR - Inclusion of Besakih Temple in the National Tourism Strategic Area (KSPN) based on proposal of Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika was not only opposed by the academicians and the Hindu Dharma Council (PHDI) of Bali, but also by the circles of Bali House. A number of legislators reminded Pastika not to think too pragmatically to sell off and exploit the temple area for the sake of tourism. Moreover, the proposal on the inclusion of Besakih Temple in the KSPN was absolutely without discussion in the Bali House and

the governor seemed to take action alone. “Do not sell off everything. Never exploit the Besakih Temple. I do not agree if the Besakih Temple is included in the KSN,” said Chairman of Commission III of the Bali House, Gusti Made Suryanta

Putra. The politician fondly called Sena claimed just to know about the inclusion of Besakih into the KSPN from media because there had been no discussion in the Bali House about it. He also regretted why there was no coordination with the House. “We do not know at all and there has been no prior discussion in the House. Necessarily, it should first involve all parties,” said Sena. This PDI-P politician strongly criticized the inclusion of Besakih Temple in the KSPN. He asked

the policy should be reviewed or even revoked. “The sanctum area should not automatically be sold off like that. Never exploit temples as tourist attraction. All this time, our temple has become tourist attraction in unwritten manner. Hopefully, it is not directly included in the KSPN. Let the temple be a Hindu spiritual place,” he protested. PHDI, Karangasem government, community leaders and other components of Besakih to sit together. Inclusion of Besakih Temple in the KSNP might not be let disrupt the Hindus to worship and even injure the temple sanctity or become a boomerang and kindle the arrival of investment infringing the spatial plan. “The governor should listen first to the people’s aspirations. Denpasar-Gilimanuk traffic stays uncertain Tabanan (Bali Post)—

The deadly Denpasar-Gilimanuk path passing through Tabanan began to get the attention from central government. At least, three shortcut or flyover projects were built at this path. Unfortunately, despite the project is accelerated, the traffic flows in the shortcut path remains uncertain. The three shortcuts built are respectively over the Yeh Ho River (East Selemadeg), Yeh Lambuk River (Selemadeg) and Samsam (Kerambitan). The accelerated implementation is targeted to be in operations next year. However, the previous path has not been ascertained to be functioned. “We have not been able to perform the study. It’s a national road, so the traffic engineering authority lies in central government,” said the Head of the Tabanan Transportation, Communication and Informatics Agency, Made Agus Hartawiguna, Saturday (Sep 21). According to him, the study and traffic engineering of the three shortcuts would be held by the Ministry of Transportation through the Institute of Road and Lake Traffic. Representative of the Ministry of Transportation had existed in Bali. However, Agus said there had been no specific discussion related to the traffic engineering plan. “So far, there has been no discussion how the traffic will look like later on,” said the former subdistrict head of West Selemadeg. Nevertheless, Agus ensured the pres-

ence of the three shortcuts would reduce congestion and accidents on the DenpasarGilimanuk deadly pathway because location of the shortcut projects was the most accident-prone. Winding path and sharp climb condition required a shortcut. Agus said the Denpasar-Gilimanuk road section belonged to national category of number two because it had the most climbs and sharp turns. Then, the traffic accidents that frequently occurred at the location were like truck rolling up to plunging into the abyss. Later on, the rugged terrain would be replaced with shortcut. Aside from the shortcut, the cargo delivery could be made by sea. Moreover, most cargos transported through the DenpasarGilimanuk route were mostly unloaded in Denpasar area. “However, it is not an easy policy because the cargo transportation cannot be easily diverted to sea line,” he said. Opening of the road section of Soka (Selemadeg) heading for Kuta (Badung) can be another solution to overcome death pathway of Tabanan. (kmb30)

Seven countries in South Asia learned about Balinese woman culture in Gianyar. A total of 14 delegates learned about the culture, tourism, economy and so on in the business premises located at the Family Income Improvement Endeavor (UPPKS) Dahlia performed by Balinese women located at Dangin Jalan hamlet, Guwang village, Sukawati subdistrict. Number of patients undergoing treatment at the Bali Mental Hospital (RSJ) in Bangli shows an increase through the years. Evidently, the data owned by the Mental Hospital indicate an increase in the number of patient both the outpatient and inpatient treatment reaching hundreds of people a year. They indicate the mental health of Balinese people continues to decline from year to year. Based on the data from the past five years, the outpatient treatment in Bangli continues to show a significant increase. As recorded, a total of 7,087 patients were treated in 2008, then 7,989 patients (2009), 829 patients (2010), 15,943 patients (2011) and 19,923 patients (2012). Meanwhile, the number of patient hospitalized in 2008 reached 4,451 people, 4640 people (2009), 4,920 people (2010), 5,234 people (2011) and 5,060 people (2012). Then, until September this year, the number of patient hospitalized increased 308 people. According to the Division Head of the Medical Services of the Bali Mental Hospital, I Wayan Sukrata, the increasing number of patient was caused by several factors. Aside from the increase in the community mental disorders, it could also be caused by higher level of public awareness to check their mental condition to Mental Hospital. In spite of the factors, he added, in general there were several factors causing mental disorders in the community. Some of them were genetic or hereditary factor, parenting, stress in life and environmental factor, including socio-economic factor. To recover the psychiatric condition of patients, all this time the Mental Hospital strived to provide a number of services, both the inbuilding services including for the outpatient

and inpatient care and outside the building services such as the integrated services to a number of clinics in Bali. “There are home visit and home care for patients with problems. For example, patients rarely making control often get recurrent and so forth,” said Sukrata. Related to the persistence of mental patients put in the stocks by society, Sukrata also recognized the increasing cases from year to year. In 2012, a total of 32 cases of mental disorder patient in the stocks could be treated properly. Such amount had increased in 2013. As of September this year, his party had handled 38 patients with mental disorder in the stocks. The amount could possibly increase due to high stigma against people with mental disorders in the community. “A lot of people are still embarrassed when having family members suffering a mental disorder so that they are kept secret and do not get optimal treatment,” he said. Specifically for the treatment of patients in the stocks, explained Sukrata, there were differences in the matter of handling compared to the other psychiatric patients. Patients in the stocks were also usually accompanied by physical abnormalities, such as injuries and some had contractures or stiffness in the joints due to prolonged stocks. “Therefore, patients in the stocks, other than in need of mental handling, also need treatment for their physical abnormalities. As the causes are complex, then the handling of patients with mental disorders including those in the stocks requires cooperation of various parties such as the Mental Hospital with the Health Agency along the staff, Social Affairs, the regent along the staff and Social Services, including the security forces,” he said while adding that his party would strive to accomplish the Stocks-free Bali Program in 2014. Trisna Jayanti win Ms. Hard Rock Bali 2013 IBP

KUTA - Hard Rock Hotel Bali officially introduces Ms. Trisna Jayanti (Ina) as the winner of Ms. Hard Rock Bali 2013. Crowned during the Grand Final Night at Centerstage, 16 September 2013, Ina won the coveted title after becoming the best in all criteria. Prior to the Grand Final Night, the finalists were introduced to the public on Friday, 13 September, at the Finalist Midori Foam Party on Saturday, 14 September; and challenge events all the way until the final night. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Miss World final sets at BNDCC Antara

DENPASAR - The final round of the Miss World 2013 beauty pageant is to be held at Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center in Badung district on Saturday, September 28. “The finals will be staged at BNDCC,” chairwoman of Miss Indonesia Organization Liliana Tanoesoedibjo said. The finals are to be broadcast to 160 countries, she said. She also said that following the coronation of Miss World 2013 on Saturday, the winner is scheduled to meet with members of the media at Mangpura Hall at Bali International Convention Center in Nusa Dua. Initially the contest was to be held in Bali, with the final round in Sentul, Bogor, West Java. But following protests from Muslim organizations, the government requested that the entire pageant be hosted in Bali. The contest includes 130 participants from across the world.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, Miss World 2013 contestants prayed for world peace and harmony at the World Peace Monument in Kertalangu cultural village.

“This prayer is for the commemoration of World Peace Day that falls on Saturday (Sept 21),” Liliana said. She added that the mass prayers, which were led by a number of priests and religious leaders, were organized by a group that has been created by the organizer to promote world peace. “The program has been carried out since 1982 by the United Nations. This did not happen all of sudden or accidentally but (through it) we, as human beings, wish to preserve harmony in the world,” she said. The contestants participating in the prayers wore white dresses as they prayed according to their faiths. “We must celebrate that all unite for peace, (and are) peaceful towards each other. We live in this world and so must create peace,” the contestant from Britain, Kristy Heslewood, said.

She said to help create peace, she wished to help others who are not as fortunate by providing humanitarian aid. When asked about the many conflicts throughout the world, Kristy said people should help, understand and love each other. “We must work together and understand each other’s religion and culture. The more we can accept others, the greater the chance will be for us to be able to live side by side and love each other,” she said. PEMBROKE, N.Y. — Three sisters have been reunited in western New York some 73 years after their mother abandoned the older two and disappeared with the youngest sister. The Daily News of Batavia reported Saturday that the sisters — 80-year-old Joan Billings, 78-year-old Shirley Mortellaro and 77year-old Mary Kidwell — were reunited this month after decades of searching for each other. The sisters’ story begins in 1940 in Toronto, where their father was in the Canadian Air Force. The sisters told the newspaper that when their father was away, their mother would put them in the bedroom and tell them to stay there while she went partying. One day, the sisters said, they caught their mother with a boyfriend and told their father. A fight ensued and the mother packed quickly and left with her youngest daughter. The two older sisters settled in western New York — Billings in Albion and Mortellaro in Pembroke — while Kidwell ended up in Columbus, Ohio. Billings and Mortellaro both married, Billings twice. Billings has six surviving children, having lost a daughter at age 33. Mortellaro and her husband Tony have three daughters; Kidwell, who is widowed, has four children. The two older sisters spent years looking for Mary, and she looked for them as well. That search ended about three weeks ago when Mortellaro got a call from her grandson’s girlfriend’s mother in Florida, who had taken up the search.

Road unpaved, agricultural products sold cheaply

Farmers at Manik Aji hamlet and the surrounding areas, Ban village, Kubu, Karangasem, hoped the road on the hill ranges bordering with Trunyan could be paved, Friday (Sep 20). Condition of the unpaved road caused them to have difficulty to transport and market their crops. At the village, nobody wanted to buy, even if there were buyers. Theirs would be bargained at very cheap price. Farmers got difficulty to transport their agricultural products to be sold to the market as the road along 3 km had not been paved. Actually, the agricultural products of local farmers were potential such as cassava, taro, bananas and garlic. Since a few months ago, farmers had started planting citrus. Aside from the potential agricultural products with fertile soil, the area also offers cool air on the high altitude. As a result, grass and forage are available almost throughout the year. Each farmer raises three to six cattle and theirs look fat. However, farmers should lead their cattle on foot far enough to reach truck on the asphalt road that will transport theirs to cattle market. Hamlet Chief of Manik Aji, Nengah Subagia, said that local administrative hamlet consisted of three customary villages namely the Manikaji, Asti and Kaliaga. The road to Manikaji along 3 km had not been paved yet. It already had the road body and local people could independently concrete the climb only, so that it was easily passed through by motorcycles. Farmer said less smooth transportation caused their tobacco leaf to be unable to be sold outside the village. When sold, they would be bargained at very cheap price. Likewise, the price of cassava was very cheap, so that it was neglected and even discarded or used for fodder. However, if sold outside the village, the cost of motorcycle taxi was very high, so that it did not cover the selling price of the agricultural products. Residents through Hamlet Chief Nengah Subagia expected the government to immediately pave the road, so that the access to market outside the village could be easier. On the request of local residents, the Deputy Regent of Karangasem, Made Sukerana, said at Manik Aji that his party welcomed any input of local residents. In the near future, the staff of Karangasem Public Works was planned to conduct a survey and measurement to the road and path length. As planned, the road to Manik Aji would be paved based on budget availability and if it was enough, it would be entirely paved. If the budget was limited, the pavement would be carried out in stages. Mulyani further said that all countries throughout the world were confronted with the same problems, whether they were poor, developing or advanced. Developing countries, she stated, needed US$1 trillion to US$ 2 trillion to support growth, increase productivity, alleviate poverty and improve people’s welfare. When the way appeared clear, crying mothers clutching small children and blood-splattered men sprinted out of the four-story mall. At least 39 people were killed and more than 150 wounded in the assault, Kenya’s president announced on national TV, while disclosing that his close family members were among the dead. Foreigners were among the casualties. France’s president said that two French women were killed. Two Canadians were killed, including a diplomat, said the Candadian prime minister. Four American citizens were reported injured but not killed in the attack, the State Department said Saturday. Early Sunday morning, 12 hours after the attack began, gunmen remained holed up inside the mall with an unknown number of hostages. President Uhuru Kenyatta called the security

operation under way “delicate” and said a top priority was to safeguard hostages. As the attack began shortly after noon Saturday, the al-Qaida-linked gunmen asked the victims they had cornered if they were Muslim: Those who answered yes were free to go, several witnesses said. Houses were filled to their roofs with dirt and vehicles were tossed on their sides when the hillside collapsed Monday afternoon after several days of rain brought by Tropical Storm Manuel, which along with Hurricane Ingrid gave Mexico a one-two punch last weekend. “As of today, there is little hope now that we will find anyone alive,” said President Enrique Pena Nieto after touring the devastation, adding that the landslide covered at least 40 homes. PALEMBANG - The Islamic Solidarity Games open in Indonesia this weekend following a chaotic run-up, with controversy over female athletes competing in sports bikinis adding to the turmoil. Some nations demanded that all women cover up for the beach volleyball, track and field, and swimming events, but organisers have refused to axe the two-piece sporting outfits. “If some countries do not want to use the bikini, that’s fine, but if other countries want to, we will allow that,” senior organising committee member Djoko Pramono told AFP. “We agreed to apply international rules, including the dress code.” Thousands of athletes from 44 nations with Muslim populations will come together for the games, but only those ruled by Islamic governments opposed the bikini, Pramono said, adding they complained collectively. He did not mention the countries which complained by name. This year is the second time the games have been held, the first in Saudi Arabia, where not only were there no bikinis, but men and women competed on separate days and men were barred from watching women swim. Some countries also asked the organisers to again run male and female
