Jacky Cheung thinks concert album worth the wait

HONG KONG — The early sales figures for Jacky Cheung’s longawaited concert album echo the singer’s belief that the music industry needs quality, not speed. One of Cantonese pop’s Four Heavenly Kings, Cheung did his 1/2 Century Tour three years ago to coincide with his 50th birthday, but the live concert DVD was not released until this month. His goal was to recreate the live concert experience, so he reasoned that both time and costs were not a priority. “The production cost, from the packaging, to the recording to the filming is much higher than before. There are things like 3D, so the whole production actually was quite expensive,” he said. “But I don’t think so much of it. We’re not rushing to get it out there. We wish to have control over the quality of the product. I want my fans, or anyone who buys my concert album to think, oh they’ve put in a lot of effort. I hope they can feel that and continue to support our music industry.” The album went on sale Friday but has sold 40,000 copies through pre-order sales, a hard feat when more and more people purchase music digitally these days. Cheung’s record company congratulated his success with two framed
double platinum discs. Cheung is in no hurry to hold another concert in the near future. “People who want to watch my concerts know that I need new material before I will agree to perform,” he said. “I hope I come up with new ideas really soon, so I can tell myself that I’m ready to perform. I want to perform. I really hope I have new material before that happens.” Cheung added that the music industry needs more quality singers and performers, and he’s doesn’t fear having competitors for his pop idol status. “I think it’s a good thing if we have more “Kings of Pop” and things like that. Right now when I put out albums, or new material, my fans would do anything, to spend money to have our products. I hope that more good singers, good performers, idols would have that too, to have more fans to support our music industry. Then I’ll be content,” he said. Cheung is one of the few Hong Kong artists to maintain a steadfast fan base 20 years after his debut. His bestselling al-

SAN DIEGO — Moviegoers were ready for a fright this weekend, sending “The Conjuring” into first place at the box office, while “R.I.P.D.” became the summer’s latest big-budget action film to bite the dust. “The Conjuring,” a haunted-house thriller from Warner Bros., debuted with $41.5 million in North American ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday. Starring Vera Farmiga, Lili Taylor, Patrick Wilson and Ron Livingston, “The Conjuring” unseated two-week box-office champ “Despicable Me 2,” which dropped to second place with $25 million. “The Conjuring” was among four new releases tempting moviegoers this weekend. The newest animated offering, Fox’s “Turbo,” opened with $21.5 million, good for third place. Fox’s head of domestic distribution, Chris Aronson, characterized the opening as “a very promising start,” noting that the film won’t open in Europe until the fall. But Universal’s big-budget crime caper “R.I.P.D.” opened with a disappointing $12.76 million. The baby will be third in line for the British throne, and should eventually succeed grandfather Charles and father William as king or queen of Britain and 15 other countries including Canada and Australia. But little else is known about the eagerly awaited royal baby, from how it will arrive to its gender or its name.

It is not clear if she will have a natural birth or deliver by a planned cesarean section. Royal watchers must wait to be told of the baby’s arrival from the palace, which is planning to reveal the news through a mixture of tradition and social media. Palace officials have said that the first hint will come when a royal aide emerges from the hospital with a signed bulletin carrying the Buckingham Palace letterhead. The bulletin will be given to an official who will be driven to Buckingham Palace, where it will be posted on an easel in public view in front of the building. At the same time the bulletin is posted, there will be an official announcement on Twitter and the media will be formally notified. The document will give the baby’s gender, weight and time of birth.

It could be some time before the baby’s name is made public. When William was born, a week passed before his name was announced. Charles’s name remained a mystery for an entire month. But it is the baby’s gender that is of particular interest because the prospect of Kate’s pregnancy prompted a change to laws of succession to ensure a daughter would not be passed over for the crown by a younger brother. Boy or girl, the child will be third in line to the throne and the prospective future monarch. The birth of a new heir to the throne has been breathlessly anticipated since William and Kate wed on April 29, 2011, in a lavish ceremony at Westminster Abbey. When news of a royal pregnancy was announced, there was rejoicing in many households in Britain and throughout the world. Despite a rough start to the pregnancy, when she was hospitalized for acute morning sickness, the 31-year-old Kate made a number of public appearances that were halted only near the end of her term. Road making cancelled, residents plant it with elephant grass Negara (Bali Post)—
Road construction plan at Pasar hamlet, precisely on the riverside of Yehembang, together with the estuary flood mitigation project was canceled. Ultimately, local residents planted it with elephant grass and other garden plants. Such an action was an expression of resentment against the project implementer that did not continue the road construction in the east of the river. Initially, in the socialization before the road construction was worked on, the residents were told if a road would be made from the end of Yehembang Bridge leading to the beach. Width of the road would reach three meters so that it could be passed through by car and could become an alternative in case the road from market was crowded. As a matter of fact, the road had been prepared but not been flattened, while some of them had not been backfilled. Therefore, it could be passed through by vehicles. Even, for the smooth construction of the road, it had been agreed to provide compensation for the land acquisition. Unluckily, so far there had been no continuation. “Currently, the road is unusable. We do not know why it is not undertaken,” explained one of the residents. Ultimately, the residents took advantage of the road to grow fodder such as elephant grass and cassava. “Rather than being unused, the land is better to be cultivated,” said Ketut Kami, one of the local residents.

Advertisement rampant on shade trees

Shade trees along the main roadside downtown Singaraja seem to be still taken advantage for advertising places. Based on the existing rules, local government prohibits the advertising company from placing any advertisement materials on shade trees. The rampant advertisement on shade trees seems to have made the existing rules inefficacious to crack down on the violations. As observation in the field Sunday (Jul 21), both large-size and small-size shade trees remained to become the target for companies to advertise their products. Small-size advertisement
was posted on the shade trees fastened with nails. In addition, there were also companies placing their ads by tying it on tree trunks using iron wire. Aside from damaging the beauty of urban areas, the placement of advertisement materials on the shade trees also harmed the trees due to the iron nails pierced or iron wire. Even, the regional bylaw had clearly forbidden the placement of advertisement materials on the trunk of shade tree by using iron nail. Although it has been set in the regional bylaw, the relevant agency in Buleleng County seemed ‘ignorant’ and neglected the rampant advertisement placement on
the shade trees. Weakness of the government in cracking down on the advertisers taking advantage of the shade trees began to cause a concern among the public or non-government organizations (NGOs) in Buleleng like the Bali Environmental Youth Care (PPLB). This NGO began installing the signpost prohibiting the companies from placing their ads on the shade trees. The signpost reading “Stop Advertising on Shade Trees” was mounted on Jalan Sudirman, Singaraja, precisely in front of the Banyuasri cemetery. It was posted just below an old shade tree. (kmb)

The enigma on the Benoa Bay reclamation project begins to unfold. In fact, the project that will make a new island has emerged in 2006. However, at that time, Governor Dewa Berata did not respond to the project proposal. More sadly, though it remained a plan, the reclamation project has claimed a casualty. One of the investors suddenly died when discussing about the reclamation plan. It was revealed by Chairman of Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) of Tabanan Chapter, Ida Bagus Putu Astina, to Bali Post, Sunday (Jul 21). The man having directly involved in the reclamation plan said the Benoa Bay reclamation was initially proposed by PT Pacific Propertindo Jaya, Jakarta. Based on the proposal, the concept would like to design and develop tidal land and stagnant land due to abrasion at the Tanjung Benoa into integrated tourism resort. The proposal, he said, got a recommendation from the Bali House to make an assessment, including from the chief of customary village around the location. “However, at that time Governor Dewa Berata did not take action and even did not give a response,” recalled the Director of BIWI Group. Then, the discussion on the reclamation continued. A peculiarity arose. One of the two investors handling the project suddenly died. It happened in Jakarta when they were busy discussing about the reclamation at Benoa Bay. “We do not correlate the death of the investor to the reclamation. However, as a Balinese resident, we are confident it has something to do with it,” said the man running for the candidate of the Bali Regional Representative Council (DPD). When the investor died, the reclamation plan directly went down and even disappeared. Actually, at that time, the investors had brought in a dredger to check the sea sand supply for the reclamation at Benoa. The reclamation plan re-emerged in July 2012. One of the investors, PT Curah Laju Reklamasi Pratama, Jakarta, came to Bali. When it came, the investor exposed the reclamation plan. The difference lay in the purpose of the Benoa Bay reclamation where it was intended to expand the harbor cruise like in Monaco. “Since I got involved in the cruise industry, I was immediately interested in joining and then appointed the director,” said Astina. If the project was developed it would have a positive impact on Bali. Armed with the exposure, his party and the investor with initial R had made an audience with the Regent of Badung and then he was directed to make coordination with the Badung Development Planning Agency (Bappeda). Finally, the investor made a feasibility study by involving foreign consultant. According to Astina, the investor was indeed a specialist in performing reclamation, in which one of them was undertaken around Jakarta. In reality, having worked for several months, the reclamation plan even deviated. The project ultimately would like to make a new island with the concept of integrated tourism resort. As planned, the reclaimed island would be sold or leased per plot. The region would be transformed into an integrated tourism resort and then dropped in by cruise ships as found in Europe and Singapore. Another peculiarity re-emerged. When holding a meeting at a hotel in Sanur, Denpasar, the investor suddenly fell unconscious and was rushed to hospital and hospitalized. Not only that, Astina admitted if he was frequently visited by a figure of big man when joining in the reclamation project. The figure, he said, continued to scold him. “After asking for directive, we decided to withdraw from the project. Since then, the great figure resembling the Lord Varuna never showed up again,” he said. He also offered an apologized oblation to the location. Reflecting from the incident, he suggested the reclamation project at Benoa Bay should be discontinued. The owner of the Astina Law Firm worried if the project would claim another casualty. Then, the condition of Bali’s nature would be damaged and lose its authenticity. (kmb30)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Some are reviewing and changing their online habits as they reconsider some basic questions about today’s interconnected world. Among them: How much should I share and how should I share it? Some say they want to take preventative measures in case such programs are expanded. Others are looking to send a message — not just to the U.S. government but to the Internet companies that collect so much personal information. “We all think that nobody’s interested in us, we’re all simple
folk,” said Doan Moran of Alexandria, Louisiana. “But you start looking at the numbers and the phone records ... it makes you really hesitate.” Last month former government contractor Edward Snowden leaked documents revealing that the National Security Agency, as part of its anti-terrorism efforts, had collected the phone records of millions of Americans. A second NSA program called PRISM forces major Internet firms to turn over the detailed contents of communications such as emails, video chats, pictures and more. Moran’s husband, an ex-Army man, already was guarded about using social media. Now she is looking through her Facebook “friends” to consider whom to delete, because she can’t know what someone in her network might do in the future. Moran
said she’s uneasy because she feels unclear about what the NSA is keeping and how deep the agency’s interests might go. Gold rush-era discards could fuel cellphones, TVs

SACRAMENTO, California — Across the U.S. West, early miners digging for gold, silver and copper had no idea that one day something else very valuable would be buried in the piles of dirt and rocks they tossed aside. There’s a rush in the U.S. to find key components of cellphones, televisions, weapons systems, wind turbines, MRI machines and the regenerative brakes in hybrid cars, and old mine tailings piles just might be the answer. They may contain a group of versatile minerals the periodic table called rare earth elements. “Uncle Sam could be sitting on a gold mine,” said Larry Meinert, director of the mineral resource program for the U.S. Geological Survey in Reston, Virginia. The USGS and Department of Energy are on a nationwide scramble for deposits of the elements that make magnets lighter, bring balanced hues to fluorescent lighting and color to the touch screens of smartphones in order to break the Chinese stranglehold on those supplies. They were surprised to find that the critical elements could be in plain sight in piles of rubble otherwise considered eyesores and toxic waste. One era’s junk could turn out to be this era’s treasure. “Those were almost never analyzed for anything other than what they were mining for,” Meinert said. “If they turn out to be valuable that is a win-win on several fronts — getting us off our dependence on China and having a resource we didn’t know about.” The 15 rare earth elements were discovered long after the gold rush began to wane, but demand for them only took off over the past 10 years as electronics became smaller and more sophisticated. They begin with number 57 Lanthanum and end with 71 Lutetium, a group of metallic chemical elements that are not rare as much as they are just difficult to mine because they occur in tiny amounts and are often stuck to each other. Unlike metals higher up on the table such as silver and gold, there’s no good agent for dissolving elements so closely linked in atomic structure without destroying the target. It makes mining for them tedious and expensive. “The reason they haven’t been explored for in the U.S. was because as long as China was prepared to export enough rare earths to fill the demand, everything was fine — like with the oil cartels. When China began to use them as a political tool, people began to see the vulnerability to the U.S. economy to having one source of rare earth elements,” said Ian Ridley, director of the USGS Central Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center in Colorado. Two years ago, China raised prices — in the case of Neodymium, used to make Prius electric motors stronger and lighter, from $15 a kilogram in 2009 to $500 in 2011, while Dysprosium oxide used in lasers and halide lamps went from $114 a kilogram in 2010 to $2,830 in 2011. There’s also the time China cut off supplies to Japan, maker of the Prius, in a dispute over international fishing territory.

Meanwhile, at separate location, an economist from the Undiknas University, Prof. Sri Darma, said that each region had a desire to invite investors to accelerate the distribution and expansion of the economy in order to prosper the people. However, the arrival of investors sometimes was acceptable, while the others were unacceptable. “Pros and cons are a commonplace in democracy. The problem is that whether the arrival of investor is dominantly beneficial or detrimental to people,” he said.
Sri Darma said the arrival of investors should be welcomed with scientific study and put forward positive thinking. According to him, the investors would not invest if the return on investment (ROI) was not feasible. Even, they did not dare to take risk if the investment was not safe. “The government expects the coming of many investors, but does not provide security for their investment,” he explained. If the investment plan had passed through a scientific study, according to the Rector of the Undiknas University, it was likely to provide opportunities for investors to invest. “The problem needs resolving is why they only invest in Southern Bali? Is there anything wrong in the infrastructural planning of Bali development so that investors are not willing to invest in the Eastern, Northern and Western

Then, a young puppeteer, Made Georgiana Triwinadi, 15, from Tegallinggah hamlet, Bedulu, Blahbatuh, also got involved in the show by presenting the Arjuna Tapa storyline, telling about Arjuna when his meditation was disturbed by Niwata Kawaca. The Bali Puppetry Festival and Seminar lasted until September 27. It had become a new art tourism for Gianyar County. Director of the House of Masks and Setia Darma Puppet, Agustinus Prayitno said that his party currently collected 1,300 masks and 5,700 puppets from Indonesia and abroad. Those collections were on display in nine buildings with a total area of 1.4 hectares. Exhibition of the
masks and puppets was held every day and open to the public. Other than for tourism purposes, it was also intended for conservation efforts, education and the development of the mask and puppet arts, he explained. The puppet festival was followed by puppeteers from several countries such as Japan (Bunraku Puppet), Iran (Kheimeh Shad puppet), Malaysia (Trenggano Cendayu puppet), the Philippines (Usbong Baclajon puppet), China, India and Thailand. The foreign artists would present their respective culture. Meanwhile, the Indonesian artists also took part in the festival, so that it could become a cultural rendezvous of various puppeteers from many countries including, Golek Puppet (Batavia), Beber Puppet (Wonosari), Potehi Puppet (Semarang),
Kancil Puppet (Central Java), Balinese Leather Puppet (Wayan Sidia), Kampung Sebelah Puppet (Ki Jeliteng) and Sasak Puppet (Lombok). The Regent of Gianyar, Anak Agung Bharata, attending the event welcomed the presence of the House of Masks and Puppets because they became attraction in the arts, culture and tourism. Hopefully, the support could affect the increase in tourist arrivals. The puppet festival was also meant to be a preservation of the puppetry art getting less attention in the hearts of the audience, especially among the younger generation. CANBERRA, Australia - The U.S. Navy said on Monday it is considering salvaging four unarmed bombs dropped by U.S. fighter jets into Australia’s Great Barrier Reef Marine Park last week when a training exercise went wrong. The two AV-8B Harrier jets launched from the amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard during joint exercises with the Australian military each jettisoned an inert, concrete-filled practice bomb and an unarmed laser-guided explosive bomb into the World Heritage-listed marine park off the coast of Queensland state on Tuesday. None exploded. The Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest network of coral structures, is rich in marine life and stretches more than 3,000 kilometers (1,800 miles) along Australia’s northeast coast. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, the government manager of the 345,400 square kilometer (133,360 square miles)

TOKYO - Economic reforms aimed at reanimating Japan’s sagging economy will be top of premier Shinzo Abe’s to-do list after his weekend victory in upper house polls tightened his grip on power. With control over both legislative chambers, Abe now has a strengthened hand to face down vested interests in his often factional Liberal Democratic Party at a time when the Japanese labour market is ripe for change. But where one camp sees a need for greater job security in a country of nervous and spendthrift consumers, another says too much worker protection is the root of much of the malaise that has beset Japan for the last two decades. “When I heard Mr. Abe talking about ‘decent work’, I thought it was a joke,” said Makoto Kawazoe, an official of the General Union of Young Workers in Tokyo. “What he’s trying to do is exactly the opposite of decent work, something that will increase insecurity among workers,” he said. As Japan’s economy roared to life after World War II, its companies struck a bargain with their staff: you commit
to working hard for us and we will give you a job until retirement. Lifetime employment served Japan well; it produced wealth, powered growth and provided a large measure of order in a place that prizes stability and harmony. A raft of protections grew up around the concept, guaranteeing the rights of workers. But, say economists, since Japan’s economy stopped its upward march at the end of the 1980s, firms that are no longer world beaters have been left bloated with un-needed staff. “In a greying society where demand for goods is weak, Japan needs to shift its industry from manufacturing to services,” said Yoshimasa Maruyama, chief economist at major trading house Itochu. However, under current sclerotic labour rules, it is hard to shift workers, he said. Abe says the key is helping firms make the transition. “We will provide money for
job training that would prompt greater labour mobility from mature sectors into growing sectors,” Abe told journalists earlier this month. Advocates of a labour rules rejig say as well as benefiting companies, this will be a boon for workers. They say that if a company knows it has some wiggle room once someone is in a job, they will be more likely to take on new employees on a permanent basis, reversing the trend of recent decades. Temporary workers now account for around 35 percent of the entire national workforce. As well as having little security, they also have less money. On average, a temporary worker earns 3.1 million yen ($31,000) a year in salary and bonuses, less than two-thirds what someone on a permanent contract is paid, according to figures from Japan’s National Tax Agency. With more money in their pockets, workers will have more
to spend, giving Japan’s companies more customers. That will raise the tax take and help Japanese government finances. “We will seek to realise decent work, that is, the creation of jobs that have humane working conditions and are rewarding,” Abe’s cabinet declared last month. Under the current labour rules, managers have to keep them on, which may mean sending them somewhere else in the country. If they want to keep their job, employees must accept any role their company gives them. That frequently means husbands are away from their families for the working week while they are stationed elsewhere in the country. This change is also aimed at improving the low rate of female participation in the workforce, say advocates, because a more predictable job category and workplace could create jobs that are easier for mothers to balance with childcare needs. Tokyo labour lawyer Ryo Sasaki welcomes talk of labour law reform, but cautions that new rules cannot just be framed for the benefit of companies.

In the main complex or innermost courtyard lies the worship place of Petak Grand Palace comprising the eleven and nine-tiered meru shrines. Similarly, there is also ancestral worship of Dalem Balingkang in the form of brick chamber and seven-tiered meru shrine to remind of the Seven Deities. Besides, there are long pavilion with 24 columns and 20 columns as well as mundar-mundar pavilion with 16 columns. History of the temple is much revealed in the Sukawana Inscription (Goris, 1954). It said that Sukawana village was hit by storms and the palace of Jaya Pangus was badly damaged, so that Jong Les moved to Balingkang. Balingkang itself is derived from two words Bali + ingkang. Orally and based on written evidence, it is associated with the wedding of King Jaya Pangus Harkajalancana who ruled during the period of Caka Year 1103-1191 or 1181-1269 AD. King Jaya Pangus had two queens, Paduka Bhatari Sri Parameswari Indujaketana and Paduka Sri Mahadewi Cacangkaja Cihna. In the existing folklore, his Chinese wife was named Kang Ci Wi, namely a daughter of trader from China. Then, the words Bali-Ing-Kang were combined into Balingkang. In the chronicle of Ulun Danu Batur Temple (Batur Temple) of Kintamani is mentioned about Ida Ratu Gede Ngurah Subandar or Kongco Cong Po Kong, where Empu Liem became the prominent assistant to teach war strategy and governed with principles of Asta Brata. One of the war strategy relics is immortalized in the dance of Baris Dadap, Baris Tumbak, Baris Perisi or Baris Tamiang, Baris Bajra to Baris Cina. Baris or warrior dance represents knighthood. Strong Chinese influence is evidenced at a number of villages in Kintamani having geographical names derived from Mandarin words. For example, the name of Pingan village is actually derived from the word Ping An meaning safety. Songan village comes from the Song An, Siakin village from the Sia In and Paketan village from Paket An. Early Chinese settlers also got farmland at Payangan and they gave litchi seedlings to the King of Bali. The tradition of gallivanting show (ngelawang) is also similar to the tradition of Chinese Lion Dance coming from one house to another. Many kinds of ornamental styles used to embellish the house and furniture in Bali are also adopted from Chinese arts. Such diverse influences have been widely recognized as native culture to Bali. Even, Balinese traders believe that Kongco Cong Po Kong or Ida Ratu Gede Ngurah Subandar in Kintamani is a protector that gives blessing to their trade. Likewise, the couple of deities called Rambut Sedana symbolized with the effigies made of perforated coins are believed to give a blessing to family.

BEIJING - A strong earthquake struck a rural part of western China on Monday morning, killing at least 20 people and injuring 296, according to the local government. The quake hit near the city of Dingxi in Gansu province, a region of mountains, desert and pastureland with a population of 26 million. That makes it one of China’s more lightly populated provinces, although the New Jersey-sized Dingxi area has a greater concentration of farms and towns with a total population of about 2.7 million. The deaths and injuries were reported in Min County and other rural southern parts of the municipality, Dingxi Mayor Tang Xiaoming told state broadcaster CCTV. Tang said damage was worst in the counties of Zhang and Min, where scores of homes were damaged and telephone and electricity services knocked out. Residents described shaking windows and swinging lights but little major damage and little panic. Shaking was felt in the provincial capital of Lanzhou 177 kilometers (110 miles) north, and as far away as Xi’an, 400 kilometers (250 miles) to the east.
“You could see the chandeliers wobble and the windows vibrating and making noise, but there aren’t any cracks in the walls. Shop assistants all poured out onto the streets when the shaking began,” said a front desk clerk at the Wuyang Hotel in the Zhang County seat about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the epicenter. The clerk surnamed Bao refrained from identifying herself further, as is common among ordinary Chinese. The government’s earthquake monitoring center said the initial quake at 7:45 a.m. (2345 GMT Sunday) was magnitude-6.6 and subsequent tremors included a magnitude-5.6. The quake was shallow, which can be more destructive. The center said it struck about 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) beneath the surface, while the Gansu provincial earthquake administration said it was just 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) deep. The U.S. Geological Survey measured the magnitude of the initial quake as 5.9 and the depth at 10 kilometers (6 miles). Initial measurements of an earthquake can vary widely, especially if different monitoring equipment is used. Dingxi is about 1,233 kilometers (766 miles) west of Beijing.

But several legislators from northern Flanders boycotted King Philippe I’s coronation, highlighting longstanding feuding between the nation’s Dutchspeaking Flemings and Francophones - the biggest challenge the new monarch will face. Counter-terrorism chief Ansyaad Mbai said the men were part of a violent Islamist group and were shot as the anti-terror police unit Detachment 88 conducted a raid on the street in an East Java town. “Detachment 88 had sought the men over a recent attempted suicide bombing and a case of hacking to fund militant activities,” Mbai told AFP. The police squad ambushed the men as they waited for public transport in Tulungagung district, national police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar said. JAKARTA — Indonesia will stop issuing visas on arrival to Iranians after a growing number of them have been caught smuggling drugs or have used the country as a transit point before seeking asylum in Australia, an immigration official said Friday. Amir Syamsuddin, justice and human rights minister, signed a decree on Thursday revoking the visa on arrival option for Iranians that has been in place since 2005, said Maryoto Hadi, spokesman for the immigration office. The new restrictions start Aug. 20. “Many Iranians are misusing such visa facilities,” Hadi said. “They did not come here for tourism purposes, but to smooth their way to seek asylum in Australia and for drugs smuggling.” Although the move could slow the growing flow of asylum seekers traveling to Australia by boat, he declined to say whether the decision was to fulfill a request from Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd during a meeting with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono earlier this month. “It’s clear their arrival made us overwhelmed, many came here for harmful activities,” Hadi said, adding that Indonesia will continue to issue visas to Iranians who qualify for travel after applying at its overseas embassies. JAKARTA - State Enterprises (BUMN) Minister Dahlan Iskan has opined that the national agriculture was constrained by the problem of regeneration. Speaking at a function to sign an investment cooperation between Chinese and Malaysian investors with Indonesia here on Sunday night, Dahlan said less and less young people wanted to become farmers to increase the national food commodity. “During President Soeharto’s era, many people wanted to be farmers but now they are getting old and their children don’t want to take over their parents’ job but work in the cities with enough salaries,” Dahlan said. The minister noted that even the older farmers were no longer enthusiastic to work in the rice fields because they felt sufficient to receive money from their children who worked in the cities. “Consequently, our national rice product drops from 10 tons per hectare to 5.1 tons per hectare, although we have more than 60 million hectares of agriculture land,” Dahlan said. Further, he pointed out that besides the regeneration problem, lack of knowledge about the use of good quality seeds and fertilizer also imposed serious constraint on the farmers to increase productivity. Therefore, Dahlan said the state-owned enterprises have so far been helping the farmers by providing them with superior seeds and fertilizer to increase their rice product by at least 7 tons per hectare. “Last year BUMN developed 1 million hectares of the farmers’ land, this year 2.6 million hectares and next year it will probably 3.5 million hectares,” he noted.

Marc Marquez extends points lead with US win
Marc Marquez extended his MotoGP championship lead as he claimed a second consecutive race win on his Laguna Seca debut. The Spaniard belied his inexperience of the Californian track all weekend, leading three of the four practice sessions and only missing out on pole due to a crash. It was Stefan Bradl who grabbed pole and he held his lead for over half the race. Marquez made a slightly slow start and needed to first fight back past Valentino Rossi, achieving that with a scrabbling Corkscrew pass in which both took to the dirt. Bradl was 1.6s clear after that tussle, but Marquez’s works Honda was soon shadowing the LCR example. A long chase ensued, before Marquez eventually slipped ahead into the final corner then pulled away. Bradl was still able to claim his first MotoGP podium in a comfortable second place, two seconds behind Marquez, who is now 16 points clear in the championship. Rossi had to settle for third on the top Yamaha, fending off racelong pressure from Alvaro Bautista - who was just 0.059s away from denying Rossi a podium when they charged over the line. Marquez’s title rivals Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo had gentle races to fifth and sixth as they nursed their injuries. Lorenzo had jumped to fourth early on before fading, although he still had sufficient reserves to stay clear of a muted Cal Crutchlow. The two factory Ducatis had a wild fight for eighth place, won narrowly by home rider Nicky Hayden over team-mate Andrea Dovizioso. An early crash ended Aleix Espargaro’s unbeaten CRT run. Britain’s Press Association says Baljit Ubhey, who works for the Crown Prosecution Service, confirmed that the 46year-old Gascoigne has been charged with the three offenses. Marc Marquez extends points lead with US win
Marc Marquez extended his MotoGP championship lead as he claimed a second consecutive race win on his Laguna Seca debut. The Spaniard belied his inexperience of the Californian track all weekend, leading three of the four practice sessions and only missing out on pole due to a crash. It was Stefan Bradl who grabbed pole and he held his lead for over half the race. Marquez made a slightly slow start and needed to first fight back past Valentino Rossi, achieving that with a scrabbling Corkscrew pass in which both took to the dirt. Bradl was 1.6s clear after that tussle, but Marquez’s works Honda was soon shadowing the LCR example. A long chase ensued, before Marquez eventually slipped ahead into the final corner then pulled away. Bradl was still able to claim his first MotoGP podium in a comfortable second place, two seconds behind Marquez, who is now 16 points clear in the championship. Rossi had to settle for third on the top Yamaha, fending off racelong pressure from Alvaro Bautista - who was just 0.059s away from denying Rossi a podium when they charged over the line. Marquez’s title rivals Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo had gentle races to fifth and sixth as they nursed their injuries. Lorenzo had jumped to fourth early on before fading, although he still had sufficient reserves to stay clear of a muted Cal Crutchlow. The two factory Ducatis had a wild fight for eighth place, won narrowly by home rider Nicky Hayden over team-mate Andrea Dovizioso. An early crash ended Aleix Espargaro’s unbeaten CRT run. Avintia’s Hector Barbera emerged on top in class in 10th overall, after a long battle with Colin Edwards and the prototype Pramac Ducati of Alex de Angelis.

BEIJING - A strong earthquake struck a rural part of western China on Monday morning, killing at least 20 people and injuring 296, according to the local government. The quake hit near the city of Dingxi in Gansu province, a region of mountains, desert and pastureland with a population of 26 million. That makes it one of China’s more lightly populated provinces, although the New Jersey-sized Dingxi area has a greater concentration of farms and towns with a total population of about 2.7 million. The deaths and injuries were reported in Min County and other rural southern parts of the municipality, Dingxi Mayor Tang Xiaoming told state broadcaster CCTV. Tang said damage was worst in the counties of Zhang and Min, where scores of homes were damaged and telephone and electricity services knocked out. Residents described shaking windows and swinging lights but little major damage and little panic. Shaking was felt in the provincial capital of Lanzhou 177 kilometers (110 miles) north, and as far away as Xi’an, 400 kilometers (250 miles) to the east.
“You could see the chandeliers wobble and the windows vibrating and making noise, but there aren’t any cracks in the walls. Shop assistants all poured out onto the streets when the shaking began,” said a front desk clerk at the Wuyang Hotel in the Zhang County seat about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the epicenter. The center said it struck about 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) beneath the surface, while the Gansu provincial earthquake administration said it was just 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) deep. The U.S. Geological Survey measured the magnitude of the initial quake as 5.9 and the depth at 10 kilometers (6 miles). Initial measurements of an earthquake can vary widely, especially if different monitoring equipment is used. Dingxi is about 1,233 kilometers (766 miles) west of Beijing.

JAKARTA — Indonesia will stop issuing visas on arrival to Iranians after a growing number of them have been caught smuggling drugs or have used the country as a transit point before seeking asylum in Australia, an immigration official said Friday. Amir Syamsuddin, justice and human rights minister, signed a decree on Thursday revoking the visa on arrival option for Iranians that has been in place since 2005, said Maryoto Hadi, spokesman for the immigration office. Speaking at a function to sign an investment cooperation between Chinese and Malaysian investors with Indonesia here on Sunday night, Dahlan said less and less young people wanted to become farmers to increase the national food commodity. “During President Soeharto’s era, many people wanted to be farmers but now they are getting old and their children don’t want to take over their parents’ job but work in the cities with enough salaries,” Dahlan said. The minister noted that even the older farmers were no longer enthusiastic to work in the rice fields because they felt sufficient to receive money from their children who worked in the cities. “Consequently, our national rice product drops from 10 tons per hectare to 5.1 tons per hectare, although we have more than 60 million hectares of agriculture land,” Dahlan said. Further, he pointed out that besides the regeneration problem, lack of knowledge about the use of good quality seeds and fertilizer also imposed serious constraint on the farmers to increase productivity. Therefore, Dahlan said the state-owned enterprises have so far been helping the farmers by providing them with superior seeds and fertilizer to increase their rice product by at least 7 tons per hectare. “Last year BUMN developed 1 million hectares of the farmers’ land, this year 2.6 million hectares and next year it will probably 3.5 million hectares,” he noted.

TOKYO - Economic reforms aimed at reanimating Japan’s sagging economy will be top of premier Shinzo Abe’s to-do list after his weekend victory in upper house polls tightened his grip on power. With control over both legislative chambers, Abe now has a strengthened hand to face down vested interests in his often factional Liberal Democratic Party at a time when the Japanese labour market is ripe for change. But where one camp sees a need for greater job security in a country of nervous and spendthrift consumers, another says too much worker protection is the root of much of the malaise that has beset Japan for the last two decades. “When I heard Mr. Abe talking about ‘decent work’, I thought it was a joke,” said Makoto Kawazoe, an official of the General Union of Young Workers in Tokyo. “What he’s trying to do is exactly the opposite of decent work, something that will increase insecurity among workers,” he said. As Japan’s economy roared to life after World War II, its companies struck a bargain with their staff: you commit
to working hard for us and we will give you a job until retirement. Lifetime employment served Japan well; it produced wealth, powered growth and provided a large measure of order in a place that prizes stability and harmony. A raft of protections grew up around the concept, guaranteeing the rights of workers. But, say economists, since Japan’s economy stopped its upward march at the end of the 1980s, firms that are no longer world beaters have been left bloated with un-needed staff. “In a greying society where demand for goods is weak, Japan needs to shift its industry from manufacturing to services,” said Yoshimasa Maruyama, chief economist at major trading house Itochu. However, under current sclerotic labour rules, it is hard to shift workers, he said. Abe says the key is helping firms make the transition. “We will provide money for
job training that would prompt greater labour mobility from mature sectors into growing sectors,” Abe told journalists earlier this month. Advocates of a labour rules rejig say as well as benefiting companies, this will be a boon for workers. They say that if a company knows it has some wiggle room once someone is in a job, they will be more likely to take on new employees on a permanent basis, reversing the trend of recent decades. Temporary workers now account for around 35 percent of the entire national workforce. As well as having little security, they also have less money. On average, a temporary worker earns 3.1 million yen ($31,000) a year in salary and bonuses, less than two-thirds what someone on a permanent contract is paid, according to figures from Japan’s National Tax Agency. With more money in their pockets, workers will have more
to spend, giving Japan’s companies more customers. That will raise the tax take and help Japanese government finances. “We will seek to realise decent work, that is, the creation of jobs that have humane working conditions and are rewarding,” Abe’s cabinet declared last month. Under the current labour rules, managers have to keep them on, which may mean sending them somewhere else in the country. If they want to keep their job, employees must accept any role their company gives them. That frequently means husbands are away from their families for the working week while they are stationed elsewhere in the country. This change is also aimed at improving the low rate of female participation in the workforce, say advocates, because a more predictable job category and workplace could create jobs that are easier for mothers to balance with childcare needs. Tokyo labour lawyer Ryo Sasaki welcomes talk of labour law reform, but cautions that new rules cannot just be framed for the benefit of companies.

The middle courtyard only has a few buildings, only consisting of a meeting hall, the abode of all deities and a shrine of Ratu Ayu Subandar. The shrine is used to worship Kang Ci Wi and is highly believed by Chinese descendant community to bring in blessings. In the main complex or innermost courtyard lies the worship place of Petak Grand Palace comprising the eleven and nine-tiered meru shrines. Similarly, there is also ancestral worship of Dalem Balingkang in the form of brick chamber and seven-tiered meru shrine to remind of the Seven Deities. Besides, there are long pavilion with 24 columns and 20 columns as well as mundar-mundar pavilion with 16 columns. History of the temple is much revealed in the Sukawana Inscription (Goris, 1954). It said that Sukawana village was hit by storms and the palace of Jaya Pangus was badly damaged, so that Jong Les moved to Balingkang. Balingkang itself is derived from two words Bali + ingkang. Orally and based on written evidence, it is associated with the wedding of King Jaya Pangus Harkajalancana who ruled during the period of Caka Year 1103-1191 or 1181-1269 AD. King Jaya Pangus had two queens, Paduka Bhatari Sri Parameswari Indujaketana and Paduka Sri Mahadewi Cacangkaja Cihna. In the existing folklore, his Chinese wife was named Kang Ci Wi, namely a daughter of trader from China. Then, the words Bali-Ing-Kang were combined into Balingkang. In the chronicle of Ulun Danu Batur Temple (Batur Temple) of Kintamani is mentioned about Ida Ratu Gede Ngurah Subandar or Kongco Cong Po Kong, where Empu Liem became the prominent assistant to teach war strategy and governed with principles of Asta Brata. One of the war strategy relics is immortalized in the dance of Baris Dadap, Baris Tumbak, Baris Perisi or Baris Tamiang, Baris Bajra to Baris Cina. Baris or warrior dance represents knighthood. Strong Chinese influence is evidenced at a number of villages in Kintamani having geographical names derived from Mandarin words. For example, the name of Pingan village is actually derived from the word Ping An meaning safety. Songan village comes from the Song An, Siakin village from the Sia In and Paketan village from Paket An. Early Chinese settlers also got farmland at Payangan and they gave litchi seedlings to the King of Bali. The tradition of gallivanting show (ngelawang) is also similar to the tradition of Chinese Lion Dance coming from one house to another. Many kinds of ornamental styles used to embellish the house and furniture in Bali are also adopted from Chinese arts. Such diverse influences have been widely recognized as native culture to Bali. Even, Balinese traders believe that Kongco Cong Po Kong or Ida Ratu Gede Ngurah Subandar in Kintamani is a protector that gives blessing to their trade. Likewise, the couple of deities called Rambut Sedana symbolized with the effigies made of perforated coins are believed to give a blessing to family.

Many people deplored the condition of City Park located in the north of Bangli Administration Office. The garden establish to beautify the urban look seem to get less attention. Since the past few months, the pond inside the garden area has looked to dry out. Not only that, the pavilion standing in the pond gives impression if it gets less touch of renovation. Based on observation on Sunday (Jul 21), the pond bed was overgrown by weeds because it had not been irrigated within the past few months. It would only have puddles when it rained. Besides, another poor condition was visible at the pavilion amidst the pond. Some bamboo roofs of the pavilion looked to have come off from their arrangement. Then, statues embellishing the edge of the pavilion had been overgrown by mosses. As a result, the urban park located in the south of the Bangli Health Agency always looked empty. for his confirmation recognized the condition of the park. He said the pond had been dry since the past few months due to lack of water source to irrigate it. “Formerly, the pond got wastewater from subak irrigation. Since the subak has now been inactive, the pond cannot be temporarily irrigated,” he said. He added that a few months after that his party got water assistance from the Municipal Waterworks (PDAM) of Bangli. However, such assistance did not last long. Ultimately, the pond in the middle of the park was dry until now. To resolve it, Wediatmika admitted that his party was attempting to irrigate the pond by taking water from the source located near the official residence of prosecutor. However, his party was hampered by the damage to the water channel. “Now, we’re looking for water from the north. Again, we face another problem because the water line is broken. We have also asked for the assistance to the Public Works to repair. Probably, the budget will be taken from the Amended Regional Budget,” he said. (ina)

CANBERRA, Australia - The U.S. Navy said on Monday it is considering salvaging four unarmed bombs dropped by U.S. fighter jets into Australia’s Great Barrier Reef Marine Park last week when a training exercise went wrong. The two AV-8B Harrier jets launched from the amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard during joint exercises with the Australian military each jettisoned an inert, concrete-filled practice bomb and an unarmed laser-guided explosive bomb into the World Heritage-listed marine park off the coast of Queensland state on Tuesday. None exploded. The Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest network of coral structures, is rich in marine life and stretches more than 3,000 kilometers (1,800 miles) along Australia’s northeast coast. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, the government manager of the 345,400 square kilometer (133,360 square miles)

Gold rush-era discards could fuel cellphones, TVs

SACRAMENTO, California — Across the U.S. West, early miners digging for gold, silver and copper had no idea that one day something else very valuable would be buried in the piles of dirt and rocks they tossed aside. There’s a rush in the U.S. to find key components of cellphones, televisions, weapons systems, wind turbines, MRI machines and the regenerative brakes in hybrid cars, and old mine tailings piles just might be the answer. They may contain a group of versatile minerals the periodic table called rare earth elements. “Uncle Sam could be sitting on a gold mine,” said Larry Meinert, director of the mineral resource program for the U.S. Geological Survey in Reston, Virginia. The USGS and Department of Energy are on a nationwide scramble for deposits of the elements that make magnets lighter, bring balanced hues to fluorescent lighting and color to the touch screens of smartphones in order to break the Chinese stranglehold on those supplies. They were surprised to find that the critical elements could be in plain sight in piles of rubble otherwise considered eyesores and toxic waste. One era’s junk could turn out to be this era’s treasure. “Those were almost never analyzed for anything other than what they were mining for,” Meinert said. “If they turn out to be valuable that is a win-win on several fronts — getting us off our dependence on China and having a resource we didn’t know about.” The 15 rare earth elements were discovered long after the gold rush began to wane, but demand for them only took off over the past 10 years as electronics became smaller and more sophisticated. They begin with number 57 Lanthanum and end with 71 Lutetium, a group of metallic chemical elements that are not rare as much as they are just difficult to mine because they occur in tiny amounts and are often stuck to each other. Unlike metals higher up on the table such as silver and gold, there’s no good agent for dissolving elements so closely linked in atomic structure without destroying the target. It makes mining for them tedious and expensive. “The reason they haven’t been explored for in the U.S. was because as long as China was prepared to export enough rare earths to fill the demand, everything was fine — like with the oil cartels. When China began to use them as a political tool, people began to see the vulnerability to the U.S. economy to having one source of rare earth elements,” said Ian Ridley, director of the USGS Central Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center in Colorado. Two years ago, China raised prices — in the case of Neodymium, used to make Prius electric motors stronger and lighter, from $15 a kilogram in 2009 to $500 in 2011, while Dysprosium oxide used in lasers and halide lamps went from $114 a kilogram in 2010 to $2,830 in 2011. There’s also the time China cut off supplies to Japan, maker of the Prius, in a dispute over international fishing territory.

taining marine life. “If there is reclamation, the siltation will be unavoidable. We in the tourism actually expect the dredging can be made at Benoa Harbor every year to enable cruise ships to get in and out. Now, they cannot get in whereas it is one of the mainstays, icon and focus of the future development of tourism,” he explained. Meanwhile, at separate location, an economist from the Undiknas University, Prof. Sri Darma, said that each region had a desire to invite investors to accelerate the distribution and expansion of the economy in order to prosper the people. However, the arrival of investors sometimes was acceptable, while the others were unacceptable. “Pros and cons are a commonplace in democracy. The problem is that whether the arrival of investor is dominantly beneficial or detrimental to people,” he said.
Sri Darma said the arrival of investors should be welcomed with scientific study and put forward positive thinking. According to him, the investors would not invest if the return on investment (ROI) was not feasible. Even, they did not dare to take risk if the investment was not safe. “The government expects the coming of many investors, but does not provide security for their investment,” he explained. If the investment plan had passed through a scientific study, according to the Rector of the Undiknas University, it was likely to provide opportunities for investors to invest. “The problem needs resolving is why they only invest in Southern Bali? Is there anything wrong in the infrastructural planning of Bali development so that investors are not willing to invest in the Eastern, Northern and Western

play a Balinese puppet. Meanwhile, a Balinese puppeteer, Made Sidja, presented the Sapuh Leger shadow puppet. Then, a young puppeteer, Made Georgiana Triwinadi, 15, from Tegallinggah hamlet, Bedulu, Blahbatuh, also got involved in the show by presenting the Arjuna Tapa storyline, telling about Arjuna when his meditation was disturbed by Niwata Kawaca. The Bali Puppetry Festival and Seminar lasted until September 27. It had become a new art tourism for Gianyar County. Director of the House of Masks and Setia Darma Puppet, Agustinus Prayitno said that his party currently collected 1,300 masks and 5,700 puppets from Indonesia and abroad. Those collections were on display in nine buildings with a total area of 1.4 hectares. Exhibition of the
masks and puppets was held every day and open to the public. Other than for tourism purposes, it was also intended for conservation efforts, education and the development of the mask and puppet arts, he explained. The puppet festival was followed by puppeteers from several countries such as Japan (Bunraku Puppet), Iran (Kheimeh Shad puppet), Malaysia (Trenggano Cendayu puppet), the Philippines (Usbong Baclajon puppet), China, India and Thailand. The foreign artists would present their respective culture. Meanwhile, the Indonesian artists also took part in the festival, so that it could become a cultural rendezvous of various puppeteers from many countries including, Golek Puppet (Batavia), Beber Puppet (Wonosari), Potehi Puppet (Semarang),
Kancil Puppet (Central Java), Balinese Leather Puppet (Wayan Sidia), Kampung Sebelah Puppet (Ki Jeliteng) and Sasak Puppet (Lombok). The Regent of Gianyar, Anak Agung Bharata, attending the event welcomed the presence of the House of Masks and Puppets because they became attraction in the arts, culture and tourism. Hopefully, the support could affect the increase in tourist arrivals. The puppet festival was also meant to be a preservation of the puppetry art getting less attention in the hearts of the audience, especially among the younger generation. Road making cancelled, residents plant it with elephant grass Negara (Bali Post)—
Road construction plan at Pasar hamlet, precisely on the riverside of Yehembang, together with the estuary flood mitigation project was canceled. Ultimately, local residents planted it with elephant grass and other garden plants. Such an action was an expression of resentment against the project implementer that did not continue the road construction in the east of the river. Initially, in the socialization before the road construction was worked on, the residents were told if a road would be made from the end of Yehembang Bridge leading to the beach. Width of the road would reach three meters so that it could be passed through by car and could become an alternative in case the road from market was crowded. As a matter of fact, the road had been prepared but not been flattened, while some of them had not been backfilled. Therefore, it could be passed through by vehicles. Even, for the smooth construction of the road, it had been agreed to provide compensation for the land acquisition. Unluckily, so far there had been no continuation. “Currently, the road is unusable. We do not know why it is not undertaken,” explained one of the residents. Ultimately, the residents took advantage of the road to grow fodder such as elephant grass and cassava. “Rather than being unused, the land is better to be cultivated,” said Ketut Kami, one of the local residents.

Advertisement rampant on shade trees

Shade trees along the main roadside downtown Singaraja seem to be still taken advantage for advertising places. Based on the existing rules, local government prohibits the advertising company from placing any advertisement materials on shade trees. The rampant advertisement on shade trees seems to have made the existing rules inefficacious to crack down on the violations. As observation in the field Sunday (Jul 21), both large-size and small-size shade trees remained to become the target for companies to advertise their products. Small-size advertisement
was posted on the shade trees fastened with nails. In addition, there were also companies placing their ads by tying it on tree trunks using iron wire. Aside from damaging the beauty of urban areas, the placement of advertisement materials on the shade trees also harmed the trees due to the iron nails pierced or iron wire. Even, the regional bylaw had clearly forbidden the placement of advertisement materials on the trunk of shade tree by using iron nail. Although it has been set in the regional bylaw, the relevant agency in Buleleng County seemed ‘ignorant’ and neglected the rampant advertisement placement on
the shade trees. Weakness of the government in cracking down on the advertisers taking advantage of the shade trees began to cause a concern among the public or non-government organizations (NGOs) in Buleleng like the Bali Environmental Youth Care (PPLB). This NGO began installing the signpost prohibiting the companies from placing their ads on the shade trees. The signpost reading “Stop Advertising on Shade Trees” was mounted on Jalan Sudirman, Singaraja, precisely in front of the Banyuasri cemetery. It was posted just below an old shade tree. (kmb)
Reclamation of Benoa Bay

The enigma on the Benoa Bay reclamation project begins to unfold. In fact, the project that will make a new island has emerged in 2006. However, at that time, Governor Dewa Berata did not respond to the project proposal. More sadly, though it remained a plan, the reclamation project has claimed a casualty. One of the investors suddenly died when discussing about the reclamation plan. It was revealed by Chairman of Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) of Tabanan Chapter, Ida Bagus Putu Astina, to Bali Post, Sunday (Jul 21). The man having directly involved in the reclamation plan said the Benoa Bay reclamation was initially proposed by PT Pacific Propertindo Jaya, Jakarta. Based on the proposal, the concept would like to design and develop tidal land and stagnant land due to abrasion at the Tanjung Benoa into integrated tourism resort. The proposal, he said, got a recommendation from the Bali House to make an assessment, including from the chief of customary village around the location. “However, at that time Governor Dewa Berata did not take action and even did not give a response,” recalled the Director of BIWI Group. Then, the discussion on the reclamation continued. A peculiarity arose. One of the two investors handling the project suddenly died. It happened in Jakarta when they were busy discussing about the reclamation at Benoa Bay. “We do not correlate the death of the investor to the reclamation. However, as a Balinese resident, we are confident it has something to do with it,” said the man running for the candidate of the Bali Regional Representative Council (DPD). When the investor died, the reclamation plan directly went down and even disappeared. Actually, at that time, the investors had brought in a dredger to check the sea sand supply for the reclamation at Benoa. The reclamation plan re-emerged in July 2012. One of the investors, PT Curah Laju Reklamasi Pratama, Jakarta, came to Bali. When it came, the investor exposed the reclamation plan. The difference lay in the purpose of the Benoa Bay reclamation where it was intended to expand the harbor cruise like in Monaco. “Since I got involved in the cruise industry, I was immediately interested in joining and then appointed the director,” said Astina. If the project was developed it would have a positive impact on Bali. Armed with the exposure, his party and the investor with initial R had made an audience with the Regent of Badung and then he was directed to make coordination with the Badung Development Planning Agency (Bappeda). Finally, the investor made a feasibility study by involving foreign consultant. According to Astina, the investor was indeed a specialist in performing reclamation, in which one of them was undertaken around Jakarta. In reality, having worked for several months, the reclamation plan even deviated. The project ultimately would like to make a new island with the concept of integrated tourism resort. As planned, the reclaimed island would be sold or leased per plot. The region would be transformed into an integrated tourism resort and then dropped in by cruise ships as found in Europe and Singapore. Another peculiarity re-emerged. When holding a meeting at a hotel in Sanur, Denpasar, the investor suddenly fell unconscious and was rushed to hospital and hospitalized. Not only that, Astina admitted if he was frequently visited by a figure of big man when joining in the reclamation project. The figure, he said, continued to scold him. “After asking for directive, we decided to withdraw from the project. Since then, the great figure resembling the Lord Varuna never showed up again,” he said. He also offered an apologized oblation to the location. Reflecting from the incident, he suggested the reclamation project at Benoa Bay should be discontinued. The owner of the Astina Law Firm worried if the project would claim another casualty. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Jacky Cheung thinks concert album worth the wait

HONG KONG — The early sales figures for Jacky Cheung’s longawaited concert album echo the singer’s belief that the music industry needs quality, not speed. One of Cantonese pop’s Four Heavenly Kings, Cheung did his 1/2 Century Tour three years ago to coincide with his 50th birthday, but the live concert DVD was not released until this month. His goal was to recreate the live concert experience, so he reasoned that both time and costs were not a priority. “The production cost, from the packaging, to the recording to the filming is much higher than before. There are things like 3D, so the whole production actually was quite expensive,” he said. “But I don’t think so much of it. We’re not rushing to get it out there. We wish to have control over the quality of the product. I want my fans, or anyone who buys my concert album to think, oh they’ve put in a lot of effort. I hope they can feel that and continue to support our music industry.” The album went on sale Friday but has sold 40,000 copies through pre-order sales, a hard feat when more and more people purchase music digitally these days. Cheung’s record company congratulated his success with two framed
double platinum discs. Cheung is in no hurry to hold another concert in the near future. “People who want to watch my concerts know that I need new material before I will agree to perform,” he said. “I hope I come up with new ideas really soon, so I can tell myself that I’m ready to perform. I want to perform. I really hope I have new material before that happens.” Cheung added that the music industry needs more quality singers and performers, and he’s doesn’t fear having competitors for his pop idol status. “I think it’s a good thing if we have more “Kings of Pop” and things like that. Right now when I put out albums, or new material, my fans would do anything, to spend money to have our products. I hope that more good singers, good performers, idols would have that too, to have more fans to support our music industry. Then I’ll be content,” he said. Cheung is one of the few Hong Kong artists to maintain a steadfast fan base 20 years after his debut. His bestselling al-

SAN DIEGO — Moviegoers were ready for a fright this weekend, sending “The Conjuring” into first place at the box office, while “R.I.P.D.” became the summer’s latest big-budget action film to bite the dust. “The Conjuring,” a haunted-house thriller from Warner Bros., debuted with $41.5 million in North American ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday. Starring Vera Farmiga, Lili Taylor, Patrick Wilson and Ron Livingston, “The Conjuring” unseated two-week box-office champ “Despicable Me 2,” which dropped to second place with $25 million. “The Conjuring” was among four new releases tempting moviegoers this weekend. The newest animated offering, Fox’s “Turbo,” opened with $21.5 million, good for third place. Royal officials said that Kate travelled by car to St. Mary’s Hospital in central London with Prince William. Kate — also known as the Duchess of Cambridge — is expected to give birth in the private Lindo Wing of the hospital, where Princess Diana gave birth to William and his younger brother, Prince Harry. Kate and William, who spent the weekend at Kensington Palace, traveled to the hospital without a police escort just before 6 a.m., their spokesman said. “Things are progressing as normal,” he added. The baby will be third in line for the British throne, and should eventually succeed grandfather Charles and father William as king or queen of Britain and 15 other countries including Canada and Australia. But little else is known about the eagerly awaited royal baby, from how it will arrive to its gender or its name.

It is not clear if she will have a natural birth or deliver by a planned cesarean section. Royal watchers must wait to be told of the baby’s arrival from the palace, which is planning to reveal the news through a mixture of tradition and social media. Palace officials have said that the first hint will come when a royal aide emerges from the hospital with a signed bulletin carrying the Buckingham Palace letterhead. The bulletin will be given to an official who will be driven to Buckingham Palace, where it will be posted on an easel in public view in front of the building. At the same time the bulletin is posted, there will be an official announcement on Twitter and the media will be formally notified. The document will give the baby’s gender, weight and time of birth.

It could be some time before the baby’s name is made public. When William was born, a week passed before his name was announced. Charles’s name remained a mystery for an entire month. But it is the baby’s gender that is of particular interest because the prospect of Kate’s pregnancy prompted a change to laws of succession to ensure a daughter would not be passed over for the crown by a younger brother. Boy or girl, the child will be third in line to the throne and the prospective future monarch. The birth of a new heir to the throne has been breathlessly anticipated since William and Kate wed on April 29, 2011, in a lavish ceremony at Westminster Abbey. When news of a royal pregnancy was announced, there was rejoicing in many households in Britain and throughout the world. Despite a rough start to the pregnancy, when she was hospitalized for acute morning sickness, the 31-year-old Kate made a number of public appearances that were halted only near the end of her term.
