Kim Kardashian said to have hired surrogate for third baby LOS ANGELES - Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s family may be growing, according to reports on Wednesday that the celebrity couple have hired a surrogate to carry their third child after a doctor advised the reality star against another high-risk pregnancy. People Magazine and E! News, citing unidentified sources, said the couple had hired a surrogate, and TMZ.com said they had agreed to pay the surrogate more than $113,000 to carry a child. It was not clear whether the surrogate was already pregnant. Kardashian’s representative did not respond to a request for comment. Kardashian, 36, has two children with rapper West and has spoken openly about her medical struggles during her pregnancies with daughter North, born in 2013, and son Saint, born in 2015, on her E! reality show “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.”

In a recent episode, Kardashian spoke about considering surrogacy for future children with West. The reality star has given detailed accounts on her blog about the difficulties she experienced during her two labors, and the TV show has followed her various surgeries and doctor consultations in a bid to resolve them. “I think I always knew that surrogacy was an option, but I didn’t think it was that realistic of an option, and now I feel like that’s my reality,” Kardashian said in an April episode of “Keeping Up With The Kardashians.”

The surrogacy reports come after a difficult year for the couple. Kardashian was the victim of a robbery in Paris last October, in which millions of dollars’ worth of jewelry was stolen from her. That led her to boost security measures and to take a temporary pause from public engagements and prolific social media postings. Late last year, West canceled a December tour and was hospitalized after an apparent mental health breakdown. The couple have embraced a more modest social media presence over the past few months, with Kardashian occasionally posting glimpses into their family life. (rtr)

LONDON - Some of the biggest names in British music, including Stormzy, Robbie Williams and The Who, released a charity single on Wednesday to raise funds for people affected by the fire at a tower block in west London. The song, a cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, also features performances from Leona Lewis, James Blunt and a large choir made up of local people, some of whom survived the blaze. A total of 79 people died in the fire, which swept through the 24-storey Grenfell tower on June 14th. Many people are still unaccounted for and authorities have suggested that the death toll will continue to rise as rescue workers continue to search. The single is an initiative of pop impresario and

TV talent show judge Simon Cowell. In a departure from the original version of the song, Cowell’s version opens with grime artist Stormzy rapping: “That could have been me up there / waving my white plain tee up there”, a reference to people trapped in the blaze. Reaction to the song on social media was generally positive, with Twitter user Sarah Styles saying the song was “absolutely beautiful”, while user Amy Elizabeth said the song left her “covered in goosebumps”. The song was made available for sale and radio play on Wednesday and Cowell tweeted that a video would premiere on British television that evening. UN says world population will reach 9.8 billion in 2050 UNITED NATIONS — India’s population is expected to surpass China’s in about seven years and Nigeria is projected to overtake the United States and become the third most populous country in the world shortly before 2050, a U.N. report said Wednesday. The report by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs’ Population Division forecasts that the current world population of nearly 7.6 billion will increase to 8.6 billion by 2030, 9.8 billion in 2050 and 11.2 billion in 2100. It said roughly 83 million people are added to the world’s population every year and the upward trend is expected to continue even with a continuing decline in fertility rates, which have fallen steadily since the 1960s. John Wilmoth, director of the Population Division, said at a news conference that the report includes information on the populations of 233 countries or areas of the world. “The population in Africa is notable for its rapid rate of growth, and it is anticipated that over half of global population growth between now and 2050 will take place in that region,” he said. “At the other extreme, it is expected that the population of Europe will, in fact, decline somewhat in the coming

decades.” The U.N. agency forecasts that from now through 2050 half the world’s population growth will be concentrated in just nine countries — India, Nigeria, Congo, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Tanzania, United States, Uganda and Indonesia. Those nations are listed in the order of their “expected contribution to total growth,” the report said. During the same period, it added, the populations of 26 African countries are expected to at least double. Nigeria, currently the world’s seventh largest country, has the fastest growing population of the 10 most populous countries worldwide, and the report projects it will surpass the U.S. shortly before mid-century. The new projections

also forecast that China, which currently has 1.4 billion inhabitants, will be replaced as the world’s most populous country around 2024 by India, which now has 1.3 billion inhabitants. The report, titled “The World Population Prospects: The 2017 Revision,” said fertility has been declining in nearly all regions in recent years. Between 2010 and 2015, Wilmoth said, “the world’s women had 2 1/2 births per woman over a lifetime — but this number varies widely around the world.” “Europe has the lowest fertility level, estimated at 1.6 births per woman in the most recent period, while Africa has the highest fertility, with around 4.7 births per woman,” he said. The report said

birth rates in the 47 least developed countries remain relatively high, with population growth around 2.4 percent a year. While this rate is expected to slow significantly in the coming decades, the U.N. said the combined population of the 47 countries is projected to increase by 33 percent from roughly 1 billion now to 1.9 billion in 2050. More and more countries now have fertility rates below the level of roughly 2.1 births per woman needed to replace the current generation, the report said. During the 2010-2015 period, fertility was below the replacement level in 83 countries comprising 46 percent of the world’s population, it said.

In addition to slowing population growth, low fertility levels lead to an older population, the report noted. Sales of local fruits Tourists in Padangbai to be taxed at IDR 100,000 still less than imported ones at supermarkets Tourism players rally

SINGARAJA - The sales of local fruits at supermarkets in Buleleng district are still relatively minimal. Actually, according to the appeal of central government, the availability should be more than the imported fruits. This was revealed amid the inspection on the price of basic necessity and parcel by Buleleng industry and commerce agency on Tuesday (Jun. 20) related to the celebration of Lebaran. Head of the Buleleng Industry and Commerce Agency, Ketut Suparto, explained that based on the results of his inspection at one of the supermarkets in Kampung Tinggi area, Singaraja, the fruits on sale are mostly imported ones, like apples. In the meantime, the existence of local fruits remains inadequate. “According to our inspection, the sale is still dominated by imported fruits,” he explained. Pursuant to the appeal of central government, he said the availability of local fruits should be more than the imported ones. This poses an effort to raise the agricultural sector in the region. “In the establishment of the supermarket has been mentioned such requirement. Other than regarding the employees, the products sold must also give priority to the local ones.

In the appeal, 80 percent must be local fruits and the rest can be imported ones. However, we consider that 60 percent of local fruit is good,” he said. AMLAPURA - The plan of the government of Karangasem to manage the Padangbai traditional harbor by establishing a governing body and operation management got a resistance. On Wednesday (Jun. 21), at least 25 residents consisting of representatives of fast boat businessmen, merchants and harbor workers did a demonstration to the Karangasem House of Representatives office. They protested following the plan of the district government to charge a levy at IDR 100,000 to every tourist wishing to cross to Gili Trawangan. The demonstrators claimed to have to meet with the people’s representatives because their protests and complaints conveyed to the government through the newly established governing body did not get response. Instead, there is an impression if the governing body serves as an extension of the government and forces itself to enact the most recently discussed planning at the Karangasem Bappeda office two days ago. “Padangbai is different from Besakih or Ujung. In Padangbai, tourists are just stopping to cross to Gili Trawangan. If then there is a levy worth IDR 100,000, we are worried the tourists including the boat owners will quickly run away,” said coordinator of the action, Kadek Aris Suyasa. Interestingly, this former headman of Padangbai for two periods is included in the newly established Padangbai operation management structure. He admitted to have been forced to channel his aspirations to the parliament because all the plans related to the management of Padangbai traditional harbor will soon be ratified. “We agreed to the establishment of the governing body, but we cannot accept the amount of the levies. Crossing to Gili Trawangan can be made from Pesinggahan, Sanur or Serangan. If all the boat entrepreneurs take their boat out of the area, Padangbai people will lose their jobs,” he said. Before determining the amount of levies, Aris Suyasa said that district government should learn from the cases of diving tourism in Menjangan Island. Due to increasing admission ticket to IDR 300,000 per tourist, the owners of dive shop had boycotted the dive tourism in the area. “Even if there is a levy, district government should build adequate facilities in the area. We in Padangbai still have difficulty to get water,” he said. A representative of the fast boat businessmen, Made Wijaya, admitted to be surprised with such levy plan. He is also concerned with the

legal standing of the levy collection because it will only be regulated through regent regulation. “Indeed, the levy will be paid by service user, but there is possibility to be complained. Having paid the ticket, why should there be another charge?” he said. Besides, the other burdensome thing is the existence of levy plans ranging from IDR 30,000 to IDR 300,000 to cafes, restaurants, inns and stalls in Padangbai. “This is indeed just a draft and will be collected by the governing body. If applied, it will definitely have an impact,” he explained. In the meantime, the government of Karangasem has desire to manage the Padangbai traditional harbor for many reasons. In addition to security risk considerations, so far the potential of crossing activities to Gili Trawangan practically do not contribute to the region. There is only a levy of IDR 10,000 which is fully managed by Padangbai customary village. Head of the Karangasem transportation agency who is also the secretary of the Padangbai traditional harbor governing body said the management plan through cooperation system is intended for the welfare of Padangbai community in particular, and Karangasem in general. Of the amount worth IDR 100,000 planned levy, as much as IDR 10,000 will be allocated for insurance of the service user and IDR 10,000 for promotion of the SME products. Ten percent of the remaining IDR 80,000 is allocated for the promotion of Padangbai area and 20 percent for maintenance of the area. Furthermore, after deducted with operating costs of the management, the rest of the levy will be divided by customary village and local government treasury. Regardless of that, the decision to establish a governing body with its planning gets criticism from the parliament. The parliament even regretted it because the establishment of the governing body was without coordination with the parliament. “We are sorry we just knew this from you now. Nevertheless, this aspiration must be followed up,” said Chairman of the Karangasem House of Representatives, I Nengah Sumardi. Based on the proposal of the legislators, Sumardi immediately ordered the secretariat of the parliament to summon relevant agencies including the governing body for the hearing. Valentino headlines first day of Paris Fashion Week menswear PARIS — Heat was in the air on the first day of Paris Fashion Week menswear collections that showcased next year’s spring-summer designs. With the French capital baking in high temperatures, Wednesday kicked off 52 catwalk shows that will run over five runwaystomping days. Here are some of the highlights. VALENTINO’S ETHNIC SPORTWEAR

There were almost enough professional basketball stars to form a Valentino team at the house’s menswear spectacle. Serge Ibaka of the Toronto Raptors, the Chicago Bulls’ Dwayne Wade, Carmelo Anthony of the New York Knicks and the Houston Rockets’ James Harden all were on hand. Perhaps the Rome-based house had sports in mind when compiling the guest list for the thoughtful collection by designer Pierpaolo Piccioli that put ethnic twists on sportswear. Sneakers with thick North African-style threading were imagined in a multicolored palette below a silken green tracksuit with thick white Balkan-style seams. It was a study in contrasts. Voluminous sport coats that riffed on biker styles had subtly contradictory embroidery across the shoulders and, in a highly stylish touch, embroidered belts dangled from the waist. Layered white shirts were given a twist with round collars and khaki-style baggy pants were tapered in the Arab style. Valentino’s designs have become more focused since Piccioli started designing solo a few seasons ago. Wednesday’s collection was one of his best yet.

BANGLI — The cases of escaping inmates occurred again in Bali. The latest case is the escaping detainees and foreign inmates from Kerobokan prison, Badung, on Monday (Jun. 20). Such incident makes the officers of the Bangli detention house perform consolidation measures against all the detainees and inmates in the detention house. Such a measure is done to prevent similar cases from occurring again in Bangli detention house. Chief of Bangli Detention House, Diding Alpian, said on Tuesday (Jun. 20) that based on the orders from the regional office specifically from the head of correctional division, his office is appealed to make consolidation measure against all the detainees and inmates by making a regular search, investigate the building structures and provide guidance to security officers so as to increase security protection in detention house area. “We have been carrying out searches in all the rooms of detainees and inmates from the morning. So, every visit to detainees and inmates can be more optimized. This measure is taken to make alert considering it is the moment of Lebaran holiday. We do not want the escaping cases of detainees and inmates from happening in our detention house,” said Diding Alpian. Didin Alpian said that his office also has to check the condition of existing buildings immediately. Condition of the buildings after the earthquake not long ago has been reported. Some buildings are in cracked condition due to the earthquake, so they are prone to collapse. Moreover, when the public works agency checked the condition of the building, it is said that 75 percent of them are in damaged condition. This condition has been reported to the leadership. Now, it is still waiting for further

development to repair the building. “In terms of building structure, there are some weak points of soil texture because some soils have degradation condition. With this condition, it is possible for detainees to flee. Based on experience of 2014, there were detainees escaping due to weak supervision to building structure. At that time, the detainees were not detected when making a tunnel to escape. So, the experience strengthens us to ensure better security to avoid such incident from happening again,” he said. He explained that other than checking and searching in every detention room, his officers also conducts regular surveillance in every activity carried out by detainees and inmates. If there are prisoners saying prayers and so on they are still being monitored from above. Moreover, the number of security personnel owned this time remains very limited. Under these conditions, the office maximizes the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) to monitor every activity carried out by detainees. “Actually we have nine security guards. But, now we have only five one, so the use of CCTV can help strengthen the supervision,” he said. DENPASAR — Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, realized the chaos in the new student admission (PPDB) for the academic year 2017/2018. It primarily happened regarding the local area track as one of the four tracks. The admission itself refers to Regulation of Minister of Education and Culture No.17/2017. “It indeed becomes a problem. Probably, it should be reviewed whether it should be like that,” he said in Denpasar on Wednesday (Jun. 21). Pastika added that it is not necessary to maintain the new pattern admission if only makes chaos. As the implementation of five-day school policy plan that once made chaos, in the end it is also postponed. “In fact, it resulted in chaos. So, why we should implement it? We must be flexible and it’s a pity on people wishing to go to school. We’re going to pursue the 12-year compulsory education. If people are going to attend school but they are not able to, whose fault is this?” he added. According to Pastika, regulations must not be blamed on. However, it should be resolved wisely and made it flexible. “The regulation can be applied wisely and flexibly, but may not be insisting,” he explained. To resolve the problem of the new student admission, Pastika agreed to implement a double shift school. Moreover, the president has delayed the five-day school policy. However, the double shifts are limited to schools located in densely populated areas. The increasing burden of teachers will be overcome by recruiting qualified contract teachers. “We’ll pay the contract teachers. As having no other option, we must allocate a budget for the contract teacher if double shift will be applied. (kmb32)

MANGUPURA — The potential of Japanese tourists to travel to Bali stays very high. However, to bring back tourists from this country requires continuous promotion by stakeholders and travel agencies. This was stated by the Head of the Bali Tourism Office, Anak Agung Gede Juniarta Putra. He was optimistic that Japanese tourists visit to Bali Island will continue to increase along with Japan Airlines flight that re-open services to Bali. “We are optimistic that Japanese tourists will return to Bali because Japan Airlines (JAL) will fly again to Indonesia, especially to Bali,” he said accompanied by Subdivision Head of Culinary Festival and Music, Deputy of Overseas Tourism Marketing Development, Ministry of Tourism, Titik Lestari, when welcoming Japanese tourists at Ngurah Rai Airport on Tuesday night (Jun. 20). Although Japan Airline flies to Bali in a charter flight, he hoped in the future JAL can open its flight service on a regular basis. “We expect JAL to re-open its services on a regular basis as ever before. The reopening of Japan Airlines direct flights from Narita to Denpasar is good news for the world of tourism in Indonesia, especially Bali. All this time, direct flight service from Japan to Indonesia is served by Garuda Indonesia which flies from

Narita and Haneda to Jakarta and Denpasar. In the meantime, Japan’s national airlines like All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Japan Airlines only serves flight services to Jakarta. Previously, Japan Airlines had opened a direct flight to Japan with 400 tourist passengers per day. However, the flight was discontinued on September 30, 2010 due to internal factors of the company. “Even though it is only charter flight, this is a good opportunity to bring in Japanese tourists to Indonesia,” said Deputy Assistant of Asia-Pacific Market Development, Ministry of Tourism, Vinsensius Jemadu. Abused children find Japan’s shelters provide little comfort

TOKYO - Every year, more than 20,000 abused, delinquent, developmentally challenged or otherwise troubled Japanese children needing emergency housing pass through a system of shelters. But the conditions inside many of them are so regimented that the children can find the experience harrowing, according to interviews with more than a dozen people who have stayed or worked in the facilities, as well as child psychology experts familiar with the system. The concerns have prompted government officials to suggest that reform is needed, though there is no indication of when that will occur. Government-sponsored committees aimed at improving child welfare policies have been established, and changes to the centres will be on their agenda. “No one thinks it’s okay to keep these shelters exactly the way they are,” said Yu Hamada, an official at the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. “There hasn’t been any discussion to date as to how exactly they should function, and that’s what we’re working on.” Originally set up after World War Two to provide food and shelter for wandering orphans and petty juvenile criminals, Japan’s 136 shelters haven’t evolved much in the past 70 years, experts say. The children, who can be any

age between 1 and 17, are usually kept indoors and away from school so that they can’t run off or abusing parents can’t grab them. In many of the shelters, workers with little training impose strict rules and schedules, don’t allow cell phones or toys from home, and make isolation a common punishment for misbehaving, the sources said. Stricter shelters don’t allow chatting during meals or even making eye contact with other kids, the people with knowledge of the conditions said. The shelters vary in age, size and quality. Some have gymnasiums or playgrounds and are well-stocked with DVDs and comic books; others are run-down with peeling wallpaper and old tatami mats, sleeping 10 to a room, these people said. They are administered by child guidance centres that are part of the local prefectural and municipal governments, and have gone largely unsupervised by the central government. They are funded with local and central government money. Despite its child-friendly image, Japan lags other advanced economies when it comes to protecting

the rights of its youth in official care. A fundamental problem is a dearth of foster parents, which means a greater percentage of kids end up in some kind of group care facility than in other developed countries. Acknowledging problems in the system, Japan last year revised its child welfare law to spell out that children have rights, though those are not fully enforced by welfare workers, the experts say. “These shelters should be a place for children to get the care they need,” said Yukiko Yamawaki, a psychotherapist who worked with children under care for the city of Tokyo for nearly two decades until 2015 and often visited the facilities. “But the attitude is, ‘You’re lucky you have a place to sleep and you’re not getting killed.’ They don’t see their jobs as providing comfort and care.” Defenders of the system say tight discipline is needed as the children come from a wide range of backgrounds and needs, and without firm control chaos would reign. “It’s communal living so we do have to set some rules,” said Chikako Yoshikawa, who oversees a shelter in Tokyo. “With a limited number of workers caring for lots of children, a certain level of control is inevitable to prevent accidents.” (rtr)

PARIS - French President Emmanuel Macron put a group of relative unknowns, some from outside politics, into ministerial roles on Wednesday to replace those that left under a cloud just weeks into his tenure. The new appointments came as France’s main conservative party splintered under the impact of Macron’s sudden rise to presidential and parliamentary power, and the seismic shift it has caused continues to reverberate around French politics. Businesswoman Florence Parly, who worked previously in a Socialist government and for major French transport companies, was named defence minister, and law expert Nicole Belloubet was nominated justice minister, replacing two of the departed. Jacques Mezard moved from the Agriculture Ministry to the territorial planning ministry vacated by Macron’s right-hand man Richard Ferrand earlier this week. Macron loyalist Stephane Travert took over the agriculture portfolio. Macron’s reshuffle, tapping more people from the non-political world, reflects the profile of many of his newly elected members of parliament. It also keeps a fragile balance of people from left, right and centre and has one more women than men. The reshuffle came after a group of ministers from an affiliated centrist party, MoDem, resigned over allegations the party misused European parliamentary funds. Those who departed the justice and defence ministries were, respectively, Francois Bayrou, MoDem party leader, and Sylvie Goulard - who had been seen as a key plank of Macron’s plan for closer ties with Germany. Bayrou, a Macron ally since endorsing his centrist bid for the presidency in February, said he quit to protect the government from the scandal that has engulfed him. “I will stand by the president and faithfully support him with a political and personal understanding that is dear to me,” Bayrou told journalists. UNDER INVESTIGATION His centre-right party is embroiled in a judicial probe into claims it misused EU parliamentary funds, and its importance as a Macron ally waned after his Republic on the Move (LREM) party won a big majority in Sunday’s parliamentary election. The majority is so large that Macron does not need MoDem to get planned pro-business labour reforms through parliament. Stock markets stumble as oil languishes near lows

LONDON - European stock markets fell for a third straight day on Thursday, as battered oil prices hovered near seven-month lows hit overnight on worries about a supply glut and falling demand. Britain’s FTSE 100, Germany’s DAX and France’s CAC 40 all slipped 0.3-0.4 percent as trading in Europe got under way. U.S. stock futures were also a touch weaker . Sharp falls in oil prices this week have hurt energy stocks and dampened investors’ expectations for higher inflation that would pave the way for tighter monetary policies among major central banks. “As far as the market mentality is concerned, as long as the oil price keeps weakening, this is going to tell us something about the underlying capacity of the global economy to generate inflation on a sustained basis,” said Chris Scicluna, head of economic research at Daiwa Capital Markets. In Asia, MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan climbed 0.6 percent. But Japan’s Nikkei ended a touch lower as a stronger yen and a plunge in the shares of auto air bag-maker Takata Corp took a toll on sentiment. Excitement after MSCI included mainland Chinese shares in its emerging market indexes this week further boosted China’s stock market, driving the blue-chip CSI300 index to the highest level in 1-1/2 years. Oil prices were subdued as investors’ doubts that OPEC-led output cuts would dent a three-year glut offset data showing a drop in U.S. inventories. “The time for contrarian trades in oil is fast approaching, but I would want to see some stability in price and the technicals start to become more convincing,” said Chris Weston, chief market strategist at IG in Melbourne. U.S. crude futures were a touch weaker at $42.50 a barrel. They closed down 1.6 percent on Wednesday after touching their lowest level since August. Global benchmark Brent was also a tad softer at around $44.78 and within striking distance of seven-month lows hit on Wednesday. Since peaking in late February, crude has dropped around 20 percent, with only brief rallies, completely erasing gains at the end of the year in the wake of the initial OPEC-led production cut. Subdued inflation and concerns about the outlook for world growth at a time when the U.S. Federal Reserve is raising interest rates have triggered a flattening in bond yield curves. The gap between yields on U.S. five-year notes and 30-year bonds flattened to 95 basis points, holding near its narrowest since December 2007. A flattening yield curve is often viewed as a negative economic indicator as it shows concerns about the future pace of growth and inflation, because buyers of long-dated debt would demand higher yields if they expected higher costs. In currency markets, the New Zealand dollar gained 0.5 percent to $0.7257 after the central bank held official cash rates at record lows but sounded less dovish than bears in the market had wagered on. Egypt’s Sisi hikes social spending to ease austerity pain

CAIRO - Egypt’s budget for the next 12 months will include a 75 billion Egyptian pound ($4.17 billion) social spending package, the finance ministry said on Wednesday, a day after President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced measures to ease the pain of austerity for low-income Egyptians. Sisi is under pressure to balance IMF-austerity reforms to fix Egypt’s economy while limiting the financial impact on poorer Egyptians who are key to re-electing him for a second term in next year’s presidential election. “The social package, which will benefit more than 90 percent of citizens will, as announced by the president, include an increase in monthly food subsidies,” a finance ministry statement said. Sisi on Tuesday announced a raft of new spending, including more than doubling monthly food subsidies effective starting July 1, a freeze to taxes on agricultural lands, and an increase of 15 percent in civil servant pensions. The lion’s share of the social spending allocation will be channeled into monthly food subsidies, which will increase to 50 pounds per person from 21 currently, a hike that will cost the state an additional 38 billion pounds in the coming fiscal year’s budget, which begins in July. The social package aims to compensate Egyptians battered by inflation that hit a three-decade high after the central bank floated the pound currency in November as part of a $12 billion International Monetary Fund lending programme. Since the flotation, Egypt has seen its pound’s value fall by half and inflation

exceed 30 percent. With the goal of putting Egypt’s economy back on track after years of turmoil drove foreign investors and tourists away, the three-year IMF programme also includes higher taxes and energy subsidy cuts. The government aims to maintain a previously announced budget deficit target of 9.1 percent despite the introduction of the new social package, the finance ministry said. MOST VULNERABLE Economists said the social package is in line with the IMF deal which they expected would hit the country’s poorest. “We knew the reforms would put pressure on vulnerable groups, and compensating them was always part of the IMF deal,” said Mohamed Abu Basha, EFG Hermes economist. Reham El-Dessouki, an economist at Arqam Capital, said the social package could have a positive effect as it may prevent a decline in economic growth that is dependent on spending power.

“It also prevents the undermining of social and political support for the economic reform programme by providing support for low- and middle-income Egyptians in the first year or two of the programme, which are the most difficult,” Dessouki said. Sisi had promised to protect the country’s poorest from the outcome of economic reforms necessary to secure the IMF programme, but analysts say his popularity has suffered in recent months as prices soared. This year, Sisi has often praised Egyptians for coping with austerity measures and promised the outlook will improve, constantly touting financial figures in his speeches to show an improving economy. “Our foreign reserves have increased by unprecedented rates,” Sisi said in a speech on Wednesday. “This is only the beginning ... our increasing monetary reserves, exports and local production - all indicators that calm our hearts and assure us that we’re on the right path.”(rtr)

Kober with Hanuman Figure, Based on Story of Arjuna Pramada Ritual paraphernalia like kober (flags) are used as symbols of greatness and have philosophical meaning related to the power of the gods. Thus, it is common to find such objects bineng used in the the Hindu rituals of the Balinese community – especially in temples. The scale of these ritual objects is pursuant to the scale of the ritual being held. The use of flag or kober with the figure of Hanuman is frequently identified as a symbol of strength. Hanuman is a character in the Ramayana epic, often told in the form of a puppet show in Bali. According to mythology, Hanuman is son of Lord Bayu known as Maruti, he is not worshipped as a god. As Prof. Dr. I Made Bandem explains, Hanuman appears in the story Arjuna Pramada or Arjuna Pradalba. When Rama and Laksmana were leading their troops to build a bridge to Lanka, Arjuna came with Krishna. At that time, Rama-Laksmana and Krishna-Arjuna shared physical resemblances. Because the scene in this part of the story was crowded with many people the two pairs got mixed up so that Arjuna was with Rama and made the mistkae of saying that he could constuct a brigde from India to Lanka that was more robust than the one that Rama had made with his monkey army. Arjuna was asked to prove his words and he drew his arrow from

South India to Lanka in order to crete the bridge. Since Rama was still in doubt about the strength of the bridge, Hanuman in the form of a little monkey tried to walk across the bridge, but as he walked, he grew in size. By the time he arrived to the middle of the bridge, the structure collapsed under his weight. “This story goes beyond the standard patterns of the story that tells of the meeting of the the Ramayana Story with the story of the Mahabharata. Although this story is classified as the creation of puppeteers, it is said to have been narrated in a palm-leaf manuscript”, explained Prof. Bandem. As the story goes, Arjuna then kept his oath to worship Hanuman for his success. However, Hanuman could not stand to be worshiped by Arjuna so he finally apologized for having dared to dabble with a deity (pramada). With this apology he also promised to help Arjuna when needed. Arjuna took the initiative to make a flag with the figure of Hanuman that

also symbolizes Lord Vayu which was then installed on his chariot. From this story was born the tradition of putting up these kober flags at temple. There is also another version of this story , said Dr. I Gusti Made Ngurah, which begins with Arjuna accompanied by Krishna who was send by Yudhishthira to the former kingdom of Lanka to look for a refferences that could for a symbol when carrying out a ritual. On the way, Arjuna and Krishna encountered a little monkey on a bridge. Arjuna was arrogant and insulted the little monkey. The little monkey answered that he was actually Hanuman and challenged Arjuna to try to destroy the bridge. Arjuna failed to meet this challenge. Arjuna was tested several times by the monkey but always failed. Finally the little monkey revealed his identity as Hanuman son of Lord Vayu. Hanuman said that he would respect Arjuna because he is a human but that Arjuna should also respect Hanuman as he is son of Lord Vayu and in this way there would be mutual respect. “Finally, Hanuman requested that Arjuna to create a flag that depicting Hanuman. This flag was then taken everywhere. The flag with the image of Hanuman ths became a symbol of Arjuna honoring Hanuman”, said Prof. Bandem.(kmb)

Saudi king empowers young reformer son in succession shake-up

DUBAI - Saudi Arabia’s King Salman made his son next in line to the throne on Wednesday, handing the 31-year-old sweeping powers as the kingdom seeks a radical overhaul of its oil-dependent economy and faces mounting tensions with regional rival Iran.

Although Mohammed bin Salman’s promotion to crown prince had long been expected among those who follow the royal family closely, the timing was a surprise and puts the kingdom’s future in relatively untested hands. Mohammed bin Salman replaces his cousin, Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, a veteran security chief who led the Saudi campaign against Islamic State and al Qaeda, at a time when Riyadh faces tensions with Qatar and Iran and is locked into a war in Yemen. His appointment may make Saudi policy more hawkish against arch-rival Iran and other Gulf rivals such as Qatar, increasing volatility in an already unstable region, analysts said. “Under his watch, Saudi Arabia has developed aggressive foreign policies (Yemen, Qatar) and he has not been shy about making strong statements against Iran,” said Olivier Jakob at Switzerland-based oil consultancy Petromatrix. “It is not really a question of if, but rather of when, a new escalation with Iran starts.” U.S. President Donald Trump, who last month made Saudi Arabia his first foreign stop since his election, telephoned Mohammed bin Salman to congratulate him on his promotion.

“The two leaders discussed the priority of cutting off all support for terrorists and extremists, as well as how to resolve the ongoing dispute with Qatar,” the White House said in a statement, adding they also discussed efforts to achieve a lasting peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians. Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani congratulated Prince Mohammed, in a conciliatory gesture to Riyadh after it joined other Arab states in imposing sanctions on Qatar over its alleged support for terrorism. “His Highness (Sheikh Tamim) wished him success ... for the good of the kingdom under the wise leadership of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques,” Sheikh Tamim said in a message to Prince Mohammed, Qatar state news agency QNA reported. British Prime Minister Theresa May also welcomed Prince Mohammed’s appointment. Iran, Saudi Arabia’s main rival for regional influence, called Prince Mohammed’s appointment a “soft coup”. Its leadership was critical of comments he made last month that the “battle” should be taken into Iran, with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei labelling Saudi leaders as “idiots”. Iran, which is predominantly Shi’ite Muslim, and Saudi Arabia, which is mostly Sunni, compete for power and influence across the region. Indonesian Islamic sect say they’re “denied state IDs” over their beliefs

JAKARTA - Members of an Indonesian Islamic sect have issued a complaint that their human rights were breached by a local government refusing to issue them state ID cards unless they renounce their belief, a rights group said on Wednesday. The Ahmadiyah identify themselves as Muslims, but believe another prophet followed the Prophet Mohammed, who founded Islam. Many mainstream Muslims and hardline groups accuse the sect and other Muslim minorities of apostasy. A mob of 1,000 people beat to death three Ahmadis in an unprovoked attack in a village in Banten province, west of Jakarta, in 2011 and activists say the group continues to face discrimination. Indonesia’s reputation for tolerance has come under renewed scrutiny since Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, a Christian, was sentenced last month to two years in prison for blasphemy in a trial that came after mass Islamist-led rallies and raised religious tensions to the highest in years. Sixteen people from the village of Manislor in West Java, representing 1,400 members of the sect, told the ombudsman on Tuesday that their lives had been damaged by not having IDs for five years, said Syamsul Alam Agus, executive secretary of One Justice Foundation, a nonprofit organization. Some were unable to register their marriages, Agus said, adding in one case an Ahmadi was refused treatment at a hospital because of a lack of ID. According to Agus, in order to obtain ID documents, Ahmadis had to sign a form stating they were Muslims while reading the Shahada, an Islamic creed declaring belief in the oneness of God and Muhammad as God’s prophet. “Not giving an electronic ID card to Manislor’s Ahmadiyah followers is not only a violation of human rights, but also breaking the law,” Agus said. Indonesia requires a person to state their religion on official ID cards. The ombudsman felt there had been maladministration at

the local Kuningan government where Manislor is located, but had not formally issued any recommendation, said Ahmad Su’adi, an ombudsman official, adding that “the state cannot force people” to denounce or join a religion. The Kuningan government could not be reached for comment on Wednesday, but in a June 2016 post on its website, the head of the Kuningan regency, Acep Purnama, defended its refusal to hand out identity documents to followers of Ahmadiyah and an animist belief, Sunda Wiwitan. “We are not discriminating or being intolerant... is an issue of principle that has to be resolved together and must be accepted by all Kuningan people. This isn’t about majority or minority,” he was quoted as saying. LONDON - The day when Formula One fans can race virtually with real drivers in live grands prix may not be so far off as the sport looks to develop the digital dimension. Mehul Kapadia, one of those who helps make things happen as head of Formula One business at official “connectivity partner” Tata Communications, is eager to step on the accelerator. “While Formula One gets criticized for being late on the digital journey, a lot has been happening,” he told Reuters in an interview. The conversations which are now happening are far more ‘Let’s get it done’.” It was not always that way. Liberty Media, the U.S. firm that completed a takeover of the sport in January, immediately identified digital as an area ripe for development as it seeks to tap lucrative new revenue streams and give fans more of an experience. Its chief executive Greg Maffei said last September that less than one percent of revenues were from digital and that there was a huge amount of video feed and data about the races that were being captured but not processed incrementally for the dedicated fan. Formula One’s chief technical officer John Morrison said at the same time, at the awarding of Tata’s F1 connectivity prize in Austin, Texas, that the sport was about two years away from fans being able to race virtually in a real race. The main problem, he explained then, was getting the accuracy of GPS positioning down to about 10mm from the current 200mm. China to levy 100% tax on overseas football transfers BEIJING — China will effectively double the cost of its clubs buying foreign football players in a move aimed at slowing the influx of pricey overseas stars and encouraging homegrown talent. China’s Football Association announced that any club that pays more than $6.63 million for a

player transfer must pay the same amount to a CFA youth development fund. The tax will be in place until the end of the Chinese league’s summer transfer window on July 14. Flush with cash from corporate backers, Chinese Super League clubs have shaken up international

football in recent years by offering astronomical transfer fees and wages for players from European teams. The new policy could potentially derail mooted deals from Chinese clubs to acquire English Premier League stars such as Wayne Rooney and Diego Costa. (ap)

FIFA opens case against Juventus over Paul Pogba transfer

ZURICH — FIFA opened a disciplinary case against Juventus after investigating the Italian champion’s world-record sale of Paul Pogba to Manchester United. FIFA said “no disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Manchester United,” in a deal valued at 105 million euros (then $116 million) last August. The charges against Juventus were not specified but likely relate to third-party ownership rules. “It was a transfer involving very big numbers, so it’s normal that there’s an investigation,” Juventus CEO and general manager Giuseppe Marotta said Wednesday.

“We acted in full respect of the fiscal and tax rules. We responded to the questions that FIFA presented to us and we’re confident that there will not be any disciplinary punishment.” Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola reportedly was paid by both clubs and also on behalf of his client, and earned up to 50 million euros ($55 million) in the deal. FIFA’s ban on investors owning players’ transfer rights took effect in May 2015. The case is potentially embarrassing for Juventus president Andrea Agnelli, now a member of the executive committee of UEFA which pushed FIFA to ban third-party ownership.

SOCHI - Mexico scored twice in a busy second-half performance to overcome New Zealand 2-1 on Wednesday and destroy the All Whites dreams of securing their first Confederations Cup victory at the 11th attempt. New Zealand had not won any of their previous matches at three Confederations Cups dating back to 1999 but they had the better of the first half and went in 1-0 up thanks to a nice goal from Chris Wood. However, Mexico came out reorganised for the second half and Raul Jimenez got an equaliser nine minutes into the second period. Javier Aquino dribbled in from the left and after an exchange of passes on the edge of the New Zealand box, Jimenez spun to fire high into the net. Mexico took control of the game and Oribe Peralta grabbed the winner from close range after 72 minutes when he swept home another incisive cross from man of

the match Aquino. Both teams had chances to add to their totals in what was a pulsating second period. Juergen Damm missed at least two golden opportunities for Mexico to extend their lead, while at the other end Ryan Thomas was unlucky to see a lovely curling shot rebound off the bar. Tommy Smith saved a Jimenez shot off the line two minutes from time. “There wasn’t a lot in it tonight, it was very close,” New Zealand coach Anthony Hudson said. “If we had been more clinical in front of goal we’d have a point. Overall I am really proud and I am really disappointed, our players deserved more.” Mexico ended the day as Group A leaders with four points, ahead of Portugal on goal average. Hosts Russia are in third with three points and New Zealand have none. Mexico play Russia and Portugal face New Zealand on Saturday. (rtr)
