LOS ANGELES - Barack and Michelle Obama have entered into a multi-year agreement to produce films and series with Netflix, the world’s leading internet entertainment service announced on Monday. The former first couple have launched Higher Ground Productions to produce a variety of content for the video streamer, possibly including scripted series, documentaries and features. “One of the simple joys of our time in public service was getting to meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life, and to help them share their experiences with a wider audience,” Obama, who served two terms in the White House from 2009, said in a statement. “That’s why Michelle and I are so excited to partner with Netflix. We hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the entire world.” The Obamas already have a large social media presence -- a combined 150 million followers on Twitter and Instagram -- but the deal will see their influence boosted significantly by Netflix’s 125 million subscribers in 190
countries. “Barack and Michelle Obama are among the world’s most respected and highly-recognized public figures and are uniquely positioned to discover and highlight stories of people who make a difference in their communities and strive to change the world for the better,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos. NEW YORK - In the wildly popular “Star Wars” films, Han Solo once told a lightsaber-wielding Luke Skywalker: “Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid.” Now, fans of the space saga can own one of the blaster pistol props Harrison Ford used in his iconic role as Solo in “Return of the Jedi” -- an item expected to sell for between $300,000 and $500,000 next month at auction in Las Vegas. The faux weapon, mainly made
of wood, was put on display in New York on Monday by Julien’s Auctions -- after more than 30 years tucked away in the belongings of James Schoppe, the art director for “Return of the Jedi” (1983). Martin Nolan, the auction house’s executive director, said Schoppe, an Oscar nominee for his work on the film, finally decided to part with Solo’s gun and about 40 other ‘Jedi’ items, including an Ewok axe and plans for Jabba the Hutt’s ship. The price for Solo’s blaster “could go much higher” at the auc-
tion, set for June 23 in Las Vegas, Nolan said. The announcement of the auction coincides with the release this week of “Solo: A Star Wars Story” -- a standalone film that tells the story of a young Han Solo, this time played by Alden Ehrenreich. Foreign media head to N. Korea to see nuclear site destruction
Foreign journalists headed to North Korea on Tuesday to watch the promised destruction of its nuclear test site, a move seen as a goodwill gesture before a planned summit with the United States. Reporters from China, the US and Russia departed on a charter flight from Beijing, according to Chinese state broadcaster CGTN which is part of the contingent.
The group will cover the demolition of the Punggye-ri nuclear testing site inside a mountain in the northeast of the country, which is scheduled to take place between Wednesday to Friday, depending on the weather. Agence France-Presse is one of a number of major media organisations not invited to cover the event. Pyongyang announced earlier this month that it planned to “completely” destroy the facility by blowing up the test site’s access tunnels, a move welcomed by Washington and Seoul. One of the challenges facing craft entrepreneurs is the increasingly fierce competition with other countries –especially China. Chinese products are cheaper and are in great demand on international markets. We need to work together to address these issues. Bali is famous for the high quality of its handicraft products, but as a result prices here are higher and the demand seems to have decreases. As a Balinese handicrafts are have a competitive disadvantage. All stakeholders are therefor being invited to increase the bargaining power of Balinese craft products though innovation. Artisans need to be more creative in design and use information technology for
marketing their goods. The role of government is also necessary. As arsana explained, studies about the problmes facing craft entrepreneurs and artisans as well as solutions have been presented to the government, however little action has been taken. “Solutions need to be implemeted as soon as possible”, he added The government should assist this labour intensive sector in overcoming this downturn. Handycraft home industries can help the govenrment in overcoming unmenployment more quickly. Also the export of craft products ring in foreing exchange eranings which also helps the national economy. Elegans] is of no economic importance to man.” 1 Well, they had no economic importance until now. Scientists have studied how the neurons in the C. elegans interact with each other and programmed them onto a computer chip that now lives inside of a robot. 2 Could this decade-long process of tracking every connection made in the brain of this worm end up giving us a better understanding of our own brains? SeaBubbles is a battery-powered boat with a hydrofoil design, which enables lower drag
and greater speeds by lifting the hull of a boat over the water. It also gives you the feeling of hovering over the water, which is pretty cool and can reduce seasickness. The vehicle is powered by a 20 kWh battery pack that feeds two

Rising interst in reading amongst people of Jembrana
NEGARA - Jembrana’s Regional Public Library has been seen a rise in the public;s interest in reading. interest in reading. “Previously there were only about 20 visitors a day, but now that number is about to about 50”, said Head of the Jembrana Library and Archive Agency, Ida Ayu Made Dharma Yanti Putra, accompanied by the Division Head of the Jembrana Public Relations and Protocol, Komang Suparta, on Monday (May 21) . The Library and Archive Agency has been taking steps to encourage young children and adults alike to read and it seems to be working as students and other readers often come to the library after work or school. “Sometimes parents bring their children to play in the playground located behind the cultural center and then come to the library to read”, explained Dharma Yanti. The library that is located on the ground floor of the cultural center started providing free internet access, ari conditioning and cleaned made the whole atmosphere generally more inviting to entice more people to use the facilities. Many housewives have also started coming to the library to consult cook books, take part in majejahitan or making offerings and use the internet facilities to promote their home businesses. “We also provide computer and internet lessons”, said Dharma Yanti. As of 2017, the library has a collection of 10,517 titles and a total of 27,070 books that cover a wide range of subjects from phi-
losophy, religion, social sciences, language, pure science, therapeutics, arts, fiction, geography and history. The library also holds storytelling events for elementary school students, chanting of pupuh pangkur competition for junior high school students and and poetry reading competitions in Balinese language for high school students. Dharma Yanti added that the library also has two mobile library vans that visit schools and villages. “The library van is a way to introduce schools and villages to the library, but we also invite people to come directly to the library that is open from 07:3019:00”, she explained. The Jembrana Public Library however does face some obstacles including lack of librarians, Currently they only have one and so far have no archivist. “Four people have been provided with training and they are currently waiting to for the decree of appointment to start working”, added Yanti. DENPASAR - A citizen of the United States, defendant Keita Stevenson Lovelace, 45, was convicted and sentenced to 1.5 years in prison on Monday (May 21). During the trial at the Denpasar District Court, the man who works as a fashion designer was found guilty of misusing narcotics (delta 9 Tetrahydrocannabinol) that were found hidden in 20 cartridges / vials containing yellow liquid with an overall weight of 336.6 grams gross or 0.4 ml or 0.4 gram net. Responding to the verdict, the defendant through his legal advisor team, Mila Tayeb et al.,
immediately accepted the verdict that was lesser that the prosecutor’s charges. Previously, public prosecutor Suhadi and Martinus had asked for a sentence of two years. In their letters of the suit, the defendant Keita Stevenson Lovelace was declared legally and convincingly guilty of committing the crime of class I drug abuse, as in the third alternative allegation. Ayu Bakery produces thousands of cakes each day
DENPASAR - It can be imagined that a home industry can produce thousands or even tens of thousands of cakes each day. It only involves 13 employees working in production. This is done by Ayu Bakery owned by I Made Suarsa, a native to Kedonganan.
When met at one of the cafés at Kedonganan recently, Suarsa said he can produce thousands of cakes per day. For such number, he spends seven sacks of flour (1 sack = 25kg). So, from the seven sacks of flour, he can produce thousands of cakes. A total of 13 employees are working in producing the cakes. Due to large number of orders, the production of cakes is made into two shifts. Morning shift lasts from 07:00 – 15:00 and the afternoon shift from 15:00 – 23:00. Before the eruption of Mount Agung, there were three shifts in the production. So, his kitchen was busy making cakes for 24 hours. Many types of cakes he can produce such as croissant, Danish pastry, wet cake, bread, muffins, sponge and special order like birthday cake. “Every day we mostly produce croissant and Danish pastry,” he added. Thousands of the cakes are supplied to hotels, all the cafés along the beach of Kedonganan as well as his small shop and retailers. Currently, he has worked with 80 hotels to supply cakes. To hotels, he only supplies some kinds of cake. However, he also supplies all kinds of cakes to particular customers. Meanwhile, all the cafés at Kedonganan having a birthday package or wedding party, the cake needs are supplied by Ayu Bakery. “Several restaurants offering

He is indeed a chef getting formal education in educational institutions. However, the skill of cooking becoming his basic is hot kitchen started from Sari Asian food,
Chinese food and Continental food. Eight years before deciding to retire young from hotel, he had served in the pastry and bakery section. From this position, he got the cooking skills. Due to encouragement of his wife, in 2008 he began to open a cake-making business. He still remembered the first gas stove he bought to start the baking business. “My wife has an idea at that time because knowing her husband is good at making cookies. Right on Tumpek Landep we started trying to make the cakes. On the following day, we buy stove in the Badung Market along
with mixer. I made muffin and sponge. After that, we market them to traditional markets,” he said while recalling the beginning of his journey. Public response was positive and could accept the taste of the cake because he applied the hotel standard. “I made 100 pieces and sold out, made 500 pieces and sold out. And then we made 1,000 pieces and sold out as well. The most bubbling moment of the order was in a series of Nyepi celebration where all people come to my house. Five dead, dozens quarantined as virus fears spread in India NEW DELHI - A deadly virus carried by fruit bats has killed at least five people in southern India and more than 90 people are in quarantine, a top health official said Tuesday. Other deaths are suspected to have been caused by Nipah virus and authorities have ordered emergency measures to control the outbreak. “We can confirm that five people have died from the Nipah virus,” Kerala state health surveillance officer K.J. Reena told AFP. Media reports said 10 people had died but officials told AFP final tests had not been completed on other suspicious deaths. Nine people have been admitted to hospital with symptoms resembling the virus, which the World Health Organization says is fatal in 70 percent of cases, Reena added. One of the nine has tested positive for Nipah.
“We also traced 94 people who had come in contact with the ones who died and they have been quarantined as a precaution,” Reena added. There is no vaccination for Nipah, which has killed more than 260 people in Malaysia, Bangladesh and India in outbreaks since 1998. The WHO has named Nipah as one of the eight priority diseases that could cause an epidemic, alongside Ebola and Zika. The virus induces flu-like symptoms that lead to an agonising encephalitis and coma. Three members of the same family are among the fatalities. Uber taps into Japan with first taxi-hailing pilot Uber announced Tuesday it would start its first taxi-hailing pilot programme in Japan this summer, as it bids to break into a tough market in the world’s third largest economy. The US firm has found it difficult to penetrate the Japanese market, where risk averse passengers prefer to stick to their high quality traditional taxi service. Hailing a taxi rarely takes more than a few seconds in major Japanese cities and there has been a relatively sluggish uptake of services like Uber, where consumers order an unlicensed car via a smartphone app. But Uber said in a statement Tuesday it would launch a pilot
programme this summer to hook up tourists and residents in the western Awaji island with available taxi drivers. Uber said it aimed to provide local residents and tourists with “reliable and safe transportation” on the small island, which is home to just over 150,000 people. “I’m very excited that Uber’s technology will contribute to further enhancing the transit environment of Awaji Island,” Brooks Entwistle, Uber’s Chief Business Officer, said in the statement, adding it will be “the first initiative of its kind in Japan”. Uber is far from alone in targeting the Japanese taxi market, with Chinese ride-hailing giant Didi Chuxing and Japanese telecom firm SoftBank announcing
a deal in early February to develop a taxi app in Japan. SoftBank has heavily invested in the taxi market and recently took a 15 percent stake in Uber. And Sony has said it is planning a joint venture to offer artificial intelligence technology to six taxi operators, which currently own a total of 10,000 vehicles in Tokyo. The technology would use AI to predict demand for taxis and allow companies to more efficiently mobilise their resources. M&S had in November 2016 launched a five-year overhaul of its UK stores amid fierce competition from supermarkets and budget garment chain Primark -- as well as online giants like Amazon. The restructuring was accelerated last last year. “We are making good progress with our plans to reshape our store estate to be more relevant to our customers and support our online growth plans,” said Sacha Berendji, M&S retail, operations and property director. Some have even been modified with the accompaniment of bleganjur. “In total, there are seven hamlets at Kediri customary village that will take turns to go round from one hamlet to another hamlet existing is at our village,” he explained. Further, he said that tektekan tradition in the area of Kediri customary village is inherited from generation to generation. So far, there is no any record on the history of its origin. According to his ancestors, the tradition came together with the outbreaks in Kediri. “At that time, many residents were experiencing sickness to death and they also faced harvest failure because their paddy fields were attacked by pests,” he said.
Due to concerns over the calamity occurred at that time, community leaders and temple priests agreed to invoke guidance by praying at local Puseh Temple. At that time, they got a clue if the pandemic could be eliminated by means of sounds. Armed with this clue, the residents of Kediri came down and went around the village while playing tektekan for few days. Finally, it was proved that the plague attacking the customary village disappeared. Since then, the tektekan tradition has psychical function to dismiss plague. Its implementation cannot be predicted because it depends on the incidence of outbreak at the village. With the changing of time or more precisely from 2014 the tektekan tradition began to be transformed into an entertainment art. Moreover, local villagers agreed to hold this tradition as annual attraction coinciding with the Hindus celebrating Nyepi. During the execution of tektekan tradition at local customary village, the officials suggest road users to find alternative road section. “We’ve made coordination with police authority, especially on the security and traffic diversion,” he concluded. US to impose ‘strongest sanctions in history’ on Iran
WASHINGTON - US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday warned Tehran would be hit with the “strongest sanctions in history” and cautioned European firms against continuing to do business with it, toughening up Washington’s policy line after its withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal. In his first major foreign policy address since moving to the State Department from the CIA, the longtime Iran hawk and ardent opponent of the 2015 nuclear pact outlined an aggressive series of moves designed to counter Tehran, which he called the world’s top sponsor of terror. “We will apply unprecedented financial pressure on the Iranian regime. The leaders in Tehran will have no doubt about our seriousness,” Pompeo said in a speech at the conservative Heritage Foundation think tank. “This sting of sanctions will be painful if the regime does not change its course from the unacceptable and unproductive path it has chosen to one that rejoins the league of nations.”
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani quickly dismissed the threats, saying the rest of the world no longer accepts Washington making decisions on their behalf. “Who are you to decide for Iran and the world?” Rouhani said in a statement carried by multiple Iranian news agencies. “The world today does not accept that the United States decides for the world. Countries have their independence,” he added. Pompeo said if Iran were to abide by stricter terms, including ending its ballistic missile program and its interventions in regional conflicts from Yemen to Syria, the United States would lift its new sanctions.
President Donald Trump has long said the 2015 deal with Iran -- also signed by Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia -did not go far enough, and now wants the Europeans and others to support his hardline strategy. The deal was designed to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. The international community, including top US officials, have said Tehran had been in compliance. But Trump despised the deal, pointing to other aspects of Iranian behavior not covered in the pact, and on May 8 he pulled America out despite intense diplomatic lobbying by European allies who had beseeched him to stick with it by adding tougher new elements. PALEMBANG - The South Sumatra tourism office has intensified tourism promotion by participating in various Indonesian and overseas travel marts. The province took part in the Jogya International Travel Mart held on May 7-9, 2018, Irene Camelyn Sinaga, head of the tourism office, noted here, Tuesday. Various tourist destinations, such as the old Al Munawar kampong, were promoted during the travel mart, she stated. The Al Munawar kampong is an Arab quarter whose community has maintained its Islamic traditions and preserved its old houses. In the kampong, visitors can sample typical coffee of South Sumatra, including coffee served with a golden spoon, a specialty of the Al Munawar area. Palembang is a multi-ethnic city where Malays, Javanese, and those of Chinese and Arabic descent have lived harmoniously and peacefully for hundreds of years. It has the potential to develop religious, culinary, shopping, and historical tourism attractions. The little-known Al-Munawar kampong, with a vibrant Islamic environment and a distinctive culture, has been designated as a cultural reserve, based on local Law No. 5 of 1992. Located in Ulu 13, the Al-Munawar kampong is currently being developed into a religious tourism site. During the travel mart in Yogyakarta, South Sumatra also promoted the planned implementation of the 18th Asian Games to be co-hosted by Jakarta and Palembang from August 18 to September 2, 2018. Some 9.5 thousand athletes, 2.5 thousand personnel of the Asian Olympic Council, and 5.5 thousand technical delegates from 45 Asian countries will participate or be involved in the event. At least 3.5 thousand media representatives are expected to cover the games. This is the second time that Indonesia is hosting the Asian Games, the first one being held in Jakarta in 1962. Minister issues circular on fair flight fares PADANG - Transportation Minister, Budi Karya Sumadi, will issue a circular on fair air flight tariff for airlines in the face of religious holidays. “When I come back from Padang, I will issue the circular containing fair flight fares,” the transportation minister stated, while giving a public lecture at the University of Andalas, Padang, on Monday. The minister acknowledged that he had received many complaints from the public regarding the high fares on the eve of Lebaran, especially the flight fares to Padang, West Sumatra. The same high fares are also experienced by passengers leaving for Pontianak, West Kalimantan, especially ahead of the Chinese Lunar New Year. The air fare is also unreasonable. The minister noted that the passengers often complain of unreasonable rise in tariff. The government will issue a
circular containing an appeal to airlines to avoid unreasonable rise in the price of tickets. The minister remarked that related to flights to Padang to Minangkabau International Airport (BIM), in particular, the government plans to expand the terminal. One of the efforts made by the Ministry of Transportation is to increase the capacity of passengers at Minangkabau International Airport from 2.6 million passengers per year to 5.7 million passengers by the end of 2019. “The expansion will be made to anticipate the increase in the number of visits to West Sumatra, also as part of the efforts to encourage the tourism sector,” he remarked. The request for terminal expansion was also conveyed by President Joko Widodo when inaugurating the operation of the BIM train to Padang City on Monday (May 21).

PARIS - Alexander Zverev has emerged as the main threat to Rafael Nadal’s French Open crown in recent weeks as he bids to end Germany’s 81-year wait for a men’s singles title at Roland Garros. The 21-year-old suffered his fifth defeat in five meetings with Nadal in Sunday’s Italian Open final, but the way he fought back from losing the first set 6-1 only enhanced his already-burgeoning clay-court credentials. Kane named England’s World Cup captain
Tottenham striker Harry Kane will be England’s captain at the World Cup in Russia, the Football Association announced on Tuesday. Manager Gareth Southgate has shared the leadership role around since taking over as manager in 2016 but has now settled on Kane for the tournament, which begins next month. On May 22, 2017 Salman Abedi, a British man of Libyan heritage, blew himself up outside the venue, which had been hosting a concert by teen pop idol Ariana Grande. Manchester United and Manchester City adopted the tagline of “a city united” following the atrocity and Rashford has spoken of the devastating impact of the attack. The United and England striker wrote on his club’s website of his memories of growing up in Manchester and what the city means to him, recalling his own memories of attending events. “What happened in Manchester on 22 May, 2017 was unimaginable,” he said. “I won’t forget the moment I found out about the bombing at the Arena. In that moment, I won’t lie, it’s so tough to process. The likelihood of you knowing someone who was directly involved in it is quite high, so it’s a difficult moment.” United went on to win the Europa League final against Ajax on May 24, dedicating the victory to the victims of the bombing. “We all spoke about it beforehand in the dressing room before we went out for the final and when the game had finished and we’d won, the first thing we did was make sure we showed our respects for what had happened back home,” Rashford said. Russia’s doping capital gears up for World Cup
SARANSK — Nestled on the edge of the forest outside the Russian city of Saransk is the home of one of the most successful doping programs in history. Athletes from the V.M. Chegin Olympic Training Center dominated race-walking for over a decade, winning nine Olympic and 18 world championship medals between 2004 and 2016, when head coach Viktor Chegin was banned for life amid a blizzard of doping cases. Now Saransk — like Russia itself — wants to rebuild its reputation by hosting World Cup soccer games. Instead of housing athletes juiced with blood-booster EPO or the toxic experimental drug GW1516, the center, which has been renamed but still sports a large set of Olympic rings, will be home to the Panama national soccer team. Ahead of Panama’s arrival, a new pitch is being installed and security is tight. With political fallout going all the way to the Kremlin, doping scandals have threatened to overshadow Saransk and Russia’s World Cup preparations. Russia was banned from February’s Winter Olympics over past doping offenses, and its athletes competed as neutrals — with two disqualified for failed drug tests. In Saransk, government officials hope the World Cup erases memories of doping scandals. “That ended two years ago. (Chegin) left his job and he doesn’t work for us. We don’t even know where he is,” regional sports minister Vladimir Kireyev said while visiting the center earlier this month. “The whole region is living for its preparation for the World Cup, and we don’t have time for such things.” However, the Russian AntiDoping Agency says it has proof top athletes from the region, including a world championship silver medalist, traveled to Kyr-
gyzstan last month to train with Chegin. Five were excluded from the world team championships over the case. The agency’s head Yuri Ganus alleged to state news agency Tass last week that Kireyev threatened an anti-doping executive and that his ministry oversaw “the absence of effective anti-doping measures.” Kireyev’s office said Monday he’d only comment on those allegations after the World Cup. Russia’s doping turmoil has extended into the world of soccer. FIFA investigated the Russian national team defender Ruslan Kambolov this year after evidence he could have benefited from a program of covering up failed drug tests. Kambolov’s lawyers have said the investigation was dropped for lack of evidence, though FIFA hasn’t confirmed that. Kambolov was named May 11 to Russia’s World Cup squad, but removed three days later after the team said he injured his calf muscle. A World Anti-Doping Agency investigation in 2016 published evidence that Russian officials were prepared to cover for the country’s 2014 World Cup squad should its players test positive pre-tournament. However, there’s no indication any of them doped or that they knew of cover-up plans. The WADA investigation’s files also indicate players on the Russian under-19 and under-21 national teams tested positive and weren’t punished. The Russian government was implicated when WADA alleged senior officials ordered a coverup of drug tests around the 2014 Winter Olympics, which Russia hosted in Sochi. The Kremlin fiercely denies the allegations. The lab in Sochi where the cover-up allegedly took place is now a bar selling doping-themed cocktails near the city’s World Cup stadium. President Vladimir Putin has branded WADA’s star witness, for-
mer Moscow lab director Grigory Rodchenkov, a “nutjob” manipulated by the United States. Rodchenkov is under witness protection in the U.S. after fleeing Russia and faces arrest if he returns home. Russian law enforcement claims Rodchenkov made up allegations of drug use at the Sochi Olympics, and instead accused him of tricking clean, innocent Russians into taking banned substances. Russia’s shown little interest in investigating possible doping in soccer. Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Mutko, who is also president of the Russian Football Union, said Friday that performanceenhancing drugs don’t exist in soccer. “All that can happen here is marijuana, narcotics, sniffing something,” he told Russian media. “I’m absolutely calm about our team over this. We have nothing to hide.” Mutko was banned from the Olympics for life in December as part of a package of doping sanctions against Russia. In Saransk, many still see doped athletes as heroes who put the city on the map. In the Chegin center’s heyday, crowds of gold medalists trained together each morning on the city streets, watched by admiring locals. US to impose ‘strongest sanctions in history’ on Iran
WASHINGTON - US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday warned Tehran would be hit with the “strongest sanctions in history” and cautioned European firms against continuing to do business with it, toughening up Washington’s policy line after its withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal. In his first major foreign policy address since moving to the State Department from the CIA, the longtime Iran hawk and ardent opponent of the 2015 nuclear pact outlined an aggressive series of moves designed to counter Tehran, which he called the world’s top sponsor of terror. “We will apply unprecedented financial pressure on the Iranian regime. The leaders in Tehran will have no doubt about our seriousness,” Pompeo said in a speech at the conservative Heritage Foundation think tank. “This sting of sanctions will be painful if the regime does not change its course from the unacceptable and unproductive path it has chosen to one that rejoins the league of nations.”
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani quickly dismissed the threats, saying the rest of the world no longer accepts Washington making decisions on their behalf. “Who are you to decide for Iran and the world?” Rouhani said in a statement carried by multiple Iranian news agencies. “The world today does not accept that the United States decides for the world. Countries have their independence,” he added. Pompeo said if Iran were to abide by stricter terms, including ending its ballistic missile program and its interventions in regional conflicts from Yemen to Syria, the United States would lift its new sanctions.
President Donald Trump has long said the 2015 deal with Iran -- also signed by Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia -did not go far enough, and now wants the Europeans and others to support his hardline strategy. The deal was designed to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. The international community, including top US officials, have said Tehran had been in compliance. PALEMBANG - The South Sumatra tourism office has intensified tourism promotion by participating in various Indonesian and overseas travel marts. The province took part in the Jogya International Travel Mart held on May 7-9, 2018, Irene Camelyn Sinaga, head of the tourism office, noted here, Tuesday. Various tourist destinations, such as the old Al Munawar kampong, were promoted during the travel mart, she stated. The Al Munawar kampong is an Arab quarter whose community has maintained its Islamic traditions and preserved its old houses. In the kampong, visitors can sample typical coffee of South Sumatra, including coffee served with a golden spoon, a specialty of the Al Munawar area. Palembang is a multi-ethnic city where Malays, Javanese, and those of Chinese and Arabic descent have lived harmoniously and peacefully for hundreds of years. It has the potential to develop religious, culinary, shopping, and historical tourism attractions. The little-known Al-Munawar kampong, with a vibrant Islamic environment and a distinctive culture, has been designated as a cultural reserve, based on local Law No. 5 of 1992. Located in Ulu 13, the Al-Munawar kampong is currently being developed into a religious tourism site. During the travel mart in Yogyakarta, South Sumatra also promoted the planned implementation of the 18th Asian Games to be co-hosted by Jakarta and Palembang from August 18 to September 2, 2018. Some 9.5 thousand athletes, 2.5 thousand personnel of the Asian Olympic Council, and 5.5 thousand technical delegates from 45 Asian countries will participate or be involved in the event. At least 3.5 thousand media representatives are expected to cover the games. This is the second time that Indonesia is hosting the Asian Games, the first one being held in Jakarta in 1962. Minister issues circular on fair flight fares PADANG - Transportation Minister, Budi Karya Sumadi, will issue a circular on fair air flight tariff for airlines in the face of religious holidays. “When I come back from Padang, I will issue the circular containing fair flight fares,” the transportation minister stated, while giving a public lecture at the University of Andalas, Padang, on Monday. The minister acknowledged that he had received many complaints from the public regarding the high fares on the eve of Lebaran, especially the flight fares to Padang, West Sumatra. The same high fares are also experienced by passengers leaving for Pontianak, West Kalimantan, especially ahead of the Chinese Lunar New Year. The air fare is also unreasonable. The minister noted that the passengers often complain of unreasonable rise in tariff. The government will issue a
circular containing an appeal to airlines to avoid unreasonable rise in the price of tickets. The minister remarked that related to flights to Padang to Minangkabau International Airport (BIM), in particular, the government plans to expand the terminal. One of the efforts made by the Ministry of Transportation is to increase the capacity of passengers at Minangkabau International Airport from 2.6 million passengers per year to 5.7 million passengers by the end of 2019. “The expansion will be made to anticipate the increase in the number of visits to West Sumatra, also as part of the efforts to encourage the tourism sector,” he remarked. Merapi has erupted four times since Monday, sending out a 3,500 meter (11,483 feet) column of volcanic material and dusting the surrounding region in ash. Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the national disaster mitigation agency’s spokesman, said some 660 people living within the exclusion zone have evacuated since early Tuesday. Uber taps into Japan with first taxi-hailing pilot Uber announced Tuesday it would start its first taxi-hailing pilot programme in Japan this summer, as it bids to break into a tough market in the world’s third largest economy. The US firm has found it difficult to penetrate the Japanese market, where risk averse passengers prefer to stick to their high quality traditional taxi service. Hailing a taxi rarely takes more than a few seconds in major Japanese cities and there has been a relatively sluggish uptake of services like Uber, where consumers order an unlicensed car via a smartphone app. But Uber said in a statement Tuesday it would launch a pilot
programme this summer to hook up tourists and residents in the western Awaji island with available taxi drivers. Uber said it aimed to provide local residents and tourists with “reliable and safe transportation” on the small island, which is home to just over 150,000 people. “I’m very excited that Uber’s technology will contribute to further enhancing the transit environment of Awaji Island,” Brooks Entwistle, Uber’s Chief Business Officer, said in the statement, adding it will be “the first initiative of its kind in Japan”. Uber is far from alone in targeting the Japanese taxi market, with Chinese ride-hailing giant Didi Chuxing and Japanese telecom firm SoftBank announcing
a deal in early February to develop a taxi app in Japan. SoftBank has heavily invested in the taxi market and recently took a 15 percent stake in Uber. And Sony has said it is planning a joint venture to offer artificial intelligence technology to six taxi operators, which currently own a total of 10,000 vehicles in Tokyo. The technology would use AI to predict demand for taxis and allow companies to more efficiently mobilise their resources. The London-listed giant did not specify the number of job losses -- but thousands of positions are believed to be at risk, according to media. “M&S will now close over 100 stores in total by 2022, including 21 that have already closed and the 14 stores that are announced today as proposed for closure or set to close,” the company said. M&S had in November 2016 launched a five-year overhaul of its UK stores amid fierce competition from supermarkets and budget garment chain Primark -- as well as online giants like Amazon. The restructuring was accelerated last last year. “We are making good progress with our plans to reshape our store estate to be more relevant to our customers and support our online growth plans,” said Sacha Berendji, M&S retail, operations and property director. This tradition is carried out through generations every year falling on new moon of the Balinese ninth month or at the night of Pengrupukan or the day before celebration of Nyepi, Monday (Mar. 27). Lukat gni also called flame war is derived from two words, namely lukat and gni. Lukat or melukat means cleansing of all impurities and the unseen while gni means fire. Lukat gni can be interpreted as a tradition of cleansing or purifying the microcosm and macrocosm from any kind of impurities by means of fire. This tradition is
also aimed at maintaining balance of nature and humans to result in harmony in the implementation of the catur bratha penyepian or five abstinences. This lukat gni tradition begins with a joint worship at temples or family temple to invoke safety and smoothness for the implementation of lukat gni. Dozens of youths that take part in this activity are then heading for the catus pata or central intersection of the village to carry out the tradition. Here, the participants further slammed the fire of tied danyuh (dried coconut leaves) onto each opponent. No injuries are seen despite being hit by fire. Moreover, there is no resentment among the participants. The atmosphere is

Gde Anom Merta, said that flame war is a heritage tradition of Satria Kawan Palace. “As younger generations, we must continue and preserve the traditions having been passed down by the elders here. This tradition has actually existed since around hundreds of years ago,” he said after the implementation of the lukat gni on Monday (Mar. 27). According to him, the lukat gni often known as flame war is one of the purificatory rites carried out to purify the macrocosm and microcosm. Implementation of this annual tradition is expected to be able to neutralize negative effects and create harmony in ourselves and the balance of the universe. “Through this lukat gni, we will create harmony and balance of the universe,” he said. A participant of lukat gni, A.A. Gde Baskara Diningrat, said that he took this tradition to preserve the heritage. Armed with selfconfidence, he said, the heat of the fire afflicting to the body will not be felt. Every fire is believed to eliminate all the impurities inside. “With the confidence I have, the more exposed to the fire, the more impurities will be missing from our body,” said Baskara who participates regularly in this tradition every year. Chief of Kediri customary village, AAG Ngurah Panji Wisnu, explained that during the eleven days, the entire customary villagers of Kediri ranging from children to adults will go around the village while playing the sounds from a variety of sources. They are ranging from kulkul (bamboo split drum), gong or okokan (large cow bell). Some have even been modified with the accompaniment of bleganjur. “In total, there are seven hamlets at Kediri customary village that will take turns to go round from one hamlet to another hamlet existing is at our village,” he explained. Further, he said that tektekan tradition in the area of Kediri customary village is inherited from generation to generation. So far, there is no any record on the history of its origin. According to his ancestors, the tradition came together with the outbreaks in Kediri. “At that time, many residents were experiencing sickness to death and they also faced harvest failure because their paddy fields were attacked by pests,” he said.
Due to concerns over the calamity occurred at that time, community leaders and temple priests agreed to invoke guidance by praying at local Puseh Temple. At that time, they got a clue if the pandemic could be eliminated by means of sounds. Armed with this clue, the residents of Kediri came down and went around the village while playing tektekan for few days. Finally, it was proved that the plague attacking the customary village disappeared. Since then, the tektekan tradition has psychical function to dismiss plague. Its implementation cannot be predicted because it depends on the incidence of outbreak at the village. With the changing of time or more precisely from 2014 the tektekan tradition began to be transformed into an entertainment art. Moreover, local villagers agreed to hold this tradition as annual attraction coinciding with the Hindus celebrating Nyepi. During the execution of tektekan tradition at local customary village, the officials suggest road users to find alternative road section. “We’ve made coordination with police authority, especially on the security and traffic diversion,” he concluded. Ayu Bakery produces thousands of cakes each day
DENPASAR - It can be imagined that a home industry can produce thousands or even tens of thousands of cakes each day. It only involves 13 employees working in production. This is done by Ayu Bakery owned by I Made Suarsa, a native to Kedonganan.
When met at one of the cafés at Kedonganan recently, Suarsa said he can produce thousands of cakes per day. For such number, he spends seven sacks of flour (1 sack = 25kg). So, from the seven sacks of flour, he can produce thousands of cakes. A total of 13 employees are working in producing the cakes. Due to large number of orders, the production of cakes is made into two shifts. Morning shift lasts from 07:00 – 15:00 and the afternoon shift from 15:00 – 23:00. Before the eruption of Mount Agung, there were three shifts in the production. So, his kitchen was busy making cakes for 24 hours. Many types of cakes he can produce such as croissant, Danish pastry, wet cake, bread, muffins, sponge and special order like birthday cake. “Every day we mostly produce croissant and Danish pastry,” he added. Thousands of the cakes are supplied to hotels, all the cafés along the beach of Kedonganan as well as his small shop and retailers. Currently, he has worked with 80 hotels to supply cakes. To hotels, he only supplies some kinds of cake. However, he also supplies all kinds of cakes to particular customers. Meanwhile, all the cafés at Kedonganan having a birthday package or wedding party, the cake needs are supplied by Ayu Bakery. “Several restaurants offering

The Powao men -- fathers and brothers, cousins and uncles -- from neighbouring Iligan city were in Marawi for construction jobs when clashes with Islamic State-aligned fighters broke out on May 23 last year. In the fighting that ensued, government airstrikes on Marawi and house-to-house fighting left neighbourhoods in ruins that have been compared to battlegrounds in Syria or Iraq. Only one of the Powao group -- the eleventh man -- escaped and it was from him the wives learned that an airstrike may have killed some of them, while jihadists herded others into a van. “Until I see their bodies, I won’t believe they are dead,” 31-year-old Alma Tome said of her husband Rowel and the others. The Powaos are among 78 people officially listed as missing, though possibly hundreds more disappeared. Five dead, dozens quarantined as virus fears spread in India NEW DELHI - A deadly virus carried by fruit bats has killed at least five people in southern India and more than 90 people are in quarantine, a top health official said Tuesday. Other deaths are suspected to have been caused by Nipah virus and authorities have ordered emergency measures to control the outbreak. “We can confirm that five people have died from the Nipah virus,” Kerala state health surveillance officer K.J. Reena told AFP. Media reports said 10 people had died but officials told AFP final tests had not been completed on other suspicious deaths. Nine people have been admitted to hospital with symptoms resembling the virus, which the World Health Organization says is fatal in 70 percent of cases, Reena added. One of the nine has tested positive for Nipah.
“We also traced 94 people who had come in contact with the ones who died and they have been quarantined as a precaution,” Reena added. There is no vaccination for Nipah, which has killed more than 260 people in Malaysia, Bangladesh and India in outbreaks since 1998. The WHO has named Nipah as one of the eight priority diseases that could cause an epidemic, alongside Ebola and Zika. The virus induces flu-like symptoms that lead to an agonising encephalitis and coma. Three members of the same family are among the fatalities. Rising interst in reading amongst people of Jembrana
NEGARA - Jembrana’s Regional Public Library has been seen a rise in the public;s interest in reading. interest in reading. “Previously there were only about 20 visitors a day, but now that number is about to about 50”, said Head of the Jembrana Library and Archive Agency, Ida Ayu Made Dharma Yanti Putra, accompanied by the Division Head of the Jembrana Public Relations and Protocol, Komang Suparta, on Monday (May 21) . The Library and Archive Agency has been taking steps to encourage young children and adults alike to read and it seems to be working as students and other readers often come to the library after work or school. “Sometimes parents bring their children to play in the playground located behind the cultural center and then come to the library to read”, explained Dharma Yanti. The library that is located on the ground floor of the cultural center started providing free internet access, ari conditioning and cleaned made the whole atmosphere generally more inviting to entice more people to use the facilities. Many housewives have also started coming to the library to consult cook books, take part in majejahitan or making offerings and use the internet facilities to promote their home businesses. “We also provide computer and internet lessons”, said Dharma Yanti. As of 2017, the library has a collection of 10,517 titles and a total of 27,070 books that cover a wide range of subjects from phi-
losophy, religion, social sciences, language, pure science, therapeutics, arts, fiction, geography and history. The library also holds storytelling events for elementary school students, chanting of pupuh pangkur competition for junior high school students and and poetry reading competitions in Balinese language for high school students. Dharma Yanti added that the library also has two mobile library vans that visit schools and villages. “The library van is a way to introduce schools and villages to the library, but we also invite people to come directly to the library that is open from 07:3019:00”, she explained. The Jembrana Public Library however does face some obstacles including lack of librarians, Currently they only have one and so far have no archivist. “Four people have been provided with training and they are currently waiting to for the decree of appointment to start working”, added Yanti. DENPASAR - A citizen of the United States, defendant Keita Stevenson Lovelace, 45, was convicted and sentenced to 1.5 years in prison on Monday (May 21). During the trial at the Denpasar District Court, the man who works as a fashion designer was found guilty of misusing narcotics (delta 9 Tetrahydrocannabinol) that were found hidden in 20 cartridges / vials containing yellow liquid with an overall weight of 336.6 grams gross or 0.4 ml or 0.4 gram net. Responding to the verdict, the defendant through his legal advisor team, Mila Tayeb et al.,
immediately accepted the verdict that was lesser that the prosecutor’s charges. Previously, public prosecutor Suhadi and Martinus had asked for a sentence of two years. In their letters of the suit, the defendant Keita Stevenson Lovelace was declared legally and convincingly guilty of committing the crime of class I drug abuse, as in the third alternative allegation. Chinese products are cheaper and are in great demand on international markets. We need to work together to address these issues. Bali is famous for the high quality of its handicraft products, but as a result prices here are higher and the demand seems to have decreases. As a Balinese handicrafts are have a competitive disadvantage. All stakeholders are therefor being invited to increase the bargaining power of Balinese craft products though innovation. Artisans need to be more creative in design and use information technology for
marketing their goods. The role of government is also necessary. As arsana explained, studies about the problmes facing craft entrepreneurs and artisans as well as solutions have been presented to the government, however little action has been taken. “Solutions need to be implemeted as soon as possible”, he added The government should assist this labour intensive sector in overcoming this downturn. Handycraft home industries can help the govenrment in overcoming unmenployment more quickly. Also the export of craft products ring in foreing exchange eranings which also helps the national economy. LOS ANGELES - Barack and Michelle Obama have entered into a multi-year agreement to produce films and series with Netflix, the world’s leading internet entertainment service announced on Monday. The former first couple have launched Higher Ground Productions to produce a variety of content for the video streamer, possibly including scripted series, documentaries and features. “One of the simple joys of our time in public service was getting to meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life, and to help them share their experiences with a wider audience,” Obama, who served two terms in the White House from 2009, said in a statement. “That’s why Michelle and I are so excited to partner with Netflix. We hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the entire world.” The Obamas already have a large social media presence -- a combined 150 million followers on Twitter and Instagram -- but the deal will see their influence boosted significantly by Netflix’s 125 million subscribers in 190

The faux weapon, mainly made
of wood, was put on display in New York on Monday by Julien’s Auctions -- after more than 30 years tucked away in the belongings of James Schoppe, the art director for “Return of the Jedi” (1983). Martin Nolan, the auction house’s executive director, said Schoppe, an Oscar nominee for his work on the film, finally decided to part with Solo’s gun and about 40 other ‘Jedi’ items, including an Ewok axe and plans for Jabba the Hutt’s ship. Foreign media head to N. Korea to see nuclear site destruction
Foreign journalists headed to North Korea on Tuesday to watch the promised destruction of its nuclear test site, a move seen as a goodwill gesture before a planned summit with the United States. Reporters from China, the US and Russia departed on a charter flight from Beijing, according to Chinese state broadcaster CGTN which is part of the contingent.
The group will cover the demolition of the Punggye-ri nuclear testing site inside a mountain in the northeast of the country, which is scheduled to take place between Wednesday to Friday, depending on the weather. Agence France-Presse is one of a number of major media organisations not invited to cover the event. Pyongyang announced earlier this month that it planned to “completely” destroy the facility by blowing up the test site’s access tunnels, a move welcomed by Washington and Seoul.
