‘Alien: Covenant’ Slides Past ‘Guardians 2’ to Win Weekend With $36 Million

LOS ANGELES - As this weekend approached, the question lingered if “Alien: Covenant” would be able to unseat “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” from the top spot at the domestic box office. Now, we have an answer. As of Sunday morning, “Covenant,” from 20th Century Fox and Scott Free Productions, looks to be the winner with a three-day estimate of $36 million from 3,761 locations. That’s just above Disney’s “Guardians” sequel which is raking in an

additional $35.3 million from 4,347 spots. The super sequel is seeing only a 46% drop from last weekend, and its total domestic earnings now exceed $300 million. While “Alien” may have won, the film’s price tag in the $100 million range and marketing costs detract from the victory. The sixth installment in the Alien franchise (not counting the two Alien vs. Predator films) was directed by Ridley Scott and stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston,

Billy Crudup, and Danny McBride. It holds a 73% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is in line with 2012’s “Prometheus.” Although it came in already having made $42 million overseas and $36 million was enough to land in the top slot, “Alien” grossed less during its first weekend in the U.S. than “Prometheus” did in 2012 ($51 million). No risk of snap election in Spain after Sanchez’s return, says PM

MADRID - There is no risk of a snap national election in Spain, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said on Monday, playing down any threat to his minority-led government from a change of leadership in the opposition Socialist party. The track record of left-winger Pedro Sanchez, ousted as Socialist leader in October and re-elected to the post on Sunday, points to less cooperation with the government on major cross-party issues including labour reform and budget spending. But Rajoy noted his government had already passed legislation during its seven-month tenure without the backing of the second-biggest party in parliament. “There won’t be early elections,” he told journalists on Monday. “The Socialist party changes nothing for me. German Beach conjured up into public park MANGPURA —The government of Badung will conjure up the German Beach into a representative public park. Formerly, the white sandy beach was the harbor of Kuta. At this harbor, numerous merchants from outside Bali docked while carrying merchandise for transaction at that time. However, today the beach located on Jalan Wana Segara, Tuban customary village, Kuta, is exposed to seawater abrasion. Local community then proposed to district government of Badung to do the arrangement. Head of the Badung Public Works and Housing Agency (PUPR), I.B. Surya Suamba, confirmed that his agency is doing the arrangement of the German Beach, Kuta. This arrangement activity is the proposal of the Segara hamlet community, Kuta village. “In the future, this area will be arranged into a representative public park. We will undertake it gradually along one kilometer,” said Surya Suamba when asked for his confirmation on Sunday (May 21). According to him, his agency is now just carrying out regular arrangement, namely smoothing the sand by using heavy equipment. Related to the Detail Engineering Design (DED), it will be proposed in the 2017 budgetary amendment. “Since the proposal of re-arranging the German Beach is from the local community, in the planning it will involve the community as well,” he explained. It is said that in general the arrangement of the German Beach is intended to create a representative public park for the community and tourists. A legislator of the Badung House of Representatives from Kuta, Ni Luh Gede Sri Mediastuti, stated that the arrangement of German Beach is indeed one of the proposals of the Segara hamlet community that will be followed up by the government soon. “The regent has agreed to do the arrangement of the German Beach so that it will become a more representative public area,” he said. This politician of Golkar Party further stated that the community will play an active role in the arrangement of the German Beach starting from planning to the implementation, in the form of carrying out mutual assistance activities. MSS issues recedes, price of pig remains to drop TABANAN —

Pig farm in Tabanan had been hit by the issue of Streptococcus suis meningitis (MSS) some time ago and now it has begun to subside. People gradually buy pork again without worries. This can be seen from the increasingly better condition of the market demand for pork. Even though it has improved, the price of pig at farmer level remains plummeted. Deputy Chairman of Bali pig breeder association (GUBI), Nyoman Ariadi, said on Sunday (May 21) in Tabanan said that after the MSS the fate of pig farmers is not better than before. The price of pigs that previously dropped as the impact of MSS does not change significantly. “In other words, the price tends to stagnate and even decreases at this time,” he said. This price decline makes community-based farmers still lose after the meningitis issue. Actually the current stock of pigs at the level of breeders has gone far down from previously. Under the law of market, if the stock declines, the price should increase, but the decline in stock does not make the price of pigs at the level of breeders exciting. According to Ariadi, it is alleged to happen due to strategy at butcher level that makes the price of pigs down as much as IDR 1,000-IDR 2,000 per kg than before. “Previously, the price was in the range

of IDR 26,000-IDR 27,000 per kg, now it is even in the range IDR 24,000-IDR 25,000 per kg. Moreover, the price even touches the point of IDR 23,000 per kg depending on meat quality,” he explained. He continued that indication of the slaughter’s strategy to reduce the selling price of pigs can be seen in the act of butchers that buy pigs at breeders at IDR 24,000 per kg and they promised to take the pig within one or two days. However, in reality after the price agreement, the butcher did not immediately take the pigs purchased as per the agreement. As a result, the breeders are confused because the longer the maintenance cost to be borne by farmers becomes quite larger as well, especially for the purchase of feed. “Finally, the condition makes the pig farmers resigned. At the end, no matter how much the price offered by other butchers, the breeders tends to forcibly

follow the price to be offered, even though it is cheaper than the market price,” he said. Ariadi, who is also a pig farmer in Tabanan, added that defenseless condition of pig breeders to the selling price is further aggravated by the absence of rules on the pig selling price by the government to protect breeders all this time. In the pig farming, the break-even point (BEP) is at IDR 24,000 per kg. With this range, the estimated price of pork in the market is IDR 30,000 per kg. “Actually, breeders only ask for a little profit of the BEP. In fact, the price of pig in the field at the level of breeders tends to touch the price of BEP,” he said. He hoped the upcoming local governments can protect pig breeders, so that they can get revenue from the ideal business results. In other words, the breeders get the difference from the cost incurred so that they can run the business vivaciously. (kmb24)

NASA plans emergency spacewalk on International Space Station

CAPE CANAVERAL - A pair of astronauts will venture outside the International Space Station on Tuesday for an emergency spacewalk to replace a failed computer, one of two that control major U.S. systems aboard the orbiting outpost, NASA said on Sunday. The primary device failed on Saturday, leaving the $100 billion orbiting laboratory to depend on a backup system to route commands to its solar power system, radiators, cooling loops and other equipment. The station’s current five-mem-

laboratory for biology, life science, materials science and physics experiments, as well as astronomical observations and Earth remote sensing. LONDON - Scientists in Britain plan to harness the Zika virus to try to kill brain tumour cells in experiments that they say could lead to new ways to fight an aggressive type of cancer. The research will focus on glioblastoma, the most common form of brain cancer, which has a five-year survival rate of barely 5 percent. Zika causes severe disability in babies by attacking developing stem cells in the brain - but in adults, whose brains are fully formed, it often causes no more than mild flu-like symptoms. In glioblastoma, the cancer cells are similar to those in the developing

brain, suggesting that the virus could be used to target them while sparing normal adult brain tissue. Experts say existing treatments have to be given at low doses to avoid damaging healthy tissue. Researchers led by Harry Bulstrode at Cambridge University will use tumour cells in the lab and in mice to assess Zika’s potential. The mosquito-borne virus has spread to more than 60 countries and territories in a global outbreak that was first identified in Brazil in 2015. “Zika virus infection in babies and children is a major global health

concern, and the focus has been to discover more about the virus to find new possible treatments,” Bulstrode said in a statement. “We’re taking a different approach, and want to use these new insights to see if the virus can be unleashed against one of the hardest-to-treat cancers ... “We hope to show that the Zika virus can slow down brain tumour growth in tests in the lab,” Bulstrode added. “If we can learn lessons from Zika’s ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and target brain stem cells selectively, we could be holding the key to future treatments.” (rtr)

Awakening art nostalgia of Dutch occupation period

SINGARAJA - Apart from office buildings another heritage left from the Dutch colonial period is the art of Janger that was a popular form of entertainment in Buleleng during the occupation. The Janger from Menyali village, Sawan that emerged during the colonial period has been reconstructed by the Janger Saraswati Art Troupe and was recently performed in the former Buleleng Harbour. The District of Buleleng will be presenting the Janger Menyali during the 39th Bali Arts Festival (BAF) in June at the Denpasar Art Center, evoking the heyday of this art form. The Janger Menyali performance in Buleleng Harbour was especially interesting because it was performed by elderly dancers who had not performed the Janger since the 1960’s and 70’s. The dancers looking dapper

in their attire of red berets, badges, shirts, socks and shoes, This costume, he said is different than the one usually worn by more contemporary Janger dances. Headman of Menyali, Made Jaya Harta, explained that male Janger dancers used to be known as jipak. Jipak Janger dancers from his village indeed used to be wear costumes inspired by the Dutch Army that was docked at Buleleng Customs (former Buleleng Harbor—Ed). Over time, the style and costume of Janger Menyali changed under the influenced of other arts including “Janger Kreasi”. “The songs and dance movements are similar but the costumes

for “Janger Kresi” are quite different. Janger Menyali is rarely ever performed anymore and was on the verge of disappearing all together before this reconstruction was put together. There was one staging of this dance not too long ago in Lombok”, said Headman Harta. The reconstruction of Janger Menyali started in Febuary 2017. It was considered to be important to revive this dance as it is believed to be a sacred dance (sanghyang dance). Harta and others are therefor committed to preserving the Janger Menyali dance. “We have to preserve this ancestral heritage from the Dutch era. We started to reconstruct this dance by teaming up with the old dancers and then got some younger dancers involved. The result is a dance that can make Buleleng proud” explained Harta. (mud)

ANKARA - Turkey put on trial 200 suspects on Monday including senior military officers accused of plotting and orchestrating last year’s failed coup, in a court case where prosecutors are calling for life sentences. The defendants, among them President Tayyip Erdogan’s aidede-camp, the former head of Turkey’s air force, and dozens of generals, colonels and majors, were paraded on their way to court past dozens of protesters who demanded the death penalty and threw nooses towards them. Around 1,500 security personnel were deployed for security at the trial, state-run Anadolu news agency reported, which was held in a purpose-built courthouse in Sincan on the outskirts of the Turkish capital. More than 240 people, many of them civilians, were killed in the failed coup on July 15, 2016, when a group of rogue soldiers commandeered tanks, warplanes and helicopters, bombing the parliament and attempting to overthrow the government. Those on trial in Sincan included core suspects behind the coup who raided the state broadcaster and forced the presenter to read out an announcement saying the army had taken over and Turkey was being run by a committee they called “Peace at Home”. Erdogan blames Fetullah Gulen, a U.S.-based cleric and a former ally, and his global network for orchestrating the coup, a charge Gulen denies. Turkish authorities have arrested nearly 50,000 people over

alleged links with the preacher. At the start of the hearing, families of the victims attending the trial screamed at the defendants, and one woman in the courtroom, whose son was killed during the coup, broke down. “Kill these traitors, the murderers of my son,” she screamed before fainting. The judge called for a medical team to be brought into the courtroom. From a total of 221 defendants, more than 200 are from the military and more than half of those were officers who held ranks from captains up to generals. All but 12 of the suspects, who are still at large, appeared in court. Gulen, who is among the defendants, is among those being tried in absentia. Following confirmation of the suspects’ identity and the reading of a summary of the roughly 2,000page indictment, suspects will be able to put forward their defence. Hearings at the trial, one of the largest of several coup-related trials taking place across Turkey, are expected to last until June 16. Citing the coup attempt as a grave threat to the state, Turkish authorities have also sacked or suspended around 150,000 civil servants, teachers, judges, prosecutors, police and soldiers and have shut down around 150 media outlets. While the detentions may have been supported by some Turks in the immediate aftermath of the abortive putsch, criticism mounted as arrests widened to include groups of which many deny any connection to Gulen. Greece looks for debt help after backing further cuts BRUSSELS - Greece is seeking Monday to persuade its creditors in Europe that it has done enough to get another chunk of bailout loans and a commitment on alleviating Athens’ hefty debt burden. Greek Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos is to meet his counterparts from the 19-country eurozone at a meeting in Brussels, where Greece will once again be top of the agenda. The country is in the middle of its third international bailout, but its progress has been slow in light of various disagreements related to the reforms the government has to impose in return for the rescue money. The left-led Greek government hopes that a package of measures, including further spending cuts and economic reforms, passed by lawmakers last week will be enough to break the logjam and allow the so-called eurogroup to release a new bailout installment, without which the country would struggle to meet its debt servicing obligations in July. Agreement will also accelerate negotiations on easing Greece’s debt repayment terms. On Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron said his new administration will push for a Greek debt relief deal. Macron’s office said the president spoke Monday with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and stressed “his determination to find an accord soon to lighten the burden of Greek debt over the long term.” The phone conversation was the first contact between the two since Macron’s election earlier this month. French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire, named last week, is joining his peers for the talks Monday and is traveling to the Belgian capital with Wolfgang Schaeuble, his counterpart in Berlin who has been a vocal critic of Greece over the seven years of its bailout era. While Le Maire said it’s “important there be a solution that reassures the Greek people and of course reassures Greece’s creditors,” Schaeuble insisted that “structural reforms are the decisive thing” to improve Greek growth. He said that “extra measures if required” would come after the bailout program expires next year. The Greek government is hoping to secure a deal as soon as possible so it can lift the uncertainty that’s been hanging around the Greek economy over recent months. Though Greece emerged from its economic depression in 2014 and its public finances have improved dramatically, the economy is back in recession, having shrunk for two straight quarters. Analysts say the main reason why Greece has taken a step back is its stalled bailout negotiations. The hope is that the release of bailout funds soon will shore up confidence that the country won’t face bankruptcy again soon. Greece is currently in the midst of its third bailout program — the current three-year program expires in the summer of 2018 and could be worth up to 86 billion euros ($95 billion) in total. In return for the money, the government promised to enact a series of austerity measures as well as economic reforms — its progress is continually monitored by institutions from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund. While the austerity measures have seen Greece’s public finances improve, the draconian spending cuts have seen poverty rates surge to more than 35 percent. And the country’s debt burden stands at around 175 percent, a level that the Greek government thinks is unsustainable in the long-term — hence its insistence on some debt relief, at least in the form of lower interest payments and longer repayment terms. BRUSSELS - Euro zone countries improved their fiscal stance, a sign of growing financial stability, the EU Commission said on Monday, but it called on France to take new action to comply with EU deficit limits and warned Italy faced “urgent” challenges. Every spring the EU executive publishes an assessment of the fiscal positions of each of the 28 EU member states, along with its recommendations for economic reforms and for disciplinary measures against those with unbalanced budgets. The 19-country euro zone has lowered its total budget deficit to 1.5 percent of the bloc’s gross domestic product in 2016. The Commission forecasts the gap is to fall further this year and next, well below the 3 percent of GDP limit. The EU as a whole had an aggregate deficit of 1.7 percent last year, which is also set to decrease. In its report the commission recommended an end to disciplinary procedures against Portugal and Croatia due to improvements in their public finances. The commission’s recommendations must be approved by EU finance ministers to come into force. But around the bloc economic recovery and budget improvements were “uneven,” Economics Commissioner Pierre Moscovici said in a statement. France, along with Spain, Greece, Britain, will continue to face disciplinary procedures for its excessive budget deficit. Disciplinary steps against France, the euro zone’s second largest economy, have been in place since 2009. It has until the end of this year to

bring the budget shortfall below the EU ceiling of 3 percent of GDP. The Commission forecasts France’s deficit will this year shrink to 3.0 percent this year but rebound again to 3.2 percent next year, unless the government appointed by French President Emmanuel Macron takes action. “France needs to stand ready to take further measures to ensure compliance in 2017 and ... further measures will be needed as of 2018 to comply with the provisions of the Stability and Growth Pact,” the Commission said. France must cut its structural deficit -- the measure that excludes business cycle swings and one off spending and revenue -- by a minimum of 0.4 percent of GDP next year, but under existing policies that deficit is predicted to rise 0.5 percent of GDP. But the Commission also signalled it would apply discretion in the application of its budget rules to allow France to take any measures to strengthen its economy that would help it comply. “In that context, the Commission

intends to make use of the applicable margin of appreciation in the light of the cyclical situation of France,” the Commission said. ITALY’S WOES Italy, which after Greece has the bloc’s largest public debt, faces “urgent challenges”, the Commission said, though it sees additional budget measures adopted by Rome in April as sufficient to keep Italy’s accounts in line with EU rules for this year. Nonetheless the Italian government needs to make “substantial fiscal efforts” and carry out important reforms next year, targeting taxation, excessively long civil trials and the reduction of bad loans in troubled banks. Italy has asked for more time to sell non-performing loans in an attempt to obtain better prices and reduce capital shortfalls in ailing banks. Any austerity measures imposed by the EU on Italy could strengthen the country’s eurosceptic parties, which are on the rise as the country gears up for elections due by May 2018. The bloc’s pact for fiscal accountability is already unpopular in Italy. The Commission pledged to use all possible leeway to review the agreed target of a structural correction of at least 0.6 percent of the Italian GDP next year. Italy is forecast to have the slowest growth in the EU this year and next at around 1 percent of GDP.(rtr)

Hackers hit Russian bank customers, planned international cyber raids

MOSCOW - Russian cyber criminals used malware planted on Android mobile devices to steal from domestic bank customers and were planning to target European lenders before their arrest, investigators and sources with knowledge of the case told Reuters. Their campaign raised a relatively small sum by cyber-crime standards - more than 50 million roubles ($892,000) - but they had also obtained more sophisticated malicious software for a modest monthly fee to go after the clients of banks in France and possibly a range of other western nations. Russia’s relationship to cyber crime is under intense scrutiny after U.S. intelligence officials alleged that Russian hackers had tried to help Republican Donald Trump win the U.S. presidency by hacking Democratic Party servers. The Kremlin has repeatedly denied the allegation.

The gang members tricked the Russian banks’ customers into downloading malware via fake mobile banking applications, as well as via pornography and e-commerce programmes, according to a report compiled by cyber security firm Group-IB which investigated the attack with the Russian Interior Ministry. The criminals - 16 suspects were arrested by Russian law enforcement authorities in November last year - infected more than a million smartphones in Russia, on average compromising 3,500 devices a day, Group-IB said. CARACAS - Venezuela possesses 5,000 Russian-made MANPADS surface-to-air weapons, according to a military document reviewed by Reuters, the largest known stockpile in Latin America and a source of concern for U.S. officials amid the country’s mounting turmoil. Venezuela’s socialist government has long used the threat of an “imperialist” invasion by the United States to justify an arms buildup. Much of that arsenal was obtained from Russia by Venezuela’s late President Hugo Chavez, whose tenure lasted from 1999 until his death in 2013. The missiles, which are shoulder-mounted and can be operated by one person, pose a serious threat to commercial and military aircraft. Weapons experts said there have long been fears that the weapons could be stolen, sold or somehow channeled to the wrong hands, concerns exacerbated by the current civil unrest in Venezuela and the economic crisis roiling the oil-producing nation. According to a Venezuelan military presentation seen by Reuters, the South American country has 5,000 SA-24 Man-Portable Air-Defense System (MANPADS) missiles, also known as the Igla-S. The document seen by Reuters provides the most complete count to date of the size of the arms stockpile. Public weapons registries confirm the bulk of the numbers seen on the Venezuelan military presentation. BUDVA - Tiny Montenegro will take a huge step towards integrating with the West when it becomes the 29th member of NATO this week, but it risks paying a heavy price for spurning Russia. For nearly a decade after Montenegro split from Serbia in 2006, Moscow cultivated close ties with the former Yugoslav republic, and money poured in from Russian investors and tourists. It was a love affair underpinned not just by commercial and diplomatic logic but also by historic, religious and linguistic ties between the two Slav countries. “Back in 2006 Montenegro was advertised as a desirable destination for Russians, because it is a beautiful country and an Orthodox Christian one,” said Vadim Verhovski, a Russian investment banker who, with partners, has invested 25 million euros ($28 million) to buy land near the coastal town of Budva. Now the romance has turned to rancour. Montenegro blamed Russia for an alleged plot to as-

sassinate its prime minister last October which officials said was aimed at blocking its entry to NATO. The Kremlin called that absurd. In April, Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned of a “surge of anti-Russian hysteria” in Montenegro. The chill is hitting tourism: latest available data, for March, showed Russians accounted for 7.3 percent of all tourist overnight stays that month compared to nearly 30 percent in March 2014 and 19.2 percent in March 2016. Advertising hoardings in Russian, promoting luxury apartments with views of the Adriatic, were once ubiquitous along the coastal highway. Now they have vanished, and Russian-language

signs have largely disappeared from shops. Prime Minister Dusko Markovic said a recent Russian ban on imports of wine from Montenegro was linked to its NATO membership. Moscow said it had discovered banned pesticides in the wine. “We are prepared for any decision (by Russia) and nothing is going to deter us from the path we decided to take,” Markovic told reporters. In an emailed statement to Reuters, he said: “The Balkans for centuries has been the scene of a struggle between the West and the East. Like other states in the region, Montenegro has strong links with the East, but in the 2006 we made a key decision that we would like to adopt Western standards and values.” (rtr)

JAKARTA — Indonesian police detained dozens of men including several foreigners in a weekend raid on a gay sauna in the capital, another sign of growing hostility to homosexuality in the world’s most populous Muslim nation. Police spokesman Argo Yuwono said 141 men were detained for questioning in the raid Sunday evening on the gym and sauna in north Jakarta. Police say the sauna was the venue for a sex party promoted as “The Wild One.” Homosexuality is not illegal in Indonesia, but police said the country’s pornography laws had been violated. Ten people will be charged, police said, including the sauna’s owner, several staff including strippers, a gym trainer, receptionist and security guard, and two visitors to the club who allegedly performed oral sex. If found guilty, they face penalties of up to 10 years in prison and fines. As media waited for a police news conference on Monday afternoon, some of the arrested men were put on display, their faces covered by black ski masks. Last month, police in Surabaya, Indonesia’s second-largest city, arrested 14 men at what they alleged was a sex party and forced them to have HIV tests. A coalition of legal aid and criminal justice reform groups condemned the raid and “arbi-

trary” arrests. It said police further violated the rights of those arrested by photographing them naked and facilitating the spread of those images on social media. The group, which is providing legal representation, said in a statement that some of the men were brought to a police station in north Jakarta naked, and that others were stripped at the station. North Jakarta chief police detective Nasriadi, who goes by one name, said four foreigners were caught in the raid — two men from Malaysia, one Singaporean and one UK man. They are still being questioned as witnesses, he said. Indonesia’s low-profile LGBT community has been increasingly under siege in the past year. Prejudice has been fanned by stridently anti-gay comments from Cabinet ministers and other high-profile Indonesians. Last week, a Shariah court in the conservative province of Aceh sentenced two men to public caning for gay sex. Vigilantes broke into the couple’s rented accommodation to film them having sex and handed them over to Shariah police. The court sentenced the men, aged 20 and 23, to 85 lashes each, sparking condemnation from rights groups. Aceh is the only province in Indonesia to practice Shariah law, though some areas have adopted Shariah-style bylaws.(ap)

GENEVA - U.N. experts urged Indonesia on Monday to free Jakarta’s Christian governor, who was jailed this month for blasphemy - a conviction that risks encouraging Islamists to challenge secularism in the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation. Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, an ethnic Chinese popularly known as “Ahok”, was jailed on May 9 for a longer-thanexpected two years under a fatwa from Indonesia’s highest Muslim clerical council and after aggressive media campaigns and violent protests. The government should have stood up to those pressures, the three U.N. experts said. Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo was an ally of Purnama and the verdict will be a setback for his government as it seeks to quell radical groups and soothe investors’ concerns that the country’s secular values were at risk. “Instead of speaking out against hate speech by the leaders of the protests, the Indonesian authorities appear to have appeased incitement to religious intolerance and discrimination,” the U.N. experts said in a statement. Letting the verdict stand would undermine freedom of religion in Indonesia, they said. “We urge the Government to overturn Mr. Purnama’s sentence on appeal or to extend to him whatever form of clemency may be available under Indonesian law so that he may be released from prison immediately,” the experts said.“Criminal laws that penalize blasphemy represent an unlawful restriction on freedom of expression, and disproportionately target persons belonging to religious minorities or traditional religions, non-believers and political dissidents,” they said. The joint statement was backed by the U.N. Special Rapporteurs on

freedom of religion or belief, Ahmed Shaheed, and on freedom of opinion and expression, David Kaye, and the Independent Expert on the promotion of a democratic and equitable international order, Alfred de Zayas.

Indonesian authorities were not immediately available to comment but immediately after the verdict Widodo urged all sides to respect the verdict as well as Purnama’s decision to appeal.(rtr)

BARCELONA - Ander Herrera attracted admiration from the last four Manchester United managers, from being man-marked by Alex Ferguson to being scouted by David Moyes and signed by Louis Van Gaal, but it is under Jose Mourinho that the little Spaniard has truly thrived. The Spain international pipped top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic and world record signing Paul Pogba to United’s Player of the Season award in his third campaign at the club, in which he has grown into one of Mourinho’s most loyal disciples. Originally brought to United for the passing ability and vision he showed at Athletic Bilbao, Herrera has transformed into a defensive leader in midfield and will be responsible for shutting out Ajax in Wednesday’s Europa League final. It will be his second appearance in a Europa League final after losing the 2012 edition with Athletic to Atletico Madrid 3-0 after a thrilling run to the showpiece that included beating United 5-3 on aggregate in the last 16. Herrera had been one of the stars of the 3-2 win at Old Trafford in the first leg, leading Alex Ferguson to get Park Ji- Sung to man-mark him in the second leg, which he later said he understood as Ferguson’s highest compliment. Yet Herrera found himself playing the role of destroyer in United’s 2-0 win over Chelsea in April, taking Eden Hazard out of the game to perfection as well as assisting Marcus Rashford’s opener before scoring the second. That match-winning display was his best performance in a role he has grown into during the season and relished. “The manager had a conversation and he told me I was going to be an important player if I do what he wanted me to do,” Herrera said in an interview with ESPN. “I am always open to learning. I am always open to adapting myself to a new role and a new position. So I say to myself, if I want to play every game for Manchester United, which is my dream, I have to do something else for the club and the manager. “I think we have a good understanding between the manager and myself. AMSTERDAM - Ajax Amsterdam can expect a big windfall from its Europa League final against Manchester United on Wednesday but any thought it could prove the start of a dynasty to rival their all-conquering team of the 1970s will be quashed by contemporary reality. Success in reaching a first European club competition final in 21 years has revitalised the Ajax brand. “It is probably the biggest compliment of this year’s run to the final that Europe is again talking about Ajax,” said club marketing director Edwin van der Sar, who kept goal for both Manchester United and Ajax. But the reality for the Dutch club - with an operating budget of 85 million euros – over the last decades has been their role as a producer, and then swift seller, of talent.

The shop window of the Europa League final in Stockholm means Ajax can expect added interest in a bevy of players already earmarked for the exit door at lucrative profit for the Amsterdam club. Captain Davy Klaassen has a price tag of some 25 million euros and is set for a move to Everton, according to Dutch media. Ronald Koeman was in the stands for Ajax’s semifinal success over Olympique Lyonnais and with 20 goals in 49 games this season, Klaassen, a 24-year-old midfielder, has made a persuasive case for himself. Ajax’s team for the final cost just 19.6 million euros to assemble with midfielder Hakim Ziyech alone costing 11 million last August. Five of the expected starting line-up on Wednesday came through the club academy without any transfer fee outlay, including 17-year-old

centre-back Matthis de Ligt, Lasse Schone and Kenny Tete. None of them are expected to stay long as Ajax adhere to a nominal salary cap of some 40,000 euros per week. “In the past, only the best players went but now Ajax develops players until a sack of money is laid down in front of them and then the player is gone,” former defender Sonny Silooy said in De Volkskrant on Monday.
