Avicii, the stage name of Tim Bergling, was not a first-out-the-door pioneer of electronic dance music -or EDM -- a scene that has exploded since the turn of the century and last year was worth $7.4 billion, according to a study by the industry’s International Music Summit in Ibiza. But Avicii both showed the mainstream possibilities of EDM -- and, by the end of his short life, had already become a sage elder who cautioned about the artistic and commercial overreach of the music. But for the people who live along the polluted river, it is not just the environmental impact that worries them, health problems have affected children and
families. The riverside town of Majalaya is located about 170km from Jakarta, and less than 50km away from the source of Citarum River in the sub-district of Kertasari. Called “dollar city” in its heyday, Majalaya was able to supply up to 40 per cent of Indonesia’s textile needs, making it a major centre for Indonesia’s textile industry. And it is those textile factories which are among the worst polluters of the Citarum. Elements of the Environment (ELINGAN), a local NGO, esti-
mates that around 1,500 factories dump about 280 tonnes of toxic waste per day into Citarium River. It is not uncommon to see the water turn from murky brown to black, sometimes even red and blue from chemical colouring, before returning to brown again further downstream. “Why are these industries dumping toxic waste?” said Deni Riswandani, an activist from ELINGAN. “According to the regulations for operating industries, it is mandatory for every industry to run a
wastewater treatment plant. But the fact is, many industries bypass this and do not dispose of their waste through a wastewater treatment plant but instead, they dump it straight into the river.” Continued to page 6

Celukan Bawang steam-fueled power plant becomes a dilemma
“Actually, the first Celukan Bawang power plant has been in the Regional General Electrical Power Plan (RUKD) in 2004. Indeed it must have generator one because systematically Bali must be supported by several generators. It is in contrast to countries in Europe that are even ready to pay expensively for electricity from new renewable energy for the sake of environment. It happens because Europe has been established in terms of electricity so it is safe in terms of supply. Their citizens switch to renewable energy simply because they appreciate to the environment. “In Indonesia, the new renewable energy cannot become the main supply. Technologically, it remains difficult if we rely solely on
the new renewable energy. It will be very high cost,” she explained. On that account, Giriantari continued that possible solution for Bali’s future electricity supply is the Java-Bali Crossing (JBC). If the project has accomplished, there will be 1,000 MW of electricity coming into Bali from Java. “It’s the same as building other four generators similar to those in Celukan Bawang. Where should we put it? In the corners of Bali, it is pity on our Bali Island,” he said. Chairman of the Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI), Tulus Abadi, said the construction of steam-fueled power plants in Bali is not in line with the concept of Bali Clean and Green. Besides, it will bring in a negative campaign for tourism sector.
General Manager of PLN Bali Distribution, Nyoman Suwarjoni Astawa, said that Bali’s highest peak load is 862 MW. The current power supply amounts to 1,200 MW. When talking about the potential of new renewable energy generator, the highest electricity produced is 300 MW by three solar power plants (PLTS). Thus, each solar power plant in Negara, Amlapura and Kubu produces 100 MW only. Meanwhile, the other new renewable energy power plants, such as the micro-hydro power plant (PLTM) averagely generates electricity of not more than 10 MW, wind power plant (PLTB) in Nusa Penida only produces 20 MW, and geothermal power plant (PLTP) in Bedugul produces 65 MW. Guided natural history walks take you through the Monteverde Reserve which is home to jaguars and pumas. There’s also a zip-line tour of the reserve where you look down on mammals such as the fuzzy martilla. But the best way to see the lush cloud forest and its inhabitants is by walking on hanging bridges which take you alongside the canopy of trees. Surfs Up – Head to the Beach
The Pacific Coast has some beautiful beaches with conditions that offer some of the best surfing in this part of the world. Towns such as Nosara are packed with bright driftwood signs pointing to surf shacks and sunset bars. Beaches have an abandoned RobinsonCrusoe feel with rickety shelters constructed from wood and sticks with covers of dried palm leaves. There are some upmarket resorts in this part of the country with Hollywood celebrities spotted sipping cocktails and admiring the views. Costa Rica also has a Caribbean coastline, which has a different atmosphere with a cultural mix of Afro Caribbean, Tico (the name Costa Ricans give themselves) and old hippy vibe. According to her, most waterfall attractions look ordinary, but in this location visitors can enjoy other rides along the journey to Cinta waterfall. “I’m so impressed and it is different as there is a place like a giant bird’s nest to take selfie, so the atmosphere turns beautiful and impressive,” she said. MANGUPURA — Badung district has prepared facility for students with special needs. Related to inclusion schools accommodating children with special needs, the subject matter is the same as that of public school. Moreover, the teacher is from general teacher giving the same treatment as normal children. Nevertheless, the qualified students to be accepted at the school with special needs should not have too low IQ level. “The students are restricted, where their IQ should not be too low. If surpassing the qualification, they must be educated in the disabled schools,” said the Head of the Badung Education Agency, I Ketut Widia Astika, on Saturday (Apr. 21). Later, said Widia Astika, it will need psychologist and then the infrastructure and facilities must also be adjusted. Currently, it has been indeed prepared in each subdistrict. For the time being, the most students are at SDN 11 Jimbaran and
SDN 3 Sempidi elementary school. “The most students are in South Kuta and Mengwi subdistrict, while other subdistricts are still unavailable,” he said. Indeed it needs the addition of psychologist because they need a rather special handling. Currently, his agency has also conducted recruitment of psychologists to be placed in schools that implement inclusive schools. Pursuing the making of mask handicraft
GIANYAR — Doing art creativities have become a way of life to almost all residents of Gianyar. On average, local community can carve mask in particular. I Nyoman Cita, for instance, is a mask craftsman from Puaya hamlet, Batuan, Sukawati. His specialty is making sacred masks such as that of barong, rangda, sanctified effigies and mask of drama dance.

His expertise to make sacred mask is handed down autodidactically by his father Jero Mangku Nyoman Jandra, 90. Moreover, since childhood he has often followed his parent to go around Bali when making masks. “Since junior high school, I have often joined my father to travel around Bali to make sacred mask,” he said when met on Wednesday (Apr. 18). Now, the man born on August 20, 1964 becomes the next generation. Moreover, the two sons of Nyoman Cita also automatically master the technique of making sacred masks. Both are now busy studying and pursuing their career. No doubt, many mystical things are experienced by Nyoman Cita when making a sacred mask. Nevertheless, he believed that it is a blessing and a gift of the Almighty God. “Such mystical thing must exist because it works in the sacred realm,” he said. When working on a sacred mask, he is never fixed with time. Making sacred masks should not be in a hurry. In addition, consulting the auspicious day to Brahmin priest is also important to start the work. “I do not want to do it haphazardly, but must follow each proper stage and process,” he explained. Pursuing in the world of religious art does not make him stuck in a narrow space. After the customary village medium assembly (MMDP) of Karangasem, it is now the turn of the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Karangasem. PHRI did not only ask the local customary village to make improvement, but also the Operations Management (OM) of Besakih must be evaluated. This domain belongs to Besakih customary village handled by Jro Bendesa or chief of customary village,” said Mangku Ngawit. Result of the meeting held by Besakih customary village and senior priest in Besakih Temple on Saturday (Apr. 21) decided to organize prayascita purificatory rite and apologetic bendu piduka ritual in Gelap Temple. Headman of Besakih, Jro Mangku Widiartha, also ensured the ritual to be held that morning. Spokesperson of Besakih OM, Gusti Mangku Bagus Kariawan, added the operations management has coordinated with pecalang or security guard of customary village. BUDAPEST - Tens of thousands of Hungarians took to the streets in Budapest for a second consecutive Saturday to protest against newly reelected Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The crowd, estimated at around 30,000 by a AFP photographer, marched through the city to a rally where speakers demanded a nonpartisan public media. Campaigning hard against immigration, the 54-year-old Orban’s overwhelming victory April 8 saw his Fidesz party secure around half the vote. But among criticisms regarding the fairness of the election, observers from the Organisation for Security and Co-operation said the campaign was marked by media bias. As part of sweeping reforms since he came into power in 2010, Orban has turned the public media channels into what his critics call “government mouthpieces”. Many of the demonstrators, most of whom were young, chanted “democracy” and brandished Hungarian and European Union flags. An organiser, Viktor Gyetvai, 20, told AFP the protest “was not going to change the system overnight” but was aimed at sparking a “civil movement” to challenge Orban. “These are first steps, a sign that there are many Hungarians who
want to live in a democracy, with independent institutions, and a free media,” said Gyetvai. More demonstrations will be held in provincial cities in coming weeks, he said. Last Saturday some 100,000 protestors held a protest in Budapest days after Orban’s win. The victory handed Orban his third consecutive two-thirds parliamentary majority and a legislative free rein for the next four years. Since then Orban has signalled an escalation of his long-running onslaught on non-governmental organisations (NGOs) linked to the liberal US billionaire George Soros. Orban accuses the Hungarianborn 87-year-old of plotting to destroy Europe though mass immigration. A pro-Orban newspaper recently published a list of some 200 “Soros mercenaries” that included staff at NGOs, universities and investigative journalism websites. A vote on a controversial “Stop Soros” package of bills targeting NGOs is likely to be among the first to pass through parliament after it convenes May 8.
The package apes similar laws in Russia and would slap taxes on foreign-funded NGOs that “support” illegal immigration. Under the proposals, foreigners deemed to support asylum seekers could be stopped from entering Hungary, NGO staff face being barred from approaching border areas and organisations will undergo “security tests”. ANTANANARIVO - One person died and 17 others were injured Saturday in clashes between Madagascar’s security forces and thousands of opposition activists protesting against new election laws ahead of a vote later this year in the restive island nation. Prime Minister Olivier Mahafaly Solonandrasana said in an address on state television that the country faced a “sad” day with the loss of a life during the demonstrations. “According to the official report, there is one death and 17 wounded,” he said. Earlier, Olivat Alison Aimee Rakoto, head of the public hospital HJRA in Antananarivo, had told AFP that they had attended to “17 wounded..., one of whom succumbed to his wounds”. He did not specify if the injured were protesters or police. The premier said an investigation had been launched “to shed light on the cause of this death”. “We must now get rid of our habits of looking for solutions through violence,” he said. Authorities had earlier in the week declared the protest illegal but opposition activists defied the order and forged ahead with the demonstration, which saw thousands throng a public square outside city hall in the capital of Antananarivo. Clashes erupted after police fired tear gas to try to disperse the protesters as the crowd grew and overwhelmed the security forces, occupying the square, an AFP reporter at the scene said. Some of the demonstrators reacted by hurling rocks at the officers. The opposition has accused the government of President Hery Rajaonarimampianina of wanting
to muzzle it through new electoral laws in the run-up to presidential and legislative elections due to be held in late November or December. The opposition claims that three new laws, adopted earlier this month, favour the ruling party and put in place obstacles to the disadvantage of opponents. Rajaonarimampianina is out of the country on official business, according to his office, which did not specify his location. “The message to the president of the republic who is out of the country, is that it would be good that you remain where you are,” opposition lawmaker Hanitriniaina Razafimanantsoa said. Elected in 2013, Rajaonarimampianina has not yet announced whether he will stand for re-election. But two former heads of state have already mooted runs: Marc Ravalomanana, who was president from 2002 to 2009, and Andry Rajoelina, who removed him during a coup. Both were barred from running in 2013 and their parties were behind Saturday’s protests. The Indian Ocean island nation endured several years of turmoil after Ravalomanana was ousted as president in the 2009 coup that led to the withdrawal of foreign investment and donor money. Turkey’s economy, the fastest growing in the G20 but haunted by an uncertain longterm outlook, is key to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s decision to call snap polls and will also be decisive for the outcome.
Turkey recorded stellar growth of 7.4 percent in 2017 but the data has failed to douse fears over the underlying health of the economy which is marked by double-digit inflation, a wide current account deficit, a weak currency and high corporate debt. The economy has generally been a trump card for Erdogan in his 15 years in power, with the Turkish strongman crediting himself with rescuing the country from the chaos that brought it to near financial meltdown in the 2000-2001 crisis. By bringing the polls forward one-and-a-half-years to June 24, Erdogan wants to snare another five years in power with the economy at its peak before any downturn sets in, analysts say. And with both unemployment and inflation at over 10 percent, Turkey’s opposition will also be looking to capitalise on nascent economic discontent at the polls. “There was no way to sustain this pace (of growth) until November 2019,” Atilla Yesilada, country advisor at Global Source Partners in Istanbul told AFP, adding that the economy was “going too fast for its own good.”

Charles Robertson, global chief economist at Renaissance Capital, argued that the problems in Turkey’s economy were not acute enough to cause Erdogan problems at the elections. “Unemployment remains at an acceptable level and as so many Turks keep some savings in foreign currency even lira weakness is not that painful for the middle classes,” he told AFP. - ‘Previous rallies short lived’ The Turkish lira had lost almost 10 percent of its value against the US dollar since the start of the year ahead of Erdogan’s election announcement, making it one of the worst performing emerging market currencies in the world. But his ending of uncertainty on snap polls -- the subject of speculation for months -- gave the lira one of its strongest rallies in recent times on Wednesday and it has
since kept most of its gains. Jackson of Capital Economics said he was “not sure this can be sustained”, given the size of the current account deficit which leaves Turkey dependent on foreign capital inflows that could slow and pressure the currency. Previous rallies of the currency when uncertainty was lifted “were short lived and the broad trend for the lira has been down”, he said. Up until 2013 there were fewer than 2 lira to the dollar but ahead of Erdogan’s announcement it topped 4 to the dollar for the first time. Keenly watched will be a meeting of Turkey’s central bank on Wednesday, with the nominally independent institution under relentless pressure from Erdogan to cut rates to boost growth but markets wanting a tighter policy to douse down inflation. “For the rally to get legs, the central bank should hike rates –but Erdogan is an obstacle to this,” said Robertson. Experts take samples from site of alleged Syria gas attack BEIRUT - Investigators from the global chemical arms watchdog collected samples Saturday from the site of a suspected gas attack in Syria two weeks ago, after security concerns delayed their probe. Gruesome footage of the alleged toxic attack on April 7 in the town of Douma, just outside Damascus, horrified the world and prompted unprecedented Western strikes on Syrian military installations. Just hours after the joint missile strikes, a team from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) arrived in Syria to investigate the claims. But they had been unable to access Douma itself, which fell from rebel hands into joint Syrian and Russian control after the suspected chemical attack. United Nations security experts deployed to the town on Tuesday to check it was safe, but were forced
to pull out after an explosion went off and they were shot at. Investigators finally collected evidence from the site for the first time on Saturday, the OPCW said. “The samples collected will be transported to the OPCW Laboratory in Rijswijk and then dispatched for analysis to the OPCW’s designated labs,” the body said in a statement, adding it could plan another visit. Russia’s foreign ministry had earlier announced the inspectors reached Douma after guarantees by Syria and its own forces, and said it expected them to carry out an “impartial investigation”. Moscow, a key ally of President Bashar al-Assad, has said its own probe into the events in Douma found no traces of chemical use. Assad’s government, too, has repeatedly denied using toxic weapons, and accused the West of “fabricating” the claim to justify bombing Syria. (afp)

More than a thousand people, including dozens of tourists from neighbouring Malaysia, jeered and screamed abuse at the group of three men and five women as they were flogged on a stage outside a mosque in the capital Banda Aceh. Some snapped pictures as a hooded figure rained down lashes from a rattan cane on their backs, with each getting between 11 and 22 strokes. The couples were whipped for showing affection in public, while two of the women were suspected sex workers, of-
ficials said. Aceh is the only province in the world’s most populous Muslimmajority country that imposes Islamic law. Flogging is a common punishment for a range of offences -- from gambling, to drinking alcohol to having gay sex or relations outside of marriage. The conservative region on the northern tip of Sumatra island passed a regulation a week ago that would see criminals whipped only behind prison walls. It was not clear when the new rule would come into effect. The move was in response to a wave of international criticism over the practice, which has included flogging members of the vulnerable LGBT community and, in some cases, non-Muslims. Iran threatens to ‘vigorously’ resume enrichment if US quits deal
NEW YORK - Iran warned Saturday it is ready to “vigorously” resume nuclear enrichment if the United States ditches the 2015 nuclear deal, and said further “drastic measures” are being considered in response to a US exit. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told reporters in New York that Iran is not seeking to acquire a nuclear bomb, but that its “probable” response to a US withdrawal would be to restart production of enriched uranium -- a key bomb-making ingredient. “America never should have feared Iran producing a nuclear bomb, but we will pursue vigorously our nuclear enrichment,” added Zarif, who is in the United States to attend a UN meeting on sustaining peace. US President Donald Trump has set a May 12 deadline for the Europeans to “fix” the 2015 agreement that provides for curbs to Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for relief from financial sanctions. Zarif’s comments marked a further hardening of rhetoric following a warning earlier this month from
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani that Washington would “regret” withdrawing from the nuclear deal, and that Iran would respond within a week if it did. The fate of the Iran deal will be a key issue during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Washington beginning Monday, followed by talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Washington on Friday. Zarif said the European leaders must press Trump to stick to the deal if the United States “intends to maintain any credibility in the international community” and to abide by it, “rather than demand more.” The foreign minister also warned against offering any concessions to Trump. “To try to appease the president, I think, would be an exercise in futility,” he said. The group landed in Aceh province on Sumatra island, just weeks after dozens of the persecuted Muslim minority from Myanmar came ashore in neighbouring Malaysia. All appeared to be in good condition, according to local police chief Riza Yulianto, who added that it was not clear how long they had been at sea. “Thank God they’re all healthy even though a few are just children,” he told AFP. “We have given them food and we are thoroughly checking their health one by one.” It has been rare for Rohingya migrants to attempt the sea routes south since Thai authorities clamped down on regional trafficking networks in 2015, sparking a crisis across Southeast Asia as large numbers were abandoned at sea. Buddhist Myanmar launched a new crackdown last year that forced about 700,000 members of the Muslim minority to flee to Bangladesh. This month, a group including two Rohingya men, aged 28 and 33, a 20-year-old woman, a 15-year-old girl and an eight-year old boy were spotted in a small boat off the coast of southern Thailand and Myanmar, some 325 kilometres (176 miles) from Aceh. Local Indonesian fishermen took them back to Aceh where they were later taken into custody by immigration officials. The group said they had been travelling with two dozen other Rohingya but got separated and were stranded at sea for about 20 days. They had gotten lost with five others who later starved to death and their bodies were thrown overboard, officials said at the time. In 2015, hundreds of Rohingya came ashore in Aceh, where they were welcomed in the staunchly conservative Islamic province. Indonesia tends to accept asylum seekers but they are usually barred from working and often spend years in immigration centres. (afp)

Experts take samples from site of alleged Syria gas attack BEIRUT - Investigators from the global chemical arms watchdog collected samples Saturday from the site of a suspected gas attack in Syria two weeks ago, after security concerns delayed their probe. Gruesome footage of the alleged toxic attack on April 7 in the town of Douma, just outside Damascus, horrified the world and prompted unprecedented Western strikes on Syrian military installations. Just hours after the joint missile strikes, a team from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) arrived in Syria to investigate the claims. But they had been unable to access Douma itself, which fell from rebel hands into joint Syrian and Russian control after the suspected chemical attack. United Nations security experts deployed to the town on Tuesday to check it was safe, but were forced
to pull out after an explosion went off and they were shot at. Investigators finally collected evidence from the site for the first time on Saturday, the OPCW said. “The samples collected will be transported to the OPCW Laboratory in Rijswijk and then dispatched for analysis to the OPCW’s designated labs,” the body said in a statement, adding it could plan another visit. Russia’s foreign ministry had earlier announced the inspectors reached Douma after guarantees by Syria and its own forces, and said it expected them to carry out an “impartial investigation”. Moscow, a key ally of President Bashar al-Assad, has said its own probe into the events in Douma found no traces of chemical use. Assad’s government, too, has repeatedly denied using toxic weapons, and accused the West of “fabricating” the claim to justify bombing Syria. (afp)

More than a thousand people, including dozens of tourists from neighbouring Malaysia, jeered and screamed abuse at the group of three men and five women as they were flogged on a stage outside a mosque in the capital Banda Aceh. Some snapped pictures as a hooded figure rained down lashes from a rattan cane on their backs, with each getting between 11 and 22 strokes. The couples were whipped for showing affection in public, while two of the women were suspected sex workers, of-
ficials said. Aceh is the only province in the world’s most populous Muslimmajority country that imposes Islamic law. Flogging is a common punishment for a range of offences -- from gambling, to drinking alcohol to having gay sex or relations outside of marriage. The conservative region on the northern tip of Sumatra island passed a regulation a week ago that would see criminals whipped only behind prison walls. It was not clear when the new rule would come into effect. Iran threatens to ‘vigorously’ resume enrichment if US quits deal
NEW YORK - Iran warned Saturday it is ready to “vigorously” resume nuclear enrichment if the United States ditches the 2015 nuclear deal, and said further “drastic measures” are being considered in response to a US exit. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told reporters in New York that Iran is not seeking to acquire a nuclear bomb, but that its “probable” response to a US withdrawal would be to restart production of enriched uranium -- a key bomb-making ingredient. “America never should have feared Iran producing a nuclear bomb, but we will pursue vigorously our nuclear enrichment,” added Zarif, who is in the United States to attend a UN meeting on sustaining peace. US President Donald Trump has set a May 12 deadline for the Europeans to “fix” the 2015 agreement that provides for curbs to Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for relief from financial sanctions. Zarif’s comments marked a further hardening of rhetoric following a warning earlier this month from
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani that Washington would “regret” withdrawing from the nuclear deal, and that Iran would respond within a week if it did. The fate of the Iran deal will be a key issue during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Washington beginning Monday, followed by talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Washington on Friday. Turkey’s economy, the fastest growing in the G20 but haunted by an uncertain longterm outlook, is key to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s decision to call snap polls and will also be decisive for the outcome.
Turkey recorded stellar growth of 7.4 percent in 2017 but the data has failed to douse fears over the underlying health of the economy which is marked by double-digit inflation, a wide current account deficit, a weak currency and high corporate debt. The economy has generally been a trump card for Erdogan in his 15 years in power, with the Turkish strongman crediting himself with rescuing the country from the chaos that brought it to near financial meltdown in the 2000-2001 crisis. By bringing the polls forward one-and-a-half-years to June 24, Erdogan wants to snare another five years in power with the economy at its peak before any downturn sets in, analysts say. And with both unemployment and inflation at over 10 percent, Turkey’s opposition will also be looking to capitalise on nascent economic discontent at the polls. “There was no way to sustain this pace (of growth) until November 2019,” Atilla Yesilada, country advisor at Global Source Partners in Istanbul told AFP, adding that the economy was “going too fast for its own good.”

Charles Robertson, global chief economist at Renaissance Capital, argued that the problems in Turkey’s economy were not acute enough to cause Erdogan problems at the elections. “Unemployment remains at an acceptable level and as so many Turks keep some savings in foreign currency even lira weakness is not that painful for the middle classes,” he told AFP. - ‘Previous rallies short lived’ The Turkish lira had lost almost 10 percent of its value against the US dollar since the start of the year ahead of Erdogan’s election announcement, making it one of the worst performing emerging market currencies in the world. But his ending of uncertainty on snap polls -- the subject of speculation for months -- gave the lira one of its strongest rallies in recent times on Wednesday and it has
since kept most of its gains. Jackson of Capital Economics said he was “not sure this can be sustained”, given the size of the current account deficit which leaves Turkey dependent on foreign capital inflows that could slow and pressure the currency. Previous rallies of the currency when uncertainty was lifted “were short lived and the broad trend for the lira has been down”, he said. Up until 2013 there were fewer than 2 lira to the dollar but ahead of Erdogan’s announcement it topped 4 to the dollar for the first time. Keenly watched will be a meeting of Turkey’s central bank on Wednesday, with the nominally independent institution under relentless pressure from Erdogan to cut rates to boost growth but markets wanting a tighter policy to douse down inflation. “For the rally to get legs, the central bank should hike rates –but Erdogan is an obstacle to this,” said Robertson. After the customary village medium assembly (MMDP) of Karangasem, it is now the turn of the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Karangasem. PHRI did not only ask the local customary village to make improvement, but also the Operations Management (OM) of Besakih must be evaluated. Chairman of PHRI Karangasem, I Wayan Tama, said on Friday (Apr. 20) that discretion of foreign tourist to get in and out of Besakih Temple to the sitting on padmasana indicates there is something that needs improving from the performance of Besakih OM. BUDAPEST - Tens of thousands of Hungarians took to the streets in Budapest for a second consecutive Saturday to protest against newly reelected Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The crowd, estimated at around 30,000 by a AFP photographer, marched through the city to a rally where speakers demanded a nonpartisan public media. Campaigning hard against immigration, the 54-year-old Orban’s overwhelming victory April 8 saw his Fidesz party secure around half the vote. But among criticisms regarding the fairness of the election, observers from the Organisation for Security and Co-operation said the campaign was marked by media bias. As part of sweeping reforms since he came into power in 2010, Orban has turned the public media channels into what his critics call “government mouthpieces”. Many of the demonstrators, most of whom were young, chanted “democracy” and brandished Hungarian and European Union flags. An organiser, Viktor Gyetvai, 20, told AFP the protest “was not going to change the system overnight” but was aimed at sparking a “civil movement” to challenge Orban. “These are first steps, a sign that there are many Hungarians who
want to live in a democracy, with independent institutions, and a free media,” said Gyetvai. More demonstrations will be held in provincial cities in coming weeks, he said. Last Saturday some 100,000 protestors held a protest in Budapest days after Orban’s win. The victory handed Orban his third consecutive two-thirds parliamentary majority and a legislative free rein for the next four years. Since then Orban has signalled an escalation of his long-running onslaught on non-governmental organisations (NGOs) linked to the liberal US billionaire George Soros. Orban accuses the Hungarianborn 87-year-old of plotting to destroy Europe though mass immigration. A pro-Orban newspaper recently published a list of some 200 “Soros mercenaries” that included staff at NGOs, universities and investigative journalism websites. A vote on a controversial “Stop Soros” package of bills targeting NGOs is likely to be among the first to pass through parliament after it convenes May 8.

ANTANANARIVO - One person died and 17 others were injured Saturday in clashes between Madagascar’s security forces and thousands of opposition activists protesting against new election laws ahead of a vote later this year in the restive island nation. Prime Minister Olivier Mahafaly Solonandrasana said in an address on state television that the country faced a “sad” day with the loss of a life during the demonstrations. “According to the official report, there is one death and 17 wounded,” he said. Earlier, Olivat Alison Aimee Rakoto, head of the public hospital HJRA in Antananarivo, had told AFP that they had attended to “17 wounded..., one of whom succumbed to his wounds”. He did not specify if the injured were protesters or police. The premier said an investigation had been launched “to shed light on the cause of this death”. “We must now get rid of our habits of looking for solutions through violence,” he said. Authorities had earlier in the week declared the protest illegal but opposition activists defied the order and forged ahead with the demonstration, which saw thousands throng a public square outside city hall in the capital of Antananarivo. Clashes erupted after police fired tear gas to try to disperse the protesters as the crowd grew and overwhelmed the security forces, occupying the square, an AFP reporter at the scene said. Some of the demonstrators reacted by hurling rocks at the officers. The opposition has accused the government of President Hery Rajaonarimampianina of wanting
to muzzle it through new electoral laws in the run-up to presidential and legislative elections due to be held in late November or December. The opposition claims that three new laws, adopted earlier this month, favour the ruling party and put in place obstacles to the disadvantage of opponents. Rajaonarimampianina is out of the country on official business, according to his office, which did not specify his location. “The message to the president of the republic who is out of the country, is that it would be good that you remain where you are,” opposition lawmaker Hanitriniaina Razafimanantsoa said. Elected in 2013, Rajaonarimampianina has not yet announced whether he will stand for re-election. But two former heads of state have already mooted runs: Marc Ravalomanana, who was president from 2002 to 2009, and Andry Rajoelina, who removed him during a coup. Both were barred from running in 2013 and their parties were behind Saturday’s protests. The Indian Ocean island nation endured several years of turmoil after Ravalomanana was ousted as president in the 2009 coup that led to the withdrawal of foreign investment and donor money. Ravalomanana was overthrown following an army mutiny that allowed Rajoelina -- then Antananarivo mayor -- to become the country’s unelected transition president until 2014. Celukan Bawang steam-fueled power plant becomes a dilemma
“Actually, the first Celukan Bawang power plant has been in the Regional General Electrical Power Plan (RUKD) in 2004. Technologically, it remains difficult if we rely solely on
the new renewable energy. It will be very high cost,” she explained. On that account, Giriantari continued that possible solution for Bali’s future electricity supply is the Java-Bali Crossing (JBC). If the project has accomplished, there will be 1,000 MW of electricity coming into Bali from Java. “It’s the same as building other four generators similar to those in Celukan Bawang. Where should we put it? In the corners of Bali, it is pity on our Bali Island,” he said. Chairman of the Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI), Tulus Abadi, said the construction of steam-fueled power plants in Bali is not in line with the concept of Bali Clean and Green. Besides, it will bring in a negative campaign for tourism sector.
General Manager of PLN Bali Distribution, Nyoman Suwarjoni Astawa, said that Bali’s highest peak load is 862 MW. The current power supply amounts to 1,200 MW. When talking about the potential of new renewable energy generator, the highest electricity produced is 300 MW by three solar power plants (PLTS). Thus, each solar power plant in Negara, Amlapura and Kubu produces 100 MW only. Meanwhile, the other new renewable energy power plants, such as the micro-hydro power plant (PLTM) averagely generates electricity of not more than 10 MW, wind power plant (PLTB) in Nusa Penida only produces 20 MW, and geothermal power plant (PLTP) in Bedugul produces 65 MW. Avicii death a coming-of-age in electronic music boom

The Swedish DJ’s death Friday at age 28 marks a symbolic coming-ofage for a genre that remains resolutely youthful, with the first electronic superstar to die near his prime. Avicii, the stage name of Tim Bergling, was not a first-out-the-door pioneer of electronic dance music -or EDM -- a scene that has exploded since the turn of the century and last year was worth $7.4 billion, according to a study by the industry’s International Music Summit in Ibiza. But Avicii both showed the mainstream possibilities of EDM -- and, by the end of his short life, had already become a sage elder who cautioned about the artistic and commercial overreach of the music. Avicii came to define the new age of radio-friendly EDM in 2011 with “Levels,” which entered the top 10 across Europe with its sample of soul great Etta James in between syn-

He retired from touring in 2016 as he suffered health problems including acute pancreatitis, triggered in part by excessive drinking. Avicii, who acknowledged his problems in the sole lyric to the song “Alcoholic,” died while on vacation in Oman. The cause remained unclear, although police sources in the Gulf sultanate did not suspect foul play. The electronic music world has been struck by few other deaths.

But perhaps his most influential moment came in 2013 when he headlined the Ultra Music Festival in Miami. A year after he invited Madonna as a surprise stage guest, Avicii befuddled a crowd of ravers by bringing out a bluegrass band with a banjo for his soon-to-behit “Wake Me Up.” In an interview shortly afterward, Avicii warned that EDM was moving too quickly into a sound too hard and unmelodious, saying that audiences would soon tire of it. “Since it got so big in America the past couple of years, dance music is taking over everywhere,” Avicii told

Spanning nearly 300km, it is the longest river in Indonesia’s most populous province. It also supplies the provincial capital of Bandung as well as the country’s capital Jakarta with piped water. The water is used to sustain fish
farms, irrigate 400,000 hectares of paddy fields and fill reservoirs that generate about two gigawatts of hydropower, making it one of Indonesia’s most strategic river basins. But for the people who live along the polluted river, it is not just the environmental impact that worries them, health problems have affected children and
families. The riverside town of Majalaya is located about 170km from Jakarta, and less than 50km away from the source of Citarum River in the sub-district of Kertasari. Called “dollar city” in its heyday, Majalaya was able to supply up to 40 per cent of Indonesia’s textile needs, making it a major centre for Indonesia’s textile industry. And it is those textile factories which are among the worst polluters of the Citarum. Elements of the Environment (ELINGAN), a local NGO, esti-
mates that around 1,500 factories dump about 280 tonnes of toxic waste per day into Citarium River. It is not uncommon to see the water turn from murky brown to black, sometimes even red and blue from chemical colouring, before returning to brown again further downstream. “Why are these industries dumping toxic waste?” said Deni Riswandani, an activist from ELINGAN. “According to the regulations for operating industries, it is mandatory for every industry to run a
wastewater treatment plant. But the fact is, many industries bypass this and do not dispose of their waste through a wastewater treatment plant but instead, they dump it straight into the river.” Continued to page 6

After retreating to the studio, he last year released an EP whose singles included “Lonely Together” featuring singer Rita Ora -- Avicii’s soundscape accentuating a tight pop song with none of the booming synthesizers of EDM anthems. But there are limited signs of an imminent bubble in EDM. Calvin Harris, the top-paid DJ, earned $48.5 million last year, according to an estimate by Forbes, and the rise of streaming subscriptions has helped bolster the industry’s overall earnings. Kygo, another leading DJ, closed his set Friday at the Coachella festival in California with a tribute to Avicii, to whom he credited his decision to pursue electronic music. “I know he’s inspired millions of other producers out there,” Kygo said.
