Alan Cumming’s 1-man ‘Macbeth’ stunning Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK — It’s hard enough for a couple to simulate sex onstage in front of 1,000 people. Now put them in a Shakespeare tragedy. OK, now to make it really hard: Remove one of the actors. That’s what you get in one of many astounding scenes at the new Broadway version of “Macbeth” — all the major roles are being done by Alan Cumming, which means a bed scene in which his Lady Macbeth seduces her husband while persuading him to kill the king. In the scene, Cumming, who won a 1998 Tony Award in Sam Mendes’ revival of “Cabaret,” redefines the notion of self-love. Half-dressed, he flips on a bed multiple times to alternate the parts, purring suggestively as the lady and then more lustful as the man. “Screw your courage to the sticking-place,” she teases him.

If it’s not clear by now, what Cumming is doing at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre is delivering a tour-de-force that redefines the term. In a truncated version of the play that clocks in at less than two hours, Cumming is both Macbeths, the three witches, Macduff, Duncan, Malcolm, Banquo and a half dozen others. Plus, he not only plays all the major Shakespeare roles, he also does the whole thing as a deranged mental patient. The show, directed by John Tiffany and Andrew Goldberg, has had sold-out runs at both the National Theatre of Scotland and the Lincoln Center Festival last year. It has matured since the festival,

now sporting more special effects, more blood and a stronger attempt to differentiate the various voices of the play, which had been a problem before. While there is no doubt about Cumming’s ability — he cowers, he acts menacing, he strips down, he leaps in and out of a full bathtub and smears himself in gore — there is a feeling that while this is an act of Olympic skill, it’s also partly a freak show. Cumming at first appears as a patient who has undergone some sort of trauma as he’s being processed into a white-tiled mental hospital. The plot of “Macbeth” is sort of a schizophrenic nightmare. Using a mental patient as the framing device makes intuitive sense for “Macbeth” since the play is filled with visions — “Is this a dagger which I see before me?” — and references to addled brains.

A small tornado happened on Monday, April 22, in Pulau Ayu and Pulau Adi Street, Denpasar. Because of the disaster, some houses were damaged and two shrined belong to Made Dwi Arya and another one in Puala Adi Street were collapsed.

One of the locals, Putu Suadnyana said that the tornado happened at 4 pm. It was happened suddenly and brief. There was no heavy rain but suddenly very strong wind was coming from the east and west and the same time and forming a small tornado. “At that time, a few of the roofs were shattered,” he added. Meanwhile, Made Dwi Aryana said that when the tornado came, all of the family

members directly took cover inside the house. They were terrified because the wind was very strong and they were afraid thing would fall on them. “There was a huge sound and when we checked it, the shrines were collapsed,” he said. The street is filled with damage roofs and the locals in the area are started to clean it. The damage houses are being fixed by the owners. “We fix it right away

because we afraid there will be rain in the next few days,” said the locals in the area. The Head of Denpasar Disaster handling department (BPBD) Made Sudana Satigraha said that the department still determining the loss after the disaster. “We still carry out detail inspection so we cannot determine the damage yet,” he added.(kmb21)

A robbery case occurred again in the jurisdiction of Denpasar Metro Police. The house belonging to a retired official of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Ngurah Gede, 80, on Jalan Suli No. 39 Denpasar was broken in by a robber, Thursday dawn (Apr 18). The perpetrator pointed a knife on the victim. As a result, a number of valuables belonging to the victim could be depleted. Meanwhile, the case had been reported to Denpasar Metro Police to be followed up. Information at police station on Sunday (Apr 21) said the robbery was committed by a perpetrator lasting fairly fast because only in a few minutes it managed to deplete the properties of the victim. “At that time, the victim was sleeping with his family. Suddenly the victim saw a stranger at his home at 03:00 a.m.,” said a source at police station last Sunday. Once the action was caught, the perpetrator pointed a knife to the victim. The perpetrator without a facial veil threatened the victim. If giving a resistance, the perpetrator did not hesitate to kill him. Under the threat with a knife, the victim could not do much. “The victim was asked to show where his valuables were stored,” he said while asking not to publish his name. With fear, the victim then showed where his valuables were kept. The perpetrator took all the valuables of victim at ease such as earrings,

ring and others. Not only that, the perpetrator also looted his cash worth IDR 3,700,000. “The total losses suffered by the victim valued at IDR 10 million. Meanwhile, this case had been reported on Saturday (Apr 20) to Denpasar Metro Police,” he said. Having received the report on the robbery action, police officers immediately came down to location to investigate the crime scene. Allegedly, the perpetrator entered the victim’s house by breaking in the window on the second floor. After getting in, the perpetrator went down to the first floor. Well, at that time the victim caught the perpetrator so that the latter then pointed a knife. “It’s not a robbery, but a thief,” said Chief of Criminal Detective Unit of Denpasar Metro Police, Ambariyadi Wijaya, when asked for his confirmation last Sunday. Four poor people deceived by broker Amlapura (Bali Post)—

Lured to get cheap home program (PRM), four victims of poor people immediately submitted the requested pre-payment by perpetrator alleged to be a broker of the program in 2010. Unfortunately, the promised affordable housing has not been realized so far. Afterward, the four poor people from Ujung Desa hamlet realized to have been deceived. Through hamlet chief named Madsin, 50, the four victims reported the case to Karangasem Police. Spokesperson of Karangasem Police, Ketut Pasek Redita, with permission from Karangasem Police Chief, Sunday (Apr 21), confirmed in Karangasem if the officers had received the report of victims. As being delivered, Lalu Madsin, the hamlet chief of Ujung Desa Muslim, had received the complaint from residents on Friday afternoon (Apr 19). The four victims deceived by the broker of cheap home program were Mahmudin, 33, farmer (Sasak ethnic); Muhidin, 37; Muh Suhami, 37, farmer; and Lalu Mahrum, 23. The four people were categorized to be poor with livelihood as farmer or fisherman and in 2010 were visited the perpetrator with

initial Pa, 60, a Javanese living on Jalan Pesagi Ujung Desa. The perpetrator promised a low-cost housing program with a pre-payment requirement worth IDR 5.5 million. The four victims having inappropriate housing were immediately tempted and willing to give a pre-payment whose amount varied. Unluckily, after three years and so far the promised housing was never realized. The victims suffered a loss worth IDR 18.5 million. Having realized to have been deceived by the perpetrator, the victims reported the case to hamlet chief Lalu Madsin. Such a report was then submitted directly to Karangasem Police. Spokesperson of Karangasem Police, Pasek Redita, said the report had been received. The officers further followed up the report by asking for information from the victims and conducting more in-depth investigation in order to uncover the fraud crime report. Based on the existing data, Karangasem still had around 33,000 poor households. Even, hundreds of them were estimated to be a beggar. Of that amount, even 11,000 more were reported to have not owned an appropriate housing. (013)

Regent Agung Bharata revealed the matter amidst the opening of painting exhibition entitled ‘Space of Time’ held by the faculty staff, students, and alumni of the Department of Art Education, Ganesha Education University (Undiksha) Singaraja in Neka Museum Ubud, Sunday (Apr 21). The free transport policy was made because of his concerns about the decline in the quality of art if without being coupled with the understanding on the real meaning of the art and culture existing in the museums. “I do not worry about the art going extinct, but what I worry about is the degrading quality,” said the Regent Agung Bharata. Free transport was expected to motivate schools to plan a museum visit in accordance with the school subject. Free transport was emphasized on kindergarten, elementary and junior high school. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — Future World Cup draws will be fairer to smaller nations, eliminating the scheduling disparity highlighted at the 2011 tournament in New Zealand, International Rugby Board chief executive Brett Gosper said Monday. Damaged road, Angseri hot spring attraction left by visitors Tabanan (Bali Post)—

Damage to road infrastructure in Tabanan begins to have an impact on tourism management. Due to damaged road, the hot spring tourist attractions at Angseri hamlet, Angseri village, Baturiti, is left by visitors. Since the past two years, tourist arrival has dropped sharply. This natural attraction was opened in 2007. Unluckily, condition of the road to the location is destroyed because it is never touched by project so that the damage is getting worse. The worst condition has occurred within the past three years. Almost along the road section has potholes and flakes off. “This is our problem. Due to damaged road, tourist arrival continues to decline,” said the operator of Angseri hot spring, Made Wirya, Sunday (Apr 21). According to Wirya, the damaged road occurred along around 4 km. It was the main road access connecting Angseri village to Senganan and Jatiluwih international tourist area. Such damaged road had been going on nearly for 10 years. However, it had not been repaired yet. The condition was exacerbated by the steep position of the road so that it was passed

through by water in rainy season. “Have a look, all the asphalt layers have run thin, now it only leaves rocks and holes,” he complained. Such condition caused many tourists reluctant to visit the hot spring at Angseri whereas when the road was not as bad as this time the number of tourist arrival was quite good. Within a day, the visit could reach 200-400 people, especially on weekend and holiday season. Since the road was getting worse, the number of visit dropped dramatically. “Last year, the total tourist arrival only reached about 5,000 people. Such amount was smaller compared to previous years,” complained Wirya. Most visitors coming to Angseri were domestic tourists from Bali and Java, while the remaining was foreign tourist. Wirya added that many tour guides

complained about the condition of road to Angseri. As a result, they were reluctant to bring guests to the tourist attraction whereas many tourists were tempted by the authenticity of local nature at Angseri. In addition to hot spring, this region also offered a natural rice field and bamboo forest. Related to the condition, the operator had attempted to propose a road repair for several times through the village. Unfortunately, the result was still zero. “Until now, there has been no sign if the road will be repaired,” he said. Such tourist attraction actually had become one of the income sources for Angseri village because most admission fees were paid to the village. Local residents could also earn a fortune from the tourist activities. He added that Angseri tourist area was originally managed by the village. To boost the revenue, the management was then transferred to community group working with the village authority. In other words, after the completion of the 20 kV submarine cables from Pering Beach Gianyar to Nusa Lembongan along approximately 17 kilometers, the diesel-fired power plant at Kutampi Nusa Penida providing the electricity to three sister islands of Bali namely Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan was no longer operated. “The submarine cables have been operating since April 8, 2013 with an average load of 2.8 MW (megawatts) to supply the power to Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan,” said Mastika. He said the construction of such submarine cables had been through environmental impact assessment in collaboration with the University of Udayana and coordination with the government. “PLN, in this regard thanked the people of Lembongan that have helped the smoothness of the project. Even, the land used for cable landing point was given to PLN at no cost by the village,” he said. BEIRUT — Six days of clashes in two Damascus suburbs may have killed hundreds of people, a dramatic spike in the rising death toll in the Syrian civil war, activists said Monday. The reports came as President Bashar Assad’s forces pressed on with a major offensive in the suburbs against opposition fighters who have been closing in on parts of the Syrian capital. To the north, regime troops surged around the contested town of Qusair in Syria’s Homs province, near the frontier with Lebanon. The precise number of those killed in the latest fighting in Jdaidet Artouz and Jdaidet al-Fadel suburbs could not be immediately confirmed. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the number of the dead could be as high as 250. Rami Abdul-Rahman, who heads the Observatory, said the group has documented 80 names of those killed but fears a much higher toll. The Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, said the death toll was 483 and that most of the victims were killed in Jdaidet Artouz. State-run news agency SANA said Syrian troops “inflicted heavy losses” on the rebels in the suburbs. Conflicting reports of death tolls are common in Syria’s crisis, especially in areas that are difficult to access because of the fighting. The government also bars many foreign journalists from covering the conflict. Both activist groups, the Observatory and the LCC, rely on a network of activists on the ground in different parts of Syria. Also Monday, two bombings targeted an army checkpoint and a military post in a third Damascus suburb, Mleiha, killing eight soldiers there, according to the Observatory.

In another tent, Zhou Lin sat tending to his wife and three-day-old son who were evacuated from a Lushan hospital soon after the quake struck on Saturday. “I was worried the child or his mother would be hurt. MEXICO CITY - A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck western Mexico on Sunday, shaking buildings in the capital, but there were no reports of significant damage or injuries, officials said. The quake, initially reported as a magnitude 6.2 off the coast, was centered 33 km (20 miles) northwest of La Union, on the border between Guerrero and Michoacan states, close to the Pacific coast, the U.S. Geological Survey said. State oil monopoly Pemex said shortly after the quake that the power supply to its Tula refinery was interrupted. Not long after, it reported electricity was coming back on line again. Pemex said it was unclear if the tremor had caused the break in energy supply at the Tula refinery, Mexico’s second biggest. It has a production capacity of 315,000 barrels per day. A Pemex official could not say whether production had been affected, but added that any loss would be made up. The quake was felt in Mexico City, about 325 km (200 miles) away from La Union. Buildings shook and residents briefly ran outdoors, but most returned inside shortly afterwards. Several senior Mexican officials, including Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong, said via Twitter there were no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage.

ANKARA - An Israeli delegation arrived in Turkey on Monday for the first time since 2010 to discuss compensation for the killing of nine Turks by Israeli commandos on a Gaza-bound aid ship, a sign of improving relations between the two U.S. allies. The visit, led by an adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, follows an apology from Israel last month, brokered by U.S. President Barack Obama, for the killings on board the Mavi Marmara aid ship in May 2010. Turkey cut its once extensive ties with the Jewish state after the Israelis killed nine Turkish pro-Palestinian activists on the vessel which was trying to breach Israel’s blockade of Gaza, a Palestinian enclave run by the Hamas Islamist group. Ankara expelled Israel’s ambassador and froze military cooperation after a U.N. report into the incident, released in September 2011, largely exonerated the Jewish state. It set precise conditions for normalizing ties - an apology, compensation and Israel lifting its embargo on Gaza. A rapprochement between two of Washington’s main Middle Eastern allies could bolster U.S. influence in the region, help coordination to contain spillover from the Syrian civil war, and ease Israel’s diplomatic isolation among its neighbors. But for all the diplomatic flurry, a full restoration of ties still appears some way off. Israel has made clear it did not commit to ending its Gaza blockade as part of the reconciliation, an oft-repeated Turkish demand, saying days after the apology that it could clamp down even harder on the enclave if security is threatened. INDONESIA VW and GM exploring possibilities to invest in Indonesia

JAKARTA - Two automotive giants, VW from Germany and GM from the US, have expressed interest to invest in Indonesia, Investment Coordinating Agency (BKPM) chief Chatib Basri said. “They have shown their seriousness to invest here,” he said after exposing realization of foreign and domestic investment in the first quarter this year here on Monday. He said representatives of VW and General Motors came to Indonesia last week “to express their interest to invest.” Representatives from the two companies wished to study and personally observe process of investment with regard to preparations they have to make if they realize their plan. “The plan of VW and GM to enter Indonesia is a positive thing for Indonesia’s economy,” he said. Chatib however could not as yet tell how much they would invest or when they would realize the investment. He only said that besides Japan it was found that German and US automotive companies have also been interested to invest in Indonesia. Chatib said that Apple Inc., a top

technology company, would also immediately realize its investment plan in the country. The California-based company has already submitted its business license to Indonesia, he said. “Let us just wait because the business license was already signed in January 2013. In view of that we hope Apple would immediately realize its plan,” he said. He said he hoped Apple’s presence in Indonesia would have a positive effect on the country’s industry as it would certainly be followed by other information technology companies because Apple has become the world’s icon. Garuda procures new planes using Shariah scheme Antara

JAKARTA - Garuda Indonesia is procuring two new Boeing 777300ERs through leasing based on a shariah financing scheme from Kuwaiti company Alafco Aviation Lease and Finance Company. “This is the first shariah-based financing scheme taken by Garuda,” the state-owned airline company’s president director, Emirsyah Satar said at the signing of a cooperation agreement between Garuda and Alafco at Soekarno-Hatta airport here on Monday. Emirsyah said this was a “milestone” in Garuda’s efforts in exploring possible other financing sources. He said the shariah financing scheme was also a breakthrough to deal with large flows of funds from the Middle East. He said the shariah-based financing based on the concept of “ijarah”

was worth around US$315 million for one airplane. “The funds from the Middle East have mostly been channeled through a shariah scheme,” he said. Emirsyah said the financing was in line with the growth of Garuda passengers which was recorded up by around 20 percent in 2012. He said the cooperation was also in line with the company’s long-term program put in the Quantum Leap 2011-2015. Alafco chairman Ahmad Alzabin meanwhile said the company was honored to be able to cooperate with Garuda. “The signing of the agreement for two Boeing 777-300ER is the first transaction his company made in Indonesia,” he said. LONDON — Liverpool fined Luis Suarez on Monday for biting an opponent, and demanded that the troublesome striker works on his disciplinary problems. The Uruguay striker dug his teeth into Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic’s arm during Sunday’s Premier League match before netting a last-gasp equalizer to clinch a 2-2 draw. “For my unacceptable behavior yesterday, the club has fined me today,” Suarez announced on his Twitter and Facebook accounts. He wants the undisclosed sum to be donated to families affected by the 1989 Hillsborough Stadium disaster which killed 96 Liverpool fans “for the inconvenience I have created to the Liverpool fans and to Ivanovic.” Suarez, who could still face a long ban from the Football Association, was suspended for seven matches in 2010 while playing for Ajax after biting a player. As we keep saying, he signed a new four-year contract last summer and we’d all love to see him here throughout that contract. “He’s a fantastic player, top scorer and everything we’d want in a striker, so there’s no change there. This is more about getting him back on the right track.” The Professional Footballers’ Association has offered the services of counselors. “There is no doubting his football ability, that’s why it is so disappointing and embarrassing when he lets himself down,” PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor said. “We have to work hard on anger management now. We have trained counselors in this field and we will be offering their services to Liverpool and the player to try to improve matters.”
