WELLINGTON – A strong earthquake killed at least 65 people in New Zealand’s secondbiggest city of Christchurch on Tuesday, with more casualties expected as rescuers worked into the night to find scores of people trapped inside collapsed buildings. It was the second quake to hit the city of almost 400,000 people in five months, and New Zealand’s most deadly natural disaster for 80 years.

“We may well be witnessing New Zealand’s darkest day...The death toll I have at the moment is 65 and that may rise,” said New Zealand Prime Minister John Key, who had flown to his home town of Christchurch, where he still has family. The 6.3 magnitude quake struck at lunchtime, when streets
and shops thronged with people and offices were still occupied. Rescuers, working under lights in rain, focused on two collapsed buildings: a financial-services office block whose four stories pancaked on top of each other, and a TV building which also housed an English-language school. Twelve Japanese students at the
school were believed to be missing, an official in Japan told Reuters. Trapped survivors could be heard shouting out to rescuers from the TV building. Local media say as many as a dozen or more people could still be inside. Relatives of those feared trapped kept a vigil outside the building as rain began to fall. A woman freed from a
collapsed building said she had waited for six hours for rescuers to reach her after the quake, which was followed by at least 20 aftershocks. “I thought the best place was under the desk but the ceiling collapsed on top, I can’t move and I’m just terrified,” office worker Anne Voss told TV3 news by mobile phone. Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker described the city, a historic tourist town popular with overseas students, as a war zone. Bali Provincial Government targets the Tanah Ampo Cruise Quay in Karangasem Regency can be operated maximally in 2011. Operation of the quay is expected to attract quite a lot of foreign cruise ships visiting Indonesia. “Based on the data of the Ministry of Transportation, the number of foreign cruise ships visiting Indonesia in 2011 will amount to 190 and a total of 33 cruise ships are ensured to transit to Bali,” said the Head of Bali Transportation, Informatics and Communication Services, Made Santha, in Denpasar on Monday (Feb 21). Santha said the Tanah Ampo cruise ship quay constructed by central and local governments had complied with the minimum requirements, so it had been ready to operate. “However, the length of existing quay is just 154 meters, while the ship berthing has the length of 180 meters. This means that only ships having the appropriate size with the quay that can lie at anchor,” he said. Bali Provincial Government, said Santha, would build the remaining length reaching 20 meters. In addition, it would build the supporting facilities around the quay whose construc-
tion had now been accomplished around 83 percent. “Cruise ships berthing in Bali will have passenger capacity above 1,000. In other words, there will be tourist visits by sea reaching 45,000 this year,” he said. It was added, based on the studies carried out by a team of experts in aquatic tourism of Singapore told that the cruise ship quay of Tanah Ampo was the one having the most magnificent scenery in Asia. “Other than offering the splendor of native culture and nature, we should always maintain the good image of the quay, so it will become an attractive aquatic destination to visit in Indonesia, especially Bali,” he said. Santha observed that the Tanah Ampo international seaport development was in conformity with the Regional Regulation on Bali Spatial Layout Plan (RTRW) 2009. “In other words, the construction of seaport has been appropriate with the Regional
Regulation on spatial layout plan 2009. On that account, the development of the surrounding environment will remain in well-ordered as the expectation of the regulation,” he said. Karangasem Regency is the third tourist destination after Badung and Gianyar Regency. The tourists visiting Karangasem are those using a cruise ship. In the 1990s, there were averagely 60 cruise ships anchored annually in the waters of Padangbai whose land location belonged to the Tanah Ampo customary village. Based on the data on cruise ship visit to Indonesia during the period of 2001 to 2007, a total of 199 cruise ships visited Indonesia, including 58 cruise ships to Bali, consisting of 37 ships to Padangbai and 21 ships to Benoa. The development of cruise ship terminal at Tanah Ampo is considered strategic and fully supported by the government of Karangasem Regency and Bali Province. (par)
THE making of ogoh-ogoh (papier mâché demon) has become a tradition among the Hindus lately. Long before the Nyepi Day, the people especially the young generation commonly have made ogoh-ogoh in various figures of bhutakala or evil spirits. Ogohogoh is put in parade during the Pengerupukan or one day before Nyepi. What is the real significance behind the making of ogohogoh in bhutakala figure? Former Director General of the Hindu and Buddhist Guidance, Ministry of Religious Affairs, Dr. Wayan Suarjaya, said that in the concept of nyomia bhutakala on the Pengerupukan Nyepi, the Hindus manifested the properties of bhuta in the form of ogoh-ogoh. Creativity of making ogoh-ogoh as a symbol bhutakala could be said as an embodiment of Saguna Brahman in Hindu philosophy. In this concept, devotees symbolized God in various forms, such as gods and goddesses, male-female deity. Aside from the concept of Saguna Brahman, Hinduism also knew Nirguna Brahman. In this concept, God was no more symbolized in any form. God was considered allNir (meaning without or beyond). “Indeed, ogoh-ogoh is not mentioned in the Vedas or any palmleaf manuscripts because the word ogoh-ogoh is derived from the Balinese vocabulary. However, there is a kind of ogoh-ogoh elsewhere, like in Jakarta known as ondelondel,” he said. In the context of realizing the properties of bhuta in the Pengerupukan procession, the Hindus make ogoh-ogoh. It is paraded around the village, after that it will be demolished. “Behind the procession, there is actually a valuable message that properties of Bhuta existing in the macrocosm (universe) and microcosm (human self) are symbolized in the form of ogoh-ogoh and needs neutralizing or somya so it will return to the properties of gods. After being paraded—meaning to kindle the properties bhuta—then the ogohogoh is demolished or symbolically neutralized in the hope that its properties will return to the nature of gods,” said the lecturer in the Institute of Hindu Dharma (IHDN) Denpasar. He added, after being paraded and demolished, the ogoh-ogoh was not necessar-
ily to set on fire. However, according to him, it was unethical if it would be displayed in strategic places. Meanwhile, Chairman of Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) of Bali Province, IGN Sudiana, said that after the parade such ogoh-ogoh should be sprinkled with demolishing holy water. By doing so, the bhuta symbolized with ogoh-ogoh was expected to return to neutral state and did not interfere with humanity. Conversely, if the ogoh-ogoh was animated spiritually by offerings, it should be demolished spiritually with demolishing offerings. “Having been paraded around, the ogohogoh may be burned or dismantled to take back its frame for reuse in the next Nyepi. Or it may be on display if people may not be satisfied to appreciate the ogoh-ogoh works created through al long enough process. But, when displaying the ogoh-ogoh, it needs affixing with one or few thorny pandanus leaves,” said Sudiana. In the meantime, as Chairman of PHDI, Sudiana called for all Hindu devotees that the making of ogohogoh should be in accordance with the Hindu literature—namely the concept of neutralizing bhutakala. Therefore, the figure of ogoh-ogoh should be in the form of bhutakala, not the manifestation of Gods. “Please avoid the theme of political nuances or outside the context of Hindu religious literature. In parading the ogoh-ogoh, avoid imbibing alcoholic drink so as not to get drunk,” he said while adding that in parading the ogoh-ogoh, pecalang or customary village security taskforce, village officials and customary village should watch them together. Head of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of Bali Office, IGAK Suthayasa, recently said that government in this case the Ministry of Religious Affairs did not restrict people from making ogoh-ogoh as a creativity of neutralizing bhutakala on Pengerupukan. However, the safe, comfortable and harmonious atmosphere should remain to get attention from all parties. Its implementation should not deviate from the purpose to neutralize bhutakala. Therefore, bearers of the ogoh-ogoh should not drink liquor that can cause intoxication. (lun)

Culture Insightful Vision and Mission Criticized Led by Denpasar Mayor, IB Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra and Vice Mayor IGN Jaya Negara, Denpasar City has a vision and mission of Denpasar being creative and culture insightful in reaching balance for harmony. This was to follow the previous vision and mission during 20052010 where AA Puspayoga was the Mayor and IB Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra was the vice. From the journey many components are still asking the implementation of this vision and mission placement. And so what’s blocking it so? In February 2011, Denpasar will be 19 years old. And during its growth it has faced many things with booming population reaching 788.445 people (Statistic Board 2010) also causing variety affects. Uncontrollable houses which were only in several places now has reached to 80 points in the city, many roads are damaged and stained the vision and mission. The conceptor of it, Drs. Wayan Geriya, when met last Monday (21/2) revealed have been involved in planning the city’s vision and mission since year 2000. Culture has many meanings and can be seen in each of our own ways. Yet as an academician he has
tried to simplify culture in the context of the city’s vision and mission based on the limited potential the city has, “Denpasar’s potential is limited, many people live here as Denpasar has many kind of cultures and has universal values yet its nature resource is very limited. And so we used culture as identity.” Geriya also admitted there are still much to do to make this vision and mission real in developing programs. He marked there are many that has been done yet not little still needs to be done, “To criticize that’s not done will be held on a seminar to get suggestions for the vision and mission.”

IDG Windu Sancaya, M.Hum, revealed that the city’s culture vision and mission has to start with a strong culture base as if not it can be disposed by the global culture influence, “If the base is not strong, it will be eroded easily by the globalization route.” Meanwhile Head of Tourism Agency for Denpasar City, Drs. I Made Mudra, M.Si., stated to bring the vision and mission to reality there has been socialization to all the people. Drowsy Driver, Sand Carrier Truck Slipped Semarapura (Bali Post) –
A sand carrier truck heading to Cargo Street, Gatot Subroto, Denpasar from Selat Duda, Karangasem slipped in Tojan-Watu Klotok route, Klungkung last Monday (21/2). Luckily there were no casualties yet the truck was stuck 1 meter deep on a rice field, damaging several plants owned by the field’s farmer. It is suspected that the DK 8786 DZ truck slipped due to driver, Gede Tanggu, drowsy
during driving. Two off road cars were then brought to evacuate the truck causing traffic on both ways. Residents are also blocking as they came to watch making lots of vehicles then turnaround to find alternative route. “It’s better to turn around instead of waiting the evacuation finished,” a motorcycle user from Klungkung working in Denpasar stated. Yet for trucks they have to wait it to finish.
After several hours, the evacuation succeeded. Truck driver admitted he was very sleepy as it is 5 am local time. in a matter of seconds he was unconscious causing the ironically truck named “Adi Jaya” slipping through the road and hitting a rice field owned by Sang Putu Raka from Gelgel, Klungkung. Hotel The Best Western, located in Kuta, is being unbelievable. As after a third warning letter was given from Badung Police Civil Service, the illegal hotel located at Kubu Street, Anyar, Kuta is still operating. For that justice team of Badung Government is in preparation to seal the hotel and rumored will be done after Nyepi day this beginning of March. The confirmation was stated by Head of the Police Civil Service, I Ketut Martha, last Monday (21/2) yet he is unsure to reveal when it will be done, “We don’t have to rush in taking this action. We have to coordinate with the justice team first, administration has to be completed then we go forward. For sure Best Western will be sealed.” Added to that, his side has received a command from the Badung Regent on taking action for this case yet to seal it they have to wait for the Regent’s Command Letter as the legal base in doing so. In other hand, it’s not only on illegality, Best Western hotel also has been
playing with taxes. Badung House of Representatives has smelt this mean situation on the Hotel’s tax payment moreover the hotel has no permit. With the 110 rooms with minimal occupation 35 percent with each room IDR 450 thousand a night, the Hotel should’ve stored IDR 200 million per month yet only IDR 45 million has been stored and it is impossible that the hotel only had 10 percent occupied as for sure the hotel is still standing until now. Yet, this IDR 45 million store payment was declined by Head of Badung Regional Income Agency, Wayan Adi Arnawa, and stated it was 3,5 more than that, 2It’s just we can’t state the real nominal as according to laws it is secreted.” Even so Adi Arnawa stated that a number of tax item was not as paid causing the tax payment was not as it should be. Hundreds of Lean Fishermen Anxious Villa Investor Blocked Road to Sea Amlapura (Bali Post) –
Hundreds of Banjar Lean fishermen in Bunutan Village, Karangasem, have been anxious as their on foot way to the beach has been blocked by the manager of foreigner invested villa, Save of Villa. Not less than these 200 fishermen now asked for a road to be built for going to sea. This was revealed during a raid to that villa last Monday (21/2) by Karangasem Vice Regent, Made Sukerana, SH and staffs. The raid was then continued by calling up the manager of the villa, Adiasa, to come to the Regent’s office for a meeting. In here Sukerana will ask the investor to give an access for these fishermen and not to cause any long going conflict between them, “If the conflict settles and there’s an agreement between investor and fishermen group, then the villa’s permit will be processed. If there’s no agreement and the permit is already given, we are afraid there will be a further conflict between them.” Sukerana asked the investor to prioritize this access as before fishermen used this area to go to the beach yet now it’s blocked for a five hectares villa, “Investor’s
obligation has to be prioritizing laws and the local in this case the fishermen’s priorities.” On behalf of Save of Villa Amed, Wayan Adiasa, stated that his side has been helping the fishermen by building places to park their boats, machine saving place also 3x6 meters resting place built in four poles. In connection to the access route, Adiasa promised will state this to his boss. Actually if this was stated from before, then there should not be any problem as it will be given, “We’re just worried the fishermen will keep pressuring us, after a machine place built then asked for access and kept asking for more.” Vice Regent stated if it’s needed there should be an agreement that supports both investor and fishermen group connecting to the beach’s security, cleanliness and reassurance. SEOUL – South Korea’s spy chief came under pressure Tuesday to step down following reports that his staff tried to steal commercial secrets from the hotel room of a visiting Indonesian trade delegation. The National Intelligence Service (NIS) has denied media reports that three agents entered the room on February 16 in an attempt to steal information on possible Indonesian arms purchases from South Korea. The intruders reportedly fled after a delegate abruptly entered the room and saw them copying files from a laptop computer onto a USB memory stick. On Tuesday opposition parties demanded the resignation of Won SeiHoon, a confidant of President Lee Myung-Bak, who became NIS director two years ago. Some members of the ruling Grand National Party (GNP) and major newspapers also called for his resignation. “It’s shameful... and I hope the NIS director will step down,” Hong JoonPyo, a top GNP member, said on his Twitter account seen Tuesday. The high-level Indonesian delegation returned home on February 17 after talks on economic cooperation, including the possible purchase of South Korea’s T-50 Golden Eagle supersonic trainer jet and other weapons. A South Korean military attache in Jakarta who was escorting the Indonesian delegation reported the hotel
incident to police. But NIS officials took away all evidence including CCTV footage, Yonhap news agency said. Indonesia has officially asked for verification of the report. The foreign ministry said it was awaiting the results of a probe. Chosun Ilbo newspaper voiced concern that South Korea could lose its biggest arms deal estimated at $1.0 billion because of an “absurd” mistake by NIS members. “The president must reshuffle the leadership of the NIS, or ask it to stay quiet for the sake of our national interest if he is not willing to do so,” it said in an editorial. Dong-A Ilbo newspaper also urged Won’s resignation, with its editorial describing the break-in as “a national shame and diplomatic gaffe”. SANAA, Yemen – Yemen’s embattled leader on Monday rejected demands that he step down, calling demonstrations against his regime unacceptable acts of provocation and offering to begin a dialogue with protesters. However, protests seeking President Ali Abdullah Saleh’s ouster did not let up. Tens of thousands rallied in four cities, including the capital of Sanaa. Demonstrators said they would
not leave fledgling encampments in central squares until he has left office. An opposition spokesman rebuffed Saleh’s offer of dialogue and an influential group of Muslim clerics called for a national unity government that would lead the country to elections. Saleh has been in power for 32 years. At least 11 people have been killed since anti-government protests erupted earlier this month, including a youth shot dead Monday, medical officials said. In an attempt to defuse
anger over the violence, Saleh told a news conference that he has ordered troops not to fire at anti-government protesters, except in self defense. The demonstrations in Yemen, the poorest Arab nation, are part of a wave of unrest that have swept across the Arab world in recent weeks and toppled autocratic leaders in Tunisia and Egypt. Saleh’s government was already weak before the protests, facing a southern separatist movement and disaffected tribesmen around the
country. Saleh is quietly cooperating with the U.S. in efforts to battle an al-Qaida franchise that has taken root in Yemen, but his government exercises limited control in the tribal areas beyond the capital. Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

TOKYO – Japan hopes that two giant pandas from China will help warm bilateral ties strained over a territorial spat — and give Tokyo’s economy a jolt, too. The two 5-year-old pandas arrived at Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo late Monday. They’ll be the zoo’s first since the 2008 death of its beloved giant panda Ling Ling. The Ueno area has been gearing up for the pandas’ arrival for weeks, with banners carrying panda cartoons and shops selling novelty goods. Japanese media crews were camped at the zoo. “The pandas are finally coming to town,” said beaming Masahiro Kayano, a jewelry store owner in Ueno. “We are so excited.” The pair — female Xiannu and male Bili — arrived at their new home around midnight Monday, completing nearly 30 hours of journey from the panda preserve in southwestern China’s Sichuan province. Despite late hours and the night chill, dozens of panda fans and neighbors gathered at the zoo’s entrance to welcome them, calling their names and cheering as a truck carrying their cages went past them, showered by flashlights. Muhammadiyah avoids movement backing Ahmadiyah dissolution Antara
JAKARTA - Muhammadiyah Chairman Din Syamsuddin said his organization would not involve in any movement supporting the dissolution of Ahmadiyah religious sect. Instead, Muhammadiyah, Indonesia‘s second biggest Islamic organization after Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), would do its best to prevent Muslims from being misled by Ahmadiyah followers, he said. “It is the state`s power to take stern action by referring to our Constitution because the existence of a group in society is the state`s business,” he said here Monday. Speaking to newsmen in response
to the unresolved Ahmadiyah matter, Din Syamsuddin said Muhammadiyah‘s stance on this deviant sect had never changed since the issuance of a “fatwa” in 1933. According to the “fatwa” that Muhammadiyah issued in 1933 or much earlier than those of Rabithan Alam Islami in 1979 and Indonesian Council of Ulemas (MUI) in 2005, Ahmadiyah was “misleading”, he said.
In response to the recent incident of sectarian violence in Banten province, he said the government tended to submit that to the people rather than take firm legal action. Despite the fact that the government had a reason for not intervening into its people‘s religious problems, it should take stern actions against those involving in violence, he said. JAKARTA - The government will develop biogas technology as an energy source for small and medium scale industries, a senior official said. Director General for Small and Medium Industries Euis Saedah said here on Monday that biogas could serve as a solution to the use of efficient energy for small and medium industrias. “The development of biogas has yet to be aimed at supporting the existence of 3.8 million IKMs while in fact the development of bio gas is quite suitable with IKMs` condition which are small scale and separate with each other,” she said. She said that the number of IKMs now reached 3.8 million with employed about 8.75 million workers. About 90 percent of these industries were small industries and the remaining ones were middle scale with groups of sectors such as food, chemicals, construction materials, clothing, handicraft and metal as well as electronics. In the meantime, Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) Suryo Bambang Sulisto said the government had not yet provided incentive for the development of biogas in Indonesia. “The incentive is needed so that the people would turn to alternative energy,” she said. She said that since it was developed 20 years ago, there were now only 14,000 units of biogas development devices in Indonesia. “Kadin has a target to install one million units in the next three years,” she said.
Two Chilean miners visit Freeport Antara
TIMIKA - Two Chilean mine workers who recently were trapped for 62 days in a depth of almost 700 meters in a mining area in San Jose, visited a mine of PT Freeport Indonesia in Mimika, Papua, since Friday. Daniel Esteban Herera Campos and Manuel Kiyosh Kuwahara, the miners told the press in Timika Sunday that in Freeport they will inspect gold, copper and silver mines of the American mining company. In addition, Esteban and Manuel will also learn the procedure of the health and safety procedures of the workers, and establish cooperation with the Indonesian Mining Asso-
ciation (IMA). Manuel praised the safety system of the miners of Freeport. He also expressed admiration of the computerization system of Freeport in the mining areas, monitoring all its operational activities. “We hope for good relations between Chile and Indonesia, not only in the economic field, but also in sharing knowledge and exchange of mining workers,” Manuel, a mechanic and engineer, said. His colleague, Esteban, who was also trapped for 62 days along with 32 fellow miners in a mine almost 700 meter deep in Chile from August to October 2010, tells about his very dramatic experience. Esteban said for 17 days and his
friends there was no contact with the outside world and the other miners on the surface. He said one important factor which enabled the miners to survive was their good understanding and mastery of saving procedures. “We are also thinking of our families, which also made us able to stay alive in the mine,” Esteban said. “In the 17 days before there was contact with the surface, every day we discussed what we could do to stay alive,” Esteban said adding that the supply of food and 20 thousand liters of water also contributed to our survival. Manuel added that on August 5, 2010, the rescue team bored a 12 cm
hole into the earth‘s crust right on the location of the trapped workers. After establishing contact with the miners, food, drinks and all the necessaries of the workers had been supplied through the hole. And at that time the rescue team managed to lower a camera through the hole to monitor the condition of the workers. Then on August 30, 2010, the rescue team dug a bigger 80 cm hole. And on September 4, 2010, built a 80 cm hole with an inclination of 80 degrees. And the last drilling was done on September 10 to build the same hole, but with an inclination of 85 degrees. After reaching the position of the workers a rescue capsule was put in
the 80 cm hole for the evacuation of each of the trapped workers. Florencio Avalos was the first pulled out from the mining area of on Wednesday October 13. Avalos reached the surface safely after 15 minutes. Manuel said the location of the mine where Esteban worked, has been operating for 100 years. The evacuation of the mining workers was witnessed in person by the Chilean President himself, Sebastian Vinera. While in Freeport, Manuel and Esteban visited the open mine in Grassberg, Tembagapura, an underground mine and tailing reclamation or Freeport sand mine in Mile Point 21.

Bali Today Emergency flights still allowed Antara
Denpasar – Emergency flights are still allowed to land in Ngurah Rai International Airport during Nyepi Day, Caka New Year 1933 which will fall on March 5, 2011. The Head of Bali Transportation Department, I Made Santha, said “emergency landing is still allowed whether it is domestic or international flights.” He added that overfly, technical landing, and emergency landing including medical evacuation are allowed as long as the crew and passengers stay in the airport area during Nyepi Day. The international and domestic flights with the destination of Ngurah Rai Airport will be removed from the schedule during the holy day. Santha said that transit is still allowed but there will be no flight designated or depart from the airport. The tour operator must explain to foreign tourists regarding the meaning of Nyepi Day so there will be no misunderstanding on the holy day for the Hindus. In addition to Ngurha Rai Airport, the harbors throughout Bali will also be closed during Nyepi.
The harbors are Gilimanuk, Padangbai, Benoa, and Celukan Bawang. The Hindus must carry out the “Tapa Brata Penyepian” or four forbidden things. Those things are amati geni (can not turn on any kind of lights or fire), amati karya (can not go to work), Amati lelungaan (can not travel) and amati lelanguan (can not entertain them self). Santha explained that Bali Governor, Made Mangku Pastika had sent letter to the related Ministries and departments in relation of Nyepi celebration in Bali. The governor also emphasized that there will be no permit for those who want to travel during Nyepi Day. For the private or public related department must come a day before and leave a day after Nyepi.

Parts of those plants taken advantage consisted of its leaf, flower, fruit, bark or roots. Each herb had different quality such as cool, warm and mild. To know whether a particular plant had a cold, warm or mild quality, it could be observed from the color of its flower and flavor. For instance, white, yellow and green flower had warm quality. If their flowers were red and blue, these plants had cool efficacy. Meanwhile, if the flower was multi-colors, they could be ensured to have mild efficacy. Likewise, if they tasted sweet and sour, its quality might be warm. However, if they tasted bitter and hot, they had cool efficacy. Then, if they were tasteless, they belonged to mild plant. In herbal medicine system, added Prastika, people would be healthy if they consumed (ahara) nutritious healthy foods regularly, had adequate rest or sleep (nidra), and behaved (vihara) healthy. If the three aspects had been committed well, but it was still found health disturbances, then a herbal treat-
ment (ausadhi) was required. Preparation method of herbal medicine could be divided into three kinds, namely grinding, spraying and boiled. Its healing method could be performed by drinking and dropping for internal healing, while the spraying or applying the paste for external use. Then, what kinds of plant could be used to cure diseases? Prastika said that virtually all edible plants by animals could be eaten by humans. Whether the herbs had medicinal quality, they could be observed from the color of their flowers and flavor as mentioned above. Similarly, the plants frequently used for spices in the cooking contained drug efficacy. Red ginger for example, was good to increase warmth of the body as well as to stimulate or maintain immunity. If red ginger added with the flowers of carambola, bark of tamarind and kalmegh leaves, they could be used to accelerate breathing and relieve cough. Meanwhile, to break up kidney stones and cure colic, people could also use herbal medicine. Its ingredients consisted of roots of reed, roots of palm tree, root of areca nut tree and added with palm sugar. All materials were thoroughly boiled. Afterward, its decoction water was
drunk in the morning and afternoon. Herbal remedies could also cope with cardiac palpitations. Its ingredients comprised the soy beans, green beans, ginger, cumin, fennel, bidara upas (Merremia mammosa) leaf, coriander and pulasari (Alyxia Stellata). All ingredients should be boiled and then water of its decoction was drunk regularly. Meanwhile, Balinese traditional healing used several palm-leaf manuscripts as reference. One of them was Lontar Usada Tiwang. This manuscript described about various types of diseases along with their treatments. Tiwang conveyed numerous symptoms in the form of disorder on the function of organ. There were several types of tiwang presented in the manuscripts such as tiwang utara, tiwang tojos, tiwang wedul, tiwang pemali pepasangan, tiwang wong, and tiwang rajasa. Prastika added that tiwang pemali pepasangan had symptoms like prickling pain in the chest and on the back. Being no resistant to the pain, the sufferers often groaned. Kintamani was chosen as the Geopark area was due to Kintamani had the potential of active volcano with mountain and lake ecosystems. It is very good and potential to be developed into a world geopark tourism region. Today, in Indonesia there are only two geoparks namely the Mount Batur Geopark and Pacitan Geopark, where they both had been proposed to the UNESCO in order to obtain establishment as a member of the Global Geopark Network. There are many potential benefits obtained if joining the Global Geopark Network of UNESCO. Among others, it would be promoted internationally
through the UNESCO’s flag without having to be accompanied by a great financing, and attract foreign investors when the national geopark has officially gone internationally, either in term of conservation, education, and tourism aspect. For the initial measure, the arrangement of Kintamani geopark will be commenced in the upcoming January 2011 through preparation made by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. As scheduled, the assessors of UNESCO will go down in July 2011 to check the feasibility if the Mount Batur Geopark will qualify as a member of the Global Geopark Network. (BTN)

It is normally served at room temperature, but can also be served warm topped with coconut milk. Another variations are to add ripe diced jackfruits (or substitute with sultanas) after the rice is partially cooked.
INGREDIENTS: 1 cup glutinous white rice 1 cup water 1 pandan leaf ½ cup palm sugar syrup ¼ cup thick coconut milk Pinch of salt

Rinse rice very well under running water for 2 minutes

and soak for 4 hours. Rinse again until water becomes clear. Place rice, 1 cup of water and pandan leaf in rice cooker or steamer and cook for approx 20 minutes, or until liquid has evaporated.
Add palm sugar syrup, coconut milk and salt, and steam for 15 minutes. Spread rice evenly 2.5 cm thick on tray and allow to cool to room temperature. Wet a sharp knife with warm and cut into even squares to serve.
Helpful hint: to speed up the soaking process, pour boiling water over the rice and let stand for 1 hour. Drain, then add another lot of boiling water and soak for another 30 minutes. BUSINESS Volvo planning factory in west China’s Chengdu Associated Press
SHANGHAI – Chinese officials say Volvo Car Corp. plans a manufacturing base in the western Chinese city of Chengdu as it aims for expansion in the world’s biggest auto market following its buyout by independent automaker Geely. An official with the city’s Automotive Industry Investment Bureau confirmed a report Tuesday that the Swedish carmaker has chosen Chengdu as a manufacturing base, but would not give further details. The Volvo factory reportedly will be focused on making compact and economy cars on a large scale. Shanghai and the northern city of Daqing also had been vying for new Volvo factories following the acquisition last year by Geely. Volvo plans a news conference to announce its strategy in China later this week in Beijing, the Chengdu Overseas Media Service, a local, nongovernmental media group, reported, citing officials from the city’s trade development zone. Ning Shuyong, a Geely spokesman, would not confirm the report but said a decision was pending. Chengdu, capital of populous Sichuan province, is among many Chinese cities aspiring to become major automobile manufacturing hubs and is one of the country’s biggest inland markets. While overall sales of autos are forecast to slow slightly from their torrid growth in recent years, sales in the provinces are surging as increasingly affluent families buy their first cars or trade up. Chinese media reports say the factory in Chengdu is already under construction and is due to be-
gin production by 2013, with an initial capacity of 125,000. Privately-owned Geely Holding Group agreed in March 2010 to buy Volvo Car from Ford Motor Co. for $1.8 billion, the biggest acquisition by a major Chinese automaker so far. The buyout gave small but ambitious Geely access to a prestigious brand and top-tier technology and enabled Ford to unload the loss-making automaker to raise cash and focus on its core Ford and Lincoln brands. Industry analysts have expressed doubts over 13-year-old Geely’s ability to make a success of Volvo, an older, perennially money-losing manufacturer on another continent. Geely, based in the eastern city of Hangzhou, has built a business selling cars, motorcycles and scooters with little government support. Volvo recently set up a new China headquarters in Shanghai. Geely has said it plans to keep its production arrangements in Europe and contracts for assembling 15,000 cars a year by a Ford joint venture, Changan Ford Mazda Automobile Co., in Chongqing. The longest of those contracts runs until 2018. The Swedish automaker sold 22,400 vehicles in China in 2009, up 80 percent from the year before, but has trailed behind rivals like BMW and Audi.
Housing data may have understated extend of collapse Reuters
WASHINGTON – A housing trade association is examining the possibility that the data it releases underestimated the collapse of the housing industry, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday. The National Association of Realtors, which issues the monthly existing home sales report that is closely watched by economists and financial markets, may have overcounted home sales dating as far back as 2007, the newspaper said in an article posted to its web site. NAR’s home sales count was at odds with calculations by CoreLogic, a California real estate analysis firm, according to the report. CoreLogic says NAR could have overstated
home sales by as much as 20 percent. An over-count of home sales may mean that there is a bigger backlog of unsold homes and that it will take longer for the U.S. housing sector to climb out of the deep hole it is already in, dragging on the broader economic recovery. The crash of U.S. housing markets, in part because of shoddy lending practices, was at the heart of the economic meltdown that started in the United States and spread around the world. The U.S. recovery has been held back by the slow healing of housing markets, with high foreclosure rates hold down home values and sales. NAR said the data could be revised downward this summer, the newspaper said.

ECB economist issues new inflation warning Agence France-Presse
FRANKFURT – European Central Bank chief economist Juergen Stark sounded Monday a warning on inflation and said the ECB would act quickly at any sign that people expected it to climb much higher. His comments suggested the central bank could raise its main interest rate from the current record low of 1.0 percent sooner than most analysts expect, possibly within a few months. Inflation across the 17-nation zone could increase from the present level of 2.4 percent, and is “likely to stay above two percent in 2011, before moderating again,” Stark told an event at Frankfurt’s Goethe University. His comments were also published on the ECB’s website. The bank has a mandate to maintain price stability, which it defines as inflation that is below but close to 2.0 percent over the
medium term, a period of roughly 18 months. Soaring commodity and oil prices stemming from strong demand in emerging economies and unrest in the Middle East have raised concern that the ECB’s monetary policy geared towards heavily-indebted eurozone members could fuel inflation. “Risks to the medium-term outlook for price developments in the euro area as a whole could move to the upside,” Stark acknowledged. “We need to keep a close eye on any signs of emerging secondround effects in the behavior of wages and price setters,” Stark said. “I can assure you that we will act quickly and decisively on any indications of emerging secondround effects” such as demands for much higher wages or strong price increases, he added. Meanwhile, in a separate address to academics and business
representatives in Duesseldorf, western Germany, German central bank president Axel Weber repeated criticism of proposed measures to help Greece and Ireland weather their debt crises. “All too often, short-term, ad hoc decisions are taken that are counter-productive in the medium term,” Weber said. He pointed in particular to a proposal to let the European Financial Stability Facility buy bonds of troubled countries or lend them money to buy back the bonds themselves. The ECB said Monday that it has bought some 77 billion euros ($105 billion) in government debt since its Securities Markets Programme began last May. In comments heard often in Germany, Weber, who is also a member of the ECB governing council, warned: “The European Union mustn’t become a transfer union,” where funds are shifted from stronger to weaker members.

LOS ANGELES – Lucy Lawless doesn’t mind being typecast. The 42year-old actress, who became a household name through the 19952001 TV series “Xena: Warrior Princess” and who can currently be seen on Starz’s “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena,” admits that playing Xena may have pigeonholed her into being cast as the warrior in period pieces. But, the New Zealander notes, “What am I going to complain about? How many actresses work as much as me?” Lawless auditioned to play an Amazon queen in the 1994 TV movie “Hercules and the Amazon Women” — a role she says she was “a bit young” for — but instead landed the role of an Amazon lieutenant. “I remember being bummed because it was so much smaller (a role) than the Amazon queen,” Lawless says. “But it felt quite right to cast us that way. Roma Downey actually played the Amazon queen. She was good; it needed someone with a little bit more life experience than me to carry off that role.” Lawless’ bit

But as Oprah said, ‘You can have everything; you just can’t have it all at once.’ So that was time well spent. I have well-adjusted children. LOS ANGELES – It may seem as though Academy Awards voters would be a bunch of fawning monarchists, considering how often the ceremony has been a love fest for all things English. But British kings and queens generally wind up losers at the Oscars. If “The King’s Speech,” a saga about Queen Elizabeth II’s dad, makes good on its status as best-picture favorite on Sunday, it would become the first film with a British monarch as its central figure to win the top prize in the 83-year history of the Oscars. Two films with a British king or queen as a supporting player — 1966’s “A Man for All Seasons” and 1998’s “Shakespeare in Love” — did win best picture. Yet past contenders with a monarch in a lead role have always lost: 1933’s “The Private Life of Henry VIII,” 1946’s “Henry V,”
1964’s “Becket,” 1968’s “The Lion in Winter,” 1969’s “Anne of the Thousand Days,” 1998’s “Elizabeth” (which lost to “Shakespeare in Love”) and 2006’s “The Queen.” Actors as British monarchs have fared a bit better, with lead-acting wins by Charles Laughton in the title role of “The Private Life of Henry VIII”; Katharine Hepburn as Henry II’s captive queen, Eleanor of Aquitaine, in “The Lion in Winter”; and Helen Mirren as Elizabeth II in “The Queen.” Judi Dench won a supporting Oscar as Elizabeth I in “Shakespeare in Love.”

NEW YORK – A made-for-TV movie told the story of Amanda Knox, a US college student convicted of killing her British roommate in Italy, despite objections from the families of both Knox and the victim. “Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy” leaves it to the viewer to decide her ultimate guilt and includes doubts cast on the DNA testing that convicted her, which are at the heart of an appeal lodged by her lawyers. Knox was sentenced in December 2009 to 26 years in prison for the murder of Meredith Kercher in a drug-fuelled sex game that turned violent. She has repeatedly protested
her innocence. She is currently appealing the sentence, claiming that key forensic evidence used to convict her is unreliable and should be rejected. The next hearing is scheduled for March 12. Kercher was found on November 2, 2007 — semi-nude in a pool of blood with her throat slashed — in the cottage she shared with Knox. Knox’s then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito and a man from Ivory Coast, Rudy Guede, were also convicted of the murder. In the movie, aired on the Lifetime network, Knox is portrayed by Hayden Panettiere of the hit US series “Heroes,” who stars alongside Paolo Romio as Sollecito in a dra-
matic rendering that is closely based on court records. The producers edited out some of the more graphic parts of the killing scene after the outrage set off by the film’s trailer, but the families on both sides continued to object to it. “The movie is ill-timed, since Amanda’s appeal is under way,” David Marriott, a spokesman for the Knox family, said. Francesco Maresca, who represents Kercher’s family, also objected to the film. “To have a film so soon, on such a violent death and with the memory of this tragedy so fresh in the family’s mind, seems totally inappropriate and unjustified,” he was quoted as saying in the British Telegraph.

WASHINGTON – Social media, cellphone cameras, satellite television, restive youth and years of pent-up anger are proving to be a toxic mix for authoritarian regimes in the Middle East. In clip after clip of footage from the street protests that have been sweeping the region, demonstrators — mostly young men — can be seen among the crowds holding mobile phone cameras aloft to document the scenes. The shaky footage of peaceful protests — and images of horrific carnage — have been uploaded to Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube and other sites and aired on pan-Arab satellite television stations like AlJazeera. Google-owned YouTube has been highlighting amateur footage from the unrest — such as clips from Libya from a user who goes by the name “enoughgaddafi” — at its news and politics channel, CitizenTube. In Bahrain and Libya, graphic pictures and raw video of harsh crackdowns by the security forces on crowds of protesters earned in-
ternational condemnation for their governments and further fueled popular anger in the streets. LOS ANGELES – Twenty-five lions rescued from circuses in Bolivia under a law banning the use of wild animals for public shows arrived in their new open-air home in the United States, organizers said. The 13 male and 12 female lions arrived in Denver, Colorado after being transported in special cages on a cargo flight from the south American country, said The Wild Animal Sanctuary. Upon arrival at Denver International Airport the animals were transported in specially built rescue trailers to the sanctuary, located 48 kilometers (30 miles) northeast of Denver, and released one by one into each of the eight temporary 1,400 square foot enclosures. “As each lion entered their new home they felt grass on their toes for the first time ever,” said the sanctuary. “The lions were kept in the family groups they were rescued with and after close observation will be released into four different prides in 20 acre habitats with underground dens, shade structures and play structures to help them with
enrichment and exercise,” they added. The animals were brought from Bolivia by Animal Defenders International (ADI), which said its “Operation Lion Ark” was “the biggest rescue and airlift of lions ever seen.” ADI president Jan Creamer said the “truly remarkable beasts” were rescued “from their terrible conditions in the Bolivian circuses,” with many malnourished, stressed and traumatized by their experiences. The group helped nurse the animals back to health before the transfer. “All 25 of these ‘bravehearts’ thoroughly deserve the life that awaits them in Colorado,” Creamer said. “They will have acres to roam in and at last they will be allowed to be lions as nature intended. At last they will be free.” During the rescue ADI also seized six monkeys, a coati mundi (a member of the raccoon family), a deer and a horse, all of which were given to Bolivian sanctuaries or released back into the wild. ADI said the effort began with its undercover investigation that exposed “horrific abuse in circuses across South America.”

TAIPEI – The launch of Apple Inc’s iPad2 tablet will be delayed to June from April as maker Hon Hai faces production bottlenecks due to the device’s new design, Taiwanese brokerage Yuanta Securities said in a note. Component makers had to change their production processes after Apple made design changes to
the iPad2 before the Lunar New Year at the beginning of February. “Our checks suggest new issues are being encountered with the new production process and it is taking time to resolve them,” Yuanta’s head of downstream tech equities, Vincent Chen, wrote in the note on Tuesday. Hon Hai declined to comment on the note. Apple was not immediately available for comment. The note said
that if the launch of the iPad2 is delayed by two months, total iPad shipments would be 23 million units this year, down from the broker’s original forecast of 30.6 million units. Manufacturing sources have previously said the new model would have cameras on the front and back of the device and would be slimmer, lighter and have a better resolution display than the first iPad.

LONDON - Manchester United’s preparations for their Champions League fixture against Marseille on Wednesday have been hit by the news that Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand both failed to travel with the squad. Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs will be forced to watch from the sidelines Captain Ferdinand has not played for United since sustaining a calf injury in the warm-up prior to the club’s 2-1 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers on February 5, but the absence of Giggs is as yet unexplained. Michael Owen (groin) and Jonny Evans (ankle) also failed to board the plane to France, while Anderson fails to make the trip having suffered a knee injury in the FA Cup win over Crawley which could see him sidelined for two months. However, Brazilian defenders Fabio and Rafael are both included despite suffering injuries against Crawley, while the squad is boosted by the inclusion of youngsters Joshua King and Ryan Tunnicliffe. In the absence of Ferdinand and Evans, Chris Smalling will partner Nemanja Vidic in defence, while it is reported that Wayne Rooney could move left to fill in for Giggs. Marseille, meanwhile, have learned that France international Mathieu Valbuena has recovered from a knee injury suffered on January 22 and could play in the last-16, first-leg tie. “I am operational and at the coach’s disposition,” Valbuena said. “It’s up to him to decide if he selects me or not.” However, fellow international Andre-Pierre Gignac will definitely miss out after straining an adductor muscle.

PARIS – AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso received a four match suspension from UEFA on Monday for headbutting Spurs coach Joe Jordan in last week’s Champions League Last 16 first leg clash. He was already suspended for the second leg after being booked. AC Milan told AFP that the player would not be making any reaction to the punishment and that they were not going to appeal. The suspension means that Gattuso will not be available for Champions League action until the final should Milan reach it. Gattuso cut a frustrated figure during the 1-0 defeat to Tottenham at the San Siro and regularly squared up to beanpole striker Peter Crouch after challenges between the pair. He also argued with Jordan on the
touchline before pushing the former Milan player in the neck. It was after the game that the Italian - who had a spell playing for Rangers and married a Scotswoman - ran over to confront Jordan again before head-butting the 59-year-old. Gattuso had last week apologised for his actions, though, he said he had been provoked throughout the game by Jordan. “I lost my head and I’m taking responsibility because I did something I shouldn’t have done,” said the fiery midfielder, a World Cup winner in 2006. “Jordan was breaking my balls throughout the second half but that doesn’t justify my reaction. “I was annoyed about the words I’d exchanged with Jordan. We were both speaking Scottish given that I played in his country in Glasgow but I’m not going to say what was said. “I made a mistake doing what I did to an older person, and that’s it.”

Knicks, Nuggets agree on Anthony deal Associated Press Writer
NEW YORK – The New York Knicks ended the Carmelo Anthony trade saga and their quest for a second superstar with one blockbuster deal. The Knicks beat out the rival New Jersey Nets to win the Anthony sweepstakes by agreeing to a trade with the Denver Nuggets on Monday, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press.

The deal that would finish the season-long trade speculation involving Denver’s All-Star forward and send him to his desired destination can’t be finalized until Tuesday during a conference call with the NBA office. Assuming it goes through, it puts Anthony alongside Amare Stoudemire in a potentially explosive frontcourt — at a heavy cost to the Knicks, who hoped in July to sign two top stars but came away with only one. The person provided no other details of who was in the deal, which was first reported Monday by The Denver Post. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment publicly on the trade. The Post, citing a league source, said the Knicks would send Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov and a 2014 first-round draft pick to the Nuggets, who would get additional picks and cash. Along with Anthony, New York would acquire Chauncey Billups,
Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter and Renaldo Balkman, according to the Post. ESPN later reported it was a three-way deal with Minnesota, which would acquire Eddy Curry and Anthony Randolph from the Knicks for Corey Brewer. The Nuggets have explored an Anthony trade since he refused to sign the three-year contract extension worth nearly $65 million they offered him last summer. They appeared on the verge of sending him to the Nets on multiple occasions, but the Knicks increased their offer enough to land Anthony, who was believed to prefer New York all along. “All trades for coaches are sad, there’s happy and sad. I’m glad it’s over, I’m glad it’s an opportunity to reinvent,” Denver coach George Karl said as he got into his SUV outside the Pepsi Center on Monday night. “I think everybody handled it as classy as you can handle it. There’s some sadness to it, there always will be. In the same, it’s time to move on, reinvent.” The Knicks
would hope Anthony could be in uniform Wednesday when they host the Milwaukee Bucks. Anthony led the Nuggets to the playoffs in each of his first seven seasons in Denver after winning a national title at Syracuse as a freshman and had them positioned for another playoff run this year. But Denver advanced out of the first round just once in that time. He stood to become the headliner of the 2011 free agent class, but didn’t want to risk free agency knowing a new collective bargaining agreement could cost him millions. But once he refused the extension with the Nuggets — plus put his Denver mansion on the market last year — the Nuggets’ new front office team of general manager Masai Ujiri and team president Josh Kroenke had to begin trade talks so they wouldn’t risk losing him and getting nothing in return as the Cavaliers did with LeBron James and the Toronto Raptors did with Chris Bosh last year.

DELRAY BEACH, Florida – US top seed Andy Roddick pulled out of the ATP Delray Beach International Championship, complaining that he felt ill after winning his 30th career ATP crown on Sunday at Memphis. Roddick was pushed to the limit by 20-year-old Canadian Milos Raonic before winning 7-6 (9/7), 6-7 (11/13), 7-5, smacking a diving forehand passing winner on match point in what he called the greatest shot of his career. Roddick made his pro debut at Delray Beach in 2000 but has not played in the $442,500 Florida event since 2003, his best showing a 2002 runner-up effort. After battling mononucleosis, a viral infection, last year, the 28-year-old American wants to take no chances with what has him feeling bad this time. “I felt like I got hit by a bus,” Roddick said on Monday. “I woke up this morning and my bed was soaking wet from sweat. It’s just unfortunate timing for this sickness. I honestly don’t feel like I can go out there and give it my best. “I need to get better before I can play again.” Roddick, who will head home to Texas to meet with doctors, is set to lead the US Davis Cup team next in a first round tie at Santiago, Chile. Bahrain withdraws opening race BAHRAIN Grand Prix organisers have announced that the event will not host the opening round of the 2011 Formula 1 season, after days of uncertainty following unrest in the country. The decision was finally confirmed by the track organisers on Monday afternoon.

Yamaha plays down lack of sponsor YAMAHA racing boss Lin Jarvis insists he is not concerned that the team will start its MotoGP championship defence without a title sponsor. The squad unveiled its definitive 2011 livery today, and with the loss of previous main backer Fiat, the bikes will run in Yamaha’s corporate blue colours. Fiat had been the works Yamaha team’s title sponsor since 2007, but departed when Valentino Rossi left the team at the end of last year. Cigarette manufacturer Camel had sponsored Yamaha prior to the switch to Fiat. “Obviously it’s a pity that Fiat is not with us this year as we had four fantastic seasons together, I think they were probably the most successful title sponsor ever in the sport; four seasons, three championships and three ‘triple crowns’,” said Jarvis. “They have now changed their communications strategy and along with the departure of Valentino we have seen a shift in our focus area towards sponsorship, having been primarily Italian based in the past.” He admitted that Yamaha had hunted for new sponsorship but drawn a blank, though he insisted this was not a ‘negative’ situation. “We’ve been talking to several potential sponsors and partners in Asia and in Spain but finally we haven’t been able to find anything that will
work well for us at present,” Jarvis said. “As a result we will start the season in blue which is quite appropriate as we are celebrating our 50th anniversary so it’s fitting we begin in our corporate colours. “There’s no negative consequence of this situation, it actually gives us freedom to do some extra special things in our 50th year.” But Jarvis confirmed that
Yamaha’s future preference was to find a proper replacement for Fiat. “For the future we would welcome any new partner to get involved with us and we are open to changes,” he said. Yamaha is the only factory MotoGP team without a primary sponsor, with Honda, Ducati and Suzuki continuing their long relationships with Repsol, Philip Morris and Rizla respectively.

The Crown Prince informed Bernie Ecclestone of the decision by telephone earlier today. “At the present time the country’s entire attention is focused on building a new national dialogue for Bahrain,” said Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa. “Although Bernie Ecclestone had graciously made clear that a decision on the race was entirely Bahrain’s to make and was not yet required, we felt it was important for the country to focus on immediate issues of national interest and leave the hosting of Bahrain’s Formula 1 race to a later date. “I would like to extend my personal gratitude to Bernie Ecclestone for his support and understanding. “After the events of the past week, our nation’s priority is on overcoming tragedy, healing divisions and rediscovering the fabric that draws this country together; reminding the world of the very best that Bahrain is capable of as a nation once again united.” Ecclestone added: “It is sad that Bahrain has had to withdraw from the race, we wish the whole nation well as they begin to heal
their country. “The hospitality and warmth of the people of Bahrain is a hallmark of the race there, as anyone who has been at a Bahrain Grand Prix will testify. We look forward to being back in Bahrain soon.” The postponement of the race means the season will now start in Australia on 27 March, two weeks later than originally scheduled. Renault boss Eric Boullier said his team fully supported the decision. “The recent situation in Bahrain has been very difficult for the country. We feel the decision taken by the Crown Prince is wise and we fully support it,” he said. “The Bahrain Grand Prix has always been welcomed with enthusiasm from the Bahraini people, and we’re looking forward to going back there when they have healed their country. We will now amend our logistics accordingly and will get ready for Australia.” No decision has been made on a new date for the rescheduling of the race, which was due to take place from March 11th to 13th.
