Ferguson film ‘Whose Streets?’ aims to show humanity of community

PARK CITY - The filmmakers of “Whose Streets?,” chronicling the uprising in Ferguson, Missouri after the 2014 police killing of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown, said the documentary attempts to show the humanity behind a community in crisis. “Whose Streets?” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this week and follows the Ferguson community as they protested Brown’s death, which led to weeks of tense unrest that drew worldwide interest.

The film, co-directed by Sabaah Folayan and Missouri resident Damon Davis, combines social media and amateur footage with original footage depicting the actions of key people in the community. “When mainstream media isn’t

committed to solving these problems but is more committed to ratings, when politicians are so partisan that they’re confusing us, it becomes up to artists to show people the way,” Folayan said. At this year’s festival, four films in the documentary competition delve into the impact of the Black Lives Matter movement that rose out of killings of Brown and other black men by police in various U.S. cities in the past years. Women lead unprecedented worldwide mass protests against Trump

WASHINGTON - Hundreds of thousands of women filled the streets of major American cities to lead an unprecedented wave of international protests against President Donald Trump, mocking and denouncing the new U.S. leader the day after his inauguration. Women activists, outraged by Trump’s campaign rhetoric and behavior they found to be especially misogynistic, spearheaded scores of of marches in the United States and sympathy rallies around the world on Saturday. Organizers said they drew nearly 5 million protesters in all, far surpassing crowd expectations. The demonstrations also highlighted strong discontent over Trump’s comments and policy positions toward a wide range of groups, including Mexican immigrants, Muslims, the disabled and environmentalists. In contrast to the heated, often shrill tone of the presidential campaign, and

the grim imagery of “American carnage” Trump evoked in his inaugural address, the mood during Saturday’s protests was largely upbeat, even festive. Chanting such slogans as, “We need a real leader, not a creepy tweeter,” and “Hey-hey, ho-ho, Donald Trump has got to go,” many marchers wore knitted pink cat-eared “pussy hats” in a reference to Trump’s boast, in a 2005 video made public weeks before the election, about grabbing women by the genitals. While women constituted the bulk of the demonstrators, many were accompanied by husbands, boyfriends and children.

The planned centerpiece of the protests, a Women’s March on Washington, appeared to draw larger crowds than turned out a day earlier to witness Trump’s swearing-in on the steps of the U.S. Capitol. No official estimates of the turnout were available, but it clearly exceeded the 200,000 marchers projected in advance by organizers, filling long stretches of downtown Washington around the White House and the National Mall. Importance of entrepreneurship for young generation

AS the country with the fourth largest population in the world, Indonesia has the potential to develop its economy. The population is not only the player in the economic development but also serves as a market for business sector. Unfortunately, the increase in population does not necessarily contribute to improving the ability of local people’s economy. It can be seen from the annual growth rate of population of Indonesia reaching 1.49 percent or about 4.5 million people. However, according to Central Statistic Agency (BPS) of Indonesia, the economic growth rate in 2015 has decreased, namely 4.8 percent only. It happened because some problems arising as a result of inflation, unemployment and other economic problems. To realize a developed country, at least 2 percent of the population should be entrepreneurs. With large number of population, Indonesia only has 1.65 percent of it becoming entrepreneurs, so that it still left behind compared to other ASEAN countries such as Singapore having the entrepreneurs as much as 7 percent (of the population), Malaysia (5 percent) and Thailand (3 percent),” said Minister of Cooperatives and the SMEs, AAG Ngurah Puspayoga, in the Jury of the National Independent Entrepreneurial Program 2014 at Wisma Mandiri Club on Jalan Mataram, South Jakarta. To that end, the entrepreneurial habit should be instilled from childhood, or put into school curriculum. Why is young entrepreneur so important? It happens because currently many graduates are unemployed due to incomparable growth of job opportunity to the number graduates that ultimately increases the number of unemployment. If younger generations are already accustomed to entrepreneurship from school age, certainly after graduating they will not become job seekers. Instead they will become job creators, and they are likely to live in prosperity. Entrepreneurship is basically one’s ability to see and assess business opportunities and gather resources needed to take appro-

priate action and take advantage of it in order to achieve success. Public awareness, especially the young generation, of becoming entrepreneurs in Indonesia is still low. They still have orientation in looking for job mainly applying to be a civil servant or employees of companies whose vacancies are limited. In Indonesia, the number of bachelor graduates each year is not comparable to the existing job opportunities. Each year, state and private colleges hold at least twice graduations with an average of 250,000 bachelors and only about 10,000 people can be absorbed in the job market nationally and globally (Soefijanto 2012). Pursuant to the BPS report, the open unemployment rate in February 2016 amounted to 5.5 percent. It means that of the 100 existing workforce there are about five to six unemployed people. When compared to previous period or February 2015, the open unemployment decreased by 0.31 percent. Nevertheless, the open unemployment rate for university graduate (undergraduate) has increased significantly. The unemployment of educated graduates is recorded to increase from 5.34 percent in February

2015 to 6.22 percent in February 2016. Entrepreneur is the forerunner of SME business. To develop and increase the number of SMEs in Indonesia, it depends on how to improve the mentality of the youth in entrepreneurship. Younger generation should have mentality that is not afraid of failing as well as dares to try. Daring to take risk is one of the ways to build a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Many people are afraid of competition against foreign companies having great capital, so that it discourages the mentality of Indonesian young entrepreneurs. Actually, the competition occurs does not to bring down each other among the employers, but it is going to further motivate the entrepreneurs to innovate in the production, distribution, and marketing. Without competition, there will be no challenges to innovate continuously. If young people are aware of the importance of entrepreneurship, they will surely reduce job seekers and the number of unemployment in Indonesia. Therefore, as citizen and young people they should never be lulled in a comfort zone under the funding of parents, so that they will forget the position as successor that will increase challenges in the future. Buleleng lacks dozens of doctors and nurses

SINGARAJA - Insistence of Commission IV of the Buleleng House of Representatives to appoint contract doctors and nurses was responded by the Buleleng Health Agency. Health Agency will overcome the crisis of doctors and nurses by appointing doctors and nurses through contract system. From existing data, the entire community health center and primary hospital at Tangguwisia village, Seririt, lack 81 personnel of general practitioners, dentists and nurses. Head of the Buleleng Health Agency, IGN Mahapramana, recently said in the parliamentary building that the region lacks general practitioners, dentists and nurses at 20 health centers either those having provided hospitalization or outpatient services only. In addition, the same condition is experienced by the primary (non-class) hospital at Tangguwisia village, Seririt. This condition has long happened and peaked when central government imposes civil servant recruitment moratorium. In addition to the health centers and primary hospital, Buleleng Hospital is still experiencing some shortages of medical specialist. Similarly, it happened due to the policy of central government that has closed civil servant recruitment since the past few years. Besides, the hospital has difficulty in obtaining additional medical specialists because the graduates from renowned universities in Bali, including from outside the region, are not interested to serve in Buleleng Hospital. Moreover, the effort to increase medical specialist through contract system has not been optimal, so that this issue remains to be a stumbling block to hospitals in improving public health services. “Since there has been no appointment for long time, the shortage continues to grow. As a result, there are health centers having provided hospitalized services, but only having one doctor with civil servant status. We’ve been adding to contract officers but have not been maximized. The most difficult issue faced by hospitals is in getting a medical specialist,” he said. According to Mahapramana, based on the existing data the agency lacks 20 general practitioners for health centers and 31 people for non-class hospitals. Ideally, the government employs 83 general practitioners. However, until this year all the health centers and non-class hospitals are only filled in by 57 general practitioners. Dentists also experienced similar condition, where the ideal number is 42 people, but currently the government can only have met 30 people, so that it still lacks 12 people. In the meantime, the government should ideally assign as many as 228 nurses, but so far the position can only be filled in by 198 personnel. Thus, Buleleng still lack 38 nurses. “It is in accordance with our data and in the whole we still lack many personnel. In essence we agree to the desire of the parliament to ask for the formation of civil servant to central government,” he explained. With regard to the appointment plan of contract doctors and nurses, Mahapramana said that the effort is still examined by considering financial condition of the district government. Admittedly, the appointment of contract doctor and nurse is indeed effective to overcome the crisis of doctors and nurses, but their qualification is specific and must be supported by the ability of regional budget to pay their salaries. Clearly, appointment of the doctors or nurses will be carried out in accordance with the mechanism and regulation, including promoting transparency without neglecting their quality and qualifications. “The solution is by appointing doctors or nurses through contract system. Nevertheless, this must be learned and examined in details particularly in the matter of budget preparedness,” added Mahapramana. (kmb38)

DENPASAR — A former Reuters war correspondent on trial in Indonesia on charges of possessing hashish faces up to four years in prison, a prosecutor said Thursday.

David Fox, a British national, was arrested Oct. 8 along with Australian Giuseppe Serafino on the tourist island of Bali. Police said they confiscated a total of 10.09 grams (0.36 ounces) of hashish from Fox’s clothing and house. He is being tried at the Denpasar District Court, where prosecutor Erawati Susina said he could face a maximum four years in prison. Serafino is being tried separately and faces the same possible sentence. Police said Fox, 55, told them he had used the drug for years to overcome stress caused by covering conflicts. He worked for Reuters for 20 years but was fired

in 2011 for making an off-color remark in an instantmessaging system while covering the 2011 Japan tsunami and nuclear meltdowns. Bali police first raided the house of Serafino in Sanur, a beachside town and resort area, where they reportedly seized 7.32 grams (0.26 ounces) of hashish. His arrest led to the detention of Fox at a bar run by Serafino. Serafino, 49, told police he had used the drug since 2007 after being diagnosed with lip cancer. Indonesia has extremely strict drug laws and convicted smugglers are often executed. More than 150 people are on death row, mostly for drug crimes. About a third of them are foreigners. Eighteen people convicted of drug-related offenses, mostly foreigners, have been executed since President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo took office in October 2014. (ap)

Killed, body of woman put into sack Head injured, neck ensnared with trap DENPASAR - When the residents of Sidakarya, South Denpasar, precisely on Jalan Kerta Dalem, were busy celebrating Saraswati feast day on Saturday (Jan. 21), they were surprised with the finding of a sack floating in Punggawa River. Having been opened, it turned out to contain a dead woman suspected of being a murder victim. “It was found around 08:00, exactly in front of a house number 100X. Our personnel are still doing crime scene investigation. Its identity has not been known or Mrs. X,” said a source in the Denpasar police. The source added that based on explanation of Made Kara, 57, living at Jalan Sidakarya 44 at 07:30 as usual after opening his stall in front of the scene he looked to Punggawa River. At that time, he saw a suspicious large sack. Furthermore, Kara told the river janitor, Wayan Kadra, 48, who happened to be cleaning up at that time. They both then checked the content of the sack. Kadra who lives on Jalan Bedugul Gang Gagak, Sidakarya, came down to the river. After it was pulled by using cleaning tool, he saw people’s hair coming out. Kadra straightly went up and reported the finding to pecalang (customary security guard) to be forwarded to the South Denpasar Police. At 09:30, the identification team of Denpasar police arrived at

the scene. The victim’s body was then evacuated and carried up to the road. “Crime scene investigation was led in person by Chief of Denpasar Police,” said a source who asked for anonymity. From the results of initial examination, the victim is known to be female without identity, estimated to be 40 years of age, and has fatty posture with the height of about 150 centimeters, put on black T-shirt but wearing no pants. There are three open wounds on the back of the head alleged to have been caused by strike of sharp weapon and her neck was alleged to have been ensnared by strap and the body was put into a sewn white sack

but at leg’s part of the plastic sack was torn. “At the crime scene was also found a hand phone of NX brand. At 10:00, the victim’s body was taken to Sanglah Hospital by using ambulance of the regional disaster mitigation agency or BPBD Bali,” he added. Chief of Denpasar Police, Hadi Purnomo, accompanied by Chief of Criminal Investigation Unit, Reinhard, said that his institution was still exploring to examine witnesses. Main focus of the investigation is to uncover the victim’s identity. “Our personnel are still at the crime scene and witnesses are still being questioned. At least 36 killed as Indian train derails

BHUBANESWAR - At least 36 people were killed and 50 injured on Saturday night when nine coaches of a passenger train derailed in eastern India, in the latest disaster to hit the vast and accident-prone state railways, police said. The Hirakhand express train from Jagdalpur to Bhubaneswar derailed at around 11:20 pm near Kuneri station, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, around 30 km (18 miles) outside the town of Rayagada. “The rescue operation is almost over,” said J.P. Mishra, the chief public relations officer at East Coast Railway, which has jurisdiction over the area where the derailment occurred. “Our first priority is to take care of the injured passengers and provide them proper treatment by shifting them to hospitals. We are also searching all the coaches to ensure that nobody remains stranded in them,” he said. The reason for the derailment has not been ascertained, said Mishra, adding

that they were not ruling out any possibility of foul play and investigations will be conducted. The incident area is one where Maoist rebels typically operate. BEIRUT - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s opponents appear more divided than ever as they prepare for peace talks next week, demoralised by their defeat in Aleppo and unable to unite into a single force to defend their remaining territory. The new diplomacy led by Assad’s Russian allies has exposed yet more splits in a rebellion that has never had a clear chief, with rebel factions long fractured by regional rivalries, their ties to foreign states, and an ideological battle over whether to pursue Syrian national or Sunni jihadist goals. After the rebels’ defeat in Aleppo last month, the latest effort to unify the jihadist and moderate wings of the insurgency collapsed. kms (29 miles) west of Arawa on the north coast of Bougainville Island at a depth of 154 km (96 miles), the USGS reported. An initial tsunami alert for several Pacific islands was wound back to cover just PNG and the neighbouring Solomon Islands and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center later said the tsunami

Indonesia watchdog says former CEO of airline Garuda a bribery suspect

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s anti-corruption agency said on Thursday it was treating the former chief executive of airline PT Garuda Indonesia Tbk as a suspect in a bribery case. Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) said in a statement the CEO of Garuda from 2005 to 2014 was suspected of taking bribes related to the purchase of planes and machines from Airbus and Rolls-Royce.

The KPK did not refer to the former CEO by name but, as is its custom, used initials - in this case “ESA”. The CEO of Garuda from 2005 to 2014 was Emirsyah Satar, who is now chairman of Indonesian conglomerate Lippo Group’s e-commerce platform MatahariMall.com. In a phone message to Reuters, Satar denied wrongdoing but said that it was the authority of the KPK to name him as a suspect and that he will respect the legal process. “As far as I know, when I was the CEO of PT Garuda Indonesia, I had never done corrupt activities and I did not receive anything that was related to my position,” Satar said. With reigning champion Novak Djokovic having been knocked out in the second round, a grand slam will head into the second week without its top two men’s seeds for the first time since the 2004 French Open. German Zverev, in the fourth round at a grand slam for the first time after a career ravaged by injury, flummoxed his contemporary with his unorthodox servevolley game and broke the Wimbledon and Olympic champion eight times over the contest. The world number 50 was helped by a below-par performance from Murray but thoroughly deserved his 7-5 5-7 6-2 6-4 victory over three and a half hours on Rod Laver Arena, which earned him a quarter-final meeting with Roger Federer or Kei Nishikori. “He deserved to win because he played great when he was down and also in the important moments,” said Briton Murray. “(He) kept coming up with great shots, there’s not too much you can do about that. Sometimes you got to say, ‘well played’. It was obviously disappointing to lose. But he did some good stuff out there.” Murray prides himself on the variety of weapons at his disposal but some, like his lob, deserted him on Sunday, while others were undermined by the lack of pace Zverev offered him to work with. Zverev served solidly and came up with 52 winners, charging the net 118 times and breaking the world number one five times in the first two sets alone. “Honestly, I was in a little coma, just serve and volleying my way through,” said Zverev. “There were some points I don’t know how I won. But somehow I made it.”

He served up his first ace to take the first set but Murray recovered to bring the match back to parity with a backhand winner down-the-line on his fifth set point in the second. If the Scot thought he was on his way out of the woods he was wrong, however, and Zverev broke him for a sixth time to take a 3-2 lead in the third, and again for 5-2 before serving out the set when Murray dumped a backhand into the net. An eighth break early in the fourth set triggered serious alarm bells among the large British contingent on Rod Laver Arena but despite their exhortations, Murray was unable to fight his way out of his funk. There were some nerves as Zverev served for the match - he netted one straightforward overhead - but he recovered his composure to go through to the quarter-finals when Murray sent a forehand long. “I got excited,” Zverev added. “It was easy to stay aggressive but it was definitely tough to stay calm ... I was surprised at how I managed to get so many first serves in. “It means the world to me and it means a lot that my family is here and my box is full.” Zverev sat in the same box on Saturday watching his 19-year-old brother Alexander, tipped by many to be a future grand slam champion, lose over five sets to Rafa Nadal. It will now be the 29-year-old older sibling, however, who will take the family name into the final week of a grand slam for the first time. LeBron James tied up Leonard for a jump ball with 13 seconds left and the Cavs down 3. James won the tip, but the ball was headed out of bounds when Kevin Love saved it and fired it behind his back inbounds. Leonard caught the pass and sprinted to the other end for the dunk and the clincher with four seconds left. LONDON - Wayne Rooney earned a collective salute from the football world on Saturday after becoming Manchester United’s most prolific goalscorer. After netting his recordbreaking 250th goal for the Premier League giants, Rooney’s achievement was lauded by Bobby Charlton, the player whose landmark he had surpassed. After watching him score a fittingly dazzling stoppage-time free kick to snatch a 1-1 draw at Stoke City, Charlton - whose England scoring record was also broken by Rooney - congratulated the United number 10 in the dressing-room. “It is an incredible achievement for his career to have Manchester United’s record and one that belonged to a legend like Bobby Charlton,” United manager Jose Mourinho said. “Now he is the man and he is a legend of Manchester United.” Charlton scored the last of his 249 United goals more than 40 years ago. “I must admit that I have become used to the honour of being the club’s all-time top goalscorer,” Charlton told the United website. “I would be lying to say that I’m not disappointed to have lost the record. However, I can honestly say that I’m delighted for Wayne. MILAN — Inspired by Diego Maradona’s visit to training, Dries Mertens led Napoli to a 2-1 victory at AC Milan in Serie A on Saturday. Mertens, who has often been compared to Maradona, provided two sublime assists to help Napoli race into a 2-0 lead, with less than 10 minutes gone at San Siro. The 29-year-old Mertens also had several chances to extend Napoli’s lead. “He sacrificed himself tonight, he was brilliant in the first half-hour, giving chances to his teammates,” Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri said. “But then he missed the goal three times in fairly easy situations. “The lad is doing very well for the team. Tonight, it was a disappointment only because of the chances he missed. But we like Dries!” Juraj Kucka reduced the deficit eight minutes from halftime and Mario Pasalic hit the crossbar but Milan, which had fought back from two goals down at Torino on Monday, couldn’t find the equalizer. CHAPECO - Thousands of fans gathered under a blazing sun in southern Brazil on Saturday as Chapecoense played their first match since most of their players were killed in an air crash in Colombia in November. The friendly against Palmeiras was the first game of the season for both sides but it was much more about symbolism and emotion than sport for a club looking to bounce back from one of football’s great tragedies. The game was halted in the 71st minute to allow fans to scream their now famous “Vamos Chape!” chant in tribute to the players and staff who perished in a plane crash in Colombia in November. The Arena Conda stadium was adorned with thousands of hand-made origami in the shape of hearts and tsurus, birds that signify health, good fortune and long life. One banner behind the goals read, “Eternal Champions, kit man to the president”, a reference to the many players and backroom staff who died. The survivors and their rela-

tives took centre stage before a ball was kicked, with Jackson Follman, the goalkeeper whose leg was amputated as a result of the crash, being presented with the Copa Sudamericana trophy in a tearful ceremony. Follman was one of only six people to survive the crash, which came as the Chapecoense squad approached Medellin to play Atletico Nacional in November’s Copa Sudamericana final. The plane ran out of fuel and hit a mountainside, killing 71 people on board, many of them players, officials and reporters on their way to the game. Chapecoense were awarded the Sudamericana title by CONMEBOL in December after the fixture was cancelled. In an emotional ceremony, the wives of the dead players were given the medals their husbands would have received.
