it took some persuading to get him to do it. As J.J. Evans on the sitcom “Good Times,” Walker shouted, “Dyno-mite!” on every episode from 1974 to 1979. Walker played the teenage son in a working-class black family living in a Chicago inner-city housing project. Director John Rich came up with the phrase, but both Walker and executive producer Norman Lear were skeptical about it. At a Television Critics Association meeting Tuesday, Walker said he told Rich that without
a story line, viewers wouldn’t buy him saying the phrase because they weren’t that stupid. But Rich told him that they were. Eventually, the phrase caught on and people waited for him to say it. Walker says that expectation never bothered him when he was performing at comedy clubs. The 66-year-old Walker continues to tour the country with his standup act. He appears in Season 4 of the “Pioneers of Television” series that debuts April 15 on PBS.

Ambron’s family withdraws works of art from Semarajaya Museum Bali Post
SEMARAPURA - Family of the famous Italian painter (late) Emilio Ambron decided to pull back the works of art from the Semarajaya Museum, Klungkung. The decision was taken after the works of art in the form of historic sculpture and painting were assessed to have not been well maintained for nearly 18 years. As planned, this polemic will be discussed on Wednesday (Jan 22) with the regent of Klungkung, artist Nyoman Gunarsa and the power holders of Carlo Polacco (wife of the late Emilio Ambron). If the withdrawal really happens, it will become a bad precedent in the management of historic museum in Klungkung. The Head of Klungkung Culture and Tourism Agency, Wayan Sujana, admitted the request of the family of the famous Italian painter, Tuesday (Jan 21). The three power holders of Emilio Ambron’s family including Idanna Pucci (French citizen), Terence Ward (American) and Sarita Newson (Indonesian) had sent a letter to the Klungkung Culture and Tourism Agency on January 5. In the letter was revealed that Ambron had donated 68 works of art with the theme of Bali in a variety of media such as oil painting, sculpture, drawing, charcoal, pastel and watercolor in 1996. Ambron assessed that Klungkung at that time had good intention for showcasing his works of art as it played an important role in the history of Bali. “At that time, the works of art of Ambron were facilitated by Nyoman Gunarsa to be brought to Bali where there was a twin town program between the town of Semarapura and a town in Italy,” said Sujana. However, in recent years, Ambron’s family in Italy claimed to fear for the collection. Ambron’s family also provided considerable cost for renovation in 2001 and 2009. It included the effort for the cleaning and maintenance of the works of art. After making the last observation on January 3, the family assessed that the environment of Semarajaya Museum was no longer suitable for the venue of the art collection of Ambron. Many paintings had been badly damaged. Even, some of the images had been destroyed. Ambron’s family was disappointed with the two rooms where the works of Ambron were showcased because the historic museum was even filled with bird droppings. In terms of protection against the works, it was considered to be absolutely no longer qualified venue for the collection of historical objects. “The works of Ambron have not been listed as a regional asset,” he said. High humidity also affected all drawings and watercolor paintings of Ambron, so they became damaged. Some fans seemed unused as well. Besides, 12 floodlights were not turned on. As consequence, when Carla Polacco was still alive, she worried about the fate of the works of art belonging to her husband. Other than through letter, the three power holders had also met with the Head of Klungkung Culture and Tourism Agency in person. They deplored

As planned, the regent would invite relevant parties to discuss about the fate of the works of art of Ambron showcased in the Semarajaya Museum, Wednesday (Jan 22) in meeting room of the regent. The regent invited the painter from Banda village Nyoman Gunarsa, the three power holders as well as a number of relevant parties. Favehotel opens in Bogor Subak irrigation water inundates school yard Bali Post
SINGARAJA - West courtyard of the SDN 1 Baktiseraga elementary school, Buleleng, has always been hit by flood every day since the rainy season. The floods occurred because the irrigation channel belonging to Subak Lobong, Baktiseraga village, Buleleng and Subak Uma Panji, Sukasada, is clogged by rubbish so the water overflows and floods the school yard. As a result, the students got difficulties to play and the school yard looked dirty due to the overflowing water of the subak irrigation that also brought along plastic waste from the surrounding residential areas. As field observation on Tuesday (Jan 21), it was found that the irrigation channel was located in the south of the SDN 1 Baktiseraga, Buleleng, right at the boundary of the school that had not been protected with compound wall. The irrigation channel looked so narrow and even was covered by rubbish and tree trunk washed away by water when it rained. The adequately great volume of water then overflowed and inundated the backyard of the SDN 1 Baktiseraga. Other than water, the schoolyard usually used to play by students at break time changed to look dirty and exuded unpleasant smell of rotting rubbish. Such atmosphere quite disturbed the learning and teaching process at the school. Principal of the SDN 1 Baktiseraga, Putu Ada, when met at his office last Tuesday confirmed if his school had always been hit by flood since the rainy season. He added the problem had been going on since long time, but had not received attention for improvement from subak group that used the irrigation water. Meanwhile, for the handling in the school yard, his party had submitted a proposal to the Buleleng Education Agency to request the construction of school compound wall, so the school would be saved from floods during rainy season. But when submitted, the Education Agency recommended prioritizing the repair of classroom. Against such condition, his party could not do much and could only resign even though he and other teachers were anxious if greater water would inundate the school yard when it rained. Even, the water inundated the classroom as the volume of water from the subak irrigation was large enough. Luckily, at that time the water did not soak up the equipment in the classroom. “The irrigation channel has been left damaged for long time and the water flooded the school. As a result, students cannot play because the school yard is wet and full of rubbish. We have also reported the issue to the Education Agency so as to be built a compound wall but there is no follow up whereas it has been surveyed,” he said. He added in addition to waiting for the construction of compound wall to anticipate floods, his party also planned to build classrooms in the west side designed in two-story building. Since it needed fairly large amount of budget, the proposal was then submitted to the Bali government. However, the proposal submitted over a month ago had not got any response yet. (mud)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

A spate of bird flu cases since the beginning of the year in China has experts watching closely as millions of people and poultry are on the move ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, the world’s largest annual human migration. China has reported more than 50 H7N9 infections in 2014 after the strain jumped from birds to people for the first time last year. The virus remains hard to catch and most cases have been linked to contact with poultry, but scientists worry that could change if it mutates into a form that allows it to spread easily among people. For those who track influenza, the holiday, which begins Jan. 31, is always worrying because it comes during the winter months when flu typically rages. Add that to hundreds of millions of people — and often birds — crammed together on buses and other forms of transportation going home, and it’s always a bit of a gamble. China estimates 3.6 billion trips will be taken over the holiday season. “This is the first winter we’ve seen H7N9. We are in uncharted territory,” said Gregory Hartl, World Health Organization spokesman in Geneva. “We have seen an upstart in cases, which we are attributing basically to the fact that it’s winter. That combined with a lot of movement of people in crowded trains
with chickens could give rise to a lot more infections, but we’ve also seen in past years where it hasn’t.” The first H7N9 cases were reported in late March near Shanghai, and more than 200 others have since been identified, including some 50 deaths. A 31-year-old doctor became one of the latest fatalities, raising fears he may have been infected at the hospital where he worked, but none of his patients or other close contacts have reported flu symptoms, according to the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning. There have been a handful of family clusters, but WHO says no sustained human-to-human transmission has occurred. However, scientists warn that the H7N9 virus contains genetic markers that could help it infect mammals easier than other avian flus. Infected birds also do not show symptoms, making it harder to track the disease. Cases declined in China over the summer, which is typically slower for influenza viruses, after some local live poultry markets were temporarily closed. In Hong Kong, which has
logged three cases, officials will test all poultry for the virus beginning later this week. Taiwan has reported two cases. In past years, it was the H5N1 bird flu virus that spiked during this time of year. That strain, which has killed at least 386 people since 2003, is still circulating widely in poultry stocks and kills about 60 percent of the people it infects. On Tuesday, Vietnam, which has long battled the virus, confirmed its first H5N1 death in nine months. Earlier in January, the first human case was reported in North America after a person traveling back from a trip to Beijing became ill and died in Canada. Both bird flus cause high fever and respiratory problems, including pneumonia and shortness of breath. Scientists have repeatedly warned that the viruses cannot be ignored because of their potential to possibly spark a global pandemic. But after years of campaigning in countries where it’s common for chickens and pigs to live closely with people, sometimes in the same house, that message is often a hard sell.

HOUSTON — They quibble, joke and share knowing looks, finishing each other’s thoughts and making snide comments — like many sisters. But a recent heated argument was unlike any other they’ve had, and it ended in a most surprising way. For months, 71-year-old Irma Myers-Santana and her younger sister, Anna Williamson, 69, had been debating who more urgently needed a lung transplant, each wanting the other to go first. Earlier this month, though, the sisters ended up in the same operating room, each getting one lung from the same donor in what doctors at Houston Methodist Hospital say is a first for their facility. “It’s never happened. ... We’ve transplanted siblings before, but years apart,” said Dr. Scott Scheinin, who did Myers-Santana’s transplant. “It’s a little bit of serendipity.” The sisters both became ill about 10 years ago with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a little-understood scarring of the lungs that often requires a transplant and kills more people than breast cancer every year, said Scheinin. Doctors, assisted by a computer program, look at blood type, height and severity of illness to match a donor and a transplant patient. The likelihood that Myers-Santana and Williamson would meet all three criteria at the same time was small, Scheinin said. The sisters’ situation was further complicated because they insisted on a “bloodless transplant.” They are Jehovah’s Witnesses and do not believe in receiving blood transfusions. They live in California, but Houston Memorial is the only hospital in the country that does such transplants. “The irony of this whole thing is that we’re sisters, we’re both Jehovah’s Witnesses, we have the same blood type and we got (the lungs) from the same donor,” Williamson said, her eyes tearing up as she sat next to her sister, able for the first time in years to complete a sentence without coughing. “It’s a miracle to have all those things lined up like that,” Williamson said. Until the transplant, Williamson coughed all day and had to be attached to an oxygen tank constantly. About a year ago, her doctor told her she needed a transplant. “I couldn’t talk; I couldn’t laugh,” Williamson recalled.

DENPASAR - The Labor and Social Agency has just successfully earned as much as IDR 112,530,000 from the renewal of foreign worker use permit (IMTA). Since the beginning of January 2014, the foreign workers who have renewed their permit reached nine people of the estimated amount of 563 people. “Since the enforcement of this regional bylaw, there have been nine foreign workers who extended their working permit. Among them, seven workers made one-year extension, a worker made threemonth extension and another worker made seven-month extension,” explained the Head of Denpasar Labour and Social Agency, Made Erwin Suryadharma Sena, in Denpasar. According to him, foreign workers that had fulfilled their obligation according to the rules set forth in the Regional Bylaw No.8/2013 were dominated by workers of the companies in the fishery sector based in Benoa such as the Bali Mina Utama and Lingsar Buana Samudra. “We ask all the companies employing foreigners to immediately renew their working permit on time. They do not need to use a broker provided that the requirements specified have been met and the permit will surely be issued,” he said. He added the amount levied was USD 100. However, it was payable in rupiah at the prevailing exchange rate at the time of payment. The fund collected from foreign workers would later be incorporated into the local treasury. “Payment procedures of the working permit extension will be governed by a Mayoral Regulation. The draft has been prepared in coordination with the municipal legal division. In the Mayoral Regulation will be set forth who are subject to the levy and the amount to be paid,” he said. He mentioned the regional bylaw also set forth about the sanctions. If the company employing foreign workers did not pay on time or paid in less amount would be subject to administrative sanctions such as the interest rate of 2 percent per month of the unpaid levy. “Then, any levy payers do not perform their obligations will be subject to imprisonment for 3 months or a fine of three times the amount of payable levy,” he said. His party set a revenue target from the foreign worker permit renewal at IDR 1 billion in 2014. The target was set small because the policy was first enacted in Denpasar. “Since it is the first time for us to collect the IMTA levy, we do not put up lofty targets. This revenue is greatly affected by the number of foreigners who extend their permit,” he said. (kmb27)

Bali government only allocates IDR 1.5 billion for the cost of tourism promotion in 2014. That number continues to decline. Chairman of the Indonesian Tourism Industry Association (GIPI) of Bali, Ngurah Wijaya, assessed the lack of tourism promotion fund would hamper the efforts to attract travelers to visit the Island of the Gods. “Promotion fund is only some few. I also wonder why some lineups of the government do not consider the campaign an important thing,” said Ngurah Wijaya. According to him, Bali should target the travelers with middle and high spending money because the Bali tourism was based on culture. The culture was life and the Balinese life was based on culture and Hinduism. “Tourist market having high and middle purchasing power exists virtually in all countries and then it highly depends on how we are targeting that market. Our
weakness in Bali lies in the inadequate budget used for making campaign,” he said. A tourism expert from the Udayana University, I Putu Anom, also admitted that Bali still had to be promoted although the fund budgeted only reached IDR 1.5 billion. “The strategies and method of promotion are not necessarily made overseas by involving many participants. Promotion can be undertaken via the Internet, electronic media, print media at home and overseas,” he said. According to him, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy should also promote Indonesia, including Bali as the major and leading tourist destination of Indonesian. International events throughout the year 2013 such as the Miss World, WCF, WTO and
the Bali Democracy Forum had also become an effective means of promoting Bali. “The Regional Tourism Promotion Board (BPPD) of Bali in cooperation with provincial and county/municipal tourism agency and the GIPI must be observant and careful to promote Bali in the countries becoming the potential prospects to be chosen from,” he suggested. He said all the academicians, humanists and communities invited to go abroad should also play a role to promote Bali. “Though the budget of promotion is small, we must be efficient and well targeted. Before a month has gone by, amid the uncertain weather condition, Gianyar County has been hit by 24 occurrences of natural disasters. Within the current weather, there is possibility of the additional incident so that all elements were expected to continuously maintain vigilance against disaster. The regional working unit coalesced into the disaster mitigation was expected to improve the coordination and readiness to minimize the impact of disaster. Waletsari vessel stranded at Padangbai

AMLAPURA - Bad weather at sea and big waves hit the unlucky Waletsari vessel. Ultimately, the vessel was successfully stranded at Padangbai traditional harbor, Karangasem, Tuesday afternoon (Jan 21). No casualties were reported in the incident. Captain of the vessel, Wayan Kenten, 50, and his men Made Korman, 45, survived after being tossed around in the sea for about 30 minutes. Kenten said the vessel KSU Waletsari he skippered was transporting building materials such as cement, sand and asbestos. The vessel departed from Tribuana Harbor at Kusamba, Klungkung,
around 11:00 a.m. After sailing about 2 miles away with the destination to Nusa Lembongan, big waves suddenly hit the vessel. After that, two engines were off. As a result, the vessel with triple-engine only resumed the voyage by relying on single engine. In fact, the single engine was not strong enough to move the vessel. Eventually, the vessel was tossing for about 30 minutes. It was ultimately directed at local harbor and stranded at Padangbai traditional harbor. Kenten instantly repaired the vessel engine at the local harbor. He said if the weather at sea would be getting better, his vessel would be dispatched on Wednesday. (013)

SOCHI, Russia — Russian security officials are hunting down three potential female suicide bombers, one of whom is believed to be in Sochi, where the Winter Olympics will begin next month. Police leaflets seen by an Associated Press reporter at a central Sochi hotel on Tuesday contain warnings about three potential suicide bombers. A police letter said that one of them, Ruzanna Ibragimova, a 22-year-old widow of an Islamic militant, was at large in Sochi. A U.S. congressman who was in Sochi on Tuesday to assess the situation said he was impressed by the work of Russian security forces but troubled that potential suicide bombers had gotten into the city, despite all of the extraordinary security measures. “We know some of them got through the perimeter,” Rep. Michael McCaul, chairman of the U.S. House Homeland Security Committee, told The Associated Press. “She’s for real. What we don’t know is how many more black widows are out there.” Russian authorities have blamed the so-called “black widows” of slain insurgents for previous suicide attacks in the country. The Black Sea resort town will host the games amid concerns about security and potential terrorist attacks. The southern city of Volgograd was rocked by two suicide bombings in late December, which killed 34 and injured scores more.
An Islamic militant group in Dagestan posted a video on Sunday claiming responsibility for the bombings and threatened to strike the games in Sochi, about 500 kilometers (300 miles) west of Dagestan. McCaul, a Republican from Texas, said he had numerous meetings with officials in Moscow and Sochi, and was briefed by the joint operation center in Sochi, which is responsible for overall security in the area. “The one improvement I would ask of the Russians is to allow our intelligence services to coordinate and cooperate better with theirs,” McCaul said. Although the Russian side was confident that it could provide security, the U.S. has information that could help keep the games safe, he said. The congressman also expressed concern that terrorists could have gotten into Sochi before security was tightened. “How many potential cells could be in Sochi and the Olympic village?” he said. “But after ‘the ring of steel’ was implemented we have this one person who seems to have been able to penetrate it. It does demonstrate vulnerability.” Police material distributed to the hotel staff included pictures of two other women in veils: 26year-old Zaira Aliyeva and 34year-old Dzhannet Tsakhayeva. It said they had been trained “to perpetrate acts of terrorism.” It warned that the two women “are probably among us,” but, unlike Ibragimova’s case, did not say if they are in Sochi.
BANGKOK - Gunmen shot and wounded a top leader of a major pro-government movement in northern Thailand on Wednesday, as demonstrators pushing to overthrow the prime minister defied the start of a state of emergency imposed in the capital to cope with the nation’s increasingly bloody political crisis. Kwanchai Praipana was shot twice and hospitalized after gunmen in a pickup truck sprayed bursts of gunfire at his home in Udon Thani, according to another leader of the group, Jutaporn Promphan. The government announced the state of emergency late Tuesday in the wake of a string of attacks that have mostly been aimed at demonstrators protesting peacefully in Bangkok. With landmark Syrian peace talks opening just down the road and both Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu due to drop into the Swiss Alpine resort later in the week, the volatile situation in the Middle East will weigh heavily on this year’s World Economic Forum. But the focus of the first full day reflects a more traditional business agenda with participants debating issues including the relationship between Africa’s economic and population growth, and the fallout from Edward Snowden’s revelations about the extent of the United States and other governments’ snooping on Internet users across the globe. Japan’s premier is to deliver a keynote address that will offer an update on the progress of “Abenomics”, his ambitious bid to end two decades of deflation, and may also touch on current tensions with China. Abe’s presence in Davos is part of an ongoing drive to raise his international profile as Japan seeks to win a global ‘soft diplomacy’ battle for hearts and minds in a dispute with Beijing over disputed islands in the East China Sea. Tensions have come precariously close to boiling over on several occasions over the last couple of years and were reignited last month when Abe visited the Yasukuni shrine, which honours Japan’s war dead, including convicted war criminals. DENPASAR - Coffee growers received a higher price for coffee beans in the Bali , up Rp2000 to Rp34,000 per kilogram of arabica and to Rp27,000 per kg of robusta. Main coffee producing areas in Bali include Tabanan, Buleleng, Jembrana, Bangli and Gianyar. The farmers were encouraged with the prospect of higher profit, head of the regional plantation office I Dewa Made Buana Duwuran said. I Dewa Made said the prices of Bali’s coffee have always better than the average price in international market as the farmers have been consistent in maintaining good quality. Farmers grouped in a farm organization called Subak, have always been reminded to pick only fully ripe beans to guarantee quality, he said. There are 1,127 coffee farmers grouped in Subak in Bali, he added. Meanwhile, the price of clove is stable at Rp135,000 per kg in Bali. The farmers, mainly in Buleleng welcome the price though it is not yet up to a previous peak of Rp200,000 per kg, a local farmer said . The farmers in Buleleng hope that the price will pick up as supply is declining as a result of plant disease.

SANUR - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has called on the Indonesian National Construction Association (Gapensi) to make use of every opportunity to improve competitiveness. “I hope you can continue to improve competitiveness in your efforts to respond to the challenges posed by this globalization era,” the president said when opening the 13th Gapensi National Conference recently. Speaking to some 800 construction entrepreneurs attending the conference, the head of state pointed out that Indonesia has a lot of opportunities to achieve the best results following the rise in gross domestic product and per capita income. He noted that over the past nine years, state expenditure has increased significantly by three to four fold compared to that in 2005. According to him, Indonesia’s economic growth remains positive, or the highest after China in the G-20 economic group, although that of many other countries has turned negative.
On the occasion, the head of state also encouraged the construction entrepreneurs in the country to continue to play their role in ensuring the success of the Master Plan for Acceleration and Expansion of Indonesia’s Economic Development (MP3EI), which coordinates infrastructure development for the improvement of connectivity. President Yudhoyono said the government was in need of private support to improve 70 percent of the infrastructure development plan in Indonesia. Meanwhile, Gapensi Central Executive Board Chairman Aji Soeharsojo claimed the Gapensi conference aims to produce a policy package that will strengthen the national construction industry. KUTA - The number of diabetes patients in Indonesia rose from 8 million in 2011 to 8.5 million in 2013, becoming the seventh largest in the world, according to Persadia. “Ninety percent of diabetes in Indonesia is classified under Category II, meaning it is caused by hereditary factors, Persadia’s (Indonesia Diabetes Association) chairman Prof Sidartawan Soedondo said on the sidelines of the “Global Diabetes Forum”. He noted that children, teenagers and young adults were susceptible to Category II diabetes. “Diabetes suffered by the youth is mostly caused by unhealthy lifestyles,” he added. Sidartawan noted that unhealthy lifestyles could cause becoming overweight, which often contributes to diabetes. “Other factors triggering diabetes are
urbanization and lack of physical activities,” he said. Sidartawan estimated that 5.7 percent of the country’s population suffered from diabetes. “Symptoms of diabetes are not seen and the disease will only be detected after it has become chronic,” he said. Even based upon his research, 70 percent of the country’s population is not aware that they suffer from diabetes, he added. He considered the spread of the disease in the country to be a matter of concern because people usually seek treatment only after their disease has become chronic. To detect the risk factors, he said people must check early and periodically so that the prevalence for diabetes could be curbed. “Once one suffers from diabetes, his or her suffering might be lifelong,” he said.

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran unplugged banks of centrifuges involved in its most sensitive uranium enrichment work on Monday, prompting the United States and European Union to partially lift economic sanctions as a landmark deal aimed at easing concerns over Iran’s nuclear program went into effect. The mutual actions — curbing atomic work in exchange for some sanctions relief — start a six-month clock for Tehran and the world powers to negotiate a final accord that the Obama administration and its European allies say will be intended to ensure Iran cannot build a nuclear weapon. In the meantime, the interim deal puts limits on Iran’s program — though it continues low levels of uranium enrichment. Tehran denies its nuclear program is intended to produce a bomb. The payoff to Iran is an injection of billions of dollars into its crippled economy over the next six months from the suspension of some sanctions — though other sanctions remain in place. In part a reflection of a thaw between Washington and Tehran, the moves coincidentally occurred on the 33rd anniversary of the end of the Iran hostage crisis. The holding of 52 Americans for 444 days by radical Iranian students that ended Jan. 20, 1981 was followed by more than decades of U.S.-Iranian enmity that only began to ease last year with signs that Iran was ready to meet U.S. demands and scale back its nuclear activities. British Foreign Secretary William Hague called the deal “an important
milestone” — but not the ultimate goal. “It’s important that other sanctions are maintained and the pressure is maintained for a comprehensive and final settlement on the Iranian nuclear issue,” Hague said. The Europeans are aiming to start negotiations on a final deal in February, though no date or venue has been agreed on yet. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Saturday that Tehran is ready to enter talks as soon as the interim deal goes into force. In the first step of the interim accord, Iranian state TV said authorities disconnected cascades of centrifuges producing 20-percent enriched uranium at the Natanz facility in central Iran. The broadcast said international inspectors were on hand to witness the stoppage before leaving to monitor suspension of enrichment at Fordo, another site in central Iran. Iran also started Monday to convert part of its stockpile of 20-percent en-
riched uranium to oxide, which can be used to produce nuclear fuel but is difficult to reconvert for weapons use, the official IRNA news agency said. After receiving independent confirmation of the steps from the United Nations watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, EU foreign ministers in Brussels approved the partial sanctions suspension. The White House also announced the suspension of some American sanctions on Iran. “These actions represent the first time in nearly a decade that Iran has verifiably enacted measures to halt progress on its nuclear program, and roll it back in key respects,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said in a statement. He said Iran is also providing U.N. inspectors with increased transparency, including more frequent and intrusive inspections. “Taken together, these concrete actions represent an important step forward,” he said.

SURABAYA - A British woman was jailed for 14 years Wednesday but escaped the death penalty after admitting that she smuggled crystal methamphetamine into Indonesia from China. Andrea Waldeck, a former police worker, was found guilty and sentenced at the court in the city of Surabaya, in the east of Indonesia’s main island of Java. The sentence was lower than prosecutors’ recommendation of 16 years for the 43-year-old, who had smuggled 1.5 kilograms (three pounds) of crystal meth into Indonesia. She could have received the death sentence for smuggling that quantity of drugs under Indonesian anti-narcotics laws, which are some of the toughest in the world. “Andrea Waldeck has been proven legally and convincingly guilty of offering to sell or become a middle person to sell drugs,” said presiding judge Faturrachman, who like many Indonesians goes by one name. He handed her a 14-year sentence and ordered her to pay a two-billionrupiah (around $167,000) fine. Waldeck admitted at a previous hearing that she had smuggled the drugs into Indonesia, arriving at Surabaya airport from China. In a hearing earlier this month, she said was ashamed of her actions.
She was arrested late April at a hotel in Surabaya, Indonesia’s second-biggest city, according to her indictment. She had arrived a day earlier at the city’s airport from China and managed to get past security with the drugs concealed in four plastic packages inside her underwear, the indictment said. Two members of a drugs gang had been en route to the hotel to pick up the narcotics -- but police knew about the plan and managed to get there first and arrest Waldeck, it said. She claimed that her boyfriend in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou had asked her to traffic the drugs in exchange for $5,000, according to her indictment. She had had previously worked in southwestern England as a police community support officer, a parttime member of the force with limited powers. Her case comes after British grandmother Lindsay Sandiford was sentenced to death in January last year after she was caught trying to bring $2.4 million worth of cocaine into the Indonesian resort island of Bali.

SRAGEN - Hong Kong police Tuesday interviewed an Indonesian maid who was allegedly tortured by her employer in the Chinese city, as the Indonesian president phoned the helper to express his sorrow at the “tragedy”. It came a day after police in Hong Kong arrested a woman accused of abusing the maid, Erwiana Sulistyaningsih, and a second Indonesian helper, as she attempted to board a flight to Thailand at the city’s airport. Sulistyaningsih, 23, was reportedly abused over a period of eight months while employed by the woman. Media reports said she was unable to walk due to her injuries when she flew home from Hong Kong this month.
The case has renewed concern about the treatment of maids in Hong Kong and follows a spate of domestic helper abuse cases and strong criticism from rights groups. A team of Hong Kong police arrived late Monday in Sragen, on Indonesia’s main island of Java, where the maid was hospitalised. On Tuesday they arrived at the hospital to take a formal statement from the maid. As they arrived the maid’s father Rohmat Saputro, 50, told reporters: “I am sure that my daughter will find justice.” Hong Kong police chief inspector Chung Chi-ming said: “We will be focusing our efforts on getting a statement from the victim today and we hope we can finish this as soon as possible so she does not have to
experience any unnecessary pain.” The case has provoked anger in Indonesia, with officials threatening to review the placement of maids in Hong Kong if the city does not treat the case seriously. On Tuesday President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono spoke to Sulistyaningsih and her father on the phone. “Believe me, the law will be enforced, justice will be served, what’s important is we will help with (your) treatment,” he told the maid. World Cup venue in danger of not being ready Associated Press Writer
SAO PAULO — FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke is giving Brazilian organizers only a few more weeks to show that the stadium in Curitiba will be ready in time for the World Cup. Valcke showed real concern about the pace of construction at the Arena da Baixada after visiting the southern city on Tuesday, saying that work there is more than late. He said he believes the stadium will make it, but declined to guarantee it will be part of the tournament that begins in June. Valcke said local organizers have until Feb. 18 to demonstrate that the work can be completed in time. “What we are expecting is that these technicians will work from now up to the 18th of February and by the 18th of February they will say, ‘OK, guys, it’s fine,’” Valcke said. Most of the delay at the venue, which was about 90 percent completed, was blamed on difficulties getting the needed funding for the construction. The stadium is being built mainly by local club Atletico Paranaense. “For the time being, I trust that the decisions that have been made today will give us Curitiba as one of the host cities,” Valcke told a news conference. “It will be a difficult birth, but at the end we will have a baby.” Brazil’s deputy sports minister Luis Fernandes said that after Tuesday’s visit it was clear something had to be done to guarantee Curitiba as a host city. “With the current pace of construction, the stadium would not be ready in time,” Fernandes said, adding that more workers are expected to be added to the construction site to try to get the venue ready. The trip to Curitiba was not originally scheduled for this week’s inspection tour by FIFA, but football’s governing body added a stop there after receiving the latest construction report from local organizers. Valcke was initially expected to go to the jungle city of Manaus. Australia is scheduled to play defending champion Spain at Curitiba on June 23. On Wednesday, Football Federation Australia said it was concerned and will contact FIFA for more advice on the issue. “The prospect of matches being moved from Curitiba raises serious concerns, particularly for Socceroo fans who have secured tickets and made flight and hotel bookings,” an FFA spokesman said.

World Cup venue in danger of not being ready Associated Press Writer
SAO PAULO — FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke is giving Brazilian organizers only a few more weeks to show that the stadium in Curitiba will be ready in time for the World Cup. Valcke showed real concern about the pace of construction at the Arena da Baixada after visiting the southern city on Tuesday, saying that work there is more than late. He said he believes the stadium will make it, but declined to guarantee it will be part of the tournament that begins in June. Valcke said local organizers have until Feb. 18 to demonstrate that the work can be completed in time. “What we are expecting is that these technicians will work from now up to the 18th of February and by the 18th of February they will say, ‘OK, guys, it’s fine,’” Valcke said. Most of the delay at the venue, which was about 90 percent completed, was blamed on difficulties getting the needed funding for the construction. The stadium is being built mainly by local club Atletico Paranaense. “For the time being, I trust that the decisions that have been made today will give us Curitiba as one of the host cities,” Valcke told a news conference. “It will be a difficult birth, but at the end we will have a baby.” Brazil’s deputy sports minister Luis Fernandes said that after Tuesday’s visit it was clear something had to be done to guarantee Curitiba as a host city. “With the current pace of construction, the stadium would not be ready in time,” Fernandes said, adding that more workers are expected to be added to the construction site to try to get the venue ready. The trip to Curitiba was not originally scheduled for this week’s inspection tour by FIFA, but football’s governing body added a stop there after receiving the latest construction report from local organizers. Valcke was initially expected to go to the jungle city of Manaus. Australia is scheduled to play defending champion Spain at Curitiba on June 23. On Wednesday, Football Federation Australia said it was concerned and will contact FIFA for more advice on the issue. “The prospect of matches being moved from Curitiba raises serious concerns, particularly for Socceroo fans who have secured tickets and made flight and hotel bookings,” an FFA spokesman said.

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran unplugged banks of centrifuges involved in its most sensitive uranium enrichment work on Monday, prompting the United States and European Union to partially lift economic sanctions as a landmark deal aimed at easing concerns over Iran’s nuclear program went into effect. The mutual actions — curbing atomic work in exchange for some sanctions relief — start a six-month clock for Tehran and the world powers to negotiate a final accord that the Obama administration and its European allies say will be intended to ensure Iran cannot build a nuclear weapon. In the meantime, the interim deal puts limits on Iran’s program — though it continues low levels of uranium enrichment. Tehran denies its nuclear program is intended to produce a bomb. The payoff to Iran is an injection of billions of dollars into its crippled economy over the next six months from the suspension of some sanctions — though other sanctions remain in place. In part a reflection of a thaw between Washington and Tehran, the moves coincidentally occurred on the 33rd anniversary of the end of the Iran hostage crisis. The holding of 52 Americans for 444 days by radical Iranian students that ended Jan. 20, 1981 was followed by more than decades of U.S.-Iranian enmity that only began to ease last year with signs that Iran was ready to meet U.S. demands and scale back its nuclear activities. British Foreign Secretary William Hague called the deal “an important
milestone” — but not the ultimate goal. “It’s important that other sanctions are maintained and the pressure is maintained for a comprehensive and final settlement on the Iranian nuclear issue,” Hague said. The Europeans are aiming to start negotiations on a final deal in February, though no date or venue has been agreed on yet. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Saturday that Tehran is ready to enter talks as soon as the interim deal goes into force. In the first step of the interim accord, Iranian state TV said authorities disconnected cascades of centrifuges producing 20-percent enriched uranium at the Natanz facility in central Iran. The broadcast said international inspectors were on hand to witness the stoppage before leaving to monitor suspension of enrichment at Fordo, another site in central Iran. Iran also started Monday to convert part of its stockpile of 20-percent en-
riched uranium to oxide, which can be used to produce nuclear fuel but is difficult to reconvert for weapons use, the official IRNA news agency said. After receiving independent confirmation of the steps from the United Nations watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, EU foreign ministers in Brussels approved the partial sanctions suspension. The White House also announced the suspension of some American sanctions on Iran. “These actions represent the first time in nearly a decade that Iran has verifiably enacted measures to halt progress on its nuclear program, and roll it back in key respects,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said in a statement. SURABAYA - A British woman was jailed for 14 years Wednesday but escaped the death penalty after admitting that she smuggled crystal methamphetamine into Indonesia from China. Andrea Waldeck, a former police worker, was found guilty and sentenced at the court in the city of Surabaya, in the east of Indonesia’s main island of Java. The sentence was lower than prosecutors’ recommendation of 16 years for the 43-year-old, who had smuggled 1.5 kilograms (three pounds) of crystal meth into Indonesia. She could have received the death sentence for smuggling that quantity of drugs under Indonesian anti-narcotics laws, which are some of the toughest in the world. “Andrea Waldeck has been proven legally and convincingly guilty of offering to sell or become a middle person to sell drugs,” said presiding judge Faturrachman, who like many Indonesians goes by one name. He handed her a 14-year sentence and ordered her to pay a two-billionrupiah (around $167,000) fine. Waldeck admitted at a previous hearing that she had smuggled the drugs into Indonesia, arriving at Surabaya airport from China. In a hearing earlier this month, she said was ashamed of her actions.
She was arrested late April at a hotel in Surabaya, Indonesia’s second-biggest city, according to her indictment. She had arrived a day earlier at the city’s airport from China and managed to get past security with the drugs concealed in four plastic packages inside her underwear, the indictment said. Two members of a drugs gang had been en route to the hotel to pick up the narcotics -- but police knew about the plan and managed to get there first and arrest Waldeck, it said. She claimed that her boyfriend in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou had asked her to traffic the drugs in exchange for $5,000, according to her indictment. She had had previously worked in southwestern England as a police community support officer, a parttime member of the force with limited powers. Her case comes after British grandmother Lindsay Sandiford was sentenced to death in January last year after she was caught trying to bring $2.4 million worth of cocaine into the Indonesian resort island of Bali.

The other 11 victims were identified by their names as Sowondo and his wife, Tarmuji and his wife, Asrori, his wife and their child, and Mursidi, his wife and their two children. SRAGEN - Hong Kong police Tuesday interviewed an Indonesian maid who was allegedly tortured by her employer in the Chinese city, as the Indonesian president phoned the helper to express his sorrow at the “tragedy”. It came a day after police in Hong Kong arrested a woman accused of abusing the maid, Erwiana Sulistyaningsih, and a second Indonesian helper, as she attempted to board a flight to Thailand at the city’s airport. Sulistyaningsih, 23, was reportedly abused over a period of eight months while employed by the woman. Media reports said she was unable to walk due to her injuries when she flew home from Hong Kong this month.
The case has renewed concern about the treatment of maids in Hong Kong and follows a spate of domestic helper abuse cases and strong criticism from rights groups. A team of Hong Kong police arrived late Monday in Sragen, on Indonesia’s main island of Java, where the maid was hospitalised. On Tuesday they arrived at the hospital to take a formal statement from the maid. As they arrived the maid’s father Rohmat Saputro, 50, told reporters: “I am sure that my daughter will find justice.” Hong Kong police chief inspector Chung Chi-ming said: “We will be focusing our efforts on getting a statement from the victim today and we hope we can finish this as soon as possible so she does not have to
experience any unnecessary pain.” The case has provoked anger in Indonesia, with officials threatening to review the placement of maids in Hong Kong if the city does not treat the case seriously. DENPASAR - Coffee growers received a higher price for coffee beans in the Bali , up Rp2000 to Rp34,000 per kilogram of arabica and to Rp27,000 per kg of robusta. Main coffee producing areas in Bali include Tabanan, Buleleng, Jembrana, Bangli and Gianyar. The farmers were encouraged with the prospect of higher profit, head of the regional plantation office I Dewa Made Buana Duwuran said. I Dewa Made said the prices of Bali’s coffee have always better than the average price in international market as the farmers have been consistent in maintaining good quality. Farmers grouped in a farm organization called Subak, have always been reminded to pick only fully ripe beans to guarantee quality, he said. There are 1,127 coffee farmers grouped in Subak in Bali, he added. Meanwhile, the price of clove is stable at Rp135,000 per kg in Bali. The farmers, mainly in Buleleng welcome the price though it is not yet up to a previous peak of Rp200,000 per kg, a local farmer said . The farmers in Buleleng hope that the price will pick up as supply is declining as a result of plant disease.

SANUR - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has called on the Indonesian National Construction Association (Gapensi) to make use of every opportunity to improve competitiveness. “I hope you can continue to improve competitiveness in your efforts to respond to the challenges posed by this globalization era,” the president said when opening the 13th Gapensi National Conference recently. Speaking to some 800 construction entrepreneurs attending the conference, the head of state pointed out that Indonesia has a lot of opportunities to achieve the best results following the rise in gross domestic product and per capita income. He noted that over the past nine years, state expenditure has increased significantly by three to four fold compared to that in 2005. According to him, Indonesia’s economic growth remains positive, or the highest after China in the G-20 economic group, although that of many other countries has turned negative.
On the occasion, the head of state also encouraged the construction entrepreneurs in the country to continue to play their role in ensuring the success of the Master Plan for Acceleration and Expansion of Indonesia’s Economic Development (MP3EI), which coordinates infrastructure development for the improvement of connectivity. President Yudhoyono said the government was in need of private support to improve 70 percent of the infrastructure development plan in Indonesia. KUTA - The number of diabetes patients in Indonesia rose from 8 million in 2011 to 8.5 million in 2013, becoming the seventh largest in the world, according to Persadia. “Ninety percent of diabetes in Indonesia is classified under Category II, meaning it is caused by hereditary factors, Persadia’s (Indonesia Diabetes Association) chairman Prof Sidartawan Soedondo said on the sidelines of the “Global Diabetes Forum”. He noted that children, teenagers and young adults were susceptible to Category II diabetes. “Diabetes suffered by the youth is mostly caused by unhealthy lifestyles,” he added. Sidartawan noted that unhealthy lifestyles could cause becoming overweight, which often contributes to diabetes. “Other factors triggering diabetes are
urbanization and lack of physical activities,” he said. Sidartawan estimated that 5.7 percent of the country’s population suffered from diabetes. “Symptoms of diabetes are not seen and the disease will only be detected after it has become chronic,” he said. Even based upon his research, 70 percent of the country’s population is not aware that they suffer from diabetes, he added. He considered the spread of the disease in the country to be a matter of concern because people usually seek treatment only after their disease has become chronic. To detect the risk factors, he said people must check early and periodically so that the prevalence for diabetes could be curbed. “Once one suffers from diabetes, his or her suffering might be lifelong,” he said.

Waletsari vessel stranded at Padangbai

AMLAPURA - Bad weather at sea and big waves hit the unlucky Waletsari vessel. Ultimately, the vessel was successfully stranded at Padangbai traditional harbor, Karangasem, Tuesday afternoon (Jan 21). No casualties were reported in the incident. Captain of the vessel, Wayan Kenten, 50, and his men Made Korman, 45, survived after being tossed around in the sea for about 30 minutes. Kenten said the vessel KSU Waletsari he skippered was transporting building materials such as cement, sand and asbestos. The vessel departed from Tribuana Harbor at Kusamba, Klungkung,
around 11:00 a.m. After sailing about 2 miles away with the destination to Nusa Lembongan, big waves suddenly hit the vessel. After that, two engines were off. As a result, the vessel with triple-engine only resumed the voyage by relying on single engine. In fact, the single engine was not strong enough to move the vessel. Eventually, the vessel was tossing for about 30 minutes. It was ultimately directed at local harbor and stranded at Padangbai traditional harbor. SOCHI, Russia — Russian security officials are hunting down three potential female suicide bombers, one of whom is believed to be in Sochi, where the Winter Olympics will begin next month. Police leaflets seen by an Associated Press reporter at a central Sochi hotel on Tuesday contain warnings about three potential suicide bombers. A police letter said that one of them, Ruzanna Ibragimova, a 22-year-old widow of an Islamic militant, was at large in Sochi. A U.S. congressman who was in Sochi on Tuesday to assess the situation said he was impressed by the work of Russian security forces but troubled that potential suicide bombers had gotten into the city, despite all of the extraordinary security measures. “We know some of them got through the perimeter,” Rep. Michael McCaul, chairman of the U.S. House Homeland Security Committee, told The Associated Press. “She’s for real. What we don’t know is how many more black widows are out there.” Russian authorities have blamed the so-called “black widows” of slain insurgents for previous suicide attacks in the country. The Black Sea resort town will host the games amid concerns about security and potential terrorist attacks. The southern city of Volgograd was rocked by two suicide bombings in late December, which killed 34 and injured scores more.
An Islamic militant group in Dagestan posted a video on Sunday claiming responsibility for the bombings and threatened to strike the games in Sochi, about 500 kilometers (300 miles) west of Dagestan. McCaul, a Republican from Texas, said he had numerous meetings with officials in Moscow and Sochi, and was briefed by the joint operation center in Sochi, which is responsible for overall security in the area. “The one improvement I would ask of the Russians is to allow our intelligence services to coordinate and cooperate better with theirs,” McCaul said. Although the Russian side was confident that it could provide security, the U.S. has information that could help keep the games safe, he said. The congressman also expressed concern that terrorists could have gotten into Sochi before security was tightened. “How many potential cells could be in Sochi and the Olympic village?” he said. “But after ‘the ring of steel’ was implemented we have this one person who seems to have been able to penetrate it. It does demonstrate vulnerability.” Police material distributed to the hotel staff included pictures of two other women in veils: 26year-old Zaira Aliyeva and 34year-old Dzhannet Tsakhayeva. It said they had been trained “to perpetrate acts of terrorism.” It warned that the two women “are probably among us,” but, unlike Ibragimova’s case, did not say if they are in Sochi.
BANGKOK - Gunmen shot and wounded a top leader of a major pro-government movement in northern Thailand on Wednesday, as demonstrators pushing to overthrow the prime minister defied the start of a state of emergency imposed in the capital to cope with the nation’s increasingly bloody political crisis. Kwanchai Praipana was shot twice and hospitalized after gunmen in a pickup truck sprayed bursts of gunfire at his home in Udon Thani, according to another leader of the group, Jutaporn Promphan. The government announced the state of emergency late Tuesday in the wake of a string of attacks that have mostly been aimed at demonstrators protesting peacefully in Bangkok. Grenade assaults on Friday and Sunday killed one man and wounded more than 60 people, bringing the casualty toll since November to at least nine dead and more than 550 hurt. The government said it enacted the emergency decree to improve security and ensure that Feb. 2 elections, opposed by protesters, are held without disruption. A spate of bird flu cases since the beginning of the year in China has experts watching closely as millions of people and poultry are on the move ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, the world’s largest annual human migration. China has reported more than 50 H7N9 infections in 2014 after the strain jumped from birds to people for the first time last year. The virus remains hard to catch and most cases have been linked to contact with poultry, but scientists worry that could change if it mutates into a form that allows it to spread easily among people. For those who track influenza, the holiday, which begins Jan. 31, is always worrying because it comes during the winter months when flu typically rages. Add that to hundreds of millions of people — and often birds — crammed together on buses and other forms of transportation going home, and it’s always a bit of a gamble. China estimates 3.6 billion trips will be taken over the holiday season. “This is the first winter we’ve seen H7N9. We are in uncharted territory,” said Gregory Hartl, World Health Organization spokesman in Geneva. “We have seen an upstart in cases, which we are attributing basically to the fact that it’s winter. That combined with a lot of movement of people in crowded trains
with chickens could give rise to a lot more infections, but we’ve also seen in past years where it hasn’t.” The first H7N9 cases were reported in late March near Shanghai, and more than 200 others have since been identified, including some 50 deaths. A 31-year-old doctor became one of the latest fatalities, raising fears he may have been infected at the hospital where he worked, but none of his patients or other close contacts have reported flu symptoms, according to the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning. There have been a handful of family clusters, but WHO says no sustained human-to-human transmission has occurred. However, scientists warn that the H7N9 virus contains genetic markers that could help it infect mammals easier than other avian flus. Infected birds also do not show symptoms, making it harder to track the disease. Cases declined in China over the summer, which is typically slower for influenza viruses, after some local live poultry markets were temporarily closed. In Hong Kong, which has
logged three cases, officials will test all poultry for the virus beginning later this week. Taiwan has reported two cases. In past years, it was the H5N1 bird flu virus that spiked during this time of year. That strain, which has killed at least 386 people since 2003, is still circulating widely in poultry stocks and kills about 60 percent of the people it infects. On Tuesday, Vietnam, which has long battled the virus, confirmed its first H5N1 death in nine months. Earlier in January, the first human case was reported in North America after a person traveling back from a trip to Beijing became ill and died in Canada. Both bird flus cause high fever and respiratory problems, including pneumonia and shortness of breath. Scientists have repeatedly warned that the viruses cannot be ignored because of their potential to possibly spark a global pandemic. But after years of campaigning in countries where it’s common for chickens and pigs to live closely with people, sometimes in the same house, that message is often a hard sell.

HOUSTON — They quibble, joke and share knowing looks, finishing each other’s thoughts and making snide comments — like many sisters. But a recent heated argument was unlike any other they’ve had, and it ended in a most surprising way. For months, 71-year-old Irma Myers-Santana and her younger sister, Anna Williamson, 69, had been debating who more urgently needed a lung transplant, each wanting the other to go first. Earlier this month, though, the sisters ended up in the same operating room, each getting one lung from the same donor in what doctors at Houston Methodist Hospital say is a first for their facility. “It’s never happened. ... We’ve transplanted siblings before, but years apart,” said Dr. Scott Scheinin, who did Myers-Santana’s transplant. “It’s a little bit of serendipity.” The sisters both became ill about 10 years ago with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a little-understood scarring of the lungs that often requires a transplant and kills more people than breast cancer every year, said Scheinin. Doctors, assisted by a computer program, look at blood type, height and severity of illness to match a donor and a transplant patient. The likelihood that Myers-Santana and Williamson would meet all three criteria at the same time was small, Scheinin said. The sisters’ situation was further complicated because they insisted on a “bloodless transplant.” They are Jehovah’s Witnesses and do not believe in receiving blood transfusions. They live in California, but Houston Memorial is the only hospital in the country that does such transplants. “The irony of this whole thing is that we’re sisters, we’re both Jehovah’s Witnesses, we have the same blood type and we got (the lungs) from the same donor,” Williamson said, her eyes tearing up as she sat next to her sister, able for the first time in years to complete a sentence without coughing. “It’s a miracle to have all those things lined up like that,” Williamson said. Until the transplant, Williamson coughed all day and had to be attached to an oxygen tank constantly. About a year ago, her doctor told her she needed a transplant. “I couldn’t talk; I couldn’t laugh,” Williamson recalled.

Since the beginning of January 2014, the foreign workers who have renewed their permit reached nine people of the estimated amount of 563 people. “Since the enforcement of this regional bylaw, there have been nine foreign workers who extended their working permit. Among them, seven workers made one-year extension, a worker made threemonth extension and another worker made seven-month extension,” explained the Head of Denpasar Labour and Social Agency, Made Erwin Suryadharma Sena, in Denpasar. According to him, foreign workers that had fulfilled their obligation according to the rules set forth in the Regional Bylaw No.8/2013 were dominated by workers of the companies in the fishery sector based in Benoa such as the Bali Mina Utama and Lingsar Buana Samudra. “We ask all the companies employing foreigners to immediately renew their working permit on time. They do not need to use a broker provided that the requirements specified have been met and the permit will surely be issued,” he said. He added the amount levied was USD 100. However, it was payable in rupiah at the prevailing exchange rate at the time of payment. The fund collected from foreign workers would later be incorporated into the local treasury. “Payment procedures of the working permit extension will be governed by a Mayoral Regulation. The draft has been prepared in coordination with the municipal legal division. In the Mayoral Regulation will be set forth who are subject to the levy and the amount to be paid,” he said. He mentioned the regional bylaw also set forth about the sanctions. If the company employing foreign workers did not pay on time or paid in less amount would be subject to administrative sanctions such as the interest rate of 2 percent per month of the unpaid levy. “Then, any levy payers do not perform their obligations will be subject to imprisonment for 3 months or a fine of three times the amount of payable levy,” he said. His party set a revenue target from the foreign worker permit renewal at IDR 1 billion in 2014. Chairman of the Indonesian Tourism Industry Association (GIPI) of Bali, Ngurah Wijaya, assessed the lack of tourism promotion fund would hamper the efforts to attract travelers to visit the Island of the Gods. “Promotion fund is only some few. I also wonder why some lineups of the government do not consider the campaign an important thing,” said Ngurah Wijaya. According to him, Bali should target the travelers with middle and high spending money because the Bali tourism was based on culture. The culture was life and the Balinese life was based on culture and Hinduism. “Tourist market having high and middle purchasing power exists virtually in all countries and then it highly depends on how we are targeting that market. Our
weakness in Bali lies in the inadequate budget used for making campaign,” he said. A tourism expert from the Udayana University, I Putu Anom, also admitted that Bali still had to be promoted although the fund budgeted only reached IDR 1.5 billion. “The strategies and method of promotion are not necessarily made overseas by involving many participants. Promotion can be undertaken via the Internet, electronic media, print media at home and overseas,” he said. According to him, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy should also promote Indonesia, including Bali as the major and leading tourist destination of Indonesian. International events throughout the year 2013 such as the Miss World, WCF, WTO and
the Bali Democracy Forum had also become an effective means of promoting Bali. “The Regional Tourism Promotion Board (BPPD) of Bali in cooperation with provincial and county/municipal tourism agency and the GIPI must be observant and careful to promote Bali in the countries becoming the potential prospects to be chosen from,” he suggested. He said all the academicians, humanists and communities invited to go abroad should also play a role to promote Bali. “Though the budget of promotion is small, we must be efficient and well targeted. Ambron’s family withdraws works of art from Semarajaya Museum Bali Post
SEMARAPURA - Family of the famous Italian painter (late) Emilio Ambron decided to pull back the works of art from the Semarajaya Museum, Klungkung. The decision was taken after the works of art in the form of historic sculpture and painting were assessed to have not been well maintained for nearly 18 years. As planned, this polemic will be discussed on Wednesday (Jan 22) with the regent of Klungkung, artist Nyoman Gunarsa and the power holders of Carlo Polacco (wife of the late Emilio Ambron). If the withdrawal really happens, it will become a bad precedent in the management of historic museum in Klungkung. The Head of Klungkung Culture and Tourism Agency, Wayan Sujana, admitted the request of the family of the famous Italian painter, Tuesday (Jan 21). The three power holders of Emilio Ambron’s family including Idanna Pucci (French citizen), Terence Ward (American) and Sarita Newson (Indonesian) had sent a letter to the Klungkung Culture and Tourism Agency on January 5. In the letter was revealed that Ambron had donated 68 works of art with the theme of Bali in a variety of media such as oil painting, sculpture, drawing, charcoal, pastel and watercolor in 1996. Ambron assessed that Klungkung at that time had good intention for showcasing his works of art as it played an important role in the history of Bali. “At that time, the works of art of Ambron were facilitated by Nyoman Gunarsa to be brought to Bali where there was a twin town program between the town of Semarapura and a town in Italy,” said Sujana. However, in recent years, Ambron’s family in Italy claimed to fear for the collection. Ambron’s family also provided considerable cost for renovation in 2001 and 2009. It included the effort for the cleaning and maintenance of the works of art. After making the last observation on January 3, the family assessed that the environment of Semarajaya Museum was no longer suitable for the venue of the art collection of Ambron. Many paintings had been badly damaged. Even, some of the images had been destroyed. Ambron’s family was disappointed with the two rooms where the works of Ambron were showcased because the historic museum was even filled with bird droppings. Favehotel opens in Bogor Subak irrigation water inundates school yard Bali Post
SINGARAJA - West courtyard of the SDN 1 Baktiseraga elementary school, Buleleng, has always been hit by flood every day since the rainy season. The floods occurred because the irrigation channel belonging to Subak Lobong, Baktiseraga village, Buleleng and Subak Uma Panji, Sukasada, is clogged by rubbish so the water overflows and floods the school yard. As a result, the students got difficulties to play and the school yard looked dirty due to the overflowing water of the subak irrigation that also brought along plastic waste from the surrounding residential areas. As field observation on Tuesday (Jan 21), it was found that the irrigation channel was located in the south of the SDN 1 Baktiseraga, Buleleng, right at the boundary of the school that had not been protected with compound wall. The irrigation channel looked so narrow and even was covered by rubbish and tree trunk washed away by water when it rained. The adequately great volume of water then overflowed and inundated the backyard of the SDN 1 Baktiseraga. Other than water, the schoolyard usually used to play by students at break time changed to look dirty and exuded unpleasant smell of rotting rubbish. Such atmosphere quite disturbed the learning and teaching process at the school. Principal of the SDN 1 Baktiseraga, Putu Ada, when met at his office last Tuesday confirmed if his school had always been hit by flood since the rainy season. He added the problem had been going on since long time, but had not received attention for improvement from subak group that used the irrigation water. Meanwhile, for the handling in the school yard, his party had submitted a proposal to the Buleleng Education Agency to request the construction of school compound wall, so the school would be saved from floods during rainy season. But when submitted, the Education Agency recommended prioritizing the repair of classroom. Against such condition, his party could not do much and could only resign even though he and other teachers were anxious if greater water would inundate the school yard when it rained. Even, the water inundated the classroom as the volume of water from the subak irrigation was large enough. Luckily, at that time the water did not soak up the equipment in the classroom. “The irrigation channel has been left damaged for long time and the water flooded the school. As a result, students cannot play because the school yard is wet and full of rubbish. We have also reported the issue to the Education Agency so as to be built a compound wall but there is no follow up whereas it has been surveyed,” he said. He added in addition to waiting for the construction of compound wall to anticipate floods, his party also planned to build classrooms in the west side designed in two-story building. Since it needed fairly large amount of budget, the proposal was then submitted to the Bali government. However, the proposal submitted over a month ago had not got any response yet. (mud)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Walker played the teenage son in a working-class black family living in a Chicago inner-city housing project. Director John Rich came up with the phrase, but both Walker and executive producer Norman Lear were skeptical about it. At a Television Critics Association meeting Tuesday, Walker said he told Rich that without
a story line, viewers wouldn’t buy him saying the phrase because they weren’t that stupid. But Rich told him that they were. Eventually, the phrase caught on and people waited for him to say it. Walker says that expectation never bothered him when he was performing at comedy clubs. The 66-year-old Walker continues to tour the country with his standup act. He appears in Season 4 of the “Pioneers of Television” series that debuts April 15 on PBS.
