LOS ANGELES - It seemed like a match made in heaven having two of the hottest young Hollywood stars, Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, working together.

However, reviews for their sci-fi romance “Passengers,” which opens in U.S. movie theaters on Wednesday, have not been kind. “Passengers” is the story of two people on a spaceship headed to a distant colony who wake up 90 years early. There is no way to go back to deep sleep, so they try to find ways to entertain themselves. Oscar-winner Lawrence, 26, who last year publicly attacked Hollywood’s female pay gap, was paid some $20 million for the movie, according to Hollywood trade publications, double that of Pratt, who has starred in action movies “Jurassic World” and “Guardians of the Galaxy.” “Passengers” also marks Lawrence’s first-ever sex scene - a prospect that made her so nervous that she told The Hollywood Reporter last year that she got “really, really drunk” before shooting it. “I found the build-up to the sex scene awkward,” Lawrence told Reuters in promotions this month for the movie. “Then when I got there I realized how un-sexual sex scenes are. You’re sitting there with everyone that you work with and you’re like ‘OK, so I guess my leg will go there’ so it was a lot of build-up for nothing.” Film critics are feeling similarly let down by the movie overall. “Passengers” has a 30-percent approval rating on review aggregator RottenTomatoes. com and has so far been overlooked in Hollywood’s awards season. Deadly Berlin Christmas Market Episode Is Latest in Europe

BERLIN - A truck driver barreled into a crowded Christmas market in Berlin on Monday night, killing at least 12 people and injuring scores more. The police believed it to be an attack, but the identity of any attackers and their motives were not immediately clear. It was the most recent deadly episode to shake Europe in the last two years. Bali remains attractive to terrorists

DENPASAR - As an international tourist destination, Bali remains attractive to terrorists. People from al over the world gather here and so any small issues about terrorist bombings mean that Bali is instantly made the center of world attention. “Bali is still attractive to terrorists -why? Because there are many people of all countries who gather here. So, in terms of location and in terms of variety of potential number of victims, it continues to get the global spotlight”., said Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, in Denpasar on Tuesday (Dec. 20). Pastika added that there is not be a lot of news coverage if terrorist bombings or terrorist acts are committed in distance or non-strategic locations. “Suppose that people in Bali light firecrackers in Kuta, this will immediately have tremendous impact the following day”, he added. According to Pastika, maintaining security in Bali requires hard work and intelligence agents must be alert around the clock and the public must be vigilant as well.

A member of Commission I of the Bali House of Representatives, Ida GK Kresna Budi, asked that all the officials in Bali raise awareness. Security forces in particular should tighten their security considering that celebrations of Christmas and New Year are around the corner. Groups that dislike the security of Bali and Indonesia in general are feared to try to create conditions of terror so as to make things feel unsafe. “Hence, all the security apparatuses in Bali should be highly vigilant, especially just before Christmas and the New Year as this time of year poses a particular risk with the regligious diversity of Indonesia. On that account, people form ll walks of life, should be working to maintinant the integrity of Bali”, he said. Kresna Budi added that people should respect the surrounding environment. Japanese Cave becoming snake nests Buried by landslides and inundated with water

SEMARAPURA - Japanese Cave located at Koripan hamlet, Banjarangkan, is now in very poor condition. Other than often buried by landslides from over the cave, when it rains various rubbish came into the cave. The rubbish was carried by flowing water on the sidewalk. No doubt, the higher sidewalk than mouth of the cave causes the water on the sidewalk to flow into the cave. After the rain flushing Klungkung, mound of landslides is often found at the cave’s lip. The 10-meter deep cave is also filled with a lot of rubbish brought from the gutter of sidewalks. Japanese Cave has 16 holes where nearly more than half is lower than the road body. When coming into the 16 caves, the entire hole will converge inside with the width of 165 meters and a length of only four meters. The room is quite spacious to be entered because the ceiling inside the cave has the height of some two meters. An attendant of the Japanese Cave heritage, Dewa Gede Wirawan, said on Tuesday (Dec. 20) the condition in the cave is free from landslides. He said the landslide only occurred outside the cave because the surface is composed of unstable soil. Conversely, the soil in the cave is hard and even composed of rocks. Although it is very safe to enter, not

all people dare to do so. Today, the Japanese Cave has become a nest of snakes. It needs high precautions when coming into the cave in order not to face or step on the snakes. According to him, the absence of lighting makes the room inside rarely cleaned up. The space inside is just a bare room without relics of Japan. The cave is quite dark and inhabited by snakes, so that he is afraid to clean up the room inside. Actually there is much rubbish inside the cave and some ruins are found in the caves having accumulated since decades ago. He hoped the arrangement to be carried out in 2017 will also include installation of lighting in the Japanese Cave. Besides, the sidewalks frequently causing water and rubbish to come into the cave could be repaired. “Flowing water from the gutter carries mud and debris into the cave so that it becomes dirty,” he said. Related to the landslide occurred at the mouth of the cave, the regional disaster mitigation agency (BPBD) of Klungkung will do cleanup in stages. “The BPBD will clean up (the avalanche). Just now, we already did a little bit and tomorrow we’ll take more from the morning,” said Chief Executive of the BPBD Klungkung, Putu Widiada, Tuesday (Dec. 20). (dwa)

Backpack bomb in Ubud safely detonated by bomb squad

GIANYAR - Residents of Ubud were appalled to hear that a backpack labeled ‘bomb’ had been found in a stall owned by 47 year old Ketut Suela, in Lungsiakan hamlet, Kedewatan, Ubud, on Tuesday (Dec. 20). Police ascertained that the backpack owned by a a Dutch citizen did in fact contain a homemade bomb, estimated to have a low explosive power. The mysterious backpack was first discovered by Ketut Suela on Tuesday morning around 6 a.m. He was very surpsired to see a bag that appeared to contain a bomb, sitting righ tin fron of his stall. “My stall opens at 4:30 in the morning, but I only saw the backpack after doing the routine cleanup in the stall”, said Suela. A few minutes later, dozens of police officers commanded the Ubud Police chief, Nyoman Wirajaya, cordened off the scene with a police line. Around 7:50 a.m., the Bali Police bomb squad arrived at the location to handle the case. The officers detected the suspicious items in the backpack and immediately detonated the bomb twice. The blast residues were brought to the Ubud Police station where it was discovered that the backpack had in fact contained a low explosive bomb. In fact it was a chain of four 7 cm firecrackers that contained ammunition. “We found the firecrackers tied together in a tin containing a timer in the form of calculator as well as a chain of charger cables, wrapped in black tape”, explained Ubud Police chief Nyoman Wirajaya.

“Once crossed check, the backpack was in fact found to belong to Mark Aart”, he said. Based on the results of the examination at the Ubud Police station, Mark Aart claimed not to know anything about the homemade bomb inside the grey backpack. He said that he just lost his backpack on Monday night, and reported it to the Ubud Police station on Tuesday morning. Local police are still investigating the restaurant where the backpack was said to have gone missing. “Our officers are still in the field. Hopefully, there are CCTVs at the restaurant and clues to uncover the perpetrators. We consider this to be a pre-meditated action as indicated by the items having been arranged in such away”, said Wirajaya. The subdistrict police chief also confirmed that the case was an act of terror deliberately committed by irresponsible parties. He said that from the initial allegation the perpetrator intentionally stole Aart Mark’s backpack. Then, the backpack containing the home-

made bomb was placed in Ketut Suela’s stall. “We estimate the bomb to have had low explosive power, however it was placed near a Pertamini petrol outlet -about two meters away. So even a small explosion could have been hazardous”, he said. As of monday afternoon, Mark Aart was still being interrogated at the Ubud Police Station. The Police chief confirmed that the Dutch traveller cannot be determined to be the perpertrator or suspect in this case.“We have not determined the perpetrator as we are still investigating”, he said. Chief of the Gianyar Police, Waluya appealed to the public to be more aware and sensitive to the actions of all newcomers. Entrepreneurs are also urged to install CCTVs facing the street, so that they are not only facing the cashier. “If there is anything suspicious, do not hesitate to report it immediately”, he urged. His institution will hold Operation Great Candle 2016 to safeguard celebrations of Christmas and the New Year. This operation will be held from December 23 to January 2017. “During the operation, we will improve security at vital locations such as tourist areas, especially in Ubud”, he said. (kmb35)

The owner of the backpack that contained the bomb is a Dutch traveller named Mark Aart who was interrogated at the Ubud Police station on Tuesday afternoon around 11:00. Mark Aart however claimed that he had lost his backpack on Monday while having diner on Jalan Rama, in Ubud on Monday night (Dec.19). Ubud Police chief, I Nyoman Wirajaya, confirmed that Mark Aart had reported the loss of his backpack on Tuesday morning around 8 p.m. After handling the bomb case at Lungsiakan hamlet, Kedewatan, Wirajaya suspected that there was a connection with the reporting of the missing backpack.

GSK launches big study to test new injection for HIV prevention

LONDON - GlaxoSmithKline said on Tuesday its HIV unit ViiV Healthcare had started a large study to test an experimental longacting injection for preventing the virus that causes AIDS. Reuters reported last month

that the pre-exposure prophylaxis

(PrEP) study with cabotegravir was about to start. The Phase III study aims to enrol 4,500 men who have sex with men, and transgender women who

have sex with men, at more than 40 sites in North and South America, Asia and Africa. A second study involving young women is due to start in 2017.

TOKYO - A virulent strain of airborne bird flu extended its shadow across northeast Asia as Japan launched a new chicken cull on a southern island, days after gassing hundreds of thousands of birds some 2,400 kilometers (1,500 miles) to the north. Tackling Japan’s sixth outbreak since end-November, Kyushu authorities said they will gas just over 120,000 chickens after the H5 virus was detected on a farm. The island lies close to South Korea, which has ordered a record cull of 20 million birds since first reporting the H5N6 virus just over a month ago. The rapid spread of the virus has sent health officials across Asia scrambling to contain outbreaks while the poultry industry braces for heavy financial losses. As part of its protection drive, China now has bans in place on poultry imports from more than 60 countries, including South Korea and Japan as well as parts of Europe now also experiencing a bird flu outbreak. This housewife who daily earns her life by making tamas (dish-like plate made of coconut leaves) and offerings established a small shack with woven bamboo wall given by neighbors and ex-cement sacks in alarming condition. More seriously, roofed with used asbestos, the shack she inhabits cannot protect her from the drops of water when it rains. Likewise, the pillars of her shack made from quickstick tree look to have been in rickety condition but have been propped up with a few wooden sticks so that it can still be inhabited. To go to the location, one should walk for about fifteen minutes and pass through a clump of bushes in the moor and several creeks with the terrain of quite steep footpath. Besides, it is even very slippery during rainy season. Her shack has no electricity and toilet facility. She just relies on the water flowing in the river located few meters from her shack. She takes advantage of river water for cooking. Additionally, the streams of small creek, that sometimes is murky and dirty even in rainy season, is also used for toilet needs and source of drinking water and sanitation. For lighting inside the shack at night, she only uses an oil lamp. She has a small room. In addition to sleeping, the room with a dirt floor and the measure of not

more than 1.5 square meters is also functioned as kitchen. She takes advantage of small twigs as firewood obtained from the moor to cook. Several pieces of used cement sack are spread to be used as sleeping mattress. Nengah Sukemi told journalists on Monday (Dec. 19) that she borrows the land to live in. The land belongs to an owner from Denpasar with the permission from a grandfather sharecropping the moor. She belongs to a poor family in the red book and formerly lived with her daughter. However, since her only daughter got married last year, she lives alone. When her husband was still alive, she also stayed on other’s land at Cantel hamlet, Mundeh Kangin, West Selemadeg. All this time, she is in sickly condition as suffering from typhus, and must survive and meet her daily basic needs simply by relying on the results of selling tamas of not more than IDR 100,000 per month, while the mature coconut leaves as raw materials of her tamas are obtained from the gift of her surrounding neighbors. MANGUPURA - Every yearend, Kuta Beach is always filled with marine debris. It is caused by the wind commencing to blow. Possibly, the marine

debris also comes from Sumatra, Sulawesi and other regions, and ultimately runs aground on Kuta Beach,” he said. However, the plantation can only be found in the regions of Sulawesi and Java. Apparently the trees of such size are rarely found in Bali because logically the rivers in Bali are very small. Big rivers are only outside Bali. Besides, the ocean currents are quite strong as evidenced by the stranded dead turtles. It means the ocean currents in Kuta are quite strong,” he explained. Next year, venue of Denfest planned to be spread

DENPASAR - The ninth Denpasar Festival (Denfest) of this year will still be held around the Catur Muka statue. However, the government of Denpasar begins to design that such activities will not be concentrated in the zero kilometer area of Denpasar. Obama bans new oil, gas drilling off Alaska, part of Atlantic coast

WASHINGTON - U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday banned new oil and gas drilling in federal waters in the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, in a push to leave his stamp on the environment before Republican Donald Trump takes office next month. Obama used a 1950s-era law called the Outer Continental Shelf Act that allows presidents to limit areas from mineral leasing and drilling. Environmental groups said that meant Trump’s incoming administration would have to go court if it sought to reverse the move. The ban affects 115 million acres (46.5 million hectares) of federal waters off Alaska in the Chukchi Sea and most of the Beaufort Sea and 3.8 million acres (1.5 million hectares) in the Atlantic from New England to Chesapeake Bay. Trump, who succeeds Obama on Jan. 20, has said he would expand offshore oil and gas drilling. A recent memo from his energy transition team said his policy could increase production in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas, as well as the mid- and south Atlantic. Even if Trump tries to fight the move, few energy companies have expressed a desire to drill anytime soon off the coasts thanks to abundant cheap shale oil in North Dakota and Texas. The American Petroleum Institute oil industry group disagreed about the permanence of the ban and said Trump could likely use a presidential memorandum to lift it. “We are hopeful the incoming administration will reverse this decision as the nation continues to need a robust strategy for developing offshore and onshore energy,”

Under that law, a president is not authorized to “undo” a previous withdrawal, making it more difficult for Trump to target without a lawsuit. “No president has ever tried to undo a permanent withdrawal of an ocean area from leasing eligibility,” said Niel Lawrence, Alaska director and attorney at the Natural Resources Defense Council. The provision has been used by six presidents from both parties over the past 65 years, including to withdraw as much as several hundred million acres at a time, he said. ‘SMART BUSINESS DECISION’ In 2015, just 0.1 percent of U.S. federal offshore crude production came from the Arctic. At current oil

prices, significant production in the Arctic will not occur, according to a Department of Interior analysis. There is currently no crude oil production in the Canadian Arctic. On the U.S. Atlantic coast, local groups have opposed offshore drilling and would fight the Trump administration’s attempts to open it up. “The people of the Atlantic coast have refused to allow their way of life to be compromised,” said Jacqueline Savitz, senior vice president of Florida-based ocean conservancy group Oceana. TULTEPEC - A series of massive explosions destroyed a fireworks market outside the Mexican capital on Tuesday, killing at least 31 people, injuring dozens and leaving the market a charred wasteland. Television images showed a flurry of multicolored pyrotechnics exploding into the early afternoon sky as a giant plume of smoke rose above the market. Fireworks detonated in a peal of clattering bursts reminiscent of a war zone. It was the third time in just over a decade that explosions have hit the popular San Pablito marketplace in Tultepec, about 20 miles (32 km) north of Mexico City. The detonations struck in the run-up to the busy Christmas holiday, when many Mexicans stock up on fireworks. “People were crying everywhere and desperately running in all directions,” said 20-year-old witness Cesar Carmona. Some children suffered burns to more than 90 percent of their bodies and were being sent to the U.S. city of Galveston in Texas for treatment, said Eruviel Avila, the governor of the State of Mexico in which Tultepec is located. He also vowed to find and punish those responsible and to provide economic assistance to those who had lost their livelihoods. The federal attorney general’s office opened an investigation, saying in a statement that six separate blasts caused the destruction. Isidro Sanchez, the head of Tultepec emergency services, said earlier that a lack of safety measures was the likely cause of the blasts. The federal police said a forensic team had been sent to investigate and that at least 70 people had been injured. Videos from the scene showed people frantically fleeing,

while aerial footage revealed blackened stalls and a flattened tangle of metal and wood. The state’s top prosecutor raised the death toll late on Tuesday to 31, most of whom died at the market. More than 80 percent of the 300 stalls at the market were destroyed by the explosions, said state official Jose Manzur. He said the market was inspected by safety officials last month and no irregularities were found. Mexican media reported there were 300 tonnes of fireworks at the market at the time of the explosions. The head of a local pyrotechnics association told online publication Animal Politico last week that the fireworks market was the safest in Latin America, featuring “perfectly designed stalls” that could prevent any chain reaction in the event of a spark. Federico Juarez was present when the first explosion rocked the market. “Everyone started running to escape as bricks and pieces of concrete fell everywhere,” he said. The blasts were the latest in a long-running series of fatal explosions and industrial accidents that have rocked Mexico’s oil, gas and petrochemical industries. A blast struck the Tultepec fireworks market in September 2005 just before independence day celebrations, injuring many people. Another detonation gutted the area again almost a year later. “I offer my condolences to the relatives of those who lost their lives in this accident and my wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured,” President Enrique Pena Nieto said in a tweet. Pena Nieto is the former governor of the State of Mexico, the country’s largest, which surrounds the capital.

LONDON - Formula One’s post-season shake-up took another spin on Tuesday with Williams announcing the departure of technical head Pat Symonds while Valtteri Bottas moved closer to Mercedes and Felipe Massa’s retirement looked to be coming to an end. Williams said Symonds, 63, would be leaving them on Dec. 31, the news coming amid speculation that Paddy Lowe is set to join them from dominant world champions Mercedes to take up a similar role. Symonds, who worked with the late Brazilian great Ayrton Senna at Toleman in the 1980s and seven times champion Michael Schumacher at Benetton in the 1990s, joined Williams in 2013. “Pat’s appointment was the start of a major restructuring exercise, and he has been pivotal in reshaping Williams into what is a much stronger racing team today,” deputy principal Claire Williams said. “We now look to the future and will be announcing details regarding the team’s technical leadership in due course.” Symonds left Formula One in 2009 when his then employers Renault were embroiled in a race-fixing scandal after it emerged that they had ordered Brazilian Nelson Piquet to crash deliberately at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix. The Briton returned as a consultant in 2011 with Virgin Racing, now Manor. His departure from Williams means the former world champions, who finished fifth

this year, will start the year with several new faces. Canadian Lance Stroll, still just 18, will be making his race debut but his team mate remains uncertain following the surprise retirement of Mercedes’ newly-crowned world champion Nico Rosberg. Bottas, who has been at Williams since 2013, is the favourite to replace Rosberg as Lewis Hamilton’s team mate. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff is also involved in the Finn’s management. If Bottas leaves, Brazilian veteran Massa is tipped to come back out of the retirement he started -- somewhat reluctantly when it became evident there was nowhere else for him to go -- at the end of November. Media reports indicated Massa, 35, had agreed the terms for a return to Williams should Bottas go. Massa is currently on holiday, his manager Nicolas Todt was not immediately available and neither Williams nor Mercedes have confirmed anything. Williams use Mercedes engines and a discount on them, coupled with Lowe possibly being allowed to join the team earlier than scheduled, is likely to sweeten any deal for Bottas.
