NEW YORK — Jay-Z and Beyonce were joined by a slew of artists a one-off. “This is our first annual including Nicki Minaj and Usher at Barclays Center in Brooklyn Tues- event,” he told the cheering crowd. Concert organizers said all money from ticket prices was going to the charity, estimated to be about $1 million. Jay-Z and other artists announced in March that they were the co-owners of Tidal, which was presented as the first artist-owned music and video platform.

NEW YORK - Gwen Stefani has opened up about her divorce from fellow rocker Gavin Rossdale in the form of music, releasing an emotional song entitled “Used to Love You.” The No Doubt frontwoman on Tuesday put out a video for the song that consists solely of close-up footage of the singer looking forlorn and reflective. To a light electronic beat, Stefani sings, “I don’t know why I cry / But I think it’s because I remembered for the first time since I hated you / That I used to love you.” Stefani had debuted the song Saturday night at a concert in New York, telling the audience at the start of her encore that she would share a song about “pain and love and my real life.” The song is notably more melancholy than the

best-known songs of No Doubt, which built a wide following in the 1990s as it brought ska music into the mainstream. Stefani, a California native, met Rossdale when the English singer and guitarist’s alternative rock band Bush was touring with No Doubt in the United States. The couple married in 2002 and have been raising three children in Los Angeles. The rockers had generally stayed out of the limelight except in 2004 when a paternity test revealed that Rossdale had a daughter with the British designer Pearl Lowe, with whom he had an earlier relationship. Indonesia will cut the number of flights allowed per hour from Jakarta’s main airport due to safety concerns, officials said on Wednesday, following a series of major crashes that have killed more than 300 in the last year.

Indonesian airports have struggled to cope with the huge expansion of air travel in Southeast Asia’s largest economy, getting poor marks in a 2014 safety audit by the U.N. aviation agency due to insufficient staffing. To help ease the work load on air traffic controllers at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, it will be limited to 62 takeoffs and landings an hour, down from around 72 at peak hours currently, said Muzaffar Ismail, director for aircraft operations at the transportation ministry. “With the high frequency of flights, there is a greater risk of collisions and accidents,” Ismail said. The changes were not expected to lead to a reduction in the number of take-offs and landings per day, as more flights would be scheduled for off-peak hours to meet the new capacity requirements. Haze from slash-and-burn forest fires was not mentioned as a safety concern. Experts questioned how reducing the number of flights would

actually fix Indonesia’s air safety problems. “If 72 flights an hour was not safe, then why did they approve it in the first place?” said Jakartabased aviation consultant Gerry Soejatman. “It seems to be an overreaction. Instead of mitigating the risk, they seem to be avoiding the risk.” Indonesia has a poor aviation safety record, with four major crashes in less than a year. In December, an AirAsia flight went down in the Java Sea, killing all 162 on board. More than 120 people died in June in the crash of a military transport plane, while all 54 on board a Trigana Air aircraft died in a crash in Papua in August. Currently, for the sake of developing residential areas, many subak irrigation networks are disturbed. As a result, the distribution of water to paddy fields does not work smoothly. Damaged technical irrigation makes farmers in Bali increasingly miserable. The making of retention basins planned to irrigate paddy fields in some areas does not run effectively. The retention basin originally intended for agriculture is then functioned for commercial needs. Water of the retention basin is commercialized by the Municipality Waterworks (PDAM). As a result, the flow of water to paddy fields continues to shrink. Ironically, contribution of the PDAM to preservation of subak as agricultural

buffer is unclear. Revenue sharing of the PDAM to maintain the irrigation channels is rarely heard. Enjoyment of agricultural water by the PDAM without technical studies is noteworthy as the challenge of advancing the agricultural sector in Bali. Another challenge is the absence of control against developers in making residential areas. In reality, Tabanan bearing the predicate as rice granary of Bali is equally threatened by decreased production. In addition to the decline in the number of farmer family, the planting area in Tabanan is shrinking as well. According to Prof. Dr. I Wayan Ramantha, an economist from the Udayana University, the recent farming condition in Bali is indeed worsened and continues to decline. To that end, the improvement of regulation in agricultural sector should be given priorities. This sector must be placed at first rank among the existing sectors in Bali by local government. “In terms of demographic struc-

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Women urged to wait until 45 for breast cancer screenings MIAMI - In a controversial shift, a leading US medical association on Tuesday urged women to wait until the age of 45 before getting an annual mammogram to screen for breast cancer.

The American Cancer Society previously recommended women be screened each year from age 40, but has changed its advice because evidence failed to show enough lives are being saved. And while younger women are being advised to start later, women over 55 are now urged to switch to getting mammograms every two years, instead of annually. “Since the last American Cancer Society (ACS) breast cancer screening update for average-risk women was published in 2003, new evidence has accumulated from long-term follow-up of randomized controlled trials and observational studies,” said the guidelines, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Women should still have the opportunity to begin annual screenings at 40 if they choose, the guidelines noted. Stephanie Bernik, chief of surgical oncology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, described the new guidelines as “disappointing.” “Although the recommendations are based on scientific studies, most of the studies only look at survival as the only important outcome,” Bernik said. “They fail to address the fact that women with smaller tumors often need less treatment.” Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women worldwide. It is also the second deadliest form of the disease in women, after lung cancer. More than 40,000 women in the United States will die of breast cancer this year, according to background information in the article. Early detection can help improve survival, but screening all women beginning at age 40 can also lead to problems, such as false positives,

biopsies, surgeries to remove masses that may not have been dangerous, and potential surgical complications, experts say. Evidence from clinical trials has shown little benefit from mammograms when it comes to saving lives among younger women, said an accompanying editorial by Nancy Keating of Harvard Medical School and Lydia Pace of Brigham and Women’s Hospital. They wrote that regular mammography might prevent breast cancer deaths in about five of every 10,000 women in their 40s, or 10 of every 10,000 women in their 50s. “Thus, about 85 percent of women in their 40s and 50s who die of breast cancer would have died regardless of mammography screening,” they wrote. Offering more sophisticated screening tests, including genomic risk factors, would be better for younger women than expanded screening mammography, they argued. The new guidelines also no longer recommend breast exams, in which clinicians manually feel patients’ breasts for lumps, for women of any age who do not have a family history of breast cancer. The American Cancer Society cited the “absence of clear evidence” that they contribute “significantly to breast cancer detection prior to or after age 40.” The updated guidelines are now closer in line with the other major issuer of health guidelines, the US Preventive Services Task Force, which has already said that there is not enough evidence to support clinical breast exams as a way of finding breast cancer or preventing breast cancer deaths. The ACS guidelines also urge older women to “continue screening mammography as long as their overall health is good and they have a life expectancy of 10 years or longer.” Both groups recommend that screening decisions be individualized to reflect a woman’s preferences and her underlying risk of breast cancer. Early, intense intervention helps schizophrenics recover MIAMI - Talk therapy coupled with early intervention and low doses of anti-psychotic medication can be more effective for people with schizophrenia than routine treatment, a major US study said Tuesday. The research published in The American Journal of Psychiatry suggests a new and more effective approach to mental health care, which many experts complain is sorely lacking in the United States. “We feel that getting the right treatment at the right time is really key,” said lead researcher John Kane, professor and chairman of the department of psychiatry at The Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine.

“That means a combination of medication and family psychoeducation, supportive education and employment, and individual therapy,” Kane told AFP. “And that should be given by a team that is working together and focused on helping the patient.” The project, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, was implemented in clinics around the country and involved 404 patients. In an approach modeled after programs already in place in Australia and Scandinavia, a team of specialists “offered recovery-oriented psychotherapy, low doses of antipsychotic medications, family education and support, case management, and work or education support,

depending on the individual’s needs and preferences,” said the study. The results published were based on two years of follow-up with the patients, some of whom reported learning how to better control their reactions to hearing voices. Those who were treated with the new approach “remained in treatment longer, and experienced greater improvement in their symptoms, interpersonal relationships, quality of life, and involvement in work and school,” compared to those given routine treatment. So just what is routine care in the United States? Part of the challenge is that it varies enormously, said Kane. “Some clinics may be doing a

terrific job, other clinics maybe less so,” he told AFP. In some places, patients may not get the same level of educational support for themselves and their families, to help them deal with their illness, he said. “We need to make routine care a little bit more uniform and a little more evidence-based so that we know that everyone is getting access to the things that have been shown to be helpful,” Kane added. As for costs, the researchers have not yet published any projections or calculations, but Kane said he believes the new approach will prove cost-effective in the long run. The study also did not publish

any data comparing how different doses of anti-psychotic medications affected patient outcomes. “When people are in their very first episode of psychosis, they will often benefit from lower doses of medicine than are used to treat people who have been ill for a long time,” Kane explained. “That doesn’t mean that we found that the use of lower doses in the experimental group” contributed to their advantage, he added. “We haven’t even analyzed the dose data yet.” Rather, he said the take-away message for people who may be suffering from psychosis or schizophrenia should be to aim for a proper combination of medication and talk therapy. DENPASAR - Total number of new motor vehicles particularly in Denpasar and Badung continues to grow, while road infrastructure is inadequate. As a result, traffic jam, especially during rush hours is inevitable. If this condition is not immediately found a solution, then the traffic in Denpasar will be paralyzed. “Within the next five years, the traffic in Denpasar begins to stagnate. Such condition has started to happen on Jalan Imam Bonjol,” said the Chief of Traffic Engineering Unit at the Bali Police Traffic Affairs, Putu Dedi Ujiana. Traffic problems occurred all this time, he said, because of violation. Further, the violation will result in accident and congestion. Congestion is having a devastating impact due to decreased productivity, increased fuel consumption, decreased quality of life, increased stress level, increased production costs and declined environmental quality. The most appropriate solution to tackle the congestion due to uncontrolled number of vehicles, he added, is by raising taxes, especially to motor vehicle. Tax should be equivalent to the price of a new motorcycle. “If there is such a policy, people will think twice to buy a motorcycle. Automatically the number of motorcycles on the road can be suppressed. At least the tax is two-thirds of the price of new motorcycle,” he said. The government must compensate by preparing the infrastructure, particularly an adequate mass transportation. High accident rate is also caused by crowded roads. They especially happen during working hours coinciding with school hours so that at the same time the vehicles spill over on the road. Tens of foreigners arrested in Kuta

MANGUPURA - The Criminal Investigation team of the National Police assisted by Kuta Police and Bali Police raided two locations, namely Jalan Sri Krisna and Jalan Dewi Sri, Kuta, Tuesday (Oct. 20). As a result, they could arrest 46 citizens of China and Taiwan. Allegedly they are getting involved in fraud case under the guise of becoming police agencies, prosecutors and employees of telephone operator. According to Spokesman of Bali Police, Hery Wiyanto, the raid was conducted on Tuesday afternoon. At the scene on Jalan Sri Krishna, Kuta, the joint team arrested 23 people, consisting of 16 Chinese and seven Taiwanese citizens. The fraudsters from China have the initials LH, WDD, XM, DY, WJ, PYM, WB, HM, CQC, LHN, QJ, HQ, XYL, WWQ, MY and ZZH. Then, the Taiwanese ones consist of GJR, WHP, WCW, LYY, WMG, WJZ and LCM. “The arrest was made to six women and the rest are men,” affirmed Hery. On the other hand, the raid on Jalan Dewi Sri, Kuta, could arrest 21 men and 2 women where all of them are from China. The culprits are LY, YJQ, LJT, HBW, LL, YH, TL, WD, LP, ZMW, TH, WY, XJ, ZYP, ZB, YB, MK, HL, XMJ, WMT, MGC, FYY and LGC. “The arrest is made based on assistance request from Chinese Police Department,” he said. According to him, they were arrested because of being alleged to get involved in criminal offenses such as fraud through internet access having been modified in such a way into VoIP. Furthermore, they committed fraud as if they were agent of police, prosecutors and clerks of telephone operator in China. “The victims are citizens of China,” he said while added that similar arrest is also made in some regions. As planned, they will be deported to China and Taiwan because they have no victims in Indonesia. According to him, Bali in particular is also vulnerable to such cases. On that account, all parties are expected to monitor the presence of foreigners, especially those from China and Taiwan. Vatican denies report pope has small, curable brain tumor

VATICAN CITY — The Vatican on Wednesday categorically denied a report in an Italian newspaper that Pope Francis has a small, curable brain tumor, saying he is in good health and that his head is “absolutely perfect.” The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said the report Wednesday in the National Daily was “completely unfounded and seriously irresponsible and not worthy of attention.” Citing unnamed nursing sources, the National Daily said the 78-yearold pope had traveled by helicopter to the San Rossore di Barbaricina clinic near Pisa in recent months to see a Japanese brain cancer specialist, Dr. Takanori Fukishima. The newspaper said the doctor determined that the small dark spot on Francis’ brain could be treated without surgery. In subsequent versions, the paper reported that Fukishima had instead come to the Vatican to see the pope in a Vatican helicopter. The ANSA news agency, citing unnamed sources in Pisa, said the trip was in January and that Fukishima had traveled by helicopter to the Vatican to diagnose the pope. Lombardi categorically denied the reports to reporters Wednesday, and said he was doing so after having spoken to the pope himself about them. Gulf should adjust to new oil price ‘reality’: IMF

DUBAI - Gulf economies need to adjust to the “new reality” of oil prices expected to remain low for some time, the International Monetary Fund says, recommending spending cuts and income diversification. By 2020, we are expecting to see oil prices in the low and mid 60s rather than the numbers they were used to,” said Ahmed. “That means that most of these countries will need to undertake a process of sizeable and sustained adjustment on the fiscal side.” Those adjustments should include finding ways to cut public spending and diversify income away from oil, said Ahmed, pointing mainly at the need to cut subsidies and reduce the public

sector wage bill. “Most nationals of the GCC countries work in the public sector, and that’s a model that has to change over the next few years,” he said. Ahmed applauded a recent move by the UAE to lift subsidies on fuel as a “good example” for other GCC countries. DETROIT — Elaborate new transmissions are helping automakers meet rising fuel economy standards, but they’re also requiring more trips to the repair shop. Transmission problems tripped up Honda, Nissan, Jeep and other brands in Consumer Reports’ annual reliability survey. Drivers reported rough shifting, clutch failure and even transmissions that had to be replaced twice in the first year of car ownership. Lexus and Toyota — which rely on older transmissions in many of their models — were the bestperforming brands in the survey. Lexus or Toyota has topped the survey since 2011. Audi, Mazda and Subaru rounded out the top five. The worst performers were Infiniti, Cadillac, Ram, Jeep and Fiat among 28 brands. The survey, released Tuesday, predicts the reliability of 2016 cars and trucks based on a survey of its subscribers. This year’s survey was based on responses from owners of 740,000 vehicles. Consumer Reports’ annual survey is closely watched by the auto industry, since many potential buyers follow the Yonkers, New York-based company’s recommendations. Wall Street watches closely, too. Tesla Motors’ shares fell nearly 10 percent after Consumer Reports said it would no longer recommend its Model S sedan. The Model S got high scores in the magazine’s driving tests, but owners reported multiple mechanical problems.

Transmissions with more gears help engines run more efficiently. A car with an eight-speed transmission gets about 8 percent better fuel economy than one with a four-speed, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Dual-clutch transmissions use separate clutches for odd and even gears, allowing faster shifting. And continuously variable transmissions do away with fixed gears altogether, relying instead on a system of pulleys to produce an infinite variety of engine to wheel-speed combinations. But new technology can cause problems. Honda Motor Co. took a risk and put two new transmissions — an eight-speed dual-clutch and a nine-speed — in its 2015 Acura TLX sedan. Consumer Reports said they had multiple problems, and the Acura brand slipped seven spots to 18th in this year’s survey. The Honda brand remains in the top ten, but it fell below Kia for the first time due to transmission problems as well as glitches with its infotainment system. TEHRAN — Iran’s supreme leader on Wednesday endorsed a landmark nuclear deal reached with world powers, but warned the government to be vigilant, saying the United States cannot be trusted. In protest, residents placed the bodies of the children on a key highway in Faridabad near Delhi on Wednesday and demanded the arrest of the attackers. The 2½-year-old and 9-month old were sleeping when the attackers poured gasoline and set the

fire in the house in Sunpedh village. The children died while their mother was in critical condition, police said. Police said there was enmity between the castes since three upper caste men were killed last year. Caste discrimination is outlawed but persists in Indian society. JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has called on exporters to expand to new markets rather than solely focusing on “traditional markets.” “They have an opportunity to expand their markets. Non-traditional markets must be explored. Do not (concentrate just on) traditional markets,” the president stated after opening the Trade Expo Indonesia (TEI) in the JIExpo Kemayoran, here, Wednesday. Indonesian products are varied and have the potential to penetrate non-traditional markets. The government has been supporting exporters by providing the people’s business credits (KURs) at an interest rate of only nine percent for first-time businessmen. The Indonesian Export Financing Institute (LPEI) is also providing credits to export-oriented businessmen, he stated. The government is focusing on the development of jobintensive industries that are export-oriented, he pointed out. Several Indonesian export destination counties are experiencing a sluggish economy, he noted. “The important aspect is how we could maintain our trade surpluses. SE Asia fires ‘produce more greenhouse gas than US’

JAKARTA - Indonesian forest and agricultural fires cloaking Southeast Asia in acrid haze are spewing more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere each day than all US economic activity, according to an environmental watchdog. The shock assessment came as Jakarta said the number of blazes was increasing across the archipelago despite a multinational fire-fighting effort, and announced plans to deploy more water-bombing aircraft. For nearly two months, thousands of fires caused by slash-and-burn farming have suffocated vast expanses of the region with smog, causing respiratory illnesses to soar, schools to close, and scores of flights and some international events to be cancelled. Much of the burning is in tropical peatlands rich in carbon but which are being drained and cleared at a

rapid rate to make way for agriculture, particularly fast-expanding palm oil plantations. The World Resources Institute said in a recent report that since early September carbon emissions from the fires had exceeded average US daily output on 26 out of 44 days. The United States is the world’s second-largest greenhouse gas source after China. The WRI, a US-based research organisation that focuses on environment and development issues, normally classifies Indonesia as the fifth-biggest emitter. “The burning of tropical peatlands

is so significant for greenhouse gas emissions because these areas store some of the highest quantities of carbon on Earth, accumulated over thousands of years,” the WRI, which used findings from the Global Fire Emissions Database for the report, said. “Draining and burning these lands for agricultural expansion, such as conversion to oil palm or pulpwood plantations, leads to huge spikes in greenhouse gas emissions.” The smog crisis is escalating as world leaders gear up for talks beginning next month on a climate rescue pact, which will seek to limit global warming to two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) over pre-Industrial Revolution levels. Indonesia to use chemical castration to punish paedophiles

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s president will soon sign a decree authorising the use of chemical castration to punish paedophiles, the attorney general said, following a string of headline-grabbing child sex crimes. Indonesia will join a small group of nations that allows such punishment, including Poland, Russia, and Estonia, as well as some U.S. states. In 2011, South Korea became the first Asian country to use chemical castration as a punishment. “We are very concerned about child molestation abuse cases. This phenomenon has reached extraordinary levels,” Attorney General H.M. Prasetyo told reporters after a cabinet meeting late on Tuesday. “It has been agreed that there will be additional punishment in order to make people think a thousand times before doing this,” he said. President Joko Widodo is expected to issue a presidential decree soon approving the punishment after the cabinet agreed to the measure late on Tuesday, Prasetyo said. Chemical castration would involve injecting convicted paedophiles with a female hormone in the hope “his sexual desire will vanish”, he said. The rape last year of a 6-year-old student by a group of janitors at the U.S.-embassy backed Jakarta Intercultural School rekindled calls for tougher punishments. There have been a number of other high-profile child sex crimes since then. A 9-year-old schoolgirl was raped and killed in the capital, Jakarta, earlier this month. Jorge Lorenzo says his best hope of capturing a third MotoGP crown to just ignore the championship situation and try to dominate the remaining grands prix in Malaysia and Valencia. Daniele de Rossi scored two goals to cancel out early strikes from Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, before Roma took a 4-2 lead on goals from Miralem Pjanic and substitute Iago Falque. But Kevin Kampl began Leverkusen’s comeback in the 84th and substitute Admir Mehmedi scored two minutes later to salvage the draw. “At the end, we could have even won 5-4,” Leverkusen’s goalkeeper Bernd Leno said. Chicharito’s effort in injury time narrowly missed the target. Leverkusen now has four points in Group E, while Roma is bottom with two points. Mourinho says referee was ‘weak’ after Champs League draw

KIEV, Ukraine — Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho has described a Champions League referee as “weak and naive,” and compared him to beleaguered rugby official Craig Joubert. Mourinho made his comments to British television channel BT Sport on Tuesday night after Slovenian referee Damir Skomina failed to award a penalty to his team during Chelsea’s 0-0 draw with Dynamo Kiev. The Portuguese coach was last week fined 50,000 pounds ($77,400) and handed a suspended one-match stadium ban by the English Football Association for criticizing a Premier League referee for not awarding a penalty during Chelsea’s 3-1 loss to Southampton earlier this month. of Skomina, saying that the official’s refereeing Tuesday was “very good” apart from the penalty incident.
